Editors Note... Well that’s another whole school year over with and secondary school looms for our daughter in September, but before that we have 3 months of the summer to enjoy. Although, perhaps ask me in a months time if I am now ready for the kids to go back to school! The summer is an exciting time for us and the children this year. The grandparents are looking after the kids in the UK for 10 days over the summer period to show them the sights of London, improve their English and learn about the country they were born in. Meanwhile, we will take a short break in Spain and continue to explore Cadiz, the area of Spain we love due to the huge expanse of white sandy beaches. Hopefully the family will return fully relaxed to enjoy the rest of the summer together. This month is our property feature and from pages 53 to 63 we have pages of houses for sale to suit all budgets and tastes by reputable agents. Whether it is a permanent base or a holiday home you are looking for, the Axarquia is a great place to buy especially at the moment. However I believe you do need to act fast while the bargains are still around, as property is moving a lot faster in recent months.

THE BRITISH RETAIN THE TOP SPOT AMONGST FOREIGN BUYERS! According to Spanish Property Insight foreign buyers were involved in 11,045 Spanish home sales registered in the Property Register in the first three months of the year, reveals the latest report from the Property Registrars (Registradores). Foreign demand was up 10 per cent compared to the same time last year. This was certainly the case for the Team Group who have seen a wide cross section of buyers entering the market, says Geoff Cheshire “ The strong pound has definitely encouraged Brits to enter the market who might not have done previously. At the moment we are very keen to find new properties of all types to meet buyer demand . As usual, the British were the biggest group with 18 per cent foreign market share, followed by the French with 10 per cent, and Germany on 8 per cent. The ranking of foreign demand by nationality followed a familiar pattern, with the exception of Russian demand, which took a dive thanks to the weak Ruble and other economic problems at home. Russian buyers fell by 37 per cent compared to last year, pushing them from third place to sixth place behind Sweden. British demand, on the other hand, rose yet again, by 29 per cent to 1,956 home purchases registered in Q1. Italian and Chinese demand clocked up bigger percentage increases, but those markets are still small compared to the UK, where demand for homes in Spain is no doubt being encouraged by a stronger Pound. Ada Colau, the antiausterity protester and new mayor-elect of Spain's second city, has said Barcelona needs to limit the number of tourists visiting the city by implementing an entry cap. “If we don’t want to end up like Venice, we will have to put some kind of limit in Barcelona,” Colau, whose Barcelona en Comú Left-wing coalition won the most council seats in last month’s local election, told the newspaper El País in an interview published on Monday. “We can grow more, but I don’t know how much more,”

panish police seized 200 kilos of cocaine found inside hollowed-out pineapples that arrived by ship from Central America, the interior ministry said. The drug-stuffed fruit was found among 10 shipping containers filled with pineapples that arrived in the southern port of Algeciras, one of Europe's largest ports, the ministry said in a statement. "Among the thousands of fresh pineapples inside the containers, they found fruit that had been hollowed out and stuffed with drugs and then covered with a yellow wax that simulated the colour of pineapple pulp," the statement said. The pineapples arrived from an undisclosed country in Central America and were en route to two companies, one based in Madrid and the other in Sant Quirze del Valles near Barcelona.

As well as our regular animal food expenses, our vets bills for the month came in at just under €2000 after providing nine neutering operations, countless vaccinations, microchips and passports, flea treatments, blood tests and sadly, two cases for euthanasia. We were also able to pay for ongoing medication for “Jessie”, newly diagnosed with epilepsy, an operation for “Aizu” who had a nasty growth on his neck and two operations for “Rumba” whose eye was badly damaged and in urgent need of repair. None of this would have been possible without all the wonderful people who shop with us and donate goods to us, to help the animals. Cancer Care Hospice has been amazing. We raised a total of 1,290 euros for this great cause which we presented to Carlos White, Fundraiser and Public Relations officer at the organisation, when we visited the facility on 17 June. Carlos, who had kept in touch with me throughout my camino, kindly found the time to give my partner David and me a tour of the CUDECA Hospice facility at Benalmรกdena. I leaned much about the organisation including the incredible fact that this is the only hospice facility in the whole of Spain, and that they do so much more than care for the terminally ill at the hospice, including paying for five teams of doctors and nurses who operate a far reaching in-home support service for cancer sufferers that covers the whole of Mรกlaga Province. If you would like to catch up on any of my three caminos or read my 'view of life' series about living in this fabulous part of Spain, please take a look at my blog http://www.magwood.me Maggie Woodward

