Editors Note..... Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2011. I love Christmas, whether it is here in Spain or in the UK. I love the fairy lights, winter evenings with the fire, watching great children’s films on the TV and eating more chocolate!

The magazine this month is packed full of ideas of where to go for Christmas Lunch and New Years Eve and also for general entertainment throughout December. If you plan to stay in over the festive season remember to order your turkey and boxes of Quality Street in advance as the English shops do sell out fast. This year I will be taking some time off over the Christmas period and I won’t be cooking the Christmas lunch. I leave that to my mother in law much to the relief of the rest of the family! I usually take this time to express a few thank you’s and this year is no different. Each month we have regular contributions to the magazine from Andy Wilkes, Alick Howard, Lorraine Cavanagh and Rose Jones. They have even built up a little fan base and I often receive emails commenting on their articles. So a big thanks goes to them and their efforts and I am looking forward to reading their articles in 2011

Quick Fire Questions to Nerja Sofas! How is your hunt for a new shop going? Not very good we can't get a large enough place at the right price but in some ways it has worked out well for us as our new website www.nerjasofas.es is working really well. We have been able to reduce our prices by 30% as we don't have the huge overheads of a shop.

I hear you are going to bring over cheap self assembly kitchens from the UK? Yes that's right we are bringing in a range with built up carcasses at really competitive prices. It's no good complaining how bad things are in Spain you have to adjust your business accordingly.

Are you still going back to the UK? Yes we are going back every 2/3 weeks. The demand for ex-pats moving back to the UK is still very strong.

How big a range of furniture do you do now you don't have a shop? We have increased the number of products to over 1500 and with the new products we will soon be up to 2000

Are there many ex-pats moving to Spain? A few. We are being asked to bring back electrical goods such as TV,s , ovens, American fridge freezers as the prices in the UK are so much cheaper

Do you still let your customers pay in sterling? Yes we let our customers pay at the daily bank exchange rate. I would rather give our customers the benefit of a lower exchange rate than boost the bank's profits

The Fountain of Youth I

have a puzzle for you. This is no trick; it is not something I know the answer to – I am entirely puzzled myself. It's the Case of the Unchanged Tadpoles. As you know, frogs lay eggs in early spring. After about a week tiny tadpoles hatch out. After about two months the ones the big tadpoles who haven't been eaten grow little back legs, then front legs, then lose their tail, and turn into tiny frogs. That's the natural order of things. And in 2009 in an open water tank in the natural park beside the track to Puerto Blanquillo this started to happen and then, just before metamorphosis, stopped.

It was a friend who showed me them in spring 2010 and claimed they were a year old already. There was a tiny scum of green lichen on the stone walls. There were big tadpoles and little tadpoles and all seemed well and reasonably lively. The water overflowed from the tank out into a stream bed and there were tadpoles there too. A big chip in the stone edging on one side would provide the perfect platform for a young frog to hop onto. I wondered whether my friend could somehow have been mistaken, but over the next few months I saw the same strange thing: the pond weed grew and other water creatures came and went, but the tadpoles stayed unchanged. In September when I walked by the river near Árchez I saw dozens of tiny frogs – but none in fountain of youth! I headed for my computer. Lacking the qualification of patience I am not a great internet researcher. Sites with names like 'whyzz' or 'pondfun' taught me that 'tadpole development' was a bit too general! I found from “A tribute to the Tadpole” that unseasonal cold can put metamorphosis on hold for months. But that hardly applied to the deposito, which had been out in the full sun through July and August! I went for a more sophisticated phrase and got: Arrested development in Xenopus Laevis Tadpoles jeb.biologists.org/cgi” This looked a bit more serious. The gist of this research paper abstract (a bit of a step up from 'how taddies become froggies') was that tadpoles with thyroid problems turn not frogs but into giant tadpoles. This seemed to be confirmed by:

