Happy New Year and all the best for 2020 from the cyclemalaga.com team

BIKE HIRE TOURS & HOLIDAYS BIKE RENTAL ROAD BIKE MTB E-MTB

Editors Note... Happy New Year to you all. It’s about that time again: A new year is upon us, which means new beginnings and the utmost attempts for selfbetterment—only with all efforts likely to be abandoned by February! It’s the same story every year, so why should this year be any different? Some of us will vow to lose weight while others promise to save money. A number of us might even resolve to grow professionally.

Personally, I don't make New Year resolutions I would rather reflect on the year that has passed, not dwell on the negative but instead take lessons from the past year mull them over in my mind and then file them away, taking those lessons or fresh inspiration to create some new ideas for the year ahead. Whatever your plans or resolutions I wish you all the best for 2020. Our first magazine for 2020 includes our quarterly Property Feature so if one of your resolutions is to find a way to move to Spain or save for that dream holiday home pages 54 to 61 you will give you a starting point. order. Personally I particularly loved the fresh orange. After a stay with family in the area, we returned about 9 days later in order to stay for another 7 nights. On arrival we were offered a free upgrade to a superior double bedroom with balcony on the first floor with the same fantastic views. ln my opinion it is worth the few extra euros. The rooms and en suite have been refurbished. Chairs both on the balcony and inside are padded. Electric kettle, tea and coffee are supplied. The few extra euros are worth spending.

HOTEL BALCON, COMPETA

Howver, I have saved the best to last, the staff, each and everyone, were just great. Whilst I do know many names it would be unfair to the others if I named them. Everyone was so nice and tried their very best.

Lovely Place and Fantastic Staff Some examples:

ecently a couple stayed at the Hotel Balcon in Competa. They were so delighted with the facilities and service they felt compelled to write to The Grapevine Magazine with a review of their visit. We arrived at the Balcon about 3.00pm on a Tuesday in late November to stay for three nights (this was to be followed with a later longer visit). When I arrived we realised we had not booked a superior room which we normally do and this was my mistake. So we stayed for the first time in a standard double room with a balcony overlooking the valley and Mediterranean. This was absolutely adequate if not good especially considering the more than reasonable price. The hotel itself is a 3 star hotel but to me I reckon its worth at least another half star. It has a tennis court, swimming and paddling pools, an outside bar in the summer, a reception, great terrace, restaurant, cafe bar, lounge, two lifts and of course the important free wi fi.

10 The Grapevine

It is worth mentioning the hotel bar and restaurant is closed on a Wednesday, after breakfast, in order that the staff have a well earned rest. However, there are several restaurants in close proximity even one directly next door where we had some lovely meals. Additionally there is a very well equipped small convenience store opposite and a take- away fish and chip shop about two minutes walk away. As we are frequent visitors to the area we have seen the hotel improve their facilities every year. This year, for example, an easy entry chair into the swimming pool for people who have difficulties has been installed. Also, the electric gate can now be operated from your phone which gains clients access to the hotel, chalets and a very good car park. Breakfast was included in the price of our stay, it is both continental and English, served from about 8.00am to 10.30am but they are not pedantic. Hot food is replenished, they also cook to

Luggage taken to our car. Free tapas on several occasions. A menu brought from the restaurant next door which we ordered from and it was brought to us in the bar of the hotel. When the bar was closed on a Wednesday, we purchased a couple of cans from the convenience store and consumed them in the lounge. We were given glasses from the bar in the hotel and they opened the bar for us to have another couple of drinks before going out for dinner Always happy and attentive. In conclusion, in my opinion, this is an extremely good 3 star hotel with 5 star people. I hope they all have a fantastic Christmas and prosperous New Year. Des Wyke

panish police have arrested a man alleged to be the pilot of the “narco-submarine” that was intercepted off the coast of Galicia last weekend carrying three tonnes of cocaine. Two other men were arrested at the scene after allegedly trying to scuttle the semisubmersible vessel and swim to shore. The Spanish news agency Efe reported that the suspected pilot had been arrested in the Galician seaside town of Cangas, still wearing a wetsuit. Two other men have been arrested in the city of Vigo, bringing the total number of arrests to five. The craft was towed into port at Aldán , where it was found to contain 3,000kg of cocaine, divided into 152 bales.

