NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update !

A

draft law covering Spain’s approach to climate change and the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is expected to reach Congress before the year is out. But the Ministry for Environmental Transition has already informed the country’s political parties of some of the key elements of this legislation. And among the proposals is a 2040 ban on the sale of all vehicles that use fossil fuels, whether they be powered by gasoline, diesel or natural gas. What’s more, in 2050 the government hopes to be working with local councils to prohibit the circulation of such vehicles, and is also proposing the obligatory installation of electric charging points in gas stations. Transportation in Spain – and in most of the European Union – is the straggler when it comes to the fight against climate change. While the use of renewable energy continues to grow in the power sector – with a realistic target of 100% of electricity coming from clean sources in the future – road transportation is not progressing at the same speed in the fight against climate change. Just over a quarter of all greenhouse gases emitted in Spain are from the transportation sector, and most of those come

14 The Grapevine

from the roads. Forecasts from the government suggest that if measures are not taken, these emissions will grow 15% from here to 2030.

L

ife expectancy is longer in Spain than it is in the United Kingdom. This is something that has been pointed out by a number of studies, the latest being from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, published recently in The Lancet medical journal. It predicted that by 2040 Spaniards would have the longest life expectancy in the world, and will live on average until they were 85.8 – compared with 83.3, which is the age Brits would be able to look forward to, putting them 23rd on a list of 195 countries. For the British, who equate Spain with sun and sangria, this is hard to comprehend. “How can the Spaniards live so long when they drink and smoke?” mused a recent article in the British newspaper The Times. So what is it that we are doing right? Apart from eating paella as well as vegetables, pulses and fish, The Times suggests it is key lifestyle choices such as sex, siestas and tapas!

mergency Services were forced to evacuate around forty people from two seafront buildings in Tenerife after waves entered the properties and knocked the lifts out of action. The evacuation in the municipality of Garachico was ordered last month as the region was on severe weather alert. Those who could not be accommodated with relatives and friends were looked after by Red Cross personnel in the municipal sports hall.n the municipality of Adeje, waves broke the window of the restaurant of a hotel where several people dined. Local Police officers and members of the Guardia Civil managed to evacuate them all safely and there were no injuries. Waves broke the windows of the first floor of a building in Mesa del Mar, in the municipality of Tacoronte, and the water reached the second floor, so several homes had to be evacuated. Again there were no injuries. Also, a car was dragged into the sea in the Jover, in the municipality of La Laguna, and another in Puerto de la Cruz in the area of El Penitente. In neither case were there any injuries.

P

lans to ban the cremation of morbidly obese people in the Spanish city of Valencia have been withdrawn, reports say.The regional ministry of health changed course amid claims it would discriminate against the obese. The proposal was made on the grounds of reducing pollution.Experts said an average cremation released 400kg of CO2 into the atmosphere - and significantly more if the deceased was morbidly obese. In a report they said that in such cases, "you need a very high amount of fuel leading increase in pollution".The growing popularity of cremations over burials in Valencia has led the authorities to become concerned about the resultant pollution in the city.In 2017 nearly 45,000 bodies were cremated in the city.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Mortgages in Spain hat are the mortgage conditions for foreigners acquiring a home in Spain?

W

mortgage, i.e., on similar terms and conditions as mortgages granted to Spanish citizens, if the following requirements are met:

Last year alone, more than 61,000 home purchase transactions by foreigners were recorded in Spain, 13 % of all home purchases, an all-time record in Spain.

You need to hold an account in the bank which is granting the mortgage, which needs to be headquartered in Spain.

According to 2017 data from the Spanish Land Registry, 7 % of all mortgages to purchase a home were granted to foreigners, totalling 21,000 mortgages. This figure is not even 40 % of the total amount, but indicates fairly attractive conditions for foreign capital investment.

The mortgage instalment must not exceed 30 % of the instalments of any existing debts.

