Solutions 4 U specializes in all the legal aspects that surround property purchase and sale.
Buy With Confidence From experience we can say that many properties that are for sale have some irregularities in their paperwork, however it is our speciality to eradicate them. Whether you are selling or buying you want to do so with a sense of complete confidence. Working with an impartial Lawyer we are therefore currently updating the Title documents to a good amount of properties, so that when you buy with us you know that the property is registered correctly. We can also advise on Planning Issues which can save endless difficulties later on.
Have Peace of Mind For those who already own a property and may have concerns, we offer a FREE consultation whereby you can bring along a copy of your Title Deed and IBI (Rates) certificate and we will establish whether all your property is registered correctly. If inconsistencies are found we will explain fully what needs to be done, give you a time scale and a written estimate of the cost. Once completed you’ll see where the corrections have been made, thereafter happy that all your property is fully registered.
Solutions 4 U – easy parking right outside the office On the Torrox/Sayalonga Rd junction, ½ kilometer before Cómpeta

In the ongoing fight against cigarette butts on the streets of Granada, the environment department of the City Hall is to hand out 10,000 pocket ashtrays. The new anti-smoking legislation has resulted in people smoking outside bars in the street and many of them just leave their butts behind on the ground. Local kiosk owners have agreed to hand out the free pocket ash trays which intend to stop the ‘indiscriminate’ throwing away of butts on the public way. The City Hall has also made a call to

The Mayor of the Granada town of Durcal, the PP’s José Manuel Pazo, has decided to renounce his wage as Mayor and give it to 20 unemployed youngsters in the town. The initiative ‘Work at Christmas in Durcal’ has seen 98 people apply and 20 of them will be selected. There are people of all types in the applicants, including university graduates. Those who are lucky will be working in carrying out duties which will improve the municipality and will have a 15 day contract, and be paid 700 €. ix green plastic sheep on a West Sussex roundabout have been put behind bright yellow safety barriers to stop drivers thinking they are real. The fake flock was installed at the junction on the A283 in Shoreham at the end of November to reflect the South Downs National Park status. West Sussex County Council said the sheep had also been painted green to stop drivers thinking they were real. But it said it was working with the sponsor on a longterm solution. A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council said: "The County Council has a scheme where companies can sponsor a roundabout by paying for maintenance and improvements. "There are many schemes across the county. For larger roundabouts, such as A283 Shoreham, we expect a feature such as a sculpture or enhanced planting to be provided." She added: "They are bright green so they are not mistaken for the real thing. However, because some motorists have expressed concerns that the sheep are real, temporary roadwork barriers were placed around them. "We are discussing a long-term solution with the sponsor." The council said the cost of the roundabout schemes were paid for by sponsors.
oronto's so-called gay penguins, Buddy and Pedro, have officially split, say zoo keepers, after one of them found a female mate. They were separated last month by zoo officials who said they needed to reproduce because African penguins are an endangered species. Buddy has now paired with a female, but Pedro has yet to get lucky, though it is not said to be for lack of trying. Buddy and Pedro shared a nest for about one year after arriving at the zoo. Videos of the pair became hugely popular on the internet. Tom Mason, Toronto Zoo's curator of birds and invertebrates, told a news conference that less than three days after Buddy and Pedro's "bromance" was ended, the former successfully paired with a female, Farai, on 19 November. Pedro has been chasing another female, Thandiwey, for several weeks, although she has so far shown little interest. Mr Mason said Buddy and Pedro's relationship had been social, not sexual, and that both would probably end up settling with females. Buddy, 21, had a female partner for a decade and produced chicks. But Pedro, 10, has yet to produce any offspring.
A
fire at a retirement home in the French city of Marseille has left six women dead and 13 other people injured. The fire was started accidentally by a man, 75, who had tried to open a packet of sweets with a cigarette lighter in his third-floor room, officials say. The flames spread quickly and the six victims, although not close to his room, were unable to move.

The New Year & New Year Resolutions
T
he tradition of the New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year. The New Year has not always begun on January 1, and it doesn't begin on that date everywhere today. It begins on that date only for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar. January 1 became the beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the seasons than previous calendars had. The Romans named the first month of the year after Janus, the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. He was always depicted with two faces, one on the front of his head and one on the back. Thus he could look backward and forward at the same time. At midnight on December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new. The Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year's Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus became more common New Year's gifts. In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year's Day to December 25, the birth of Jesus. Then they changed it to March 25, a holiday called the Annunciation. In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and the celebration of the New Year was returned to January 1. The Julian and Gregorian calendars are solar

calendars. Some cultures have lunar calendars, however. A year in a lunar calendar is less than 365 days because the months are based on the phases of the moon. The Chinese use a lunar calendar. Their new year begins at the time of the first full moon (over the Far East) after the sun enters Aquarius- sometime between January 19 and February 21. Although the date for New Year's Day is not the same in every culture, it is always a time for celebration and for customs to ensure good luck in the coming year. Ancient New Years The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar. Late March actually is a logical choice for the beginning of a new year. It is the time of year that spring begins and new crops are planted. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary. The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison. The Romans continued to observe the New Year on March 25, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun. In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the New Year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

