On the 31st December Competa held its first Carrera San Silvestre. The village hadn’t held this run race event before but it was a extremely well organised day that involved the whole community. The event started around 11 o clock with the younger age groups racing round the village and then at midday the adults raced from the Plaza Almijara, 8 km into the mountains to finish back in the plaza where a huge paella and drinks were provided to all the villagers and visitors. It was a great day for the family with medals for each age group winners and a special medal for effort to a few local children whose disabilities meant they weren’t able to run the whole race. Thanks need to be given to the organisers, sponsors and volunteers for the day and Competa looks forward to hosting it again next year. A link to the race photographs has been added to our Facebook page in the meantime see page 46 and 47 for a small selection of photos from the day. Finally I have to mention it ... it snowed in Competa in January! Its the only the second time in the 12 years I have lived in the village, that I have seen snow settle. It didn’t snow for long, but temperatures remained less than 4 degrees for a few days, again the coldest snap I have experienced for a long time.

caused a “slow death with a painful and prolonged agony”, the court said in its ruling. Prosecutors accused the pair of having killed 2,183 animals between January 2009 and October 2010, when the alleged slaughter came to light during an inspection of the facilities. They believe the pair killed the animals to reduce costs and make room for the centre’s for-profit activities.

adrid is drawing up plans to plant gardens on the rooftop of the city's buses and bus stops. The authorities in the Spanish capital have come up with the proposals as a novel way of tackling CO2 emissions. The gardens are also intended to soak up heat, noise and pollution. A garden on a bus rooftop will cost 2,500 Euros (£2,143.35). Those on the top of bus shelters will be rather cheaper. The project, known as “Muévete en verde” , is one of six schemes designed to improve the city's environment. They were chosen out of 800 entries. A pilot project will involved just two routes in Madrid - no 27 and 34 - which were used by 17 million people last year. “Each garden will be formed of metallic meshes and sustainable materials that can withstand movement and not leak water,” said José Antonio Antona, the project manager. The gardens will be built from metallic meshes and other sustainable materials. There will also be customised irrigation systems

Spanish court has sentenced the head of an animal shelter to three years and nine months in jail for killing hundreds of healthy dogs and cats in a way that provoked “prolonged agony”. The court in the southern city of Málaga also fined Carmen Marín Aguilar, 72, €19,800 (£17,200) after finding her guilty of animal cruelty and the falsification of documents. Felipe Barco Gómez, 55, a caretaker at the Parque Animal shelter in Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol, was jailed for a year and ordered to pay a fine of €3,600 for his role in the deaths. The court said Aguilar injected healthy animals of different breeds, mainly dogs and cats, with euthanising drugs without sedation while Gómez held them down. Aguilar used a smaller dose of the euthanising drug than is advised in order to save money and injected it directly into muscle tissue instead of intravenously as recommended, it added. This
en are miles ahead of women when it comes to having their names on the streets of Spain’s main cities. Only 21% of the 9,000 streets that were reviewed in Madrid are named after a woman. In Barcelona, the percentage drops to 19% and in Valencia it’s a miserable 10%. And the discrepancy doesn’t end there. Among the women with streets named after them, 83% are either saints or representations of the Virgin Mary. Renaming streets currently named for female saints after females scientists would be costly and unsettling for locals. But while expert Madrid toponymist Luis Aparisi wonders if this is simply a reflection of the society that existed years ago, when the streets were first created and christened, there has been little sign that the imbalance is being redressed as Madrid continues to develop.

Waiting lists in just about every organ category have fallen, from 5,673 patients in 2015 to 5,477 in 2016, a drop of 196.I n total, last year 2,994 kidney transplants were carried out. For livers, the figure was 1,159; for hearts 281; and 307 for lungs. There were also 73 pancreas and four intestinal transplants.

had to put a stop to it all, and the lottery of love was banned. 3. Denmark Valentine’s Day, or Valentinsdag as it’s known in Denmark, wasn’t widely celebrated in the country until recently. But the Danes have still managed to come up with their own little tradition that has become very popular throughout the country.
VALENTINES TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD Five Traditions from Around the World
I
n England, Valentine’s Day is usually celebrated with a box of chocolates, a Valentine’s card and maybe a romantic dinner date. But not everywhere celebrates the day of love like this, or even on the same day. Here are 5 traditions from around the world to inspire you to do something different this 14th February. 1. Germany Germans celebrate Valentine’s Day by exchanging gifts of chocolates, flowers and pigs. Yep, you read it right, pigs. The pigs represent love and lust, and can be given to a love interest as a picture, a small ornament or made of chocolate. As well as giving their loved one a pig, Germans also make large, heart-shaped gingerbread biscuits which have romantic messages written on them, such as Ich liebe dich (German for I love you). 2. Japan In Japan Valentine’s Day is split across two days. On Valentine’s Day girls will give traditional chocolates called Giri Choco to their male friends and sometimes their male co-workers and bosses. These chocolates don’t have any romantic meaning but are traditional to give on that day.
14 The Grapevine
If they want to give a more romantic gift, they’ll include something handmade too. A month later, on the 14th March, it’s time for the guys to return the favour with chocolates and other gifts. This is known as ‘White Day’ and is a tradition in Korea too. 3. France According to the history books, Charles the Duke of Orleans wrote the first Valentine’s card because he signed the poem he’d written inside it as ‘Your Valentine’. While the French can lay claim to the first proper Valentine’s Day card, they have another Valentine’s tradition that isn’t very romantic at all. The tradition of loterie d’amour (lottery of love) involved singles gathering in two houses opposite one another. The men would pick their ‘match’ from the house opposite, and if the man didn’t like the woman he picked, he could leave her and try to find another one. As you can imagine, this didn’t go down too well. The women who were left would make bonfires to burn pictures of the men who left them and fights often occurred. Things got so bad that the French government
Gaekkebrev are short poems or rhyming love notes that men send to women, with the only clue as to who it’s from being the number of letters in the sender’s name. The recipient must guess who sent the card. If she guesses correctly she wins an Easter egg which she’ll receive at Easter. However if she’s wrong or can’t guess the sender’s name then she owes him an egg instead. 5. Italy Originally Italians celebrated Valentine’s Day as the Spring Festival. Couples would meet in parks to enjoy poetry readings and music before going for a walk together. It was also tradition for unmarried girls to wake up early on Valentine’s Day to spot their future husbands. Supposedly the first man they saw that morning would be the man they would marry. Today Italians celebrate Valentine’s like most other countries - by exchanging gifts and going out for a romantic meal. A popular gift in Italy are baci perugina. These are small, chocolate coated hazelnuts wrapped in a romantic quote printed in four languages. Whether you decide to send a Gaekkebrev to your Valentine, or even try to revive the tradition of the loterie d’amore (maybe not), make sure you don’t give your loved one an unwelcome surprise too!

epicentre of Carnival is the Sambadrome, which is a custombuilt stadium that surrounds the main parade route. It is here that samba schools from throughout the city fiercely compete to be crowned the grandest spectacle. The Sambadrome parades are on all week but the most spectacular displays occur on Sunday and Monday night. Outside of the parade ground, there are thousands of free street pageants and block parties that revel from dusk till dawn. These can either be in well-established locations just erupt spontaneously; such is the spirit of festivity that flows through the Brazilian city during the Carnival weekend. And if that wasn’t enough all weekend there is slew of organised balls; from the glamorous to the glitzy, there are balls where you go to be seen with the city’s glitterati, and balls where go to be not seen such as the famous masked ball.
WHAT IS RIO CARNIVAL? The Biggest Party in February!
R
io Carnival is without doubt the biggest and most famous street party in the world, with hundreds of thousands of people flocking to Rio de Janeiro each year to partake in the festivities. And now it’s your chance to join in all the fun! For four days the already-lively city of Rio is transformed into a sea of sequins and brightly coloured feathers on bodypainted dancers moving to the infectious rhythms of samba beats and banging drums. Impromptu street parties erupt