20

The Grapevine

Giantism in Tadpoles of the Negene frog Paleobatrachus, Paleobiol.geoscienceworld.org and Digestive Plasticity in Tadpoles of the Chilean Giant Frog, captura.uchile.cl Slightly scary as these very serious sites are I tried to battle through to find an answer for the case here. But it still doesn't fit: most of the tadpoles in the deposito were big, but not all. None were giants. A last desperate attempt confirmed that a few frog species (and there are thousands) can take a couple of years to grow up. But the only specific example mentioned was the Bullfrog. Why on earth would there be American Bullfrogs in this one pool? Is that what these tadpoles actually are? I might find out this spring, when it will have been two years since these tadpoles' eggs were laid. Either that or the Fountain of Youth is at the top of the Sayalonga valley. Before you drink, please filter, to avoid swallowing pond weed, water beetles, water boatman…or the occasional tadpole! Rose Jones

Christmas Holidays

C

hristmas is upon us, and everybody is preparing for their holidays. If you´re thinking of going away and your animals are not going with you, you need to prepare everything in advance. The kennels are often full over Christmas, so you need to book as early as possible to make sure they can take your pet. If it is the first time your dog or cat goes into kennels, it is a good idea to have a look around to make sure the place is to your liking. The owners should let you in to see the cages, then you can make sure for yourself everything is clean and apt for animals. Depending on how long you are going to be away, and how many animals you have got, you may opt for having somebody coming to your house to look after your animals, it can be a very good idea, especially for cats as it will reduce the stress, and lessen the risk of catching an infection. Dogs going into kennels need to be vaccinated against kennel cough as it is a very infectious disease, and once they´ve got it, it can take up to 6 weeks to get rid of. Remember not to vaccinate

The Grapevine

last minute, as the body needs some time to produce the antibodies; the ideal is at least two weeks before. Another thing to take into account is if the animal is used to be away from you, I always advise owners to make sure the animals can be on their own. If you for example have a business at home, or you are retired and spend most of the time at home, the dog will get extremely upset and anxious if you suddenly disappear for days, say, for a routine operation or a needed mini break. Therefore, it is a good idea to leave the dog at home by itself once in a while and not take it with you everywhere. It is also important, when you get home again even if you only been away for minutes, not to make a fuss of your dog, the best thing is to ignore him for a couple of minutes until he has calmed down. If you make a big deal out of leaving and coming back, he will as well! We wish you all, four – and two legged ones, a Happy Holiday. Gunila- Naturvets

Have a Sugar & Spicy Christmas

I

have always loved Christmas. It is magical; the smells, the glitzy baubles, the anticipation, the carol singers with lanterns on long sticks. No, this isn't a Dickens novel, I grew up in middle England we really did have carol singers with lanterns on long sticks, although I suspect there is some health and safety law forbidding them now. I love being with family and laughing at things that only you laugh at. I can sing my way through every Christmas song known to man (well prenineties anyway). When my Mum died 3 years ago for me Christmas lost some of its sparkle and I realised that she really was what made so much of it magic. As I get older I realise that I am, as prophesied, turning more and more into my Mum, and in that spirit I am determined this year to re-claim the spirit of Christmas and recreate the magic. My birthday is at the beginning of December and Christmas in our house always starts then. We celebrate my birthday, and then just keep right on celebrating all the way to New Year. Sugar & Spice was also opened in the first week of December 2005 and this year we will be celebrating our 6th Christmas. It's all kicking off on Saturday 4th of December when Santa will be paying us his annual visit, distributing free gifts for all those well behaved children. This year we are also hosting a special post-box to make sure that he gets all of those important Christmas lists posthaste. Santa will then read all of his mail and write a reply which can be collected from the shop.

30

The Grapevine

It's not all about the kids. In the spirit of Christmas and to celebrate the shops 5th anniversary the green tights are coming out again. So come and see probably the world's tallest elf who will be handing out mince pies, beer & wine. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without turkey, and we were so pleased with the positive response we received from customers that purchased one of our free-range turkeys from Seville last year that we will be providing everyone with the chance to sample some. A number of people said it was the best turkey that they had ever eaten, so why not come and give it the taste test yourself? This year with the help of some friends we have re-designed our giftware area to create a larger, brighter space. Already we have had some wonderful comments with people describing it as “magical” “like a fairy grotto” and “friendly & inviting”. It is bursting at the seams with wonderful goodies personally chosen from a range of different suppliers and has many inexpensive stocking fillers and gifts. So pay us a visit throughout December and share the Christmas magic. Oh and if you see Andy could you remind him that my birthday is in the first week of December (the 6th actually) that would be great and I might actually get a present this year!

