Solutions 4 U specializes in all the legal aspects that surround property purchase and sale.
Buy With Confidence From experience we can say that many properties that are for sale have some irregularities in their paperwork, however it is our speciality to eradicate them. Whether you are selling or buying you want to do so with a sense of complete confidence. Working with an impartial Lawyer we are therefore currently updating the Title documents to a good amount of properties, so that when you buy with us you know that the property is registered correctly. We can also advise on Planning Issues which can save endless difficulties later on.
Have Peace of Mind For those who already own a property and may have concerns, we offer a FREE consultation whereby you can bring along a copy of your Title Deed and IBI (Rates) certificate and we will establish whether all your property is registered correctly. If inconsistencies are found we will explain fully what needs to be done, give you a time scale and a written estimate of the cost. Once completed you’ll see where the corrections have been made, thereafter happy that all your property is fully registered.
Solutions 4 U – easy parking right outside the office On the Torrox/Sayalonga Rd junction, ½ kilometer before Cómpeta
Editors Note..... Congratulations to Jocelyn our first winner of our new monthly competition “Find the Wine Glass”. For all those that E-mailed and were unlucky, give it another go this month, same competition but different prize, see page 64 for details. We received hundreds of entries from far and wide, it's really great to know how far out our magazine is read, with entries from Granada and Marbella. This month we have dedicated over ten pages to Valentine's Day. We have some great ideas on how to treat your other half on the 14th February. Most of the ideas won't cost the earth whether you decide to stay in and cook, go out for a meal or buy a present. Turn to page 52 and start reading and then circle what you would like to do and leave it open for your other half to take notice! (I think this is what I might do!). After a year of not returning to the UK my family and I will be taking a two day break back to the UK to get a quick dose of central heating and Tesco's and have the kids taken off our hands whilst we are out with friends. I am really looking forward to this little break and hope to return refreshed for the month ahead.

News in Spain MAN ARRESTED FOR FIVE MÁLAGA BANK ROBBERIES A man who robbed five bank branches in the province of Málaga has been arrested by agents of the National Police and Guardia Civil. The 35 year old from Málaga, named with the initials F.J.L.B. acted alone and obtained an estimated 36,000 € from the banks in Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria. His first robbery was in June 2010 and then a year later he robbed the same branch again. He would walk into branches with nothing over his face, and then he would don a disguise and intimidate cashiers and clients with a pistol. It’s thought he used a false tattoo to mislead the police, and one case he fled on a moped which had seen its registration changed beforehand. After considerable police work he was arrested at his home in Manilva at the end of December. BRITISH DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER SEVILLA HIT AND RUN A 23 year old Briton has been arrested in Campillos, Málaga, by the Guardia Civil in connection with a hit and run accident at a petrol station in Gillena Sevilla. A petrol station worker was injured and had to be admitted to the Virgen del Rocio Hospital, and the driver failed to stop. The Briton lives in Campillos and has been named with the initials W.A.F., and has been taken to Sevilla to attend the court which has charge of the case. By chance a member of the public had seen a TV report on the wanted driver and recognised him coincidentally at a petrol station in Campillos Bad diesel affects 137 Málaga drivers Some Málaga drivers have faced costly car repairs after filling their cars with Diesel from the Carrefour Los Patios shopping centre in the city. All those affected filled up on December 5, and there are now 137 cases. After filling their tanks with Gasóleo A, their vehicles started to fail. One victim, Joseé Antonio Roble

said that the a new Peugeot and Citroen stopped on the motorway shortly after filling up, and his Renault Megane will no longer start. There was a special offer on the diesel that day of an 8% discount but now many face costs of as much as 2,000 € in the workshop. Carrefour says that they cannot accept any responsibility until there has been a full investigation. A statement said they have 96 petrol stations across the country and only this one in Málaga saw a problem on December 5. 1.5 TONS OF CANNABIS SEIZED ON A BEACH IN TORROX A National Police operation in Málaga province has seized more than 1.5 tons of cannabis on a beach in Torrox and confiscated a further 250 kilos of the drug from property which the gang used as a store in Cártama. Twenty one people have been arrested. Police sources informed Diario Sur that 13 gang members were caught in the act after they were seen bringing their cargo by boat to a beach near the Torrox lighthouse and unloading it into a waiting van. Another three people were taken into custody as they were returning to Málaga from Torrox and a fourth during the search in Cártama. The remaining four were arrested some days later during the course of the investigation. It’s understood that the majority of the suspects are Spanish. IF YOU SMOKE IN MÁLAGA, DO IT QUIETLY Málaga City Hall has started a new campaign to reduce the noise pollution which is caused by people who gather outside bars to smoke on the city’s streets and terraces. Entitled, ‘If you smoke, do it quietly’, it aims to raise awareness amongst smokers of the problems they can cause to others who may be trying to sleep.