pain's defence ministry is opening more special forces roles to women as part of international efforts to tackle terrorism and unconventional warfare. Defence Minister Margarita Robles says the UN has called for more women to help resolve conflicts worldwide. Arabicspeaking women are among those sought for UN- or Nato-led missions in conflict areas, such as Iraq or Libya. Ms Robles was visiting the army's command for special operations, where some women have joined elite units. At the command centre (MOE) in Rabasa, near Alicante, the minister watched a mock assault on a terrorist compound with the aim of seizing intelligence - the kind of raid conducted often against insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ms Robles said the MOE had to be combat-ready not only in terms of military robotics and other advanced technology, but also "by understanding the terrorists' social and cultural domain". Some jobs are reserved for women, such as searching women at checkpoints. In conservative, patriarchal societies it can be easier for women to glean intelligence from

chicken & mushroom pie and another sausage in batter and I wanted the scampi. I ordered for 7pm and went to Competa to collect it. It was ready waiting for me, on time and again it was still piping hot when I got home. Delicious was the family verdict, portions were generous certainly no one was left hungry!

GRANDAD´S CHIPPY A Review Of The Food At Competa´s Chippy ot, cold, sunny or rainy, we all love a portion of fish and chips, don't we? So, I couldn't resist the opportunity to pay a visit to the new chippy in Competa

H

was wrapped in the traditional paper and I was asked if I wanted salt & vinegar adding. I only live 10 minutes from town and by the time I got home the food was still hot.

Grandads Chippy which offers traditional Fish and Chips and other homemade and traditional British take way options opened just over 3 months and promises delicious, freshly prepared fish and chips, pies, sausages and more recently roast chickens

Taste-wise? It was impressive.

But how good is it? I went to find out (a few times!). On the first occasion we just dropped by for a couple of portions of fish and chips with mushy peas as I couldn't be bothered to cook. I didn’t have to wait long while it was prepared for us. The owners Laura and Colin are extremely friendly and will happily chat to you whilst preparing the food. Each portion

The chips were very crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I was informed it had taken 7 different varieties of potatoes to get the chips just right. The fish itself was bright white, moist and flaky and was covered in a deliciously crispy batter. The mushy peas were perfect too, which I thoroughly enjoyed. A few weeks later we had family visit so we decided to have fish and chips for dinner one evening. Instead of dropping in, I chose to send them a what's app as everybody wanted something different. Some wanted fish, others steak & kidney pie and

As a family we have now been back to Grandads Chippy several times. My family, when staying at the Balcon Hotel, decided one night to pop down the road and take fish and chips back to their room as they fancied a night in. Not everybody wants to eat out every night of their holiday and Grandads chippy provides a quick and delicious food option to take away. The only item they ask you to order in advance are the roast chickens and they make this easy via what's app or a phone call. All the food is cooked in 100% organic Oil, the chickens are free range and the food is served on recyclable cardboard trays. The only complaint they have had is people would like to sit in and eat their fish and chips. So, in order to react to their customers, they have taken on the unit next door and sometime early next year they will extend Grandads Chippy to have an eat in area whilst also extending the menu to create a full dinning experience such as providing traditional British dessert. They also intend to offer alcohol along with the standard soft drinks they currently provide. I can thoroughly recommend the food at Grandad Chippy's and look forward to seeing what they have in store for us next year. See Advert Opposite

CYCLING IN THE AXARQUIA A Cyclists Paradise by www.cyclemalaga.com

he Axarquia is a region of Andalusia that falls within the Malaga province. Its name is thought to derive from the Arabic word for “the East”. In this case it refers to East of Malaga. The area stretches from the East of Malaga to the East of Nerja and inland to the Sierras Tejeda and Almijara. The climate is subtropical with approximately 300 days of sunshine per year and little rainfall.

