Its Valentines day this month don’t forget to get a present or buy a card and perhaps this year why not book a meal. Inside the magazine there are plenty of ideas for Valentines Day and some local restaurants are providing special Valentine meals. Now there is no excuse for you not to come up with something just a little bit romantic! Also, inside The Grapevine this month is a special focus on the village of Cómpeta. Its is a white village with a tremendous amount to offer in the way of restaurants, bars ,culture and history. Entertainment is wide and varied in the village, from the Spanish bands such as Vino y Pasas to English Pantomime performances. It is a great place to visit, to wander round the narrow back streets or to simply soak up the atmosphere having lunch in Plaza. It is also a nice place to live and the infrastructure has changed hugely in recent years. It now has a large municipal indoor pool and a soon to be completed indoor sports hall. Most recently a youth club has opened up next door to the post office. This is a new facility open on Friday nights for children over 10 years of age. Turn to page 19 to read more about the village. Finally, thanks to those of you who enquired over our new website service we look forward to working with you and we will be show casing these web sites in the magazine in future editions.

Valentine Roses T he word rose has been derived from the Roman word 'Rosa' which means red. Rose is not a term that is heard in contemporary times but it has its roots in prehistoric times too. Roses are popular since the Roman era during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Rose gardens in Asia are simply fabulous consisting of beautiful roses. Rose is a symbol of love but again to confess the true feelings of your heart, gifting your sweetheart with the right Valentines roses is very important

Valentine day rose bouquet falls into the category of the most romantic gift that lovers exchange. If you want to say the three magical words "I Love You", then the perfect way is to gift your someone special with a Valentine's Day red rose. A bunch of two roses indicates that the person wishes to tie the love knots forever as in he/she wishes to marry you. Different roses have different significances like red symbolizes deep love & respect, whereas pink signifies happiness, yellow represents that the person is your true friend. White roses are a symbol of peace and purity. If you don't know the person very well but wish to know him better and make friends with him, then the perfect rose for you is peach coloured rose. If it is the case of love at first sight, then the perfect choice is a purple rose. Flowers have the magical power to speak the language of your heart. When words do not suffice your purpose, then roses take over to play the part. So what are you waiting for, go and buy the perfect Valentine's Day Rose !

Cómpeta is one of the larger 'pueblos blancos' of the Málaga hills. It's reached by a winding road leading steeply up from the coast. You catch glimpses of it as you drive, a cluster of white houses backed by the magnificent Sierra Tejada, disappearing and reappearing around each bend. It has developed rapidly over the last few decades to become a thriving modern town, replete with facilities, yet it has retained its true Andalucian character.

Cómpeta A Walk Around Town Drive to Cómpeta from the coast and you'll be stunned by the beauty of its location. The area is dissected by steep ravines, but the valley sides are terraced for avocadoes, medlars, mangos and citrus fruit trees; the steeper slopes are covered with grapevines that green the hillsides throughout the summer drought, and there are olive groves, and clusters of almond trees. In front of you lies the natural park, its pine forests home to wild boar, genet and ibex, its high peaks the haunt of falcons, vultures and eagles. Now you head past a petrol station and reach the town. Pass by a park on your right and then, just after the bus stop and tourist office, take the right-hand fork uphill to the main car park. There's a cluster of shops, bars and banks here and it's where they hold the Saturday market. Park and wander along the road before turning right, uphill again: you will pass Cómpeta's rather grand town hall before you reach the main square.

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

Cómpeta's church, 'Nuestra Señora de la Asunción', is a handsome 16th Century building, with an instantly recognisable gold-topped bell-tower. From here at Easter the processions leave: gorgeously dressed statues of Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary and Jesus are carried out into the packed square on the shoulders of some 20 strong men. Here, too, the summer brings the riotous fun of the foam fiesta, the young and not-so-young dancing in sheets of soapsuds spurted from a foam cannon. And on the famous Night of the Wine there's seating and a stage for a grand flamenco performance. But today we'll resist the temptation to stop for a coffee…for now. Let's cross the square, aiming roughly east and uphill, as far as these winding streets let us. The tall houses have grilled balconies, filled with flowers; plant pots often cluster round doorways and in tiny plazoletas and patios; bougainvillea, geranium and many others bringing vivid colour into the heart of the white town. We eventually find a ravine like road bisecting the village; straight across will bring us to an excellent local history museum, but we turn left and take the steps up the 'ravine' to arrive (panting) in Plaza Vendimía. This is where on the Noche del Vino, the mural covered stand to the right features a demonstration of traditional grape crushing, the rest of the square taken up by dancing, music and Cómpeta wine!

WHAT'S ON IN CÓMPETA? Santa Semana – Easter week's dramatic celebrations, which sometimes include a full passion play - there are always processions, masses and music on Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Summer Fiesta – usually the last weekend in July, this is a three day marathon of fun, including lots of live music, a foam fiesta and a fair. Noche del Vino – 15th August This was traditionally goodbye to grape harvesters, who wouldn't come back from the farms until October. Now Cómpeta's Noche del Vino is recognised by official decree! There's a grape treading demo, flamenco fiesta, arts and crafts, free food – mijas (like cuscus), salted cod and fresh grapes. Oh – and free Cómpeta wine - 1500 litres of it! th

Noche del Reyes – held on the 5 of January (the night before Epiphany) the Three Kings parade through the village in a shower of sweets! PLUS Exhibitions, Live Music, Walks and Talks and Classes in everything from Spanish to Pilates! CHECK THE GRAPEVINE TO SEE WHAT'S COMING UP!