Weird and Wonderful from around the world!
S First Lady Michelle Obama has started a Twitter account as part of her husband's re-election campaign, but was not the first one to post on it. Mrs Obama's account, @michelleobama, will be managed by aides on the Obama campaign, with any tweets from the first lady herself to be signed "-mo." Within a few hours, the first lady was closing in on 100,000 followers. The president's account, @barackobama, is also managed by campaign officials, separate from the @whitehouse account. Mrs Obama's arrival on the social media site sees her following in the footsteps of hundreds of politicians, candidates and campaign staff ahead of November's election. She was given a boost when her husband's account - but not her husband himself - told the president's 11 million followers that the first lady had joined Twitter. "It's not every day we get to welcome the First Lady of the United States to Twitter - happy to have you, @MichelleObama!" Mrs Obama's first personal tweet included thanks for the "warm welcome". "Look forward to staying in touch with you here.

Brought up on a farm he had a little shearing experience, but that all changed when he travelled to the other side of the world. "I used to do a bit of shearing in the summer, then I came out to New Zealand when I was 20 for three months and it turned into 10 years," he said. Now based near Taupo on New Zealand's north island, Ivan broke the record in front of 100

$10m (ÂŁ6.5m) prize is on offer to whoever can create a Star Trek-like medical "tricorder". The Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize has challenged researchers to build a tool capable of capturing "key health metrics and diagnosing a set of 15 diseases". It needs to be light enough for would-be Dr McCoys to carry - a maximum weight of 5lb (2.2kg). The prize was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to the official Star Trek technical manual, a tricorder is a portable "sensing, computing and data communications device". The kit captured the imagination of the show's millions of viewers when it was first used in the cult series' first broadcast in 1966. In the show, which was set in the 23rd Century, the crew's doctor was able to use the tricorder to diagnose an illness simply by scanning a person's body. The award organisers hope the huge prize may inspire a present-day engineer to figure out the sci-fi gadget's secret, and "make 23rd Century science fiction a 21st Century medical reality".

ivic authorities in India's Bihar state have dumped heaps of stinking garbage outside a shopping complex to penalise its owner for evading taxes. Three truckloads of rubbish were emptied outside the centre in the state capital Patna's Kankerbagh locality. Officials said they were forced to take the extreme step as the complex owner had not paid taxes for 12 years. After a public outcry, the civic authority removed the garbage from the area where it had been deposited.

Andalucía Day and Semana Santa
T
he Day of Andalucía (Día de Andalucía), also known as Andalucía Day, marks the anniversary of a referendum held on February 28, 1980. A large majority of voters supported this referendum for Andalucía to become an autonomous community in Spain. Andalucía shares international land borders with Portugal and Gibraltar. Within Spain, it borders the autonomous communities of Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura and Murcia. Although people in Andalucia voted for the region to become an autonomous community of Spain on 28th Feb 1980 the Spanish Parliament only accepted Andalucia as an historic nationality in 2006. Andalucía's flag is widely displayed on the Day of Andalucía. It consists of three equal horizontal bars. The top and lower bars are dark green and the middle bar is white. Andalucía's coat of arms is at the center of the flag. Andalucía's coat of arms consists of an image of the mythical Greek hero Heracles between two columns. The columns represent the Pillars of Heracles. These are the rocks on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar.

The Friday before is often a day of celebration in schools with a traditional Andalusian breakfast (desayuno andaluz), consisting of a slice of toast with a thin layer of olive oil and orange juice; students color pictures that refer to the symbols and insignia of Andalusia, its history and customs, put on plays and sing the regional anthem, the Himno de Andalu Many people spend the day quietly with family or close friends. However, some people organize or attend private parties with traditional music, dancing, food and drink. Some municipalities hold communal meals with traditional foods, drinks and entertainment. Local politicians may present people with certificates or medals for service to the community. Semana Blanca is an extra week of holidays enjoyed only in the province of Andalucía to compensate for the fact that their main feria month is August, which is a non academic month. In other words, the region of Andalucía does not want to be short changed with their holidays. Semana Blanca always coincides with the Dia de Andalucía.

