Editors Note... Easter is early this year coming at the end of March and it appears to be a great time to be out and about in the area with plenty of activities and music events going on over the weekend. Of course this will be mixed with the local traditional festivities with various processions, the passion of Christ and family gatherings. Amongst the activities there is a small gathering of local craftsmen in Competa, in a couple of village houses, which is a must see along with the ester spectacular organised by CAMPO. Also, we have on the coast a weekend of live music at Bar Calypso. Front Cover: Hand Painted Spanish Eggs

RESTAURANTE CANTUESO Restaurante Cantueso opens again in Periana

C

risis what Crisis?

Oh how nice it would be to be able to write such a headline and mean it, but sadly we can't. Since the banking crash in 2008 we have all been suffering and many businesses have not survived. Expats on the Costas are badly hit, both by low interest rates on their savings, a poor exchange rate when converting their pensions to Euros and of course the ever-rising cost of living. No fun for the retired Help the Aged report increasing numbers of pensioners struggling financially in Spain and many wish to return to the UK but can't due to the collapse of the housing market. It isn't all gloom however and as can be seen by many of our regular advertisers they are fighting back strongly and some are even doing rather well. One such business is that of Restaurante Cantueso in Periana where the owner Nicky Scott reports that 2012 was a Curate's

6 The Grapevine

egg of a year, with cottage rentals being the best since she took over in 2007 and yet the restaurant suffered due to the downturn in tourists. If this seems to be a contradiction Nicky explains: “There are fewer tourists coming to the area but those that do favour a self catering holiday as it is so much cheaper, and we have a spectacular location overlooking Lake Viñuela with facilities to match.” A Pig is not just for Christmas She went on to explain that over the last few years they have concentrated on the family market and made sure the cottages have everything a family might need. Television and Wi Fi are expected as standard and a family with small children or a baby can forget travelling with buggies, sterilisers, baby alarms, changing mats, cots, toys and much more, as they are provided. And moreover each cottage has been made child safe with a fenced terrace which creates a secure area for the very young to play in. One Spanish family staying over Christmas took advantage of this

security in an unexpected way and brought along the family's pet pig! Nicky feels that part of Cantueso's success is down to their marketing which has seen many initiatives aimed at a worldwide market and last year yielded visitors from over a dozen different countries. Their live webcam attracts over 2,000 hits each week and they have a website in five languages (properly translated Nicky is quick to point out), and a blog that has a steadily climbing readership approaching 3,000 per week. Restaurant re-opens Nicky also told us that during the winter close-down of the restaurant they have not been idle and have trialled new menu ideas, and will re-open on 1st March with an extended Tapas menu and other variations designed to suit all pockets. Chef Carmen Muñoz and her team will be cooking as usual and making sure they keep the locals and visitors coming back for more.

he disgraced son-in-law of Spain's King Juan Carlos risked having his family home seized after failing to post bail in a corruption case that has brought shame on the Spanish Royal Family.Inaki Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres Perez missed the Wednesday deadline to jointly post bond of 8.2 million euros as ordered by a court in Palma de Mallorca investigating their former company for embezzlement of public funds.Failure to post bail could lead to their property being seized including the luxury Barcelona town house shared by the King's son-in-law with his wife, Princess Cristina and their children. The home in the upmarket Pedralbes district of the Catalan capital was bought for 5.8 million euros in 2004 before being completely refurbished. Mr Urdangarin, a former professional handball player who became the Duke of Palma in 1997 upon marrying the King's youngest daughter, is accused of misusing his royal credentials to secure contracts from regional authorities for his not-for-profit Noos Institute and then siphoning off contract fees.

n assistant chef in northern Spain has been accused of attempting to slowly poison ten of his kitchen colleagues over a period of six years using a drug he secretly added to staff meals The 55-year old man, who has not been named but who had worked at the restaurant in the coastal city of Gijon for seven years, was charged earlier this month with 14 counts of attempted murder and ordered to prison pending a judicial investigation. Co-workers reported their colleague to police late last year when they became suspicious after repeatedly falling ill. The only staff at the Asturian restaurant not to share symptoms was the assistant cook and his girlfriend, who also worked there. Police examined plates used by workers at the restaurant and detected traces of calcium cyanamide, a strong chemical used to treat chronic alcoholism that provokes nausea, dizziness and palpitations if mixed with alcohol and can have fatal results if taken long-term.The detained assistant cook is now under suspicion of causing the fatal heart attack of the former head chef who died in May 2011.

arlier this month, millions of burgers were taken off the shelves of UK and Irish supermarkets following similar research there. Spanish chain AhorraMas said Tuesday it would withdraw its Alipende brand burgers following the study. The Organization of Consumers Unions said traces of horsemeat were also found in one other supermarket brand. It said that, just as in Britain and Ireland, many brands failed to give a full breakdown of ingredients and percentages on their labels. The group said there was no danger to health. Horsemeat is produced in Spain but not commonly eaten.

