Solutions 4 U specializes in all the legal aspects that surround property purchase and sale.

Buy With Confidence From experience we can say that many properties that are for sale have some irregularities in their paperwork, however it is our speciality to eradicate them. Whether you are selling or buying you want to do so with a sense of complete confidence. Working with an impartial Lawyer we are therefore currently updating the Title documents to a good amount of properties, so that when you buy with us you know that the property is registered correctly. We can also advise on Planning Issues which can save endless difficulties later on.

Have Peace of Mind For those who already own a property and may have concerns, we offer a FREE consultation whereby you can bring along a copy of your Title Deed and IBI (Rates) certificate and we will establish whether all your property is registered correctly. If inconsistencies are found we will explain fully what needs to be done, give you a time scale and a written estimate of the cost. Once completed you’ll see where the corrections have been made, thereafter happy that all your property is fully registered.

Solutions 4 U – easy parking right outside the office On the Torrox/Sayalonga Rd junction, ½ kilometer before Cómpeta

Editors Note..... As I am writing this I am eagerly anticipating a few days away without the kids. Something we haven’t done for 9 years and it is all thanks to parents in law who are taking the children back to the UK for a week. I am sure I will be lost without them but a holiday without twin 8 year olds is a fantastic gift I think you will agree! Next month I am sure I will write about what we did and where we went. For those of you that haven’t got anything planned over the next month don’t forget its Feria season! We have been sent the program of events for the Competa Feria (see Town hall news on page 46) For the Feria details in your area just contact your local Town Hall.

News in Spain DRUNK POLICE CHIEF INSPECTOR DRIVES INTO A LAMPOST IN CEUTA A uniformed Chief Inspector from the National Police in Ceuta, named with the initials J.L.G., has been arrested for driving his patrol car when drunk at 3am. He was tested with an alcohol level of 0.90. He was arrested by local police agents when he was seen first hitting a bollard, and then driving into a lamppost. He will appear in court shortly. The Chief Inspectoris the coordinator of night time services in the city. GRANADA FIREMEN SAVE MAN’S PENIS STUCK IN A TUBE Granada fire-fighters have avoided the need for a penis to be amputated after it got stuck in a steel cylinder after a 52 year old man had placed it there in what appears to be part of a sexual act. Doctors in the emergency department of the Hospital Ruiz de Alda in Granada were unable to release the member, as it seems the penis was suffering what is described as ‘an important inflammation’. The doctors found they could not cut the tube which was some two centimetres diameter and four millimetres thick, and something over five centimetres long and which was strangling the penis, stopping the erection from going down. The fire service decided to cut the tube with a do it yourself Bremen circular saw which the sub-inspector brought from his home and the fire service did not have such a device which could be operated with the needed precision. Ideal newspaper says the procedure took two hours and was carried out in the hospital operating theatre. A spokesman from the fireservice said it was the first time they had intervened in a hospital operating theatre, although they are often called to extract organs trapped in vending machines, such as fingers or arms. The hospital has declined to comment on the case.

SPANISH COUPLE HELD IN GIBRALTAR FOR KISSING THE SPANISH FOOTBALL TEAM SHIRT IN THE STREET. A couple of Spaniards were taken to the Police Station on Gibraltar last Sunday, after one of them took a photo of a t-shirt from the Spanish football team, and kissed the coat of arms. This resulted in a group of Gibraltarians starting to insult the couple. El Mundo reports that one of couple, Inmaculada Rueda, said that she and four friends decided to enter Gibraltar, ‘to buy tobacco’. ‘We crossed the frontier with no problem and once in Gibraltar we saw many flags for the Queen’s jubilee. It did not bother us’. But her boyfriend, Jaime Berjarano, was wearing the Spanish t-shirt. ‘We were walking down Main St and we saw a man with two cockatiels, one on each shoulder. Jaime placed himself to have his photo taken, and it was then he kissed the shirt’. The couple then claim their heard shouts of ‘go back to your country’ and other insults from the passersby. We replied that they had no education and then they made a phone call and the police arrived. NO SEWAGE PLANT BUT NERJA PICKS UP BEACH QUALITY CLASSIFICATION. Only a third of the 123 beaches in Málaga province have obtained some form of quality certification. Just four beaches in the city, and another five in the Axarquia have obtained the distinction for their accessibility and services. There are 25 blue flags along the coast in 11 municipalities this year, despite the fact that the integrated water treatment plant has not been completed in Nerja. However the Q for Quality has only been granted nine times in four municipalities this year, Málaga city, Vélez Málaga, Nerja and Algarrobo. It is of note that not a single Q ranking has been achieved on the western Costa del Sol.

man in central Russia had to be rescued by emergency workers from a rubbish chute after he jumped into it to hide from his girlfriend. He plunged three floors from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Tyumen, Siberia, before getting stuck. Residents then heard the 31-yearold man's cries for help. Rescue workers had to use tools to cut him free. He was not seriously hurt. He had had a row with his girlfriend, officials said, without elaborating. Soviet-era buildings in Russia frequently have a metal rubbish chute in the stairwell, with a latch opening on each floor. Tyumen emergency service officials contacted by the BBC said the incident happened late on Wednesday, but the man is already back at work. "According to the 31-year-old victim, he jumped into the metal chute on the eighth floor to escape his girlfriend," a statement on the service's website said. The officials said there had been a similar incident in Tyumen a few years ago, again with a happy outcome.

migratory bird has caused alarm in a village in south-eastern Turkey after locals mistook it for an Israeli spy. Villagers' suspicions were aroused when the bird, a common European bee-eater, was found dead in a field with a metal ring around its leg stamped "Israel". They called the police after deciding its nostrils were unusually large and may have carried a microchip fitted by Israeli intelligence for spying. It was taken to government experts for examination and declared safe.