Our Ancient Roots
Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
T
he dawning of a New Year tends to make us reflective; we look back but also, more excitingly, we look forward. Within the scheme of wishes and plans, most of us spare a thought or two for our gardens. Keen gardener or not, nearly all of us ‘dabble’ at it some time in our lives and some of us become happily obsessed with it! Scorching summers can be demoralising as we watch our gardens struggle to survive but those first thrusting buds of early spring are pure enchantment and we are washed along on a surge of springtime as our gardens explode into lush greens and colourful flowers. There are many reasons for gardening. For some it is pure love; some do it as a pastime and source of exercise and fresh air; others want the satisfaction of growing their own produce and a few do it simply to make their plot look inviting and tidy. Whatever your reason, you can be sure that you are following a long line of history and tradition.
34 The Grapevine
It’s interesting to note the differing forms of gardening within cultures. The Spanish, Italians and Greeks, in particular, still have a tradition of only growing edible crops, certainly amongst the country folk whereas the neighbouring Mediterranean countries of North Africa and the Middle East have a long and illustrious decorative gardening history. Prosperity – or lack of it - also paid a very large part in the evolution of gardens, the wealthy being able to afford decorative whimsies whereas the poorer people, logically, used land as a valuable food source. The act of planting for a purpose, rather than just utilising wild plantings, is largely attributed to the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians. They planted trees and grapevines to give shade to their courtyards. Medicinal herbs and spices were grown for practical purposes in separate gardens whilst beautiful flowers adorned enclosed courtyards and patios. It is known that the Egyptians, by 1500BC, had large public

gardens and leisure parks. The Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians, in particular, all created their own particular gardens of paradise with fountains, lakes and rills. Logically, in hotter climes, water played a large part in their design. Large hunting parks were also developed as a pastime for the wealthy. Around the same time, the Chinese were also developing gardens and became especially skilled in the usage of herbs for medicinal treatments and prevention of disease, a knowledge that continues to this day. One of the earliest references we have to ancient gardens are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, built around 600 BC, a fabulous creation built to the orders of King Nebuchadnezzar to please his wife who, in the sun-baked and barren flatness of Babylonia (modern day Iraq) yearned for the green tree covered mountains of her homeland, Media The magnificent green, leafy, artificial mountain was built and irrigated by a chain pump with buckets of water dipped into a reservoir. Water was dispersed through gated channels and streams meandering through the plants with slaves constantly turning the wheels to keep the gardens humid, lush and exotic. The Greeks adopted this idea of shady courtyards but they were not great decorative gardeners. They preferred orchards, vineyards and vegetable gardens. The Romans were probably the first to form gardens next to their palaces and homes for the wealthy. They liked formal gardens with lots of statuary. Wherever they conquered they introduced a great range of plants - like roses, leeks, cabbages, turnips and plums to Britain for instance. After the fall of the Roman Empire, gardens in Western Europe largely went into decline and were only saved by monastery gardens where herbs, vegetables and fruit were grown alongside flowers for the decoration of churches. These monastery gardens evolved into physic gardens, such as the famous Chelsea Physic Garden opened in 1673. By the 18th century the grand landscaped gardens of the wealthy, epitomised by the designer Capability Brown, were spreading from England and France through most of Europe.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the Incas were cultivating fruits, vegetables and other plants that produced medicines, poisons, dyes, love potions and even contraceptives! The Aztecs loved their ornamental plants and developed elaborate terraced and floating gardens. The US remained largely natural land until colonisers brought their horticultural techniques with them. The Moors, of course, were the great gardeners of Spain, introducing and developing further in Spain many of the beautiful gardening ideas they’d seen in Persia. Islamic gardens were often walled and decorated with glazed tiles, divided by water channels and decorated with fountains. Some of our most traditional plants – citrus, pomegranate, mulberry, walnut, poplar, date, fig, almond, apricot, pear, quince, jasmine, hollyhocks and lilies were all introduced by the Moors. These beautiful gardens are a great inheritance and heritage for us. Peek through a wrought iron gate of a town garden and you’ll still see the heavy influence of Islamic gardens. They were peaceful places used as retreats, to recline, rest and ruminate away from the madding crowd. On a cold wet winter’s day, that sounds like a good plan to me! And talking of ancient roots, we have a great selection of bare-root fruit trees in stock – all at €6.50 each. The Praying Mantis
T
he Praying Mantis, scientific name Mantodea, or Mantis Religiosa as it is known in Spain is one of the most loved of the insect world to humans and one of the most feared to other insects. There are 15 identified species within mainland Spain; however there are over 2200 identified species of mantis worldwide. These green, brown, and grey carnivorous insects lay in wait for their unsuspecting prey. They squat discreetly close to plants and shrubs with their 2 front legs folded as if in prayer. These legs are armed with many sharp spikes with which they grasp and secure their prey. The mantis has the ability to rotate its head through almost 300 degrees rotation without moving its body. They have 2 large compound eyes mounted on their triangular heads as their main visual receptors and three supporting simpler eyes for good measure. They are believed to be able to spot prey up to 60 feet away. These highly proficient cannibalistic insects are a force to be reckoned with. Females often devour the male after mating, but the meal often commences during the mating.

