It’s a month until the kids finish school, which this year is on the 23rd June, I cant wait! No more getting up early then shouting at the kids to make sure they get ready and leave on time for school. No more homework or studying to help them with, which stresses out both myself and my daughter. I am looking forward to the long summer holidays with weekends at the beach and afternoons by the pool and BBQ’s in the evening. We will also be making it back to the UK over the summer to see family and I will be taking the kids to London to be a tourist for the day! Here in Spain there is plenty to do over the summer holidays, water parks, different beaches to visit and of course the various ferias and fiestas held over the coming months are always fun. More locally there is always live music playing in various bars and restaurants which can enhance your ‘al fresco’ dinning experience. Take a look at our ‘What’s on Guide’ and local gigs section on page 87 to see what’s happening in your area. This month we focus on the Tuesday Trapiche Farmers market again with some new advertisers please see pages 26 and 27. It is a lovely venue offering teas and coffees with plenty of quality stalls to wander around. There is a range of items for sale from fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan products, clothes and even diamonds! Every Tuesday 10.00 until 2pm it’s well worth a visit. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor.

berdrola, the Spanish energy giant, allegedly worked to alter the price of electricity and make “an illicit profit of €20 million” during the winter of 2013, coinciding with a cold spell. The accusation has been brought by anti-corruption prosecutor Antonio Romeral in a complaint lodged against the company with the Audiencia Nacional, Spain’s central High Court.
A NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update
T
he number of accidents on Spain’s non-urban roads involving cyclists doubled between 2009 and 2015: from 1,082 to 2,013. What’s more, the trend is reflected within cities, where over the same period the number of accidents grew from 2,387 to 5,173. At the same time, the number of people taken to hospital after a road accident involving bicycles rose from 489 in 2009 to 652 in 2015, a 33% increase. Taking into account the year 2016 and the figures so far this year, the DGT says more than 400 cyclists have been killed on Spain’s roads since 2008. The latest victims joined the statistics last month, when a drunk driver in Valencia ran into a group of six cyclists, killing two on the spot and seriously injuring three more. One of the latter died of his injuries four days later. The surge is due in large part to greater numbers than ever of cyclists on Spain’s roads, says Luis Montoro, Professor of Road Safety at the University of Valencia. “But in the face of this trend, we come up against a lack of strategies and institutional measures,” he warns. Among these is a lack of infrastructure: “particularly on main roads,” and not enough road safety awareness campaigns in the media.
8 The Grapevine
A survey run by insurance company Axa and bike safety watchdog Ponle Freno showed that 30% of cyclists admit to not knowing the rules of the road, and this in a country where more than a million bikes are now being sold each year, according to the sector’s association.
S
panish lawmakers have voted in favor of moving the remains of dictator Gen. Francisco Franco from the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum in central Spain, a measure that has long been rejected by the conservative governing Popular Party. The 198-1 vote Thursday with 140 abstentions puts no obligation on the government. But it has reopened debate relating to one of Spain's most painful episodes, the 1936-39 Civil War and its aftermath. The mausoleum, located close to Madrid, is seen by many as a relic of Spain's dictatorial past. The lawmakers also called for funds to remove remaining dictatorship symbols and to set up a commission to investigate the estimated 115,000 people still missing since the conflict, a recommendation backed by the United Nations.
14,000 kilo batch of contaminated tuna has prompted the Junta de Andalucia to issue health warnings across the region after consumers fell ill in Cordoba, Granada, Jaen, Malaga and Sevilla.. The Andalucian Ministry of Health has reported more than 50 cases of histamine poisoning since May 5, all caused by fresh tuna originating from Garciden, an Almeria-based supplier. Symptoms include a sore throat, headaches, hot flushes, sweating, nausea and vomiting. An official statement advises consumers to avoid eating tuna purchased between April 25 and May 5, some of which may still be on sale. Six batches with barcodes ending in 170501, 170502, 170503, 170504, 170505, and 170506 have been removed from the market. Although tuna is naturally rich in histamine, poor hygiene during production, particularly exposure to high temperatures, may lead to a dangerous spike which cannot be removed by cooking or freezing.
G
reater growth, less unemployment, a lower deficit. The Spanish economy is starting to pull out of the Great Recession following a lost decade, according to Brussels’ revised forecast for Spain, released last month. According to European Union leaders, the Spanish economy will grow faster than other member states, at a pace of 2.8% in 2017 (half a percentage point more than in the previous forecast) and 2.4% in 2018.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Happy News
F
irstly, I thought you'd like to know what happened to some of the abandoned pups I've written about in previous articles. So here's an update.
