It became an official policy of the Spanish government to regain control of the rock during the dictatorship of General Franco, and it has been so ever since.

n increasing number of British people have applied for Spanish nationality since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a process known as Brexit. According to data from Spain’s General Department for Registries and Notaries, 166 Britons requested Spanish citizenship in the first 10 months of 2018. While the number is low compared to the 10,067 requests from Moroccans and 2,001 from Venezuelans, it is more than triple the 50 requests made by British nationals in 2015, the year before the Brexit referendum. This puts Britons in fourth place on the list of EU members who want Spanish citizenship, coming in after Romanians, Italians and Bulgarians
couples are having their first child later in life, something that reduces the probability of people having more children, according to Daniel Devolder, from the Demographic Studies Center at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. During the year 2017, first-time mothers were on average aged 32.1 in Spain, a record high. “The rise in the age when women are having their first child is the main problem that is affecting Spain’s fertility rate,” Devolder explains.

Romans. Believing that Janus symbolically looked backwards into the previous year and ahead into the future, the Romans offered sacrifices to the deity and made promises of good conduct for the coming year.
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS Is This The Year We Stick to Them?
A
h, New Year’s resolutions. Those things you embark upon with such gusto on January 1, determined that this. Will. Be. The. Year. Then, as always, life gets in the way. Late nights at work laugh in the face of decision to clock a 10K each A.M. Friends, still throwing parties to soften the holidaysare-over sting, turn your Drynuary into Drown(in wine)uary. The list goes on, changing your habits, no matter how well-meaning, is hard. And if you're looking for New Year's resolution ideas you can actually stick to, well, you're probably going to have to look past the big, giant, obvious ones and seek ones that may seem smaller, but will have a bigger impact in the long run The most common New Year's resolutions include: * Exercise more * Lose weight * Eat more healthily * Take a more active approach * to health * Learn new skill or hobby * Spend more time on personal * wellbeing

The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year—though for them the year began not in January but in midMarch, when the crops were planted. During a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered the forerunners of our New Year’s resolutions. If the Babylonians kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods’ favor—a place no one wanted to be. A similar practice occurred in ancient Rome, after the reformminded emperor Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar and established January 1 as the beginning of the new year circa 46 B.C. Named for Janus, the twofaced god whose spirit inhabited doorways and arches, January had special significance for the
For early Christians, the first day of the new year became the traditional occasion for thinking about one’s past mistakes and resolving to do and be better in the future. In 1740, the English clergyman John Wesley, founder of Methodism, created the Covenant Renewal Service, most commonly held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Also known as known as watch night services, they included readings from Scriptures and hymn singing, and served as a spiritual alternative to the raucous celebrations normally held to celebrate the coming of the new year. Now popular within evangelical Protestant churches, especially African-American denominations and congregations, watch night services held on New Year’s Eve are often spent praying and making resolutions for the coming year. Despite the tradition’s religious roots, New Year’s resolutions today are a mostly secular practice. Instead of making promises to the gods, most people make resolutions only to themselves, and focus purely on self-improvement (which may explain why such resolutions seem so hard to follow through on). According to recent research, while as many as 45% of Americans say they usually make New Year’s resolutions, only 8 percent are successful in achieving their goals. But that dismal record probably won’t stop people from making resolutions anytime soon—after all, we’ve had about 4,000 years of practice.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS I Am A Foreigner And I Want To Buy A House On The Costa Del Sol: FAQ (Part I)

. What are the requirements for a foreigner to purchase property on the Costa del Sol? To purchase property on the Costa del Sol or elsewhere in Spain, foreigners only need an Identity Number for Foreigners, (Número de Identidad de Extranjero or NIE), which may be applied for at Government delegations or subdelegations or at any Foreign Office (Oficina de Extranjería). If you are unable to personally apply for a NIE, you may call in a legal representative, who will do the paperwork for you if duly authorised. To speed up the processing of the NIE (a personal, unique, sequential identification number) and enter into a mortgage contract for your home, do not hesitate to contact us through any of our offices. Our team of lawyers is at your service.