Adult mantises range in size from 1 cm to 150 cm, that is 3/8 to 6” in old money, but the largest mantis ever recorded was an astonishing 46 cm long yes 18” from tip to toe. Buen Viaje! Sometimes the journey is as memorable as the holiday…
T
he taxi was booked for 6:30 a.m. Andrew set his alarm for 5:00 – an hour and a half to shower, dress, shave, pack, gulp down a coffee and recheck everything three times muttering, “What have I forgotten?” Unfortunately, a power cut in the night knocked out the electric alarm clock. Andrew woke at 6:15. Instead of careful preparation he threw his things together and landed in the taxi looking as dishevelled as he felt and snarling, “What have I forgotten?” At check-in he found he'd neglected to weigh his cases. Looking forward to this long-postponed holiday he had been unable to put aside the idea of playing his guitar on the sunny roof-terrace in the evenings. He'd bought a hard case and reluctantly forked out the £12 for a second holdcase of up to 20kg. Now the scales showed that it was knocking up just 10kg, half that allowance. Of course, his main case was heavy; very heavy: a full 28kg. “That'll be £96” said the girl at the counter. “£96?”
The Grapevine
“£12 per kilo overweight” “I've paid £44 for 2 cases of 40 kg! These two weigh 38 kg and you want to charge me extra?” “I'm sorry, each case can be up to 20 but you can't combine the weights.” “That's completely unreasonable!” “That's the rule.” Gritting his teeth Andrew forked out the money. At least the girl gave him good news on the guitar. Tagged as a musical instrument and handed in at boarding it would get extra care. Queuing to board Andrew realised that his eye was bothering him in a mild but persistent way. He thought he had put his contact-lens-cleaning kit in his case…or had he just planned to? Had he packed spare lenses? Would he be half-blind for the holiday? Even if the problem was just a grain of dirt he couldn't sort it until on-board. But on-board they waited and waited and waited. After 20 minutes the Captain explained that

French Air Traffic Controllers were doing unannounced wild-cat strikes. After 40 minutes he added that the flight time would have to be extended as an alternative route was put together. After an hour they took off. Andrew, with an itching eye and a stinging wallet was delighted to be airborne. Now, he thought, he would clean up his contact lens in the tiny toilet using the unpleasant but necessary spit-wash technique. Of course, all the other passengers had been waiting an hour too: there was a queue for the loo. He finally got in, extracted the lens and was balancing in front of the sink with it perched on his finger when he heard the Captain's piped voice: “Ladies and Gentlemen we are going to be experiencing turbulence. Please fasten your seatbelts. The toilets are presently out of use”.
because he always doubted his sister's crap old banger would get up the hill. He should have had oodles of time, but with all the delays this was no longer true. Where the hell was his guitar? By this time the crowd had vanished: there were 3 other people waiting. A huge contraption came through the rubber flaps – an electric wheelchair – and the disabled person's attendant stopped the carousel while they put it together. Andrew pressed the button to restart the carousel and at long last the 3 remaining items – which had been gently rained on for the quarter hour of wheelchair assembly – came in. They included Andrew's guitar. He was in time for the bus.
After a very relaxing two weeks, riding, walking, eating out, cooking BBQs, practising Spanish, dancing salsa…and playing guitar, it was time to go home. He approached the check-in desk with trepidation. This time he had carefully distributed the weight to be sure that each case was (just) under 20 kg. The desk-attendant looked disgustedly at the guitar case (19 kg). “Special equipment carries an additional charge. £75.” About 3 and ¾ hours later (no, he wasn't in the loo “It's not special equipment. It's a guitar. I brought the whole time), contact lens intact and in situ, it over as hold -luggage on the way out.” Andrew, disembarking from the plane and asked “I'm sorry Sir,” she said sounding not at all sorry. the stewardess where he should go to pick up his “There's nothing I can do.” “special care” guitar. She consulted a young man “Well, why wasn't it “special equipment” on the who disappeared and returned “Hurrah” with a way out? You'd already got your pound of flesh guitar. It was not Andrew's guitar. This drew through the extra weight charge and I've sorted blank surprise and then: “Oh, it must be on the that so you have to come up with this?” carousel then.” So much for special care. With a “I'm sorry Sir; there's nothing…” sinking feeling Andrew demanded “What if it's Andrew proceeded to throw a tantrum. “MOST not?” The stewardess looked hurt. “Well I'll still be RIDICULOUS…TOTAL ****ING RIPhere.” OFF…ABSOLUTE ***ING JOKE…MAFIA…He “Are you sure?” was loud. He was angry. He was right. But he was At which point the Captain, just emerging from going to get himself removed and prevented from the plane put in cheerily, “Oh, we're never sure of boarding. He calmed down, looked round to see anything!” himself the entertainment of a large and full airport, paid the money out and got on board. He went to the carousel. A stressed crowd cluttered the forecourt, issuing cries of delight A glutton for punishment, Andrew's coming out when they spotted their stuff. Andrew was, at this again this autumn. When he get's here he'll be point, worried about his onward journey. He had borrowing a guitar. planned to pick up the last bus to Cómpeta at 6:30, partly because he didn't really mind but mainly Rose Jones You've seen the Marx Brothers; Laurel and Hardy so you can imagine a man lurching from side to side in a ridiculous place, desperately keeping a magical small object still on one finger in spite of the forces of nature, while increasingly irate officials bang on the door. Kirsti Jantunen
K
irsti is an amazing women she and her husband have achieved plenty over the years. Now finally settled in Sayalonga, Kirsti can concentrate on her photography work whilst her husband enjoys spending time in their garden. Their land has 70 almond trees and Kirsti’s husband loves to work on the land building walls, terraces and picking olives. She explained “life is never boring we love it here”. Kirsti came into photography later on in life however she has always had artistic talent. This is displayed over the years in her working career. In 1972 Kirsti started a little shop in an old market hall in the centre of Helsinki. The shop was the first of its kind in Finland recycling old things and making them “new”. Within a year her husband came to work along side her too. Her husband had been working for his father in a book store where he had gained good commercial grounding. They worked well together, building up the business with his knowledge and her artistic talent. The shop sold handbags, trinkets, bracelets and other jewelry and ornamental items. Kirsti recycled aluminum and other metals to make these items, which she then painted and decorated. Often clients would bring her things to make “new” again or to make them match with their home or a specific dress. They widened the scope of their business to include old postcards and porcelain items. They imported artistic postcards from England, Germany, France and the USA. The business grew and grew, employing many workers and selling their items not just in their own shop but through many hundreds of other shops, warehouses, art museums and galleries in Finland. In 1980, Kirsti and her husband decided to set up a vegetarian restaurant as they were both vegetarians themselves. This business went well, but she acknowledged it was extremely hard work, so they eventually sold the restaurant. The shop business just kept getting bigger and Kirsti felt it was the right to separate herself from it and

