Editors Note... Summer is here and the kids finish school this month. This year my daughter completes her secondary school education. I can’t believe we moved here with 9 month old twins 15 years ago and now I am talking about one of them finishing school. Her last year has been marked with an end of school week long trip to Tenerife and with a graduation ceremony at the end of June. Graduation is an important date in the diary. We have been preparing with dress shopping and shoe buying and of course the copious amounts of studying to ensure graduation happens. I will been glad when the term is over as much as my daughter! NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

T

he travel guide Lonely Planet has named Madrid as the second-best place to visit in Europe for 2019. Travel experts from the famous guidebook awarded the Spanish capital for its efforts to make the city more environmentally and pedestrian friendly. According to Lonely Planet, “the emphasis on sustainable living has led to wide-scale pedestrianization, bicycle lanes and rental schemes, widened footpaths, and new emissions controls transforming the city.”

P

arents who received paid paternity leave took longer to have another child and men’s desire for more children dropped, a study in Spain has found. The progressive reform towards gender equality may have changed the way men in the Mediterranean country see fertility. The introduction of paternity leave in Spain, like in other countries, was part of a set of policies designed to promote gender equality both in the labor market and at home, said Libertad González, one of the researchers behind the report. It was also to promote fertility. “Spain is a lowfertility country,” González said. But it seemed to have the opposite effect.

pending safety checks a day after it opened to the public. The 38metre-long slide in Estepona, on the Costa del Sol, is intended to give residents of all ages a quick way to travel between the streets, which sit at very different levels. The stainless-steel chute, reputed to be Spain’s longest, has a gradient that varies between 32 and 34 degrees. It was unveiled one day in May but shut the following day after people complained of injuries, and a video posted on social media showed a user hurtling down the slide at fearsome speed and flying off the end.

P

olice in Belgium have arrested the 16-year-old son of a woman whose body was found hidden in a trunk in Playa del Palma. The youth had disappeared shortly before the body of Gloria Zavala was found wrapped in plastic bags in the garage of a home on the Carretera Militar.Belgian officers and investigators from the Spanish National Police’s Homicide Group also arrested the girlfriend of the victim’s son, a 17-year-old who had disappeared at the same time.A post mortem examination allegedly found that Zavala, 53, was the victim of a homicide, although the advanced state of decomposition of the body did not make it possible to determine the precise cause of her death.

A

Dutch expat has been arrested for allegedly hiring a Mexican hitman to kill his Algerian ex-wife in Spain. He was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Alcañiz after the man’s daughter raised the alarm when he lent her his phone as hers wasn’t working. She discovered messages where he was allegedly contracting a killer to fly the Atlantic to murder the girl’s mother. The daughter tipped off the intended victim who made a complaint to police. Investigators say a payment of €2,000 had already been paid to the hitman, who was to get further payments once the woman was dead.

T

he latest official update to the Real Academia Española‘s Diccionario de la Lengua Española (Dictionary of the Spanish Language), now in its 23rd edition, includes 62 additional words. Among the additions are more than a dozen words of English origin – by far the most numerous among the various extranjerismos. Adding anglicismos to the preeminent dictionary of the Spanish language is, naturally, a precarious undertaking. The decision to include or exclude a particular English derivation must balance the Diccionario’s functions as an authoritative regulator of Spanish usage, on the one hand, and, on the other, as a responsive reflection of how people really use the language.

when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain. 4. Benefit from the inheritance tax advantages and allowances applicable to tax residents in Spain (i.e. no inheritance taxes between spouses on the main home). 5. Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the income tax applicable to non-resident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210).

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Time to Formally Become a Tax Resident in Spain.

A

ccording to the Spanish Law all individuals who are living in Spain for more than 183 days a year are tax residents in Spain and have to pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income. Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (for more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit annual tax returns out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse, A Tax return should be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain. Up to date, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities are aware of this important group of people. Now the situation has changed, due to the financial crisis, the Spanish Government intends to tighten up its control of all foreigners living in Spain to ensure that they pay taxes in

16 The Grapevine

Spain where due, and thus avoid thousands of people receiving free health services without paying taxes and without having the legal right to get them. The Spanish Government has decided to be stricter with the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish health cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall (called “Empadronamiento) in order to get treatment. Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2017, This should be done during the months of May and June 2018. There are many good reasons for doing this. It will enable foreign residents to: 1. Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable. 2. Have the legal right to receive a health card which allows access to the Spanish Public health system. 3. Avoid the 3 % withholding tax

It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points. CONCLUSION: If you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days a year) we would recommend that you submit an annual income tax return during the months of May and June for the tax year 2017. By doing this, you will confirm to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing legally in Spain and duly paying their taxes here. For further advice on this matter or to arrange a no obligation meeting to discuss your particular circumstances in detail, please contact us Jose M. Lopez-Avalos Tel. INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 cup water 2 Tbsp butter zest of 1 lemon pinch of salt 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 4.5 oz unbleached white flour 1/4 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 3-4 cups vegetable oil (canola, corn, etc.) for frying powdered sugar for dusting egg custard for filling (optional)

BUNUELOS DE VIENTO Spanish Desert Recipe

A

s the name implies, these "bunuelos" are light and fluffy, and melt in your mouth. They are perfect for an afternoon snack or dessert and are a typical Spanish dessert. They are lightly fried, and dusted with powdered sugar and/or filled with pastry cream, egg custard or marmalade.

