Where I live winter has truly set in with low temperatures and incessant winds. However, there can’t be many places where you can see the mountains with snow on and also be only 20 minutes from the coast. Probably by the time you are reading this my family and I will have driven into the mountains, to find the snow and will have built a snowman!! A few events are going on over the coming months the one I would like to especially promote is the Cudeca pop- up diners club. This is a new venture in order to raise funds for Cudeca. The first dinner with a guest chef will be held at the Alberdini Restaurant on 22nd February. More information on how to buy tickets or be a host venue can be found on page 26. We haven’t forgotten its Valentines Day this month with a couple of pages dedicated to facts and history to get you in the mood. Many places are advertising Valentines day dinners and parties so there is no excuse not to take you loved one out for the evening, (unless you have kids!). Finally well done to Maxwell and Janice Reeves who won the “Find the wine glass competition” and win a meal at Tk’s Bar & Restaurante in Torrox Costa.

after the Decree came into force, very few of them have approached their Town Halls to ask for their homes to be made legal, some of them because the Town Halls have advised them not to do so and others because the owners are not in agreement with the solutions which are being offered to them by the Junta.

E NEWS IN SPAIN News from the Axarquia

M

alaga City Hall declared two days of mourning in January after a six-yearold boy lost his life when he was run over by one of the floats in the annual ‘cabalgata’, the Three Kings parade held on January 5th. Miguel R. M. was among thousands of children who lined the streets with their families to enjoy the parade and catch a glimpse of the Three Kings who would later bring them presents. However tragedy struck when, soon after the start of the event, at around 5.30 p.m., in Plaza del General Torrijos, the boy was caught under one of the front wheels of a float, apparently while searching for sweets thrown from above.Volunteers accompanying the float, that was pulled by a four wheel drive vehicle, had managed to prevent other children from getting too close to the wheels after sweets had fallen in the gap in front of the trailer.

D

ecree 2/2012 of the Junta de Andalucía, which aims to regulate buildings which exist on land which is not classified for construction, is failing to convince the owners of illegal properties in the

6 The Grapevine

countryside of La Axarquía region. In fact, ten months after the new regulations came into force, their effect has been practically nonexistent as the majority of owners of illegal houses have not applied for them to be made legal. Nor are the local councils playing their part. Very few of them have drawn up the report on illegal settlements which will help in making the properties legal. This is a document which is required by the decree, which stipulates that in the absence of an Urban Plan the Town Halls should supply details of their future planning, to identify the places which have a high concentration of buildings on land not zoned for construction. Nor have most of the councils drawn up the regulations about minimum conditions of habitation and sanitation with which all illegal properties will have to comply. The reason for this is that many of them are waiting for the Junta to approve the guidelines which will help Town Halls to set up their general urban plans or, in the absence of that regulation, their municipal bylaws.Although there is considerable concern among the owners of illegal properties, the reality is that nearly one year

lectricity has risen by 3 per cent for millions of domestic customers, although for some - those whose contracted supply is lower than 3 kilowatts, families where all members are out of work, pensioners on the lowest income - the price has been frozen. The government is also going to penalise increases in consumption by charging more and has therefore had to eradicate the estimated monthly meter readings. There will be further increases during the year, because the tax of 7 per cent which has to be paid by the suppliers will end up being passed on to the public.

E

U citizens in Spain could face proof of income tests if they wish to reside in the country for more than three months, as the Spanish government implements what has been described as "a crackdown on migrants" as it seeks to resolve the ongoing economic crisis. As such, municipal councils, the National Police and international embassies are urging nonSpanish nationals to familiarise themselves with the new residency requirements (they can be found on many town hall and embassy websites), which have been introduced by the Spanish government.Under the new rules, EU nationals registering on the 'Registro Central de Extranjeros' (National Foreigners Register) in order to obtain residency in Spain may be required to produce evidence of "sufficient financial means to support themselves and their dependants.” Applicants may also be asked for proof of private or public healthcare insurance.

cientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the Bard and other classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-reflection. Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S Eliot and others. They then “translated” the texts into more “straightforward”, modern language and again monitored the readers’ brains as they read the words. Scans showed that the more “challenging” prose and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the more pedestrian versions.Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it “lit up” as the readers encountered unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structure.

Valentines Day Facts

M

other's day and valentine's day are the two biggest occasions on which flowers are given, Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. In Finland Valentine's Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into "Friend's day". In Slovenia, a proverb says that "St Valentine brings the keys of roots", so on February 14, plants and flowers start to grow. In some Latin American countries Valentine's Day is known as "Día del Amor y la Amistad" (Day of Love and Friendship). In Korea, if you do not receive any gift on Valentine's day then all the singles go to Korean restaurants and eat black noodles to mourn their single status. Valentine Cards ? Every year around 1 billion

Valentine cards are sent across. ? After Christmas it's a single largest seasonal card-sending occasion. ? Teachers receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts. ? Children between ages 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine's cards with teachers, classmates, and family members. Valentine Flowers/Roses Received Valentine Flowers? Well I guess you are a woman. Of the 73% of people who buy Valentine's Day flowers are men, while only 27 percent are women. A single perfect red rose framed with baby's breath is named by some florists as a "signature rose," and is the preferred choice for most for giving on Valentine's

