Happy Christmas and all the best for 2020 from the cyclemalaga.com team

Editors Note... Last month my husband and I visited Cuba for the first time. It was a special holiday to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We went without our 16-year-old twins and this was made possible by my parents volunteering to come and stay at our house and keep an eye on them, not to mention taking them to their various activities and to meet their friends. This 10-day holiday wouldn't have been possible without this lovely offer, so I want to take this opportunity to thank them. Also, many of our wonderful advertisers sent their adverts a few days early in order for us to meet an earlier deadline. This enabled us to get away for a decent length of time so we are equally grateful to you for this too.

paniards do not have a good level of English. In fact, surveys from the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, and a report from the foreign language company, Education First, place Spain close to the bottom of the ladder compared to the rest of Europe when it comes to English proficiency. According to experts, the poor result is explained in part by the size of Spain, its relatively low GDP per capita and the number of people who speak Spanish worldwide. Unlike other countries, the number of Spaniards who can speak English has scarcely changed in the last 10 years. And Spaniards in the 25-34 age bracket level have been left far behind their peers in Greece, Portugal and Italy, which had similarly low rates of English speakers 10 years ago. The 2019 English Proficiency Index places Spain in 25th place out of a total of 33 EU countries and 35th in the world, with no improvement noted since last year. The international ranking, drawn up by Education First, a company founded in Sweden in 1965 which publishes the index annually, was based on the results of 2.3 million exams in

TRADITIONAL SPANISH GAMES

Cards & Childrens Games

I

n history there have been famous games shared by people in many different parts of the world. However, Spain’s traditional games have entertained children since long before these games became popular. Spain is a country rich in traditions and boasts a variety of typical games. Spain even has its own deck of cards called the baraja española that dates back to the 14th century. Some popular Spanish games played with the Spanish deck of cards are: Mus: Originally from the Basque Country, Mus is probably the most played card game in Spain. Two 2player teams compete to win tricks. Siete y Media: Seven and a Half is a Spanish game with Italian origins. It is similar to Black Jack. Tute: Tute is a popular trick-taking card game in Spain that features trump cards and is played by 4 players. There are many other typical games in Spain that don’t use cards: Damas: Checkers, or draughts, is a popular board game in Spain and all over the world.

34 The Grapevine

Dominó: Dominoes, a game that uses small white rectangular tiles. Each tile represents 2 numeric values with between zero and six dots on each side. Various games can be played with dominoes. Parchís: Parchís is a popular Spanish board game that comes from the Indian game of Pachisi. Each of the four players has four pawns that must make their way around the board until reaching their safe zone. A die is used to determine moves and players “chase” and “eat” each other’s pawns, sending them back to the starting point. And, of course, there are Spanish games for kids. Chapas: Chapas is played with metal bottle caps. The caps are decorated, and a track is drawn on the ground. Players race each other to the end of the track by taking turns flicking their caps. Churro, mediamanga, mangantera: This Spanish game for children is played by two teams. One team forms a line, bending at the waist and holding onto the person in front of them, forming a long flat barrier with their backs. The other team forms a line (standing up) directly behind the barrier. One by one they must jump as far as possible onto the backs of the barrier team. They can propel

themselves forward with their hands, but once they land, they are not allowed to move. If the whole team is able to maintain their balance on top of the “barrier” then the first jumper must then touch either his/her forearm (churro), mid-arm (mediamanga), or hold both hands together (mangotero). Then, the first player of the barrier team must guess in what position his/her rival’s hand is in. If he/she guesses correctly, the teams switch roles. If not, they start over again in the same roles. Additionally, if the barrier collapses at any point in the game, they must start over as the barrier team again. If the jumping team falls, or any of their players touch the ground at any time, then the teams switch roles. Escondite: “Hide and seek” in the dark is a popular kid’s game worldwide. The players “hide” and the “seeker” finds. Gomas: A traditional activity for kids that involves a long elastic band stretched between two players who hold the band in place with their legs. The other players, step into the middle of the band to do certain jumps and choreography movements to the rhythm of singing and clapping. If an error is made, players switch places. Oca: The Game of the Goose is a traditional and fun children’s game. It is a board game with numbered spaces arranged in a spiral. The players’ pieces move based on dice-throws and face a wide variety of shortcuts and obstacles to reach the end. Peonza: Peonza, or spinning top, is a popular Spanish toy that spins around, balanced on one point. There are many types of tops and fun games for kids that can be played with the peonza.mily, even in the modern age.