n 11-year-old Spanish schoolboy faked his own kidnapping in an attempt to prevent his parents from attending a meeting with his teachers. The boy, who has not been identified, sent a text message to his father on Monday afternoon telling him he had been snatched off the street in his home town of Xinzo de Limia, in the Spanish northwestern region of Galicia. When his father called his son's mobile telephone, the boy, speaking in hushed tones told how he had been grabbed outside their home by a man while taking out the rubbish and was bundled into the back of a blue Seat. The father, a policeman in the Galician town of Xinzo de Limia, immediately issued a nationwide alert and Civil Guard colleagues swiftly set up roadblocks across the province. But within two hours of raising the alert, the boy was discovered hiding in an empty flat belonging to the family, after his father searched it on discovering its keys were missing from the usual place.

by Haringey council following a complaint from a resident in a nearby flat block in Crouch End, North London. The Purkis family were informed last month the smokehouse was in breach of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Clean Air Act 1993. However, the Prince of Wales, a strong supporter of traditional and organic foods, has stepped in to help the owner of the business, John Purkis, whose family has been in the fish business for generations. Last week a female member of the Prince's staff came to see the Purkis family and asked for details about what had happened. It was explained that the smokehouse won a reprieve and was once again allowed to produce its kippers, smoked salmon and mackerel. However the family were worried the reversal of the ban may only be temporary.

carton of milk would set a family back by £10 and a roast chicken would have a £51 price tag if food costs had risen in line with house price increases over the last 40 yearsin England, research by Shelter has found. The charity said that the typical value of a house had increased by just over 43 times since 1971, from £5,632 to £245,319. If a family's weekly shop had increased at the same rate, it would now stand at £453, which is six times the actual figure of around £75. Applying the house price rate of inflation to everyday food and drink items means that a bunch of six bananas would cost £8.47, a four-pint carton of milk would cost £10.45 and a leg of lamb would be £53.18, Shelter said. Shelter's chief executive Campbell Robb said: ''The high cost of food is already a real concern for people, so if prices reached these levels there's no way we'd accept it.

FOCUS ON SEMANA SANTA Easter in Spain

S

emana Santa (or Holy Week) is the Spanish name for Easter. It dates back to the 16th century when the Church decided to present the story of the Passion of Christ in a way that the layperson could understand. It was decided that the best way to do this would be a series of processions through the streets, depicting scenes from the story of the fall and rise again of Jesus Christ. Though the style and mood of Semana Santa in Spain varies from city to city, the basic components remain the same. Each day there is a number of processions, one from each brotherhood in the city, made up of floats which are carried from their church to the cathedral and back again. Most brotherhoods carry two floats, one with Christ and one with his mourning mother, Mary the Virgin.

14 The Grapevine

Each procession is different and each one has its own particular followers, either due to the location of the church or the exact nature of the procession (the presence of or type of music, the time of day, etc). The floats are heavy, especially so in Andalusia, which is the most extravagant region for Semana Santa. Strong men carry the floats, but with the procession lasting many hours, even they will feel the pain. The suffering experienced is likened to that experienced by Christ and the men (known as costaleros) consider it a great honor to carry the float, despite (and indeed, because of) the pain involved. In Andalusia Semana starts on the Sunday before Easter and lasts until Easter Sunday itself, while in Castilla-Leon events run from the Friday before, making ten days of events. In Toledo, Semana Santa

celebrations are even longer, starting on the Thursday two weeks before Semana Santa itself. During the period of Easter in Spain, torrijas are eaten. These are thick slices of bread, soaked in milk and beaten egg, fried in olive oil and served with sugar or honey. Another Easter food is un pestiño. This is a plain and simple little fritter. A flour mixture is fried in olive oil and then sprinkled with honey or sugar. Sesame is often added to the flour mixture. BULL FIGHTING SEASON STARTS Part of Spain’s deep seated traditions

B

ullfighting is the most traditional of Spanish Fiestas. The Spanish people consider them art forms which are intimately linked with their country’s history, art and culture. Pressure groups attempt to lobby against bullfighting yet the King of Spain himself has allegedly stated that the day the EU bans bullfighting is the day Spain leaves the EU.

Bullfighting can be traced back to ancient days. They were popular spectacles in ancient Rome, but it was in the Iberian Peninsula that these contests were fully developed by the Moors from North Africa who overran Andalucia in AD 711. Bullfighting developed into a ritualistic occasion observed in connection with feast days, on which the conquering Moors, mounted on highly trained horses, confronted and killed the bulls. Today bullfighting is big business in Spain with the top matadores earning comparable salaries to

16 The Grapevine

the nation’s top soccer stars and rock idols.

bullfights in Seville from April through to October.

Bullfighting Arenas A Spanish bullfighting arena is called the Plaza de Toros. All major Spanish cities have impressive bullrings but probably the most outstanding are those in Madrid, Seville, and Ronda.

