pain‘s new cabinet has the highest number of female ministers in the country’s history, with 11 women taking up places in prime minister Pedro Sanchez's new government.The Socialist-led government was sworn in by King Felipe VI marking one of the fastest power transitions in Spain’s four decades of democratic rule. The cabinet also includes six men. One, Pedro Duque, is a former astronaut. He was appointed science minister. Most of the new ministers referred to the female majority in their oath-taking. Women now hold some of the most important jobs in Spain including overseeing finance, the economy, defence and education. Mr Sánchez’s minority government came to power after a court ruling over a kickbacks-for-contracts scheme involving the conservative Popular Party prompted a "no confidence" vote against Mariano Rajoy, who had been prime minister since 2011. Mr Sánchez has described his government as feminist, progressive, pro-European and “a loyal reflection of the best in the society that it aspires to serve.” Carmen Calvo, an expert in constitutional law and former culture minister, will be Mr Sanchez’s deputy prime minister and also in charge of the resurrected Ministry of Equality. The Beach Lounge has a fabulous terrace, lit beautifully at night with relaxed seating areas to enjoy a drink during the day or night in Torre del Mar. Alex explained that they couldn't find a nice place on the coast that had truly comfortable seating, nice decor, ambience, whilst being provided with impeccable service, and quality products, so instead of looking any more they created this lovely cocktail bar themselves.

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ A Summer of Music with Food and Wine

magine your favourite film music – or other much-loved classics - being played on a summer's evening here in Malaga. As the heat of the day fades slowly away, you listen. The music is wonderful; it's rousing your emotions, before floating away down the sunset valley. But there is more than that: the sheer joy of watching live performance, seeing the skill and the intense feeling good musicians express. Now imagine experiencing this with a glass good wine in your hand! Bodegas Bentomiz, the winery just above Sayalonga has some summer treats for us all. The first, on Sunday the 8th of June is a live performance by Sevillana group QuartzTeto. These four musicians are committed to the sensitivity and purity of classical music. Their name is inspired by the beauty, solidity and transparency of quartz as reflecting that purity. But they express it with a restless energy that brings to life much-loved music from the best-known great composers: Mozart, Brahms, Vivaldi and others. They've even

been known to touch on modern forms – Argentinian Tango, Flamenco & Jazz - within a context of classical purity, bringing an unexpected element – along with their sense of fun! They will be performing in one of the most beautiful locations within Málaga, between the mountains and the sea. Bodegas Bentomiz is located just above the main road between Sayalonga and Cómpeta. Their stylish modern building is clad in slate and looks out across the valley, all the way from the mountains to the sea. A stage is built on the forecourt between this building and the vineyard, so visitors enjoy an open-air concert. Drinks – including the bodegas's own Ariyanas wines, and freshly made gourmet tapas will be available from the bar. Indeed you can enjoy them from six o'clock until the start of the music at eight, and again in the interval. There are vegetarian and vegan tapas options, as well as hot and cold, meat and fish – something for everyone. If you can't make QuartzTeto don't worry, there's more. At the very end of July the bodega will welcome Sergio Aranda bailaor de

flamenco. Sergio is brother to Marina Aranda, who performed here last year, and he is recognised as an exceptional dancer in his own right. He has performed all over the world, but loves to perform at home most of all - so this event, in the heart of the Axarquía, will be perfect for him … and for us. And there is still a piano extravaganza to come! The last Sunday in August sees Thomas Kaurich return to the bodega. Because Thomas is a Steinwayregistered artist the company are willing to loan a Steinway Grand, brought in all the way from Granada and up the little track to be set up in the shade of the pines so the hot sun can't hurt it! This year Thomas promises a program that will show all the passion and virtuosity of the great romantic composers, from Bach to Beethoven; from Chopin to Liszt. Every one of these wonderful events will offer visitors a unique experience of music, along with delicious food and wine in a gorgeous setting. Another alternative is if you have to go to the hospital for the night to sit with a loved one this maybe the answer, and then after spending the night on a chair, the 8.30am back would be good for a refresh! And now for the 8.30am bus from Torre and leaves Algarrobo Costa (Lidl) at 8.35am. These buses are very good for the tourists that wish to visit all three of the villages. Sayalonga, Competa and Canillas It gets to all the villages for either a full day of visiting or walking, either returning on the 1.30, 3.45 or the 5.30. Prior to the new routes, it was a bit of a visiting

rush to catch the 12.30 from Torre and return on the 3.30 from Canillas and then to find the only shop open in Siesta was Dia!