Individualism is wonderful however, no matter how unique we are, by nature we are family people, whether by blood or choice we are wired to be connected to feel loved cherished and valued. Why did we start drinking, smoking, gambling, stuffing etc? What were we wanting? What were we looking for? What did we feel was missing that we needed?
.
CHOOSING OUR POISON Jane Gudge reports.
W
hether gambling, shopping, sex, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, heroin or food it is a condition most frequently resolved and indeed 'cured'. Serious consideration is being given to the idea of addiction being a choice. Interestingly it appears that we opt for a fixation that has serious physical, emotional or a mental downside. We over-eat refined fats, sugars grains and however little the comfort they bring in relation to the physical upset we feel. We do not develop a shopping addiction using cash; that little rush we get from the sound of the credit card accepting the charge, even if we may not be able to actually cover the payment, the risk is part of the hook. We do not become addicted to melon. lettuce or strawberries, or to meditating or practising stillness and no matter how great it makes us feel, regular and
frequent running, swimming or yoga is a great feeling habit not, generally speaking, a health damaging obsession. The drink in the pub, the line of coke at a weekend bash, the joint at a party, although not healthy options do not tend to be addictive in themselves; the addiction depends upon the user. We all experience the feeling of disconnection, loneliness, depression, fear and to encounter a chemical or an internal chemical change that dismisses such feelings, albeit temporarily, can be considered remarkably beneficial. The problem is when this occasional lift develops into a regularity that the physical, psychological, and sociological damage becomes manifestly destructive. The short cut we have taken to improve our emotional and mental state has become a long haul journey with another problem, our occasional state of distress has become a chronic disease.

Whether we feel our nearest and dearest failed to step up to the mark when our habit began to take control does not mean that they and ourselves have not changed The remarkable success of Alcoholics Anonymous and their 12 step programme is practical and supportive and it works. If we want it to, which is key, particularly when we have spent time ensconced in a numbed, distanced condition, protected from usual living by the fog of self deception. Recognising that we opt for and then depend upon support from our chosen stimulant we might realise that it is far more effective to again seek out family and friends for help and encouragement, to reinforce our emotional spiritual social state.

