Christmas lights are already going up in my village and most restaurants are advertising their Christmas and New year special menus, Some are even fully booked. he was growing up. He admits that he and his brother, who has the same genetic condition, didn't have the same restraining influence that other children did. "Boys will always be boys," he said. "They get into mischief, but we just kind of pushed it to the limit." It meant his early childhood was marked by constant plaster casts and a lot of missed school due to frequent stays in hospital. Now in his thirties and married with children of his own, who did not inherit the condition, Steve is starting to pay the price of his pain-free existence. Spider venom could be used to make pain killers "As children if we were to break a leg we would continue using that leg even though we were in a cast, and by not giving it time to heal it would heal improperly. "And you incur so many injuries as a child that as an adult you start to deal with the repercussions of all those injuries, like having arthritis starting to set into your joints, and mobility issues." Steve is now taking part in a study into his condition, in the hope that a better understanding of his genetic mutation can help those for whom pain is an all too present problem.

Britain's diplomats have been told to learn lessons from the French, if they are to become the best diplomatic service in the world. It follows advice from an external panel of advisers who told the Foreign Office that France was the best at pushing its national interest. Top mandarin Simon Fraser told MPs France was known for supporting its economic and commercial interests. But he said the UK had already made significant progress in this area. Foreign Secretary William Hague has set the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) an objective of becoming the best diplomatic service in the world by 2015. As part of its attempts to achieve this, the FCO has convened an

hat would a world without pain be like? It may sound ideal, but it can cause extreme difficulties. It is the world Steve Pete inhabits. Born in Washington State, USA, with the genetic disorder congenital analgesia, he is incapable of feeling physical pain. If he stubs his toe it doesn't throb, there is no need for anaesthetic when having teeth removed and he has never had a headache in his life. But pain is a vital warning system for our bodies - it tells us when we are doing something harmful and need to stop, and it alerts us that something is wrong and we need to investigate, something Steve has learnt the hard way. Steve's condition first came to light when he was a teething toddler and chewed off part of his tongue without noticing. It was a constant problem when

Richard Loraine-Smith from Pewsey, in Wiltshire, said he was emailed by an address claiming to be firm PayByPhone saying that he owed the council ÂŁ33.30. Westminster's contractor, PayByPhone, said it had been the victim of a phishing scam. FOCUS ON... A MALAGA CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL Verdiales in Malaga

D

ecember 28th, right smack in the middle of the Spanish Christmas season, there are the annual Verdiales competitions which take place taking place right outside Málaga City. The festival brings together competing “pandas” as they are known. These are groups that practice one of three different forms of Verdiales flamenco singing accompanied by their traditional folk dance and costumes. Agility seems to be one top requirement for the couples who provide their performances in leaps and bounds! Verdiales is a form of flamenco that first developed a century ago in the Los Verdiales olive-growing region north of Málaga, near Almogía. It's also one of the earliest forms of fandango, and is still undergoing a process known in Spanish as “ aflamencomiento”, or “flamencoisation”. In other words, this is an original folk song form that has been slowly adopted into the flamenco tradition but still retains its distinctive character. The name comes from a specific type of olive, the “verdial”, grown in the region. The word “verdiales” derives from the Latin for verdant,

14 The Grapevine

or green ("verde" in Spanish) and flourishing. Flamenco scholars describe this type of song as either a "fandango alegre" (happy) or a "malagueño", which is a particular country dance associated with the city and the region. The Verdiales dance is for couples, and involves a lot of leaping. Each song is structured in the form of three "coplas", or verses, in which there are specified dance moves, gestures, and finger clicks. It tends to be performed by more agile dancers, and is quite strenuous. In the hills north of Málaga, there are three types of Verdiales to be seen and heard: Almogía, Montes, and Comares, in a sense these are dialects of the music and dance as they developed in those particular villages and outlying districts. The Almogía version of Verdiales is the most energetic, with the violinist leading the other performers. In the Montes school of Verdiales, the chief instrument is the tambourine. Many of the villages have annual Verdiales festivals, normally in summertime. In Almogía, for example, is at the beginning of August.

FIESTA MAYOR DE VERDIALES

T

he main festival of Verdiales, however, is the Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales, which takes place on December 28 (about 11.00 to 18.00) in Puerto de la Torre (a district of Malaga city) on the A7075 road to Almogía. 25 Pandas (Verdiales Groups) from local villages compete on a stage in the three categories. Almogia, Montes and Comares. Each group of about 20 persons performs 3 routines. The 'Group' features a group dance lead by a young member vigorously swirling the two sided Andalucian and Spanish Flag. The band's conductor swinging a tasselled baton. The 'Pair' features a dancing pairs. The 'Three' features three members in a dance. The judges, by holding up cards, vote for both music & song and dance. The home team "Raices de Malaga" has the most support. The traditional headgear and multi-coloured finery makes this a particularly festive event . This authentic competition, which celebrated its 50th edition in 2012, is sponsored by Malaga Town Hall.

I

n Spain it is a very festive time at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, as the stars come out, tiny oil lamps are lit in every house, and after Midnight Mass and Christmas Dinner, streets fill with dancers and onlookers. There is a special Christmas dance called the Jota and the words and music have been handed down for hundreds of years. They dance to the sound of guitars and castanets. Children think of the Three Wise Man as the gift bearers. Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the date the Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus.

During the weeks before Christmas, families gather around their manger to sing, whilst children play tambourines and dance. The Spanish especially honor the cow at Christmas because it is thought that when Mary gave birth to Jesus the cow in the stable breathed on the Baby Jesus to keep him warm.

