I love the summer which I think I say every year! I also look forward to the school summer holidays too. No more homework and studying with the kids for 3 months. No more running back and forth for their activities and more afternoons in the pool and BBQ’s at night. I love the heat, siestas, long evenings and I feel great that I am living in Spain. British woman is on life support after falling 50ft from a Spanish hotel's window while she was sleepwalking. Amy Wigfull, 24, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was on a family holiday in Malaga when she fell from the fifth floor bathroom window. She suffered a broken back, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, punctured lung, fractured shoulder and cracked teeth, as well as bleeding on the brain. She is now on a ventilator in a Spanish hospital following the accident. Ms Wigfull's relatives said doctors believe she only survived because her body was in a relaxed state when she walked into the bathroom and fell from the window.

arío Barrio, 42, a Spanish celebrity chef and owner of a popular Madrid restaurant, has died after colliding with a cliff face in the Sierra Segura mountain range when his wing suit malfunctioned. Horrified attendees at the International Air Festival in the Andalucian village of Segura de la Sierra looked on in horror as the chef plunged to the earth. Ambulance crews attended the scene but were
fficials from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) have been calling on the national brothel-keepers' organisation in an effort to assess the contribution that prostitution makes to GDP. The almost impossible task of calculating the money generated by the oldest profession is being undertaken to conform with a European edict demanding that member states declare the percentage of GDP derived from illegal activities such as the sex trade, drug and people trafficking and contraband. Countries have until 2016 to comply. Adding up the contributions made by illegal activities could have benefits – increasing GDP has the effect of reducing the public deficit as a ratio of output, so sex workers and drug dealers may help member states to drop below the EU debt ceiling of 3% of output. José Roca, a spokesman for Anela, the association of clubs de alterne (alternate clubs), as brothels are euphemistically known in Spain, told El País newspaper that he thought it was a prank when the INE phoned asking for financial data. The statisticians wanted to know how many prostitutes were needed for a club to be viable. The answer, according to Roca, is 50. They also wanted to know the average charge per service (€40€70) and how many clients each sex worker saw each day (four to eight).

ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEWS UPDATE This month I have some happy news for you!

ack in March, three little kittens, just a day or two old, were found in a plastic bag stuffed into a pipe. They had been left to die a slow and horrible death. But their tiny cries were heard and they were brought into our charity shop, where Beth Mcavoy, one of our amazing volunteers, took on the task of hand-rearing them in the hope that they could be saved. After weeks of nurturing and bottle feeding they were finally ready for their new owners and we're so happy to report that each one of them has now found a new home where they're receiving the love and care they deserve after such a dreadful start in life. Just take a look at the photos of them! It's a happy ending, but none of this needed to happen. Our aim is to stop new born animals being abandoned by providing financial assistance for neutering. We promise to never turn away anyone who is in need of financial help to neuter an animal, here in

Cómpeta or the surrounding villages. You can help us achieve our aim by spreading the word. If you know anyone, a neighbour or a friend, who seems to always have a pregnant cat or dog, please tell them about us and our offer of help for neutering. All they have to do is come into The Charity Shop and fill in a form. It's as simple as that And then there was the pup. Naturvets called me about a little black and white dog, just a few weeks old and a boisterous bundle of fun. He'd been taken in by a caring couple who'd found him in the middle of a road in Cómpeta. Rehoming animals in such a small village is often difficult, so I don't know what I was thinking, but I scooped him up and took him into the shop with me in the hope that we might possibly be able to find someone who could foster him until we could find him a permanent hom I really didn't know what would happen to him when we closed the shop at the end of the day if
nobody came forward to foster. But I hoped for the best. I rang around but couldn't find anyone to take him on. But miracles happen! Just three hours later, one of our customers in the shop fell in love with him and offered him a permanent home. “Miki” is now enjoying his new life with a lovely family here in Cómpeta. We're always looking for people to foster animals like Miki and the three little kittens. If you'd like to help us with this, please come into the shop for a chat or ring the number below. And finally this month, we'd like to give a massive thanks to Campo, Pat Kirkbright and Geoff and Janice Tyler who've regularly been holding their quiz nights and cribbage nights in Cómpeta in aid of Action for Animals. Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN solution We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver, (Chrysopogon Zizaioides) It is used for stopping erosion and the grass has a huge vertical root system and grows to about 1 meter with roots 3-4 meters deep. The plants are 1 euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 100 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. LA BOUTIQUE Cooking Demonstration by professional Chef Javier Vilches
L
ast month I attended the cookery demonstration at la Boutique in Competa.
Those of you who know me would probably raise an eyebrow at that sentence. It is not normally something I would attend. Therefore I will be honest, Lisa from the Boutique invited me to come in order for me to write about it in the magazine. Once I found out it was 6pm to 8pm on Friday evening I was even less enthused! However, Lisa assured me there was free wine and we could taste the dishes prepared by the professional cook – so maybe it wouldn’t be too bad! I arrived at the demonstration which had started promptly at 6.00pm on the middle floor of La Boutique in the cookery section. The audience were both English and Spanish and the professional chef from Granada was able to speak in both languages to ensure everyone understood. The

