British woman has died after falling from the ninth floor balcony of a hotel in Benidorm. Danielle Hall, 21, reportedly from Newcastle, died after a night out in the Spanish Costa Blanca resort. It is understood she was staying at the three-star Bermudas apartment hotel with her boyfriend, Jordan Bevan, 23, and his grandmother. Local reports said Hall, a supermarket worker, lost her balance and went over the balcony railing at about 2am after going to answer the door to a relative who was also staying at the hotel. They had only arrived at the hotel for a week-long stay the day before the tragedy. A spokeswoman for the Bermudas hotel said: “We can’t give much more information about what happened because we weren’t there when it happened. It was about 2am. The police were here, along with firefighters, ambulance crews and forensic officers. We’re still coming to terms with what’s happened.” panish police would not confirm the woman’s identity due to privacy laws but said the death did not appear to be suspicious. “She was on holiday in Benidorm

with her family and her boyfriend,” said a police spokesman. “At about two in the morning, she fell six floors – about 25 metres – and died.” He added that police had been in touch with the British consulate. A police investigation has been launched under the supervision of a judge. Police said they were not in a position to make an official comment but were treating the death as an accident.

en Kurdish migrants from Iran who were found alive in Spain inside a sealed container belonging to the Mango fashion retailer believed they were bound for Britain. Staff at a Mango logistics centre in Lliçà d’Amunt, near Barcelona, opened a container brought in by a lorry on Wednesday morning and found four children, five men and a woman concealed inside. One of the group was vomiting and all 10 were sent to hospital as a precaution, but they were described as being in “generally good health”.

Spanish man has taken legal action against health authorities after seeing in cigarette packets what he believes
is a photograph of his face with a breathing tube inserted into his mouth during an operation. “That’s me in that photograph,” the 54year-old from Boiro, northwestern Spain, told La Voz de Galicia newspaper. “It must have been taken when I had my last back operation three years ago. I have made my complaint to the police so that they take my face off the pack and I don’t have to see myself every day,” explained the man who admits to being a smoker and would only identify himself by his initials FJTA. He said that the operation was nothing to do with a smokingrelated illness but rather to put titanium implants into his spine. “It says on the pack that ‘smoking causes strokes and disability’, but I’m not in that photo due to the consequences of smoking.”But the Galician public health service, Sergas, said the photograph could not have been taken in their hospital because “the breathing tube is a different type to those we use”. In fact, the Galician man is not the only person to have reported unauthorised use of a photograph arising from the same health warning image.

