Christmas is coming! I love Christmas and even though this year we wont be spending it with our extended family we will still have a fun time with friends at one of our favourite restaurants. This means once again I don't have to cook. I can have fun with the kids when they open and play with their new gifts instead of worrying if the carrots are diced or the potatoes have been peeled. There are plenty of places to eat out on Christmas day if you are like me and prefer not to cook. However, similarly if you are unlike me there are some great places to buy your turkey and everything you need for all the trimmings to create a fabulous traditional Christmas at Home. On pages 60, 61, 62 we have a Christmas feature which might help provide you with some ideas both of where to eat, where to buy you Christmas food and also you Christmas presents.

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update
A
Spanish store chain is challenging gender stereotypes by showing boys playing with what are typically marketed as girls’ toys and vice versa. Among the gender-neutral photographs in Toy Planet’s catalogue is a sequence showing a boy in a plaid shirt putting a dummy into a baby doll’s mouth before lovingly kissing its cheek. Boys are also shown in the catalogue using push chairs while another joyfully brushes the blond locks on a hairdressing set. Models of both sexes are photographed enjoying a Bosch toy toolkit, girls ride motorcycles and play with Meccano robots and a boy uses a plastic iron. Girls are shown enjoying remote-controlled model dinosaurs and Star Wars light sabers are something both sexes can wield. Toy Planet, which has 200 stores across Spain, started to make a conscious effort to challenge gender stereotyping through pictures posted on its social media accounts. The response was so positive that last year the company decided to follow a gender-neutral policy through its entire Christmas catalogue.

unanimously deciding that both parents of a 12-year-old girl, who was found strangled to death two years ago, are guilty of her murder. The girl, named Asunta, was well known in the city of Santiago de Compostela, having been featured in the media as the first Chinese child to be adopted by Galician parents. But the life of an intelligent and lively child was cut short when her body was found on a forest trail at 1am on September 22, 2013. Asunta’s middle-class parents reported their daughter missing a few hours before she was found, but the jury agreed with prosecutors that the divorced couple had in fact conspired together to do away with their daughter and attempt to make it look like a random act of violence. Asunta’s mother, Rosario Porto, a lawyer who had served as the honorary French consul in Galicia, had long suffered from depression and told a psychiatrist in 2009 that the child “bothered her”.

man suspected of being Britain's most wanted drug trafficker has been arrested at his home on the Costa del Sol. Robert Dawes, who is wanted by authorities in connection with murders in the UK and the Netherlands, was among “several people arrested in an ongoing
operation”, a spokesman for the Civil Guard police force said on Friday. It is understood that Mr Dawes, a 44-year-old originally from Nottingham, has been held on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by a French court and that he was arrested at his villa in the resort town of Benalmádena, near Malaga. Mr Dawes was named by Dutch prosecutors in court for allegedly ordering the 2002 murder of schoolteacher Gerard Meesters, who was apparently gunned down because his sister and her friend were believed to have stolen a shipment of drugs. Mr Dawes was never formally charged or arrested in connection with the incident. Daniel Sowerby, a British citizen who has admitted that he worked for Mr Dawes, is serving a life sentence for killing Meesters but he refused to say in court who had ordered the murder. British authorities have identified what they believe to be Mr Dawes’ involvement in nine national criminal investigations into largescale drug shipments.

former Spanish mayor has been accused of accepting a luxury-brand handbag from a businessman as a bribe in connection with a corruption network affecting the country's ruling political party. Ana Hermoso will go on trial for accepting a bag from Jesús Calvo Soria before pledging her vote while a councillor in a censure motion against the Socialist mayor of Bormujos, a town near Seville. Mr Calvo is accused of money laundering, tax fraud, influence peddling and accepting bribes in the Gürtel case, a sprawling investigation into businessmen and officials from the Popular Party (PP) over systematic payments of kickbacks for public contracts.A Spanish court decided there was sufficient evidence to put the councillor, who would later become mayor herself, on trial for accepting a bribe in the form of a Loewe handbag. She denied the charge.

