Editors Note... As we say goodbye to the annual fair in Competa we don't have long to wait until another festival arrives. On the 15th August Competa is host to “Noche del Vino” (Night of the Wine). It is, in fact a day long and night festival, starting around midday and ending in the early hours of the following morning. It´s a great time to visit Competa to experience the atmosphere of the village and of course to taste the local wine. More information can be found on pages 54 to pages 57 along with inside information on the best places to eat and drink in the area on the day. Also this month we have a music fest on Sunday 25th August where rock, blues, funk, soul, reggae, ska, r&b & indie will all be featured! Included in the line-up are some of Andalucia’s hottest musicians, who will be performing at SCIROCCO in Puente Don Manuel (Viñuela area) for an afternoon and evening of live music from 13:30h to 24:30h. This colourful event will also include side stalls, children's entertainment, a well being zone, plus a choice of refreshments and street food ranging from BBQ to vegan and vegetarian options more information on page 86. Lots going on in the month of August. Enjoy and keep Reading The Editor

retaliation if we did not back down [over the Valley of the Fallen] and this is part of the strategy of retaliation,” said Francis Franco, one of Franco’s grandsons. Spain’s acting deputy prime minister, Carmen Calvo, said the government had a “solid argument, documents and legal position to defend public ownership” of the palace, which is advertised for sale online at more than €5m (£4.5m).

eteran crooner is the "biological father" of a Spanish man whose mother had a brief affair with the singer in 1975, a court has ruled. The ruling in Spain is a victory for former ballerina Maria Edite Santos and her son Javier Sánchez, 43, who began the paternity claim three decades ago. Iglesias, 75, had refused to provide DNA, but the judge said there was an "obvious physical resemblance". The singer has eight other children, including pop star Enrique Iglesias. Julio Iglesias is one of the most successful Latin artists of all time, having sold more than 300 million records in 14 languages. The singer, who won the Grammy lifetime achievement award this year, was not present at the court in Valencia. Delivering the verdict, Judge José Miguel Bort said the decision was reached in part because of the resemblance between the two men and on the basis of Ms Edite's testimony. He said she had provided credible evidence of her week-long affair with the singer at the time her son was conceived.. The possibility that sexual relations took place between them is not unlikely nor preposterous,"

pain’s socialist government has claimed ownership of Francisco Franco’s summer palace in Galicia in its latest clash with the former dictator’s descendants, who have opposed a plan to exhume his remains from a state mausoleum outside Madrid. The decision to move Franco from his tomb in the Valley of the Fallen, which is carved into a mountainside to the north of the capital and seen by many Spaniards as a monument to fascism, was suspended by the country’s supreme court in June pending appeals by his family. Public opinion remains divided over the 1936 to 1939 Spanish civil war, which tore apart families and communities, and the legacy of the ensuing far-right dictatorship that ended with Gen Franco’s death in 1975. More than half a million people died during the civil war and an estimated 150,000 were killed by Franco’s regime, while 450,000 were forced to leave Spain, historians estimate. Spain’s justice ministry said in a statement on Thursday it had presented a claim to a local court in the north-west region of Galicia, arguing that the sale of the Pazo de Meirás palace to Franco was fraudulent. “They [the government] already threatened us that there would be
he search has been called off for a woman missing from a cruise ship in the Mediterranean. The 63-year-old Korean woman, reported to be wearing ‘pink pyjamas’, fell from the Norwegian Epic ship on Saturday north west of the Spanish island of Menorca.A search was launched, with the ship sailing back for two hours to the spot where she was last seen. Helicopters, a plane and boats were involved, with passengers also looking over the decks to see if they could see her. The woman, who couldn’t swim, was last seen at 1am that morning on her balcony. The ship was heading to Cannes in France to Palma Majorca, but later docked in Barcelona instead. Passenger Rebekah Sanderlin, tweeted: “ We spent all day yesterday in the area where she was believed to have been lost. For hours 1000s of passengers stared at the water looking for her, some with binoculars.

wenty-eight people have been hurt in an accident involving a fair ride in a town near Seville in Spain. Local Spanish media report a spinning disc attraction appears to have fallen apart, but the nature of the accident is not yet clear. Seville's municipal emergency services said nine of the injured were taken to local hospitals. The town hall of La Rinconada said in a statement that the ride had passed safety inspections. It added that local authorities are investigating what might have caused the machinery to malfunction.