Day, anniversaries and birthdays. The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The color red stands for strong romantic feelings making the red rose the flower of love. Cupid Cupid is a symbol of Valentine's Day. Cupid was associated with Valentine's Day because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards and gift tokens holding a bow and arrows as he is believed to use magical arrows to arouse feelings of love. Love Letters and Poems Verona, the Italian city where Shakespeare's play lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters every year sent to Juliet on Valentine's Day. The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing, around 3500 B.C. Wear your Heart on your Sleeve In the Middle Ages young men and women drew the names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned on their sleeves for one week. This was done so that it becomes easy for other people to know your true feelings. This was known as "to wear your heart on your sleeve" Valentine Gifts On February 14th wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Valentine's Day in Wales. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite Valentine decorations on

The most beautiful and incredible gift of love is the monument Taj Mahal in India. Built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife it stands as the emblem of the eternal love story. Work on the Taj Mahal began in 1634 and continued for almost 22 years and required the labor of 20,000 workers from all over India and Central Asia. In America, the pilgrims used to send confections, such as sugar wafers, marzipan, sweetmeats and sugar plums, to their affianced. Lot of value was placed on these gifts because they included what was then a rare product, sugar. After the late 1800's, beet sugar became widely used and more available, and sweet gifts continued to be cherished and enjoyed. Amongst the earliest Valentine's Day gifts were candies. The most common were chocolates in heart shaped boxes. The Valentine Heart The heart is associated to Valentine's Day as it is considered the source of all human emotions. The custom of drawing a heart shape is supposed to have come from early attempts to draw an organ that no one had seen. The symbol came on to become as a sign of love. The heart has been the most common figure of romantic love over the decades. Ancient cultures believed the human soul lived in the heart. The heart may be linked with love because the ancient Greeks believed it was the goal of Eros, known as Cupid to the Romans. Anyone shot in the heart by one of Cupid's arrows would fall hopelessly in love. Because the heart is also closely linked to love, its red color is considered as most romantic.

More Valentines Day Facts Birds Lovebirds are often associated with Valentine's Day. These lovebirds found in Africa, are brightly coloured and sit very close together with their mates, earning them their name.

Love Knots A love knot is a symbol of undying love, as its twisting loops have no beginnings or ends. In olden times, they were made of ribbon or drawn on paper to prove ones eternal love.

Doves are also part of the Valentine tradition. These birds are symbols of love and loyalty because they mate for life. A pair of doves will also share the care of all their babies.

Past Times Pope Gelasius I of Rome, declared Saint Valentine's burial day as the Valentine's Day, on 496 AD.

In olden times some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

section in European countries like Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and the Czech Republic, among others. However, the ‘global village’ dimension which the courses acquire every year is reflected in the notable presence of students coming from places as distant as the United States, Canada and Brazil, as well as Hungary, Romania and Argentina, to name a few.

THE JEREZ FESTIVAL Jerez‘s Flamenco Festival

A

ndalusia is the birthplace of Flamenco, making Jerez a fitting host for the world's leading Flamenco festival. Thousands of dance students gather each year for workshops and master classes on the full range of flamenco styles and skills such as flamenco compás and clapping and learning how to handle the bata de cola and other elements such as the shawl and the fan. It is a once in a lifetime chance to learn from the masters, which helps explain the fierce competition from around the world to claim one of the 1,000 student spots. For those who are not lucky enough to get one of the coveted student invitation, it is still worth making the journey to Jerez to witness the most famous bailaores of our time performing throughout the festival at the Teatro Villamarta.

So far a total of 624 students

16 The Grapevine

coming from 30 countries have formally registered for the baile courses of Festival de Jerez 2013, which is to be held from February 22nd to March 9th. Registration for the 44 courses in the event’s training section - which also includes compás and clapping workshops - opened on September 6th. In this short period of time, the level of occupation has already reached 57.5% for an offer which rises to 1,085 places. There are currently 8 courses which have filled up and, just like in past editions, predictions point to a figure of nearly one hundred percent occupation being reached. Of the 30 countries represented, belonging to every continent, this first statistical survey is highlighted by the traditional dominion of the students coming from Japan and the strong establishment of this training

The training section of Festival de Jerez is one of the most unique proposals in this event which moreover includes an extensive program of shows and concerts together with other activities. All of them have flamenco dancing and Spanish dance as their common thread. The interest in the festival’s courses and workshops responds to the existence of a varied offer – of styles and academic level - and the presence of the greatest maestros, many of whom are active artists. There are four learning levels. This diversification covers everything from beginners’ level to advanced. NOVELTIES Highlighting the novelties of the upcoming edition is the workshopseminar which Eva Yerbabuena will teach about a show’s creative process, which is complemented with practical classes on knowledge of the body through technique. Moreover, a related program includes the collaboration of two private companies specializing in cultural management. On the one hand, Monto Cultura will set up a course on flamenco photography taught by Gilles Larrain, a prestigious artist whose works have been seen in New York, Paris and Hamburg, among other cities. On the other, the International Flamenco Institute of Jerez will carry out courses in cante, guitar, soniquete and introduction to flamenco, in such a way that the training offer extends to other artistic disciplines besides baile.

