August Weather Days with rainfall: 0 Days Avg Max Temperature: 29.5c Hours of Sunshine : 9.9 p/day The weather data is for guidance only and is the average monthly maximum for the Costa del Sol

Last month I had a fabulous time. Myself and the kids took a trip back to the UK to see family where we went on day trips to both London and Brighton. The weather was a fantastic 27 degrees so we were able to frequent English pub gardens and sit outside for dinner. As we left it did start to rain which was a little reminder of the usual weather in England! Upon returning to Spain family then came to visit us and another few days were spent round by the pool and more al fresco dining! July was also the month that my local village had its feria, although i’m not that keen on feria itself on the Saturday the Plaza Almijara in Cómpeta hosts a foam party which I do enjoy. For the second year running an inflatable water slide was erected from the main plaza down the La Rampa slope which was fantastic. If you want to see the fun take a look on our Facebook page grapevine magazine axarquia. This month the fun doesn’t stop, as there are plenty more Ferias in the area including the famous Malaga Feria. As we have more Feria information we will post the details on our facebook page. Also this month Cómpeta celebrates Noche Del Vino on the 15th August see pages 54 to 57 for more information on the day and evening events and where is good to go to eat, drink and shop in the area. . Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

his month of May at Los Caballos del Mosquin will be another good month.

Spring has arrived and the horses are looking really well after having changed their winter coat for the shint short summer coat. Flowers, birds, the bright light

This time we will have the visit of Danish Equin Vet Heidi Nielsen, who is coming to teach us How to keep your horse durable, healthy and happy.Among other things Heidi will work us through; A chiropractical examination of each horse. A thorough examination of the hooves. A checking out the saddle of our horses. An analisis of our riding according to the "Alexander technic". Due to the economic crisis, many property exchanges have transpired where the real value at the time of the transfer is actually lower than the value was when it was acquired. Therefore, there is a good chance that a claim for reimbursement would be successful as no financial benefit has been achieved in the operation due to the fact that the value of the land in reality has not increased. This is the fundamental point on which the Constitutional Court based its decision, under article 31.1 of the Spanish Constitution. When and how to claim back the “Plusvalia Tax” paid? BUS FROM COMPETA TO MALAGA The bus from Cómpeta to Malaga runs at 7:15/9:45/15:45 on weekdays

G

etting the bus to the coast from Cómpeta to Malaga can be a daunting prospect, for folks new to the area and for holiday makers alike. I, and a few stalwarts, use it on a regular basis and we often notice a look of either fear or excitement on the faces of first time users! The following information from a seasoned bus user may be useful for holiday makers or for residents without transport. The bus from Cómpeta to Malaga runs at 7:15/9:45/15:45 on weekdays. It runs from Cómpeta runs to Sayalonga, Algarrobo, Algarrobo Costa, Torre del Mar, and Malaga. With transfers at Torre del Mar to a smaller bus for the Hospital, the El Ingenio shopping centre and Velez Malaga. You will find the Bus Stop in Cómpeta more or less opposite

26 The Grapevine

the Tourist Information Centre. It has a shelter, and to the uninitiated this would seem like the obvious place to wait. Unfortunately the bus stops just short of this and most locals sit on the wall exactly where the bus stops. It's a case of every man and woman for himself or herself. Queuing is not really a thing and normally the oldies with the green concession cards get on first and smokers last. Once on board, it's better to sit on the left near the front and to look straight ahead! If you know you're a bad traveller and experience nausea, do carry a bottle of water and a poly bag in case of emergencies. Breakfasting on a full English before taking this journey is not advised! After taking the fare, you may notice the driver pop over to the Chinese shop or stand outside the bus having a cigarette, or