The two pups found in a box by the bins in Sayalonga back in January have happily both found their forever homes. One remains here in the Cómpeta area and the other has found his new home in the UK. The five pups discovered tied up in a sack by the side of the road and brought into our shop last February have now all gone to their new homes in Belgium. We are eternally grateful to Anna, Janet and Joy, who helped foster these pups while they were at their most vulnerable, to Julia Ruane who has fostered so many pups I've almost lost count and to Elsie Mathiesson for arranging the rehoming of the pups that went to Belgium. Thank you all for giving them the hope of a bright future after such a dreadful beginning! Our Coffee Morning on 26th April raised an incredible €828.13. It was a well-attended event and the pies and cakes donated to us for the day were absolutely fantastic. We'd like to thank El Pilon for allowing us to

host the event at their lovely restaurant and to all the wonderful people who made such amazing cakes and pies. Special thanks to Kevin Deavin for operating the raffle, to Julie, Steven, Phil, Lars and Jolene for serving the goodies and of course, a massive thanks to our own Julia Ruane for organising such a successful event. The monthly Action for Animals Quiz is once again up and running, now at Bar Cerezo, Canillas de Albaida and is proving to be extremely successful. Last month's quiz raised a wonderful €145. A huge thank you to our Quizmistress Megan Furniss, who makes Bamber Gascoigne look like Keith Chegwin. And let's not forget Megan's husband Pete, who lugs the heavy sound system into the venue every month. What an excellent team! If you haven't already been to one of Megan's quizzes, come along to the next one in June. Follow us on Facebook for the date or keep an eye on Dígame. And finally, for those of you who don't already know, a quick reminder about how the Action for Animals voucher system works. If you're on a low income and need
financial help for neutering your pet or other vital treatment, the first step is to come into our shop and complete an application form for financial assistance. Each application is assessed individually and once your form has been processed, which usually takes 24 hours, we will issue you with a voucher for either of the vets here in Cómpeta. We pay each vet at the end of every month, so if you don't give the vet a voucher at the time of your appointment we will be unable to help. Vouchers are vital! Have a happy June everybody and thanks for reading! NEW OPENING HOURS: Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. A CHOCOLATE A DAY Can it keep you healthy?
I
t is widely believed that eating dark chocolate is good for cardiovascular health. Some health and lifestyle experts, however, emphasized that there is no evidence for this fact. Recently, the British Journal of Nutrition published a new study, which supports regular consumption of chocolate. Before changing your diet to eat more chocolate and sweets, you should understand that this study is published based on clinical observation and available data. According to the new study, the researchers from Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), university of South Australia, university of Warwick Medical School and university of Maine suggested that consuming a small amount of chocolate every day can help to prevent insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The study considered the data of 1,153 people between the ages 18 and 69. When comparing the health of various participants, the research group found lower insulin resistance and healthy liver enzymes in those who
20 The Grapevine
claimed that they ate around 100g of chocolate every day. Insulin resistance is one of the very important factors determining the onset of cardiovascular diseases. The academic researchers proposed the hypothesis that chocolate can be useful for insulin sensitivity and liver enzymes. This study is conducted rigorously, noting down the lifestyle and diet preferences of the participants. The consumption of tea and coffee is also monitored. Both tea and coffee contain polyphenol which is useful to accelerate cardiometabolic effects of chocolate. The visiting academic at the University of Warwick Medical School, and Scientific Director of department of population health at LIH, Prof Saverio Stranges said that cocoa based products can be suggested as dietary recommendation to improve cardio health and metabolism. However, he added that the results are simply observatory and more robust evidence based trials are required. He also emphasized that
natural cocoa product is entirely different from highly processed commercial chocolates. Among those who participated in the study, 80% of the individuals said that they eat at least 24.8g of chocolate every day. These people were active, young and had higher educational status compared to those who did not eat chocolate regularly. The principal investigator of the study, Dr. Ala's Alkerwi said that the people who consumed chocolate had significant sociodemographic profiles, better health access and healthy lifestyle habits. This can also be an important contributor for the reaction of the body to insulin and liver biomarkers. Researchers have agreed that randomized control studies and additional observational research are required to truly understand how chocolate is useful in reducing insulin resistance and preventing disorders related to cardiometabolism. WRITING AXARQUIA Creative Writing and Walking Retreat, 4-9 September, 2017
A
re you a writer who loves to walk, or a walker who loves to write? Are you feeling stuck and looking for ways to get started with your writing or hungry to re-kindle your creativity? Then a Writing and Walking Retreat in September might be just what you're looking for. The retreat is a collaboration between Cómpeta Hikes and Writing Axarquía, two local enterprises who have both been inspired into being by the incredible location.
childhood memories of Africa, where they both spent idyllic childhoods. Their love of nature and adventure, good food and wine and the warmth of the people all combined to make a Finca in the parque natural, just outside the gently buzzing Pueblo Blanco of Cómpeta, the obvious choice when they were looking to escape the rat-race and fulfill a dream of creating a walking lodge and holiday business.
