Editors Note... Last month the Swim for Life event was organised in Competa, where a huge amount of money was raised for Cudeca. Swimmers came from the villages and from the coast in order to take part in swimming the height of Everest in the Competa pool. My whole family took part and what we felt was a great sense of community spirit, fun was had, prizes were won on the stalls outside the pool and over 3,000 euro was raised for a great cause. You can read the summary on page 94 and see photos of the day courtesy of Kim Riley on page 67. Thank you Kim.

ix people have been arrested after police found the drug hidden among boxes of bananas in a shipping container at the southern port of Algeciras. The stash was the largest ever found in a single shipping container in Europe. Of the six arrested in relation to the find, two were detained in Lyon, France, one in Algeciras and three in Malaga. In a statement, customs officials said the container was imported by a Colombian company on a ship coming from the Colombian port of Turbo. Customs did not say when the bust was made, Spain's interior minister, Juan Ignacio Zoido, vowed to fight traffickers and "to keep drugs out of the streets.”

ne of the most senior members of Spain’s ruling conservative party is facing calls to quit after accusations emerged that she had faked a masters degree in law. Cristina Cifuentes, the president of the party’s Madrid branch and tipped as a possible successor to prime minister Mariano Rajoy, has been a member of the Popular Party (PP) for nearly 30 years but has been forced to cancel a number of public appearances since the scandal emerged. The 53-year-old is accused of manipulating grades and falsifying signatures on records of a postgraduate qualification she

completed in 2012. The state prosecutor has launched a criminal investigation into the reports, with the criminal offence of falsifying public documents carrying a prison sentence of up to six years in Spanish law..
A
father in Spain is accused of raping his 15-year-old daughter and two of her friends after claiming he had to rid them of evil spirits. The man, named as Javier G D, is to go on trial and prosecutors are arguing for a 45-year jail term. It is alleged that the repeated rapes took place at his home in Baix Llobregat, near Barcelona. Prosecutors say his wife colluded with the abuse and should get nine years' jail as an accomplice. The wife was allegedly in the house during the rapes and even asked the girls "how it had been". The man claimed to be in the "Order of Odin" which required him to rape the girls, otherwise their relatives would be cursed with misfortune, the indictment says.The trial will begin in Barcelona and comes after a court acquitted five men of rape charges for an attack on a young woman during a bullrunning festival in Pamplona.

he regional government of Valencia has joined a growing list of Spanish cities and regions that are taking steps to
curb the rise of holiday rentals. The battle is being fought in many of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations, where local residents complain that they are being priced out of their neighborhoods and subjected to constant noise and disturbances by holidaymakers. The most recent example is the city of Palma, on the Balearic island of Mallorca, which has banned tourist apartments altogether. On Tuesday, the regional parliament of Valencia agreed on amendments to a new Tourism Law that will be voted in before the summer. This new legislation will give local authorities wide latitude to regulate holiday rentals according to their own needs. In the city of Valencia, most new apartments destined for tourist use will be limited to ground-floor and first-floor units. Buildings that are used entirely for holiday rentals will require a hotellike license, and new ones may not open in Ciutat Vella, the historical part of town.

rebellion is bubbling among makers of cava. Six of Spain’s top producers of the sparkling wine are distancing themselves from the cava name, which is protected under Spain’s denominación de origen (DO) system, saying the overproduction of cheap fizz has damaged their product’s image. The six producers of cava, which is mainly made in Catalonia, say they believe the DO has ceased to be a guarantee of quality, echoing complaints by Rioja winemakers. The group, which calls itself Corpinnat, announced earlier this month that it intends to register itself and its products under that brand name, and could end up abandoning its DO status.Corpinnat is following the example of another breakaway movement, which saw 14 cava houses give up DO protection and rebrand their products as Clàssic Penedès four years ago – a move met with approval by sommeliers and wine merchants.

ast month I wrote about the two dogs, mother and daughter, rescued from the local campo who were urgently looking for their forever homes. I'm pleased to report that the mother has now been successfully rehomed, thanks to the lovely Sandra, in C贸mpeta. What a lucky dog! Sadly, the daughter, just 5 months old is still looking for her new owner. She's an absolutely beautiful young dog and will make a fantastic pet for somebody. Weighing in at just under 5 kilos, she's calm and affectionate and has a really gentle nature. If you'd like to see her, please contact us and we'll arrange for you to meet. I guarantee you'll fall instantly in love!

