Spanish pensioner was killed after a woman thought to be suffering from depression fell from an apartment balcony on top of him as he sat on a street bench below. The woman survived the fall in Alicante, after what appears to have been a suicide attempt. The 81-year-old pensioner is thought to have died instantly when he was struck by the body of the 48-year-old woman. Witnesses said she had jumped off the seventh-floor balcony of her home. The woman was taken to Alicante’s San Juan hospital suffering from serious injuries, but she was reported to be in a stable condition. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the man’s death. The pensioner’s 85-year-old widow was also taken to hospital suffering from shock after her husband’s death. The bench where the couple had been sitting was badly damaged from the force of the impact.Five years ago a similar incident saw an old woman killed in the city of Malaga after an 18-year-old woman jumped out of her apartment in a suicide attempt, only to break her fall on the passer-by. The young woman survived the fall. In 2009 a 50-year-old man died in Viladecans, near Barcelona, when a woman leapt out of her eightfloor apartment and landed on top of him in the street below. In this case, the woman attempting

father-and-daughter couple are battling with Spanish social services to regain the custody of a baby they had as a result of their incestuous relationship. The couple from Majorca claim they are being victimised due to their unusual relationship - which is not illegal in Spain - and that authorities have removed the baby, born in midNovember, because they have made a moral judgment. “They tell you that this relationship is not good for the baby. They told us it is immoral and that what we have done is wrong, although on paper they put something else because legally they cannot say they are taking the girl away because it is an immoral relationship”, the father of the new-born, identified only as Cris, told the local newspaper Crónica Balear. Majorcan authorities have said that they refused to allow the couple to take the baby home from the hospital where she was born because of fears for the child’s well being. “If there is no risk to the child, the relationship between the parents is irrelevant. Incest is not a crime in Spain and is not considered a cause of danger or risk towards the child”, a spokesperson for the IMAS Mallorca social services department said.
postman has been arrested in Spain after it was found that he had been hoarding thousands of undelivered letters, including medical prescriptions and driving licences. The man had gathered in total more than 3,200 letters over a 10-year period before he was dismissed from his job as a postman in the Alicante area earlier this year. Police in Alicante said on Wednesday that they had arrested the man on suspicion of breaching his duties of care and confidentiality after finding the stash of correspondence at his home in the town of Alcoy. The authorities are continuing to investigate whether the pilfering postie was motivated by spite, personal gain or simply acted out of an irrational desire to hoard the letters, which included court notices, voting cards, bills and other official missives, dating between 2004 until early 2014.

wealthy British businessman who killed an alleged German paedophile in an exclusive Spanish expat resort after catching him taking photographs of his young children will not go to jail despite being found guilty of manslaughter, Spanish judicial sources have told The Telegraph. Estate agent Devinder Kainth was given a sixmonth jail sentence after admitting that he had killed Sandro Rottman by punching him at a restaurant in the upmarket area of Sotogrande, near Gibraltar. He had discovered that the 43-year-old German socialite had pictures on his iPad of Mr Kainth’s young daughter, taken without permission. The 39-year-old Kainth was eating at the resort’s Spinnaker restaurant in February of 2015 with his glamorous partner Gemma Hawkins and their three children - two young sons and a daughter - when an argument started over the images on Mr Rottman’s tablet, leading to the British man punching the German several times in the head.

the cost per year was far higher for obese people than their thinner counterparts up to age 56 and that the extra cost for healthier people was associated with “life years gained.” Isn’t It better to live longer and spread out all those physician than avoid the healthy lifestyle and pass your days sitting around in the doctor’s waiting room! For your Kids and Grandkids: We want to be there for all of our children’s milestones — the proms, graduations, weddings and births of your grandchildren.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STAYING HEALTHY Just a little reminder for the New Year
W
e know by now that we need to work out, need to eat the right foods and do stuff that is “healthy for us,” but sometimes its easy to lose sight of what we’re doing this all for. Live Longer: There is a huge body of evidence suggesting that healthy living — both in terms of exercising, eating well, and staying on top of health screenings and physicians visits — can keep you living healthy and living longer! It has been found that people who exercise regularly, drink alcohol only in moderation, consume a nutritious diet and avoid smoking can tack an additional 14 years on to their life expectancy. Thrive in old age: Living to 100 really isn’t going to matter if, at that age, you are bedridden and unable to enjoy the fruits of your labours! We need to stay healthy so that when we’re blowing out the candles at our centennial celebration, we are able to throw some shapes on the

dance floor after!
Confidence: Remember the way that you feel after completing that long run? After lifting your personal best at the gym? You are sweaty and worn out and still feeling so darn good! And that feeling carries over and translates into the way you present yourself as well as how you are seen by others.
More Energy: It might seem strange that when you are feeling fatigued, you should go exercise, but the reality is working out – be it a quick walk around the block or participating in a excercise class can give you the kick that you need to keep going through the day. Exercise stimulates the release of feel-good endorphins that not only make you feel better but also up your energy levels.
Look Better: There’s a mountain of undergarments — for both men and women — that can help you look better in your clothes, whether its padding out certain areas or sucking in others. However, when it’s you only filling out those jeans it just feels so much better. In addition, leading a healthy lifestyle can also improve the appearance of your skin, teeth and nails and give you that certain glow that makes you look great!
Avoid Disease/Illness: Influenza Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help reduce free radicals as well as promote the release of toxins associated with disease and infections. A healthy lifestyle helps stave off high blood pressure, promote healthy cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of diabetes, and keep your heart in shape!
Better Mental Health: It has been found that exercising for 30 minutes, three times a week can help an estimated 60% of patients overcome their depression without using antidepressant medications. In addition, exercise can give you the time you need to relax, take a break and deal with the problem at hand!

plan to swim for a solid half hour. "Four minutes later, they're inevitably hanging onto the edge, feeling completely defeated. That's because training in water requires your cardiovascular system and muscles to work differently than they do on land. Your lungs have to adjust to a new way of breathing (you can't suck in air anytime you want like with dry-land workouts, and unlike any other form of exercise, swimming requires every muscle in your body to work as a team to keep you moving and staying afloat.