44-year-old Hawaiian surfer has been recognised by Guinness World Records for riding the biggest wave ever thought to have been ridden. Last November Garrett McNamara caught a 78ft wave at Nazare, off the coast of Portugal, beating the previous 2008 record by more than a foot. McNamara began surfing at age 11 and became professional six years later. He has described his achievement as a stroke of luck and has used his feat to urge people to follow their passions. The giant wave was located above an underwater canyon famous for being the world's biggest wave generator. McNamara has said that on the day he broke the record, he at first had not wanted to take a ride but his friends urged him to catch a few waves. "Everything came together. angers in Australia's Northern Territory have shot dead a saltwater crocodile with a taste for dogs, clothing and other oddities, local media report. The 3.5-metre long (11.5ft) crocodile was attacking a dog at a beach near the community of Galiwinku on Elcho island on Tuesday when it was shot. The injured dog survived the attack. Police said they found the remains of another dog and a football in the crocodile's stomach. It had also swallowed a pair of children's shorts and a nappy. A local official was quoted by ABC news website as saying the crocodile posed a threat to the community, as it had been terrorising pets in the area.

Incredible and Edible J

ust as flowers come in and out of fashion, the same is true of vegetables. But we’ve noticed, at the garden centre, that growing your own fruit, veg and herbs, in general, is certainly a trend that is growing rapidly. I’m not surprised – there are so many good reasons to grow your own. Paramount to many of us is pollution from chemicals and genetically modified crops. These modern ‘advances’ that we all have to live with now mean that we just don’t know what is happening with our food – fruit, veg, herbs, cereals, meat and fish - so why not take control and refuse to ingest so many of those deadly chemicals that give us lifethreatening diseases. The garden chemical companies are as bad as the big pharmaceutical guys when touting their wares – money is their God and they don’t care how they make it, as long as there’s lots of it. A greater variety of organically grown foodstuff is now available, but at a price! And growing your own is hugely satisfying, for many other

reasons too; the flavours of freshly picked crops are unbeatable; it’s good exercise, when done in moderation; it’s highly therapeutic and relaxing; you have the chance to try unusual varieties (ones with real taste instead of commercial growers’ choices which are selected for good looks, long shelf life etc.) and, of course, it’s so convenient and self-satisfying to just nip into the garden and pick a glowing basket of crops. Traditionally, whenever hard times strike, people turn to the land. Our magnificent Mediterranean climate means that we can produce a wonderful variety of fruit and veg year round and by using seeds and cheap plug plants, organic techniques, companion planting etc. it doesn’t have to be expensive. When the heat of July and August strikes, it’s a good time to find a shady corner and make plans for the next gardening season. It’s delightful to browse through seed catalogues with a cool glass of wine in hand and let your imagination flow a little – lose yourself in dreams of what you’ll be

growing and eating in the year to come. It’s said that a plot of 1000m2 can keep a family of 6 in fruit and veg. Not many of us will want to be that ambitious and it’s better not to bite off more than you can chew initially. Do remember that your vegetable area can be highly ornamental too so there’s no need to tuck it away. Use wonderful architectural plants like globe artichokes, ruby chard, glowing yellow courgette fingers and wigwam spires of tomatoes and beans to give height. It’s amazing how much a small space can produce when you use the verticals too and under-plant in the dappled shade thus produced. Smother a pergola or archway in kiwis or passion fruit – wonderful looking and very productive. Make your plot very personally yours, a little whimsical if that’s the way you like it. If you’re the sort of person who likes to be organised, then work out what you want to grow and how much of it. If you really cannot tackle your soil, raised beds can be useful. You can fill them with good soil and make the job easy and very productive. For town house dwellers or apartment owners, copy my granddaughter and use fertiliser-rich grow-bags – we have them for sale at the garden centre. One of the keys to achieving good crops is rotation – or moving types of crops around so that they do not return to the same piece of soil for 5 years. This considerably lessens the risk of disease. Some groups, brassicas for instance, are the most demanding in nutrients, whilst the root veg require least so your rotation can also take this into account. Vegetables are normally split into 5 groups:

can be grown wherever convenient merely avoid planting in the same spot too often. Complimentary cropping is useful. The onion family, for instance, should be planted in proximity to the carrots as they deter carrot fly. Equally, some plants are antagonistic; tomatoes and potatoes, although belonging to the same family do not grow well together. Catch cropping is also a great idea. Quick growing crops like lettuce, radish, beetroot etc. can be planted between slower-growing plants. These little ‘quickies’ are also ideal scattered around in small clumps, maybe at the feet of some companion plants like calendulas and various herbs which will help deter aphids etc. Don’t neglect soil improvement or you’ll never achieve good production and frustration will be your only crop! Vegetables and fruits are demanding – they need both nutrients and moisture. Dig in some organic compost/fertiliser or well-rotted manure so that their roots have something to reach for. Deep-rooting plants are less thirsty. If you’re using manure, make sure it’s well-rotted or it will burn your plants. Gardening brings you down to earth. The garden depends on you to nurture it, but it will nurture you in return. It's what fills our stomachs and fills our souls. Be healthy – grow and glow .