EXERCISES YOU CAN DO ROUND THE HOUSE Tips to keep the fitness New Years Resolution going Side Plank There are many great core exercises you can do in the home, the side plank being one of them. To perform a side plank first lie down on your side. Make sure that your shoulders are in line with your elbow, then lift yourself so that your thighs are off the ground and hold that position for roughly a minute.

bend your knees, bringing you into the squat position.

Repeat this exercise again but on the other side. By completing 3 sets of this exercise every couple of days, you should begin to see better stamina, core strength and oblique definition.

Tricep dips If you’re looking to tone up your arms, tricep dips are an easy home exercise. All you need is a chair or a bench to perform this exercise.

Push ups work your core, pectoral muscles, triceps and deltoids. You should aim to complete at least 3 sets of 10 push ups per day.

Squat Thrusts The Squat thrust is a great muscle-building and cardiovascular exercise that can easily be done in the home. To start, stand up straight with your hands to your side. You must then

While sitting on a chair or bench, place your hands on your side. Lift off onto your hands and push your hips forward, bending your elbows as you move forward.

Diet and supplements: Eating well is essential when exercising. While it can be tempting to graze all day at home, eating a balanced diet is a must if you’re hoping to get results from your home workout.

Fall forwards placing your palms on the ground then extend your legs behind you, assuming a press-up position. Bring your legs back in and go back to the starting position. You should aim to do three sets of 10 squat thrusts per day.

When doing tricep curls, make sure that your hips don’t move too far from the bench or you could end up working your shoulders more than your triceps. Press ups Press ups are one of the most common forms of callisthenic exercise, and the sheer number of variants makes this exercise infinitely valuable.

Push yourself back up and repeat.

THE CUDECA POP-UP DINERS CLUB Supporting a good cause

W

hat is The Cudeca Popup Diners Club? Simply put, we are a bunch of ordinary people keen to assist Cudeca and Macmillan to raise much needed essential funds. We Pop-up at different Host Venues each quarter of the year – Feb/May/Aug/Nov with each event providing a different themed Menu. Amongst us are foodies who not only enjoy cooking good food, but also the ultimate prize of consuming the delicious dishes. Of course, everybody has their own ideas of "their perfect meal" and it is therefore our aim to organise events that appeal to all tastes. Each event is themed accordingly. How does the diner benefit? Our Diners are provided with a themed dining experience in exchange for paying for their meals, just as you

The Pop-up Diners Club Pueblos de moñtana por encima de Velez Málaga

would in any restaurant! It's a win, win situation for everyone. Our diners eat good food and ALL profits are donated to Cudeca and on some occasions Mamillan UK too. How do the volunteers benefit? None of our volunteers benefit financially. They benefit not only from the mere satisfaction of assisting Cudeca and Macmillan to raise funds, but also knowing they are assisting in keeping these essential services running! Statistically, everybody at some point in their lives will be/has been affected by Cancer! This statistic is too high and with your help this could be dramatically reduced. More and more Cancer patients are survivors these days, but the terminally ill patients are still in the high numbers. Together we can stamp this out.

How do Host Venues Benefit? By donating the use of restaurant dining areas and kitchen/s for our events, the owner/proprietor is requested only to take full control of the bar, thus earning profits from all drinks/beverages only. They are not required to donate financially at all, this is purely voluntary. All we ask is the use of the venue on a day/evening they would normally close during the week and our own volunteers take full control of the menu and food for diners. By becoming a Host Restaurant, they naturally receive much publicity in addition to bar profits. How does Cudeca/Macmillan benefit? Our financial assistance in raising donations!!. Want to become a Volunteer or Diner? Or maybe start a club for your area? JANSEN RILEY DOES THE TURKEY TROT! Raising money for Action for Animals, Competa t was the 9th December and there I was standing on the start line of the Keyworth Scouts 30th annual Turkey Trot Half Marathon.

and take part. A phone call a month later led to informing me that she had applied for the both of us to take part in the Turkey Trot and that we were in!

The reason I was there had all begun with a conversation I’d had with my sister some three months earlier. She had, in the past two years, at the tender age of ** (she wouldn’t appreciate me advertising her age!) taken up running and had been regularly running 10KM and half marathons, she had also completed the Edinburgh Marathon earlier in 2012.

GULP….training commenced, although several years ago I had completed half marathons and three marathons, the previous decade had passed without any form of training. It was during these early training runs that I began to think of how my pain could be turned into gain and having run the 2003 Flora London Marathon for Children with Leukemia I felt that raising money for a local charity would be a good idea. We had recently been involved with the rehoming of Dee’s dogs through Action for Animals and realised how essential funding is in order for it to carry out its work.

