Valentine's Day should be celebrated by all not just by couples. In some parts of the world Valentine's Day is observed as a day for expressing love between family members and friends, rather than that of romantic couples. Some traditions include leaving lollies and gifts for children and others include acts of appreciation between friends. Personally I think this is a great idea so no one is left out! Inside the magazine this month we advertise two great events one in February and one at the beginning of March the first a night with ABBA and the second a Rock evening. Tickets are selling well but if you want to try and win yourself some tickets see page 32 and we look forward to hearing from you and even seeing you there! In addition to these music nights there are some fabulous Art exhibitions in Competa at the Galeria Luz de la Vida from mid February to mid March see page 66. Enjoy and Keep Reading The Editor

round 40 regions from across Europe have analyzed how they would be potentially hurt by Britain’s exit from the European Union in a new study coordinated by the European Committee of the Regions, the body which represents these regions in the EU. The document, which EL PAÍS had access to, emphasizes the “current uncertainty” in Brexit negotiations between London and Brussels and anticipates “immediate effects on commercial trade and the movement of people,” including tourists. Around 10,000 Spaniards cross the border daily to work in Gibraltar. Spain provided the greatest input in the text, with eight regions outlining their concerns. Catalonia however, while one of Spain’s wealthiest regions, did not participate.

missing with her mother, Jessica Richards, since last summer, is the subject of care proceedings. At a hearing in the family division of the high court in London on Friday, Mr Justice Hayden said the girl was found by police in Spain on Thursday. He also indicated that plans were in place to return Elliana to England in the next few days. After the hearing, Eileen Doyle, her paternal grandmother, said she and her husband Sean were “over the moon”. The judge had praised the couple, whose son Craig is Elliana’s father, for the efforts they had made to trace their granddaughter. He also praised the work of British and Spanish police and Foreign Office staff. Elliana disappeared from her London home with her mother, who has mental health problems, after social services staff at Barking and Dagenham council intervened.
Maria Miras Puigpinós was found guilty of offending moral integrity. The post was written after a TV debate in which Ms Arrimadas defended her stance against Catalan independence. Ms Arrimadas, who heads the Catalan wing of the liberal unionist Citizens party, said it was "hate speech". Miras Puigpinós, 45, posted the comment after the television debate in September. She has since deleted her profile and apologised to Ms Arrimadas. Miras Puigpinós' post also made homophobic comments towards the leader of the Catalan Socialists, Miquel Iceta. Only Ms Arrimadas complained to the police. "I'm going to report this woman. Not only for what she said against me, but also for all the women that have been raped," Ms Arrimadas said on Twitter at the time. After learning about the comments, Miras Puigpinós' employer sacked her. Miras Puigpinós has accepted the fourmonth suspended sentence. It was suspended on the grounds she does not reoffend within the next two years and attends an equalities and human rights course.

THE 5 MOST EXPENSIVE HOTELS IN BARCELONA Ideas of Places to Stay The Arts Barcelona The Arts Barcelona, or to give it its full name the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Arts Barcelona, overlooks the magnificent Port Olimpic and is an incredible sight in itself. With 5 different dining areas ranging from the 'Chic informal' Bites to the 'Jacket and Tie' Enoteca there is something for everyone's tastes. Full housekeeping twice a day, babysitting on request and a complimentary overnight shoeshine and morning paper give the Arts an air of extravagance and the terraced gardens, outdoor swimming pool and numerous bars combine to make this a reassuringly expensive hotel to stay in during your trip to the beautiful Barcelona. The Barcelona Hilton The Barcelona Hilton seems mainly geared towards business and business meetings and is a modern looking 11 floor building situated right in the middle of Barcelona giving superb access to the businesses and tourist areas associated with Barcelona. The advantages that the Hilton boast are very business orientated with computer and Internet points in