churches. The countryside is planted with almond, olive, avocado and citrus trees. Nearer the sea tropical fruit plantations are common. On the coast there are some larger seaside resorts. These include Nerja and Torre del Mar. Additionally, the coast has some spectacular unspoilt open stretches and smaller fishing villages that retain their Spanish character. This area of the Costa del Sol is much less developed than the stretches to the west of Malaga.

towns. However, once you steer your bike inland you will soon be climbing for some kilometres. Thankfully the gradients are not steep, usually between 5-8 percent. Any ascents are rewarded with fabulous views of the Mediterranean Sea, coastal sierras, and the pretty countryside. Most towns and villages have pleasant bars where you can rest, take a drink, eat some tapas and observe the local laidback life of the Axarquian’s.

This is a rugged region of deep ravines, hills, mountains, sandy beaches and hidden coves. Inland there are numerous beautiful white villages built on the side of hills. These are mostly all of Moorish origin. They have narrow winding streets, small houses, bars and pretty

This region is ideal training ground for cyclists. The roads are quiet and the climate suitable for most months of the year. It is worth noting that the coast road from the outskirts of Malaga to Nerja is relatively flat and not too busy particularly outside of the

Traffic is often light on the higher roads and the drivers usually respectful of cyclists in comparison to busier parts of Northern Europe. On the coast you can also find some beautiful places with a sea view to stop and recover before pushing on.

EXERCISES IN WRITING Josephine Drew Reports!

I

ts January and the days are short, so I decided to share with you a little something that I have been doing lately to pass the time away. (Steady!) This maybe of some interest to those who like words, and wordplay, crosswords, scrabble etc. I belong to the U3A Memoir Group and we do different exercises in writing to get our brains going. Once it was to compose a Diamond poem, and another a Haiku Poem. Before your eyeballs glaze over, please bear with me.

Poetry and Syllables had me totally uninterested). To precis this into Western form, it is five syllables, seven syllables and five syllables, on three lines, that do not rhyme! Google go on and on! After being confined to barracks with a bad cold for two weeks, and totally fed up with daytime brain-dead television, (but I do admit that it's fascinating watching HD, seeing the huge amounts of make up the presenters wear) that I decided to have a go. Japanese make it all about nature etc. but the Western examples I found didn’t!

(by the way I am not a poetry fan, but I like Pam Ayers, nor a Shakespeare fan, but do like Ben Elton's 'Upstart Fool' which uses real Shakespearean quotes out of text).

Here are a couple of amusing ones:

I resisted doing the Haiku Poetry, which was described as Japanese Poetry in seventeen syllables. (The words Japanese,

One shark said to the other when eating a clown fish this tastes funny

Boom boom boom bam bam My head is a battleground With countless outbursts

I didn’t make these up, they were on Google. Purists say it's a lot more complicated than this but I cant see why you cant have fun doing something without going into great intellectual depths! One Google nature one: Love is like Winter Warm breaths thaw cold hearts until One day the Spring comes And my first attempt: Palm outside my door Swaying in the sun and wind Calms my restless heart I find myself sitting on a bus mumbling to myself seventeen syllables whilst counting on my fingers! Then get indoors to write it down, and have totally forgotten it! An age thing. Are you still with me? Now onto the Diamond Poem,

(not rhyming). It took me a few days to get my head round this concept. Written in the shape of a diamond, with one word, two words, three and four, then three, two and one. That’s my simple explanation, Google again is so academic. The first and last word can be opposites or related. Also the forth line should have two nouns associated with the top word and two for bottom word, but I found some which don’t adhere to this formula! Here are two opposites, and two related subjects. Questions/Answers Mountain/Valley and Heat/Warmth Snake/Serpent Example of Diamond from Google: Smile happy, warm welcoming, inspiring, soothing curve, lips, expression, emotion disturbing, deterring, depressing