PREPARATION This bunuelos recipe makes approximately 24 bunuelos. For bunuelos with custard filling, allow approximately 20 minutes to prepare custard. See end of recipe for link to egg custard recipe. Pour water, butter, granulated sugar, lemon zest and pinch of salt into a small sauce pan and bring to a boil. As soon as the water boils, add the flour and baking powder all at once and begin stirring with a wooden spoon. Stir constantly until the

dough begins to come away from the sides of the pan. Take off the heat and allow to cool down for a few minutes. When the dough is no longer hot, but warm, stir in the eggs, one by one. Use a hand mixer if necessary to ensure that the dough is smooth. Set aside for 1.5 to 2 hours.Pour approximately 1.5 inches vegetable oil into a large heavy-bottomed frying pan. Heat on medium-high. When the oil is just hot enough to fry, begin dropping spoonfuls of dough into the oil. Turn over when bottom is golden. The bunuelos should turn a golden color and begin to float when cooked. Remove them from the pan one at a time using a slotted spoon or spatula. Allow to drain on a paper towel. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

THE OSBORNE BULL

A Popular Symbol in the Spanish Countryside

M

any tourists see this 14 meters high bull on the motorways of Spain, black, strong and proud, and think it is a symbol of Spain. However this bull is actually only advertisement. It was a commercial trade mark of Osborne (producers of sherry and other spirits) but the wide presence of the bull all across Spanish roads made it a very popular symbol in the Spanish countryside. However, meanwhile it became a national symbol and also one of the most popular motives for tourist photos. The Osborne sherry company, founded in 1772, began erecting large bull-shaped billboards in the 1950s to advertise its Brandy de Jerez. The black silhouettes were emblazoned with the name “Veterano” in bright red. The billboards are distributed throughout the Spanish landscape. The Osborne bull, or Toro de Osborne, stands proudly alongside roads and on hilltops, cutting the horizon with its mighty shape. Despite the initial function,

28 The Grapevine

over time the bull has transcended the commercial brand and become a cultural symbol of Spain. This design was created by Manolo Prieto, an artist who became general manager of the advertising company in 1956. I There are currently about 90 or so Osborne bulls distributed irregularly around the country. The largest concentration is located around Jerez, where Osborne’s cellars are located. The rest are scattered throughout the Spanish geography. In 1994 a law that prohibited all roadside advertising of alcoholic beverages came into being, and the bulls were therefore to be removed. By this time the signs were nationally renowned, so although some campaigners wished them to be completely removed to fully comply with the intent of the law, public response resulted in the signs being retained, but completely blacked out to remove all reference to the original advertisers.

The Court eventually allowed these signs to remain on the grounds that they have become a part of the landscape and have "aesthetic or cultural significance", thus turning the bulls into public domain images. There are now only two signs in Spain with the word "Osborne" still written on them. One is at the Jerez de la Frontera airport in the province of Cadiz, and the other is in the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa María, where the Osborne headquarters is found. The image of the bull is now displayed in stickers, key rings and the like. Also, in sport events where a Spanish team or individual take part, the bull is embedded by supporters in the Flag of Spain in the manner of a coat of arms. There are about 90 examples of the Osborne bull advertisements.

REVIVE MASSAGE Happy 1st Anniversary

T

anya Kennedy came to Cómpeta from Northern Ireland a year ago to move away from the pressures and stresses of corporate life in the UK towards a new and better way of living in Southern Spain. As she's too young to retire and it was important to her to have a sense of purpose as she moved forward, Tanya re-trained in therapeutic massage and opened Revive Massage in the centre of town.

I asked Tanya, “how's the first year been?” She told me that it's not been without its ups and downs and went on to say “I'd imagined by now that I'd be up and running with a steady client base and a nice routine – we're not quite there yet. However, I would describe my first year as successful – just not in the way that I'd imagined! I've established a good reputation, have a list of regular clients and a good stream of visitors and tourists who contact me for appointments”. She went on to add, “I also have a 5-star rating on Tripadvisor, new premises in the centre of town and a great life in Cómpeta surrounded