every room, a work desk and chair and voice mail messaging are standard in every room. The vast array of meeting floors, executive rooms and executive lounges make it ideal for the travelling businessman. The Claris The Claris is a very luxurious hotel and is aimed at guests who like the finer things in life, in particular fine art. Various superb examples of exquisite art are littered around the hallways of this converted palace and also in the rooms. Booking is almost impossible without years of notice but the sculptures aged from the 2nd through to the 7th century as well as 300 year old furniture make this a truly lavish hotel for lavish wallets. The Ritz What city in the world would be complete without a Ritz adorning one of its more exclusive streets. By staying at the Ritz you know that you are in for a real treat and the Ritz in Barcelona is no exception. Now called the Palace Hotel, it features Scotch bars, beauty halls and boutiques so the only reason to leave your hotel is because you are in Barcelona and there's just as
much to see outside the four luxurious walls of the Ritz hotel. It also features a business centre that is more than lavish enough to hold executive business meetings in. Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel A grand name for a grand building. An incredible combination of modern interior design and architecture you will be enthralled before you've even set foot in your room. The 8 floor building housed on Barcelona sea front features incredible works of art and you will be met by a massive piece just behind reception as you walk in. With a large and impressive collection of art the Grand Marina is another hotel designed for people with a love for fine arts. The 278 rooms offer probably the cheapest of these hotels in no small part due to the fact that the Grand Marina was only founded in 2002. While a relative newcomer to the market though, the Grand Marina has a more than slightly impressive list of top class services to offer its discerning guests. Make the most of the more affordable price tag because it is sure to increase in time as the rooms are already nearly always full. Matt Goldman

CARNIVAL IN SPAIN
Each city and region of Spain has a different style of carnival !
I
n Spain, the carnival season takes place in late February or early March, usually during the week leading up to Lent. Regions across Spain organize carnivals and fiestas, most involving music and dancing. Spaniards dress in colorful, traditional costumes and take to the streets to celebrate the season. The Spaniards have organized carnivals since medieval times, although General Franco outlawed these events for 40 years, starting in 1938, during his dictatorship. Each city and region of Spain has a different style of carnival with its own individual atmosphere and ambiance.
The carnival opens with a flamboyant procession of floats and musical groups through the streets of the city. It’s traditional to dress as a member of the opposite sex for the procession. The ritual of burying a sardine – entierra de la sardine – marks the end of the carnival. Participants bury a large effigy of a sardine, before lighting a bonfire and setting off fireworks.
preparing for its famous carnival celebrations. If you have an costume and are up for a good time then you're ready to enjoy this unique and animated celebration.
The Cadiz carnival is known throughout the world as a huge street party. Eleven days of nonstop fun, originality and, more than anything else, mass participation. carnival, the groups that compete in the Falla Theatre competition begin their rehearsals, and the carnival atmosphere is already underway. Various carnival groups organise open-air gastronomic events where they play their repertoire of humorous songs in public and where you can also sample typical Cadiz produce. The songs are usually humorous, providing an ingenious critique of events that have made the news over the course of the year. The Falla Theatre competition sees more than 100 groups taking part, with highlights including particularly the popular chirigotas. It is a fantastic spectacle, packed with humour, music and colour. The Grand Finale is one of the main attractions of the fiesta: it is held on the first Friday of Carnival and lasts until the following morning. That's when the great explosion of carnival high spirits overflows onto the city streets.
The groups that have taken part roam the teeming streets of the old town singing their compositions and, on Sunday and Monday, take the stage to perform the Carrusel de Coros. Fancy dress is obligatory at the Cadiz Carnival. Whether you do it alone, as a couple or in a group, it is essential to wear a costume, at least on the first Saturday and during the parades. There are two parades where the public become an active part of the multi-colour cavalcade. The Gran Cabalgata (Great Parade) is on the first Sunday. It proceeds down the avenue at the entrance to the city and attracts tens of thousands of people. The second is the Cabalgata del Humor (Comedy Parade), which goes through the old town on the last weekend. The “charangas ilegales” are another characteristic element of the Cadiz Carnival: they usually convene in
the Plaza de las Flores. These are families, groups of friends or workmates whose repertoire of songs compete for humour and laughs with the “official” groups. Open-air parties, fireworks, fancy dress dances and endless additional activities all ensure that the fun doesn't stop for a moment throughout the celebrations. Sitges Carnival Sitges, in the north of Spain, has a large gay community, and the town hosts an extravagant carnival each year. The Carnival King leads a sequence of processions during the week-long schedule of events. To signify the end of the carnival, the residents of Sitges dress up in mourning to kill (symbolically) the Carnival King. The Sitges Carnival has a more adult atmosphere than many of the other Spanish fiestas that take place during carnival season.