9. Greenland Tradition: Rotting bird feast The hardy folk in the Arctic Circle tuck into some unusual dishes. Kiviak is decomposed bird that has been wrapped in sealskin and buried under a stone for several months. They also feast on mattak, slices of raw whale skin.
CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD How Different Countries Celebrate The Festive Season 1. Serbia Tradition: Tying up mum and dad Here it's not tradition to give presents at Christmas, but on the Sundays before. Two Sundays before 25 December, the children tie up their mum. She then has to pay a ransom in the form of gifts to be freed. The following Sunday the same happens with dad.
5. Scandinavia Tradition: Porridge instead of cookies and carrots Across the region a gnome like character - called Tomte in Sweden and Nisse in Norway - is believed to protect barns and brings presents too. Every Christmas the children leave a bowl of porridge out for him.
2. Germany Tradition: Santa's spooky helper As a part of celebrations in Germany as well as Austria and some parts of Switzerland, St Nikolaus (the saint on whom many countries base Santa Claus) is accompanied by a scary devil-like character as a warning to children no to be bad. In France there's a similar figure called La Pere Fouettard.
6. Spain Tradition: A different sort of Christmas log In the region of Catalonia traditional Nativity scenes get a cheeky addition in the form of a character called the 'caganer'. And there's no polite way to say this – the figure is squatting as if going to the toilet. Sometimes they are shepherds, but can even be footballers or politicians.
3. Italy Tradition: Presents on a broomstick A good witch called La Befana delivers children's presents on January 6th using a broomstick rather than a sleigh. But if you've been bad – expect lumps of coal.
7. Australia Tradition: Rudolph the red nosed Kangaroo Of course Down Under Christmas falls in summer. There tradition has it that Father Christmas swaps his reindeer for 'six white boomers' or kangaroos. It's also traditional to enjoy a barbecue on the beach on the big day.
4. Netherlands Tradition: Sinterklaas and Black Peter In Holland Santa Claus is called Sinterklaas. He doesn't live at the North Pole, but in sunny Spain and arrives by steamboat with a helper called Black Peter rather than an elf.
10 The Grapevine
8. India Tradition: Decorating mango trees For Christians on the subcontinent fir trees aren't common. Instead mango trees are often decorated instead and mango leaves used to brighten up homes.
10. Ukraine Tradition: Spider webs on the tree It may sound more like a Halloween tradition than a Christmas one but Ukrainians decorate their Christmas trees with spider webs. Legend says that a magic spider once visited a poor family at Christmas and turned the webs in their home into gold and silver. 11. Bulgaria Tradition: Stick patting One of the Christmas traditions is koleduvane involving boys singing carols outside neighbours' houses then patting them on the back with decorated sticks. 12. Greece Tradition: Basil and burning shoes Basil is wrapped around a cross and used to sprinkle holy water around the house to ward off mischief making goblins called killantzaroi. It's also traditional to burn old shoes for good luck in the following year. .
13. Venezuela Tradition: Roller-skating to Church In the capital, Caracas, roads are closed off so that locals can blade to morning mass – they even tie pieces of string and dangle them out of the window so, if they oversleep, passers-by will be able to tug on the string and wake them up. 14. Brazil Tradition: Presents in shoes Brazilians celebrate the legend that animals gain the power of speech on Christmas night while children here get their presents in their shoes rather than stockings