36 The Grapevine

“At the same time, I have continued delivering some of the consultancy and EU advisory work that has been my bread and butter for the past 20 or so years. On one hand, whilst this is fantastic and I feel very lucky to have options that enable me to generate a good income that helps to support our life in Cómpeta; on the other hand, not being available all the time is inhibiting the growth of my massage business. People need a consistent presence if I am to generate return visits and good recommendations. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you're not actually here”. “It's a bit of a Catch 22 situation that I am managing right now with the support of my fiancé, Bryan. We continue to refurbish our townhouse in Competa – a project that we had hoped would have been completed by now. As with many of the beautiful old houses in this amazing Pueblo Blanco, work on our property has involved a bit more than we'd anticipated; we'll get there! Bryan is also busy helping some of our many friends and acquaintances to manage, maintain and improve their properties. He's really enjoying this new way of life after a pressurized career is sales.” Although this first year has not been quite as expected, Tanya and Bryan have no regrets about making the move to Cómpeta . Both feel happier, healthier and relaxed than this time last year and Tanya continues to offer massage for residents and tourists alike as she promotes her absolute belief that physical and psychological wellbeing is our most valuable asset and one that

we don't spend enough time focusing on. As an added bonus, she and Bryan became engaged last month and intend to marry in Cómpeta next year. Whilst Tanya continues to juggle her own competing demands, she is working towards an end game that will see her in a position to build her massage business over the next 2 years to a point where she is financially independent from an income generated through Revive Massage. She wants to significantly reduce the amount that she has to travel and simplify her life further – getting back to her original plan of a regular working routine that allows time for friends, fresh air and relaxation. She says, “with the benefit of some experience, a good reputation and a much better understanding of building a small business in this area of Spain, I'm in a much stronger position.” “I am passionate in everything I do,” she said. “I have always put my heart and soul into my work. I want to be the best in my field, providing the very best results – and I have managed to do pretty well so far. Cómpeta is a thriving adventure sports and outdoor pursuits area and wellness tourism is a major growth industry in Spain. Cómpeta is also reported this year as being one of the top three places to visit in the Axarquia region with a massive increase in rentals that compares to Frigiliana and Ronda. I am looking forward to building my business as I increase my understanding of the opportunities that lie ahead.” If you would like to talk to Tanya about how massage might benefit your wellbeing, or you are interested in partnering with Revive, you can contact Tanya at revivemassagecompeta@gmail.com,

JUNE FESTIVALS

Summer Fun!

I

you love beach parties the San Juan fiesta festival is for you. It is usually celebrated the last weekend in June each year up and down the coastal areas of Spain most notably in Andalucia where the warm temperature makes for a perfect all night party. This ancient pagan festival is now legendary for its all night long party beach party of music, dance and fun. The night is all about fire and water, where young and old congregate to build fires and enjoy the night. According to tradition to be cleansed and purified you must jump over the fire three times. What is la Noche de San Juan? In short, it can be described as the traditional welcoming of summer seen along every beach in costal Spain on the night of the 23rd of June.

46 The Grapevine

This welcoming of summer involves a little of everything you should expect from summertime in Spain, but amplified. In Spain, people are said to live outdoors, so the start of summer is a huge excitement. Everyone is ready to have fun, be with friends and family, and celebrate with food, drinks, and bonfires. What to expect Expect the unexpected. No matter where you are celebrating along the coast, it will be a special experience, but overall it is the people you are with that will define your night. Head to San Juan with friends, family, or join a party of beach-goers. A couple of things to be expected are packed beaches, excitement in the air, music, and definitely bonfires. The bonfires you’ll see are symbolic; some say that the fires are meant to be purifiers and

protectors, providing the only lighting needed into the night. They are also said to represent the heat that fills Spanish summers. Another thing to look out for are the lanterns that are released floating into the sky. Romeria de Rocio The famous spectacle that is the Romeria de Rocio is held 50 after Easter so usually falls in June each year. This famous colourful and dusty pilgrimage pays homage to the Virgen del Rocio and is one of Andalucias largest religious festivals. Although the Virgen del Rocio has been celebrated for over 800 years and divided into two main parts, the festival of Almonte of which the Virgen del Rocio is the patron saint and the pilgrimage which starts several days earlier, the festival is a blend of catholic

and local pagan beliefs.

infertility and mental disorders.

The pilgrimage to the village of Rocio is quite a spectacular and traditional affair with hundreds of brotherhoods from surrounding villages and from all over Andalucia taking part. Decorated horse and carts are beautifully and lovingly prepared in bright colours and flowers with the pilgrims dressing in traditional gypsy inspired flamenco dresses and the men in their short cropped jackets ( a la Andalucian style ) and unique wide brimmed bolero hats. Some carts are even pulled along by oxen and horses although mostly these days sturdy 4x4 vehicles are the modern substitute, ideal for driving over the soft sandy conditions that await. The Rocieros arrive in the area and camp out in the surrounding fields and marsh land alongside the Doñaña National park.

There are no tarmac roads to speak off in El Rocio as the whole village is built on sand, vehicle parking areas have been replaced with fences to tie up the horses. If you have never visited El Rocio I would highly recommend it as it is undoubtedly one of the most unique villages in Spain.

Although the Romeria is a highly religious festival as you would expect with the Spanish it is also an time of much fun and enjoyment for all the family, and the party stops for no man. Local produce such as black foot ham ( Pata Negra ) white prawns from Sanlucar and many other excellent dishes will be eaten and all will be washed down with some the Finest wines and sherry’s the region has to offer.