The Importance of the Tax Form 2010
T
he importance of the tax form 210 (annual deem income tax) for nonresident property owners. In last few weeks the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria) has been carrying out a new campaign to look for and identify those NONRESIDENTS who own real estate properties in Spain but have not submitted the Tax returns The Tax Returns that all NonResident Property owners should be submitting annually is called, Modelo 210, and the period for submitting this declaration is the calendar year, (i.e. 1st January to 31st December each year). The Annual Deem Income Tax due for the tax year 2018, must be paid before the 31st December 2019. The Tax Office is sending amicable letters to those Nonresident property owners who, to date, have failed to present and pay this tax. This communication
16 The Grapevine
enables those who have never presented the “Modelo 210, to be able to rectify the situation voluntarily, without paying any fines or interest. Many NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNERS have not paid these annual taxes, not because they wish to commit tax fraud, but due to mere ignorance of the existence of this tax. Usually because nobody has ever informed them. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the Law is not an excuse for not paying this tax, so we recommend any NONRESIDENT who owns a real estate property in Spain seeks tax advice to make sure they know what their tax obligations in Spain are. The tax form 210 is operated on a self-assessed system. This means that Non-residents have the obligation to prepare, calculate and pay their own Deem Income Tax every year.
Nowadays, the Inland Revenue computers can easily check who is not paying these taxes, so it is important to ensure that the annual tax form 210 is paid and submitted on time every year. As this is not an easy process, we recommend that non-resident property owners should get professional assistance to prepare these annual taxes. If you are a NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNER IN SPAIN, you still have plenty of time to comply with this Tax law. It's better to do it before the Inland Revenue contacts you. Jose M. From Sourcing a Particular Item to Full Interior Design.
I
n 2005 we started out in our shop in Cรณmpeta supplying Moroccan furnishings, accessories and gifts. We soon realised that Moorish decor worked surprising well with clean-lined modern furniture and began to look for suppliers of varying styles from different countries. Via both our website and shop in Cรณmpeta we now offer a wide range of fabulous decor from the rustic to the contemporary to furnish not only your home and terrace but to add finishing touches to every nook and cranny. The shop and the website can best be supplied as the same flavour. On the website we need continuity, we have thousands of products sourced from many far flung places. As we import to fulfil customer orders we fill up the loads with different goodies that then make their way into the shop. Or if my husband isn't on the ball into our home! In the shop we keep things changing so that there is always a reason to visit. Our displays always include, Moroccan decor, solid wooden contemporary, classic and ethnic

furniture, lights, lanterns, cushions, rugs and throws We currently have around 180m of showrooms spread over 6 rooms rammed from ceiling to floor with beautiful decor in different styles. Through both the shop and the website we offer a variety of services. From sourcing a particular item to full interior design. Starting with Sourcing. Mostly what that means, is "Can you find me something like this?" The answer is, we visit as many trade shows as we can every year and through the last 14 years have made a diverse range of contacts. We have worked with many of our agents and suppliers for more than a decade, some are as new to us as this month. Through this constantly expanding network we can source almost anything, bespoke, ethnic or contemporary items from our selection of European and Asian suppliers, Customers quite often pop in with a picture or email us a Pinterest board and ask us to find a certain something. Then the hunt begins.
are great for new homes or sprucing up existing ones. The furniture sets are simply products from our best selling ranges grouped together to offer you the key pieces for a room at a discount. With the key bits taken care of you can focus on accessorising. Furniture Packages include everything from furniture and furnishings to bedding and knives and forks. If you have a busy life and just don't have the time to focus on furnishing your home we have put together a number of packages once again based on our best selling lines. All you need to do is choose a style and a colour scheme. Each package ends up being slightly different and we're quite happy to tweak it to suit your individual tastes. Our bespoke furniture packages are entirely designed around you. To most people the term "Interior design" is a bit scary and belongs in penthouse apartments and pages of glossy magazines. Actually at Interior Design School they teach you a lot of practical stuff and often this is the advice that customers really need. Our service can be exactly what you want it to be whether you have a whole plot or an individual room we'll work with you. You can have as much or a little input as you like. If budget isn't an issue we will create you a spectacular home with no expense spared. However creating a stunning home doesn't need to be expensive or daunting. For more information send us an email with an overview of your requirements and we'll get back to you with some initial ideas. It doesn't cost a cent unless you decide to buy. See our website for more information about our approach to design, to browse our galleries, for project overviews and customer testimonials or have a look at beautiful decor.