Or is it preferable to ask for one in my country of origin? No Spanish legislation forces buyers to get a mortgage in Spain to purchase a home. 5. Would the residence permit be granted only to me as the property owner, or may my family also benefit from it? In Spain, family reunification is currently regulated under temporary residence. cyclemalaga.com No.1 for bike rental in the Axarquia. Don't just take our word for it! Wonderfull ride in Competa We were a group of 10 guys (for some it was first time on a real race-bike), who rented bikes via cyclemalaga (Hellen and Steve) and can give our highest recommendation. We met them in the square at Competa as agreed, and they where ready with all the bikes, which was top-quality!!! carbon bikes, great helmets and also drink-bottles that we bought for 5€ each, and could keep afterwards. Our rute was Competa - Canillas de albaida, Archez, Arenas, Velez Malaga and down to the coast to have lunch. Then to Torrox and from there up to Competa. Very nice trip!! We can only give the best recommendations to cyclemalaga.com and would recommend everyone to take a biketrip is the most beautifull surroundings. micben86 Frederiksberg, Denmark Cycling trip with Steven Bert and Thomas did a cycling trip of 65 km with Steven. The equipment was perfect, the guidance and service were also the best. One telephone call two days in advance and everything was organised as agreed on. Thank you, Steven !! Cycle Malaga = Excellent Highly recommended. Helen responds to emails quickly and the service from Steve is first class - delivery, set up, pedal options and very knowledgeable, about the excellent bikes and cycling terrain. A great experience. Stewart G London, United Kingdom “Great bike and great service” I hired a bike for 10 days whilst on holiday in Competa in August. Steve delivered an almost brand new Giant TCR Advanced road bike directly to my villa and gave me some great advice on local cycling routes. He even popped back again later to drop off a map of the area which came in very handy. The bike was great, nice and light for the climbs, 22 speed Ultegra groupset (that extra gear definitely came in handy) and a great fit for me (not always easy as I'm 6'6"). Whilst some of the climbs in the area are tough, the scenery when you get to the top is absolutely stunning and well worth the effort! A great service from Helen and Steve and I would recommend them to anyone cycling in the Competa/Nerja/Malaga area. I'll be back again myself next year! Terry R Huntingdon, United Kingdom

A couple of people have asked me to write this and I speak from experience. I thought I was 'on the case' but when the time came, I had no idea about my husband's passwords. Luckily my sons worked them out, poking around and experimenting with different dates etc.
THOUGHTS FOR THE NEW YEAR ON BEREAVEMENT Josephine Drew Reports
A
lot of couples share everything which is great, but others like to leave the big decisions to one partner, and the smaller ones with the other one. How many times have you heard, 'Oh, he/she deals with all that', followed by an airy wave of the hand? When the sun is shining and there are activities and bars to keep one occupied, a visit from the 'grim reaper' is never much thought about. Oh!, you joke about it with friends, especially after a couple of pints when someone hears a song and says, 'I want this at my funeral', and everyone joins in a jolly discussion!
your partner want a cremation, or burial? Can you put your hands on the wills? Do you have up to date phone numbers for informing private pension companies, state pension, the social security number and maybe mother's maiden name! Nie Number. House paperwork. The list is endless. How do you know if you qualify for a state funeral benefit. ( Google it) Will the estate have to go to probate in the UK, and where is the solicitor you used in Spain and also in the UK? So many things to do and think about. And on a cold night, why not get to grips with the paperwork.
After a while there are the other difficulties to overcome, the electricity, telephone, internet etc, and all local bills. If the bills are in the name of the deceased, I would make a suggestion that you get someone to phone these companies on your behalf. Its The one left behind has all the very stressful having to explain clearing up to do. I am talking you have lost a partner. The same paperwork, not goods. applies to the car paperwork, which will need changing, if its not Initially you need to know if there in your name. The Spanish love is a funeral plan and do you know their paperwork! where the plastic card is? Did
Now that Winter is here, perhaps its time to seriously talk to your partner, about what will happen when the day arrives, and as sure as day turns to night, this will happen to all couples.
22 The Grapevine
I did the day to day bill payments, cash withdrawals, credit and debit card telephone calls. I knew where the paperwork was stored, in two huge cases, which still held 40 year old pay slips and P60s. The paperwork from Spain was in better order in another ancient suitcase. Knowing where the papers are, is not the same as knowing which ones are needed. It took days to wade through the paperwork before I found the relevant papers for pensions, investments etc. The rest I soaked in several baths of cold water, and put the pulp in bin bags. I didn’t have a shredder! Another true story is of a retired couple who did most things together. He looked healthy, shopped most days, and made the large decisions. His wife didn't get out much on her own, as she had trouble walking, but apart from that was healthy. Then quite suddenly he became forgetful, and eventually was diagnosed with the start of dementia. He unexpectedly had a heart attack and died leaving the widow, knowing exactly where the wills were. She went to the place. found the envelope, only to discover the wills were not there. He had obviously put them in a safe place, whilst confused. They have not been found to this day. My apologies for such a sad subject on this Winter's day. But I felt it needed to be out there, because it affects quite alot of Retirees.

