Editors Note..... In the month of March we turn a corner with the weather and with the clocks changing (see Alick Howards article on page 42) and the days getting longer I can see the on set of summer not to far away. Living in the mountains does make the winters colder than the coast which perhaps enjoys a few more days clear of cloud and rain than we do.

I would like to write a particular thank you to Simon from Car Valeting services who did an excellent job cleaning the interior of my car. As most you are aware I have twin 7 year olds so you can only imagine what the back of my car looks like on an average day. This coupled with the fact a cheap plastic toy containing Ben 10 gunk melted onto the back seat which the children promptly smeared round the rest of the car! Simon had a real challenge to get this off especially when other valeting services hadn’t. Simon did in actual fact remove all stains and cleaned the whole interior to an excellent standard. The inside of the car looks as good as new now. So I will see how long that last before I have to call him again!! If you would like to get hold of Simon you can call him on Tel: 649 198 280 As usual inside this month there is a lot going on in your area, Day of Life, Panto meetings and still the usual live gigs at your favourite bar or restaurant

News in Spain MÁLAGA COURT STOPS WOMAN FEEDING THE BIRDS BY ORDERING HER OUT OF HER HOME She cannot return for 18 months and must pay the cost of cleaning the Pigeons in a city centre square in Barcelona. A woman who has for years ignored pleas from her neighbours to stop feeding the birds from her balcony and windows has been ordered out of her home by a court in Málaga and told to pay the 2,000 € of cleaning up the mess from the block’s facade. The court took into account that she had been putting out food for pigeons, seagulls and sparrows for the past 9 years and considered the practice as unhealthy and dangerous for her neighbours. She failed to stop even after administrative proceedings were opened against her by the City Hall in Málaga. The woman’s neighbours told the EFE news agency that it was very difficult to lead a normal life in the building, with the constant noise made by the birds, their mess, and the fear they caused as they flew in numbers near the block. Their neighbour will only be able to return to her home once 18 months have passed.

THE SPANISH ARE LOSING THE HABIT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN The benefits of the Mediterranean Diet are well known, but it seems that the habits of generations are being lost in Andalucía, where now one in three children is overweight or obese. It is, along with the Canaries, the Spanish region to suffer this public health problem the most, and the situation is not much better for adults either where 15% of andaluces are above their ideal weight, and where a growth in the numbers of 2% a year is being seen, according to the Integral Plan against Child Obesity from the Junta de Andalucía. Their latest studies show one of the main causes, children are not going out to play or take part in sports as before, with some of them

not taking even 1,000 steps a day. There is an economic element too, with children from poorer families more likely to suffer obesity. 70% of people in Andalucía don’t do any exercise after work, and many that do only do so on doctors’ orders, when the damage has already been done. As one specialist put it, ‘You see people running in the parks, but they are always the same people’. A gentle walk for an hour a day is calculated to result in a weight loss of 7.3 kilos at the end of the year FOREIGNERS OPEN PARTY HEADQUARTERS IN MOJÁCAR The new party will fight the local elections on May 22. British residents of Mojácar have opened the headquarters for a new political party with which they will fight the local elections in the Mojácar and Vera areas on May 22. The ‘Mojácar-Positiva-Se Mueve’ coalition, led by Jessica Simpson, has opened an office close to the Hotel Indalo, on Mojácar Playa, where they say all people from the town having a meeting place and somewhere to give their opinions. English was the dominant language at the event, but Jessica Simpson was keen to point out that the party ‘is not directed exclusively at foreign residents’, but she added that they were focussed on foreigners who make up nearly 70% of the population of Mojácar, including French, Romanians, Germans as well as the British. A FUNERAL HOME IN BENALMÁDENA, MÁLAGA, IS HOLDING A RATHER STRANGE RAFFLE; THE PRIZE IS A FREE FUNERAL. What’s more the winner does not have to use the prize for his or her own funeral, they can transfer it to whomever they want. The funeral home has already sold some 500 tickets. The only requirement is that you have to be over 55 to enter. The prize has a value of 2,700 €. Source: www.typicallyspanish.com

T Malaga Cathedral

he Cathedral of Málaga was constructed between 1528 and 1782, following the plans by Diego de Siloe. The interior of the cathedral is also in Renaissance style. The cathedral has a rectangular plan and is composed of a nave and two aisles. The set of chairs in the choir is the work of Pedro de Mena. The facade is baroque style and it is divided into two floors, on the first floor there are three arcs and inside of these there are doors separated by marble columns. Over the doors there are some medallions. Those over the laterals doors represent the patron saints of Málaga, St Ciriaco and St. Paula, while the one in the center represents the announcement of God. The north tower is 84 metres in height and it is the second-highest cathedral in Andalusia, behind the Giralda of Seville. The south tower is unfinished and there are some claims that the funds were used instead to aid the British colonies gain independence from Great Britain, while other investigations have led to the fact the money may have been used in the preparation of the “Way of Antequera”. The unfinished Cathedral has the nickname of “La Manquita”, meaning in English, "The One-Armed Lady"! There are a series of artworks inside which fill the temple, among them is the gothic altarpiece of the Chapel of Santa Barbara and the 16th century tombs of the Chapel of San Francisco. The Chapel of Incarnation shows a neoclassic altarpiece of 1785, work of Juan de Villanueva and carved by Antonio Ramos and Aldehuela. At the moment La Junta de Andalucia is executing the reform of the Cathedral because of the leaks and dampness which have appeared in the last few years. Trip Adviser reviews: “This cathedral is just as beautiful as some I have visited in Italy. It is ornate, has stunning stained glass & out side some very modern pieces of sculpture to be enjoyed.” “I would have loved to have heard the organ because it was so beautiful, the music must be magical.” “ Across from the cathedral there is a square in front of the bishop's house...many cafes to enjoy a coffee & really look at the external architecture of the cathedral.”

A Nice Hotel

After booking our holiday to stay at an ice hotel in Romania, people we told either asked why would want to do that or replied “yes, I stayed in a nice hotel recently”. After pointing out they had misheard me, they would ask “why do you want to do that?”. As we trudged through the deep, crisp and indeed, even snow enjoying a temperature of -17°C I was beginning to ask myself the same thing.

