We can also advise on Planning Issues which can save endless difficulties later on.

News in Spain MAN ELECTROCUTES HIS EX PARTNER AND TRIES TO STRANGLE HER. A man has tried to strangle his ex partner after stunning her with an electric shock. It happened in a service station on the A-49 in Huelva, and later the woman who was unconscious woke up and injured walked to some houses where she asked for help. She was taken to hospital with diverse injuries. It’s reported the woman who is in her 40’s had been in an abusive relationship with the man, identified with the initials J.A.S. for two years. It was on May 11 last year that the attack happened in Bollullos Par de Condado. The woman said she got into her ex-partner’s car willingly, but then he drove to the service station and without saying anything attacked with a device similar to a Taser. He then tried to strangle her, and she only remembers coming round on her own. The following day the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil arrested the alleged attacker and charged him with attempted homicide. They also recovered the device which they believe had electrocuted her.

MÁLAGA TOWERS COULD STILL BE BUILT Málaga City Hall has pardoned a promoter 70.3 million € debt in a land exchange deal. Six years ago at the height of the building boom, Málaga City Hall signed a contract with the Comarex real estate promoter to reclassify the land where the old Repsol gasometers stood on the western side of the city, near the Paseo Marítimo. The deal tripled the amount of building land and the Town Hall collected 82 million €. Now with the introduction of a new municipal order confirms the buildable land, but the real estate bubble has burst, and a crisis in the real estate company which is linked to the NovaCaixaGalicia bank, and they cannot pay the 70.3 million € which is still pending, and neither are the interested in the project any more. Málaga City Hall has now decided to revise the deal and has opted for become the co-owners of the land where the construction of four towers, with 35 and 29 floors, has been planned since 2006. Initially towers with more than 40 floors
THE BODIES OF TWO PENSIONERS FOUND IN ESTEPONA Two pensioners, a 77 year old man and his 75 year old partner have been found dead in Estepona in what is thought to be a case of macho violence. Both the man and the woman had been widowed, and first indications are that the woman had been hit on the head by her new sentimental companion who then committed suicide. He had a cut on his arm. Any third party has initially been ruled out.

NEW AVE HIGH SPEED LINK BETWEEN MÁLAGA AND VALENCIA The railway infrastructure company ADIF says that it has completed a key work to directly connect the AVE high speed train line from Málaga to Valencia, without having to go first to Madrid. The seven kilometer link between Torrejón de Velasco, Madrid, and Yeles, Toledo, means that RENFE can now put on sale tickets for direct services between Valencia and Málaga, reducing journey time by a further hour. The link has cost 71.1 million €. Development Minister, Ana Pastor, announced yesterday that journey time between Málaga and Valencia was down to 4 hours 35 minutes.

man in central Russia had to be rescued by emergency workers from a rubbish chute after he jumped into it to hide from his girlfriend. He plunged three floors from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Tyumen, Siberia, before getting stuck. Residents then heard the 31-yearold man's cries for help. Rescue workers had to use tools to cut him free. He was not seriously hurt. He had had a row with his girlfriend, officials said, without elaborating. Soviet-era buildings in Russia frequently have a metal rubbish chute in the stairwell, with a latch opening on each floor. Tyumen emergency service officials contacted by the BBC said the incident happened late on Wednesday, but the man is already back at work. "According to the 31-year-old victim, he jumped into the metal chute on the eighth floor to escape his girlfriend," a statement on the service's website said. The officials said there had been a similar incident in Tyumen a few years ago, again with a happy outcome.

migratory bird has caused alarm in a village in south-eastern Turkey after locals mistook it for an Israeli spy. Villagers' suspicions were aroused when the bird, a common European bee-eater, was found dead in a field with a metal ring around its leg stamped "Israel". They called the police after deciding its nostrils were unusually large and may have carried a microchip fitted by Israeli intelligence for spying. It was taken to government experts for examination and declared safe.

