NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update!

T

he obesity epidemic has been on the rise for years, with cases nearly tripling since 1975, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And the outlook for the future is equally bleak – and that includes Spain, a country that is famed for the positive effects of its supposedly Mediterranean diet. An investigation by the Mar de Barcelona hospital has found that 80% of men and 55% of women will be overweight by 2030. If the current trend continues, the researchers write, within 11 years more than 27 million people in Spain will be overweight. Being overweight can mean a higher risk of suffering a number of diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, stroke and cancer. The study, published in the Spanish Cardiology Magazine, points out that this epidemic will mean costs of €3 billion for the country’s health system. The issue, the experts state, is not an esthetic one, but rather a question of health. Being overweight can mean a higher risk of suffering a number of diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancer and other cardiovascular conditions.

oinciding with the holiday rental boom in Madrid, 48% of people between the ages of 18 and 35 continue to live with their parents. In no other region in Spain have property prices risen as much in the last year – 10.9% according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Nor does any other region have such high rental prices – €13.09 per square meter. This is a historic high, according to the online property platform Fotocasa. Of all the Madrid youths who moved out of the family home in 2017, 64.9% opted for an apartment rental. But low salaries, the proliferation of Airbnb-style platforms and the relentless rise in rent is making even this option almost as unattainable as a mortgage.

S

panish police have broken up a tennis match-fixing ring that is alleged to involve nearly 30 professional players, including one who played in the last US Open. The Guardia Civil said on Thursday that 83 people were implicated in the racket, among them 28 players in the ITF Futures and

Challenger categories. According to the force, those responsible for the alleged fraud were engaged in bribing professional players in order to profit from bets placed on fixed matches. “Fifteen people have been arrested, among them the heads of the organisation, and another 68 are under investigation,” the Guardia Civil said in a statement. “Of those 83, 28 are professional tennis players who have either been detained or investigated – one of whom took part in the last US Open.” The force said the operation had been prompted by complaints made by the international anticorruption group the Tennis Integrity Unit. Officers focused their investigation on a Spanish player and the network began to unravel. “A group of Armenian individuals used a professional player who served as the link between them and the other members of the network,” the statement said. “Once the bribe had been paid, the Armenians headed for the match venues to use their overwhelming muscle to make sure that the player kept their end of the deal. They then gave the order for bets to be laid both nationally and internationally.” The Guardia Civil said the scam had been operating since at least February 2017 and could have generated profits running into millions of euros.

T

wo men have been killed in a light aircraft crash in mountains in Spain. Pilots Simon Moores, from Westgate on Sea, and David Hockings, of Herstmonceux, were flying from Portugal to Kent on Wednesday. The Piper single-engine aircraft, owned by Mr Hockings, had been due to make a stopover in northern Spain. Spanish rescuers said two bodies were recovered from Hernio mountain in the Basque region. Mr Mooreswas one of the few aerial banner pilots in the UK. Mr Hockings, 67, ran an aircraft maintenance company called Cristal Air based at Spilsted Farm airfield at Sedlescombe, near Hastings.

HOMES ABROAD

An Interview With Their Local Representative Tine

I

Homes abroad also called Bolig-udland.dk (in Danish) they are the biggest Danish Real Estate Agency in Spain with 7 offices around Spain. They collaborate with many good agents all over Spain along with having their own regional agents and their own portfolio of properties for sale all over Spain. I met with Tine the representative for Homes Abroad in this area. We had a lovely chat and despite her having lived and worked in the Competa area since 2012 we had never properly chatted before and she really is very lovely! I can imagine her being exceptionally good with her clients. Tines experience of living, working and moving to the area allows her to be in a great position to provide invaluable advice and knowledge to her clients.

