Editors Note... Summer is most definitely here, no school for the kids and more beach days for the family. Maybe we will be able to take some time off to go and enjoy the fabulous beaches in the Cadiz province and area which we love to holiday in. July is also Feria time! In the village of Competa the feria starts on the evening of Thursday 25th July with a firework display. When this ends it marks the start of the feria and the fairground rides are open to all. Saturday is my favourite day with the foam party in the Plaza Almijara. If events are the same as past years a water slide from the Plaza is erected and is the length of La Rampa the steep road by the Town Hall. This is excellent fun. The feria ends on the Monday evening which is a local bank holiday. All throughout the weekend there is live music playing in a couple of locations to suit both older and younger tastes. The music is loud and it seems the village doesn’t sleep for 4 nights!

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

S

panish police have arrested 25 members of the group for drug trafficking in a sweeping operation between El Puerto de Santa María and Estepona. The group may have been living the high life, but they were just intermediaries, according to police. They got cocaine from the big mafia groups and distributed it among smaller organizations, which then sold it to customers on the street. Police estimate that they sold up to 20 kilos of cocaine a week, around more than a ton a year. The money from the business allowed the members a life of unrivaled luxury but it also drew the attention of the police, who are investigating them for money laundering. Police sources say an investigation into the “multiple possessions” of the 25 arrested members is ongoing.

They created a Twitter and Instagram account, @ESO_Detectives, and started their hunt for grammatically incorrect social media posts coming from celebrity accounts. As their presence has grown (the Twitter account currently boasts almost 9,000 followers), so has the number of responses from their targets. The 14- and 15-year-olds, of the institute IES Cuatro Villas de Berlanga, were encouraged in the endeavour by their geography teacher Alejandro Galán. He aimed to encourage his students to improve their grammar and spelling with one of their most timeconsuming after-school activities: social media.

schedules or notices about upcoming religious events. The priest, Xosé Manuel Lence, was sick and tired of hearing cellphones ringing inside the church, and it seems that he has found the perfect way to put a stop to it – while at the same time illuminating churchgoers on their relationship with the Lord. “When you enter this church, it is possible that you will hear the ‘call of God,’ but it is highly unlikely that he will call you on your cellphone today,” reads the message, written in the Galician language. “Thank you for turning off your phone.” There is an additional note of irony in the final message, which alludes to one of the leading causes of road accidents: “If you want to TALK to God, come inside, choose a quiet spot, and speak to him. If you want to SEE God, send him a WhatsApp while you’re driving.” The humorous advice immediately caught the attention of local residents, and from there it spread on social media.

Reyes, who over a long career played for both Real and Atlético Madrid, Arsenal and his home team of Sevilla, was clearly well-loved. In the car with Reyes was his cousin Jonathan, who also died in the accident, while the third person in the player's Mercedes Brabus was another of his cousins, Juan Manuel Calderón, who remains in a serious condition in hospital. advantages and allowances applicable to tax residents in Spain (i.e. no inheritance taxes between spouses on the main home). 4. Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the income tax applicable to non-resident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210).

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Time to Formally Become a Tax Resident In Spain

A

ccording to the Spanish Law all individuals who are living in Spain for more than 183 days a year are tax residents in Spain and have to pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income. Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (for more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit annual tax returns out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse, A Tax return should be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain. Up to date, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities are aware of this important group of people. The situation changed, due to the financial crisis, and the Spanish Government intends to tighten up its control of all foreigners living in Spain to ensure that they pay taxes in Spain where due, and thus avoid thousands of

16 The Grapevine

people receiving free health services without paying taxes and without having the legal right to get them. The Spanish Government decided to be stricter with the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish health cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall (called “Empadronamiento) in order to get treatment. Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2018, This should be done during the months of May and June 2019. There are many good reasons for doing this. It will enable foreign residents to: 1 Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable. 2 Avoid the 3 % withholding tax when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain. 3. Benefit from the inheritance tax

It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points. CONCLUSION: If you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days a year) we would recommend that you submit an annual income tax return during the months of May and June for the tax year 2018. By doing this, you will confirm to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing legally in Spain and duly paying their taxes here. For further advice on this matter or to arrange a no obligation meeting to discuss your particular circumstances in detail, please contact us Jose M. Lopez-Avalos Tel. (00 34) 952 901 225 Fax.(00 34) 952 901 226 www.marbellasolicitors.com Axarquia Solicitors would like to apologise for the incorrect version submitted last month.

swimming in the crystal clear waters under the waterfalls. Other guests prefer a more leisurely pace from Caleta to take in the coastal scenery whilst enjoying the relaxation of being on a boat and soaking up the sun. Many guests make their way from Nerja to La Caleta Marina and prefer to be dropped off at Burriana Beach instead of returning back to Caleta. Costa Boat Trip are more than happy to offer a bespoke service to any of their guests. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

COSTA BOAT TRIPS

They are a real pleasure to spend time with and they clearly enjoy what they do and gain great pleasure out of sailing and entertaining on their luxury power boat.