The answer is, my wife and I created a list of 50 things to do before we are 50. Staying in an ice hotel sits just between 'do a jigsaw puzzle together' and 'kidnap somebody and demand a ransom' and feeling like we deserved a break the hotel won out.

T

o be honest, the reason that we chose Romania was due to monetary reasons; the ice hotels in Scandinavia were expensive and the planned hotel in Russia we had seen on the internet seems to have not been made (or maybe it melted) but as it turned out we loved Romania so our holiday turned out to be fantastic and by far exceed our expectations. Our trip to Romania was at the beginning of January and we flew from Luton Airport (my favourite place) into Bucharest. Whilst in the UK we tried to buy a Romanian guide book from the various book retailers. Our fairly fruitless search ended in WH Smiths where we made our Hobson's choice purchase. The spotty youth behind the counter picked up the book, scanned it, then turned to an equally spotty colleague and laughed “Ha, they're going to Romania” Puzzled I asked him “What's funny, have you been to Romania?” He looked at me and without missing a beat replied “Nah mate, I've never been abroad before”. As I turned away I wondered if I had just met the next Alan Whicker. Then I checked to see if he had given me the correct change.

Worryingly, our new guide book, last updated in 2008 had no mention of an ice hotel in Romania, or indeed its location, Balea Lake. That said it did have some very nice pictures in and details of the food we would find there. Not a total waste of money then! We were picked up from our hotel and driven to the ice hotel by a very friendly man called Radu who was 27 and had been learning English since he was 7. After a while we began to see signs for Balea Lake which at that point had clearly not been found by our Insight Guide: Romania ironically published by the Discovery Channel. Between the months of November and June the only way up to Balea Lake is by cable car. Once in the cable car we could just about make out the sweeping curves of the Transfãgãrãþan road. Even covered in snow I could see why the road attracts cyclists hikers and car enthusiasts (including the Top Gear team who filmed an episode of the show in which Jeremy and the boys drove down the road in supercars, they went on to describe it as the best road in the world). The cable car journey was stunning. As we passed over snow covered pine trees it was impossible not to think of Christmas cards and James Bond films. We arrived at the cable car station and as we exited were able to see the back of the ice hotel. Straight away we went and had a look at where we would be spending the night at which point we were informed that we were the only people staying that night and so could have a choice of any of the hotel's 8 rooms. The hotel consisted of a huge room at the end of which was a bar with the words 'Ice Hotel' carved into the back wall. The ice had coloured fairy lights set into the snow and various neon signs to light the rooms. Jutting off of either side of the room were 8 rooms like a church with multiple transepts running off of a nave. Each room was different and has an architect's drawing attached to the wall of the room to show its original design. We chose our room, which had a huge pile of ice balls of varying sizes arranged around the bed. Having chosen our room we walked to the lodge where the owners of the ice hotel had a restaurant and offered ice skating or snow mobile hire. We had lunch in the warm and cosy lodge, a traditional lunch of soup served with sour cream and a bottle of warm beer - they should have just popped a crate outside as the fridge it was in was obviously not working - and then went back outside to explore. There was a biting wind which made the -10°C of the daytime seem even colder. Even though we were well prepared wearing many layers and having hats and gloves on it was freezing and we soon went back into the lodge to defrost. We spent a lazy afternoon and early evening reading and relaxing by the wood burning stove prior to venturing out to the ice

hotel to eat the optional ice hotel meal we had decided to have. This meal was served to us at our ice table which functioned perfectly well except for when our glasses occasionally almost slid off the edge. We sat on ice stools which were thankfully covered with furry cushions and the first course was even served on an ice plate. The food was great and we washed it down with a freezing cold bottle of Romanian Cabernet Sauvignon. After more than an hour as the last of six courses was served I decided I could not take it any more. My feet were freezing (despite having 4 pairs of socks on) and I could feel the cold spreading to the trunk of my body. So we trudged back through the snow clutching our plate of cheese and our wine which had now gone beyond cold to slushy, and finished it off in the lodge. We sat with our gloves on our feet, and our feet pressed against a central heating radiator and once again began to thaw out. The owner of the lodge, a very friendly German lady was very concerned; they had never had a pair of guests that did not like the cold, i.e. that were wimps, she pointed out the staff bedrooms to us and told us to throw snowballs at the windows if we got too cold in the night & they would let us in. On our return to the lodge we were asked if we had any idea what time we would be going to bed as they would warm our sleeping bags for us. This was music to my ears and the thought of going back out to the hotel did not seem so bad. We settled down to an evening chatting about Romania and the hotel when I noticed a photograph of a wooden lodge situated on a small peninsula surrounded by water. “Where is that?” I enquired. Radu laughed, “that is here in the summer”. Suddenly I realised that when we were walking around by the lodge and to and from the hotel we had been walking on the frozen, snow covered lake. At around 9pm there was a bit of a kerfuffle going on. Some Russian tourists had seen the signs for the ice hotel on the road near to the bottom of the cable car station. An employee of the hotel had tried to explain to them in his best English that the cable car had closed some four hours earlier and would not be open again until 9am the following morning. Radu was enlisted to try and put of

them off until the next day but seemingly they were adamant they wanted to come that night. The owner clearly saw that the only chance of getting them into the hotel (and earning more money) was to agree to letting them come up in the cable car. This meant that a manned car would have to go down to de-ice the cable, then he would have to come back up and allow another manned car to go down and pick up the Russian couple. The cost was never quite explained to us but our driver was clearly disgusted by the attitude of the Russians and their disinterest in the costs they would have to pay. When they finally arrived in the lodge they received a somewhat frosty reception from the lodge owners, me, my wife and (our new best friends) all the lodge employees now eating and relaxing by the wood burner. The Russians sat down and proceeded to eat their own packed supper before going to bed and being able to see the hotel and its wonderful surroundings. Oh well the customer is always right.

unsurprisingly made out of ice. On the block of ice there is a wooden base covered with blankets, then the sleeping bags, more blankets and a layer of animal skins. Add into the equation the fact that we were fully clothed (except for our boots) including hats then realistically there is no way you are going to be cold. My wife asked we needed to set the alarm as we had a fairly early start the next day, we decided to set it even though we had heard stories of people not sleeping due to breathing in the cold air. Before I knew it I had nodded off. All was OK until around 5am when I awoke bursting for a wee (it must have been the warm beer and freezing wine) after about 10 minutes I managed to free myself from the layers of blankets and very tight sleeping bag (it must have been the 6 course meal) and then to put on my boots taking extra care not to get my socks wet on the ice. The toilet and shower block was about 100 yards away in the cable car house. Walking to the toilet was quite disconcerting, I have seen too many horror films like the Shining etc the only sound was the howling wind. The toilets were nice and warm and I did consider for a moment curling up on the floor and going asleep there. I did not however and went back to the ice hotel and took another 10 minutes squeezing back into my bed. Once again I dropped off to sleep straight away and was awoken by the robotic voice of my mobile phone alarm I had set some 8 hours earlier.

