Editors Note... Last month I participated in a fabulous day out organised by Axareducaion and Competa Hikes. The aim was to teach kids about the wonderful landscape, flora, fauna and wildlife of the area so that it may be enjoyed understood and preserved. Myself and my two kids took part in the walk into the mountains with a local guide to learn more about the area we live in. After the walk we went back to Finca Los Pinos which is Competa Hikes own walking lodge. Here the kids used ther heated pool and paella was served to all. A quiz was hosted by Axareducaion and prizes given to all those who answered the questions.

The kids had a brilliant day out and didn’t want to leave Finca Los Pinos! More walks will be arranged after the hotter summer months and I would definitely recommend the day out it was well organised and in a fabulous setting, so look out for more information later on in the year. The Grapevine Magazine would like to wish both Martin Robinson from Canillas de Albaida and Debi Bond from Competa good luck as this month they will both be raising money for charity through completing personal sporting challenges, Martin by Swimming and Debi with Cycling. More details on both challenges are inside this months magazine

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update
S
pain’s first openly gay referee has walked away from the game, insisting he “cannot take any more”. Jesús Tomillero, who has been a referee from the age of the 11 and was working near the foot of the Spanish football pyramid in the Andalucían regional league, took the decision after he was subjected to abuse following his decision to give a penalty during a match between Portuense and San Fernando Isleño on Saturday Tomillero came out publicly last March as he presented a formal complaint against a kit man from Peña Madridista Linense in the under-19 league in Andalucía, which resulted in a nine-game ban and a €30 fine. He told the newspaper El Español he has been subjected to abuse since and that weekend he reached breaking point. Soon after Tomillero gave a penalty, he says someone from among the visiting supporters shouted: “That’s that poof who was on the telly,” adding, “you can stick the goal up your arse, you f*****g poof”. The referee said the worst thing was that “everyone in the crowd laughed”. He communicated his decision to quit football to the Andalucían football federation soon after.
T
he Florida Supreme Court has dismissed a prosecution appeal against the decision to order a new trial for a Spaniard who has been on death row for 15 years. Pablo Ibar, who has been behind bars for nearly 22 years at Rainford penitentiary in Starke,
8 The Grapevine
Florida, has always maintained his innocence in connection with a triple murder that took place in 1994. In February of this year, the high court ordered a retrial on the basis that mistakes were made during the first trial. The key piece of evidence in the prosecution’s case was a grainy, soundless home security video. With this new decision, 45-year-old Ibar could be transferred from death row “in 15 days at the outside,” according to the Association against the Death Penalty.
T
he EU warned Spain and Portugal to quickly meet the EU’s rules on public deficits but delayed any decision to slap fines against the countries until July. The unexpected reprieve from the EU for Spain delays a potential embarrassing decision against Madrid until after elections on June 26. Inflicting penalities against an EU member state for public overspending would have been an unprecedented step by the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm “We have concluded that this is not the right moment economically or politically to take this step,” European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici told a news briefing in Brussels. For the eighth consecutive year, austerity-weary Spain has overshot its fiscal targets, making it one of the worst performers in the eurozone. Spain’s acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he was eyeing more tax cuts if reelected, in defiance of the EU rules
on running up public deficits. Spain’s deficit came in at 5 percent of gross domestic product last year, far higher than the 4.2 percent initially promised to Brussels and vastly above the 3 percent limit set by EU rules. Madrid has also raised its public deficit target this year from 2.8 percent of GDP to 3.6 percent, which means Spain will once again overshoot the limit set by Brussels. Spain is gearing up for another election on June 26—the second in just six months after bickering parties failed to reach an agreement on a coalition government following inconclusive polls in December.
S
ix donkeys and one mule that made the television news last weekend are now safe in a refuge in Fuente de la Piedra. The organisation, El Refugio del Burrito, took responsibility for the animals this week, following a rescue operation in Vélez-Málaga involving National Police officers and various animal rescue associations. A total of 26 animals, including horses and four dogs, were found to be in “pitiful” condition at a farm in the town. The remaining animals, which weren’t registered with authorities, are now being looked after by a number of animal organisations. The owners of the farm, who don’t have licences to keep horses and donkeys, have been arrested and are being investigated by police.
T