even wander over to the bar to deliver a package. Each driver had a different routine, but the bus always leaves at 9.45 sharp on weekdays (weekends its 9:05 or 9:10). Leaving Cómpeta, the bus wends its way to Sayalonga. The newer buses have seat belts. Some belt up, some make the sign of the cross: it's a matter of personal choice, but by law you should use the belts. Occasionally the bus will stop for a passenger by the side of the road on its way down. The first part of the journey to Sayalonga takes about17 minutes. It stops for about 5 minutes. The lottery seller normally gets on first if he can, and then proceeds to sell his tickets or check tickets while the driver takes fares, then the driver may buy a lottery a ticket, or get off for a quick cigarette. When the lottery excitement is over, the

bus proceeds down to Algarrobo arriving at about 10:20. At this stop there's sometimes another smaller Loymerbus waiting, and some passengers get a ticket on the larger bus before getting onto the smaller one. Do stay on the large bus until Torre del Mar, even if you are eventually going to get on the smaller bus. Thursday is market day in Torre so the bus gets quite full. Two more unscheduled stops for regular passengers and the bus goes to Algarrobo Costa, or as Las Playas, arriving at about 10:33. If its Torrox or Nerja you are wanting, you'll find the Alsa bus stop over the road near the furniture shop. Algarrobo Costa is the stop for the beaches and for Lidl, which you can see on the left before the bus turns at the roundabout). After Algarrobo Costa the bus carries on to Torre del Mar,

To advertise call 637 028 873

where you change and cross the road for the smaller bus that goes to the Hospital, El Ingenio and Velez Malaga. If your destination is Malaga, stay on the bus at Torre. You'll reach Malaga at about 11:15, depending on the traffic. The first stop is the Port, but sometimes the driver doesn't stop there unless the bell is rung. It's the stop for Calle Larios, the Historic centre and the Port. If you need the Hospital in Malaga, there are buses by the flower market. Opposite this stop is a small bus station and a Ferris Wheel. From the Port the bus heads on to the Bus Station, which is next to the Train Station. Here you'll find buses every half an hour for the Airport, or you can catch a train to the airport every 20 minutes. Its about 10 minutes on the train and about half an hour on the bus.

The buses back towards Cรณmpeta on Weekdays are 11:30/13:15/18:30 from the same stop that you got off at the Bus Station. The Port stop is by the 'Malaga Tours' bus, by the smaller bus station by the Ferris Wheel. In Torre del Mar the return stop is opposite the Loymerbus office. It leaves at 12:30/14:00/19:30 and reaches Algarrobo Costa about 10 minutes later. The Algarrobo Costa stop is a shelter on the right a little before Lidl. I do hope this is useful to someone. construction, clad, unusually, in slate. The concerts take place in the forecourt of this building, while upstairs is a lovely airy salon where wine and tapas can be served. Their summer evening “Mountain Wine & Music” concerts have already included a glorious piano concert (with a Steinway grand brought in from Granada!), the flamenco dancer Marina Aranda, and the jazz-flamenco fusion of La Bejazz, from Seville. But there's more to come. On 12th August string quartet “Quartzteto” will bring a classical touch to the summer. The string quartet was once considered the noblest form of music and the beautiful and elegant sound of Quartzteto's music might even shame the cicadas into silence! September brings us back to Flamenco with instrumentalist Diego Villegas performing. Diego is leader of a trio playing saxophone, flute and harmonica and promises us an exciting evening with a stirring performance. And on the 23rd there will be a grand finale, with Ellas – another quartet, but this time its four women, who will perform a tribute to the great divas of jazz! WALKING THE LINE “Walks. The body advances, while the mind flutters around it like a bird.” — Jules Renard

A

s Lao-tzu, the great Zen sage said: “A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.” This small, but profound idea is a call to simplicity, to breaking down the big daunting tasks of life into bite-size achievable chunks and most of all to starting somewhere. It's a proverb that applies equally well to walking and writing. The walkers amongst you will understand only too well the psychology of chunking, for what big walk can be started or summit reached without the incentive of snack and drink breaks at various points along the way? Of course, there are some walkers who thrive on the chase: the race to the finish, their competitive streak setting them in motion, propelling them to the top and back at breakneck speed. Whatever the process, no walk can be completed without it first being started,