Providing personal endorsements is not compulsory, but will improve financing conditions. If you possess other properties in Spain, home warranties will also be valued. cyclemalaga.com No.1 for bike rental in the Axarquia. Don't just take our word for it! Wonderfull ride in Competa We were a group of 10 guys (for some it was first time on a real race-bike), who rented bikes via cyclemalaga (Hellen and Steve) and can give our highest recommendation. We met them in the square at Competa as agreed, and they where ready with all the bikes, which was top-quality!!! carbon bikes, great helmets and also drink-bottles that we bought for 5€ each, and could keep afterwards. Our rute was Competa - Canillas de albaida, Archez, Arenas, Velez Malaga and down to the coast to have lunch. Then to Torrox and from there up to Competa. Very nice trip!! We can only give the best recommendations to cyclemalaga.com and would recommend everyone to take a biketrip is the most beautifull surroundings. micben86 Frederiksberg, Denmark Cycling trip with Steven Bert and Thomas did a cycling trip of 65 km with Steven. The equipment was perfect, the guidance and service were also the best. One telephone call two days in advance and everything was organised as agreed on. Thank you, Steven !! Cycle Malaga = Excellent Highly recommended. Helen responds to emails quickly and the service from Steve is first class - delivery, set up, pedal options and very knowledgeable, about the excellent bikes and cycling terrain. A great experience. Stewart G London, United Kingdom “Great bike and great service” I hired a bike for 10 days whilst on holiday in Competa in August. Steve delivered an almost brand new Giant TCR Advanced road bike directly to my villa and gave me some great advice on local cycling routes. He even popped back again later to drop off a map of the area which came in very handy. The bike was great, nice and light for the climbs, 22 speed Ultegra groupset (that extra gear definitely came in handy) and a great fit for me (not always easy as I'm 6'6"). Whilst some of the climbs in the area are tough, the scenery when you get to the top is absolutely stunning and well worth the effort! A great service from Helen and Steve and I would recommend them to anyone cycling in the Competa/Nerja/Malaga area. I'll be back again myself next year! Terry R Huntingdon, United Kingdom

For that you should book for one of the bodegas' special events in December and January. They are hosting a pre-Christmas Music & Dinner on Thursday 20th. The meal will be a 5-course gourmet special with wine; the music is live, performed by the exceptional folk musician, composer and poet Keith James. Keith, described by The Independent as playing “some of the most emotive and compelling music you will ever here” has been performing for over 20 years and sold out the bodega with two gigs last Easter. He will be performing his own 'best of' set. Spaces are limited so if you are interested in going to the event email reservas@bodegasbentomiz.co straight away to see if they can squeeze you in.

THE COMPLETE WINE EXPERIENCE At Bodega Bentomiz

T

he Bodegas Bentomiz winery, just off the Sayalonga-Cómpeta road, is a beautiful modern building built by André, who is now running the wine-centred restaurant serving gourmet lunches, but whose first love was architecture. It is in one of the most beautiful places in the Axarquía, with stunning views of the mountains and the sea, and is open right through the year, including December and January. If you take in a tour you hear the story of how Clara and André came from Holland some 23 years ago and got into winemaking as wine-lovers and amateurs before turning it into this amazing business and producing the award-winning Ariyanas range – some of the best wines of Málaga and of Spain - now served

28 The Grapevine

in over 20 Michelin-starred restaurants. The tour and tasting going together and you can follow that with a meal in their lovely wine salon. André, who with Chef Juan Quintanilla, designed the menus, serves beautifully crafted gourmet food to go with the wines. This is what they mean by the complete wine experience – you get to understand the development of the bodega and how it was inspired by the exceptional Malaga grapes – before you taste the wines, and then enjoy them with a perfect food pairing. It is unusual, interesting, beautiful and delicious – and the attention to detail is exceptional. They are open right through the Christmas period. Of course you might be looking, at this time of year for a different kind of outing. It's the season to push the boat out, go the Full Monty and enjoy a little pizzazz!

If either dinner or the date does not suit your plans then there is the option of lunch: Christmas day and New Year's Day, André is planning a 7 course menu with cava and wine. Again there will be live music, classical this time, with a pianist and soprano singer Rosa María Caballero coming from Seville to entertain guests with repertoire that ranges from operatic arias to Christmas carols and songs from Broadway musicals. Whatever will we do when it is January though, and we are stuck in the post-Christmas doldrums? Don't worry – you can keep the party going! If you book for a meal at the bodega in January and, when booking, quote code GRAPEVINE-01-MV you can enjoy the wine pairing menu of 3 or 5 glasses of wine for half price. Just put the code into the 'comments' when you make your booking on line at . Just put the code into the 'comment when you make your booking on line at www.bodegasbentomiz.com. A double Album – Captured. The Best of Keith James – has been released this year featuring 33 songs taken from each of his Album releases over the past 30 years. His brand new project of poetry set to music is the most exciting one yet! Keith has chosen to work with the astonishing work of Pablo Neruda, Maya Angelou, Kahlil Gibran, Frida Kahlo and Kate Tempest. Recording has already started; the Album will be released in March 2019 with concerts also planned for next year.