44-year-old Hawaiian surfer has been recognised by Guinness World Records for riding the biggest wave ever thought to have been ridden. Last November Garrett McNamara caught a 78ft wave at Nazare, off the coast of Portugal, beating the previous 2008 record by more than a foot. McNamara began surfing at age 11 and became professional six years later. He has described his achievement as a stroke of luck and has used his feat to urge people to follow their passions. The giant wave was located above an underwater canyon famous for being the world's biggest wave generator. McNamara has said that on the day he broke the record, he at first had not wanted to take a ride but his friends urged him to catch a few waves. "Everything came together. Everything felt right," he said

angers in Australia's Northern Territory have shot dead a saltwater crocodile with a taste for dogs, clothing and other oddities, local media report. The 3.5-metre long (11.5ft) crocodile was attacking a dog at a beach near the community of Galiwinku on Elcho island on Tuesday when it was shot. The injured dog survived the attack. Police said they found the remains of another dog and a football in the crocodile's stomach. It had also swallowed a pair of children's shorts and a nappy. A local official was quoted by ABC news website as saying the crocodile posed a threat to the community, as it had been terrorising pets in the area.

weet and succulent aptly describes the lovely little portulacas. Many of you will know them as the wonderfully colourful plants that revel in the heat and sunshine of Andalucian summers. For colour and gaiety there’s little to match them for sunny pots and they look so bright and cheerful against our white walls. The portulaca genus belongs to the plant family portulacaceae, made up of over 50 different species mostly found in tropical and warm temperate areas. The name portulaca stems from the Latin portare meaning ‘to carry’ and lac meaning milk, referring to the milky sap of the plant. Four of the species would commonly be seen here, three are highly decorative whilst the fourth member is considered as a weed – if a rather pretty and edible one!

Portulaca grandiflora is fetchingly known as the moss rose and is a native of Argentina, southern Brazil and Uruguay. It is also seen in South-East Asia and the Balkans. In Bangladesh it is called time fuul meaning ‘time flower’ because it flowers at a specific time; in Vietnam it is known as hoa muoigio, meaning the ‘ten o’clock flower’ because the plant is in full flower at 10 o’clock in the morning. I’ve not noticed such a specific timetable here – though it certainly needs sunshine and warmth to open up, only partially opening its flowers in cloudy conditions. The plant stays small and compact and is a very rapid grower once the temperatures start to rise. With fleshy stems and leaves, they are one of the few annual succulents. The leaves are thick, cylindrical and pointed at the tips. They will become very drought resistant; in fact, overwaterin g them can rot the plants, so don’t

be too kind to them; they’re happy in poor and light soils. When you water, do it lightly as they are only shallow rooting so do not need copious amounts. The flowers are about 3cm across and they come in white, yellow, peach, orange and various shades of pink. There are singles and doubles and some are striped or spotted with contrasting colours, so expect a great variation. Pots that you buy will invariably be sown with a mixture of seeds so you’ll get many colours in one pot. Buying just one plant ensures that you’ll have little moss roses for many years to come as, although annual, they are prolific self-seeders. They’ll appear in all sorts of nooks and crannies, sprouting out of old walls and cracked paving. Try them as an informal edging along a garden pathway and they’ll spread a rainbow of colour over a gravelled area. Portulaca umbraticola, wingpod purslane. This portulaca, a native of Arizona, can, here, be perennial if the winter is not too hard. It forms a mound of succulent foliage, to 0.5m across, or more, studded with bright single flowers in orange, yellow, red and hot pink, throughout all the warmer months. Once temperatures start to drop in autumn and the amount of daylight decreases, so does bloom production. Around mid-summer, cut back the plants by about 50%, fertilise them and they will come back to life strongly – stunning in their vibrancy. Portulaca oleracea is more commonly known as purslane or verdolaga in Spanish. It can be invasive, when suited, and is, thus, in some areas treated as a weed. In cultivated rich ground it can grow up to 30 cm tall, with a wide spread and is found up to about 1000m altitude. Look out for it invading your vegetable plot where frequent watering is to its liking and treat it as yet another crop. Its creeping stems and fleshy leaves are both edible, either raw or cooked. Try it as an addition to stir fries, lightly steamed or heaped on salads. The flavour is of lemon/cucumber with a texture reminiscent of mushrooms. They have very high levels of omega 3 oils and are also high in protein – it is, surprisingly, a better nutrient source than spinach. If you don’t like the taste/texture, mix the leaves into soups or stews – they help thicken and flavour.
forms an attractive evergreen succulent low shrub which can mound to 1.5m in a garden situation. Its small rounded (sometimes) variegated leaves and dark red stems make it a quiet good looker. It can flower, though somewhat erratically, when it will smother itself in tiny starry pink flowers. They are a rich pollen source and much loved by various insects. For gardeners, it is one of those easy-care plants that every garden needs, very drought resistant and a good soil binder too. Interestingly, in its homeland, the plant is grazed by elephants that eat the succulent top growth, leaving the plant to spread horizontal low branches and survive. Other grazing animals, such as domesticated livestock, will eat the entire plant and kill it. It is also a great favourite of tortoises! Humans eat the leaves to quench thirst; they have a rather bitter cucumber taste. Leaves are also chewed as a cure for sore throats and mouth infections. Externally it relieves blisters and is soothing on bites, stings and sunburn. Honey made from the flowers of the porkbush is said to be wonderfully flavoured – a delicacy that I, unfortunately, haven’t had the opportunity to try. And another bonus to this plant is that it makes an excellent carbon sponge. A stand of portulacaria removes more carbon from the atmosphere than an equal area of deciduous forest. The portulacas are such an interesting range of plants, try some of them!

