It’s that time again: A New Year is upon us, which means new beginnings and the attempts to better ourselves via New Year Resolutions—only with all efforts likely to be abandoned by February. It’s the same story every year, so why should this year be any different? Some of us will vow to lose weight while others promise to save money. But do you have a plan? Do you have any specific goals on which to focus? What exactly will you do to ensure you are you are not falling off that New Year’s resolution bandwagon come springtime? One of the biggest reasons for these dropped resolutions is lack of a plan. On page 50 there are some tips to help you keep your New Year's resolutions this year. Personally I am not into New Year Resolutions that restrict or focus on giving up something. I tend to think that everything is about moderation with a blow out on something like wine or chocolate every so often. I think denying yourself of something for a period of time only makes you want it or think about it more! I would more likely look at the year ahead and perhaps set a goal like do a triathlon, travel somewhere different, learn to do a new sport, hobby or activity. Whatever your approach for 2018 good luck with your plan and wishing you all the best for the year ahead. Enjoy and Keep Reading The Editor

S NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

H

aving discovered the joys of French wine, caviar and truffles, China’s new rich are turning to a new gourmet delicacy to satisfy their demand for luxury goods from the west: Spain’s jamón ibérico, or Iberian ham. But demand is now threatening to outstrip supply, leaving Spaniards facing steep price rises in their most prized Christmas delicacy. The recent lifting of import restrictions has allowed top-of-the-range ham to find its “rightful place in the market, alongside caviar and truffles”, René Lemée, the head of exports for the famous Cinco Jotas brand, told El País newspaper. The Chinese, pork lovers par excellence, have now been seduced by jamón ibérico. The problem is that the best ham takes years to produce and, as demand outstrips supply, it is pushing up the price by as much as 10%. A 7.5kg leg sells at between €150 and €600 (£135-£540). Spanish ham comes in many forms, but to be defined as jamón ibérico de bellota (acorn-fed Iberian ham), which is what the Chinese want, it must first come from Iberian blackfoot pigs, or from 50% crossbreeds. These pigs must then spend several months of the year roaming the dehesa, a pasture planted with oaks, feeding on grass and acorns. During the last few months before being slaughtered they must live exclusively on this diet. Not only are there relatively small areas of dehesa – mostly in north-west and western Spain – but each pig needs about two hectares (five acres) to fulfil its needs. Once

slaughtered, the animals’ legs are plunged into vats of salt and hung and dry-cured over a range of temperatures for a minimum of 36 months, with the best hams cured for about 48 months. “It’s inevitable that the price in Spain is going to rise,” said Roberto Batres, the director of Shanghai de Delaiberia Gold, which exports ham, wine and olive oil to China.

panish police have discovered a 12-year-old boy hidden inside a car dashboard. The child was suffering with numb limbs and breathing difficulties after being crammed into the tiny space, to cross the Moroccan border into Spain. Reportedly, he is from Guinea, West Africa - though he has no official documentation – and has been given treatment in a centre in Purisima. The 65-year-old driver, thought to be Moroccan, was arrested by the Guardia Civil after a heartbeat sensor detected the boy in Melilla, Morocco.

THREE KINGS DAY 6th January - DĂa de los Reyes Magos

O

n 5th January Spain celebrates the end of Christmas with a great party where everybody gives and receives presents. It is to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men - Melchior Caspar and Balthazar - to the city where Jesus was born. In the same way that the Three Wise Men gave gifts to baby Christ, here they share out presents amongst children around Spain - in fact; they are more popular than Santa Claus. There are lots of processions of the Three Wise Men in each city, the children go along with their parents to see the kings and receive sweets from them. Before going to sleep, children put some milk and biscuits next to the Christmas tree for the Three Kings and some water for their camels. They also leave out their best pair of shoes to be filled with presents.