TORROX MIGAS FESTIVAL Last Sunday before Christmas
Y
ou might not expect ingredients for the perfect Christmas party to include 2000 kilos of flour, 500 litres of olive oil and 3000 litres of sweet Moscatel wine, but that´s exactly what´s required to cater for the 40,000 guests who visit the annual Migas Festival in the village of Torrox. Many towns and cities throughout the world have unique dishes that encompass their overall culture and tradition. Migas is a traditional Andalucían peasant dish often made from breadcrumbs, although in Torrox the migas are made with flour. Normally served as an accompaniment to a main dish, of fried fish for instance, migas comprises of fried bread crumbs liberally laced with garlic, and may also contain small pieces of
14 The Grapevine
chorizo, ham or peppers. Each year, on the last Sunday before Christmas, this gastronomic festival which has been declared of “National Tourist Interest” by the Junta de Andalucía, will serve more than 40,000 visitors. Whoever said “there is no such thing as a free lunch”, obviously had never visited Torrox pueblo! From early in the morning, teams of cooks prepare the migas for free distribution to local residents and visitors to the festival. The ringing of a bell is the signal for everyone to come and collect their plate of migas, which is served with a glass of local wine and an “arriera” salad (made with oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and olives) to accompany the meal.
There is plenty to do during a day at the Migas festival because as well as free food and drink there are many craft stalls, traders selling fine cheeses, chorizo, cakes, nuts and sweets, the opportunity to enjoy guided walks through the village, and street artists, as well as choirs and local dance groups, who all help to create a wonderful festive atmosphere. Of course, in true Spanish tradition, this is just another excuse for a party, but on a warm, sunny December day, why would you not pursue that with some vigor? ACTION FOR ANIMALS
We also help with vet bills for low-income pet owners to enable them to obtain medical care for their sick or injured pets. We never want an animal to be put to sleep or suffer needlessly because their owners can't afford treatment, expensive surgery or vet visits. We are dedicated to making sure that no pet has to be euthanized or go without treatment for illness or injury simply because their owner is financially challenged.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
A
s 2015 draws to a close, we'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and say a huge thank you all for your support throughout the year. We'd also like to take the opportunity to give you a little more information about our work. Here's our mission statement: “Action for Animals is a non-profit association registered in Spain with the Junta de Andalucia (number 8399). We spay, neuter and provide ongoing care for local feral cat populations and offer financial assistance for pet owners who cannot afford to have their pets spayed or neutered. We provide financial assistance for low-income pet owners, helping with vets bills, to enable them to obtain medical care for their sick or injured pets. We are dedicated to insure that no pet has to suffer or be euthanised simply because their owner is financially challenged. We do not have a shelter, but we occasionally rescue and foster animals when we have foster families available and we help to find homes whenever we can.” We started our neutering programme in Cómpeta in 2008, in order to stabilise the number of feral cats on our streets. Stray
18 The Grapevine
cats are humanely trapped, neutered and returned to the streets where we continue to feed them and monitor their health, taking them for veterinary treatment whenever needed. We've been very successful with this project, although our work is ongoing and we continue to neuter new strays as they appear. Many regular visitors and long-term residents in the village can testify to the fact that our project works, as the numbers of feral cats in the street today are far fewer than they ever were in previous years. We've already extended our trap, neuter and return programme to other neighbouring villages and are currently financing projects in Sayalonga, Torrox and the Loma de Archez area in Cómpeta. But it's not just stray cats that contribute to the numbers of unwanted animals on our streets. Many times we've found kittens and puppies abandoned in the rubbish bins of our village. In order to stop this from happening, we actively encourage all pet owners to neuter their pets and provide financial support for them to do so. It's extremely gratifying to see so many people these days becoming aware of the benefits of neutering their animals and taking up our offer of providing financial help for what can be a costly operation here in Spain.
We're not a rescue organisation, this was not something we ever set out to do – as there are many other excellent organisations in the Axarquia involved in rescue and rehoming. We don't have the resources to rescue animals and don't have a shelter, but we'll always help when we can and have had many successes over the years. Every month our vet bills come in at around 2000€ and on top of that we have shop rent to pay, food for the street cats and fostered animals, accountants fees, utility bills and taxes. We rely on the donations of individuals and the support of our local community to help us raise funds via our charity shop and fund raising events. Without your support, none of our work would be possible. So, on behalf of all the animals, we send you a heartfelt thanks and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! including The Dorchester, London and Savini, Milan. On their return to Spain they initially rented a place in Competa and Henning worked over the summer both in the kitchen at Casa Paco and in El Cortijo Restaurante. Astrid and Henning were keen once again to open up their own eatery. However as there were already over 30 restaurants and bars in Competa they thought Sayalonga would provide the ideal prospect.
Astrid and Henning are the new owners of restaurant Que Tal and want to provide a creative and fusion Kitchen. They are not strangers to the hospitality and catering business as they originally owned a bar in Chilches. Then they moved to Gran Canaria where they owned a restaurant for 8 years. However, they felt this was long enough to live on an island and friends from Competa encouraged them to move back to the Penisula.
Finding the right location wasn't easy, the premises they eventually found was in a good condition, originally a pizza restaurant and prior to that an outlet for selling honey that the owner of the building made! All they needed to do was add their own touch, fixtures and fittings and they were good to open. Que Tal is a modern looking restaurant with a little patio outside for those warmer evenings. It's fantastic for that intimate dinner and feels exclusive with its limited number of tables of evening.
Henning is Michelin star chef in Switzerland and has a huge amount of chef experience. He has worked all over Europe