The Wine Fight The Wine Fight takes place on the outskirts of Haro, a small wine-producing town that is one of the most important in Spain’s La Rioja region. La Rioja is world famous for producing red wine that can be found all over the world, and the town of Haro is home to 40% of the entire region’s vineyards. Wine is a big deal around here. It makes sense then that every year the locals of Haro celebrate San Pedro with the Haro Wine Festival, a week of drinking and music that is now world famous due to the Wine Fight (Batalla de Vino) that takes place on the 29th of June.

The start of the Wine Festival finds itself in the 13th century, when the Haro had to officially mark the property lines between them and their neighbours in Miranda de Ebro. This had to be done every year at Saint Peter’s Day as well as every first Sunday The highlight of the festival for of September, or else Haro would many a devotee is when the Virgen del Rocio ( a large silver become a part of Miranda de shrine ) is taken our from the Ebro. 400 years later, the Church in the El Rocio in all her observation broke down and splendour , this is where the people started throwing wine at religious fanaticism really kicks in each other. That day the tradition with thousands of devotees started and earned the name clamber to touch the Virgen “War of Wine”, which in 1965 was shrine as she passes by, this can changed into Battle of the Wine, go on for several hours with many or Batalla del Vino en Haro as it’s followers visibly moved by their known in Spanish. unique experience. This custom is better understood knowing that While the mass and feast still the devoted claim her intense takes place and is regarded as a powers can cure disease, huge part of the town’s history,

the main attraction these days is the pouring of wine on each other and into each others mouths. Nowadays everyone is supposed to be clothed in white shirts with a red scarf. Once everyone has arrived, the city banner is unfurled on the highest rock, which shows the beginning of a religious mass. In the morning the Wine Battle happens. All weapons are allowed during this outrageous battle: buckets, wineskin, sprayers and anything else that can be used to hurl, spray or launch thousands of litres of wine all over the crowd. After battling for some hours, around midday everyone heads back to Plaza de la Paz, where the celebration continues with lots of food, drinks and people. Later in the evening activities take place in the town’s bull ring. The bulls used are actually smaller female heifers known as “vaquillas”, which much less dangerous than male bulls and are used to entertain the general public by chasing people around. The bulls at this event aren’t killed. Granada’s Ham and Water Festival The quality cured ham and pure water from the natural springs of Alpujarras provide two key ingredients for celebrating Saint John the Baptist’s Day. Water buckets, hose pipes and water guns get blazing at the stroke of midnight. During the day everyone is fare game when it comes to getting a good drenching. The night is then celebrated with copious amounts of locally brewed beer and wine along with plate fulls of the finest local cured ham.

MOUNTAIN WINE & MUSIC 2019 Summer Concerts in Sayalonga

I

magine, on a hot summer night, taking a taxi to this wonderful location – just above Sayalonga with views from the mountains to the sea. It is nine o’clock and the evening is cooling nicely. You quench your thirst with a glass of the Ariyanas wine and admire the landscape. You are seated beside a striking modern building on the broad forecourt – just beyond it are the slopes of the vineyard, the grapes hiding coyly under the leaves. You can see all the way from La Maroma down to the Mediterranean sea; breezes flow from it to cool you down. You are looking forward to a gourmet buffet dinner – for the last four years (since they opened their restaurant for lunches) Bodegas Bentomiz have had fantastic reviews for their cuisine – paired with more of that wonderful wine. And the music – they have managed to contract some truly exceptional musicians at the top of their game who will perform for you as the sun sets behind the western hills. First off is a flamenco night on the 16 th of June, with Samaruco. These five young artists are very experienced – they have

54 The Grapevine

performed together at a multitude of fiestas, playing all over Spain as well as at world music events on the international stage. They say: “Our project is based on the development of flamenco, the music that impassions us, but without the limitations of orthodoxy. Guided by the possibilities of dance, song, guitar, violin and percussion, Samaruco is pure – we perform from the heart for a true, unique freedom of expression.” In July the first event is a classical music concert. The bodega is excited to host a trio of international artists – two are flying over from America – and the third is Sedella - based Thomas Kaurich, the concert pianist who has played for Bodegas Bentomiz before, and who was instrumental (pun intended!) in persuading Steinway to supply a piano from Granada for the event. His friends – violinist Liba Schacht and cellist John Sharp play for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The program for this night will be a little different with the performance starting at 8 o’clock followed by dinner at 9.30 – as a reward for your attention!

At the end of the month another treat – Seville band La Bejazz return to perform their distinctive flamenco-jazz fusion. Having just launched their new disc, “Raíces” (roots) they are inspired to perform it within Andalusia this summer. The music was described in reviews as “A flamenco beyond stereotypes, a different jazz, with lyrics, with poetry, with the clapping of the artists and the applause of their audience demanding more” These are just the first three and there are more to come. There are also rumours that Bodegas Bentomiz are planning to expand their range of award winning wines with a cava. It looks to me as if this summer will be something to celebrate. NEWS FLASH! The Bodega has just announced a special offer – guests who book for FOUR people can bring a FIFTH for FREE. Simply add their name in the notes section saying “free fifth visitor” when making your online booking for four. Book now!

PREPARE FOR THE SUMMER The Warm Weather is Here!

