Editors Note..... I hope you have had a great Christmas and The Grapevine wishes you all a happy and prosperous 2011. As I write this it is a week before Christmas and we have our usual anxiety over whether we will get back to the UK for Christmas to join our relatives. It seems every year snow shuts the UK down and costs the country millions. It is almost as if snow is totally unexpected by the chaos it creates. We are due to return in time for New Years Eve and Kings Day so the kids get the best of both worlds, a traditional English and Spanish Christmas. Front Cover: Sierra Nevada

Kings Day on the 6th of January is a lovely affair in my village of Cómpeta. On the night before, the three kings have a procession around the village, starting around 5.00pm and finishing in the Plaza. They throw out sweets to all the following children and their parents! On Kings Day itself there is a children’s play area erected in the Plaza Almijara including a bouncy castle and other children’s play activities. After the 6th it is back to school and back to work with the Christmas and New Year festivities over with for another year. The Grapevine has some great plans for 2011 turn to page 60 and 61 to find out more.

News in Spain CATRAL MURDER SUSPECT CLAIMS HE DOESN'T REMEMBER KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND A woman has been found dead in a warehouse on a Málaga industrial estate in what seems to be another case of domestic violence The man arrested in Catral for the fatal stabbing of his ex girlfriend has been remanded to custody after two hours of questioning by the investigating judge. The charge is premeditated murder, for which Diario Información reports the accused could spend up to 20 years behind bars. He also faces up to a year for violating the distancing order which had been in place since August. In further information from La Verdad newspaper, the 23 year old, Cristian H.M. is reported to have told the judge that he has no memory of killing his ex girlfriend, Estefanía L. He admitted to a fight and said he remembers seeing a knife but, according to the report, did not admit to using the knife against his ex.On the Costa del Sol, a new case of suspected domestic violence is under investigation in Málaga, where a Chinese woman was found dead in a lingerie warehouse in the Guadalhorce industrial estate. El Mundo newspaper said the 27 year old, J.C., had arrived in Spain on holiday and was spending the nights in the warehouse with her boyfriend, who is also from China, and who is now being sought by police. The suspected murder weapons, a hammer and a cutter knife, were found lying beside her body. EL MUNDO NEWSPAPER HIGHLIGHTS CASE OF 100 NORTHERN IRELAND VICTIMS IN COSTA DEL SOL REAL ESTATE FRAUD El Mundo reported on the case of a hundred or so purchasers from Northern Ireland who between them paid 6 million € in deposits in the years 2005 and 2006 for 350 apartments in the Estepona Beach and Country Club, via the British real

estate company, Ocean View Properties. The newspaper brought some 70 families of those affected to a meeting in Belfast where the Marbella lawyer, Antonio Flores, from the company lawbird.com explained that the urbanisation was promoted by the Spanish company Sun Golf Desarrollos Inmobiliarios S.L. The lawyer explained that there was a ‘commercialisation agreement’ between Sun Golf and Ocean View, under which the latter was to pay commissions to the former for the collection of deposits. Ocean View also found lawyers in both Spain and the U.K. to represent them and recommend the Lawbird now has the idea of starting legal action in the Estepona courts, although they have not ruled out starting proceedings in the National Court because the single administrator of Sun Golf, Ricardo Miranda Miret, has his headquarters in Madrid, and the Ocean View representatives are based in Britain. Similar frauds to the Estepona development are alleged to have been carried out in Morocco and the Dominican Republic. OWNERS OF ILLEGAL PROPERTY IN ANDALUCÍA WANT TO SEE A REGIONAL 'AMNESTY’ Owners of illegal properties in Andalucía are uniting in their efforts to demand an amnesty for their homes. They are following the example seen in neighbouring Extremadura. The association of illegal property owners in Mijas, Málaga, are promoting the idea of forming a common platform against the administration. The Junta de Andalucía has said nothing can be done until the extent of the problem is made clear, and so they are currently engaged in carrying out an inventory which so far revealed some 100,000 such properties across the region.

Say What You Mean! fter my rant elsewhere in this month's mag regarding spelling and grammar it's time to have a go at those who just can't say it how it is, those who just can't talk straight. For me as a Yorkshireman I say what I like and I like what I bloody well say!

A

was at significant variance with the facts”, or my favourite, “terminological inexactitude” have come about to avoid the “L” word. So what other things are they saying and what exactly do they mean? Here's a quick guide to some of them.

The biggest culprit of not saying what they mean or using ambiguous language is everybody's favourite type of person, our illustrious leaders, politicians. In fact it's fair to say they can't open their mouths without an untruth coming out. Bizarrely, the one thing politicians try to outdo each other in i.e.lying, is the one thing they aren't allowed to call or accuse each other of in Parliament. As a result a new type of language has developed over time so that during 'Punch and Judy Hour', also known as Prime Minister's Questions, politicians can effectively call each other liars without actually saying the word. Phrases such as “being economical with the truth”, “putting an interpretation on events that

“Pre-emptive Strike” - this is the term for attacking people who haven't touched you yet. To give an everyday example, it is equivalent to going up to a man in a bar and punching him just in case he happens to spill your beer later on.

“We Will See How the Situation Develops” – this basically means we do not have the time, the money, or the inclination to do anything about this at the moment. “I'm glad you asked me that.” - can be translated simply as, “that was the one question I hoped you wouldn't ask me.”