HYDRATING IN THE HOT WEATHER Remember to Take On Water
W
hen you spend time outside in hot weather you probably start to feel thirsty in a fairly short time. That's a normal response and one you should pay close attention to—it means your body needs more water to deal with the heat. Learn why this happens, the symptoms of dehydration, and how to ensure you are drinking enough water when the temperatures rise. Your Body Needs Water to Deal With Heat Your body functions best within a certain temperature range, and when you get too warm, it needs to cool off. There are a couple of ways your body accomplishes this cooldown. First, your blood vessels dilate to increase blood flow to the skin. This allows excess heat to radiate away from your body. Then, you also start to sweat. Evaporation of the sweat cools the skin, which in turn helps to cool the whole body. But, the problem is that excessive sweating can lead to dehydration.
temperature's hot, especially if you're working or exercising in the heat. Drinking water helps replenish the fluids lost by excessive sweating. If you don't get enough water, you may become dehydrated, and the combination of hot temperatures and dehydration can lead to serious heat-related illnesses. Signs You Need More Water For most people, thirst is a very good indication that you need more water. Even before you become dehydrated, you'll feel thirsty, and your mouth may feel dry or sticky. After a while, you may also become lethargic and fuzzyheaded. Other signs include reduced urine output (and the urine is dark yellow). You might even notice your eyes look a bit sunken and feel dry. Even a little dehydration can be a problem, so don't ignore those early signs. Even mild dehydration reduces your ability to think clearly and your physical coordination.
Tips for Hydrating in Hot Weather Start hydrating right away. It's easier to maintain your fluid balance if you start out in a wellhydrated state. Schedule regular beverage breaks and keep a water bottle handy so you can take frequent sips of water while you work or exercise. Choose electrolyte-replacing drinks for maximum water absorption when you are exercising for more than an hour or when you are sweating excessively during exercise in hot weather. Drink water after you've finished work or an exercise session. Snack on fresh fruits that are rich in water, like berries, watermelon, peaches, and nectarines. Don't drink large amounts of plain water all at once—this can lead to hyponatremia or water-toxicity. This can also affect long-distance runners during races who push too many fluids. It is best to drink when thirsty during exercise and not push fluids.
You sweat more when the