10 The Grapevine

On the next day, 6th January children wake up and see how many presents they have received. If they have been good, they will find a lot of good presents but if they have been naughty they will find coal. These days, the coal is actually made of sugar, but some years ago it was real coal. During this day, all families enjoy a piece of roscon (a sugar-frosted fruit-filled bread) for breakfast tradition says that the person who finds a novelty such as a coin, in his or her portion will have good luck for the next year. Both young and old enjoy opening their presents on this day, but sadly it also marks the end of Christmas. This celebration itself stems from the New Testament where it is stated that the kings, Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthasar, traveled by night all the way from the farthest

confines of the Earth to bring gifts to Jesus, whom they recognized as the Son of God. As well as regal, the Three Kings are depicted as wise men, whose very wisdom is proved by their acknowledgement of Christ's divine status. Arrived from three different directions, the kings followed the light provided by the star of Bethlehem, which reportedly lingered over the manger where the Virgin Mary gave birth for many days. In 1885, the Spanish government called for a parade to mark the very special holiday. While the traditional scriptures tell of gifts of myrrh and gold and incense, these days the Kings are more prone to bringing candies and more practical gifts. It remains, however, a beloved tradition and also the longest standing parade in Spain.

While the cold is in full swing, try drinking potato peeling broth. The peelings should be half an inch thick, boiled it for about half an hour then strained and cooled, taken twice a day. After the fever goes, a low calorie raw fruit and vegetable diet can be attempted, although you may not feel much like eating at this point. Raw juices and herb teas will also help. olds appear superficially similar to the 'flu, but are generally less severe. Common in the colder seasons, respiratory passage inflammation, irritation of the nose and throat, runny eyes, and of course fevers, chills and muscle aches are typical symptoms of the common cold. In extreme cases, a bad cold may even cause sinusitis or congestion of the chest, which can be particularly distressing for the very young and very old. The differences between a cold and flu are fairly easy to spot - flu usually causes a headache, fever, heavy fatigue and general aches - these are rare in true colds. On the other hand, a cold usually involves a runny nose and a sore throat both rare in flu. Whatever you do, the symptoms will last between 7 and 14 days (including an incubation period of between 1 and 3 days). The Sierra Nevada ski resort is located right in the heart of the Sierra Nevada National Park.

and prepared by the local authorities every year, this assumed Income Tax is operated on a self-assessment system and paid to directly to the Tax office. This means that Non-residents have the obligation to prepare, calculate and pay their own Deem Income Tax every year. The Tax Returns form to be submitted is called, Form 210, and the period for submitting this declaration is a calendar year, from 1st January to 31st December. Any Annual Deem Income Tax due for the tax year 2016 must be paid before the 31st December 2017, so you are still plenty of time to comply with the Tax laws.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Annual Income Taxes for Non-Resident Property Owners In Spain

I

f you haven't made an annual Tax declaration as a RESIDENT in Spain, but you own a property here, then you are obliged to make a Tax Declaration as a NONRESIDENT each year before the end of December. A typical case is a couple who live permanently outside Spain (in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany or any other country), but own a second home in Spain which is used for their holidays, etc. The Spanish Inland Revenue automatically assume a benefit from the property, to cover the assumption that a property owner is using the infrastructure in Spain, i.e. roads, airports, public services etc., and therefore, should be contributing to the Spanish tax system. They have developed, a self assessment, NON RESIDENT TAX DECLARATION to cover this situation, called Deem Income Tax.

24 The Grapevine

Although an owner may not receive any real income or rent from the property, the law presumes an income of 1'1% or 2 %, of the “Cadastral” value, of the property, (the rate used depends on whether the “Cadastral” value has or has not been modified and updated), and the resulting amount is the assumed income for the enjoyment and benefits resulting from owning a second property. This assumed income is then taxed at a calculated rate of 19% for residents in EU, Iceland and Norway and 24% for the rest of the countries. Many non-residents who live for less than 183 days in Spain and therefore are not fiscal residents, but are owners of second residences in Spain, are not aware of their tax obligations because they have never been made aware of the Annual Deem Income Taxes. As unlike the local IBI taxes, which are calculated

Ignorance of the Law is not an excuse for not paying this tax, so we are informing any NONRESIDENTS who own real estate property in Spain that they should be aware of their tax obligations, and should get professional assistance for preparing, and calculating their annual tax, to ensure that the form 210, is submitted on time. Otherwise, they could be fined in the future by the Inland Revenue. For further information, advice or assistance on this Spanish Deem Income tax, please do not hesitate to contact us by Tel 952 901 225 or e-mail at mail@axarquiasolicitors.com. We will be pleased to study your particular case and explain how this tax applies to you. NO MORE NEW - YEAR RESOLUTIONS A Down to Earth Look at New Year Resolutions.