Ronda Bullring The Ronda bullring was built in 1785 and is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Spain. Previously it had been Philip II’s centre for horsemanship training (Real Maestranza de Caballeria). Bulls were used in this training and when one day an aristocrat fell from his horse one Francisco Romero came to his help by using his hat to distract it. The hat was replaced by a cape and modern day bullfighting was born. Romero’s grandson, Pedro Romero, developed all the passes and moves which to this day are seen at a bullfight. He retired in his eighties after killing more than 5,600 bulls without ever being hurt. Thus Ronda is considered the home of bullfighting.

Madrid’s Bullring La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas was built in 1929 and was first used in 1931. It is the most important bullring in the world with a capacity of 25,000. Every seat is taken every evening during the world renowned San Isidro Bullfighting festival in June. Seville Bullring Building of the Maestranza Bullring in Seville began in 1758 making it Spain’s oldest Plaza de Toros. The origin of modern day bullfighting on foot (rather than horseback) can be traced back to here and Ronda. It is one of the most charming bullrings in the country and although its capacity is only 12,500, it attracts the top bullfighters. You can see

You can visit the bullring in Ronda which houses a small bullfighting museum. The bullfighting season in Ronda is from April to October though fights are quite infrequent.

Services offered by the Foremost Currency Group Services for Buyers Purchasing a property abroad means you will usually need to convert your savings into a foreign currency. The natural inclination is to purchase your currency through your bank; however this is usually a very expensive way of doing it. The exchange rates banks offer are generally not competitive and a specialist currency broker can achieve rates that are up to 5% better. When converting large sums even a fractional difference in the rate can have a huge impact on the total cost so the rate you get is extremely important. You could save thousands of pounds by simply avoiding your bank and using a specialist exchange company such as the Foremost Currency Group. In addition to consistently achieving better exchange rates than the banks, Foremost Currency understand the currency markets in detail and can discuss your requirements providing you with information to help you decide when to convert your funds. Timing is important; buying at the right time and knowing the options open to you can make a huge difference.

Services for Sellers If you are considering selling your overseas property, the Forward Contract can help you take advantage of current exchange rates and you can fix the price now for a transaction that will take place up to two years in the future. You secure the Forward Contract with a deposit of 10% of the total value of your transaction (you need to pay this within two working days of agreeing the contract) and then pay the balance before the contract expires. Once secured, the agreed exchange rate will apply for the duration of the contract. Services for Pensioners For persons living abroad who are in receipt of a regular pension, you will find that using the Foremost Currency Group is a lot cheaper than going through your bank. If you transfer €1,000 per month through Foremost, over ten years you could save nearly £9,000. Our Overseas Regular Payment Plan (ORPP) is a stress free way of sending funds around the world and is ideally suited to those on a regular pension income. As with all of our currency transfer services, you won't pay any commission and you will benefit from the very best in personal service and exchange rates. All you have to do is set up a standing order and the Foremost Currency Group will take care of your payments ensuring that funds are transmitted via priority telegraphic transfer – all this without you having to visit your bank.

W

ith Easter round the corner and summer rapidly approaching, nows the time to start getting fit and why not have a great time while you're doing it.

ZUMBA WITH NICOLA Check out the new timetable

Zumba is here in Competa and the surrounding pueblos and we caught up with Nicola, aka Zumba with Nicola to find out what's happening and where.“ Since we last spoke, classes have been amazing with new members of all nationalities joining every week. I say members, but it's not like a gym. Just turn up at whichever class suits you as and whenever you want.. there's no commitment.” The timetable outlines the different days, times and venues and we asked Nicola if there were any plans for new classes, “ I recently started up a new class in Sedella which has been great fun and I hope to start another in Canillas de Albaida in March. I'll post details on my Facebook page along with the timetable, music videos and votes for the next new song I'll do a routine to.” To the uninitiated Zumba is the popular fitness class that is based around dancing and having fun..typically to Latin and Spanish Pop music. ” The whole point of Zumba is that you're dancing and moving to the music so you have a great time, while you're getting fit and in shape. It's all about having fun and we're even started doing the odd belly dancing routine which everyone loves.. jangly sarongs are encouraged!!” Contact Nicola via Facebook, email or telephone for further information.

A BIT BIZARRE STRANGE STUFF FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

A

Cookie Monster thief is holding one of Germany's most famous biscuitmakers to ransom over the safe return of its prized golden emblem. A ransom note has appeared in a German newspaper Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung which stated: "I have the cookie! And you want it" A picture of a man dressed as the Cookie Monster from US children’s television series Sesame Street posing with the Leibniz biscuit was also published. The Cookie Monster demanded that the Bahlsen biscuit company donates biscuits to children in hospitals across Hanover, its headquarters, and donate $1,000 to a local animal charity.