A Fabulous Day Out From Caleta Marina On A Power Boat

T

his month I was invited by the owners of Costa Boat Trips in Caleta de Velez to enjoy a beautiful day out on a comfortable, modern, technically superior and safe Italian power boat. Well what else could I say, but I would love too! Also on the guest list was Helen from a well-established and reputable B&B in Competa, Villa Andalucía and Tony and Tracy from Catering Company Amigos Cocina. Cost Boat Trips are teaming up with Tony and Tracy to provide a gourmet food offering on their excursions, a step up from the excellent picnic they already provide and I got to try both which was really fabulous! Ordinarily you hire the boat for the excursion and time length of your choice. Their Boat trips aren’t mixed with other groups; they are private to your party and can cater up to 8 people plus their 2 crew. This is a niche service designed for you to relax exclusively with

18 The Grapevine

family and friends of your choice away from the crowd. The most popular trips are the 3 or 4 hour boat trips to Maro Waterfalls leaving from La Caleta Marina and sailing along the Axarquia coast via Torrox, Balcony of Europe, Nerja, Burriana Beach and on to Maro Cerro Gordo pristine marine park. A trip not to be missed. .

Complimentary soft drinks along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, lots of nibbles, freshly made sandwiches with new baked wonderful Dutch bread rolls, & fresh large towels are all included in the price of the boat hire. As they were keen to point out that there aim is to have fun on board their amazing power boat. They are not time watchers, very generous over extra time and they listen to what their customers would like or want to do. For example some guests want a fast ride to the Maro Waterfalls in order to spend lots of time off and on the boat, snorkelling and

As they are also avid Scuba Divers they chose to move and set up the business in Torre Del Mar. They chose this area to settle in as they felt the coastline had the best waters for diving. It was also two years ago they bought the boat and the business got started. I thoroughly enjoyed my time I spent on the boat with them. The boat is new, spacious and extremely comfortable and the whole trip was relaxing with a plentiful supply of drink and wonderful food. They are great hosts and their boat is a fabulous way to explore, relax and spend time with your family and friends in peace and quiet away from the crowds. They are offering special trips over the Torre Del Mar Air show weekend so please contact them about prices and times and of course treat yourself to the extra gourmet picnic, it’s worth it! LA CASA BELLA

From Sourcing a Particular Item to Full Interior Design.

I

n 2005 we started out in our shop in Cรณmpeta supplying Moroccan furnishings, accessories and gifts. We soon realised that Moorish decor worked surprising well with clean-lined modern furniture and began to look for suppliers of varying styles from different countries. Via both our website and shop in Cรณmpeta we now offer a wide range of fabulous decor from the rustic to the contemporary to furnish not only your home and terrace but to add finishing touches to every nook and cranny. The shop and the website can best be supplied as the same flavour. On the website we need continuity, we have thousands of products sourced from many far flung places. As we import to fulfil customer orders we fill up the loads with different goodies that then make their way into the shop. Or if my husband isn't on the ball into our home! In the shop we keep things changing so that there is always a reason to visit. Our displays always include, Moroccan decor, solid wooden contemporary, classic and ethnic

furniture, lights, lanterns, cushions, rugs and throws We currently have around 180m of showrooms spread over 6 rooms rammed from ceiling to floor with beautiful decor in different styles. Through both the shop and the website we offer a variety of services. From sourcing a particular item to full interior design. Starting with Sourcing. Mostly what that means, is "Can you find me something like this?" The answer is, we visit as many trade shows as we can every year and through the last 14 years have made a diverse range of contacts. We have worked with many of our agents and suppliers for more than a decade, some are as new to us as this month. Through this constantly expanding network we can source almost anything, bespoke, ethnic or contemporary items from our selection of European and Asian suppliers, Customers quite often pop in with a picture or email us a Pinterest board and ask us to find a certain something. Then the hunt begins.