Cómpeta's History

Heading out on the level road we eventually pass the Hermita (Chapel) of San Sebastian, Cómpeta's patron saint. We reach a Tjunction and turn left: a few yards on is the Mirador de Cómpeta, a Gaudi-esque viewing point offering fabulous views over the town. We'll rest here a moment and take a picture. On that rare day it snowed dozens of photographers came up here! We are just below a road junction; you can go down the road towards Torrox to the south-east, or take the dirt track winding up into the natural park. From there you see the best view of the dramatic Sierra Almijara and pick up the ancient mule track that leads right into Granada province. Let's leave Granada for another day and walk back down to the Plaza Vendimía. This time we leave it by heading uphill to Plaza Carmen; we are near the top of the town, just below Cómpeta's well kept football ground. From here we will take a winding road west and downhill, to complete our circuit. Just before we come reach a level road there's a house with a turret and beyond it the footpath to Canillas de Albaida, a very lovely 40 minute walk away. Now we head left on the level, back to the main square. On this side we pass by (or just above) many facilities: from the medical centre and school to post office and brand new swimming pool. But we are thirsty now: we hurry along to the square for a glass of wine in one of the bars…and how about some tapas for lunch?

Along with vines, olives and almonds the Romans brought the name 'Compita', meaning crossroads, to the village; it's close to the lowest point between the Sierras Tejada and Almijara. This “Puerto de Cómpeta” was the main trade route into Granada. But it was Muslim invaders who developed the region. The first to conquer and settle were mainly Berbers from North Africa. They terraced the hills and created the wonderful system of 'asequias', water channels some of which are still used today. The towns they built were easily defendable mazes of narrow streets centred round a mosque. Change the mosque for a church and these are the 'pueblos blancos'. In 1487 the Catholic 'reconquest' took the region. Locals converted, perforce, to Christianity, but these 'Moriscos' were distrusted and persecuted. Eventually there was armed rebellion; one of the leaders was Cómpeño Martin Alguacil. When the uprising was crushed the Moriscos were expelled and their lands given to established Christians who didn't know the region, which became impoverished. However, Cómpeta's much loved wine and raisins came to its rescue; in the 18th and 19th Centuries grapevines becoming a virtual monoculture. Cómpeta's on a fault line and in 1680 an earthquake brought down the church tower. But that was nothing to the catastrophe of the 1880s. On Christmas day, 1884 another earthquake destroyed the new church tower and many homes. That was followed in 1885 by an outbreak of cholera. Then, in 1887, the grape blight phylloxera hit the vineyards. The village shrank, as many survivors emigrated to seek better fortune elsewhere. There are few accounts of Cómpeta's standing during the civil war. It was probably primarily republican and, along with the rest of Andalucía, suffered from Franco's vindictive response. But change was on its way. The 1960s brought the first tourists to the Costa del Sol.

Cómpeta Today Cómpeta has never looked back. Summer visitors and foreign immigrants brought an income to the town that saved it from outright dependence on either agriculture or coastal construction. The overall impact of change has been positive. Cómpeta has a thriving cultural scene enhanced by diversity; its restaurants displays a Spanish gastronomy complemented but not overwhelmed by other traditions – this is true for the town's commerce and culture as well. Most Competeños, Spanish or foreign, are friendly and tolerant – and why shouldn't they be, living in this jewel of a town!

Pet Travel U

nfortunately, at our clinic we still have many British pet owners that are not aware of what is required to travel to the UK with their pets. I always advise to prepare the paperwork, just in case they ever want to go back, as we have now had many cases of devastated owners that need to go back, but are unable to take their beloved pets with them. If the paperwork is not a hundred percent correct, the pets will be rejected at the border. Let me try to explain what exactly should be done, so you can move freely with your pets at any time. First of all, to travel within Europe (except the UK, Malta and some Scandinavian countries), all the pet needs is a European passport, a microchip and a rabies vaccine. This vaccination must be more than 30 days old if it is the animal's first rabies vaccine. This will be valid for a time span according to the manufacturer's guidelines, and can vary from one to three years (in Andalusia, however, it is compulsory to revaccinate against rabies every year). If your animal has the revaccination done within the time span, you don't need to wait the initial 30 days before travelling. For the UK, rules are a bit more complicated. As stated above, your animal will need a European passport, a microchip and a rabies vaccination. However, after the animal's rabies vaccination, blood should be taken and sent off to evaluate if

24

The Grapevine

your pet has sufficient rabies antibodies. You have to wait 30 days from the day of the vaccination until the sample can be taken, however, if your animal is up to date with its boosters, you can simply have the sample taken straight away. Counting from the day the blood is withdrawn, you have to wait six months before you can travel, there is no way whatsoever this time span can be shorter, no matter how quickly you get the result back (which can vary from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the laboratory). Rarely, the laboratory comes back with the result that your pet has insufficient antibodies. In that case, the animal needs to be revaccinated, wait 30 days, retest and start all over again. Once the result comes back, the vet will stamp in the passport that the test has been successfully completed, and, if you keep your boosters updated, you do not need to repeat this lengthy process and your pet is free to travel whenever you want. Once you have decided when you are going to travel, you need to make an appointment with the vet. Not less than 24 and not more than 48 hours before embarkation for England, the pet should be treated against Echinococcus multilocularis and ticks, date and time of such administration has to been signed and stamped in the passport. hen my family and I first arrived in Spain we wondered how we would fit in working as there seemed to be so much paperwork to sort out, fill in or wait somewhere! There were NIE numbers, residencies, car papers and insurance, house insurance, house bills, IBI and title deed (escritura) problems, health cards that all needed to be sorted. Everything also seemed so much harder in a different language especially in the beginning. We had used Asesoria Aljarife via an Estate Agent when buying our house here 6 years again. In fact after the house buying process we didn't stop going into their offices in Calle San st Antonio number 8, 1 floor in Cómpeta. Our contact was Anne who helped us through most of the paper work we needed to sort in our first years here. In fact my husband and I would walk in and our phrase would be “could you just help us with....” or “just one other question Anne!” Asesoria Aljarife was set up over 20 years again by José Manuel López Navas. Jose Manuel was born in Cómpeta and studied Business accounts and business administration in Malaga to become economist and administration manager. Jose Manuel enjoyed travelling in his student years and visited countries like France, Italy, Switzerland and England. Upon leaving university he spent a year in the accounts department at El Corte Ingles and then came back to work in Cómpeta for the Estate Agents Country Properties. Whilst he was working in Country Properties he also decided to set up his own accounts and administration business in Cómpeta. He opened offices in Calle Peligros and employed a lady who today still, after 23 years, works for him now albeit in a different location. In the beginning she dealt with social security and wage slips questions for local businesses with Jose Manuel working on the Fiscal and accounts side of the business. For around 8 years Jose Manuel worked from within Country Properties whilst building up his own business sometimes spending 8 hours in the Estate Agents and then onto his own office for another 2 to 3 hours. For the last 5 years or so Jose Manuel has worked out of his own offices and Country Properties is now a client of his. The business grew successfully for Jose Manuel and he is now in his third premises with 6 other staff working for him in Competa. He also opened another office in Torre del Mar approximately 10 years ago, Gestoria López Navas, with 4 more people employed and thus can provide further services and works well alongside the Asesoria in Cómpeta.

