Editors Note..... I know it is very English talking about the weather all the time but it has to be said that it seems summer is finally here. Having said that I may have written that exact sentence a couple of months back too! Many of you have asked how we are getting on with the new addition to the family, Pipin our dog. Well he has been no trouble at all and has fitted right in with us. The novelty still hasn’t warned off with our daughter and I am not sure it will, she is besotted. I am not sure I relayed the story of how we came to adopt him. Well, after looking on the CAS website we rang up asking after Pipin and found he was living in Riogordo.

We then went over there as a family to visit Pipin and get to know him. As it turned out he had been fostered by the Glenn Stuart local author and ex writer for the Grapevine and his family. We spent some time with Pipin in Riogordo and then decided he was right for us so we took him home then and then. A trip to the pet shop followed by a trip to the vets for a check up meant Pipin became part of the family with everything he needed... aah! So it was thanks to the work of these animal charities that ensured another dog was given a good home. Enjoy and keep Reading!

News in Spain VÉLEZ MÁLAGA TRAM COMPANY THREATENS TO END THE SERVICE NEXT MONTH The company which runs the local tram service in Vélez Málaga has said it will stop the service if, by Thursday July 7, it has not been paid the 2 million € it is owed by the Town Hall. El Mundo reports that Travelsa has also announced that it will present a layoff plan if the money is not urgently paid. La Opinión de Málaga meanwhile reports that the new Partido Popular Mayor of Vélez, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, has said he will demand that the Junta de Andalucía keep their promise for the loan which was agreed to pay off the Town Hall’s debt to Travelsa. The CCOO union has asked for an urgent meeting with the Junta’s public works department and the Town Hall to try and save a service which is used by more than 900,000 passengers a year. THREE GRAVES EXHUMED IN LA LÍNEA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN IN STOLEN BABIES INVESTIGATION The remains of three babies have been exhumed from the cemetery in La Línea de la Concepción, on a judicial order as part of an investigation into three suspected cases of ‘stolen babies’. The children’s mothers suspect that their babies were illegally given up for adoption to other families and did not, in fact, die shortly after birth as they were told. DNA testing will now take place on the bones found in the three graves. It’s understood that the court has ordered another two exhumations in Cádiz and a third in Málaga. Hundreds of cases of stolen babies are under investigation by state prosecutors in Spain, but La Línea is the only Spanish town so far where investigations have been referred on to a court, after prosecutors found evidence of a suspected crime. It was meanwhile confirmed that the

National Toxicology and Forensic Sciences Institute will carry out free DNA testing for those affected by the irregular adoptions. El País said the database will only collect samples which have been previously authorised by a prosecutor or a court and will run on a programme provided by the FBI. DNA samples collected from those affected at private centres will not form part of the database. A network of Justice Ministry offices has been set up across the country to office advice and counselling. PASSENGER VOLUME AT MÁLAGA AIRPORT EXPECTED TO REACH 13 MILLION THIS YEAR Passenger volume at Málaga Airport is expected to reach 13 million this year, one million more than in 2010. The news came from the Socialist MP Miguel Ángel Heredia after a meeting on Tuesday with the airport’s new director, Salvador Merino. It’s understood that the outlook for the summer is a 10% increase in the number of passengers who use the airport. Heredia added that more passengers mean more employment and more income for Málaga province, and added that the new terminal, T3 which opened in March last year, represented a 40% increase in the number of staff employed at Málaga by AENA Spanish Airports alone. Added to that, he said, are the employees of all the other companies who operate at the terminal, on which more than 5,000 jobs currently depend. Passenger volume is up by 41% on the local train service to the airport and Heredia has indicated that from this September train frequency will be increased from one train every 20 minutes. The current service is one every half an hour.

Weird and Wonderful from around the world!
kraine protest over NZ 'win a wife' competition prize
Ukrainian women's rights activists have held a protest over a New Zealand radio station's competition for listeners to "win" a Ukrainian wife. Nine women protested topless outside Kiev's marriage registration office, holding banners with slogans such as "Ukraine is not a brothel. The Rock FM announced the prize winner on Monday as a winemaker named Greg. The competition has caused controversy in New Zealand too, but the station said it was just "a bit of a laugh"."At the end of the day, it's up to both people if they decide to get married and return to New Zealand. We're not actually marrying anyone or bringing women back to New Zealand," Rock FM programme director, Brad King, was quoted as saying when the competition was first announced. But the information about the competition on the website suggests the radio station had anticipated a reaction. "It's actually going to happen. And oh boy are there going to be some people with their panties in a twist over this one," the website entry reads. The competition winner is due to fly into the coal mining town of Donetsk on 23 March, before travelling to Zaporizhia, as part of a 12-night holiday in Ukraine. As part of the prize terms and conditions, the winner chooses a woman from the Endless Love dating agency in advance. The agency then arranges the holiday to Ukraine and brings the two together. The prize also includes such things as the use of a translator and a river cruise Kenya MP Gidion Mbuvi to fight for right to wear bling! A Kenyan lawmaker thrown out of parliament for wearing ear studs and sunglasses says he will fight to change the dress regulations."I represent the youths who elected me to parliament," Gidion Mbuvi, 35, told the BBC. "This is our generation.
12
The Grapevine
It is our time," said the MP who drives a Hummer car, like many US rap stars. He says MPs should be allowed to wear "extras" such as sunglasses and earrings, as long as they wear suits. He said that Kenya had been governed by old men for too long. "I'm trying to prove to the world that it is the right time for the youth to be in charge of our nation," he said.He was thrown out of parliament after other MPs decided that the way he dressed offended the dignity of the assembly. Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim said the house had never before been entered by a male lawmaker wearing earrings. But one Kenyan reminded people on the internet that the speaker wears a white wig made of horsehair - and questioned who looked more ridiculous! The world's most expensive painting ever sold at auction is going on show in the UK. The work, called Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, was painted in 1932 by Pablo Picasso and is based on his muse, Marie-Therese Walter. The painting, which was sold in New York last year for $106.5m (£65.5m), will go on display at the Tate Modern in London. Tate director Nicholas Serota: "This is an outstanding painting by Picasso. "I am delighted that through the generosity of the lender we are able to bring it to the British public for the first time."