As I was due to fly back to the UK to see my parents at Christmas I had jokingly said to my sister that if there was a 10KM or fun run in the local area I would support her

44 The Grapevine

So there I was Action for Animals T shirt and Elf hat in place ready to go. 2hrs 14 minutes and 19seconds later and in 732 and 733 places respectively from a starting lineup of 1100, my sister and I crossed the line. Many thanks go to all of the individual sponsors, to Nina at the Action for Animals shop, Lisa and Juan of Naturvets, Gloypat, Marco Polo, Terteria Herbabuena who have all donated and managed to raise €380 which will all go to helping animals in distress. On the 3rd February 2013 I will be taking part in the Torremolinos Half Marathon in preparation for the Mablethorpe Marathon in October, watch out for those sponsorship forms!

cistus florentinus

Sun or Rock Roses Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

T

e sun roses (cistus spp) are some of the most lovely, fleeting and delicate of flowers and yet the plants are as tough as old boots! They’re the ones you see growing wild in the campo, smothered in palepetalled tissue-paper like flowers in springtime. Thoroughly Mediterranean, native to dry parts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Canaries, they grow in impossibly rough ground, rocky, stony, and in full sun, exposed to all the elements and they obviously relish it. There are some 20 species of cistus and, I think I’m safe in saying that, we now have in stock more types than any other garden centre in Spain! So let me tell you a little about these wonderful

46 The Grapevine

plants. Romantic and ephemeral as wild roses and as appealing as poppies with their wrinkled and furry flower buds, they have foliage with a warm aroma and taste to deter the nibbles of wild animals and they fill the air with their musty perfume on warm spring days. They are all happy in poor rough alkaline soil, baking hot spots and they need no irrigation, once established. They will also grow happily in exposed coastal conditions and support cold weather down to around 10C. They are perfect plants for those impossibly steep banks that we are all trying to tame! Cistus albidus, white-leaved sun

rose or, in Spanish jara estepa has very felted, aromatic, grey leaves (a water saving measure) and is some 75cm high x 50cm wide. The spring and summer flowers are a very pretty pale pink and rather like a wild rose. In several Arab countries the leaves are made into a tea which is said to be very good for the digestion. During the Civil War when food and supplies were scarce, the leaves were used as a tobacco substitute. Cistus ladanifer, gum cistus or, in Spanish, jara pringosa. Forms a large shrub varying between 1m and 3m high with very sticky foliage, strongly aromatic and smelling of balsam. The name ladanifer alludes to the resin

labdanum, the fragrant gum that is emitted by the plant and, nowadays, much sought after in the perfumery trade as a substitute for ambergris which gives us that heady and rich amber aroma. Ambergris used to be extracted from slaughtered sperm whales, now a protected species. The flowers are generally white, five-petalled with deep burgundy blotches staining the centre. The flowers are fleeting but abundantly produced.

cistus ladanifer

Cistus salvifolius, sageleaved sun rose, in Spanish jara negra. The leaves on this one are oval, rough and hairy, rather like our culinary sage, hence the name. The spring and early summer flowers are white, around 5cm across and the bush reaches 1m. Medicinally used as an astringent and to heal wounds. Cistus purpureus, purple sun rose, in Spanish, jara purpura. A moderate grower to 1m cistus purpureus tall and 2m spread. The fragrant purple-pink flowers are showy, flattening as they open and revealing the typical five deeper splodges at the base of the petals. It is, arguably, the most graceful of the cistus, billowing and spilling down rugged hillsides. It can layer and root as it spreads. Cistus x florentinus, the fontfroide sun rose. A cistus with cistus albidus mid-green foliage to around 30cm tall and spreading, it encourage bushiness but never produces myriads of snow-white prune hard as they dislike this and flowers through springtime and may not regenerate, rather like early summer. platinum sheened artemisias, denim blue teucriums, silvery convolvulus cneorum, sky-blue ceanothus, sunshine-yellow genistas and the blue-purple of Russian sage perovskia atriplicifolia. And one more important advantage is that, unlike many other dry condition plants, they are relatively fire-resistant so can be used as a fire-retardant barrier around your garden. In fact, if really fierce fire strikes and burns them, this seems to augment their power of germination and they’ll often return better than ever. But one little warning, don’t give one of these plants to your loved one, as they symbolise, in the language of flowers, infidelity or even imminent death! That’s perhaps the only bad thing you can say about these lovely flowers!! Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 26 years. A landscape gardener and writer, she’s always happy to give advice. LA BOUTIQUE OPENS IN COMPETA A John Lewis in Spain

A

t last La boutique in the village of competa is now open. The huge 3 floor department store has been the vision of Jose (owner of Portichuello FerreterĂa) and his fiancĂŠe Lisa. It has taken him nearly 8 years to transform the original second floor shop within the family building to the store it is today. The building can be found on the left hand side as you enter Competa on the way to the car park. This building started as a ground level herbal and drug store run by Jose's family. When Jose returned from military service 15 years ago he opened his own independent store on the second floor of the building .In its time it was the place to do your wedding list and buy items for your home. Over the next couple of years Jose went on to set up and create the massive ferriteria complex on the Venta de Palma and Competa crossoads. Once achieving success in the

hardware arena he looked for his next project. Rather than starting a business from scratch it seemed to make sense to invest in the family building in the village and to expand an already successful shop albeit a small business. When the time came his family was happy to move the Herbalist across the road to a new shop allowing Jose to resurrect the whole building and expand it underneath. Over an 8 year period work stopped and started on what is now La boutique. La boutique has 3 levels which can be accessed by a lift or stairs. Each level is different and all is good quality and in expensive items. Lisa prides herself on the relationships she has developed direct with suppliers both here in Spain and in the UK. She admitted the buying process for the store started over 3 years ago to the point they had to open soon as they were running out of

storage space both in the warehouse and her and JosĂŠ's' apartment. Jose has controlled the build project and Lisa all the buying and displaying. They have both worked hard to overcome various setbacks, regulations and permissions and finally they opened the store on 20th December 2013. Lisa was happy to report an excellent start which was helped by sales over the festive period in the extensive toys section on the lower floor. However, it wasn't just the toy section that received praise but also the baking department. This level seems to have any tool or machine to make any creation in the kitchen! La boutique at present has the gift and home ware department accessed from street level via automatic glass double doors. The lower floor is baking and dinning and the final floor on lower level is the toy, children's