are great for new homes or sprucing up existing ones. The furniture sets are simply products from our best selling ranges grouped together to offer you the key pieces for a room at a discount. With the key bits taken care of you can focus on accessorising. Furniture Packages include everything from furniture and furnishings to bedding and knives and forks. If you have a busy life and just don't have the time to focus on furnishing your home we have put together a number of packages once again based on our best selling lines. All you need to do is choose a style and a colour scheme. Each package ends up being slightly different and we're quite happy to tweak it to suit your individual tastes. Our bespoke furniture packages are entirely designed around you. To most people the term "Interior design" is a bit scary and belongs in penthouse apartments and pages of glossy magazines. Actually at Interior Design School they teach you a lot of practical stuff and often this is the advice that customers really need. Our service can be exactly what you want it to be whether you have a whole plot or an individual room we'll work with you. You can have as much or a little input as you like. If budget isn't an issue we will create you a spectacular home with no expense spared. However creating a stunning home doesn't need to be expensive or daunting. For more information send us an email with an overview of your requirements and we'll get back to you with some initial ideas. It doesn't cost a cent unless you decide to buy. See our website for more information about our approach to design, to browse our galleries, for project overviews and customer testimonials or have a look at beautiful decor.

AXARFUSION

Celebrate Their 1st Anniversary

T

his month I met Dani Hill the CEO and owner of Axarfusion. The company is celebrating its first anniversary and would like to update you on how the last year has gone, present offers and future projects. Axarfusion is your local Internet service provider for Competa; the surrounding villages and countryside. Dani is an extremely professional, intelligent young man who has grown up in Competa, he is fluent in English and Spanish and is fully integrated into the local community. The business opened to the public in June last year after presenting the initial project to the town hall in August 2017. His dedication and successful business are a credit to him. Axarfusion provides an excellent service, including fibre Optic internet within the village of Competa, high speed WIFI internet connections for the countryside; and competitively priced fixed line and mobile telephones services. Axarfusion pride themselves on their aftercare services. This is very important as Dani explains, he has lived for much of his life in Competa and has known many of his customers for most of his life. Happy customers will always pass on recommendations; after all word of mouth is the best way to help a business to grow! Dani has a lot of enthusiasm about what the company has achieved in

34 The Grapevine

the last year and where the business is going in the future. One important change is that Axarfusion offices now incorporate another local business, PC Competa. This partnership now enables them to provide a “one stop shop” for all your technology needs. You can now visit the office for computer repairs, computer sales and accessories as well as all of the established services Dani already offers. Dani was keen to explain you don't have to use Axarfusion for everything, but many people like the idea of using just one service provider, it can make repairs and problem solving much easier if your provider knows your complete system. Axarfusion are keen to keep their transmitters and antennas up-todate, using the latest technology to be able to provide the best internet connection to your homes. These upgrades are constantly in process and are of course free of charge to all customers. They have extended their network to the Arenas area and now have new transmitters in the Corca, Monte Alegre and Esperragueras areas. By the end of this year the fibre optic network will be expanded to include Cruz de Monte and Lomo de Tapia in Cómpeta. Although, constantly trying to expand their services, this

takes time and is often limited waiting for permissions and licences to be issued from local town halls. Dani and his team are also preparing for a new EU directive which states that all homes, rural and urban, should have access to at least 30mb of Internet. Axarfusion are already 90 % ready to go live when the directive is issued. Axarfusion have become aware of a need within the community for a competitively price fixed landline telephone service only. This will be available in all areas, with low costs call plans and it does not require you have an internet connection. If you would like to have a chat about what Axarfusion can offer, please feel free to give us a call or drop into our offices in Competa. Phoebe who works in the office is available and very happy to help. Over the last year Axarfusion has been extremely successful allowing them to reinvest to ensure a great service and excellent aftercare service. Axarfusion are exclusively offering for Grapevine readers during the month of July 2019 FREE INSTALLATION. Voluminous curtains which had faded in the sun became covers, for chairs or cushions, and blackout curtains were put to a lot of use! Most households had a sewing machine or knew someone with one.

By 1965 there were only 100 left in Britain but one was still working in 1985 in Stretford and another seen in Croyden in 2011! The price of scrap metal went down, charity shops became plentiful, so they ceased trading, but are on the rise again with a van this time. The price of scrap metal has gone up! Google is a wonderful thing.

'This is not a new thing', I said, and proceeded to chat about the 'Rag and Bone' men in the UK. (No, not the singer). As you can imaging I had quite a laugh explaining it to other nationalities, and was asked 'Why bone'? I explained its not human bones but the bone that’s left after the marrow had been scooped out then boiled for broth. They were given to the 'ragman', who presumably sold them on to make bone meal. Someone will put me right, but I think this is the explanation. They were also known as 'Totters' as well as 'Rag and Bone' men.

Over the centuries recycling was a way of life but it was called trying to survive. Whatever the rich discarded the poor made use of. If you watch Victoria on TV the Prince ordered the kitchens to give the left over food to the poor in the area.