In 2007 Tine bought a Villa from Country Properties in Competa. She was adamant when searching for a home she wasn't going further from the coast than the village of Sayalonga. The agent suggested Competa and reluctantly she agreed to view a townhouse. First they went for a

14 The Grapevine

drink in the Plaza. Whilst sitting in the sun and soaking up the atmosphere of the village, she knew this was the place for her and went on to buy a villa. This is something Tine does herself with clients who are often reluctant to come up to Competa. She takes them to the plaza for a drink in the sun to understand why some many fall in love with the area and most feel the same as she did she explains. Life took a change for her over the following years after buying the townhouse; she split from her then husband and fell in love with her next door neighbour in Competa who she married recently in Denmark! In between she moved to Spain permanently and found employment at Country Properties Estate Agency. Tine was extremely happy working for this real Estate Agency for many years. Last year she decided it was time to step away from the company and focus more on herself. Country Properties had always collaborated with Homes Abroad and on finding out Tine, their contact had left, Christian the owner approached her and suggested she was their personal representative in the area.

Tine explained the Homes Abroad structure and website is exceptionally professional, there is buying advice that can be downloaded and is an informative website in general. They represent both the buyer and the seller and will provide help before, during and after the sale. Homes Abroad are extremely proactive with promoting properties on Facebook and attending Fairs. Homes Abroad have recently got back from attending a fair in Finland. Over the course of the year they will be attending a further 22 fairs all over Denmark and Finland. They are aiming for the UK, Norwegian and Swedish Fairs in the future. Finding a home is an important decision and Tine explained she prides herself on listening, researching and finding the right property for the right person. Having worked in the industry for 7 years she has built up a huge network of contacts and satisfied clients many of whom have become friends over the years. If you are looking to buy a home you need to have confidence in your agent's knowledge and ability and above all like them and Tine has all these attributes in bucket loads! See advert opposite

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS I Am A Foreigner And Wish To Purchase In The Costa Del Sol (Frequent Questions And Doubts)

I

n our first chaper we clarified the most common questions when a foreigner wishes to purchase a property in Spain. We know that purchasing a real estate property is not a difficult task, but it involves many other further legal and tax implications. We will try to clarify now the most common ones. 1. Is it recommendable to use a conveyance solicitor? It is the buyer's decision to use a solicitor or not, but there are many reasons to hire the professional services of a Spanish solicitor specialised in real estate law. The solicitor knows better than anybody the local laws and taxes so it is highly recommended to contact one because he will make the purchase process smooth, trouble free and 100% secure.

and utilities bills; etc. The key point is to carry out searches in the local council and in the land registry to get updated information on the property and confirm that everything is correct and that it can be purchased without any problems. The solicitor is the right person to do these searches and confirm that the property is in good legal condition to be purchased. In case the property belongs to an urbanization, it is essential that the community of owners confirms the property is up to date with the community rates. Otherwise, the buyer can be compeled to take over previous debts.

3.Which documents do I need to purchase a property in Spain? Buying a property in Spain is simple. The only documents 2. What information do I have to requested are an original and valid get about the property before (that is, not expired) passport or purchasing it? identity card, to confirm the identity Before buying a property in Spain, of the buyer; and a NIE number there are some basic checks and (Tax Identification number for searches to be carried out: who is Foreigner), which can be obtained the legal owner; possible charges in the police offices in Spain. It is a or mortgages on it; that there aren't quite easy procedure. any debts regarding local taxes Please, be also aware that in order

16 The Grapevine

to transfer the necessary funds to pay the purchase price, it is necessary to have a Spanish bank account. Most of Law offices have a “clients account for this purpose, so the buyer who uses a solicitor will only need a personal bank account after completing the purchase. 4.Once the purchase is completed, do I have to do any further paperworks? When the purchase has been completed in front of a Public Notary, it is necessary to pay the Transfer Taxes (8 % of the purchase price) within 30 days, and to take the title deeds to the land registry so the ownership is registered. It is also necessary to change local taxes, water and electricity contracts, and community rates into the name of the buyer; as well as to order future payments by direct debit. A solicitor will be able to arrange all these matters in a speedy way and without problems. Another good reason for hiring one when buying your property in Spain. See advert opposite