Fortunately for this tiny little baby, the amazing Sandiey Anne, who retired as an Action for Animals shop volunteer last year, came to the rescue. She set to bottle feeding the kitten immediately and worked her magic as usual. With Sandiey Anne's expert nurturing skills, the little kitten has survived and will be ready to go to her new home very soon. If you'd like to adopt this sweet little kitty please contact us.

T
he new Law of Voluntary Jurisdiction allows married couples to be divorced before a Notary in Spain, without the need to go to court. The couple can sign a deed which is composed of a declaration of their willingness to divorce, and the incorporation of the divorce settlement agreement. However, in order to proceed with a divorce in this manner, the following requirements must be met: 1. Divorce must be by mutual agreement.

Temperature is One of the Most Important Factors
A
lthough position is important when storing wine, temperature is the most important storing factor overall. Even though you may not have the ideal conditions for storage, you should always have the optimal level of temperature. The temperature when storing your wine is very important, as it affects the overall quality, flavor, and longevity of the wine. Most wines need to be stored for long periods of time, which is why the temperature is so very important. The temperature for storing wine should always be between 50 and 65 degrees F. When stored in this range, the wine will develop quite nicely. In the days before refrigeration, wine was stored in underground cellars and caves. When refrigeration came along, it quickly became the easiest and most preferred way to store wine, as it allowed you to maintain the same desired temperature. In this day and age, science plays

a major role with wine making. Science has proved over the years that aging is actually a chain of chemical reactions that occur over time. Depending on the temperature, the chemical reactions can either be good or bad. Chemical reactions all have unique energy factors that need to be met for each individual reaction to happen. If the temperature isn’t right, the chemical reactions in the wine won’t occur.

Wine that is damaged from heat loses all of it’s flavor and color, making it virtually impossible to drink - or sell.
You should keep any open bottles in your refrigerator, as the average temperature is normally 41 degrees F. You shouldn’t keep bottles that you haven’t opened in the fridge, as the temperature is much too cold. BODEGAS BENTOMIZ A Summer of Music with Food and Wine
L
ast summer saw a wonderful series of open air concerts taking place at Bodegas Bentomiz. This is the winery just off the Sayalonga-Cómpeta road. There is a little sign at the foot of the track and, though the turn coming from the coast is rather sharp, within 300 metres you find a roomy carpark and a magnificent modern building clad in slate, with a broad forecourt beside it. Here they built a stage in the shade of the pines for the artists, surrounded by chairs for the audience, who enjoyed performances by flamenco dancers, a classical pianist, superb jazz-flamenco fusion and the women's quartet ¡ELLAS!, whose brilliant lively music had people up and dancing. It being a winery there was, of course, plenty of wine to be had. They make the exquisite Ariyanas wines, a prize-winning range served in Michelin starred restaurants all over Europe. What's more, in their beautiful wine-salon, whose balcony looked the stage on the forecourt below,

they served freshly made gourmet tapas from six til midnight. ON THE BUSES The New Timetable
I
’ve been away from Competa for two months and I gather the most exciting thing that has happened here is the new bus timetable. An extra bus from Torre to Canillias, and two from Canillas to Torre. Exciting times, you may think!
Its a step in the right direction on behalf of Loymerbus, and here are some thoughts on the subject, which have been put to me.
The new times are 1.30pm and 5.30pm from Canillas and 8.30am from Torre. It has to be pointed out that the new buses only stop and start in Torre! There is no feeder bus to the Hospital, El Ingenio and Velez Malaga.
First the 1.30 bus from Canillas (which will leave Competa at 13.40) In the Summer a trip to the coast to have lunch from 2.15 would be pleasant, and then when its gets cooler onto a sun bed in the shade until the 7.30 bus back.
They are also 5 minutes earlier for leaving Competa and 15 mins earlier for Sayalonga. The timetables are available from the bus drivers, normally there are a few by the ticket machine on the bus. NB. These two new buses down do not have a return buses to tie up with, so the bus back is still 7.30 from Torre.
(It's being discussed at great length by the coterie of bus users, ours is a rich and full life!)
There are afternoon films in El Ingenio. (Bus arrives in Torre at 2.15) El Ingenio will be open to shop and stay cool, but almost 5 hours in a shopping mall may send a person over the edge! (The Torre shops still have a siesta from about 2-5). These buses do not however tie up with a feeder bus that normally