Before this the residents without transport in Sayalonga were out on a limb, so to speak, regarding these activities.

Sayalonga residents could get the earlier bus which reaches their village at 8.55 and come to Competa for the banks and if quick enough catch the 9.45 back from Competa. Or visit the new dentist we now have on Calle San Antonio, do a supermarket shop in all the 4 supermarkets, chill out in the various bars, or walk to Canillas.

Another of my musings is if you have a night out on the tiles, in Torre, the early bus an advantage for your walk of shame to go unnoticed!

Also in Competa there are various Yoga classes, Zumba twice a week, swimming in the indoor pool and a new gym. Canillas has Pilates. The Tourist Office has some information, which is situated by the bus stop in Competa. All this excitement just with the advent of three new bus times!

These are just my silly musings to alert the Grapevine readers to the new bus timetable! This has got to be good for the economy of the villages, but it's not been widely publicised. Hopefully it is now. Please note the new buses are no good for Malaga shopping or the Airport.

write this as I have just got back from a fabulous lunch at The Plaza Lounge Bar in Benamargosa. It was a hot sunny day and after a mornings bike riding a Sunday lunch was exactly what we needed to recharge the batteries.

After a short while we were called to pick up warm plates and to help ourselves to the Sunday Lunch. My family chose to have the pork which was freshly cut as we passed by with our plates, also available was beef and roast chicken. I am vegetarian so the cauliflower cheese with mushrooms was fantastic to have available alongside the other vegetables and potatoes. We couldn’t have wished for a bigger choice to go with the meat selection. There was Yorkshire puddings, wonderfully crispy roast potatoes, beautifully glazed carrots, peas and beans, butternut squash, homemade gravy along with the availability of traditional accompaniments such as mustard, apple sauce and horseradish. The whole meal was fabulous, beautifully cooked and we were spoilt for choice. To be honest the Sunday Lunch beat me and I could not fit another thing in however the kids had spied the desserts. Despite looking like they were going to pop they ordered an ice cream and one of Audrey’s homemade desserts the Chocolate and Baileys Mud pie. I know I had said I was beat well the Chocolate and Baileys Mud pie came and I just couldn’t resist it, it look so tempting! I asked for another spoon much to my daughters dismay and I dug in. It was seriously delicious I would thoroughly recommend it; in fact I would go to Benamagosa just to have that desert! We had a great time at The Plaza Lounge restaurant. Audrey is a tremendous cook, her husband and their staff served us impeccably I would definitely recommend a visit. Due to the heat they will be delaying the Sunday Lunch times to 4.30pm over the summer but remember to book to avoid disappointment. See adverts on pages 80 & 81

ith the Summer Solstice beckoning as I write and temperatures soaring at last, irrigation, once again, becomes the topic of the day. We've noticed from talking to a lot of you at Viveros Florena that water – or lack of it – is becoming a really important issue and, even if your supply is reliable, no-one wants to waste it. Many holiday home owners especially don´t want big water bills but they do want a garden that looks attractive, especially if they are letting. The answer is, of course, to use native and Mediterranean-style plants and cacti and succulents. These are all perfectly happy in our generally alkaline, rocky or sandy and nutrient-poor soil. At the garden centre, we have always

concentrated heavily on Mediterranean style plantings and we have now set up a dedicated cactus/succulent corner which we hope will give you further inspiration for tough plantings. These desert type plants have adapted to the extremes of heat and aridity often by changing their physical structure; they are called xerophytes. They usually have special means of storing water and often have few or no leaves to reduce transpiration. Some are also phreatophytes – plants which adapt to arid environments by growing extremely long roots to seek out water. Cacti are xerophytes adapted from the rose family and they are some of our most drought-resistant plants. They rarely have leaves, they have wide-spreading radial root systems which allow them to take