ldeaseca, in the province of Avila is one of many towns across Spain to experience population decline as younger generations move away to seek work leaving only aging residents behind. The rural town deep in farming country has a population of 254 at the last count in 2014, almost a third of the number of people living there at the town's peak in 1970 when 610 people called it home. Jesús Izquierdo, the mayor of Aldaseca said he has introduced the “baby cheque” as a means to encourage young families to stay. "We are struggling against a demographic crisis,” the mayor told Spanish news agency Efe. “In Aldeaseca, we have resorted to new baby grants to try to encourage people to stay and thereby avoid closing services, such as school,” he explained.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Top Tips for a Pet-Friendly Christmas!"
C
hristmas is coming so we thought it'd be a good time to remind you how to keep your furry family members safe during the festive season. Food and Drink Chocolate is poisonous to cats and dogs, so if you're putting presents under your tree, make sure you keep boxes of chocolates out of your pet's reach. This also applies to edible tree decorations. An enterprising pet will surely sniff them out and might even knock down your wonderfully decorated tree to get at them! Don’t give your pet cooked turkey or chicken bones. They can splinter and cause serious issues for your pet - damaging his gums, teeth, and throat; causing pain and potential internal injury. Fatty, spicy foods shouldn't be fed to your furry friends either, so keep that Boxing Day turkey curry for the humans! If your celebration includes alcoholic beverages, be sure to place your unattended drinks where pets can't get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from
14 The Grapevine
respiratory failure. Decorations Lilies, Christmas roses, poinsettias, amaryllis, holly berries (and their leaves), and mistletoe are among the dangerous plants often used as Christmas decorations, so keep them in an area your pet can't reach. Cats and kittens in particular are always fascinated by ribbons, strings and other similar types of items but if swallowed, they can cause intestinal obstructions that may require surgical treatment and may even prove to be fatal. Candles are another decorative hazard. Burning candles should be placed on high shelves or mantels, out of your pet's way. Don't leave lighted candles unattended - pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock them over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface and if you leave the room, put the candle out! Electrical cords can be dangerous. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and electrocution is a real risk for any pet that bites into a lowhanging electrical cord. Tinsel is very dangerous for dogs and cats. Kitties especially love
Christmas Tree Tips: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. Tie the tree to the wall or ceiling to keep your dog or cat from pulling it over. Ornaments, especially glass ones, need to be kept out of reach in case they get knocked off the tree. Shards from broken ornaments may injure paws, mouths, or other parts of your pet's body. Don't put lights on the tree's lower branches. Your pet might get tangled up in the lights, or may inadvertently get shocked by biting through the wire. If you buy a “real” Christmas tree, keep the area free and clear of pine needles. While they may not seem dangerous, the needles can puncture your pet's intestines if ingested. We hope you found this article helpful and wish you a safe and joyous Christmas. Don't forget to come and visit Santa and his little helpers at our stall at the Christmas Market, next to the church in the main square, on Saturday December 3rd. Merry Christmas everyone! CHRISTMAS CHEER AT BODEGAS BENTOMIZ Wine, Dining and Song
C
hristmas time is the time for wine! Did you know that one of Malaga's most prestigious wineries is right here in the Axarquia? Just above Sayalonga, about 20 minutes from the coast (or 10 from Cómpeta!) is Bodegas Bentomiz, where they make the wonderful Ariyanas wines – white, red and rosé, sweet and dry – in the most beautiful setting imaginable. Their glorious views of the mountains and the Mediterranean are complemented by their beautiful building. It is built in a modern style – very light and airy – but blends in with the landscape as the outer walls are clad in slate, which matches the slate 'terroir' of the vineyards. This setting has been delighting visitors for years. The winery's tours, wine-tasting, lunches and concerts are extremely popular – their 5-star TripAdvisor listing is full of eulogies to these experiences. “The Complete Wine Experience” describes their combined tasting and lunch service, as well as reflecting the bodega's philosophy: it is all about beautiful wines!
22 The Grapevine
The food isn't bad either. Created by the chef Juan Quintanilla, owner and manager of the Sollun restaurant in Nerja (named for Juan's daughters, Sol and Luna), the menus are designed to pair perfectly with the wines they accompany. This is the reverse of standard practice: as Juan says “In my restaurant the food comes first and then the wine; in Bodegas Bentomiz the wine is first and then the food.” Juan works with André and a dedicated kitchen team to produce from fresh, local ingredients, exquisite dishes to delight and surprise. They look for lightness, delicacy and elegance. They aim to use ingredients that are really fresh – fish bought from the coast that morning; herbs picked from the garden 20 minutes before – because the fresher the food, the more taste it carries with it. Satisfying the eye is a key part of creating dishes that really surpass the expectation. You have to think about colour, balance and form: the dishes should express the artistry with which they were designed – they should tell you that the kitchen staff cares about the way the food is placed on the plate. Food can be an art form
after all. All of this is not to forget the test of taste. The standard meals served throughout the year are the 3-course Wine-maker's menu and the 5-course Tasting menu. They are both full meals, though the five courses gives the dinner a greater experience of the kitchen team's skill in producing dishes that will please the palate as well as the eye. And for Christmas? Juan and André will be cooking up something special, of course! The bodega will open right through the holiday period – from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day – excluding only the 27th - with a special menu of food worth savouring, mouthful by mouthful. I can't tell you much more; I am sworn to secrecy – but there will certainly be wine! And on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day visitors will even enjoy complementary live music in the Wine Salon. Something to bring 2017 in with a swing? What a merry way to celebrate! THE PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW WHEN CLAIMING AN INHERITANCE IN SPAIN Axarquia solicitors