spontaneously throughout the city each night and in the daytime thousands flock to the city’s famous beaches to recharge for the night ahead. Carnival has its origins in marking the arrival of Lent; ostensibly one last big blow out ahead of the following 40 days of self-denial before Easter. Today the days of Lent may not be observed as they once were, but each year Carnival is bigger and livelier than the year before.
How do I get myself there? First thing you need to remember to do is organise your flights well in advance. Rio Carnival is the world’s biggest and most popular party and these fill up fast. Accommodation can be a thorny issue with room prices exploding for that weekend as about as fast as they sell out. One good way to ensure you get the best out of Rio is to travel with a well-established tour operator. The biggest advantage of going with an operator is that you can rely on their knowledge of Carnival their experience of where the best parties in town happen to be happening and importantly how to make the most of this fabulous festival and really ensure yourself the party of a Lifetime! THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPANISH COFFEE A Reminder to Many!
S
imply asking for un café (a coffee) won’t cut it, you must be more specific. COFFEES SERVED WITH LITTLE OR NO MILK Café Solo A café solo is a small cup of strong, black espresso. Order this if you need a some energy during a fun day of sightseeing around Madrid. Café Americano If the intensity of a café solo is a bit much, try a café americano. This coffee contains the same amount of caffeine as a café solo but with more water, resulting in a milder flavour. Café Cortado A café cortado is small cup of espresso with just a tiny touch of milk. Other regions in Spain may refer to this drink as café manchado which means stained coffee – but sometimes a manchado will mean a glass of milk stained with coffee, so be sure to specify!
22 The Grapevine
Café con Hielo This summer time favourite is literally coffee with ice. The barista will give you a cup of black espresso, and another cup containing ice cubes. Pour your coffee over the ice, and enjoy. Carajillo The coffee order doesn’t have a drop of milk, instead it has alcohol! A carajillo is coffee served by taking a cup of espresso and adding rum, whisky or brandy. COFFE SERVED WITH MILK Café con Leche A café con leche is coffee served with equal parts espresso and milk. Sometimes when you order this, the waiter may ask if you want hot or cold milk. If you’re in a bit of a hurry and can’t wait for the steamed milk to cool, ask for cold milk (leche fría o leche del tiempo). Leche Manchada This drink, which means stained milk, is made by taking a cup of steamed milk and adding a drop of espresso.
Café Bombon A café bombon is coffee made from espresso and sweetened condensed milk. Those of you with a sweet tooth must try it, you won’t be disappointed. If you prefer to eat your sweets, make sure to check out the some of Madrid’s best pastry shops. DECAFFEINATED COFFEE Fresh decaffeinated coffee isn’t very popular in Spain, and many cafes may only have it in instant form. If you order a café descafeinado de sobre, you will be served a cup of hot milk and given a packet of instant decaffeinated coffee. If you’re lucky, the cafe may have machine brewed decaffeinated coffee or descafeinado de maquina. If so, decide how you would like your coffee served and then clarify that you’d like it made with decaffeinated coffee. For example, if you want a decaffeinated café americano, simply say: “Querría un café americano descafeinado.”

A declaration must be submitted individually by the owner/s, regardless of their number and the percentage of participation, which would be established later. For example, if you own half of a property with a value of €50,000, although your particular €25,000 share is below the threshold, each owner would still be required to submit an individual declaration based on the total value of the property.

ll those tax residents in Spain, (i.e.:-those living in Spain for more than 183 days a year or when Spain is the main base for your business), should be aware that as a result of legislation passed on 29th October, 2012 for the prevention and control fraud, all natural or legal persons resident in Spain who have any assets outside of Spain with a value of €50,000 or more, are required to submit this declaration form to the Spanish authorities. This declaration can be made on line, through the Tax Office`s web page www.agenciatributaria.es where the Modelo 720 (Statement of Assets Outside Spain) can be located and completed. It must be filed between January 1 and March 31, of the first year of residence, to avoid being investigated or fined by the Spanish authorities. The assets outside of Spain that