Jose Manuel was born and works in Cómpeta but bought a house first in Rincon de la Victoria where he lives with his wife and two boys. However, he has also invested in property around the village over the years. I asked Jose Manuel about the changes he has seen in Cómpeta. He remarked the first foreigners were mostly Danish and integrated themselves well in the village life. Then over the years the amount of other nationalities increased so that the dynamics of the number of new businesses that Aljarife have helped set up has also changed, now more than 40% of his business clients are foreigners. Finally Jose commented on the obvious change and that is the stricter guidelines and paperwork issues with regard to house sales. In fact he couldn't stress enough how important it is to get your paperwork checked and any amendment in your house documentation sorted. He is more than happy for you to come in and talk to his staff, in either of his offices, in Cómpeta or in Torre del Mar, and they will check your paperwork and advise you on any steps that you need to take. re you tired of the same old TV programmes ? Are you fed up of missing all the sporting action ?Would you like new movies to watch each and every week ? Skynettv are pleased to offer the full Sky UK package PLUS MORE for only 25€ per month. That's all the sports channels including Sky sports 1-4, ESPN, Setanta Sports (yes it still exists), Eurosports and also premiership club channels Man Utd, Liverpool & Chelsea. Our offer includes the whole package with all the movies, documentaries, music, children's and news channels to name a few. How does it work ? To use our service we install a new receiver (sky boxes do not work with our service) and connect it to your existing satellite dish presuming you have one. If not, we can install the satellite dish for you. We also connect the receiver to your internet set-up. The speed of your internet is not important as our system uses very little bandwidth. Our system differs to that of internet streaming because it is connected to both the satellite dish and internet and receives its main signal from the actual satellite dish meaning you can watch LIVE TV without freezing. Because our receiver is connected to your satellite and home network, you are able to watch all the channels on your TV or your PC. If you are viewing your channels on your TV, your computer does not need to be even switched on. I don't have internet, can I still use your service? Unfortunately no, you need internet access. Without an internet connection our receivers will only provide free to air channels. If you do not have internet at present but are interested we are happy to recommend reliable internet providers in your area. Does it include HD channels ? Yes all HD channels are included in the 25€ per month package. Can I record on your receivers ? We have 3 receivers available, a standard receiver, a HD receiver and a HD recordable

Our installations start from 140€. How long must I commit to ? We like to keep things simple for everyone and that's why we don't ask for any contracts to be signed. Our customers are free to terminate there subscription at any time. Like many of our customers you may not spend the whole 12 months here, if you are away for more than a month then let us know and we will put your subscription on hold. My internet is in a different room to my TV, is this a problem ? Not at all. We have 3 different methods for connecting the receiver to your internet. We would always advise you on the best option for your home. I live in the Campo, will my internet be ok ? Yes, we have many clients in the Campo using different internet providers. What else is included ? We can also install additional satellites and connect them to a single receiver which will give you extra sports channels. One of our European satellites provides Tring sports that gives you 6 Premiership matches on the 3pm Saturday kick off's. Valentines Day

W

illiam Shakespeare has described love in the most beautiful manner by saying "As sweet and musical as bright Apollo's lute, strung with his hair; and when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods, makes heaven drowsy with the harmony." Love is the name of giving and not snatching. The essence of love and romance lies in lifelong commitment to your loved one that you'll always stand by their side. Erich Fromm says that 'love means to commit oneself without guarantee, to give oneself completely in the hope that our love will produce love in the loved person. Love is an act of faith, and whoever is of little faith is also of little love.' Here are some romantic valentines ideas that will help you find answer to questions like what to do on Valentine's Day If you want to make your valentine feel special then a great idea for you is to place a small love note with three magical words written on it 'I Love You' and place it besides her bed and see

the miraculous effects. 1. Take a day's leave from office and plan the day with your loved one. 2. Prepare some nice valentines cookie recipe in the shape of heart and I'm sure your partner will love it. 3. Romantic long drive and a candle light dinner is a fabulous idea. 4. Do not forget to present her a bouquet of red roses because to express love what better way than flowers. 5. Instead of buying a card, this valentine's day do something different. Prepare a nice colourful card and do not forget to write love quotes. 6. This is the day when words are not enough. Some action is also required to make the day different. Hold each other's hands and go for a short walk. If nothing else remember to buy your loved one a card........ and perhaps you could even stretch to booking dinner for two

February Fun

I

n many of the hill villages of Málaga carnival is kids' stuff. Schools have children of every age in bizarre, imaginative and hilarious costumes, bought and home-made, parading through the streets of the town before a mid-day party. As per Halloween, more enterprising youngsters dress up and knock at doors chanting “Car-na-val, car-na-val, eso es car-na-val!” to procure treats. It's all fun but hardly touches the riotous image the word carnival conjures up: eso no es carnaval. But elsewhere in Spain carnival has become a modern combination of classic Spanish revelry, daring and defiance combined with breathtaking art. Carnival is the traditional period of feasting and partying before Lent. With no rich food, such as meat, dairy goods or sugar, allowed in the six weeks of Lent preceding Easter, it all had to be eaten up before then! Our own Shrove Tuesday comes from this tradition – and indeed the “Martes de Carnaval”, its last day, is probably the most important. In some places it's marked by the “Entiero de la Sardina”: the Sardine's funeral, in which a cardboard sardine is paraded through the streets then ceremoniously burnt or buried! The most famous Spanish celebrations are probably those in Tenerife, Sitges, Tarragona, Badajoz and Cadiz. All have their own distinct traditions and styles. Take Sitges, for an example of a very modern Carnival. This Catalonian town was a fishing village and is now a chic resort, but every February it is taken over by a gay parade – literally and metaphorically – with 250,000 revellers (gay and straight) pouring into town.