THE BEST OF KEITH JAMES A concert by English singer songwriter Keith James

O

ne of the UK’s most passionate and enduring concert performers is coming to Competa to give another very special concert in Galeria Luz de la Vida! So if you like his music, don't miss it! Sunday the 16th of Dec 5pm. The art gallery is the perfect place for the concert. Since it has its own intimate ambiance and filled with good quality art. Keith loves the accoustics in the room and every time he finds it a precious experience to perform for this limited amount of people. Keith is a songwriter, music composer, concert performer and poet. He has become one of the most active and inventive concert artists currently performing in the UK. Realising his definite preference for live performance and following a detailed study, 2001 witnessed Keith begin a UK wide tour of concerts based

38 The Grapevine

entirely on his love of the songwriter, Nick Drake. These concerts soon became a huge success. On from this, Keith has performed many different concerts over the past decade, each one centres on studies and transcriptions of revered poets and writers. The Concerts feature the poetry of Lorcaand Keith’s interpretive approach to songs by Leonard Cohen. This year sees Keith James celebrating his fortieth anniversary as a professional musician. Keith is fiercely independent and therefore his career has for many years, existed in a parallel universe, almost under wraps, esoteric and secretive. He has enjoyed very little radio exposure, he doesn’t fit easily into any music category, has never signed a recording or publishing deal. Despite this, he has released 13 CD Albums, all self-produced and self-published.

The evening will feature a collection of the very best material from all of Keith’s concert tours. Songs by Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, John Martyn and Cat Stevens together with Keith’s own dramatic and absorbing songs based on the poetry of Pablo Neruda, F G Lorca, William Blake, Dylan Thomas and Keith himself. A chance to experience this finely tuned artist perform a masterclass of sublimely beautiful music. Max. 35 people can attend the concert so be sure you book in advance: info@lieuwkeloth.nl Time 5pm Entrance fee 10 euro Keith will bring his Cd's as well. 46 The Grapevine

Turrón is of Moorish origin and was invented over 500 years ago in a small town of Spain called Jijona. The wildflowers growing in the mountainsides brought an abundance of honey which is the staple ingredient in turrón. There are two traditional types of turrón. Soft Jijona orturrón blando, which is smooth with a consistency of peanut butter, and hard Alicante or turrón duro, which is like the recipe provided here – a thick almond nougat candy. This recipe is what you would call a turrón casero. One made at home. It’s very simple to make as it only has three ingredients. The egg whites, the binding ingredient, are whipped to a glossy meringue and folded into warmed honey. Together, its brought to heat and constantly stirred until a thick caramelized candy has been formed. This can take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. Once caramelized, roasted almonds are added to the mixture and poured into a mold to cool and harden.

COVIRAN PORTALES IN COMPETA

The Portales Family Double the Size of Their Supermarket

J

ust two short years after opening a brand new supermarket at the top of the village, the Portales family decided to go even bigger and even better by expanding the shop to make it almost double the size. Coviran has long been known for its quality produce and its welcoming atmosphere. The family have had the business for over thirty years and always welcome you with a smile whenever you walk through the door. Starting with a small local shop, run underneath the family home, little by little, Ana, Santiago and Jose Maria have built up the business to what it is today. The expansion has meant that they can now offer an even wider range of goods to be able to cater for all the eclectic needs of our amazing multinational village. With specialist German, Dutch and English suppliers they have a great selection of all those goodies from home that sometimes you just can't live without!