Little Heroes
O
n a rainy Saturday afternoon in early May, a small band of little boys travelled from Competa to Nerja to take part in XIV Spanish Open Yawara Jitsu Championships. Oliver, Max, Ruben and Dani, under the expert tutorage of their trainer Sergio were to go up against some of the biggest clubs in Spain, from as far afield as Murcia and Madrid. A daunting prospect for these four little boys whose ages range from 8 to 10 years old. For the uninitiated I would like to explain that Yawara Jitsu is a martial art which first appeared in 1975, in the gymnasium Toyama in Málaga. This discipline uses the best techniques for selfdefense from various martial arts (including Judo, Karate, Aikido, Kung-Fu, Thai Boxing, etc) to create a scientific system of self-defense which strives to be rational and progressive and attains the maximum efficiency with minimum of effort. The boys, looking resplendent in their uniforms, known as Gi’s (pronounced gee), had first of all, to perform individually. Each child had to perform one of the many ‘Katas’ which are a series of moves combined together to form a routine, each routine is known as a Kata. They then had to perform a group ‘Kata’, in this case, Oliver, Max and Ruben performed. They not only had to remember each move but had to remain perfectly in unison for the duration of the performance. Finally, they had to perform the moves known as ‘Technicas’. This is where the children have to show their knowledge of the
defensive moves by disabling and disarming their potential attackers. The children were awarded points by a panel of judges, they were also watched by many of their competitors from around the country along with hundreds of proud parents and family members – quite a daunting task for anyone, I think you’ll agree! Finally the competition was at an end and each child had done the best they could. It was time for the prize giving. Many prizes were awarded before they reached the awards for Best Katas. The bronze medal was given, the silver medal was given, then it was time to give the gold. The winner of the gold medal for Best Katas went to Oliver from Competa! Our little club also went on to win the second prize for their ‘Group Katas’, for which they received a silver medal each as well as a trophy for their club! What an achievement! Our little village club had been represented by four little boys who had shown the bigger more experienced clubs from all over Spain that they were a force to be reckoned with!! The boys did a fantastic job and parents and tutors alike were very proud indeed – especially me, since Oliver is my son!! Their trophy is now on display in Formas Gym where the club trains. So well done boys and well done also to Maestro Sergio, who it has to be said, has the patience of a saint. We’re all very proud of our ‘little heroes’.
Sam Benson.

Creative Property Marketing
S
upported private selling and no commission to pay when you sell...
We are David & Sarah Rick who have over 30 years experience of selling property around the world (the past 5 years in the Málaga area). We knew it was time to offer buyers and sellers of property in Andalucia a way to save money and improve communication. Our belief is that the winning formula for successful property sales is to support both seller and buyer but bring them together as soon as possible and let them get to know each other and the property involved. The buyers love it – they can ask us technical questions such as current property law etc. but ask the seller, intricate questions about the property that perhaps only the seller will have the answers to. The buyer gets immediate and accurate information, the seller knows instantly if the buyer is interested and both sides can organise viewing’s to suit each other. Both buyer and seller benefit from no commission being involved.
Estate agents in Spain use property portals/websites to advertise their properties (usually Kyero.com). Creative Property Marketing is an advertising agency and we use Kyero.com PLUS other world leaders such as Prime Location Overseas, Right Move Overseas, Think Spain and more. Weekly, these property portals/websites generate millions of visitors between them who are searching for property in Spain. We make sure properties get the very best exposure and reach a wider audience than is available anywhere else. We charge €289.10 (€245 plus IVA) for 12 months advertising on all the leading portals and we do not charge commission when the house is sold. No hidden costs, no extra charges, our support and we will load your property for you if you prefer. When selling privately with the help of Creative Property Marketing, you can still use estate agents so why not give us a try! You have everything to gain – why not give it a go...