WE REALLY ARE HEALTHIER IN THE SUMMER Serious illnesses strike more in winter because our immune systems are weaker
W
e all feel better after a bit of sunshine - and now scientists may know why. A Cambridge University study has found evidence that we really might be healthier in the summer. Study of the DNA of more than 16,000 people from around the world has shown that our immune systems vary with the seasons. The discovery helps explain why many serious illnesses strike more in the winter – and why people seem healthier in the summer. Heart attacks, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia are all more severe or commonly diagnosed in the winter. Heart attacks are also more likely to fatal. The implications for patients could be ‘profound’, with treatments tailored to the seasons. The researchers showed that almost a quarter of our genes are more active at some times of the year than others. Many of these seasonal genes are involved in the immune system – and in inflammation. Inflammation helps us fight infection but it also fuels a host of illnesses, including many of those that are worse in winter. Seasonal differences in immune system
32 The Grapevine
genes were found in populations from around the world. But, crucially, the patterns reversed in different hemispheres, with genes that were highly active in Australia in the summer, busiest in the UK in the winter and vice versa. It isn’t known exactly how the body knows to switch from summer to winter mode but it is thought that the amount of daylight plays a role. This could explain why the seasonal effect was weaker in people from Iceland, where the extremely long summer days and short, dark winter days may upset the process. Researcher Professor John Todd described the finding as ‘really surprising and serendipitous’. He added: ‘In some ways, it’s obvious – it helps explain why so many diseases, from heart disease to mental illness, are much worse in the winter months. But no one had appreciated the extent to which this has actually occurred. ‘The implications for how we treat disease, and even how we plan our research, could be profound.’ Professor Todd said that given results, a winter holiday in the sun could also be good for us. He said: ‘Many people emigrate to warmer places and anecdotally they feel healthier. ‘If we could move my lab from Cambridge to Tenerife in the
winter, it would be a great way of finding out how the immune system changes and how people feel.’ He advises those that can’t afford some winter sun to exercise, eats well and keep warm, in a bid to keep levels of inflammation low. Professor Mike Turner, of the Wellcome Trust, which co-funded the study, said it provides ‘real evidence supporting the popular belief that we tend to be healthier in the summer’. He added: ‘Although we are still unclear of the mechanism that governs this variation, one possible outcome is that treatment for certain diseases could be more effective if tailored to the seasons.’ Karen Addington, of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which also provided funding, said: ‘While we all love winter sun, flying south for the whole of each winter isn’t something anyone can practically recommend as a way of preventing type 1 diabetes.‘But this new insight does open new avenues of research that could help untangle the complex web of genetic and environmental factors behind a diagnosis.’ The study is reported in the journal Nature Communications

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

Later, the Arabs continued perfecting the technique of olive oil production. The importance of the Arab influence is evident by the fact that the Spanish word for oil - aceite - comes from the Arabic - al-zat-, or olive juice. As a result of a stable, thousandyear-old tradition, today Spain is the major producer and exporter of olive oil in the world. Nevertheless, until a few years ago, Spanish olive oil was relatively unknown since almost all of it was sold by bulk and packaged outside the country. Today, gradually, oil producers, and especially those of the best quality oil, are packaging and placing their own names on the bottles, just as the producers of California wine are now selling more and more of their wine as their own product instead of selling the grapes. This is increasing considerably the knowledge and admiration for Spanish olive oil as an exceptional product.
OLIVE OIL HISTORY Olive oil have deep roots in the history of Spain
T
he cultivation of olives and the production of olive oil have deep roots in the history of Spain. The olive, a symbol of peace, and the tree which produces olives (olea europea) are known to have been cultivated around the Mediterranean about 6000 years ago. Its origin could be the eastern Mediterranean, but most probably it originated in Greece. Stone tablets found dating back to 2500 BC from the court of King

Minos of Crete make reference to this plant. The olive tree was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians and the Greeks. Olive cultivation was expanded considerably by the Romans, who also improved the techniques of oil production. Olive oil from Hispania was highly regarded by the inhabitants of Old Rome, as well as by the rest of the Roman Empire, that considered it of superior quality.
Finally, the benefits of olive oil should be mentioned: through its oleic acid, it helps to reduce the level of bad cholesterol and increase the level of good cholesterol, it has a high contribution of Vitamin E, which prevents arteriosclerosis, and helps to reduce blood pressure, thereby helping to prevent thrombosis.

The 2015 Propert y Feature 2015 SET TO SEE STRONG GROWTH IN DEMAND FOR PRIME PROPERTIES IN SPAIN The international financial markets are expected to be a key driver in the uptake of Spanish prime residential propert y during 2015, according to a new analysis. The latest market reports from Lucas Fox International Properties, suggest there has been an increase in demand from UK, US and Swiss buyers thanks to the rise of the dollar, pound and Swiss franc against the Euro. Conversely, the number of Russian investors is expected to dwindle as the rouble goes further into free fall in 2015. ‘With unemployment falling, the economy growing faster than predicted and propert y reaching the bottom, 2015 is set to be a pivotal year for Spain's propert y market. Prices are on average 40% below what they were since the start of the crisis in 2007 and we predict a slow and steady recover y. To advertise call 637 028 873