Shoes are filled with straw or barley for the tired camels that must carry their riders through the busy night. By morning the camel food is gone and in place of the straw or barley are presents. Shoes also may be placed on balconies on the night of the 6th January in the hope that the Wise Men will fill them with gifts.

Christmas is a deeply religious holiday in Spain. The country's patron saint is the Virgin Mary and the Christmas season officially begins December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is celebrated each year in front of the great Gothic cathedral in Seville with a ceremony called los Seises or the "dance of six." Oddly, the elaborate ritual dance is now performed by not six but ten elaborately costumed boys. It is a series of precise movements and gestures and is said to be quite moving and beautiful.

Most homes have a manger, like cathedrals and churches. These are complete with carved figures.

The children of Spain receive gifts on the feast of the Epiphany. The Magi are particularly revered in Spain. It is believed that they travel through the countryside reenacting their journey to Bethlehem every year at this time. Children leave their shoes on the windowsills and fill them with straw, carrots, and barley or the horses of the Wise Men. Their favorite is Balthazar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts. The Spanish Christmas is Navidad, people go to church, exchange presents, and many play on swing sets set up especially for the occasion. Swinging at solstice time evokes an ancient desire to encourage the sun, urging it to "swing" ever higher in the sky. Like most festivals in Spain, New Year's Eve, known as "Nochevieja" is usually a family affair which takes place at home. Until midnight people tend to stay at home and on the stroke of midnight it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one on each stroke of the clock to bring good luck for the New Year. This tradition began when after a particularly big grape harvest the king of Spain decided to give everybody grapes to eat on New Year's Eve.

WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING Coffee Mornings for MacMillan Cancer Support

I

expect most of you are aware of the wonderful work that MacMillan Cancer Support accomplishes throughout the UK. Each year to assist with their much needed fund raising, they hold the Biggest Coffee Morning in the World when they actively encourage corporate companies, clubs, groups, societies and schools to hold a coffee morning. This event has been running for twenty one years and is something I participated in, during my corporate working life. This year 116,000 separate coffee mornings were registered with MacMillan Cancer Support and I decided to hold one in Competa and split the funds raised between MacMillan and locally, Cudeca, our Spanish Hospice. The date set by MacMillan was Friday, 29th September and I invited as many people as I knew to come along and pay just E4 for delicious homemade cakes and unlimited tea/coffee. So many people kindly volunteered to make cakes that

22 The Grapevine

the choice on the day was amazing, everything – just too many to mention individually but I thoroughly enjoyed the Passion Cake and the Caribbean Fruit Cake!!! Unfortunately the weather on the day was atrocious, torrential rain together with thunder and lightning but despite this over 60 people arrived on the morning at 11am just as Competa village lost its power supply!! Luckily due to the kindness of Axarquia Garden Club lending me their huge water urn, we did have boiling water for tea and coffee. Sadly we couldn’t replenish the urn; none of the power points in our room or surrounding area were working. As always, charity events like this are not possible without my fantastic team of helpers; Elaine Kidd, Liz Bland, Paula Stapley, Penny Sparks and Remy Goeloe. Sadly two of my dear friends, Amanda Attfield and Lynn Gallon were both flooded on that morning and couldn’t as planned, help out

but Jo Robinson and Sue Robinson (no relation) willingly stepped into their shoes and both did an excellent job. Thank you to all of you. Many people who couldn’t venture out of the Campo on that day insisted on making donations and many other friends have stopped me in the street and again generously donated to the causes. A huge thank you to everyone for your support, as together with the Tombola stall and the sale of Maline Webb’s beautiful homemade scarves, we raised E860. At the time of going to press, MacMillan Cancer Support state the day has raised £12,445 million pounds – I’m sure you agree a fantastic achievement for a coffee morning. Cheers 2012! A Year in Bodegas Bentomiz Nearly a decade at Bodega Bentomiz

B

odegas Bentomiz, the small winery just a couple of kilometres above Sayalonga on the Cómpeta road, has been working away nearly a decade quietly turning the local Alejandría de Moscatel grapes – as well as some locally grown red varieties – into exquisite wines. This young business has begun to reap the rewards of more than ten years of investment and hard work, in the middle of a global financial crisis. 2012 has seen their products being recognised and reviewed by famous wine journalists, winning awards at national and international competitions and getting orders and enquiries from around the globe. But how does a family-run enterprise, working closely with a small local team, manage international marketing...and still make the wine? What does it involve? Here is a snap shot of Clara and André´s year.

26 The Grapevine

To advertise call 637 028 873

JANUARY/FEBRUARY: It can be fresh and sunny or cold, cloudy, rainy. The vines must be cropped back until they look like knobbly old pegs marking out the ground. It is hard to imagine their potency as they sleep through the start of the year. The Bodega must produce reports and be ready for inspections by the customs and excise, by the consejo regulador – who manage quality – and by consejo medio ambiente – who look after the environment. Reports, accounts, red tape...an inescapable part of the business. MARCH With interest from as far afield as China and Brazil, Bodegas Bentomiz plan to extend and complete their production and presentation premise. The plans are drawn up: André and his construction team will do the work. Meanwhile Clara travels to Madrid, to Barcelona, to Bilbao, to London, to attend wine fairs, meet distributors and visit sommeliers. In Madrid she receives the Iberwine Excellence Prize awarded to Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso. APRIL/MAY The weather is warming but there are April showers. Everything grows: beautiful new vine leaves...and weeds, weeds, weeds. Clara and André don´t use herbicides on their vineyard so a nice rain shower that loosens the soil for hoeing is “marvellous” (you may not agree). PRESS: Madrid sommelier Alejandro Rodríguez, posts a lovely review of Ariyanas David on Abel Valverde´s blog and Spanish magazine MiVino-Vinum feature Ariyanas Seco. BOTTLING: From April each of last year´s wines will be ready for bottling. The Bodega´s modern