What on earth is a Fish and Chip Baby?
A
ll of a sudden, there are mentions of Fish and Chip Babies on local blogs, and small groups of ladies are knitting tiny, brightly coloured garments, both at home, and in public places. So what is it all about? Newborn babies in some of Africa’s most needy communities are being sent home from hospital wrapped in newspaper, because their mothers have no clothes for them. This is why they are called Fish & Chip Babies. Many of the babies are born premature or already infected with HIV, and are at risk of catching pneumonia, especially when they are inadequately clothed for chilly African nights. Knitting circles and ladies groups in the UK, as well as individuals, are knitting tiny jumpers and beanie hats to be sent to the maternity hospitals, to help give these tiny people a little comfort and warmth. Recently, a Spanish appeal started in Almeria province, and has spread to the Axarquia. After only a couple of weeks, there is a growing network of knitters, and a newly created website www.knitforafrica.weebly.com which has news, pictures, an easy pattern to download, and a forum for knitters to share ideas and stay in touch. Transport has been arranged to take the garments to the UK on a regular basis, ready for sending directly to where they are needed, and various businesses have kindly agreed to be collection points for completed garments and donations of wool and knitting needles. So far in our area, there are two collection points: Sands & C at Torrox Costa and Todo Papel in Cómpeta. Local co-ordinator, Lynn Murrell, says “It has been very encouraging to see people dig out their knitting needles and get knitting for these babies. One of our jumpers may be the only gift a baby ever receives in its short life, and is a
38
The Grapevine
tangible way of expressing the belief that every baby is special. One of our ladies even attaches a tiny heart tag to each jumper she makes!” Knit Ins, or Knit Outs, depending on whether it is more comfortable to knit indoors or out, are proving to be cheerful social occasions, and are announced on local forums, as well as on the website. “Everyone is welcome,” says Lynn, “even if they aren’t confident about knitting a whole garment, we have one or two ‘communal’ jumpers that they can come along and knit a bit onto. Donations of wool and needles are very welcome, so even if you are no longer knitting, you can play a part by donating your stash of oddments.” This Fish and Chip Baby appeal is eager to raise awareness and increase the number of knitters, so craft groups who are already knitting might like to become involved. “I’d like to think that we could become a network, rather than an organisation,” says Lynn. “Using the infrastructure we have set up can free individuals and groups to get knitting, without worrying about what to do with the jumpers they make.” Details of the appeal can be found at www.knitforafrica.weebly.com or contact Lynn at wendy.redwood@gmail.com

unset Properties Spain www.sunsetproperties-spain.com was started 8 years ago by Denise Hill who already had 3 years experience in the real estate business in Cómpeta. Denise has a wealth of experience in the whole process of buying and selling property in Spain. At Sunset Properties Spain we have a wide range of properties for sale across the whole of the Axarquía region and we offer a friendly, reliable and professional service. Sellers If you are considering selling your property please contact us and we’ll guide you every step of the way. We’ll be truthful with you about the market value and presentation of your house plus, we’ll prepare a comprehensive description of your property which will include many photographs. At Sunset Properties Spain we work entirely from the internet. Nowadays people who want to buy property abroad usually begin their research on the internet and in order to assist in this process, our website is easy to use, always up to date and contains comprehensive information on all aspects of buying in Spain. Home owners are often surprised when their documentation is not entirely correct. Even if you used the services of a lawyer when you bought your house, there can still be issues which need to be addressed in relation to your Escritura, IBI or utility bills. We will check all of your documents and advise you what, if anything, needs to be done. The sale of a property with the right documentation is much less likely to be delayed or to fail than one where there are unresolved problems. Buyers At Sunset Properties Spain our company ethos is all about customer service and we aim to make both buying and selling as stress free as possible

