August Weather

It's the Noche del Vino edition! My home village of Competa hosts its famous annual fiesta on the 15th August, The Night of the Wine. However, it's not just a night festival as celebrations start at lunchtime with a medieval market, the famous pressing of the grapes followed by music, singing and dancing in Plaza Vendimia. Then the evening festivities start around 10.00pm with speeches in the Plaza Almijara followed by more dancing and singing. The whole village has a great atmosphere and it draws crowds to the area. See pages 54 to 57 for more information on where to eat, drink and shop on the day. Also if you haven't been to Competa before take a look on pages 52 and 53 and you will see a map of the village of Competa which will help you find the Plaza Almijara and Plaza Vendimia the key locations for the festival. This month The Grapevine asks you to did deep in your pockets for a good cause, The Butterfly Skin Children’s Charity. On page 64 you can read about The Big Challenge! Jansen Riley, Chris Grenfell, Steve Twiselton (The Grapevine Magazine) and other mental athletes are going to do a 15km swim followed by a 250km Bike Ride and finishing with a 50km Run Race from Granada to Pico Veleta. This will be completed over 3 days to raise money for this Charity. To donate and support these athletes doing this incredible challenge go to www.gofundme.com/manage/trifit-challenge. t least 1,000 people gathered at the grandiose tomb of the late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco to protest against Madrid's plans to move his body, an AFP photographer said. Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975 when he died, is buried in a valley just outside Madrid in an imposing basilica carved into a mountain-face with a 150-metre (490-feet) cross towering over it.Known as the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), it is a deeply divisive symbol of a past that Spain still finds difficult to digest.

pain has become the new main entry point for asylumseekers fleeing Africa, an influx that European Union officials fear could exacerbate political tensions across the region over migration. Around 19,000 asylum-seekers arrived in Spain in the first five months of this year, almost as many as arrived there in all of 2017, a record year, and eclipsing for the first time the numbers flowing through north Africa to Italy. The surge has intensified in recent weeks as Italy's new government shut its ports to most asylum-seekers, rescue officials say. With the EU struggling to contain dissent over migration policy, some officials in Brussels say they worry that Spain could become a new flashpoint, even as overall numbers of arrivals into Europe from Africa are in sharp decline.

rom now on, using a cellphone while behind the wheel will carry bigger sanctions in Spain. Pere Navarro, the new head of the national traffic authority (DGT), announced plans to stiffen the penalties for a common habit that is closely tied to road accidents. Distractions at the wheel are the leading cause of death on Spanish roads, ahead of alcohol consumption and excessive speed. The DGT wants to enact reforms to subtract more points for recurring and dangerous traffic violations, while reducing the penalties for less frequent or dangerous offenses. Refresher courses for drivers will also add more points to their license (eight, rather than four). “We’re going to update the pointbased license. After 12 years, my own roadmap says we need to stop, take stock and use our accumulated experience to update and review the system,” said Navarro at a press conference about road deaths in 2017.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS What To Do If The Real Built/Plot Size Does Not Correspond With The Documented Areas On The Deed, In The Land Registry Or In The Cadastre

T

here are often discrepancies between the real meters of a property or plot and those which are registered in the Land Registry or Cadastre Office. This can be due to extensions being added to a property, or in the case of land, to the segregation of a plot from a larger plot, without reporting these changes to the correct authorities, (i.e. the Land Registry and the Cadastre office). These discrepancies can cause problems when applying for a mortgage as Banks will not finance a property that is not correctly registered. In order to rectify the situation a new deed must be made declaring the new construction or segregation and specifying the actual size. This would require a Certificate detailing the actual meters to be issued by a qualified Architect which should then be duly registered in the Land Registry. In reality the measurements in the Land Registry and the Cadastre Office rarely match, because the