HAPPY FEET An Interview with Ruth, Competa’s New Foot Health Practitioner
T
his month I interviewed a lovely lady Ruth who has recently moved to the village of Competa with her partner Dave. Ruth is an experienced Foot Health Practitioner and has set up a new clinic where the MAPFRE office used to be in Competa. Most people will develop foot problems at some stage in their lives, and as the average age of the population increases, so does the demand for the services of a Foot Health Practitioner. The services Ruth provides range from relatively minor disorders to major disabling problems. Even before Ruth opened her clinic, word got around about what she does and how good she is. This resulted in her taking private appointments at her home. Having regular customers even before the clinic officially opened is a testament to Ruth’s practice. She is able to alleviate, prevent, or correct foot disorders and derives great satisfaction from this and from the gratitude expressed by her patients following treatments. I asked Ruth how she got into this
38 The Grapevine
line of work. She explained that she started to work at a Nursing home and met a Chiropodist who came in regularly to help the elderly patients. Ruth worked alongside this lady for a while and one day she was asked why she hadn’t considered training herself. Ruth found the work extremely rewarding, some patients even cried over the results but as she looked into the qualifications the cost was just too high. Then she learned the news she had inherited some money from a previous elderly next door neighbour, so it was meant to be! The money was used to train and gain the appropriate qualifications and soon she was working officially as a Foot Health Practioner. Initially mobile, then 5years ago she started to work from her own business premises in St Neots. The services a Foot Health Practitioner can offer includes toenail trimming, corn and callus removal, verrucae and fungal treatments and the management of ingrown toenails. Diabetic foot assessments and monitoring can also be carried out along with general advice and guidance on
The business was extremely successful so what made her want to start again in a new country? Ruth explained she had met a new partner; they were living separately and had regularly visited friends in Competa and often thought about buying a holiday home together in the village. Then Dave was made redundant and it seemed an opportune moment to make a change to their relationship and lives. So they decided to sell their individual homes and move to Spain and live together. Ruth had already created a successful business so why not just do it again? They drove over at the end of January this year when it was snowing in the UK, blizzards in France, snow again in Madrid and then on their arrival to Competa it was beautiful sunshine they couldn’t have been happier! They bought the old MAPFRE office in the village and have renovated it into a Clinic for Ruth’s patients. Since living in Competa she has seen how so many of the elderly totally neglect self-care or are too embarrassed to ask for help. Long nails or painful feet can cause us to alter how we walk. In elderly people this can lead to falling along with ill-fitting footwear, for example sloppy old slippers. One evening Ruth spent 1.5 hrs with a lady who fell, she helped her off the floor, her nails were so long and slippers didn’t fit or support her at all she explained it was just so sad and unnecessary. It was lovely to meet Ruth and I am fairly sure her business in Competa will be as successful as it was in the UK. She is caring and compassionate and obviously enjoys her job. If you would like to make an appointment with Ruth please see her contact details on her advert opposite.

Ingredients: Peeled prawns (20 approximately) 5 cloves of garlic Parsley Chili (dried cayenne pepper) Pimentón (red paprika powder) Extra Virgin Olive oil Salt Prep: 20 min Cook:10 min Yield: 4 servings
GAMBAS PIL PIL Have You Perfected It Yet ?
Preparation: Chop the garlic in slices, some chili (depending on your preferences) and parsley.
T
Add quite a lot of olive oil in an earthenware casserole until covering the entire bottom and heat it up.
A good example of this would be the delicious “pilpil prawns”. This crustacean, the dish is primarily made out of, can be found along the Andalusian coast and is a popular ingredient in many traditional and modern recipes. In fact there is no tapas bar that appreciates itself that wouldn’t offer it in this version. It’s a classic, fast, simple, tasty and healthy- you cannot ask for more. However it is not only the quality of the prawns, but the “pil-pil” sauce that provides it with character (depending on the quantity of chili, it might have a lot of character) and its unmistakable flavor. It couldn’t be easier: A clay pot is heated up and a good splash of extra virgin olive oil is added until the entire bottom is covered (don’t leave any free space, go for it!). Incorporate several cloves of garlic cut into slices and cayenne chili to your liking and sauté everything.
When the oil is hot, add the garlic, chili and parsley. Once all these ingredients are slightly fried, incorporate the peeled prawns (without head) and cook them in the pot for three or four minutes, until they have a pink color. Keep in mind that the earthenware pot keeps the contents warm up to half an hour, so the shrimps will continue cooking once removed from the fire. Sprinkle a teaspoon of paprika powder (spicy or sweet) over everything and some salt.
Cómpeta
he Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine cannot exist without good olive oil, neither without garlic! And that for many foreigners in “exorbitant” quantities that challenge their knowledge, but to which one can get used to effortlessly.