These are perfect gift items for the important occasions such as births, weddings and communions. Lisa has also sourced traditional Peter Rabbit Christening sets. She is currently working with a couple of English companies for their kitchen and baking section. Currently Kitchencraft from the UK supply 50% of their stock. Lisa will constantly strive to improve and evolve each section and current plans for the spring include a party section for all the party products you will ever need

from Helium balloons to wedding favors. Plans for a lingerie section and cosy slippers and socks are also underway. Lisa is also talking to “Jane” a new baby products supplier in order to stock their famous “Jane “ prams and baby walkers. Finally, she plans to evolve the bedding section more with more products and styles from European suppliers. La boutique will also be hosting a variety of events

Lisa is bilingual and her role is the ongoing stock purchases and managing of the four staff, Jodie also bilingual and Inma and Lydia who are Spanish. A BIT BIZARRE! News facts and theories!

C

ow tipping is an activity allegedly performed by sneaking up on an upright, sleeping cow and pushing it over for fun. There are factors that make success in this effort unlikely, and a variety of calculations have been performed, sometimes with humorous intent, to determine if cow tipping is physically possible. Academics in the zoology department of the University of British Columbia have concluded that cow tipping is impossible, noting also that cows sleep while lying down. Some consider the attempt to practice it an act of animal abuse. In 2004, a Florida legislator proposed a ban on "cruelty to bovines", which while not specifically addressing cow tipping, included language that would apply to the practice: "A person who, for the purpose of practice, entertainment, or sport, intentionally fells, trips, or otherwise causes a cow to fall or lose its balance by means of roping, lassoing, dragging, or otherwise touching the tail of the cow commits a misdemeanor of the first degree." The proposal did not become law.

T

he Puppy Channel was a short-lived American cable television channel

56 The Grapevine

whose programming consisted entirely of video footage of puppies. The network was created in 1997 by retired advertising executive Dan FitzSimons. FitzSimons and his daughter Molly stated in a featured segment on This American Life that he came up with the idea when he was watching the O.J. Simpson murder case during the daytime and kept flipping through the channels during lulls in the trial only to see nothing was on but game shows, soaps, and reruns. FitzSimons said he thought "Something else is necessary. There's a need for a parking place on television. If you don't want to watch something that is there, you could have the TV set on, and it'd be playing something that didn't bother you, and would hold the place until your favourite show or what you chose to watch." To fill this need, he conceived of a channel that would show "24 hours a day, 7 days a week, footage of puppies fooling around like puppies do, acting the natural comedians and cuties that they are, with no people, no talk, accompanied only by relaxing instrumental music."According to Molly FitzSimons, 41% of people in focus group surveys said they would prefer watching the channel

to CNBC and 37% preferred it to TBS. At its peak in 1998, The Puppy Channel was seen on four local cable systems around the U.S., before FitzSimons decided to give up in 2001

Cadiz Carnival

FOCUS ON......Carnival The Top 3 places to spend Carnival in Spain 7th-17th February 2013

T

he week before Lent is carnival time in Spain. There is no one way that carnival is celebrated in Spain each one of the below cities has a slightly different style. You will find some sort of celebration in most cities in Spain, but the following three are the best places to be. 1. Carnival in Tenerife, Spain Each year a different theme is chosen and the carnival kicks off with the presentation of the Carnival Queen Contestants. Days of band and murga (comedic folk singers) contests and concerts follow and culminate in the Grand Parade. Though the Grand Parade is really the highlight of the Carnival season, more events follow. Festivities focus on Santa Cruz to begin with but gradually spread out to other areas as each town and village

celebrates its own fiesta. Apart from the singing, dancing, parading and joking by organised groups there are also live bands and dancing in the open air for everyone most nights from around 2300 until daylight. There are official stalls all around the streets selling drinks and ‘tapas’ to the thirsty, hungry revellers, these stalls and their positions are bid for by tender each year and sell for amazing amounts of money to help offset the huge costs of carnival. All manner of other events are grouped under the banner of carnaval from football to anta Cruz to begin with but gradually spread out to other areas as each town and village celebrates its own fiesta. All manner of other events are grouped under the banner of carnaval from football to clay pigeon shooting to vintage car rallies, there is literally something for everyone. Tenerife carnival is finished with the burial of the sardine; a huge papier-mache sardine is paraded through the city followed by hundreds of weeping ‘widows’ this gives the Tenerife male population one last chance to dress as widowed ladies, all in black, the only thing is that their idea of ‘widows weeds’ is mini dress and fishnet tights! good looking young tourist innocently watching proceedings, he’s likely to be showered with kisses from the widows. The sardine is then burnt accompanied by the inevitable massive firework display. 2. Carnival in Cadiz, Spain The carnival in Cadiz has a healthy dose of music and comedy added to the mix. As one of Spain's major ports during the 16th century, Cadiz copied the carnival of Venice, a city with which it had much trade, and since then it has become the liveliest and most dazzling carnival town in mainland Spain, famous for its amusing and creative characters and satirical song groups.