5 20 ODD AND INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPAIN How Many Do You Know? 1. Liquid Gold Spain produces 43.8% of all of the world's Olive Oil. That’s quite a claim. The largest Olive Oil producing region is Andalucia, with Jaen at the epicentre of production. Liquid gold is a common term, and indeed it is. Interestingly, Italy is actually a net IMPORTER and much of your supermarket ‘Italian’ Olive Oil is actually produced here, under the smiling Spanish sun! 2. Religion A whopping 98% of the country used to be Roman Catholic. Nowadays that figure is lower, around 74%, with only 36% admit to be practising Catholics. Perhaps football is the number one religion today. 3. St George Whilst many English celebrate St George in a most lacklustre style, in Spain old Jorge is merrily lauded. If you're holidaying in Barcelona on St George’s day (23rd April) you can expect a rose or a book from your loved one, depending on your sex. I think I’d prefer the book…! Look out for the St George cross on the shirt of FC Barcelona. 4. Say That Again?

Approximately 470 million people in the world speak Spanish as their first or native language, the best reason to learn those complicated conjugations! It’s ‘imperative’ if you want to travel! Another language to influence Spain was Arabic. Note the ‘Al’ before many place names, for example Almeria, or Alicante. 5. Hola or Hello? Hola! magazine has been widely read since 1944, that endless thirst for a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous. Its sister magazine, Hello, was launched originally in 1988, and has been a favourite of the jet set ever since, and even the budget airline set, there always seems to be a copy left behind… 6. Hold the Front Page Newspapers, on the other hand, are not so widely read and few folk outside of cities or large towns will actually buy one. The local bar is a more likely spot to read the papers, usually a regional copy and of course the ubiquitous sports paper will also be there. 7. Football - Real Madrid Real Madrid, despite their constant debt and wrangling, are the richest

football club in the world. Top dollar? They’re worth €2.5 billion. Annual turnover currently stands at a cool €604 million. 8. ...and Barcelona The mighty FC Barcelona has the biggest privately owned stadium in the world, seating a mighty 99,786 and continues to be a hot spot on the tourist trail of things to see and do in the city. 9. La Rambla Staying in Barcelona, stretching for 1.2 kms La Rambla sees thousands people every day – 7 days a week. It resembles an ocean of people, constantly moving, and always entertaining. It's also the most likely place to be pick-pocketed. Here's a photo of an unusually quiet Rambla... 10. Shopping in Barcelona Portal del Ángel, a pedestrianised shopping street in the same city sees the soles of 3,000 pedestrians every hour of every day. It's also known as the most expensive street in Spain, with high rents reflecting the popularity. 11. Spanish Oscars The multi talented and handsome Javier Bardem (the BEST Bond

baddie!) is the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar. His wife, Penelope Cruz, won one for best supporting actress in the film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Bet we know what their mantelpiece looks like… 12. Quiet Please, anyone for tennis? Rafael Nadal, from Mallorca, tennis player, is naturally right handed but prefers to play his sport of choice left handed. Is it his sport of choice? Actually, he played football first – and was pretty good but gave it all up at the ripe old age of 12. Perhaps he reckoned there was more cash in the other racket. Game, set and match. 13. Neutral status Spain remained neutral during World War I and abstained during World War II under Franco. Still technically involved of course, through the efforts of the many volunteers, who fought on both sides. Spanish spy and 007 of the day Joan Pujol Garcia received the 2nd Class Iron Cross from the

Germans. He was codenamed ‘Garbo’ by the British and also received an MBE. 14. Mr Mop Back in 1956…The Spaniard Manuel Jalón Corominas invented the mop. Where is he? I dislike him already! Must be why they love mopping their floors here so much…

17. Flora and fauna There are 8,000 plant species in Spain, with 2,000 of them being indigenous. 18. Dive deeper The Spanish invented the first diving bell in 1538.