To advertise call 637 028 873

bottling equipment comes into its own as the small team works hard to bottle, label, pack and store some 30,000 bottles. JUNE/JULY Here comes the sun! The rain has stopped (we hope). The vines look wonderful: as the wildflowers and weeds die back they come into their own, their leaves form a green carpet plaited into the hillsides, the baby grapes emerging as knots of tiny green buds. Clara takes a stand at Nariz de Oro wine fair and travels, together with André, through Spain – stopping to deliver wine and have lunch at El Celler de Can Roca - to Holland, visiting distributors and restaurateurs. Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso wins another prize, a gold medal at the Muscats du Monde competition in France. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER Grape harvest! The grapes must be tested for sugar content and harvested as soon as they are ripe. Once harvested some grapes – Moscatel for the Ariyanas whites as well as Merlot, for the Ariyanas David are rested on aerated “floating racks”. When processed every tub of grapes is emptied into the de-stemming machine before pressing (white wines) or transferring straight to the fermentation tanks. Modern wine making brings science to the art – but to get it right involves testing, checking and managing. Bodegas Bentomiz buys grapes from other campesinos, as well as growing its own, so when Clara and André aren´t harvesting, processing or working at the tanks they are visiting other vineyards, to check the grapes there. August is the busiest time of year for a winemaker! OCTOBER The parched land is now waiting

for rain. Very slowly (after an especially hot summer) the heat backs down and the vine leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow. Clara and André are busy with distributors old and new, who help with (and are helped by) the press. The wines get great reviews in German magazines Weinwelt, Vinum and Feinschmecker, ICEX´s Dutch guide to the “100 most beautiful Spanish wines”, the French Tasted Journal and in American wine critic Stephen Tanzer´s guide. Orders come in from Canada, Belgium and the USA. And the Bodega Tours are busier than ever as, with the vendimia nearly completed, the Bodega can offer the ever popular tapas tours again. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER Now the rains arrive: a few days of warm sunshine are followed by clouds lacing the hillsides and rolling up the valley; sometimes there´s a few days of drizzle, sometimes a sudden, dramatic day of downpour. The vines´ leaves, having turned to gold and red are beginning to fall. The year is almost over. The plans hatched in January are nearly complete: the Bodega´s second floor is being turned into offices, professional kitchen and wine presentation room. There are further trips to be made and – of course – another prize to pick up (the Wines from Spain Awards, in London). Next year looks to be another exciting, busy year of expansion and change as eno-tourism brings ever more visitors to the Bodega. And Christmas and New Year is sure to bring visitors keen to enjoy a special glass of wine. So Clara and André would like to propose a toast for 2013: To wine, and success for one and all!

The part-manx was named honorary mayor shortly after his birth, and now locals all know the cat as "Mayor Stubbs." "He was just in the Alaska Magazine, and he's been featured in a few different things," said Lauri Stec, who works at Nagley's General Store in Talkeetna, where Stubbs hangs out most of the time. As the story goes, 15 years ago several of the town residents didn't like the candidates who were running for mayor of Talkeetna, so as a joke, they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs the cat as a write-in candidate, and he actually won. Now, thanks to Stubbs, local tour guides have a little fun with the thousands of tourists who come through the town each summer.

A Bit Bizarre! News facts and theories! Pity Me — feel sorry for those who live there! Pity Me is a village in County Durham in England, although other instances of the name can be found in Hexhamshire and near Morpeth. Pity Me is located north of Framwellgate Moor and west of Newton Hall, and is the home of the Arnison Centre, one of Durham's retail parks. Locals claim the term arose because monks sang the 51st Psalm during their flight from a Viking invasion. The Latin words of the psalm are Miserere mei, Deus, meaning "Pity me, O God" in English. For its part, the Oxford Dictionary of British Place Names speculates that it may simply be "a whimsical name bestowed in the 19th century on a place considered desolate, exposed or difficult to cultivate". However, it probably refers to a Pithead Mere, an extended area of boggy waste ground, onto which the outwash from minehead pumping engines was discharged. An alternative theory suggests, as with some local place names in County Durham, the name derives from Norman-French for 'A Small Lake ’ List of inventors killed by their own inventions. 1.William Bullock, born 1813, died

42 The Grapevine

1867, Bullock had his foot crushed while trying to repair a rotary printing press that he had invented. The resulting infection would later prove fatal. 2. Otto Lilienthal died August 10, 1896 from injuries sustained two days earlier in a crash of one of his hang gliders. 3.Thomas Midgley, Jr. accidentally strangled himself with the cord of a pulley-operated mechanical bed of his own design in 1944. 4. Alexander Bogdanov, a physician and scientist, conducted an experiment for a "rejuvenation" technique wherein he deliberately gave himself a transfusion of blood from a student who suffered from malaria and tuberculosis. He died of the subsequent infections. 5. Franz Reichelt. "The Flying Tailor" jumped off the Eiffel Tower while trying out his combined overcoat/parachute invention. The parachute failed to open and he died from the fall. Cat For Mayor There is a town in Alaska that has had a cat as mayor for 15 years. The cat named Stubbs has been the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska for nearly all of his life -- no joke. It's been that way for more than a decade in the small tourist town that boasts nearly 900 residents.