do something she had always dreamed of, which was photography. A good photographer friend lent her everything she needed and taught her everything he knew; she rented a darkroom and went on various workshops to study photography. Meanwhile her husband started his wholesale trade business. They still joined together to visit the trade fairs in England, Germany, France and Asia. Kirsti went on to develop her own business organizing parties and using her artistic talents such as creating masks for dancers. She also displayed her photography work at many exhibitions in Finland often encompassing her travels. Kirsti and her husband enjoyed visits to Asia, Africa, South America, and Tasmania and later she often exhibit the photographs from these trips. Tiibet was one of these exhibitions and just at the time when China started to close monasteries. The largest postcard publisher in Finland approached Kirsti and her husband to see if they wanted to sell their company as they had become too big a competitor. Kirsti explained the business was too big for them now, with many workers and responsibilities that any large business entailed. They felt it was the right time to sell and look at retirement. So that is exactly what they did thus, making it possible to start another chapter in their lives in Spain in Sayalonga. Kristi joined the CompetArt group and exhibited her photographs in two walkabouts and now she is planning on an exhibition in Fuengirola. Kirsti explained since being in Spain she has now had to learn the digital way of developing prints and move with technology. However, she admitted that she preferred the old way still and missed her darkroom. You can see more of Kirsti’s work on www.competArt.com

Do you want to work from home? Retail Eyes is recruiting self-employed proof readers and mystery shopping researchers. SELF-EMPLOYED PROOF READERS Working from home, proof readers will be selfemployed and have very high standard of Spanish and English language comprehension skills. Previous experience of proof reading is preferred rather than essential, but excellent spelling and grammar skills are critical. Those appointed will need internet access, but will be able to choose hours of work to suit their own lifestyle. Work is available 24 hours a day. Retail Eyes is the world’s leading customer intelligence company that provides its clients with insights and feedback from their customers. This research helps these organisations make real improvements to the service they offer customers. Mystery shopper experiences go to clients in high quality reports and it’s vital that these are accurate, contain no mis-spellings or contradictions, grammatical errors or offensive commentary. This ensures that Retail Eyes clients can be confident that reports have been researched, written and proof-read by a dedicated team. Retail Eyes pays for each report read and the fee varies according the length of the questionnaire that shoppers submit. As a result, readers can choose the hours they work and therefore the amount they can earn. It should be noted that any specific quantities of work cannot be guaranteed and as self-employed, readers are responsible for declaring their income to the Inspector of Taxes and paying their own income tax and National Insurance. Anyone interested should email euapplication@retaileyes.co.uk in the first instance, detailing why this opportunity appeals, why they consider themselves suitable and include a CV. Suitable candidates will be invited to Retail Eyes’ offices in Milton Keynes to learn more about the company and its values. It will allow the company to get to know candidates and to ensure that its standards are met by way of some short tests. Subsequent training sessions take place in the Milton Keynes offices.