After an offer has been accepted on a property which is furnished or partly furnished the agent will make an inventory of the furniture. If you have time it is a good idea to go with the agent when this is being done as it will make it clearer to you exactly what is remaining in each room. Competa Properties • 952 516 107 Use a reputable Estate Agent generally one that has been operating for a good number of years and is known by the local lawyers. Use a local lawyer who knows the area, to check out the paperwork before putting down a non returnable deposit and signing a contract Axarquia Properties • 626 038 851 The first and most important stage is to pinpoint your ideal area. North or south? inland or coast? countryside or village? The more research you do, the more likely you are to choose the right area for you. Use the internet, read magazines and books, talk to people who already own property here. Sunset Properties • 952 516 373 It is essential to use an estate agent you can trust who speaks English and Spanish, who is established in the area and has good relationships with the local authorities and craftsmen. One important aspect of purchasing property in Spain is the importance of having a Spanish will. It is essential for your loved ones that a will exists otherwise, in the event of untimely demise, property will go into probate which could take years to sort out. We unfortunately have known of some owners who have not received this fundamental advice. Fleming Properties • 952 547 131

Sunset Properties • 952 516 373 We all know how important it is to ensure that the paperwork is correct for the house of your choice. Equally important is the “catastro” the overall register of all land and real estate in Spain. The information held in the “catastro” is often inaccurate. Is your property entered correctly on the “catastro”? The two documents must match if you wish to sell or have peace of mind that your documents are correct.

Buying a Property in Spain Choosing the right area The first stage of the process is to pinpoint the area that is right for you. The key to achieving this successfully is research – the more research you do, the more likely you are to choose wisely. Aspects to consider might include climate, proximity to an airport, distance from the nearest beach, local amenities, the number of expats resident in the area, etc. Once you know what area you prefer, you then need to decide whether you want to buy on the coast, in the countryside inland or in a town or village. Generally speaking, coastal properties tend to be more expensive than those inland. Choosing between the village and the countryside Life in a village can be quite noisy and the views are often limited, but the hustle and bustle of village life and the close proximity of local amenities including shops, bars, restaurants, etc can outweigh any drawbacks. Learning Spanish is easier if you are based in a village as is becoming involved in the local community and joining in village based activities. Owning a property in the countryside can lead to a feeling of isolation and it is usually necessary to drive some distance for shopping, schools and eating out. Neighbours are often not Spanish so learning the language can be more difficult. However these inconveniences are compensated for by the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, the beautiful surrounding scenery and the wonderful views.

40

The Grapevine

Choosing the right kind of property You must also determine the type of property you want – a modern villa, an older style country house, a townhouse or an apartment. You need to consider your priorities and decide what is important to you – outside space, views, swimming pool, garage, etc. If you are not intending to live in Spain permanently, a property in the countryside will need to be looked after in your absence. Land and swimming pools have to be maintained whether you are in residence or not. Requirements for buying a property in Spain In order to buy a property in Spain you must have an N.I.E. number (foreigner's identification number) and a Spanish bank account – both are essential and we will help you to acquire them. N.I.E. numbers are obtained from the local police station in the competa area this is inTorre del Mar and you have to attend in person in order to apply for the certificate. You need to take your passport and a copy of it. The N.I.E. number is very important and you will be asked for it time and time again. A Spanish bank account is simple to open – you merely need to decide which bank you want to deal with and then go in and open an account. You need to take your passport and N.I.E. number with you.

