Editors Note..... Last month we got a dog! After a few years of pleading, whinging and negotiating by the children we were finally persuaded or sheer worn down by them. My only criteria was it had to be small. The children of course just wanted a dog they could love, take care of and take out for walks. We spent time surfing the CAS and A.P.A.R.I.V. website’s and any others we could find. Doing a bit of research made me realise how much these charities do for dogs and cats in the area.

As we looked at pictures I kept saying no and the children were saying “what about this one or that one!” In the end I chose one but the kids still kept suggesting others. However, I knew I had found the right dog for our family. We of course all wanted to visit the dog and we found out his name was Pippin. He was lovely and although slightly bigger that I had originally wanted, I took one look and knew he was perfect for us. Four weeks later Pipin loves his parents as we go walking and running with him every day. With regards to the children their excitement still hasn’t warn off and Pipin is now getting used to their constant devotion and attention. News in Spain ENTERPRISING ALMERÍA YOUNGSTER TRACKS DOWN ROBBERS AND GETS HIS STOLEN PROPERTY BACK. An Almería youngster who was the victim of a robbery when he was assaulted by three youths on a street in the city centre, has had the stolen items returned after using the Internet to identify his three assailants. El Mundo newspaper reports that the 14 year old knew his attackers by sight, but had no idea of their names or where they lived. He trawled social network sites on the net until he managed to identify two of the thieves and passed the information onto police. All three have now been arrested and police have recovered and returned the 14 year old’s stolen gold jewellery. MÁLAGA OWNERS' COMMUNITY DECIDES ONLY SPANISH SPEAKERS CAN BE ITS PRESIDENT. A community of property owners in Málaga has approved as a new requirement for any person who wishes to act as president of the community that they must be able to speak and write Spanish. The measure was unanimously approved at the annual meeting of the city’s Torres de San Andrés community, which also agreed that the cost of interpreting and translating into any language other than Spanish must be met by the resident who requests it. The news was given to the EFE news agency by Antonio Sierra, founder of the association ‘Diversidad y Convivencia’ – ‘Diversity and Coexistence’. They believe that the Horizontal Property Law, the legislation which governs communities of property owners in Spain, is now obsolete and needs to be changed to cover the problems which can arise at some community meetings where some of the owners are unable to speak Spanish. The association also plans to ask all Town Halls

in Andalucía to implement local by-laws stipulating that all shops must display signs at least in Spanish and must employ staff who are able to communicate in the Spanish language with their customers. SUSPECT GETS 25 YEARS FOR DEATH OF BRITISH MAN IN BENALMÁDENA. A man named as Francisco C.J. has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the death of a British man in Benalmádena two years ago. The victim, Frederick S., was robbed and beaten by the accused and left lying unconscious in his home, which was set alight by his assailant as he fled. La Opinión de Málaga reports that the robber had followed him home from a local bar and knocked the British man unconscious by hitting him on the head with a portable stereo. Francisco C.J. ransacked the flat in his search for valuables, but left with nothing more than two mobile phones and some British currency after setting fires in two separate points in the flat. The victim was rescued alive, but died in hospital three weeks later. MIGRANTS RESCUED FROM INFLATABLE TOY BOAT IN THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR A group of migrants were rescued off the coast of Cádiz province after trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar in an inflatable toy boat. The merchant ship the MSC Sabana contacted the Coastguard advising that the crew had spotted a vessel which appeared to have capsized. The boat, with seven adult male passengers from Sub Saharan Africa on board, was intercepted seven kilometres to the south west of the Isla de Tarifa. EFE reports that they were all in good health, although two were suffering slight hypothermia.

