ow that over 800 kilos of drugs have been taken from headquarter offices and judicial deposits in four years, the authorities say it's time to react. Recent drug robberies from the authorities in Andalucía include 154 kilos of cocaine and heroin taken from prison cells in the basement of a Sevilla police station. A corrupt agent in UDYCO Unit Against Delinquency and Organised Crime is alleged to have taken some drugs each weekend using his rucksack. He carried out the drugs with the help of an accomplice and both are now being held in preventative prison.

rish airline Ryanair is reducing its number of flights to Spain next summer by 12%, it is doing so because of the increase in the airport taxes seen principally in Madrid and Barcelona where it is reflected in a 40% increase in the price of a ticket. The company says the increase in aviation fuel makes it impossible to make a profit. The increase in tax in those two airports is four times the average of the 170 airports which Ryanair operates from, and in Barajas the Irish airline will reduce its flights by 23%, cutting the number of flights by 179. 120 jobs will be lost. The airline says that it will lose 4.5 million passengers and 4,500 direct employees, while the Spanish Airport, AENA, predicts it will make a loss in their income of 25 million €. Ryanair now plans to increase the number of its flights outside Spain by 4% in 2013 and the airline considers this will obtain profits of between 490 and 520 million €.

he Government vicepresident, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, has said due to the situation in the treasury is not possble to increase pensions at the November inflation rate. It’s a tradition in Spain that the pension payment is increased ever year, and the November inflation figure tis used to fix the following pensions index in January. But this year it will not be possible due to an IPC inflation rate in November up 2.9%. There is an exception to this for pensioners who now earn less than 1000 €. They will be paid the 2% higher pension, but those who earn more than the 1000 € will see just a 1% rise in their payments. Included in the higher category and estimated to be 74% of the pension population are those who suffer from disability, are in retirement, and those who are now widows or widowers. Employment Minister, Fátima Báñez, said it has been a ‘difficult and responsible decision’. She said that the pensioners of today and those of tomorrow have their pensions guaranteed.

The baby had been delivered by winchman paramedic Marcus Wigfull 10 minutes earlier. he Panamanian woman, 33, known only as Yeraldina, claimed that drug traffickers had forced her to undergo surgery to implant the bags of the class A drug under her skin. She was stopped on arrival at Barcelona's El Prat airport earlier this month after an overnight flight from Bogata, Colombia when police became suspicious at her answers to routine questions. During a body search they discovered a blood-soaked bandage covering recent wounds across her chest. She told officers she had recently undergone cosmetic surgery on her breasts but they sent her to hospital for further examination where she is now recovering. Doctors discovered implants made from a total of 1.3 kgs (2.9lb) of the drug - with a street value around 100,000 euros (ÂŁ80,000) - sealed in plastic bags. The woman "had two breast implants containing cocaine implanted in her. She had two open cuts under each of her breasts. It was the first time police officers have discovered drugs smuggled in the breasts of woman, Spain's Interior Ministry said.

esearchers discovered a tropical male fish that becomes more attractive to females when it displays homosexual behaviour. Scientists believe homosexuality is widespread throughout the animal kingdom. But it can be puzzling since males that prefer same sex relations father fewer offspring than their heterosexual counterparts. Research has shown the female Atlantic molly (Poecilia mexicana) prefer mating partners whom they saw having sex with a female - a phenomenon called mate copying. This also occurred when males interacted sexually with another male, according to the findings published in Biology Letters. Male fish can therefore increase their attractiveness towards females by displaying homosexual behaviour and thereby improve their chances of future heterosexual mating, the scientists believe.

FOCUS ON...SAN SEBASTIAN TAMBORRADA The famous drumming festival

a Tamborrada festival is a traditional drum playing festival celebrated in San Sebastian, Spain and throughout other regions in Spain. During the Tamborrada Festival the city of San Sebastian becomes a defeaning place as it comes alive with hundreds of thousands of beating drums that play throughout the streets the 24 hours that the 20th of January lasts. The hand crafted drums are made of many different sizes and are normally classified as barrel or military style drums. These drum celebrations that take place throughout Spain usually originate from military, religious or festive ceremonies. The San Sebastian Tamborrada has a military origin.