B

uying a new swimsuit will mentally prepare you for summer, but your skin may need some help getting ready, too. For gorgeous, smooth skin you'll feel ready to bare, you need to take a few simple steps. Try this head-to-toe refresher to take your skin out of hibernation. 1. Reveal Glowing Skin

Regular exfoliation can be a part of a healthy skin regimen no matter the season; as long as your skin is not sensitive, exfoliation can help you achieve smooth, healthy-looking skin that makes you look more glowing and youthful. But it must be done with care. The goal is to lift off the outer layer of skin cells that are ready to be sloughed off without stripping the skin.”

56 The Grapevine

Brushes, polishing cloths, and scrubs offer easy ways to smooth away rough spots. Rotating cleansing brushes work by physically buffing off the dead skin cells. Exfoliating cloths, microdermabrasion kits, and scrubs with granular ingredients also operate the same way. For the body, look for a scrub that contains coarse particles that dissolve over time, like sugar, so you don’t irritate the skin. Products that chemically exfoliate the skin contain ingredients such as glycolic, salicylic, or polyhydroxy acids that cause the skin to shed its outer layer and reveal the newer layer. 2. Remove Hair Without Irritation If your summer calls for sunny days at the beach or poolside, you may be putting some effort

into removing unwanted hair. But once you rip off the wax strip, it’s also important to care for the skin that’s newly exposed to the elements. Give your skin some time to recover before rolling out your beach towel or getting active outdoors. Stay out of the sun or heat for at least 48 hours after any hair-removal process. Follicles are vulnerable to irritation, and skin may be sensitive due to any heat or friction from lasers, waxing, or shaving.” Since most of us don’t plan our hair removal that far in advance, buffer your tender skin with an oilfree sunscreen, wait for it to dry (about 5 minutes), and dust on some talc-free baby powder. To prevent ingrown hairs, it’s helpful to wear loose-fitting clothing and use an after-waxing product that

there, and after it, Catholics will go to the courtyard to fill the vessels with water from the holy spring. Afterwards, many Spaniards organize picnics on the hillsides. During the San Isidro celebrations, the other attraction is of course bullfighting. The San Isidro bullfighting festival is Spain's most important. This is where the best bullfighters, and bulls can be seen at the Las Ventas bullring during almost a month. Tickets are sometimes hard to obtain and are best purchased in advance. Besides the San Isidro bullfights, we need to highlight two other bullfights for their importance and tradition: the bullfight of La Prensa and the Charity Bullfight, where you will surely find someone from the Royal House.

Plaza Mayor and the so called Opera Girl for its more popular, folkloric character - bringing joy to the nights of San Isidro. But if Zarzuela is not your musical genre, you can choose between different rock concerts that take place daily in the Vistillas or Pradera of San Isidro from 9 to 12 at night. To end each day at midnight, the skies of Madrid fill with color with the nights of fire and music in the gardens of Retiro. It all ends on the 18th with a large fireworks display on the Prairie of San Isidro.

San Isidro Museum If you wish to learn more about San Isidro you should visit the museum dedicated to this saint (Plaza de San AndrĂŠs, 2; Telephone: 91 366 74 15). Although it has changed names More shows worth seeing live are at different points in time, it is popularly known as the Casa de the zarzuela concerts, that take San Isidro since tradition has it place on Plaza de la Villa or

that this was the house of the Vargas, gentlemen of San Isidro, and the saint lived and died here. The building was constructed in the 16th century by the LujĂĄn family. When the Royal Court was transferred to Madrid, this was the residence of Nuncio until half way through the 17th century. Later, and until well into the 19th century, the Count and Countess of Paredes acquired the building, although it then entered a period of decline. In 1974, following an archaeological excavation, the whole complex was demolished and rebuilt. A visit to the Museum entitles you to a visit to the Pozo del Milagro, or Miracle Well, where San Isidro supposedly saved his son by causing the water level to rise. The holiday of San Isidro, has been celebrated in Madrid for centuries

WHATS IT LIKE TO LIVE IN SPAIN? Useful Insights If Your Planning to Move or Have Just Arrived In Spain

T

historical stronghold on work-life balance is loosening in this new economic climate.

Work-life balance Culturally, the Spanish are more likely to prize family life over work, and consequently, many Spaniards and foreigners working in Spain have achieved a far greater work-life balance. That said, times are changing. The economic downturn in the last decade has resulted in lower wages for many in Spain and, whilst the cost of living is lower than in many other EU countries, the ratios do not necessarily balance. Spaniards are now therefore working longer hours than they have previously and there is greater pressure on families for both parents to be working in order to cover the costs of living. The country’s

With the gradual erosion of the tradition of siesta, resulting in many larger companies in cities now moving away from the threehour break in the afternoon, eating al desko, as has been the wont in many other European countries and the U.S., is becoming more of a reality for Spanish workers. Gone, for many, is the sense that there is time to relax built into the working day and Spanish office workers are now likely to have as unremittingly a frantic working day as their European counterparts. The flip side to this is that many of the younger generation are expressing that they are able to enjoy their evenings more with the adoption of these more global working hours.

here is a good reason that so many people emigrate to Spain in so many ways, it’s a wonderful place to live.