“Battle for Hearts and Minds” - often we are told that the battle for “hearts and minds” is more important than the physical battle with weapons. This seems a little confusing as isn't it a little difficult to convince people of your good intentions when you are bombing them? The answer may lie in the explanation given by a former aide to US President Richard Nixon who said, “When you've got them by the balls their hearts and minds will follow!” “A Constructive Discussion” - this is only used in circumstances where no agreement of any sort has been reached. This is clear because if a solution is reached, then it is still called “an historic agreement”. “An Historic Agreement” - see entry for “A Constructive Discussion.” “Collateral Damage” - this means nothing more and nothing less than dead people! It is far easier for politicians and military people to say “the operation was a success although we did sustain a small amount of collateral damage” than to say “we bulldozed our way through a civilian area and though we killed a few towel heads, we did get what we went in there for.” “Strong Government” – this means simply we are ignoring everybody else. An example would be when the country doesn't want to go to war and the government does they can say they are not being bloody minded or a warmonger but that it is in fact “strong government.” “We Are Putting the Matter to Consultation” this can mean one of 3 things: !we are hoping everyone will forget this unpopular measure we are proposing, and then we can bring it back when the media is concentrating on something else and try and slip it to them that way. !we simply hope the matter will go away or, !employ consultants that you know will agree with your initial policy and then when they report back you can claim your original policy has been vindicated. Of course it's not just politicians who have this ambiguous language, celebrities also have a way of saying things in a way, which isn't all

that it seems. God forbid if politicians and celebrities ever got together at a dinner party, they'd both leave having no idea as to what the other was really saying. So over to you celebrities. “Respect my right to privacy” – this is often used when the celebrity concerned is in a spot of bother. The irony is that when things are going well they can't get enough of it - selling their wedding photo rights to the highest bidder, their first child/happy family photos or wall-to-wall interviews when they're relaunching a fading career. What they really mean by privacy is they only want the good publicity not the bad kind. “I did it in the name of art” – this is normally used when the celebrity has taken on a role involving nudity or maybe even verging on the pornographic. Normally used when a now well known celebrity actor has had some earlier seedy work discovered and published or shown when they were desperate to become famous. Now embarrassed by it the explanation given is it was done “in the name of art”! “I have decided to retire to spend more time with my family” – make no bones about it, celebrities never retire. They may want to take some time out but most have more money than they can spend in a lifetime. However, if they go off the rails and manage to blow what they have or just can't stand being out of the limelight you can rest assured they will soon come out of retirement. In a similar way pop stars or groups may retire or split up but you can be sure they'll be back with a reunion tour, album and a round of TV appearances to publicise the same. So there we have it. Before I go on I'm making a pre-emptive strike to retire and spend more time with my family before I cause more collateral damage and I'll see how the situation develops for the battle for hearts and minds before putting the matter to consultation and see how the situation develops all in the name of art! I hope you respect my right to privacy. Now I think that might make sense! Alick Howard

Dangerous Breeds

A

re you the lucky owner of one of the following breeds: Pitt Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Akita Inu, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino or Fila Brasileiro? If you live in Andalucía more than three months a year with a dog of one of these breeds, then you will have to go through some paperwork, as your dog is considered potentially dangerous. This is also necessary for dogs of other breeds, if they are trained to attack, or if they are mixes of the dangerous breeds, of if the physical caracteristics such as weight, jaw size, etc, make them dangerous for other animals or people. In any of these cases you will need a special licence, which you have to apply for at the town hall. To get the licence, you have to be over 18, have a clean police record, and be psycologically and physically apt. This should be proven with a health certificate. You will also have to go through a dog-training course, and get a specific insurance. The licence lasts for five years, and vets have to ask to see it before we are allowed to treat the dog. If the owner can´t show the license, we have to communicate this to the townhall. The potentially dangerous dog has to be registered, as any other dog, in the central andalusian register. This is done via a form that is filled out when the dog is chipped, within a month after aquiring the animal. In the case of these breeds, the form is a bit different and more expensive.

24

The Grapevine

Adding to this, some town halls have their own local register for potentially dangerous dogs, and often a local tax has to be paid. You are allowed to walk your dog, but you have to be over 18 and always carry the dog's papers on you. You are not allowed to take the dog to places where there are children, like playgrounds or schools. The animal should always wear a muzzle, and be on the lead. This should be no more than a meter long, and only one dog per person. As each town hall is free to add more restrictions to these rules, you should keep yourself informed if you move to a different town. I personally think it is a bit of a shame that the rules are so specific and strict, as in my experience dogs that bite are not of any particular breed. For example, Dobermanns are no problem at all at my clinic as they let me do anything with them, but on the other hand poodles can be really nasty sometimes! The reason behind the rules are probably more political – headlines like ”we need to stop these dangerous dogs” – but an american survey has shown that children are in more danger of being attacked by the family dog in their own home, when they are not under supervision. And labradors are more often involved in these episodes than for example Rottweilers. A bit of common sense and help with the dog training would probably be more effective than all the rules in the world. Naturvets - Competa

our best mate gets a fancy new mobile phone. You salivate over its sleek exterior, high-tech touch screen and huge range of abilities. They say the phone has the ability to get emails, have apps, they can social network and even make the odd phone call. You look at your own ‘so last year’ phone and decide that it is socially unacceptable to use it any longer. You realise that they are very expensive and your current model is, after all, only 12 months old. What you need is a strategy to justify to your nearest and the dearest why you absolutely, positively have to have the best mother flippin phone in the room! You start to casually mention how clunky your old phone is, how it never gets reception, how little time the battery stays charged and how expensive batteries are to replace. You show them the scratches (helped by the way you have taken to throwing it on the table/desk/ floor lately). You point out that it does not have the

latest apps so you were unable to compare the price of pork scratchings in the local pubs before you went and so had to go into every one to make sure you got the best deal. You start to buy gadget magazines and casually leave them lying around open with the object of your desire circled and highlighted . And then you wait. You birthday comes and goes and no one buys you one. As Christmas approaches you increase your efforts which includes sitting on your old phone so that the screen cracks and ignoring your partners text to say they were stuck in the rain with a flat tyre – blaming bad reception. Christmas passes and there is no phone – frankly you were lucky to get that jumper after the whole flat tyre incident. Then finally you resort to desperate measures – you accidentally drown your phone in a freak

sailing accident the same week as your January bonus comes through and the sales start. By lucky happenstance you just happened to have backed up all your numbers the day before. Finally your day has arrived. You try the first mobile phone shop and they only have it in pink, same story in the next one, you start to panic. At the next shop they have sold out and at the next one they will only supply it with the £3,000 per month contract. Suddenly you have an epiphany – going outside to actual physical shops is so 20th Century you should be seated or reclined indoors moving only your right and left hands from the elbow down. You go home and buy it online. Your new phone arrives through the post. It is in a box roughly the size of a small fridge – you start to panic. Maybe they sent you the wrong model and you have something from the 80’s that comes with its own trolley and a wind up handle! You open the box and there at the top is a tiny beautiful black and silver device – you start to drool. After fondling your new phone for about an hour and wiping up the drool you finally investigate what the hell else is in the box. Ah the manual.