The Grapevine

38

There is a wonderfully camp cavalcade, starting on 'Jueves Lardero' (Fat Thursday) with a feast of local food and peaking on the Sunday with local carnival clans parading through the streets in carriages and kitsch costumes – many fantastically beautiful works of art! Instead of the fishy funeral, Tuesday sees the drag queens stepping out in a hilarious display: visitors come from all over Europe to join in the fun. Here in Andalucía, Cadiz holds the biggest and best known celebrations. It may not have the costume queens of Sitges – but it certainly has style, with the emphasis on satire instead of special effects. This is an old traditional – carnival being the one time the populace could mock the Catholic Church. And indeed, mockery of authority and a ribald take on current events is the theme; when bird flu was in the news chicken costumes were common, but this year Spain's football team may be up for grabs. Local carnival groups are divided into chirigotas, choirs and comparsas. The chirigotas are groups of satirical singers; they compete create the best routines with the most biting lyrics - in carnival nothing is sacred, not even the King – and there's actually a prize. There's a lot of competition, though - 300 chirigotas at last count! The choirs are more music focused: they go through the streets in open carts, alternating comic and serious songs backed by a mini orchestra of guitars and lutes. And the comparsas have their own musical style, with the wittiest – and most critical – lyrics expressed in poetical style. They are less farcical but sharper than the chirigotas, and perhaps a little less mad (but not much). On parade nights, politicians, sports stars and belly dancers rub shoulders as they dance through the yellow-trimmed houses of Cadiz. No wonder Franco banned Carnival, hating the idea of the freedom of masquerade, loathing the irreverence it celebrated. What better recommendation can there be to take part in this revived tradition of February fun? Rose Jones

as less disposable materials have to be used in wrapping the furniture.

dvance Moves was established in 2002 by Mat Ford – Dunn after he had relocated himself from the UK to Spain the year before. It was a time when many people were leaving the UK to start new lives in Spain and the housing market in both countries was buoyant. Mat had originally worked in the UK as an area manager for Bishops Move and with his wealth of experience behind him he saw an opportunity to establish a removal company in Spain that specialised in relocations between the two countries. Mats idea was simple, to provide high levels of service at competitive prices. 'The first thing I noticed about the majority of our competitors is that they did not have a depot in each country, this meant that they lacked the flexibility and support that clients often need when relocating between two countries.' Says Mat, who's main warehouse is situated in Murcia with two additional warehouses situated in the UK.

Whist Advance Moves has grown in size since its conception in 2002, it is still a family run business with a very dedicated and hard working team of staff. Mat was especially pleased when the activities of Advance Moves came to the attention of the British Association of Removers ( B.A.R. ) who asked him to join the B.A.R as an international associate. ' It basically means that we have the facilities and levels of customer care that allow us to operate as a B.A.R member, a very high accolade indeed.' enthused Mat. Advance Moves continues to operate a weekly service from the UK to Spain and has now expanded it range of services to include smaller volumes, such as individual items of furniture, or just a few boxes. Very useful for internet shopping! Local removals within Spain and storage are also catered for.

All three warehouse's have state of the art containerised storage to keep clients furniture clean and well protected. Mats policy has always been to re-invest into the company so that all aspects of the business are continually updated and improved to ensure that Advance Moves stays one step ahead of its competitors. One aspect of this is that all international removals include an export wrap of the furniture to provide ultimate protection whilst goods are being transported. 2011 also sees a massive investment in purpose made furniture covers that are re-usable. These covers provide increased protection and also cut down on the carbon footprint of Advance Moves,

Looking to the future Mat believes that, given time, the current imbalance in the housing markets will be resolved and things will get moving again. At the moment more and more expats are returning to the UK for economic reasons and the help and assistance that Advance Moves offers during these relocations seems to be really appreciated by their clients. The overall trend is still the continued increase of UK residents moving to Spain for the good weather and healthier lifestyle, and due to the continued increase in demand for Advance Moves services, Mat and his Team look to be gearing up for another busy year!

Juicy Plantings Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

W

e've just taken delivery of bare-rooted fruit trees – that is deciduous fruit trees that are not potted but come rooted just ready for planting. Because they're not potted and stored until root-balled, these trees are very much cheaper. The 'window of planting' is limited; basically, the sooner the better. Whilst cooler days are upon us and the trees are dormant, they will settle in quickly and reawaken with warmer springtime conditions, bursting into blossom and leaf. These trees are ideal if you are wanting to plant an orchard without spending a fortune, for they are less than half the cost of their potted counterparts. They were very popular last year so, this year, we've got more in, so let me tell you a bit about them. Almond, prunus dulcis, syn. prunus amygdalus. We are all accustomed to seeing the beautiful almond blossom powdering our hillsides in winter but there are some facts you may not know. Their initial roots are few but well spread and, in subsequent years, fine roots develop to feed the tree. They are not self-fertile but are cross-pollinated by bees. If the winter is very wet, this impedes the flight of the bees. They prefer temperatures above 15C and they will not