Then it was time for bed. Now, I once read an article about men who pay women to whip them and walk on them in high heeled shoes; I should imagine the look on the face of a woman just as she is about to begin whipping her foolish punter was probably the look that the owner of the ice hotel had on her face as we left the warm lodge to go to bed. The bed in the ice hotel is unsurprisingly made out of ice. On the block of

After breakfast it was back on the cable car again and back to unfrozen hotels in the rest of Romania. The company we used to arrange our trip to the ice hotel described it in their literature as a 'once in a lifetime experience'. I know what they mean, I would totally recommend it to anybody but I'm glad that it's ticked off the list and don't feel the need to do it again. Right, anyone fancy a freezing cold glass of red wine?

Processionary Caterpillars

A

dangerous insect comes down from the trees during the next months so you need to be prepared. When you take the dogs for a walk, you can see them hanging from the pine trees as big, white nests: the pine processionary caterpillar. Their official name is Thaumetopoea pityocampa and they live in the pine trees on the Mediterranean Coast. During the summer the moths come up from the ground, they mate, and the females lay their eggs in the top of the pine trees. 30 – 40 days after this, around September – October, the caterpillars appear and start building their nests in the trees. Each nest contains between 60 – 200 bugs. They leave the nests at night, feeding on different parts of the tree, but don´t leave their host-tree until February onto April. This is when the caterpillars come out of their nests, and climb down to the ground in a long line, hence the name Processionary. When they´ve found an adequate place they bury themselves and form the cocoon, until next summer when a new cycle starts. In nature, the caterpillar-state is the most vulnerable in the life of an insect, why they tend to evolve all kind of defence-mecanisms. The Processionary caterpillar has acquired a layer of hairy-fine needles, which contain a toxic substance released if the needles are broken off. The toxine has got an extremely strong effect. Iit releases histamin into the body of the victim, where there has been contact with skin or

mucosas. In humans this causes a violent allergic reaction, seen as a very itchy rash. In dogs it is a much bigger danger. Dogs tend to lick the areas where the caterpillars have passed, or even chew on them, or play with the nests. Cats seldom get problems, as they are much more cautious. Dogs that have been in contact with a caterpillar, get symptoms very quickly: they run around, desperately scratching themselves in the mouth and on the tongue, dribble and foam from the mouth, and rapidly there is a visible swelling of the tongue lips and even the whole head. Before rushing to the vets, there are a few things that can be done as first aid. Wash the dog´s mouth out with water, with a hose, no scrubbing! A bit of vinegar dissolved in lukewarm water can help to neutralise the toxin. After this basic help, it is important to get to the vets as quick as possible, as the dog will need cortisone treatment, antibiotics and lots of intravenous fliuds. The lucky dogs “only” loose a bit of the tongue, but if the dog is severely ill, we sometimes have to put them down as the whole tongue nectrotizes, or the palate or larynx is involved. It is extremely important to treat as soon as possible, as the succes rate of the treatment drops with time. So keep an eye on the pine trees during springtime!!! Gunila Naturvets

Smoke-free? It's a Spanish imposition! Martin Samuel (Mail onlIne)

S

o we've lost Spain now. The last bastion of tobacco-puffing freedom gone. As the clock turned midnight on January 2 — the first day of 2011 was given over to an amnesty, when we imagine smokers gathered over a consoling sherry and a plate of jamon to enjoy the last moments in misty melancholy — Spain introduced the toughest anti-smoking laws in Europe. By 2012 all EU member countries will have as good as banned public smoking, but Spain's conversion is particularly spectacular. Smoking in enclosed public places is now prohibited and alfresco smoking is banned in open-air children's playgrounds, even those in parks, and at access points to schools and hospitals. Smoking was banned in the workplace in 2006 and now private smoking clubs will not be allowed to serve food, drink, cigarettes, or admit children. As a nonsmoker I should be pleased. Spain is one of the few places where a meal out is still invaded by a wafting grey cloud from an adjacent table. And it really isn't pleasant, despite the strongest individual instinct to live and let live. So why does it feel as if some of Spain's magic has been surrendered by its reinvention as a smoke-free

zone, that by conforming to EU decrees, Spain has given up a piece of its soul, lost some of its beating, albeit rather diseased, heart? Barcelona recently banned bullfighting, starting in January 2012, and while the region of Catalonia has a reputation for being progressive, that does not seem right, either. A petition of 180,000 signatures was brought to parliament which, in a region of 6.16 million inhabitants, is not much. The Spanish were not like us, with our endless red tape and rules and regulations. On my first visit I noticed motorway service stations sold hard porn and harder liquor openly behind the counter. It was clear the Spanish had a certain attitude to life! No doubt rules existed for those who wanted to hit the autopista with one hand on the tequila bottle, but if you wanted to fall foul of them, that was your lookout. As a driver, you were at least treated like a grown-up and given responsibility. Your passengers, meanwhile, had more to do than just play Red SEAT, Yellow SEAT. On returning to our villa during one holiday, we turned on the television to be confronted by what looked like a blank screen. Slowly, a room emerged, and excited voices could be heard, but

the entire scene was shrouded in fog. It took an age for the air to clear, affording odd glimpses of young folk gathered on sofas, jabbering away and smoking like lunatics. It turned out to be Spain's equivalent of Big Brother — Gran Hermano — in which one presumes the winner is the last to be left alive after the rest of the house succumbs to emphysema. For this, and the fact that some of the most popular programmes are known as telebasura — which, literally, translates as 'telly-rubbish' — I have always had a soft spot for Spanish TV. And for Spanish attitudes to smoking, which seemed so much healthier than our own. Whenever I see those sad huddles of people in nasty-looking Perspex shelters outside offices, clinging together against the cold and hastily sucking in those toxins in whatever sliver of time the boss allows, I always think: why don't they just ban it? If smoking is so terribly bad for you — and, plainly, it is — if it is to be made such an antisocial, humiliating, fun-sapping experience, why the hypocrisy of the government still leeching taxes from these unfortunate souls? Why prey on their weakness or their addiction? Don't send