DECLARACIÓN DE ASIMILADO A FUERA DE ORDENACIÓN (DAFO) A New Law for House Sellers - Information Collated by Sunset Properties
T
he Junta de Andalucía has introduced a new law requiring sellers of property situated on rustic land (any land that is not within the urban boundary) to obtain a certificate from their local Town Hall known as a Declaración de Asimilado a Fuera de Ordenación (DAFO). The DAFO certificate clarifies the situation of the property and confirms that there are no problems relating to the house or the land. All property sales of houses on rustic land and updates of Escritura descriptions will need this certificate. For sales it will be needed prior to completion. As the DAFO can take a little time to obtain it is advisable to start the application process before the house is offered for sale. Sellers need to apply for the certificate at their local Town Hall either in person or through a lawyer or asesoría. For houses already on the market, the application process needs to be started as soon as possible. Alternatively the process can be started once a buyer has been found however this may delay completion of the sale quite significantly and the speed with which certificates are
60 The Grapevine
issued depends on the area in which the seller lives. The first step involves employing an architect to visit the property to:
• Produce comprehensive plans of the property.
• Confirm that the property is habitable with a functioning bathroom and kitchen.
• Confirm that the property has legal electricity and water connections.
• Confirm that the property has proper waste disposal for sewage - a septic tank not a ‘black hole’ or ‘pozo negro’. This information is then submitted to the Town Hall along with documents including a copy of the Escritura, Catastro plans, latest IBI bill (paid) and NIE certificates. In order to issue the DAFO certificate the Town Hall will check their records to ensure that:
• Proper planning permission has been granted for everything in situ.
• There are no sanctions against the property or files open investigating issues relating to the property.
In addition the Town Hall Architect will visit the property to ensure that all of the above requirements have been met. This law also applies to description updates so if anything has been added to the property such as a pool, bedroom, dining room, bathroom, storage room or garage then the DAFO certificate is required. Any additions need to have been in situ for more than 6 years and if planning permission was not obtained at the time of building then the Town Hall will charge the cost of a building licence. Each Town Hall has its own system of charges which can vary considerably so the cost of the certificate will be determined by where the property is located. Every property is different and as such it is difficult to estimate the total cost of obtaining the DAFO certificate as it will depend on the circumstances and location of the property. This information has been produced by Sunset Properties Spain in consultation with Asesoría Axarquía (Torre del Mar) and Cómpeta Town Hall. Please consult your lawyer, asesoría or local town hall for further advice and information.