eing a bit of a stress-head my life has to be based around lists. I often wake up concerned that I have a million and one things to do, so getting everything down on paper can be therapeutic as more often than not once I have my “to do” list in front of me I realise that things are not as bad as I thought. Once complete I can begin prioritising what needs to be done. The problem with this system is that if my list has too many difficult things to do the “quick wins” become the priority. So by 10.30 I can proudly show my wife I have crossed off 4 things off of my list. Of course on closer inspection she would see that I have crossed off “write to do list”, “sort sock drawer”, “take rubbish” and “send email to sister”. The things that remain are “go to town hall and discuss problem with water bill”, “scrape flaky paint off wall and paint it”, “contact pet shop to see if they have an Alsatian / Chihuahua cross that answers to the name of Snooky”, “call friends to tell them you have lost their dog that you were looking after whilst they were away” etc.
Listmania by Andy Wilkes
So many times I have found a pad with a “to do” list from a few years before. Not only as you would expect are all things crossed off, but the list is almost identical to a current list. That tells me three things; I could be living in the film Groundhog Day, I need to stop stressing over things that will get done eventually, and lastly I must stop agreeing to look after the pets of vacationing friends. Some of my regular readers (can I just take this opportunity to say hi to all the inmates in the Psychiatric ward at Carlos Haya) may notice that I do indeed have a bit of an obsession with lists such as my 50 things to do before I am 50 and things to see in Spain. This is nothing new; on my second date with the current Mrs Wilkes she asked me who my 10 favourite women were ( I had already wowed her with my top ten favourite cars and my top 10 Smiths songs). Without thinking I launched into my list “Demi Moore, Sharleen Spiteri from the band Texas….” then I

caught myself and said “do you mean women in general like my mum or women that I fancy?” The comment did not go down too well but I think I got away with. On the whole it appears to be men that have an obsession with lists. Come on chaps; surely I am not the only one with a top ten favourite editions of the Grapevine. No? Well maybe it is just me then. On that note I just Googled ‘obsession with writing lists’ to see if it has a name. On Yahoo Answers somebody has rather helpfully posted “I am not sure if it has a name, maybe you just really like to write lists” Thank you Mr Einstein – train spotting is a great example of this, basically just a list of all of the trains that person has seen. I wonder what these people do once they have completed their list. Maybe they go and spot something else like planes or visit all of the football league stadiums. God that last sentence was so depressing I found it hard to type. Do not get me wrong I love a bit of senseless collecting. When I was little my dad bought me loads of first day covers of stamps and I had loads including the first flight of Concorde and the Olympics in London in 1948. But what a waste of time; I tried to sell them in a stamp shop once and the look of disdain from the owner could not have been worse if I had try to sell him a piece of cardboard

with the word “stamp” written on it. He did not buy them and I think I left them in the left of a previous house (probably on purpose). Probably the highlight of my collecting career was completing the Panini Euro ’77 football sticker album. I dread to think how much money it cost me to complete it and every playtime was spent with a stack of stickers saying “got it, got it, got it, NEED it!” Once again using the power of the Internet I have just looked on eBay and found that the stickers from this collection are still being sold. £1.39 for Colin Bell of Man City! I had 15 of them. This just goes to prove I am right about never throwing anything away.
A good example of how lists affect all of our lives is any voting process we take part in. I for one have taken part in many ‘decision by committee’ exercises where there is a list of options and everybody has to vote for their top 3 choices. Invariably the winners of these polls are the things that people put as their second or third choice and nobody gets their first choice. Just think Nick Clegg! Similarly the obsession with top ten whatever’s has spawned many TV programmes listing the best ever dances, comedy shows, car crashes etc and magazines and radio stations ask their audience to vote for their favourite pop artist or band ever. Once again these are flawed as the voting is based on the readers or listeners demographic so the result of the Radio1 best pop band or artist ever will have JLS (I don’t know who they are either) at number 1, Kylie Minogue at number 2 followed by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Elvis, Queen and so on. OK, that little rant off of my chest it is back to my “to do” list. .......Write Grapevine article Sorted.
35th Anniversary of a Real Estate Agent
A current company cashing in on the obsessive collecting of boys / men is De Agostini which sells magazines with a part to build something week by week. The latest offering is model of a McLaren racing car and part 1 costs £1.99. However the other 83 issues over 21 months are £7.99 meaning the car will cost around £670 to build. Personally I would consider stealing the real car as if you got caught the fine would probably be less than that.