Replica of Michelangelo's David has prompted some in Japan to call for the naked masterpiece to be given underpants. Okuizumo town in western Shimane prefecture received five-metre replicas of David and of Greek treasure the Venus de Milo, as donations from a businessman who hails from the area. The statues were put up in a large public park that also includes a full-size running track, a baseball stadium, tennis courts, a mountain bike course and a play

area with apparatus for children. "Some people have told the town's legislators that toddlers are afraid of the statues because they are so big and they appeared unexpectedly over the summer," town official Yoji Morinaga said. "They are statues of unclothed humans, and such pieces of art work are very rare in our area. Some people apparently said the statues might not be good for their children," he said. While many locals have welcomed the new cultural additions to the mountainside town of fewer than 15,000 residents, some have asked for David to wear underwear to preserve his modesty, the Yomiuri Shimbun said.

SIX-year-old girl took her mother's keys to her BMW while she slept and tried to drive to see her dad. The girl, who has not been named by Pittsburgh police, did not hurt anyone as she drove for just under a kilometre on icy roads across the town of Lawrenceville before crashing into two cars and a pole ."The girl decided she wanted to visit her father, who lived in a different location. She picked up the car keys and got in the car and drove

away," Police Sergeant. Jerry Parker told NBC affiliated TV station WPXI. "How she knew how to operate a car - your guess is as good as mine."

ustralia-Sri Lanka one-day international gave rise to a record-breaking beer snake. The sipping serpent made its way round the Sydney Cricket Ground during an evening break in play to mass cheers, with its two halves eventually being joined in a triumph of plastic engineering. As amused spectators - among them TV funnyman Julian Morrow - frantically uploaded photos and video to social media, the scoreboard announced that the snake had broken the previous record for length, set at the WACA in 2007.A spokesman for Cricket New South Wales said that while beer snakes – made by joining plastic cups together – were normally discouraged for safety reasons and to avoid annoying other spectators, this one was allowed because people were having so much fun. “The atmosphere in the rain break was as good as it’s ever been, people were having a good time,” he said, adding that it was harmless entertainment, even if the "record" was not proven.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS

F

riday 25th January saw the first ever CAMPO quiz at Competa's Bar Vendimia in aid of Action for Animals. Afterwards we were presented with a cheque for 290â‚Ź, money raised by the quiz and part of the proceeds from CAMPO's Christmas pantomime. A massive thanks to CAMPO for organising the quiz, especially to the excellent quizmaster Pat Kirkbright and to everyone who took part. Our shop was originally set up to provide funds for neutering Competa's strays and to provide financial assistance to local pet owners to encourage them to neuter their pets. Working with local vets Naturvets and Clinica Veterinaria, this is still the main focus of our work. However, these days we are often approached to rehome abandoned animals or by pet owners returning to the UK and leaving their animals behind. We always do our best to help but it is difficult for us without our own animal shelter. We have only a small handful of volunteers able to foster these animals until we can find permanent homes. Despite these obstacles, we have had a great deal of success with rehoming. Last month we were

42 The Grapevine

fortunate to find three lovely people willing to offer new homes to Freddy, Muffin and Pipkin, the lucky pups! If you would like to join our small team of fosterers please contact Nina on 660586040. More recently and further afield, Kritz al Taib contacted us about an abandoned dog in Alhama de Granada. Kritz, a previous resident of Competa now living in Alhama, had been feeding an abandoned galgo, who she had named Sebastian. Unable to find a home for him she contacted us for help. With increasingly colder weather we were worried the freezing nights on the streets would be the death of him despite Kritz making him a warm pullover. Unfortunately, our Facebook pleas provided no offers of a home. However, I was given the number of a mother and daughter team, Karin and Yaiza, who run a brand new shelter in La Herradura. They kindly offered to take Sebastian into their care hoping to find him a permanent home. We delivered Sebastian to the shelter, a magnificent modern refuge, nestling in the mountains of La Herradura. Until he finds a permanent home he couldn't wish for a more comfortable place to

THE WINE ALTAR A professional kitchen at Bodegas Bentomiz

B

odegas Bentomiz, which lies just above Sayalonga, is visible from the road or for walkers from Sayalonga, from the track above. For years you could see an unfinished building: the production area on the lower floor was complete and furnished with modern viticulture equipment – fresh oak barrels, gleaming metal tanks, bottling machinery – but the bottling area was not enclosed, the area was unfenced and the upper storey was merely a skeleton of bare red brick walls and support pillars, awaiting development. But in 2012, month by month, this building has been transformed. The outer walls were finished, clad in a beautifully patterned slate whose dark, soft natural colours suit the rugged, slate soils of the nearby vineyard. The outside apron now boasts a strong wooden fence; the upper walkway features a beautiful metal railing. The upper storey will light and high-ceilinged, the creamy polished-marble finish reflecting without dazzling. All the blank gaps have taken shape: lots of big picture windows and a magnificent railed balcony running across the south-western face, with views that taken in the magnificent Sierra Tejeda, the depth and beauty of the patterned valley, the shadowy Montes de Málaga and the gleaming Mediterranean sea. A herb garden has been planted in the ground behind the railing: lemon grass and chillies, cardamoms, coriander, marjoram, thyme and mint are already flourishing. Even the access has been improved. To reach Bodega Bentomiz you drive up a track for 300 metres; most visitors parked in the space beside the small storage building, just before the