When Fi and Andy first visited Cómpeta in 2013, it was for a fortnight's relaxation, following an epic 5-week cycle ride from Lands While it's safe to say that their End to Shetland, carrying a guitar! reasons for coming to this area of They were expecting sunshine Spain are different, there's clearly and mañana, but they also found something special about the inspiration and a slice of paradise. Now, four years on, Cómpeta Hikes is a thriving business. The Finca is always busy and many visitors to the area have been bewitched by the landscape and everything the Axarquía has to offer, through carefully chosen guided walks and cultural activities. A walking club for locals, including hikes for children and families, has also given back to the community, something that is very important to Sarah and David. Meanwhile, on the other side of the valley, Andy and Fi have finished books, completed Masters degrees in Creative Writing, and, bringing their coaching and writing skills to Cómpeta, have established Writing Axarquía, to offer creative writing classes, workshops and retreats to locals and visitors alike. Teaming up with Cómpeta Hikes to create a Writing and Walking retreat was an obvious next step. Finca los Pinos has already been successfully running combination holidays in partnership with others,

What is certain is we need to stop our dependency on fossil fuels and dramatically reduce greenhouse gases to maintain the climate balance. The world population is rising fast mainly in the emerging nations like India, and China and many African countries. And the world's population is growing rapidly alongside the movement of people towards cities to find employment. These billions will want all the trappings of civilisation, technology and comfort in the future which means an increase in the demand for fridges, freezers, and TV's, cars, decent housing and of course energy. These people will become the new "consumers" in their billions and they will also want food How they should start saving the world: and more water which could become limited to those that can ear Grandchildren; You equilibrium' as it is called. afford it unless technology, and must be confused about water distribution and farming why scientists keep Our atmosphere forms a very thin saying that the world is getting blanket (only about 100 miles thick) practices adapt to meet this demand. However, I suspect that most of the "haves" will not do this on the basis that they would want the fittest, richer and more powerful to survive as the "have nots" migrate in their millions towards the more affluent regions away from the hotter barren areas of the globe that have become uninhabitable. So, this is not a great future for you and your children's children. You need to think (with grand parents and parents help) about what you are going to do about it now. The good news is that there is time to act before things deteriorate to the point of no return. The process is slow at the moment but time is running out. Now is the time to come up with solutions on the basis of "think local" (do things at home and in you street and town, and as you get older) "act globally". Remember: Reduce greenhouse gases. Stop using any fossil based fuels and those that produce Co2/N2o Recycle as many things as possible. Reuse as much as possible. Invest in green technology. Go for sustainable options. When you come to vote you might consider political parties with a high commitment to the above. Your Gran and Grandpa today can only do their best with the little time they have left. They can only draw your attention to the possible disaster looming and can only throw down the challenge for you to save the world. Let's hope that you will put down your smart phones for five minutes and listen. Then pick them up again and Google; "50 ways to help save the planet. Vanity Fair". A good place to start. They can then help you get on with it while they are still here. Martin Robinson

LA BATALLA DEL VINO The Haro Wine Festival
E
ach year between the 28th and 30th of June, thousands of thirsty locals and a handful of lucky (wine addicted) tourists climb a mountain in La Rioja, Spain, and throw the sweet red liquid all over each other. This is St Peter’s Feast Day, though you’d be lucky to find a local who could tell you so, and the event is known around these parts as La Batalla de Vino de Haro- or better known as the Wine Fight. Held in the historic, picturesque town of Haro, in the Rioja region, about 100 kilometres south of Bilbao, thousands of people turn up for one of Spain’s most exuberant festivals every Saint Peter’s Day. Haro is in what is now known as Rioja Alta, where about 40% of the region’s vineyards can be found, and is a town totally devoted to the grape. The Museo del Vino and the number of bodegas open to the public all give evidence of just how vital wine production is to the
62 The Grapevine