fly if it is windy – above 24 km/h. Marcona, a sweet and rounded nut, is the most popular; it is very productive, forming a medium-sized tree and early to mid-season. Although, in our area, it is always grown 'dry', in some more recent commercial plantations, where water is not a problem, irrigation is installed and production has been shown to rise. Apple, pyrus malus. It's accepted that apples aren't an ideal fruit for here as, in general, they require an elevated number of chilling hours but we've managed to obtain a variety called Anna. It is a very early season Golden Delicious type apple, though more attractive looking, which is noted for its very low chill requirement, some 300 hrs. sufficing. The fruits will ripen in late June and it will also bear fruit early on in its life. A good apple tree will last over 50 years – think how many apples that will be! Apricot, prunus armeniaca. These beautiful stately trees, up to 10m tall, are usually selffertile, so one will suffice. Once established, with their deep tap root and spreading fibrous roots, once established, they will become drought resistant. Water abundantly during their first

year in the ground, then slowly decrease until they are self-sufficient. Cherry, prunus avium. The cherry tree is a big, lovely beauty, fabulous in flower and you just have to stroke its striped and polished trunk! Reaching some 25m tall if left unpruned, it is one of the least demanding in terms of water, once established becoming very drought tolerant. We've a type called Picota, pico meaning beaked or pointed, which is reflected in the shape of the fruits. They mature longer than any other cherry and, thus, are wonderfully juicy and sweet with an intensely cherry flavour. The fruits always come away without the stalk. This type is also self-fertile, unlike most cherries. Nectarine, prunus persica, var. nectarine. The smooth-skinned peach! A smallish tree, around 4m tall, with a very extended root system spreading to, at least, twice that of the canopy. They dislike strong cold winds, so position carefully. We have in stock Caldesi 2000, a whitefleshed nectarine with lovely rich colouring which matures June/July. Nectarines, as peaches, do need irrigation, but do not overwater as the fruits fatten as this can cause skin splitting. Peach, prunus persica. Size and root system as the nectarine and with the same cultivation requirements. Irrigate to improve the quality and size of the fruits. We have Spring Lady, one of the best of the yellow fleshed peaches. Peach, donut type, prunus persica var. platycarpa. Known in Spanish as paraguayo, this is a peach mutation, slightly velvety with a flattened aspect. Their white flesh is deliciously juicy and exotic tasting with almond touches. Prolific producers, you'll get far more paraguayos than peaches per tree. Early flowering and prettily pink! Cultivation as peaches and nectarines. Pear, pyrus communis. A deep rooting tree, very drought tolerant, tall and handsome. 'Conference' is one of the best-known varieties, loved for its great flavour and size, and good keeping qualities. Plum, prunus domestica. Plums are large trees with very strong and pliable roots, excellent to

bind soil. We've chosen two varieties of Japanese type plums because they are better for warmer climates. 'Golden Japan' forms a large vigorous tree with large yellow fruits, juicy and delicious. Can be harvested in June. As a contrast, 'Angeleno' is a late cropper (end of September) and bears very large black fruits with light amber flesh and a good sweet flavour. Persimmon, diospyros kaki. This is the one that we know here as kaki. The small and very attractive tree with lovely autumn colouration, will become largely drought resistant, perhaps just needing an odd soaking in long hot summers. The large tomato look-alikes, hang on the bare branched tree at the turn of the year. 'Rojo Brillante' is one of the traditional astringent types which means that they need to be left to fully mature (until very soft) at which stage they are a luscious mouthful. All of these are priced at €6.50 each – a wonderful investment for very little outlay. The Heatwave Heads Home Jan Rowlands and her camper van travels (Part two)

Merlin's Maiden Voyage

T

he highlight of our sumemer this year was, without doubt, our eldest daughter's wedding. A truly magical day which my words cannot adequately describe. Shortly after this we traded in our old camper for a (very slightly) newer version, and magic must still have been in the air because, what with its quirky appearance and being in mystical Cornwall, it quickly became known as Merlin the Motorhome. We were really looking forward to our journey back, confident that we now had a fully functional camper. What we hadn't anticipated was the fuel strike in France, which began as soon as we had set foot in the country! We soon bcame used to the bits of paper stuck on the pumps informing us that there was no diesel. Fortunately we were able to keep in touch with friends both in the north and south of France, who kept us up to date with the situation. Even so, we had some hairy moments travelling along with the fuel gauge showing its cheery little red warning light! Although events caused us to alter our direction (nothing new there, then!) and aim for a more direct route, we still stayed in, and passed through, some lovely places and countryside. I hadn't realised before just how many canals there are in France, but it seems that every major river has a canal running alongside its course. Obviously, for commercial reasons at least, the French were also into direct routes when they built these. It was very pleasant pulling up at a canalside village at the end of the day, and enjoying an evening stroll, especially after sitting in a camper for several hours. At Gurgy, north of Auxerre, we were parked under a tree that was inhabited by several different species of birds including both green and spotted woodpeckers, and treecreepers. A real twitcher's treat! The Champagne area was particularly beautiful, with fields full of Charolais cattle and the occasional chateau appearing through the trees.

56

The Grapevine

Also, we passed many of the famous Champagne Houses - Moet et Chandon, Bollinger impressive buildings in accord with their status, no doubt. Then further south into the Ardeche, where the landscape becomes more mountainous and the roads snake up to remote villages. One of these was Aubignas, a medieval stone village in a stunning location - so still and quiet. Walking around we saw no-one, but there were glimpses of habitation everywhere. Looking into open doorways we spied a saw halfway through a piece of wood on a workbench, a basket of wet washing on a set of stairs, waiting to go on the line. Everywhere the impression that the place had just been abandoned. Mais attends! C'est midi - dejeuner! Everyone was at lunch! Later we saw a sign for the Gorges de l'Ardeche and decided to explore. Wow, what a spectacular place. The gorge goes on for miles and the river at the base is a mecca for watersports enthusiasts, with campsites all along the banks. Heading once again into the Camargue region, we stopped at Aigues-Mortes, to the west of Arles, to find the town "en fete". They were in the middle of one of their most important festivals, with live music, a fair and sports involving horses and bulls. Like an Archez feria, but multiplied by at least tenfold and all within the enclosed space of this totally walled ancient town. We very much enjoyed the fun, and were pleased with our parking area next to the canal and overlooking the town ramparts. During the night, however, there was a terrific thunder and lightning storm, and the rain was torrential. We awoke in the morning to find that we, and several other camper vans, appeared to be sitting in a lake, and that our new doormat had either floated away or was submerged beyond reach. No sign of it anywhere, so we left without it. My husband seemed particularly aggrieved by this and kept referring to it for the rest of the journey! I