44 The Grapevine

paved driveway up to the bodega. Now just past that driveway you can instead turn into a bigger parking area, also with a wooden fence, with plenty of space for visitors. What is it all for? Well, Bodegas Bentomiz is a winery and that hasn´t changed: the building is for the presentation of fine wines. As ancient an art as wine making is, it is also a science – so the upper storey will include a laboratory to supplement the production facilities. But the main part is to allow visitors to taste, learn about, enjoy and purchase the Ariyanas wines. Since wine is complemented by and complements food – the Bodega have offered Tapas Tours for some years – beyond this will be a professional kitchen – so that herb garden isn´t just decorative. Gourmet lunches; tasting & tapas winery tours, and wine-tastings proper...special events in the summer...and perhaps, on special occasions, open days. The possibilities are dazzling, and not just for the Bodega itself. This daring venture will surely prove a new and exciting attraction for many visitors: the cultured and the curious; wine and food enthusiasts and hispanophiles, tempted into “Eno-tourism” in the Axarquía. That will be an inclusive guest list: disabled visitors will be accommodated; with toilet facilities and lift access from the ground floor, so all can reach the presentation room. This will have that dazzling view; a tasting area with ample seating and the “wine altar”. A wine altar! A glorious high table, a dedicated place to view, describe, present and serve the prize-winning Ariyanas wines with their elegant bottles and beautiful glass stoppers! Perhaps carefully selected guest wines, Spanish or Foreign will also enjoy presentation. Surely Dionysus will be giving it his blessing! Rose Jones

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Quirky Pots

W

ith Easter just around the corner, March is the month when spring blows in and fills us full of optimism for new projects. It's the time when many gardeners come back to life and one of the first jobs to be tackled are pots around the house, poshing them up for the new season. We've lots of bedding plants coming into the garden centre all the time now but it's also sometimes fun to think out of the norm, think of quirky pots with rather strange plantings. Use form, shape and colour. Here are some ideas to inspire. Footwear makes great containers; try planting up a pair of bright rubber clogs or suspend a line of

46 The Grapevine

wellingtons on your fenceline, even that old walking boot can be given a lift with a plant. If you want elegant, how about a stiletto heeled shoe planted with a single prickly cactus? Boots and shoes can last for ages like this but part of the fun of it all, is that some of your quirky containers will not be long-lasting. They'll rot away slowly before you have time to get bored of them and then you can stun your friends with some other brilliant idea.

Search around the bins where broken/tired furniture is often dumped or check out the charity shop. A few euro will often buy you something that will give you and your friends immense pleasure.

Old chests of drawers overflowing with plants look great; try filling them, too, with lettuce, mini tumbling cherry tomatoes, hot peppers and chillies to form a portable veg garden. Or drawers full of leafy herbs look wonderful too. A left over section of

Old pots, pans, colanders and kettles are commonly seen as different containers. Try stacking discarded strawberry boxes with little succulents. I also love the idea of a wall of old tyres. Paint each tyre a different bold colour, stack them leaving spaces for

guttering, fixed to the wall, makes a useful planting space too especially if you've no garden but lust for fresh herbs. Single chairs, or pairs of them, have loads of possibilities.

plants to tumble and erupt and you'll have a wall not easily forgotten. Think 'out of the box' for the most fun of all – a pink padded bra stuffed with rosy petunias, the bigger the cup size the better! And use all those old straw hats that you have lying around, simply lining them with a heavy duty plastic bag. They won't last forever but they'll brighten up several weeks, make you smile and it's better than them lying around collecting dust! Don't be frightened to use colour, it will often lift an idea from good to fantastic. Link it in to other colour schemes around your house to tie the whole scheme together. A line of old tin cans hanging on a white wall – paint

Thank-you to Wayne Wayne Newman first became involved with Artists when the late Juan Cuenca asked him to produce a web site for him, which Wayne had great fun setting up for him. At that time the artist gallery opposite El Pilon being run by several artists was still operating. When it closed Wayne asked several of them whether they would like to be on a combined art web site. Many said yes and hence the start of the Competaart web page. Wayne then organized monthly meetings which everyone enjoyed, and from that discussions led to what exhibitions the group would like to do. Some members suggested it would be good; both for the artists themselves but also Competa in general, if as many as possible opened their doors to the public over the Easter weekend. This was the start of the yearly Competaart Walkabout. It proved very successful and in 2011 Wayne was presented by the mayor with the Compitorum award on behalf of Competaart for the benefit the group had achieved for Competa by bringing in a lot more visitors to the village. Wayne has now decided that enough is enough as it has been a lot of hard work each year. Our thanks and appreciation to Wayne for what he has done over the past years, and hope that he will continue the Competaart web site. There will be no big Walkabout this year but plans are afoot for 2014 and several artists have exhibitions here and abroad these coming months. We would like to thank everyone who has expressed great interest in the Walkabouts and the activities of the many local artists and craftsmen/women here and you can be sure we will be back next year.