15. Give me Land, Lots of Land Spain is the least densely populated country in Europe, with plenty of wild and wonderful open space!

19. No Fairies Here Not for teeth, anyway. The much loved Tooth Fairy is a mere rodent in Spain. Lose a wobbly diente and if you’re lucky, you might get a night time visit from a mouse by the name of Ratoncito Pérez, he’ll leave you a gift under the pillow.

16. Sign Language Many gestures are used to portray feelings. Closed fingers and thumb up means a drink, little finger and index finger up with fist turned in means a wife is having an affair. Then there’s the Abanico or hand fan. Now you’re in totally different territory, be careful how you wave that thing!

20. Fiesta!! From jumping over real live babies, to hanging out in coffins. Pelting tomatoes and running with bulls..it all happens at the parties in Spain. This country is host and home to the weirdest, and most fun fiestas and festivals, more than anywhere else in the world. And…apparently there’s always one on, somewhere!

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ, SAYALONGA Home to Málaga's Best Wines?

T

here's a winery above Sayalonga – it is just off the road between the town and the Archez junction. It's called Bodegas Bentomiz and the wine they make is first class. Set up by a Dutch couple who moved to the area almost 25 years ago, they produce wines that are distinctively fresh and subtle. The range is called “Ariyanas” and includes sweet and dry, white, red and rosé. The Ariyanas wines have caught the attention of the wine world at large. Over the 15 years they've been operating commercially they have found distribution in a dozen countries and placed the wines in some 20 or so Michelin-starred restaurants. Their dry muscat (Ariyanas Seco Sobre Lías Finas) and one of their sweet muscats (Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso) won in the Sabor a Málaga competition to be named the best of their respective categories. The story of how their business

38 The Grapevine

has developed is astonishing: André and Clara started in other fields; both are self-taught and yet have achieved a professional level of expertise and excellence. Their history – along with just what wine-making in Málaga's Axarquía region involves – can be discovered at the winery. They run a daily tour and tasting from Wednesday to Sunday, all year round. Not only that, but to provide a fuller experience of the wine with food, as well as developing their love of gastronomy and André's love of cooking, their wine-salon doubles as a lunch-time restaurant, with the gourmet meals served just after the tasting at 14:00 – so you can combine tour, tasting and lunch, if you wish. Accolades have rolled in from all sides: the food is just wonderful. Indeed, the reviews of Bodegas Bentomiz on TripAdvisor and Facebook, their client photos on Instagram (#bodegasbentomiz), and press articles, all express visitors'

delight in the passion that André, Clara and their small, dedicated team, display in creating a “complete wine experience”. For special occasions they go a little further. Their “Mountain Wine & Music” summer concerts are thrilling events with live music, gourmet food and wine all enjoyed beside the winery in one of the most beautiful places in the province. Their occasional “dinner and music” evenings allow André to develop exciting new menus. And this Christmas they're offering a splendid 7-course banquet with wine – the best gastronomic celebration! After Christmas, when we're all in the doldrums they have a special JANUARY OFFER – book lunch for 4 and one wine-pairing menu (a glass with each course) is free. That's a taste of the best of Málaga, free of charge – a mustdo experience www.bodegasbentomiz.com

Mazapán Spanish marzipan is said to have been created centuries ago by the nuns of the Convent of San Clemente in Toledo. Following the Battle of las Navas de Tolosa in the year 1212, there was a devastating famine in Castile. Turrón Invented centuries ago in a small Spanish town named Jijona, Turrón de Navidad has become the classic Spanish treat of the holidays. Impressions of India in Galeria Luz de la Vida, Competa