he American hamburger giant McDonalds will return to Torremolinos after a fouryear absence, and the new restaurant is expecting to open its doors to the public in the next few months. The restaurant will occupy the same premises as the old McDonalds, only this time there will be a 93 square metre terrace, instead of the 15 metres available previously. Even though McDonalds has franchises in Playamar and Los Álamos, the centre of the town has been “happy-meal” free for more than four years, following the closure of the previous restaurant in January 2012.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Sandiey's Story
L
ast month I wrote about the five kittens rescued from the rubbish bins in Cómpeta. As you may recall, four of them sadly died and Sandiey, one of our amazing volunteers, was desperately trying to keep the remaining kitten alive. I'm so pleased to be able to let you know that after weeks of tender loving care, Sandiey has saved little “Mono”, who is now strong and healthy and about to go to her new home. Sandiey's job wasn't easy and she'd like to share the story of the kittens with you. I hope you'll take the time to read her words, written below. Sandiey's story It's cruel, inhumane, heartbreaking and unnecessary. I know it's probably been said before but I feel I have to say it again. Putting live animals into rubbish bins and leaving them to die is not the answer to the problem. I believe this creates more problems in the long term. The mother cat suffers, being
14 The Grapevine
distressed by the loss of her litter and she may also develop mastitis as the kittens are unable to suckle on her. This is an extremely painful infection for the mother cat and may even kill her. As for the litter of kittens, they are now without their mother and will have to fight for survival. Someone has to tend to them every two hours to bottle feed them and do all the things the mother would do. As I have been successful in the past, hand-rearing kittens and puppies, I offered to take care of the five kittens that had been found abandoned in the bins. When I received them, they were wet, smelly, ice-cold and dehydrated and it was a battle just to try and raise their body temperatures. Unfortunately, three of the kittens died within twenty four hours and another one died a week later. I felt so sad and a failure as they had been through so much. Luckily, I still had one left that was thriving. She was the smallest of them all, but has proved to be the strongest. So after all the trauma and lack of sleep, I had one success -
“Mono”, a cute little kitten, who's now ready to go to her new home. If the mother of these kittens had been neutered, none of this would have been necessary. Please, if you have an animal that needs neutering and are unable to meet the costs involved, ask Action for Animals to help. It will save so much heartache in the long run. Thank you. Commenting on the survey, British ambassador Simon Manley said: It’s great to see so many Brits saying they are happy and content in Spain as a result of their efforts to integrate into local life. I would definitely urge others to follow their example. If you are settling here, the first and most important thing to do is to register on the padrón. That way you can access the health and social services you may need now or in future. If you fail to register, then you can’t expect support from the Spanish system later. Some of the most tragic cases that we see in our Consulates are the consequences of people having moved to Spain – often years earlier – but not signing up on the padrón or integrating into their local Spanish communities.
DISCOVER THE SECRETS TO A HAPPY LIFE IN SPAIN Ambassador urges British residents to follow the example of those who are most content
S
ome of the secrets to happy living in Spain are revealed in a new survey by the British Embassy on how expatriates adjust to a life in the sun. Integration into the Spanish way of life is the key, the survey reveals. More than half of the British residents who responded say they speak Spanish regularly with friends and neighbours, enjoy Spanish food, use the Spanish healthcare system and employ Spanish tradespeople. The adjective ‘happy’ is the word that they most commonly use to describe their lives in Spain, followed by ‘relaxed’ and ‘content’.
16 The Grapevine
But some Brits admit to getting by without learning Spanish or registering on the padrón, and fail to make Spanish friends or keep up with Spanish news and politics, all things that appear to help others get more out of living in Spain. Almost 1600 people responded to the British Embassy’s ‘Integrometer’ online survey into levels of resident integration. Two-thirds live in Andalucia or the Comunidad de Valencia, where there are some high concentrations of British residents and integration is often low. Further significant numbers live in the Canaries, Murcia, the Balearics, Catalunya and the Madrid region.
Nine out of 10 people say they are registered on the padrón, which implies that one in 10 survey respondents have yet to do so. More than half say they have a Spanish will, and over 50% have a Spanish driving licence. Two thirds are registered for Spanish healthcare, with another 13% having private medical insurance. But an alarming 16% admit they have failed to provide for their healthcare in Spain, leaving them at serious risk of difficulties in the event of an accident or illness. Spanish food proves popular. Nearly a quarter say they eat a Spanish meal every day, and eight out of ten do so at least once a week. Only 6% say they eat a Spanish meal less than once a month. From: British Embassy Madrid