them into the rain as pariahs and still demand almost £5 duty on a £6 packet of cigarettes. Get rid of the weed altogether. It is not our nature to ban, but it shouldn't be in our nature to pick 83 per cent from people's pockets either. Save smokers from themselves or show them a little tolerance. Stop pretending your taxes care. It is the measures intended to discourage smoking that are the great lie. Successive governments would never issue a blanket ban, because this would be a massively unpopular measure with one quarter of the population still lighting up, and they need the revenue. So they bully and isolate smokers instead, while pretending it is for their own good. There couldn't be any smoking-related illnesses if nobody smoked; but enforcing that law would also require a degree of sincerity that is absent from public office. They'll be coming for porn and liquor next, you watch, and then the poor old Spaniards will have absolutely nothing to do on motorways!

One Voice – Spring Concert

W

eing part of the 'One Voice' singing group is great fun for me, not only because making music always has been an important part of my life but I have to admit that being with such a lovely bunch of people is a pleasurable way to spend an afternoon. Even though we do get through a tremendous amount of work learning our songs, the rehearsals are by no means tedious or boring, because we have a joke and a laugh. I often say that putting on a concert is not the aim of the group. We do try to reach as good a standard as possible, but our priority is meeting together and enjoying singing.

ANT to know a secret? Well if you do you'd better get along to Cómpeta - because the truth is out there! Is it going to involve dwarves, will there be a wicked queen with poisoned fruit, or an axe wielding giant and a boy with magic seeds, or even a fluffy bird laying a golden egg? Yes, you guessed - it's Panto time. And even now CAMPO members are locked away in a darkened room trying to decide which Panto to perform this June to the discerning residents of Cómpeta and beyond. One thing we can promise at this point is the performance will be quite unique, of course a little risqué but without doubt, hilarious. Director Tom Sobel says “this year is going to be bigger and better and we can't wait to let everyone know what we have chosen to perform. We are also keen to welcome new members in to the group but be prepared to be pushed to the limits” he added. So with much ballyhoo, the unveiling of the script will take place on Friday, March 11th 8pm at the Hotel Balcon. The cast and crew from last year's Cinderella will be there to answer any questions and allay any fears you may have about becoming the next Dandini or Baroness Hardup or, you may just want to find out how many kilometres you will have to walk to be the Drinks Runner! Tom and the team invite you to join us that evening to share the secret plus also hear about other exciting events CAMPO are supporting over the coming months such as Day for Life May 15th and VivoAid in July. For further information call Debi 626 192 117 or email debi.bond@gmail.com Tom 689 704 378 or email tom@tomsobel.com

B

Arranging a concert can have its problems. When setting a concert date, the most important factor to be considered is whether or not all of the members are available. In this respect being the front man for 'One Voice' is comparable to running a small low division football club. A club such as Manchester United can have an average attendance of 75,000, which means they can afford three or four players in each of the eleven positions. When one player is missing, another steps in. On the other hand poor old Hartlepool with a ground capacity of 5,000 and an average attendance of 3,400 can only afford two players in each position if they are lucky. 'What has this got to do with choirs?' I hear you ask. A large choir with say eight voices in each of the four sections can still perform with a couple of members away. 'One Voice' has four sopranos, four altos, three tenors and three basses. It is therefore important to find a date when all are available as the balance of the team is upset when singers are missing. Well, this is just a roundabout way of letting you know that we have found a date for our next concert. 'One Voice' will be presenting a varied programme in the Salon de Actos, Competa Town Hall on Friday the first of April at 8pm. Items will include 'Lady of Spain', 'Guantanamera', a selection of Elvis songs, as well as music by Wagner, Verdi, Shostakovitch, Rodrigos, Queen and ABBA. It would be lovely to see you all, so do come along and support us. Entry is free with a retiring collection. Money raised will be given to Caritas. Tom Robinson.

Carnival in Cadiz C

adiz is an ancient, seafaring City on the Atlantic (along the Andalusian Coast) which means it enjoys a nice regular cooling breeze running across itself. Traditionally, its date of establishment is about 1100 BC. Cadiz is quiet and serene, except when it plays host to Spain's ultimate party: Carnaval de Cรกdiz, with its choruses, fancy-dress/costume processions, jokes, disguises and float parade. Cadiz is famous for the sense of humour of its citizens and the age-old Carnival where authority, politicians, celebrities and the church are parodied and ridiculed with unparalleled skill and wit in comic song. The central figures here are the choirs, or agrupaciones, which are groups of between three and forty singers. The Falla's Contest is a Music festival held in the Gran Teatro Falla before Carnival itself and, to a certain extent, it is a relatively serious competition as the show is televised across Spain. Competition is keen, and contestants spend months in preparation. The most popular type of group is the chirigotas, choirs normally of ten unison or close-harmony singers, accompanied by bombo, caja (drum, box - used as a percussion instrument) and guitar. Their repertoire is the most satirical of the different types of groups and the literary quality of the songs can be very high (they may be written by local authors). Only a few musical forms such as the tango or pasodoble are used, so that everyone knows the tune and can concentrate on the words. As the story goes, the Carnaval fun began in the 17th century when the city tried to outdo the opulent carnival celebrations of Venice. The crews of the great Spanish port on the Atlantic spread their Carnaval song afar, most notably to Tenerife, which has similar competitions for their world-famous Carnaval. The galleons returned from the New World with not only gold and silver, but with even more powerful treasure: the rhythms and musical influences that still dominate today's Carnival. African and Creole rhythms, sambas and rustic Colombian tunes all intermingle in the streets with local Andalusian songs and traditional flamenco music. During the country's civil war in the 1930s, Gen. Francisco Franco banned Carnival in certain areas because of its anti-authority theme. In 1937, he abolished it entirely when fear of revolt was greatest. In Cรกdiz, however, the party never stopped. Today, the town of 160,000 people begins planning six months in advance for the parades and the singing showdowns at the theater. While many Carnivals end the day before the beginning of Lent, the party goes on several more days in Cรกdiz. Parades are held on the Sundays before and after Ash Wednesday.