54 The Grapevine

Perhaps the most striking improvement of their new supermarket is the extensive wine and spirit area that now holds almost 200 different wines, a specialist cava area and a substantial spirits section. Whether you are looking for something for a special occasion or a nice bottle to go with dinner, you will find a drink to cater for your every need. The other feature that sets this supermarket apart from all the rest is the butcher´s section towards the back of the shop. The quality of the meat is second to none but it is the ample selection of home-made produce, prepared on site that really stands out. Ana and Ani prepare fresh home-made burgers, sausages, chorizo, marinated chicken breast and skewers every single day. There are vegan and vegetarian options as well and specialist meats, such as corn-fed chicken or Halal produce, can all be pre-ordered. Whilst on the topic of pre-ordering don't forget that Coviran also supplies fresh turkey for

Christmas! Their free home-delivery service means that you have one less thing to worry about! Whether you go and do your shopping in person or phone through your order, everything can be delivered right to your door. They´ve even been known to go and pick clients up from their home and drive them into Cómpeta if necessary! The Portales family really do care about their clients, with most of them becoming friends as time goes by. If there is something that you can't see within the shop, just let them know and they will be sure to try and get it for the next time you are there. You will find them at the top of the village, close to Plaza del Carmen. If you haven't been already, pop in and see them as you won't be disappointed! The biggest supermarket in Cómpeta has now got even more to offer us all! See Advert Opposite

HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS CRACKERS A British Tradition Who invented the Christmas Cracker? Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith in 1846. During a visit to Paris he came across the bob-bon, a sugar almond wrapped in tissue paper (with a twist either side of the centrally placed sweet). Thomas decided to try selling similarly wrapped sweets in the lead up to Christmas in England. His bonbons sold well at Christmas but not at other times of the year. In the early 1850s Thomas came up with the idea of including a motto with the sweet. As many of his bon-bons were bought by men to give to women, many of the mottos were simple love poems. In about 1860, Thomas added the banger, two strips of chemically impregnated paper that made a loud noise on being pulled apart. At first these novelties were called 'cosaques', but they soon became knwn as 'crackers'. Unfortunately for Thomas, his

56 The Grapevine

'cracker' idea was copied by other manufactures and so he decided to replace the sweet with a surprise gift. When Tom died, his expanding cracker business was taken over by his three sons, Tom, Walter and Henry. Walter introduced the hats into crackers and he also traveled around the world looking for new ideas for gifts to put in the crackers. The company built up a big range of 'themed' crackers. There were ones for bachelors and spinsters (single men and women), where the gifts were things like false teeth and wedding rings! There were also crackers for Suffragettes (women who campaigned to get women the vote), war heroes and even Charlie Chaplain! Crackers were also made for special occasions like Coronations. The British Royal Family still has special crackers made for them today!

Very expensive crackers were made such as the 'Millionaire's Crackers' which contained a solid silver box with a piece of gold and silver jewerly inside it! Cracker manufacturers also made large displays, such as horse drawn carriages and sleighs, for the big shops in London. The paper hat was added to the cracker the early 1900s and by the end of the 1930s the love poems had been replaced by jokes or limericks. The longest Christmas cracker pulling chain consisted of 1081 people and was achieved by The Harrodian School in Barnes, London, UK, on 10 December 2015 Crackers were originally called 'cosaques' and were thought to be named after the 'Cossack' soldiers who had a reputation for riding on their horses and firing guns into the air!

NOW........ Travel tips for using the Alsa buses to go to see the Malaga Christmas Lights.

JOSEPHINE DREW KEEPS US UPDATED Bus Times and the Malaga Lights

T

These are the times of the buses weekday that incorporate the hospital route, 7.00 9.30. 3.30.

It came into force on 27.10.18.

The remaining buses at 1.30 and 5.30 still just go straight to Torre del Mar. (You have to walk to the hospital from there).

here is a slight change to the Loymerbus service from Canillas to Malaga.

They changed it a couple of days before the notice went up on the bus and caused quite a stir, as the bus went straight up the Torre del Mar main road and took the 4th turning right, ending up at the Loymerbus Office pointing East. (Before it pointed West). Now the hospital route is on the Malaga route, going from the Loymerbus stop straight to the hospital bus stops, then continuing onto the road next to the hospital and then Malaga. This new service is now going to run on Saturdays, Sundays and Festivals as well, but leaves at 9.00 on those days. An improvement I think, especially if you are needing emergency treatment at weekends and Fiestas!