for all our clients by guiding them through the whole process from beginning to end. We never pressurise anyone into buying anything and we never abandon anyone – once a client always a client, even after the sale is completed. Our comprehensive after sales service is very important to us and we are here to help you with whatever queries or problems you might have be it arranging for the connection of a telephone; help in finding reliable tradesmen or assistance at the Town Hall - you name it, we’re always here to help you! Current State of the Market There is no doubt that, due to the global economic crisis, property prices in Spain have fallen and now is a great time to buy your dream home in the sun. The housing market has slowed down since the buoyant times a few years ago and most sellers are prepared to consider a reasonable offer for their property. But remember, sellers have their own ‘bottom line’ below which they are either unable or unwilling to go so buyer beware – don’t be too sure that you are in a strong position – too much haggling over the price could lose you your dream home! It is vital to have someone that you can trust on the spot with knowledge of the local property market in order to help you secure the best possible deal. That’s where we come in - we are here to guide both buyers and sellers through the whole process and to achieve a situation where both parties are satisfied with the outcome. Its not a dance class as such as the philosophy is all about moving at your own pace and enjoying yourself. The feedback we always get from newbies is how fast the hour has flew” Nicola was a former competitive dancer and brings amazing energy to the classes. She told us, “ We have a real mixed bag of ages from 20 to 70, all nationalities and upwards of 30 people in Competa for each session. The complete mix of people means we have a great atmosphere which is what Zumba is all about. Costa Baking Co. C
osta Baking Co has recently celebrated its first birthday and what an incedible first year it has been!. I spoke to Sue Taylor, owner of Costa Baking Co and home of Costa Cupcakes, at her new premises in Caleta de Velez. Sue originally trained as a General Nurse and worked for the NHS in London, she moved to Andalucia in 1999 where she also continued to work as a nurse. Then at the age of 46 she was given the news that she never expected to hear, she had Cancer. During her recovery she had time to reevaluate her life and plan for her future. Having always baked for friends and family, she decided that now was the right time to introduce her talent of producing beautiful little cupcakes and introduce them into the Spanish market to see if cupcakes would be adopted in to the hearts of andalucians as readily as the rest of the world. After such an illness, she felt that there was no better time to roll the dice and take a risk. She met Marisa Azuaga when their kids were in nursery over 10 years ago and they have been firm friends ever since. Sue baked Marisa her first batch of cupcakes, and eagerly anticipated her response. Marisa gave Sue incredible feedback by saying that it was practically a crime not to sell the little cupcakes to friends, family and neighbours (and by saying, that means a raised voice and hand gesticulations that only a Spanish woman uses!). In the beginning, Marisa provided invaluable support with her knowledge of Spanish legislation and was always on hand to translate when

the going got particularly tough. Without Marisa, costa cupcakes would not have set up in their original permises in Torre Del Mar. Sue will always be grateful for her initial help, support and continued friendship. In March this year, Costa Baking Co moved from Torre Del Mar to the new shop in Caleta de Velez. Sue explained that after working tirelessly to introduce cupcakes, varities and flavours to this part of the world, the long hours have started to pay off. Not only did Sue need bigger premises, and a bigger kitchen to provide the capacity for demand but her customers needed easier access to the shop. Costa Baking Co has parking right outside so you can easily drop in to personalise your order and them pop back in to pick up your cupcakes or commissioned cake. Sue also works closely with El Basilisco Bakery in Competa who deliver bread to Costa Baking Co every morning. El Basilisco are well known for their great bread, donuts and pastries and are moving to bigger premises in Torrox Costa very soon! In the meantime, why not pop in to Costa Baking Co and try some? The new shop allows Sue to take orders more easily as people often come in with a photo of the type of cake they want and she will discuss their requirements and what she can do. Sue makes cakes for all occasion’s birthdays, communions, weddings, business openings and most recently for a TV program! A man ordered a box of 6 cupcakes all with special messages to be written on them. He was going to present them to the girl who picked him on a