A
pool might not be the first place you think of going when you're looking to shape up and slim down—but perhaps it should be. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than a swimming workout. When researchers have compared recreational fitness swimmers with non-swimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips. And while swimming may not offer the lace-up-your-shoes-and-go convenience of running, all you need are three key items—swimsuit, cap, and goggles—and you're set to hit the water. So go ahead: Make a splash! Why Water Works The body-shaping benefits of swimming workouts are the result of a perfect storm of calorie burn and muscle recruitment. An easy swim burns around 500 calories an hour, while a vigorous effort can torch almost 700. And because water is nearly 800 times denser than air, each kick, push, and pull is like a mini resistance workout for your entire
12 The Grapevine
body—especially your core, hips, arms, shoulders, and glutes. So in addition to blasting calories as you swim, you build lean muscle, which ignites your metabolism so that you burn more calories once you've showered and dried off. The irony is that while swimming makes you lean and mean, it's also kind to your body. Water basically neutralizes gravity, so you become virtually weightless when immersed, giving your joints a much-needed vacation. You can swim almost every day without risking injury. You can't say the same for running or strength training." And that makes swimming something you can do for your entire life—a major bonus because it can literally help you stay younger: Research shows that habitual swimmers are biologically up to 20 years younger than their actual age. Research has revealed that a swimmer's blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system, and cognitive functioning are all comparable to someone far younger.
The key to an effective swim routine is splitting it into shorter segments, mixing in a variety of work and rest intervals, and using different strokes, drills, and intensities. t's not only more interesting but also a better workout. Don't worry that you're wasting time by taking rest breaks. Swimming isn't like walking, during which your heart rate drops quickly. It stays raised for at least 30 seconds after a few lap. Try this starter workout: Swim four lengths of the pool at an easy effort (catch your breath at the wall between lengths if you need to). Rest for 30 seconds. Repeat five to 10 times. Try that two or three times a week for the first two weeks. If you haven't swam for a while, use a kickboard for the first four lengths. It will help you get used to swimming without having to coordinate your arms and legs. Competa Pool Now Open Mon-Fri: 09.30-13.00 & 16.30-21.00 Sat: 09.30 - 13.00 .

AN INTERVIEW WITH BETTY BOWDERY Interviewed and written by Deborah Haywood
I
have recently had the fortune of visiting Competa, a Spanish village, high up in the Almijara Mountains in Andalucia. This summer I was introduced to Betty Bowdery, a lady who has, together with her husband Ken, been semi resident in the village for 32 years. Listening to Betty's stories of Competa over the years gave me the idea of sharing her adventures with Grapevine readers. I hope that you all enjoy this interview as much as I did. Betty tell me how did you first discover Competa? Answer: We were driving along the coast road to Mojacar when there was a sand storm. The driving conditions were not good and I didn't feel well. We looked at the map to plan an escape route and spotted Competa. We drove through Sayalonga and decided to stay for a few days. The next day we drove up to Competa giving two people a lift at the same time. One of our passengers was a priest who offered us the chance to climb the church tower. We did so and we were immediately sold on the village. What made you decide to choose to buy property in
14 The Grapevine
Competa as opposed to any other Spanish village? Answer: After climbing the church tower we went for dinner. Ken felt unwell and we decided to stay overnight at the Fonda, a B&B in the Plaza de Almijara, known locally as "The Square". We met some people that evening who told us that they had just bought a property to renovate in the village. This set the seed and the following day we contacted a local estate agent who initially showed us around his house and a couple of properties in the Campo. The Campo felt quite remote and after voicing our concerns with Stein, the estate agent, we were shown around Calle JosĂŠ Antonio 31, a property that was in need of major renovation. It had one cold tap and an electric light. We bought it! Stein was in shock and he kept checking with us that we really wanted to go through with the sale. What was Competa like then? Did it differ much from today's village? Answer: (Betty laughs) in 1983 we moved to Calle JosĂŠ Antonio 32 in order to accommodate our growing family. (A family which is still growing today. Betty has 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren). Number 32
had no floors, no ceilings, a manger and even a bodega for the donkey. You could smell the goats in the air! There were only 4 cars in the village and so most people travelled by mule as their means of transport. The village itself was very Spanish. There was only one restaurant, Perico's, in the Square unlike today's restaurants which offer their own individual culinary delights. The local people were not used to independent women and you would not see ladies of the older generation out enjoying themselves in the Square and surrounding bars and restaurants as you do today. Betty you clearly love the village. What makes you love it so much? Answer: The Square is what makes Competa. It sets it apart from the other villages in the area. It is a central meeting place with a church, bank and lots of restaurants. It's got an ambiance and the Spanish people are very welcoming and tolerant. I love the freedom that Competa offers me. Once in the village I am able to walk around, meet up with friends, shop in the bazaars and, of course, the Saturday morning market for anything and everything I need. The traffic is controlled and it is safe to go out independently at night. People eat out later in Spain and as a result the days seem a lot longer. Betty have you ever considered making a permanent move to Competa? Answer: No, I've had the best of both worlds. I've visited Competa and had lovely holidays in quality time and I've been at home, in England, to see my children and grandchildren grow up. They are also enjoying the family house in Competa, a house which Ken and I discovered all those years ago

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ACTION FOR ANIMALS We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. 2015 was an amazing year for us and culminated in a recordbreaking success at the Cómpeta Christmas Market, when we raised a whopping great 1117.25 . We'd like to thank all our volunteers who worked so hard to make the day such a success and everyone who came to support us. Special thanks to Sandiey for organising everything so brilliantly and to Kevin Deavin, who once again managed to encourage the entire village to buy our raffle tickets. And of course, a huge thank you to Santa for being there at his busiest time of year.