E

very year someone asks you. 'What's your New Year's Resolution?' Well, not to make any spur or the minute resolutions is a good one. Not to make the same damn resolution, which I am just about guaranteed to break is another. Never again am I going to promise anyone that I will give up chocolate. Or take up a sport. Or decobweb my bike and go out cycling. Resolutions are just too easy to break. Why do we wait till New Year? There's nothing magical about this date. Besides, what a terrible time to decide how to transform yourself – half-abottle of cava the worse for wear, in a silly singing crowd, wearing a tinsel crown and certain you can still dance like you used to, isn't the setting for

28 The Grapevine

a mature decision on lifestyle change! I suppose it does no harm to make resolutions, if you think them through before hand. Working out what you want from the-rest-of-your-life and how to get there makes sense. But it's not just what to change, but why. Giving up chocolate is an obvious idiocy: even without a choc-addiction as strong as mine, giving-up is a doingnothing, a miserable negative reminding you that you've banned yourself from fun: bound to fail. Apparently, the commonest resolutions include: 1. Stopping smoking 2. Losing weight 3. Drinking less 4. Getting out of debt 5. Taking more exercise. All of which I understand. But it's so negative: stopping,

losing, less. No, a resolution worth its salt aims at gain. And has a reason. 'I resolve to make and eat three really yummy fruit desserts a week instead of chocolate' – now, that has a chance! 'I'm going to practise tennis so I can beat my smug next-door neighbour who thinks he's Rafael Nadal'! Or how about 'I'm going to go walking so I can chill out, unwind, and enjoy the countryside and the views'. The commonest resolution, the most popular in both the USA and the UK, and the most broken, is to give up smoking. Of the top five resolutions it is probably the hardest to keep, with the physical addiction as well as the ingrained habit to beat. I suppose the advantage to this resolution is that you might be doing less drinking after the yearly Christmas and New Year binge: refusing the

To advertise call 637 028 873

proffered ciggie is much harder after a couple of whiskey-andcokes in you. But perhaps, also, too many smokers are trying to give up because it is a 'good thing to do', or to please their family. That vague thought isn't much of a motivator. Think instead of the daily advantages. These include an improved sense of taste, smell and touch: food, drink and sex are all more pleasurable for smokers! Also important as we all feel the economic pinch is the huge amount of money freed up to spend on other things. But don't resolve to give up smoking: resolve to take up living! Once you've made your resolution the tough part starts. The advice for keeping resolutions is, along with deciding on your goal before that booze-sozzled New Year midnight, that you don't choose

To advertise call 637 028 873

something you've failed with before, or at least you chose a different approach. You should also try to keep just one or two specific resolutions, because if you have a list as long as your arm you've no hope with any of them. 'Bring about world peace', always on my theoretical wishlist sounds great but isn't very practical. Funnily enough, psychologists recommend different tactics for sticking to resolutions for men and women. For men, having a really specific goal is essential. Women can chose to 'lose weight' (any weight) but a man is more likely to succeed with 'lose half a stone by Easter'. Just why this is I can't guess Women, on the other hand, should tell family and friends all about their resolution. The psychologists presume that this

works because women get lots of help from their “social support networks, but I know different. It's the power of shame. It's so embarrassing when yet another friend asks you, for the third year in a row, how the diet's going, or whether you're keeping up the aerobics, or if you are still doing meditation. It's not good, after boasting about your Tour-deFrance ambitions, having to admit that the bike is still in the shed with a flat tyre and no, you still haven't managed to get rid of the Christmas-induced spare tyre round you middle. After that experience, you will be sure to only tell friends and family about resolutions you are certain to keep. So no more I'm-giving-upchocolate emails from me! Rose Jones

TAMBORRADA Spains Loudest Festival

T

he Tamborrada is one of the loudest festivals in Spain, held in San Sebastian on the 19th and 20th of January each year. Hundreds of drummers, parade the streets making as much noise as is humanly possible. This famous street party starts around midnight on the 19th January and is one of the most anticipated fiestas held in the Basque country during the year. Great fun and an impressive spectacle, and one where ear drums come in very handy. The Tamborrada is San Sebastian’s most important festival and the entire city gathers together regardless of the cold or rain. More than 15,000 Donostiarras (the people of San Sebastian as they are called in Basque) that belong to over 100 bands, actively take part in the drumming.