KEEP CALM AND
SELL YOUR HOME DURING 2016 SELLING PROPERTY VIA THE INTERNET DOES WORK Creative Property Marketing can save you money.
T
he internet has changed the way we buy all sorts of things - from paperback books to properties, the world has become a very small place! Nowadays, the internet is the best way to attract buyers to property for sale in Spain, making sure homes are seen by potential buyers around the world. With foreign buyers currently making up 95% of Spanish property purchases, it has never been more essential to advertise your home for sale globally. The only way to do this successfully, is to use the internet to its full potential. Expatriate run estate agencies (who deal with foreign buyers), tend to only advertise their properties for sale on Kyero & sometimes, Think Spain. However, there are so many more superb websites property can and ideally, should be advertised for

sale on. Is just one or maybe two websites good enough in these competitive times? Probably not! Reaching a weekly audience of more than 1 million potential buyers is the way forward and this can only be achieved by advertising on as many international prestigious property sales websites/portals as possible. High profile websites such as Prime Location Overseas, Zoopla Overseas, The Move Channel, Luxury Estate, Kyero and Think Spain are not cheap to advertise on and most are not available to the general public. So finding a buyer for property in Spain has, until now, been an expensive proposition. THERE IS A SOLUTION THAT WORKS - Creative Property Marketing offer private sellers the opportunity to sell their homes by
advertising them for sale on the best websites available. Offering a very affordable 12 months advertising bundle (20 websites in total) for just â‚Ź296.45 (alongside first class and professional sales and marketing support) for private sellers. At this time, no other company in Spain is known to provide this level of advertising ACCOMPANIED by full property expert support. The creation of a superb advert is included, to handling enquiries from buyers through to assistance at all times during the 12 months advertising campaign (to include help with negotiations, legal advice etc.). Please remember there is no commission to pay when the house sells! Selling property via the Internet is fast becoming the norm in the UK and Northern Europe - Creative Property Marketing now give you the same opportunity to sell your home in Spain - it's easy and you'll save thousands of Euros! This way of selling property is open to all - you don't need to be a computer expert - Creative Property Marketing do everything for you. They have sold the homes of sellers in their 80's who have never used a computer through to those who run their life through the internet. The service is open to all - there is always a way! If you visit the website of Creative Property Marketing, you'll see a step-by-step guide for sellers. All they want to do is help you sell privately during 2016 so give them a call if you need to know more. They want you to have a very Happy New Year! See advert on the opposite page. test run – we invited friends and colleagues to our 'guinea-pigs' lunch and we served some 25 guests with about 15 different dishes! They were incredibly positive: when Juan and André came out of the kitchen they gave them a standing ovation. It was wonderful.”
FANTASTIC FOOD AND WINE IN A GORGEOUS SETTING Judging from this description on TripAdvisor Bodegas Bentomiz's visitors approve their expansion into Eno-tourism!.
T
he winery has been breaking new ground since 2003. Based just above Sayalonga in a glorious location they use Málaga grapes from their own and local growers' vineyards to produce the sublime Ariyanas wines, which have been fêted across Europe, served in Michelin starred restaurants and garlanded with prizes. One wine is served daily in the tasting menus of Spain's most famous restaurant (El Celler de Can Roca), another won an ICEX “Wines from Spain” award in London, a third was awarded 96 points in Guía de Vinos Gourmet. Didn't you know that Sayalonga is home to one of the best wineries in Spain? It is run by Dutch couple André Both and Clara Verheij. They say local support – from growers, from Sayalonga's townhall, from Malaga's Diputación – has been critical to their success. But their ability to innovate, while respecting local tradition, is also fundamental. The winery itself suggests this: it is an elegant

modern building in the Bauhaus style with lots of big windows and wonderful views, but is clad in a lovely slate that looks very much like the slate in the soils here: this helps it blend in beautifully with its environment. Now Clara and André have teamed up with Juan Quintanilla, chef and owner of Restaurante Sollun in Nerja. Juan learnt the art of cooking in Marbella, Bilbao, Cuenca and Madrid, working in Michelin starred restaurants before branching out on his own. A long-standing fan of the Ariyanas wines, Juan has designed menus with the food paired to the wines, to allow the bodega to offer visitors spectacular wine-centred lunches. And André, under Juan's tutelage has taken his lifelong passion for cooking one step further and has become the winery's chef. Each dish is freshly prepared, beautiful, elegant and tasty—and a perfect match for its wine. Open from April this year they were overwhelmed by the response. “We gave our dishes a
The winery tours and wine tastings, presented in English and Spanish, continue being popular, helped by an inclusive approach: there is a stairlift and a disabled toilet for visitors with mobility issues. Also, in spite of the adult theme of wine, children are welcomed. “We don't serve kids junk food,” warns Clara, “No hamburgers, chips and pizzas. But we do, when requested, cook them something special: simple dishes with definable ingredients, tasty and attractive – and they've worked really well. No wine though – only grape juice!” No wonder there is an ever growing international audience of visitors! The most popular service is the 'complete wine experience' including the tour and tasting as well as lunch. It seems people are really interested in learning more about modern Malaga wines and Clara and André naturally approve. “When you come to Bodegas Bentomiz, you don't just come for a meal; it is more a wine-centred gastronomic experience. Our main goal is to see visitors leave happily surprised and satisfied, sharing their experiences with others.” That explains the tours and restaurant have been busy all these months. Clara and André's eno-tourism is as high quality as their wines: something for Sayalonga, the Axarquía and Málaga to boast about. And a centre of touristic attraction for visitors from near and far. To quote another visitor's comment: “Andalusia should be proud to be home to Bodegas Bentomiz.”