can not work out how to get rid of, you cannot use any of your apps mainly because you cannot work out how to get to them. You can use the camera and have taken some great photos and even some video but you have absolutely no idea whatsoever how to remove said items from your phone and get them onto a computer. You cannot set up email. Extensive research on the internet and amongst your social circle reveals that no one has ever managed to set up their email on their phone and you start to suspect a huge conspiracy in the mobile phone industry.

You flick though the first 300 pages and are dismayed to realise that it is not the multiple language version. You start from page one – battery, safety, charging, zzzzzz. You wake up 30 minutes later and peel the instruction manual off your face and wipe up more drool. You decide that manuals are for girls put the phone in your pocket and go to the pub to show off to your mates. You wait so you are fashionably late and everyone else is there and then you walk in with your phone held high in triumph. They all laugh and point.

After several weeks you realise that all you use your phone for is making & receiving calls, telling the time and setting the alarm. You realise that that is all you have used each and every one of your phones for and are momentarily confused as to what you spent all that money on a new one when your old one did that perfectly adequately. You take the phone out of your pocket lay on the taxi seat as you contemplate its worth. You are so deep in thought that you exit the taxi, walk up the steps and let yourself in the flat before you realise that your mobile phone is no longer on your person and is now probably being boxed up for the Taxi drivers wife’s next birthday.

You flee to the loo to deal with your devastation in private. While there you realise they are not laughing at the phone but at you as you have pages 6&7 of your phone manual printed across your face. You use your drool to wipe it off – finally it comes in handy!

You studiously ignore the dark looks your partner shoots you ever time you swear at your phone. They start to mutter things which sound a bit like ‘waste of money’ and ‘read the manual’. However these comments have no impact as you what so ever as you are already practiced at selectively tuning out anything your partner says. For example “do the dishes” and “put your stinking dirty pants in the wash basket” are all effectively tuned out but ”are you ready for the pub” or “I am felling a bit frisky tonight” actually get amplified.

You realise that you have not backed up your address book, you did not buy insurance with the phone and you have precisely 48 minutes to come up with a really good excuse before your partner gets home.

Your love affair with your phone lasts precisely for 18h 23mins. You spend the next 2 weeks swearing in and around the vicinity of your Jenny Napier phone. The **?/## touch screen does not work with your sausage fingers, there are **?/## stupid symbols all over the home page which you

What's Bugging You? by Rose Jones

I

f you are going to emigrate you have to pack some tolerance for the culture you're coming into. I don't mean the artwork; I mean the little things of everyday life. It's their culture, their customs, their country. Being offended because it's not Whitby-With-Sun is ridiculous. Is that going to stop me moaning? What a terrible thought! What the hell would we talk about if we couldn't complain about the sweet life we've chosen in Spain? So, what annoys you most? Is it the mañana thing – or the bad parking? Is it the amazing volume at which locals speak – or the impossibility of buying a good kettle? For what it's worth, here's my list of today's top moans! BLOODY BANGERS No, not fireworks! Fireworks are set off at night in brilliant displays of colour. They make fizzy or crackly or whooshing noises. They may come too often (Saint Somebody's day, fiesta weekend, culture week, the mayor's mother's birthday…) and you might begrudge the money spent lighting up the sky instead of repairing the streetlights, but at least they are beautiful. Bloody bangers, in contrast, aren't anything but ear-splitting, animalscaring, pointless noise. They're let off at every ha' penny excuse and since you can here them a valley or two away you get your ears blasted by everyone else's fiestas as well as your own. Why don't the Spaniards mind? They're surely jarring to everyone out of puberty! Given the decibels maybe they're the reason locals converse by shouting, deafened by years of exposure to the damn things; and they don't mind them because they no longer hear them! Bangers amount to a sulphurous pong, an ear-splitting noise and a firehazard. Alas, nothing can be done. Years ago, Cómpeta town hall placidly told a foreign complainant “We're sorry you don't like them, but this is a tradition here”. Given that an immigrant to Britain who complained about the burning of effigies on Guy Fawkes' night would be hung-drawn and quartered, I suppose that was a tolerant response.

RED TAPE What else gets on our collective wick? Oh, admin, red tape and wait-wait-wait. Make an appointment at the Doctor's and find that the medics have gone to desayuno, or that the appointments were all made four minutes apart so we're running two hours behind. Try to resolve paper work and find that every time you are sent to a different office and asked for a different form. Go into a room full of waiting people and observe the ennui rising from them like steam. It seems appropriate that the Spanish word for to wait and to hope (esperar) are the same. ¡Qué rollo! Entrenched archaic systems hold Spain back. It's hardly just Spain though, is it? Have you never come across any stories of the NHS, or the rail network or the British Government being anything less than perfectly efficient, prompt, organised, consistent and coherent? What can you do? Apart from take book to read in the queue? POOP It's not the car-horns but the walking hazard. I walk a lot, often with two small children or people with people with luggage. I have no problem with dogs that roam, but why can't they put a nappy on them or train them to empty somewhere else first? A bit of rain, a dog with a dodgy tummy and a narrow alleyway and we have Calle Bacterial Health-Hazard moving the tourist's response in the blink of an eye (and the slip of a foot) from charming to revolting in one fell squirt. I've seen considerate owners facing-down the grotesque chore of bagging-up, and every one was a foreigner. Irritating, infuriating, and disgusting: these things get on my nerves. Well, something has to. I know, I know…I should chill out. Because when it comes down to it, it's just the grit in the shoe that tells you that you are still alive. Come on, where have you lived that gave you nothing to moan about? All the immigrants I know, Brits, Irish and Other, would complain about something in paradise. Are bangers, queues and dog dirt worth getting your knickers in a twist? If you can't put up hassle why ever leave home? You just have to watch your step …if you see what I mean…