Chirigotas - These are humorous groups that perform satirical pieces about everything from politics to current events. Choirs - These groups of singers may be funny at times, serious at others. They tend to be out and about, entertaining people in the streets accompanied by stringed instruments. Comparsas - These are the most serious singers at the festival. They are known for their more classic musical talents and the more serious content of their songs. Quartets - They don't have to stick to the traditional four - but then, this is the carnival, after all. Time to break the rules! And they are most often accompanied by none other than a kazoo and the beating of sticks. Romanceros - These are the solo acts at that roam the streets to entertain visitors and locals alike.

Cádiz is home to mainland Spain's premier carnival. In fact, numerous groups and associations throughout the city along with the city hall, of course spend the entire year preparing for the next carnival. Such dedication does, therefore, deserve more than just a weekend of festivities, which is why this most ancient of European cities keeps the Sitges Carnival celebration going for at least a good 10 days. 3. Carnival in Sitges, Spain The carnival in Sitges starts with Newcomers to the Cádiz carnival the Dijous Gras, which means Fat will probably first notice the Thursday. Resembling the famous elaborate costumes which are on Mardi Gras, on this day the king of par with those of any great festival the carnival, the Carnestoltes, of this nature. People dance on the street, fully celebrating the spirit of carnival and enjoying traditional local dishes during this festival. One of these dishes is the Xató, a salad with cold Cod and a catalan sauce, which has different recipes in many towns of the area, which is called Ruta del Xató. Traditions: The ending of the festival period is marked by the Entierro de Sardina, where the Sardine, a giant statue is burned at the beach and buried there. As a symbol of the end of the good times, during the 40 days of Lent no fish or sweets are consumed. This custom is well-known in different countries as well, but Sitges adds its own style and version to this carnival tradition; attracting many visitors each year who admire and gaze upon the traditional dances, the amazing costumes and masks and the local cuisine in Sitges during this festival. Gay Carnival in Sitges Sitges also helds a second carnival, parallel to the Carnival de Sitges; the gay carnival of Sitges. Shows and events such as the Glamour Night, Carnival Bingo or Tourist Night are organized and promise fun and excitement during the festival time. Visiting the Carnival in Sitges means experiencing a unique festival in a town situated directly next to the Mediterranean Sea and surrounded by the Natural Park of Garraf. And although the carnival was prohibited during the Franco regime in Spain, the tradition survived and today displays itself with all pride.

cardiovascular disease. Why is it bad? Aside from being high in fat and calories, peanuts also are loaded with omega-6 fats that distort the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. This ratio says that your intake of each omega fatty acid should be 1:1. . Peanuts are often contaminated with a carcinogenic mold called aflatoxin, and they are also one of the most pesticide-contaminated crops. Instead choose: almonds or all natural organic peanut butter, but pour off the top layer of oil and replace with olive oil if the resulting peanut brick is too stiff. Olive oil is very low in omega-6 fats.

HEALTHY FOODS! Unhealthy foods which are often thought of as healthy 1. Diet Drinks Why is it good? A sugar free version of the popular carbonated beverage that you can drink on the go. Why is it bad? Take out the sugar and add in carcinogenic artificial sweeteners, combined with the artificial flavours and colours that are in all diet drinks, and you have a recipe for a Tumor in a Can. Then of course you’ve got the caffeine factor, which is linked to hyperactivity, high blood pressure, and can mess with your blood sugar. Instead choose: Filtered water and the occasional glass of milk 2. Sushi made with white rice and imitation crab meat or vegetables Why is it good? Seaweed contains essential nutrients such as selenium, calcium, iodine, and omega-3 fats. Sushi is nearly always wrapped in seaweed. Why is it bad? They are just

small, compact, high glycemic, high calorie, carbohydrate nuggets. There’s not even much protein in these things. Aside from that, imitation crab meat isn’t even good for you. It is mostly just a crab flavored tofu-like substance fortified with sugar, sugar, and more sugar. Instead choose: In order to get some healthy carbs, some highquality protein, and the benefits of omega-3 fats, choose real sushi made with salmon or tuna. To make it even healthier, order sashimi instead of white rice. 3. Peanuts Why is it good? Peanuts contain healthy fats that contribute to the reduction in triglycerides, which are known to promote cardiovascular disease. In addition to monosaturated fatty acids, peanuts also contain magnesium, vitamin E, arginine, fiber, copper and folate all of which help to reduce the risk of

4. Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter Why is it good? All peanut butter provides a heart-healthy substantial quantity of monounsaturated fat. Why is it bad? Most commercial peanut butters are made with the same type of sugar that cake frosting is made with. Reducing the fat makes it even worse because even MORE nasty sugar is added and they contain less healthy fat. Instead choose: As with peanuts, choose almonds or all natural organic peanut butter instead. Just remember to pour off the top layer of oil and replace it with olive oil if the resulting peanut brick is too stiff. Olive oil is very low in omega-6 fats. 5. Corn Oil Why is it good? It contains omega-6 fatty acids, which are unsaturated fats that don’t raise cholesterol. Why is it bad? In the true spirit of peanuts, corn oil has 60 times more omega-6s than omega-3s. Omega-6 fatty acids increase inflammation, which boosts your risk of cancer, arthritis, and obesity. Instead choose: Canola or Olive oils, which have a far better ratio of omega-6s to omega-3s.