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es
The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

“Yes we are, it is good for us. Would you like to have a drink at the bar until a table is free? It won't be long. Will anyone be joining you?” Gabriela asks, eager to hear his reply.
SHADES IN THE SUN An extract from Steve Taylors’ Novel based in the village of Competa
I
t's already dark when Christian arrives in Competa village. He finds a car parking space easily and as he locks the Panda, he notices the blonde and the brunette from Marja's. They are dressed in short black skirts and crisp white blouses, elegant yet approachable. They are chatting easily to passers-by, smiling and pointing towards Maria's restaurant. He had noticed the place himself when he first came in to Competa, but it had not seemed very welcoming. This evening though, Maria's Place looks as if it has been given a new lease of life. There are fairy lights strung between the railings of the terrace, the leaves of bright green plants replace the former brown stubble and Christian can see the gentle glow of table lights. The blonde comes running over to him; “How are you this evening, sir?” She stops as she recognises Christian. “I know you, don't I? I am staying at Marja's, just up the hill.” Christian smiles at her, his gentle eyes crinkling slightly at the edges. “We have seen one another briefly,” he explains. “I am staying at Casa Rosita.”

“Oh yes, just across from the finca. I remember. Are you looking for somewhere to eat this evening? Maybe you might like to try Maria's? It is a simple restaurant but the food is fantastic, I'm sure you would like it. Why don't you try?” “Well, seeing as I don't have any other plans, and I do need to eat, I will take up your suggestion. I hope it's as good as you say.” “I promise you won't be disappointed,” Krystal returns his smile. “I will be back at the restaurant in a while.” Christian makes his way across the street and up the steps to the terrace of the restaurant. At the top of the stairs, Rosie and Gabriela are greeting guests as they arrive, directing them to tables and to the bar. Gabriela watches as Christian approaches, slim-hipped and attractive in a light linen shirt and chinos. “What a handsome man,” she remarks to Rosie, but her comment goes unanswered. Gabriela steps forward to greet him: “Good evening, sir, welcome to our restaurant.” “You seem to be really busy?” responds Christian, casting his eyes over the crowded tables.
“No, just a table for one, please. My girlfriend is not here yet.” He doesn't notice the slight disappointment cross the young waitress' face at the mention of a girlfriend. He takes a seat at the bar and orders red wine. Through the door to the kitchen he spots Marja and waves. “Hi.” “Good evening, Mr Brey.” The restaurant is buzzing with life. The lazy waiters are how having to earn their keep, dashing between the bar and tables, pouring wine, clearing empty glasses and filling jugs with fresh water. Everyone is busy. Maria appears out of the kitchen, her arms laden with steaming plates of food. As she comes out of the swing doors, Gabriela is going in to collect more dishes. “There is one more,” says Gabriela as she passes her mother. “I can't manage it, hold on.” Christian realises the problem and is happy to help. “Shall I get it for you? I'm not doing anything sitting here.” Gabriela points to the plate of tapas, grateful for his offer. “It's just that one. The tortilla, for table 4. Over in the corner, the young couple. Thank you.” Christian takes the warm tortilla to the diners, noticing on his return to the bar that the adjoining table have finished their starters. He leans in politely to clear the used plates, stacking them expertly on his forearm. That part-time Uni job was all coming back to him now. From across the restaurant, Marja sees how easily and confidently Christian deals with the customers, no hint of arrogance about him at all. He has great