Carnival
S
pain is a country with a well known Catholic tradition. The carnival is, therefore, celebrated before the 40 days of Lent as a way to let loose before the prohibitions of the upcoming religious holidays. Most Andalucian towns stage some kind of parade, and there is usually a dance and a "Carnival Queen" contest. The Carnival centres around Shrove Tuesday, which takes place this year on 2012 February 16th. Most towns celebrate the carnival with processions either the weekend before or after these dates. Cities and larger towns have festivities lasting all week or longer. The carnival is a "fiesta of the people". It is a reaction against abstentions and prohibitions of all types. Just submerging yourself in the carnival celebrations is enough to make you feel the dramatic break with social order that carnival goers achieve. It is also an opportunity to let go of all inhibitions and to help out in this department, everyone is encouraged to wear masks and fancy dress. Hardly surprisingly, during the Spanish Civil War, General Franco abolished the Carnival in rebel areas. And after the war, of course, there was still much opposition to the Carnival, so Franco abolished it once again from 1937. However, in true Spanish style, the celebrations continued in Cadiz and some other towns namely: ·Ayamonte ·Isla Cristina ·Fuentes de Andalucia ·Trabujena ·Benamahoma
Cádiz is home to mainland Spain's premier carnival. In fact, numerous groups and associations throughout the city - along with the city hall - spend the entire year preparing for the next carnival. Such dedication does, therefore, deserve more than just a weekend of festivities, which is why this most ancient of European cities keeps the celebration going for at least a good 10 days. Music is possibly the most outstanding feature at this particular marathon event with locals working hard throughout the year to develop their acts and perfect their performances. Many will be competing at the city's Gran Teatro Falla. The main types of performances in Cádiz each year are : Chirigotas - These are humorous groups that perform satirical pieces about everything from politics to current events. Choirs - These groups of singers may be funny at times, serious at others. They tend to be out and about, entertaining people in the streets accompanied by stringed instruments. Comparsas - These are the most serious singers at the festival. They are known for their more classic musical talents and the more serious content of their songs. Quartets - They don't have to stick to the traditional four - but then, this is the carnival, after all. Time to break the rules! And they are most often accompanied by none other than a kazoo and the beating of sticks. Romanceros - These are the solo acts at that roam the streets to entertain visitors and locals alike. The Tree of Peace The Olive part 1 Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
T
he beauty of an ancient olive is majestic, its typically gnarled and twisted trunk stooping and wrinkling with natural aging much as we do! The ancestry of the cultivated olive is unknown though it is believed to have come from N. Africa and was probably introduced into the countries of the Mediterranean basin by the Phoenicians. Fossilised leaves have been found on the volcanic island of Santorini which date back to 37,000 B.C. and even fossilised larvae of the olive fly showing that they had the same problems with insect infestation even then. Some things never change! Tough, hardy, drought, fire and disease resistant, they can live to a great old age. Most Mediterranean countries lay claims to having the oldest living olive tree and some have been scientifically verified at over 2000 years old; one

tree in Greece is claimed to be 5000 years old with a 12m trunk perimeter! Some 750 million olive trees are grown worldwide and the Mediterranean region produces 99% of the world’s olive oil, with Spain being the largest producer. The Moors, of course, were responsible for the large-scale plantations of olives in Spain and particularly in Andalucia; from the word az-zait, meaning juice of the olive, we have the Spanish word, aceituno. Not only great cropping trees, olives are fabulous looking in gardens too. And if you’ve no patience to wait on their rather slow growth, these are one of the trees that can be transplanted at a great age. Thus you can order your ancient olive to be

craned into position and few trees can make such an instant impact. Set one in a gravel garden and you need nothing else. Instant gardening with a WOW!! They love a warm sunny position and are resistant to drought, wind, pollution and poor soils – even our alkaline shale rubble! They will adapt to less favourable conditions – and quite a degree of freezing – but they do not like constantly wet and humid climes. The fruits become apparent in autumn when they change from green to a violet/black tone and they can be small to large, rounded to oval. Those for table use should be picked earlier; for oil extraction they are left on the tree for another few weeks to mature. The oil has multiple uses, from the kitchen to beauty products and bronzing agents. The leaves are often brewed into a medicinal tea for high blood pressure and the wood is used for fashioning tools and furniture and for firewood and in charcoal production. Some 270 varieties are grown in Spain, the principal ones being arbequina, cornicabra, hojiblanco, manzanilla, picual, and verdial. Four varieties, picual, cornicabra, hojiblanca and arbequina make up 60% of the Spanish crop and, of those, picual gives almost half of Spanish oil production.
underside to the leaves, giving a very silvery look. The trees are vigorous with good sized fruits which can be harvested mechanically without damage. The oil levels are low-ish but of excellent quality with a mild flavour much appreciated by consumers. Also consumed as a table olive. Manzanilla: Cultivated mainly in the province of Caceres and Badajoz. The trees are vigorous and the fruits are of good size and shape, making them much appreciated as a table olive. They can also be used for oil extraction. Picual: The major Spanish olive, its plantings cover vast areas in Jaen and nudge into Cordoba and Granada provinces. Its oil is very rich flavoured yet stable.
‘They are beautiful in their peace, they are wise in their silence’ – Vincent Van Gogh.
Arbequina: The Catalan olive – small sized but with a very intense flavour. Its aroma and taste can vary according to the climate and soil. It produces heavy and early crops and is very cold resistant. It is grown with success in Huesca and Zaragosa and is, more recently, being introduced into Andalucia. Cornicabra: This is the principal olive grown in Castilla-La Mancha and the second most cultivated variety in Spain. It forms a tree of moderate vigour with pendulous branches. The fruit is medium/large, horn-shaped with high oil content.
Hojiblanco: Grown in the provinces of Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada and Malaga, especially in the Alpujarras, the sierra of Cadiz and around Antequera. The name derives from the very white