Fuerteventura is a popular destination for fans of water sports, thanks to the prime wind and wave conditions that make it the perfect place to go windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and surfing. The conditions are especially good in winter due to decreased storm activity around the equator and tide levels, which mean smaller but more even waves – perfect for beginners. If you’re not a water sports lover, there are still loads of fun things you can do in Fuerteventura. Why not spend a day exploring the sand dunes of Corralejo Natural Park, visiting the island of Lobos or even doing a day trip to the nearby island of Lanzarote? For those just looking to escape the cold and relax in the sun, there are plenty of beaches all along the coast of Fuerteventura where you can do so. rchgrove Services is a newly formed transport business owned and run by retired police officers Steve & Gail Gilkes with bases in Archez and Chalgrove, Oxfordshire, UK. Steve provides the lifting, carrying and driving while Gail largely takes care of the admin but will also been seen ‘hands on’ when necessary. The couple have owned a house in Archez for six years since finishing their thirty year police careers and are now embarking on their first joint business venture. Previously Steve has run a small but successful part time business deck building, patio laying and other garden projects. He intends to combine this type of work with the driving when in the UK but is adamant that the transport side of things takes priority. Gail enjoyed a

hugely successful playing career in lawn bowls and represented England on over fifty occasions. She is very much a people person and is looking forward to making many new acquaintances. From taking a letter to your ‘homeland’ for posting through parcel delivery and collection to full house clearance and removals, Archgrove Services provides all your transport needs. They have already delivered from the UK to Spain and back with very positive reviews. At short notice they were also able to move a complete house to store and its owner and six cats to their new home recently. The van, a brand new Nissan NV400, will make at least one return trip to the UK each month with other work in between subject to customer needs. Trips to

Scandinavia, The Nederlands and any destination in Western Europe will also be happily undertaken. Any manner of goods can be transported and there are storage facilities along with delivery addresses for Amazon, Ebay and other companies available both in England and locally. The van will be modified in the very near future to accommodate pets and a trailer for extra items. Being police trained advanced drivers they are also the ideal people to go to should you want a vehicle relocating. All services are fully insured. Flexibility, friendliness and communication are the watchwords of this couple who, with their ‘can do’ approach, will do all possible to make your experience with them a good one Steve and Gail can be contacted by mobile, landline, WhatsApp, email or via their Archgrove Services facebook page.

SITGES CARNIVAL It’s Time To Party!

E

vent date: 28 February 2019 - 06 March 2019 Each year in the run up to Lent, Sitges comes alive with its most famous yearly celebrations - Carnival. The event is celebrated throughout Spain and indeed, the world. It marks the last chance to let your hair down and get up to mischief before the forty days of Lent begin.

over 2,000 participants.

Dijous Gras (Fat Thursday) at Sitges Carnival Event date: 28 February 2019 This is the opening of festivities. King Carnestoltes - the King of the Carnival arrives in a flourish of colour and activity. This signals the beginning of the week of fun.

Ash Wednesday - The Burial of the Sardine Event Date: 06 March 2019 This is the event that truly symbolises the end of the good times and the beginning of a period of abstinence. A large effigy of a sardine is carried to the beach and buried - there will be no consumption of delicious fish during the forty days of Lent. But don't fear, if you're lucky, you'll find large barbecues on the beach where you will get your last chance to try a few of the little treats.

Rua de la Disbauxa ('The Debauchery Parade') Event Date: 03 March 2019 As its name suggests, this is a risqué and no-holds-barred parade. It has been known to include up to forty floats carrying

38 The Grapevine

Rua de l'Extermini ('Extermination Parade') Event Date: 05 March 2019 This is the parade to mark and mourn the end of the celebrations. It is often jampacked with drag queens dressed all in black to mourn the end of the party and the death of the King of the Carnival.