A PARTY FOR EILEEN BUSH An 80th Birthday Party thrown as a wake!

W

hen friend and fellow C贸mpeta dweller Eileen Bush invited my wife and I to her wake we were somewhat taken aback but not really surprised. She went on to explain that her 80th birthday was approaching, but rather than celebrating it she was going to hold and attend her own wake.

Eileen had been making her will and funeral arrangements when the idea came to her. We laughed, put the date in our diary and looked forward to it. Eileen is one of those people who laughs in the face of adversity and can often be seen walking to her villa on the edge of the town slowly but steadily, walking-stick in hand despite being in pain from her knees, back, in fact it would probably be quicker to list the problems she does not have! Eileen would be the first to admit that she has seen the interior of hospitals far more then she would have liked.

were a few more people so that we could be filmed. We approached a board displaying a seating plan. The tables were all named after significant places in which Eileen had lived such as Brighton, Liskeard, Dunstable and of course Cómpeta where Eileen had placed herself (later explaining that her present place of residence is where she has been happiest). So after our cue to walk back in again we did so saying “rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb” and trying hard not to laugh as we walked towards the camera following strict instructions not to look at it.

The first that I was aware that the local press had latched onto the story was when I saw Eileen's husband Michael and his Daughter Judy on the day of the party. They told me that they were on their way to buy some Spanish newspapers as Eileen was on the cover. I asked which and they said Malaga Hoy and Sur. Sure enough I looked on the Malaga Hoy website and there was Eileen smiling as usual.

After a drink at the bar we all sat down at our tables; Eileen was nowhere to be seen. A humanist minister then called us to order and asked that the reporters and cameras move towards the back of the hall and then gave a eulogy about Eileen detailing her life and achievements one of which was a much enjoyed career working at Harrods, not as Malaga Hoy had reported the Hard Rock Café. I should have known something was amiss when the same article stated that the entertainment that night was to be provided by Darry Marx. I knew this was wrong as Eileen had chosen neighbour and local crooner Barry Marx to sing at the wake.

I read the article and was somewhat taken aback to learn that amongst other jobs and owning a boutique Eileen had worked at the Hard Rock Café. Somehow I could not see her wearing a t-shirt and cap but I thought, you can't judge a book by it's cover. That evening we entered the location of the wake, the Hotel Balcon, unusually for us we were early. The Balcon is one of Eileen's favourite places in the town and, like many of us, where she and Michael stayed when they first came to Cómpeta. We walked down the steps to the ballroom to be greeted by a bevy of reporters and photographers. One, clutching a microphone asked if we would not mind reentering the ballroom once there

To advertise call 637 028 873

At the end of the eulogy we were asked to stand to toast Eileen; as we stood a curtain was thrown aside and there was Eileen standing in front of an open coffin proclaiming “I'm not dead!” before thanking her friends and family for coming. The evening proceeded with the meal; it was very disconcerting eating my tropical fruit cocktail with a TV camera pointing at me. This is what it must be like being famous I pondered, before pondering some more about the cash and glamorous lifestyle and

deciding that, sod it I would happily be filmed eating my dinner in return for that. An early request from Eileen was Sinatra's 'My Way' and Barry (Darry) gave a fine rendition. A few of decided that 'Come on Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners would be a good and somewhat appropriate party song, so I connected to the hotel's WIFI with my phone and found the song on Spotify. We plugged into Barry's sound system and soon Eileen and many guests were on the dance floor singing and dancing to the 80s classic song. By the time the main courses were being served the press had drifted away their story secure and ready to be published. Eileen confessed she had been surprised by all the media attention and had found it all a bit overwhelming. It was a fun night and not in the slightest bit morbid, so thanks to Eileen and her family for making it so. A video on the El Mundo web site is just one of many reports of the party on the internet. http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/ 2013/02/10/andalucia_malaga/1 360489939.html I can be seen with my wife and a friend looking at the seating plan near the beginning of the video. No we were not acting and if it looks like I have a bald patch on the back of my head I can assure you it is just a trick of the light. Latter news of the story has spread to the UK with an item in the Daily Mirror newspaper and an exclusive in a magazine. I am just pleased to say that I knew the famous Eileen before her wake!

a DVD. We decided to press on early the next morning and zoomed up to Bayonne and the west coast of France. It was an unexpectedly attractive run as every house seemed to be covered in wisteria and/or lilac, and it brightened up the drive no end. At Eulalie en Born we parked next to the lake, and were entertained by a huge gathering of mallards who were very bold in coming right up to us in search of food. They were watched over from a distance by an aloof heron who pretended not to notice his noisy and insistent neighbours, but who was quick to swoop down afterwards to retrieve any morsel they had missed.