When a suitable garment reached the end it could be cut up in strips and put with others to make a rag rug, called a 'clippy mat' in the North of England, but if too lightweight then cut up for dusters, (old cotton underpants made lovely dusters)! My aunties used old parachute silk to make their underwear! (I never inquired how and what they had to do to get it)! In my family, white cotton sheets with holes, would be 'side to middled', and then when worn out again, would be cut into squares to make hankies, then burned in the coal fire. I lived for a time in the in the North East for a while, after having lived abroad, and always seemed to have a cold and I remember that the children at my school in Wallsend sniffed while others used their sleeves, I had a rag (posh)! I'm ashamed to say my cousins and I called some children 'silver sleeves'. Poor souls probably never had cotton sheets! At the top of our street in Southern England in the 1950s, were two metal 'pig bins' and every day they were filled with vegetable peelings, and emptied every morning and taken to the pigs, we were told. It was usually the childrens job to take the bowl of peelings to the bins. Also do you remember when you were a kid and went round the street

On a Saturday volunteers turn up and pick up litter from the coastal area, the local beaches have been given the blue flag again this year. I noticed that in other towns there is a lot more litter than in Competa. Thanks to lots of bins, and cleaning teams our village looks clean, (except for the amount of dog mess and chewing gum). Most litter seems to be on the verges down to the coast where bottles, cans, and paper are thrown out of car windows. THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS Pamplonas Most Famous Festival

T

he Running of the Bulls is a free-of-charge bullrunning over an 875meter course in front of six fighting bulls accompanied by six tamed bell-oxen that lead the bulls through the narrow streets of Pamplona and up as far as the bullring. This event takes place each morning during the fiestas of Sanfermin, between the 7th and the 14th of July, at 8 o’clock in the morning. How did this tradition first begin? Butchers were responsible in olden times for bringing in the bulls from the ranches and the young apprentice butchers began to accompany the bull minders – the pastores – when these would shepherd the bulls up to the bullring. Often they would run ahead of the bulls to entice them forward. With the passing of time, the event became popular with the general public and the men began to run in front of the bulls instead of remaining behind the animals as the bull minders always do. How can the public take part?

50 The Grapevine

Participation is completely free and any person who is 18 years of age or over may take part. However, there are a series of The local police tend to be strict and firm about any kind of misbehavior and are particularly stringent in ensuring that no drunk or intoxicated runners are admitted onto the course of the run. The stretch of the course The bullrunning course crosses several narrow streets of the old quarter of Pamplona. It starts from the slope of Santo Domingo street and finishes inside the arena in the bullring. The total distance covered is 875 meters. Although this is a relatively short distance, it is impossible for a runner to cover the whole course. The whole length of the course is completely fenced in which makes it almost impossible for any bulls to escape from the course. Access in the early hours of the morning the double -fencing begins to be put in place along the streets of the course. The streets are now hosed down with water in order to remove the litter and debris left

over from the previous night’s unruly partying. At the same time, the local police help move all personnel from these streets. Nobody may remain in the space between the two lines of fencing except health personnel and accredited press people. When the last wooden gate is closed in the fencing, the streets have now become a relatively narrow passageway without an exit or an entrance. The only way for the runners to gain access to the course now is to make their way to a gateway located beside the Town Hall which is open from between 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. Spectators may also start looking for a position behind the fencing to watch the bullrunning event from there. But they must always stay behind the second line of fencing. The Build up Just before the start of the event, the runners who have chosen to make their run at the first stretch on the slope of Santo Domingo, chant a homily to the image of San Fermín, patron of the fiestas, a figure located in a niche on the wall. The words go “A San Fermín pedimos, por ser nuestro patrón,

streets along the length of the course can once again be used by the general public and the fiesta can continue with its holiday mood. How to run? Before deciding to take part in the running, find out all you can about the Running of the Bulls and about how to run. If you still want to take part, choose a particular stretch of the course and listen to advice from experienced runners. Basically, it is a question of starting to run slowly at first and when the bulls draw close behind, run with all your might as far as you can. The good runners like to get close in front of the horns and maintain their position as long as they can. You can decide how close you want to be to the bulls (the closer you are, the bigger the risk) and when the bulls begin to outrun you, pull off to one side and let them pass by. Try not to block or hinder other runners as

you pull aside (hug the wall or fencing or squeeze through the fencing if you can). Risks Running with the bulls has its risks. There is an average figure of about 2, 000 people participating in each Running of the Bulls. The bulls could gore you or knock you over or trample you with their hooves. Usually, there are some injuries, big or small, depending on many factors. Occasionally, there are serious gorings and injuries, especially when a bull gets separated from the pack or when occurs a pil-up. It is rare to have a death occur, but there have been several cases over these past thirty years. So, the event is no laughing matter.