PROTECT YOURSELF IN THE SUN Proper Use of Sunscreen in the Sun
T
he sun is a star that humans have admired for thousands and thousands of years, and is accorded countless virtues. Medically, it enables the human body to produce the vitamin D necessary to maintain bone health. While cautious daily exposure to the sun may be beneficial, too much exposure — too often and for too long — carries several risks. Too much sun can have immediate effects (sunburn or sun stroke, for example), but can also be pernicious, leading to skin cancer. This is the most common type of cancer in Canada, with more than 80,000 people diagnosed each year. Less frequently, overexposure to the sun can cause eye problems, bad skin reactions related to the intake of certain medications, premature ageing of the skin, or immunosuppression, a weakening of the body’s ability to fight certain viruses. As well, some people may be hypersensitive (allergic) to the sun.
46 The Grapevine
TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM THE SUN When going out in the sun, the key is to use common sense, by learning to approach it with caution — and by using a few tricks! Here are the most important: Choose your time of exposure: before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m., the sun is less strong Seek out shade, by looking for a covered area or using a parasol Wear a large-brimmed hat Wear sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection (look for a label indicating 100% UV protection) Apply a sunscreen with a protection factor of 30 or higher. Don’t forget your lips. Protect babies under a year old with a physical screen (light clothing, a parasol, etc.) CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN There are many quality products on the market. Good protection requires a sunscreen that works against both UVA and UVB rays, because these two types of solar rays are equally dangerous. Several ingredients used in sunscreens are effective against
Another important aspect to consider when choosing a sunscreen is the SPF, that is, the sun protection factor. The SPF only indicates the protection against UVB rays, it does not apply to UVA rays. The higher the SPF, the better the sunscreen protects against UVB. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended. That means that the sunscreen blocks 97% of the UVB rays reaching the skin. The following table shows the effectiveness of different SPFs. PERCENTAGE OF UVB RAYS BLOCKED ACCORDING TO SPF SPF 4 - 75% 8 - 87.5% 15 - 93% 30 - 97% 40 - 97.5% 50 - 98 % 60 - 98.3% 100 - 99% Choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is especially important if you have light skin, if you are taking photosensitizing medication, or if you have a
To advertise call 637 028 873
disease that makes you particularly sensitive to the sun (e.g., lupus). Young children can also benefit from a sunscreen with an SPF greater than 30. This advice is equally valid for people who work outdoors. For those who have already had a skin cancer, a sunscreen of at least SPF 60 should be preferred to ensure adequate protection in case of poorer application. Finally, an aerosol sunscreen is recommended for acne-prone skin. PROPER USE OF SUNSCREEN Even the best sunscreen will be of no use if you forget to put it on. As well, its protection is greatly diminished if not used correctly. ŸApply sunscreen in sufficient quantity. For adults, follow the rule of two tablespoons: that’s the minimum quantity recommended for the entire body — legs, arms and face included. If you spread on only half the recommended
quantity, you reduce your protection by as much. ŸFor lips, purchase a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30. ŸApply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going outside. ŸReapply sunscreen about every two hours or after swimming or intense physical activity (regardless of the SPF). Always apply to dry skin. ŸWear sunscreen at all times (beware of light clouds that do not really block the sun’s UV rays). ŸVerify the expiry date of the product you’re using and replace it if it has been open for more than a year. ŸFor babies less than six months old, apply sunscreen on parts of the body that are not covered by clothing (face, neck, ears, hands). When you expose yourself to the sun’s rays, you have to slather on sunscreen at all times. Having a tan is by no means cause for exception, because the protection offered is equivalent to an SPF of no more than 4. Even though your
skin may not get as red, the sun’s rays are still getting through. Moreover, self-tanning lotions do not offer any protection against the sun. It is also false to believe that being in the water protects you from the sun’s rays. Water reflects up to 50% of the sun’s rays and will not save you from a good sunburn if you stay in for a few hours. There are several sunscreens on the market that stay on even in water. The label “water resistant” means that protection is maintained for 40 minutes in the water, while a sunscreen labelled “waterproof” gives you 80 minutes of protection in the water. It is also important to know that clothing wet from swimming or sweat loses its protection against the sun. Enjoy the summer, while exercising caution in the sun!