Spring Forward, Fall Back

A

s we reach the month of March, it's a time I like because, if for nothing else, we put the clocks forward again and it's the start of lighter nights, longer days and the run into summer. The only thing I don't like is one hour less in bed. (“Why don´t you just get up later?”) Why didn't I think of that, especially as I can add the extra hour onto the end of my day, now they're lighter. So here's the history bit. Modern day Daylight Saving Time, or DST, was introduced in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson. “Who?”, I hear you cry? A New Zealander born in London (doesn't that make him a Brit who emigrated?) who was an entomologist; that's someone who studies insects, to you and me. OK, just me then. He also studied astronomy; that's the study of…….oh, come on you know that one. Because

42

The Grapevine

he worked shifts in the Post Office, he valued his after-hours daylight time, which he spent collecting insects. As a consequence he submitted a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two hour daylight-saving shift, which eventually became the one hour shift we now observe. So there we have it, just because some guy living the other side of the world wanted to collect creepycrawlies we have to go through the twice yearly rigmarole of trying to remember whether to put the clocks forward or back. Cheers, mate! DST is not observed by all countries, in fact most of those that do adhere to it tend to be high latitude Northern Hemisphere countries. Surprise, surprise, one exception is New Zealand and south-eastern Australia. Countries around the equator tend not to observe DST, as it would make little or no difference to their

sunlight hours. As I've referred to it, the official term is Daylight Saving Time but the UK tends to refer to it as “British Summer Time”, but this could be more of a hopeful term than for any other reason . So what are the benefits of DST, apart from collecting spiders, beetles and wasps? One of the benefits is that it gives after-work daylight time to persue evening activities such as outdoor sports and recreation thus creating a more healthy nation. It also saves energy as lights are not used so much in the evening and it cuts pedestrian accidents by 5%. It is more safe to cross the road during this time than any other. Health benefits include more vitamin D as we are exposed to more sunlight but it's not all good. Some studies have shown that after changing the clocks, the disruption to our body rhythms leads to more heart attacks. Personally, I reckon it's down to the stress of having to change every clock and timing device in and around the house. Digital clocks are not the easiest thing to change at the best of times and to think you've got the microwave clock, oven clock, video (ask your 5 year old son or grandson about that one) not to mention the alarm clock, which will get you up the next day. Retailers like DST as people are out and about more, inevitably shopping, as do golf clubs as members rush home from work to get a quick round in before dusk. Although you lose that extra hour in bed during the early hours of Sunday morning, for those still working you can get it back Monday morning by having an extra hour in bed and telling your employer you forgot to put your alarm clock forward. How many times have you tried that one? Strangely enough, come October how many employees turn up for work an hour early having forgot to put their alarm clock back? When we put the clocks forward, we effectively lose 02:00:00am as clocks jump from 01:59:59 straight to 03:00:00. Where does that second go? We don't even get it back in October as clocks jump from 01:59:59 back to 01:00:00. Personally, I have no problem with the clocks going back as they do in October because we get

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

an extra hour in bed and the worst that can happen is we turn up early for our flight, at the office or Sunday mass. It can be embarrassing but not serious. Conversely, the opposite happens in March as we put the clocks forward, which can be more inconvenient and we lose that important hour in bed. But I have a plan. Setting clocks back is easy; setting them forward is difficult so let's keep the October clock change as it is. However, in March why don't we set our clocks twenty-three hours backwards instead of one hour forward. Stay with me on this one. Think of all the advantages. We will not lose an hour of sleep; we will gain almost a day of rest and it will be Saturday all over again. You will never again miss that flight, be late for work or have to say a few “Hail Marys” for missing Church. Of course there is a downside to this with regards to our calendar; it would fall behind by one day every year. However, I've thought of that one as well; the second part of my DST plan deals with this. Instead of adding a day every four years, as we do with Leap Years, why don't we do away with Leap Years and subtract three days every four years. More than that, let these be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, which according to many polls are the least popular days. This could all be done in the month of February, which seems reasonable considering what a miserable month this can be. I can see only advantages with this idea. So with the Mayoral elections coming up, maybe we could start to persuade our leaders to take this up in the European Parliament on our behalf. I think it would be a vote winner; it would get my vote. Well it would, I thought of it. After all, when a wise old Indian man (India don't observe DST, by the way) was told about DST he said, “Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it on the bottom and have a longer blanket.” Wise words indeed. Weird and Wonderful from around the world!

T

wo of Malawi's most senior judicial officials are arguing over whether a new bill includes a provision that outlaws breaking wind in public. Justice Minister George Chaponda says the new bill would criminalise flatulence to promote "public decency". "Just go to the toilet when you feel like farting," he told local radio. However, he was directly contradicted by Solicitor General Anthony Kamanga, who says the reference to "fouling the air" means pollution. "How any reasonable or sensible person can construe the provision to criminalising farting in public is beyond me," he said, adding that the prohibition contained in the new law has been in place since 1929. The Local Courts Bill, to be introduced next week reads: "Any person who vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the public to the health of persons in general dwelling or carrying on business in the neighbourhood or passing along a public way shall be guilty of a misdemeanour." Mr Chaponda, a trained lawyer, insists that this includes farting. "Would you be happy to see people farting anyhow?" he asked on the popular "Straight Talk" programme on Malawi's Capital Radio. He said that local chiefs would deal with any offenders. When asked whether it could be enforced, he said it would be similar to laws banning urinating in public.

Belgian runner has set a new world record by completing 365 marathon races in a year. Stefaan Engels,

dubbed "Marathon Man", began his challenge in Belgium a year ago and has since run a marathon every day across seven countries. He crossed the finish line in the Spanish city of Barcelona after running 15,000km (9,569 miles) in a year. "I don't regard my marathon year as torture. It is more like a regular job," the 49-year-old said. He averaged about four hours to complete a marathon. He said his best time was 2 hours and 56 minutes. Engels suffered from asthma as a child and had been told by doctors to avoid sport. Before Engels, the record marathon man was Akinori Kusuda of Japan - who ran 52 races in a row at the age of 65 in 2009.