serves for going to the Hospital, El Ingenio and Velez Malaga. This can be a problem to some, but the L1,2,3,4, start from the Torre bus station and all seem to go via the hospital, some El Ingenio and Velez Malaga. Ask the driver first! By the way, to get back to the Loymerbus bus stop from El Ingenio there are the local L1.2.3.4 buses, (approximately every 10 minutes) which stop outside on the main road. Ask if they go to Supersol, if so, get on, and after it leaves the hospital stop, ring the bell and it will stop a little way after Supersol as it turns round to the right, then its a case of walking 10 minutes to the bus stop. (But don’t forget the bus back from Torre is 7.30) The 5.30 bus from Canillas (and 5.40 from Competa) One could have a cheeky 'early doors' in Sayalonga in either Casa Mari where the bus stops (the return stop is over the road), or

other watering holes. The bus will arrive at 6.05 and return about 7.55. A swift race round Lidl from about 6.15 to 7.35. Another alternative is if you have to go to the hospital for the night to sit with a loved one this maybe the answer, and then after spending the night on a chair, the 8.30am back would be good for a refresh! And now for the 8.30am bus from Torre and leaves Algarrobo Costa (Lidl) at 8.35am. These buses are very good for the tourists that wish to visit all three of the villages. Sayalonga, Competa and Canillas It gets to all the villages for either a full day of visiting or walking, either returning on the 1.30, 3.45 or the 5.30. Prior to the new routes, it was a bit of a visiting
rush to catch the 12.30 from Torre and return on the 3.30 from Canillas and then to find the only shop open in Siesta was Dia!
Before this the residents without transport in Sayalonga were out on a limb, so to speak, regarding these activities.
Sayalonga residents could get the earlier bus which reaches their village at 8.55 and come to Competa for the banks and if quick enough catch the 9.45 back from Competa. Or visit the new dentist we now have on Calle San Antonio, do a supermarket shop in all the 4 supermarkets, chill out in the various bars, or walk to Canillas.
Another of my musings is if you have a night out on the tiles, in Torre, the early bus an advantage for your walk of shame to go unnoticed!
Also in Competa there are various Yoga classes, Zumba twice a week, swimming in the indoor pool and a new gym. Canillas has Pilates. The Tourist Office has some information, which is situated by the bus stop in Competa. All this excitement just with the advent of three new bus times!
These are just my silly musings to alert the Grapevine readers to the new bus timetable! This has got to be good for the economy of the villages, but it's not been widely publicised. Hopefully it is now. Please note the new buses are no good for Malaga shopping or the Airport.

In addition to their summer menu they will continue with the selection of homemade desserts and of course all their summer dishes will continue to have fresh and quality ingredients. Gilly Chats About How the Business is Going

istro 6 in Competa has now been open over 15 months. I interviewed Gilly and Gary when they first opened. However, owning her own business was very new to Gilly so I thought it would be good to have a chat with her to see how things were going after their first year. There is no doubt that Bistro 6 has been a success. Living in Competa myself and having visited the restaurant numerous times I can talk from personal experience too. The food, ambiance and hospitality have always been fantastic. Gilly explained she does pride herself on ensuring the customers enjoy their experience at Bistro 6. As they are only a small restaurant with the two of them, she really does encourage you to book prior to eating. This will ensure they can provide the quality of food and service which is extremely important to them both and they understand that this is what brings their customers back time and time again. For the hotter weather they are introducing a new summer menu to include smaller dishes, light bites and plates to share, along with keeping some old favourites from the winter menu. Gilly was also keen to add that they are happy to cater for all sorts of different diets such as Vegan and Vegetarian. In order to accommodate for this just pop by and have a chat with Gilly in advance of your booking. Along with special diets they have hosted many a party and successful birthday celebration. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH The Right Plant for the Right Place.