Starting the buying process Once you have found your perfect property and decided to proceed with the purchase, the buying process will begin. Before you sign anything or pay any money you should take advice from a legal adviser. You can use either a lawyer or an asesoria/gestor (conveyancer). Your legal adviser will assist you through every stage of the buying process and once you have completed the purchase of your new property, he/she will then help you with taxes, wills, payment of utility bills, etc. Purchase contract The purchase contract will usually be prepared by your legal adviser and it must be agreed by both the buyer and the seller. Before you sign this contract, you must be absolutely certain that you have chosen the right property as the contract is binding for both the buyer and the seller and there will be penalty clauses should either party rescind the contract. Payment of deposits Holding deposit Once the terms of the purchase have been agreed by both parties, the buyer will normally be required to pay a holding deposit of â‚Ź3,000 which will remove the property from the market for a fixed period of time and enable the buyer's legal adviser to ensure that the documentation for the property is correct. 10% deposit When both parties have agreed the contents of the purchase contract, a deposit of 10% of the purchase price (less the â‚Ź3,000 holding deposit) is then paid by the buyer within an agreed time limit. This is a non-refundable payment and will only be reimbursed in the event of a specific clause in the contract not being fulfilled. Searches Prior to completion your legal adviser will carry out searches and obtain a Nota Simple. This document confirms that the seller is the registered owner of the property and that all taxes have been paid. Your legal adviser will also check to see whether any debts or charges exist on the property. All bills relating to the property such as electricity, water, telephone and I.B.I. (council tax) must be proven to have been paid up to date. If there are any outstanding issues, your legal adviser will ensure that an

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

amount of money is retained from the seller in order to cover any unpaid expenses. Completion The completion date is agreed between the buyer and the seller and takes place at the office of a Notary - an officer of the State whose job it is to ensure that all the legalities are completed correctly. Both the buyer and the seller are required to appear before the Notary in person at the same time. If you are unable to attend in person, you must obtain a power of attorney for someone else (often your legal adviser) to sign on your behalf. Once both the buyer and the seller have signed the title deed, you will be handed the keys to your new home. Insurance The insurance of the property becomes your responsibility once completion has taken place. Expenses It is advisable to budget for between 10% and 11% of the purchase price of the property to cover taxes and expenses. The costs involved include Notary fees, Value Added Tax (I.V.A.) for new properties only, stamp duty, land registry fees, legal fees and mortgage arrangement fees (if applicable). After sales service At Sunset Properties our company ethos is all about customer service - once a client, always a client. REDWELL® INFORMS: INFRARED IS WELLNESS WARMTH

W

e humans have evolved with the capacity to absorb infrared heat, which in turn has a beneficial effect on our immune system. In Japan 1967 Dr. Tadishi Ishikawa designed the first model of an infrared cabin. This system was initially only used by doctors. In 1981, the Infrared sauna for general public use was released. Since then it has proved very successfully in the private sector as well as by professionals such as doctors and therapists in clinics and spas, to support their treatment. WARMTH THAT WORKS! Infrared heat increases circulation in the skin, stimulates the metabolism, is very hygienic due to cleaner air and has a detoxifying effect. Rheumatoid patients respond to a lack of air circulation. Asthmatic patients also benefit from clean air. Allergy sufferers can breathe a deep sigh of relief because there is less dust, pollen, bacteria and mould spores in the air. In addition, infrared heat has the advantage over other heating methods that the emitted heat penetrates the human body to a greater extent. This not only strengthens the immune system, but also helps to better compensate exposure from electro-smog. According to IGEF the wavelengths emitted from Redwell® panels strengthens the human immune system. Redwell® products are of course TÜVcertified and both the IGEF and TÜV certify that Redwell® panels are low electro-smog emission and completely safe. The materials used for Redwell® heating elements meet the highest standards of quality and longevity and meet the ecological ideals of today's society. Treat yourself to energy savings, high comfort, healthy indoor environment, no dust and no maintenance costs.

And on top of all these advantages the Redwell® heaters look so nice that people who visit your home, will feel the warmth but do not recognise that the heat comes from the pictures and mirrors hanging on your walls. See main ad on opposite page

t's December and suddenly the town's balconies, rails and planters are filled with poinsettias. These plants have dark green leaves below and brilliant red above and are a simple but vivid declaration that Christmas is coming. After the bank-holiday on the 6th and 8th December many families, and especially the matrons thereof, get busy preparing the Belén (nativity scene). In many homes this is extensive, replicating not just a stable but a town and its population. You don't just need Mary, Jesus and Joseph: you need multiple stagings for the town; you need shepherds and kings, camels and sheep, a good crowd of angels and an inn-yard full of animals. You need a room to display it and a small fortune to buy it all! That, perhaps, is another boost for a quite different tradition: Spain's Christmas lottery. The lottery that eventually became El Gordo has been running since the 1760s and even the civil war couldn't stop it: each side ran their own. Strictly El Gordo ('the fat one') refers only to the jack-pot (about €3 million) of the Christmas lottery, but there are lots of prizes. There are 185 separate numbered series; 85,000 numbers are issued for each series. Each whole ticket costs €200 – but it is divided again into 'decimos' – tenths. These are the paper ticket you buy at around €20. If you are charged more, the seller is not (usually) pulling a fast one. Sellers expect a small profit and many organisations, such as schools and charities use lottery tickets to raise money. And the multiple division of the tickets means that if you win on a locally bought ticket some

Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

t may seem strange to be talking of succulent plants at Christmas time, but some of the extensive aloe family put on their best festive gear at this time of the year – glowing red candle flowers held high over holly green leaves - so it seems a shame to exclude them from the party!

soaking, say fortnightly; this will stop them shrivelling but, in any case, autumn rains will soon restore them to their former plumpness. They make good pioneer plants, quickly filling out to block weeds, stop erosion on banks and some will even brighten up difficult dry shady areas.

Belonging to the asphodelaceae family, there are some 450 species many of which are native to South Africa, though some do hail from more tropical parts, Arabia and the island of Madagascar. The range covers small rosette-like plants through to towering trees, 20m high, with stout trunks. With their thick fleshy and waxy leaves, they adapt well to harsh climates with little rainfall and they make great stalwarts in our gardens. Originating from sunny climes, most bear no stalks as they do not need to reach for the sunshine. The leaves are often tightly packed, overlapping with their neighbours to trap small droplets of water and shade each other from the fierce sun. Prehistoric rock art testifies to their longevity; the ancient Egyptians used their gel in embalming and Greek herbals sang their praises. The name aloe is from the Greek alsos, which, in its turn, derives from the earlier Arabic word, alloeh or from the Hebrew word allal, all meaning bitter.

Their fat orange-red-yellow candle-like flowers are sought out by birds and bees. They light up dark corners; glow spectacularly against white walls and are stunning with a blue sky backdrop. The leaf sap of several species – particularly aloe vera, aloe arborescens, and aloe ferox – is well known in the medicinal and cosmetic industries and I've sung the praises of aloe vera on many occasions. But, this month, let's talk specifically about some of the most decorative aloes for our gardens.

Aloes need well-drained soil; they will flourish in sun-baked spots in poor, gravelly ground. During the hottest weather, you could give them a

Aloe arborescens, the red hot poker or Krantz aloe flowers around Christmas time brightening winter gardens for a long period. It can reach around 2m x 2m. The spiny toothed and curved leaves radiate in rosettes to form a branching shrub. It has the third widest distribution of any aloe; it will grow at sea level and high up on exposed rocky cliffs, krantz meaning of rocky places. It makes a great living hedge, rejected by most grazers as too bitter to be edible, and it was thus often planted around kraals (enclosures for domestic livestock) in South Africa. Abandoned kraals can often be defined years later because the aloes still persist. It is

easily propagated from young basal plants. Will survive short spells of below zero temperatures and looks stunning when iced with snow! Aloe ferox, the 'fierce' or Cape aloe. This, along with aloe vera, is the cornerstone of a multimillion industry in South Africa and is the source of bitter aloes – remember how that was used to discourage nail biting! It can form a fabulous succulent tree held on a stout stem. The blue-green leaves are lined with spiny margins and the scarlet flowers appear in springtime. Aloe marlothii, mountain aloe. A striking plant, often used as a single specimen plant or, because of its stout stems, as a 'pillar' plant marking boundaries, driveways etc. Naturally occurring in stony, mountainous areas, it will, nevertheless, not support long spells of freezing weather – try it in large-scale rockeries or outcrops of rock where the additional radiated heat will suit it well. It can be propagated from seeds sown thinly in sand; keep warm and water daily until the mini-aloe plants take shape, then reduce watering. Development will be slow; transplant into individual pots, in a mix of sand and soil, after about a year and grow on. It ultimately makes a large plant, needing space to effectively show its drama. Plants are known to live well beyond 100 years.