Jo Dennison
T
his month I chatted to Jo Dennison from the CompetaArt group. I had met with Jo Dennison a few years ago when her husband Peter died. He was also an artist and she was exhibiting his work to raise money for UNICEF and so used The Grapevine Magazine to publicise the event. Jo later moved from the campo to the village of Competa and then was introduced to the CompetaArt group by Sandra Costello. So Jo and I meet again in her large workshop in Competa where she also displays her work. Inside the workshop I get a real feel for Jo's work. I can see her work space area and all her textiles, different colours of cottons, fabrics and her original drawings. The walls of her workshop are covered with her work and you can really see how she has developed over the years from small framed fabric pictures to three sectioned wall hangings. Her work is incredible and the attention to detail is fantastic and shows how talented she is. Jo's recent wall hanging work can take up to 6 months to do through a combination of hand and free machinery embroidery. Jo had always excelled in painting and drawing whilst at school but she explained in her day you were not encouraged to go onto Art school but to leave education and go out to work. She rebelled a little from this and went onto teacher training where she studied Art and Literature. Jo went on to became a teacher for up to 11 year olds and found her most enjoyable experience was when she taught Art and Pottery in a primary school. She especially loved the dance, drama and painting side of her teaching within schools. School plays were also a great time for her when she could get really involved in costume and
26

scenery design. Often her husband Peter would help paint the sets they designed for these plays over their weekends. Jo recalls it being lots of hard work but great fun. 20 years ago Jo moved to Competa and loves living in the village and thinks Andalusia is a very special place to be. She is full of enthusiasm for the place and loves the people and she enjoys her work immensely. As I walked round her workshop Jo explained the wall hangings to me as they each tell a story. The story of Persephone and the Birth of the Seasons is depicted in three hangings. This was completed in the summer of 2010 and was exhibited for the first time in her Workshop during the 2011 Annual Walkabout. She is now working on a new hanging The Fall of Lucifer. It was easy to understand the wall hangings and the incredible details within them that told the story. I really enjoyed my time talking to Jo she is an interesting person with a great talent that needs to be seen other than in photo's. Please take some time to pop into her workshop and see her artwork on Friday mornings the first open day will be July 8th.

Day for life
"Adding Life to Days.”
A fun family day in aid of cudeca cancer care hospice
D
I am delighted to advise that the Day for Life raised e4150 for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, a wonderful achievement in the current economic climate. My grateful thanks to everyone who helped to make the day such a success; all the walkers together with their generous sponsors;
uring May the sixth annual sponsored Walk for Life took place, this year with 61 ¾ participants accompanied by seven dogs. The ¾ being Lily’s bump who walked at 8 ¾ months pregnant but now I am pleased to congratulate Lily on the arrival of her gorgeous baby girl, Leyla. The group included seven children who once again turned the walk into a race and for the second year running, Carla Gray won. The event then extended into a Day for Life at The Rural Alberdini Hotel, Competa where throughout the day, approximately two hundred people visited an open air general craft market and a separate Flavours of the World Food hall sponsored by Alison’s Cakes; Rummy’s Catering tasting Caribbean; Right Lifestyle – Healthy Mediterranean; Antonio Chavos, Alberdini – Spanish; Sugar and Spice – English; Teteria Hierbabuena – Moroccan. Children were entertained with a bouncy castle; face painting and a non-alcoholic cocktail bar. Andy Time, Fabel and DJ Tom provided wonderful musical entertainment during the day. The first raffle prize a”500e voucher to spend at Portichuelo store” was won by Oliver R with yellow ticket 247, at the time of going to press Oliver needs to claim his prize by contacting me, Cindy Jones.
Alberdini; The Grapevine Magazine; Sugar & Spice; Todo Papel; Jose Luis Gutierrez; Lynn Gallon; Rachel Winspear; all the volunteers who assisted on the day and everyone who came along and joined in the fun.
I also want to say a special “thank you” to the team who helped me arrange the day; I couldn’t have done it without your ideas and support; - two CAMPO team members, Debi Bond and Penny Sparks, together with Inez Leniere, Jean Sampson and Remy Goeloe. Fundraising events such as Day for Life enable Cudeca to continue to provide a “Special Kind of Caring” palliative care to over 5800 advanced cancer patients per year, throughout the province of Malaga. Cudeca may not be able to add Days to Life but they can and do add Life to Days. Again, thank you all for your wonderful, generous support. Cindy Jones

eing a lawyer is more than just a profession. It is a way of life. The legal profession consists of many different ways of being able to practice law. The individual personality of each lawyer influences the type of lawyer one is. When someone is looking for a lawyer for a specific matter, apart from looking for a professional, he/she is looking for a person with particular qualities. In my opinion, important qualities are empathy (in order to understand the needs and worries of the client), theoretical and practical knowledge (broad knowledge thanks to a large, supportive team and structure; an important, established, well known and strong Firm), vocation for this profession (it is a pleasure to practice law in order to help people) and have that “spark” (and charisma) to achieve, with all the abovementioned, the best and most convenient results for our clients. In many cases this “spark” is innate, and must flow through ones veins.