60 The Grapevine

The concept of time Time remains an interesting concept when considering the reality of what life is like in Spain. Most people are aware of the cultural stereotype, the mañana attitude which is seen as not only relaxed but often infuriating for those coming from overseas. And indeed, expats arriving from other countries where punctuality is such a rigid expectation (and so linked to a sense of politeness) will have to readjust their thinking when relocating to Spain. Put it this way, if you ask for the bill in a Spanish restaurant, don’t expect it to be placed on your table immediately. Although a cultural shock, once foreigners adjust to the more relaxed way of viewing time both within business and personal domains, they soon come to appreciate how pent up they often had been previously.

Learn the language Expats are generally welcomed and treated with hospitality in Spanish communities and places of work. There is a caveat though. Spaniards are not only unimpressed, but can take offence, if people make no attempt whatsoever to learn any Spanish. Fluency is far from expected but the misconception that English is an accepted alternative language in Spain needs to be dispelled. Certainly, a significant number of Spaniards are adept at speaking English; many speak none at all. Learning the basics will give anyone moving to Spain an advantage. Culture and lifestyle Moving to Spain is appealing for many from other Western societies since the cultural shock is far from seismic. Nevertheless, there are a few differences in culture, behaviour and lifestyle that people can encounter when

moving to Spain that you should be aware of: 94% of the Spanish population is Roman Catholic, with 20% attending church regularly. Religion in Spain permeates every layer of society. Unlike in English, politeness does not hinge upon saying please (por favor) and thank you (gracias). Brief informative instructions and requests are not intended to be or considered rude. Children stay up late with their parents and families in Spain, being just as much a part of any social gathering as the adults. Expect to see children and infants in bars and restaurants late at night across the country.

have to deal with the remnants of ‘machismo’, so much a traditional feature of Spanish society. Women should not be surprised by comments and looks from Spanish men. Castellano is the dominant language spoken in Spain. However, Catalan, Valenciano and Gallego are also all languages in their own right. Do not refer to them as dialects of Spanish, as this is offensive to the people who speak them. Spain has 17 different political regions (autonomous communities), each with a high degree of autonomy. Laws and culture thus vary significantly between these regions.

Women, although now experiencing far more equality in the world of work in Spain, do still

TOP RATED BEACHES IN SPAIN Where Are You Heading To This Weekend ?

L

ocated on the Catalonian coast in northeastern Spain, the Costa Brava area delivers rugged beauty (the name means "rough coast") with many serene beaches surrounded by high cliffs. Aside from the beaches, it's a great part of Spain for sightseeing. Tossa de Mar is an ancient town, midway between Barcelona and the French border. It has a beautiful, curved beach with a bonus: there's a large castle on the hill beyond the beach. The sand here is coarse and dark golden brown, with a large area of the bay roped off for swimming. Attractions in the area include Roman ruins, as well as several nature preserves. The Premier Gran Hotel Reymar & Spa is in the little town of Tossa de Mar, up on the hillside, overlooking the bay. Some of the rooms and suites (try for one on a high floor) have sweeping ocean views. 2 Es Pujols, Formentera Formentera, Ibiza's neighboring island in Spain's Balearic Islands territory, is far more beautiful and

62 The Grapevine

peaceful than Ibiza. Beaches like Es Pujols offer both bright, white sands and dreamy blue-green water. It's no deserted island; the beach is fronted by a pathway lined with cafes and restaurants, and beyond the beach there's a vibrant little town. Formentera is a 30-minute ferry ride from Ibiza. The Castavi Apartments are steps from the beach in Es Pujols. The units are large, and there's a big swimming pool. In addition to its close proximity to the beach, it makes a good base for sightseeing around the island. 3 Playa del Ingles, Canary Islands No list of Spanish beaches is complete without a mention of the Canary Islands. Another Spanish territory, these islands are about 95 kilometers off the coast of Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. The two main islands are Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Playa del Ingles, on Gran Canaria, is 11 kilometers of wide, sandy beach, gradually transforming into beautiful dunes. Once a popular hippy hangout in the 1960s, it's now filled with luxury boutique hotels and foodie restaurants. The beach is golden

brown with a gentle slope towards the sea. There are many beach clubs that rent beach chairs and umbrellas. The Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas overlooks the incredible dunes of Maspalomas (and the ocean beyond), which look like a Martian landscape. 4 Bogatell, Barcelona Barcelona is Spain's second largest city and it sits right on the Mediterranean coast. The coastline in and around the city is lined with beaches. Bogatell is within the city limits but less crazy than the city's main Barceloneta beach. Bogatell, a man-made beach, was created for the 1992 Olympics, so it's well-designed and clean. There are lifeguards on duty and basic facilities (bathrooms and showers) every few hundred yards along the beach. It's a wide, flat beach with coarse, brown sand. The Ibis Styles Barcelona City Bogatell is a good mid-range choice in the area. It's a 10-minute walk from the sand. Locals also enjoy Castelldefels. This beach is 20 minutes by train from downtown Barcelona, and right across from the train station. It has miles of wild