Indigenous tribes hang whole plants in huts of young women; if the plant flowers, it is an indication that the woman will bear many children. Propagation is from fresh seeds, sown as a. marlothii. Remember that this is a desert type plant and it can be killed by over watering or cold wet soils. Aloe vera, syn. aloe barbadensis, the healing plant. This species has been so widely naturalised that its origins are unknown, though thought to be from either tropical America or Arabia. It is the best known aloe, aloe arborescens famed for its medicinal powers, and of considerable economic importance. Extracts of the gel are used in a huge range of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. The tapered fleshy leaves, held in loose rosettes, are toothed and sometimes marked with white spots. Excessive sun and drought can cause them to change to a dull chocolate colour. The yellow flowers, which form erect candelabras, are sterile so propagation is only from small 'pups'. Break these off and plant into gritty soil. Plants are not hardy and will suffer badly under freezing conditions turning mushy and rotting away. Plant some aloes and let them light up your Christmas year after year. Have a very happy one.

We are taking orders for Christmas trees up to 4 December 2010 – sorry, after that, we cannot get Aloe variegata, partridge-breasted aloe. MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ACTION FOR ANIMALS! W

e would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and say thank you to our helpers, donors and customers and to Clinica Veterinaria and Naturvets. Without you, the work of Action for Animals would not continue. We have had a productive year, despite the recent horrendous roadworks in Avenida de la Constituciรณn, which have adversely affected the shop. Having said that, we have been amazed at how many of you have navigated the diggers (that's the machines, not the men), the holes in the road and knee high mud, to shop with us and to bring us your donated goods. What a loyal and intrepid bunch you are! Thank you all! Funds from the Action for Animals Charity Shop continue to fund the Trap, Neuter and Return programme which we operate here in Cรณmpeta. It is now in its third year. For those of you who don't know, this is a project which aims to keep the stray population at an acceptable level. It involves trapping the feral cats (with a humane trap of course), having them neutered, then returning them to the street, where we continue to feed them daily and monitor their general health. We also continue to pay for the neutering of newly adopted pets. So you can rest assured that

if you decide to adopt a stray animal you will not have the financial burden of having to pay to have your new pet neutered. Rehoming abandoned or unwanted pets is an extremely difficult task, which is why our work in Cรณmpeta focuses on actively encouraging people to neuter their pets. In some cases, subject to individual assessment, we may be able to provide financial assistance towards this too. In 2011, as well as continuing with this work, we hope to implement a school programme in the village to educate and encourage our children to respect animals. We are also planning to carry out a few fundraising activities next year, so if anyone has any ideas or would like to be involved in fundraising, please contact Nina at the Charity Shop, 59 Avenida de la Constituciรณn or ring 660586040. In the meantime, we hope you will keep shopping with us, keep bringing us your goods to sell, but most of all, keep yourselves happy and healthy in 2011.

Merry Christmas!

New Mercedes A fellow bought a new Mercedes and was out on the interstate for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him There's no way they can catch a Mercedes," he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100....Then the reality of the situation hit him. "What am I doing?" he thought and pulled over. .

The cop came up to him, took his license without a word and examined it and the car. "It's been a long day, this is the end of my shift and it's Friday the 13th. I don't feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven't heard before, you can go." .

The guy thinks for a second and says, "Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back!" .

"Have a nice weekend," said the officer.

Cocktails at Alberdini by Enmanuel Lopez Ruiz

“Alberdini”

The Alberdini Special!

Enmanuel's passion for playing around behind the bar with bottles in search for the perfect cocktail, had this as a result. He kept the recipe a secret up until now, only for Grapevine readers… but off course now one can prepare it like him, and there's nothing like drinking it at the Alberdini, where it belongs!

Take one large wine glass Take a plate and put white sugar and a little bit of Granadine on it. Press the glass up-side-down on the plate to decorate the glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice Take a cocktail shaker, and add the following. 30 ml. “Ponche Caballero” 30 ml. “Malibu” 30 ml. “Martini bianco” 30 ml. “Negrita” (dark rum) 120 ml. of pineapple juice 10 ml. of Grenadine

Shake, Shake, Shake!!!

Fill the glass up with the mixture, and decorate with a short black straw and a slice of pineapple.

DRINK AND DRUGS A man is stopped by the police at midnight and asked where he’s going. “I’m on the way to listen to a lecture about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse on the human body.” The policeman asks, “Really? And who’s going to give a lecture at this time of night?” “My wife”, he replies.