sad, unwelcome frown Here is my first attempt: dawn pink mauve dazzling awakening greeting birds, hope, cool, fade sinking, disappearing, gloaming purple orange dusk Have a go if you are so inclined, it beats picking fluff out of your navel! Axarquia U3A is where I go to the Memoir Workshop, and if you wish to join in the many activities there is a good website. Most things are centered around Torrox, Torre del Mar, and Velez Malaga. The Organization is very big in the UK, and we have a good membership here, with the fee currently 6e a year. I attend the Book Group, in Torrox, the Memoir writing and Craft by Aldi

in Caleta and the Munch Bunch in various locations, munching and chatting! Its a good way to meet people. A new group is starting up in the La Vinuela area in the New Year. I attend the meetings by bus, going on the 9.45 bus to Algarrobo Costa and then catching another bus to either Torrox or walk to Aldi. I know that some people are put off going by public transport, but very often when you attend, there is someone from your area who could give you a lift either to the bus stop or nearer home. I hope this is food for thought and I wish you a healthy January and February. Josephine Drew

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ, SAYALONGA Home to Málaga's Best Wines?

T

here's a winery above Sayalonga – it is just off the road between the town and the Archez junction. It's called Bodegas Bentomiz and the wine they make is first class. Set up by a Dutch couple who moved to the area almost 25 years ago, they produce wines that are distinctively fresh and subtle. The range is called “Ariyanas” and includes sweet and dry, white, red and rosé. The Ariyanas wines have caught the attention of the wine world at large. Over the 15 years they've been operating commercially they have found distribution in a dozen countries and placed the wines in some 20 or so Michelin-starred restaurants. Their dry muscat (Ariyanas Seco Sobre Lías Finas) and one of their sweet muscats (Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso) won in the Sabor a Málaga competition to be named the best of their respective categories. The story of how their business

38 The Grapevine

has developed is astonishing: André and Clara started in other fields; both are self-taught and yet have achieved a professional level of expertise and excellence. Their history – along with just what wine-making in Málaga's Axarquía region involves – can be discovered at the winery. They run a daily tour and tasting from Wednesday to Sunday, all year round. Not only that, but to provide a fuller experience of the wine with food, as well as developing their love of gastronomy and André's love of cooking, their wine-salon doubles as a lunch-time restaurant, with the gourmet meals served just after the tasting at 14:00 – so you can combine tour, tasting and lunch, if you wish. Accolades have rolled in from all sides: the food is just wonderful. Indeed, the reviews of Bodegas Bentomiz on TripAdvisor and Facebook, their client photos on Instagram (#bodegasbentomiz), and press articles, all express visitors'

delight in the passion that André, Clara and their small, dedicated team, display in creating a “complete wine experience”. For special occasions they go a little further. Their “Mountain Wine & Music” summer concerts are thrilling events with live music, gourmet food and wine all enjoyed beside the winery in one of the most beautiful places in the province. Their occasional “dinner and music” evenings allow André to develop exciting new menus. And this Christmas they're offering a splendid 7-course banquet with wine – the best gastronomic celebration! After Christmas, when we're all in the doldrums they have a special JANUARY OFFER – book lunch for 4 and one wine-pairing menu (a glass with each course) is free. That's a taste of the best of Málaga, free of charge – a mustdo experience www.bodegasbentomiz.com

HOW TO MAKE (AND KEEP) A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION More Than Half Of All Resolutions Fail, But This Year, They Don’t Have To Be Yours.

P

ick the Right Resolution. You’ll give yourself your best shot at success if you set a goal that’s doable — and meaningful too. A lot of these resolutions fail because they’re not the right resolutions. And a resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons: It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change. It’s too vague. You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution. Your goals should be smart — and SMART. That’s an acronym coined in the journal Management Review in 1981 for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. It may work for management, but it can also work in setting your resolutions, too. Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely saying ‘I want to lose weight.’You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time

