This month we focus a little on the village of Competa where themagazine originally started and it is also my hometown! My family and I moved here just over ten years ago and saw a niche in the market for a magazine to be focused on the inland villages around the Competa area. This didn't mean just selling advertising space but actually providing useful local information and printing articles from local writers. The magazine naturally spread down to the coast but we will always remember where we started. So, this month we have gone back to our roots. We have focused on Competa by providing a map of the village which highlights the local businesses and amenities it has to offer. This map should enable the tourist to find what they are looking for much more easily and also shows what the village has to offer. We couldn't forget the World Cup this month so we have put a doublepage planner in this months magazine on pages 54 and 55 so you knowwho's playing and when! Also to get you in the spirit of things we have a page of world cup facts too! Finally, well done to Jean who wins the f"ind the wine glass" competition and wins a prize from EGO Hair and Beauty in Competa This month the Pavo Real sponsor a prize of a Sunday lunch for two people. Having had lunch there a few times it really is worth winning and looking for that wine glass! Enjoy and keep reading (and looking for the wine glass!) The Editor

NEWS IN SPAIN News from Around Spain

A

woman has been arrested by Spanish police and has confessed to killing the politician Isabel Carrasco, telling investigators she had held a grudge against the leader of the León provincial government since her daughter lost her job at the council in 2011, local newspapers reported. The 55-year-old woman told police she had been planning the attack for weeks as revenge for the way her 35-year-old daughter had been treated, according to the Diario de Léon.In 2011, the daughter's temporary contract with the León provincial council ended and another candidate was chosen to replace her. A labour dispute soon erupted after the council said it had mistakenly overpaid her €12,000 (£9,800) and asked that the money be returned. Days before the killing, the dispute was settled in favour of the council and the daughter was asked to pay €6,500.The role that the daughter, who was also arrested, played in the killing is still being investigated by authorities.

be forgotten" on the internet has applauded a landmark European Court ruling against Google . "Like anyone would be when you tell them they're right, I'm happy," Mario Costeja González told the Guardian over the phone from the north-western city of A Coruña. "I've been saying to people, if Google was good before, now it's perfect." The ruling says that Google and other search engines must remove data from past results if requested to do so by a member of the public. Costeja González's battle began in 2009, when Costeja he discovered that a Google search of his name pulled up legal notices from the late 1990s, and after a fruitless confrontation with the publishing newspaper he eventually found allies at Spain's data protection agency.

There are also plans to include a trench containing razor wire at the foot of the wall.

police closed the road up the mountain during the mass, and only pedestrians were allowed up. Even walking the road through the vineyards, everyone is fair game for being squirted with wine.

LA BATALLA DEL VINO

E

very year on June 29th, the town of Haro, in the heart of La Rioja is the site of a major battle. Hundreds of Spaniards celebrate by soaking each other with wine, using any means possible. Squirt guns, sprayers, boxed wine and bottles are used to wet everyone within range. Early in the morning people head out of town, on foot or by car through the vineyards and up the side of a mountain to San Felices. They make the hike up the mountain, and celebrate mass for their city's patron saint. Most

dress in white from head to toe, and tie the traditional red handkerchiefs around their necks. They carry wine - in bottles, bota bags, boxes, squirt guns and even sprayers with backpacks. The mass ends and the battle begins in the hills and on the road back down to town. As everyone returns to town, they circle the main plaza while bands play typical music. Lots of visitors park in the vineyards outside of town, and walk the rest of the way. So many cars try to park in the fields that the police direct traffic. In 2010,

Recommendations - If You're Going... Dress in White - Like the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans." In this case, that means you should dress in white, at least in an old white t-shirt. If you don't, you'll stand out like a sore thumb and become more of a target. Bring a Change of Clothing - No matter what, you'll get wet, so bring a change of clothing because it is brisk in the morning when your clothing is soaking wet. That means a change of shoes and socks, too! Bring a Towel - Bring an old towel, so you can at least dry your hands and face. Come Armed - Be sure to bring a large squirt gun or bota (wine skin) filled with red wine. If you don't, you'll feel frustrated after being squirted a few times with wine, and wish you could "squirt back."

Known as the Fiesta del Agua y del Jamรณn (the Water and Ham Festival), battle commences on the stroke of midnight; buckets are filled, water pistols are aimed and even hosepipes are directed from balconies in a good natured frenzy of hydro-mania. Anybody is considered fair game in this crazy fiesta. By the end of the battle the whole town resembles a gushing river.