58 The Grapevine

Those going to El Ingenio or Velez Malaga, get off the bus and cross to the small bus, which now points to the West! This makes it quicker to reach El Ingenio, I tested the route and was shopping by 10.50 after getting the 9.30 bus. I also tested the hospital route, and that takes the same amount of time as before, but I would imagine it makes a few minutes difference to reaching the Motorway and Malaga. (Please note the Summer schedule bus at 15.45, is now not running).

I am often asked about this and I would advise that it is best to park in Torre. Go to the Ticket Office at the bus station and purchase your ticket asking for a Direct bus to Malaga. If you have a green travel card, you have to get a single ticket and I would strongly advise getting your return ticket (vuelta) when you reach the Malaga Port stop or the Main Bus Station and tell them the approximate time you want to have it for.The reason I am advising this is that these buses get very full and are not that frequent, (although I believe Alsa put extra ones on for the Christmas period). If you don’t get a ticket when you reach Malaga and leave it until later, the passengers with a time stipulated ticket get on the bus first and others afterwards. There is a good chance you wont be able to get on the bus and have to wait for maybe up to an hour for the next one on a cold December night! Believe me I have seen this happen. Its not a good idea to park in Lidl car park in Algarrobo Costa and get a bus from there, because often, the very few and far between buses are not Direct, therefore take a very long time to reach Malaga as they go via Rincon and all along the coast. Personally, I used to go about 5 from Torre, the lights go on at 6.30, so you need a good spot to see and listen to the music. The best timed buses home are around 9 or 10 otherwise its very late before you reach Competa or Canillas. Information on the Alsa buses are on Google, either Alsa webpage or Busbud, which seems easier to read.!

RETIRING TO SPAIN Things to consider

E

very year many people from all over Northern Europe, but predominately Britain, consider retiring to Spain. The reasons for this are varied as arethe experiences of those who take the plunge and decide to spend their retirement years in Spain. Here we take an objective look at the pros and cons in the hope to make your move and life here as smooth and as satisfying as possible.

64 The Grapevine

The first reason for retiring to Spain probably has a lot to do with the weather. After suffering a cold winter in northern Europe many people look toward warmer climes. Not only is it a lot more pleasant but as we grow older our bodies certainly benefit from the higher temperatures as do our pockets with the lower fuel bills. Many people report that their arthritis and other aches and pains are much improved by their life in the sun.

The cost of living is another important consideration as, although prices in Spain have undoubtedly risen in the last few years, so they have in the U.K and generally speaking ones pension does go further in Spain. Although the winters can be cold and wet they are never as cold as northern Europe so less is spent on fuel. The cost of running a car in Spain is a lot less than in the U.K. so that is another added bonus.

To advertise call 637 028 873

Property prices on the Costa del Sol make it still possible to sell your U.K. home, buy somewhere very acceptable in Spainand pocket a sizeable chunk to help cushion your retirement years which is an obvious incentive to anyone contemplating retiring to Spain. Areas of inland Spain are still very reasonably priced and the Costa de Luz is emergingas a good alternative to the Costa del Sol. Property prices there are still affordable but planned development looks as though they may well be set to rise thus making it a good area to invest in at the moment. The other reason many people have for retiring to Spain is something less easy to define but none the less important, it is the "quality of life." This may mean different things to different people but even so those who have moved to Spain generally agree that there is an all important something here which has made life better for them. Perhaps it is the more relaxed attitude to life, along with plenty of sunshine and longer daylight hours. Certainly the pace of life is slower here and on the whole less stressful than "back home." So having decided you are retiring to Spain, what is the next step? The most important is decide which part of Spain you wish to move to. It is a large and varied country with something to offer everyone. Do you want to live in a typical Spanish community, a small pueblo somewhere or perhaps buy a Finca with plenty of space and peace and quiet, or like the majority of ex-pats would you prefer to gravitate towards the more popular Costas with the peace of mind that you will be surrounded by like minded people? The Internet gives you the unprecedented opportunity to research areas of interest without having to leave home but once you have decided on the area for you then the foot slogging begins. Try to visit your area of choice at