Verdial: Principally grown in Malaga province and especially around VelezMalaga. The trees are very vigorous and produce lots of olives - early though small. Labour costs are, therefore, higher. But the fruits produce huge quantities of oil and are of an excellent flavour. Next month we’ll look at some of the most common pests and diseases in our olive trees. We have a great range of young olive trees in the garden centre – from €1.50

BAD Language iving in Spain many foreigners struggle (some for the first time) with learning a second language. Many were never taught the principles in their own language; when I was at school grammar teaching was unfashionable. And you only need to examine English to discover how complicated things can get, from dialect to false friends, irregularity and inconsistency to colloquialisms.
L
annoying Americanisms. I particularly enjoyed ‘I could care less’ (instead of “I couldn’t care less”); ‘that’ll learn you’ (instead of “that’ll teach you”), ‘Can I get a …’ (“It's not New York. It's not the 90s. You're not in Central Perk. Really”) and, best of all, ‘the least worst option’: “The next time someone tells you something is the "least worst option", tell them that their most best option is learning grammar. ”
Think of American English. It’s so freaky: the 24/7 transportation via movies, goggle-box and web, of the latest hot slang. Or, to translate: “it is so annoying: the constant transfer from films, television and the internet of the latest popular slang into our mother tongue”. You see what I mean? Last year there were articles about the Tsunami (tidal wave) of Americanisms drowning out British English in at least 3 national newspapers, not to mention on the BBC website. The latter invited people to send in their most
Then came the back-lash: furious Americans lambasted the Beeb for being snobbish, arrogant stuck in the muds. They returned fire with “Britishisms” such as “Yeah, innit bruv”, asked if we should speak Anglo-Saxon and complained about the anti-American tone: “It was the British who first forced their culture on the rest of the world…How fitting that those same countries that they colonized are now slowly infiltrating British culture”.

All this fury misses the point. English developed as a “trading language”; a Germanic base with a good smattering of Scandinavian, a leavening of Latin, an invasion of Normandy French and, as the guy said, seasoning from every country we colonized as well as a few we didn’t get. It’s not stopped, it’s not going to stop and the changes won’t be one way, whichever country might be dominating the airwaves. British Library Linguists last year found that at the moment British English is changing more rapidly than American English is, not just by importing American terms but by all kinds of variations and inventions. In many ways Americans are traditionalists. “Gotten”, quoted on the BBC article as a horrid Americanism, was a British word first used in the 4th Century, employed by Shakespeare, Bacon and Pope, and still in use even in Britain in “forgotten” and (perhaps rather rarely) “begotten”. Similarly, the word for the year’s third season was “fall” until we adopted “autumn” from the French! Speaking of the French, have a think about how the fight against change works. The French have an official body to define, support and promote proper French: L’Académie Française. Anglicisation is the main fear, but there’s also antagonism against “minority” languages, such as Breton, Basque or Franco-Provençal. Here’s what a well-known satirical magazine had to say on permitting their use: The aborigines are going to be able to speak their patois, oh sorry, their language, without being laughed at. And even keep their accent, their beret and their clogs. But does it work? I think not. I think it impoverishes the language it’s supposed to protect. Linguists say French has about 100,000 distinct words compared to English’s 250,000+. And of course, as with so many prohibitions, the banned goods go underground. There’s official French but there are also Algerian-French hiphop artists who combine French with Arabic and English in a super-cool subculture rap. There’s official French but there’s also what people actually say: local or “Franglaise”, old-fashioned or teen slang, it’s vibrant, imaginative and uniquely French. No other language speakers leave their cars in “le parking” or play “babyfoot”. The origin might be English, but the usage is new, clear, expressive – what language should be.