L

ieuwke Loth who runs the galeria Luz de la Vida in Competa has spent the November month in Indi. She was invited to the 3rd Art Symposium Chitrashaala in India. The art symposium was the mean reason for Lieuwke to travel to India, but she also visited other parts of beautiful Rajasthan, like Udaipur, Pushkar and Jaisalmer. In Pushkar she celebrated with more then 1000 Indians the Camelfair and the holy full moon event. She met a beautiful Gypsy family and she made a cameltrip into the desert. She also visited Indian artists and their homes. It was her first visit in India, and it won’t be the last! Its an amazing and incredible country. You either hate it or love it, they say so. Lieuwke loves India. And for sure it brought Lieuwke a lot of new inspiration and impressions. She will process all what she has seen and experienced. And out of this travel new art is born. Feel welcome to visit the gallery to have a chat with Lieuwke and to see what she has taken from there and what she created on canvas or paper. What happens when the Sun does not shine or at night? It will instantaneously switch back to the Grid. What happens if I have a power cut? Then the system shuts down until the Grid comes on again. What happens to the electric I produce from the Sun that I don't use? You can if desired retrofit batteries to store that power if you want to use at night, this is better than being paid for the electricity you produce as you would always pay more when buying electricity than you would get selling it back to the electric company.

46 The Grapevine

you will want your Solar System to last for many years and produce the most power possible. It is our aim to have happy customers only! Read this and you will change your mind about installing Solar Electric! *Will it save me money and how long will it take to pay for itself? Yes, it will save you money, the standard unit will produce 4.6kw of electricity, with the everincreasing electricity cost to you, in around 4 – 6 years it would have paid for itself, this depends on how much power you normally use and how much the cost of electric keeps increasing. Can I feed the unused electric back into the system (Grid)? No, at the moment you cannot, the Electricity company will not allow it, however if that should change in the future the system can be programmed to feed back to the Grid.

Is this going to cost a great deal of money? It is much more affordable than many people think, the cost will vary a little depending on installation requirements. *How much room do I need and where can they go? They can go in a South, East – West orientation, spit into separate panels on a flat or sloping roof or on the ground, you need space for about 16/18 Solar panels. I have a Three Phase electric system, is that a problem? No, we have both Single and Three Phase units available. How do I know that this equipment will last? The Solar panels we use are made in Spain so designed to run with the heat we have here. The inverter creates the usable electricity are made in Germany or Holland depending on application required. are due to stop by. Children take empty cans and string them along a piece of rope. They then drag the cans around, making as much noise as possible. This custom is meant to call the attention of the Three Kings, so that they remember to leave the children presents that night.

Wacky Spanish Christmas Traditions Some You Might Know Some You Might Not!

M

any countries have their own special Christmas customs, and Spain is no exception. Perhaps you already know about the Three Kings that bring children presents or the special sweets eaten this time of year. However, there are a few wacky Spanish Christmas traditions that aren’t so well known. Read on to find out what they are! These unique Spanish Christmas traditions are a perfect way to create new holiday memories! Santa Claus is Not Coming to Town No, instead another strange man is on his way. Spanish children believe the Three Kings will bring their presents on the 6th of January, but some parts of Spain have an extra gift-giving figure that visits on Christmas Eve. In Galicia, a northwestern region of Spain, a mythical coal miner named El Apalpador feels children’s bellies to see if they’ve been eating well. Children deemed undernourished are given small, yummy treats, such as chestnuts. He may also leave a little present behind instead of food. The delicious treats are among

our favorite Spanish Christmas traditions! We sure could go for some Spanish Christmas sweets right now! Photo credit: Javier Lastras Olentzero brings the gifts on Christmas Eve in the Spanish provinces of Navarre and Basque Country. He is often depicted as being an overweight peasant, wearing farmer’s clothing and smoking a pipe. He leaves gifts for children, and only asks for some food and alcohol in return. It’s the Most Wonderful-ly Fun Time of the Year In many parts of Spain, children participate in El Aguinaldo. On Christmas day, children visit their neighbors or relatives and sing Christmas carols. In exchange for their beautiful songs, they are given sweet treats or a little bit of money. This is one of the most special Spanish Christmas traditions. Spain’s version of April Fools Day falls on December 28. Spaniards call this El Día de los Inocentes (the Day of the Innocents). Pranks are generally harmless. The most popular prank is to stick a drawing of a stick figure on someone’s back. In the beachside city of Cádiz, Spanish children take part in El Arrastre (The Drag) on January 5, the day before the Three Kings