38 The Grapevine

Where does this seemingly strange celebration come from? It goes back several hundred years to the time of the Peninsular War, when Napoleon’s troops took over San Sebastian and a large portion of the city was burned to the ground. During this time of occupation, it was typical for the women to fetch water at one of the city’s two fountains. All the while, French troops marched around the city, banging on their drums. No one is quite sure who started it, but soon the women began to beat on the buckets as to mock the French occupiers. With time, this show of defiance grew and began to have a deeper meaning for the city’s inhabitants. Culinary clubs (sociedades gastronómicas) are partly responsible for the event’s success. They formed many of the bands and this is one of the reasons why many of the drummers dress in chef uniforms. Other typical dress

includes soldier uniforms and women wearing traditional Basque clothing. The Tamborrada has become San Sebastian’s largest party, however, it is much more than that. It is a celebration of what it means to be a Donostiarra and a way for the citizens to connect with their identity. The celebration is also about overcoming tragedy, coming together as one and finding happiness. This is best demonstrated in the “March of San Sebastian” that is played throughout the 24 hours of the Tamborrada. Of all the festivals held every year in Spain, the Tamborrada in San Sebastian is the loudest. On January 20th at midnight, crowds pack Constitution Square, where the mayor raises the city’s flag to start 24 hours of non-stop drumming.

COMPETA HIKES AND COMPETA HOLIDAYS Another year at Finca Los Pinos

F

or the last couple of years I have spoken to Competa Hikes/Competa Holidays in the January edition of The Grapevine. So in true tradition this month, I look back on last year’s Interview with Sarah Mills to see if they have achieved what they set out to do last year and indeed how they see the business moving forward throughout 2018. Sarah and her husband David were both born and bred in Africa and love the outdoors. They have a global perspective on everything and Competa Hikes is not only their business, it is their passion. They truly want to bring the historical, cultural and natural value of this region to as many people as they can while maintaining responsible tourism and protecting the environment. They also naturally bring a little of their own African culture as well as their experience from their global travels, to their

46 The Grapevine

walking lodge. One of their commitments was to build a Luxury African Safari Tent high into their grounds with luxurious furnishings, unfortunately due to the planning permission process this is still in the pipeline but they still hope to fulfil this dream. More successful was their second project a Walking Centre. Their focus is not just their own business but to provide walkers from all over the world an exclusive guide to all that they can enjoy in the Axarquia. From multilingual seminars and education sessions, to guided walking, specialist accommodation across the region and other adventures. Throughout 2017, amongst other things, they have done a total of seven Walking and Yoga retreats, each time catering for their clients on an all - inclusive basis. This was in partnership with Inez from Competa Yoga and her husband Emanuel. Sarah and David really enjoy this partnership where each of them

bring a special quality of their own to the retreats. They have also hosted three Walking and Spanish Language Retreats of which 50 % of the clients were repeat booking’s from the previous year and the same again have booked for 2018. These combination walking holidays are extremely successful and as such, this year Sarah and David have had had to convert their library log cabin into an Industrial Kitchen in order to fully cater for these large groups on an all - inclusive basis. Over the next year they hope to expand the area outside the Industrial Kitchen to create a terrace with outdoor decking. This will allow them to serve clients directly from the kitchen if a small number require catering. Also, the staff could do with a nicer area to take more relaxed breaks when catering for a large number at the finca. Other combination Holidays that are popular are walking and Painting, Walking and Spanish wine tasting and Walking and

Spanish Cooking. There are further holidays available such as Walking and Bird Watching, Walking and Creative Writing and Walking and Photography For more information on their courses take a look on www.competaholidays.com Sarah and David always use local Staff when they need extra help and select from both the Spanish and expat community. They pride themselves on using both local produce and local resources and are always keen to support local fund raising events by providing prizes such as a free weekends accommodation and free guided walks. In addition to all this they are also keen to focus on educating at grassroots level. For this reason they regularly organise free Children’s walks which have generated a lot of interest from Spanish families both locally and further afield and with inquires coming from the coast such as Rincon, Malaga and Torre del