40 The Grapevine

interval?”. Five pounds in the next two months — that’s going to be more effective. Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a fitness or weight loss related one, but it’s also important if you’re trying to cut back on something, too. If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out. Logging progress into a journal or making notes on your phone or in an app designed to help you track behaviours can reinforce the progress, no matter what your resolution may be. Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals. But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you frustrated, or affect other areas of your life to the point that your resolution takes over your life — and both you and your friends and family flail. So, for example, resolving to save enough money to retire in five years when you’re 30 years old is probably not realistic, but saving an extra 100 euro a month may be. (And if that’s easy, you can slide that number up to an

extra 200, 300 or 400 euro a month). Relevant. Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons? If you do it out of the sense of selfhate or remorse or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long,. But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, you’re changing the structure of your life, you’re bringing people into your life who will reinforce that resolution, then I think you have a fighting chance.” ç Time-bound. Like “achievable,” the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller intermediate goals set up along the way. Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress,. If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.”

GOODBYE AND THANK YOU! Competa Will Not Host An Artwalk Organised By Lieuwke Loth Next Year

T

here will not be another Art Walk in 2020. For the past few years, the Competa Art Walk has been one of the most interesting and inspiring cultural events in springtime on the Costa del Sol. Many visitors have enjoyed great art from a wide spectrum of artists, as well as enjoying interesting interaction with the artists themselves. Every year hotels were fully booked and restaurants packed. The village is already known as ‘a place to be’ for artists and musicians and it seems every year more and more people found their way to this inspiring area with its tempting art vibes to be found all over the place! Real estate agencies have seen an increase in house-sales over the last few years! For sure it has had something to do with all these vibrant events. The Art Walk organisation would like to give thanks to the municipality for providing their spaces for the Artwlk. We are also very pleased with the number of local businesses who have chosen to support this event. A huge ‘thank

46 The Grapevine

you’ must also go out to the volunteers who gave so much of their time, skills and efforts. We’d like to mention a few of our hard working volunteers: English artist, Mitch France who took care of the graphic design for the posters/ leaflets/ bio’s and built and maintained the website. German artist, Gerrit Oppelland Hampel who took care of Facebook promotion and Anne Konig, who was the contact person for the council and also for some of the sponsors. Also thanks to the hosts who offered their houses or gardens for the art shows. Of course the Art Walk organisation is happy with so many enthusiastic artists, musicians and theatre makers who made this 11th edition an unforgettable experience for many! Muchas gracias. Last but not least we’d like to thank Lieuwke Loth for her endless efforts to make it happen. She has dedicated much of her time, skills and energy to make it an event that’s added great value to the town and its people, the artists involved and all the art lovers..

From a small Walkabout she has created a big cultural event of which we all can be proud of! It has now inspired others to take the concept to their own villages, for example in Frigiliana and Torrox. Lieuwke has done the job now for 6 years. She has personally got a lot from the event and has loved the experience. It was Lieuwke’s pleasure to create something that has served the village. For now she has decided to give her time to other priorities. She has missed the right support, help and acknowledgement from certain parties and feels it is time to end her (free) efforts for this enormous project every year. The Art Walk which we have become accustomed to over the last 6 years will not take place in 2020. For the ones who love to look back at the Art Walk Lara Jayne Jackson is a filmmaker based in Canillas de Aceituno and made this 30 minutes film of the 11th edition in Competa: https://vimeo.com/365006067?fbcli d=IwAR3ejnMHu0tqVpKTiX6Lnow ghAFuV_b66mE7pLNUQmXuIO6x aTqi5bDvZnw

THINKING OF MOVING TO SPAIN Some Pro´s And Con´s To Help With Your Decision f you are thinking about moving to Spain, we've compiled a list of pros and cons of living in Spain to help with your decision.

I

in Madrid or Barcelona but lower in southern parts..

Moving to a new country may be a huge undertaking, but there are a lot of great reasons to do it. Whether you’re starting a new job, studying abroad, retiring, following family or a loved one or just looking for a new adventure, a new country might be where you find the home you’ve been looking for.

Pro: Spaniards Are Among the Nicest People in the World Con: If You're a Quiet Person, the Culture May Be a Bit of a Shock Spaniards, like most people from Southern Europe, love loud music, even late at night.