AFTER THE HO, HO, HO COMES THE TUM, TUM, TUM… Losing Weight after the Christmas Holidays
W
e have all been there, eaten a little (or a lot) too much? Possibly not in the best shape to begin with and feeling a little down? It’s OK, as its just a few days a year and of course we may have the intention to make it all right in the New Year with a resolution. (Ha, Ha!) Georgina and I (I’m Steve) were very overweight (Obese), we had tried so many diets, fads, Atkins and even spent a fortune on; lowcarb, low calorie drinks, meals and chocolate bars (Over £800) on a program that took off the weight very fast, but it then proceeded to pile it back on even faster… Plus juicing, Gym and in the past we also even took classes and attended slimmers clubs, like weight watchers but that also did not work.
pre-diabetic, with a Body Mass Index of 41 plus. Termed morbidly obese (It means that my weight was sending me to an early grave, not to put too fine a point on it! Anyway, we decided to try a new program of our own design based loosely on our failed experiences and researching new methods and techniques and basically just trying them and working harder at what worked and dropping what didn’t work. A classic basic trial and error process. Since the 22nd of Sept. 2018 I have Lost 12.9Kgs in total to Dec 11th. 2018. Over the 12 months I lost a staggering 26kgs in total. Georgina is now 76kgs and falling weekly, we are both averaging around 0.5 kilo per week and it is keeping off.
If anyone is interested in how we did it, you can come along to meet What to Do? I was 121.8 kilos a us and see how we really are now, year ago and just turned 60 and I as I have cut my blood pressure had been overweight for a very medication by 50% and can now long time. Then I had a serious exercise daily as previously, I got health problem and was diagnosed out of breath just tying my as having severe hypertension shoelaces (sad but very true) … (High Blood Pressure) and was There is NO Magic formula, science

and biology teaches us very simply that if you burn more calories than you eat, you body will lose weight… Wow really that simple? Huh! NO, it’s not because there are many other factors to consider and counting calories? Well been there and done that, it was a total pain… And in the long run still ineffective. So, if you want to know more about what we did and how we did it? Please note we are a NOT FOR PROFIT Business… This is about helping others. We are planning to hold an informal meeting at 6.30pm with a short presentation just 30minutes, followed by a Question and Answer session of 30 mins on Thursday 10th January in Competa at our offices (We run a local dive and first-Aid Training business as well) 2A. Pradollano is where all the hotels, restaurants, holiday apartments and most of the ski rental shops are based. Pradollano is divided into three sections; lower, mid and upper, according to the distance from the city centre. Freestyle Park Sierra Nevada is home to a huge freestyle park, known as Sulayr. The freestyle snow park is increasingly popular and attracting some of the biggest names in the international snowboarding community. Sulayr was previously located in the Borreguiles area. They recently opened a new beginners freestyle zone that is aimed specifically at children and people with no ‘freestyle’ experience.