Concealing shoes in the structure of a building to ward off evil spirits. It’s believed that people as far back as the 14th century thought that concealed shoes would ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. They are often found near chimneys, perhaps because evil spirits would enter through the highest point of the house, as well as near other access points like doors and windows. The shoes are usually well-worn, and are more likely to have belonged to children or women than men. The earliest known concealed shoe was discovered behind the choirstalls in Winchester Cathedral, which were installed in 1308. Concealed shoes have been discovered in many European countries, as well as in North America, Australia, and perhaps even China. An analysis of the Concealed Shoe Index maintained by Northampton Museum, conducted by June Swann and published in 1996, reveals that the most common place of concealment is the chimney, fireplace or hearth (26.2%), followed by under the floor or above the ceiling (22.9%), and almost as many concealed in the roof.

The Twelve Days of Citrus! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

C

itrus are so beautiful with their deep green glossy evergreen leaves, white waxy scented flowers and glowing edible fruits; they make perfect and very special Christmas gifts. A gift that is going to last for years, be handsome and useful too – it’s got to be better than a pair of smelly socks! So here are twelve of the best for you to choose from: 1. Sweet Orange: The classic and, perhaps, the most versatile. There are many good varieties, but some of the best are Washington,

Valencia Late, Newhall, Navel and Salustiana. 2. Lemon: Look for the ‘gin and tonic’ lemon to get your Christmas off to a good start. Instead of producing one large crop of lemons, the flowering and fruiting is spread almost throughout the year. It’s more correctly known as a lunar type and look for varieties Eureka and Verna. 3. Mandarin: Encompasses tangerines/clementines and satsumas. These were first they

introduced into Western markets around the beginnings of the 1800’s and were then known as the ‘kid-glove orange’ because of their often baggy and easy-peel skin. Consumer acceptance has been rapid and they are now one of our most popular citrus fruits. Good clementines are Clemenules and Dancy; and for satsumas go for Hashimoto or Clausellina. 4. Grapefruit: Pink grapefruits are stealing the market of the yellow ones. Slightly sweeter and, arguably, prettier than the yellow

varieties, try Ruby Red and, if you can find it, Burgundy with an intensely coloured skin. Juicy and sweeter than most, it is not such a prolific cropper and, therefore, not used commercially. Good yellow skins are Duncan or Marsh.

this one will cause a stir with your G&T or try serving it with fish and seafood. It’s as easy to grow as a yellow lemon but much more attractive.

Wishing you a wonderful Christmastim e from all at Viveros Florena.

5. Lime: A small-sized tree and disliking cold winds, the lime is ideal for pot work. The fruits are expensive to buy, so growing your own is a great idea. Bearss is the variety that you’ll commonly find.

We will be closed 25th and 26th December 2012 and 1st January 2013.

6. Bitter orange: also known as the buddhas hand Seville orange, because so many are 10. Kaffir lime: The entire plant is produced in that area. This is the highly aromatic and the leaves, as best for marmalade and a tough well as the fruit, are used in and tolerant tree which makes an Indonesian cooking. The fruits are elegant addition to street side very bumpy and lumpy but with a plantings. Sevillano is the variety great flavour. Grow as a smooth you’ll easily find. lime. 7. Kumquat: The little ‘sweet and sour fruit’ – a perfect snack food full of vitamins – and the hardiest of the citrus. Staying quite small, it is ideal for pots and is immensely decorative. Nagami and Marumi are two of the best. Try limequats too; Eustis is a good one. 8. Calamondin: Very ornamental with flowering and fruiting throughout the year makes the calamondin very popular for pots. The fruits are very sour and used more in pickles and chutneys or bottled. The variegated Peter is extremely decorative. 9. Red lemon: A lemon with a difference! With a red deeplydimpled skin and pink tinted flesh

pulp, being entirely composed of skin and pith. It is used in stir fry dishes in the Far East and is a part of every Christmas cake and Christmas pud in the form of dried cut peel.

11. Bergamot orange: The bergamot is a hybrid, believed to be a cross between a bitter orange and a lemon. It is principally grown for its essential oils which are used in many perfumes and in the cosmetic trade in general. It is also used in Earl Grey tea and some tobaccos. Its high pectin levels are useful in many preserves whilst the juice is used to flavour citrus drinks and cakes and sweets. The tree, liking a warm and sheltered position, is the most aromatic of all the citrus family. 12. Buddha’s hand: Definitely wins the prize for the Christmas scary monster with its finger like appendages. The fruit bears no

Palm Island Resort - Dubai

TOP WINTER SUN DESTINATIONS Fancy a change of scenery this winter?