charm, good looks and impeccable manners. She decides to make use of his skills. Grabbing an order pad she pushes it into his hand and passes him a pen. “There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there might be a free dinner,” she laughs. Before long, the young Englishman is making himself extremely useful, running about from table to table, delivering plates, clearing away, and taking drinks. By this time, Krystal and Esther have arrived, and it's all hands on deck. Christian spots a young couple come in and sit at the bar to wait for a free table. Carly-Ann and Wayne are on their honeymoon and seem slightly ill-at-ease. Christian makes his way across to welcome them. “Good evening, I can show you to your table now.” He pulls out the chairs for the couple and hands them each a menu. Wayne tries hard to decipher the
listings. “Not sure I am going to like this much, babe,” he remarks to his partner. “I don't know what half this stuff is. What's calamari when it's at home?” His new wife offers to help, scanning the menu looking for something resembling prawn cocktail. Returning a few minutes later, Christian notices that they are still searching the menu, running their fingers carefully along the description of each dish, reading out phrases here and there. “Can I help you at all?” he asks. “Are you ready to order?” Carly-Ann looks at him beseechingly. “Well, we are having a few problems choosing. There, er, is so much on 'ere. We were looking for, prawn cocktail. It's our 'oneymoon, you see, and we really wanted summat special. All the chicken seems to have sauce and stuff on it.” “Honeymoon? Congratulations.
Certainly you must have something special, I'll see what the chef can do.” Christian promises. “Can I get you something to drink?” “The fizzy stuff.” says Wayne. “Lambretta?” Christian has no hint of a smile as he takes their order. “Lambrusco, sir, certainly. That is white and fizzy, but I think we may have something which you might enjoy even more. Leave it to me.” He heads to the bar to put a bottle of cava on ice before returning to Carly-Ann and Wayne's table a few minutes later. He sets down a small dish of local olives and bread. Carly-Ann pokes the olives suspiciously with a cocktail stick. “What are those green things, are they cooked? Have they got pips in?” she wonders.

National Finals Rodeo, Las Vegas
WHERE TO GO IN DECEMBER This is an excerpt from Lonely Planet's A Year of Festivals. National Finals Rodeo Location: Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas, USA Dates: Starts in the first full week of December It could be argued that Las Vegas is a never-ending festival, a glorified fairground where the lights never go down. But there are moments when even Vegas outshines itself, and the 10-day National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is prime among them. Read more. Quema del Diablo (Burning of the Devil) Antigua - Arco Location: Guatemala City and Antigua, Guatemala

Date: 7 December If you want some brownie points ahead of Christmas, there are few better ways than to help the Guatemalans burn the devil. In local traditions, the devil lurks in the corners of homes, beneath beds and among garbage. Each year, as a prelude to Christmas, homes are cleaned and on 7 December the rubbish is collected in the streets. Often, an effigy of the devil is thrown on top, just to really sort him out. Santarun Location: Newtown, Wales Date: First or second Sunday in December
What better way to start the silly season than doing something really stupid in a Santa suit while trying to earn a place in Guinness Book of Records. On the Santarun, thousands of people slap on a jolly-red Santa suit and run a 7.2km course around the Powys town. Klausjagen (Chasing the Claus) Location: K端ssnacht, Switzerland Date: 5 December Cast aside any preconceptions about the restrained nature of the Swiss as you watch them beat up on a fellow named Santa Claus. On the eve of St Nicholas Day, the good folk of K端ssnacht, on the

northern shores of Lake Lucerne, drag out their whips and cow bells for one of the country’s more unusual parades. Mevlâna Festival (Whirling Dervishes Festival) Location: Sports stadium, Konya, Turkey Dates: 10–17 December In the Islamic world the 13thcentury Sufipoet Celaleddin Rumi, or Mevlâna (Our Guide), is all but considered a saint. One of the world’s great mystic philosophers, his poetry and religious writings are among the most beloved and respected in Islam and beyond. L’escalade, Geneva Location: Geneva, Switzerland Date: 11 December If you want a decent excuse to eat chocolate before Christmas, Geneva has come up with it. At l’Escalade, the city’s largest festival, marzipan-filled marmites en chocolat (chocolate cauldrons) are smashed and the sweet pieces are gathered up and devoured. Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe) Location: Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Mexico City, Mexico Date: 12 December Our Lady of Guadalupe (or the Virgin Mary) is no ordinary heavenly being. In 1531 she appeared four times to an indigenous Christian convert, Juan Diego, on Cerro del Tepeyac (Tepeyac Hill). Over the centuries she’s been credited with all manner of miracles, and has become Mexico’s patron saint. Chaumos Location: Kalasha valleys, Pakistan Dates: 10 days around the winter solstice. By the middle of December in the three Kalasha valleys of Rumbur, Bumboret and Birir, the crops have been stored for the winter and it’s time to celebrate. The