Mar. The children walks are focused on both educating about the environment and on fun and then afterwards with quizzes, prizes and if warm enough, a swim, followed by a big paella. Personally, I have attended one of these walks with my two 14 year olds and they had a fabulous day out. During the months of July and August Sarah and David are usually fully booked at the finca with large families and groups and their combination and all inclusive holidays are replaced with flamenco nights and wine tasting at night and daytime activities such as kayaking, trip to the waterfalls and river walking. Even the heat of the summer months doesn’t seem to slow Sarah and David down! So, can there be possibly more in store for 2018! Sarah explained they plan to have more children’s walks, a bit more refurbishment and they are looking at an Indoor Yoga Area so retreats can be organised into

the colder months. Finally, she was quite keen to thank The Grapevine as she felt the publicity had really helped create knowledge of what they do, who they are and that the advertising had helped promote their day tour walking club, especially to those readers’ on the coast. Sarah and David look forward to the year ahead and hope in 2018 they will both welcome back old clients and gain new ones to them a holiday experience they won’t forget David and Sarah Mills Competa Holidays Competa Hikes & Finca Los Pinos www.competaholidays.com www.competahikes.com Tel: (+34) 608 572 182 el: (+34) 619 175 649 T Tel: (+44) (0)7793 857787

The Propert y Feature

Propert y sales and prices in Spain are forecast to rise in 2018 as long as there are no sudden economic surprises or changes to the mortgage market. Prices for resales and new builds are expected to have increased by 5.8% over the fourth quarter of last year. The estimated numbers of properties expected to be sold in Spain in 2018 is 526,000 – a 9.3% increase on the 481,000 home sales likely to be recorded in 2017. This would be the first time the half-a-million threshold has been broken since 2008, and is nearly double 2013’s figure when just 285,000 homes were sold.

PORT

A Magnificent Sweet Red Wine ort is a fortified sweet red wine that is considered the sweetest of any type of red wine. (It should also be noted that Port can be dry and white, so one must take care to read the labels!)

P

shipped – Porto. While many would consider the only true Port to come from Portugal (just as the only true champagne comes from France), it is also made in America, Argentina, Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa.

As a fortified wine, brandy has been added to the Port during the fermentation process, resulting in a higher alcohol content – around 17 – 20%. This process of adding brandy to wine began when ship crews on long voyages of several months, or more, found that the addition of alcohol to their wine barrels prevented the wine from going bad. The process continues today, though not for the same reasons. Today, Port is matured in either sealed glass bottles, or wooden barrels.

Sweet red Port is generally viewed as a dessert wine, but it can also be served as an aperitif, or as an after dinner drink. Due to its high alcohol content, the Portuguese serve Port in very small four-ounce wine glasses. Then, they only fill the glass halfway!

Port originated in Portugal and the grapes are from the Douro Valley. The wine takes its name from the Portuguese city from which it was

There are three styles of sweet red Port: Ruby Port, Tawny Port, and Vintage Port. Ruby Port is, as its name suggests, a deep, rich red color. It does not need to be decanted and is served best at room temperature. As a dessert wine, Ruby Port pairs well with fruity desserts, or rich, creamy desserts.

Tawny Port is a lighter color that Ruby Port with categories of ten, twenty, thirty, and over forty years. Tawny Port does not need to be decanted and can be served at room temperature, or slightly cooler. It may be served after dinner, or with desserts. Fruity desserts, rich and creamy desserts, or milk chocolate are excellent compliments to Tawny Port. Vintage Port tends to be the lightest in color due to the length of aging. It represents only 2% of all Port produced and in Portugal, a "vintage" year is declared about every three to five years. Vintage Port is considered to be the very best. It does need to be decanted by using a small funnel with a strainer. It should be served at room temperature as an after dinner drink, or with the dessert as a dessert wine. It pairs well with fruity desserts, rich and creamy desserts, or dark chocolate.

3.Add split carrots, split parsnip, halved onions, and garlic to Dutch oven and cook, turning occasionally, until lightly browned, about 4 minutes; lower heat if browned bits on bottom of Dutch oven threaten to burn.