Budget Canary Islands:. Tenerife is the largest of the islands, and it has the most facilities, in contrast to tiny El Hierro and La Gomera, where tourism has had less of an impact. Gran Canaria has the best beaches, while Lanzarote is volcanic, so parts of the island are covered in lava and ashes, and many of the beaches have black sand. Weather: Expect winter

temperatures of mid-20sC. Rain is rare Beware: The mega-resorts (for example, Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria) with their cavorting hordes Also try: Goa, Tunisia, Cyprus Family Florida: Once you get there the kids will eat the food, speak the language and enjoy the beach

with its huge sandy beaches and warm water. Hire a car and visit the Seaquarium to meet sea lions, dolphins, manatees and even a killer whale. It's also a good idea to make time for the Science Museum, Planetarium, kayaking through the Everglades and the mother of all Florida attractions: the Orlando theme parks. Weather: Temperatures average

16C-30C December to May Beware: A car is essential Also try: Canaries, Balearics Glamour Dubai: Expect to rub shoulders with the stars at beach resorts in this city, which has been dubbed the Hong Kong of the Gulf. David Beckham and Michael Owen are among those who are said to have bought property here, and the glittering hotels on Jumeira beach are testament to the rich clientele this spot attracts. The Burj al Arab hotel has got to be seen: it's the world's only sevenstar hotel, plus take a walk through the souks to check out the Persian carpets and gawp at the gold on sale. Weather: Between 20C and 25C, though it can be windy in winter Beware: Overdoing it on your credit card Also try: Barbados, St Maarten Culture Egypt: Treasure house of the ancient world. Visit Karnak and Luxor in the winter months and enjoy almost guaranteed sunshine, without the searing heat of midsummer. History buffs will love the temples, tombs and pyramids, while sun seekers can soak up the rays from aboard a Nile cruise ship. Weather: Southern Egypt basks in mid-20sC during the winter months Beware: Relentless touts can test your sense of humour Also try: Jordan Romance Maldives: The stuff that dreams are made of: coral-fringed islets, white sand and warm seas. No one can fail to be seduced by this cluster of tropical islands in the heart of the Indian Ocean. The smaller resorts tend to be quieter and therefore more appealing to couples and honeymooners. Choose a fullboard option - the islands are so

to eat, anyway. Weather: Temperatures sit at 28C plus throughout the winter Beware: Boredom. There is, literally, nothing to do apart from read, swim and gaze into the eyes of the one you love Also try: The Seychelles, Mauritius City break Marrakech: This medieval walled city in Southern Morocco has barely changed over the centuries, with its narrow alleyways and merchants trading from tiny stalls. Make way for the donkeys hauling great loads through the crowded streets, and don't worry about getting lost - a helpful passer-by will be happy to point you in the right direction. Sip mint tea in one of the cafĂŠs overlooking the bustling Djeema el-Fna market square, where snake charmers, food vendors and freelance dentists rub shoulders with magicians, musicians and storytellers. Weather: Take a jacket, as winter sunshine can still feel a little chilly. Winter temperatures range from 15C to 26C Beware: Spur of the moment purchases. You may find yourself trying to stuff carpets, pottery, metalwork and leather goods into that suitcase for the journey home. Also try: Seville, Granada Party Rio de Janeiro: The city of samba, where life revolves around dance, drink, beach and sun. For 24-hour party people, February's Mardi Gras carnival is a must. But there's no such thing as a quiet night in Rio, so winter revellers at any time can be sure to catch a vibe. Ride the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, then work on your tan on Copacabana beach. Weather: December to March temperatures range from 25C to 40C Beware: High crime rate, so take

care and stay safe Also try: Canaries, Cuba Adventure Safari: What could be more exciting than sleeping under canvas as lions prowl around your tent? Or coming within feets of an elephant as it plods through the bush? Going on safari is the ultimate adventure holiday, and Europe's winter months are the best time for game viewing, so taking a trip on the wild side is the ultimate winter getaway. Tanzania is a good choice - there's snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro, the plains of the Serengeti, the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, Great Rift Valley and Zanzibar. Intrepid travellers will choose a couple of camps and make the transfer by light aircraft for the best views. (Get more information on safaris) Weather: Mid-20sC in the Serengeti, hotter at the coast Beware: Early starts - 6am is normal - to catch the best animals Also try: sailing in the West Indies, diving in the Red Sea Longhaul Australia: It's a long way to go, but worth it if you've got itchy feet for a big winter holiday. Make it a multi-centre trip and travel from Melbourne up the east coast via Sydney, Brisbane and the Whitsunday Islands to the tropical rainforests of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. Guaranteed sunshine, as our winter is their summer, but remember to slap on the UV protection - those rays are mighty fierce down in the southern hemisphere. Weather: Gets hotter as you head north to Cairns, with mid20sC in Melbourne and Sydney Beware: Creepy crawlies. Australia is home to some of the world's deadliest bugs Also try: Fiji, Far East source: pintprice.com

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

DESIGNED BY COMPUTERS, BUILT BY ROBOTS, DRIVEN BY ME! Andy Wilkes and his cars.

I

t is not hard to see the beginning of my love affair with cars; when I was about 7 my dad took me to see the Motor Show at Earl's Court. A few days before I queuing up to read to my headmistress at school; I was nervous as Mrs Maunder had a reputation for being very strict . It was not the reading I was worried about; it was telling her that I was taking the day off to attend the show in London. Thankfully she beamed and said “lucky you”. Actually I don't think children are allowed to take time off for recreational purposes now but back then we were. It was not all plain sailing though; we had to drink warm bottles of creamy milk at break time and to this day I cannot drink milk without feeling nauseas. Anyway, the day before my trip to the Motor Show I saw in the newspaper photos of bikini-clad models draped across the cars and to be honest was looking forward to seeing them more than the motors. Upon arrival I was disappointed to see that there

60 The Grapevine

were no models (I later found out that was just on press day) but still had a good time with my dad, the highlight being when he lifted me up onto a podium and sat me in a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. It was short-lived as the security guards ran over to us and barked at my dad to get me out of the car. Not really that surprising when you consider that Mercedes built 3,258 of those cars between 1954 and 1963 and that they now sell for between 550,000 and 800,000 € Despite being a car enthusiast I would not say I was a natural driver – I passed my driving test at the 5th attempt and wrote off my first driving instructor's car during one particularly bad lesson. He said it was his fault as he had dual controls and should have stopped. I appreciated his honesty and forgave him. I think the reason I failed 4 times was because my boss told me that he would give me a company car as soon as I passed my driving test so the pressure was on. Eventually I changed instructors and passed first time with him.