BRITISH CONSULATE MALAGA WARNS TOURISTS OVER CAR CRIME Take care of your passport or face a £100 bill for an emergency replacement, warns the British Consulate in Malaga.
B
ritish Consulate Malaga warns tourists over car crime In Andalucia last year, more than 1,000 British nationals had to stump up for an Emergency Travel Document after their passports were lost, stolen or expired. In one in five cases, their passports had been stolen from cars.
Vice-Consul Rosslyn Crotty said:
To help tackle the problem, car hire companies and the British Consulate have launched a new campaign to reduce theft from vehicles.
Driverscan easily reduce the risk of passport theft, by following these helpful tips:
The Consulate is partnering with DELPASO, Helle Hollis, Arrow Cars, Record Go, All in Car Hire, Centauro and Europcar, in a campaign that builds on a pilot project with DELPASO last year that reduced passport thefts from their rental vehicles by a third. DELPASO placed posters in their customer area and added flyers from the Consulate in customer welcome packs.
18 The Grapevine
“We’re working with the police, car hire firms and the airport to cut the number of stolen passports. But there are very simple steps that Brits themselves can take. Treat your passport like a £100 note – because that’s the cost of a temporary replacement.”
Ÿ Avoid leaving your passport in a
parked car. People hiring cars at the airport often go straight to the supermarket to stock up on groceries. Thieves target vehicles at supermarkets if they look ‘weighed down’ with luggage. Ÿ Be alert to distraction thieves.
They may bump into your car or gesture as if there’s a problem with it. Whilst you’re talking to them, their friend is stealing
your valuables. Ÿ Park your car in a well-lit,
secure car park. This will reduce the risk of passport theft, and improve personal safety when returning to your car at night. David, Matthews, Director of DELPASO Car Hire, said: “We rent cars to thousands of British tourists every year and it’s important to us that they have a safe, enjoyable experience. Working with the British Consulate Malaga helps us to get safety messages across to our customers, who may be surprised at the advice letter from the Consulate in our welcome pack. As a result of the pilot, we’ve seen a reduction in the number of vehicles coming back to us with broken windows or other signs of robbery.”

THE GREAT FORGOTTEN OF SPAIN 1st of May 'Day of the Podenco'
I
fell hook line and sinker in love on my inaugural trip to the mountains of the Axarquía fifteen years ago. It was a brief encounter but is still emblazoned on my heart. The handsome being of my affections was a Podenco Andaluz wandering the streets of a pueblo blanco, abandoned and malnourished. It was my first meeting with this canine breed. With their ridiculously long ears, clown-like
42 The Grapevine
and sensitive behaviour, their gentle nobility is befitting of their resemblance to the Egyptian God, Anubis. But despite their God-like appearance, they are far from revered by their hunterowners. Podencos and Galgos the Spanish greyhound, another hunting breed - are often kept in crowded pens with little food, as it is believed that hunger will make them keener hunters. When they fail to perform sufficiently at the hunt, thousands are abandoned each season. It's
simply easier to “get a new model” for the next year than care for the dogs in the intervening months. They have traditionally never been considered a pet and have no value after they have served their masters as a hunter. The 'lucky' ones, most under four years old, are surrendered to perreras (kill shelters), where most have only a week or so until they are euthanised. Others suffer a range of more barbaric deaths. Since that first encounter, sadly

not much has changed for the Podencos. Only now I wonder if they are abandoned in even larger numbers. Rescuers estimate that between 100,000 and 150,000 Podencos and Galgos are abandoned and killed each year as redundant tools of the hunting fraternity. The Podenco is a breed little known outside the Iberian Peninsula, with close cousins in Ibiza and the Canary Islands. Yet on May Day in the UK, a large pack of Podencos, Galgos, Bodegueros and other Spanish hounds now rehomed in Britain took to the streets of London in a peaceful photo protest. As a result of volunteering as a fosterer for Axarquía Animal Rescue and, happily having a “failed foster” at my first attempt, I now share my life with Oro, a 10 year old Podenco Andaluz who I know with certainty had a miserable start in life from his reaction to gunshots, however distant. We'd only recently driven back from Andalucía to England and had barely “landed”, yet having seen more stray Podencos than ever in and between the hill villages, and hearing the start of unhelpful scare stories of packs of wild dogs, we were keen to do what we could to raise the profile of these mistreated and often misunderstood dogs. And so Oro and I joined his Spanish brothers and sisters on a spring day more reminiscent of the blue skies and sun of Spain than the UK capital. The 1st of May marchers delivered letters of protest and a photocard petition of Spanish hounds now living happily as pets in the UK to the Spanish Embassy and to 10 Downing Street. Each dog had a story to tell of their rescue from situations of abandonment, extreme neglect and significant abuse. Most of the dogs had recovered from terrible injuries and