YOU CAN’T SAY THAT IN ENGLISH! 8 untranslatable words
B
y some estimates the English language has more than a million words. It’s impossible to nail down an exact figure, but it’s generally agreed that no other language has nearly as many. It’s not like any of us use all one million words, but still – you would think that English must have a word for everything, right? No way. Not even close. There are over 6,000 languages spoken on Earth, and all of them describe the breadth and depth of human life. But since all of these languages provide slightly different ways of seeing the world, no one language can perfectly encapsulate the entire human experience. Conversely, every language on Earth contains certain words that don’t exist in any other language. These linguistic gems can certainly be defined, but they cannot be directly translated. For example, can you think of just one word to mean the essence of yourself that you put into your work? You might say that you “put your heart and soul” into something, but the Greeks simply call this kind of passion for what you do ìe???? (meraki). abbiocco (Italian) noun: that sleepy feeling you get after a big meal Everyone has succumbed to drowsiness after a meal at one time or another, but only the Italians
66 The Grapevine
have enshrined the phenomenon in a single word. When you wish you could take a nap after lunch, you’re “having the abbiocco” (avere l’abbiocco). desenrascanço (Portuguese) noun: the ability to improvise a quick solution Desenrascanço is the M.O. of any high-functioning procrastinator. Not only does it mean to solve a problem or complete a task, it means doing so with a completely improvised solution. TV’s MacGyver utilized this skill every time he averted disaster with nothing but a bent paper clip and a chewing gum wrapper. hyggelig (Danish) adj: comfy, cozy; intimate; contented Do you ever wish there was one word to combine everything snuggly, safe, friendly and caring? The Danes have you covered with hyggelig. The word is used so often in daily life that many Danes consider it part of the national character. sobremesa (Spanish) noun: after-lunch conversation around the table The Spanish are known for enjoying long meals together, but eating isn’t just about food. When you stay at the table after lunch in order to savor a final course of stimulating conversation, you are indulging in sobremesa.
utepils (Norwegian) noun: a beer you drink outside Norwegians must endure a long, dark winter before they can enjoy the brilliant, but brief, summer. So a beer that you can drink outside, while absorbing the sun’s glorious rays, is not just any old beer. verschlimmbessern (German) verb: to make something worse when trying to improve it We’ve all done this before: by trying to fix a small problem we create a bigger problem. Perhaps you tried to repair a flat tire on your bike, and now the wheel won’t turn? Or after reinstalling Windows your laptop freezes every time you boot up? Oh no, don’t tell me you tried to fix that bad haircut yourself! yakamoz (Turkish) and mångata (Swedish) noun: the reflection of moonlight on water No matter which language you speak, from time to time you probably admire the moon’s reflection on a body of water. But unless you’re Turkish or Swedish it’s impossible to describe this beauty with a single word. The Swedish mångata literally translates to “moon-road”, an aptly poetic description. Turkish also has a very specific word, gümüþservi, but it’s not really used in everyday speech. It’s far more common to call the moon’s reflection on water yakamoz, which can be used to describe any kind of light reflecting on water, or even the sparkle of fish.

My wife has left me because I am a compulsive gambler. I'd do anything to win her back.
An eccentric philosophy professor gave a one question final exam after a semester dealing with a broad array of topics. The class was already seated and ready to go when the professor picked up his chair, plopped it on his desk and wrote on the board: "Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist."
I phoned the wife from work.

"Do you ever get a shooting pain across your body, like someone's got a voodoo doll of you, and they're stabbing it?" I asked her.
After two minutes she said she was dropping the charge due to lack of evidence.
"No?" she replied, sounding puzzled. "How about now ...?

"Good evening, I'm sure you're all wondering why you're here," said the short-term memory loss counsellor. A bloke took some shelves down in a shop today and battered me with them. So I ripped up a huge shop fitting and killed him with it
Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled in furious fashion. Some students wrote over 30 pages in one hour attempting to refute the existence of the chair. One member of the class however, was up and finished in less than a minute. Weeks later when the grades were posted, the rest of the group wondered how he could have got an A when he had barely written anything at all. His answer consisted of two words: "What chair?"
It was a massive counter attack.

GOING BANANAS! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.
T
he cultivation of bananas began in South East Asia in around 500BC. From there they were taken to Africa, via Madagascar, and, during the 6th century became established along the Mediterranean coastline. They reached the Canary Isles from Guinea, via the Portuguese, and it is believed that the Spanish took the banana to America. The Canary banana varies in looks and taste from the common banana we would more commonly see in the rest of Europe and yet its origins are very similar. Both are varieties of the Cavendish – by far the most cultivated in the world – and the main differences are in growing and ripening techniques linked to consumer markets. The weather in the Canary Islands is not tropical and
84 The Grapevine
it can be variable. This means that the banana spends longer on the ´tree´- up to 6 months compared with the typical 3 months on a tropical plantation. This gives the Canary banana a higher level of ripeness, flavour and aroma. It has a higher moisture content, making it tastier that its more floury counterpart and it has higher potassium levels. Canarian bananas are picked just 2 weeks before optimum ripeness compared to a month or more for central American crops; thus the flavour will always be better and the reduced carbon footprint has meant that the Canarian crop is now finding increased markets within Europe. The banana crop in the Canary Islands is a very important product representing 33% of the agricultural industry. Each year
400 million kilos of bananas are grown providing direct or indirect employment for around 30,000 people. 80% of the banana plantations there are operated by small producers with one hectare, or less, of land. This is in direct competition to the big guys of Central America – companies such as Chiquita/Fyffes, the largest, Dole and Del Monte – who account for more than half of the world´s exports which total some 105 million tonnes annually. There are believed to be some one thousand varieties of bananas in the world, including plantains, but 95% of banana exports are from one single variety – the Cavendish. The main reason for this is that the Cavendish stores supremely well; it can survive weeks in a