Amongst my favourite cars that I have owned is the cheapest car I ever bought which was a 1977 Renault 5 TS. It was held together by tape and body filler, started when it wanted to and vibrated violently once you reached 60 mph. It was the best £65 I had ever spent and despite its foibles it had character (and a funny smell in the boot). But later on when I had a proper job I did manage to have some nice cars; I remember driving through a town centre in my Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor with the roof down and a pedestrian shouting “you flash b*stard” I am not sure if it was supposed to be an insult, but quite frankly it made my day. When I got that car I promised my wife Debbie that I would clean it every week and not let the inside of it resemble a mobile skip. I think the only time it ever got washed was when it was serviced and when it rained. But that is what happens to people that love cars; you covet one, test drive one, and then the nasty car making people bring out a new one with 5 extra horse power. OK it looks the same but deep down

To advertise call 637 028 873

you know that the drivers of the new model will know their car is faster than yours. Something similar happened to me. I chose a Peugeot 406 coupe as my next company car. It came in 2 models; the 2 litre and the 3 litre. My car allowance would not stretch to the 3 litre so I had to have a 2 litre. Most people liked it but every now and then a 3 litre went past and the driver always had a smug grin on his face. I once saw a documentary about company car drivers; one man interviewed said that when he was on the motorway and a car that was the same range as his came up behind him he could tell instantly by looking at the wing mirrors whether the car was a better or inferior model to his. If the car was better, he pulled over and let it overtake him. But if it was an inferior model he said that there was no way he would let it go past. It sounds sad but I have seen many a disgruntled employee on the verge of leaving

because their peers had a wooden gear knob in their cars. Driving a company car is not like driving your own car and new tyres and brake pads were due at every service. This was mainly due to doing 30,000 miles a year as a field service engineer but mainly due to the fact that the cars we had at the time – 1.3 Vauxhall Astras were driven round at top speed whenever we could. During the first week in my new job with my first company car I had to drive to London with some colleagues, so one car and three vans in convoy. The lead engineer said “OK, when we drive in London there are 2 rules. 1, we leave at 5 am to beat the traffic and 2, we never, ever let anybody pull out when in traffic” Of course being quite young and keen to impress I did not, but it was not easy when you are stationary and the driving trying to pull out of a junction is staring at you almost pleading to be let out, but rules are rules!

After our houses, a car is probably the second most expensive thing we ever buy. The advertising people would have us believe that the car we drive reflects our personality when actually it comes down to requirement and budget. Those 2 factors are why I am now the proud owner a Nissan van. I need a van for collecting and delivering items for my shop and the Nissan was the best van I could afford. I must say having a van has been a revelation. It is practical (no more speeding for me) and it doubles as a free hotel (my wife and I have spent a few nights sleeping in the back). So if I had to choose between a Mercedes Gullwing and a van there would be no debate; give me the Merc, the van's not that great. Andy Wilkes

that he has no idea when my delivery will arrive. The 40ft container will leave Morocco only when it is full and will arrive, inshallah, God and customs officers willing about 3 days later. However it's not in his culture to disappoint. I in turn shouldn't ask. I know that the lorry will leave Morocco when there are enough orders to fill it and that there is nothing that either Jamal or I can do about it, other than buy more. However it's not in my culture to wait or to be vague.

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER Is it best to be honest or not ? - Debbie Wilkes

“When will my order will arrive?” I ask my Moroccan wholesaler Jamal. “In 10 days” he replies, I don't know why I ask, it's always 10 days. “10 days from to today?” I try to clarify he just shrugs. When I phone him in a weeks' time to chase the order, he will tell me again that it will arrive in 10 days. It is my understanding that there are two words based in Islamic tradition that cover this.

66 The Grapevine

I'm not an expert on this, so please don't e-mail me, but the way my Palestinian friend explained it to me is that, Taqiyya is saying something that isn't true and Kitman is lying by omission and neither one is actually lying. They are considered as preserving honour and not causing disappointment. So I ask a question and Jamal tells me what he thinks I want to hear and we're both happy; or not. Of course what he should tell me is

At least in Arabic there are two such descriptive words. In India there is the coverall head wobble. This particular headshake can be acknowledgement or encouragement. In the Western world, people often use a nod for the same purpose. However it is mostly used when the person doesn't want to say no. I am not sure if there is a word for “no” in Hindi, if there is it must be fairly superfluous. I once spent 7 hours on a train with 2 delightful extended Indian families. I shared stories and packed lunches from tiffin tins, with grannies, aunties, mums and dads and kids of all ages for 7 hours. 7 hours going in the wrong direction. Those charming people were far too nice to tell me that I was on the wrong train. Every time I asked what time the train would arrive in Jaipur I got the head wobble. “It's about 7 hours yes?” head wobble “have another samosa” So we will arrive about 6.30 right?” more head wobbles and another layer of spicy treats. When the train pulled into Delhi I was horrified whilst the rest of the carriage was beaming and head wobbling enthusiastically. We had survived 7 hours without anyone having to tell me that I had made a mistake, my honour was intact. An overnight stay, and 7 hours in the correct direction, a full 24 hours later and several dollars lighter I arrived in Jaipur but at least I did so with honour.