China Central Television story about the country's air force showed an explosion that was identical to a scene from the 1986 film Top Gun.The broadcaster often uses film clips in its news reports. The disputed scene was aired on CCTV's main news bulletin on 23 January. It was in a report about a training exercise undertaken by the People's Liberation Army's air force. There were interviews with senior military figures. Over pictures of fighter jets in action, the reporter told viewers that this was a live-fire exercise and all targets had been hit. One scene showed a pilot firing a missile. A plane was then hit before exploding into flames. But some keeneyed observers posted comments on the internet claiming that the scene was identical to one in Top Gun, starring Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.

Get Hedging! O

ne of the best windbreaks is hedging, far more effective than a wall, which can often set up turbulence. It's softer, more natural and beloved by wildlife. It's also much cheaper than a wall and now is an ideal planting time. Don't use hedging only for delineating boundaries. It's a great screener; hiding rather utilitarian or unsightly parts of your garden and 'greening out' neighbouring properties; it looks great meandering along a pathway; it can define areas and create secret 'rooms' within your garden so that not everything is open to the eye immediately. There are several considerations and decisions to be made – size matters and whether you need evergreen or deciduous! Consider also whether you want a formal, compact look or something more relaxed. Most of you will already know the most common plantings here – myoporum or transparante, nerium oleander and lantana camara so let's look at something different – and there are many! For really dense hedging, many like the Italian cypresses or cupressus sempervirens. It can be topped out, at any height, and will then thicken; it is very resistant to cold winds and drought, though it can look a little somber. To counter this, try growing a brilliantly coloured climber through it or the starry white flowers of a jasmine look delightful and give you perfume too. We have two large cypress planted at the foot of our steps and they are like skyscraper hotels for the sparrows! The purple-leafed hop bush, dodonea viscosa 'purpurea' is very attractive with its purple/bronze foliage, pinkish bracts and seed capsules. It can get large but doesn't mind being pruned hard and is really tough and drought and wind resistant. If you need prickly partners, use either pyracantha coccinea, the fire-thorn, (3m to 4m) or berberis vulgaris, the barberry shrub, to 2m. Both bear striking plump berries during the winter months – beloved by birds - and are exceptionally tough and drought resistant plants, which will rapidly form an impenetrable barrier. They'll

50

form tangled mounds or can be pruned into formal hedges. The fire-thorn is evergreen whilst the barberry turns lovely autumnal colours before shedding its leaves. It's mildly poisonous, though also used medicinally. Both plants are scented, though it's not particularly appealing! Another prickly option, though less so, is duranta repens, the Brazilian sky flower - one of my favourite hedging plants. It makes a very elegant arching shrub, natural looking, and bears extremely pretty racemes of white, sky blue or violet flowers which are followed by strings of golden berries. Semi-evergreen, it can reach over 2m if left un-pruned. For baking and dry, look to teucrium fruticans, or germander. It has grey, downy foliage with pale denim coloured flowers – a colour scheme that contrasts gently with the fiery colours and purples. It's often clipped formally but I prefer it when left to billow and flow, reaching, perhaps, 2m tall. It makes a good alternative to the moreusual lavender. Another real toughie is pistacea lentiscus, or mastic bush, related to the edible pistachio nut bush. A native plant, it is indifferent to heat, drought, winds - dry or salty - and will take several degrees of freezing too. It is fairly slow growing but forms a dense, trouble-free hedge and you can 'bleed' it for the mastic and make your own chewing gum! I've also seen ceratonia siliqua, or algarrobo, used as an unusual hedge, tough as can be - if rather slow. With our wealth of sunny days, scented plants give extra magic and nothing could be better than an aromatic hedge. Perfume not only attracts us, but draws in buzzing bees too, lazily droning on warm days. Whilst they're working away pollinating fruit trees etc. we can doze in a hammock wafting in a peaceful and scented world. Escallonia is scented in flower and leaf and is not so commonly seen here but it's very pretty and is particularly good in seaside positions where it stands up well to salty winds. Evergreen with dark, neat, shiny leaves and, generally, pink flowers it will grow to around 2m tall and needs less pruning than most. Carissa macrocarpa, the natal plum, is evergreen and to 2m. It forms a very spiny bush – useful to deter access – with shiny green leaves, waxy white, jasmine-like flowers and red edible plum-

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

like fruits. It's a good all-rounder – pretty and useful too. Look out too for the spiny rosa rugosa, a really strong hedging rose with bright green pleated leaves and single or double flowers in white or carmine pink. It's extremely prickly and bears big fat rose hips. If you like your roses to look natural, this is the one for you! There are two shrubs which are fabulously perfumed and will make lovely hedges – murraya exotica or m. paniculata and choisya ternata. Their common names are evocative: orange jasmine and Mexican orange blossom. Both are glossy leaved, evergreen and with white flowers bearing that fabulous perfume. They won't be the cheapest, but for a special situation, do give them a thought. If you think that hedging is only utilitarian, these are pure romance! Myrtus comunis, or myrtle, can be used much as box hedging. Trim it for formal settings, or let it grow a little more loosely and it will then develop very pretty, sweetly-scented, creamy white flowers with prominent stamens. Becoming very drought resistant with age, it's a part of traditional Spanish gardens. And, finally, for neat good looks try either viburnum tinus or pittosporum tobira. Both have deep green, glossy leaves and white scented flowers in springtime. V. tinus is commonly known, in Spanish, as durillo – the little tough one – and this describes it perfectly. It will grow in almost any aspect (though give it some sun for perfume) even dry and dusty and still look good. The pittosporum is its counterpart. Get hedging! Medical Thermography J

anet Van Dam has seen both her mother and her younger sister fall prey to breast cancer. Thinking about how she could help other women from getting the disease, she has set up a practise to detect potential tumours before they've had the chance to grow. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and died within eighteen months, at the age of 51. Then, in 2008 malignant tumours were found in her sister's breasts. “Those two special women gave me the idea to bring something new to the Axarquia region of Spain, which will benefit many people,” said Janet. “In my new practice I'm offering Medical Thermography and Nutritional Coaching. Changing your eating habits will help to improve your health if a thermal examination indicates a change in diet is advisable.” Medical thermography (or Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) is carried out by a special camera that can see differences in body temperature, indicating changes in muscle tissue, arteries, veins and bone structure. In a healthy body, the temperature pattern is more or less symmetrical. If an unsymmetrical pattern shows up, it's worth investigating further. The screening can pick up on any alterations in the breasts at a very early stage before a cyst or tumour has even developed. This is the key to a good outcome.