BECOME A MYSTERY SHOPPER No such thing as a free lunch? Well there is now!... It may sound too good to be true but Retail Eyes mystery shopper can get paid to do just that! From shopping to eating and drinking out, free memberships to heath clubs and even free nights in romantic hotels away from the kids, mystery shopping is a great way to earn extra cash quickly and easily. Retail Eyes uses members of the public to conduct the mystery visits, it requires no formal training and the whole system runs online so it’s easy to select only jobs of interest. It’s different from other jobs because many mystery visits can be incorporated into a normal day. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to give feedback to retailers so they can improve their customer service. It’s very flexible and a mystery shopper might decide to take a trip into the local shopping centre once the children have been dropped at school and visit one of Retail Eyes’ client’s shops or cafés. They could share a light lunch with friends at a variety of restaurants or even plan a night out with a partner and will receive reimbursement towards the purchases! Retail Eyes are moving into Europe with airport assignments currently available airside and landside. If you use Malaga airport then this is a great opportunity for you to have a coffee or a drink on us whilst waiting for your flight or waiting to collect family or friends. All Retail Eyes mystery shopping assignments are completed online following a simple step-bystep questionnaire. Reports are submitted in separate stages, so if there’s an interruption, the file can be saved and completed later. Anyone interested in becoming a Retail Eyes Mystery Shopper, should visit www.retaileyes.es register for free, and start shopping!

t is funny how some things stay with you; to this day I never swallow chewing gum as it “might get wrapped around my lungs” and similarly I cannot swallow grape pips because “a tree will grow inside of me”. Indeed, the wisdom of my parents has a lot to answer for; I now know that if I pull a funny face and the wind changes it will not get stuck like that as I have tried it (especially after a few pints). Of course, most of these pearls of wisdom had the intention of encouraging children to do something; I can see that “there are children starving in Africa” is a good piece of emotional blackmail used to make little Johnny eat his last Brussels sprout, just in case he wastes away between Mars bars, although by eating his sprout he won't actually save the lives of any starving children. And why would the fact that eating my crusts put hairs on my chest (although oddly this one has come true) make me finish off my sandwiches? I was born 10 years after the end of the war and food shortages and rationing was still a recent memory in 1965 so wasting not, wanting not was, and still is a natural instinct. This must have been why during my first ever company Christmas meal aged 16, I turned to my manager and asked “are you going to eat that roast potato Ken?” To this day I always clear my plate of food whether I am hungry or not and my reputation as

the human dustbin goes before me. It would appear that saying these things happen with age and often as a result of being a parent. I remember shocking myself the first time I ever told me son to do as he was told “because I said so”. This used to annoy me as a child as it seemed not to make any sense at all and yet when reasoning with a stroppy over-tired toddler it made all the sense in the world. With me being the son of a Scouser I always like to think of myself as a joker - you know, like a funny version of Jimmy Tarbuck - always ready with my quick wit, or more likely sarcastic comments. As I utter the same old jokes over and over again “Andy, can you turn the TV on?” Me “TV I love you” it is little wonder that the old jokes begin to wear thin to wife, friends and family. That said there is a certain familiarity to the same puns being said in response to certain cues. And these are the jokes and 45 minute long anecdotes I miss following my dad's stroke a couple of years ago. As he was 43 minutes into the story he would always say “anyway, to cut a long story short...” All households seem to have their own jargon and words to describe things. A good example of this

is the TV remote control. In my house it has always been the 'remote' but I have heard it called 'the zapper', 'the flicker' and 'the buttons'. A lot of sayings and name for things have regional derivations; for example in our house we had dinner at lunchtime and then tea in the evening. I can only presume this was due to my dad being a Scouser or my Nan thinking she was Welsh having been raised in Chepstow. She would proudly wear her daffodil on Saint David's day and used to love Harry Secombe. It was not until her funeral that the vicar stated that she was born in the Lake District. Thankfully I fought the urge to stand up cheer, but was reminded of the fact that I am a quarter Scottish by my dad when recounting the story to him. Heinz 57 varieties springs to mind! I could easily fill several articles with stories about my Nan. I still have this image of her stirring a mixing bowl with a 3-inch length of ash hanging precariously from the lit cigarette in her mouth over the soon to be cake. To my mind the ash never fell in, or maybe that is why her cakes tasted so, erm, different. This is the lady that covered her television with a towel so the man reading the 9 o'clock news could not see her annot

having a “strip-down wash” in front of her coal fire. I once arrived at her house to see her looking paler than usual and very preoccupied. I asked her what was wrong and she explained that there had been a little bird stuck up her chimney all day and the thought of it being stuck was making her feel “queer”. I listened intently before informing her that the chirping was the noise to tell her the battery needed changing in her smoke alarm. As my was a working mum (21 years part time working in the local Co-Op) I spent a lot of time with my Nan and cannot look at a vase without thinking of it as a “vorz” as she called it. My Nan also had a habit of bulk buying the same things over and over again, so that she was never short of a tin of Ambrosia creamed macaroni for example. This sprang to mind recently as I added another pack of tuna to the ever growing pile in my cupboard. Oh dear, I think it's started!