I
n this article we explain the procedures to follow when handling an inheritance in Spain. However, it is important to note that this is only a summary of the salient points, and to ensure the correct procedure is followed the intervention of a specialized attorney is necessary. 1.First it is essential to obtain the death certificate from the country where the person died. In the case of foreigners who have died in their country of origin and have assets in Spain the Death Certificate would be obtained there and then should be translated into Spanish and an “Apostille” (an official stamp), should be acquired to make it valid for use in Spain. Without this document, which is the only official proof of death, the heirs will not be able to process the inheritance. 2.Secondly, after 15 working days from the death (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), The Certificate of Wills and, where necessary, The Contracts and Insurance Certificate must be acquired. The first is necessary to confirm whether or not a will has been signed by the deceased, and the
24 The Grapevine
second as proof of any insurance contracts that provide compensation for the death. In order to obtain these certificates it would be necessary to present the Death Certificate, fill out an official application form and provide proof of payment of the fee (currently 3.60 € for each certificate). These certificates are issued on the spot. 3. Get a certified copy of the will. Once you have found out which Notary signed the Last Will and Testament of the deceased you would need to apply for a Certified Copy of the will from that Notary. This can only be applied for by a person directly mentioned in the document, (an heir or legatee), or with a Power of Attorney, by a legal representative of any interested party. 4. Make an inventory of assets and debts to inherit. The next step is to locate all assets held by the deceased in Spain and collect all documentation relating thereto. These assets must be valued later in order to distribute them as requested by the deceased and then for tax purposes. 5.Signature of award deed of
inheritance. This is done in writing naming who are the heirs, specifying the inventory of assets and debts, and listing what is awarded to each heir. 6.Payment of taxes. There are two tax liabilities if a property is part of the inheritance: a. Inheritance Tax. b. The tax increase in value of urban land known as "municipal capital gain"(Plus Valía). Both taxes should be paid within 6 months from the date of death. In addition to the aforementioned costs inheritance also generates notary fees and registration fees which are highly variable since they depend on many factors such as the number of documents or the amount of goods and their value. To this you should add Lawyers fees, as this complicated procedure would definitely require the assistance of a qualified professional. White Christmas Bin Cosby stars in this Christmas flick, that is more famous for the song from it than it even the film. The movie is a charming one where two GI's home from WW2 fall in love with a pair of sisters and help them with their failing Inn in Vermont.
FILMS TO WATCH AT CHRISTMAS
We select some of the best
C
hristmas is about sharing time with family and friends and for many of us, one of the best things about Christmas is spending time watching Christmas films together. The problem is come Christmas time, there are so many to chose from. We've decided to compile a list of what we consider to be the best films for Christmas ever and though you may dispute them, they are some of the best films ever made and are sure to give you the fuzzy Yuletide feeling inside! Elf For laughs and stupidity and a festive feeling to boot, Elf secures itself on our list. The Will Ferrell persona of Buddy the Elf is one of his most memorable and may be remembered more than anchorman in years to come. Ferrell is brilliant in this film as a clueless elf in Manhattan and really makes one of the best movies we've seen of this kind ever. Home Alone 1 & 2 Though both films have suspiciously the same plot line they are both brilliant. Boy gets lost in big city and ends up getting embroiled in trouble with two burglars. Joe Pesci is brilliant and Culkin excellent as 8 year old Kevin. The film really is a
funny and touching Christmas hit and one all the family will enjoy, while having a giggle at the 90s hairstyles and clothing. Scrooged Bill Murray fans will love this Christmas hit. Bill Murray's amazing acting ability and the way he can walk the line between pathos and sheer outright hilarity is brilliant. Murray ends up receiving the Christmas Carol treatment in this Dicken's romp, which takes a modern twist. The mixture of a great story, brilliant acting and Murray's comedic genius makes this a excellent one for Christmas. It's a Wonderful Life One of the Christmas classics and for many a must see every Christmas. This tale of depression is a Christmas classic that embodies all the values of Christmas, from family, to friends to the joy of life. Miracle on 34th Street This classic has been remade a number of times, yet it is the original that endures. Made in 1947, it is about Kris Kringle who is termed insane for thinking he is Santa Claus, when he actually is. However, after some brilliant acting and a great story all is restored and Christmas can continue.
National Lampoon Christmas Vacation For sheer silliness this film is a laugh a minute comedic riot. The amount of one liners this film offers is huge and it really goes for the love/hate Christmas relationship some people have. It is a very funny movie that really has a large number of small laughs making it ideal for that Christmas bit of cheer. A Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burton's film is ultimately a creative dream and one of our favourites, even on this list. The amazing creativity and the awesomely ghoulish film with a meaning is a brilliant movie and one that shows Burton's creative genius and how Christmas films aren't all the same. A Christmas Carol Whether it is in the original form, or even the Muppets version, A Christmas Carol is a must see at Christmas time. This Dickens's classic is possibly best reproduced in the 1951 version where Scrooge is acted brilliantly. It is a black and white version usually, though a coloured one exists. However it is a brilliant version of the film. The Kermit the Frog version also is quite an exciting one and really offers a great take on the carol. The Muppets are there usually hilarious selves and it is also a great one for kids and adults alike. Cormac Reynolds

ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS AND SONGS The old ones are the best!!
E
veryone of us has memories coming from hristmas songs that we cherish since our childhood. As a child, we never questioned these things; we just learned them and grew to love them. Legend says that the first Christmas chant would have been sang when Jesus is born. Can you imagine that it is well over 2,000 years ago? However, it is only during the 13th century that Saint Francis of Assisi made Christmas songs published in a language understandable and spoken by everyone instead of Latin. Born in Italy, Christmas songs arrived in England where they have been associated with dances and became the popular Christmas carols. Over the centuries, the tradition changed: carolers also sang to raise funds for charity, receive gifts or a wassail bowl. For decades, American Christian culture grew by the addition of Christmas carols from various parts of the world. In 1447, Johannes Gutenberg invented the mechanical printing press; which enabled publishers to print things in a very short period of time. And so the words and lyrics to the Christmas carols were copied and distributed all over the countries; which made them become so popular. Of course, during the past centuries Christmas and Christianity were a great part of everyone’s life. Unfortunately, the year 1649, Cromwell banned Catholicism in England, including Christmas. When in 1661 Charles II restored these traditions, singing carols became one of the most popular traditions. The largest part of the most famous Christmas carols have been written from the mid-1700’s to the early 1800’s and are still popular today. In 1742 there was a fundraiser in Ireland where George Frederich Handel performed the well known "Messiah" carol.
30 The Grapevine
"Silent Night" was written in 1818 by the Austrian Joseph Mohr and its original title was "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht". The story of this Christmas carol was that the organ of his church had broken and he needed to write a song that did not require to him use this instrument but that could be accompanied by a guitar. Today, it is easy to create a carol: when the holiday season comes, artists as well as Hollywood produce their Christmas hymns. But we always have a preference for the flavours and the sounds of the old Christmas songs. Traditions are hard to leave and while we might like new carols none of them would ever replace oldies such as The Little Drummer Boy or Silent Night. While the number of Christmas carols we listen to is really large, almost none of them are a recent one. of course one of the best ways to celebrate the Christmas season is to gather around and sing songs with your family and friends. Happy Christmas! D. Halet