Rockin’ Around the Christmas…Log? In the Spanish east coast region of Catalonia, children receive presents from a pooping log. Known as Tió de Nadal, or Christmas Log, this smiling figure becomes part of the family during the holiday season. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Catalonian families feed Tió de Nadal little treats every day, and cover him with a blanket each night to keep him warm. On Christmas Eve, children beat Tió de Nadal with sticks to help him poop out presents. Instead of individual presents, he usually poops out small treats, like nuts and candies, that are meant to be shared by everyone. The Tió de Nadal is one of our favorite wacky Spanish Christmas traditions! Catalonia is the birthplace of another pooping Christmas character, El Caganer or The Crapper. He is often shown as a peasant, squatting down over a large pile of poop. El Caganer is usually placed in the Belen, an elaborate Nativity scene that most Spanish households display. There are various explanations for his inclusion in the otherwise holy scene, but the most widely accepted reason is simply that it’s funny. In modern times, the figure can be made to look like politicians, famous actors or other pop culture icons. It’s certainly one of the most humorous Spanish Christmas traditions!

CHRISTMAS INFORMATION FOR COMPETA & MALAGA Josephine Drew Reports!

I

t's December and the busiest month for Public holidays. The 6th the 8th, and the 25th.. Starting on the 9th is 'semana de mayor', so there maybe activities in the village for the older inhabitants. Normally on the first Saturday of December there is a Christmas market in the Plaza. Another activity is to watch the Christmas lights being put up by the workmen, this can fill a couple of hours sitting on a bench outside the church. We used to have a huge tree where the

58 The Grapevine

Taperia is. They would dig up the concrete, fix an enormous fir tree in concrete and decorate it! That was not so long ago. Once when there was snow on the snow-line, over night a snowman appeared complete with a carrot for a nose. Someone must have brought the snow down in their truck. Then there is the switching on of the lights, which is usually advertised on the Town hall phone app, (Competa Informa) or on the back page of The Grapevine or Voz de Competa from Town Hall. Then comes the discussion during coffee as to

whether they are new lights this year, or the old ones, 'not as good as other villages' can be heard, or 'they are looking tatty', or 'not as good as the coastal ones'. Forgetting its a village of only approx 4000 or so inhabitants, who pay into the system. But its our lights, and our village, complete with a Belen (Nativity Scene) in the Town Hall. It may not be as sophisticated as the town ones, but its ours. Also there is the much looked forward to Christmas afternoon for the over sixty-fives which is a wonderful afternoon, (and for the

past two years in the refurbished 'knicker factory'), with food and drinks, either soft or alcohol, speeches about reaching old age and certificates handed out to those who have reached sixtyfive, and then you can detect the mumbles of 'Oh, thought he was younger/older'. There is entertainment, sometimes local and sometimes professional, and dancing, and everyone is in their finery. The ladies in tight shoes, with a dab of make-up and immaculate lacquered hair, the men in nice cardigans, with hair slicked down. The men get together and chat, (that way their wives cant see how much wine they are drinking), the ladies stick together and eat, normally drinking soft drinks. I and a few others sit with the Spanish villagers, and they welcome it. When we leave we all get a gift, and it ends when the bell rings for Mass. If over sixtyfive you need to get your name on the list, if its your year for a certificate, normally an invitation gets sent! If you are of the right age but your partner isn’t, it doesn’t matter they can accompany you!