Costa Animal Society News KEEPING A DANGEROUS PET
RUMOURS, RUMOURS …
The UK's Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 has been in the news again recently with judges soon expected to published the first proposed sentencing guidelines for offences committed in England and Wales. Government figures show that more than 1,700 people in Britain were prosecuted in connection with dangerous dogs in 2010, with the number finally sentenced rising from 855 the previous year to 1,192. It is estimated that treating injuries inflicted by dogs costs Britain's National Health Service over £3 million annually.
Once again, the Costa Animal Society has become the victim of rumours which are quite untrue. This time, the story goes that CAS is taking its dogs out of the various commercial kennels around the area so that the owners can free up space for “paying guests.”
Articles in the British media on the subject have generated questions to the Costa Animal Society about which breeds are considered dangerous in Spain, and what steps owners must take to remain within the law. Breeds listed as dangerous by the authorities in Andalucía are Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileño, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu and Doberman.
CAS does not enjoy free space at any of the kennels in which its dogs are placed. Their board and lodgings must be paid for, just like every other dog which stays there. It's true that CAS is taking dogs out of kennels, but this is to save the organisation money. Kennel costs have historically been one of the charity's major expenses.
Owners of these breeds can only walk them in public if the dog wears a muzzle is kept on a short, unbreakable lead. The dog may not be walked in parks or in areas frequented by children. Owners must also be in possession of insurance which covers their civil responsibility for damage to third parties of at least 175,000 euros. The legislation also extends to other animals kept as pets which are considered to be dangerous, including tarantula spiders and piranha fish. Owners must also obtain a licence permitting to keep a dangerous pet. This can be obtained from the local town hall and applicants must present the following documents: a copy of their own identity document, a certificado de antecedents penales (certificate of criminal record to confirm there are no previous offences involving animals), the insurance policy for the animal, and the cartilla sanitaria (a vet's report on the dog's health). More information is available from Maureen on 600 716 363.

The Grapevine
Even worse, the rumour continues that, because there is nowhere for CAS to place these dogs, they are being put down. So, to put the record absolutely straight:
It is wholly untrue that the dogs which leave kennels are put down. As well as being against CAS's policy, it is illegal in Andalucía to put down a healthy animal. Luckily, CAS has a network of around 60 fosterers who take in dogs on a temporary basis until a permanent home can be found. Dogs which are taken out of kennels are placed with one of these fosterers where they are well cared for. If you could be a fosterer for CAS, please call the president, Wendy Thorne, for a no obligation chat on 95 203 7095. Tuesday January 10 Charity Quiz in aid of CAS at the M T Bar, Punta Lara, Nerja. ou can easily imagine the furore; a fireman near to the end of his shift decides he cannot be bothered to attend the 999 call to attend a blazing house. He just carries playing pool and watching TV. Then it emerges that said fireman is earning £286,000 per week after tax, instantly making him public enemy number 1. Of course this fireman does not exist; the facts however do and apply to Carlos Tevez, footballer and Manchester City player. Much has already been written about this incident, but is events like this that make you realise the world has gone mad. The average UK salary for a Registered Nurse is around £28,000 per annum, so as the saying goes, do the maths. Of course I am not totally naïve and understand that football these days is more and more about money, and though it galls me to say it Tevez is a wonderfully gifted player, but no man should be bigger than the team. Being a team game you are always going to need a mixture of your steady Bobby Moore-like players and skilful players like

George Best, who himself courted a substantial amount of controversy. Football is of course the sport where every player gives “110%”. When you earn as much as the modern players do I can see maths could get very confusing. A typical footballer's maths exam question might read something like this: You have been fined 2 weeks wages. How many days do you need to work to pay off your Super Injunction and buy a new Ferrari for the Mrs? Despite all of the money in football now not everybody is interested in it. When I told my football-phobic wife that since joining Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo had scored an amazing 106 goals in 103 games (the best scoring average in the history of the club) she looked at me nonplussed. Then, clearly unimpressed she asked “but isn't that his job?” Nowadays we have wall-to-wall football coverage. When I was a football obsessed teenager – I literally played 3 matches a week, trained 3 days

a week and on my day “off” I played football in the park with my mates – the only football we saw on TV apart from on Match of the Day were irregular highlights on Sportsnight, and if you missed it, that was it. This coverage of every “crucial” match like a glamour League Cup (or whatever it is called this year) tie between the likes of Scunthorpe and MK Dons means every foul, dive, swearing gets caught on TV and beamed into our homes. Did I mention swearing? Do not get my started on Wayne Rooney, another great player but ultimately an overpaid oik. Football gives millions of underprivileged kids a dream that one day they could make it and be famous; it is surely part of the appeal. Working class lad made good, but please not working class lad made a millionaire who swears at the camera on live TV and / or kicks other players because he got tackled. These are the type of unsavoury actions that will be mimicked in the playground, during training and then eventually in matches. I remember talking to my older nephew a few years back who gleefully told me he had scored a hattrick that day but the best goal was the penalty that he had won by taking a dive in the box and kidding the referee. Diving has now evolved of course and now includes rolling around in agony like you have been shot in a bid to get the innocent opposing player sent off. The game is huge business now and when I go to see my nephews, who are aged 10 and 12, you can see all the youngsters in their Nike and Adidas football boots turning up for the match in £35 replica shirts and tracksuits and those silly Lycra tops worn under a short-sleeved shirt. But I see more and more club shirts worn these days as the popularity of national teams seems to have waned. Recently when England played against