The Propert y Feature The news on the property market and the way of life in Spain is all good. Young Spaniards are returning home, while the country is welcoming more internationals residents each year. Not only that, it’s making them welcome too! Spain has got its finances back on track. For the first time in 10 years, Spain’s public deficit meets EU requirements. That financial stability appears to be extending to the property market and life of the country too. Over half a million properties changed hands in Spain last year. This was the first time the milestone was reached since the financial crisis.

WHAT IS MY JEWELLERY MADE FROM? Gina´s Jewellery Explains.

I

f your item of jewellery is hallmarked or stamped, it should be easy to know, without doubt, what metal your jewellery is made of. But not all jewellery is stamped or hallmarked. Often, hand-made jewellery carries no stamp or hallmark. If you have a beloved piece of jewellery, it may not matter to you what material it is made from, because you love it for reasons other than its monitory value. However, it certainly will matter if your jewellery needs to be repaired, especially if it needs to be soldered! Sometimes items of jewellery are even stamped incorrectly! I once had a piece in for a repair which was stamped as Sterling Silver, but the clasp stuck to a magnet! Clearly, that part was not silver! Given that the piece was from a very famous jewellery manufacturer it was rather a surprise to its owner. So why is it important to know what your jewellery is made from?

62 The Grapevine

1. Care of your jewellery. It is important to use the correct products or cleaning method for your jewellery. Some cleaning methods can damage certain materials. Likewise, substances like chlorine can easily damage your jewellery, especially if your jewellery is plated with precious metal rather than made from solid precious metal. 2.Reaction to your skin (allergies) Some people may have an allergy to certain types of metal. Some people can only wear gold or silver, or even have an allergy to one or both of those metals. 3.Jewellery repairs. Gold and silver soldering is very brutal! It requires very high temperatures to allow gold and silver solder to flow which cannot be achieved using a soldering iron! Typically, soldering irons reach around 450 degrees Celsius, Medium silver solder flows at 720 – 765 degrees Celsius so clearly, a soldering iron just won’t do! Gold and silver solder requires the use of a gas blow torch.

Subjecting your jewellery to such harsh treatment means that the item of jewellery will inevitably have some fire scale after the soldering is complete. Although the fire scale looks awful, it is easy for a jeweller to remove by using a warm acid solution bath, a process known as “pickling”. This safely removes the fire scale from the piece which can then be polished before being reunited with its owner. The jeweller must be careful to immerse and remove the item without using any steel instruments (such as tongs or tweezers) as any steel introduced to the acid bath will immediately coat the entire contents of the bath with a coating of copper, which cannot be removed. If you are in any doubt about your metal, it is well worth having a test done to your jewellery before work begins. It can make the difference between rescuing or ruining your jewellery! CAS NEWS Happy Tales Poppy, Rosie and Toby were a litter of pups that were found near some rubbish bins when they were only six-weeks-old before they were brought to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) and were featured last month. Fortunately, CAS was able to place them in a foster home where they learned to live with a family who has an older dog, cats and a young child. After two months of TLC the pups were ready for rehoming and last month Poppy and Rosie did just that as they were each adopted by wonderful families, leaving Toby still available. Toby is a wonderful boy with a gregarious disposition who will be large when full grown as we think he is a cross between a Wire Haired Pointer and a Spanish Mastiff. He is fully vaccinated and chipped but he will not be castrated until he is about a year old. Available for Adoption *Part of CAS' efforts involve cooperating with other animal charities to find homes for pets all over Europe and a wonderful example of this was when they took on Kylie and Pedro as well as brothers Gringo and Georgio from an over burdened rescue centre in Mijas. This group needed to be

vaccinated and neutered before they went into kennels where they were housed for a few months while CAS used their Facebook contacts to find a new family for Kylie in Sweden and a new home for Gringo in Holland. These two are being prepped for their journeys and will fly to their new lives later in the month. Not to be outdone, Pedro was seen in a local magazine and has also been rehomed in Nerja, leaving Georgio still up for adoption.

Georgio is a Podenco Maneto (dwarf), short in stature and weighing about nine kilos. He is very sweet but lively and loves to chase birds. He will miss his brother when he goes to Holland as they were roommates in the Mijas rescue centre for over three years and have never been separated. If you are looking to adopt a dog or cat or perhaps willing to foster a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at 95 252 1426 or Fiona through the CAS website, www.casnerja.webs.com, or our facebook page: /casnerja. To find out more about helping CAS contact Vera at 95 252 9670.