largest festival for the Kalasha people, who stubbornly resist the Islamic religion that surrounds them, it’s a time of visiting, feasting and dancing. Chriskindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) Location: Hauptmarkt, Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany Dates: Friday before Advent Sunday to 24 December In Germany ’tis the season to be shopping. Across the country, Christmas markets spring up throughout the month leading up to the big day. Most famous among them is the Nuremberg market, filling the city’s main square with almost 200 stalls and drawing in around two million people. Procession de San Lázaro Location: Santuario de San Lázaro, El Rincón, Cuba Date: 17 December For a pilgrimage worth bloodying your knees to see, head for El Rincón on the outskirts of Havana to watch (or join) up to 50,000 faithful descend en masse on the venerated shrine of Lazarus, a saint known for his ministrations to lepers and the poor. Dewgal (Crossing of the Cattle) Location: Diafarabé, Mali Dates: Late December or early January; dates aren’t set until November All across central Mali from November, visitors will see Fula herders and their vast herds closing in on the Niger River, readying themselves for one of West Africa’s most picturesque annual rituals. When the river levels are just right, the town of Diafarabé is transformed into a hive of activity, as hundreds of thousands of cows are driven southwards and across the Niger River to greener pastures. Fiesta de Santo Tomás (Feast of St Thomas) Location: Town plaza, Chichicastenango, Guatemala Dates: 13–21 December
The highland city of Chichicastenango (Chichi) celebrates its patron saint in a rather death-defying way. For a week festivities are limited to typical festival events – parades, traditional dances, fireworks – but on 21 December (St Thomas’ Day) things look up, literally. On this day, wooden poles as high as 30m are raised in the plaza beside the Iglesia de Santo Tomás and the dance of the palo volador (flying pole) begins. Hogmanay (New Year) Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Dates: 29 December–1 January For Scots, the New Year has always been a more important celebration than Christmas, and largely they’ve managed to convince the world of the same through the enormous Hogmanay celebrations that engulf Edinburgh. Festival of the Sahara Location: Douz, Tunisia Dates: 23–27 December While the Christian world is occupied with snowy, Christmasy scenes, Saharan nomads flock to Douz, Tunisia’s gateway to the mighty desert, for a celebration of their culture. The sandy town hosts camel races, hunting for rabbits with greyhound-like Saluki dogs, and fantasias. Reveillon (New Year’s Eve) Location: Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Date: 31 December The second best way to see in the New Year is to join the party on Rio’s mighty Copacabana beach, where the spiritual and the secular come together for one amazing night. Rio’s biggest holiday after its spectacular and rowdy Carnaval sees around two million people pack the sands to welcome in the New Year – you won’t be laying out a towel and throwing a Frisbee on Copacabana beach this night