Day for life- Adding life to days

uring May, the seventh annual sponsored Walk for Life took place, this year sixty participants including four children and accompanied by six dogs. Of the sixty walkers, six were part of the much smaller group of sixteen who walked in 2006 on the first Walk for Life; myself Cindy, Eleanor O’Neill, Jean Barmstone, Lynn Gallon, Sandra McDonald and Sue Keeley. Jack Watson, aged thirteen was the first to finish the walk this year with his dog, Nube. For the second consecutive year, the event then extended into a Day for Life at The rural Alberdini Hotel, Competa with entertainment for both adults and children. The golf competition was very popular with all age groups and definitely brought out the competitive edge in everyone! On a relaxing note, some adults enjoyed Reflexology with Wendy of EGO, Competa. Children were also entertained with a great range of activities to include cake decorating and face painting. The children’s area also had their own BBQ offering hamburgers and hotdogs whilst the adults enjoyed Remy’s Caribbean Kitchen followed by a large selection of homemade cakes lovingly made by many local residents. Geoff Murrell kindly compared the day and provided the entertainment of live music. Once again, I continue to be slightly overwhelmed at the generosity of the sponsors for our walkers, as at the time of going to press, I am still collecting all the money but we are on target to match the amount we raised last year which was 4150 euros. See August edition of

Grapevine for total amount collected. In addition to myself, three individual walkers deserve a special mention as they each exceeded over 250e in sponsor money; Barry Warner, Lesley Forrester and Marlene Heffernan. A big thank you to the sponsors of the wonderful raffle prizes who once again supported Cudeca; Alberdini, La Casona, Debbie Brodie, Debi Bond, Meson Las Gemelas, Jill Caldwell, Katherine Patterson, Kevin Deavin, Laura, La Taberna de Oscar, Perico, El Pilon, Sue Vanderwater, Sugar & Spice, Tin Tin and Vendimia. In addition, thank you to Grapevine, Todo Papel and Sugar & Spice for your help and support. . I also want to say a special “thank you” to the team who helped me arrange the day; I couldn’t have done it without your ideas and support;two CAMPO team members, Debi Bond and Penny Sparks together with Inez Leniere, Jean Sampson and Remy Goeloe. Fundraising events such as Day for Life enable Cudeca to continue to provide a “Special Kind of Caring” palliative care to over 5800 advanced cancer patients throughout the province of Malaga. Cudeca may not be able to add Days to Life but they can and do add Life to Days. Again, thank you to everyone who came along and supported the day. Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer

The Action for Animals' "Scruffs Dog Show" at The Pavo Real, May 12 2012.

T

his year, Action for Animals was asked to organise and be beneficiaries of the annual Scruffs Dog Show at the Pavo Real. We are a small charity, so this was a rather ominous task for us, but it was an offer we couldn't refuse and our dedicated team of volunteers set about the task at hand, with enthusiasm and optimism. The event was a great success and on our final count, we raised 2067.21â‚Ź !!! This money will be used to continue our work in Competa and the surrounding villages and we will be donating 500â‚Ź to new animal charity, T.A.I.L, to help with their projects down on the coast, in Torrox.

Here's the list of winners:

And what a day it was! There were belly dancers, stalls and many other attractions and of course...lots of dogs! There were trophies for all winners, medals for second place and rosettes for third. And every entrant received a little doggy bag of goodies. We hope you enjoy the photos, which were kindly taken by Sally Murrell. There are more photos on our Facebook page: Action for Animals (UK/Spain)

We'd like to say a massive thank you to all our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Schmid Construcciones, all our helpers and everyone who attended on the day to help make the event a whole lot of fun and a resounding success. Thank you! Action for Animals needs people to foster animals until they can be permanently rehomed and volunteers to assist with our "Trap, Neuter, Return" projects. We are committed to preventing cruelty and promoting kindness to animals and also aim to provide financial assistance to neuter pets, if you are unable to fully meet the cost yourself. But to do all this we rely on your support. Art Exhibition in Frigiliana B oth artists, Christa Hillekamp (Germany, Cologne) and Albert Meagle (Ireland, Dublin) have lived for more than twenty years in the mountain village of C贸mpeta and have, linked by their common interests, become friends. Christa and Albert also give classes/courses in acrylic and watercolour painting(www.artworkshop.eu). In their free time they paint together in the lovely Axarquia countryside around the white mountain villages. This exhibition reflects how both painters interpret the landscape, the ancient towns and the special ambience of this fascinating area. The viewer is invited to contemplate two very personal interpretations of what each artist has viewed and experienced.

Christa Hillekamp (mixed media): For me art is a constant process of development. Frequently I start a painting in which I simply follow visual impressions (scenery, nature) and my intuition. But the constant change of cultural/political circumstances and social movements of our time have a considerable effect on my work. They transform the paintings during the creative process untill I feel my own impressions and emotions reflected in it. So, more than reality, the work becomes an impression of my emotional mood. All the materials used in the paintings: earth pigments, stones, sand, wood, glass, metal etc, are collected from the different places where my travels have taken me.

Christa Hillekamp and Albert Meagle Using the lovely medium of watercolour I hope to be able to interest the eye of the observer. In this violent, unsure world of ours, my wish is to provide access to a quiet, restful place where the viewer can contemplate the world and the way I interpret it.

Albert Meagle (watercolours) When I was young I was fascinated by professional artwork and always attempted to produce work as skillfully done as possible. Plein Air painting is the greatest and most satisfying challenge for me. I love to go outdoors and try to capture the moods and different light effects in the changing landscape. C贸mpeta and the surrounding countryside are a nature lovers麓 paradise. The brilliant Mediterranean light on the landscape provide the artist with countless themes and subjects for painting.

The Waiting Game!