58 The Grapevine

without one foot being placed in front of another, and on and on. And so it is with writing. Just as every journey starts with a single step so too does every piece of writing begin with a single word. Step after step is walking. Word after word is writing. It's a helpful thing to remember when giving yourself a hard time for not yet having written that novel or that memoir you've been meaning to craft about your grandparents. Yes, it's breaking the task down into achievable chunks, but most of all, it's about getting started, word after word after word. But the parallels between writing and walking extend beyond the helpful metaphor of getting started. As Ferris Jabr wrote in the New Yorker in 2014 “Since at least the time of peripatetic Greek philosophers, many other writers have discovered a deep, intuitive

connection between walking, thinking, and writing.” Not only does walking increase the blood flow to the brain, thereby aiding thinking, it is also requires little in the way of conscious thought, allowing the mind to wander and to stroll unhindered through the labyrinth of the imagination. In his 2009 book, The Lost Art of Walking, Geoff Nicholson talks in depth about the relationship between walking and creativity. “There is something about the pace of walking and the pace of thinking that goes together,” he says. “Walking requires a certain amount of attention but it leaves great parts of the time open to thinking. I do believe once you get the blood flowing through the brain it does start working more creatively.” Writing in the 1850s, Henry David Thoreau waxed lyrical about the necessity of walking and the call that beckons you to

both lose and then find yourself in the wilderness, not as something separate to the natural world but as an essential part of it. Rediscovering that connection can gift us riches of understanding and creative imagination by helping us to break through the veneer of daily habit and tap into something deeper and more profound. In my own experience, it is the steady pace and rhythm of walking that seems to act like an Archimedes Screw, drawing thoughts and ideas from somewhere deep within and delivering them to my conscious mind, unhindered by the trappings and distractions of the everyday. I can be similarly transported whether walking in urban or natural landscapes, but what is interesting to me is the quality of the thoughts and ideas that arise. My wilderness walking conjures ideas that are often mythic or folkloric, I think about

To advertise call 637 028 873

ancestors, the traces we leave behind, human connection to landscape and place. Urban walks conjure ideas about dereliction, dystopia, what is broken, what can't be mended. The edges between these natural and urban experiences are soft and porous, so the wildwoods can also be fearful places full of dark metaphors just as the concrete jungles can be full of heart and home. What seems to be most important of all is not to approach walking with the intention of creating. The advice sometimes given to blocked writers is to 'take your story for a walk'. It's great advice, as long as you don't overburden the walk with the story. Instead, feel the quality of the ground beneath your feet, watch the kestrel hover as it spies its prey, listen to the wind rushing through the trees, allow your hands to brush through sun-warmed shrubs of

Rosemary and Thyme, releasing clouds of hungry scent, watch the small blue butterfly swoop in Us from flower to flower, staying just ahead of you as though a natural tour guide. Walk alone or walk with companions. Talk about nothing and everything. Have moments of solitude and silence. Just be. From that place, the great thread of the Archimedian Screw will slowly begin to deliver riches from the deep. All you have to do is to be ready to receive. INTERIOR DESIGN An Interview with Andrea Slater

A

ndrea Slater is not new to the area she has had a finca in the Natural Park for nearly 20 years but she now feels it is time to slow down her work in Germany and focus on building a business here in Andalucia. Andrea is an Interior designer and as she talks, it is evident how passionate she is about her work, her own finca demonstrates her natural talent and she talks excitedly about how she would love to help people transform their homes and revamp local bars and restaurants. Andrea is originally from Germany and since she was a little girl she was always interested in nice things. She drove her parents mad with constantly changing her bedroom, having found new pieces of furniture, lamps, material or just bits and bobs! Her love of getting a bargain and serious trawling of car boot sales means she is a great believer that Interior design does not have to be expensive. Often she finds a beautiful piece such as a