RICH AND FLAVORFUL GUINNESS BEEF STEW WITH POTATOES RECIPE Ingredients 1 cup (250ml) homemade chicken stock or low-sodium broth (see note above) 4 packets unflavored powdered gelatin (3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon; 30g) (see note above) 4 tablespoons (60ml) vegetable oil, divided 3 pounds (1.25kg) whole boneless beef chuck roast, cut into 3 steaks Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 1/4 pounds carrots (500g; about 3 large carrots), 1/2 pound (250g) peeled and split lengthwise, 3/4 pound (350g) cut into large dice (about 1 1/2 cups) 6 ounces parsnips (175g; about 2 small), half peeled and split lengthwise, half cut into large dice (about 1/2 cup) 1 pound yellow onions (500g; about 4 medium), half peeled and split in half through the root, half cut into large dice (about 1 cup) 4 medium cloves garlic, lightly crushed 1/4 cup (60ml) espresso or strong brewed coffee 1 ounce (30g) bittersweet chocolate 2 (15-ounce) cans Guinness Draught beer (900ml) 1 bouquet garnis (about 4 sprigs thyme, 3 sprigs parsley, and 1 bay

leaf, tied together with kitchen twine) 1 tablespoon (15ml) Asian fish sauce 1 tablespoon (15ml) soy sauce 1 tablespoon (15ml) Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons (20g) all-purpose flour 8 ounces small waxy potatoes (225g; about 20), such as baby Yukon Golds Minced flat-leaf parsley leaves and tender stems, for garnish Directions 1.Preheat oven to 300°F. Pour chicken stock into a medium bowl and sprinkle gelatin evenly all over surface, allowing each packet's worth of gelatin to soak up stock before sprinkling next one on (if the gelatin clumps instead of dissolving evenly, you can use a blender to fix it). Set aside. 2.In a large Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons (30ml) oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Season beef all over with salt and pepper and add to Dutch oven. Cook, turning occasionally, until beef is well browned on 2 sides, about 10 minutes. Transfer beef to a rimmed baking sheet.

4.Scrape chicken stock and all gelatin into Dutch oven. Add coffee, chocolate, Guinness, bouquet garnis, fish sauce, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer, then lower heat to maintain simmer. Meanwhile, cut beef into 2-inch chunks and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add flour and stir until beef is evenly coated in a floury paste. Add beef and any accumulated juices to Dutch oven. Transfer to oven, cover with lid partially open, and cook for 1 hour, stirring every 30 minutes. Add potatoes and continue to cook until beef is starting to become tender, about 30 minutes longer. 5.Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat remaining 2 tablespoons (30ml) oil. Add diced carrot, parsnip, and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Set aside. 6.Remove stew from oven. Using tongs, fish out and discard large pieces of carrot, parsnip, and onion. Discard bouquet garnis. Using a ladle, skim off and discard accumulated fat on surface. Add reserved sautĂŠed diced vegetables to stew, return to oven, and cover with lid slightly cracked. Continue to cook until beef and potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes longer, removing lid for last 25 minutes. 7.Remove stew from oven. If serving right away, skim off any additional fat from surface. Season with salt and pepper, if needed. Allow to cool slightly before serving, then serve topped with parsley. If making ahead, cool down stew, then chill in refrigerator; remove solid fat cap from surface once fully chilled. Reheat stew on the stovetop or in a low oven.

BURNING CALORIES TO LOSE WEIGHT A Little Help with a New Year Resolution to loose weight!

I

ncrease in calories always lead to an increase in weight. A lot of people exercise a lot but still they look fat. Most of them get frustrated and stop exercising, while others keep on exercising but with no good results. What can be the reason for this? The only answer to this problem is that you are not burning enough amounts of calories. Your exercise is fine but the problem is with the amount of food you are eating. Exercising can make you exhausted and you need food to restore your strength. You can reduce the amount of calories by two way, first is to take in less calories and the second is to burn more calories. Taking less amount of food can have a major impact on a person’s health and that’s not recommended at all. The only option left is to burn more calories than you take in. this can be done by one way only and that is to do more exercise. Its not difficult all you need to do

80 The Grapevine

is spend a bit more time on exercising and that’s it. Let’s suppose that you exercise daily for 25 minutes, now increase this time to 40 minutes. If you exercise for 4 days now increase it to six days. You don’t need to eat less only work more. This way you will be burning more calories than you are getting in and you will lose weight in just a couple of weeks. This will help you to burn calories at a much faster rate and hence you will lose weight. If you still want to increase the burning of calories than you should do the following. 1. Eat in small amounts and eat two or three times a day. Don’t eat large amount of food at a single time. This way you will have small intakes of calories and you will burn more. 2. Increase your exercise time, if you have the habit of exercising once a day then start working two times a day. 3. Give at a couple of hours between your workout sessions.