Not satisfied with simply seeing things as they are and then just ask “why?” but seeing things that can be achieved and ask “why not?” Not to engage in copying and repeating things without thinking, but being original, going one step further than the others, to be the innovator and for the rest to simply copy you. Because with thorough theoretical training, with vocation and the spirit of sacrifice, being innovative and original, seeing things that others couldn’t could notsee, see,and andasking askingoneself oneself“why “whynot?” not?”and and having the personality and conviction to take that new step that others have never taken, will always allow you to be one step ahead. Although others will copy you and then take the same steps, this does not mean that they have your legs (your mind… your genetics), because your mind is already planning the next step and is not on the one that has been copied. Talleres Simon
L
ooking for a reliable, trustworthy English garage? Well, look no further. With over 24 year's experience, Simon Alle of Talleres Simon is waiting to meet your motoring needs. In an interview with Simon, he talks about the opening of his new workshop, in the Poligono la Panoleta industrial estate, in Velez Malaga. So Simon, why did you decide to open this workshop? “I had been working as a mobile mechanic in this area for the past six years, and pretty much all of my work came through recommendation. It got to the point where demand became so great that opening a legal business, with a fully equipped workshop seemed the next logical step” Are there any special offers for new customers? “Absolutely. I am pleased to offer all new customers a free vehicle inspection. This includes brakes, tyres suspension and steering. If any work is needed, I will give a no obligation quote and explanation of what work is needed, and why. We are also offering a 10% discount this month on servicing this month” What is the most common service you provide and what does it involve? “The most popular service tends to be the full car service, which includes the following; The replacement of spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and oil. Check and top up of brake fluid, anti freeze strength and power steering fluid levels. Inspection of brake, steering, suspension, lighting, and washer and wiper systems. Full body and underbody inspection, tyres, tyre pressures and wheels/bearings.
36
The Grapevine
Call or send me an email for a quote. I think you will find the pricing very reasonable.” What other services are popular? “Our pre ITV inspection is very popular. Many people find the process of taking the car through Spain's MOT system, quite stressful, especially if they are not confident in Spanish. Clients tell me that just knowing the car has had a thorough once over, gives them peace of mind” “And if you find the whole process of the ITV a bit much, Talleres Simon offers an ITV package. I will book you an appointment, pre ITV inspect the car, and take it for its test. We can also offer a collect and deliver service, so we come to you!” Now the summer is on its way, is there anything we should be doing to maintain our cars? “My advice is to make sure you get your cooling system checked. Talleres Simon offers this service for free. If your antifreeze level and strength is correct, this reduces the likelihood of corrosion in the cooling system. This, in neglected systems leads to a buildup of an orange coloured sludge, which decreases efficiency and leads to overheating. By doing a little preventative maintenance now, you could potentially save yourself thousands of euros in repair bills. And let's face it, the last thing you need is to be stuck on the side of the motorway, with your family, in the blistering heat of the Spanish summer. Also, because of our mountainous landscape, and condition of our roads, it is important to know that your brakes are up to scratch, so come in for a free brake check.”

Save our Herbs! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
T
his month, I'd like to draw your attention to a new EU regulation that came into force on 1st May 2011. Under this regulation hundreds of traditional herbal remedies have been banned. Our right to choose between herbal medication and the drugs offered by the powerful pharmaceutical companies has been removed. Under the ruling every herb used must be registered and it has been calculated that this will cost between €80,000 and €150,000 – a sum that is way beyond the reach of many small producers. Remember that this price is per herb; multiherbal products have to comply by registering every herb used, no matter how small the content. Proof of the difficulties being experienced by producers isapparent -80% of the products registered so far only contain a single herb. Many traditional medicines from China and Asia, for instance, can contain as many as eight or ten herbs. But there's another strangler too. Products have to have been marketed in Europe for a minimum of 15 years. Even then, only herbs that treat minor ailments will be allowed to apply for registration. So herbal products for more serious conditions, such as cancer treatment, diabetes, dementia, liver disease, arthritis etc.

will not be available once existing stocks have gone. The new ruling will also affect 'simple' things like some herbal teas. We will not be able to buy, for instance, feverfew tea (great for alleviating headaches) yet sage tea will be available. What is the difference between feverfew and sage? Well one classifiesas a drug; the other as food. There are around 3000 botanical species known to have some curative/palliative effect in humans; there are probably thousands more of which we have already lost all knowledge. Currently just 1% of these have been registered. And, guess what? The registrations have all been made by large European pharmaceutical companies. This leads to yet another problem. Consumers of herbal products would (naturally) assume that they are taking a natural product. But the pharmaceutical companies mix the herbs with a multitude of other ingredients – things like artificial colourings, preservatives and sweeteners, detergents and polymers. In other words, all the things we are trying to escape – the E numbers and carcinogenic products. They do this to extend shelf life of their medications and make them more 'attractive' to consumers.