62 The Grapevine

silver platter or a large glass lamp and then creates a picture or story in her head and then shops to make the idea a reality. In her own home she pointed out various items she had bought for less than 10 euro, some for as little as 1, which she sprayed, cleaned or painted and then created a design around it, with amazing results. Areas of her own home and garden have been transformed into something unique and beautiful. What was a hobby in her teenage years soon became a passion so it was natural to study Interior Design in Germany. After further education it was easy to gain employment using her skills in a photo studio where she learnt more about the importance of light and staging sets. Employment was never a problem and she worked for 2 big catalogues where Andrea gained experience in both indoor and outdoor shooting. In 1999 she set up her own business, becoming self employed which was successful from the start as she worked for many of the

same clients as before. Around this time Andrea was planned a holiday to Andalucia, she had chosen the area of Frigiliana and drove from Germany with her dogs and a previous partner. They had a wonderful holiday and loved the area and relaxed way of life. She explained this is very different to Germany where there are restrictions on their lives such as no mowing the law on a Sunday due to noise pollution and no washing of cars due to water contamination. They looked at buying and saw pictures on the internet of a lovely remote finca in the Natural Park that was up for sale. They viewed the property and that that was it. They immediately put a deposit down and Andrea called her father from Spain to say put my house on the market in Germany immediately! They drove back to Germany and 3 days later their house was sold. However, as often things are when buying in Spain, it wasn't straight forward after this. They were informed that the price included only 25,000sqm of land and now it wasn't possible to split the plot

To advertise call 637 028 873

t

he house was on which was 51,000sq meters. This meant the price rose considerably but Andrea was not deterred. She wanted the house so she put everything into it and lived from client to client. At the time she worked across the country for various bars and shops that paid her travel expenses and put her up in hotels. Before: Eventually she earned enough to pay off the house and start renovation. For the last 17 years Andrea has split her time between Germany and her home in the natural park. In one year she flew back and forth 36 times. In more recent years she has taken things a bit easier and is trying to spend more and more time in Andalucia. She has another partner since buying the house and they have now been together for 11 years and they both want to spend more time in their home in the Natural Park. This doesn't mean Andrea wants to stop working, quite the contrary, she is always working if

To advertise call 637 028 873

it's not for clients its making changes to her own home, renovating, restyling, decorating and sewing. The ideal plan would be to have enough clients in the area in order to reduce the amount of time working in Germany. Andrea has already worked for a few people in the area for example she did a After:

quick make over to a town house that had not been sold for 2 years and then 4 weeks Andrea had revamped it, the house sold. There are many areas where Andrea can help from when a house is bought give new ideas for the whole concept of a new home, make an existing home or room nicer or help sell homes. Initially, Andrea meets with the client, usually at her home as this provides a great platform for clients to see what she can do.

They look through catalogues for colour schemes and ideas. As ideas are formed together a concept board is created that can consist of colour charts, pictures of furniture and fabrics and this board will form the basis of the whole redesign of a room, garden or entire home. The consultation can end here or Andrea can go shopping with the client and then follow the concept through to the end redesign result. Throughout our conversation Andrea kept pointing out the service needn't be expensive a redesign doesn't have to cost the earth and employing an Interior designer isn't only for the rich and famous. She loves her job, she loves helping people and creating their ideas and the best reward is seeing the pure pleasure her clients have when they have completed the redesign together. he lovely andalusian horses at Los Caballos del Mosquin are ready to take you out for a ride this summer. Situated between Competa and Canillas de Albaida in the Axarquia region, right on the doorstep to the natural park; "Sierras Almijara and Tejeda" - with a view to la Maroma to one side and the mediterranian to the other side, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a variety of horseriding experiences.