T

here are rules, we have laws that tell us what we absolutely can't do; society that tells us what we probably shouldn't do and norms and etiquette that keep us in line. So we're civilised right? Wrong – there are occasions when in spite of all the above we'll abandon all of society's rules. The first is the post office. You step inside and see an enormous queue (there's always an enormous queue). You see a long row of computers, cash registers, stamps and forms but only one employee. In a world where you can do almost anything online, from having groceries delivered to your house to streamlining TV to your specific requirements, there are still things that have to be done at the post office. It feels like someone is forcing us to waste 40 minutes standing in a line, because they know that we had no alternative. It's the same feeling you get in the (similarly understaffed) queue for airport customs. You have no alternative and therefore they have gone out of their way to inconvenience you, and something in your brain temporarily snaps because of it. At the airport and the post office, unlike

38

The Grapevine

anywhere else, when someone sees and enters a queue, they immediately don't believe it. They think, "No, no, this can't be the queue - I just want to post a birthday card/take a short flight. This can't possibly be the right queue; there must be another queue for me. No one ever budgets their post office time correctly, everybody always assumes it'll be an in-and-out trip, even though it's never been an in-and-out trip, not once for anyone, ever. If you want to see hate on a person's face, go to your local post office and people-watch. Watch them seethe with hatred while in line. Hear them sigh when someone in front of them forgets to fill out a form or asks to borrow a pen. And suddenly the people we usually have the most time for in society, mothers with young children and pensioners, are the most hated people of all. “Why do they have to be here now?” you ask yourself “They have all day to come to the post office, why do they have to come at exactly the same time as me?” I've been queuing in the supermarket or at the cinema and had friendly conversations with strangers to pass the time, but never once has that happened in a post office. Patience is gone, empathy is gone and

To advertise call 637 028 873

All you care about is posting your stupid birthday card to your stupid friend, and you are not eager to make more friends in the process. Airports are also not places to make friends. As level-headed as I tend to stay, I am at my absolute worst as a human being in an airport terminal, (especially Luton). I not only get angry, I lose all sense of empathy and reason, and this is before you throw into the equation the trauma inflicted on us all by budget airlines – that is a whole article on it's own. There is something about the airport that makes you think you're the only person who needs to get anywhere. As you stand in the queue worrying that you might miss your flight, because the person in front of you seems to be the only person who missed the events of September 11th 2001and is arguing animatedly in favour of keeping their litre bottle of Old Spice and their nail file. As they procrastinate you shuffle from foot to foot in pure panic, it starts to feels like everyone else is there purely to inconvenience you. You have to suppress the urge to shout, "Look, I know you're all here because you like queuing, but I actually need to go somewhere; somewhere important. Another example of the breakdown in society is shopping at Christmas or other holidays. Every year, you hear stories about how people on Black Friday (America's biggest shopping day of the year) will scream and fight, trample across crowds, smash through doors and occasionally stab people in an effort to get the best present. Shops become unholy dens of snarling savage frenzies. I'm not only talking about Toys R Us here because you can almost justify that. Someone wants to get the best present for their child, so it makes sense that they'll knock a few people over to get it. If I see the perfect gift for my sister or Dad and you have your eye on the same gift, I may well kill you to get there first. But no, I'm talking about Supermarkets. There are two kinds of people that you will see in a supermarket on Christmas Eve. There are the ones standing in the queue with a smug smile on their face waiting to collect the goodies that they ordered in October and the rest without exception will be the least stable people you will ever meet in your life. And the craziest thing is that there are loads of these people. If

To advertise call 637 028 873

venture into a supermarket on Christmas Eve you'll see these people randomly grabbing anything they can find. They of course started off with the usual grocery list, Turkey, cranberry etc. but as they realised that most of the items were already sold out, they just panic and buy ... anything & everything. Whatever they can find that might, in some parallel universe, combine itself into a tasty Christmas dinner. You'll see crazy men running around with arms full of spam, tomato puree, and a giant bag of non-branded Cheesy Wotsits. I've got to say mate, if that's your contribution to the Christmas party, they probably won't invite you next year. I mean come on, which bit of Christmas has taken you by surprise? Did the 10 foot tall tree bedecked with shiny balls, not give you a clue? Did you miss the constant stream of adverts that start just after the “back to school” adverts, which in turn start on the first day of the summer holidays. Even if you missed all the clues Christmas has been on the same day for the last 2000 years, how did you not notice? Obviously the way to avoid these situations is to plan in advance. Get to the airport three hours early. You'll have time to chat to the nice person in the queue in front of you and point out the six foot poster asking them to take their coat of BEFORE they get to the front of the queue. Try posting your friend's birthday cards in advance rather than the day before and whilst you are lying on a beach on your summer holiday take a moment to order your Christmas turkey on line. However back in the real world that isn't going to happen. So how about a bit of alternative therapy – gloating. Take the time to go to the post office when you don't need anything and just watch that line of seething hate consumed people. Ahh feel the stress just slip away. Take a trip to the supermarket on Christmas Eve even though your turkey is already in the oven and your presents are all nicely wrapped. No lastminute food dash for you; buy something inconsequential like a sponge, light bulbs, or something equally pointless and well-stocked. I think you'll find that in the land of the crazed, freaky last minute Christmas shoppers all trying to get the last turkey, the man buying toilet paper is king. Andy Wilkes

Grapevine caught up with Nicola, a registered Zumba instructor or Zin as they’re known in Zumba circles, to find out what it’s all about. “Zumba is just a really fun way of getting fit that combines dance with exercise to usually latino, sometimes pop, but always uplifting music. Its not a dance class as such as the philosophy is all about moving at your own pace and enjoying yourself. The feedback we always get from newbies is how fast the hour has flew” Nicola was a former competitive dancer and brings amazing energy to the classes. She told us, “ We have a real mixed bag of ages from 20 to 70, all nationalities and upwards of 30 people in Competa for each session. The complete mix of people means we have a great atmosphere which is what Zumba is all about. I’m really pleased how the Spanish have taken to it, but it’s not surprising really considering how much they love their music, dancing and ferias. The only