The Heatwave Heads Home Jan Rowlands and her camper van travels (Part one)

P

ortugal, yes definitely Portugal - we'll travel up through on an inland route and then go into northern Spain and along the coast to Santander". Such was the conversation last April as we planned our journey back to Cornwall. So, with our camper (The Heatwave) loaded up with a good supply of wine for the summer, we headed off east East?! Yup, as with all good plans, something happened to alter our course - an invitation to join in a friend's birthday celebrations at a campsite near Tarragona. An excellent reason, and Portugal will always keep for another time. Our first port of call (literally) was the marina at Almerimar, just west of Almeria , where for a small charge you can park up overnight right next to the beach. It's a pleasant new resort, with boats coming and going all the time, so always something to see. Then, cutting inland across the northern boundary of Cabo de Gato, we were in a very high, very green region covered with the acid yellow oxalis flowers - nothing subtle here, all bold and bright and dramatic. And then winding down into the huge flat market garden that is Murcia. Fields of cultivation as far as the eye can see, with agricultural workers in wide-brimmed hats harvesting millions of lettuces, and looking as if a flock of brightlycoloured birds had landed in a sea of green. The fields were edged with a fringe of red poppies and yellow wild mustard. Altogether a very colourful scene, and an excellent subject for a landscape painting. Then on to the pretty coastal village of Villaricos, with its Spanish heart sitting quite comfortably in the middle of the new holiday builds. On round the coast to Aguilas, a working fishing town where we parked on the wharf and watched nets being mended, and observed the daily evening fish auction which is traditionally attended only by men. The town itself has an elegant main square, and is overlooked by its castle. The path up to the castle was awash with flowers - mallow, lavender, bugloss, asphodel - the delicate colour palette of mauves, pinks and whites giving off a distinct "purple haze" impression. On again, passing the huge fruit and vegetable warehouses, we pushed on to Punta Calnegre. This part of the coast is completely undeveloped, with the road skirting the beach, where we stayed and enjoyed a good cliff-top walk

The Grapevine

which takes you to a point looking down onto a secluded palm-lined cove - a hidden gem. The next part of the coast was the grim reality of Torrevieja....... La Marina, near Alicante, was a breath of fresh air after Torrevieja. The beach is well-maintained and clean, but with only a bar and a few old summer houses backed by sand dunes. Behind the dunes is a large wooded area, perfect for walking. After Villajoyosa you turn a corner and there before you are the high rises of Benidorm the "cathedrals" of mass tourism. Very impressive - more New York than Spain! Having said that, the town is smart and immaculate and has an air of prosperity. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it well. Near Denia we turned inland into orange groves in blossom. The intoxicating perfume was wonderful. Back in Spain again..... A Sunday afternoon and we were driving through Valencia - stylish people, modern architecture, trees in flower, hardly any traffic, placido domingo! Then we hit on a very strange place. I couldn't tell you the name of it as we saw no sign, but it was a resort near Castello consisting of some long-established houses along the seafront, with acres of urbanisation stretching all around. Despite all the buildings there were no shops anywhere, nor were there any bars (and believe me, we looked!), just an estate agency and a cafe that only sold burgers, ice-cream and soft drinks. At night the place was illuminated like a Christmas tree, but there was no-one there - very spooky! One thing I do look out for on these trips is public art at the side of the road, and especially on roundabouts. It ranges from ultra-modern, through depictive to the downright whimsical, and is always interesting. I am convinced that art feeds the soul and lifts the spirits (and it would be a sad old world without it), and in conjunction with nature and the outdoors, seems particularly to do so. Also, have you ever looked closely at cement works? So complicated and intricate - industrial works of art. Anyway, I'm going off at a tangent here. On with the journey. Peniscola next with its impressive castle and sweeping bay, and then to Tamarit, just beyond Tarragona, to meet up with our friends. A great

time was had by all - in our glad rags on the beach at the cocktail hour for champers and prawns (much to the interest of passers-by!). The camp site was state-of-the-art, but cost an eye-watering 40 euros per night - and that was in the low season! Moving swiftly on we cut inland past Lleida and Huesca and into a wild and remote region, where we saw eagles and red kites, and with the snowcapped Pyrenees in the distance. Our stopping place in this area was a campsite at Santa Cilia de Jaca, which was in a beautiful woodland setting, and with the most amazing log cabins like little gingerbread houses. On the picturesque road to Pamplona, which is part of a pilgrim route, we passed a sign which said that it was 792 kms. to Santiago de Compostela! Enough to deter the most dedicated walker, I think. And, in a tiny village, the locals had obviously identified a need to have something to sit on at their bus stop so, ever practical, they had supplied an assortment of their old chairs - white plastic, wooden kitchen, ornate dining - and lined them up along the pavement with their back legs firmly wedged over a low wall. Job done and problem solved! The Heatwave must have become fed up with us talking about replacing him with a newer model, and made his protest by providing us with various irritations on the way. The fridge stopped working, which involved a lively and expensive visit from a jolly Spanish gas fitter. The cooker gaskets disintegrated and we spent a happy "Blue Peter" hour fashioning new ones from cardboard and silver foil. The door hinges decided it would be more interesting if they closed the door at an angle that meant that it didn't fit in the doorway (a lump hammer came into play here!), and we then discovered that the bathroom vent cover had flown off along the way somewhere. Not to mention the step which was knocked out of line when someone bumped into us in a narrow road - lump hammer again! All fixable, but frustrating and funny in equal measures. Then we lost the lump hammer...... Even Tim, the sat-nav man, spent much of his time roaming the wilderness of his own private netherworld as he just couldn't cope with all the new road systems that have been put in place since his conception. We decided we would have to put him out of his misery and replace him with a younger model. We knew when we were in the Basque country when the road signs began showing an impressive amount of the letters x, k and z in the place names. The origins of the language are unknown, and bear no relation to any other language apparently. Also,