To advertise call 637 028 873

different times of the year and any properties you wish to view at differentt imes of the day, to see where the sun falls etc. In the winter it can get quite cold even on the coast and you don't want to buy somewhere that sees no sun at that time of the year or alternatively that has no shade in the summer. Also take into account the surrounding area and neighbours. The Spanish,as lovely as they are, are a noisy, gregarious nation with little understanding of the northern European's need for privacy and peace. You will not change this attitude, nor do we have a right to try, so if you don't like it then don't buy an apartment in a basically Spanish enclave but look for somewhere where you will be surrounded by like minded people. If you are visiting out of season then try to find out what the area is like in July and August as you may not wish to cope with an explosion of tourists. Take into account the number a visitors you are likely to have and be sure to buy somewhere with sufficient space, it is surprising how many friends you suddenly have when you retire to Spain! You will also of course want your family to visit, in fact the tug of those you have left behind you can be very strong and something you need to think seriously about before taking the final step. The financial implications of retiring to Spain are also something that needserious consideration. First and foremost you will be able to have your pension paid into a Spanish bank account and by law no commissions are chargeable on such income. " The health care system in Spain is generally very good and of course as a U.K. pensioner you

have full entitlement to all it offers at the moment. Also bear in mind that after quite a short absence from the UK, National Health services will not be available to a returning or holidaying expat. and the European Health card (E111 as was) must be obtained for visits to the UK. On reflection then retiring to Spain can be a very positive move. Coming as it does at a period in your life when it would be all too easy to sit back and vegetate the pleasure and excitement from all the new experiences can have a very positive effect if well planned and executed. Try your best to learn some Spanish not only is the mental stimulation good for the old grey matter but it will make your life in Spain more enjoyable and rewarding. The Spanish are basically very tolerant of all the foreigners that regularly and often permanently invade their shores but they do appreciate you making some effort to speak their lingo,it is only polite really. Remember you are retiring to Spain, it is not Bournemouth with the sunshine! The Spanish culture and attitude to life is different to ours so accept that and don't make your life miserable by trying to change it. So often you hear the that it wouldn't be allowed in England" well just accept the fact that you are not in England and people do things differently in different countries. After all it is your decision to retire to Spain so relax and enjoy it! Ruth Polak the owner of www.costadelsolvacationrentals.com. A web site specializing in holiday villas and apartments on the Costa del Sol and in Rural Andalucia. You will also find lots of information about Spain and Andalucia, in particular.

Every morning for the past six months, I announce loudly to my family that I’m going for a jog, and then I don’t. It’s my longest running joke of this year. A weasel walks into a bar. The Bartender says, "Wow, I've never served a weasel before. What can I get you?" "Pop," goes the weasel.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Talking Trees

H

ow many trees do you have in your garden/chunk of campo? At the Garden Centre, around 5000 m2, we have 31 in the ground and another 5 pending, with, of course, very many more in pots waiting for buyers!

most romantic weeping willow trees all around. Yea, weeping willows around a pool – might look fantastic but not for too many years; they are extremely aggressive rooters and can happily break through concrete to get to water. The maintenance and upkeep became exorbitant and, sadly, the pool closed. This was I know it's the season to talk all back in the days when a pool with things Christmas, including every villa was unknown so you can Christmas trees, but I think it would imagine the mourning of the village be so much better if we all planted a pool closure. tree in our gardens for Christmas instead of suffocating one with Looks are important – we can all fall baubles, tinsel and fairies! As the in love with a beautiful tree. My very years fly by, your plantings could first home here was purchased not become a forest and each tree because of its practical layout and would have a memory, be it of good certain style with lovely views. We or bad years. Life's like that. bought it, primarily, because it had the most beautiful ancient olive tree This being the planting season, one shading the patio – it was love at of the questions we are most asked first sight for me, fresh from England is for suitable trees for a given and the tree never gave me reason situation – and it can be tricky, so do to regret that decision! There are seek proper advice. Trees are so such a large range of trees available long-lived and important to our lives to us that it's possible to combine and surroundings that correct looks with practicality and plant positioning is vital. wisely, if you know what you're doing. To help you, here are a few Many of you will not remember the tree ideas for specific positions, open-air swimming pool in Cómpeta sticking to ornamentals, apart from – not the hotel pool or the municipal citrus, which are multi-purpose. pool by the school - this one was, more or less, where the new car Windbreak/shelter trees and trees park is now. fine feathery foliage that filters the wind and a froth of pink flowers in springtime. A good pioneer planting as it fills out quickly on very lean pickings! Schinus molle, or false pepper tree, is another quick grower, happy on poor soils. Evergreen, it weeps romantically down to the ground and its white flowers are followed by cascading strings of pink berries which can be used as a peppercorn substitute. Very aggressive rooting, it's great for binding soil together but not one you'd want by any sort of structure. Betula alba, white birch, and betula pendula, silver birch, are elegant and beautiful and, in this area, rarely planted. Ghostly white and dancing in the moonlight, they were traditionally planted to ward off evil spirits. Another platinised planting is the Arizona cypress, cupressus Arizonica. Like a towering silvery Christmas tree, it is very drought resistant. And, if you want some stronger colouring, try metrosideros excelsa (either as a shrub or tree). Its olive green tough leaves blend well into the campo colouration but in summer it will erupt into red pompom like flowers. Trees to give privacy/block a bad view: One of the first priorities in these cases is speed of growth – if you've something to hide, you want to do it