appreciated just how attached to it he had become. Funny the things you learn about people even after more than thirty years! Now we were passing the etangs around Narbonne. These lagoons are like infinity pools and, on a sunny day, the light off them is so bright that it hurts your eyes. They are populated by all kinds of birdlife, but the most beautiful are the pink flamingos. Down towards the border we saw lots more exotic creatures sitting in the laybys at the side of the road, waiting for the lorry drivers and any other passing trade! Our final stop in France was at Port-Vendres, a smart port and marina. As it was the first really warm day of the trip we sat in the sunshine outside a bar for a drink, where I had a ridiculously expensive cognac - my last in France. At our first stop in Spain I celebrated by having a ridiculously cheap brandy - the first of many! On to Figueres and to the Salvador Dali Museum, the final piece of the "Dali Triangle" for us to visit. It's impossible to park a camper anywhere near the museum, which is housed in a converted theatre in the town, but we were able to find a space about a mile out and walk in. Well worth it. What a place - totally bizarre and surreal. The man was absolutely off his head, but such a creative genius. I felt very privileged to have seen so much of his work. Back down to earth from the whacky world of Dali, and to ring the changes on the way down, we left the coast at Vinaros and went inland to the medieval hilltop village of Morella. As with many such places it is dominated by a castle, and this one is well worth a look. It is a ruin, but it is an important tourist attraction. You can climb right up to the top, and the views from there are spectacular, and the many information boards help you to understand how it would have operated when it was inhabited. Next to the castle is a monastery which is being restored, and which has a rare surviving fresco from the middle ages of the "Danse Macabre", whereby people from every social rank joined hands in a circle and danced to see the departed off to the next life. The village also has a small exquisite public garden - "Jardi di Poete" - to commemorate a local poet who died recently.

time. Unlike Morella, which is totally geared up for tourists, Jalance retains its origins as a working village. Not an attractive place, but the facades of the houses are brightly painted and some streets have flowers painted on the roadway. We spent a very pleasant evening in a local bar, where the friendly barman was keen to use his few words of English. Nearly at journey's end, we decided to stick with what we know and so passed the final two days at Almerimar again. The weather was wonderful, and it was great to sit on the beach in the heat. The dog especially appreciated it, and swam to her heart's content for three hours before she decided that she had had enough. Well, back at last. Tim, the new sat-nav man, sounded altogether more mature and confident, probably due to his improved and sophisticated gadgetry. Merlin performed well, and between the two of them, and by using a combination of wizardry and trickery, managed to bring us back to Archez. Can't wait for the next Magical Mystery Tour! Jan Rowlands .

Further south to Jalance, another rural village set in superb countryside, but very different this

Give me a Break! by Andy Wilkes

I

n the world of commercial TV our lives are very structured; before December 25th we arrange Christmas and no other aspect of life can be considered. At around 12pm on the 25th this changes and then we can only consider booking a holiday or buying a sofa – is there a law that dictates that if you have a sofa company you have to call it a 3 letter acronym? DFS, CFS, SCS etc. Also you are not allowed to pay cash; rather all payments must be made over a minimum of 25 years and must be interest free. The stress of spending a family Christmas has taken its toll and suddenly a week in the sun seems like a great idea. So once you have spent 3 hours in the queue at Marks and Spencer's swapping the very special Christmas jumper given to you by a distant relative – you know the queue, full of unsmiling people, mainly woman taking back the black lacy lingerie bought for them by their ever-hopeful husbands waiting to swap it for a pair of fluffy slippers. So jumper/lingerie swapped it's time to book the holiday. This starts well; the brochure shows a golden beach, empty except for one person in a hammock with a sun hat over their face and a large cocktail next to them. Deep down we all know this is a pipe dream, but on we go and make the booking. After Christmas money is a bit tight so booking an 'allocation on arrival' holiday seems like a good idea. This gives the holiday company carte blanche to put you in any dump

with a bed, so ideally these should be avoided. I once went to Kavos in Corfu in this manner and as we pulled into our “resort” a drunken man lying in the road and clutching a bottle of beer opened one eye and shouted “welcome to Kavos”. I thought he was being friendly but later realised he was saying “Abandon hope all ye who enter here” luckily I was able to survive by sitting in bars and watching videos of Only Fools and Horses all week (which I could have done at home for a fraction of the cost). I know I have written about it before, but for me the real down side of travelling is the airport. One we use quite regularly is Luton. Here they have introduced nice little welcoming touches such as charging £1 to drop somebody off and offering you the chance to pay £3 to be fasttracked through security. This surely must explain why going through security before was so hellish, to make you think that spending £3 was a good investment. Mind you when the queue is 500 people long and your flight takes off in 35 minutes it probably is, but what a con. Once you are through security you often have to play the Toilet lottery game – this involves choosing an available cubicle wisely; any dithering or hovering by an open door could result in you being deemed weird or even worse mistaken for a cottager like my old next door neighbour. When I was little I remember my mum telling me to stay away from him as he had