THE OPEN MINDED CITY Sitges has for a long time been a LGBTQIA capital of Europe, and offers hedonistic experiences for everybody willing to party and play with an open mind. Carnaval has also traditionally been a week of release and letting one’s hair really down before the 40 days and 40 nights of Lent’s abstinence. Combine the occasion and the location and you’ve really got the perfect ingredients for a wild night. This fantastic party is famous for its colourful parades, costumes, masks, folk dances, timeless traditions, and of course, delectable gastronomy! Although the Sitges Carnival may not be as big as the popular celebrations of the same name in Brazil, this particular Spanish fiesta attracts over 300,000 people each year.

FEBRUARY FIESTAS It’s Carnival Season

F

ebruary is the start of the Spanish carnival season which offers some of the best celebrations anywhere in the world easily rivalling those of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The best are to be found in Tenerife and Cadiz where the street parties are world renowned. Colourful processions and extravagant costumes abound in many cities and usually commence on Ash Wednesday. The Cadiz carnival is arguably one of the most extravagant parties around lasting some 10 days. A huge paper-mache sardine is mourned ( noisily ) as it makes its way along the Cadiz streets to its final resting place! If you are planning to visit the Tenerife and Cadiz Carnivals be careful when planning your trip as the local accommodation is usually booked solid well in advance. Carnival in Cadiz Cadiz is a beautifully serene city on the Andalucian coast known for its elegance and grace. All of this is suspended for one week every year for what is one of the

46 The Grapevine

largest Carnival celebrations in the world. Cadiz’s carnival is the one of the most extravagant parties that you can attend in Europe. This fast, exuberant burst of revelry and colour is centred on Shrove Tuesday, at the end of February or beginning of March, and it’s a celebration of life and excess. Get swept up in the excitement and get ready for the party of a lifetime. In total the festivities last for ten days which take in two weekends. Rooms are booked months in advance so be sure to plan your visit well ahead of time. The air in Cadiz is full of music during carnival. This music varies in terms of skill and style but with everyone playing their hearts out it’s hard not to enjoy it. Check out the ‘chirigotas’, officially recognised groups of ‘gaditanos’ (people of Cadiz) who wander the streets entertaining everyone with their funny songs. These songs satirize everything from pop stars to politicians and, even if you don’t speak Spanish, you can get into the swing of their jaunty tunes. If you develop a taste for their music and brand of satire, head to the ‘chirigota’

competition that takes place in Gran Teatro Falla. While ‘chirigotas’ usually set up in improvised locations like stairways and street corners the choirs (coros) are even harder to miss as they go through the streets in open carts accompanied by guitars and lutes. As if being in an open cart wasn’t enough, they have the most extravagant costumes in a carnival devoted to flashy (and sometimes flashing!) attire. In the streets you can also find a wide variety of improvisational theatre performed by ‘ilegales’, a term referring to just about anyone who fancies taking part. Head for C/ Ancha and C/ Columela as well as the neighbourhood of Barrio de la Viña for some of the best spontaneous entertainment. For more modern musical fare head to the Plaza de Catedral for some of the Spain’s most popular rock groups. You may be surprised by the number of children running free during carnival but after a while it will cease to shock you. There are

To advertise call 637 028 873

plenty of children’s entertainments in the plazas and squares ranging from puppet theatre to the daily ‘Toronda’, the fireworks display that takes place in the Plaza San Juan de Dios. One thing you’ll notice is that the costumes are a lot less showy than the ones you might see in Rio. In Cadiz, which has a reputation as the funniest town in Spain, the emphasis is on satire and cleverness and you’ll see plenty of politicians and clergy being mocked. You’ll have the most fun by joining in which is easy as wigs and hats are sold on every corner. Leave your selfconsciousness behind and follow the crowds to find the best parties. Carnival in Cadiz ends with the Burial of the Sardine and you can join hundreds of “mourners” following the paper mache fish and loudly mourning its passage. Most understandable as no one wants to see the end of a great party! Carnaval in Tenerife The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a riot of colour and celebration held every year in February on the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife. This is one of the Canary Islands’ biggest celebrations and the history behind it is almost as fascinating as the event itself. Tenerife’s carnival is the second most popular of its kind in the world after the Rio de Janeiro carnival in Brazil, which Santa Cruz is twinned with, and dates back hundreds of years to the island’s earliest European settlement in the late 15th century. The Spanish conquest in 1494 brought with it many things from South America, like animals, produce, traditions and of