FIESTA DEL AGUA Y DEL JAMร N

L

anjarรณn, home to the famous natural springs of the Alpujarras, in the province of Granada, adds an unusual twist to the annual festival of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist). The coastal towns along the Costa Tropical celebrate the 23rd

10 The Grapevine

of June by setting up camp on the beaches and indulging in an all night barbeque, accompanied by much music and dancing. In contrast, the locals of Lanjarรณn celebrate 23rd June by staging a huge water fight, drenching anyone and everyone who crosses their path.

After a quick dry off the party really gets going with copious amounts of beer washing down equally copious amounts of mouthwatering jamรณn. And of course, what Spanish fiesta would be complete without a dazzling spectacle of ear-blasting fireworks illuminating the night sky? This fiesta is a must for anyone visiting Las Alpujarras on June 23rd.

ONE VOICE AND CORAXALIA CONCERT Fabulous night of music in Competa

O

ne Voice and CoraXalia treated Competa to an amazing evening of sacred choral music last month under the direction of Spanish Tenor Eusebio Pita. The show was held in the church with a perfect acoustic for such an event and was packed. One voice opened proceedings and under the new direction of Eusebio I can only say they have entered a different league, giving an almost flawless performance, starting with an enchanting rendition of Psalm 23. The balance and clear diction between the members of One Voice was exceptional. CoraXalia held the next section

16 The Grapevine

brilliantly with a beautiful arrangement of Ave Verum by William Byrd. Eusebio Pita offered a solo of Ave Maria by Charles Gounod, which was incredible. His tembre was perfect and the power of his voice filled every inch of the venue. He received a richly deserved standing ovation for his performance. For me the highlight of the show was when the two choirs came together for a spectacular finale. The different vocal sections of the choir were crystal clear and the harmony they achieved brought many goose bumps out amongst the audience! Entrances and finishes were perfect across the

whole ensemble. They included a virtuoso performance of Bogoroditse Devo by Sergei Rachmaninov. Tom Robinson provided reliable piano support, though I have to say that the electronic keyboard can never do justice in such an environment. With singers of this quality we should seriously consider getting a good baby grand piano installed in the church. The audience response was rapturous and all monies raised go to CARITAS, supporting people locally. Well done to the organisers, more please soon. Ray Rowden

Café Con Leche – is the next most popular way to drink coffee, especially as the first cup of the day. It is half café solo and half hot milk and can be served in a small glass or a tall thin glass. Café con leche is best drunk in a traditional Spanish bar where they pour the milk into a metal jug and then with steam from the espresso machine they noisily froth the milk and heat it up so your coffee will be piping hot! Café Bombon – this is a variant on café con leche, it is a small glass containing condensed milk with a café solo slowly poured in. It is then mixed and is very sweet tasting. hen we think of Spanish coffee we tend to think of a steaming mug of coffee with rum or other alcohol and topped with whipped cream, but the Spanish influence on the coffee industry reaches much further than the bar in a ski lodge. Spanish ships carried coffee plants and seeds to many remote areas of the world where coffee was not native but soon became central growing hubs. Descendants of Spanish conquistadors settled in Central and South America where they created huge plantations for growing Spanish coffee. Coffee originally came to Spain with Turkish immigrants. Not much, if any, coffee was actually grown in Spain but they developed a method for roasting that produces very dark, almost black oily beans that make very strong coffee that is known as Spanish Roast, or Dark French Roast. Early Arabic coffee traders tended

22 The Grapevine

Café Americano – similar to a café solo but served in a larger glass or cup with a more water.

to gouge the Spanish coffee merchants on pricing and the result was the highest priced cup of coffee in Europe. Portugal, Spain’s neighbour, had colonies in several coffee growing regions in Africa and sold coffee to the Spain at more reasonable prices, however the quality was not as good and some importers chose to pay the higher prices for the Arabian coffee. Whether the Spaniards were the first to add alcohol to coffee is unknown, but this practice is very common in Spanish coffee houses even in the morning hours so it is possible. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPANISH COFFEE When you are in a restaurant or bar in Spain you can order many varieties and types of coffee. Here are the most common: Café Solo – the most commonly ordered type of coffee in Spain. Café solo is a small and very strong black coffee usually served in a small glass.