Professional Chef was Javier Vilches, from the Javier Vilches School of Cooking in Granada and he brought along a couple of colleagues who helped serve what he prepared and to offer drinks throughout the demonstration. Once settled with a glass of wine I watched Javier produce a number of quick and healthy dishes using the Silicone Bake Ware called LEKUE. I was impressed, I am not saying I can’t cook but I don’t have much time to cook elaborate meals between work, 10 year old twins and their numerous activities. The first two dishes that I saw Javier prepare were a Spanish Omelette and Paella, both dishes the family love but I always say I don’t have enough time to do them. Javier produced both the dishes in less than half an hour and they were tasty and healthy using a minimum amount of oil. A red silicon LEKUE mould called the Spanish Omelette was the kit
used for these dishes. Javier then produced further impressive meals in minutes including Grilled King prawns in a green steam case and an Egg and Spinach starter in an egg steam case called an OVO. To finish up with he created carrot and chocolate cake pops and showed us how kids lollies could be made in fun shaped moulds. There is also a website www.lekue.es where many recipes can be found and further information on the moulds. The LEKUE moulds are all on sale at La Boutique and I have to say I was sold to by the demonstration as I bought the OVO and Spanish Omelette moulds and cooked both Paella and Spanish omelette on Sunday in a matter of minutes! The family were impressed and grateful to Lisa for inviting me to the demonstration and I would definitely attend another one there! See advert on page 71

DAY FOR LIFE 2014
T
he event on Sunday 01 June, 2014 wasn't actually advertised as a “Wet Tee Shirt Competition” but that's what the Ninth annual Walk for Life became!!! Just as the dedicated thirty five walkers set off from The Mirador, Competa, the heavens opened with torrential rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Each and every one of the walkers fully deserves every centimo of sponsor money for Cudeca as they got thoroughly drenched. In fact, during one part of the walk, down the Barranca in Competa, it was more a case of “Paddle for Life” as the water was gushing down the street!!! Twelve walkers didn't show up on the day but can you blame them? I certainly don't. Daniel Gray of Canillas de Albaida joined the walk for the first time and actually ran the 5km, I thought he was in training for something special but no, he was just trying to get out of the rain as quickly as possible!!! On completion of the walk at The Alberdini Rural Hotel, Competa at 12 noon, it was still raining but starting to ease off. This is where we discovered it wasn't just wet jackets which had soaked through to wet tee shirts but the entire walker's clothing was saturated. Jo Robinson, one of the volunteers drove home and came back with bags of dry clothing, very much appreciated.Sadly many of the stall holders didn't turn up as they presumed we'd cancelled our “Day for Life but “oh no we hadn't” However, the weather changed for the better and the sun came out, what a difference?!! Approximately a hundred staunch supporters of Cudeca events came along and certainly enjoyed our Day. Our Cudeca stalls; Bric A Brac, Cake and Raffle did a roaring trade.