Spanish blind date program shown on Antena 3 ‌.. So the Costa Cupcake is now famous! Also on hand in the Shop is Dom, who speaks German, Swiss, English and Spanish and Sue described him as is very popular with the customers as most people can converse in their own language with him. I asked Sue about plans for the immediate future. She explained they will have a stall with cakes on display and also to take orders at the Nerja arts festival on the 17t to 24th June, champions league football cupcakes (yes really!) and also San Juan is just around the corner. Excitingly, Sue also has plans to introduce her own cupcake school from the facility at Caleta de Velez..
cake making for a gender revealing ceremony in America and posted it on facebook. The idea is that proud parents-to-be cut into the cake at a family gathering or party to reveal to their guests pink or blue sponge to show the sex of their expectant addition to the family.. Within a few days of this new posting Sue had an order from someone for this type of cake in Spain! It seems, even in the present economic climate, there is always a time and place for a costa cupcake !
Sue is extremely dedicatedwhich can be seen by not only the success of her shop, but also her facebook page with now boasts over 2,000 likers – check it out at www.facebook.com/costacucpakes Her business acumen and ability to spot a new trend is in evidence when She found an article on

It also provides a safety feature of holding broken glass together in the event of an accident for instance older single glazed glass is made safe especially in areas of constant use by children. It comes in many different colours and shades silver bronze blue green black etc. and once installed is maintenance free it adds privacy to your home, office, vehicle or yacht practically removes fading, and will enhance the ascetic value overall.

The Tint film can also be supplied as a Solar blind if you want the flexibility of only seasonal use. They come as a roller blind that can be lowered to whatever position is needed to reflect glare or pulled down to cover all the window to prevent heat but still giving that all important view and insulating the window in winter.
No you won't loose that warming effect of the winter sun during those cold but bright Andalusian winters because the light wave length changes due of the angle of the sun and so heat passes through the film, however the film disperses excessive glare so that you can still

PERGOLAS T
he location of a Pergola is very important when choosing a design for your garden. Most commonly a pergola will be attached to your house, or used as an outdoor room in the garden. You can also add a pergola to a large deck, patio, or next to a swimming pool. Pergolas should be used to provide a focal point for the garden. A pergola can be used as an entrance to a large area in your garden or used as a transition from one outdoor space to another. Similar to a large arbor, pergolas provide shade, an open and airy outdoor space and can be used to support climbing plants such as vines and roses. Another thing to consider in your pergola design is the sun. Depending on how you place your top

beams, you can create more or less light and shade. Wood is the most common material used, with cedar wood being the popular choice. Pergolas can also be constructed out of steel and aluminum, as well as decorative brick, using quality materials that ensure a long lasting structure. Try to incorporate some of the same colors and materials that are used in your home into your pergola. By installing a stone or wood floor, or adding built-in seating, or a table and chairs, permanent planters and lighting will create a stunning outdoor room. Visit our website to see various examples of Pergola design. Let LT Construction be your first choice when calling on expert advice in designing your pergola and garden combination.

This help is irrespective of where you are being treated either through the Spanish Health System or privately. We held our May meeting at The Cudeca Hospice, near Benalmadena where in addition to our meeting, members were able to view all the hospice facilities. This included the In-Patients Department together with delightful garden, the outpatients day centre where they learnt of all the complimentary services available to day patients; reiki, reflexology, hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, gym and gentle exercise to name but a few, and the administrative offices of the fundraising department. Many of the
Competa Support group members are volunteers at local fund raising events so it was extremely beneficial for them to see where the money is needed and spent. The informative, enjoyable day was made possible by the generousity of The CAMPO Team who kindly made a large contribution by sponsoring the majority of the bus transfer fee from Competa to Benalmadena – another great example of CAMPO supporting it’s local community. The Excellence of Bodegas Bentomiz Wine!
B
odegas Bentomiz has been producing top quality wines from the steep slatey terraces above Sayalonga for almost ten years now. As a young winery the Bodega has done exceptionally well: its Ariyanas wine range has garnered prizes and plaudits, plus top listings in prestigious restaurants, as well as wine guides, such as Guía Peñín. And now the Bodega has won a very special award. The Iberwine International Wine Competition has over 300 wines from all around the world vying for silver, gold and ‘gran oro’ medals in each of 11 different categories and, most of all, for the top prize: the Iberwine Excellence Award. A jury of professional winetasters, wine journalists, sommeliers (wine waiters) and oenologists (wine makers), appointed by Competition Director Cristina Alcalá, taste the wines blind. Absolute anonymity of the samples is guaranteed by the organisers to ensure a fair result. And this year the jury awarded the Iberwine Excellence 2012 to Bodegas Bentomiz´s Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso 2007 (naturalmente dulce). This is the top prize, given to the wine with the highest marks overall: the competition winner. This major prize, a great achievement for Bodegas Bentomiz, is further proof of the huge potential of wine from the Axarquía region, and (in this case) of our wonderful local Moscatel de Alejandría grapes: these are the grapes you see growing on the hillsides around you all summer long. So just what is this prize winning wine like? Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso is an unfortified sweet white wine. (Unfortified means that alcohol is not added to stop the fermentation process; the technique used instead is refrigerating the fermenting wine down to -2ºC). It has been aged for six months in new French oak barrels, giving
64
The Grapevine
the wine additional complexity. It´s aroma hints at herbs and spices, the minerality of the slate terroir the grapes came from, and mature fruit. On the tongue it has a honeyed sweetness developing into exotic sensations, with a long, delicious aftertaste. Bodegas Bentomiz recommends serving it at 10°C and aerating it (swirl it in the glass). They add that it pairs up well with pâtés, foie gras, blue cheese and tropical fruit desserts. It sounds absolutely mouth-watering. Why waste money on wines from the north when we have this gem in our own region? Visit the bodega and try it for yourself!