a true native of the area has the blood group Rhesus Negative. A truly unique place. Then San Sebastian. Ab fab! A smart and stylish resort with so much to see and do, from the beautiful beaches to the old fishing port to the charming old quarter. Like Santander it is very popular with the French as it is not far from the border. In a bar we became acquainted with a Basque custom. When people go out in the evening they, in effect, go on a pub crawl, just having one drink and a tapa (known as "pintxos") in each bar before moving on to the next. And the pintxos are something special. I've never seen so much interesting food on a bar counter. It's no surprise that Basque cuisine is reputedly the best in Spain. The town is very welcoming to tourists and at the university there is a dedicated parking area for campers and motorhomes, that is within easy walking distance of the centre. After visiting the fishing village of Bermeo, we dropped down to Gernika (local spelling) to see the Tree of Gernika, around which the parliament gathered in years gone by. As it happened we were there on the anniversary of the bombing, and all the museums were open and free for that day. In the Peace Garden we viewed inspiring sculptures by Henry Moore and Eduardo Chillida. Chillida is also the creator of the famous "El Peine de los Vientos" sculpture at San Sebastian which "combs the wind" as it enters the harbour. Near Santander we stayed at the Parque de Naturaleza de Cabarceno, a stunning location next to a lake with the added surprise of a deep natural valley nearby, with elephants, water buffalo and antelope! Our final stop was at the village of Lierganes. It was a baking hot day and it was lovely to be able to sit on the rocks at the side of the river and just while away the time. The old part of the village has been restored (possibly a bit overdone) and its stone and wood houses are immaculate. Much of the interest centres on the local legend of "El Hombre Pez" and is reflected in the gift shops and statues. The story goes as follows:- In 1679, a young fisherman fell from a boat in Santander harbour and was washed up in the Bay of Cadiz five years later, alive but in the form of a strange sea creature with human features. He couldn't speak apart from the word "Lierganes". Word was sent to the village and his widowed mother claimed him. He returned home where he lived as a recluse, showing no interest in anything or anyone, and sometimes walking around naked. He was sent on an errand to Santander, where he disappeared again into the sea and was never seen again............. And on that note, with that in mind, we made our way to Santander and the ferry............!

ADVICE AND INFORMATION ON MARKETING YOUR PROPERTY THE SPECTRE OF SENTIMENTS..... Set aside your emotions! At Sunset Properties www.sunsetpropertiesspain.com we know that your house is your pride and joy, a place in which you have invested a lot of time, effort and money. However, once you have decided to sell it, you must set aside your emotions, stop thinking about it as your home – the aim is now to convince potential buyers that it's their ideal home. It's true, home is where the heart is and we all become attached to our houses. Selling the house you love can be both emotional and stressful – even though you've decided it's time to move on, it can be very difficult to simply let go. OK, OK it's usually the women who find this more difficult than the men! You must start to view your property as what it is – bricks and mortar – you'll recreate your home in the next property you buy and the person who wants to buy your house is going to make it their home and look after it just like you did. Take the 'you' out of your house! You've decided to sell so the time has come to make your house less personal to you. Too many family photos and personal items mean clients will still think of the house as yours – they can't imagine living there themselves. Pack them away in readiness for your move. Remove clutter from every room! We all have treasured possessions that we've accumulated over the years and they all have their special place in our homes but too much clutter can detract a client's attention from the property itself so time to pack it all up and make your house look more open and spacious. What you see is what you get! If your house has 3 bedrooms you'll want us to describe it as such – difficult if the 3rd bedroom is your 'junk' room (let's face it, we've all got one!) Clients viewing a 3 bedroom house want to actually see 3 bedrooms – not 2 bedrooms and a glory hole full of 'stuff'. So present the 3rd bedroom as a bedroom and take the opportunity to box up all those bits and pieces and store them somewhere else after all you are going to move so

you might as well start packing sooner rather than later! Take our advice! At Sunset Properties we'll guide you every step of the way and we'll be truthful with you about the presentation of your house. All we ask in return is that you take our guidance as it is intended – as our professional opinion on what you need to do to make your property marketable. Our advice is not meant as personal criticism of you or your property so please don't take it as such after all we have the same objective as you which is to sell your house! Get some impartial help! If you want some independent assistance, we can recommend a house staging service - a local expert who won't have the same emotional feelings for your house as you do – someone who'll look at it objectively and give you ideas on how to best present it. Presenting your property Initial impact First impressions are crucial and it's essential that you present your property nicely – Ensure that it's clean and tidy inside and out and in good decorative order Stage your property outside Make sure everything works Touch up the paintwork – inside and outside Mask odours caused by smoking and pets. Setting the scene Before the clients arrive – Make sure the house is neat and tidy Put the lights on in the house as it'll give it a homely feel Make certain the exterior looks just as good as the interior Ensure your pets are outside and under control Put your emotions aside! Twelve Trees for 2011 Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

L

ast year at this time, I wrote about twelve trees - one for each month of the year. It proved popular and prompted lots of response. So, entering 2011, here are twelve rather out-of-the ordinary trees. With so many mature gardens around the Axarquia now, many of you have all the old stalwarts, jacaranda, mimosa, false pepper etc., and are looking for something that bit special. Furthermore, the loss of so many palms to the devouring picudo rojo has left large gaps in many gardens. So, let's see if any of these will entice you into planting a tree in 2011. January, tamarix gallica, French tamarisk. A small, shrubby, deciduous tree which is excellent in exposed positions and for preventing soil erosion. It makes an excellent pioneer planting, being hardy and a quick grower yet never oppressive with its fine feathery foliage. Slender branches spread to 4m high x 3m wide. Fluffy pink flowers. February, lagunaria patersonii, Norfolk Island hibiscus or cow itch tree. A tough, evergreen tree, conical, to 12m high x 6m wide, and hardy down to -5C. Native to the Norfolk Island off Australia, it copes well with salt spray and windy sites. A little slow but very pretty with its pink bell-shaped flowers and leathery grey-green leaves and becoming very drought tolerant. Beware the hairy, irritant coating lining the seed cases.