This will give you the much needed strength. 4. Join a training program or get a personal trainer. You can always ask a friend to help you out. 5. Take natural nutrition’s, this will increase your endurance and you will get more time to spend on exercising. 6. Try two or three different types of exercises. If it’s possible for you go out for swimming or jogging. It will take some time to be effective so don’t get frustrated or anything. This is much better than your previous sessions and you will see the results very soon. Always remember the key to losing weight here is to burn more calories. The much faster you can burn them the much faster you will lose weight. You can always search the internet to find out the amount of calories you need and the right food to cover that up.

Even though it’s winter season but don’t forget the sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15, it is a must and don’t stop applying it. They are not just for the summer time, the winter sun is damaging as well! Avoid having baths with hot water and stop the superhot showers. The hot water breaks the lipid barriers in the skin which leads to the further loss of moisture from the skin. Instead of hot water baths use lukewarm baths.

WINTER BEAUTY TIPS Hydrate and Moisturise

W

inter is indeed a beautiful season with all the sweat and botheration away making it a beautiful season, it is surely the time to get out and have fun outdoors. It is the time to bid farewell to all the running spoiled makeup due to sweat and oil. It brings out the beautiful faces with the beautiful weather! the moisture of the hydrated skin as well. This is why dry, flaky skin is the highlight of the season. In a dry environment, water is lost from the keratinocytes – or skin cells – leaving skin feeling sore and chapped, it dries the natural oils. Winter, therefore, becomes the season of skin problems, so, here are 10 beauty tips to arm the skin for the battle against winters! Although you can’t help your skin losing the moisture but you can keep it hydrated still and protect it from the harshness, therefore, moisturize your skin well. Apply moisturizer and reapply it to keep the skin hydrated. Give your body a good moisture bath after the shower and before going to bed daily and help it recover. Apply lip balm before stepping out and reapply it again to prevent the chapped lips.

Honey is not only beneficial to include in the diet in winters but also for the beauty regime! Just add honey to it! Apply a honey and lemon or only honey as a face pack or on other dry body parts and see the magic. Honey is the natural moisturizer and not only does it moisturize but it also adds glow. Curd away the dryness! Applying curd pack or massaging the face and hands with curd would replenish the moisture level but will also sweep away all the dirt and leave it fresh, supple, and hydrated. Don’t forget to exfoliate the dead skin away. Layer it up! As much as possible keep your hand and feet covered to avoid the chilling winds to rob the skin of its moisture. And don’t forget to apply a good moisturizer or oil before layering it up. This would leave the skin supple and protected! Samaira khatri

Apply coconut oil or virgin olive oil every night before hitting the bed.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Seeds From Heaven

I

'm sure that many of you will remember the huge fire that swept across the top of Cómpeta almost three and a half years ago. More than 200 hectares of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama were burnt up; many people had to leave their homes. It was an environmental disaster but, very luckily, no-one was hurt. What did hurt was people's hearts. Some lost centenary olive trees, ancient vineyards, crops and plants that they loved. We helped with the clearing of gardens; it was filthy work but the smell was the hardest thing to cope with. That acrid burnt odour penetrated everywhere and hung around for weeks. Every breeze stirred ashes again. We tend to forget that, in a fire, so much that makes our lives comfortable and pleasurable disappears. Practical things like electricity, water, telephones and internet, expensive but replaceable within a reasonable time frame. Ancient plantings and beautiful gardens take longer; and the hillsides of the National Park still look remarkably bare. Dry winters have hindered natural regrowth. So I was delighted to see and hear