ship´s hold. The fruits are also very uniform, roughly the same shape and size, making shipping and processing very simple. All of this makes the banana the most valuable fruit in the world. This standardisation leads, of course, to a mono-crop of immense numbers and, with that, the dangers of crop annihilation from disease/insect attack. To counter the risks, Central American growers use huge amounts of fungicides and insecticides on their banana crops; the European Community controls are stricter so amounts of chemicals that can be used are limited. So next time you shop for bananas, buy local produce or – better still – why not grow your own! Musa x paradisiaca, or banana, is actually a perennial herb that belongs to the same family as strelitzias and gingers. Their ideal growing conditions are around 25C – 30C with a preferred altitude below 400m, hence they are a perfect coastal crop. They like good light, sandy ground which drains well and, in summer, plenty of water and organic fertiliser. However, they will grow well as long as there are no vast extremes of temperatures – excess heat of over 40C and excess cold below -5C. Winter temperatures below 12C will stop active growth, as in citrus, and in really cold conditions, the top growth can be killed to the ground but favourable conditions will soon bring new basal shoots. They do not like cold winds, so provide protection. Commercially they are planted in blocks or clumps, not single rows and the most productive are always those on the inside of the clump. If you do not have space for this, do give them the protection of a wall or other trees/plantings. The roots are weak and are nearly all concentrated in the top 40 cm of soil, though some may reach a maximum depth of 1.5m with a In

spread of 3m. The ´trunks´ consist of leaf stalks wrapped around each other – the new leaves start growing inside, below the ground, and they push up through the middle emerging from the centre of the crown – large lush and very tropical looking – reaching a length of up to 4m metres in ideal conditions and up to 1.5m wide. In good conditions, the large purple coloured flower will develop around 1 year after planting. As the petals curl back and drop off, they reveal tiny bananas, up to 20 individual fruits known as fingers, with the collective bunch called a hand. One plant will generally carry no more than 4 hands. Male fingers just shrivel and drop off; it is the females that develop into bananas, being ready to pick some 80 days later. They are ready to be picked when they look well rounded and the remains of the flower at the end dry up and drop off. After the plant is finished flowering and fruiting, it will die and one of the young plants forming at the base will develop into the next crop. If you have a surplus of young plants, they can be carefully cut away and replanted to increase your plantation. Bananas are good for your heart and nerves. They contain a high dose of potassium – an essential ingredient to keep your heart and nervous system in good shape and reduce stroke risk. Bananas help depression due to the high level of amino acids which help to boost our mood and happiness. Bananas are good for your blood. DAY FOR LIFE - APRIL 2015 Thank you to everyone who
supported our "Day for Life 2015" in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care. I am delighted to advise that as a result of all the activities on the day including the Walk for Life, the sponsored plank and the earlier Zumbathon, an amazing total of 4860 euros was raised. Again, thank you to everyone who contributed in whatever way; walking, sponsoring a walker, donating a raffle prize, baking a cake, volunteering as a helper on the day and turning up on the day. All this support ensures Cudeca continues adding life to days through their Special Kind of Caring to over 1000 patients during 2014. Thank you Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer - Competa.
CUDECA HOSPICE During the Month of April and May, Maggie Woodward undertook an extraordinary task of walking more than 1400 kms from Malaga to Santiago de Compostela donating the sponsorship funds raised to Cudeca Hospice that reached 1240€. We had the pleasure of the company of Maggie and her partner David Wolfe al Cudeca Hospice in Benalmadena as we thanked them for their continual support to Cudeca.