quickly. Schinus molle, as detailed above, with its big head of foliage is a natural and the large and varied mimosa family, or acacias, are great for their speed of growth too. Evergreen with many differing leaf forms and their typical yellow powder-puff scented flowers, don´t overwater them and they will then grow harder and more windresistant. If you need something skinny – maybe to hide a pylon – the Italian cypresses, cupressus sempervirens, are naturals piercing blue skylines with their vertical form. Trees that are good near pools: In this situation cleanliness is tantamount, so evergreen is almost essential though, if you cover your pool during the colder months you may be ok with leaf drop. Some trees, although evergreen, are incredibly messy – like mimosas. This is where citrus are brilliant. They are evergreen and, with their shiny dark green leaves, white heavily-scented flowers and stunning fruits, they are incredibly ornamental. Another quick-growing and nice evergreen is the Norfolk Island hibiscus or lagunaria patersonii. It has olive-green leaves, more silvered underneath and pale pink hibiscus-like flowers through late spring and summer. Its only downside is that the seedcases are lined with irritant hairs which protect the seeds, so take care not to handle them. If you've a sheltered poolside setting, the deciduous frangipane might suit. It will lose its leaves but they are big so not too much problem to collect up and its waxy perfumed flowers are stunningly beautiful. Small trees for patios: Citrus and lagunaria patersonii, as above, and lagerstroemia indica or crepe myrtle tree. This makes an extremely pretty deciduous tree with good autumn colours and ruffled crepe-paper-like springtime flowers in soft shades of pink, lilac and white. If you've patience, arbutus unedo or strawberry tree is very pretty too with dark green evergreen leaves, clusters of scented white bell-like flowers and red strawberry-

like fruits which are edible if somewhat unpalatable; they are however used in liqueurs. Mature trees develop lovely peeling caramel-coloured bark too. Best shade trees: Four deciduous trees that will give great summer shade but drop their leaves in winter to allow the sunshine through. Albizia julibrissin, the silk tree, has ferny, far-reaching branches with pink powder-puff flowers in late spring. Melia azedarach, or Persian lilac, has deep-green filigreed leaves and scented lilac springtime flowers followed by clusters of honeycoloured berries (poisonous) which dangle on the bare-branches. Tipuana tipu, the tipu tree, bears yellow flowers and has one of the biggest canopies; tecoma stans is another yellow with dangling bells of golden flowers – tough and quick.

the most beautiful trees with superelegant lacy leaves and striking scarlet and yellow flowers. Unusual leaf colour: One of the best for fiery autumnal colour is liquidambar styraciflua, the sweetgum. Or try the slow-growing but majestic ginkgo biloba, maidenhair tree with its lovely honeyed colouration in autumn. Plummy leaf colour makes for a great contrast tree. Two of the best are the ornamental plum, prunus cerasifera, with its lovely pink springtime flowers and the dark burgundy leaves of cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy.

Large leaves: Banana and the banana look-alike, but tougher, strelitzia Nicolai, the giant bird of paradise plant give a touch of exoticism. Catalpa bignonioides, the Indian bean tree has huge heart-shaped leaves (rather like the paulownia described Spectacular lookers: above) and scented white flowers The blue-lilac clouds of jacaranda flowers are everyone's favourite and with purple and yellow striations. More sheltered still – go for the flamboyant tree – its common name says it all! Botanically delonix regia, it is widely regarded as one of