Café Con Hielo – mostly drunk in the summertime this is cold coffee otherwise known as iced coffee. The Spanish will serve you with a ‘normal coffee’ and a separate glass with ice and you should then pour your coffee over the ice. Café Sombra or Café Manchado is mostly milk with just a few drops or small measure of coffee. Café Carajillo – this is the coffee that is famous around the world as ‘Spanish coffee’ although as we have already seen – there are so many other types of coffee in Spain apart from the café carajillo. Outside of Spain we know Spanish coffee as a coffee with alcohol – typically rum then topped with whipped cream. In Spain a traditional café carajillo is a café solo with a small measure of brandy. Alternatively you can have rum or whisky instead. If this is done properly the brandy is lit first so the alcohol burns off then the coffee (solo) is added.

To take advantage of Spotify's payment policy, the band’s album included several 30second long tracks. The money made so far will be used to fund a tour mapped around the areas that streamed Sleepify the most. The gigs will be free to attend, the band has said. The band has since added a three-track spoken word album in which they explained the situation and why their silent album had been removed.

pilot who crashed his light plane into a house in Colorado used to own the property, it has emerged. Brian Veatch told KMGH-TV in Denver he once lived in the home, and property records indicated that he sold it in 2003. Mr Veatch told the station that he did not realise the significance of his crash site until someone else pointed it out. He now lives about a mile away. Police say Mr Veatch, who managed to walk out of the wreckage virtually unhurt, may have been attempting to land in a nearby field after an apparent engine malfunction. The veteran firefighter even tried to put out the fire with a garden hose before he was forced away by burning fuel, authorities said. The house in Northglenn was unoccupied at the time of crash. Five teenagers were playing soccer at a nearby track when they saw the plane."We were over at the field when it started going down. We said, 'That plane is way too close,'" said 15-year-old Ryder Munera. Mr Veatch was towing a

Michigan-based band Vulfpeck’s Sleepify album was described as a "clever stunt" by Spotify, which pays out cash based on the number of plays each track gets. The band encouraged followers to play the silent album at night, to help them raise enough money to go on tour. But now Spotify has asked the band to remove the album, claiming it violates the company's terms of content.Keyboardist Jack Stratton said he received a letter from Spotify, adding: "The gist of it was while they enjoyed Sleepify and thought it was funny and clever, it violated their terms

website showing how your street would look if the world’s water levels rose has been launched. The World Under Water site was created to show the effect of a rise of two metres - predicted to become a reality in this century by many scientists. The website allows users to enter an address, then pan around from a single fixed point. It is powered by Google Street View, with a 3D-water overlay. The website is geared towards providing a shock factor rather than actual scientific data That means it does not account for locations' sea level, so the water level appears the same regardless of the location. The Google Maps add-on only works in the Google Chrome browser at the moment. The site was a collaboration between CarbonStory, a crowdfunding platform for climate change projects, and two marketing agencies.

LOS CABALLOS DEL MOSQUIN Another new foal this year.

I

t all began when we bought our house in Spain. The women we bought the house off introduced us to Los Caballos del Mosquin, and I went to visit them and started riding. I loved the nature park, along with the horses, even

though I didn't know much about them at the start. But for the time being, I went back to Denmark. Luckily I visited again in the next holiday. I started taking lessons, and from that point on, I learned

lots. I got to know Eva Maria and the horses well, I visited in every vacation and rode a lot. One day a foal named Fuego was born, and I started wondering what it would be like to get my own horse. I visited the foal, and he grew a lot from day to day. One day Eva Maria told me that soon another foal would be born into this world, and I thought to myself that whoever ended up buying this foal would be very lucky. I never thought that person would be me, but as Farina grew bigger, my family and I decided to buy the foal ourselves. I had already visited him, and we ended up naming him Gavil谩n. We are all looking forward to what the future brings to los Ccaballos del Mosquin. VISIT COMPETA Competa now and then