Toadvertise advertisecall callHelen Helenon on637 637028 028873 873 To

been found “doing naughty things with another man in a public toilet”. The naughtiest thing my young mind could envisage was drawing a picture of a willy on the cubicle wall. Not a bad guess for a 7 year-old; at least I was in the right ball park. Now I come to think of it my next door neighbour is probably the fattest man I have ever seen so I wonder how he even got into the cubicle. Maybe he did not and that is why he got caught…..anyway, where were we? Oh yes, Toilet Lottery - a quick scan of the cubicle needs to be made; is the floor under 5 inches of wee? No, proceed. Does the pan look like it has just been used by the local rugby team after a night on the beer and curry (and in their somewhat delicate state they have also forgotten to flush)? No, proceed. So finally you are in with dry shoes and not a second of hovering or perceived sideways glances at your fellow toilet users at the urinals. You close the door (make sure there is a lock or you will be forced to use the toilet whilst whistling with your legs stretched out to keep the door closed. I have had to do this before and it is not easy) If your cubicle does have a lock you can relax for a moment before wiping the toilet seat down with some toilet paper. But wait! In your haste to get in you have not made the final and most crucial check; is there any toilet paper inside the industrial sized toilet roll holder? If the answer is no there are only a few options left. The options are: find some old receipts and/or leaflets in your pocket and use them – please note, credit card slips have no absorbent qualities, or calmly wash your hands then walk out and find another toilet (this of course is not always doable) or, if you dare, exit your cubicle and go into another one. And all of this stress is before you even begin the trek to the departure gate, the distance of which, of course is inversely proportionate to the amount of time you left before your flight takes off. I would like to think that in the future there will be transportation devices that cut out the need for flying and the hours of my life wasted in queues at airports. That said, I can just hear it now “Sorry sir, all transportations are cancelled today due to a volcanic cloud causing all users to end up in Siberia” I would ponder the options; Siberia or Luton airport? “Right, I have a cardigan packed. Get me to Siberia!” It can't be worse than Luton can it?

Deal or no Deal?

C

hristmas and all that goes with it is now a distant memory. As we enter February, and for those with children, the Christmas or Three Kings' presents have probably been discarded into a dark corner of a bedroom. Possibly even that X-Box, Playstation or Wii has lost its attraction, despite the array of games that can be played on them. I for one had one of my first experiences of these realistic games playing on a friend's kids' Wii game. For a few minutes I was an “axe” player on Guitar Hero, then canoeing a slalom course with a fantastic backdrop of mountains and avoiding a raft of ducks and finally smashing some computer opponent over the head with a pugel stick to knock him off a platform into water below. Nice! It was all very well but the time it takes to work out how to set up and play the game, then getting frustrated like hell perfecting the winning technique, I'm not sure it is something I could play that often . It was just prior to New Year's Eve, which we

were to spend with friends at one of their houses, that I had agreed to learn some card tricks by way of entertainment, that the thought started to cross my mind. Playing cards – what a simple but versatile way of passing the time playing solitary games, competitive games, winning money, or as I did, bamboozle our friends with clever tricks. Well, OK, the last bit isn't totally true in my case but it can be done with more practice. There's so much you can do with a deck of cards it knocks spots of your high-tech alternative and all for a fraction of the price. (I'm getting old. 'dissing' high- tech games and talking about how much things cost!) But it's true, I say. There are somewhere between 1,000 and 10,000 different games you can play with a deck of cards – or maybe two decks for games such as Bridge or Newmarket – if you include the different variations of similar games. Yeh, eat dirt, X-Box! See, I may be getting older but I can still speak the lingo, innit!

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

So where does this simple yet versatile pastime derive from? Early playing cards can be traced to China in th the 9 century and were thought to have found their way to Europe in 1275 and England th around the middle of the 13 century. As is the case now a deck consisted of 52 cards and comprised four suits – polo sticks, coins, swords and cups – but once the French got hold of them the suits became those we are familiar with today being diamonds (coins), hearts (cups), spades (swords) and clubs (polo sticks). Each of the picture cards – Jack, Queen and King – actually represent real historical figures. In the case of the Kings, the King of Hearts represents Charlemagne, King of the Franks in 768, King of Diamonds being Julius Caeser, King of Clubs Alexander the Great and King of Spades King David from the Bible. You see, you don't get that much history from an X-Box or Wii, do you? Whilst I am referring to a standard deck of what are now known as Anglo-American cards, as most of us reading this are resident in Spain, I should give a brief mention to the Spanish equivalent known as baraja. A deck of baraja cards consists of 40 cards numbered 1-7 and 1012 with numbers 10-12 representing Jack, Queen and King. Sometimes the 8 and 9 numbered cards are added to the deck to give a 48 deck of cards. So there we are. Back to the Anglo-American deck of cards I can tell you are now starting to feel the love for. Admit it, that Wii is staying in its box and you're getting tempted by my card alternative. Well let's play one of the trump cards and look at the vast array of different types of games you can play. Trick-taking games involve winning cards or “tricks” by placing a card from your hand and, depending on what an opponent has played, you either win or lose the “trick”. Bridge and Whist are popular examples.

If you have no mates, or they're all playing Grand Theft Auto IV on Playstation, there are even solitaire games you can play on your own such as the popular Klondike, Pyramid, Clock Patience or Canfield. The simple choice is shooting some bad ass car thief and running him over before speeding off down some narrow alley or getting all your Aces out and completing Klondike – no contest! As well as the above we have shedding games, accumulating games, fishing games, comparing games, drinking card games and then you can get on your poker face and play an array of poker games. Phew! If card games are not your thing you could always amaze your friends, as I attempted to do as referred to earlier (yes, I did say “attempted”!), with some clever card tricks. Many card tricks require no sleight of hand or clever hand actions to conceal a card but work simply by noting a particular card or cards and their position in the pack or by mathematical probability. With a bit of practice on your patter and technique you could be well on your way to becoming the next Paul Daniels. Well, OK, David Blaine then. Even if you mess up you can always remind your audience that Tommy Cooper was never any good at magic but he did alright out of it. All you need is a stupid laugh, a fez and job done. So there you have it, for barely €2 you have a versatile pack of veritable fun, which you can enjoy alone (sad!), with friends (nice) or enemies (take their money)! Put that Wii down and deal me a hand! PS – if you want a pack or two they're for sale in your favourite newsagents – that's Todo Papel if you need reminding – for only €1.50; bargain! Well, if I'm writing an article I may as well get a plug in. Alick Howard

Matching games require you to accumulate cards by matching required groups of cards before your opponent. Games such as Rummy and childrens' games such as Go Fish and Old Maid are examples of matching games.