cold or dust, and ignoring these early symptoms can be dangerous. Health issues due to such mould may turn out to be very serious if no action is taken against its growth. Some of the symptoms of these types of mould are stuffy and runny nose, difficulty while breathing, throat irritation and headache. There can be many other allergic reaction of mould exposure, but it is advisable that you consult a doctor to know the exact cause of the allergy. In some cases, people may feel congested as soon as they get in contact with such mould or enter an infected room. When these types of symptoms occur, you must be very careful. Skin rashes, itchiness and swelling are other common mould symptoms. People suffering from asthma may experience severe conditions in the presence of such mould. Other common mould health effects include weaker immune system, sickness, diarrhea and even death in some cases.

lack moulds are known to bring serious health problems in human beings. Though this type of fungus is essential for earth's ecosystem, it is not at all good for our health. You must stop this indoor toxin from growing, as it may result in serious health issues. Black mould gets nutrition from dead organic materials by decomposing them into simpler forms. spore formation. Moulds grow at an alarming rate and it becomes very difficult to control them. Such mould releases mycotoxins in the air, which can be inhaled by people through breathing. Direct contact with these types of mould is another mode of entry. There are numerous health problems which are associated with the exposure to black mould. Initial symptoms of this toxic fungus are allergic reactions to
There are many ways to get rid of black mould and some people use bleaches to kill this mould. However, bleach cannot reach every single corner of your room, where moulds nest. Moreover, bleaches clean the house for the time being but fail to prevent it from future contamination. Bleach is also not good for health, which further adds to health problems. Natural black mould killer is a better option, because they are free from side effects and also prevent future mould growth efficiently. For best results, you must do regular inspection for mould growth. Before such mould invades your entire house, you must prevent its growth. You must avoid moisture retention and try maintaining good ventilation throughout the house.

INGREDIENTS
For the Meatballs 1 pound ground turkey 1 link uncooked spicy Italian turkey sausage, about 1/4 to 1/3 pound 1/3 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat) 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese 1 egg 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper For the Sauce One 28-ounce can crushed or diced tomatoes One 14.5-ounce can crushed or diced tomatoes 2 large garlic cloves, smashed and peeled 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
22 The Grapevine
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil Big pinch crushed red pepper flakes Freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 rounded teaspoon sugar INSTRUCTIONS For the meatballs, start by splitting the sausage casing down the center using a sharp knife. Turn the sausage meat out of the casing and into a medium bowl. Add the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, parsley, basil, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Use your hands to mix the ingredients together until evenly combined, being sure the sausage meat is distributed throughout. Scoop up about 1 1/2 tablespoons of meat and roll it between your hands to form little globes that are the size of a
small golf ball. Continue until you've rolled all the meat into balls. You should have approximately 20 meatballs. Set aside while you make the sauce. For the sauce, pour the 2 cans of tomatoes into your slow cooker. Add the smashed garlic, parsley, basil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, salt, and sugar. Stir well. Add the meatballs to the sauce, one-by-one, gently nestling them into the tomatoes so they are almost entirely covered with sauce. Set the slow cooker to low and cook for 4 hours. Serve in shallow bowls with crusty bread for dipping. Yield: 6 servings Adapted from a recipe by Skinny Taste.

opened when they were over coming teething problems and really hopes anybody who may have had a lesser experience will come back and try them again. For my family we were having a great time the kids were amused, we were drinking bottles of beer at 1.20 a bottle, the only problem was deciding what to have off the menu. In the end we ordered the brie and a spinach and feta tartlet for starters. For our main courses I ordered fish and chips, my husband the homemade steak pie, the kids had meatballs with spaghetti and Salmon fishcakes with chips. The time between courses was spaced so you weren't waiting nor were you eating straight away. Dot was astute enough to ask if the kids wanted their main courses out straight away. On this occasion they were amused so we let them try our starters and then we ate our mains all together.

the room nicely. On a full sun winter lunchtime the outside terrace area would probably have been great to sit out and look out over the view of Archez but I was just as happy seeing it from the warm conservatory!
We went for lunch and all of us wanted some really good pub type food, my husband was especially looking forward to a home cooked pie as that isn't something I have time to do in our household! Well we were certainly not disappointed as all the food is home cooked. Dot prides herself on making the pastry from scratch and all the desserts, curries and pies.
Dot and her husband Mike welcomed us warmly and explained the specials they had on for the day. They showed the kids where there were some games to play and they settled into playing snakes and ladders together, whilst we had a chat with mike over how things were going. He was particularly encouraged by how many Spanish now came to try Dots curries and other traditional dishes. They are also supported well by their friends in Archez as they have now lived there for over 10 years and have make some good friends along the way. The food really was home cooked. The pie was exactly what my husband wanted, the fish and chips had a really light and crispy batter that I loved, and I also tried the fish cakes which were great too. My son wouldn't let anyone at his meatballs which he ate without talking until it was finished. It really was a nice meal in a warm environment at exceptional value. My daughter wouldn't let us leave without having a dessert despite the fact we were really stuffed. However, when Dot reeled off the list off amazing puddings and deserts we ordered two with four spoons, as it would have been rude not to! Despite feeling full we managed the toffee sticky pudding and chocolate sponge cake with hot chocolate sauce. We couldn't agree which was best as they were both fab! We had a lovely afternoon at Bar Amalia, I really like Dot and Mike and after eating there I'm only sorry we didn't go earlier!