Summer Walks E

arly spring walks are a guessing game with the weather. It’s often blissfully bright, clear and cool – perfect for a good hike on the heights. But rain is always possible and can roll up the valley in half an hour or less. Often the change in temperature is pleasant if you are powering away uphill and those windblown sheets of rain look fantastic…from a distance. Later spring walks you are as likely to find yourself worrying about the sun as the rain. It is an incredibly beautiful landscape to walk through. The sun brings the countryside into ecstatic bloom – every flower and herb you can imagine. You’re off out into the most beautiful hillsides you can imagine on a glorious sunny day … and you’ve hay fever … and sweat in your eyes… “I’m so hot”, you gasp, “…more uphill? What do you mean I forgot to sun cream the back of my neck?” Now, as we are coming into summer and the real heat, walking seems to be coming to an end. The spring flowers are slowly, slowly wilting back, making way for the few flamboyant plants that show right through the drought: the violent pink of oleander bushes, the dishevelled yellow bushes of helicrysum. The rest is dust dry grasses. It is easy to think, if you come out in the middle of the day under the hot sun when sensible people siesta, and the birds are silent and even insects can only manage an occasional sleepy buzz, that the natural world has gone to bed too. But it’s not true. But you can still enjoy excellent walks, see glorious views, get to see the summer fauna and

flora that gets forgotten, and enjoy it without melting. Even in summer. How? By being an early bird. Last year I went out with Nicola of Walking and Andalucía in the early mornings; we walked up river valleys in the shade and felt the summer-strange feeling of chill! With the sun just peeping into the valleys the birds were still singing in the bushes and the little lizards are trying to warm up on the sandy paths. You can wander along beside a bubbling stream – the Turvilla and Cájula don’t coming from high in the Sierras don’t dry up. And if you prefer a longer walk there’s no reason you can’t. I climbed Cerro Verde (also with Walking and Andalucía): it’s 1326 metres, which meant a climb of about 750 metres, in September last year – and we were back in time for a late lunch. We didn’t melt – as the day got really hot we were coming downhill through woodland shade. We did see eagles; we heard bee-eaters; we saw a snake hiding in the shade of stones on a firebreak; we saw ibex skipping up a hillside too steep for me to climb! But if all that sounds a bit too vigorous, there’s still no reason you can’t enjoy this glorious countryside this summer. Get out into the natural park and see it! Find a walk that suits you – high, low, flora or views, flat and easy or steep but interesting! Walking and Andalucía will be doing a whole variety of walks ending with picnics at the Fabrica de la Luz in Canillas. Why not be an early bird and try one out? You can be back in time for an afternoon swim. And don’t worry, you needn’t miss out on your beauty sleep: there’s always the siesta to help you catch up! See advert on page 34

35th Anniversary of a Real Estate Agent

“

I think there were only one or two foreigners living in the Cómpeta area, when I came down with the first group of Scandinavian clients in 1976”, says Steen Hastrup-Stilling from Inland Property Centre, who now celebrates his 35th anniversary as a real estate agent and contractor in the Axarquia region “You could say that Cómpeta was a completely unspoiled and rather sleepy village, where a large part of the population had chosen to work abroad or moved to Madrid or Barcelona in search of a sustainable existence. There was simply not enough work in the area, as tourism had not yet had an effect on the inland area and the local farmers were depending on crops such as grapes, olives and almonds at a time when irrigation had not yet reached a scale that would support the widespread growing a avocados, mangos and other yields in need of much more water than the traditional “secano” crops, which would survive on the winter rain only, but the harvest of which would not be able to support a young family.” In the early seventies Steen worked in Spain as a freelance journalist and photographer with a speciality in writing about nature, and people living from the land. He spent time living and working with the farmers trying to make a living in the mountains of the Costa del Sol hinterland. Some of his readers found it so interesting that they contacted him asking if one could buy a property in the area. So he asked around, and that is how he started a new “Viking invasion”, although this time without raping and pillaging!