In this instance, they even incorporated citronella oil to repel insects which may eat the seeds before they have a chance to germinate. Since October last year local schools have been making bombs! Special workshops were held to show the children, and their families, how to make them; over 700 children, 1000 people in all, throughout the province have participated and been taught the importance of reducing erosion, re-planting to reduce CO2 emissions, regreening the area and restoring the eco-system in the fight against climate change. The clay pellets were formed as discs, rather than the usual balls, for a more even distribution so that they would not roll deep down into the gulleys. Under controlled laboratory conditions the germination success is rated at around 80%. Until now this method, within Andalucía, has only been tried in the Guadalhorce Valley and the Sierras of Mijas and in both cases

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH By the time you read this we will be in 2018 and in need of rest and recuperation after the Christmas festivities. However, for some of us it is time to start thinking about activities and events for the rest of the year. Although our ultimate aim is to raise funds for the RBL, we like to think we are making fundraising into enjoyment for our members and friends. As with all charities, we depend greatly on support from the public and we are fortunate in having many faithful members and friends who give their time as well as money and in 2017 we managed to raise a wonderful €10,000 for the Poppy Appeal. There is not enough space here for me to mention all those who helped raise this sum but I would like to mention Kevin in Competa who filled his first Poppy Appeal box in 24 hours and then continued his one man campaign to raise an outstanding 300 euros! This is quite amazing for a small branch like ours, but gives all of us a sense of doing something very worthwhile. So to all who helped in any way...A BIG THANK YOU. This year apart from our monthly lunches we hope to hold different events to mark our 30 year anniversary and 100 years since the end of the WW1. All our events will be advertised and open to anyone who wishes to come

LA GALERIA December 9th saw around 65 members of the Andalusian Classic Car Club descend on La Galeria at Villa Olivia near Periana. Decked in Christmas attire the members enjoyed mulled wine, cakes and mince pies while admiring the art and sculptures on display. A few people gathered to see the beautiful collection as they motored down to the gallery. Gallery owner Wendy Holmes commented It is funny we are just 1 year old and are amazed at how far we have developed in that year.” Now covering 2 galleries a General and Private Galley the gallery offers art and sculptures for all budgets starting at as little as 25 euros and escalating to 10,000 euros there is something for everyone to see.

Happy News Tim is growing up fast in kennels but he will be meeting his new family in Norway this month as soon as a flight can be arranged. Tim was rescued from the Nerja campo back in October but it took nearly three months to get him prepared for his journey due to strict regulations in Norway.

CAS NEWS

W

ith the death of Karen O'Brien in November, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has lost one of its longest-serving and most active members. Karen and her husband Mike joined CAS not long after moving to Spain from the UK and volunteered their time to the charity for ten years, much of which was spent serving on the committee. Despite having three cats of their own, Karen became known as CAS's “Cat Lady,” always willing to take in any waif or stray who needed a home. Many a time, she and Mike were called out at all hours to rescue a family of kittens which had been cruelly dumped. The feline lodgers were then cared for until they were ready to go to a new, permanent home. Karen was also involved in many of CAS's fund-raising events, in particular the annual dinner dances which raised so much cash for the charity. While Mike went out to find sponsors, she was left with the huge task of pulling it all together. From booking the band to

choosing the balloon table decoration, her attention to detail ensured that each event was a success. Even after she handed the reins over to new volunteers, someone else, Karen was still willing to help organise and advise. Karen's forthright input to the running of CAS will be sorely missed. She will also be greatly missed by the members ... and by the cats. Punta Lara CAS Quiz Start the New Year off on the right paw with the Costa Animal Society (CAS) end of the year quiz being held at the Punta Lara Bar on January 19 at 7.30pm. Join Quiz Hostess Laura and test your knowledge of trivial January facts and interesting events from 2017. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced booking is recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673.

He had to receive two rabies vaccinations 21-28 days apart and then had to wait another month for a blood test, which took another two weeks for the results to come back. If all goes well Tim will be in his forever home by the end of the January. CAS Cat Corner Ready for adoption: These three stunning beauties, all female, were first seen with their mother who days later was later found dead, believed from poisoning. Yes, you read that correctly: poisoning. By the time this article goes to press I may have already adopted all three of these gorgeous kittens. However, in the spirit of sharing the love I'll hold off until the end of January. If you can imagine welcoming any or all of these girls into your home, please contact the Costa Animal Society (CAS) through our website, www.casnerja.org, or our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/casnerja