Montenegro, a game they had to get a point from to qualify for the European Championship finals, not one of the people I questioned said they were going to watch it. Rather they had an invitation to dinner, a hedge to trim, or a freshly painted wall to watch dry. I did not watch it either and secretly wanted them to lose so that the overpaid idiots would not let us down again in a tournament. One of the aforementioned overpaid idiots that I am not a fan of is John Terry, Chelsea player and England captain. This is the captain that at the time of writing is facing an investigation into allegedly racially abusing another player and previously had an affair with a team-mate's wife. What a fine role-model he is. As a youngster (god, how old do I sound?) I would buy Shoot! magazine and read about my then heroes. One feature was a mini profile about a player with in-depth questions like Favourite Food, the answer to which was always Steak and chips. Favourite drink - beer. Car – Ford Capri etc. How times have changed. Not all players fit the stereotype I have outlined in this article. Some never make the headlines for the wrong reasons and always give 100%. A great example of this is Scott Parker, the current Footballer of the Year. I write this as a West Ham fan despite his recent move to Tottenham. Parker is the type of player that should be held up as an example to young football fans. He would never refuse to play and has in the past played whilst injured. In fact I bet he still drives a Capri (3 litre Ghia of course)! Andy Wilkes

At the heart of the 'wine route' in Competa is the 'wine museum'. Decorated with Andalusian charm, it has recovered the warm, friendly ambience of the wine cellars with its braced arches, brick columns and seasoned wood. Along with the delicious muscatel wines, dry, sweet, young and mature, made from the Rome variety of muscatel grapes, the local gastronomy includes the best cooked meat and sausages in the district, black puddings, pork loin, chorizo sausage, which you can buy together with other typical products like honey, raising, figs, olive oil, ceramics and rugs, in the 'wine museum' ..... A charming place.

BU-BOOM.... TISH!
AUSTRALIA
The Grim Reaper came for me last night, but I managed to beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Blimey, talk about Dyson with death.
A young Portsmouth woman was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the sea, but just before she could throw herself from the wharf, a handsome young man stopped her.
They've opened a new shop across the road selling camouflage clothing but I have my suspicions something weird is going on. Yesterday I saw 20 people go in but I never saw anyone coming out. I've been on the phone for ages trying to book tickets for an Elvis tribute act, but it keeps asking me to press 1 for the money, 2 for the show...... I just brought a friend of mine a new fridge, should have seen his face light up when he opened it A friend of mine moved into a new house at the weekend so I took him over a couple of radiators. Just a little house warming present. I've just heard the window cleaner shouting and swearing outside my house. I think he's lost his rag. I went to my allotment last week and found someone had covered it with 2 inches of soil. I went again yesterday only to find it covered again with another 2 inches of soil. The plot thickens!!! A mate of mine recently admitted to being addicted to brake fluid. When I quizzed him on it he reckoned he could stop any time..... I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin... 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it... I thought to myself, these idiots have lost the plot!! A new middle east crisis erupted last night as Dubai Television was refused permission to broadcast 'The Flintstones'. A spokesman for the channel said....'A claim was made that people in Dubai would not understand the humour, but we know for a fact that people in Abu Dhabi Do.' My son's been asking me for a pet spider for his birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70!!! B*ll*cks to this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not happy.
"You have so much to live for," said the man. "I'm a sailor, and we are off to Australia tomorrow. I can stow you away on my ship. I'll take care of you, bring you food every day, and keep you happy." With nothing to lose, combined with the fact that she had always wanted to go to Australia , the woman accepted. That night the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a small but comfortable compartment in the hold. From then on, every night he would bring her three sandwiches, a bottle of red wine, and make love to her until dawn. Two weeks later she was discovered by the captain during a routine inspection. "What are you doing here?" asked the captain. "I have an arrangement with one of the sailors," she replied. "He brings me food and I get a free trip to Australia ." "I see," the captain says. Her conscience got the best of her and she added, "Plus, he's screwing me." "He certainly is," replied the captain. "This is the Isle of Wight Ferry.”