And Spain? Spain has its own Académie equivalent: the Real Academia Española (RAE). In many ways it’s very similar: defining and promoting Castilian Spanish, an unhappy relationship with variants from other regions and accusations of over conservatism. It’s the RAE that insists the Spanish spelling of whisky is güisqui. But there are some sharp distinctions. For one thing the autonomous regions give unchallenged validity to regional variation. And for another thing the audience is, well, Spanish. Tell your local bar how they should spell whisky, your local school they shouldn’t send out “Christmas” (that’s Spanish for Christmas card apparently) and your internet café that “email” is too English and after a blank stare you’ll be treated as the lunatic you obviously are. So I don’t use, but I don’t mind Americanisms: shopping malls and carts, take-outs and eateries, periods and…dare I say..fanny packs? I find the appropriate silliness of “ridiculosity” delightful. I can even stand the “zeitgeist” phrases of the moment (Arab Spring? Squeezed Middle? Pinched Bottom?) in spite of all the tiresome hype. I just hate bad language. Bad language steals existing words away; confuses meaning and undermines grammar. You should say “I’m good” instead of “I’m well” unless you mean that your thoroughly virtuous and give money to charity. I can’t stand people who think they are disinterested in grammar unless they mean they’re fair and impartial instead of just bored (that’s uninterested, thicko). And I’d like to graffiti “FEWER” over every “10 items or less” supermarket sign. These aren’t gripes about British or American or Hawaiian or Kiwi or any other kind of English. These are grammar gripes about bad English. This is the other side of the coin to the dynamic, flexible and inventive nature of trading languages; sloppiness and stupidity are part of the mix. Bad language is endemic – it’s unavoidable. So if you think learning Spanish is hard, pity the Spaniards who, having left their English class with their grammar books tucked under their arm overhear “Why wasn’t they not goin’ then?” from a passing inglés! Get your coat off and come to my office for your annual appraisal' Oh the appraisal; Brian had been dreading it coming and although he truly felt he had worked to the best of his ability the design for the new dishwasher was 3 weeks behind schedule. Brian knocked on the door. 'So as well as the dishwasher project being late you're late for your appraisal as well' The rest of the unpleasant 30 minutes were a blur . to Brian; the only part of the monotone diatribe he registered was the part that said 'no annual pay rise' He got up to leave and as he began to open the door his boss asked which part of the design was left to complete. 'The compartment for putting the salt in' replied Brian with a falsely cheerful voice. Then thought 'I know where I'd like to stick the salt you feckless idiot'
The Grapevine 44
He returned to his desk and screwed up his clever design and started working on a new one. Oh yes, he'd show them exactly what he thought of them and their stupid job. Three weeks later his planned presentation on 'salt compartment location and usage' was scrapped due to the lateness of the project. The machines were proudly built in the UK and throughout the land thousands of people were happy that they could get gleaming crockery without getting the 'hands that do dishes'. This tale is totally untrue. I can only assume that something similar happened, otherwise why the hell is the salt compartment at the back of the machine meaning that you have to bend down and lean into the machine balancing a 3kg bag of salt so that you can pour it into a funnel that goes into a hole slightly bigger than a straw that is brimming with water?! This is not easy when you are a lanky git like me and I would also like to know why every dishwasher I have owned has had the same design. No please do not write in with explanations like “well the proximity of the
To advertise call 637 028 873
aperture to the flange modulator is very important to the dispersion of the salt in relation to the RPM of the motor” because I am just not having it! I can only guess that after leaving his career designing dishwashers Brian went on to work on the famous slapstick show It's a Knockout creating "hilarious" games where people could make fools of themselves and hurt themselves playing crazy and almost impossible games, so a bit like filling a dishwasher with salt dressed as a Sumo wrestler. I guess I am a bit anti-dishwasher. Does it show? Every time we turn it on I can practically hear the bosses at Endesa rubbing their hands with excitement due to the huge bill I will be receiving as each wash takes about a fortnight. I mean come on; it's not much of a hardship to wash up is it? When I was a lad living at home we never had a dishwasher. On reflection that was probably because my sister and I did it as one of our “jobs”. Mine was drying the dishes and taking out the rubbish. Even to this day I do not think that anybody can throw a bin-liner into a skip with the same aplomb that I can. Call it a gift.
Do not get me wrong I like time-saving gadgets as well as the next person and they can make a great last minute gift, a fact that I know only too well. In the past I have been bought an asparagus boiler (isn't that what a saucepan is for?) an egg boiler (saucepan again) and this year a pineapple peeler/slicer for all of the pineapples I (apparently) eat. Well at least they make a slightly more imaginative gift than socks. That said this year I might have slightly over-hinted to the family that I needed new socks, but not just any socks; I wanted loose-top socks that do not cut into your legs and make them look like you have had an elastic band round them. So I ended up with 27 pairs of new socks. Luxury! I can go nearly a whole month wearing brand new socks every day just like Jerry Lewis the comedian. Just in case you were wondering, the asparagus boiler has never been tried it does however make a very nice utensil holder. I just microwave my asparagus and anyway the boiler does not fit into the dishwasher. No, don't start me off again……… Andy Wilkes

FyRST Translations FyRSTranslations was founded by Daniel Fernández and Leticia Rubí in 2003 to render a professional translation and interpreting service and providing the highest quality and efficient standard to fit the requirements that the current demanding clients deserve. Their quests for excellence and customer-facing solutions have become the foundations supporting FyRSTranslations—they always offer their clients a free assessment service to provide them the best advice, to obtain excellent professional results and for the most convenient price. Why a translation and interpreting professional service? “After 7 years living in the Axarquía region and working with local and foreign clients, we realized that the practice of translation and interpreting services in this region was not exercised with the minimum standard quality that local foreign citizens deserved. The practice of this profession not only requires to be fluent in a particular language but also the knowledge of professional skills. We considered then that clients demanding this translation and interpreting services deserved a professional standardized service with fair prices matching an appropriate professional quality”. Daniel Fernández y Leticia Rubi graduated from the University of Granada with a Translation and Interpreting Degree. They are also Sworn Translators recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which qualifies them to provide official translations of any type of documents. They already have a worldwide professional experience which they have developed and implemented in different professional fields all along the world: from Liverpool to Passau (Germany) and from Kampala (Uganda) to Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban in South Africa—while in South Africa, they cooperated with several institutions as the Spanish and Mexican Embassies in Pretoria and also lectured at Witwatersrand University (Johannesburg). Their translation and Interpreting services were rendered in all Southern Africa for local companies and NGOs and they also took part in