People discovered that breaking the skin of the grapes allowed the yeasts, which naturally gathered on ripening grapes, to mingle with the juice, thus starting the fermentation process that turns grape sugar to alcohol. Beer brewing became possible with the establishment of agricultural society and the cultivation of cereals such as barley and wheat. Around 4000 BC, the Sumerians discovered the effects of drinking gruel that had been left to ferment. This ale became more alcoholic once brewers began malting the barley. Germinating the grain, then drying and heating it so that the starch turned to sugar, produced a more powerful fermentation and stronger flavor. In northern Europe, where the cultivation of wine grapes was unknown, but where grain flourished, brewing probably developed independently. It was a French doctor who discovered that yeast is the microorganism responsible for the fermentation process. Beer also reduced the risk of cardiovascular death.
As with tea vs. coffee, it is uncertain whether the relative healthfulness of beer vs. wine might be due to social and economic factors. Wine drinkers were found to have higher IQs, more education, higher socioeconomic status, and a better diet than beer drinkers. A recent study corrected for such factors finds no difference between the two.

BATTLE OF THE ORANGES A different type of Carnival !
B
attle of the oranges involves around half a million kilograms of oranges. Yes, this is the Battle of the Oranges. It takes place in the city of Ivrea, and it presents an organized event steeped in history. Basically, it is a story about people rebelling against the cruel and tyrannic government – now transformed into a carnival that attracts around 100,000 spectators every year. Anyone can become a spectator, but there’s a thing you must take into consideration – you can suffer serious injuries, so for those who are not so enthusiastic, we strongly suggest relaxing and watching the battle from a distance. It’s, of course, important to wear a hat, or head wrap, because being a bit away from the battle won’t guarantee that you’ll be completely safe.
The battle of the oranges usually starts on Sunday around 2 pm ending with the judges’ decision on which team won this year’s battle.
The Lady, the miller’s daughter, is represented by a woman dressed in a red and white dress who throws yellow flowers to her admirers.
Citizens of the town Ivrea consider this carnival to be an important part of their culture and like to describe this battle as a “liberating” event.
This is surely among the most unusual carnivals you will find, not only in Europe, but in the whole world.
HISTORY If we look to the past, we’d see that this carnival is connected to the Lord of Ivrea’s attempt to take the virginity of the miller’s daughter on the eve of her wedding, sometime in the 12th or 13th century, as the legend goes.
It is definitely one you will remember.
But she made a bold move – a strike of the sword, and set the town free from his oppression.
BASIC INFORMATION When: 8 – 13 February 2018 Where: Ivrea, Italy Map: Ivrea on Google Maps Official website: storicocarnevaleivrea.it Hotels: Hotels in Ivrea
Later on, the townspeople battled the Lord’s henchmen, so today, this unusual carnival is a recreation of the battle between the Lord’s followers and the so-called commoners.

Valentines Feature 2018 Gift Ideas and Local Places to Celebrate on February 14th
VALENTINES DAY What is its Origin?
E
ver wondered how February 14 became, the day on which we celebrate and explore love in all its many ideals, Valentines Day.
There are many differing opinions on how Valentines Day started.
Another story points to Christianity in 496 A.D outlawing the pagan Lupercian Festival and replacing it with a day in February to honour the martyr St. Valentine.
A third story as to the origin of passing out cards stems from a French Count who was captured One story say that when the and imprisoned in London. From Roman Empire reigned, a festival his cell he wrote his wife letters, every February was held in including a passionate set of honour of the God of Fertility and poems which he sent to her in during this time, young men would February. choose their mate. For hundreds of years, Valentines Day has been a day of symbols. You can hardly go through the day without seeing a rose (as a symbol to Venus, the Goddess of Love), images of doves and lovebirds (who mate for life) or hearts. The heart was thought to be the centre of all emotion. People believed that when they gave a heart, they were truly giving all of the love and emotion that they possibly could give. Its past aside, Valentines Day is the second the most popular card sending holiday just behind Christmas with one billion a cards sent a year. When the calendar turns to February, we start to think of love. February has for centuries been designated the month for lovers, with the primary celebration being on February 14, St. Valentines Day. We send cards, flowers, and candy and our children give out Valentines in school. Valentines Day reminds us to tell our loved ones just how much we care about them. Bud smith