S
o as mentioned last month the main things we want to be removing from our diets are, Processed Foods, Sugar, Wheat & Gluten. Some of you may be thinking ok so what can I eat then? I'm going to highlight the macronutrients that we all need to be adding into our new healthy diet. Macronutrients consist of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. All 3 have an important function and are essential for a balanced diet. Consuming these correctly, alongside a structured exercise schedule is the key to becoming a better and healthier you. Carbohydrates: Firstly let me just confirm that eating carbs does not make you fat. Eating too many of them and more of what your body needs is what causes you to store fat. Carbohydrates are great for energy and recovering from workouts. The carbohydrate I personally recommend is sweet potato. I follow a structure where by I consume carbs only on days

when I am exercising, days when you are giving your body a rest you don't need the extra fuel. Fats: Not all fats are bad for you in fact, some fatty acids are powerful sources of energy, remember we have eliminated sugar from our diet so now the body is burning fat for fuel. Eggs, oily fish like salmon & mackerel, also avocado, nuts, flax seed, coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil are all great sources, so try and aim to include some of these into each meal of the day. Proteins: Similar to fats, proteins are also vital for building a strong healthy body, whilst building a healthy immune system.
protein. Alongside your exercise this will repair and increase muscle tissue which is key to speed up your metabolism. I hope my articles are starting to help some of you make healthy changes in your lives. Check out January's edition where I'll be sharing my top tips on how you can get back on track and increase the speed of your metabolism after the festive period. I recommend that all meals include a protein source. These are proteins which contain essential amino acids and include things such as fish, poultry, egg whites, beans or lean meat. Eating these correctly in line with your energy demands will ensure that your muscles get repaired effectively. I recommend that your first meal of the day contains at least 20g of

endrieka moved to Spain 17 years ago and now fluent in Spanish with a 12 year old son she felt it was time to do something for herself and achieve some of her own ambitions. Over the many years in Spain she had been practicing her creative and artistic talents as more of a hobby and a form of relaxation and escapism but over more recent year's thoughts of using them in a business came to mind.
pieces from all over Europe. Furniture could be left as it is, as a genuine antique piece or could be updated by Hendrieka, using her artistic talents or restored using John's professional skill. The aim was to create a unique, authentic and interesting furniture shop for people to visit, browse and of course buy. In June 2015 the furniture shop opened in Competa named Leon Blanco Antiguedades y mas and has proved successful to both locals and customers from further afield and all nationalities.
Hendrieka had become friends with a neighbour, John, who came back and forth from the UK and was an antique dealer, furniture maker and restorer. Henrieka initially helped John update his furniture with her artistic skills. Over time the idea of a shop in Competa came to fruition. Hendrieka had spotted the perfect location with parking right outside, large premises with great light. The business plan was to sell antique furniture. John was able assist to some extent with stock as he regularly sourced unique

Alongside this are antiques often with a story to tell! Hendrieka admits she can get quite obsessive with regards to some of the older pieces and her enthusiasm to research the item to death!! Leon Blanco is extremely competitive with regards to price when comparing to other authentic furniture shops. However Hendrieka regards her shop as not

only well priced but also different, for example the updated furniture brings a twist to the older dated styles providing the shop with a contemporary furniture range. The interesting combinations of textures, colours and styles means there is a piece to enhance any home. Leon Blanco also offers, via John, bespoke furniture and a restoration service that has been used by many customers and insurance companies. Enquires are welcome at the shop for this type of service. Hendrieka has enjoyed going back to work and also the process of opening up the shop and meeting new and nice people. HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE A popular tradition around the world
C
hristmas tree, Yule tree or Tannenbaum (German: fir tree) is one of the most popular traditions associated with the celebration of Christmas. Some say that the tree represents the one whose wood was made into a cross and used to crucify Jesus of Nazareth. Others say that its origin goes back to the original Tree of Knowledge and that is why so many early decorations were apples. Those who point to the ancient Roman celebration of Saturnalia as a source for our contemporary trees note the evergreens were used as decoration during that long ago holiday that ended on December 25. The evergreen continues to weave its way through the history of Christmas trees. It is a symbol of the promise of life to come after months of cold winter. The modern custom of using a Christmas tree can be traced to 16th century Germany, though