psychological trauma. Many had been on death row in the perreras having been handed in or rounded up from the streets where they had been dumped. According to data from La F.A.P.A.M, (Federación de Asociaciones Protectoras y de Defensa Animal de la Comunidad de Madrid), a healthy dog is killed every 3 minutes in Spain. The London protest was a Facebook-led campaign initiated by Podenco Alliance and Podenco Support South West. The protest is supported by others from amongst the numerous Spanish and international refuges in Spain, the increasingly vocal group of Spanish activists, film-makers and individual Spanish police and lawyers who are trying to turn the tide of animal cruelty in Spain, and by many of the online community of fundraising and volunteering individuals working to rescue and re-home the dogs. A Facebook group with over 20,500 members, 'The Million Paw March for Justice' was also represented. Navigating the busy London pavements on their march, our affable “hunting pack” drew surprise and admiration from tourists at Parliament Square. Some recognised the dogs from their holidays in Spain where they had seen such strays on the streets, yet so few people know the plight of these hounds outside of Spain. Just prior to the march, the campaign celebrated a major boost with the support of British actress, author and activist Joanna Lumley: “The appalling treatment of Spanish Hunting Dogs strikes a chill to the heart; it is impossible to believe that a country as sophisticated and fine as Spain could tolerate such unforgivable cruelty to living creatures. I add my name to the many who are calling for this inhumanity to be stopped once and for all”
- Joanna Lumley OBE The newly designated 1st of May 'Day of the Podenco' follows on from the 1st of February, designated the Day of the Galgo. February marks the end of the hunting season when most dogs are discarded by their hunterowners. The Galgos are better known than the Podencos due to the practice of hunters hanging Galgos from olive trees and the greyhound rescue groups have taken up their wider plight. The Podencos die more invisibly and in greater numbers. Marches took place concurrently in Manchester, Glasgow, Mijas, and more recently, Berlin. And the protests go on with more marches organised in Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Germany over the coming months. The aim of the campaigners is to help change the root causes that lead to so many animals experiencing the pain of abuse and abandonment. We do not hold a position of judgement but do believe in working collaboratively towards a Spain heralded for its compassion rather than its cruelty. "Our work will focus on education for a cultural shift towards good animal welfare. Education projects will work with Spanish vets and the hunting community on animal health initiatives." - Polly Mathewson (The Podenco Alliance). We wait with hope for a response from the Spanish government, and the UK government, as a start to acknowledging the Great Forgotten of Spain: the Podencos, and their fellow hunting breeds. coming to see him at work. Over the last 13 months Ali OLi has developed hugely whilst still providing food and drink in comfortable surrounds at excellent prices. It is also well known for its music nights and themed evenings. Also, once a month there is a Quiz and Open Mic night organised by residents in the area. Christian has been extremely pleased by the support he has had from the locals and would like to thank them all for their business and help.
AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN FROM ALI OLI Ali Oli celebrates its first anniversary.
A
li Oli located just off Plaza Vendimia, Competa has now been open just over a year. They celebrated their first anniversary last month with tapas, music and dancing and great fun was had by those that attended, as shown by the photos apposite! Ali Oli is run by Christian who is a renowned chef in the area. Christian started his career in London in 1976 and has spent the years to date working in various restaurants learning new skills and culinary creations. He has gained experience form around the world namely London at the Peppermint Park Restaurant, provided pacific rim food during his time in Australia
54 The Grapevine
and of course more recently in Europe . Christian moved to Competa in 1997 and worked in El Pilon Restaurant which he then took over as both head chef and owner. It was at his time at El Pilon where he gained experience over what the tourists wanted to eat and enjoyed providing food that was different to what was readily available in the area. His new venture ALI OLI bar and restaurant is a more relaxed environment. He described it as the bar he would want to relax in, if he wasn’t cooking that is! He has named his bar after his children Alexandra and Oliver although they are now all grown up, when they visit Competa; they do enjoy
Moving forward Christian is bringing in pre order platters for 2 people or more, examples of these are the Seafood platter, Stuffed Crown of lamb, Nut Loaf and Beef Wellington. Just pop inside and ask for the full pre order menu and then book a table! Ali Oli will be open for lunches too from now onwards and also the healthy Juices and smoothies made to order are also back for the summer. A favourite for the locals over the winter has been the Ali Oli Sunday Brunch menu which will also continue over the summer... this is a definite must if you haven’t had Sunday brunch yet! Christian explained parties have become extremely popular and successful. Bespoke parties have been organised for locals and he wants to encourage more people to use Ali Oli as a party venue. He particularly enjoys the challenge of discussing menus and creating food for an individual party. However it’s not just the food it’s the overall ambience the he believes can be created at Ali Oli. Whether it’s through music or with a band or naturally through the return of themed parties which seem to have made a comeback, it can all be done at Ali Oli. See advert on page 56