Historically, of course, we have always used herbal medicine and 80% of the world population still relies upon it as their main form of healthcare. Modern medicine, on the contrary, is 'the new kid on the block' and somewhat brash too! World War I brought a huge demand for medicines and herbs were widely used. Garlic and thyme were highly respected for their antiseptic properties. And the great garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll, planted a large tract of land with calendula (marigolds) which were sent to France to treat burn victims. World War II saw a similar demand, but there was a sinister twist to events. In 1941 the UK Government was at odds with the pharmaceutical world for having, inadvertently, levied a double tax on them in the form of Stamp Duty and Purchase Tax. To avoid having to make a large repayment in cashstrapped times, and to placate the chemists, the 1941 Medicines Bill was passed. This precluded the sale of herbs in any form other than dried, thus dealing a huge blow to the herbal industry and leading many frustrated customers directly into the mouths of the pharmaceutical companies.
cases of chronic stress and to improve energy and memory levels, can have a blood thinning effect similar to warfarin. So care must be taken. But think of the thousands of cases of death/injury caused by orthodox medical mishaps. Think thalidomide. Think of the immense damage done by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Think vaccine damage. Think how Governments poison us with fluoride, food additives, pesticides in food production, preservatives, genetically modified foods etc.
In recent years, natural producers have fought back and there has been a huge increase in sales of herbal products again. Surveys show that around 30% of adults in the UK have taken herbal medication in the last two years. The pharmaceutical companies are, once again, getting twitchy. They are losing control, losing markets and losing money! Their problem, of course, is that herbs, vitamins and natural supplements are all naturally occurring products and cannot, therefore, be patented. So, here is their answer. Ban production by all the little guys in the form of crippling legislation and they can then take over the market. You might ask why the EU is doing this. I think it's quite simple – they are in the power of the drug companies who really don't want people to live more healthily – after all, there's no money in that!
Herbal medicine is not the same as orthodox medicine. There is a place for both; let them coexist. Let's be safe, yes, but that doesn't mean a total ban.
The amount of herbal products on the market has proliferated. Sometimes, harm can be done because people are taking the medication inappropriately or mixing them with orthodox medicines. For instance, St. John's wort, commonly taken for depression and anxiety, can interfere with the functioning of some conventional medicines, including the contraceptive pill. Ginkgo and ginseng, used in cases of chronic stress and to improve energy and

Why I am concerning myself with this? It is something I feel strongly about. It does affect us hugely as gardeners too. We have only, in fairly recent years, woken up to the heritage of plants that is being lost to us. For many plants it is already too late; they're extinct and who knows what wonderful cures may have been lost. If this law is allowed to stand very many more plants will be nudged closer to the abyss. Even if you don't agree with herbal medications, there is a wealth of plants for our gardens that may also be lost.
If you want to add your voice in support of our herbal medicines, go to http://www.avaaz.org/en/eu_herbal_medicine_ba n/?vl They are hoping to have the case referred to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The Brits they are a-changing! ot so many years ago in the UK the going out for something to eat meant going to a Beefeater pub for a meal that consisted of prawn cocktail for starters, a well-done steak with chips for the main course, followed by a slice of black forest gateaux all washed down with a bottle of Blue Nun wine. But things have moved on now; it would probably be a sea food platter with Marie Rose sauce, a medium-rare steak with French fries, followed by Black Forest gateaux flavoured ice cream. The wine? Who knows, maybe something from the New World but certainly costing anything from £25 upwards. The main thing now is that Brits love food; cooking it, eating it and watching it made on the telly (gastro-porn as it is known) by celebrity chefs. For me there is nothing more satisfying than watching a top chef prepare a beautifully prepared meal whilst eating a packet of crisps or a fish finger sandwich. The recipe for the latter incidentally, is in an early Jamie Oliver cook book I have. And there was me thinking that chefs live on lobster thermidor and champagne.
served in British restaurants. The man responsible for this change was probably Egon Ronay, a Hungarian whoose Guide to British Eateries published in 1957 is believed to have been the first guide of its kind and went to become a bestseller and the restaurants mentioned in the book proudly displayed a disc in their window to publicise the fact. So maybe us Brits expect more now from our eateries, such as the gastro pub (which basically is a clean pub, nicely decorated and with sausage and mash for £5 more than the pub down the road) which could be a reason for us turning into a nation of complainers. Before it was easy; no matter how bad your meal was, when asked by your waiter/waitress how it was we always answered “lovely thank you” already knowing we would never eat there again and tell all our friends or even passers-by how bad the food was. No, now we have become all American and shouty, causing a scenes and demanding to see the manager etc. This does not sit easily with me; I still prefer the “everything is fine thanks” method.
The rise of the celebrity chef has primarily been down to the improvement in the standard of food