Even if it is high summer, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a

range of possibilities for horseriding during the summer season. You can enjoy riding out early in the morning or enjoy sunset from the back of a horse on tracks out in the beautiful national park. For the unexperinced rider, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers shorter rides every day, and for the rider seeking more challenges - besides the daily tours, there are special rides out - like for instance the "BuenaVista Ride" every saturday and sunday. This is a half day ride with a picnic stop.

Do you feel a little rusty with your riding skills? Los Caballos del Mosquin also offer a "brush up" in the new and bigger riding school. Many riders like to combine the two things and that can be a lovely combination of a little more tempo in the school and a very relaxed riding out in the nature of Andalucia. We did not plan for any foals this year at Los Caballos del Mosquin, but our mare Farina looked a little out of shape, and when our vet found the mare pregnant with a possible new foal in July, everybody was really surprised when a lovely filly was full born on March 14th. Come and meet our "Sorpresa con H" - the sweetest foal of the year, and have a coffee or a refreshment under the Algarrobo tree. For more information: caballosmosquin@hotmail.com

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH How We've Changed Cómpeta!

I

those of you who've been around long enough to remember, look how it – and Cómpeta - have changed! Back in those days, my Mediterranean Garden Plants book was fairly newly out on the market and I was combining my love of It only seems like yesterday (and a plants, gardens and writing – much bit!) when Helen first asked me if I as I still do. With the Grapevine and myself both being Cómpeta would write monthly gardening residents, it was the ideal articles for the magazine. The combination. A lot of water has not, Grapevine Magazine was only in general, flowed down the dry about a year old then and, for t is 10 years ago that I first started writing for the Grapevine magazine; 120 articles completed and entered on time, some 96,000 words – a breeze!

84 The Grapevine

river beds since then but time has certainly flown by! At that time, some of you may remember, the Garden Centre was temporarily closed and I was concentrating on landscaping work and my writing. However, the pull of selling plants, explaining how best to use them and where they would look their most fabulous was too strong and, around that same time, I re-opened Viveros Florena.

To advertise call 637 028 873

Thus there are a lot of celebrations going on this year and this month in particular is special to me as I will be celebrating another birthday too, my 65th. And, on these steamy hot summer afternoons whilst swinging gently in the hammock, I can´t help but look back. Isn´t that what you're supposed to do as the years hurtle past vertiginously? Slow the helter skelter just a little by applying reverse gear. Sixty five years and thirty one of those have been spent in Spain, specifically in and around Cómpeta. A young Spanish friend recently commented that I was more Spanish than him because, at 29 years old, I'd spent more time in Spain than he had! People often ask about how it was back then – well it's the sort of thing I could write another book on – but suffice to say that, through all the ups and downs that life naturally throws at you, I'm still here and loving it. In spite of minor irritations that, let's face it, you will encounter anywhere something must be very right with Spain! I think I know now that I have found my spot.

as we know them, hardly existed. Spanish neighbours would, of course, have a few fruit trees planted around the cortijo, an ancient grapevine elegantly providing shade and dripping uvas in summer; their village-house balconies would be colourful minicascades of geraniums. But nowadays there are fabulous gardens everywhere you look and lots of trees providing shade. At one time I never got asked for shade-loving plants simply because no-one had shade in their open, sun-bleached gardens-to-be. But now we are frequently selling shade lovers to nestle under those elegantly maturing trees that were planted a decade or so ago. Conversely, tree sales are now falling slightly because, I guess, there are only so many trees you can fit in a garden and there are lots of mature gardens around. It's fascinating to have these facts and figures; they help us to mould the Garden Centre to what you want in the future and, coincidentally, the wanderings of my writings too.