MORE IDEAS FOR VALENTINES DAY! Need some more ideas?
V
alentine's Day is quickly approaching, a day that each year puts fear into the hearts of men. Every year, you promise yourself that next year; you are going to do something different. If you still do not have any creative ideas for a special surprise, do not panic. Here are some Valentine's Day gift ideas (many inexpensive) that are sure to please your love on that special day. Balloon Surprise This one will require handwritten notes to your Valentine. Phrases like "I love you", "Thanks for being you", or "You mean more to me than anything" are good as well as sayings that have special meaning only to the two of you. You can write short memories of fun things you did together, a memorable vacation or a special moment you shared, like the birth of a child. Once you get the notes written, cut them into small sections. Make sure each note is small enough to be folded and placed in a balloon. You can purchase a small helium tank and balloons at most party stores. Take a balloon, insert a note into it,
58 The Grapevine
and then blow it up. When your Valentine comes home, have her pop each balloon to read your message of love. Recreate Your First Date Unless it was just a total disaster, your first date probably holds a lot of sentimental value for both you and your loved one. What better Valentine's Day surprise could there be than to recreate the first date, a time when you first fell in love? Go to the same restaurant, rent the first movie you watched together, take her dancing to the same bar whatever you did on that first date, make it happen again. Even if it was a disaster, you can recreate it, making it better the second time. Getaway Trip This one will require more money and a little preparation, but is sure to be great fun for both of you. Plan a secret weekend vacation. If you have kids, arrange for babysitters without letting your love know about it. Book the airline tickets, make the hotel reservations and when Friday rolls around, surprise her by having her bags packed, ready to go. Las Vegas is a great getaway
Romance Scavenger Hunt Buy small presents like a bag of candy kisses, a bottle of her favorite perfume or a single rose. Then create a few presents of your own such as a handwritten poem, a compact disc of special songs, or a handmade Valentine's Day card. Write clues that will be attached to each present, telling her where the next present can be found. Make the last present something that will last a while like a picnic dinner, a bottle of champagne hidden close to the fireplace or lingerie in the bedroom. Chocolate Fun If you both love chocolate, this can be a very fun and sexy idea. Make a batch of chocolate pudding and feed it to each other sitting by the fireplace. You may want to place a blanket or something on the floor in case it turns into a playful food fight. To spice it up, remove one article of clothing each time you feed your loved one and ask her to do the same. This can even lead to a romantic shower for two, so have candles ready in the bathroom. As you can see from these ideas, Valentine's Day does not need to be anything extravagant. It just takes a little effort and creativity on your part and you can turn this Valentine's Day into one that your special someone will remember forever! Sara Fox