AXARFUSION Fibre Optics Comes to Competa
A
XARFUSION is a telecommunications company who provides fibre optic internet connections in the village of Competa. For the other local villages eg: Canillas de Albaida, Archez, Sayalonga, Arenas, Torrox and the surrounding countryside AXARFUSION provides fast WIFI internet connections. They also offer very competitively priced mobile telephone contracts, fixed line phone numbers and television services. This month I met with Dani Hill and his business partner Borja Garcia for a chat about the services they offer and how this new business is going. Dani moved to Spain with his family in 2000, he finished his education in Spain and specialised in telecommunications at College. He has always been interested in computers and telecommunications and so it only seemed natural to pursue this line of employment. Upon leaving college he started to work for a telecommunications company in Malaga and then later worked for a local Internet service provider. He gained further experience working as a systems administrator for Axartel. It was here where he met his now business partner Borja. Borja is the owner of Axartel and was rolling our fibre optic networks along the coast to areas such as Nerja and Torrox. The opportunity
38 The Grapevine
arose for Dani to lead with this new technology in his home town of Competa. Dani and Borja had worked well together on previous projects and have developed an excellent working relationship. Borja's experience, the latest technology and Dani's local experience meant this new business had all the right elements for success. For many years the village of Competa has suffered with old and poor quality ADSL cables, so this was the perfect location to lay the new technology of fibre optic cables. Dani, under the new company name of AXARFUSION met with the town hall and presented them with a project of how the system would be rolled out and the proposed benefits for the village. It took some time to get the correct licenses in place, but in June this year the fibre optic cable installation was finished. Dani explained to me that fibre optics is the future and the latest technology, it is not affected by poor weather and there are fewer components to go wrong. The internet signal is then transmitted via WIFI to the countryside by what Dani describes as currently the most up to date technology available. Dani was keen to emphasise his service is reliable and the customer service impeccable. The AXARFUSION office is
beneath the Eroski supermarket on the La Rampa, the steep hill up to the la Plaza Almijara in Competa. There is a car park outside the office and Dani welcomes you to drop by if you would like to discuss your internet, telephone or television requirements. The office is open Mon to Fri 10.00am to 2.00pm and 4.00pm to 7.30pm and Sat 10.00am to 2.00pm. There is always someone in the office to help with your questions. And for out of office hours a tecnitian can be contacted via email or telephone. As he is “a local and knows many people in the area he is especially keen to ensure his service has no or very little down time and if there is a problem with the connection he will endeavour to resume the service as quickly as possible. Dani is very well known in the area and the business has grown quickly just by word of mouth. He and his colleague in the office both speak Spanish and English, so both the local Spanish residents and expats alike can benefit. AXARFUSION offer a wide range of services from home internet to business internet solutions and also mobile and landline telephone contracts that include international calls. It really does seem that Dani has all your internet, telephone and TV needs covered!

likely to stick with their workouts. Tips for home and gym exercisers Challenge yourself and avoid boredom. At home, you won't have the variety of equipment and classes that are available at a gym. So surf the Internet and browse fitness magazines to check out new workouts and make sure you're exercising correctly. Find an exercise partner. You'll be less likely to find excuses when you've arranged to work out with a friend. Schedule your workouts. Have a plan,l ook at a planner and write out your exercise appointments one month in advance. If something comes up and you have to change one, reschedule it immediately.
EXERCISE IN 2019 strength work three times a week. Be sure your strength workout covers all major muscle groups, in your upper body, lower body, abdominals and back. Aim for three sets of 10-15 repetitions of each strength exercise.
Use a diary to track your progress and jot down any breakthroughs you may have. When you have a bad day, write that down, too, to help you to find patterns you can break. For example, you may find an egg-white omelet gets you through your morning workout better than toast and cereal.
No matter what type of exercise you do, be sure to start slowly and gradually increase your workout time and intensity. And don't forget to listen to your body
Set goals, like training for a race or losing 20 pounds. Goals should be something you can't do right now, but you know is within your reach.
Working out at home has obvious advantages. But there are obstacles, too: distractions from the phone, the kids, the dog, the Internet and the refrigerator can derail a workout. And that's if you can get started in the first place. When you're at home, it's easy to find something else that needs to be done.
Give yourself mini-rewards along the way.Perhaps most important, make exercise as integral to your life as sleeping and eating. You have to think of it as a lifestyle change. It doesn't end. Get out of the mind frame that exercise is something you're only going to do for a period of time.
Its Never to Late to Start
A
n effective fitness program has five components, all of which you can do at home or at a gym. A warm up. A cardiovascular (aerobic) workout. Resistance (strength-building) exercises. Flexibility moves. A cooldown A warm-up could be an easy walk outside or on a treadmill, or a slow pace on a stationary bike. For the cardiovascular portion, walk or pedal faster, do step aerobics with a video, or jump rope -- whatever you enjoy that gets your heart rate up. WHAT IS A DAFO? Andalucian Real Estates Explains
WHAT IS A DAFO? In 2012 the government of Andalusia approved a regulation with the idea to regularize (NOT LEGALISE) properties located on non-development land in breach of urban planning regulations. The DAFO is a certificate with a specific date of when the property was built, how many years have elapsed since construction and to certify that the property continues to exist without penalties in the future. The procedure doesn't mean the legalization of the property but a regularisation. The Town Hall certifies the legal situation and confirms in writing that it will not be possible for this house to be subject to any future penalties due to the time elapsed. IS DAFO MANDATORY FOR THE SALE OF A PROPERTY? DAFO certificate is NOT a legal requirement to buy/sell your property. The DAFO provides certainty to the buyer that they
60 The Grapevine
will not have problems with the Town Hall in the future as thy will have in writing a document confirming the legal situation of the property. Therefore, we can say that DAFO is recommended but not required for the sale of a property. WHAT IS DAFO PROCEDURE? In order to apply for the DAFO certificate we need a project by an architect, to pay a fee on the value of the building which may range from 2.5% to 4.5% depending on the Town Hall and also the water and electricity supply needs to be verified as well as the need for a septic tank. Once the architect has prepared the documentation (photos, maps, etc) and the project is submitted, the technician from the Town Hall will make a visit to verify whether the property complies with all the requirements or not. Once this procedure is completed, which normally takes
6 and 12 months, the Town Hall will issue a resolution certifying Assimilated out of OrdinationAsimilado a Fuera de Ordenaciรณn from all structure built on the plot. WHAT IS THE COSTS? The costs of the DAFO certificate will depend on many factors. The biggest costs is the stamp duty taxes to be paid to the Town Hall which may range from 2.5% to 4.5% on the value of the building on the date it was built, which normally is around 4,000- 6,000 Euro. If a new septic tank is required, the cost of installing it is around 3,000 Euros. Also there is d the architect fee and legal fees, if any. Please contact your legal adviser for more info. If you would like any more information regarding the sale and buying process do not hesitate to contact us at Andalucian Real Estates. This text was checked by Axarquia Solicitors