This created a lot of work for the local population, and gradually the Competeños and other villagers started to return to their home towns, finding work and a good income. Steen's young wife Lisa was not too happy with her husband being away most of the time, so in 1981 they moved to Cómpeta on a permanent basis. They moved into a big old townhouse in Calle Peligro, built a small finca on irrigated land between Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida, and divided their life between being in the real estate business and in small scale farming based on organic growing and self sufficiency. In 1986, together with friends, they created Country Properties S.A. where Steen became the managing director and Lisa the administrator. For years this was the only company operating in the area, but after 20 years of running the company, Lisa and Steen chose to take early retirement. However Steen's nephew Thomas, who had been working as sales manager in Country Properties for five years, had chosen to create his own company - Inland Property Centre. Then Thomas found the love of his life in Denmark, and wanted to go back to his home country and start a new life and a new family.

At the time Steen's office was located in Copenhagen. From there he arranged viewings every 14 days for groups of between 30 and 40 people, all wanting to buy old fincas or townhouses at cheap prices. Lisa and Steen bought his real estate business, and this is how the situation is today, where Steen, who has been behind more that 4.500 sales in the Axarquia region, is now working fewer hours and spending more time enjoying his many other interests and therefor leaving the running of the company to Lisa and a professional English staff, doing their utmost to cater for clients who think it is an advantage to use their many years of experience in the Axarquia region, where Steen, more than anybody else, has put his mark of the development of tourism and employment in the area. We wish him a Happy Anniversary!

Philippine von Krusenstierna

his month I interviewed Philippine von Krusenstierna who belongs to the CompetaArt group. She is the first of the artists we will be featuring from the group over the coming months. Philipine lives in Canillas de Albaida but was originally born in Berlin and is actually Swedish. Philippine spent a few years as a child in London and Germany and then later lived and worked in Sweden, so her English is impeccable. Philippine relayed to me her enjoyment to paint or draw was knocked out of her in her early years at school when her Art teacher drew over or changed anything Philippine did. Philippine graduated in 1966 from The Graphical Institute in Stockholm and then worked as a graphical designer with an advertising agency. After designing schoolbooks for a few years she then embarked on magazine design. During her career she worked at several of the large printing houses in Sweden. Philippine participated in launching two new magazines into the market and also in the redesign of Sweden's largest monthly magazine. Over the years Philppine had always wanted take up painting despite the early knock back at school. However, it seemed she was always too busy and some how her profession as a graphical designer stopped her from doing it. Perhaps, she explained, the two were too close to each other. Although she described her design work as reproducing reality and this was not what she had in mind to do herself for enjoyment. Philippine attended evening classes in Stockholm but didn't find they worked for her. It was only when she came into contact with “Vedicart” that her skills and enjoyment levels improved and her expectations over painting began to be met. Vedicart was started by a Swedish artist, Curt Källman, who found that all those that went to traditional Art schools came out painting the same way. He ”created”17 principals allowing you to find your own way of painting. “Vedicart” classes can now be found all over Scandinavia and even in Australia and Philippine still attends these classes on an annual basis.

In 1982 she bought a house in Canillas de Albaida and retired to Spain in 2004 after meeting her husband a Norwegian man in the bar next door to her home in Canillas, his house then became her studio! I asked Philippine about how she goes about painting and she answered “very seldom do I know what I am going to paint, so I just get started and see what happens. Sometimes there are many layers of paint until I see something coming out of the canvas. It is not only the process that inspires me but also colours, forms and structures. In the painting process I find a spiritual aspect that is very important to me. Sometimes I can paint 20 pictures in a few weeks or weeks can go by when I paint nothing”. After our chat we walked to her studio in Canillas which was a lovely place full of her work displayed on the walls along with work in progress. She also showed me her sculptures ands described how interesting working in 3D was. The studio was visited by over 70 people from the CompetaArt walkabout weekend and she gained a few sales during the two days and also afterwards as a result of the weekend. Philippine described the CompetaArt group as a great way to get to know people with similar interests and the walkabout was a great project for them all to do together. erennials – from the Latin per meaning ‘through’ and annus meaning ‘year’ – are plants that live for more than two years. Their counterparts are annuals, which live for only one year, and biennials which live for two years. Loosely we use the term to refer to winter hardy plants – either evergreen or deciduous; shrubs and trees are also perennials in the broadest sense of the word, but I’d like to talk about smaller perennials. They’re immensely useful. They can quickly fill odd gaps in the garden and are stunning when