Winter Wanderings Part 2

A

week later, and sad duty done, and we're again at Portsmouth, ready to have another stab at getting back to Archez. We decided to travel down the west side of France this time and then down through the centre of Spain - hoping that the weather held out. As seems to be normal in the north of France in the winter, it was grey, drizzly and windy to begin with. Very much like Cornwall in that respect, and it wasn't until we reached Saintes that we saw a glimmer of sunshine. Saintes, on the River Charente, is a lively market town where smart and classy shops surround the old quarter, with its narrow streets and ornate cathedral. Further down, our sat-nav took us through the centre of Pons. This was not our intention, but sometimes I have to bow to Tim's better judgement and admit that he was right. Such an attractive place with its pristine sandstone buildings and artisan shops. So quintessentially French, it would have been a shame to have missed it. Into the Foret des Landes area now, heading towards Bordeaux. This forest is the largest in Europe but, as much as I love trees, I have to say that after you've seen your first million identical pine trees then the novelty seems to wear off, and I was relieved when we pulled into the resort of Mimizan, with the intention of seeing the largest sand dune in Europe. No - we'd come to the wrong place! The Dune du Pilat is in fact south of Arcachon, and we'd driven right past it. Never mind, it was too cold and windy to go

44

The Grapevine

struggling up a sand dune anyway, so we moved on to the marina at Gastes, at the edge of the forest. Good for walking and cycling here, with the bonus of mixed woodland - not all pine trees! Further along we were passing lovely pinkwashed, half-timbered houses nestling in amongst the trees. All closed and shuttered for the winter, these were probably holiday homes, and very nice too. The affluence continued as we reached the resort of Biarritz, haunt of the rich and famous. But the town is very welcoming to us lowly motorhomers and has provided a dedicated parking area just two minutes from the beach. Not beach weather, but great for a walk and to watch the mighty Atlantic rollers come crashing onto the sand. The town centre was busy even in January, and we enjoyed looking in the shop windows and being astounded by the prices. The coast road from Biarritz passes through the picturepostcard harbour of St. Jean-de-Luz and then on to Hendaye, which is literally the last resort in France before you reach the Spanish border. It was at the train station in this town that a welldocumented meeting took place in 1940 between Franco and Hitler, the outcome of which was that Spain did not join forces with Germany. The Basque region of south-western France and northern Spain is so beautiful, with an "Alpine"

landscape of fields, mountains and chalets, but with sheep instead of cows. It was to show my full appreciation of this outstanding area that I felt I just had to try out one of the local specialities "gateau Basque" which is, in fact, a butter-pastry pie filled with almond paste and a rich cherry conserve. And to this end I was hotfoot into the nearest patisserie where the gateau was taken off its plinth in the window, placed onto a doily and put into a box, which was then tied with ribbon. All this,no doubt, to justify the cost (which I didn't tell my husband until we'd finished it a few days later). It was delicious. We were into Spain now and climbing higher. The weather began to turn wintry with a few snowflakes falling. "Oh, how pretty", I was saying as I looked out at the view. My husband wasn't quite so enchanted however - I could tell by the tightly-closed mouth and furrowed forehead - especially when we were soon in blizzard conditions and things started to look dangerous. We turned around to go back down to lower ground and then followed the guidebook to a parking area at Legazpi. This was in a lovely location and, after a restorative coffee, we went for a snowy look around. We were at an open-air museum dedicated to the iron industry of the region, with walks leading off into the surrounding countryside. Definitely a place to revisit in better weather. The sun had come out, the snow had melted and we were zipping along past Burgos and into the Duero region, the producer of some of the very best Spanish wine. The town of Penafila looked very prosperous with its grand bodegas and enormous hotel. We followed parts of the River Duero itself on our way to the town of Cuellar. We were in new territory now as we had never been this way before, and we were looking forward to seeing new places. We were not disappointed. The town of Cuellar, whilst not being particularly outstanding, boasts an impressive castle built by the Dukes of Albequerque, and with the old town within its walls. Driving on towards Avila, you are now on the central plateau - a vast open space as far as the eye can see, and which gives you a feeling of being right on top of the world. It's in a place like this that you begin to appreciate and understand the enormity of this huge, beautiful and compelling country. Around Avila the terrain changes and the ground is strewn all

To advertise call 637 028 873

around with great boulders. This "Dartmoortype" landscape continues on down to the gorgeous Embalse de Burguillo - a good stopping place. The embalse even has its own beach! Toledo - one of the great cities of Spain associated with the artist, El Greco, who spent his later years here and the writer, Cervantes, born in the province. It is also THE place to come if you ever feel the need to buy a sword! Toledo is famous for steel production, and the industry goes back more than a thousand years. At night the city is floodlit and, from our vantage point at the campsite outside, looked absolutely magical with all the spires and towers of the very many churches, mosques and synagogues glowing pink on the skyline. Alongside field upon field of solar panels we headed on towards Valdepenas, another great wine-growing region, and then through the hairpin bends of the spectacular Paso de Despenaperros. Skirting Jaen, instead of heading for Granada, we turned towards Martos and beyond, into the enormous olive-growing area. Spain is the world's largest olive oil producer, with much of it imported by Italy where, it is said, they mix it with their own and call it Italian- the rascals! Nearly back now, we spent our last night at the town of Cabra at the edge of the Sierra Subbeticas. What a nice place! The parking area was right next to an open-air auditorium which hosts concerts and plays in the summer months. Nearby there was an attractive moorish-style public garden, with paths leading through trees to open countryside, where the hillsides were covered with a species of purple iris. Next morning we pointed Merlin in the direction of Malaga and headed homewards. It was great to see the almond trees with their clouds of blossom covering the slopes - one of the most uplifting sights of Andalucia. And so another journey completed. Many new places visited and lots more photos for the album. But like Dorothy says in the Wizard of Oz, there's no place like home, and it was a good feeling to put our key in our own front door. Now, where's that kettle?! Jan Rowlands