White wines need to be chilled in the ice bucket between 20-25 minutes and should be served immediately after opening. Red wine should be chilled for about 15-16 minutes and they to should be served immediately upon opening. Another easy and helpful way to chill wine to the right temperature is to have a wine cellar. You can get a wine cellar for a few hundred dollars that can hold about 24 bottle of wine or spend a lot more and get one that can hold an entire collection. This option is not for everyone but something to consider. On a wine cellar you set the temperature of the wine to the exact temperature you wish to store it at and when you are ready to drink simply uncork, decant and enjoy.
SERVING WINE? Temperature does matter
I
f wine is not served at the right temperature it could severely hinder the taste and experience of the drink. When wine however is served at the right temperature the wine gains a balance and a taste that is unmatched. Perfect is the way that wine should be and most often times our wine is not perfect. In fact to often its far from it and many people really never know the difference. Red wines are best served just slightly below room temperature or around 67-68 degrees. When red wine is served too warm it develops a strong alcohol taste and the real taste of the wine has all but vanquished. White wines are served best just slightly below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and when cooled properly it has a fresh clean fruit flavour that seems to be full of life. If white
58 The Grapevine
wine is chilled incorrectly it will taste weak and lifeless and as though the flavour has faded and dulled. The easiest and fastest way to serve wine at the right temperature isn't putting it in the freezer for 10 minutes as some would have you believe. Please do not kill your wine by freezing it unless you really want to see all the flavour wave on its way out the door. What you should do is fill an ice bucket equal parts full of water and ice. Then simply submerge the bottle of wine into the bucket just to the base of the neck. If you do not have an ice bucket I really suggest getting one they are very inexpensive and well worth it. If you are having dinner with guests this weekend and don't have one then just grab a large bowl and use the steps above to chill the wine to the right temperature.
A very important tool to have especially when you are entertaining guests is a long probe wine thermometer. When you un-cork the bottle of wine you can insert the thermometer to see how close to being ready to serve it is. Once its ready you can either serve the wine in a decanter or pour for your guests. Once you have plenty of practice you will no longer need a thermometer as you'll be able to tell when your wine is cool enough by the feel of the bottle. I like to compare this to learning how to grill a steak. When you grill a steak for the first time its never right and the way you want it. After you've grilled steak for a few years you'll be able to serve it to that perfect shade of pink you like time after time. Cooling wine is the same way(minus the fire and charcoal) tools will help but eventually you won't need them anymore and will serve the perfect bottle of wine every time. Michael Brown

THE SPANISH HEALTH SYSTEM AND CANCER CARE The Health System and how to access it.
T
his guide has been put together by the volunteers of the Competa Cudeca Cancer Care Support Group (CCCCSG) and to the best of our knowledge reflects the situation in Spain at present.
Cancer can be a lonely place whether you are living with it or know someone who is. This guide aims to steer you through your journey with advice, hints and tips from exprts working in this area and those who have experienced treatment first hand.
The Grapevine Magazine has kindly agreed to publish this guide over the next three months. The first part covers access to the Spanish Health System, the second part will cover Medical Problems and Cancer Treatment and the final part will cover At Home living with an illness along with a list of useful contact numbers.
PART ONE - The Health System and how to access it.

The European Health Insurance Card EHIC that replaced the E111 in 2006 entitles holders to free medically necessary/emergency treatment due to illness or accident whilst temporarily visiting Spain. For more detailed and up to the
minute information on this go to https://www.gov.uk/guidance/heal thcare-in-spain IMPORTANT NOTE - You can be billed for non-urgent treatment in Spanish Social Security hospitals if you do not come under the category described above. Those permanently residing in Spain, aged under 65 and not contributing to Social Security are not entitled to free healthcare and will be required to return to their country of residence or be required to hold Private Health Insurance cover (see exceptions below; Who else is eligible for

Social Security). In extreme cases where it is evident that a person is without finance or access to financial assistance, then you may approach the British Consulate who may then help with repatriation to the UK. Ex-Military Service Personnel can contact the British Legion for assistance. Those 65 and over who are citizens of the European Economic Area, registered with their local Town Hall as a resident need to register with the Spanish Health System and will then be provided with a TARJETA SANITARIA INDIVIDUAL by the JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA (Health Card). The husband/wife/nominated beneficiary will also be provided with a card even if aged below 65. In this instance, it is important to note that should the main card holder pass away, the additional card provided to the wife/husband/beneficiary will be withdrawn and you will need to reapply under your new status. Who else is eligible for Spanish Social Security (SS)? All people over the age of 65 who are citizens of one of the European Economic Area (registered appropriately)or who are paying into the Spanish Social Security system, (working either contracted or selfemployed) or a beneficiary of someone with SS. The process starts at the local Oficina de Extranjeros, Police Station Torre del Mar to obtain an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and a certificate of residency Tarjeta de Residencia (residency card)*. With these two documents you will need to visit the INNS office in Vélez Málaga (Avda. Toré Toré, 5 Torre del Mar 29740 VELEZ MALAGA Tel: 952543400) with proof of age – passport; then