16 The Grapevine

measurements in the Registry are from measurements taken by an Architect and the surface areas in the Cadastre Office are taken from aerial photographs. If you have any problems regarding the discrepancies between real measurements and those documented in either the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office you would need expert legal advice on the best way to rectify the situation. In most cases it can only be done by submitting documentation relating to the property, such as the Deed of Sale, the Deed of New Construction, plans, drawings, photographs, certificates etc. to the Cadastre Office so that their technical staff can proceed to update the specifications and modify the documented areas. There are also many cases where the property or plot is not registered under the name of the actual owner in the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office. In these cases it is not simply a matter of rectifying the measurements, but a matter of registering the property or plot for the first time. If this necessary, in addition to

submitting documentation to prove the physical reality of the plot or property you would also need to provide at least the last 4 years of IBI (LOCAL PROPERTY TAXES) receipts. To avoid all of these problems, we always recommend that before buying a plot or a property you should check the Land Registry and Cadastre office to ensure that the details are correctly documented. This process would require the assistance of a qualified expert who can make all of the necessary enquiries to confirm that everything is in order. Our company Marbellasolicitors Group has over 15 years experience, helping hundreds of clients to purchase properties and plots both on the coast and inland, so please don't hesitate to contact us for our advice on this or any other legal issue. the title of this article. “ 'Wine, women & song'? When do the women come in?” The answer, in terms of musicians, is in September. ¡Ellas! is a fourmember, all-female band – as you might guess from the name – and they will be playing at Bodegas Bentomiz on Sunday 16th of September. Like Thomas they played last year and were so popular they have been invited to return. Noche del Vino 2018 August 15th - Competa

c

ómpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta.

PLAZA ALMIJARA 11:00 The day begins with solemn mass in the honour of Our Lady of the Assumption in the parish church in the Plaza Almijara . PLAZA DE LA VENDIMIA 12.00 Treading of the Grapes 13.00 Awards ceremoy 14:00 Traditional free lunch of Migas, Bacaleo, salad, grapes and wines of Competa.. 15:30 Concert All day there is a traditional Medieval market from the Plaza Almijara to Plaza Vendimia. THE MALAGA FERIA Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th August.

T

historical event. In fact, the choice to celebrate the Malaga Fair in August comes from the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs, who on August, 19th 1487 re-conquered Malaga and gave the image of the Patron Saint of the city, Virgin of the Victory (Virgen de la Victoria), back to the Malagueños.

During the fair there are a large number of events and activities for all ages and free performances by various artists.

After being declared a popular festivity on August 15th, 1491 (when the Assumption of the Virgin is worshipped by Catholics worldwide) the celebrations started being carried along annually, and more and more processions and shows, as well as bullfights, were added to the festivity.

Malaga fair 2018 Dates for Malaga fair in 2018 is the 11th August (Saturday) until finish, Saturday 18th. Origins of the Malaga Feria The majority of, if not all, the fairs in Andalucia owe their origins to the ancient cattle fairs that used to take place in the biggest cities. That being said, the Feria de Málaga owes its origins to a

Nowadays, the Malaga Fair incorporates these two key days, so important to the history of the capital city of Costa del Sol. Two events you can’t miss out on during the Feria de Malaga are the Romeria to the Church of Santa María de la Victoria and the historic parade. The Romería takes place the first Saturday of the Malaga Fair (in 2018 being on August 11th), and it consists of a procession starting from the Town Hall and directed to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory (Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria). This parade celebrates the delivery of the city flag to the sanctuary mentioned above The historical parade, on the other hand, is celebrated on the Sunday after the last Saturday of Fair (in 2018 is August 19th), and it

recreates the entry of the Catholic Monarchs into the city. It usually starts with the delivery of the keys to the Abanderado (chosen among the famous people related to Malaga) at Plaza de la Aduana, and it ends in calle Alcazabilla, at the see of the Estudiantes brotherhood. Where is the Malga Feria held? At the Fair there are two options: The Day Fair and the Night Fair. Night Fair Located in a different location than the Day Fair, at Cortijo de Torres, the Night Fair is characterized by the large number of rides for all ages and a more comfortable temperature as during the day fair. At the fairgrounds you'll find places serving traditional food, fast food, stalls to buy pancakes and various stalls with all kinds of music.