A QUICK GUIDE TO TAXATION IN SPAIN Always seek professional advice
T
he tax system in Spain operates on the same basis as the tax system in the UK. In the UK, those who are resident for tax purposes are taxed on their worldwide income, regardless of the country in which it arises. Those who are not resident for tax purposes are taxed only on the income arising in the UK. A Double Taxation Convention between Spain and the UK operates to prevent income being taxed in both countries when a resident of one country has income arising from a source in the other country. In the case of pensions for past Government service, double taxation is avoided by allocating an exclusive right to tax to the paying state. This means that in all cases where a UK Government Service pension is paid to a Spanish resident it will be taxable only in the UK, apart from where, exceptionally, it is paid to a Spanish national. HMRC maintain a list of the UK pensions that are
28 The Grapevine
classified as government pensions for the purposes of the Double Taxation Convention. In a change from previous practice, all income received by a resident in Spain is now taken into account to calculate the applicable rate of income tax in Spain – regardless of whether the income itself is taxed in Spain. So an exempt UK Government pension will be taken into account for the purposes of determining the tax rate which applies to other income which is taxable in Spain. This is common practice in other states around the world. If, as a resident of Spain, you have concerns over whether a UK Government service pension is going to be taxed in Spain in a manner not in accordance with the Double Taxation Convention, you should address these to the Spanish tax authorities. In accordance with Spanish and international law, all residents in
Spain (nationals and nonnationals alike) are required to declare assets or groups of assets held outside Spain. Assets may include bank accounts, securities, rights, insurance, annuities, property, etc and the declaration is a separate exercise to the annual tax return. To reinforce this obligation, and as part of the Spanish Government’s anti-fraud law, the Government requires all residents in Spain to file an annual informative declaration of assets held overseas by 31 March each year. Severe penalties for incorrect, incomplete or late reporting can be incurred and the legislation also means that criminal charges can be brought in the case of noncompliance. Taxation is a complex issue and it is strongly recommended that professional advice is sought. Source www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-

With foreign buyers currently making up 95% of Spanish property purchases, it has never been more essential to advertise your home for sale globally. work in Spain. Basically it's like you are your own employer, or self-employed. Many jobs like to hire people who will work under this basis. In order to set this type of work up, you will have to get the services of an accountant. They will take care of registering you at the tax office, stating that you are self employed, and in being so you will hand in quarterly and annual accounts. Try and make sure that the person you pick speaks good English, because you will be relying on them to do your tax returns. If you are self-employed in Spain, each month you will have to deposit money into your social security. The minimum at present you can put into that account is 235 Euros each month. With doing this it will open up the "national health" system to you and also make sure you have a pension when you retire.
A QUICK GUIDE TO WORKING IN SPAIN A Basic Guide
S
o you have a dream of moving to Spain and working over here? It seems like a lot of people are doing this. Moving from Europe or other countries and going to Spain to start a new life. You already know that if you live in Europe you have little problems travelling back and forth to Spain. In fact to see how many different nationalities are over here working, just stop and look around for a bit. When you get to Spain, if you are a European citizen you do need to get a NIE number in order to work. This is what will put you into the Spanish tax system. But it seems that you need to either purchase property or a car in order to get a NIE number in Spain. It used to be that when you would get into
34 The Grapevine
Spain, you could simply go to the local police with your passport and fill out some forms quickly, and you would be applying for your NIE number. But now you will need to have a reason for why you are seeking a NIE number. What's really cool is that most employers will arrange for you to get your NIE number if you get hired. One thing you will find out about getting a position in Spain is that it will be very hard for you to get a full time job. Employers don't really like to do this in Spain, because it gives the employees too many rights. An employee can take time off work for a month or two because of a doctor's visit, and the employer is unable to replace the person. Or you could look for "autonomo"
If you want to you can pay more into social security, which will give you higher benefits and pensions. When taking a job that is selfemployed in Spain, make sure that you take into account any other fees you may require such as social security and accountant fees. You will also need to make an invoice for what you earn each month. You can either have your accountant do this or do it yourself. Just make sure you keep the records properly. If you are working autonomo, on the invoice you will also need to include Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Fisicas (IRPF) You as an autonomo will also pay your taxes (VAT) every quarter, and at the end of the year it will be audited to make sure you paid the right amount. It's very difficult to understand all the laws perfectly for this type of work, that's why it is important that you hire an accountant to help out.

FIVE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS For Dramatic Effects on your Health, Happiness and Professional Success
W
e all likely have many more than five goals we’d like to accomplish this year, but in keeping with the lean mentality, keep things simple and give youself just five, which, if done mindfully can have dramatic ripple effects on your health, happiness and professional success—and perhaps all the other goals you’ve set for yourself. 1: Smile more. It is well known among social psychologists now that the simple act of smiling can make you happier and healthier, even if your smile is a forced one—so practice more in 2015! This effect apparently happens for two main reasons. According to the facial feedback hypothesis, smiling activates the release of dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, neurotransmitters that help reduce stress and elicit positive emotions. In other words, while your brain usually controls
36 The Grapevine
your muscles, your muscles (i.e., smiling!) can actually influence your brain. In essence, the brain senses the flexion of our facial muscles and, concluding that we must be happy about something, starts to make us feel happier. Smiling works for another more obvious reason—it is contagious, literally. According to a Swedish study, when people are exposed to emotional facial expressions, they tend to unconsciously mimic those expressions, positive or negative, which as just discussed may influence their emotions. The key takeaway: when you smile, you may appear more inviting, attractive, relaxed and sincere to others. And when you don’t smile, the impression you give may be the opposite. (For other great tips on how changing your body language can have a profound impact on your life, check out Amy Cuddy’s TED Talk.) 2: Maintain a health and fitness regimen.
The health impacts of regular physical exercise are widely known (and very important to your success as a leader). But, in addition to reducing stress, fighting disease and improving mood, energy and sleep, getting regular exercise and eating healthier can also make you appear to be a better leader. In fact, according to Harvard Business Review, healthy-looking individuals are perceived as better leaders than even intelligentlooking people. 3: Schedule personal time. That’s right, schedule your personal time. Many of us are used to scheduling, but for some reason only seem to do so in the context of work (e.g., meetings, project deadlines, etc.). However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the most productive people are not actually the busiest but rather those who prioritize their free time—for personal passions, for family, for activities completely unrelated to their jobs.
To advertise call 637 028 873
As reported by Fast Company, social networking company Draugiem Group recently used the productivity app DeskTime to determine which habits distinguished their most productive employees from everyone else. They discovered that the top 10% of their most productive employees not only didn’t put in longer hours than anyone else but also didn’t even work full eight-hour days. Instead, they took 17-minute breaks for every 52 minutes worked, spending those breaks completely away from their work and email. What the Draugiem Group results show is something that researchers have increasingly been concluding: that the best way to improve performance and focus is to reserve time to refresh yourself. In the New Year, schedule time for family, friends and passions. Your work will improve, your relationships will improve, and you never know
what meaningless knowledge you’ll accumulate in the process—of scuba, Star Trek, baking, or any other hobby—that will help you form great new relationships. 4. Don’t commit to things you can’t do. There’s quite a bit of literature out there about the fake-it-until-youmake-it mentality—that is, committing to things outside your comfort zone in an effort to grow and improve. But in this case, I’m referring more to those activities you just know you can’t do. Can’t make it to dinner with your friend next week but prefer to say ‘maybe’ so you can delay the disappointment? Just say you can’t. Not overextending yourself will save you time and consternation down the road, and when you do commit, you’ll actually follow through—and become known as a person whose word means something.
5. Use your calendar. One of the best ways to stay on top of your goals is to schedule—relentlessly. Managing your to-do list in an online calendar will help you miss fewer deadlines, keep you organized, and ensure that you are prioritizing your most important tasks. Key non-work items to schedule include seeing family and friends, reading the news and books, engaging in personal hobbies and checking personal finances. These five resolutions are about creating overall alignment—between your goals and reality, and between your identity and others’ perceptions of you.