March, prunus serrulata 'kwanzan', Japanese flowering cherry. For stunning flowers, this is the one. A rounded form, 12m high x 6m wide, it is attractive in all stages. The bark is glossy and striped in hues of copper and burgundy; new growths are bronzed and the double flowers are deep pink and rose-like. Cherry-like fruits sometimes set but are not edible. April, paulownia tomentosa, Royal Empress or foxglove tree. One of our most impressive trees in beauty and growth rate. Large furry leaves are very exotic looking and the lilac foxglove-like flowers are super-elegant. Deciduous, to 15m high x 10m wide, or coppice it yearly when its vigour will produce immense heart-shaped leaves. .

May, brachychiton bidwillii, little kurrajong. This Australian is a delightful small shrubbytype tree, to 6m tall, ideal for small gardens or courtyards. Rare and protected in its home, it likes a sunny position but is hardy to -7C and will become very drought tolerant. Pink gobletshaped flowers are held in tight clusters along bare branches, especially, at the tips. Some flowers will even sprout out of the mature trunk. Like the brachychiton acerifolius, leaves fall before the spring flowering.

June, stenocarpus sinuatus, pinwheel or firewheel tree. An evergreen Australian with very beautiful, lobed, shiny leaves and spectacular flaming red firewheel flowers. Can reach 30m tall but, in cultivation, is usually considerably smaller. Although native to semitropical areas, it will succeed in drier areas if you can water deeply now and again. Hardy to around -3C. July, metrosideros excelsa, pohutukawa, New Zealand Christmas tree. This is a real toughie growing on steep coastal cliffs in New Zealand where it is constantly battered by winds and salty spray. The dramatic scarlet rounded bottlebrush flowers (in summer for us) are nicely offset by leathery grey-green leaves. Often seen as a shrub, it makes a large and very spreading tree with aerial roots. Mature trees, can reach 15m high with a massive shade canopy of 30m Last year at this time, I wrote about twelve trees - one for each month of the year. ike it or not we are in a rapidly changing technological world, which brings with it many advantages but also many disadvantages. You don't need me to tell you that. I remember when I was at school learning about how technology will completely change our way of life. No more would we be slaving away at a desk working long hours in an office. We'd all be sitting on the proverbial Caribbean beach sipping Pina Coladas while technology would do everything for us.

It can't be denied that technology and, specifically, computers and mobile phones (a misnomer as making phone calls is one of the few things mobile phones are used for) have changed all our lives but I don't see anyone sitting on that beach chilling out while these devices do the work. As much time as computers save on many tasks, the time saved is often taken up solving the problems they create. I know I've spent many an hour on the phone to a company´s technical department waiting for them to solve my crashed computer or a programme which simply won't do what it's meant to. And how many times has this been solved with the apparent all encapsulating technical helpdesk phrase, “Turn it off wait a few minutes then turn it on again”? One of the many ways these devices continue to change our lives is the language we use and specifically the way we write it, or should that be type it? I'm talking spelling and grammar – and

56

The Grapevine

for the younger people reading this “grammar” is not an elderly relative married to your grandad. Mobile phone texting and social networking sites spawn a whole new language of their own, some of which is finding its way into contemporary English dictionaries. Now they say when you start sounding like your parents, you're getting old, but one thing I struggle with is writing in this language without the proper spelling and punctuation. OK, I understand it makes things quicker and gets the message across but apparently this language is finding its way into normal school exam situations and not being corrected. It's all about showing you understand the subject matter not whether you communicate your understanding using correct English. Here comes the sounding like your parents bit. When I was at school, even if you were sitting a Geography exam, if your spelling and grammar weren't right you would lose marks. Children are leaving school without being able to write proper English, spell correctly or use correct grammar. And it's a disgrace, I say! I'm sounding so much like my parents, even my own parents are revolting! No, I don't mean horrible, of course. I now get mobile text messages from my Mum which read something like, “Hi, hw r u? R u @wrk? Hpe wthrs gud. ADIP? Lol. Lkng 4wd 2 cing u sn. L8rs. Lol Mum”

She's getting down with the kids and I reply something like, “Hello, Mother dear. It's good to hear from you. Yes, it feels like another day in paradise and the meteorological situation is rather good. I am looking forward to your future visit. This message is sent with much love to you all.” OK, not quite as apart from anything else the message would probably run into two messages and cost me a fortune but you can see my point. Some children are writing like they text and think it's normal. The question is whether this shortened form of the written word is having an affect on younger adults when it comes to them trying to write correctly. Now before I go on, I do realise that I am setting myself up for a huge fall here as I'm sure there will be some Smart Alec (no pun intended but I do spell my name “Alick”!) who will be picking holes in this article looking for errors especially if the Grapevine editor gets hold of it! I'll blame it on the smell chucker [sic]. Apart from 'text speak' common spelling and grammar errors do annoy me somewhat. The classic is the difference between there and their, which I've also seen written as they're. We should know that there refers to the indication of a position, place or point, such as “over there”, whereas their indicates possession or association, such as “their bicycle”. Another classic mistake, which can easily be resolved by remembering a short mnemonic is which way round to place the “i” and “e” in a word. Words such as “believe”, “achieve”, “conceive” and “perceive”. You can see the i and e are positioned differently in the first two words than in the second. An easy way of remembering which way round they go is to use the mnemonic device, “i before e except after c”, which you can see applies to the above words. As is often the case, however, their…whoops…. I mean there are exceptions such as “science”, “protein” and “their”. There, that word their is there again! I'm afraid the exceptions will just have to be learnt. such as “science”, “protein” and “their”. There, that word their is there again! I'm afraid the exceptions will just have to be learnt. Not only do we see spelling errors but also grammatical errors are common place, especially when writing casually in emails or on social networking sites such as Facebook. The most common must be the use of the apostrophe.