Winter Wanderings! Part 1 here was a certain amount of apathy as we packed Merlin the Motorhome for our annual journey back to Cornwall. When you've made the journey so many times it can start to look a bit like a chore rather than adventure, so we decided to try and vary the route as much as possible and to do overnight stops in new places. Our first new place was, in fact, Salobrena!

T

an overnighter - a short stroll to the beach, bars and shop - and we were able to make an early start the next morning. So much for our new places as our next port of call was Almerimar (again!). Sometimes you just have to go with what you know. However, it's always interesting to walk around the harbour, looking at where the boats have come from and pointing out their often very imaginative names.

Yes, I know it's only just down the road, so to speak, but it actually meant that we could take our time on our last day here, which can become a bit fraught as I try to remember everything we'll need for the summer. We were then able to tootle on down to the coast, do a leisurely shop and meander on to the parking place just outside the town. It's a bit of an unofficial place to stop, but we had seen motorhomes there on several occasions before so we thought we'd give it a try. Fine for

Circumstances dictated our next stop. We were bowling along quite happily heading up towards Alicante when, oh no! a puncture and on the motorway too, and on the offside. Couldn't be worse! My husband, fortunately, spent many years as a long-distance lorry driver so this kind of thing doesn't really faze him (I'm the one having the nervous breakdown as he's changing the wheel with the traffic thundering past him). Within minutes, though, the traffic police arrived and couldn't have been .

more helpful, immediately setting up diversion signs around us, and advising us as to where we could go to get a new spare. As soon as we were on our way again, a quick look in our guide book told us of an aire at Santa Pola, where there was a vehicle workshop. The young chap who ran the aire was very friendly and even offered to take my husband into town for the spare when he came back from lunch. As it happened, we managed to sort things out before then, but we appreciated the gesture. Even though the aire was on an industrial estate, there was access to an ecopark which made for very pleasant walking, especially as it was bursting with orchids. On now in the direction of Alcoy, through some beautiful mountain scenery. I was especially taken with some artwork - three huge open-ironwork heads- at the entrance to a tunnel. I still find it amazing, and uplifting, that so much trouble is taken in Spain to

display works of art all over the place, and so very often in the most unlikely of settings. Our next stop was at El Saler, just south of Valencia. Again, a dedicated parking area for motorhomes, with great access to the beach through wooded walks. The whole area is part of the Parque Natural de Albufera, and the huge lake there abounds with all sorts of birdlife. At weekends it seems that the whole of Valencia comes here for outdoor pursuits- cycling, hiking, canoeing etc.. And then on to Valencia. We hadn't planned to stop here, but the traffic was so slow going in that we were able to have a good look at La Cuidad de las Artes y Ciencias buildings as we snail-paced past. Cutting-edge modern design - impossible to be ignored! Many photographs later, and further up the coast, we headed for Benicarlo and our next stop. Just a few streets inland from the coast, with its promenades and hotels, this area is agricultural - its main crop being globe artichokes. Fields and fields of the biggest you've ever seen. Almost mutant, and such a huge plant for so little edible return. It must be a lucrative crop, though, as these vegetables were guarded by very ferocious dogs. Back along the coast then, at Vinaros, we turned inland and travelled cross country to Tortosa, heading towards Lleida. It was Easter Day, and this beautiful area was covered with flowers and plants resplendent in the Easter colours of purple, yellow, green and white - quite magical. We were now in the valley of the Ebro river, where the pine-clad mountains reach right down to the water's edge, and hilltop castles look as if they've risen organically from the rock on which they're built. Cyclists were out in force along this road, and we carefully passed a very professional and determined Russian group, kitted out in iridescent blue Lycra. This eye-catching colour was only surpassed moments later by the kingfishers I saw skimming the

water. A rare treat (the kingfishers, not the blue bottoms!). Further up the valley, above the town of Asco, we were in another agricultural area, but this time the main crop was pistachiosinteresting, as I'd never seen them growing before. After having done many trips in our motorhome, we have (almost) managed to embrace the adage "A place for everything and everything in its place". In a confined space this is essential if you wish not only to enjoy the journey, but to stay sane as well. So we keep rigidly to our own cupboard space and areas, with severe penalties for infringements! The dog has trouble with this, however, and either doesn't (or refuses to) recognise the seat designated as her bed, despite the clue that it is covered with a paw-print blanket, and selects seats at random. I allow her the privilege of old age something which is not extended to my husband, though, who has quite a reputation in the family for untidiness. His cupboards must remain firmly closed. A case of "what lurks within"! Tamarite de Litera is a small town which seems not to have quite decided if it wants to celebrate its heritage, or dispense with it altogether and become completely modern. Much of the town is derelict, which could possibly have been due to the Civil War, although I couldn't find out any information about this. Money has been spent here, though, because there are some very pleasant public areas and new buildings. We were now past Huesca and heading towards Pamplona. We pulled up at the side of the road at the attractive town of Ayerbe, as we just had to take photographs of the amazing rock formations. This stunning scenery was leading us into the "Route of the Bridges" along the Rio Gallego, one of the few historic communication routes between France and Spain. Up on