register with a Doctor at the Local Health Centre/Consultorio. *You may also require a Certificado de Empadronamiento. When is it needed? The use of the Certificado de Empadronamiento varies greatly from one administrative region to another. In Madrid, Andalucía, Valencia (among others) it is needed in order to complete numerous actions. However, this is not consistent across all regions of Spain. The Certificado de Empadronamiento may be required to achieve the following: ··Buy or sell a car ··Register a child in school ··Apply for the NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) ··Apply for residency (Residencia) ··Get married ··Vote ··Apply for a local health insurance card. How to Register In most towns, registration for the Empadronmiento must be made in person at the town hall or neighbourhood administrative office (Junta Municipal). In some areas registration can be made online. Obtaining the Certificado de Empadronamiento is a fairly quick and easy process. The documents required to register include: ··A completed application form (available at the office where registration is being made) ··Identification such as a passport, and a photocopy; if registering as a family, ID is needed for each individual ··Proof of address, such as a utility bill, rental contract agreement or copies of the property title deeds (escritura) There is a new special arrangement whereby for a
payment of 60€ a month, people under the age of 65, can contract to be covered by Spanish Social Security; they have to have been registered as a resident in Spain for more than a year. See more to follow. Special agreement for Spanish healthcare: Convenio Especial Spanish authorities offer a special agreement pay-in scheme, known as Convenio Especialavailable to those who may have issues accessing free Spanish healthcare. It is essentially a public health insurance scheme which provides cover in exchange for a monthly fee that is calculated on a number of factors. The previously announced package consisted of a monthly fee of EUR 60 for those aged 65 or under, while those over 65 must pay EUR 157, although variations may exist between regions. However, prescription costs and health transport services do not form part of the cover nor health transport. The scheme is currently being rolled out in a number of regions with a view to being available throughout the country. Those who have residence status prior to 2012 and earn less than 100.000€ a year and can prove that they have no other health care cover may be eligible for Spanish Social Security. Next month Medical Problems and Cancer Treatment. CCCCSG Group meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday of every month and everyone is welcome; patients, family and friends. For more information email cindyjone19@hotmail.com Debi Bond .
Look out for details coming soon of Debi Bonds epic mountain cycle challenge raising funds for Cudeca. Supported by Karen Parnel of Chili Leisure she will attempt to cycle from Algarrobo to Competa in June.

a Gelateria ice creams are prepared in Competa and are 100% homemade. It is the spirit of the Competa people who are authentic and proud of their local traditions, which inspires us to produce a product with the same characteristics using quality products, selected raw materials, milk and fresh cream, seasonal fruits, pasta and pure nuts. They are healthy and natural. Our ice cream, cakes, sweets and fruit juices are made following the Italian tradition in gelato and pastry as Italy is the country of origin of one of the owners of the Gelateria. We would also like you to remember a curious fact about Cómpeta which means "Crossroads" or "Meeting of roads" and owes its name to the period of Roman occupation. So we want to thank the people of Cómpeta who embrace the Italian Ice cream with local flavours:
Lemon Sorbet: lemon taste using local. It does not have gluten, milk or colourings. Very fresh.
Cómpeta honey: honey ice cream 100% Competeña, with a soft and delicate flavour a mixture of honey and milk, with whole toasted almonds. It has no gluten.
We have also made Cómpeta olive oil ice cream and although we don't sell it to the public it is offered as an original gastronomic product for restaurants and catering.
Prickly Pear Sorbet: A fresh ice cream made with figs from our field .It has to be collected very early in the morning so as not lose its flavour. Its colour varies depending on the prickly pear we have put in each production. It has no gluten or milk.