Lower Cost of Living Pro: Lower Cost of Living in Spain (it's relative) Be careful what you read. Most retirement resources can be overly positive and some ranking lists are misleading. For example Barcelona is 'expensive.' It is compared to more southern parts of Spain. Con: Rents & Real Estate Prices Can be High in Some Areas Rents and real estate are high but

Spaniards

Slower Pace of Life Con: Long Lines & Slow Service are a Part of Life in Spain Compared to the UK things seem to take forever, especially when it comes to business matters. There are queues everywhere and the Spanish seem to take it in their stride to stand around for hours just waiting - this can be very stressful if you are not accustomed to it. Pro: Once You Adjust to a Slower Pace of Living, It's a Blessing Many people who decide to move abroad are looking to slow down

and enjoy life. It takes time to adjust to the slower pace, but most expats say that once they do the rewards outweigh the negatives. For example one expat said “Some of the things that frustrated me are now what I appreciate. I enjoy the conversation I have with the people at the fruit store or the post office while I am waiting in line. I like the reliance on our own two feet and not using the car. I appreciate that the family is VERY important and everyone takes off Sunday to spend time with them," Spain's Beautiful Beaches & Weather Pro: Spain Has Amazing Weather, Beautiful Beaches and Coastal Cities Regardless of whether you end up in a coastal town or inland city, the weather in Spain will not disappoint. If you're looking for a coastal city, the options are endless. Con: Coastal Cities Can be Very

Crowded in Summer Like anywhere in the world, coastal cities and towns get crowded in summer. For any beach lover, that shouldn't be a surprise. Think of the summer season as a time to meet more Spaniards, travel inland for a break from the beach Family is a Priority in Spain Pro: Expat Families Will Appreciate Spain's FamilyFriendly Culture Typically the Spaniards priority is family. They have extended family nearby and visit quite often Con: If You're an Entrepreneur, The Family-Friendly Culture May be a Challenge Many Spaniards take most of their obligatory vacation days in August and some businesses even shut down for the month. Working in Spain or running a small business there, it may be a difficult thing to adjust to.

To advertise call 637 028 873

Property In Spain Pro: Properties in Spain are Less Expensive Than Many Other Cities in Europe. Con: Costs Involved in Buying Property in Spain. The costs involved is very expensive compared to UK, for example, an estate agent here takes 10% commission compared to 1.5% in UK. The Large Expat Population in Spain Pro: Expat Friends Can Be Incredibly Supportive Con: It Can be Hard to Immerse Yourself in the Spanish Culture When There are So Many Expats If you're looking for an authentic, local experience, you may find it more difficult to immerse yourself with so many expats around. In that case, rent a home or flat in an area that is not popular among expats, talk Spanish as often as possible and join local volunteer organizations to meet locals. These strategies can help.

However, don't be too quick to isolate yourself from expats. When times get tough and you're feeling homesick, facing a health problem or enduring some other challenge, expats can be your best source of help and support. Animals Pro Spain is super animalfriendly. If you have a dog and are thinking about living in Spain, go for it. There are lots of bars, restaurants and places which encourage you to bring your pet. Con People don't seem to be as obsessed with training their pets as the UK folk. This means that dogs will freely bark at any time of the day, evening or night. When deciding where to move, though, there are tons of factors to take into considerations. Every place is going to have pros and cons, and you need to be aware of both in order to make an informed choice about where you’re going to be happy living.

HAPPY FEET

An Interview with Ruth Lanslay, Foot Health Practitioner in Competa

S

ix months ago, I interviewed Ruth Lanslay of Happy Feet in Competa. She had only just moved to the area, both her home & clinic were yet to be fully renovated and she was both apprehensive and excited about what lay ahead. Today we are chatting in her lovely clinic. I’m sitting on the wonderfully comfortable patient chair which I can only guess wasn’t one of her cheapest purchases! The clinic is finished with a small waiting area and toilet facilities along with a room for herself and her patients. Here Ruth can privately take care, diagnose and treat abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Ruth can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems, including: toenail problems, such as thickened toenails, fungal nail infections or ingrown toenails. corns and calluses. So, the main question is how has the business progressed since we last spoke and has Ruth settled in? I knew when I asked her this question, I would get an honest answer. This was what I liked about her when we first met. She never exaggerated, she admitted