Its proper use is to indicate possession or to indicate that a word has been shortened in some way. Examples of its use to indicate possession are, “my brother's house”, or “my sister's birthday”. A slight complication arises when you are referring to possession in the plural, for example, “my brothers' houses” or “my sisters' birthdays”, where the apostrophe goes after the s and not before as in the singular. A common mistake is to use the apostrophe when you are using a word in the plural such as “car's” or “bottle's”. That one really gets my goat! When a word has been shortened then the apostrophe is used to indicate this. Phrases such as, “There's nobody here”, which could also be written, “There is nobody here”, the apostrophe indicates the shortening of “There is” to “There's”. I could go on (“You usually do”, I hear you say. There's another, you see, hear and here) but I won't. Oh no, another! Why does the apostrophe get used in the word won't? It's not possessive or a contraction. It derives from my native Yorkshire from the shortened will not to willn't and was used in this way in many of Emily Bronte's books. This has then changed through history and the use of the verb will. Who said the English language was easy? How will our language change as we go on and wll we b jst wrtng as we now txt 2 get our msg acrs? I say if it's worth writing it's worth writing correctly, isn't it? Of nit at leash ewe can use the spill chucker, which ewe will fund in mast computer programs. It's bitter then knitting!

Life in the wrong lane

A

h the joys of driving in Spain; the dramatic, beautiful scenery illuminated by a warm sun sitting in a clear blue sky. This can all be enjoyed as long as you have prepared for your journey – passport, spare pair of glasses, warning triangles, spare bulbs and fuses etc etc. To be honest, most of my Driving Essentials knowledge has been gleaned from “Bloke down the pub told me” type of conversations. At various times I have been told that you need a copy of your payment to the insurance company as well as your policy document and that now you DO NOT need a copy of your payment to the insurance company as it is all computerised now! Also, I am assured, you need to have a health certificate that you can get from a clinic and that any photo copies of your documents need to be authorised by the town hall. Some of the above may be true; there is an advert on the radio for an insurance company that goes into some detail about driving laws in Spain that is so dull that the last time I heard it whilst driving I nearly dozed off and crashed. Imagine filling out that insurance claim form!

62

The Grapevine

On the few occasions I have been stopped by the Guardia – I must add here that they have all been random checks, not for my bad driving – they have just asked for my driving license (as I sat there clutching my luminous yellow jackets and spare glasses in preparation). My advice would be, do not drive whilst drunk and avoid crashing. Simple! The Spanish driving foible that always gets me is which lane to be in whilst using a roundabout. I have lost count of the number of times I have been hooted at by other drivers whilst turning left at a roundabout by using the inside lane and then indicating to come off at the junction I need as I would do in the UK. A guy I know from Orgiva told me that he has had a conversation regarding this subject with a friend of his who is a Guardia Civil tráfico officer. It goes without saying of course that this conversation was probably in a bar. The officer apparently told him that as long as you are in the outside lane of a roundabout with your indicator on, you are in the right and if somebody drove into you whilst coming out of the inside lane they would be at fault. This seemed OK, but I pointed out that this

To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873

explanation did not answer the question “what is the inside lane for?” He replied “yes I asked him that but he said he did not know”! That clears that up then. This article is not intended to be against driving in Spain. On the contrary, driving in the UK has many ambiguous unwritten rules of the road. Why for example do lorry drivers flash you when you are indicating to pull in after overtaking them on the motorway? Is it to say 'You are safe to pull in' (I know that because my car is equipped with mirrors) or more likely 'You are on my road and I am granting you permission to pull in, in front of me'. Also I wonder why lorry drivers drive in the 'slow lane'. Some may say it is so that they can more easily spot their next prostitute to kill. Of course I would not say that as most lorry drivers are bigger than me. Once whilst filling up my car in my home town of Milton Keynes (please keep your jokes about concrete cows to yourselves. I've probably heard them all before) when a stocky, surly looking lorry driver pulled up and got out of his cab and asked me how to get to an industrial estate. Using my skills of the local road system – MK is basically a grid system of horizontal and vertical

roads joined together by a million roundabouts and has given us many interesting road names such as the V9 or my personal favourite, the H3 I told the lorry driver how to get there. As he pulled away I checked the route over in my head and realised that I had made a mistake and if he followed them exactly would arrive back at the petrol station in about 3 minutes. Luckily due to a short queue and my generous offer to the cashier of keeping the change, I managed to get away before he returned. The roads in the UK are also overcrowded and traffic jams are all too common. The only traffic jams I see in Spain are caused by herds of goats, accidents and the annual one going into Malaga when the circus is in town presumably caused by the passengers in the cars saying to the driver “Look over there. It's an elephant” So given the choice of driving in Spain or the UK I would definitely choose Spain. And as an added bonus the steering wheel is even on the right side of the car! Andy Wilkes

T

he Costa Animal Society's two Christmas parties raised well over 1,000 euros for the charity's work. Friends of CAS gathered at La Roca in CĂłmpeta and, the following week, at El Sotano Viejo in Nerja to enjoy food, entertainment and dancing. Thanks to all who supported the festive events. Thank you, too, from the Costa Animal Society to Jan and David Neale who held their annual charity Christmas dinner dance at the Hotel Al Andalus in Maro in early December. The well-attended function was entertained by Andy Time and the evening raised a total of 590 euros which this year was equally divided between CAS and Cudeca

As the Costa Animal Society enters its 25th year of helping abandoned and maltreated animals, it plans to expand its network of foster families. These volunteers agree to look after cats and dogs which are waiting to find a new permanent home. It is a vital part of the charity's operations and takes the pressure off the limited space available at the various kennels in the area. CAS already has many fosterers on whom they can call, but the volunteers know that there are an increasing number of animals which need to be homed and there are never enough foster families to go round. If you would like to find out more about becoming a CAS fosterer, have a no-obligation chat with Wendy on 95 203 7095.