Winter Wanderings! Part 2

T

o describe the province of Navarra I could talk endlessly about the beauty of the woodlands, flowers, streams..... but instead of waxing lyrical (ad nauseam!) I'll move swiftly on towards the crossing point into France Roncesvalles, one of the most important junctions of the many pilgrim routes which crisscross Europe. With its monastery set amongst the dark trees up in this mountain area, it certainly exudes that "spirit

of place" feeling which you can experience from time to time. Next stop in France at St. Jean-Piedde-Port on the River Nive and, again, a well-known pilgrim site. The evidence of this was apparent in the scallop shells adorning the doors of the refuges, and in walking boots and backpacks piled against cafe doors while their foot-weary owners took refreshment inside. By this time the weather had closed in, and it became very cold and damp so we hunkered down for the evening with wine, chocolate and

On through the vineyards of Bordeaux and we were then at La Rochelle. Wow, and wow again! Coming into such a beautiful town as this was sheer delight. Fine old buildings, lovely shops set under vaulted walkways and, in the evening, the grandeur of a belleepoque brasserie, gleaming with chandeliers and mirrors. After this fix of the good life we took the bridge across to the charming Ile de Re - whitewashed houses with faded green shutters, chic shops fringing the harbour, quiet roads for walking and cycling, oysters all very sand dunes and salty air. I later found out that Johnny Depp has a house there. Had I known then I would, of course, have called in. But never mind, he missed his chance! As well as the "spirit of place" I also believe in the"spirit of food", and I just had to try some of the local crab soup. Delish! As we were driving off the island we saw many of the chocolate-brown shaggy-coated donkeys for which the island is famous and who wander about freely, taking absolutely no notice of the traffic. Back on the mainland, and further along the coast, we were in a landscape of fields and marshes in the region of Marais Poitevin. This area is intersected with canals, with flatbottomed boats being the most favoured and practical way of gaining access to the fields and

their crops. There are so many canals that the area is also known as "Green Venice". We then hit upon the small coastal village of St. Vincent sur Jard- quite unremarkable in itself, but pleasant enough for a walk along the modest promenade skirting the beach and sand dunes, although it was a bit chilly. We came across the entrance to the "Maison et Jardins de Georges Clemenceau"which said that the gardens were designed by Claude Monet. Clemenceau was the French politician who signed the peace treaty which marked the end of the First World War, and who spent his later years in this village. My husband said he would wait outside with the dog, who wasn't allowed in, and I said I would just have a quick look around. After buying my ticket, however, I discovered that you had to go on an accompanied guided tour - in French! We were only a small group, but that did nothing to quell the enthusiasm of the excellent guide, whose lively and dramatic performance lasted for well over an hour. My head was whizzing with the concentration of following his talk, but it was very enjoyable. The house itself is a very plain wooden building known as "The Shack", and the informal gardens are based on wild flowers and the

colour palette of Monet. All very delightful - the essence of which I tried to convey to my husband, who had been sitting outside in the cold all this time. I don't think he was convinced. We spent a day in the attractive medieval village of Malestroit, Brittany, and then, with the end of the journey in sight, pointed Merlin in the direction of St. Malo. But hold on a minute- not so fast. What's happened now? What had happened was that my husband had broken his dental plate (!) and was unable to eat- a serious problem I can assure you. Buoyed up by my French lesson at Clemenceau's house, I was on the phone to tourist information in St. Malo to find a dentist. Tim the SatNav man got us into the town - so far, so good - but then we discovered we had another flat tyre. Unbelievable! We were parked this time in a town square, and some very lovely Frenchmen tried to help, but to no avail. A case of calling out the breakdown truck this time, followed by a trip to the French equivalent of Halfords (guaranteed to make my husband see red!). They couldn't actually help, but directed us to someone who could. This fixed,it was back on the phone to call the dentist and make an appointment for the next day. In the meantime, ranged

husband "enjoyed" an evening meal of mashed food. When we walked into the waiting room the next day, I just knew it was going to be expensive - potted palms, a fountain, artfully arranged piles of white stones, white designer furniture - and it was! We both agreed that it was quite different from Padstow. Anyway, all mended, and ready to explore the town. St. Malo is an intriguing place. It is quite grey and sombre inside the town walls, the area known as Intra Muros, but with interesting buildings, shops, restaurants and galleries. I loved some of the street names - "Rue de Chat qui Danse" and "Rue de Pourquoi-Pas". The Maison International des Poetes et Ecrivains is one of the few remaining original buildings to survive both World War 2 bombings and a great fire in 1661. It is well worth having a look outside the town walls, where it is not quite so geared up for tourism, and where we found a great restaurant for a "last night"meal. This also cost an arm and a leg, but was fully justified in my opinion after all the trials and tribulations of the journey. The ferry crossing, I am pleased to say, passed without incident! In the book now in preparation, she turns amateur sleuth once more after encountering a dead body in an empty villa on the outskirts of the fictitious village of Benafuente. As readers of e.c.saunders’ earlier book, Kat Among the Pigeons, will