! It can be used for women of any age, breast densitiy is not important. ! It can see a larger area of the breasts and around than a mammogram. ! The Meditherm system I work with is top of the range, reliable and it has been used for many years with good results. The price for a breast screening is 120 Euro. If it's your first screening a follow up is needed after three months. After that it's advisable yearly. The price for two scans is €205. Janet is available for appointments at Centro Mar y Salud, El Morche Tel: 952 532 065 / 617 913 196 for Thermography or Nutritional Coaching Tue from 11-5pm and Wed from 2 – 5pm and Fridays from her home in Sayalonga 618 989 125.

Breast & Body Screening Medical Thermography Janet van Dam 618 989 125 Non Invasive

Here are some important points about Thermography: ! It was registered as a Class 1 Medical Device in the EEC 2007/47/EC and complies with all EEC regulations. ! It is the only real tool we have to detect early changes. A mammogram unfortunately can only see the actual tumour once it's there and the size of a large pea. !There is no radiation involved, which is dangerous for you or for the technician. Did you know that the chances of getting breast cancer increase by one per cent each time you have a mammogram? ! There's no pain, as your breasts are not squashed in a machine ! Non-invasive. You do not need to be touched

T

he Grapevine Magazine has now added another service to our portfolio. In addition to offering magazine, website advertising and our printing services we can now offer a website design and hosting package. This service is provided in house and as a result we can provide cost effective and professional websites and affordable annual hosting fees. Grapevine Website Packages To operate a website you need to buy a domain name, renew this annually, have a website designed, set up email accounts and forwarders and then host the website – this is effectively renting space for your website so people can access it through the internet. Sound complicated? Never fear we can do all this for you. To launch this new service we are offering our basic website package for an amazing 250 euro (IVA not incl.). This includes buying your domain name and hosting the website for a year. After the first year there is a nominal annual hosting fee of 100 euro (IVA not incl.). This is a fantastic offer, for a user friendly, fast, cost effective, accessible website which will represent your business, property or idea on the web in the best professional way. Importantly you own the website and all the files used to build it giving you security over your investment, if you are not happy with us you can simply move your site to another provider or host. Our websites also offer you the ability to log in and simply make changes to your website. This will mean you do not have to pay a

We have built a couple of example websites in order to show the extent of our capabilities. www.competavilla.info to see an example on how one of our sites could market your property for either rental purposes or, if you are selling a property you might like this type of website for extra marketing to increase your selling chances. www.bartapas.es demonstrates how one of our websites can be used to give your business a professional internet presence.

An introduction to Spanish basic ingredients Olive oil, olives, garlic, tomatoes and a few others are all you need to whip up a delicious Spanish meal .

S

panish food is low in fat, colourful, delicious and adaptable. It's also very easy to cook, as most Spanish recipes rely on good quality ingredients, cooked simply to bring out the natural flavours in the food. The Spanish don't smother their food in sauces – they have complete confidence that the ingredients will speak for themselves. Vegetables in Spain are harvested when they are ready for eating. They don't ship half-ripe vegetables around the world to sit on supermarket shelves for weeks on end; the Spanish have more respect for what goes into their stomachs. Everything you buy in Spain is ready to use, and this makes such a difference to the flavour of the end product. If you're not sure where to start, here's my checklist of indispensible ingredients and how to use them. Olive Oil This is the most important ingredient in your Spanish kitchen, and it has so many uses. You'll see a bewildering array of oils in Spanish supermarkets, but the choice is simple.

62

The Grapevine

Go for extra virgin first cold pressing, and select oil with a nice dark green colour. You don't need to spend a fortune on your oil, but don't bother with anything other than extra virgin, as you may be disappointed with the results. Oil is used for cooking, marinades and salad dressings, and if the Spanish want to put anything on their bread, they'll opt for olive oil rather than butter. Olives Another Spanish 'must have' - you can buy them in jars and tins in the supermarket, or loose on market stalls. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be stuffed with peppers, anchovies, garlic and almonds, among other things. Use olives in salads and place dishes of various olives out for tapas when you have guests. Olives are also used in recipes for chicken and fish. If you're cooking with olives, rinse them in water first to ensure they're not too salty for your purposes Tomatoes Like olives, the tomatoes in Spain come in all shapes and sizes. There are beef tomatoes, vine

tomatoes, plum tomatoes and cherry plum tomatoes, which are delicious halved in salads or threaded on cocktail sticks with olives and chunks of yellow pepper as an instant tapa. Many Spanish recipes call for tomatoes, and the Spanish have a unique way of preparing them which brings out their flavour and ensures you don't spend ages fishing tomato skins out of your culinary masterpiece. Grate rather than chop your tomatoes before adding to soups, stews and other recipes. It's quicker, easier and safer than chopping, and helps to thicken sauces and soups without the need for corn flour.

For a quick, easy Spanish breakfast, toast a baguette, drizzle over olive oil, spread with grated tomato and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Delicious! Tomato Frito Don't look for tubes of tomato puree in Spain – you won't find it. Buy tomato frito in tins or jars, and store in the fridge for up to a week after opening. Many recipes call for this, but it also makes a delicious snack spread on toast, topped with fried or poached mushrooms and seasoned with black pepper and ground chilli flakes. For those days when you want a change from Spanish food, tomato frito makes a great pizza topping, or use it for the basis for a pasta sauce. Peppers Red, green and yellow – make sure you always have some available while cooking a Spanish meal. For a different, more intense flavour, roast the peppers in a hot oven for about half an hour before use. Or halve the pepper lengthwise, remove the seeds, stalks and ribs and toss in olive oil. Season and roast until pepper is soft and edges are slightly charred but not burned black. Great in a red pepper soup or Gazpacho. Lemons Hold some back from the gin and tonic, because lemons make a great accompaniment to fish and