Sierra Nevada Ski Resort S
ierra Nevada is one of the most well prepared stations I've seen yet. I hope this Organisation is an example for future Championship events in other countries" Agostino Omini, Vice President, International Cyclists Union, after the 2000 Bike Championships The Sierra Nevada ski resort is located at Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada mountains! This is Europe's most southerly ski resort and it is small in comparison to other European resorts. However, the facilities are considered top-rate and it has hosted numerous national and international ski and snowboard events. The Sierra Nevada ski resort has numerous runs of varying difficulties to satisfy all levels of skiers. Natural snow is supplemented by snow cannons on some runs, and many skiers are pleasantly surprised to find that, because of its southerly position, the air temperature is usually warmer than other resorts. Depending on the snow levels, the season generally runs from the end of November or the beginning of December until sometime in April. There is a surprisingly active nightlife in the Sierra Nevada resort. Spaniards have a reputation for being night owls and this it often attributed to a hot climate that encourages people to lie low during the day and come out only once the cool of the evening has set in. However, the winter scene at Sierra Nevada contradicts this or at least proves that old habits are hard to break. Most skiiers and visitors to Sierra Nevada come from Spain - mainly Madrid and the cities of Andalucía. According to the statistics from 2009/2010, over 90 per cent of those using the facilities at the ski station were Spanish. Out of the foreigners skiing in Sierra Nevada last season, 6 per cent were British.

Plan carefully your ski holiday in Sierra Nevada, keeping in mind that the last week of February children from schools across Andalucia have one week off school, presumably to enjoy the snow and go skiing, which is why it's called "White Week" (Semana Blanca). Most children don't actually get to go skiing, but February is reported to be one of the busiest months, so beware. Also, as would be expected weekends and banks holidays are. HOW TO GET THERE The Sierra Nevada ski resort and ski station are easily accessible from both Granada or Málaga provinces. From Granada, it is 45 minutes by car or bus from Granada´s Estacion de Autobuses just south-east of Granada city, the provincial capital. It is about one hour from the airport. Visitors should also consider visiting the attractions in Granada city. If you're coming from Málaga airport, the ski station is about two hours driving and is not difficult to find if you head north, following the first to Granada and then to the Sierra Nevada "Estación de Ski". ACCOMMODATION The Sierra Nevada is a top class ski resort and the most southerly and highest ski station in Spain, with more than 75 pistes, some at over 2,500 metres, where it is usually possible to ski from mid November through to late April. There are two principal areas: Borreguiles has the ski schools, cable car stations and main ski lifts; Pradollano is the ski village, with hotels, restaurants, shops and holiday apartments. Parking is at a premium though, so check out availability when you rent your apartment, and don't forget to drive there with chains on your tyres. As for 'après ski', from small intimate tapas bars to larger, international restaurants, the Sierra Nevada caters for all budgets and culinary tastes.

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA Griñán also used his visit to the fiesta to announce 1 billion € for loans and guarantees for businessmen in the region. He said he would be supporting businessmen as ‘now money is not circulating and there is no business financing’. PRESIDENT OF THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCÍA PROMISES LAW TO REGULATE ILLEGAL PROPERTY IN JANUARY The President of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, speaking in Torrox has said that the Junta will be approving a decree to regulate illegal homes at the start of next year. Reports indicate the legislation could be passed on January 10 and will affect those homes built on non-buildable land. ‘It needs very serious reports, because we are talking about thousands and thousands of homes’, he said. It’s estimated that there are dozens of thousands of such homes in areas such as Almanzora in Almería and in the Axarquía in Málaga. Griñán was in Torrox for the Fiesta de las Migas, and told journalists that the legislation was ‘very complex’ and has needed reports from the Andalucía Consultative Council and the Social and Economic Council. He said that it would be a decree which would affect the general interest.

About 30,000 portions of migas were handed out free to the public in what was the 30th edition of the fiesta. The breadcrumbs were as popular as ever, but as the President of the Junta probably noted, times are hard.
MERIENDA IN HERRADURA Residents in la Herradura held a ‘merienda’ with chocolate and churros, to raise funds for the three wise men procession on January 5. More than 200 litres of hot chocolate were handed out and the best procession ever is hoped for. NERJA SAYS TORROX WILL NOT HAVE THE LOCAL MARINA. Nerja Town Hall has said that it is not true that the Junta de Andalucia has given the goahead for a marina in Torrox, as announced by Mayor Francisco Muñoz.
The Nerja councillor for Infrastructures, Antonio Garcia, explained that the information they had received from the Andalucian Public Port Agency is “nothing like” the declarations made by Torrox Mayor, and that the Ministry for the Environment is yet to make a decision regarding the exact location of the marina. The socialist mayor of Torrox had said that the Ministry had chosen the town as the ideal location out of the four proposed, which would mean the marina would be built in the Calaceite area. Nerja town hall, governed by the conservative Partido Popular, has requested meetings with the Port Agency and the Ministry, and suspect that the declarations were made in hopes of gaining votes in the upcoming Andalucian Elections. However, Garcia said that the Junta could have developed the marina in the area since 1983, but has done nothing so far.
DEBATE CONTINUES ON A POSSIBLE EXPANSION OF SIERRA NEVADA SKI RESORT Debate is continuing over a possible extension to the Sierra Nevada ski resort, with tourism chiefs keen to open a study into the possibility. However ecologists are against any expansion and the Junta de Andalucía has said it will ‘reflect’ on the matter.