used in big swathes that drift and unite other plantings. They bring bright splashes of colour and, because they’re, generally, quite cheap you can afford to splash out on them. Many will split for spreading or come easily from cuttings. There are loads and loads and many have special childhood memories for us, so I’m just going to try and remind you of a few that may conjure up special moments for you. In no particular order, as they say! Poppies, Iceland type, papaver nudicaule. These luscious poppies bear crepe-paper like petals in

dazzling shades of coral, pink, rose, yellow, orange, cream and white. Watching their fat buds split and spill their wrinkled petals is one of the joys of late spring. Bees, butterflies and birds also love them – and my grand-daughter too but, then, don’t we all! They set masses of tiny seeds so you’ll always have them springing up in your garden, unexpected but delightful. Lupins, lupinus angustifolius with their towering bi-coloured flowers are beautiful and useful too. They are one of the plants that ‘fix’ nitrogen in the soil. Again, they’re great for foraging springtime bumble bees and, if you have a swathe of land where you want to improve the soil, plant with lupins then turn the plants into the soil when they have finished flowering. A great ‘green manure’ for the benefit of future plantings. Indian Blanketflower, gaillardia pulchella, can easily blanket a square metre and, by selfseeding, continue its wandering. It has very eyecatching daisies, either in the traditional red/yellow combo (impress your Spanish neighbours!) or in the newer russet shades. Its fiery fury is sure to impress. Montbretia, crocosmia or falling stars, is another fiery planting, as indicated by the variety ‘Lucifer’ – a searing paprika red. Their vigorous iris-like leaves form imposing clumps crowned by gently arching flowering stems. Commonly known as montbretia from the French botanist Montbret, the name crocosmia comes from the Greek krokos meaning saffron and osme meaning smell, referring to the saffron scent given off by the dried flowers when placed in water. Their deep colouration makes this a great, and cheap, substitute for saffron. Tick Flower, coreopsis, is a brilliant sunshine plant – its rich golden yellow daisies just have to make you smile! A member of the sunflower family, it’s one of the easiest, most durable and rewarding to grow, and is very tolerant of poor soils. Deadhead – or take flowers for bunches of joy indoors – and you’ll have a wonderfully long show, which draws in fluttering butterflies too. At the end of the season, leave the seed heads for the

Although all these cartridges are tested before they are sold there will always be the occasional one that does not meet your expectations. Keep in mind that remanufactured cartridges often are (a lot) less expensive and/or contain 2 or even 3 times the amount of ink as the original cartridge and can therefore work out much cheaper! he family business, Portichuelo Properties, was founded in 2004 by Nicola & Richard Bress, after working with a real estate agent on the coast, and, since then, has been selling dream homes in the Cómpeta area to people from all over Europe. The Bress family first arrived in Spain in April 2002, and, having lived in Canterbury, Kent our whole lives, it was quite a shock to the system! Each member of the family faced different trials and tribulations, from struggling with the language, to trying to fit in, in a Spanish school (with all the rough and tumble!). Especially difficult was (and is) the unnecessarily complicated bureaucracy, by which you practically have to fill in a form to go to the toilet or make a cup of tea! Having faced just about every difficulty possible, we are uniquely placed to offer clients advice and assistance with every aspect of buying property and living in Spain. Currently run by me, Nicola, and my daughter, Holly, we are able to empathise with clients across the whole age range. Cómpeta is a great place for everyone, and everyone is provided for from children, teenagers and into the later years. However, after nine years we all finally feel settled in and now couldn't picture our lives out of Cómpeta. It has become our hometown. We fell in love with it the first time we came here and it hasn't been out of our minds since. el and Andy from E.G.O. Hair and Beauty are now into their 2nd month at their new premises in Competa. Over the last 4 years their business has gone from strength to strength. Now with more space and private rooms they can comfortably accommodate Melâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skills and more therapists. So in these more difficult times they have managed to expand their business even further. Mel previously offered manicures, pedicures, eyelash tinting and brow shaping. However, with a private room and further training Mel now provides waxing and eastern head massage and hopes to be able to offer facials by the end of the year. Mel and Andy explained their expansion was really pushed by their clientele asking for further treatments. Once they publicised their move, therapists approached them, thus their business plan evolved and still is evolving. Currently they have 4 guest therapists (more detail over the next few pages) and Mel or Andy would be happy to have a chat with anyone else that would like to join them on a monthly or weekly basis. Diary of a Thespian (Pt II) S