"I'm Marathon - the one with the nuts," he replied. He touched her Cream Eggs, then slipped his hand into her Snickers, he fondled her Flapjacks, and she rubbed his Tic Tacs. Home needed

for these two beautiful young adult cats

“Hand crafted jewellery”

We are relocating and sadly need to find a home for our beloved cats. They are looking for a campo home with someone who is prepared to spend the time needed to settle them into a new environment – preferably one without other animals or small children. Both cats have been neutered, are clean, incredibly affectionate and gentle and spend a lot of time in each other's company. We will miss them very much but will be happy if we can find them a new and loving home. Visit Divas Boutique and Emporium to see the full range of Precious jewellery available or commission your own piece at no extra cost!

At Divas Boutique & Emporium, Puente Don Manuel (next to Morenos Bar), Alcaucin. Tel: 618 928 852

“Sex on the beach” Sex by the fireplace

Sex on the Beach is a cocktail that has many variations. The most famous type is made from vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice. This is an International Bartenders Association Official Cocktail. Because cranberry juice is hard to find in Cómpeta, Enmanuel uses a little bit of grenadine. Let's think of nice evenings by the fireplace, and call it “sex by the fireplace”...

Take one large squared glass of 33cl Fill the glass with 3 big ice cubes.

Add 50 ml. of vodka. Add 50 ml. of Peach liquor (licor de melocoton). Add 15 ml. of Grenadine.

Fill up the glass with orange juice

Step 4: Decorate the glass with a large straw and a slice of orange

THE ROYAL NAVY

THE AUSSIE’S

The Royal Navy found they had too many officers and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for Retirement a bonus of £1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two points in his body. The officer got to choose what those two points would be.

Billy was at school this morning in the Aussie Outback and the teacher asked all the children what there fathers did for a living.

The first officer who accepted asked that he be measured from the top of his head to the tip of his toes... He was measured at six feet and walked out with a bonus of £72,000... The second officer who accepted was a little smarter and asked to be measured from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. He walked Out with £96,000. The third one was a non-commissioned officer, a grizzly old Chief Stoker who, when asked where he would like to be measured replied, 'From the tip of my penis to my testicles.' It was suggested by the pension man that he might want to reconsider, explaining about the nice big cheques the previous two Officers had received. But the old Chief insisted and they decided to go along with him providing the measure was taken by a Medical Officer. The Medical Officer arrived and instructed the Chief to drop 'em,' which he did. The Medical Officer placed the tape measure on the tip of the Chief's penis and began to work back. Dear Lord!' he suddenly exclaimed, 'Where are your testicles?'

All the typical answers came out, Fireman, Policeman, Salesman, Chippy, Captain of Industry etc, but Billy was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father. "My father is an exotic dancer in a gay club and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes if the offer is really good, he'll go out with a man, rent a cheap hotel room and let them sleep with him." The teacher quickly sets the other children some work and took little Billy aside to ask him if that was really true. "No" said Billy, "He plays cricket for Australia but I was just too embarrassed to say."

THE LEATHER DRESS Do you know why? When a woman wears a leather dress, A man's heart beats quicker, And his throat gets dry, He goes weak in the knees, And he begins to think irrationally. Ever wonder why? It's because she smells like a new car

The Old Chief calmly replied, ' The Falkland Islands'.

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA

CAMPO Cómpeta Amateur Performance Group wish to extend a very big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Dance Gala weekend in December. Despite the challenging UK weather and an air traffic controllers strike in Spain, the team managed to present a truly unique event which we can now announce raised an amazing 3,313.65€. A cheque for 2,000€ will shortly be handed over to the Director of the Instituto (Junior School) to go towards an educational visit for the students. The remainder has already been donated to Reach4Dance. Thanks again. The CAMPO Team

CAS IN CASH CRISIS As we enter our 25th year we as many other animal charities find ourselves under severe

financial pressure due to the general economic climate and the downturn in funds. Over the last 5 years we have spent over 125000 Euros on Veterinary fees in treating the animals we have had in our care and over 220000 Euros in Kennel fees. We receive no government grants and no one within Cas is paid, all volunteer their time and expertise. All the money is raised through fundraising events and donations. In 2010 Cas found itself with increasing debt and as a result we have had to sell our Office/Shop and take a lease back on the premises. This action has cleared the majority of our debt but this means we regrettably will have to reduce the number of animals we take into our care, other than those we are able to place with fosterers and reduce our kennel fees. We will also have to limit the number we treat at the vets except in emergencies. We can no longer automatically pay for vaccinations and spaying and will be asking for substantial donations towards these costs. We hope this action will be for a limited period and that the financial situation will improve during 2011. Our website www.casnerja.org contains details of over 200 dogs and cats awaiting homes and we are continuing to re-home between 40/50 animals each month. Unfortunately the numbers being abandoned does not reduce. Our fundraisers are working as hard as ever in an

effort to raise money as can be seen from our published events and we are expanding our presence at the local markets in an endeavour to increase our income. We do however need help from the general public either by way of helping with the fundraising or by making donations large or small. Every cent helps. If you can help in any way please contact our President Wendy Thorne or Treasurer Richard Thorne on 952037095 or make a donation at our office or direct to our bank account as follows to help us get through these difficult times. Panto Time Its Panto time again ... oh yes it is! CAMPO Cómpeta Amateur Performance Group understand that another summer Panto is being demanded so who are we to disappoint our loyal audience. In truth we didn't need many excuses to break open the props cupboard and unpack the costumes and make-up so here we are again, throwing out an invitation to anyone wanting to take part whether it be front or back stage. Much laughter and hilarity will be had along the way combined with some hard work so do think about the commitment beforehand. We are holding an Open Meeting at the Hotel Balcon on Friday, March 11th starting at 8pm. So to all those budding Thespians, technicians, props and costume makers, prompters and the very

important drinks runner, if you are interested in hearing about our plans for this summer and finding out about how you can take part, then please come along and meet the Team or you can email me debi.bond@gmail.com for further information.