Swimming is considered a useful cardiovascular exercise, this is because we are moving against the water’s resistance (over ten times that of the air). Swimming strengthens the lungs and the heart. It also helps reduce stress. Swimming works out all of our body’s major muscles. An hour of vigorous swimming can burn up to 650 calories. It also burns off more calories than biking or walking. Water’s buoyancy make swimming the suitable exercise for physical therapy and rehabilitation as well as for those who seeks a low-impact exercise. In the U.S. 65% of people there dont know how to swim. Swimming is the third mostpopular activity or sport in the U.S (after walking and gardening/yard work). The first recorded swimming races were actually held in 36 B.C. in Japan. In the late part of the 19th century, swimming became an amateur sport, and in 1896 it became a part of the Olympic Games. Swimming in the Olympics started as a men’s event only, and in 1912 women were then be able to participate in this sport. An Englishman Captain Matthew Webb is the first man who crossed the English Channel swimming from England to France in 1875. Gertrude Ederle is the first woman who swam the English Channel in 1926 and she was actually a teenager at that time.
The average person produces about 25,000 quarts of saliva in her or his lifetime – this is enough spit to fill two swimming pools. The turbopump on the Space Shuttle main engine could drain an average-sized swimming pool in just 25 seconds. An Olympic size pool can hold between 700,000 to 850,000 gallons of water. The Titanic was the first ocean liner to have a gym and a swimming pool. Clear pool water does not mean clean pool water. Swimming is a healthy and fun activity. However, breathing, swallowing, or having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools would spread illnesses. Owning a swimming pool is terrific, but lets not forget that they are also dangerous. About 300 children under age 5 die every year and about 2,000 other children visit hospital emergency rooms for submersion injuries each year. According to Guinness World Records, Algarrobo, Chile is the place where you can find the world’s largest swimming pool – the pool is called San Alfonso del Mar Seawater pool. The longest swimming pool can be found in Casablanca Morocco. Susan Wong

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Don´t be a Water Wimp! rought – the word makes the blood run cold, sends shivers down the spine and yet the word is dripping from everyone's lips this year! In Cómpeta, as many of you will be aware, water restrictions have been in place for some time now so, as gardeners, what is best to do, how can we save our gardens?
D
and, of course, pollution have all taken their toll. Historically, nations with water had power and wealth; that still stands true today. Elaborate water distribution systems have made water available to a large proportion of human society, especially in the so-called developed world but, overall, demand still exceeds supplies.
I think the most important thing is don´t panic, but plan. You might ask what use is forward planning when we are in a drought situation now! But look at the graph produced by the Junta de Andalucía. You´ll notice a couple of things immediately. Firstly, that for the last 5 years, the trend is all on the dry side; yes, there a couple of wet hiccups but the predominant pattern is to desert-like conditions. Now we've all been warned of climate change, global warning etc; whether you believe it all or not, it is a fact that, globally, humanity is facing a water crisis. Population explosions, depleted water to wells and aquifers because of bad management, subsequent salt water intrusion
We shouldn´t confuse the term 'drought' with our normal 4 months or so of dryness in the summer – this is a normal and regular Mediterranean weather pattern and, although we might find it too hot, most true Mediterranean-type plants are well equipped to cope with it. True drought is when winter rainfall is so low that water tables do not replenish. We can´t, of course, predict with any accuracy how climate change will affect us but it seems that we need to be increasingly careful with water and treat it as a limited resource. Just because we can – usually – turn the tap on and there is water, doesn´t mean we should be profligate with it.
84 The Grapevine
Most of us overwater our gardens; the lushness of lawns and tropicaltype plantings, for instance, should become an anachronism here in Southern Spain. Most northern Europeans try to impose northern European gardens into a southern Spain setting; it´s wasteful, labour and water intensive and inappropriate. I´d stress again that Mediterranean climate plants thrive with winter rain alone and there is a wealth of them to choose from. In times of real drought, a soaking with grey water from the house will keep them going. Remember that times of drought are, inevitably, followed by deluge so you will not need to support them for long. So let's rethink our gardens and use some of these pungent, sturdy natives – the greys and silvers, leathery leaves, needle leaves, succulents. Let´s use these hard times to think anew and create a sustainable relationship with the environment. Remember that Mother Nature has a plant (or several!) for every place – no matter how inhospitable. All we need to do is use that wisdom.