72 The Grapevine

when things were hard work but also showed true delight when her treatments made a difference to someone’s life. Her answer was again delivered with honesty, she never expected to make her fortune in Competa. The last 6 months have just about been slightly been better than she originally foresaw which is great news. Clients are now booking treatments on a regular basis and she is continually picking up new clients due to her advertising and reference through word of mouth. She expects the next 6 months to be once again on track or even better than what she had hoped for. Ruth didn’t have to get used to how she works as she is doing exactly what she did in the UK. The difference is the scheduling of her work, this has taken some getting used to. Clients book last minute appointments and her diary is rarely full at the beginning of the week but often is by the end of the week! Some of the changes Ruth has made over the last 6 months are she no longer has specific working hours; her appointment times are now more flexible to suit her client’s needs. Also, many of her clients are elderly and not agile

enough to reach her clinic so she will now agree to home visits. All appointments are scheduled by email, phone or Facebook of which all details are on the advert opposite I ask what a standard appointment is, for 25 euro Ruth cuts nails and removes the hard skin, often removing corns and calluses and discusses any problems and if time allows treats the problem then and there. What seemed really important was the advice she could give to look after your feet along with providing the necessary tools to help solve or alleviate issues such as inner soles, blocks or mouldings for support. Lastly how have Ruth and Dave settled in? They admitted the hardest thing was leaving family back in the UK , however a little UK family “fix” in January is planned which will help. They are settling in & have integrated into the Competa community, have joined walking groups and choirs and are happy here in the village and are really pleased that “Happy Feet” is working as planned and they are looking forward to the future ahead.

THE INTIMATE LIFE OF THE FIG Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

L

et's start the new year with a detailed look at a tree we all know well, but how intimately do you know it? The fig tree, ficus carica, is famed from the time of Adam and Eve but it really deserves a better image than 'useful to cover up private bits'. The wonderful Alan Bates' scene from Women in Love is nearer to the luscious voluptuousness of this magnificent fruit. At this time of the year the trees silvered-grey bark glows in the moonlight. On misty, dripping days, its sheer bulk and girth is a powerful image, like something out of Grimm's Tales. I almost like the tree more in winter than in summer but its big-lobed leaves are quite lovely and great for providing shade; its fruit – well

people have swooned for them. Native to the Middle East and north-western Asia, it is one of the members of the moraceae family which includes, of course, the mulberry. Figs were one of the first fruit trees cultivated by man. Relatively fast growing, they will reach 10m tall and almost as wide, are good on poor soil and can form a lovely shady arbour. They like to stretch and spread, so give them room to develop beautifully rather than try and pinch them into too small a space where they cannot flaunt their magnificence. Sunshine lovers, give them at least eight hours a day; they will become very drought resistant with age. It is commonly said that watering a fig tree ruins the flavour of the fruits. Don´t plant them over a tiled area

as falling fruits will be very messy! Bearing all that in mind, plant now and through the winter so that they are well established before the heat of next summer. The only other thing you need to decide is if it's to be green or black – a personal choice, though I always feel the black have a slightly stronger flavour. Fig trees are easy-care. No water, once established; no fertiliser and little or no pruning. Remove deadwood or a badlypositioned branch, but this is minor. Generally trouble free, they can get rust – a fungal infection that shows as reddishbrown spots on leaves. If it's really troublesome, apply a fungicide like neem oil or copper fungicide.