KINGS DAY IN SPAIN
The Festivities Continue
C
hristmas may have come and gone, but many kids here in Spain are still eagerly awaiting their presents. That’s because it is not Santa Claus who brings them gifts on Christmas Day.
The tradition here in Spain is that Los Reyes Magos, known as the Three Wise Men or the Three Kings in English, bring Spanish children their gifts on the Day of the Epiphany, January 6th. According to Christian tradition, this was the day that Melchior (known as Melchor in Spanish), Caspar (Gaspar), and Balthasar (Baltasar) came to visit the baby Jesus and brought their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Read on to learn more about the Spanish Christmas tradition of Los Reyes Magos.
de los Reyes Magos, a reenactment of the arrival of the Three Kings. These parades are truly a sight to behold! Amidst dancers, musicians, and puppeteers, the Kings ride on camels or elaborate floats and throw goodies, usually candy or sweets, down to the children.
Later that evening, kids leave out their shoes in a spot where the Kings are sure to see them. Much like the traditional milk and cookies for Santa Claus and his reindeer, Spanish children often set out plates of food or sweets for los Reyes. The camels also receive dried grass or hay from the traditionalists, or milk and bread if those aren’t handy! The next morning, children are delighted to discover that los Reyes have nibbled the food or eaten it entirely. But most Cabalgata de Reyes importantly, next to their shoes Festivities officially start the day are the wrapped presents from before La Adoración de los Reyes los Reyes Magos, waiting to be Magos. On January 5th, in towns ripped open! and cities all around the country, Spanish families line the streets Roscón de Reyes to get a glimpse of the Cabalgata Another important tradition after
68 The Grapevine
the gift-opening is the breakfast of Roscón de Reyes. It’s a delicious round cake with candied fruit on top. The fruit symbolizes the precious gems that adorned the Wise Men’s clothing. You can purchase a plain roscón or one with fresh nata (whipped cream), trufa (truffle cream) or cabello de ángel (candied spaghetti squash). In addition, there will be two plastic-wrapped figurines inside the cake: a faba bean and a small king. Whoever gets the slice of the cake with the small king is the “king” or “queen” of the banquet. As a result, this person will have good luck for the rest of the year. On the other hand, whoever finds the faba bean has to pay for the roscón! Although sightings of Santa Claus are becoming more common in recent years, historically La Adoración de los Reyes Magos is the most important Christmas tradition in Spain.