now into the province of Aragon and, past Jaca, we turned off the main road to explore the Echo and Anso Valleys. Such a picturesque drive which was well worth the detour. During the early 1970s, the village of Echo attracted all kinds of artists from Europe and beyond. One in particular, a sculptor named Pedro Tramullas, formed the Echo Symposium de Arte with the intention of creating an Abstract Art Route between the Echo Valley, Spain, and the Aspe Valley, France, along the Camino Romano. This A.A.R. is not yet complete but, nevertheless, during the years 1975 to 1984 one hundred artists of all art forms lived and worked in Echo, with the result that there is now an openair exhibition of 46 sculptures dotted over a hillside at the edge of the village. The sculptures are positioned in line with planetary constellations- what Tramullas called "the symbolism of the ancient culture". In addition, next to the entrance to the sculptures, is an information point and art gallery. Altogether a very worth while visit. From Echo we went on to the next village of Anso which, over the years, has been"prettified", but not to its detriment, and whose restored houses are the holiday homes of people from both sides of the French/Spanish border. We wandered through the narrow, cobbled streets and then sat in a lovely park area, while red kites wheeled overhead. Onwards and upwards into the remote regions of the Western Pyrenees, an area known to still contain wolves and bears! Into the gorge of the Rio Esca, we were able to park overnight at the rear of a rural hotel. It was surprisingly hot for an evening in April this far north, and we relished sitting in the sunshine while watching a field of about twenty horses who seemed to be playing games of "tag"and"catch me if you can". Season with the salt and pepper and then gradually add in the gram flour. Finally bind the mixture together with the egg and leave to cool in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp of olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. With wet hands, divide the falafel mixture into 4 equal amounts and the roll into a ball before squashing into a burger shape. Place them into the frying pan and fry for about 3 to 3 ½ minutes per side until golden brown.

FALAFEL RECIPE

Option – ½ tsp of chilli powder of flakes

A quick and easy sauce to accompany your falafel is as follows: 1 tomato finely chopped 1 pinch of salt ½ tsp of harissa paste 3 tbsp of diet mayonnaise 1 tbsp fresh coriander leaves chopped

Drain the chickpeas and pour into a bowl. Roughly crush the chickpeas with a fork.

Put the chopped tomatoes into and bowl and sprinkle the salt on top.

Add the chopped onion, garlic, parsley and fresh coriander. I tend to mix in each ingredient separately.

Add the harissa and then mix in the mayonnaise.

What do you call a drunk Afghan? Bin Drinkin.

I took back this pretty scouser girl to my apartment last night.

The Crash "Are you mad!," I shouted, "you pulled out right in front of me!"

someone the old fashioned way. Through alcohol and poor judgement.

"That was your fault," she snapped. "I don't think so, love. Look at the damage; you've buckled my front left wheel!" "You're just being ridiculous now," she responded. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

I rang the RSPCA yesterday and said, "I have just found my dog lying down in a puddle of blood in my back garden." "That's awful," she said. "Is it moving?"

As we were kissing on the sofa, I grasped both of my hands around her body. ''Trying to show how tough you are, eh!'' she smiled. I said, ''I'm just making sure you don't nick anything from this house.'’

"Look," I replied. "Let's exchange details and get this mess sorted out."

"Quite emotional, yes.”

"Oh for Christ’s sake," she retorted, "just get another trolley and grow up.”

"Spare a bit of change?" begged this homeless guy.

"Not a chance mate, get a job!" I sneered.

I just found out this morning I'm on day 3 of an argument I didn't know I was having.

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA announced music will be played and information provided through a new loudspeaker system inside the caves.

NERJA MUSEUM AND CAVES The €5 million Museo de Nerja museum received less than half the visits the managing board had hoped for since it opened in December 2011. Just 19,500 people visited the museum, when the Fundacion Cueva de Nerja company which manages the museum and NerjaCaves, expected at least 40,000.“We are not happy with the results and what it is on display at the museum, but we are not replacing it all of a sudden,” Fundacion managing director Angel Ruiz said. “The museum has just started. There is still a broad leeway for improvement,” Enrique Lopez, manager of Nerja centre’s shops association said .one of the solutions considered by the board to boost visits is to start a ‘train’ service to bring tourists from Nerja Cave to the Museum. The service, which would cover the four kilometres between the caves at Maro and the museum in Nerja centre, could be started by Easter. The Nerja Caves were visited by 400,000 people last year. In order to improve results, the Fundacion

EVICTION PROCEEDINGS Banks are seizing an average of three premises a week for mortgage defaults in the Axarquia. Currently, there are around 100 eviction proceedings in the Velez and Torrox courts. These are the figures recorded since September, when a legal unit was created by the Malaga provincial government to give free professional help to families and individuals at risk of losing their properties. Most of the eviction proceedings are on second homes, properties that were bought as an investment or business premises. In about 10 per cent of the cases people are being forced to give up their main home. The information was provided by attorney Juan Fernandez from the Lawyers Bar Association in Malaga, and the Ignacio Fernandez lawyer’s office. The attorney confirmed that, so far, they have recorded one case in the Axarquia when the

bank has repossessed not only the mortgaged house, but also the home of a relative who acted as guarantor.