town’s economy. And the Batalla del Vino is just the ultimate celebration of wine. The Haro Wine Festival is known in Spanish as ‘La Batalla del Vino’ – the wine battle. It involves thousands of people soaking themselves, and everybody around them, in red wine that will ruin clothes for ever. Then rushing off to run around a bull ring chasing frolicking heifers and then finally going off to a party. That’s La Batalla del Vino in a nutshell. It all evolved, apparently, from a land dispute between two neighbouring towns, Haro and Miranda De Ebro, dating back to the tenth century. The battle itself seems to have started at the beginning of the twentieth century. Nowadays, the town of Haro, its 10,000 inhabitants joined by many, many visitors, begins to get the festivities under way a week before the battle itself. Visitors can look forward to the fact that Haro is renown for the quality of its tapas,
as well as it being in the centre of Spain’s major Rioja-producing area. On the big day itself, a parade of horsemen leads everyone the 7 km up to the Hermitage of San Felices de Bilibio, where a flag is ceremonially placed and a mass celebrated. Then, the battle commences. The day starts at 7am with a procession of people old and young, locals and tourists, dressed in white shirts and red scarves, all carrying jugs, bottles, water pistols and other types of containers filled to the brim with sweet rogue wine. Led by the town’s mayor, the procession winds through the town to the cliffs of Bilibio, where a mass is celebrated. After the mass a true free-for-all wine fight begins, and we take advantage of a bottomless supply of red wine and throw it on and at each other, friends and strangers alike. What follows is a sea of wet, purple bodies everywhere. San Vino Wine Fight Festival 2017 is a sight not to be missed.

Valencia - where most Spanish rice originates - is fine for making paellas. However, the "bomba" rice grown in the neighboring region of Murcia, is the "king" of paella rice: again, short-grained, it has the ability to absorb the stock whilst remaining firm.
I shall now have to choose a paella recipe to offer you as an example! I think I will opt for a seafood paella, typical of the region of Valencia, where I live. The ingrediants are for a hearty four servings. If you are not a hefty eater, or on a diet, then reduce the amount of rice/stock slightly. Paella Valenciana - Paella From Valencia

being performed in various cafes cantantes, otherwise known as music cafes throughout Andalucia. A more serious Flamenco form takes on the expression of deeper feelings, called cante jondo. More and more guitar music accompaniment was heard with the Flamenco, using a special Flamenco guitar. It was between 1910 and 1955 that singing or vocals were incorporated into the Flamenco. Soon, it became the ‘opera flamenca’ with fandangos and cantes music as accompaniment to its vocals. However, these modifications were considered drastic and nontraditional to reflect the true culture of Spain, especially by intellectuals. In the year 1922, Granada held a contest in the hope of promoting authentic cante jondo.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Passion to Die For!
T
here are some 500 species of passiflora or passion vine. The great majority are found in South America through to Mexico, Asia and New Guinea. Nine species are native to the U.S.; a further four are from Australia and one only is native to New Zealand. They're not a climber you see too often here and I don´t know why because they are truly gorgeous! I'm happy to say that we now have five different types in Viveros Florena, each with their own special delight!
84 The Grapevine
Passiflora caerulea, blue passion vine: an extremely rapid scrambler/climber that will cover ground in a flash! The typical passion flowers are white fringed blue and very slightly scented. Fruits ripen to a golden yellow and are edible though not particularly tasty. Most passion vines like full sun positions but this one will grow well in half sun-half shade. Now endemic to Spain and can be found growing in the wild where it can scramble to 15m or more. Passiflora edulis, edible passion vine/maracuyĂĄ: this South
American is the passion vine to choose if you want fabulously flavoured fruits. The egg-sized fruits, which mature to deep purple and are just starting to wrinkle when they are ripe, have the best flavour and are rich in vitamin C. This is the passion vine that is commercially huge. The white flowers are banded with bluepurple and white fringing. Growing to about 10m. passion vines, useful if you live in a cold spot. It is not only stunningly beautiful but scented too with a wonderful aroma of clove carnations. The lovely lilac flowers are enhanced by deeper purple fringing and are striking at 8cm across; butterflies adore them! The fruits are smallish, maybe 5cm long, and maturing to yellow. Leave them until they fall off into your hand and they will have a distinctive guava flavour – they are sometimes called May Pops. The vine will reach around 10m.
Don´t mollycoddle them, they don't need it or like it! They are useful – as well as beautiful – because they are rapid growers and will quickly green over a white wall, can
Whichever tickles your fancy, most passion vines are easy to grow. They happily settle into even poor ground and become drought tolerant once well-established.