the main international conferences held in the region. Why do I need a professional translation and interpreting service? When translating or interpreting any type of specialized or technical written or oral texts, a deep knowledge on the “subjects” which is being dealt is required. Legal or medical texts, for example, normally require not only a deep approach to understand their meaning in their “source” language but also a deep analysis to correctly transfer the meaning to the “target culture and language” to be properly understood. Professional translators and interpreters normally know the “proper means” to reach this specialized knowledge. This normally leads them to become “experts” in certain specialized subjects. Please, ask yourself, why do you go to the eye doctor when you cannot properly see instead of buying a pair of glasses in the street market? The most sensible decision is to attend the professional medical consultation; otherwise, the problem may get worse. FyRSTranslations has specialized in providing translation services of all types of legal and technical texts as well as academic or medical documents, because they count on a professional team of translators qualified to offer the highest standard. Currently, FyRSTranslations is located in VélezMálaga and Malaga rendering translation and interpreting services to their clients in any location, as their professional translators' network already covers most of the Axarquía and Costa del Sol regions. FyRSTranslations provides translation and interpreting services in any language and professional field, including Sworn Translations (Official Translations). Their professional translators' team guarantees the best service which clients deserve. “Our main distinguishing mark is our clients' satisfaction.”

History of Valentines Day
T
he history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he

wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Readymade cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) and Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women.

The range of products is still as extensive but now it's all easier to see and find what you are looking for. It is described by customers as a cross between Boots and Holland and Barrett. alentine's Day is coming and we are all broke! Don't worry. We've got some great ideas that will save you from looking cheap on Valentine's Day. I can't speak for you blokes but most of us girls would prefer a small personal gift that was big on thought. So rabbits and plastic hearts are out, and as for what's in… that's the whole point you have decided! If you're really stuck, you know where to come. Asking for help isn't cheating it shows thought which a big plus is on the romance scores. .
A romantic restaurant dinner is always great. But if this year you can't afford it, why not eat at home? .
There's nothing less romantic than a spouse in the kitchen all day, sweating, swearing and stressing and then standing back expecting to reap the rewards of being such a desirable partner. So my advice is to follow the engineering KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Focus on the things that count. Set the scene, background music shows effort (as long as it's not Motorhead). Romantic vibes are important and nothing says romance like flickering candles. I LOVE candlelight, it hides wrinkles, dust and all sorts of other undesirable and unromantic things. .
At Sugar and Spice we love food and our web site lists some of our favourite recipes, for easy dishes that offer that WOW factor check out:Filo-Wrapped Oriental Salmon or Duck in Red Currant Sauce. If however you are culinarychallenged, you can still plan a romantic dinner at home for two. .
This year we are offering a 3 course meal for two for only 17.95€. Full details will be available from February 2nd either in the shop or on our web-site. We will also be taking orders from this date on a first come first served basis.

isa Edelman is a young artist living in Competa with her family and her boyfriend Jose, owner of Portichuelo Ferreteria and the soon to be ´El Boutique´ in the centre of town. Many of you may have seen her working in either of these places, playing Cinderella in the local pantomime or singing in the choir One Voice. However, her talents don’t end with fluent Spanish and local amateur dramatics; she is an excellent craftswomen and ceramist. I interviewed her in November of last year just before she opened up her home to exhibit her new collection of work showcasing her ceramics. I arrived later in the afternoon to where most of her items had already been sold and more commissioned for Christmas. “I have always made things but for quite a while I wasn’t sure where this was going to lead

to. I did Fine Art A-level and afterwards an Art Foundation course but after this I wasn’t sure what to do or where to study!” Lisa explained. She eventually discovered a perfect course at the University of Falmouth, called Contemporary Crafts which encompassed different skills such as glassware, fine metalwork and ceramics. Over the 3 year course Lisa chose to specialise in Porcelain and Digital Technologies. This combination of traditional and contemporary design skills has allowed her to develop new techniques within a very traditional practice, making her work unique. Lisa now develops her work through the use of computer aided design and then hand building the items so each one is unique. She has developed new processes within the ceramic practice which now are being taught and used