hope you all opened your doors on the last stroke of midnight to see out the old year and welcome in the new. I may not be the first person to cross your doorway in 2019 – nor am I tall, dark and handsome – and I won´t be carrying coal, bread, or money, but greenery, yes! But my wish and resolution would be to make a difference to our lives in 2019 and I know that many of you are willing, ready and already making that change. Let's resolve to help Mother

of 'civilisation' we have wiped out 83% of wild mammals and half of all plant life; of all the mammals on Earth, 96% are livestock and humans, only 4% are wild Some might say the entire climatic mammals. Chicken bones are now ubiquitous across the planet; catastrophe is scare-mongering farmed poultry and domesticated nonsense. But it's hard to ignore birds make up 70% of birds on the ever-increasing deluge of Earth today. We've reached the signs – droughts, torrential stage where of all the mammals flooding, hurricanes, wild fires – it's daily and getting closer to all of on Earth, humans and livestock make up 96%, only 4% are wild us. Just look on the internet and creatures. Marine mammals suffer you'll see all kinds of scary the same; their numbers are statistics. The world's 7.6 billion people represent just 0.01% of life reckoned to be down by 80% in on our planet yet, since the dawn the last 300 years, largely as a Nature become natural, magical and beautiful again; she only needs our help; she knows how to heal if we will only allow her.

result of whaling. We may think we are great and mighty but there are three times more viruses than humans; three times more worms (though you may say you never see one!); in spite of all our decimating efforts there are still 3 times more fish: 17 times more insects, spiders and crustaceans; 200 times more fungi; 1200 times more bacteria and 7500 times more plants. And plants still account for 82% of biomass on our planet. These statistics may seem, initially, encouraging but it just goes to show how teeming with life our planet once was. Nowadays, 200 species are being lost every day. This is the level of our destruction. We have a hugely disproportionate impact; it is our duty and responsibility to put things right. There is a tremendous gap between what needs to be done and what is being done. We all know the three R's – reduce, reuse, recycle but there's a new R on the block – rewilding. I like all the R words but I do find rewilding intensely exciting. It basically means letting Nature take care of itself, allowing her natural rhythms to create wilder and biodiverse habitats – with some help, instead of destruction, from us. It involves the reintroduction of key species of animals, often apex predators. You might say it's like returning to the 'good old days' but with modern twists. Is it feasible? You might well ask. The problem with lots of current-day conservation is that it is costly. Planting 50 million trees to help with CO2 levels is expensive, even when carried out by volunteers, and how many of the saplings will survive? And, worse, we are creating, in many cases, another mono-culture. If Nature were allowed a free hand, it would be far cheaper, more natural with greater bio-diversity and more effective. In those 'good old days' there was scrubland, often thorny, composed of plants like hawthorn, bramble,

dog-rose and gorse. This provided a great buffer against predatory grazing animals, wind, drought, flooding and it helped the mycorrhizal world underground connect and develop. At the same time it provided great habitat for insects, birds and small animals who would pollinate and spread seeds around. And, coincidentally, provided us with materials for tools, furniture, thatching, firewood and charcoal, dyes and medicines. I was gobsmacked to read recently that a single jay can plant 7,500 acorns in just four weeks – and for free! They carry up to six acorns in their gullets at a time, flying, often, to protective scrub and store them there for feeding during the winter. Like the squirrel, many of these seeds are forgotten and develop into saplings nurtured by the thorny scrub. It's been said that once a squirrel could have ran through the tops of trees from John O'Groats to Lands End! I doubt the truth of it, because clearings and sunlight are part of the essential process; without sunlight there's little throb of insects, birdsong or wild flowers but it's a nice (bushy) tale! One thing is for sure, this type of planting ensures diversity, healthy trees and natural regeneration. So how can we help? Invite life back into our gardens! One of the great parts of living here is that we don't, generally, have pocket-handkerchief sized gardens – we have land. Land to give back to Mother Nature – leave it alone and let it rewild. Retain your garden patch around the house but use more natural plantings – species that are native, perhaps, or, at least, adapted to our climate. But the wilder parts of your garden could be just that – let the wildflowers have their day, the 'weeds' provide for a myriad of creatures, the scrub give
succour to our trees. Those of you who delight in strolling around Viveros Florena will recognise that we have long upheld this practise. We have no unfriendly aluminium and glass. Our garden areas are not immaculate; we do have scrubland, we have hedges, trees, overgrown corners and even weeds! Our recycling watering system provides shady, damp corners for frogs and toads. Birds nest in our trees, even though they're for sale! We'll reserve them and you can collect once the fledglings have flown – believe me, we've done that. We've spiders, snakes, robins and chameleons and we love them all- well, in truth, my daughters aren´t too keen on spiders and grasshoppers but it's a work in progress! Heal the Earth – every little square forms part of a big patchwork blanket that our Governments and Big Businesses cannot touch. As landowners and gardeners we owe it back to Mama Nature. (Figures taken from The Guardian newspaper) The Viveros Florena Team wish you all a very green 2019.