neither an inventor nor a single town can be identified as the sole origin for the tradition, which was a popular merging of older traditions mentioned above. In the Cathedral of Strasbourg in 1539, the church record mentions the up rise of a Christmas tree. In that period, the guilds started setting up Christmas trees in front of their guildhalls: A German professor of European ethnology found a chronicle of 1570 which reports how a small fir was decorated with apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers, and erected in the guildhouse, for the benefit of the guild members children, who collected these decorations on Christmas day. During the 17th century, the custom entered family homes. By the early 18th century, the custom had become common in towns of the upper Rhineland, but it had not yet spread to rural areas. Wax candles are attested from the late 18th century. The Christmas tree remained
confined to the upper Rhineland for a relatively long time. It was regarded as a Protestant custom by the Catholic majority along the lower Rhine and was spread there only by Prussian officials who moved there in 1815.In the early 19th century, the custom became popular among the elite and spread to royal courts as far as Russia. A princess introduced the Christmas tree to Austria in 1816. In France, the first Christmas tree was introduced in 1840 by a Duchesse. Candle lights were added to Christmas trees as an attempt to further explain Christmas Ornaments history. Again, however, legend plays an important part in determining how generations of people either did, or didn't, light their trees. Martin Luther is said to have been the first to add lights to his tree in order to give his children a better understanding of the stars in the Heaven from which Jesus came. Whether true or not, it might help explain why, for

decades, lighted Christmas trees were thought to be a part of the Protestant celebration of Christmas and thus were considerably less popular in Catholic homes and churches. Around the midpoint of the Nineteenth Century, in addition to candle lights - or not decorations hanging from Christmas trees included miniature replicas of fruit, animals, toys, musical instruments and angels made primarily out of materials available in homes. By this time the idea of the Christmas tree had already made its way to Britain and in the United States immigrants from Germany had also introduced the idea of the Christmas tree as an integral part of their holiday festivities. Adoption in this country was extensive, aided perhaps by the publication of Kris Kringle's Christmas Tree in 1845. The first Christmas tree to appear in the White House was erected in 1856 by President

Franklin Pierce. The first truly national Christmas tree was inaugurated by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913, but it was not until President Calvin Coolidge moved the tree to its present location near the White House - and ceremoniously switched on the newly installed electric lights - that the idea of an "official" tree took hold. Christmas trees were not limited to a place of honor in the home. Community trees not only became symbols of holiday spirit, but also served as the only source of a tree for the estimated eighty percent of Americans at the turn of the Twentieth Century who did not, or could not, have a tree in their homes. Today’s Christmas ornaments take many different forms, from a simple round ball to highly artistic designs. Baubles are another extremely common decoration, and usually consist of a fairly small hollow glass or plastic sphere coated with a thin metallic layer to make them reflective. Family collections of
personalized Christmas ornaments often contain a combination of commercially produced ornaments and decorations created by family members. Such collections are often passed on and augmented from generation to generation. Today, besides mass-produced ornaments, there is a thriving market in handcrafted Christmas ornaments of every sort. These are typically sold at craft fairs, in craft shops and on the Internet. Individuals' decorations vary widely, typically being a collection of family traditions and personal tastes and preferences; even a small unattractive ornament, if passed down from a parent or grandparent, may come to carry considerable emotional value and be given pride of place on the tree. Each year, 33 to 36 million Christmas trees are produced in America, and 50 to 60 million are produced in Europe. Russell Rhodes

Our host is reminded to save a bit of the yule candle for good luck. 1895 - A candle or lamp must be kept burning all night on Christmas Eve, Unless this is done there will be a death in the house. It was usual for the grocers in Yorkshire to present their customers with candles at Christmas. They were made for the purpose, and were burnt on Christmas Eve. increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es
The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH The Twelve Days of Christmas Plantings
T
he Twelve Days of Christmas is one of our oldest known Christmas songs, but I wonder how many of you know its history? Well it is a little lost in the mists of time but the first known printed version of the song appeared in a children's book called Mirth without Mischief around 1780 published in England, though the song is believed to be French. It's thought that it

started as a Christmastime “memories and forfeits game in which someone recited the first verse; each player repeated the verse and added another until someone made a mistake. The forfeit was likely a kiss under the mistletoe!
On the first day, a partridge in a pear tree. Well pear trees aren't the most common here but I think we could substitute it with a pomegranate tree, glowing redly for Christmastime.
But I thought we could give it a little twist and use it as memory game of some of the best Mediterranean plants to include in