The Sarisika Tiger Reserve is a great example of not wanting to burden people with the disappointment of the truth. In 2004 it was revealed that there hadn't been any tigers in the reserve for years, no one had felt the need to bother the tourists with this little fact. When we arrived in a village on the edge of the reserve in the mid-90s ready to see the (probably non-existent) tigers, we spotted a hostel type place, plonked ourselves at one of the many picnic tables in the yard and ordered beers. The proprietor gave us a head wobble and disappeared and was gone for ages; he re-appeared some time later with warm beers and then sat down at the table with us. Several hours and several beers later when we tried to pay the bill we discovered that there, was no bill, it wasn't a hostel, we had just sat down in this poor man's garden and demanded beer, and then whinged a bit when it was tardy and warm. He hadn't wanted to embarrass us with the truth but eventually had to 'fess up with lots of head wobbling, when we asked to see the bedrooms. It turned out that there were no hostels in the village and whilst sitting around drinking beer we'd missed the daily bus. They very kindly let us sleep on the village badminton court and in spite of the proximity to the reserve and the badminton courts glassless windows we didn't get eaten by tigers! Cultural differences can puzzle us in the most mundane of situations. I still find my Spanish neighbours addressing each other as Rubia, Negra, or heaven forbid Cuña, quite shocking. And the demand to a waiter of “Give me a drink” continues to make me cringe. Whereas a local bar owner said to me “Why do the Brits ask me - is it possible to have a beer please? Of course it's possible to have a beer we're a bar”. “We call you the Por Favores” he went on to tell me

To advertise call 637 028 873

“every sentence ends in please, it's very confusing”. So if we can't say hello or order a drink without confusion, I suppose it's not surprising that the concept of honesty offers such cultural chasms. It may shock some of my fellow Por Favores to learn that we are not perceived to be as honest (bankers excluded) as we would like to think we are. I mean we invented cricket. I am sure someone is going to tell me that we actually didn't invent cricket, but it's the principal that counts, we believe that we invented cricket and cricket is the epitome of honesty!!! A fellow Scandinavian traveller asked me “Why do the Brits always lie” Lie? Us?? The question arose following an exchange earlier in the day. We had been travelling in Guatemala and the following day had arranged quite a challenging trek up a volcano. Ricky a very overweight American that had spent the last few days poking round the cultural sights of the city with us asked us ”what's the plan for tomorrow?” I spluttered a bit and said “we're climbing Volcan Pacaya, we didn't think you'd want to come”. “You're too fat” chipped in my Scandi pal. “So why did you lie?” She asked me later. “I wasn't lying” I replied “I was being kind, thoughtful and considerate and I didn't want to hurt his feelings”. ”No” she said “you were lying, you Brit's do it all the time. You know he's fat, he knows he is fat. He's fat, not stupid you're being condescending”. “No, I'm being polite” I maintained. We still couldn't agree on the matter by the time her friend joined us. Who proceeded to tell her “you shouldn't wear that tee shirt it makes your titties look flat”. They proceeded to embark on an upfront and honest critique of each other's wardrobes. I scuttled away red faced and head down & found something very important to do elsewhere.

So now that we're onto the subject of wardrobes we get to one of the trickiest truths of all. That question that at some time is asked of all husbands and seems to cross all cultures. It is the often posed, the awful the really unfair “Does my bum look big in this?” Since opening the Boutique at Sugar and Spice, we've obviously heard this question asked more than a few times. It's guaranteed to send my husband Andy heading for a convenient storeroom faster than Usain Bolt. Can you wrap that for me? also has him running but nowhere near as fast. So often when asked “Do you like it? Does it suit me? What do you think?” husbands answers with “yeah it's alright” Alright?? Let me tell you chaps “alright” is never the look we're going for. We're going for glorious, gorgeous, great, even nice is better than alright. So what do you say when it doesn't look alright? The answer to your wife, to the does my bum look big question is never yes, never ever, not from you, that's what her friends are there for. I would like to suggest the answer from you, the person who promised to love her for better or for worse, the person who thinks she looks beautiful always, should be something along the lines of “I've seen things that suit you more, or “it doesn't flatter you”. The fault is with the garment, not with your wife's lovely bottom. You could of course go for a more direct approach but I wouldn't recommend it. When my friend Helen dragged her husband into a changing room and asked “do these trousers make me look fat?” He replied “No Helen, it's all the crisps and chocolate that make you look fat”. Sorry let me rephrase that. When my friend Helen dragged her now EXhusband into the changing room… source: pintprice.com

Smoked Salmon Pinwheels 300g cream cheese 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp chopped dill generous pinch of black pepper 4 large flour tortillas 350g smoked salmon Mix the cream cheese with the lemon juice, chopped dill and plenty of black pepper.

CHRISTMAS STARTERS Recipes by Andy Wilkes, Sugar and Spice and www.ingredient.es Brie and Cranberry Parcels

Creamy Tomato Vol-au-vents

1 sheet of filo pastry (per 6 parcels) 6 tsp cranberry sauce 6 chunks of Brie cheese approx 3 x 3 cm Melted butter

8 pre-cooked vol-au-vent cases 2 shallots, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 25g butter About 36 cherry tomatoes, halved 6 tbsp crème fraiche 1 tbsp dried marjoram Salt and freshly ground black pepper 75g of grated cheese

Cut the filo pastry into 3 pieces and then crossways to make 6 equal rectangles. Put a piece of Brie and a teaspoon of cranberry sauce approximately 1.5 cm from the end of a piece of pastry. Fold over the short end to cover the filling. Fold the sides of the pastry to make a thinner rectangle and the fold the filled end down the length of the pastry.