writing numerous letters about poor meals, poor service and general impoliteness. Although she does seem to have a point for each complaint letter, such as being pushed by a security guard or, my favourite which is when she was referred to as 'grey coat' by a shop worker in a well-known UK department store, as in “grey coat is next to be served”. Despite saying to said shop worker “I do have a name and it is Miss Smith” (real name changed to protect the innocent) he continued to refer to her as grey coat to a colleague, hence the letter which resulted in a letter of apology from the company and a gift voucher for £25. As with most things we do seem to follow America, where customer services are second to none. I could not believe it the first time I was in the states and ordered a beer in a bar. The barman was interested and friendly before throwing a bottle of beer into the air, catching it and removing the lid with a bottle opener in one movement before placing it lovingly on the bar. Sure, he was probably after a tip but this is so much nicer then the shouted “yes?!” a way I have been 'served' in a UK pub in the past. This again seems to have changed and I cannot imagine it
happening now, but with better customer services comes more opportunity to complain. Moving to Spain is a bit if a shock to the system and being curtly served or dealt with in a shop or bar is something you have to get used to. But maybe that is why us ex-pats are here; the simpler, less, shall we say false way of life. The barman mentioned above probably said goodbye to me with a “have a nice day” which always sounds so insincere that you wonder if they are taking the wotsit. I hope this does not come over as anti-American; it is not meant to at all by the way. So we seem to have changed a lot, even in the 40 years or so of my life time; just look at what is on television now. It is hard to imagine the youth of today (god, how old do I sound?) sitting down to watch a gentle comedy such as the Good Life isn't it? Not enough swearing and violence probably. Oh, we seem to be back to celebrity chefs again, Pot Noodle anybody? Andy Wilkes

Diary of a Thespian – The Curtain Call
S
o we were rapidly approaching the actual performances of this year’s summer Panto, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Every rehearsal was now as good as a dress rehearsal every night with all of us in full costume with props and most of the sound effects and lighting cues done. It was coming together but the ‘heard but not seen’ prompt, Mave was still audible as lines were still being forgotten. Would we just be acting while Mave read the whole script out loud? Tickets were moving fast and a few nights were pretty much sold out already. It was becoming the hottest ticket in Axarquia. We had a big promotional push to do as a few of the hackters were to head off to the studios of Talk Radio Europe to do a slot on the Hannah Murray afternoon show. Chester Williams (Snow White), Jean Sampson (Cruella Crone) and myself as Sleazy headed off to the ‘dark side’ of Málaga with Tom Sobel, the director and Debi Bond in her role as PR person. Now, the thing with the panto is, like it or not, you start to take on your character’s pseudonym. As you walk round the village you start to hear things like,

“Morning Snowy.” “Morning Sleazy” “How are you Sickly?” “Fine thanks, Huntsman.” “Well, Cruella Crone. Ding Dong! Have you caught anything in your fishnets today?” “Still waiting, thanks, Sleazy!” You get the idea. As we set off for San Pedro and the TRE studios I acquired another pseudonym. As Hannah Murray introduced her show for the afternoon we were mentioned as being on with my introduction being, “….and Sleazy played by Alice Howard!” Alice? Who the **** is Alice? As if being Sleazy and all that came with it wasn’t bad enough it was being suggested I might now be a tranny. Listen, what goes on behind closed doors stays behind closed doors. Needless to say it stuck for a while. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea, but it isn’t the first time I’ve been called Alice. Since when does a “K” look like an “E”? Jean Sampson, who has a regular health slot on Harry…sorry, Hannah Murray’s show (I will get my revenge!) was concerned it might be her last appearance after bringing a male Snow White, a pervy dwarf and her own interpretation of a sexy,

evil side-kick. Reputations were on the floor all in the name of charity. The interview went well and all along the Costa people would be flocking to Cómpeta to see the CAMPO’s version of Snow White. Well, maybe. We then reached the week we would be finally performing our version of Snow White. A rehearsal on Sunday evening was followed by a full dress rehearsal on the Monday. We had an audience of perhaps 15-20, who ended up sounding like a full house. It was great to get some feedback by way of response and heckling to our show. Now bring on the paying punters. We started on Wednesday with a half full ‘theatre’, but again the enthusiasm of the audience sounded almost like a full house. The hackters were buzzing and despite not being word perfect with the script some were already ad-libbing and bantering with the audience. With the full houses we were expecting this could get messy. Every night was different in its own way with drunk audience members shouting from the off, a few walk-outs apparently and a few whose vocal contribution means I’m sure we’ll have a few ‘newbie’ hackters next year. Oh yes we will! This year there were no enforced ejections (I said “ejections”!) and all audience participation was part of the evening’s entertainment. Whilst every evening’s audiences were great and we couldn’t have done without their generous contribution, I think Saturday night just got the award for the best night. The best hackter ad-lib had to be from ‘Huntsman’, Peter van der Water, about the cat fur used to make the ‘pudenda’ growing back in 3 months. Sorry, you had to be there but it resulted in the longest ‘corpsing’ as Queenie, Jo Robinson, was doubled up for 3 minutes. Brilliant! Every audience member made an invaluable contribution but a special accolade must be for Val Finesilver (should be on stage with a name like that!), Sickly's, sorry, Debi Bond’s Mum. When the dates for the Panto were announced Val had her flight booked and bought tickets for all five nights as well as sitting through the dress rehearsal. If we needed an understudy, for sure Val would have stepped in for any part as she must have known the show back to front. Wonder what she’d have looked like in a pair of Sleazy’s pervy glasses and a cod-piece? We’ll never know. She handled Crone’s vibrator more times than an Anne Summer's rep and had a leek every