up large quantities of rainwater or condensation; they store water in their stems, have spines to create shade and protect themselves from grazing animals and they are often coated in a wax or woolly covering to reflect sunlight and seal in water. The ribs of the golden barrel cactus, echinocactus grusonii, or motherin-law's cushion, for instance, expand and contract like an accordion as water is pumped into its body during a rainstorm. Desert or near-desert conditions are not as bleak as you may imagine, uniformly hot, dry and arid; just as each desert has its own characteristics, so they also have tiny micro-climates and enclaves where different species thrive. When desert soils are closely examined, each fistful can contain dozens of seeds of

perennial and annual or ephemeral seeds. Believe it or not, the world record for this vast desert seed bank is in the Sonoran Desert, U.S.A. where 200,000 seeds have been counted per square metre. Desert perennials will survive by remaining dormant during dry periods; annuals, more correctly in this case described as ephemerals, germinate after heavy seasonal rain, bloom prodigiously giving us an explosion of colour, and scatter their seeds within a very short time. These seeds remain dormant in the soil until the following year's cycle but, if rains are scant, the seeds can wait for another year or two. There are hundreds of species of these ephemerals to bring short-term colour. Gardening more naturally means that we imitate nature more closely using plants that will adapt to the limitations. And desert-style gardens can look stunning; you can even incorporate an arroyo or dry steam bed lined with river rocks and gravel and plants alongside, just as in nature. Whilst some cacti and succulents may seem expensive to buy initially, remember that they can represent years of growth and you certainly need less of them than in lusher styles of gardening. Many will quietly reproduce to help you build up stocks and extend your planting scheme. Agaves and aloes are some of the easiest succulents to buy when first setting up your garden. There are around 200 species of agaves and some 450 of aloes. Agaves nearly all die when they flower whereas aloes don´t. But some agaves can take decades to flower and will always reproduce in some way before death so that you have new supplies. So when your mother

plant starts to send up a flower shoot, signalling that it is near the end of its life, don´t feel too sad – there's all the excitement of a new birth to come, multiple births in fact! Most agaves, from the Greek agauos meaning illustrious or noble, consist of rosettes of thick, rigid but succulent leaves often toothed along the margins and usually with a lethally sharp terminal spike. They come in many leaf colours, lots being striped, and range from just a few centimetres tall to 2.5m high. Aloes, from the Greek alsos meaning bitter, again range from a few centimetres tall to towering tree aloes, perhaps 15m tall. They flower in clusters of yellow, orange or red tubular flowers and, once they reach flowering size, will then do so annually for many years. If you're looking for something more columnar, the cereus family way suit you. They are best known for their stunningly beautiful night-time flowering but they are also very statuesque plantings and give stature to desert scenes. The crassulaceae family is huge and contains many of our favourite succulents; echeveria, sempervivum, kalanchoe, aeonium and sedum to name just a few. Echeverias are some of the easiest and considered by many to be the most beautiful. They are natives of Mexico and Central America forming attractive rosettes of fleshy leaves resembling fullblown roses or ruffled lettuces in a great range of colours. From the diverse euphorbia family comes the

prickly and floriferous Crown of Thorns, euphorbia milii. And, if prickles are your thing, go for the opuntia family (our beleaguered prickly pear is just one). And remember that cacti make up one of our most beleaguered and under threat plant groups – so let's hold out a hand to them, as long as they're not too prickly! ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH While writing this article, I am acutely aware that in England the weather is stormy, with gale warnings and the possibility of flooding, and here we are starting to enjoy the southern Spanish summer. It's time to break out the sunshades, beach towels and for some, the bikinis. At the Nerja branch it is time to take a break too and so our last lunch of the season on 30th June was â&#x20AC;&#x153;Armed Forces Dayâ&#x20AC;? It was special one. We had the company of Major Del Hamilton and Warrant Officer Mike Woolley who brought us up to speed with all that was happening at the PRC (Personnel Recovery Centre)in Edinburgh.