Size of Municipality: 55 km2 Altitude: 636 m Distance to Malaga: 49 km Distance to coast: 18 km Average sunshine per day: 8.00 hrs Population: 3,800 Inhabitants: Competenos Competa History All tourism slogans and campaigns, some more than others, are inspired by a reality that is more or less verifiable, and the traveller determines the veracity of the slogan during his visit to the area in question. In the case of Cómpeta, no one can doubt that the nickname “Cornisa del Mediterráneo” (“Cornice of the Mediterranean”) fits this locality like a glove. Indeed, the white of the town’s buildings juts out against a landscape that is overlooked by the great heights of the Tejeda and Almijara mountain ranges and stretches out in quest of the Mediterranean over a hilly country covered with the grapevines that yield its famous wine. One of the most representative images that the visitor will retain of La Axarquía will certainly be that provided by this municipality. This is a municipality that, like so many others of the province of Málaga, has no documented history until the fifteenth century, but considering the characteristics of the territoryabundant water, mountain refuges, pleasant temperatures and its status

as a link between the provinces of Granada and Málaga-it seems probable that it contained human settlements in prehistoric times. At this time, though, there are no archaeological finds to support this hypothesis. Cómpeta appears by name in written records for the first time in 1487, when the corregidor (magistrate) of Vélez, which by then was in the hands of the Christians, urged the population to submit to the new owners. This indicates that until that date the place must have been no more than a farming community. The Moriscos (Moors) of Cómpeta, like most of those in La Axarquía, joined those that had already risen up and established strongholds in Peñón de Frigiliana –a place that was linked in the sixteenth century and ever afterwards to the history of La Axarquía by the part it was to play- until the Christian troops overcame the Moorish resistance on 12 June 1569.Although there were numerous casualties among the defenders, some escaped and continued to harass the Christians wherever they least expected it, but not for very long. The town was practically abandoned and was repopulated by long-time Christians from Puente Genil, Estepa, Baena, Seville and other localities that had already been retaken from the

already been retaken from the Muslims. The document from the first marriage contracted between established Christians in the town is preserved in the parish church. The year was 1573. Competa Now Competa is a pretty village which has retained its original Moorish layout and has lots of interesting nooks and crannies, with a good balance of shops, bars and restaurants. The magnificent parish church of La Asuncion, in the main square of Plaza Almijara, was built in the 16th century in Baroque-Mudejar stlye. The area of Competa has one of the best climates in Europe, and the land surrounding the village and down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as avocado, mango and kiwi, all ideally suited to this sub tropical climate. The locally produced Moscatel wine is famous throughout the region. You can visit one of the bodegas and taste it yourself! Competa has a wide variety of bars and restaurants offering excellent tapas and meals at very reasonable price. Turn over to view a map of Competa and its local businesses and amenities,

Liberal drinking laws enable partiers to stay out later than most other world cities and the sheer number of people taking advantage of the nightlife means there are a great deal of options for those wishing to partake. The National Gallery is a great art museum and has some of the finest works in all of Europe collected over a period of hundreds of years. Visit The David Collection art museum which is free to enter, explore The Museum of the Danish Resistance which showcases the Nazi occupation during World War II and 6,000 years or art await you at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum which is home to the biggest collection of Ancient Mediterranean artwork in north Europe. Visit the picturesque Church of Our Saviour, chill out for a few hours in the Frederiksberg Have Park and take in an opera or baller performance at the Copenhagen Opera House.

Athens, Greece Athens is the birthplace of democracy- this sets the bar high in terms of expectations, and Athens certainly delivers on every level! In fact Athens was also the very first European City of Culture when the prestigious title began back in 1985. Luckily due to recent Greek economic turmoil it has never been cheaper to visit Athens. The city has a fantastic tourism industry built around ancient Greek and Roman monuments as well as a night life that doesn’t stop. Athens also has some good Mediterranean cuisine as well as some of the best seafood in all of Southern Europe. Once you get to Athens you’ll be overwhelmed with cultural attractions such as the majestic ruins of ancient Parthenon, the world renowned Acropolis and the Coliseum, three hugely famous tourist attractions and for good reason! Explore the Acropolis Museum, the carefully preserved Temple of Hephaestus and the fascinating Benaki Museum. You can also take tours of the Mediterranean coast in Athens as well as a helicopter ride showing you all of the ancient monuments and theatres. Be sure to be careful when you visit due to poverty in the country. Madrid, Spain Madrid is the largest city and capital of Spain. With about 4 million people living in the city it is a sprawling metropolis that is easily explored thanks to a great public transport system. There are a number of minor and major league soccer teams located in Madrid, so be sure to catch a game when you visit. In fact there are around 72 football clubs based in Madrid, and the three biggest clubs are Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. There are also an abundance of local traditional