Calle Granada has arches for the first time, Calle Jan Juan (parallel to Calle Nueva) and Calle Carcer (the street on the way to the Cervantes theatre) have a display, and look for four giant trees this year. Plaza de la Marina has lights which change colour, and in Plaza de la Constitucion you can go 'inside' the tree this year. (the Plaza at the end of Larios) Plaza del Obispo looks magical next to the lit up Cathedral, and also Calle Alcazabilla, just in front of the Roman Amphitheatre. Over in Huelin Park, and the Paseo de Parque there is a long stretch of lights to wander along. (Near La Termica).

on the bus you require. There will be a lot of people milling round the stop looking confused, so when you see the bus, push your way forward waving your ticket. Don’t be British and say 'after you, no, after you'. Many are waiting for a ruta bus anyway, and its not always clear on the front of the bus, (sometimes directo and ruta come together) so waving the ticket at the driver will get you a yes or a no, your bus or not! Another reason for this organised chaos is that some will have purchased returns at the start of their journey but not had them stamped with a time at the ticket office. That's why I didn’t suggest getting a return at Torre. Another way to see the lights is to stop overnight.

Sometimes there is a trip with Competa Bus sl to for the lights, advertised on their F.B. page, and How to get there is the annual dilemma because the bus leaves a trip for the pensioners run by the village. Last year we had an Malaga for Canillas at 18.30, except for the Sunday bus which extra trip after Christmas to see two wonderful Belens and we had leaves at 20.15. a meal in an hotel together with If you have a car don’t try to drive the pensioners from Corumbella, and Sayalonga and another in and park, its best to drive to Torre del Mar and catch a directo village. A SPANISH CHRISTMAS MENU Celebrate It Like The Locals

I

n Spain Christmas Eve is called La Noche Buena or The Good Night and in Spain it is celebrated with a large family feast that is eaten late in the evening and lasts a couple hours. Some families attend midnight mass before or after, although many families are still finishing dinner around the table at midnight! Christmas Eve is a time for celebrating in neighbourhood bars and taverns and around the table with family and friends, not a time for gift exchanges or Santa Claus. That must wait until January 6th, which is Epiphany, a religious holiday. Here is a menu for Christmas Eve dinner, Spanish-style. It has several courses and includes tapas or appetizers, as well as dessert and coffee or after-dinner drinks. None of the recipes are terribly difficult to prepare and you certainly do not have to use all of them. Pick and choose what you like and add some Spanish flavour to your Christmas table! TAPAS Artichokes with clams: Artichokes are a popular vegetable in Spain, especially

fresh from the market. They are often served sautéed with ham or stuffed with white sauce and ham or meat, etc. Sometimes served cold, they combine well with anchovies and piquillo peppers, or with salmon and capers, or tuna fish with a good olive oil. Gambas a la plancha (Pan-grilled shrimp): Spaniards love to eat grilled shrimp at the counter of a good tapas bar while sipping a glass of chilled fino sherry or cold beer. The bars are often crowded, leaving little or no space for proper eating, and I find it fascinating to watch the locals skillfully manage to eat shrimp with one hand while holding a drink in the other. Champiñones al ajillo: Few tapas taste more Spanish than champiñones al ajillo (ajillo mushrooms), dripping with olive oil, garlic and dry Spanish Sherry. Prawn and Bacon Brochettes: The Spanish love bacon, which we cure and air-dry in the same way as our famous jamon. This combination of prawns and bacon is inspired and very popular, and can be found at most Tapas bar, as well as in many banquets and

receptions. It is an ideal treat for your guests when having a party at home! Smoked Fish and Fruit Pintxos: Smoked fish and fresh fruit make a perfect match when combined in this recipe and served as an appetizer. Smoked salmon is now ubiquitous in Spain, particularly in the cities. Less evidence is traditional bacalao (salt cod), for which smoked mackerel is a substitute here. STARTERS Escudella means "bowl," and in Catalonia it is the name of a big stew-soup, escudella i carn d'olla, usually made for Christmas. The rustic taste of this stew is evident in the bones and feet, whose gelatin give such an unctuousness to the dish, and in the rough vegetables such as cabbage and turnips that were so common in the mountains and hills. Cocido Madrileño: As happens with Escudella (see above), this recipe can make a whole meal by its own, you can eat the soup as a starter, and then the meat, or save the meat for the following day!