FROM THOMAS COOK HOLIDAYS LISTING SOME OF THE GUEST'S COMPLAINTS DURING THE SEASON. 1. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.” 2. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels." 3. "The beach was too sandy."

THE DIVORCED BARBIE DOLL One day a father gets out of work and on his way home he suddenly remembers that it's his daughter's birthday. He pulls over to a Toy Shop and asks the sales person, 'How much for one of those Barbie's in the display window?' The salesperson answers, 'Which one do you mean, Sir? We have: Work Out Barbie for ¤19.95, Shopping Barbie for ¤19.95, Beach Barbie for ¤19.95, Disco Barbie for ¤19.95, Ballerina Barbie for ¤19.95, Astronaut Barbie for ¤19.95, Skater Barbie for ¤19.95, and Divorced Barbie for ¤265.95'. The amazed father asks: 'It's what?! Why is the Divorced Barbie ¤265.95 and the others only ¤19.95?'

4. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white." 5. "Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women." 6. "We bought' Ray-Ban' sunglasses for five Euros (£3.50) from a street trader, only to find out they were fake." 7. "No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled." 8. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish..."

The annoyed salesperson rolls her eyes, sighs, and answers:

9. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England it only took the Americans three hours to get home."

'Sir..., Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken's Car, Ken's House, Ken's Boat, Ken's Furniture, Ken's Computer, one of Ken's Friends, and a key chain made with Ken's balls.

10. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends' three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller."

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA Roger Blackwell Having had a fall and been taken to hospital on 21 October, sadly Roger died at 12.15am on October 22. He leaves a daughter, a son, 4 grandchildren, and me, his wife. He also left his beloved Cómpeta and all the many many friends he had made and who joined us in our celebration of his life and last goodbye. We, as a family, took great comfort in the deservedly marvellous send off Rog had and we thank you all for being there. Some more thanks to a few people in particular. Ron, you really honoured Rog with your words, on his behalf I thank you so much. You guys that carried the coffin, I hope you have got over the strain, Rog was not a little man in any sense! How chuffed he would have been that ´the boys´ did him so proud. Alan you managed the music system just right. Natalie, words cannot express how fantastic you have been. I thank you with all my heart. Rog and I were married for 40 years and during all of that time, through thick and thin, good and bad, ups and downs we totally pulled together as one. Although he had not been well for some time I will miss so much that feeling of being as one. He was blessed with an amazing artistic talent and, as he would be the first to say, he had the artistic temperament as well! But he was also one of the kindest and most gentle of men. He will live on through

Cerezo’s Gallery In Canillas Albaida Kate Morris takes center stage again--not as musical theatre diva, choir director or Royal British Legion Chaplain--but as visual artist in her first exhibition now showing at Cerezo's Bar & Cafe and now gallery in Canillias de Albaida, displaying an array of impassioned pastel drawings and paintings of animals: dogs, cats, mules, horses, donkeys, lions and tigers.Launched unofficially mid-November in Cerezo's new gallery and the second exhibitor there, Kate's work reveals her soulful passion for capturing personalities of animals in her In Memoriam show, remembering animals dead and alive from photographs she skillfully interprets with calculating precision. But one thing she sees as central to her portraits, the eyes. The official opening, complete with a special menu of food and beverages and live music, is set for to begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, 9 December.

Kate stresses she's giving half of any profits to CAT, which needs funds to continue its work of neutering and feeding feral cats in and around the village. She draws primarily from photographs of animals people provide her or she has taken. To contact Kate, call 952-553-07 Christmas Market in Cómpeta A Christmas market will be held in Cómpeta on Saturday 4th December behind the Town Hall or if it is wet underneath the Town Hall in the car park. It is in aid of local charity Cudeca and a local animal charity. Christmas Night Market A Christmas night market will be held in December 10th at Chringuito Antonio Puente don Manuel.

Santa Comes to Cómpeta! Saturday 4th of December Santa will be paying Sugar and Spice in Cómpeta a visit distributing free gifts for all those well behaved children. There will also be a special post-box to for all those Christmas lists. Santa will then read all of his mail and write a reply which can be