The San Sebastian Tamborrada is held on the 20th of January to celebrate the town’s patron, Saint Sebastian. The events actually begin at zero (00:00) hours on 20th with the raising of the city’s flag in the Plaza of the Constitution. Several different group representatives begin to play the San Sebastain March, written by Raimundo Sarriegui, as well as other popular compositions. Hundreds of drum group companies take part in the event, each made up of 20 to 50 military drums and 50 to 100 barrel drums as they parade through the city streets pounding out their songs accompanied by music on the 20th of January. The drummers of the Tamborrada festival in San Sebastian dress up as either military drummers from

the Napoleonic period or cooks. The loud Tamborrada festival continues for 24 hours until midnight on the eve of the 21st. There are special events for children in the morning and throughout the 24 hour celebration many important prizes are given out, including the “Tambor de Oro” prize. The San Sebastian Tamborrada tradition is said to have originated in 1720 when a baker began singing while filling barrels at a fountain near the San Vicente church. Some young girls passed by and joined in on the fun by banging on some barrels. Soon, a crowd had formed and an impromptu jam session began which, over time, evolved into the San Sebastian Tamborrada festival as we know it today.

Yes, that is a generalisation – of course some people get drunk. But gross excess and all the negative baggage it brings is limited, without recourse to price fixing, because the culture encourages moderation and respects good wine. If you know the wine is special you want to be sober enough to taste it! And Málaga is rich with vineyards that make wines worth taking the trouble to find and enjoy.

We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions, I’m afraid, are not immune. However, especially for promises that include improving our health it’s in our best interest to not take them lightly. So, what’s the secret to successful resolutions? While you can’t wave a magic wand and make your resolution come true, there are some easy steps to take to make it easier to fulfill your promise to yourself. Choose an obtainable goal. Resolving to look like a super model is not realistic for the majority of us, but promising to include daily physical activity in our lives is very possible.

Avoid choosing a resolution that you’ve been unsuccessful at achieving year after year. This will only set you up for failure, frustration and disappointment. If you are still tempted to make a promise that you’ve made before, then try altering it. For example, instead of stating that you are going to lose 30 pounds, try promising to eat healthier and increase your weekly exercise. Create a game plan. At the beginning of January, write a comprehensive plan. All successful businesses start with a business plan that describes their mission and specifics on how they will achieve it. Write your own personal plan and you’ll be more likely to succeed as well. Break it down and make it less intimidating. Rather than one BIG end goal, dissect it into smaller pieces. Set several smaller goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you to reach the ultimate goal. Then even if you aren’t able to reach your final goal, you will have many smaller, but still significant, achievements along the way. For example, if

Reward yourself with each milestone. If you’ve stuck with your resolution for 2 months, treat yourself to something special. But, be careful of your reward type. Syllabub, Hot Chocolate and Ice Cream might set your taste buds going but there are also wonderful hues and shades that will delight your eyes – Burgundy Ice, Blue Moon, A Whiter Shade of Pale and Heart of Gold to name but a few. And, of course, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ll have some romantic reds – Deep Secret, Velvet Fragrance and Moment in Time.

I know that many of you don’t think of roses as very typical of our Mediterranean gardens yet roses have a long, illustrious and floriferous history in Spain. The genus rosa is believed to have originated in central Asia some 60 to 70 million years ago and, from there, spread over the entire Northern hemisphere. According to history it was those fabulous gardeners, the Moors, that

introduced the rose as an ornamental into Spain, as can be seen by traditional plantings in the Alhambra and Generalife gardens in Granada, thus starting a 1000 year history of the rose in Spain. But, according to legend, San Jordi bravely slayed a huge dragon that was terrorising the people and the blood of the dying dragon created a red rosebush. The feast day of San Jordi, in Barcelona, is annually celebrated by throwing red roses. Either version is full of romance and fascination – a fitting entry for the rose into Spain. I always find that roses grow prolifically here and flower over an exceptionally long period, if you choose repeat flowerers. They’ll often grow much taller than in Northern Europe so, when you deadhead, it’s advisable to cut the stem down by about one third otherwise you could end up with a rose bush of tree-like proportions! Regular deadheading will increase flowering; remember that any plant that is allowed to go to seed will stop flowering. Equally, annually prune your bush really hard, back to about 10cm, and now, early January, is the perfect time to do this.The thorny question of pruning is simpler than it sounds and - take heart – no matter how badly you do it, you will not kill your rose! Conventionally, you always prune to an outward facing bud. Cut out dead, crossing, weak wood and any growing into the centre of the plant. Increasing air circulation avoids disease. With climbers, prune flowering shoots back to three buds, leaving the main framework (normally three or five stems) in place. Ramblers can be left alone, unless you want to shorten them back. But, above all, don’t worry about it all too much – lots of rose growers nowadays just take a hedge trimmer to their plants. No finesse but lots of flowers! Most of the really old-fashioned