the propert y feature 2012 T

he Spanish propert y market is expected to become more realistically priced over the coming months as sellers and their agents react to the global economic situation and propert y values in the country continue to see a small decline. People considering sending money abroad with the intention of buying a home in Spain may wish to take action quickly, given that advisors predict the market will bottom out in 2012 before starting to recover in the next few years. "Starting in 2013, a slight upturn in prices is expected and will signal a more widespread return of buyer confidence and the start of the next upswing in Spanish house prices. This upswing could even result in a more permanently positive position for Spanish propert y, with the drastic cycles seen in recent times "tempered" by more sustainable lending practices as the economic downturn encourages investors to act more cautiously. Steady growth in prices can be expected bet ween 2013 and 2018 assuming the market maintains the ten-year peak-to-trough cycle it is currently involved in. With this in mind, investors may wish to consider purchasing Spanish propert y over the coming year in order to take advantage of the current low in housing value.

Founded by Denise Hill, who has lived in Cómpeta with her family since 2000. With Sunset Properties you can be assured of a friendly, reliable and professional service.

Sunset Properties covers the whole of the Axarquía region with a wide selection of properties for sale, this choice being increased through working with other agents both locally and on the coast. Denise’s extensive experience, detailed local knowledge and network of contacts in Town Halls and with reputable lawyers, builders, electricians, etc offers both buyers and sellers an excellent all round service in which they can have complete Denise Hill - Sunset Properties confidence. Julie Wilkins, the owner of Solutions 4 U, has been in the Cómpeta area for more than 20 years. We not only sell properties but specialise in all the legal aspects that surround property purchase and sale. It is our aim to eradicate irregularities in property paperwork. Buyers will not just be told that a property has a Title Deed, but whether the description corresponds with the actual existing property. We work with a Lawyer, firstly, in correcting any inconsistencies we find on behalf of the vendor, and secondly giving our buyers the assurance that the property they buy is fully up to date, registered on the Title Deed, the Land Registry records and with the Dept of Catastro. Solutions 4 U has a number of highly desirable properties for sale exclusively with us that you won't find anywhere else, with prices to suit the most ardent bargain hunter.

How Bazar T

he current economic crisis has seen a boom in Chinese bazaars and pound shops; during a crisis life goes on and we still need to replace the things we use every day. So buying a torch with a built-in alarm clock, radio and compass for 3€ seems like a bargain does not it? But deep down as we leave said shop (in the wrong direction because the compass isn’t working properly) we know that if the torch lasts for 3 months we have done well. And just to define ‘working’ I mean that you will have to twist the lens, take out the batteries, hit it first against your hand, then a hard unforgiving surface whilst repeating the mantra “work you b*****d”. We know that we could have bought just a torch (list of functions On or Off) for about the same that would have worked but would have missed out on a bargain. When I was little the term “Made in Hong Kong” was synonymous with rubbish, now it seems “Made in China” means the same thing. Or does it? Many quality UK-based retailers like John Lewis and Marks and Spencers sell items that have been crafted by the Chinese, and at a good price. I saw a piece on the BBC news a few years back featuring the owner of a jewellery firm who had sent out a tender to make men’s cufflinks (what, as opposed to woman’s cufflinks? You know what I mean). Only 2 UK companies bothered to

62 62 The TheGrapevine Grapevine

by Andy Wilkes

respond to the tender compared to numerous ones from China. As part of the tender process the companies had to send some samples which he then showed. The samples from the UK companies were, well to put it bluntly, crap. Then ones he showed from China were perfectly made and to top it all were a fraction of the price of their UK competitors. What was he supposed to do? Like all things in life we have to make our own judgement and choose well. Certain clues are there for us to make this decision, the price and “As seen on TV” on the box. This can be seen on many a cheap item when we all know that if it had been on TV it would have been on Watchdog or another consumer programme after setting fire to somebodies dog. Like most things in life we could use a car analogy. If I could choose to buy any car I would like it would be a Mercedes, BMW or Audi. This car would be reliable, comfortable well-built etc but the reality is I cannot afford said car so you buy what you seems the best value for the money you have. Just to expand on this, when I bought my second-hand van from a dodgy Spanish version of Arthur Daley in Malaga he opened the bonnet to show me how clean it was. Knowing nothing about engines it was a deal clincher for me. Oh and the fact that I could afford it!

The first time I went into a Pound shop I was with my wife. There were many bargains to be had. So much so that my wife was picking things up and saying “how much is this?” and then before I could say “it’s a pound because it’s a pound sho…” she would be off to the next thing “wow, how much is this?” so I said “it’s a pound because it’s a pound sho…” and so on. All that excitement and I think we just bought some Velcro. Having a shop the carrier bag issue often raises its head. Whilst without doubt carrier bags do damage the environment at least, certainly in my house, they are often used numerous times. I doubt of the same can be said for Little Johnny’s plastic pirate ship that came with a whole host of plastic parts all totally out of proportion “have you seen the size of Bluebeard’s canon?” Is it just me or do we all have a constant Carry On film going on in our heads? Oh it’s just me then. Anyway, the ship will break or not work and the whole lot including packaging will be thrown away never to be played with again. But it was a bargain from the bazaar and he loved it when you took him to see Pirates of the Caribbean,

how were you to know. Next time forget the pirate ship. Buy him a quality 300 watt torch. Ahh wouldn’t it be lovely to see his little face light up……. Actually items from pound shops and bazaars do make great comedy gifts. Over the years my sister-in-law has received a bejewelled (100% plastic) tissue box cover, an Indian restaurant style illuminated picture complete with scrolling waterfalls, a musical Pope (with flashing lights) and a pair of plastic birds that sang a lovely (ahem!) song when you approached them. So two things to note here; 1) I do think these types of shops have a “I need a plastic widget that I am only ever going to use once so I don’t care if it breaks” kind of niche. Oh, and 2) never get on my Christmas present list!