course, the carnival! Written accounts of this early carnival date back to visitors from the 18th century who reported seeing comparsas, live bands playing conga music from Cuba. Alongside the Cuban music was murga, a type of musical theatre from Uruguay, and rondall, medieval Spanish acoustic music, also popular in Mexico. These connections to South America have remained strong and visitors can still see these exotic types of music performed at the carnival today. Each year more than 250,000 people descend onto the pretty capital city of Santa Cruz for the carnival and in 1980, it was made a Tourist Festival of International Interest by the Secretary of State for Tourism. Then in 1987, the Guinness World Records declared the carnival the largest outdoor concert, and in 2000 it was voted the Carnival Capital of the World over Rio de Janeiro and London’s Notting Hill Carnival. Alongside the music, dancing and incredible floats which proceed through the streets of Santa Cruz, there are many special traditions like the crowning of the carnival queen, piñata, and the burial of the sardine, or ‘entierro del sardino’ as it’s known locally. The burial of the sardine is one of the oldest traditions and is held on the last day of the carnival. A giant paper sardine is carried through the carnival by dancers dressed as nuns, bishops and priests representing a funeral march. The big fish-shaped effigy is then burnt as sacrifice for the coming Lent celebrations. Since 1987, the carnival has had a different theme each year ranging from ancient Egypt to pirates, space and horror films, amongst many others. The 2016 event will have a 1980’s theme so if you’re planning a visit next year get your spandex, big hair and neon at the ready!

Other february Festivals The Gastro Festival Runs from around the third week in January through to the first week of February and is Madrid’s time of the year to celebrate Spain’s culinary culture. Here is chance to try out a huge range of national and international dishes held in restaurants and tapas bars located all around Madrid. Cocktail bars, gourmet shops, restaurants, museums, and art galleries are all incorporated in a city-wide gastronomic celebration. Our favourite is the Degustatapas a great way to try out as many tapas as you can eat for a one off fixed price or around 3€ , for that you get a drink of beer and one Tapa. The Almond Festival La Palma – Beginning of February Each year at the beginning of February when almonds are plentiful, the locals on the island of La Palma on Gran Canaria gather around the market squares to embrace the many virtues of this versatile nut. The fun includes participants competing to crush as many almonds as they can in 30 minutes. Participants and the spectators alike are entertained with live music from local orchestras and bands. Jumping the bonfires Celebrated in Arizkun, Navarra. Quite a spectacle seeing thousands of people who line the Arizkun streets ready to jump over bonfires. This unusual and colourful tradition dates back to pagan times and said to encourage fertility and ward off evil spirits. The locals dress up in special costumes that look like a sheepskin coat, adorned with black pots, wearing maypole style hats and carrying brushes.

REVIVE MASSAGE Massage. treat, or treatment?

R

evive Massage opened in Compéta during June 2018 aiming to offer a therapeutic massage service. As we enter 2019, we thought we'd catch up with Tanya, the Founder and Lead Therapist, to find out what's been happening with her Clinic. She told us, “It's been an interesting and challenging 9 months. Every day's a school day.” “Like any new business, building a Practice has been gradual. We haven't been booked solid every day from the start, however I now have a number of regular clients and a stream of bookings.” “Building good relationships with the people of Compéta and establishing partnerships with local leisure and hospitality businesses, coupled with good marketing, has been key to getting the business off the ground. The best marketing for this kind of business is word of mouth, so I make sure that every massage I give is excellent and is exactly what the client needs and/or wants.” One of the greatest challenges for any massage therapist is getting past the notion that massage is simply 'a treat', 'a luxury' or 'a

holiday indulgence. It's so much more! Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and wellbeing and there are different styles that focus on different issues. It is increasingly being offered for a wide range of medical conditions and situations and offers healing benefits including – · improved circulation; · increased muscle tone: · enhanced immune system; · nervous system functioning; · reduced blood pressure; · pain and muscle tension relief; · improved mood, intellectual reasoning and performance; · positive effect on conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, diabetes and migraine headaches.