WHY LIVE IN SPAIN A reminder for some and reasons for others!
1 The lifestyle Spain’s gracious lifestyle is a huge attraction. In Spain, life is savored, with time taken to enjoy life’s pleasures. People stroll the streets in the evenings, enjoying the long evenings and chatting with neighbors. Charming outdoor cafés, where you can while away the hours, are everywhere. Families are close, and many still eat most meals together. And that long mid-day siesta—which some other countries see as inefficient—provides the ideal time to connect with friends and family and to savor good food. 2: The weather Those long evening strolls and the many outdoor cafés? You can thank Spain’s warm weather for making them possible. Sunny weather is the norm in much of the country. Temperatures may soar in the south in summertime, but sea breezes cool you off. And winters in the south? Shirt-sleeve weather. In much of the north, where Spain does have four proper seasons, winters are still pretty mild: The temperature

range year-round can be from about 40 F up to about 75 F. Not bad at all. 3. Health Benefits Recommended by the World Health Organisation as “near perfect environment as it is possible to obtain”. Near miraculous cures have been recorded in this area and especially beneficial to people who suffer from Asthma, Rheumatism, Arthritis or heart related problems. Spain offers truly exceptional, quick medical treatment and many new hospitals, recognised as far superior to the U.K. 4: The diversity Any way you look at it, Spain is amazingly diverse. Beaches; mountains; vast plains; yearround mild weather or four distinct seasons: Spain has it all. Pick whatever climate you like, and unless your favorite is yearround snow, you’ll likely find it in Spain.
hospitability and are to glad share their relaxed lifestyle with their European friends. One of the main reasons Spain is so popular is the Spanish nation are so helpful and accommodating to its visitors, perhaps that’s why 1 in 4 people from the U.K. holiday in Spain every year and just keep going back, they cannot all be wrong, can they? 5: The cost of living And finally, let’s get practical: This great lifestyle is very affordable. Spain is one of the least-expensive countries in Western Europe. And that’s particularly true today, in Spain’s recession-battered economy. In many Spanish cities, you can find nice, furnished apartment rentals for as little as €400 a month. In smaller towns you can pay even less. In many areas you’ll have little or no heating costs, thanks to the warm climate. And excellent public transportation means you don’t need a car. Get excellent private health care

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es
The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

2016 The Propert y Feature According to new figures released by the Spanish land registry, Britons, more than any other nationality, are taking advantage of the favourable economic factors. The euro has fallen from about 80p to the pound, to a little over 70p T in 12 months, making homes in popular areas such as the Costa del Sol cheaper to buy. Slow price growth in Spain, coupled with rapidly rising property prices in the UK – by more than 10 per cent in some cases – mean that Spanish property is making less of a dent in a Britons’ bank account. Combined with this, active investors see Spain as the top investment target in Europe. A recent European poll showed 27% of over 150 investors identified Spain as their preferred investment target for next year, clearly indicating the strength of its recent recovery.

and as attractive as possible. Flowers are good, flowers sell properties! Turn on bedside lamps and mood lighting. Put cushions on the beds. And does your house smell pleasant. Make sure it does! Even a little quiet background music is good too.
UNSPOLIT ANDALUSIA Prepare your house for a prospective buyer
T
he competitive climate and nature of the property market in Southern Spain at the moment means that when you put your property onto the market, you are up against a huge number of other, often very similar, and equally attractive houses for sale. Standing out is very important. So here are a few tips, gained from my experience over many years working in this market along with a sprinkling of enthusiasm and common sense, to get your house sold! Price This is, at the moment, the most important thing to get right in order to sell successfully. Everyone wants to think they have a bargain! Work out what you can afford to take and just add on the selling costs and maybe a little margin for negotiation.
60 The Grapevine
Paperwork Key to success these days is ensuring that today's often nervous buyers are reassured that your paperwork is all up to date. If you are unsure, take action early and talk to your local agent, notary or lawyer. Make sure your house is registered on the Property Registry, that the plot boundaries on the Catastro registry are correct and that any extra buildings you have added, such as a garage or pool are also registered. And there's more, so seek advice. Presentation Make the property presentable, so if a new lick of paint, or an unsightly repair is required, or loose tiles need replacing, now is the time to do it. If you have a pool it really helps to have it clean and beautiful even in if its winter, as it helps the potential buyers see how nice it will look in the warmer months. When you have a viewing, make sure your house and gardens are as tidy
Preparation Ask your agent about the client who will be viewing. Is it a retiring couple looking at a permanent move here, or a holiday villa, what do they most want in a property and what budget do they have and so on. Then you can be armed with the most suitable comments, relevant to them, should they ask you any questions. So if nearby amenities are important to them, point out the local shops and restaurants. If they want a community around them, mention the lovely neighbours and local clubs and activities and so on. During the viewing, stay in the background! If you are there when a viewer visits, remember that the agents should know how best to show the viewer around your house. Don't try to take over, let us do our job! But be there; ready to answer any questions in a friendly manner. Remember on a first visit they are not interested in a huge amount of details, they just want to get a first impression. More details can be given on a second visit. For further advice or to pass your house to me to help you sell it, please feel free to contact me. few months ago we provided some information on a new law introduced by the Junta de Andalucía which requires sellers of property situated on rustic land to obtain a certificate from their local Town Hall known as a Declaración de Asimilado a Fuera de Ordenación (DAFO). The DAFO certificate clarifies the situation of the property and confirms that there are no problems relating to the house or the land. All sales of houses on rustic land and updates of Escritura descriptions need this certificate and for sales it is needed prior to completion. The process involves an architect producing comprehensive plans of the property, confirming that the