eth Chatto was one of our greatest modern day horticulturalists, a real plant person. Her favourite saying, by all accounts, was “The right plant for the right place� and she firmly believed in providing garden plants with an environment as close as possible to their native habitat. Born in 1923 (died 13 May 2018), she was ahead of her time, believing in ecological ideas, protecting the environment and

creating natural-looking planting areas in a time when these ideas had hardly been heard of. She had no formal horticultural training but her life-time work and famous garden at Elmstead Market, near Colchester along with her nursery for unusual and drought-loving plants, turned her into a much-respected figure. Her inspirational garden there became a mecca for keen gardeners looking for something different and her books, such as the classics The Dry Garden and
The Gravel Garden, made her internationally famous. During the 1970's she won ten consecutive gold medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Unusually, in a time when displays strived for colourful visual impact, her quieter plantings were a revelation to a new line of gardeners striving for a more natural look. If her plants were her backdrop, they also mimicked her; tough, wiry, determined, long-lasting and

well-loved. A tapestry of colours, movement and emotions, grasses and perennials interwoven. I'm sure she's already planning her new garden in Heaven. We've lots of new unusuals in stock at Viveros Florena, and totally in keeping with the concept of the right plant in the right place. Mediterranean climate plants from around the world that work perfectly and economically in our gardens. Capparis spinosa: Caper plants love heat and intense sunlight. They revel in poor, rough soil and will sprout out of the driest looking crevice. Its widespreading roots anchor the soil and prevent erosion. The plants form low arching shrubs to around 0.5m tall with arching canes that can reach 5m long. The leaves are a glaucous green and semi-succulent - attractive in their own right - but it's the flowers that draw the attention. They are exquisitely fragile in form, with creamy-white petals and long lilac stamens. Each one will only last between 24 and 36 hours but they are abundantly produced. Capers are either the flower buds, considered the best for taste, or the later fruits. Centaurea pulcherrima: Batchelor's Buttons or Knapweed is a native of poor ground in Turkey. It forms mounds of lovely silvery foliage with pink-lilac flowers in late spring/early summertime. Cistus: Rock roses are great for our natural gardens, softening the boundaries between garden and campo. We've many in stock; here are just a few. Cistus x purpureus Alan Fradd has large white flowers with magenta blotches surrounding its golden eye; approx. 1,5m high x 1m wide. Cistus x pulverulentus has deep magenta pink flowers and grows to 0,75m high x 1m spread. Cistus x skanbergii