The downtown streets are decorated throughout the duration of the fair. Folk music and dancing abound in the streets of the city, as well as music for all tastes where predominates the typical Verdiales music.

Concert-going – lots of concerts (mostly free) take place during Malaga fair week. Here’s a link to the programme Horse-shows – at the Real de la Feria every day at 4pm and 8pm.

What can you do at Malaga fair? Partying – the main activity accompanied by dancing verdiales (music and dances from the Malaga mountains) and sevillanas (typical dance from Seville) and plenty of drinking, usually Cartojal, a Malaga sweet wine or a rebujito (glass of fino or manzanilla sherry mixed with lemonade or Sprite) plus eating – plates of pescaíto (fried fish –

Funfairing – some seriously big and heart-stopping rides pack into the fairground, crowned by a ferris wheel with great views of Malaga from the top.

Bull-fighting – some of Spain’s top bullfighters take on their quota of five bulls the fair. Fights take place at the bullring in La Malagueta. Sports – sporting events take place during the week prior to the fair. These include a swim across the port, jabega races (find out more about these unusual boats), free yoga and an exhibition of waterpolo.

very first breath as a sufferer of the condition known as Butterfly skin. Butterfly Skin is a rare disease causing extreme fragility of the skin. The fault lies in a genetic mutation that fails to “glue” the layers of the skin together meaning that even a simple embrace can cause harm. Sadly, to date there is no cure. One in every 227 people carry the faulty gene so the condition can arise in any family unexpectedly. The birth of a child with Butterfly Skin is one of the most traumatic situations that a family can be faced with. During the first days and weeks the parents live with feelings of disappointment, loneliness and fear.

THE BIG CHALLENGE Raising Money For Children With The Rare Disease “Butterfly Skin”

W

hen my fellow Ironman Lanzarote friend Chris Grenfell asked me if I would like to be involved in a BIG CHALLENGE I knew it would definitely be tough as Chris had just carried a fridge full of beer 20 kms in aid of charity. The BIG CHALLENGE is based on the idea of a long course weekend, a typical IRONMAN (IM) training camp in which triathletes complete the IM distance over three days instead of one. But as is typical of (slightly!) mad endurance athletes Chris thought it would be good to incorporate the 50km SubidaPicoValeta race into our weekend! He also thought we may as well cycle to the start in Granada on the Saturday and cycle part of the course whilst we were at it. The warm up for these two tough days will be a 15km sea swim in the waters of Marbella.

64 The Grapevine

At the time of this article going to print there are two of us doing the three complete days but we also have athletes taking part in individual elements of the weekend including members of Club Deportivo Axarlon. Friday 10th 15km Sea Swim Marbella . Saturday 11th 250km Bike Ride From Marbella upto to Pradollano, the ski resort in Granada. . Sunday 12th 50km Running Race from Granada to Pico del Veleta. Pico del Veleta is the third highest peak of the Iberian peninsula 3394metres

The work of DEBRA, The Butterfly Skin Childrens Charity at this time is highly influential. Through the expertise and experience of our Health Professional Team our aim is to ease these feelings by educating the family and their local health professionals about the condition. This aids their understanding and assures them that they are NOT ALONE More information about the disease can be found at: .