VALENTINES DAY IDEAS FOR THE MAN IN YOUR LIFE Need some ideas for men?
T
o think of Valentines Day ideas for your boyfriend can be quite a riddle for a woman. Often women say that it is difficult to find the right valentines day gift for a man because he either already has everything, or maybe it just generally appears harder to find a gift for a man. But do not give up. Follow some of my tips and you will find perfect valentines day gifts for him. With a man, you need to digg deeper to find out what he would really enjoy.
on his own if you don't share his movie taste. This gift can be about him being able to fully enjoy it by himself. Many men also enjoy reading books or specialized magazines. As mentioned before, you digg a little deeper into his interests and find something related that he does not have. Reading some book reviews will help to find out what other people interested in that topic though about it.
First, ask yourself this simple question: What does he really like? What makes him smile? What gets him excited? Does he enjoy an old whisky or mature wine? Find a good quality bottle for him and you will see that he will be more than pleased.
My favorite "Valentines Day ideas for boyfriend" tip is getting a watch for him. It is a little more serious but it all depends on your relationship. For a man a watch is an excellent piece of jewelry. It is a really special gift that your man will be proud of, especially when it comes form the lady that he loves.
Maybe your husband, partner or boyfriend likes movies. What genre or style he enjoys? Horror, thrillers, silly comedies or documentaries? He will be enthusiastic about your DVD gift, even if he has to enjoy it
Many men like very stylish golden or silvery watches but perhaps even more of them absolutely love sports watches. Mainly those with a number of cool features. They get really enthusiastic about it and are

able to spend whole days trying out how what works. A watch is a great gift. Mentioning the gadgets, most of the man simply love them all. Fantastic gift idea could be the latest iPod, the cool Kindle (if he likes to read), GPS navigator, good model of a digital camera or a set of wireless headphones. A man is never disappointed with electronics but make sure to find out about the latest model. After you have chosen the gift, take some time to wrap it nice - you can go for a cool manly style wrapping or something that will be recognizable as coming from you. Any nicely wrapped gift looks more appealing. It just grabs the attentionHealth Fitness Articles, and he did not even see the gift yet. My very last "Valentines Day ideas for boyfriend" advice is: do not forget a Valentines card for him. This day is still about the message of love! Write there something from your heart.

on commission base, she 'tunes in' to the energy of the room or the person, inspired by this input she creates a very personal 'mandelapainting'. Dutch artist Linda Roffel has been fascinated by colour and shape as a means of expression for a long time. She uses that fascination to create sensual portraits of the backs of women. Using Acrylic paint and only a palette knife – she usually works with four pigments at a time: grey, white, brown, yellow and sometimes red. With these deceptively simple ingredients she creates structure, depth and transparency in her images. Three of her works will be shown in the gallery.

after all which provide the hams most likely to be found in bars, restaurants and indeed in the home. Although pretty mundane compared to their black footed cousins, the "common" Serrano ham provides that unique taste of the real Spain, not likened to anything else.
SERRANO HAM From Birth to Consumption
T
he Serrano Ham is one of Spain's most outstanding food products and one of the things that Spain is famous for. The word "serrano" in Spanish refers to the sierra, or mountains. Jamón Serrano is traditionally cured in mountainous environments where very cold dry winters, low humidity and an abundance of fresh air are a prominent feature. These conditions are essential if you want to produce a true Serrano Ham.

The Serrano hams. The serrano ham comes from the 'white pigs'. The meat they produce results in a high quality ham, deep rooted in tradition. It is these pigs
How is the ham cured? From November the traditional "matanza" or sacrifice of the pigs takes place. After this the fore and hind legs of the pigs are prepared for becoming the Serrano ham. The first process is known as the salting where the hams are packed in piles of salt to aid the preservation process. The amount of time the hams remain in the salt depends on the size of the ham but it is generally around 24-48 hours per kilo. This first stage is regulated very carefully to ensure the hams are not left in the salt for too long. The next stage of the curing process is called 'asentamiento.' This is when the salt is cleaned off and the hams are hung for an initial period of 1 to 2 months. During this time the temperature remains between 5 and 10 degrees with a humidity of 75-80%. This first stage is important because the moisture is dried out which means the ham and the salt infuse together to concentrate the flavour. The hams are continued to be hung (traditionally on knotted rope) for a minimum of 12 months. During this time the hams begin to take on the "cured" qualities, yellow fat and dark red meat . The slow curing is essential to allow the hams to adapt to natural conditions which is why cold dry winters and low humidity are essential to create a perfect serrano ham. During the beginning stages of this process the hams will be covered in a mould which is essential to the curing process, enhances flavour and helps make the Serrano Ham what it is. The final stage of the curing process is called 'maduracion' and takes place during the last month or