An Arm and A Leg Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, and he heard a loud voice ask him, "What is wrong with you?" Adam said he didn't have anyone to talk to. Then the loud voice said he was going to give him a companion and it would be a woman. He said "This person will cook for you and wash your clothes, she will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will not nag you, and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give you love and compassion whenever needed." Adam asked "What would a woman like this cost me?" The answer was "An arm and a leg." Adam then asked "What can I get for just a rib?" The rest is history.

THE DOCTOR

THE CHOKING BOY

A doctor was addressing a large audience in Oxford.

A father walks into a restaurant with his young son. He gives the boy three 10p coins to play with to keep him occupied. Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face. The father realizes that the little boy has swallowed the coins and starts slapping him on the back..

“The material we put into our stomachs should have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is full of steroids and dye. Soft drinks such as coke corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High transfat diets can be disastrous and none of us realises the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But, there is one thing that is the mo st dangerous of all and most of us have, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?" After several seconds of silence, a 70-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, "Wedding Cake.”

Dave Dawson - Canillas de Albaida

PARKING My wife asked me to put the car in the driveway for her. Admittedly, it is a bit of a tight fit. After I'd done it, she asked me, "How did you do that?" I explained that there's a small mark on the wall and when that lines up with the left hand wing mirror I pull the steering wheel slightly to the right and it fits in fine. "No," she said, "How did you make it go backwards?"

The boy coughs up 2 of the 10p's, but keeps choking. Looking at his son, the father is panicking, shouting for help.A well dressed, attractive, and serious looking woman in a blue business suit is sitting at a coffee bar reading a newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup down, neatly folds the newspaper places it on the counter, gets up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried, across the restaurant. Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants; takes hold of the boy's testicles and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at first and then ever so firmly. After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the last of the 10p's, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand. Releasing the boy's testicles, the woman hands the coin to the father and walks back to her seat at the coffee bar without saying a word. As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, "I've never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic. Are you a Doctor?"

Pat Duffy - Competa 'No,' the woman replied. 'I'm with the Inland Revenue.’

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA CÓMPETA GALA The stars did shine on Cómpeta at the Dance Gala Shows, but not necessarily the stars we expected! The 4 Reach4Dance artists made it through snow and ice to Gatwick Airport, only to be thwarted at the last minute by striking air traffic controllers in Spain. Fortunately, our young guests from Elmhurst school got through and provided some stunning classical ballet for our audiences. Lisa Michaela, a professional belly dancer from Málaga stepped in at the last moment as well. All who saw her agreed that she brought the stage to life, using her whole body, especially her face and eyes, to draw us into an amazing performance. Juan Luis, our flamenco dancer and Pedro, a guitarist provided drama and passion, Andalucian style. Local singers Tom and Lisa provided us with beautiful music and song between the dancers. The artists received received standing ovations on both nights, and despite last minute changes to the shows, the audience went home with a spring in their step. The shows have raised a substantial sum, still being counted, for the high school and Reach4Dance. CAMPO are especially grateful to Ben Alford of Nerja Solutions, who donated the big raffle prize and Steve Brogan, of Brogan Properties, who donated cash to cover initial costs. The Mayor and town hall came up trumps, providing the venue and stage. The Mayor, José Manuel Fernandes

86

The Grapevine

Rodriques, made a gracious speech on the first night and commented that he usually tried to dance with his feet, but this show made him dance with his heart. Debi Bond and Sue van de Water and the team of CAMPO volunteers provided amazing planning and back up, ensuring things went smoothly. Special thanks to Remy and Chester for tapas and bubbles, Oscar for the bar, also provided at short notice and Martin Robinson, who did a fantastic job setting the stage. Ray and Inez provided commentary in Spanish and English Eurovision style. Expect a range of events in the spring. CAMPO really is setting a standard in bringing high quality performance to Cómpeta. More information regarding upcoming events can be found on the CAPO website, www.campo.competaart.com.

Local News

LA VINUELA La Viñuela Mayor Juan Millan has refused to give up his post until he has “exhausted all legal means” at his disposal to try and prove his “innocence”. IN April he was found guilty of real estate crimes and was banned from public office for 16 years and six months and ordered to pay a €13,500 fine. The Environmental Prosecutor has brought a new case against the Mayor of La Viñuela, Juan Millan, for six alleged development crimes. The charges will be extended to anyone else who is found to have been involved in the case. The prosecution considers that the mayor granted six building licenses without following the correct legal process, in an “arbitrary and unjust way”. TORROX More than half of the promenade Torrox Costa is now designated as being maritime-terrestrial public domain land. This is since the coastal areas were realigned by the Coastal Department of the Ministry of Environment. This means business located in the area will be unable to renew their leases so that the land can revert to the public domain.

TORROX A man accused of murdering another in the town of Torrox Malaga in May 2008 proclaimed his innocence The defendant revealed that he had known the victim for seven years as they lived in the same village and worked close by. He said that on the night they bumped into each other in a bar but insisted that they had not fought or needed to be separated in the second bar, contrary to witness statements.

30,000 WORKING IN THE BLACK According to the tax office, the black economy is the equivalent of more than 22 per cent of Malaga’s Gross Domestic Product, a proportion that, according to the secretary general workers union, José María Mollinedo, goes up to 30 per cent in the working in the balckcase of self-employed workers. So far this year 18,000 self-employed workers have signed off the Autonomous Workers Register in the province of Malaga and only 20 per cent of these did so due to retirement or disability. The rest are professionals who have been forced by the crisis to shut up shop, at least officially.