The Grapevine Grapevine 13 53 The
Noche del Vino 2019 August 15th C贸mpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta's in C贸mpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. MOUNTAIN WINE & MUSIC 2019 Flamenco and Swing at Bodegas Bentomiz
I
sn't it hot! I can hardly breath! I feel sorry for the farmhands at this time of year. The grape harvest is tough, with people picking from 7.30 til 2, usually under the glare of the blazing sun – to get the fruit in and process them. The half hour break at 11.30 is well earned. The timing makes sense – it's too hot to work in the afternoon and natural to sleep through the heat. The long cool evenings are when you can have some fun. And Bodegas Bentomiz's Mountain Wine & Music concerts provide the perfect summer party. Based near Sayalonga the winery makes the Ariyanas wine range. The wines are served in Michelinstarred restaurants all over Europe and Bodega offers a winery tour and wine tasting at 12.30 daily from Wednesday to Sunday. Guests can also stay for a gourmet lunch, served at 14:00. But the concerts are really special!
58 The Grapevine
For these events guests arrive after 8 o'clock to enjoy a glass or two and tapas in the beautiful wine-salon. At nine it the sun, disappearing behind the western hills, fills the sky with warm golden light. Cool breezes from the sea soften the heat and everyone comes down to enjoy an open-air, 3 course gourmet buffet with more wine. Seated in the forecourt, between the bodega and its vineyard you enjoy views all the way from the sierra to the Mediterranean Sea!
perfect setting in which to witness their interpretation of this most passionate dance form. If that gets you in the mood to dance, you might enjoy the 8th September gig: it will be Swing with El Trio de Tete to get you up on your feet. Recommended by the Asociación de Jazz de Malaga –who commented that this group will do a fantastic concert – they consist of guitarist and singer Ricky Vivar, keyboard player Diego Suárez and sax player Tete Leal. Nothing is more than swing! …
The music's on from 10.30 (til about midnight). On the 25th of August two thrilling flamenco dancers – brother and sister Sergio and Marina Aranda will perform backed by 3 musicians. Both have danced since childhood and acquired big reputations as leaders in the art of flamenco. But as Malagueños it will be a special pleasure to see them perform here, in the hills of the Axarquia, in one of the most beautiful places in Malaga. The dark mountains, the glittering sea and the cool moonlight will be the
…Unless it's the music of local band Aire Flamenco. We've known Judit Román for years and she and her band partner perform a wonderful mix of pop and accessible flamenco. On the 15th September they'll be performing, along with a “bailaora” – a flamenco dancer – in another inspiring display of talent. All that vigorous dancing - makes me feel hot just thinking about it! I think I need a glass of wine to cool down… See advert opposite

CENTRO PLAZA An Interview With Rachel and Paul From The Centro Plaza in Sayalonga
T
his month I interviewed Rachel and Paul from Centro Plaza in Sayalonga. In actual fact what happened was I arrived early and decided to have a cup off coffee in the Sayalonga Plaza when Paul came in to do the same thing. He asked to join me and we chatted at length about his life and future plans. It was a great informal conversation which actually made me late for my actual interview with Rachel! Paul is an interesting, amenable, vibrant man that has been coming to the area for years visiting friends and travelling. Approximately 2 years ago he made Sayalonga his home and looked to invest time in a business. Rachel and Paul met in Sayalonga one day and got to know each other. Rachel had to finish her travelling as she became unwell and was looking at staying closer to home. Saylonga is where her parents and sister live so it seemed natural for her to return to the village and look for the next challenge. Both Rachel and Paul wanted to do something for the village without imposing on other

businesses. So last year they opened up their first shop together in the Sayalonga Plaza selling arts, crafts, haberdashery items and UK branded wool. The shop evolved over time as the locals told them what they wanted it to have in stock. In less than 12 months they had filled the shop to overflowing! As a result of the locals requests the shop expanded into toys, clothes, stationary and then more recently into English food items. A friend of Rachel’s mum had an empty location just off the Sayalonga Plaza and suggested they move into it as it was a bigger premise over two floors. A few months ago they completed the arduous challenge of moving their stock across the Plaza to their new location. This is where I visited them and they really do have everything you can think of in stock. Their food items have just kept expanding and now they offer an online store that can also be combined with a free delivery service. Take a look at centroplaza.com for a list of their products both ambient and chilled.
provide a printing service for T Shirts, mugs or anything else you want printing on! Also, Rachel will always look into any request for a product or service suggested by the locals. She is eager to help the local community especially those not fit enough to travel to the coast for the items they need. Rachel and Paul also offer children´s activities throughout the summer. From Thursday through to Sunday from 8pm until late they offer a variety of activities for just 1.50 euro for example play dough making and bath bomb making. Also they offer colouring activities every night for children to participate in. For the adults they also run regular evening classes. The last jewellery making class held at their premises was extremely successful and they are looking to provide anther date for this class in the near future. If anyone would like to hold a class in the shop please do get in contact with Rachel and Paul. For more information take a look at the advert opposite and their new online store.