CAS NEWS This Months Update

K

urt and Laura from Seacrest Kennels and Cattery in Nerja will be hosting their 13th Annual Hog Roast BBQ in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday 28 of September at 8:00pm. This event is always a fun evening to mark the end of the summer with music provided by DJ Kapt'n Krap. There will be a fun raffle and all proceeds from the night will go directly to helping abandoned dogs and cats in our area. Tickets cost €20 per person which includes a hog roast buffet with complimentary salads and a half bottle of wine. (Vegetarian options are available.) Booking in advance is essential with Laura and Kurt at 95 252 1426. All too often in Andalucia young puppies are dumped in rubbish bins and in June, six one day old pups were found abandoned to this fate in Maro. Caring for such young pups is a difficult task requiring feeding every two hours, around the clock, made that much harder when you multiply this by six. A Costa Animal Society (CAS) volunteer agreed to help the person who rescued the pups by taking on the care of three of the tykes until they were weaned. They reached this first step in early July and were then housed in kennels as they became more independent. The first female found a new home with a local family when she was just four to five weeks old. This is normally too young to adopt a pup but under these circumstances this was the best option at the time.

finalised the adoption last month. Nina has now settled into her new life in a beach flat near El Morche where she gets lots of love and several walks a day from her new owner. Plus Nina still gets to spend time with Humphrey, her old kennel mate, when she goes in for the occasional day care visit. CAS Shop News With the arrival of summer the Costa Animal Society (CAS) shop has all you need in the way of shorts, sandals, T-shirts, beachwear, best-selling books, etc, all at crazy low prices. We are located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. Additionally, we are always eager to hear from people who are interested in becoming shop volunteers. One four hour shift once a week makes a big difference. There are always two volunteers per shift making for a safe, relaxed, congenial environment. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm. *Please note: The CAS shop has a new phone number: 643 212 409

TOMATINA TOMATO FIGHT (VALENCIA)

Brunol, Valencia.

B

unol in Valencia is home to La Tomatina, the famous battle of the tomatoes, which historically was for warring towns and villages in the region to work out their woes. Now, about 50,000 people from all over Spain visit for fun to throw about 100 tons of ripe tomatoes at each other for an hour. Afterward, everyone is hosed down in the streets. Usually, the festival is held the last week in August. If you plan on coming, wear old clothes and leave your mobile phone and camera at home or your hotel (unless you have protective, waterproof cases for them).

One of these young people caused one of the participant to fall The participant flew into a fit of rage, started to hit everything in his path. There was a market stall that fell victim to the furious crowd: people started to pelt each other with tomatoes until the local forces ended that vegetable battle.

The following year, the young people picked a quarrel by their own decision and brought the tomatoes from home. Although the police broke up the early tradition in the following years, the young boys had made history without being conscious about it. La Tomatina was banned in the early 50s. La Tomatina Festival was finally allowed and became an official festivity. As a result of the report of Javier Basilio, broadcasted in the Spanish Television Program called Informe Semanal, the festivity started to be known in the rest of Spain. Since then, the number of participants has increased year after year as well as the excitement about La Tomatina Festival. In 2002, La Tomatina of BuĂąol was declared Festivity of International Tourist Interest by the Secretary Deparment of Tourism due to its success. La Tomatina begins at 11.00am with a bang and ends at 12.00am on point with another!

Since getting sacked from my job I've started a dating site for chickens. I've stopped it though as I was struggling to make hens meet.

I've recently developed an irrational fear of elevators. I'm now taking steps to avoid them.

My girlfriend told me that she slept with 5 people before we met. I’m fed up with my mates, Three times now they have agreed to go to a Whitesnake gig with me and then not showed up.

I'm not sure what shocked the postman more . The fact that I came to the door completely naked, or the fact that I knew where he lived.

Here I go again on my own. I found a horror book written in braille. Something bad is going to happen; I can feel it. My wife is still mad at me because I accidentally put superglue on her pen a few days ago. She just can’t seem to let it go. My wife left me because of my obsession with astrology. I guess I should have seen the signs.

My lab partner invented a device that will steal other people’s ideas and then delete it from their memory. Why didn’t I think of that? I got an email from Google today saying "At Google Earth, we can read maps backwards!” I sat there and thought “that's just spam.” My wife said she was going to leave me because I always act like a flamingo. I had to put my foot down.