are subject to this new declaration form fall into 3 categories: 1. Real Estate. 2. All types of accounts, investments, bank deposits and companies. 3. Actions, rent, insurance, bonds or dividends acquired or managed outside Spain. To warrant a declaration the total value of assets should be €50,000 or more in EACH OR ANY ONE of the categories; e.g. if we have 2 properties valued at €30,000 although the value individually would be below the threshold the total value of both would be €60,000 thus exceeding this limit, and therefore subject to this new declaration, necessitating the completion and filing of Modelo 720. However, if you have a property valued at €30,000 and say, shares valued at €30,000 as they are in separate categories and each total value does not exceed the €50,000 then you
Although this declaration of assets and rights abroad is solely informative and NO TAX is charged, failure to file, late filing or false information could result in serious consequences. For this reason, we recommend that residents fulfill their obligation to declare their assets, to avoid the imposition of fines from a minimum of € 10,000 to a maximum of 150% of the value of those undeclared assets located outside Spain. Once you have made your first declaration it is not necessary to present any further declarations in subsequent years, unless any of your assets in any category increases by more than €20,000 above the initial value declared. Please do not hesitate to contact us so we can guide you through this process. We will inform you exactly what the requirements for the completion and submission of the Model 720 are. BUYING A PROPERTY ABROAD 10 tips for Buying Abroad
W
e have always known that investing in bricks and mortar is normally the most lucrative and wisest investment you could ever make. However, with the continuing price rises in the UK many are looking abroad to buy an investment home and future nest egg. Spain has always been first choice for many, with year round sunshine and relatively cheap cost of living. Nevertheless, what do we buy and how? Tony Roberts reveals the secrets to buying property here in Spain and offer his ten top tips on making the right investment. When we bought our first property in the Costa del Almeria, we broke every rule and guideline. We bought impulsively whilst on holiday, having done no research whatsoever. We dealt with an estate agent who we later discovered had a rather colourful history, we bought off-plan without ever visiting the site, we did not use a lawyer and so the list went on. It was very exciting
26 The Grapevine
and we were incredibly lucky. However, do not push your luck follow these guidelines. Get it right and you will have a wonderful asset that will give you and your family enormous enjoyment over the years as well as creating greater wealth. 1. Get the help of an Estate Agent. Your first step should be shop for a good estate agent, not shop for a property. Estate agents are necessary in the UK and in most other countries; you cannot afford to be without one. Get yourself a good one, look at the websites; a good one will seem genuinely concerned about informing home buyers, check out the testimonials. A reputable agent will help you to find the right property and take the headache out of property searches especially if you do not speak the language. However, a warning, think hard before going it alone without the help of an estate agent. In reality, buying privately will mean months of chasing people and worrying that you have not done everything
you should. However, if you do buy privately, then be very careful. 2. Nothing beats good legal advice. As with using an estate agent to look for the right property, make sure you have the right lawyer when making your final purchase. A good agent will recommend a local lawyer who speaks English, who knows the area and all its regulations. It is amazing how many people are willing to buy something abroad without the use of a reputable lawyer. It is something they would never dream of doing in the UK. 3. Location, Location, Location Remember the words of hotelier Conrad Hilton who, when asked what were the three keys to success, famously replied, Location, location, location. Fifty years later not only is it still true for the hotel business, but also for buying a home with resale value. As in the UK, where you buy
To advertise call 637 028 873
counts just as much as what you buy. Narrow your location choices to just a few places and think of resale value when considering a property, and will it make a good rental? Make sure necessary shops and services are located nearby and try to make sure surrounding properties are of a similar standard and size. In addition, try to get something located near the town. Remember, buying the least expensive home in the best location is better than buying a beautiful home in an undesirable location. 4. Do your homework Buying property abroad is an exciting experience; however, one of the biggest mistakes investors make when it comes to buying property in a foreign country is failing to do their homework. You cannot do too much research into an area. Spain is a big place so first settle on a region. If it is unknown to you, try to visit the area as many times as possible so you can glean more than just one impression. Looking for property online and in newspapers and magazines should always be part of your strategy as it vastly increases your chances of finding what you want. If you are looking for property online, begin by making your initial searches as broad as possible. You can always narrow your searches later. Careful local research before you commit to buying can save much heartache later. 5 Stay Focused and do not be hasty. Stay within your budget and keep focused on what you originally had in mind, it is all too easy to be tempted to buy something that is not what you really want. While you want to cast your net as wide as possible so that you do not miss your dream home, you do not want to be wasting time viewing property that is wholly inappropriate or
To advertise call 637 028 873
completely unaffordable. Therefore, you should draw up a realistic and accurate wish list. However, you must go looking for your home with an open mind. You will soon realise that it is virtually impossible to find exactly what you want, so you may need to compromise on some issues, you prioritise your requirements. 6. Know why you are buying. Make sure you know why you are buying and what it is that you are seeking to achieve with your purchase. Is it a holiday home, a residential home or an investment. Are you looking for short-term gain or regular longterm income? If buying for investment, it is vitally important that you understand the risk factor and you are comfortable with it. 7. The bigger house is not always the better. In any residential development, houses vary in size but if you are looking for maximum resale value do not always choose the largest house on the block. When determining market value, the homes nearest to yours are most important. If most of the nearby homes are smaller than yours then they can act as a drag on appreciation. On the other hand, if you buy a small or medium house in the development, the larger homes can pull yours up in value Do not assume that the more bedrooms you have the better the property is. Two and three bedroom properties have the quickest sell-on value and you should try to stick with this when buying. Two bathrooms are necessary and as most will tell you, a large kitchen is the heart of the home. 8. Money, money, money. The simplest fact is can you afford it? Stay within your budget, consider what you are
buying, and allow for extras. The cost of buying a property in Spain is much higher than in the UK, (VAT, lawyer's fees, and taxes), so you must budget accordingly. Consider the pros and cons of buying abroad and always factor in costs including existing commitments and future expenses. Buying a home is a rewarding experience but remember to invest in the location of your home first. Research is key in buying abroad and you have to have patience and time when making such a huge investment. If you remember that location is the primary factor in property, your money will continue to grow through the years and earn you your share in the property world. 9. Check the transport links. Make sure there is a choice of budget airlines, and if possible more than one airport. Check out the road infrastructure. People who rent property will want somewhere that is easy to get to and will often be attracted to those places with a nearby airport served by low cost airlines. Budget airlines have opened up huge areas of Europe, but do not assume they will always be there. What would happen should the airline close down the route? 10, Check the taxation and inheritance laws. Make sure you understand the tax implications involved should you decide to sell. In addition, if you want control over how the property is dealt with on your death and avoid any restrictive rules, then check out the inheritance laws it is likely that you may need two wills one for any assets in Britain and one covering your property and savings in Spain. IS IT TIME TO PICK UP THAT PEN? Writing Axarquia
A
t some stage in our lives most of us will find something we want to write down: perhaps to keep a record of some real event, to reason out our thoughts and beliefs on the page or maybe just to exercise our creativity and imagination. The trouble is, many of us carry an amount of baggage that prevents us from getting started. Writing can be an exposing thing to do, you might be worried that you'll feel silly or embarrassed or suffer from the old 'who do you think you are' syndrome that gets in the way of getting on in many areas of life. If that sounds familiar I can tell you that you're not alone. For every creative writing course we've either attended or run the most frequently asked question has been, is this for me? Take heart. If you've reached the point where you're asking the question, the answer is most probably a resounding yes. It doesn't matter whether you're penning your first ever 500 words or working on your next novel, what most of us need is a healthy dose of encouragement and a little guidance to get us started, build confidence and steer us clear of literary faux-pars. So, in the spirit of committing to
30 The Grapevine
new things for the año nuevo, here are a a few writing FAQs to help you decide if the time is right to pick up your pen or start tapping those keys. What if I'm not good at reading? Neuroscientists measuring brain activity have determined that the act of reading and the act of writing activate totally different parts of the brain. The living proof of this has been demonstrated in a number of stroke survivors who have lost the ability to read, yet have no difficulty with writing. Whether you read a book a week or a book a year, it isn't a measure of how well you can write. What if English isn't my first language? If you know enough English to understand this, you know enough English. Creative writing is a fantastic way to develop skill in expressing yourself, because it's inherently playful. A personal goal for us is to one-day write creatively in Spanish, so if English isn't your first language, but you'd like to have a go, we'd love to hear from you. What if I didn't do very well at school? Lots of people don't do well at school. Fi and I didn't either and
we both returned to education in our 20's and 30's. School classrooms just don't suit everyone. The great thing about creative writing as an adult is that many of the so-called rules are there to be broken. If you're worried about punctuation, we can show you famous writers who don't use any (or at least use very little.) If you're worried about grammar, we can show you books written entirely in colloquial style where the rules of grammar matter not a jot. Good creative writing is more often about deciding on your own rules and then staying true to them. It's about having fun. What if everyone else is really good and I'm not? This is not a competition and there's no such thing as perfect writing. In everything you write, something will work brilliantly and something else will need tweaking. Sharing your work with a supportive, friendly group is the best way to develop your craft and build your confidence. What if I don't have anything to say? Everyone has something to say. Sure, if you're writing fiction, it helps to have a good imagination. If you're writing about nature or people, it pays to be observant. When writing poetry it's best to ponder and it always pays to care about the beauty of written language when it conjures everything you want it to say, but you can't be alive without something affecting you and if it has, you have something to say. Our first 8-week Introduction to Creative Writing starts in Cómpeta on Tuesday 7th February, from 79pm at Casa Paco. See our advert for details. HEALTHCARE ENTITLEMENT Healthcare in Spain Explained
I
f you are registered to work in Spain and make national insurance contributions then you can get state-run health care on the same basis as a Spanish national. For further information, get in touch with your local TGSS office. If you registered as a resident in Spain before 24 April 2012, have an annual income of less than â‚Ź100,000 and are not covered for healthcare though any other means, speak to your local INSS office to register for healthcare in Spain as a resident. If you are in receipt of a UK old age state pension or long term sickness benefit, obtain an S1 form (previously E121) from the International Pension Centre on +44 191 218 7777. Once issued, register the S1 form with your local INSS office, before you register with your local GP surgery and obtain a medical card. As from the 1st July 2014, early retirees are no longer able to
36 The Grapevine
apply for a residual S1 form based on national insurance contributions. The NHS Choices website has more information about this change. If you are a worker seconded to Spain, or the family member of a someone making UK national insurance contributions, contact HMRC to see if you have entitlement to an S1 form (previously an E106 or E109). Once issued, register the S1 form with your local INSS office, before you register with your local GP surgery. If you are coming to study or are currently studying in Spain as part of a UK-recognised course, you may be entitled to healthcare paid for by the UK. In Spain access to healthcare by children and pregnant women is protected by law. Please see the social worker at your local health centre for more details. IMPORTANT: If you are covered by the UK for healthcare and you
are going on holiday or temporary stay to another EEA country, you will be covered by your UK EHIC. To apply for an EHIC, you can do so by calling on (+44) 191 279 0575 or by emailing this S1 renewal application form (MS Word Document, 225KB) to nhsbsa.ehicenquiries@nhsbsa.n hs.uk Purchasing public health insurance If you are not covered for staterun healthcare through any other means, the Spanish regional health authorities offer a special pay-in scheme (convenio especial). This is a public health insurance scheme available nation-wide where you pay a monthly fee to access state-run healthcare. The scheme is managed by each autonomous region. Policy holders pay on an individual basis for access to public healthcare, regardless of pre-existing conditions, anywhere in Spain. Children will
To advertise call 637 028 873
also need to join the scheme, as long as their parents have sufficient income to be able to pay their subscription. If you have any doubt about your means to pay for your children to join the scheme, you must make an appointment with the social worker at your local health centre. The basic monthly fee is 60€ for the under 65s and 157€ for those aged 65 and above. However, prescriptions are not subsidised at this rate so you would pay 100% of prescription costs. This form of cover doesn’t give holders the right to an EHIC at this time, so if you wish to travel, you will need to take out private travel insurance. The scheme is now available in: Andalucía Baleares Canarias Castilla y León Galicia Madrid Murcia Valencia
how to use the EHIC card in Spain and further information is available on the Healthcare in Spain website.www.gov.uk/guidance/he althcare-in-spain#history If you are a UK state pensioner living in Spain and registered for healthcare with an S1, the UK is responsible for issuing your EHIC to use on a temporary stay in the UK and a third EU country. For more information, telephone the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999. The EHIC gives you access to medically necessary, stateprovided healthcare during a temporary stay in Spain. When you show your EHIC, you will receive treatment under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in Spain. Be aware that each country’s healthcare system is different. Services that cost you nothing at home might not be free in Spain (for example, prescriptions).
Visitors to Spain The UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for holidaymakers and temporary visitors who need to use the state health system while in another EU country. If you are not normally a resident of the UK, and therefore do not have entitlement to a UK-issued EHIC, the Spanish authorities may decide to treat you as a private patient.
The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property.
If you are a resident in the UK, you should apply for your EHIC before travelling to other European Union Member States. A UK EHIC is usually valid for three to five years – but if you stop being a UK resident, you need to return your EHIC to the Department of Health immediately.
Planned treatment The EHIC does not cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment. If this is the case you must apply for form S2 from your local NHS Trust.
There is a short video explaining