WALLING T

he appearance of walling is often the last thing to be considered when building a wall, with cost being the primary decision driver. When purchasing an existing home, owners can sometimes inherit unsightly or rather plain looking walls. Dressing a wall can greatly improve its appearance at a reasonable cost. Walls can be dressed in a variety of different stone cladding or false brickwork. Stone cladding is dressed to shape, with particular attention paid to the spacing between the stones (as too wide a gap will look unsightly). The stones are set in place using special adhesives, as cement alone with not be strong enough. The grouting can be colored to add to the effect. Terracotta tiles or ladillo bricks can also look very attractive.

64

The Grapevine

Too often walls here in Spain are simply rendered and painted white - whilst this is fine why not consider giving your garden walls a unique look that will separate them from the rest? Through on-going consultation with the client, an appreciation of the aesthetics of the home and garden and access to locally sourced natural stone we can help beautify your wall. A newly dressed wall should greatly enhance your property’s value and look. Contact LT Construction today to discuss your options in bringing life back into your walls or visit our website to see the very many options available.

The sun will come out tomorrow…… I

hate musicals (except for South Pacific and Carousel – it was my Mum’s fault) and I hate Annie especially. Although I am not totally sure if I have seen it in its entirety, I have definitely sat through and suffered the precocious little girl with the red curly hair lisping her way through the Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow. In spite of not liking it, the sentiment of the song is a good one (In case you are wondering I just Googled the lyrics as I only know the first line) and confirmed that they could be applied to the recession we are currently in. Is it a recession, or are we back out of one again? Who knows? The 0.0000001 of a per cent seems to make all the difference to the stock markets that control our lives. Like most of us I have had a gut-full of the doom and gloom and recession-speak. I know “gut-full” is a slightly vulgar term, but it sums-up nicely how I feel about the constant drone of bad news. Well it is not all bad; Sky News recently turned their frowns into smiles for 4-days of blanket coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Now that is over the small FTSE ticker will return to the top left-hand side of the screen again showing numbers most of us do not understand. What we do get though is the little arrow that means if the markets are up or down. Why don’t they sack Eamonn Holmes and get Christopher Lee or Vincent Price to host the show? I do not understand why newspapers such as the Daily Mail and the Express have resorted to bleak headlines on the fronts of their papers. Surely the old way to sell newspapers was to put something on the front that people actually wanted to read. Or in the case of the Sun something on page 3 for men to look at. Now I am not condoning or condemning page

3, but it does seem a bit 1970s to me. That’s probably because I spent a large part of the 1970s staring at or sticking photos of page 3 girls on my bedroom wall. In fact that is the reason why my Nan stopped buying the Sun and started buying the Daily Mirror as she thought she was corrupting my innocent little mind. Anyway, I digress, now I would not be surprised if there was not a page 3 stock broker to bring us more doom and gloom “cor Dave, look at the size of her trade deficit forecast” Now it may come as a surprise to some of you but I would say 99% of what I write in the grapevine is true. Sometimes I have to change names to protect the innocent and sometimes I may write that in the Under 12 Cup Final I scored all 10 goals versus the Cubs when in fact I was playing for the Cubs, in goal, you know that kind of thing. Sometimes it pains me too much that what I write is true. Take for instance this dialogue with my wife I had only last week. I walked into our shop to find my wife with that ‘I have a plan’ look on her face, so it did not surprise me when she said “I’ve been thinking….” I followed her eyes to the shelves; not the shelves, please not the shelves, don’t let it be the shelves!! She continued “……and I think we need to move all of those shelves up by 3 inches” If this was an adults only magazine I could probably get away with what I actually said, but let’s just pretend I said “Oh but my darling wife I feel you are hideously mistaken” Yeah, that will do. But what, I hear you cry has that got to do with the recession? Well I do not want to give my wife credit for her ludicrous shelf plan, but ultimately it is shelf moving that will get the wheels moving again. I go to the ferretería to buy more Rawlplugs. After I

have left the ferretería he checks his stock and realises he needs to order more Rawlplugs. So he places an order with Rawlplug salesman which means that month the salesman has met his sales target. To celebrate the salesman takes his wife out for a meal yada yada yada. This is what will get the economic house of cards built again, not rooms full of so called ‘experts’ in Davos drinking vintage Champagne or politicians winning elections by claiming to have a master plan. Clearly these experts did not predict the length of the current recession; in fact they did not even see it coming. I would guess they have as much chance of hatching a cunning recession busting plan as they would have if they put all the IMF’s money on the favourite in the 11.30 at Chepstow.

according to the council of mortgage lenders. What you mean this is a worldwide crisis? Maybe in tabloid land the journalists have not noticed this as they are all too busy running around screaming (and writing) “We’re all going to die!!” yes we are; that is the only certainty, now shut up whining and let us get on with our lives. So, fellow ex-pats; look out of the window at the blazing sun perched into a deep blue Mediterranean sky. Forget what the papers say, for tomorrow they will just be chip wrappers (or cat litter tray liners) the sun will be shining. Life is good! It could be worse you could be in rainy Britain. Carpe Diem! Andy Wilkes