beach, but still plenty of tapas places and beach shacks for food. It's also popular for swimming as well as wind- and kitesurfing. 5 Cala Mesquida, Mallorca Another of the Balearic Islands (like Ibiza), Mallorca is the largest and most developed. It's still possible to find some hidden beach gems. Cala Mesquida is on the northeast coast and just starting to be discovered by international tourists. The small bay has a quarter-mile-long beach with fine sand. There are chair and umbrella rentals but only one restaurant and one snack stand. Showers and bathrooms are also available, but no changing areas. Beyond the beach there's a small town. Vanity Hotel Suite & Spa is a boutique resort property in the little town of Cala Mesquida. 6 Almunecar, Costa Tropical Pass up the resorts on the crowded Costa del Sol and head to the next part of the coastline, the Costa Tropical. There's a much better mix of development and the preservation of natural beauty. The primary resort is Almunecar, which feels like a seaside town in the South of France. There's a long, curving beach, fronted by a street lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels. There is also a row of mainly restaurants along the beach itself. The beach has soft, white sand and the water, especially in the summer, is quite warm. There are many places to rent beach chairs and umbrellas. Swimming areas are roped off, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. Attractions in the area include historic Spanish cities like Seville and Granada. The Playacalida Spa Hotel has a huge, rooftop infinity pool and an overall design like a Moorish castle. The resort is on a hill with beautiful views of the blue water below, a bit outside the tourist zone. 7 Laredo, Cantabria On Spain's north coast, near the French border, the Cantabria region has more than 60 beaches along its beautiful Atlantic Ocean

coastline. Laredo is Spain's outdoor watersports capital, popular with surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers, and jet skiers. The beach is about five kilometers long, curving along a picturesque bay. The beach itself is wide, with very fine, soft, white sand. There are many places to rent all kinds of water sports equipment or take lessons and try something new. The region is also popular with foodies due to its Basque cuisine. Attractions inside the town include some Roman ruins. The Cosmopol hotel is on Laredo's main street, and rooms on the upper floors have great views of the ocean (try to get one with a balcony).

minutes down the sand. The water is warm, and the sand here is tan and slopes down towards the waterline. The beach is bordered by palm trees and raised dunes, topped with a beachfront walkway. The Hotel Valhalla Spa sits on a hill in Carboneras, offering great views of the sea from its rooftop pool.

10 Benicassim, Costa del Azahar Benicassim is known as Spain's music beach and deserves a mention if only for its huge, annual music festival. The multi-day concert, held on the beach, attracts several hundred thousand people each July, along with the top names in the music business. The city itself is a modern, 8 Playa de Torimbia, Asturias Mediterranean resort, with wide, Asturias is a region in northern sweeping beaches and a highly Spain also on the Atlantic coast. developed beachfront promenade. The beaches here are white, Torreon Beach is a peaceful, laidsandy, and clean, surround by back section, perfect for relaxing in rocky cliffs. EXCURSION TO PICO DEL VELETA, GRANADA Cycle Malaga Take Their First Guests of The Season to Pico Veleta (See the front cover photo!)

P

ico de veleta, one of the great cycling challenges in Europe. The third highest peak in Spain on the highest paved road in Europe! Europe's highest and longest road bike ascent. (2430m) Going from glorious sunshine to freezing temperatures in just a few kilometres riding into the thin air, one for the cyclists bucket list!

May 11th was Cycle Malaga's first attempt of the year to make it to the top of Pico Veleta in Granada. The ski season is only just over and there was heavy snow in the area just a few weeks before so it was always going to be a challenge. The forecast looked great, unusually warm weather with a maximum temperature at the top (3300metres) of 12 degrees. On the excursion were Jørgen & Kristine from Norway who were visiting the area on a long weekend break. They have already conquered the 3 routes of Mont Ventoux in a charity event and chose Pico del Veleta as their next challenge. Steve Twiselton owner of Cycle

72 The Grapevine

Malaga and experienced cyclist collected the guests from their accommodation in Nerja and drove to the village of Güéjar Sierra. From here they headed first towards the first well known narrow shady climb of El Duque. When they arrived at the bottom of El Duque they met some Spanish Cyclists that told Steve a farmer was moving a herd of bulls up towards Sierra Nevada and that they would have to go a different route as it was impossible to pass. The Spanish Cyclists suggested "Alto de Haza Llanas" a section of road used in stage 15 of the Vuelta a España 2017. Although shorter than El Duque, it's a lot steeper. The first sign on the hill said 22%! This 5 kilometre section of the road was the toughest part of the day.

snow for the first 3 kilometres. On the 4th kilometre they had to get off the bikes a couple of times to cross some small patches of snow. However, as they continued on the patches of snow started to get wider, deeper and more frequent. They passed a couple of Spanish cyclists on their way down and they said they had just turned around as the snow was too deep. Steve, Jorgen and Kristine decided to continue on and see for their selves. After 500 metres the road was completely covered so it was time to turn back.