night....of the vegetable variety in preparation for Badger's entrance. Officially a Panto groupie. After the last night the cast and some audience members witnessed the equivalent of the CAMPO Oscars, voted for by the cast and crew. Diva went to Chester Williams as Snow White who generously handed it over to Peter van der Water (Huntsman) before Chester was awarded Most Battered and Bruised. This was in reference mainly to Phil Smith’s (Grumpy), treatment of Chester as he kicked and prodded him and threw him on the ‘death bed’! Phil managed to win Panto Virgin whilst Jean Sampson (Crone) was awarded Rising Star. Most Helpful backstage Member went to Penny Sparks and Tom Robinson received the Director’s unsung hero for his invaluable help on voice coaching as well as doing a worringly excellent job as a stand in for Jo as Queen while she was away. You’ll be in it next year, Tom. Sleazy, yours truly, got Biggest Ham – the actor who basically was the same on as off stage. I’ve never had an award for just being myself before, but hey ho. Or should that be Hi Ho? Despite all the individual recognition however acknowledged, everyone made as much contribution as the next person. It has to be remembered the hackters would be naked without great costumes and scenery, nobody would be greeted and made welcome without front of house, hackters would be stuffed when we forgot our lines without our Prompt and they’d be miming without props, unable to get on stage without the stage hands, there’d be no stage without theatre management, entrance cues would be missed without a stage manager, the show would be in the dark without lights and sound, everyone thirsty without our drinks runner, pale without make-up, clueless without great direction and a Panto with no point or purpose without production and publicity. If I’ve missed anybody then a huge thanks to them as well. Most important of all, at the time of going to print, the Panto has raised in excess of €5,000 for the chosen charities. A sterling – or should that be euro – effort by everybody. So that, dear reader, is the end of the Thespian’s Diary on the annual Panto farce. Call that an ending? Ending my a***! ALICK HOWARD

espite the wettest winter on record, Fires in the Campo are back with us. Photo's show the quick and easy devastation which took place one sunday morning off the TorroxCómpeta Road. The fires are the subject of a special Police Investigation. Campesinos are said to be reluctant to leave their homes when firework parties take place on neighbouring properties. Laws governing fires and fireworks are regularly disregarded. One lady is reported to be suffering severe nervous exhaustion since flames came within 20 feet of her bedroom. In summer, Sierra Cómpeta is like a tinder box and residents are being asked to be extra careful with barbecues, cigarette ends etc.. Residents recently found themselves fighting 10 foot flames at 4 in the morning. Fire Engines from Nerja and

Grave Matters
“Send not to ask for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee” John Donne
D
eath comes to us all. Quite apart from our own departure, we all have to deal with the death of family or friends. This is hard on home turf; what happens when someone dies in Spain? It's uncomfortable to think about but you need to know. With Spain's different traditions you may otherwise be rushed into a funeral 24 hours after the death, with half the family still in England, and an inappropriate service delivered in Spanish by someone who never knew the deceased. This is a horrible way to say goodbye, leaving family confused and without closure – but it can be avoided. Who to contact An interpreter. Unless your Spanish is good the language barrier leaves you vulnerable at a time of grief. If you locate an interpreter who knows the system then they can guide you through it, making every step easier. The deceased's doctor if they were getting medical care, and/or the police (Guardia Civil), to inform them of the death. A funeral home or “tanatorio”. There are many – search on the internet, in the yellow pages or ask your town hall. If death occurred in hospital, the hospital authorities may recommend one, but

beware: some hospital staff take commissions from funeral homes, so they may recommend one that's best for them but not for you. Do NOT sign anything unless you understand exactly what it commits you to. Don't let yourself be rushed into a decision that might affect time, place and nature of the funeral. Procedures If death occurs at home and the deceased saw a doctor in the previous four weeks you should contact that doctor. He/She will attend the body, issue a certificate and may contact a tanatorio to arrange to have the body collected. If the deceased wasn't 'under the doctor' you must contact the local police. They'll want the deceased's passport and/or residencia, and confirmation of who is next of kin. They will attend the body to authorise its removal or, if necessary, to inform a Forensic Judge; in the event that an autopsy is required this Judge will authorise removal of the body. Before the body is taken, you may wish to remove rings and other jewellery. You will be asked to visit the office of the tanatorio to which the body is taken to make funeral arrangements. Remember, you don't have to use a tanatorio you don't like; you can have the body transferred to one of your choosing.