Passion vines don´t just have a pretty face! Extracts have long been recognised as an aid in calming the nerves and panic attacks, a relaxant and sleep inducer, when it is commonly used in conjunction with valerian. So sweet dreams, perhaps to plan where you can incorporate some passion vines into your life. Please remember that as of 1st June we change to summer hours, 9am until 2pm Tuesday to Saturday inclusive. Always closed on Sundays and Mondays and for the whole of August.
Passiflora quadrangularis, giant grenadilla: Arguably the vine with the most fantastical flowers, they are saucer-sized, exotic and dramatic in a rich burgundy red with deep purple fringing. Scented too, they exude an exotic aroma of ripe melon mixed with touches of jasmine. The fruits are large at about 30cm long and may need some support. They ripen to a golden colour and have a melonlike flavour which is much used commercially in fruit juices. It's a little tenderer than many of the other passion vines and needs a little more tender loving care, more water and protection from the cold, but the flowers make it entirely worthwhile. Give it a warm protected wall site and space; it's big, to about 15m. Passiflora vitifolia, scarlet passion vine, grape-leaved passion vine: Just as dramatic as it sounds, this is one of the most ornamental passion vines. COSTA ANIMAL SOCIETY Press Update Thank you! It's just occurred to me that we do not often enough say thank you to our media sponsors. Whatever publication you are reading now, they have generously devoted precious space to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) in most cases for many, many years. Without their generosity we could not be nearly as successful as we are in re-homing abused and abandoned animals. If you have a spare moment please send them a message mentioning how much you appreciate their support for animal charities and/or like/share their Facebook pages. Gracias para todos! Don't Leave Pets in Cars! With the arrival of summer, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is reminding dog owners to never leave their pets locked in the car. Police officers can and will break in to rescue the animals and will prosecute the owner. In Torre del Mar police broke into a car parked in the town's Plaza de la Paz to rescue six dogs suffering from dehydration. Passers-by raised the alert after the car had been standing in the sunshine for five hours. When the owner finally appeared two hours later, he was told the dogs, which were unregistered, had been taken to a welfare centre. And on a very hot day in the UK a couple of summers ago, a Nottingham police dog handler left two German shepherds in his parked car where the temperature quickly rose to almost 50 degrees. Both dogs died within 20 minutes and the officer was prosecuted. Waggy Tails Puppy season is still in full force and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has received an urgent appeal from a gentleman who lives in the Frigiliana campo. His female Labrador escaped from

his garden and returned up the duff only to have a litter of 10 puppies in March. Unfortunately, the owner's landlord is not happy that he now has 12 dogs living in his garden and is threatening eviction. Two of the ten pups have already been adopted and the 8 remaining for adoption are called Baby, Bouncer, Buster, Canada, Leo, Ohm, Sooty and Sweep. Baby was the runt and was usually pushed out at feeding time. She has been given extra attention and food and was the first to be weaned. Baby will definitely be a lap dog as she is very loving and sweet. Bouncer is a typical energetic pup with a white stripe on her chest. She is very friendly and outgoing and a black beauty with a white stripe on her chest. Buster is going to be huge as he is the second biggest of the litter and solid as a rock. He is very quiet and well behaved with and loves to give kisses. Canada is another quiet one who is also well behaved. He too is affectionate but not pushy and will be a typical Lab. Leo is a soft fluffy bundle of love who is always ready for a cuddle. Ohm is the biggest of the litter and she is the boss. She is a muscular female who is very playful and always takes care of Baby when the others bully her. Sooty is a solid black female who is very playful and a bit of a tear away as she is always biting ankles and chewing trouser legs. Sweep is the scamp of the group and is always getting into mischief. She is incredibly sweet and always playing with Sooty.
In March, four sibling pups, Brownie, Munch, Scrappy and Spot were placed into kennels by the Costa Animal Society (CAS) After two months Scrappy and Spot found homes within two days of each other. Scrappy went to a foster couple at the beginning of May. After only one week they had fallen in love with him and decided to keep him permanently. Spot was spotted on the CAS website (www.casnerja.org) and went to a lovely couple two days later. Brownie and Munch are still looking for their forever homes, which goes to show the amount of time and cost it takes to find homes for dogs that are left on our doorstep. Quiz The Punta Lara Bar in Nerja is pleased to present their monthly quiz in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday, June 23 starting at 8.00pm. All quizzers are welcome to join in a pursuit of trivial knowledge with Quiz Hostess Laura. The â‚Ź3 entrance fee and all raffle proceeds go directly to CAS. Food and drink are available at the bar. Advance booking is recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673.