roses have fabulous perfume with soft pretty looks but many are not repeat flowering and can be martyrs to disease. Breeders then went the route of repeat flowering, often big and brash, with good disease resistance and no perfume! Luckily, we can now have the best of both worlds; a melange of beauty, perfume, disease resistance and a long flowering period. Often these latest hybrids are softer, more flexible bushes too so we can easily blend them into mixed plantings instead of having rows of formal rose beds – great looking in their season but very bare and gawkish in the winter. One of my favourite combinations is acanthus with roses. The exotic jagged leaves of the acanthus pierce the ground as the roses are starting to go past their best. The lush winter greenery, made even more spectacular by the towering flower spikes in early spring, hides the bareness of the roses during the winter months. Then, as your roses are coming into full flower, the acanthus bows out, disappearing underground for the summer and allowing the roses centre stage. Billowing mounds of lavender interspersed with roses is a great and well-used combo too, both for scent and looks. Before your roses go to bed for the winter, do give them a fungicidal spray. Although I find that fungal and viral problems are probably less here because of the drier climate, stressed roses can still succumb to black spot, rust, mildew etc. A weekly spraying with neem oil will prevent this, or apply a copper fungicide now so that the spores do not overwinter in your roses. Ensure that you also clear away all fallen leaves which can harbour infection too During the winter, if you see purple/black streaks in shoots, prune them out as it is an indicator of black spot within the plant. Mulch your plants to retain moisture – especially if they are growing against or near to walls –

compost, bark chippings, sawdust or rotted leaf litter are all useful and feed them generously and regularly during the growing season. Strong plants are healthy plants. GRILLED DUCK WITH REDCURRANT SAUCE Recipe by Andy Wilkes, Sugar and Spice and www.ingredient.es

his rich and tasty recipe is relatively easy and is one which will convince your friends or family that you have been toiling in the kitchen for hours. Ingredients 4 to 6 whole duck breasts Marinade: 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 200ml dry red wine

Add the duck breasts, turning to coat all sides then place in a refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight. Redcurrant Sauce: 60g unsalted butter 1 small jar red currant jelly 4 tablespoons tomato ketchup 60g brown sugar, packed Preparation Melt the butter in a small sauce pan.

Heat until the jelly melts and the mixture boils (it has to boil). Grill the breasts for 5 minutes per side. Meat should be rare to medium rare. Carve into 1/4 inch slices, cutting across grain. Serve with the redcurrant sauce and vegetables of your choice. Serves 4 to 6.

Stir in the jelly, ketchup and brown sugar.

It was fun to watch the Mayor, the Priest and 7 representatives from Cartitas enjoying a good laugh Friday night, despite the fact they couldn’t understand much. We had a few nightmares along the way, but we were not going to give up at any point, it had to happen. ART EXHIBITIONS Local artist Margaret Riordan has two small art exhibitions currently running until spring 2013, one in café bar Sands &

Co near the lighthouse on Torrox costa, open 12 noon until late every day (not thurs) and another exhibition at bar Choto Playa at Peñoncillo beach, Torrox Costa, (not tues). She is a self-taught artist (retired secretary) and was born in Bristol, England, and has been painting and drawing all her life. She has entered many competitions with success at local and national level and over 300 of her works have been sold throughout the Uk, Europe and North America.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION FOR CLEANER STREETS Around 200 proposals from residents in Torrox were collected by the town hall. They are being considered by the authorities for their forthcoming environmental plans. Most of the proposals were concerned about recycling, street cleaning and repairs, how to prevent pet disposals on public places, etc. There were also ideas for bringing Ferrara beach back to normal.

SIERRA NEVADA Sierra Nevada opened two days ahead of schedule for its 2012/2013 season. In the presence of the top two Spanish snow athletes; snow boarder Regino Hernandez and ski racer Maria Jose Rienda at the Andalucían Institute of Sport, The Minister of Culture and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía revealed the ski resort was open on Thursday November 29. These two days were offered to the public at a discounted rate of €30 for a ski pass. Also, from March 18 to 26, Sierra Nevada will host the Snowboard World Cup and Freestyle, for which 25 channels from around the world have bought the television rights to. .

BUSINESS PROMOTION A Centre for business promotion in the Axarquia will be opened in Torre del Mar. The €1.47 million effort by the Malaga provincial government will sited at the old sugar factory building. Regional tourism, handicrafts, agriculture and gastronomy business sectors will be promoted through this new initiative. Along with VelezMalaga’s, the town halls of Nerja, Rincon de la Victoria, Torrox and Algarrobo are also involved. Out of the overall investment, nearly €990,000 will be allocated to the premises, while €440,000 will go for training courses and workshops. The latter will be about international business, management, entrepreneur promotion, and technological innovation. Some additional €40,000 will be invested on a business market report.