Oxygen therapy needs to be arranged by customers directly with the Spanish authorities. The Healthcare Teams at the British consulates provide a list of contacts and a template letter in Spanish on the Healthcare in Spain website to help you make these arrangements. Once you have sent the oxygen request directly to the Spanish authorities, it is your responsibility to then follow up with the relevant oxygen provider to confirm your request has been processed. Prescriptions Spain uses a co-payment system (information in Spanish) where residents are required to pay a percentage of the cost of their prescription medication. If you are a pensioner and have paid more than you should have for prescription medication, speak with your pharmacists or local health centre to confirm the process in your region to claim a refund. There has been no change to the rights and status of UK nationals in the EU as a result of the referendum. If you have a specific question regarding access to healthcare in Spain, please email the Healthcare Team on Healthcare.Spain@fco.gov.uk or if your enquiry cannot wait, you can call on (+34) 91 714 6300 and dial option 7 to speak to a team member from the Department of Health. STAY YOUNG WITH THE RIGHT TRICKS For Women Trying to Remain Looking Good!
F
or women, there is nothing more important than to look fresh and young. However, when we reach certain age, it becomes harder and harder to have flawless skin without imperfection. Wrinkles, dark spots, dark circles around the eyes, dry skin and some other problems become routines and common irritating issues on our skin. This is surely a horrible nightmare for women as it is always important to look as perfect as we could. Nevertheless, don’t worry too much as "All roads lead to Rome" and there are many natural ways to resolve this nightmare. Let’s try some of these tricks. Sleep Enough Often we think that it is enough to sleep few hours daily to get the necessary energy to do our activities. But, do we realise that when we don’t sleep enough, we will feel all the stress in your body, mind and soul? Sleeping

enough keeps us younger because we grow our youth hormone during sleep. Additionally, our skin also regenerates and grows a lot when our body is sleeping. Many of us think that it is fine to sleep 5 to 6 hours daily. Though actually, we need around 8 hours sleep everyday to stay healthy and young as with 8 hours a day, it can make our mind, body and soul become less stressful. Eat More Vegetables and Fruits Some of us don’t like vegetables and fruits. It’s sometimes difficult to eat healthy food as usually the less healthy food tastes better than the healthy one. Take as an example, green vegetables. It’s often not likeable to many of us no matter how healthy they are and we prefer something tastier to eat. However, when we eat a lot of green vegetables and also fruits, we help our skin as they do contain a lot of antioxidants to fight our aging skin and beat it. By consuming green veggies and
Another amazing oil for the skin is argan oil. This oil might have not been heard too often by some of us. Nonetheless, the fantastic ability of this oil for the benefits of our skin has been confirmed by scientific researches. Originally coming from Morocco, this oil was called as the "liquid gold" by New York Times for its miraculous benefits and marvellous smell. Furthermore, a huge area of argan growing region has also been approved by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. Argan Oil’s power includes moisturising, making our skin brighter and shinier, rejuvenating plus curing skin inflammation, rashes and infection. These abilities come from the fact that argan oil is rich of vitamin A, vitamin E, anti-oxidants, Omega6 fatty acids and linoleic acid. And that’s why the oil has become the treasure of every beauty program. Therefore, after knowing all this, staying young doesn’t seem to be an impossible mission again, does it? With the right tricks, looking perfect seems simple and doable for any of us. Dewi Wihardja

E
xterior painting and decorating can be a real chore, many properties on the Costa del Sol due to the unpredictable and severe weather that is experienced at the end of the summer and beginning of spring have to be redecorated every 2 to 3 years. Also, due to poor building techniques, many properties suffer from black mould on the interior due to penetrating damp. Another annoying problem is the Sahara
40 The Grapevine
sand rain which gets deposited at least twice a year. In this modern day and age when there are many long life exterior home improvements such as UPVC windows, doors, and shutters etc, which can last for 20 years or more, why can't the same technology be applied to exterior masonry coatings? Many people are unaware that there is a company called Andura based in Bicester Oxfordshire for over 40 years, who are a BSI
registered company and many of their products come with the much coveted British Board of Agrement Certificates. No Need to Paint Costa del Sol are their exclusive agents. Their products are designed and proven to last in excess of 15 years to stop penetrating damp, still allow the walls to breathe and their coatings are fully washable and fade resistant so won’t chip, flake or peel! In these difficult times it pays to protect your property and especially not to have the costly re-decorating responsibility every few years. If you would like to make exterior painting and maintenance a thing of the past, please feel free to contact us for an entirely free of obligation survey. +34 640 519 482 www.noneedtopaint.com

FEBRUARY FESTIVALS It’s time to celebrate in Spain
A
s well as the Valentines Day Celebration some of the notable fiestas Spain hosts in February include the Almond Festival, Gastro festival, San Cecilio Festival, Santa Agueda women’s festival, Santa Eulalia’s Day. The Almond Festival Every year in February when the almonds are plentiful, folks gather around the market squares to share in the fun of the bounty. The fun includes participants competing to crush as many almonds as they can in 30 minutes. All the crushed almonds are then separated so the shells can be put aside as the produce is kept in wicker baskets. Meanwhile the participants and the spectators alike are entertained with the best live music fiestas Spain’s

orchestras can mount as well as party disco. Jumping the Bonfires On midsummer night, the Basque village of Arizkun is the place to be: that is if you fancy running along the streets and jumping over more than 20 bonfires. The ritual fire jumping and wider fiesta go back to pagan times, part of a celebration to scare off monsters and evil spirits as well as encourage fertility. Hundreds of people descend on the village – hardly any are foreign tourists – to enjoy the fire leaping followed by a traditional pageant depicting the conquest of a marauding bear. Be on your guard however, because part of the proceedings involves the Ioaldunak, a group of
fierce-looking men in strange, Honey Monster-like costumes toting huge cowbells, who stomp along the streets in two columns and don’t stop for anyone who gets in the way. Morris dancers they are not! Stiges Carnival In winter, Sitges is a rather quiet village, but it gets packed with thousands of visitors for one week during carnival. Famous highlights are the Debauchery Parade (›Rua de la Disbauxa‹) on Sunday evening and the Extermination Parade (›Rua de l‘Extermini‹) on Tuesday evening. Sitges Carnival features one of the most popular annual celebrations that is celebrated throughout Spain. Being that Stiges, Spain has a reputation for being one of the gay capitals of Europe, the town that takes pride in being

recognized for throwing one of the most exciting and largest carnival parties in the country, which lasts for a whole week! The dates for the event vary, but the festivities always start on a Thursday, in the month of February. San Cecilio On 1 February is the day of the Patron of the city of Granada. It is a tradition to visit the catacombs and the Monastery of Sacromonte. San Cecilio is celebrated on the first Sunday of February, on this day there is a pilgrimage that goes up to the Sacromonte to the catacombs of the saint. People say that San Cecilio was one of the three envoys, the other two were Isio and Tesifon, sent by St. Peter to Spain for evangelization. When they were gathered in the catacombs of this mountain with nine other priests they were surrounded by the Romans and martyred. His disciples wrote the story in a lead sheet and hid it between two stones, one white and one black, that were thrown into the river Darro. Found in 1595, were sent to Rome, where the originals are preserved, in order to confirm its authenticity. After that date were built an abbey and collegiate near the catacombs. During the pilgrimage, the girls of marriageable age touch the white stone if they want to get married or touch the other side of the stone if they dont want. So you know, the choice is yours. San Cecilio is a working day in Granada. Santa Agueda Santa Agueda or Saint Agatha's Day is honouring the famous saint from the Italian island of Sicily. It is celebrated on Sunday the closest to 5th of February. The festivities lasts from Thursday to Tuesday.