Darts Singles Tournament – Bar La Peña, Archez
S
o as the darts league drew to a close, for some of the elite chuckers there was the darts equivalent of the summer football European Championships. As with professional footballers, as a top darts chucker it's always difficult to maintain your fitness and performance levels after a grueling season and perform in another major tournament. But that's how it is when you're at the top of top your game so fourteen of Cómpeta's elite trundled off to La Peña in Archez for six weeks of arduous singles darts. Now, when I say “singles darts” I don't mean some bar room game for sad, overweight, beer swilling, sweaty men who can't find a mate. Oh no, I mean a bar room game for sad, overweight, beer swilling, sweaty men who also happen to be irresistible to the fairer sex. Well, most of them.
66
The Grapevine
As I said it was the equivalent of the football Euro Championships, which, despite thirteen Brits, qualified as European as we had a token Spaniard involved in the form of Paco from Archez, making up the fab fourteen. Well, to be honest, as we were starting at 8pm each night, on the whole you had more chance of the Spanish turning up on time than Todo Papel having a January sale. (Every day is a sale day in Todo Papel, of course). Paco didn’t let us down and was late every night! The competition involved every player playing each other over 3 legs and the top four playing off in two semi-finals and a final. So let the chucking begin. The odds on favourite, Colin 'Andy Time' Jeffrey, had a slow start losing in the early weeks to both Dean 'The Deer' Hunter and Alick 'Yours Truly' Howard, but this was to prove to be a minor blip. (As I was organiser I