at Falmouth. Since Falmouth, she was invited to join the New Designers exhibition in London where she was spotted and interviewed by the Society of Designer Craftsmen. Lisa was accepted to become a member of this society and was subsequently asked to exhibit at The Mall Galleries in London. Also a result of New Designers she was asked to exhibit at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery. Both exhibitions resulted in the selling of work and last year she was presented with a Licentiate Award from the Society of Designers.
In between developing her new collection Lisa has been designing ´El Boutique´, the new outlet opening in the original premises of the old Bazar de Competa. This has been a massive project but has allowed her to use her creative ideas in a different way and eventually she will use the store to showcase her collections too. For that perfect, unique and special gift for Valentines Day give Lisa a call or email. Her contact details can be found on her advert.
So what has Lisa been up to this year? Firstly her studio has extended and has moved to above the Portichuelo Ferretria. This is where she works and appointments can be made to see her work and the handmade process. She has developed a new collection and has been experimenting with glazes, although the majority of her work is still made exclusively from high fired self vitrified Audrey Blackman porcelain. This porcelain body becomes completely non porous during the firing process and therefore does not need to be glazed. Using her technique of mould making led by digital design, moulds are created to allow work to be personalized, perfect for christenings, birthdays and of course Valentines Day. New ranges in her collection include porcelain lamps, which when lit from inside create beautiful ambient lightening to any room and show off her relief text process to its fullest effect. Also, little incense burners, hanging hearts on ribbon, small jugs and personalized cards are available to purchase.

Preparation method Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas2. .
Place the cayenne, black pepper, paprika, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon into a small bowl and mix to combine. Place the lamb in a large bowl and toss together with half of the spice mix. Cover and leave overnight in the fridge. .
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp of argan oil in a large casserole dish. Add the grated onion and the remaining spice mix and cook over a gentle heat for 10 minutes so that the onions are soft but not coloured. Add the crushed garlic for the final 3 minutes. .
In a separate frying pan, heat the remaining oil and brown the cubes of lamb on all sides then add the browned meat to the casserole dish. Deglaze the frying pan with ¼ pint of tomato juice and add these juices to the pan. .
Add the remaining tomato juice, chopped tomatoes, apricots, dates, raisins or sultanas, flaked almonds, saffron, lamb stock and honey to the casserole dish. .
Bring to the boil, cover with a fitted lid, place in the oven and cook for 22½ hours or until the meat is meltingly tender. .
Place the lamb in a tagine or large serving dish and sprinkle over the chopped herbs. Serve.

Cómpeta Swimming Pool “ Living in England but spending around a quarter of the year in total in Canillas de Albaida, we use the Competa swimming pool quite frequently when in Spain. Most people unfortunately don't, and often there are only two or three people in, and usually ex-pats.
prices to encourage you to go. Don’t forget Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise.
The concern is that without more support it will end up closed for much of the year, as previously. The pool is excellent and clean, the showers warm (now) and the staff obliging. At 3 Euros (OAPs 2), it is excellent value and provides the healthy exercise that smaller pools can not easily give, especially in the winter months.”
Entrance is 3euro (discount for OAP’s and the disabled.)Payment is made at the desk when entering the pool building

At the heart of the 'wine route' in Competa is the 'wine museum'. Decorated with Andalusian charm, it has recovered the warm, friendly ambience of the wine cellars with its braced arches, brick columns and seasoned wood. Along with the delicious muscatel wines, dry, sweet, young and mature, made from the Rome variety of muscatel grapes, the local gastronomy includes the best cooked meat and sausages in the district, black puddings, pork loin, chorizo sausage, which you can buy together with other typical products like honey, raising, figs, olive oil, ceramics and rugs, in the 'wine museum' ..... Don't step on the ducks Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here: Don't step on the ducks!” They enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It's almost impossible not to step on them. Although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one. Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she's ever seen. St. Peter chains them together and says: “Your punishment is to spend eternity chained to this man!” The next day, the second woman makes the same mistake and along comes St. Peter with another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment. The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, becomes very careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any duck, but one day, St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid her eyes on—tall, long eyelashes, muscular. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word. The happy woman says, “I wonder what I've done to deserve being chained to you?” The guy says, “I don't know about you, but I stepped on a duck!” 74

THE PARTY
THE CARNIVAL
A man and his wife were returning from a party one evening. As the couple was driving home, she asked her husband, "Honey, has anyone ever told you how handsome, sexy and irresistible to women you are?"
A man and a woman go to the carnival every year. Every time the man says,"Anna can we ride them airplanes that goes up for a couple of minutes then comes back down?"
Totally flattered, he replied, "No, dear they haven't." At that point she yelled, "Then what the heck gave you THAT idea at the party tonight?"
The woman always replied by saying,"We don`t need to spend any extra money on them airplanes, its to expensive.Ten dollars is ten dollars. Tom, the pilot, said," Larry, every year I hear you say you want to ride my airplanes, and every year Anna says it`s too expensive. I`ll make you a deal, if I do all of my flips and tricks with you in there with me, and you don`t say one word, I`ll give you the ride for free.
Rose -via Facebook
Anna and Larry discussed it and decided they would take the deal. They got up in the air and Tom did all of his tricks and flips.
THE PRINTER
Tom said,"Larry I just knew you`d say something on that first flip, but you didn`t!
I had been doing Tech Support for HewlettPackard's DeskJet division for about a month when I had a customer call with a problem I just couldn't solve. She could not print yellow. All the other colors would print fine, which truly baffled me because the only true colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow. For instance, green is a combination of cyan and yellow, but green printed fine. Every color of the rainbow printed fine except for yellow. I had the customer change ink cartridges. I had the customer delete and reinstall the drivers. Nothing worked. I asked my coworkers for help; they offered no new ideas. After over two hours of troubleshooting, I was about to tell the customer to send the printer in to us for repair when she asked quietly, "Should I try printing on a piece of white paper instead of this yellow paper?”
Rose -via Facebook
Larry replied," i was going to say something when Anna fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars.