The celebration of Santa Agueda in the Spanish village of Zamarramala, Castilla y Leon is rather unique. It is believed that the tradition started in 1227. Zammarramala has been declared the place national tourist interest. On Thursday morning village representatives visit the provincial capital of Segovia to get the baton and other authorities needed for the festival. They wear special clothes. On Saturday afternoon the villagers choose two women to rule in their village during the festival. Those women are called the Alcaldesinas. It takes more than two hours for the women to get dressed in their 16th century style costume. The most important part of the costume is the montera type of hat called the "Twelve Apostles". The women also wear rings, earrings, the special golden cross and various relics. The festivities honouring Santa Agueda start in the early hours of Sunday. At noon two mayoresses receive the priest and other important members of local community. Then there is a big procession. Many people carry various flags. Two Alcaldesinas perform the dance known as “Baile de las Alcaldesas”. The Santa Agueda festivities also include burning of the male figure at the village square. Nowadays it is a chance for the members of community to have good time. In the past this act also represented the way local women used to show their rebellion against male dominated society. Everything finishes with lot of traditional food, music and dance. Typical delicacy is the chorizo stew. Chorizo is the traditional Spanish sausage. Monday is the day dedicated almost entirely to local women. As it is working day there are less tourists. Two mayoresses are dressed in blue cloak. They participate in the dance called “la gala”. Their short, but busy, term in office ends on Tuesday.
Santa Eulalias Day "Les Festes de Santa Eulàlia" is Barcelona’s biggest annual festival for children. The festival of Santa Eulàlia is also known as "La Laia" festival. Laia is a nickname for Eulalia. The main Santa Eulalia festival events take place every year on the days around 12th February, which is Santa Eulàlia's day. On Santa Eulalia's day at 9.45 am an important tradition is the raising of the flag "Penó de Santa Eulàlia," ( reproduction of ancient Barcelona penant flag) on the balcony of City Hall on Plaça de Sant Jaume and followed by the opening speech called the "pregó de Santa Eulàlia." The Santa Eulàlia festival programme features more than activities concerts, processions, open house events and other activities of all kinds, mostly for children. The festival takes place at many venues all over Barcelona but it is mostly in the Ciutat Vella old city of Barcelona. The programme for the Santa Eulalia festiival includes many typical Catalan traditions like parades with gegants and other fantasy figures. You can see castellers human tower building, Catalan folk dancing sardanas, correfoc fireruns and many other activities including story-telling, puppets, family workshops, talks, concerts and more. Many museums have an open house day during Santa Eulalia and some are free to visit during the entire festival period. Museums are also taking part by holding open days. Once again in 2016 you can enjoy the the festival of light LlumBCN Barcelona Light Festival during the Santa Eulalia festival days. The light festival, Llum BCN transforms various spots around the old medieval Ciutat Vella district with 24 light installations and visitor routes through 14 medieval palace courtyards.

COMPETA YOGA SCHOOL Celebrate their 1st year Anniversary
C
ompeta Yoga celebrated its first year anniversary at the end of last year. The instructor and owner Inez has been practicing and teaching Yoga & meditation for 22 years and in October 2015 she opened the Yoga school in Cómpeta. www.competayoga.com Inez practiced and taught Ballet for 14 years, and became aware that ballet taught a great physical discipline, but did not create a mental connection for the individual, like Yoga. Following many years of working as a qualified fitness instructor, Inez eventually found her way to Yoga, and embarked on her Yoga teacher training, which she continues annually. Inez embraces and enjoys Yoga as the practice is about connecting to you, whilst being a physical mediation, enabling positive and strong focus on one's individual energy. Yoga centres and

balances the mind and body, restoring and rehabilitating mental and physical well being. Her first teacher training for Yoga was with the Nike Academy. Inez has trained Ashtanga Yoga with David Williams in Holland, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga with Elsie Matthijssens in Belgium and many others. Such is her expertise, she taught at the Congress of Yoga in Marbella in September 2016. Inez has a unique approach to all her students, providing personal attention and getting to know her students outside of class, to enable her bespoke yoga teaching for you, when in class. Inez offers 11 classes that run weekly at the yoga school. Alongside this she offers private classes both at the school and on location. Inez teaches and organises Yoga retreats in the area along with weekend workshops with guest teachers. These weekend workshops were especially popular last year with both national and international
The classes Inez runs regularly at the school includes Pilates and different types of Yoga. She offers Pilates classes to all levels twice a week. The Yoga classes are split between the different types and for different levels. Basic Yoga is for those that have never participated in Yoga before or are beginners or like a slower paced class maybe due to age, injury or agility. Vinyasa Yoga is a more dynamic class, more flow and a little faster. Ying Yoga is deep stretching with meditation and carried out all on the floor. This class is enjoyed by those who may not be that flexible and or enjoy meditation and are flexible! Surya Chandra Yoga is a combination of Ying and Vinyasya Yoga, it starts at a fast pace and slows down to stretching and meditation. Finally, Inez teaches Ashtanga Yoga which is set series of postures which are always the same and is a very dynamic class. New members are always welcome at the Yoga school. You can pay for 1 class at a time or pay for a block of classes which then entitles you to a discount. These blocks of classes have no expiry date and are great for those that holiday or visit the area regularly but are not necessarily here all the time. Inez loves her work and always dreamed of having her own Yoga school, she feels fortunate that she has achieved her goals but it has certainly required dedication and hard work. She believes it is never too late to start Yoga, it has not age limit, and she loves the saying..... “If you can breathe you can practice Yoga!” See advert opposite.

Debbie moved, with her husband Tony, to Spain in December 2015. She is well travelled, confident, likeable and trust worthy. She originally grew up in St Albans later moving to Suffolk where she lived with Tony and raised her son. Tony worked abroad a lot and once her son was older, it seemed to make sense not only to travel by way of fabulous holidays but to actually live in and experience other countries. They spent some time in Germany before Spain mainly due to their love of sports and motor racing but in the end they felt it wasn’t the right place for them both. Debbie was only keen on living in Europe due to her son and mum still living in the UK. She wanted to be able to visit them at a moments notice or just when she felt like it. When talking to Debbie you realise how important her family is to her. So the Costa del Sol was chosen next due to the weather and accessibility to the UK. Debbie packed up their car and dog and drove on her own from Germany to Spain. She bought a mobile home in Antequera as a base to house hunt from. Three days later she found Competa and had bought a villa, all this was while her husband was working away!
I GO SHOP FOR YOU An interview with Debbie Mathews
D
ebbie Mathews launched I go shop 4 you at the end of last year and although still a new business it is already proving successful and useful to both men and women and to all ages. Debbie
58 The Grapevine
explained, the idea is very simple; I go shop for you so you don’t have to! This can mean anything from grocery shopping to a personal shopping day or even research for that unusual item.
A few months later, house sales, a holiday and a bit more packing they moved to Spain permanently last year. Luckily for Debbie, Tony was happy with the location and the house! Over the last year they have enjoyed renovating their home, exploring and socialising. However, Debbie realised with Tony working away and no longer having a family to raise and being too young to retire she need to do something for herself. Whilst they had been renovating their villa she had especially enjoyed finding the right pieces for their home which wasn’t always easy. Alongside this she was a woman that had always enjoyed shopping for herself and other people, so it seemed a natural idea to set up a business based on her strengths, hobbies and interests.