figured if I got him early he would be rusty and it paid off. Kerching!)
heep more pressure on ‘Pretty Boy’ and with the game standing at 2-0 into the final leg it wasn’t looking good. A lapse in the final leg and a 3-0 victory for ‘Pretty Boy’ against ‘See You Jimmy’ saw him take the final semi-final spot. Dave ‘Double D’ Dawson had come close but was also pipped at the final hurdle.
Another contender, Steve 'Pretty Boy' Twiselton, had a poor start and was dropping points, but again this was to belie the final result. As the weeks passed by the competition took shape and despite a shaky start Colin 'Andy Time' Jeffrey was topping the league. Mick 'Up the Villa' Lewis was performing well and had won the most matches whilst Tony 'See You Jimmy' McLoughlan was still waiting for a win. Another wooden spoon Steve Napier, Mick Lewis, Steve Twiselton & Colin Jeffrey to stir his porridge awaited.
The Finalists
The semi-finals were contested between Colin ‘Andy Time’ Jeffrey and Steve ‘Pretty Boy’ Twiselton and it was a close run thing with Colin finally coming off best 3-2. The other semi between Stevie ‘The Weevie’ Napier and Mick ‘Up the Villa’ Lewis was not quite as close leaving Colin and ‘The Weevie’ to battle out the final. The occasion obviously got to ‘The Weevie’ as Colin took him 3-0.
As the final deciding week arrived, effectively 3 out of 4 of the semi-final places were as good as decided. Stevie 'The Weevie' Napier had put himself It had been an exciting climax in a semi-final spot with Mick to a hard fought 6 weeks of 'Up the Villa' Lewis. There was high quality darts (blimey, a fight for the fourth spot that beer’s strong in La Peña!) between Alick 'Yours Truly' to rival anything the Howard, Dave 'Double D' Premiership football can Dawson and ‘Tottenham’ Paul throw at us. As well as Burgin. Outside bets came in trophies for the finalists and the form of Geoff ‘Ruthless’ medals for the semi-finalists Dave Dawson receives the Highest Checkout Tyler and Dennis ‘Barsteward’ winners of the most 180s went Trophy from Alick Howard Haslam but certainly they to ‘Tottenham ‘Paul Burgin and Dave ‘Double D’ Dawson were going to have an impact with ‘Double D’ walking off with the highest on the final outcome. Other players who were checkout of 143. also ready to upset the apple cart were Geoff ‘The Hose’ Etheridge and Dave ‘Border’ Collier. A huge thank you to Pepe at La Peña for hosting the tournament and keeping us all refreshed. Steve ‘Pretty Boy’ Twiselton was put under most pressure as he warmed up for a decisive game Time for all the overpaid, overrated footballers against Dean ‘The Deer’ Hunter. A loss could in the Euro Championships to match the sad, leave him needing a whitewash victory against Tony ‘See You Jimmy’ McLoughlan. It didn’t overweight, beer swilling, sweaty darts men of help his nerves as Dave ‘Double D’ Dawson Axarquia for excitement. (Easy ladies, calm played ‘Under Pressure’ by Queen at high yourselves!) volume as he practiced. He was visibly shaken and the tactic worked as he came second. MANCHESTER CITY
THE OLD DESK
Mancini's men win the Premier League. Well paid, City. Well paid.
Eric is looking for a new desk for his office and he spots one that looks perfect in an antique shop window. He goes inside and asks the shopkeeper how much it is.
Mancini's post-match interview: I would like to thank all the loyal fans who supported us, who came down running on the field to celebrate with the players, especially those who came back when they were already in the bus 5 minutes before the match ends..."
"That desk is going for £2000," says the shopkeeper. "£2000 for an old desk? That's outrageous!" exclaims Eric. "Ah," says the shopkeeper, "but this is a magic desk." He turns to the desk and asks, "Desk, how much money do I have in my pocket?”
Jason (Milton Keynes) - via Facebook
THE ROMANTIC I left a trail of rose petals from the front door, up the stairs, and to the bedroom. I sprinkled some more over the bed. I sat in the corner wearing nothing but her beautiful silk robe with a bottle of vintage wine on ice on the end table. I heard the door open and her walking up the stairs, I wanted this to be the most romantic evening ever.
The desk taps one of its legs on the floor four times. The shopkeeper turns out his pocket and, sure enough, there are four pound coins there. “Wow, that's pretty cool," says Eric. "Alright, desk, how much money does my wife have in her bank account?" At this, the desk goes wild, manically banging all four of its legs up and down repeatedly for over five minutes non-stop. "Damn, where did she get all that from?" asks Eric. The desk's legs slide apart and its drawers fall down.
Mary T- Competa
I was quite nervous... Now all I needed was the perfect way to introduce myself.
Jason (Milton Keynes) - via Facebook
THE FUNERAL My wife turned to me during her mother's funeral and hissed, "When we get home later, I'm going to make you pay for this!" For the life of me I couldn't think of what I had done wrong.
THE BLIND DATE My mate set me up on a blind date. He said, "She's a lovely girl, but there's something you should know... She's expecting a baby."
Maybe it's because I wasn't sharing my popcorn.
Mary T- Competa
I felt like a right idiot waiting in the pub wearing nothing but a nappy.
THE POKER MATCH
Jason (Milton Keynes) - via Facebook
I came home from the pub four hours late last night.
THE THEIF
"Where the hell have you been?" screamed my wife. I said, "I've been playing poker with some blokes." “Playing poker with some blokes?" she repeated. “Well, you can pack your bags and go!"
Whoever stole my copy of Microsoft Office - I will track you down. You have my Word.
Jason (Milton Keynes) - via Facebook
"So can you" I said, "This isn't our house anymore.”