Marmitako: Marmita translates as 'pot' or 'casserole' in Basque, while the suffix ko is the genitive case, so that marmitako literally means 'from the pot'. Of course, just about everything in Basque cooking comes 'from the pot', but only this venerable dish goes by that name.

THE CHRISTMAS ROSE CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH OF VIVEROS FLORENA, CĂ“MPETA

O

f all the flowers associated with Christmas, the Christmas rose is the most delicate and beautiful, as ephemeral as the fairy on top of the Christmas tree. But, like the fairy that returns each year to crown the tree, so does the Christmas rose, breaking through soil softened by rains and cooler conditions to bring delight and cheer during the winter months. It belongs to the buttercup family (ranunculaceae) and there are about 20 species, all native to

84 The Grapevine

Eurasia. Some we would best recognise are helleborus niger, black hellebore or Christmas rose, h. orientalis, stinking hellebore or Lenten rose, h. foetidus, stinking hellebore and h. viridis, green hellebore. They are native to southern and eastern Europe where they are found in open woodland. The best planting time is now; they look delightful in pots on windowsills or patios where their cool beauty can be closely admired or let them spread in drifts under olive or almond trees. In our relatively warm winters they will flower from November through to February, clumping and

spreading to around 1m. They grow best in light to moderate shade and, whilst they will need watering initially, they do become quite drought tolerant with maturity. The fact that they disappear underground in summer saves them from the baking heat. Improve the soil with some humus, leaf mould or compost and they will (slowly) spread. Large clumps can be divided for propagation, but they perform best when left undisturbed. When really happy, they may self-seed. The large, cup-shaped white flowers that emerge from basal leaves have crowns of conspicuous yellow stamens and five large petal-like sepals. The genus name comes from the Greek; bora meaning food and helein meaning to harm in reference to the toxic leaves, stems and roots in all the family members (wear gloves when handling). The specific epithet is from the Latin niger meaning black – the roots are black. Legend tells us how the common name of Christmas rose arose. After the birth of baby Jesus, a young girl in Bethlehem visited him. When she saw all the lavish gifts being bestowed, she felt shame because she had nothing and began to cry. Where her tears splattered to the ground, a beautiful hellebore sprouted. She picked the wondrous flower and gave it to baby Jesus. Hopefully he didn’t chew on it!

The Viveros Florena Team would like to wish you all love, peace and joy. And remember, Christmas doesn´t come from a store. What if Christmas perhaps means a little bit more? Dr. Seuss. Come and join us at our Wondrous Winter Market on 4th December. We’ve more stalls than ever before with a magical range of crafts and home-made items. With a long history and a myriad of uses, it is a sad fact that, up until the 18th century, hellebore was prescribed to treat worms and other digestive issues and many children died from these preparations. The charming flowers in the gloom of winter fascinated and enchanted over the centuries and inspired many a poem. But, if you like a spooky Christmas tale, the poisonous black hellebore is also full of guile, ghoul and witchery and its history is grim and dark. Legend has it that Alexander the Great was poisoned with powdered hellebore in his wine; the ancient Gauls would dip their arrowheads in hellebore powder to be sure that their enemies would die; and the Greeks poisoned city water suppliers of their enemies with hellebore to weaken the inhabitants, making invasion easier. Pliny recorded that if an eagle saw you digging up a hellebore, you would die within a year. Witches in medieval times used powdered hellebore to summon demons and to enable them to fly! It is also said that if you toss dried and powdered hellebore flowers into the air and walk through it you will become invisible – now that could be a useful trick at Christmas time when all the frivolities get too much and you just crave a quiet corner!