Andy Time provided fantastic musical entertainment and at one point, even needed a parasol for some shade!!! During the afternoon, we also had two Flamenco Dancers, Lara and Nina from Pena Al Andaluz, Antwerp, Belguim providing a spectacular show, together with Isabel Lopez Ruiz on the guitar. The Alberdini prepared a Paellagigante and again donated 2 euros of every portion sold to Cudeca. Some twelve people competed in the Darts Competition, sponsored by Pavo Real, Competa which was won by Tim Gallon, with runners-up Steve Napier and Sam Fulleylove. I have so many to thank for their continued support to me and Cudeca, over twenty volunteers on the day, who willingly dedicate their time to help, many of whom help year after year, a sincere thank you, I couldn't do it without you. Also to the team who helped me organise the day, especially when we all agreed to move our annual event from April/May to 01 June for better weather!!! – Inez Leniere, Jake MacDougall, Jenny Napier, Jo Robinson, Karen MacDougall, Mave Moore and Scott McQuillan. At the time of going to press, I am still collecting the walker's sponsor money and the Cudeca tins are being counted. The generosity of our wonderful community never ceases to amaze me and I will advise you of the total amount collected in next months' Grapevine magazine.

The downward trend in the propert y market in Spain is drawing to a close and it is unemployment that is hindering a full recovery, according to the International Monetary Fund. With unemployment still hovering around 26% the real estate sector is unlikely to move into full recovery mode just yet, says the report author James Daniel, head of the IMF’s Spain mission. But the report does point out that the country’s economy has ‘turned the corner’ after economic improvements took hold in the second half of last year and continued in the first quarter of 2014. Indeed, it adds that the Spanish economy is now growing at its fastest pace since 2008. Home sales increased 14% in the first three months of the year compared to the last three months of 2014, prompting the Registrars to talk of a ‘change of trend’. There were 83,022 sales in the period of which 37,731 were new homes and 45,291 resales. Another healthy sign for the Spanish propert y market is the fact that mortgage approvals increased in March for the first time in almost four years. The number of residential loan approvals rose by 2% from a year earlier, the first increase since April 2010, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute. It was David's Mum and Dad who ran the local shop for years and with the sad passing of his mum and his dad's retirement the couple decided to move to Spain to keep the shop going. They explained there was always a plan to move to Spain but not necessarily Competa. However with Keith's retirement it seemed logical to come to the village and take over the shop, an already established business. Tracy will manage the shop and David will out help whilst also pursuing his singing career.
The gifts and souvenir section has expanded which now encompasses Spanish gifts, shabby chic photo frames, fans, lamps, candles, oil burners, fridge magnets alongside the normal selection of postcards, local books and guides.
Marco Polo has always been known for its books and DVD hire along with providing local information in the way of maps and guides. This will all continue exactly as before however they have now extended certain ranges in the shop for example

Tracy was quite honest to admit they weren't sure what buyers would like to see in their shop. They hope by extending the existing ranges and adding to them, such as their home and garden ornament section, there will be something for everyone to buy. However they will continue to invest in stock and no doubt will change what they sell over time to suit customer's needs and indeed keep the shop looking fresh.
Whilst Tracy has been unpacking the new stock and changing the shop around David has been out and about arranging gigs in Competa and on the coast. In the UK he was a black cab driver but also a successful singer. He has performed gigs all over Europe for example Switzerland and Luxemburg. His style is swing and was keen to point out he is s not a tribute act but sings all the favourites, Sinatra, Robbie Williams, Michael Bubble to name a few!. You may well have heard him before as whilst holidaying in Competa before he was booked for a gig in El Pilon and Cortico Paco where he would be keen to perform again. Marco Polo is now back to normal hours of 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm Saturday morning. I
´m sure you´ll all remember – and have read – that blockbuster book of a couple of summers back, 50 Shades of Grey and the two sequels. Well, this summer I´m offering you two further sequels so that you´ve got something really good to read over the summer months. Take it to the beach with you! So here we go with 50 Shades of Grey, Silver and Blue, in two parts. In honesty, I don´t think I´ll make the best-seller lists, nor sell over 100 million copies like the original book, nor be printed in 52 languages. I´m not much good at writing eroticism (or maybe I´ve just never tried) so the level of blueness will be dictated by the plants and the sultriness by the weather! I can tell that you´re disappointed already! But you will be able to loan it to your friends and get it back covered in grubby fingerprints and wineglass stains - just the same really. My first experiences – and passion - for grey, silver and blue were in Africa, with a climate very similar to ours here and far from the verdant greenness of English summers and mundane browns