I usually wouldn't mind but I was only 20 minutes late!

I gave my wife £200 and told her to go out on Thursday and leave me in peace to watch the World Cup. "I won't need that much," she laughed. "You will," I said. "It's got to last you five weeks." I saw this advert in a window that said: “TV for sale, £1, volume stuck on full.” I thought, “I can’t turn that down.”

NO MORE BOTTLED WATER Cost Effective and Good for You and The Environment

S

witching from bottled water to home water filtration is one of the fastest, easiest and most impactful steps to live healthy, save money and protect the planet. Home water purification is by far the most economical, most convenient and most effective way of producing high quality, healthy water. Safer drinking water anytime. When you filter your water, you are ensured that you have healthy drinking water, compared to the bottled water and tap water that comes straight from the water treatment plants. Unfiltered water, even if it has come from the water treatment plant still have contaminants such as lead. A water filtration system removes these chemicals, other impurities and most of the 2,100 known

toxins in drinking water are removed. Protect the environment. With a home water filtration system, you will not be adding more rubbish into landfills. On the average, it will take 450 years for plastic bottles to disintegrate. Minimize aggravation of skin conditions. Substances such as heavy metals, fluoride and chlorine in the water can aggravate skin conditions. This includes psoriasis and eczema, especially in children. Cost Savings If you are currently buying bottled water, you’ll realize a big saving from installing a water filter at home

Reduce plumbing repair bills. You can reduce plumbing repairs, and cut your repair bills when you use filtered water. Heavy metals, minerals and chemicals in unfiltered water can cause damage to your plumbing system. It is not only the pipes that could be affected but also other home appliances that use water. This includes your water dispenser, refrigerator ice maker, dishwasher and washing machine. Enhance disaster preparedness. If a sewer line bursts near your house, it can cause water contamination. However, you will be protected in you have an water filtration system installed for the whole house.

A Home water filtration system will improve the overall purity, taste and smell of your drinking water. See advert below to book your free on site survey

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Beyond the Purple

W

e all love daisies for their simple smiley faces and especially those that flower through midsummer! From our earliest childhood we draw them, in teenage years we pluck their petals and, even into adulthood, we tend to doodle them. Daisies are big sellers in the garden centre in springtime when they are at their most shining but it's the summer-flowering daisies that are so loved simply because flowers are rather sparse on the ground during the hottest months. Gaillardias, rudbeckias, helianthus and coreopsis are some of the summer lovers but the best of all is probably echinacea or cone flower.

sunset shades, fruity mango and spicy paprika hues. The chunky central cone is often lost under a flurry of petals in new varieties and there are double, frilled and reflexed petals too. Their name stems from the Greek echinos meaning a hedgehog; their somewhat prickly central cone does indeed look somewhat hedgehog-like! Some call it the hedgehog coneflower. Daisies are what we call composite flowers which means that the central mass is actually hundreds of tiny fertile flowers which the birds, bees and butterflies home in on to collect nectar. The outer showy 'petals' are sterile flowers used to flag and attract passing pollinators. Once fertilised, these outer florets drop off and the cone turns into the seed head. These will hold on the plant well into late autumn; they look great as a contrast to tawny wispy grasses and the birds go crazy for all those seeds, so don´t be too quick to cut them down.

Most of you will recognise the name because of its medicinal properties; it is well known for warding off winter colds and it has been in cultivation for hundreds of years specifically for this purpose. As an ornamental, it has surged in popularity over recent years with breeders in Holland and the U.S. Echinaceas belong to the group battling for supremacy; the moody known as herbaceous perennials purple of echinacea purpurea has been upstaged by summer colours, which means they need cutting