becomes smothered in delicate pink flowers, again to 0,75m high with a 1m spread. Dichondra argentea Silver Falls: As silvery as it sounds, it is also known as silver ponies foot for both the shape and colour of its leaves, this is a great trailing plant for pots, cascading over walls or as groundcover. The flowering is insignificant, it's all about the leaves. An Australian sun-lover, it is very drought resistant and will recover well from neglect! Dymondia margaretae: The South African Silver Carpet is a really tough ground hugger with silver-backed leaves and bright yellow daisy flowers. It looks great between stone paving slabs and can also be used as a lawn substitute with a spacing of 6 to 8 plants per square metre. Extremely drought and disease resistant. Eriocepahalus Africanus: Another South African, known as African rosemary or snow bush. A low shrub with fabulously scented grey-green foliage and masses of small white flowers. Tolerates a seaside position too. Approx 1,5m x 1,5m Galvezia (syn. gambelia) speciosa. Found in rocky bluffs in California, the Island Snapdragon makes a lowgrowing evergreen shrub, to approx. 1m high x 1,5m spread studded with lipstick-red flowers throughout springtime, often repeating in autumn. Needing little water, it will also tolerate salt-laden winds. Gypsophila muralis: Delightfully known as Baby's Breath, for its tiny puffs of white and pale pink flowers, this is a plant that, again, is much tougher than it looks. The delicate-looking ferny foliage forms tidy mounds studded with tiny flowers which are edible with
a mildly sweet flavour, so pretty for decorating desserts! Lavandula Hidcote: The much acclaimed Hidcote lavender is one of the most heavily perfumed lavenders and is always visually striking with its deep purple flower spikes. A lovely plant for low hedging along a pathway. Lewisia cotyledon: Looks far too pretty to be tough, but it really is! A member of the portulaca family, this succulent loves poor rocky soils. From the fleshy rosette of green leaves, emerge the candystriped flowers in pink, peach, yellow and white. Maireana oppositifolia: Bluebush has the most beautiful silvery blue-grey intricate leaves, tightly packed, with soft yellow flowers sporadically produced throughout the year. An evergreen Australian to about 1m high x 0,5m spread. Please remember that as of 5th June, Viveros Florena will revert to summer hours, 9am until 2pm Tuesday to Saturday inclusive. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH The Royal British Legion does not condone war, or glorify it in any way. It was formed to support those men and women and their families who suffered in conflict and although there cannot be any combatants still alive from the first World War, subsequent battles have resulted in many victims who still require our help and support.To this end, our branch continues to raise funds by holding our monthly lunches and other events. On the 30th of June we will be holding our Armed Forces day lunch at the Al Andalus hotel. This is a special occasion when we show our gratitude to all those who serve to protect us now, those who did in the past and cadets who will in the future. Our guests will be Major Del Hamilton and WO Mike Wooley, who will bring us up to date with what is happening at the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh which we support. Our lunches are open to everyone who is interested. I stress again, you do not have to have been in service, British, or of any particular religion, or culture - we would love to see new faces and meet new members. SWIM FOR LIFE - MAY 12TH COMPETA UPDATE Our wonderful community again did us proud! A total of 29 swimmers began the swim at 10am and swam for life reaching the summit of Everest not once, but twice, a staggering 17,700 metres or 708 lengths of the 25m municipal swimming pool in Competa. Team Elite finished in a record time at 11.39am and Team Challenge, led by Martin Robinson who brought us this idea and who despite currently undergoing gruelling chemotherapy treatment, completed 60 storming lengths himself. Plucky 98 and 90 year old Bobby and Inge started us off followed by children and parents swimming together all finishing at13.30 pm ahead of schedule. At the time of writing we have thus far raised in excess of 3,000€ with more on the way in. A huge thank you to the ever resourceful and persuasive Kevin who collected 1,255€ (the winner of the meal for two kindly donated by el Pilon John and Rose number 187), Individual Sponsorship totalled 754€ and special mention goes to Asa, Katherine and Tracey P. Martin raised 445€ and the fabulous Cudeca Volunteers manning the
tables and stocks outside the pool raised a fantastic 602€. These fund raising events are not possible without all of your help, commitment, goodwill and donations and we would like to thank everyone o took the time to take part and help make a difference to someone else’s life. f you've got an extra 20,000 €, there's no need to read this article. Because you may receive a fine up to this amount, if your personal airconditioning is installed by someone not certified for handling refrigerant gas. It should be done by a certified company for the installation of AIR CONDITIONING and HEAT PUMPS. If you are thinking of installing air conditioning, it is important to know the new law. As a purchaser, you also have obligations and possible fines, so get information on the company and fitters you contract, in order not to break the law. We'll tell you about it: Air conditioning: installation only by professionals Last February, the Royal Decree 115/2017 was passed, in order to regulate the sale and handlingof equipment containing fluorinated gas, which are not hermetically sealed. This is the case of current air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pumps.

Double certification, According to the new law, this equipment can only be installed by professionals certified for handling fluorinated gas and who work for an installation company authorized to install apparatus using this type of gas. This means that double certification is required.: ·As a professional certified to handle fluorinated gas. ·As a company authorizedto handle fluorinated gas. The need to have duly trained and certified professionals to handle these systems is mainly because of the highly pollutant elementsinvolved. Obligations of the seller and purchaser In addition to the requirements imposed on installers, this law also establishes obligations for sellers, who handle apparatus with fluorinated gas, although to a lesser extent, and for purchasers: ·The seller should inform the purchaser that the installation can only be done by an authorized company. In order to guarantee
that this is done, both the seller and the purchaser should sign a document indicating this information( Annex V1, part A) of the RD. ·The purchaser should send to the seller within a maximum period of one year, if it is not the same company, Annex V1, part B signed by him/her and by the installer, who has carried out the installation, indicating the equipment details and the certificates of the installer and authorized company. · From 1 January 2018, the seller is obliged to inform the competent authorities of their Autonomous Region, of the purchasers who have not provided Annex VI, Part B, by sending a copy of Annex VI, part A. · Non-compliance by the purchaser or seller, could mean a fine of up to € 20,000. · On the website of theMinistry of Industry you can consult the companies that now have fluorinated gas certification.