following a massage, many clients can feel emotional and/or a little dazed. This is mainly as a result of the stimulation of 'feel good' hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin and endorphin; all natural healers. Tanya says that strong emotional response to massage is not uncommon and tells us, “It is a privilege to be able to help people in so many ways by offering a therapy that can offer so many wellbeing improvements.” To complement her massage therapy, Tanya will be offering a range of hand-crafted balms and lotions from March 2019. Tanya has recently moved to new premises at Calle Eusebio Garcia 6a, just around the corner from EGO and next to La Poseida del Cani, one of our new speciality B&Bs. Her premises may be difficult to spot right now, but new signage expected this month will make that much easier.

The healing power of touch Touching and being touched is instinctual; the simple act of placing the hands on the body can itself encourage a person to thrive. Massage offers safe, therapeutic touch that can improve alertness and relaxation, positively impact depression, and improve mental focus.

If you would like to book an appointment with Tanya, you can contact her on 00447710 488905, or find more information at www.revivemassage.es.

ORIGIN OF VALENTINES DAY How Did February 14th Come About?

ver wondered how February 14 became, the day on which we celebrate and explore love in all its many ideals, Valentines Day.

E

Christianity in 496 A.D outlawing the pagan Lupercian Festival and replacing it with a day in February to honour the martyr St. Valentine.

There are many differing opinions on how Valentines Day started.

A third story as to the origin of passing out cards stems from a French Count who was captured and imprisoned in London. From his cell he wrote his wife letters, including a passionate set of poems which he sent to her in February.

One story say that when the Roman Empire reigned, a festival every February was held in honour of the God of Fertility and during this time, young men would choose their mate. When a Emperor named Claudius came around, he outlawed all marriages in fear that the men would not be able to fight. Young couples still fell in love though and still wished to marry and they took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine who, understanding love, began to secretly marry couples. When Claudius found out, he had Valentine arrested and ordered put to death. While waiting in jail, Valentine began exchanging letters with the jailers daughter and soon had fallen in love with her. The day he was to be beheaded, he wrote her one last note and signed it: From Your Valentine. Another story points to

66 The Grapevine

At the turn of the century, a new form of Valentines Day card appeared the Penny Dreadful. Up until this point, cards were relatively expensive but the Penny Dreadful changed all that. They were just what the name implied, costing only one cent and completely bad. The cards were cheaply made, the artwork was amateurish and the colouring was uneven. On top of that the verses printed on them were not the most romantic of prose. They were more often insults, taking swipes at old maids, teachers and the like. Still their low cost kept them popular for years.

For hundreds of years, Valentines Day has been a day of symbols. You can hardly go through the day without seeing a rose (as a symbol to Venus, the Goddess of Love), images of doves and lovebirds (who mate for life) or hearts. The heart was thought to be the centre of all emotion. People believed that when they gave a heart, they were truly giving all of the love and emotion that they possibly could give. Its past aside, Valentines Day is the second the most popular card sending holiday just behind Christmas with one billion a cards sent a year. When the calendar turns to February, we start to think of love. February has for centuries been designated the month for lovers, with the primary celebration being on February 14, St. Valentines Day. We send cards, flowers, and candy and our children give out Valentines in school. Valentines Day reminds us to tell our loved ones just how much we care about them.

category and we are well known for having a great range of them, which we are constantly extending. Over the years we've noticed that many of you do not want to splash out on water too much; we're all realising it is becoming an increasingly threatened resource, so it makes sense to seek out these gems of plants and people do travel to us, from far and wide, to find them.