The Town Hall check their records to ensure that proper planning permission has been granted for everything in situ and there are no sanctions against the property or files open investigating issues relating to the property. The Town Hall Architect then visits the property to ensure that all of these requirements have been met before issuing the certificate. Following the issuing of a number of these certificates by Town Halls for sales over the past months, we now have more experience of what is involved. For instance if a first occupation

In these cases the DAFO cannot be issued unless the property was completed more than four years prior to the date the land was declared as protected. So if the property was built prior to the land being designated as protected then the DAFO can still be applied for. However this does not apply to houses built on land forever protected such as the national park. Before applying for the DAFO, property owners must be 100% certain that everything that has been built on their land has been in situ for more than six years – this even includes pergolas. The Town Hall will check on the overhead plans produced by the Junta de Andalucia to make sure this is the case and if something has not been in place for the requisite six years then the Town Hall may require it to be removed. This does vary from Town Hall to Town Hall so each property owner needs to check with their particular Town Hall. Its food markets like Borough remain memorable experiences, and even smaller spots like Neal's Yard remain lively and irresistible. Add the extraordinary culinary diversity of its multi-ethnic restaurants and you have one of the world's dining capitals.
BEST FOOD CITIES AROUND THE WORLD Eating is a reason to travel! 1. NEW YORK New York is a city of superlatives and that obviously also applies to its food scene. It has over 10,000 restaurants where you find every kind of cuisine imaginable and for every budget. It's the world's true food mecca allowing you to go on a gastronomic trip around the world without leaving the city. 2 .TOKYO The Tsukiji Fish Market alone would be enough to make Tokyo a food destination. That's where 5 million pounds of fish is sold every day, mostly to be served as sushi. But this is also the city with the most Michelin stars in the world and with some of the best casual dining. 3. LYON It can be said that Lyon is where France originally elevated food into an art form and chef Paul Bocuse was the pioneer. The city still caters to gourmands of all budgets, although it's the haute cuisine that clearly stand out. It focuses on local traditions and produce, and the "bouchons" (the more traditional restaurants) are among the best spots to enjoy the more rustic cuisine washed down by the best French wines. 4 BARCELONA Barcelona became the worldclass city it is in large part due to its innovative contemporary Catalan cuisine. It offers a wealth of fine restaurants where food is science and chefs like Ferran Adrià are also artists and
68 The Grapevine
scientists, while for the more conservative there are superb classic establishments serving the more traditional dishes. On top of that there's one of the world's best food markets, the Boqueria, not to mention the impressive Mercat de Santa Caterina. 5. SAN SEBASTIAN There is an extraordinary culinary movement in San Sebastian that goes beyond its impressive trio of 3-Michelin-star restaurants. This is a city that takes food very seriously and a place where a meal can be turned into an event. The best experience is visiting the La Brecha market in the morning and ending the day at any restaurant serving Basque-style tapas accompanied by local wines. 6. PARIS Paris stands out for the fine dining restaurants but there's nothing better than the Parisian patisserie. After enjoying the creativity of some of the world's greatest chefs (Alain Ducasse, Joël Robuchon, Alain Passard), the real Paris food experience is giving in to temptation and having the mouthwatering pastries. And forget its dining scene's reputation as selfcentered and pretentious -- Paris has embraced global cuisine in a big way.
8. COPENHAGEN You could argue that the Danish capital became a food capital thanks to just one restaurant -Noma, often praised as the world's best. But that assessment would not be fair. Noma exists because Copenhagen is a city that has refined its taste buds and offers an impressive range of restaurants catering to every taste. It's also the center of the Nordic food resurgence and there's a thriving café culture. 9. BANGKOK Flavors and aromas are an integral part of Bangkok life and even the most picky foreigner ends up surrendering to the tempting street food. That's Thai food at its best and most authentic, and you haven't eaten until you've eaten on a Bangkok street. Spicy, sweet, salty, or sour, you can taste it all in one single meal, and with immigration adding other flavours of the world, the city has become the most relaxed and one of the best dining destinations in the world.
10. SAO PAULO The world's largest Latin metropolis is a seriously hot food city. It's long been a center of outstanding cuisine(s) but its reputation is growing and gone international. It was the mass immigration of the late-1800s that provided all the ingredients for the fusion of flavours (Italian, Japanese, Lebanese...) that created the diverse, high-quality cuisine in the city today.
7. LONDON London currently has a thriving restaurant culture and that's not just because of celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver.