of English winters! These steely shades look great under searing sunshine and, more importantly, are nearly always associated with drought resistance and heat tolerance. Many of these silver-plated plants are native to dry regions but a good many too are found on windswept mountaintops and salty coastlines – all found within our adopted homeland, Spain. Their adaptations to extreme growing conditions are ingenious and numerous. The light colouring, of course, reflects heat away and many are covered in tiny hairs that reflect sand, salt and solar rays too. Those same hairs form an insulating layer against cool night-time temperatures and deflect the wind thus decreasing water evaporation; equally, during the daytime, they can lower the temperature on the leaf surface by several degrees. Thick waxy type coatings perform the same purpose and both are useful at deterring herbivores. Many form low growing rosettes of leaves which funnel any rain or dew into the root area. These devices may seem infinitesimal but they often make the difference between life
and death and usually thriving instead of surviving. Many of these plants that we conceive to have grey leaves are actually green and it is the colour, length and density of the hairs that give the grey sheened appearance. A good indication of a densely hairy, woolly or furry plant is given with the Latin tomentose added to the plant name, thus cerastium tomentosum or popular snow-insummer. Equally, the following botanical Latin additions to plant names are great indicators – look out for them when buying plants. Alba, album, albus meaning white. Ipomoea alba or moonflower. Arachnoides, cobweb like. Sempervivum arachnoideum or cobweb houseleek. Argentea, argentus, meaning silvery. Salvia argentea or silver sage. Caesius meaning bluish/bluegrey. Dianthus caesius or Cheddar Pink. Candicans meaning whitish.

NERJA DONKEY SANCTUARY The Nerja Donkey Sanctuary is scheduled to close its doors at the end of June after it failed to get the licences needed to stay open. The charity could only continue if it changed its location, which would cost close to €10,000. Some of the donkeys are being taken to El Refugio Del Burrito in Antequera, to be cared for, while others are moving to Marbella and Frigliana. There are animals that have not found a new home yet, including a horse named Campeone, four dogs and five cats. The sanctuary needs donations since the staff needs to pay off their outstanding debts. On their website, the sanctuary team thanked the thousands of people that have supported them in the last 10 years. The sanctuary originally opened its doors in June 2004. Since then, they have rescued hundreds of equines. They have also given a safe haven to
countless farmyard animals, including chickens, turkeys, sheep and goats.
VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA WANTS TO SET UP A PRIVATE BRITISH COLLEGE The Mayor’s intention is to auction the use of a plot of municipal land of some 19,800 square metres on which the college will be built. The land is next to the golf course in La Caleta de Vélez and several businessmen have been reported to have shown an interest. PP Mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, said, ‘There are no colleges of these characteristics in the municipality, so those who want to use one are obliged to travel elsewhere. This is a new service, for a different public. We want to position ourselves also in this segment in which we lack to be competitive’. The Mayor also noted jobs would be created and the reach of the college would be all of Axarquía and the east of Málaga, given the nearby connection to the motorway. Now a planning meeting has to approve the land and this will grant an administrative concession for its use, but not the ownership of the land, which remains with the Town Hall.

THE EL VALLE DRAMA GROUP “You’ll never take me alive copper” “Stage props collapsing” and dead bodies crawling off the stage. All this happened at the El Valle drama group’s first production of 2014. Held at the Trapiche Restaurant. This was a Murder, Mystery, Comedy called Murder at Checkmate Manor. Once again the group played both nights to packed houses. The Play was cleverly directed by Steve Heugh. The cast hugely enjoyed themselves acting in this production, and this meant many hours rehearsing to ensure that all went wrong in the right places. The excellent stage set was once again designed and built by John Bezer. We’re sure you will all be delighted to know that the Drama group are already planning the next production which will be Aladdin on November 28th 29th and 30th. We would like to recruit additional people who are willing to take part, either on stage or assisting behind the scenes. Readings and casting will take place on the first Tuesday in September with rehearsals every Tuesday at 4.30 at the Trapiche Restaurant.