I think you've all done a great job with your gardens - I see them as I'm driving around the campo and, indeed, often recognise 'our' plants! Thank you all for making all these years such a delight, and a pat-on-the-back to all of us for greening up the landscape, providing habitats for all types of Viveros Florena has been open a total of 18 years and I've designed, wild-life, helping our planet and ourselves. COSTA ANIMAL SOCIETY Press Update Scruffs! Let the games begin. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show, Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de EspaĂąa in Nerja from 12.00pm until 5.00pm. Guaranteed to be a wonderful afternoon (beneath the enormous tent), there will be prizes for 12 different categories, including Waggiest Tail and Best Rescue Dog. Food and beverages will be available along with several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts. If you are interested in having a stall please ring Scott on 603 416 632. Why Chip? Aside from the fact that by law you must have your dog or cat chipped, here's an interesting illustration of its importance. Little Juanito was found on the beach over the San Juan weekend and turned into the Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop on June 24. We advertised the little tyke far and wide because he did not have a microchip and waited two weeks to give his owner a chance to reclaim him. In the second week Jaunito was seen on the CAS website by a lovely Swedish couple who had just moved to Nerja. They fell in love with him so he was reserved for adoption. As fate would have it, Juanito's original owner did come forward the very next day. When they were reunited it was clear how much they missed each other by the wagging tail and tears. This lovely young Spanish lady promised to have her little pup chipped in her name straight away. Happy Tails On June 01 Aroa flew to Norway and started her new life with her Nordic adopted family. Her brother Adam went via ground transport to the UK on June 13 and quickly settled in with his new

sister Mimi in the Bolton area. Their sister Agatha is still waiting for her flight to Norway and will join her forever family as soon as arrangements can be made. Probably joining Agatha on the same flight will be Flash, the young female lab cross, provided all her blood tests come back negative and she is fit to travel. Ready for adoption Betty and Benji are very sweet puppies who were left with CAS back in March as part of a litter of five. Their three siblings found homes fairly quickly but these lovely pups are a bit on the shy side and are still looking for their forever homes. However, once they get to know you they come out of their shell and are quite affectionate. They are seven months old, fully vaccinated and Betty has now been spayed. Marilyn was rescued by a 12 year old girl who saw the pup being kicked by some boys in a park. Unfortunately, when the girl brought the pup home her mother could not cope with another pet to look after as they already had two dogs and a cat. Marilyn is now being housed in kennels until a more permanent home can be found. Our Featured Dog of the Month: Negri Negri is believed to have been born early 2012 and is similar to a black Labrador. He's friendly, castrated and vaccinated and has obviously been a loving family pet. He's bright, very trainable and gets on fine with other dogs and with children. He does have low level leishmaniasis so is on daily Alopurinol which is cheap and easy to give. Not tested with cats but a really lovely, loving dog with lovely thick fur to nuzzle into. If you would like to meet Negri you can contact the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on 95 252 9670 or via our Facebook page, /casnerja

El Trapiche Market This place will knock your socks off. With 80 to 100 stall holders, you'll not only find everything you need but everything you didn't know that you needed. The market is on every Tuesday from 9:30 until 13:30. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has a booth just to the left when you enter. We have a fine selection of used books as well as greeting cards and the occasional bric-a-brac. Donations are always welcome. Also, we are looking for a volunteer who can help out from September until December. Believe me, it's a lot of fun. If you can spare a few hours, please ring Scott on 603 416 632 for a quick consultation.Punta Lara CAS Quiz The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our appreciation to Mark at the Punta Lara Bar and our regular quizzers for putting on another brilliant season of trivial pursuit which has helped CAS raise much needed funds throughout the winter and spring. We will be taking a break during the dog days of summer but will resume these fun quizzes at the Punta Lara Bar in Nerja on the third Friday of each month starting in October. CAS Shop News The Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff CafĂŠ in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. To ensure a good turnover in our clothing stock we now have a colour coded pricing system. When we change colours every six to eight weeks the old colour ticket items go to half price. Bargains galore! *Please note: For the month of August we will not be open on Saturdays. The shop will also be closed on Tuesday, August 1 and Tuesday August 8 as well as on August 15, a bank holiday. Normal hours will return from the first full week of September. For more information you can ring the shop on 689 314 350.