NEW TECHNOLOGY GADGETS Something to look forward to in 2016!
T
here are a number of new technology gadgets due out and they are at the very cutting edge of technology. Keep in mind that some of these will cost thousands of dollars, which may not make them ideal for all gadget enthusiasts! Soundwall People who believe that art is visual should think again; the Soundwall will turn that belief on its head. The audio canvases use state-of-the-art technology which creates an immersive art experience combining a traditional image on canvas or paper and specially selected sounds, chosen by the artist. The new limited edition comes with a Bruce Springsteen print, which features an audio interview and a playlist especially curated by the jaggedvoiced wonder himself. Priced at around $3,500, it’s highly recommended if you are a Bruce Springsteen fan. Devialet Phantom Wireless Sound System Devialet over the years have proven to have a knack for turning ordinary pieces of technology into beautiful high-tech equipment. The Phantom is a stunning piece

of technology which brings together the looks of a Death Star and high-end sound tech, like omnidirectional wireless speakers. The system cost close to $1400 and the app is a little buggy, but it will certainly make a great addition to any living room. Stunning Gadgets Solar Battery Charger Not your ordinary solar battery charger,. Stunning Gadgets sells new technology which is designed to be rugged, which is why they have no problem backing their products up with a lifetime guarantee. The Solar Battery Charger sports a built-in 5000mAh Battey, two charging ports and highly efficient solar cells. The tough design makes it an excellent companion for hiking and camping trips, and it can prove to be invaluable when the national grid goes down. A musthave in today’s gadget-centric universe. Lantronix Zano Quadcopter While small ‘copters and quadcopters are nothing new, what really makes the Lantronix Zano stand out is its tiny size and the fact that it can be controlled by an app. The quadcopter uses sensors which allow it to hover
SG iOS Bluetooth Keyboard Yes, Bluetooth keyboards are at present flooding the market, but most of them are still not perfected for use with your iOS device. Many are designed for multiple operating systems and so they fail to shine when it comes to making it easier to type or access specific files. However, Stunning Gadget’s bluetooth keyboard has been designed and built with the iOS in mind. Though it can be hooked up to other Bluetoothenabled devices, its short cut keys are best with Apple systems, and it’s very easy to type lengthy pieces of text on your tablet. Misfit Swarovski Shine Fitness trackers are not new, but Swaroviski’s Shine certainly adds lots of bling to a functional and mundane item. Large crystals are said to store solar energy, enabling them to power the tracker without a battery. Though we didn’t spend enough time with the gadget, it’s safe to say that its beautiful design and functionality certainly give it a chance in a saturated niche. Hearnotes A unique set of earbuds that do not need a Bluetooth connection, just a dongle and the proprietary Kleer technology. They are designed to provide wireless listening, and in our brief testing the sound seems to be clearer than many Bluetooth headsets. Fuel3D Scanify 3D scanners once weighed a ton and you needed a very deep pocket to get one. However, the Fuel3D Scanify we saw at CES promises to change all that. A handheld device, it is designed to scan an object in a few seconds and it costs just $1490. Go have some fun!

AMAZING ZARAGOZA Fancy a visit?
Z
aragoza or Saragossa is Aragon’s capital that lies 250 kilometers away form Madrid and Barcelona; the former at its south west and the latter at Spain’s southeast coast. Overview Zaragoza has everything modern with a high population; its appeal is its natural environment which tourism did not mangle. Many tend to bypass this quaint site thinking that it is just another side stop when traveling by train to and from Barcelona and Madrid, but the more adventurous who make this side stop are always pleasantly surprised with their find. There are so many eateries which offer authentic Spanish cuisine for those on the look out for great gastronomical offerings. They will not be disappointed with the Aragon cooking here. Historical attractions Besides food, the old town offers impressive historical architectural sites such as the castle of

You will be delighted with the manors and palaces around the city. Museums are an important part of Zaragoza with the Fine Arts Museum taking top place. It houses beautiful paintings from Aragonese artists such as El Greco, Goya and Ribera. Then the Museum of Camon Aznar boasts of paintings from renowned artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Renoir, Goya, Sorolla and Manet, making this place a haven for art lovers. for 6 months from June 14th to September 14th but only every 5 years. Each expo held has a different theme on a general issue. There are usually many magnificent pavilionsBusiness Management Articles, interesting shows and numerous attractions that you can spend weeks there; no wonder the expo stays for 6 months. It is a definite stop for any visitor to Zaragoza for the expo that is of such high standards. Even the locals and all of Spain would try to make it whenever the expo is on. It was in 1851 when the very first international expo was held in London. It was such a success that similar expos followed and were held in different parts of the world which saw the birth of Eiffel Tower in 1889. These expos drew in the crowds in huge numbers which saw the formation of the BIE or Bureau of International Expositions in 1928 to oversee the planning of such expos.

Got sacked from my job as the restaurant manager today after an employee lost three fingers in one of the electric food mixers. Apparently I'd failed to do an adequate whisk assessment.
Once, in a Moscow hotel, I was stung by what I thought at the time was a dodgy looking wasp...
A man on his deathbed requested his wife, 3 sons, his nurse and a camera to be set up to record his final moments. Which were as follows... "To my son, David, I leave the 2 blocks of flats in the East End of London. To my other son, Michael, I leave the 4 penthouses in Chelsea, and finally to my eldest son, Kevin, I leave the big glass building near Tower Bridge." With that he slipped away. The nurse turned to the wife and said, "I never realised your husband was so wealthy. You and your sons are very lucky."

Be careful about drink driving as we are still getting over the Christmas period, some of us have been lucky not to have had brushes with the police on our way home from the various social activities over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many pints and then topped it off with a couple of jaegerbombs. Not a good idea.Knowing full well I was over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before – I took a taxi home.
I asked my grandmother for "something Cuban" for my birthday, and she got me a Che Guevara shirt. Clothes, but no cigar.
My girlfriend just dumped me for talking too much about video games. What a ridiculous thing to Fallout 4.
I'm convinced that every time a sock goes missing from the dryer... It comes back as an extra Tupperware lid...
Sure enough, I passed a police roadblock, but because it was a taxi, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise. I have never driven a taxi before and I am not sure where I got it from? — Happy New Year!