right down during winter (after the birds have had their fun) and they will shoot through strongly again in early spring, the clumps getting bigger yearly. In cooler northern climes, the plants have a tendency to be short-lived perennials, sometimes only lasting five years or so, but I've never found that to be the case here; they seem much happier in our drier conditions and they are, of course, a prairie plant. They are very cold hardy, reported to survive as low as -20C but too much cold and damp together seems to be detrimental to them. Yellow strains of echinaceas are usually crosses from e. paradoxa which is a species from dry habitats and, thus, they are not too happy in moist climates. So, as often happens, too much breeding can expose problems in performance. But even if you only get five years out of them, for what they cost they are well worth it. If longevity is important to you and you live in a wet winter area, choose the original e. purpurea (which will often self-seed too) or the older breedings; the Ruby series, Alba which is a pale green almost white and Magnus, a pretty rosy-purple if you can find them

they are all good. The yellow, orange, peach colours are perfectly happy in drier Mediterranean climes. Once settled in, coneflowers can make some height, maybe up to 1m tall, though in dryer, harder conditions 0.5m is more normal. They need well-drained soil and will take full sun, dappled shade or the sort of situation where they will receive around half a day of sunshine; this is sufficient to keep them in good flower. Deadhead during the spring and summer months to encourage prolific flushes of flowering well into autumn, leaving October flowers to set seed for the birds or, maybe, to expand your own plants. Once planted, leave them alone; they do not like being transplanted so choose your spot carefully. Otherwise it's an easy and tolerant plant, ideal if you are a novice gardener! Massed they look stunning and the cut flowers last for ages indoors too. They are one of our top pollinator plants; butterflies adore them, it's a visual feast watching them hovering over the rainbow range of daisies and just one more reason for planting

them. Once you've got your plants, you can easily make them go further! Root cuttings can be taken in early winter from the dormant plants. Gently scrape away the soil to expose the fleshy roots and you will need to cut away a section, approx. 10cm long, with a healthy shoot coming from it. Pot this and it will soon develop into a nice new plant. You can also split large clumps or, collect some seeds before the birds take them, sow into a seed tray and leave it outside all winter to cold stratify the seeds; they will germinate with the arrival of warmer springtime weather. Traditionally the plant has long been used against the common cold and sore throats, toothache, burns and in the treatment of poison ivy wheals. Teas would be concocted from the long fleshy tap roots for treatment and general strengthening of the immune system; the leaves and flowers also have medicinal properties but are milder. Today we still use it as an immune-system strengthener, as a viral and bacterial anti-

infection, blood purifier, antiinflammatory agent, for curing skin rashes and as an antidote to insect and snake bites. Most herbal shops would stock it in pill form. But if you feel a cold coming on, make this tasty and immuneboosting tea: 2 cups of boiling water, 1 cup of echinacea leaves/flowers, 1 culm of lemon grass and 1 sprig of spearmint. Steep them altogether for 15 minutes and strain. Lemon juice/honey/stevia can be added to personal taste. If you make the tea with roots, they are much more bitter and stronger tasting. It is so much more than a pretty smiley face!

The race will be the 73rd edition of the Vuelta a España and will be the final Grand Tour of the 2018 cycling season. The race is scheduled to start in Málaga and finish in Madrid. Nine explosive summit finish stage will mark the route of the 2018 Vuelta a España balanced by an opening time trial and longer 32.7-kilometre test against the clock in the third week, similar to the one Chris Froome (Sky)

won in 2017. Stage two kicks off a series of nine summit finishes. Most of the mountain days are short stages, between 150 and 200 kilometres. Race Director Javier Guillén revealed a route with just one stage over the 200km mark. Stage 11 is the longest of the race, totalling 208.8km. After the Caminito del Rey summit finish on day two the Vuelta will climb to finish at La Alfaguara, La Covatilla, La Camperona, Les Praeres, Lagos de Covadonga, Monte Oiz and Andorra. The Tour of Spain lives up to its name by continuing visiting new corners in the Iberian Peninsula. It takes in three new summit finishes in its drive from Andalusia and Murcia to the north, skirting the Portuguese border to Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country and finally Andorra.