o we were well into rehearsals for this year's CAMPO panto, Snow White and the Seven (not so dwarf) Dwarfs, and things were really taking shape. One major change was a switch in venue from the Balcon to the Museo de Artes y Costumbres, formerly the Casa de Cultura. It represented an interesting new venue to rehearse and ultimately to present the Panto. It was certainly a more intimate place to perform with the audience uncomfortably close. Behind the scenes, so to speak, an army of volunteers were working on costumes, props, stage, lighting and sound. The first sight of the scenery was a very impressive work by John Plush with the usual hidden messages and bits you have to look closely at to see exactly what is being represented. While John worked on scenery his wife, Vonya, had her work cut out with the dancing dwarfs. Now I never thought when I got involved in the Panto I would be breaking off from friends' BBQs early on a Sunday afternoon for a bit of dancing practice. I don't take lightly to missing out on a skin full of ale and a belly full of BBQ'd ribs. Panto rehearsals were given the name Panto Club amongst friends. Maybe it was a way of making it sound more macho aligning it with the well known film, Fight Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first rule of Panto Club, we don't talk about Panto Club. The second rule of Panto Club, we don't talk about Panto Club!â&#x20AC;? Well, I wasn't quite Brad Pitt more cesspit with some of the risque lines I was delivering. The dance was coming on but it was resembling The Dance of the Fairy Elephants as opposed to the Dance of the Sugar Plumb Fairies. Shadow steps, jazz steps, jazz hands and teapot poses. What have I let myself in for? I was risking my reputation as a pillar of the retail community (Yeh, right!) to a pillock of the community. Some might say the latter has always been the case. Vonya had kindly videoed the dance routine and a DVD copy was handed out to us so we could practice at home. WHAT?! You want me to actually prance about in my living room to this? My audience, Debbie and our two dogs, were less than impressed. So was I to be fair. I was losing R-E-S-P-E-C-T for myself rapidly.

We then had the stage constructed, which had been kindly donated by the alcalde and suddenly the 'theatre' was taking shape. At 70cms off the floor I and a few others had about 5cms of headroom. Good job there was no jumping around as some of us would be wearing ceiling tiles. Before long we had a lighting rig, sound effects and the scenery had been maneuvered into place. Some already had pretty much full costume and props were in evidence. This is getting real now. Scripts were down but line learning was still an issue for some. Mave, our prompt, was working overtime with some, keeping the dialogue on track. As costumes were close to being ready for a Thursday rehearsal I needed to go shopping for some extra items. I don't want to give too much away at this stage but if anybody thought they saw me wandering round the ladies clothing departments of Dunnes Stores and Eroski supermarket holding up leggings you were mistaken. It wasn't me. Was this Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Robin Hood - Men in Tights? The show was advertised across the Costa del Sol, including a proposed appearance on Talk Radio Europe and the Hannah Murray Show. At the time of writing this I'm still awaiting to find out whether we are to wear costume, as they did last year for the Cinderella promotion. This may sound strange, I know, when it's radio but maybe I have the costume (and some say the face) for radio. More of this in July's final part of Diary of a Thespian. So with only weeks to go to the opening night there still seems to be much to do but at the same time we have all come a long way in preparing and rehearsing the show. Tickets have been flying out and threats have been made by some potential audience members of a bit of heckling to come. Bring it on, I say. Remember what happened in last year's show to the last audience member who took heckling to new heights. It's all part of Panto but in preparation I must log onto www.heckling_retorts.com and get prepared. Now let me try one more time to get into those leggings. Alick Howard