There are several magical things about the fig that you may not know. Firstly, it can bear two crops a year; the spring crop is known as brevas/brebas, thus named from the Latin 'bifera' meaning twice-producing. The first crop develops on the previous year's growth and fruiting is usually late May/early June. The autumn crop, ready from late September through to early November, forms on the current year's growth and the fruits are generally smaller. Whilst there are named varieties, they are difficult to find; simply look for brevales for two crops a year and higueras for single croppers, which will produce very large fruits.

are some 1000 of them – has evolved its very own species of pollinating fig wasp. How incredible is that? These wasps are tiny, less than 2mm long in most cases and these poor little creatures lead a short and rather unpleasant life! The female wasp crawls through a tiny natural hole in the bottom of the fig called an ostiole (from the Latin ostium, meaning opening). It's such a tight squeeze that she gets pretty beaten up, losing her wings, her antennae, and any other projecting bits! Her legs are pollen-coated and her abdomen is full of eggs. Once inside, she spreads both around liberally, simultaneously laying eggs in and fertilising the flowers. Then she dies and is absorbed into the fig Not many fruit trees will give you by a chemical known as ficin – it all adds to the flavour! The male two harvests a year, so that wasp is born wingless for he has makes a fig pretty special. But only two functions in life – to there is an even more amazing side to a fig. Read on if you're not impregnate a female and bite squeamish. Firstly, the fig we eat holes through the skin of the fig to create a tunnel for the baby is not strictly a fruit – it is the female wasps, now pregnant and flower (much like we eat pollen-dusted, to escape and look artichoke flowers and caper for a tree of the same species. Each of these internal a display of co-operation common flowers produces a single oneenough in the animal world, all seeded, hard shelled fruit called the male wasps tunnel to ensure achene and it is this that gives the fig its typical crunch when we that every female escapes; once outside the fig, the males die. eat it. So when we eat a fig, we are actually eating multiple fruits! If you're beginning to go off figs, The green or black orb we eat is don't! You haven´t inadvertently called a syconium, from the swallowed thousands of fig Greek sykon meaning fig. wasps, I promise. Read on. 70% of the wildlife within the rainforests depend upon their crop. They are a keystone species, without them there would be no birds, bats, monkeys, insects and many others. The fruits are sweet, high in energy and much sought after. To meet this demand, these trees can fruit several times a year. Over 80 million years the fig trees have evolved a system where each species fruits at a slightly different time – it prevents accidental cross-breeding and ensures that the seeds are eaten and dispersed instead of, perhaps, rotting on the trees when there is a glut. At any time of the year there will be figs, different types at different times. What a complex, intricate and magical life a fig tree has! May 2020, the start of a new decade, be magical for you too! HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2020, imagine that. Another decade begins and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) will soldier on doing the best we can to help the homeless, abandoned and/or abused animals in Nerja and its near environs. Despite a sense of always feeling overwhelmed, progress on the issue of animal rights and welfare has been made in recent years in Spain. Not from the politicians of course (aside from an exemplary few) but primarily from the under-40 Spaniards who appear to have a sense of justice, onscientiousness and compassion, certainly surpassing that of previous generations. The Costa Animal Society would encourage you to visit the website of the Partido Animalista PACMA the Spanish political party that “works for animal rights, environmental protection and social justice”. Unfortunately, the website is only in Spanish but you can always Google translate. They are at the forefront of the issue of animal rights in Spain and are growing quickly. The only way the issue of animal abuse is going to be solved is if the laws on the books are enforced and new laws enacted and that is what PACMA is all about Colin and Marjorie

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Marjorie and Colin for all of their years of service as both volunteers and committee members. The couple began helping CAS in 2002 and for more than 17 years they have raised funds at the Almuñecar Car Boot Sale, the Trapiche Market and have lent a helping set of hands at numerous Scruffs Dog Shows, Balls and various other events. Not to mention the numerous dogs and cats they have fostered and taken in over the years. We will miss your input and commitment in helping the animals and we hope you enjoy your well deserved retirement.

PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to give a big thanks to Mark and the staff at the Punta Lara Bar, as well as to all the participants in CAS quiz held there each month, for providing a fun atmosphere for the event. Most of the €230 (on average) raised each month goes towards feeding the street cats in our area. The next quiz will be held on 18 January at 7.30pm. Come on up to the Punta Lara Bar for a good evening of trivia. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced booking is recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673.