I go shop 4 U was launched with a website http://igoshop4you.com/ and face book page, I Go Shop 4 You. It is a private bespoke shopping service, which is designed to bring all your shopping requirements to you. Every request is treated with the upper most care and complete confidentiality. Debbie prides herself on having an eye for finding that unusual or unique item be it clothing, footwear, a hand bag or even a garden ornament she does the research so you don`t have to. Her aim is to source whatever is requested, in the quickest and most cost effective way possible so saving both time and money. Debbie also offers a professional style advisory service. She will come to your home and or go shopping with you, giving constructive advice on fashion, colours and styles tailored for the individual. Debbie has joined many women’s groups and business clubs to
promote her business along with monthly magazine advertising. She has raised her profile and generated much interest and business from Almunecar to Gibraltar. Currently she provides a weekly shopping service to many elderly people living in the inland area and over the Christmas period she shopped for clients who didn’t know or couldn’t find the right gift for their wives. Debbie hopes with the lead up to Valentine’s Day she will be equally as successful as the Christmas period proved to be! Although the business is new, it is already providing a service in the area. Debbie hopes in the future to work with hotels. For example, where wives have joined their husbands on a golf/ sporting holiday or business weekends and find themselves alone for long periods she would like to offer a shopping experience. Having been in this position herself, the hotels are always lovely and have
a spa and great food but often in the middle of nowhere and boredom can set in. This is where a personal shopping day could fit. Debbie would pick up her customer from the hotel and take them to a shopping area, provide advice if asked, be there as companion for the day or leave them to it and then take them back to the hotel. I go Shop 4 U is a great idea and Debbie Mathews is the right person to launch it with the perfect ingredients of hard work, trust worthiness and glamour it’s a perfect fit. I go shop for you so you don’t have to! Need help on Valentine’s Day give me a call! See advert below for contact details,

Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to fit the quiche dish. Transfer to the prepared quiche dish and press gently into the base and sides.
Ingredients Serves: 8 50ml olive oil 1 onion, diced 1 green capsicum, diced 1 red capsicum, diced 500g tomatoes, chopped salt to taste 200g tinned tuna 1 hard-boiled egg, chopped 2 sheets puff pastry 1 egg, beaten Directions Preparation:20min Cook:40min Ready in:1hour
Line the pastry case with baking paper and fill with dried beans (this prevents the pastry from rising and allows it to cook evenly).
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C and heat the olive oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and cook till soft. Add the capsicums and cook for 5 minutes. Add the tomato and salt to taste. Stir, cover and cook for 10 minutes.
Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly blushed golden brown. Remove from the oven and discard the beans and baking paper.
Stir in the tuna and hard boiled egg. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a bowl combine the tuna and add the beaten eggs, yoghurt, seasoning, onion and grated cheese then mix well and pour into the pastry case. Sprinkle some grated cheese on the top. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes until the centre is firm and the shortcrust pastry is a deep golden colour. Remove from the oven and serve warm, or allow to cool before slicing and serving.
Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Lay one sheet of pastry over the parchment. Lightly prick the pastry all over with a fork. Spoon the tuna mixture over the pastry in a rectangular shape, leaving about a 4 to 5cm edge of pastry. Pull the edges up over the filling. Prick the second sheet of pastry, then use to top the filling. Trim edges and pinch to seal. If desired, use the trimming to decorate the top of the empanada. Brush the top with beaten egg. Bake in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown. Cool slightly before slicing.

Africa and spread gradually to take over the whole World. It is generally recognised that Africa is the home of diverse masking traditions. Whilst they may not seem to link directly to Carnival masks in style and structure the traditions behind them do link. Strangely the answer to my question seems to go back to the pictures on the cave walls of Palaeolithic people. 25,000 years ago the roots were established. The caves in Trois Feres in France reveal the following;
CARNIVAL AND CARNIVAL MASKS Thoughts and feelings from Ian Bracegirdle

here did the use of Carnival masks and Masquerade masks
begin?
The Venetian Carnival began over 900 years ago. It has run except for a gap ( from 1797 1987 ) and is replayed in its 18th century form today. Many other carnival masks and masquerade mask traditions can be traced back far into medieval times. The true roots came be traced back even further. Venice and other European masquerades are the precursors to modern Madi Gras and masquerade in the Americas. But again I ask where did the traditions of Carnival and carnival masks begin? Take a trip back in time to the Roman times. Around mid February there used to be a Festival called Lupercalia. It is described as a circus like festival. When Roman began to accept Christianity the pagan
62 The Grapevine
festivals were modified to become a part of the Christian calendar. So here is a first link. Now I believe that if we go further back to the Greeks we can find examples of big festivals and the same type of open air festivities associated with Carnival. Think of Bachus and celebrations of wine etc. The first link then is that the Christian Festivals are built upon the pre Christian ones. The Egyptians being the forerunners of the Greeks also had their own large outdoor festivals. These must have influenced the Greek way of life. Now if we accept the links between Egypt and Africa then the initial influences probably came from tribes further South. See Grisso at his site for a view of Carnival and its origins To take things back even further. It is generally accepted that our original ancestors came from
A central figure stands wearing the head and antlers of a deer. He stands, shaman like, surround by animals. Animals that are important to the culture he represents. Some of the animals no longer exist in this area. Ibex, reindeer, bison, stag and horses. The shaman, for that is what he seems to be, stands, a human figure amongst the potential food. What magic he is creating or ancestors he is communicating with we do not know. Yet from our knowledge of tribal people studied in times closer to ours it is possible to understand the links. The need to hunt for food is essential to survival. The gods link all matters, stay in good standing with the gods and food will be available. Take only what can be used fairly and do not violate the natural laws. Life goes on, following the seasons. There is a balance to life and death. The link between them is maintained by the magician, shaman, wizard, witch doctor, whatever you wish to call him. Not Carnival masks but the foundation of traditions spreading throughout the World. I have covered a great deal in a very short space. And maybe bitten off more than I can realistically substantiate. Every time I read about the background to masking, asque

and Masquerade I find that these factors stand out. The links between the traditions in all parts of the world hold common elements. If we accept our common ancestry then it makes sense. Simply it comes down to this. When you find that there are similar elements behind the masking traditions in Africa and North America then we have to accept that there is a common influence in play. (It could of course be the interpretation of the academics who have influenced my studies with their own agendas.) These same structures of; reverie of ancestors, links with the dead, the seasons of harvest, growth and planting, fertility, good and evil all crop up time after time. In many cases they are linked further by some kind of Fool taking part in the enactment.
What really fascinates me is that these links are embedded in our modern cultures through masquerade, carnival and other traditions such as Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations. Amazingly these European traditions, superstitions, and links to ancient practices, have passed into other cultures in South, Central and North America plus of course the Caribbean. How has this happened? The European conquerors took their traditions of festivals to the Americas. These festivals embodied elements of the earlier pre Christian times. The settlers changed the local festivals to embody Christian elements. So that when today we view masquerade and Carnival it is possible to recognise the Mayan or Inca festivals on which they were based. Christian
celebrations introduced by the Conquistadors and other settlers are a mixture of elements. When the addition of the African influence is added to the Carnival. An interesting picture can be seen. Carnival masks are, in my opinion related back to the earliest of times. For me it is a circle. A circle of belief based upom prehistoric understanding that underpin our fundamental nature as people. Our prehistoric mystical belief system from the past are now amalgamated on all continents. Probably some people who participate in these festivals understand their true nature. Our present position is to use this understanding of our common ancestry to build a forward looking route to the future. All this from looking at masks.

WHY SWIMMING IS SO GOOD FOR YOU If you have a pool use it
S
wimming is an almost ideal way to stay in shape. If you don’t already swim, it’s not too late to start. And if you don’t like to swim, there’s a wide range of other workouts you can do in water. Swim your heart out If you’re looking for exercise that improves heart and lung capacity, but is gentle on your joints, swimming is a top choice. Like other aerobic exercise such as running, it can improve cardiovascular fitness as well as cholesterol levels, provided you swim at a brisk pace. Aim to swim laps for 20 to 40 minutes at a pace that keeps
64 The Grapevine
your heart rate up. Start slowly; initially you may need to rest between laps. Over time, work out longer, preferably using different strokes and speeds. Because swimming places less demand on the heart than running and other sports, your heart rate won’t go up as high. That means your target heart rate—if you know it—will be lower by 10 to 20 beats per minute.
to weigh more and have more body fat than, say, runners or cyclists. Swimming is beneficial in this regard not only because it can provide an aerobic workout, but also because the resistance provided by the water builds muscle, which helps with blood sugar control.
Blood sugar and blood pressure control. Several studies have found that swimming can improve various measures of blood sugar control, such as insulin sensitivity. This is true even though swimmers tend
Weight control? Studies on the effects of swimming on weight have produced inconsistent results. While swimming burns a lot of calories (about 600 an hour, on average, depending on the