and the tree of love, cercis siliquastrum, with romantically heart-shaped leaves and rosy pink flowers. On the third day, three French hens. Let's have three climbers with gorgeous edible fruits. The pitanga or Brazilian cherry, kiwi vine and passion vine. On the fourth day, four calling birds. My four favourite grasses – blue lyme grass or leymus arenarius Blue Dune, pennisetum setaceum purpureum, bronzed Japanese fountain grass, muhlenbergia cappilaris or pink muhly grass with its froth of pink inflorescences and the lovely strokeable stipa tenuissima Pony Tails. On the fifth day, five gold rings. Or five stunning architectural plants. Try kalanchoe beharensis with big triangular felted leaves, aeonium arborescens 'Schwarzkopf', agave attenuata or fox-tail agave, cycas revoluta or sago palm with its plastic-look leaves and the lovely jagged leaves of melianthus mayor or honeywort. On the sixth day, six geese a laying. Six to closely hug the ground - erigeron or Mexican fleabane, dorycnium hirsutum, lotus berthelotii or parrots beak, drosanthemum, convolvulus sabatius and grevillea lanigera Mont Tamboritha. On the seventh day, seven swans a swimming. Into the shade. Acanthus mollis, tiarella, lamium, heuchera, heucherella, anemone Japonica, ajuga reptans. On the eighth day, eight maids a milking. Eight wonderfully aromatic herbs. Lemon grass, pineapple sage, citronella balm, Thai basil, chocolate mint, southernwood, lemon verbena, comfrey. On the ninth day, nine ladies dancing. Nine dancing and swaying plants. Tulbaghia, gaura, agapanthus, phlomis, verbascum,
digitalis or foxgloves, hollyhocks or althea, verbena bonariensis and echium candicans. On the tenth day, ten lords a leaping. With glorious perfume! Cestrum nocturnum and gladiolis tristis the two must-have dama de noches, heliotropium or hot cherry pie, the jasmine family, distictis laxiflora or vanilla vine, ornamental gingers, tabernaemontana divaricata or pinwheel plant, Madonna lily and many others, choisya ternata or Mexican orange blossom and the real thing, citrus trees of course! On the eleventh day, eleven pipers piping. Eleven of the toughest that you may not know. Salvia lutea and salvia leucantha, vitex agnus castus, cistus Mr. Stripey, rosa rugosa, limonium or sea lavender, leucophyllum, grevillea olivacea, stachys byzantina, plectranthus argentea and metrosideros. On the twelfth day, drummers drumming. A crescendo of colourful daisies! Dimorphotheca, gazania, arctotis, echinacea, coreopsis, gaillardia, rudbeckia, felicia, lampranthus, argyranthemum, euryops tysonii. NERJA EX ROUND TABLERS (41 CLUB) CELEBRATED THEIR 100th MUNCH BUNCH. 41 Club Nerja meets twice a month on the first and third Thursdays. On the first Thursday we celebrate our 'Munch Bunch' where, along with our ladies, we go out for a menu del dia in one of the many restaurants around our very large catchment area. Our Munch Bunch in October was a very special occasion as it was our 100th Munch Bunch. To make it a little more special our current Chairman Jim Skinner had arranged a gentle strole to a 'secret venue' with clues to help us along as part of the fun. We had a new couple join us on the day and having enjoyed themselves so much Bob joined our gang taking our numbers to 42. Details of the Club can be obtained by contacting Alfie Fornear on 626998626 or via our websit 41clubnerja.org where you can see how the Club works, our calendar for the rest of the year and much more.On the third Thursday of the month the men have their evening meeting and many of our ladies join us for a drink before going on to enjoya meal in a local restaurant. We are an International Club with Ex Tablers from ten different countries. Most of our members are in Spain for a few months of the year and join in the fun and friendship of our Club whenever they visit Nerja and surrounding area. So if you are an Ex Tabler from any Club in the world why not come along and we will make you and your lady very welcome. We look forward to welcoming you.