RULES FOR GOOD HEALTH Tips worth remembering
1
. You might heard of this nursery rhyme – 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise'. You should maintain a healthy routine after waking up early so as to perform the right time and ensure good health. 2. You should try to avoid anxiety and stressful conditions. Stress and anxiety is linked to many other health risks. So keep them away from you. 3. Don't suppress the natural urge to pass stool and urine. They help remove unwanted toxins out of the body.
4. Use antiseptic soap or liquid gel to wash your hands before eating. 5. Regular cleaning of the tongue to remove extra coatings is necessary for oral hygiene. 6. Brush your teeth after every meal, at least two times – in morning and at night before going to bed. Toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles is best. Brush the teeth for at least two minutes. 7. To remove food particles use a proper up and down motion with the brush and then rinse your mouth thoroughly. If brushing is

9. Floss regularly between the teeth and use a fluoride toothpaste or baking soda. 10. Replace your toothbrush every three months. 11. Do not use your nails, toothpicks or other pointed things to clean the teeth because it can wear away the gums resulting in complete exposure of teeth. 12. Take a well balanced nutritious diet containing all minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water in the requisite proportions.

F
or the start of 2016, I´d like to introduce you to the plectranthus family. They´re little known, although there are over 350 species worldwide, and they´re incredibly useful plants. So let´s get to know them a little. They take their name from plectron meaning spur and anthos meaning flower; they are closely related to members of the mint family, characterised by their square stems, lipped flowers and aromatic leaves. Many of the family are commonly used as culinary or medicinal herbs – sage,

oregano and basil all belong and some, such as plectranthus edulis, commonly known as the Ethiopian potato, produce edible tubers. Plectranthus are all tender (though generally hardy enough for our Mediterranean climate) originating from warm areas of Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Silver-leafed varieties are for hot sunny positions whilst the greener and lusher looking ones are happier with more shade. Some even have fleshy succulent-type leaves; many are very aromatic. Some you will know and
recognise; coleus with those fiery coloured leaves are now reclassified as plectranthus and plectranthus coleoides, or Swedish ivy, is one of our most popular hanging basket plants. We have five species in stock at the moment; all make fine and easy-going garden plants – no green fingers needed. Plectranthus argentatus, silver plectranthus: this stunning beauty is an Australian native and has soft, silvery-white, sumptuous leaves which make for stunning combinations with bright geraniums, purple heliotropes, black ophiopogon

flowers and said to be even more objectionable to cats! Both species will tolerate very poor garden conditions and are ideal groundcover on dry difficult sites such as banks.

grass, burgundy New Zealand flax – the list is endless! The leaves seem to be coated with soft silver velvet, making a magnificent mound; the flower spikes are pale pink/lilac and, for me, are somewhat insignificant compared to the glory of the leaves, but they are very much liked by bees and butterflies. Young plants show their true platinum winning beauty best; they become rather woody with poorer leaves as they grow old, so best to replace them regularly. Plectranthus ecklonii Mona Lavender, lavender spur flower: As daytime hours start to shorten, Mona Lavender comes into her best and will often flower right through autumn, winter and spring as long as conditions aren't too hard. This perennial low shrub is one for partial shade where her mounding growth of deeply green leaves, with intense violet undersides and stems impart a rich dignity. The showy lavender flowers with purple striations are prolifically produced. In the ground the plants will reach approx. 0.75 high x 1m spread in a good humus-rich soil. Water regularly to keep it fresh-looking and turgid and fertilise when not in flower. It´s also a lovely pot

plant for a terrace, its colour intensifying when in good bright light. In the ground it will take some sun, though it will probably stay lower growing, especially in strong sunshine. Pinch the tips to encourage bushiness and a wellrounded shape. Mona Lavender was many years in development and is a real South African winner.
Plectranthus tomentosa, Vick's Vapor Rub plant: And, yes, it really does smell just like Vick's with the advantage of being petroleum free! Another South African, the leaves on this one are rounded and fuzzy, blue flower spikes and a menthol aroma that is both relaxing and will keep your nose clear! Birds, bees and butterflies seem to love it but mosquitos do not. Try it in pots around the house. One of the best aspects with all the plectranthus is that they are so easy to grow and range from good-looking to absolutely stunning. Combine this with their useful qualities and you just have to have some in your garden!
Plectranthus caninus, (syn. p. neochilis) scaredy-dog plant: A little fleshy-leaved plant, again, from South Africa with rounded and slightly scalloped aromatic leaves, said to smell somewhere between marijuana leaves, fox and skunk! It is noticeable when crushed, though not particularly objectionable, but many animals, insects and reptiles do not like it at all. It is said that it deters not only dogs but deer, snails, snakes, ants and flies too – so a useful planting. The plant is pretty with soft grey-green leaves and lilac-blue flower spikes and forms useful ground cover. It will grow in full sun to part shade, reaching 0.30m high x 1m spread. Prune back hard after flowering to avoid legginess.

PINE PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLARS With a mild winter anticipated, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) reminds pet owners that the pine processionary caterpillars will probably return early this year. These creatures exit from their nests in pine trees every spring and travel, head to tail, in long lines (hence the name) to underground burrows from which they later emerge as harmless moths. Unfortunately, while in the caterpillar stage, they have a unique defence mechanism in the form of long white hairs on their body which contain a toxin. If these are eaten by dog or cat, they can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death from anaphylactic shock. If your pet ingests one of these caterpillars they will exhibit signs of excessive drooling or frothing at
the mouth, possible difficulty in breathing and/or spots on the tongue. If you think your pet is suffering from these symptoms flush your animal's mouth with as much water as possible and take it immediately to the nearest vet for emergency treatment.
POISON WARNING The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has received several recent disturbing reports of pets being poisoned in various parts of Nerja including the Torrecilla Beach area and the campo around Fuente Del Baden and Los Olivos. There has even been evidence found of sausages left on the ground laced with what is most likely to be rat poison. If you see someone leaving poison or anything suspicious in a common area please report it to the Guardia Civil on 95 252 0091 and ask for their environmental division, Seprona. Unfortunately, until this person is caught, all pet owners should be ultra vigilant when their animals are outside with all dogs kept on a leash whenever they are not enclosed within their own garden or property. Try to keep cats indoors but if this is not possible, do your best to keep an eye on them while they are outside.