events and festivals such as flamenco performances and bull fighting shows; check the local listings on arrival for details. In terms of cultural and historical sights, check out one the biggest art collections in the world at the Prado Museum, browse the postimpressionist Spanish works of art at the Sorolla Museum and enjoy some relaxation time at the Retiro Park, which has beautiful water features amongst the carefully manicured gardens. The city is also known for a burgeoning Molecular Gastronomy craze, so check out some of the high tech restaurants sprinkled throughout the city. Riga, Latvia Riga is sure to attract much acclaim as it prepares to host the European Capital of Culture for 2014, along with Umeå in Sweden. The capital and biggest city in the country, Riga has all the culture and swagger of other European capitals whilst being considerably cheaper. Eastern Europe is generally cheaper than the rest of Europe and Riga is no exception. From hotels to car hire, museums to shopping, everything in Riga is keenly priced. The National Museum has a great deal of Latvian and Eastern European artifacts, and the Grand Opera Hall is home to some of the best Opera in Eastern Europe. Take a walking tour of the Old City, admire the view of historic Riga from St Peter’s Church Tower and there are interesting museums aplenty with the Occupation of Latvia Museum, Ethnographic Open Air Museum and Riga Motor museum all worth a visit. Riga also operates some of the finest casinos in all of Europe and the low cost of business here means you will get great service without spending a bundle.

CREATING HEALTHY HABITS Warmer Weather and Healthy Eating

W

hen the weather begins to stay warm, we naturally become motivated to give our home a spring makeover, organize our workspace and even get a new hairstyle. With this boost of natural energy, why not utilize this time to create a few healthy habits that can benefit you this summer and beyond? When it comes to forming healthy habits, it is much easier to do than you may realise. Pick one to three habits that you’d like to incorporate into your life to start with. Instead of thinking of bad habits to break, think of incorporating habits that will have a positive impact on your life. If there is a bad habit that you know is holding you back, simply choose something you can replace it with. Here are some suggestions to get you started: Increase Exercise Frequency With many people overweight or not feeling as toned as they could be, this is something nearly everyone would like to accomplish. To get started, it is

52 The Grapevine

more important to get in the habit of exercising a couple of times a week with less focus on how long or how intense. Think of it like a muscle; you just have to start using your “exercise muscle” and before you know it, working out will be second nature. Make Your Exercise Effective Once you have established consistency in your exercise frequency, the next step is to create the healthy habit of effectiveness. Instead of just getting yourself to minimally exercise, you’re ready to make the length of your workouts impactful and the type of activity you’re engaging in beneficial. Have a personal trainer take a look at your workout routines to get valuable feedback. Be honest with yourself as well. When you’re done with your workout, do you feel that you gave it your all? Were you moving from one exercise to the next or playing on your phone? It’s such a short part of your day, so make the most of it.

Eat Healthier This is another very popular goal that many people desire to improve in their lives. If you are really committed to making positive changes in your diet, then I encourage you to plan ahead and prepare yourself for success. On the weekend, pick out a few recipes for dinner, write down healthy breakfast, lunch and snack items needed and create your healthy grocery list. Go get everything you need and do not put anything in your cart that isn’t healthy. If it’s in your fridge, you’ll be tempted. When you get home, prep everything that you can and make sure your lunch is packed for the next day. Pull out anything needed for dinner as well. That’s all there is to it. As you can see, creating new healthy habits in your life is a fairly simple task. Keep in mind that it takes about 21 days to create a permanent habit. Make it your goal to stick with your healthy habit for at least a month and without you realizing, it will become part of your lifestyle.

The Caxirola Vs the Diabolica The 2010 tournament hummed to the strains of the vuvuzela, now widely banned. What’s likely to replace it in Brazil as the noisy fan accessory of choice? Prime suspects are the diabolica (a trilling, Belgianmade trumpet compact enough to fit in your pocket) and the caxirola (a grenade-shaped plastic rattle, created by Brazilian pop star Carlinhos Brown). The latter, it is feared, could be used as a missile. But at least you’d hear it coming.

f you need some WOW in your garden, whistle up the cowboys - the stunning cowboy cactus, euphorbia candelabrum or candelabra tree. They´re the ones with arms to hang your hat on. They are true giants and can swagger as well as John Wayne adding real impact to desert/gravel garden schemes or simply as an architectural impact plant, great silhouetted against a white wall and with striking evening time shadows. It also makes a great living fence – animal and human proof with its spiny ribs. Although we may associate it with the mid-west of the United States, it is in fact endemic to the Horn of Africa and is found along the East Africa Rift system as far as Zimbabwe but is particularly common in Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia. Its Latin name, of course, refers to its resemblance to branching candelabras. It´s hard to believe that such a giant belongs to the same family as that red-flowerer so ubiquitous of Christmas time, the poinsettia. Yet if you look at the small yellow flowers that line the edges of the angled branches of the e. candelabrum, you can see their close resemblance to the inner flowers of the poinsettia to which the red bracts are attached. The euphorbia family is large and widespread, numbering some 2000 members. Almost half of the family is found within the continent of Africa and Madagascar.