It sounds like a very tall order but, believe it or not, there are lots of plants that slot happily into this

They tend to have a soft palette range which blends well into the

They are perfect plants for banks, gravel areas and rocky outcrops. Ballota pseudodictamnus, Grecian horehound, false dittany. Native to Turkey and the Aegean Islands, it forms a small densely-leaved shrublet, 30cm tall but spreading to 1m across. The soft, woolly, greygreen leaves are accompanied by inconspicuous white and purple-lipped flowers. It becomes very drought resistant, tolerating very poor conditions. Hummocking against even salt-laden winds, it looks lovely when shimmering with dew or raindrops. Leucophyllum langmaniae, Texas sage is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico – a good indication of how tough it is! It forms a slow-growing but exceedingly dense and tough mounding grey-leaved shrub, ultimately to about 1.5m and wide. Its lovely lilac flowers are produced in profusion through summer and autumn. Plant it in full sun and irrigate infrequently or not at all once established. Nepeta x faassenii, Faassen's catnip. Our cat, Florence, has a passion for two plants – kiwi vines (he will turn them out of their pots and rub against the roots) and catmint when it is fresh and in new growth. Both send him into euphoric frenzies! Nepetas are some of our best perennials in drought-resistant gardens being long-lived, easy to grow, showy lavender-blue flowers and fragrant leaves, and resistant to most browsing animals – except cats – and an excellent source of nectar to bees and butterflies. N. faassenii is a sterile hybrid from the Dutch breeders J. H. Faassen forming an aromatic, spreading clump around 50cm tall with a spread of 1m. Flowering best in sunny positions, they will tolerate a wide range of soil types, ranging from poor stony ground to dry clay; waterlogging is their enemy. There's a lovely selection that I haven´t been able to find yet called 'Purrsian Blue',

smaller and, of course, even more desirable to cats. You have to have it just for the name! The oregano genus contains some 40 species native to Turkey, Syria and stretching

Leucophyllum

Antennaria dioica, charmingly known as pussy toes loves lean, gritty soil, full sun and very little water. It's a ground-hugging perennial that will spread a foliage mat to half a square metre but only 5cm or so Clusters of Langmaniae high. tiny white or pink flowers, looking like pussies' toes or pads, rise on stems to 30cm tall. It's a sweetie worth trying.

across the Mediterranean region and south-west Asia. The genus name comes from the Greek oros meaning mountain and gamos meaning beauty – beauty of the mountains. Many have great culinary value, whereas others are more ornamental but the nectar of all oreganums is highly concentrated, with oreganum vulgare registering the most concentrated sugar-rich nectar of any plant. Hoverflies hover constantly around it – try it next to your vegetables or roses because hoverfly larvae have a voracious appetite for aphids and will help keep your plants clean. Oregano laevigatum Herrenhauser is one I want to introduce you to. It is, of course, an origanum but not one we would greatly use in the kitchen; its culinary properties are not great, it has little aroma and taste, but it does look wonderfully decorative. Upright to about 50cm high with an equal spread, in a sunny position it has dark, sultry foliage with wiry black stems supporting neat minute pink flowers backed by deep purple calices. It's a lovely combination that is irresistible to bees and butterflies.

Good companions for these would be grasses – the lovely fluffy pennisetum villosum or dark copper-bronze pennisetum rubrum, steely grey-blue leymus arenarius and fluffy and flowing stipa tenuissima. Or, for something heftier, there's a huge range of phormiums with striped leaves – cream and green, burgundy or pink, cream, sage. Lots of lovely colour combinations to make your dry areas zing with colours that will softly draw the eye. We have all of these in stock, with lots more too so call in and see us soon.. CAS NEWS RETURN OF THE CATERPILLARS Dog owners are being given their annual warning about the appearance of caterpillars which can cause serious problems for their pets. The nests of the Pine Processionary moth began appearing, earlier than usual, by the middle of last month, high up in the branches of pine trees. These look like balls of cotton wool or candy floss but each is actually full of up to 200 maturing caterpillars.