Most gardeners design their gardens by grouping contrast plants, leaf form and texture, colour, size etc. Rethink; it is just a mind change and it does not have to be boring, far from it! Carve your garden into three zones. Zone one will be immediate to the house, your patios and swimming pool area (if you must have a swimming pool) and, perhaps, vegetable plot; this will be the area of heaviest water usage. Keep it streamlined; don´t have too many fussy plantings. A few large leaved plants can look wonderfully effective. Hibiscus, canna lilies, brugmansia, calla lilies, zamias etc. Or use real toughies like yuccas, dragon trees, cordylines, kalanchoe beharensis – they are not all prickly/spiky, need no watering and are hugely effective. And, remember, because it´s close to the house, you can more easily use your grey water here, when necessary. By the way, I´m often asked about grey water; is it safe to use on our plants? Be careful about it; don´t use bleach or any caustics but a bit of shower gel or shampoo won´t really hurt most plants. Better still, convert and use organic body and cleaning products; healthier for you and your plants. Zone two is intermediate water usage. Into this area will fall your fruit orchard which will need some water but not excessive amounts. Zone three is a no-water area – and there are hundreds of planting options. Visualise Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme; add in unthirsty plants such as artemisia, perovskia, cistus, helianthemum, euphorbia, echium, coronilla, polygala, hypericum, bearded iris, ceanothus, cypress, myrtle, alyogyne, chamelacium, rhododanthemum, many salvias, verbascum, melaleuca, erigeron – the list is long. Add in some spring flowering South African bulbs for splashes of colour. Many trees and climbers, once established, will survive too. And of course, there are countless succulents and cacti that you can use too. This sort of planting will be at least as
To advertise call 637 028 873
interesting and good looking as thirstier things and they not only don´t need irrigation, they will probably die if you give them too much. Any new plantings you make should be made to fight; even in times of plenty make them work a little. A plant
that has to send down roots to look for water will always be stronger than, paradoxically, one that is spoilt with water every day. Their roots will stay up at the surface, where they burn easily, they never anchor well and never find minerals and nutrients that are down below the top soil. If you´ve been spoiling your plants, don´t just suddenly stop watering – that will almost certainly kill them. They have become addicted to your splash of water daily and you need to wean them off it bit by bit. Now back to immediate things you can do. Make an emergency plan for if things get really desperate – you´ll feel better for being organised. Logically, you don´t want to lose trees and large shrubs which have taken years to grow so they will take priority on water. Do remember though that many will be so well-established that they will probably survive anyway. Small thirsty plantings such as annuals and even your lawn are fairly minor in terms of cost and subsequent replacement – if you must. If push comes to shove, let them go. You´ll be
surprised, anyway, how often gramma type grass will bounce back from what seems to be total death. Group pots together; they create their own protection with a mini-climate and are better able to survive than alone exposed and open to all the elements. Mulch plants in the ground, especially if we get a rain shower to help retain moisture. Where possible, protect your plants from drying winds; even a bit of netting thrown over them will help. Do not fertilise during hard times; the last thing you want is to encourage lots of lush young, tender new growth that will frazzle up easily. The more mature leaves are toughened and acclimatised, much more able to cope. Chemical fertilisers, especially, can burn plants if they are not well watered in. Let´s not be lazy; let´s not give up. It only needs some planning and forethought. If you are not sure about your plantings, then visit your local garden centre for advice. At Viveros Florena we will always be happy to advise and guide you through suitable plantings. Let´s not be water wimps! Viveros Florena – Probably the best little garden centre in Andalucía! THE BIG SWIM A local man is planning to make a big splash for charity. Martin Robinson, from Canillas de Albaida, is undertaking a marathon swim to raise money for cancer charity Cudeca. On June 4th he will attempt to swim over 200 lengths of Competa pool. Last year Martin was diagnosed with bowel cancer and after a major operation and gruelling chemotherapy he wants to raise money for the charity. "Cudeca has helped support me in so many ways, " he said. " The swim is just a small, personal way to thank everyone who has helped me.” "I have always been so fit, active and healthy. Therefore it was a huge shock to discover I had cancer, " he explained . "Volunteers and health professionals from Cudeca were always on hand to offer help and advice." The charity event is taking place with the backing of Competa Town Hall. Officials have provided a lifeguard and are allowing the swimming pool to remain open in the afternoon for the sponsored swim. Everyone is invited to cheer Martin on and sponsor him by signing the forms that will be circulated by a team of helpers. Come along to Competa pool on Saturday 4th June from 10am

Maybe this can help me a little to understand the people and challenges I will find on my way. I will put all my effort in doing so.I would like to ask all of you for your support: my group of councilors from the Partido Popular, the public workers, and to all the people from Cómpeta, whatever their political preference. It´s a great honor to me as well as a great responsibility, to become your mayor.” Thank you very much, Obdulio Perez Fernandez, Alcalde de Cómpeta.
José Luis Torres Gutierrez: “Everything in life has a beginning as well as an end, from the day we were born. For me it´s an end of full and exclusive dedication to the beautiful village of Cómpeta, where I have felt such great support and affection from so many people. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported and helped me, because together we have worked to make this village a better place. When your work takes away your health and peace of mind; it´s time to make changes. I feel confident in leaving this village in good hands, and ask all of you to support and help them the way you did with me. A very warm hug and thank you.”