The author is offering the reader who can identify (by the closing date of April 30th) the most film references in that book the opportunity to appear as a character in the sequel. The author told us: “My first Kat Shakespeare Mystery, Kat Among the Pigeons had the heroine troubleshooting a multimillionpound housing scheme on a South London council estate when a skeleton turns up and she must juggle the project with a little amateur detection. One online review described it as a laugh-outloud book with an opening that sets the story off on a trajectory of bizarre characters and quirky humour. My new book is also a

comedy mystery. In my opinion there is not much published these days that is noticeably troubled by anything likely to put a smile on anybody’s face. I didn’t set out to write a comedy,” Colleen said. “The humour came about quite naturally as my characters progressed and began to run the story. People seem to like what they call my ‘quirky’ style, and comedy is fun to write.” Do you fancy yourself a film buff? Like the idea of seeing your name in print? now giving you 2 tins worth of “light” coconut milk. Use a tins worth and freeze the rest in a freezer bag for next time. Some people might question the use of potatoes but I find it adds to the heartiness of the curry and helps to thicken the sauce as the potatoes soften.

THAI GREEN CHICKEN CURRY Recipe by Andy Wilkes, Sugar and Spice and www.ingredient.es

T

his recipe is one of my favourites for ease versus the tasty dish it returns and includes a money saving tip as an added bonus! The recipe uses ready-made paste but if you have the time you can mix and grind your own but every time I have done this I find the results no better than using a prepared paste. Added to that, my Indian wholesaler sells 2 litre tubs of Patak's curry pastes to many, many Indian restaurants so don't beat yourself up over it; if it tastes good then go for it. Ingredients 1 tbsp of sunflower or vegetable oil 1 large onion finely diced 1 tin of coconut milk (400ml) 400g Chicken breast cut into cubes 50g Thai green curry paste (according to taste. See below) 1 large potato cut into 2cm x 2cm cubes

80 The Grapevine

1 tsp of fish sauce Freshly ground black pepper 1 handful of fresh basil leaves roughly chopped 1 handful of fesh coriander leaves roughly chopped I have put that the amount of paste to use is according to taste as approximately a third of the ingredients of the paste is green chillis. So adding more paste means making your curry hotter. Other pastes may vary in terms of the percentage of chillis. My favourite make of paste is Cock brand (no sniggering at the back!) although others like Mae Ploy are also good. Regarding the coconut milk, some people prefer to use light as it has less fat in it. Light just means there is water added to the coconut milk so I would suggest buying “full fat” coconut milk then mixing it well with 400ml of water effectively

Method Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onions and cook for about 5 minutes stirring regularly until they start to go brown. Reduce the heat to low and add the curry paste. Stir continuously to cook the paste through for at least a minute . Now increase the heat to medium high and add the chicken stirring to cover the pieces in the paste. Add the coconut milk and the potatoes and stir well to mix. Bring to the boil and add the fish sauce and then leave to simmer uncovered for 30 minutes or so. Add a good grind of black pepper and the coriander and basil. Mix well and check the sauce for flavour. If needed add a little more fish sauce (be careful not to overdo it). Leave to stand for 5 minutes and then serve with Thai Jasmine rice.

The end of the ski season is your best chance to catch the last of the snow and the first of the sun, but you'll be lucky to get the right balance - chances are that there won't be enough snow left or it will still be a bit chilly for sunbathing. ....Stay out Until 6am (and Beyond)? Spain's nightlife is famously late and long, but the best city for going all night (and all morning) is Madrid.

It's amazing how the muscle strength of a woman changes during the day... In the morning she's can't even open a jar of marmalade, while at night it's impossible to get a piece of the blanket... I work in McDonald's and a customer was rude to me today, so I got him back by not putting any Coke in his drink. Just ice was served.

Hungry? How many times have we all said, "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse"?

Our neighbour's dog shat in our garden, so my mum told me to get a shovel and throw it over the fence.

Now we're all moaning about it!

I went up to a homeless man as I came out of a pub last night and said, "What would you say if I asked you to come back to my house for a few drinks and a 3 course meal in front of the fireplace?"

I don't see what that solved, now we've got dog mess in our garden and the neighbours have our shovel.

Some guy knocked on my door today and said, "I have a parcel for your next door neighbour."

One morning, a Hell's Angel goes into a coffee bar and orders a large cappuccino. As he is about to leave, he asks the waitress for his bill. "Two pounds sixty," she says. The Hell's Angel produces 260 penny coins, drops them on the floor and leaves. This happens every morning for the next few days until one morning the Hell's Angel wants to pay with a fiver. Gotcha, thinks the waitress, who has been waiting for this day to get her revenge: she drops 240 pennies onto the floor. "Your change," she says with a smug little smile.

"I'd say yes," he replied. "Exactly," I said, shaking my head and walking away, "What is wrong with women these days?

Sudoko Answers from Page 74

I said, "You've got the wrong house then mate.

The Hell's Angel produces a 20 pence coin and places it on the table. "Another large cappuccino, please."