WORD ASSOCIATION An elderly couple had been experiencing declining memories, so they decided to take a power memory class where one is taught to remember things by association. A few days after the class, the old man was outside talking with his neighbor about how much the class helped him. "What was the name of the Instructor?" asked the neighbor. "Oh, ummmm, let's see," the old man pondered. "You know that flower, you know, the one that smells really nice but has those prickly thorns, what's that flower's name?" "A rose?" asked the neighbor. "Yes, that's it," replied the old man. He then turned toward his house and shouted, "Hey, Rose, what's the name of the Instructor we took the memory class from?"

COMMUNITY LUNCH AT EL PILON El Pilon was delighted to welcome 45 very special guests for a Three Kings community lunch. This was made possible with support from CARITAS and Tom and Gwen Ferber. Our guests enjoyed a three course meal with wine and drinks and each received a 3 Kings gift, thanks to the generosity of Pilon customers and the help of Sugar and Spice. Christian's dad, Clem dressed as a King to distribute gifts with great style. Our Mayor came along to welcome everyone and was gracious and friendly to all. This event would not have been possible without an amazing group of volunteers who came in to serve our guests and support Christian and Adam in the kitchen, many thanks to a great crew, pictured here. We will now make the Pilon 3 Kings Community Lunch an annual occasion where we can thank our local community appropriately. Many thanks from the El Pilon team. THE VILLAGE FELINE After a minor dispute between a German resident & a Spanish resident, how can the Town Hall justify the callous killing of our beautiful feral feline society, when the law

clearly dictates it illegal to put down a healthy animal? A long, ongoing campaign involving great cost, time, effort and love had insured the sterilization of 99% of the cats. Unlike dogs, cats are very clean animals and are a precious solution nature offers the village, as they eradicate vermin. Maybe the Town Hall are in preference of our pretty village being riddled with rats, or will they sanction buckets of poison that will then threaten all of our domestic pets? A disappointed resident.
ART EXHIBITION TORROX COSTA. The exhibition is for the whole of February and it is open whenever the Town Hall/ Library and Tourist Information Office are open at the roundabout on Torrox Costa. The four Artists are all ladies who live locally and have attended classes in Nerja. They have varying styles of painting between them which should make for a colourful and interesting exhibition. Entrance is free.
ILLEGAL PROPERTIES The regional government’s plan to regularise the dozens of thousands of illegal properties is not proving successful. Owners of the properties are refusing to pay the costs of bringing their properties into legality. In most cases the regional council for public works and housing have offered a ‘recognition’ of the properties – a legal device to allow them to come out of limbo and gain access to power and water. But this needs the collaboration of the citizens, and their money In the Axarquía where many foreigners have purchased such property in good faith, say they are against the latest decree from the Junta last week. President of the Save Our Homes association, Philip Smalley, says the formula will just leave thousands of properties in the district in limbo. He says there is no judicial guarantee after the process because the Junta will be able to do what they want with the properties in the future. The Junta has identified 12,760 irregular properties in the Axarquía.

NEW CAR PARK FOR NERJA Nerja Town Hall has given the go-ahead for the town’s third municipal car park which will cost some €3 million. The car park will have 200 spaces on three levels and will be located near Burriana beach. The Councillor for Infrastructures, the conservative Partido Popular’s Antonio Garcia, said that the work will take around 18 months. He also pointed out that they would be paid for by the central government. Nerja has 733 spaces in underground car parks in Plaza de España, near the Balcon de Europa, and 273 in another car park near the Verano Azul Park. There are also 70 spaces in the covered pavilion.

ELECTRICITY BILLS Electricity bills in Spain are going back to two monthly, ending the much criticised current arrangement where there is an estimation of use every other month. The Industry Ministry has said that it wants the consumer to pay for what he or she uses. However the Ministry is offering the chance for the public which wants to continue paying monthly, although meters will still only be read every two months and there will be estimations on alternate months, as now. PLANNING CORRUPTION A Malaga criminal court has acquitted the former mayor of Colmenar, Pedro Fernandez Palomo, charged with urban planning corruption. The public prosecutor was asking a year in prison and an eight-year ban from public .Meanwhile, the former Mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, Jose Manuel Aranda, is also due to stand trial this month for allegedly granting a licence to build a house on nonurban land. The public prosecutor is asking for four years in prison and a 20-year ban from holding public office.