found out a week later that she had picked up bacterium meningococcus Y. This lethal bacterium caused her a sepsis and multi-organic shock. She was on the critical vital list for 5 days and under induced coma for 10 days, until she pulled out the respiratory tubes that kept her sedated. During the first 72 hours in the Intensive Care Unit she was given medication that saved her life, but because of the bacterium´s attack and the effects of the medication given to her, great damage was caused to her vascular system and her extremities was hurt due to the lack of blood circulation. A month later the doctors had to amputate her hands and feet due to a necrosis. Her kidneys aren´t functioning correctly and so Sarah is pending for a kidney transplant. She is presently going to dialysis three times a week.

off. Ring overlays are especially good solutions in case of a delicate ring that could get damaged during the resizing process. Resizing a ring is delicate procedure. Here are some situations where ring resizing can become complicated. 1 In case of a channel set or a pave set ring, the gemstones and diamonds can get misaligned during the resizing process.
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO RING RESIZING Casa Gina Offers a Range of Care and Repair Services
T
here are several reasons why you would need to consider resizing of a ring. Either your fiancé bought you one that was too small or too large. Or you lost/gained weight as a result of which it no longer fits you right. Or you just want to wear the ring on different finger rather than the one it was originally sized for. Ring resizing is a procedure that can be done for most types of rings. Many jewellers offer this service through their jewellery stores. Before you dash off to your local jewellery store, there are some important things you should know about ring resizing. Resizing your Ring to make it Larger If your finger size is 6 but the dream ring you just purchased online is a size 5, then you need to have it sized up. There are two ways to resizing a ring to be larger. 1. Adding Extra Metal to the Band A jeweller will add extra metal to enlarge its band. They will need to cut the ring’s shank and add a bridge of gold to make up the larger size. They will pull apart the two sides of the ring, adding a bridge by
72 The Grapevine
soldering the extra metal. 2. Stretching the Ring A jeweller will stretch the existing ring shank. This method consists of stretching its shank by pulling it apart and elongating it. With this method, the slightest mistake can damage your precious ring. Not all rings are suitable for stretching. The upside of this method, is that it can be cheaper than adding extra metal to the ring, so it will save some money. Resizing your Ring to Make it Smaller There is only one method for resizing a ring to make it smaller. The jeweller has to cut off a part of the ring’s shank and then join the two ends by soldering them. Resizing a ring to be smaller can be tricky. Especially if it is an eternity ring or a ring with inset stones or delicate gems. An expert jeweller can help you resize your ring and make it smaller without causing any damage to its structure. Alternatively, if the ring is only a couple of sizes bigger than your actual size, you can try to use ring overlays to prevent it from slipping
2 The prongs of the ring can flare out or get compressed during the resizing process. 3. Delicate gems like opals, pearls, and emeralds, or inlaid stones can all get damaged during soldering process. These stones may even need to be removed during resizing, and then reset correctly afterwards. 4. Engravings on the ring can be damaged during resizing. You may need to have the engravings done again after the resizing process. 5. Very thick or very thin rings can be difficult to size up or size down. 6. In some cases, a ring can need to change more than 4 sizes smaller or larger. It is difficult and expensive to resize rings this dramatically. 7. Rings with shared prongs are also difficult to resize. 8. Don’t be cheap A resized ring should look beautiful when complete. There should be no misalignment in its stones, prongs or the colour of the shank. Select a ring jeweller who will do a marvellous job, no matter if it costs you a little more. Do not compromise on this aspect just to save a few euros. .

OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE, OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEA … Campo cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta
A
s the August heat really starts to suck everything dry, even entrenched campo lovers like me start to long for the seaside – and especially seaside on the cooler and breezier Atlantic coast! And I'm not alone – by a long way! Last year some 89.3 million of us inlanders took a seaside holiday during July and August. 43.6 million in July took to the roads, with another 45.7 million during August. We're exceptionally lucky that Spain has so much wonderful coastline! July and August signifies sea, sand, sun to many of us – with lots of fish and white wine thrown in too!
cope with salt-laden winds and, often, saline soils. But these coastal lovers are also very useful to us in the campo; they usually enjoy the change of scene and, because they are really tough and used to extremely harsh conditions, they make useful additions to our exposed campo gardens. Ocean breezes are often a tonic for our minds, body and soul but often corrosive and damaging for plants so many coastal lovers have long tap roots or very spreading lateral roots to anchor themselves well in loose sand, so they make great erosionproof plantings. Here are some with great seaside names to make them easy to remember - and you don´t need a beach house to enjoy them.
Our plants aren´t as mobile, so they largely made a decision millennia ago whether to become campo dwellers or permanent seadogs. Many of the coastal lovers can be easily identified by their names – the specific epithets maritimum and littoralis are dead give-aways that these guys can
From arenaria, on sand/dunes: Carex arenaria, sand sedge is a native of Atlantic coasts and is commonly seen in Western Iberia. It likes mild coastal winters, some humidity and will tolerate very poor soils. Its creeping stoloniferous roots bind together sand on dunes, one plant often spreading up to 2m

with a height of 0.5m and dense reddish-tinged flower plumes. From argentata, growing on sand: Erigeron argentatus, silver fleabane is a native of Californian beaches and is very similar to the better-known erigeron karvanskianus, or Mexican fleabane. It is a low growing perennial, to approx. 20cm high, forming clumps of basal leaves covered in silvery hairs. The daisy flowers are usually lilac with yellow centres, though can also be seen in pink and white. From littoralis, from the seashore: Hymenocalis littoralis, beach spider lily is an enchanting thing! It's native to coastal areas of South America and likes warmth but we have found it does well here, and romps away in summer heat. The big glossy leaves are strappy and chunky and contrast perfectly with the delicate-looking flowers – pure white with the petals fused together at the base like a funnel and prominent yellow stamens. It grows on semi-shaded, jungle-type beaches – very different to ours – but try it in a pot where you can get up close and personal to those

exotically unusual flowers. From maritima, by the sea: Aremeria maritima, sea thrift or sea pink is a sweet little plant which is very easy and forgiving! A herbaceous perennial reaching around 15cm tall, it develops into cushiony mounds of dark green linear leaves and pink-lilac globular clusters of spring flowers on waving stems. Deadheading will promote sporadic flowering throughout summer and early autumn, though the papery seed heads are also quite attractive. Overwatering can cause browning and rotting in the centre; try it in dry gravelly areas where it should give you years of pleasure. A native of coastal areas through Northern Europe, it even grows happily in Norway and Iceland, so cold is not a problem for this little one. Crambe maritima, sea kale. When you see lovely silver-blue, waxen mounds of foliage on shingle beaches, you know that it's sea kale. In early summer honeyscented bunches of creamy-white flowers appear that are very attractive to bees. Young leaves

and stems can be lightly steamed and eaten. It will be seen growing wild along coastlines of Europe. And if the botanical name doesn´t tell you all about it, then you can almost always depend on common names: Atriplex halimus, Mediterranean saltbush is a local plant. A halophyte, which means it can grow in high salinity areas, it is also very tolerant of high alkaline and nutrient-poor soils, and windy conditions. In fact it's a real little toughie which, with its silvered leaves, can make an attractive low windbreak hedge. Hibiscus tiliaceus Sitriya, sea hibiscus is a little-seen but lovely looking tree with a dense canopy of large heart-shaped leaves, making it a good shade tree. Its flowers are pale yellow with a deep maroon throat, short-lived but prolifically produced. Belonging to the mallow family and hailing from the Pacific Islands, gives an indication of how tough this tree is. It will adapt to a wide range of soils, becomes drought tolerant and is particularly good in seaside positions, coping well with salty
winds. Fast growing to a size of 8m x 8m and hardy to around -4C Limonium latifolium, sea lavender is very tolerant of hot, dry and sunny sites once it is established and, subsequently, dislikes being moved or divided – just leave it to get on with life. It makes mounds of leathery green leaves, approx. 50cm x 50cm, and starry ice-blue flowers which can be cut and dried. The overall effect is billowing and delicate – at odds with its toughness. We're going on our Summer Holidays and the Garden Centre will be closed through August. Hope you all have a great Summer and see you again in September. SUMMER HOLIDAYS!