so. During this all important last stage, temperature and humidity are increased considerably to allow the fat to filter evenly through the ham, further concentrating the flavour.
Another method is to smear a little olive oil over the meat before covering.
Always store and serve your ham at room temperature. Keep your ham somewhere cool, dry and airy. By the time the hams reach the final Serrano hams should never be kept stage of the curing process, the in the refrigerator, even after meat will be perfectly cured and carving has begun. Once you've removed the rind, you can begin slicing. Again, using traditional Spanish "tools" is the only way to ensure the ham is cut correctly. The Spanish ham knife or "jamonero" (same as the stand) is long, narrow, flexible and very vary sharp. It is essential to use this type of knife to achieve the all important wafer thin slices of ham. You know you are on the right track when you can see the blade through the slices you are cutting. Always start at the narrowest part of the ham as here there is very little fat so this is the part that will dry out first. Using your flexible ham knife, cut along the ham as straight as possible. When you have removed the meat from this section, turn the ham over and repeat the process on the other side. When both sides are finished you can work on the tip of the ham, always cutting along the length of the bone. The tip of the ham has a slightly stronger taste because while the hams are hanging during curing, this is where the fat and salt concentrates. When you have removed all the meat you can also "scrape" the bone with a sharp knife to get the last of the meat from the fibula. The remaining bone can be used to make a lovely stock, ideal for soups and stews. Eating your Serrano ham. After carving, it is time to enjoy those wafer thin slices of your delicious ham. The best way is to serve on a plate with a drizzle of olive oil. Ideal partners to Serrano Ham are almonds or chunks of melon. Article written and supplied by Gayle Hartley. A
t Viveros Florena, we've all become great fans of the sapindus mukorossi aka Chinese soapberry tree. Papa Noel – in his green guise – was kind enough to bring us all little sacks of soapnuts. Now many of you might think that's a very strange present but we all got excited because not only are they a great gift for us, they also are for the planet. Soapnuts, in case you've never heard of them, are a 100% natural, non-polluting and compostable alternative to laundry detergents and synthetic soaps. They contain no chemicals, foaming agents, parabens, bleach or phosphates. They are cruelty-free and zero waste. And, strange as it may sound, I'm not sad about all this. I've long been an advocate and practitioner of the natural route though I'm not a vegetarian or vegan and I love a glass of wine, or several! But when you read that there are some 84,000 chemicals out there in our shops and a large number of them we use daily, you have to stop and think. Women are particularly vulnerable because we use more personal body products; again it is reckoned that an average woman uses 168 chemicals on her body every day and that is without touching any household cleaning
products or eating anything! So I long ago hopped off the train and now use natural as much as I reasonably can. Back to soapnuts. The soapnut tree originates in China and northern India though it is now predominantly planted in India and the foothills and mid-hills of the Himalayas. It's a genus of about 12 shrubs and trees, the lychee being the one we would most readily recognise. It requires a relatively deep soil and frost-free climate when it will make a good-looking, tall, pinnate-leaved, deciduous tree, up to about 25m, or taller in ideal conditions, with a deep tap root. Happy at altitudes ranging from 200m up to 1500m, it is one of the most important trees of tropical and semi-tropical areas of Asia. Its creamy-white (sometimes tinged with purple), bi-sexual, scented flowers appear during late spring and early summer with the green-yellow leathery-looking fruits appearing during July; harvesting is

spread through October to February. A cloth is spread under the trees to catch the blackening and ripening fruits as they fall; the shells are then washed and dried ready for use. Many of the seeds (between 1 and 3 to each fruit) are re-planted for sustainability. It takes 9 years from sowing to first commercial harvests but then it will remain productive for 90 years and produce annually around 30kg of fruit – that is a lot of soapnuts! The wood of the tree is hard and light creamy-yellow; it is used for rural building construction, for making farm implements and in charcoal production. The leaves are used for animal fodder. Soapnuts are amongst the list of Ayurvedic medicines and have a long history of medical use primarily to treat head lice, dandruff, migraine, epilepsy, eczema, psoriasis and to inhibit tumour growth. They have gentle insecticidal properties too.