screes and even sprouting out of termite mounds! In dry climates, it can support up to around 2000 m of altitude. The plant has a long history of usage even though the white latex sap is very toxic. Incidentally, it´s this white sap that often helps identify a euphorbia because they all possess it. It can cause intense irritation to the skin and mucous membranes and can cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes. It is used on arrow heads as a poison. Conversely, in African traditional medicine it has a multitude of uses. The latex, mixed with water, is taken to treat coughs, tuberculosis and rabies; it is applied to wounds, sores and warts, speeding healing; mixed with honey it treats syphilis and gonorrhea and it is combined with other herbs to form a salve for leprosy sufferers. Mixed with fat, it becomes a treatment for malaria and it is added to maize porridge to treat HIV infection. The soft yellow wood of the stems is sometimes used as firewood, though the smoke is irritant, and the light yet durable branches are used for roofing and to make furniture and musical instruments. The massive tough trunk is hollowed out and re-joined to form beehives and the cut branches are planted to form stock-proof barriers. The flowers are very nectar rich though the resulting honey can cause a burning sensation in the mouth. The latex applied to ticks makes them drop off.

carried out during the hottest months for best success. New growth is a sure sign that your cuttings have rooted. Where you have cut the stem on your mother plant, new “arms” will appear. Do remember to wear gloves , above all, avoid contact with the skin and eyes.

These easy-care plants are rarely attacked by euphorbia candelabrum pests or disease but mealy bugs or scale insects can attack. If grown in overly humid conditions and with wet feet, root rot and powdery mildew can be a problem. Before resorting to insecticides or fungicides – which can often harm these plants – try and correct your growing conditions. ES K JO

I was shocked when my adopted daughter told me she was going to marry a witch doctor. "Why do you want to do that?" I asked. "Pwobabwy for financial secuwity," she replied.

I just met someone called William Hill. What are the odds?

Whenever I'm tired, I always pull over and take a half hour nap, just to be on the safe side. A security guard stopped me as I walked out of the supermarket today.

Kids bathed. Kids in bed.

I think it's also fair to say, I'm not the most popular bus driver in town.

Perfect! "Can you open the jacket for me please, sir?" he asked.

Now I can leave the pub.

"Sure," I replied, unbuttoning it all the way down, "There you go." He said, "Thanks, but I meant yours.

My car's fan belt snapped and I had no money on me to buy another. Luckily, I knew how to use the wife's tights to fix it.

Ironing done. Hoovering done. Washing done. Dusting done.

I put them on my head and robbed Halfords.

Sudoko Answers from Page 74

I sent my daughter away to a summer school dedicated to learning about irony. A week later I received a letter in the post saying it was OK but nothing to write home about. Just spotted exactly the same crossword clue for an eleven letter word in two different newspapers. Coincidence ? Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN solution We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver, (Chrysopogon Zizaioides) It is used for stopping erosion and the grass has a huge vertical root system and grows to about 1 meter with roots 3-4 meters deep. The plants are 1 euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 100 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. The roots grow 3-4 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel Take a look at the below interesting links to explain Vetiver Grass in more depth. To view these links please go to our website www.vetiverspain.com Understanding the Vetiver Grass System Vetiver.com Wikipedia.org Vetiver Conference in Columbia 2013 in Spanish and English. TORROX BANS BEACH SPOT SNATCHERS People are to be banned from 'reserving' space on the beach with a towel or sunshade then disappearing for hours on end. Torrox council has banned the practice in an attempt to avoid the usual scene of people turning up early in the morning and reserving the best places on the front line by placing their coolers and shades there and then going off for breakfast and coming back, sometimes up to two hours, later. Mari Nieves Ramirez, councillor for beaches, has commented that this practise was unfair to the majority of beach goers and has got much worse in recent years.Together with the difficulty in cleaning the beaches when there are coolers and towels in the way, has led the council to reach this decision. The police have commented how pleased they are with this decision as they are often called out to settle disputes between beach goers who are arguing about who was where first.