When someone dies in hospital they call the contact number given when the person signed in (not always next of kin!). They'll want to know where the funeral is to be held. If they receive no instructions within 24 hours they will cremate the body; there's no service and the ashes are disposed of to a communal site. But don't be rushed into a decision – there is NO OBLIGATION to cremate or inter the body immediately, as long as the hospital (or the tanatorio) are informed. The body can be held at the hospital/tanatorio mortuary for a daily charge of around €80, while you consult the family and decide what to do. It can stay there for 6 months, if you want – as long as someone is “in charge”. You should visit the tanatorio you select as soon as possible. They need to see deceased's passport and residencia (unless the police already have them) and need to be told the deceased's place and date of birth, marital status, address and the names of both their parents. They'll also need to see your passport and residencia for you to make arrangements. Choices The funeral arrangements are your choice. There is a daily charge for use of the morgue to preserve the body prior to burial, or you can arrange for the body to be cremated and the ashes returned to you, but you are NOT obliged to have a funeral within a day or two of a death. The tanatorio may invite you to view coffins for purchase and will want to know if the body is to be dressed (you should provide the clothes), and 'laid out' for viewing - this is the Spanish tradition, with viewing in an open casket, usually at the deceased's home, for at least 24 hours after death. If you plan a cremation you are asked what you wish to do with the ashes, since there are regulations on different urns; for example, ashes to be taken back to the U.K. need a special sealed container. However, tanatorios are liable to assuming that any service will be Roman Catholic and delivered in Spanish; costs of a non-Catholic officiate will not be included in normal charges and you need to make it clear that you will be arranging something different. For an English language service you should liaise yourself with the relevant church. You may prefer to arrange for non-religious service with a humanist celebrant: I know of two in the area,

Bryan Stapley (bryanstapley40@yahoo.co.uk) and Natasha Johnson (info@malagaminister.com). Such a service focuses on the life and beliefs of the deceased and offers opportunities for individual testimonials, with the aim of making the funeral a celebration of the departed life.
Preparation To avoid distressing the people you leave behind, think what you want for your own funeral and TELL someone, whether it's next of kin, your will executors or a close friend). Maybe put it in writing with a copy with your i.d. papers or your will. A second issue is cost. Funerals in Spain are expensive and the deceased's assets may be frozen at death, complicating arrangements – not least because tanatorios won't release the ashes until the bill's settled! Repatriation of a body is also complicated and expensive. The simplest solution is to buy, and pay for, a funeral plan. They can usually be paid in either a lump sum or by interest free instalments. If you go back to the U.K. you can normally recover up to 80% of the money - this is different from Death Insurance policies, which are more expensive but will pay out wherever you die. By making a plan you can design your own service: it is possible to have a traditional British funeral in the town church, pall-bearers and all – if you arrange it in advance. It is straightforward (and cheap) to 'book' a niche in your local cemetery – but again, this is also best organised in advance. If you don't have a plan the Town Hall do pay for some funerals (on a rotation basis with the funeral directors in Torre del Mar and Velez Malaga)…but only if you have less than €1000 in your bank account: otherwise the cost must be recouped from your estate.
As for me, I planned for my ashes to be scattered in these wonderful hills I walk among. That way, a whole generation of walkers, when they got a bit of grit in their boots, would take me walking again. Sadly, scattering human ashes in the mountains is illegal…so I'll have to think of something else! Rose Jones

The Indian While riding one day, a cowboy meets an Indian riding along with a dog and a sheep and begins a conversation. “Hey, nice dog you got there. Mind if I speak to him?” “Dog no talk,” replies the Indian. Unperturbed, the cowboy continues. “Hey dog, how's it going?” he queries. “Doin' alright,” shrugs the dog, looking up. The Indian looks shocked. “How does your owner treat you?” he continues. “Real good,” replies the pooch. “He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food, and takes me to the lake once a week to play.” The Indian's jaw drops in disbelief. “Mind if I talk to your horse?” continues the cowboy. “Horse no talk,” states the Native American. “We'll see,” says the cowboy. “Hey horse, how's it going?” “Good,” smiles the nag. “And how does your owner treat you?” “Pretty good,” says the horse. “He rides me regularly, brushes me down often, and keeps me in a shed to protect me.” “Good, mind if I talk to your sheep?” asks the cowboy. “Sheep liar,” snaps the Indian.

NEW GOVERNMENT IN ALCAUCIN The new government in Alcaucin has promised that the legalisation of illegally built homes in the town will be one of its main objectives. All those who voted for the two SOHA (Save Our Homes Axarquia) candidates in Alcaucin, Mario Blancke and Michael Stevenson, have made a real difference. Their party, Los Verdes, won two seats and hold the balance of power. As a result they have formed a coalition with the Partido Andalucista and the Partido Popular to throw the PSOE out of power for the first time in almost 30 years. The coalition's biggest priority is the legalisation of houses. The new mayor, PP’s Domingo Lozano, has said that they will also make sure that the town’s new General Plan for Urban Development (PGOU) is completed. DRUG SALES AT RINCON SCHOOL A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Rincon de la Victoria for allegedly selling hashish at the entrance to a local high school. Local Police, who were watching the school as part of
an operation to prevent drugs sales at schools, saw a suspicious encounter between two pupils where a girl gave a boy a €10 note in exchange for a small bag. The police identified the girl and found that what she had bought was a small amount of hashish. They then intercepted the seller, who studies at the same high school and found he had 10 more doses hidden in a glasses case in his pocket. He was taken to the Local Police station and then handed over to the minors’ prosecutor.