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Almonds, Turrón and Marzipan – Christmas Delights.
T
he arrival of the festive season in Spain is marked by the almond – forget Christmas trees, it is the almond that reigns supreme! Look on any shop shelf and you´ll see it packed in boxes – soft, crunchy, with raisins, chocolate, alcohol, you name it, you´ll find it in the guise of turrón and marzipan. These typical products replace mince pies in every Spanish home and many a foreign one too; certainly in our home, it takes pride of place. Spain is the biggest producer of these almond-based confectionaries and production is at a maximum from September, just after the nuts are harvested, through until the Christmas period. Apart from the vast home market, countries as far-flung as Japan, Europe (particularly the sweet-toothed Germans who take 30% of the external market), Cuba and much of South America eagerly await the arrival of Spanish turrón! 55% of sales are destined for these countries; the remainder is for the home market. Almond trees are believed to have originated in the hot, almost desert lands of Central Asia, and the elaboration of sweets using
84 The Grapevine
the nuts goes back many centuries in Europe. The ancient Greeks claimed that they were the first to make this wonderful sweet paste with honey and various dried fruits. Their Olympiads used them as a quick energy booster – before the days of drugs! However, any Spaniard will tell you that they were making turrón long before that based around the town of Sexona (now known as Jijona – you know that famous make) and these little bites of sweetness were introduced by the Moors. The history of marzipan is a little hazier, though its invention is claimed by the nuns of the San Clemente convent in Toledo during the 13th century. Nowadays in Spain there are around 100 varieties of almond but 5 are principally used: Marcona: considered the King of the almonds. It is very productive and of high quality with a rounded nut. The tree is moderately vigorous and flowers early in the season. Flowers white, flushed with pink. It is the variety that fetches best prices being the most in demand by sweet producers. It is toasted to take on the desired golden colour for turrón, both soft and hard. It is the base of regional
quality controls and denominations for both turrón and marzipan. Largueta: Gives a pointed, somewhat flattened nut with medium/high crops. The flowering is early and harvesting fairly late. Trees are of medium vigour and very twiggy. Flowers white, flushed with pink. Principally used for snacks – salted nuts, sweet caramelized almonds and praline chocolates. Planeta: An early flowerer on a vigorous tree of medium size. An early and big producer. Flowers pink. Comunas/Valencias: Flowers generally white. Mallorca: Flowers generally white. Three of these are native Spanish varieties – Marcona, Largueta and Planeta. Valencias and Mallorca are not strictly separate varieties; they are generic names from the area in which they are grown and are conglomerates of diverse botanical varieties. There are also 3 other varieties that you will commonly see, though not commercially as popular as the above. Ferraduel: A French variety, late
To advertise call 637 028 873
flowering and very productive, harvesting mid/late season. The nuts are flat and wide. Trees are moderately vigorous and large. White flowers. Ferragnes: A French variety, very vigorous with many flowers and harvesting mid-season. The nut is long, rounded in the centre. White flowers. Guara: A Spanish variety of medium vigour and size, somewhat sparsely branched. Produces long nuts of medium size. Will set a good crop without cross-pollinisation and is a late flowerer; hence it is becoming very popular commercially. Flowers white, flushed pink. Two of the newest introductions are Belona and Soleta both of which have similar characteristics as Marcona but with the advantage that they are later flowering. This means that the flowers are less likely to get frosted in cold areas and there should be more bees around for pollinisation – a factor that is becoming increasingly important. The almond tree is robust and quite long-lived; in Mediterranean areas a life of 60 years or so is normal. The nut casing is hard; Californian varieties tend to be much softer. But the Spanish almond has exceptional quality because of its higher levels of oil making it juicier and softer with a more intense flavour than its counterparts. Nevertheless, the U.S. is the biggest grower of almonds, followed by Spain with some 15% of the world production. Within Spain, Andalucía is the biggest producer by far. And, studying the almond world, you notice a strange phenomenon in the last few years. Demand is outstripping production which has led to a complete reappraisal of almond thinking! The price has risen to an average of €3,30 per kilo and production is expanding. In 2013 Andalucía
To advertise call 637 028 873
produced 6,200 tonnes of almonds; a year later that figure had risen to 13,000 tonnes. And it seems likely to continue rising. I don´t know if any of you have noticed but it has become very difficult to buy an almond tree – in this province of so many! And there is a simple answer to that – commercial growers are increasing their plantings exponentially and the tree producers have been a little caught out! So supplies to Garden Centres are difficult, even nonexistent. Why this sudden surge you might ask? Well there are several reasons for this worldwide demand. The almond has begun to supersede the peanut in the world of snacks because it is a much healthier nut and super tasty too! Furthermore, recent investigations have found that eating almonds can lower the risk of diabetes by 52% and they can help prevent cancer of the colon. Some schools are encouraging their pupils to eat almonds instead of sugary snacks. Even almond oil is becoming increasingly sought after and the almond is, of course, an essential part of the muchlauded Mediterranean diet. All of these factors, and others, have made the almond very fashionable. This demand is bringing about a new way of growing almonds too. Some 90% of almonds within Andalucía are grown without irrigation – it´s always been that way. But tests have shown that an irrigated almond tree can produce a hugely superior crop. Grown dry, 300 kilos can be expected per hectare; when irrigated this figure zooms up to 1000 kilos and where there are mature trees even 5000 kilos can be achievable. (source: Instituto de Investigacion y Tecnologia Agroalimentaria). The trend for the last 10 years has been to uproot stone fruits, citrus and even olives and plant with the newer varieties of almonds. Areas where almonds were grown dry
are slowly being converted to irrigation. The provinces of Sevilla, Córdoba and Huelva are where you will most note this change. Personally, my head buzzes at the thought of all that water – some 3000 cubic metres per hectare annually, it is reckoned - but this is progress after all! Or so they would have us believe. It´s certainly something to dwell on whilst savouring your turrón! We will have bare-rooted almond trees in stock by the time you read this article; then it´s up to you to decide – dry or wet?