stroke and intensity), recreational swimmers tend to lose less weight than would be expected from other aerobic activities, such as running, cycling or brisk walking. That may be because cold water dissipates much more heat from the body than air at the same temperature does. There’s some evidence that this leads to increased appetite in the hours after swimming. You’ll burn the most calories doing the butterfly stroke or a fast crawl. Next come the breaststroke and backstroke, then the sidestroke. It’s good to do a few different strokes for a well-balanced workout. Even if swimming doesn’t help you lose weight, it can help reduce body fat and waist circumference, while toning all major muscles (arms, shoulders, hips, legs). Swimming is also a good way for runners and cyclists to cross-train, since it

uses different muscles. Arthritis and back pain relief Studies have generally given swimming and water workouts a thumbs up for people with arthritis or other musculoskeletal problems, especially if they are very overweight. Exercising in warm water, in particular, can relieve joint stiffness and pain and increase flexibility. It’s easier to move around in water, and water brings relief by reducing the load on knees and other joints. Many types of gentle exercise are good for back pain, but water workouts are among the best. A 2009 Turkish study found that aquatic exercise helped relieve chronic back pain better than a land-based program. Also in 2009, a Belgian review article in Clinical Rehabilitation found sufficient evidence to conclude that aquatic exercise is a safe
and effective way to relieve chronic low-back pain. And a 2006 Swedish study found that water exercise reduced the incidence of back pain in pregnant women. Working out in water reduces the stress on the spine, promotes muscle relaxation and improves joint flexibility. Every two weeks a small group of us have a private lesson with professional swim instructor, Ivan Tejero. Ivan is a former Spanish Swim Champion, and one of the leading triathletes in Andalucia & Spain. The lessons are all about improving swim tecnique and are ideal for anyone that is training for an event or would like to improve there swim stroke efficiency. The cost is 10 euros p/person for each lesson For more details contact Steve (grapevinesales@gmail.com)

WINE TASTING What I've learnt tasting wines
F
or anyone who develops a serious interest in the subject of wines, the issue of "tasting" arises. Tasting is not about drinking wine, it can be competitive and ideally food should not be present, at least while tasting seriously. The purpose is also different. Drinking is for pleasure, and we should only drink what we enjoy. Tasting is primarily for assessment. One of the easiest and most common options is to attend a wine course. They provide a chance to taste a number of wines per session and enable the taster to compare more wines of a specific variety or region than most individual budgets would normally allow. The process of tasting is more than just swilling the liquid into your mouth. It's possible that you are already informed about the age of the wine and the region from which it originated, The grape variety is usually mention at this time.
66 The Grapevine
There are four senses used in the process of tasting: sight, smell, taste and touch. Sight The first thing to do is to look at the wine and judge if it is clear, cloudy or hazy. If it's cloudy the chances are that it may be out of condition. Some red wines have a hazy look to them and all this means is that the winemaker has chosen not to filter it too harshly. The depth of colour of wine should tell you about it. A deep red wine suggests a thick-skinned variety like cabernet sauvignon or syrah, while a paler colour may suggest a variety like pinot or gamay. As red wines mature their colour also tends to fade. White wines that are pale almost watery in colour indicate that the grape is grown in a cooler climate. While a deep gold could be the result of a warmer climate, although it may also suggest the wine has some age to it and perhaps it has been aged in oak.
Smell Generally if the wine is faulty or oxidized it will be evident to the nose, and if in the event of a serious problem with it the taster will not even need to put the drink in their mouth. As a rule a three-year old sauvignon may be getting a bit tired, whereas a three-year old cabernet may be barely hitting its straps. Of a general rule the fresher the wine smells the younger it is. Wines are often classed as youthful, developing mature at their peak, tiring, which indicate that while it is often still quite enjoyable, it may be a little old. The more intense the smell generally indicates the quality of the wine is much better. Some wines have fragrances that leap out of the glass and assault the senses. Other wines barely have any smell at all. Taste and Touch: The final action to tasting is to actually get it into the mouth. This is where both taste and touch come into play. The tongue is only able to taste

compounds that are sweet, sour, acidic, salty or bitter. All the other descriptors which are used for wine are an extension of the sense of smell, which is why smelling, is so important before drinking it. Smelling will tell you about three-quarters of what you are going to learn about the wine.
this to be so. All wines are acidic; however some have a higher acid level than others. Red wines generally need less acid and fortified wine like port will have some of the lowest acidity component. Delicate white wines, such as Riesling, sauvignon blancs have the highest levels.
Sweetness It's logical to assume that sugar is the component which provides sweetness. Sugar trends are usually detected toward the tip of the tongue for most people. Alcohol itself is a sweet liquid, so that means that wines with a higher alcohol level may give a hint of sweetness.
Bitterness This should only be a very limited component of wines. In white wines should ideally be avoided altogether. Too much will spoil the wine.
Acidity This is the tart character one is able to sense in food and drinks. The senses for acid are usually found on the side of the tongue, however not everyone may find
Saltiness As salt tends to be detected in the center of the tongue, it is quite easy to detect a salty wine. Obvious salt in a wine usually means it had been badly made. Body Body is also a tactile sensation. Tannin registered by what we
feel in the mouth. It may be difficult to understand to a newcomer to wines. It is the drying sensation which covers the teeth, cheeks and gums when red wine is swallowed. It is it present in more than minute quantities then it is usually the result of poor wine making. Just remember wine is a drink which, above all is designed to be enjoyed - preferably with entertaining companions and good food. Key factors when choosing a wine is the setting and context in which it is to be drunk. The subject of food and wine is much misunderstood. Historically it has been tradition that certain food go with certain wines. The general opinion nowadays if that nay food may compliment any wine as long as the food itself is in balance. ingredients. Sure, going from the deep freezer to your dinner table in 15 minutes is good, but the darn things are simply isn't great for your health. Plus, many people discover that it's fun to cook their own pizzas from whatever fresh ingredients they may have on hand or can get at their local grocery store. Fortunately, you'll find a natural foods aisle at most markets where you can obtain what you need. Therefore, you can enjoy your pizza and keep on living healthy.
EATING PROPERLY AND TAKING EXERCISE IS NOT ALL YOU CAN DO FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE Just the little things can help

ou'd be amazed how many people think they should deny themselves of their favorite foods in their attempts to live healthier lives. Others work out incessantly, certain that that's the right path to a healthy lifestyle. The fact is that there are more painless and less problematic ways to achieve the healthy lifestyle you desire. Do you go to a gym for a couple of hours of exercising almost each day, all in the name of being healthier?A nice alternative can be simply going out for a walk now and then. Many people I am acquainted with have a light lunch at work and then spend 20 minutes simply walking around the office building. Other people like to stay in the building for their walks, particularly when the weather is bad. Know that simply walking will help you begin circulating your blood flow

and help carry oxygen to your brain. Of course, it doesn't end there. A lot of people awaken in the morning and enjoy a couple cups of coffee to start their days off. But what about gulping down herbal tea in the morning? When you consume tea, you have no mid-morning caffeine crash to deal with. And by choosing the right teas, you may find that you even have a lot more energy than you did with your caffeine high. Something that many people think is that they will have to go hungry if they want to start living a healthy lifestyle. This is just not true. You can still eat all the things you love, you simply need to make better choices when getting the foods you love. To illustrate, a lot of people love pizza. Simply try avoiding the frozen ones and choose handmade instead, using fresh
Now, as you're masticating on that delightful pizza, it's time to think about giving up candy and all sugar-based products. This could look like a very hard thing to do, but it really isn't that difficult. Or how about a cup of nice, hot chocolate sweetened with a good, low calorie sweetener? Fabulous. Another thing you have to do if you desire to start living healthy is to make sure you get enough sleep at night. Not getting sufficient sleep is harmful to your health. You can significantly improve your health simply by getting sufficient sleep - normally roughly eight hours every night. Folks who only get 4 to 6 hours sleep are in general more moody. When we are able to get to sleep for a full 8 hours, we're more fun to be with and things just appears to go more smoothly. As you can see, there are many little things we can do to attain a better way of life. It's your ball game. The determination is yours, and yours alone. Scott Weesner