From here they cycled up through the pine forest towards Pradallano and then made the left turn up towards Hoya del Moya. This was where Stage 15 of the Vuelta a España 2017 finished. At 2500 metres it has stunning views over the Ski resort of Pradollano and towards Granada.

Thank-you to Jørgen & Kristine. Jorgen and Kristine were great company and now they have the perfect excuse to return, as they still need to take that last photo on top of Pico Veleta!

From Hoya del Moya its only 11k to Pico del Veleta. It started well the road was completely clear of

In the end the snow won and they stopped 6 Kilometres short of the top. It was a great excursion with some stunning photo opportunities.

If you are a cyclist and are interested in the Pico del Veleta challege, you can contact Steve via the website: cyclemalaga.com

But Gold carries a high price ticket so there are times when we might consider an alternative to gold.

W

691947145 to arrange a private consultation.

Durability: Durability includes Wear, Environment & Quality

So Here’s the rundown ( and why it matters)

Most of us are familiar with Gold Plating. However Gold Plating is notoriously poor at coping with the harsh environment that we face here in southern Spain. We should never sleep, swim, shower of sweat in our jewellery, even more so if wearing gold-plated or silver-plated jewellery. The harsh chemicals in our shower, swimming pool or even our own bodies can easily remove the precious metal plating and discolour the metal. It can even cause a chemical reaction that will discolour our skin!

Construction: If we look at a cross section of filled-gold vs. gold-pated, we will see that Filled-Gold has 5% gold vs. 0.05% gold with goldplated. The core metal is usually Jeweller’s Brass.

Gold-Filled: As long as the piece is well cared for, Gold-Filled jewellery should last a lifetime. Gold-Plated jewellery is not very durable and can’t stand up to much heat, water or wear.

Here at Casa Gina, we have a variety of Gold-Filled jewellery that fill the gap in the market for quality jewellery at an affordable price. Please see our ad to find out where you can consult with us, or call

To advertise call 637 028 873

How it’s made: With Gold-Filled, the core metal is sandwiched between two sheets of gold alloy which is then heated and passed through a roller several times, a process that bonds the metals together and thins the sheets. With gold-plated, and electrical current is used to negatively charge the base metal and positively charge a solution containing gold ions. The positive gold ions are attracted to the core metal, slowly forming a layer of gold on top if the core metal.

Anti-Tarnish: Gold-Filled pieces can still tarnish but it takes special circumstances for that to happen. Pure Gold does not tarnish, so even though it is an alloy, the thick layer on Gold-Filled pieces prevent tarnish. Gold-Plated: Due to the thin layer of gold which can easily wear off, gold plated pieces can tarnish once the core metal is exposed Best Uses: Gold-Filled: Meaningful gifts; Business Wear Gold-Plated: Trendy Fashion Jewellery; Costume / Cosplay Jewellery

SUMMER SCORCHERS Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

O

ne of the most-asked questions in the garden centre at the moment is “What can I plant in my garden that will give me summer colour?” It's certainly true that summer is a time when many plants take a mini-hibernation, it's the only way they can survive, to return with renewed vigour in autumn. One way around this is to use tropical or semi-tropicals that love the extra heat and give of their best during summer. They'll certainly give you a real splash of colour though some are relatively thirsty but maybe, for pots, that's not too much of a problem. The downside of these tropicals is, of course, that they do not like our colder winter temperatures so will add nothing to your garden during the cooler months. Things like canna lilies, canna indica, with their big exotic leaves and flowers in brilliant hues look great in summer if you're lavish with water. But in winter, they'll go completely underground. Other examples are hibiscus, frangipane, bougainvillea and plumbago, all of which look less

84 The Grapevine

than interesting in winter! If you've pots in some shade and want summer colour, try coleus with their punch-drunk tangle of riotous coloured leaves. They are somewhat scorned in northern Europe and, I admit, they do seem somewhat chintzy there but, in our climate, they look right growing wildly and luxuriantly, flung out like a giant Persian carpet of lurid colours. The other option for summer colour is to use 'other end of the world plants'. Buy tough sun-lovers that would flower during the cooler months in their homeland and during summer with us. So look out for South African and Australian plants – things like banksias, melaleucas, grevilleas and callistemons. Prolific flowerers, they also add substance to the winter garden. Before looking at some other specific plants, do remember that ALL plants – no matter where they come from – will benefit from good soil preparation. Even though these plants are toughies, and like

high heat and drought conditions, they'll do better with the addition of some organic matter to the soil. If you've home-made compost, great, but, at the very least, add a few handfuls of general purpose compost when planting. Do not add it neat – mix it half and half with normal garden soil (or sacks of soil) so that the roots of your plants are tempted to wander out and not just stay in their cosy cocoon of neat compost. And, after planting and watering in very well, apply a thick mulch to the root area – it helps retain moisture and keeps the soil cooler. So here are some ideas for high heat, (liking 32C to 38C though even over that they will survive and we hope we won´t get too many days of 40C plus!) warm nights and lots of baking sunshine. Some are well-known, others, I hope, will be new to you and some are just to jog your memory about how good they are! Roll out the colour!