Gently fry the shallots and garlic in butter until soft. Add the tomatoes and crème frâiche and cook for 3 minutes. Sstir in the marjoram and season to taste. Preheat a moderate grill.

Once you reach the other end fold the 2 corners to make a point and then fold the point to seal the parcel. For more information see http://www.jusrol.co.uk/TechniqueDetail .aspx?TechniqueId=61

Divide the filling mixture between the vol-au-vent cases, piling it into the centres. Sprinkle with grated cheese and place under the grill for 3 minutes.

Spread over 4 large flour tortillas and cover with the smoked salmon. Roll up like a Swiss roll, trim off the ends and discard. Wrap tightly in cling film, twisting the ends firmly to enclose. Place in the fridge until you are ready to use. To serve, take a sharp knife and slice into wedges. Asparagus Wrapped in Serrano Ham 2 bunches asparagus, ends trimmed 8 slices Serrano ham 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar Preheat oven to 180ºC/gas mark 4. Use a sharp knife to cut the Serrano lengthways into long, thin strips. Wrap a piece of ham around each asparagus spear, creating a long, spiral effect. Place each spear on a paper-lined baking tray, drizzle with oil and balsamic and season with sea salt and pepper. Bake for 5 minutes then serve immediately.

Brush the finished parcel with butter and bake at 190ºC for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

they walked past. "Mmmm, I love a man with power..." Purred my date, "especially the captain of a team." "I'm not the captain" I explained, "I've just got a really gay run.”

I saw a homeless man sleeping inside a big cardboard box outside the train station this morning.

It's a big one! “Go and have a look at the size of the poo I've just done in the bathroom!" I said to my wife. "No thanks," she replied. "Please, just one quick look," I said, "You won't believe it." She pinched her nose, ran in, looked down the toilet, then ran out and said, "There's nothing down there, you must've flushed it." I said, "It's on the scales."

“Our family surname is "Daniels". So rather hilariously we named our first child Jack. She hates it.

Sudoko Answers from Page 74

My wife said she'd switch everything off before we went on holiday, as I couldn't be trusted to make a proper job of it. Well just before we left I did a double-check. It's a good job I did, she'd forgotten to switch off the fridge and the aquarium.

Not wanting to disturb him, I crept over and put a Starbucks coffee cup on top of his box. He immediately woke up and said, "Thank you." "No problem." I smiled. He looked at me again and said, "It's empty." I said, "I know, it's meant to be a chimney.

Me and my wife split up because we wanted different things from the relationship. She wanted love and commitment, and I wanted her sister.

"What the hell is going on here?!" I shouted as I walked into my sons bedroom. "Look at the state of it!"

I was out on a first date when I saw a couple of lads from my football team: “Alright skipper?" they said, as

"Oh come on dad." he replied, "She's not that bad."

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA

‘ONE VOICE’ AT CHRISTMAS One Voice will be singing seasonal music again this year, but on three very different occasions. Each will be a celebration of Christmas, and an opportunity for the different nationalities represented here in Cómpeta to come together, but each event will have its own distinct flavour. Wednesday December 19th A service of 9 lessons and carols in Competa Church (Time to be announced) This service was a great success last year and it is to be repeated this year. The service will include carols and readings in both Spanish and English, with a Spanish choir leading the Spanish carols. ‘One Voice’ leading those in English. It will be a service that will hopefully bring together the Spanish and ex-patriot communities, both Roman Catholic and non Catholic, Everyone is welcome.

Thursday December 20th A festive musical evening and singalong at the Alberdini Rural Hotel from 8pm This evening will be a mixture of ‘One Voice’ singing their own choice of Christmas music interspersed with traditional carols and songs for all, led by Geoff Murrell. Join us for a cup of festive cheer and a chance to give your vocal chords an airing!

Saturday December 22nd (Please note the change of date.) A concert in Competa Church at 8pm, after Mass. ‘One Voice’ will be presenting some well-known pieces as well as some festive offerings that may be less familiar. CORO ROCIERO “ALMIJARA” de CÔMPETA, led by our Mayor, José Louis will also be performing in their wonderful, distinctive style. If you have not heard them before, you have missed a treat. Everyone is cordially invited to come along for a great musical feast. ‘One Voice’ would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers of The Grapevine a truly wonderful Festive Season. This month, Velez-Malaga Town Council will vote on a law which plans to stop people going without their shirts in

the street. It will also ban riding horses in the street unless it is a local festivity. Not wearing a shirt in public will be fined with between €50 and €100, although it will be allowed on the seafront promenade and beaches. Fines for riding or exhibiting horses or other load-bearing animals in the streets will amount to as much as €1,500. The law also refers to graffiti, posters, billboards, alcohol sales and consumption, camping in public areas and swimming in public fountains. The aim is to prevent vandalism and uncivil behaviour, and fines can be substituted by community work.

Local self-taught artist Margaret Riordan has two art exhibitions currently running until Spring 2013. One in café bar Sands and Co near the lighthouse on Torrox Costa, open 12noon every day apart from Thursdays, and another at Bar Choto Playa at Peñoncillo, Torrox Costa, every day except Tuesdays.