vocabulary you use to a more positive one, even if the little voices in your head disagree, the act of just using a more positive language will influence your subconscious mind to begin acting in a more positive manner, this reducing the amount of stress that you place upon your mind and subsequently your body.
HOW TO REDUCE STRESS LEVELS A few tips
K
nowing how to reduce stress levels in everyday life is essential, but it is even more important if you run a business or have a very fast paced, high pressured job. Unnaturally high stress levels can play havoc on your central nervous system and cause many different problems, ranging all the way from muscular pain, illness and even mental issues if it is not dealt with. Let's face it, in this day and age stress is a part of life, you only have to step outside the door in the morning and there can be something new that comes along to get on your nerves, it may be before you even step out of the door (I don't know what your household is like!) so you need to look at the preventative measures, or be willing to accept the consequences in the long run. Anyway, here are some of the best ways of reducing stress in your life, some will be more effective than others but you need to find what works for you. How To Reduce Stress Levels Top Tips Meditate This one certainly doesn't suit everyone, primarily because of the environment that many people have to live in and I do understand this, but when you consider the benefits of meditation it far outweighs the time it takes and the effort required to create peace

and quiet for at least 10 minutes. This isn't an easy thing to do either, it is something that requires strict practice in order to master and gain the full benefits, but believe me when I say this, even taking a minute to clear your mind of all thoughts and just focusing on your breathing will make a huge difference. Focus on your breathes, slow it down and count to 10 as you exhale, really become conscious of the process of breathing and focus on this and only this. Other thoughts will try to creep in and this is normal, but don't let this deter you, really concentrate and focus on this process. You may only be able to achieve this for a short amount of time but I promise you the more you practice, the easier it will become and the longer you will be able to meditate for. You want to know the number 1 most effective method of how to reduce stress levels, in my eyes, this is it. Develop a Positive Mind-set Now I am fully aware that you can't just go ahead and develop a positive mind-set overnight, but you can make the decision immediately to start guarding your mind against the more negative influences in life and making a conscious effort to watch how you speak. For example do you regularly run yourself down? Do you tell yourself that you can't do something when you have the potentially to do anything within and sometimes outside the laws of physics! Whatever you let into your mind will reflect the person you become, so start changing the
Exercise Regularly This is no secret really but it's one that so many people ignore, especially you business owners. (Don't try and tell me otherwise because I know it's true!) Exercise is a key element in the equation of knowing how to reduce stress levels, as the release of endorphins as a result of exercise has a massive impact on the way the body deals with stress and how you feel in yourself. The sudden release of endorphins, the bodies "happy hormone", explains why we get that high after you have finished training, how do you think that will impact the way you perform day to day activities, probably somewhat better? Designate Time to Relax Again this may seem overly simple, but I can tell you now that where I come from (the UK), as a nation we work the longest hours in Europe, so it's no surprise that we get very little time to ourselves. It's very important that we make the time to relax, whether that be a soak in the bath in the evening, a long walk on the weekend, 10 minutes of solid meditation or even lunch out with a friend to catch up. It's the little things that can have a profound effective on your stress levels and our mental health. These are some very effective and somewhat simple strategies that you can put into play in your life and massively reduce your stress levels, why not try a couple of them, stick to them on a planned and regular basis and see the results for yourself your working life will improve no end.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Warm Things for February
F
ebruary is often our coldest month and, hopefully, it will be very wet; but don´t forget it is also the warmest month – the month of love. The month when prices in florists' shops rocket as sales of red roses match sales of lucky red knickers for New Year's Eve. At the Garden Centre we are all, of course, passionate supporters of love but, maybe it's as you get older, you get more practical about it too! Horror – did I really

write that!! Anyway, for the loving but practical minded of you, here are a few different ideas for all your special people – surprise them, it's always a winner! For the sweet-toothed, and jam/chutney makers amongst you we have some really special fruit trees; these are the trees of our childhood, the ones we all still get nostalgic for even after all these years in Spain. Bramley apple, that queen of baking apples, apple pies, apple crumbles – sharp and
flavoursome for eating and juicing - reading is tasting! In 1809 a little girl called Mary Ann Brailsford planted an apple pip in her garden in the Nottinghamshire town of Southwell – this is the mother of all Bramley trees today but, sadly, she is dying of old age and honey fungus. Nowadays, in England, there are over 300 growers of Bramley seedlings – all from that original tree - and our trees have come from one of those growers. Around 83,000 tonnes of the fruit are grown

annually in Britain, so let's make a small enclave of them here too. We had these on offer two or three years back and everyone has come back and said how magnificently they are growing and cropping so you don´t need to worry if they are suitable – in the foothills, no problem. Bramleys are midseason flowerers and partially self-fertile; many other apples will serve as pollinating partners, eg. Golden Delicious, Granny Smith and Cox's Orange Pippin. And we have thornless blackberry plants to go with them!
straight from the tree. Over the years, we've been asked for damsons so often, so now we have the self-fertile Merryweather, the most widely-planted and popular damson. All of these trees are bare-roots and this month is perfect planting time.
This is the one that produces those long chocolate- coloured and chocolate-tasting beans. They are tough and slow growing – a real monster of a tree - but, once in production, you'll be making healthy chocolate bars for over 100 years!
We know you all love bare-roots; they are cheaper than their potted counterparts and settle in very quickly. So, in this month of red roses, we are bringing you an amazing array of bare-rooted roses in all colours, sizes, hardy teas, floribundas, climbers, ramblers and shrubs. Over 25

Previously dads could only take two weeks off but this has been increased to one month from the New Year. The new measure was meant to have come in three years ago, however it was delayed due to budget restraints. The government has finally brought in the change as part of its recent legislative pact with centre-right modernizing party, Ciudadanos. It is estimated that it will cost an extra 235 million euros a year to implement. The eventual aim of the agreement between the two parties is for time off for dads to equal the 16 weeks statutory maternity leave. MIGRANTS A preganat woman was among seven migrants sent to VelezMalaga hospital after a boat carrying 50 washed up on the Costa Tropical. Six others were also transferred to the Hospital
Comarcal de Velez-Malaga, where two were treated for hypothermia and four for abrasive wounds. Emergency services were called by a resident when she saw the boat on the shore line. The Guardia Civil, the National Police Corps, Maritime Rescue, Policia Local and the Red Cross all rushed to the scene. The migrants are thought to have travelled from sub-Saharan Africa.

as many of the hairs as possible being left to float off in the air. Treading on the caterpillars does not destroy these toxic hairs. And anyone thinking of taking a pre-emptive strike against these nests should bear in mind that they too are full of caterpillar hair, which can easily fall out when disturbed. Exposure by humans has been known to cause a severely itchy rash that can last up to three weeks, temporary blindness and/or respiratory problems. Take appropriate precautions or hire a professional.

the ground for long distances so the menace may be apparent far from the nearest pine tree.
Dog owners are being given their annual warning about the appearance of caterpillars which can cause serious problems for their pets. The nests of the Pine Processionary moth began appearing, earlier than usual, by the middle of last month, high up in the branches of pine trees. These look like balls of cotton wool or candy floss but each is actually full of up to 200 maturing caterpillars.
Unfortunately, the inherently curious nature of dogs and cats may lead them to investigate these unusual creatures. If a pet was to sniff, lick our bite these caterpillars, it would almost certainly suffer a severe allergic reaction which, in the worst scenario, can cause airway closure and death. Other, luckier pets have lost part of their tongues after licking a caterpillar.
Soon, the creatures will be ready for the next stage of their development and will fall to the ground where they will begin their annual march into underground burrows. Here they will remain dormant until summer when they emerge as harmless moths. The caterpillars get their name because they undertake this march in single file lines and follow one another, much like a religious procession. The danger for pets, as well as humans, is because, at this stage of their lifecycle, they possess an unusual defence mechanism. Processional Caterpillars are covered in fine white hairs which can cause at least skin irritation and at worst anaphylactic shock. The caterpillars can travel along

The symptoms of exposure to caterpillar hair are excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, difficulty in breathing and/or white spots in the mouth or tongue. If you think your pet is suffering from these symptoms, vets recommend that the animal's mouth is flushed out with as much water as possible and that the animal is taken immediately for emergency treatment. Avoid contact with the animal's saliva because the toxin can affect humans as well. The young, the elderly and those who suffer from toxic allergies should be kept well away. To minimise the problem, farmers cut down the nests and then burn them in a metal bucket to prevent
If that was not enough to worry about, the unusually warm weather is likely to bring an early return of other pests including fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. In order to protect our pets, owners need to remain vigilant with regular flea and tick treatments and remember to replace Scalibor collars if they have worn for six months or longer.