POLITICS While walking down the street one day a "Member of Parliament" is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. 'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.' 'No problem, just let me in, 'says the man. 'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity'. 'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the MP. 'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.' And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises.... The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. 'Now it's time to visit heaven.' So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realises it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. 'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity'. The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell. ' So St. Peter escorts him to the lift and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the lift open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and rubbish. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more rubbish falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand, 'stammers the MP'. Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of rubbish and my friends look miserable. What happened? ' The devil looks at him, smiles and says, ' Yesterday we were campaigning.. Today you voted.’

Yawara Jitsu – Children receive their first grade. As the mother of an 8 year old boy with seemingly endless energy, I was delighted when I received a flyer from The Formas Gymnasium in Cómpeta. They were going to be providing Yawara Jitsu classes for children and my son was keen to join. I, like many other people, had never heard of this particular martial art, however, with the help of my good friend ‘Google’ I soon found out that the martial art of Yawara-Jitsu appeared in 1975, in the gymnasium Toyama in Málaga. The expectation of this modern system of personal defense is based on the necessity of using many selfdefense techniques against various aggressions, with a proven efficiency. This discipline uses the best techniques for self-defense from various martial arts (including Judo, Karate, Aikido, Kung-Fu, Thai Boxing, etc) to create a scientific system of self-defense which strives to be rational and progressive and attains the maximum efficiency with minimum of effort. isn’t, and best of all, my little boy absolutely adores it!! Since the classes began in October of last year (2010) the boys and girls who take part in these classes have progressed steadily and surely, they have grown in confidence and strength and have great fondness and respect for their teacher Sergio Ortega Gallardo.

Sergio is a Black Belt second Dan in Yawara Jitsu and appears to have eternal patience with his, sometimes unruly students. He has worked tirelessly with each of the children and they are now able to display two controlled routines of positions showing the various movements and stances that are required in the discipline, along with a number of techniques for defense. All very impressive for children aged between 5 and 11 years old. On Friday 6th May, the hard work and effort was rewarded when the class was joined by an outside adjudicator. Each pupil was expected to perform individually and in pairs under strict conditions in an attempt to earn their first grade. The

students performed beautifully, with confidence and pride and I am pleased to say that every child passed with flying colours. They are now proud holders of ‘Yellow Belts’ and ready to compete in their first ever competition which takes place in Nerja this summer. Wish them luck!!! If you have children who are interested in joining the classes, they take place on Mondays and Fridays at Formas Gym in Competa, the first class for younger children (5-8) starts at 5 o’clock and finishes at 6.15. The second class for the older children is from 6.15 until 7.30pm.

SWEDISH ARTIST OPENS SHOW 14 JUNE Contact: Stefan van Drake, 951 067 703 or 633456926 Swedish painter Chris Kajtorp opens a show of her paintings on 14 June at Cerezo´s Gallery in Canillas de Albaida. Her father was a well known painter, so she started painting at an early age. In 1956, she put on her first exhibition in the technique of Batik. At the age of 17, she studied art in Stockholm and after several small exhibitions in her home town and Stockholm; she left Sweden and settled in Majorca in 1970. She continued designing clothes, including the costumes for the musical “Hair” when the show appeared Palma de Majorca. From 1978 to 1979, she studied graphic arts at the Kyrkerud school of Art in Värmland, Sweden. She has lived in Spain more than 26 years. A.P.A.Ri.V. This year has been particularly troublesome as the number of abandoned dogs continues to increase.