More recently I have noticed a new trend emerging from the tabloid newspapers; namely knocking Spain by printing headlines like ‘Now they want to come home! British ex-pats flee the continent to get away from Eurozone turmoil’ This type of scaremongering is not going to help anybody. Week after week there are stories about expats who are unable to pay their mortgages or want to go back to the UK as it is “too expensive in Spain now” Rubbish, they are clearly forgetting how much Council tax is or city centre car parking. I think these people have confused the word ‘investment’ with the word ‘home’. Another story published recently stated that last year more people left Spain than arrived for the first time in more than 10 years. This was made to read like a mass-exodus of Brits fleeing the country. However after a little bit of research I found that last year the number of foreigners in Spain actually increased. The rise in numbers leaving Spain was due to Spanish nationals going to another country to find work. Now I’m no Richard Branson but surely that spells opportunity for budding lifestyle entrepreneurs. These stories would make you think that inability to pay a mortgage is only happening in Spain. Well how about the 36,000 homes that were repossessed in the UK during 2011 with "a higher number of people facing more serious problems in 2012"

Decorated with Andalusian charm, it has recovered the warm, friendly ambience of the wine cellars with its braced arches, brick columns and seasoned wood. Along with the delicious muscatel wines, dry, sweet, young and mature, made from the Rome variety of muscatel grapes, the local gastronomy includes the best cooked meat and sausages in the district, black puddings, pork loin, chorizo sausage, which you can buy together with other typical products like honey, raising, figs, olive oil, ceramics and rugs, in the 'wine museum' ..... A charming place.

THE EX WIFE

THE DOCTOR

When I saw my ex-wife yesterday with her new boyfriend, I couldn't believe just how much he looked like me when we were still together.

I said to my doctor, "Would you like to go out for a drink some time? I find you really attractive." "Sorry, I'd love to, but I can't," she answered.

Miserable.

I said, "I understand, it's the doctor/patient thing, isn't it?"

THE QUEEN My wife said I've got no respect for the The Queen. I nearly choked on my swan sandwich.

"No, it's not that," she replied, "I've just got your test results.”

THE CAT

STEVE S- ARCHEZ

My mates call me 'The Cat' when we go out on the pull.

DOCTORS & NURSES

I'm not sleek or stealthy, but whenever I appear the birds always scatter.

A woman brings eight-year-old Johnny home and tells his mother that he was caught playing doctors and nurses with Mary, her eight-year-old daughter.

TOWELS

Johnny's mother says, "Let's not be too harsh on them... they are bound to be curious about sex at that age."

Apparently, towels are the biggest cause of dry skin.

"Curious about sex?" replies Mary's mother. "He's taken her bloody appendix out!”

THE THRONE What's the big deal about being on the throne for so long?

STEVE S- ARCHEZ

I was on the throne for at least 20mins this morning and I didn't get a concert.

THE GIRLFRIEND I said to my girlfriend on Saturday, "How would you like to go shopping with the girls, get some new shoes, get your hair done in a different style and then go out for a couple of bottles of Chardonnay?"

There was a flotilla though!

THE PLUMBER The plumber just told me our toilet will be fixed at the end of the day. I can't wait.

She said, "That sounds brilliant." I said, "Good, because we're breaking up.”

STEVE S- ARCHEZ The above jokes were sent by Jason (Milton Keynes) - via Facebook

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA ‘HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ROCKING IN SPAIN?' Fed up with fería? then come and have a drink and be entertained by something very different and completely free

THANK YOU FROM ONE VOICE One Voice is a Competa based group of enthusiastic singers who meet once a week to enjoy making music together. Because we also enjoy raising money for charity, entry to our concerts is free, but we ask our audiences to make voluntary donations as they leave. You could say that it is free to get in but you have to pay to get out! At the end of our concert in April, we collected €317. We gave €200 to Caritas, as we always want our efforts to benefit the local community. These donations are then distributed to the needy by the Mayor and Competa’s priest. On this occasion, as a group, we also decided to donate €100 to the Costa Animal Society. The remaining €17 went towards the cost of music and programme printing. One Voice would like to say a big thank you to all of our supporters and to express our thanks to you for coming along to our concerts and for your kind donations.

VÉLEZ MÁLAGA BUDDAH TEMPLE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS. The Karma Guen Buddhism temple was established near Vélez-Málaga in 1981, by Pedro Gómez who purchased a small hamlet. He opened it in 1987 and this year it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Now it is a reference for Buddhism for the South of Europe, and this year’s annual meditation course, for those who want to reach the liberation of the mind and achieve a state of complete and pure happiness, has attracted 3,500 people of 62 nationalities. Pedro Gómez told the EFE news agency that he found out about Buddhism when he was living in Copenhagen, and came into contact with Ole Nydahl, one of the few western lamas, who had been given instructions from the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu to spread his teachings to the West. In 1987 Gomez showed Ole the site of his project at Aldea Alta, and they decided to create Karma Geun, an enclave for mediation and retreat.

Accoustic Roots COMPETA EX MAYOR The trial is due to start of Leovigildo Lopez Cerez, exmayor of Competa, charged with planning law violations. Lopez Cerezo is accused of granting planning permission for land not classified for development. Also standing trial are four councillors, a municipal architect and the town hall secretary Eight villas located in different parts of Competa were given planning permission between 2003 and 2006. All should be pronounced illegal, claims the Prosecution department, which is calling for four to be demolished. The former mayor allegedly connived with councillors and the architect to give planning permission for building works they knew were illegal. Lopez Cerezo was found guilty of an earlier planning law violation and corruption in 2009. Two years later he was barred from working in the public sector.