chicken. Marinade a fresh or frozen tuna steak in lemon juice, black pepper and freeze dried parsley for about 30 minutes. Coat with olive oil and wrap in foil, making sure you leave air space for the fish to steam. Or cook in a hot oven or on the barbecue for 10 minutes or so, until fish is opaque and flakes easily. For tasty chicken, mix together olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt, black pepper and chilli flakes. Marinade chicken breast fillets for up to two hours in the fridge, before barbecuing or pan frying them. Garlic If you ever wondered why there are no vampires in Spain, it's because virtually everything is cooked with garlic. You can even buy garlic shoots in the market, which resemble spring onions but are pink at the bottom. The Spanish eat them in salads. The garlic cloves are bigger and the flavour is stronger than you may have been used to, so experiment to find the right level for you. You can always add more, but you can't take it out of the finished dish! The Spanish love fresh crusty bread and Ali Oli before a meal. Making your own is easy. Buy good mayonnaise, and add loads of crushed or grated garlic until you can smell it coming. Paprika A much more gentle spice than its close relative, chilli. Many Spanish recipes call for paprika, and it's great for adding flavour without heat to soups and stews. I always add paprika to omelettes and scrambled egg, and it's a great way to perk up egg mayonnaise. Saffron The most expensive spice in the world, but so much cheaper here in Spain. Saffron is an essential ingredient for paella, but to keep the cost down, the Spanish will also add yellow food colouring. And don't fall into the trap of substituting turmeric – it will give your paella a bitter flavour. With these basic ingredients, you're ready to roll in your Spanish kitchen!

One Wish A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of the sudden he said out loud, "Lord grant me one wish." Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said, "Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish" The man said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii, so I can drive over anytime I want to." The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the logistics of that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me." The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I have been married and divorced four times. All of my wives said that I am uncaring and insensitive. I wish that I could understand women, I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say "nothing" and how I can make a woman truly happy" After a few minutes God said, "You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?"

Precious

Home needed

for these two beautiful young adult cats

“Hand crafted jewellery”

We are relocating and sadly need to find a home for our beloved cats. They are looking for a campo home with someone who is prepared to spend the time needed to settle them into a new environment – preferably one without other animals or small children. Both cats have been neutered, are clean, incredibly affectionate and gentle and spend a lot of time in each other's company. We will miss them very much but will be happy if we can find them a new and loving home. Visit Divas Boutique and Emporium to see the full range of Precious jewellery available or commission your own piece at no extra cost!

At Divas Boutique & Emporium, Puente Don Manuel (next to Morenos Bar), Alcaucin. Tel: 618 928 852

Ginger is male and Black Cat is female. They are both around 5 years old and are in excellent health. They come with their own supplies of cat food and Frontline plus cat beds, carrying basket and most importantly, a catflap!

OUT OF AMMO

OUT ALL WEEKEND

An 80-year old man was having his annual checkup and the doctor asked him how he was feeling.

A man left work one Friday afternoon. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending his entire paycheck. When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions.

"I've never been better!" he boasted. "I've got an eighteen year old bride who's pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?" The doctor considered this for a moment, then said, "Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day, he went out in a bit of a hurry, and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun." The doctor continued, "So he was in the woods, and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle. And do you know what happened?" the doctor queried.

Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, "How would you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days?" He replied, "That would be fine with me." Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

Mike Jameson - La Vinuela

Dumbfounded, the old man replied, "No." The doctor continued, "The bear dropped dead in front of him!" "That's impossible!" exclaimed the old man. "Someone else must have shot that bear." "That's kind of what I'm getting at," replied the doctor.

Mike Jameson - La Vinuela

ONE MORNING One morning while making breakfast, a man walked up to his wife and pinched her on her butt and said "You know, if you firmed this up, we could get rid of your girdle". While this was on the edge of intolerable, she thought herself better and replied with silence. The next morning the man woke his wife with a pinch on the breast and said, "You know, if you firmed these up, we could get rid of your bra".

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

This was beyond a silence response, so she rolled over and grabbed him by the penis. With a death grip in place, she said, "You know, if you firmed this up, we could get rid of your brother".

CAMPO Friday 4th February saw four members of the CAMPO Group attend a ceremony at the Ayuntamiento. In front of a lively group of visitors from Malaga, Ray Rowden, Sue van de Water, Tom Sobel and Debi Bond handover a cheque for 2.000€ to the Director of the Instituto de Cómpeta. Both the Director and the Alcalde spoke very warmly, supportively and gratefully about fund raising events such as the Dance Gala and have pledged to support future extravaganzas. The money comes at a difficult time for all and will go towards the new Children's Library for which CAMPO are very pleased.

so it could be presented to the Mayor for the village of Cómpeta. The plaque was a beautiful piece of glass work demonstrating the skill of Birke herself. It is a lovely piece and will be treasured by the village. Birke also contacted The Grapevine to ensure a personal thank you was printed. Birke is really appreciative and thanks everyone who donated and raised money.

Spanish painter opens at Cerezo's Gallery, Canillas de Albaida. Internationally known Spanish painter and muralist Jaime Adan on 19 March opens a solo exhibit of paintings drawn from area private collections. Adan, who lives and works in Mexico, has exhibited twice in Competa at the Galaria de Hadriano. Adan, who just completed a 1 x 33 m. mural in San Jose, California, has often focused on the poor and indigenous people of Latin America. NEW BISTRO OPENS AT PAVO REAL Ben Alford, also known as The Prince in Cinderella has started a new service called

Bistro B at the Pavo Real. His first event, on Valentines Night offered an Italian theme. Bistro B promises no frozen products, no microwave use, and fresh seasonal foods. The opening night lived up to this promise. I enjoyed a tomato and mozzarella starter, garnished with freshly chopped basil and balsamic sauce, accompanied by fresh garlic bread. My main course was home made pasta in a creamy mushroom and Parmesan sauce; the pasta was a treat to the palate. My dessert was a fabulous home made tiramisu. This was all helped down with a good quality white wine. The wine stock is limited, but includes red, white and a ros'e and great value. Alternatives on the menu were chicken breast in a Tuscan tomato sauce or freshly made pizza with a range of toppings. All diners seemed very content and empty plates went back to the kitchen. Service was excellent and timed well. The old dining room at the Pavo has been completely redecorated and redesigned, giving the place a contemporary feel that makes for a pleasant dining experience. Ben is planning to run Bistro B for three nights a week, probably Thursday, Friday and Saturday and will offer two sittings, one at 7.30 and one at 9.30. A good quality core menu will be augmented by themed nights and plans include Indian, Chinese and Thai nights. Ray Rowden