And the best news of all is that we are now stocking detergent soapnuts and other soapnut products in our shop at the garden centre. They come in a 500g linen sack, enough for 240 washes, for €10.50 – super cheap and vividly green! Four or five nuts are loaded into a mini linen sack and put in the drum of your washing machine and they can be re-used 4 or 5 times. When they are 'washed out' whizz them in a food processor, mix with liquid and you have a super organic insecticide. We're all converts and I know you won´t be disappointed with them. Occasionally you'll find a seed still attached to the husk, if you're lucky. Just for fun try scarifying it and soaking overnight in hot water then plant. They can take some time to germinate – up to 3 months – but then they grow quite rapidly, maybe 30cm per month whilst it is still very young. Plant out in a sunny and protected position (out of cold
winds) and use the grey water from your washing machine to water it – a perfect symbiotic relationship! And it literally grows on trees! PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ Mark and the gang at the Punta Lara Bar are pleased to announce the next Costa Animal Society (CAS) quiz being held on February 16 at 7.30pm. All regular quizzers and newcomers
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH Its 30 years since our branch was founded and we are happy to say that it is still going strong. One of the main movers to bring this about was Billy Beyts who served for 21 years in the army, finally as Brigadier before moving to Kenya and spending several years as a farmer. He moved from Kenya when the Mau Mau uprising happened. He became Chairman of the branch after its inauguration in 1988 and was a staunch supporter of the British Legion for many years. We are aiming to celebrate the 30 years and remember all those who have worked hard to maintain the branch since then. The first records of the branch are dated September 1988, and so, along with the 100 year commemoration of the end of WW1, the formation of the RAF in 1918, we have many events to remember this year. With that in mind we are currently planning for the next few months and details will be available as soon as we have organised these events. Information about our monthly lunches, or other events can be obtained from Vera ozzybaldwin@yahoo.co.uk Tel:952967200

alike are welcome to test their grey matter and join Quiz Hostess Laura for a fun evening. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced booking is recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673. CAS SHOP NEWS Now entering its second year at our new location, shop manager Karen would like to take this opportunity to thank all of her volunteers who have made the shop a tremendous success. Also, thank you to all the people who have donated items to the shop for resell, your generosity has greatly improved the lives of many animals under the care of the Costa Animal Society (CAS). Be sure to stop by in the middle of February as new stock will be changing to pink tickets and therefore all green ticket items will be half price. Don't miss out on some real steals. The CAS Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff CafĂŠ in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. We are open Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 2.00pm. We are always interested in hearing from people who would
like to join our shop volunteers. One four hour shift once a week makes a big difference. There are always two volunteers per shift making for a safe, relaxed, congenial atmosphere. For more information you can ring the shop on 689 314 350.
CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English, German or Spanish. And despite the tough times and uncertainties, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.

Tim was rescued from the Nerja campo back in October but it took nearly three months to get him prepared for his journey due to strict regulations in Norway.
CAS NEWS
W
ith the death of Karen O'Brien in November, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has lost one of its longest-serving and most active members. Karen and her husband Mike joined CAS not long after moving to Spain from the UK and volunteered their time to the charity for ten years, much of which was spent serving on the committee. Despite having three cats of their own, Karen became known as CAS's “Cat Lady,” always willing to take in any waif or stray who needed a home. Many a time, she and Mike were called out at all hours to rescue a family of kittens which had been cruelly dumped. The feline lodgers were then cared for until they were ready to go to a new, permanent home. Karen was also involved in many of CAS's fund-raising events, in particular the annual dinner dances which raised so much cash for the charity. While Mike went out to find sponsors, she was left with the huge task of pulling it all together. From booking the band to
94 The Grapevine
choosing the balloon table decoration, her attention to detail ensured that each event was a success. Even after she handed the reins over to new volunteers, someone else, Karen was still willing to help organise and advise. Karen's forthright input to the running of CAS will be sorely missed. She will also be greatly missed by the members ... and by the cats.
