Buy With Confidence From experience we can say that many properties that are for sale have some irregularities in their paperwork, however it is our speciality to eradicate them. Whether you are selling or buying you want to do so with a sense of complete confidence. Working with an impartial Lawyer we are therefore currently updating the Title documents to a good amount of properties, so that when you buy with us you know that the property is registered correctly. In February some very kind friends looked after the children so we could get away for the night. We went to Ronda and stayed in a lovely hotel overlooking the famous gorge. The restaurant at the hotel was recommended to us because of the view of the gorge lit up at night and the fabulous food. However, due to a too long a siesta we didn’t make it to our table reservation in time and instead experienced Ronda’s nightlife until 4.00am! We had a fab time and can’t thank our friends enough for giving us some time off from being mum and dad.. Thank you to a reader who emailed us and asked how do they find out the answer to the previous months “find the wine glass” competition. From now on we will post the answer on the Grapevine Facebook page after we have announced the winner . This will be usually around the 25th of the month. You can find us on Facebook by searching Grapevine Magazine Axarquia. Please remember to “like” us so any new information feeds into your page automatically. If you don’t want to join facebook drop us a quick email instead. Finally, this month we have a feature on the area around Lake Vinuela as now is a great time to explore, when its not too hot and when there are some glorious spring days. Enjoy and keep reading (and looking!) The Editor

The Junta de Andalucía has announced that it hopes to have clarified the situation for all the illegal property in the region within three months. The Secretary General for Territorial Ordination, Gloria Vega, said it was neither an amnesty nor indiscriminate legislation. The new legislation however makes it clear the cost of the process must be met by the owners, and in no case by local town halls. he eastern Indian city of Calcutta is to be painted blue, a local minister has said. Government buildings, flyovers, roadside railings, and taxis should be painted a shade of light blue, a minister in the ruling Trinamul Congress government said. Owners of private buildings will be also be requested to paint them in the same colour, the minister said. The capital of West Bengal, Calcutta is home to more than 14 million people. "Our leader [chief minister of West Bengal] Mamata Banerjee has decided that the theme colour of the city will be sky blue because the motto of the new government is 'the sky is the limit'," Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim told The Indian Express newspaper.

n American acrobat is to become the first person in more than a century to walk a tightrope over Niagara Falls after being granted rare permission. Nik Wallenda will carry out the stunt on the US-Canadian border this summer. It has long been illegal to carry out such stunts at the Falls because so many people have died trying. Canadian officials had originally blocked his proposal but relented, saying it would pay tribute to the history of daredevil acts at the site. Mr Wallenda, 33, was born into a family of circus performers and has been tightrope-walking since he was two-yearsold. He told the BBC he had dreamed of walking across the Falls since he was six and that his mother had made him special shoes with suede soles for the occasion.

newlywed woman in a village in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has won her struggle to have a toilet at her husband's home. Anita Narre left husband Shivram's home two days after her marriage in May last year because the house had no toilet. She returned eight days later after Shivram, a daily wage worker, built one with savings and aid from villagers. An NGO announced a $10,000 reward for Mrs Narre for her "brave" decision and forcing her husband to build a toilet. More than half-a-billion Indians still lack access to basic sanitation. The problem is acute in rural India and it is the women who suffer most. Shivram said he was not able to build a toilet at home because of lack of money.

mayor in eastern Russia has banned a humorous demonstration in which toys would replace human activists demanding a clean presidential election. The mayor of Barnaul in Siberia ruled that toys could not be participants in a demonstration. Two such "nano-meetings" of toys sporting tiny placards were staged in a square in Barnaul earlier this month. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, is tipped to win the presidential poll on 4 March. The Barnaul ban was reported by one of the Siberian activists, Sergei Andreyev, a member of the independent election watchdog Golos.

Sugar and Spice India

The Sales Team

The Big Boss

H

aving recently spent some time travelling in India it started me thinking how it would be to run our shop, Sugar and Spice, like a shop in a typical Indian tourist town. We’ll need to redecorate; we’re going to need tinsel and lots of it. And fairy lights, we’re definitely going to need fairy lights in as many colours as possible. Next we need to choose our resident Hindu God (a kuladevi). I like Ganesh the god of wisdom and prosperity, who has the added bonus of being half elephant (the top half). Krishna the god of love adds a bit of glamour by being blue, he is however well known for his flirtatious dalliances with milkmaids, which could be a distraction. Hanuman is a monkey god and although very popular, he’s a monkey which I can’t see being very practical in shop keeping terms. Shiva the creator and destroyer, dances on the devil and has lots of arms and three eyes, which could come in useful for shelf-stacking. He is well known for being a bit of a hippy, and lives in the Himalayas, so the commute to work could be problematic. Parvati, Shiva’s wife, appears on one day as a beautiful kind Goddess, on another the fiercest of deities, who demands sacrifices and wears a garland of skulls. She sounds like any other woman to me. Let’s stick with Ganesh, I’ve always had a soft spot for Ganesh, he’s kind of cuddly and I like that in a god. Next I’m going to need a tuk-tuk, or rickshaw. It

The Indian Helicopter

will be my job to cruise around town and round up wealthy tourists (anyone who is a tourist must be wealthier than me, so they are all fair game). I will woo them with my witty repertoire. “Sir you want a ride in my helicopter?” “My other tuk-tuk is a Rolls Royce” “Madame, please come, I have ABS, leather seats and a mini bar”. The commission only sales team, teenage boys, will need to be able to say, in at least 3 different languages, without pausing for breath the relevant equivalent of: “Sir where you come from?” “ Britain – David Cameron, Tony Blair, Princess Diana, William and Kate, London, Birmingham, Liverpool, UCL, Cirencester, lovely jubbly, okey dokey, David Beckham, Manchester United. Population 62 million but now only 61 million 900 and 99. Why sir? Because you are here. You wanna come and see my shop. Cheaper than Tesco’s Sir?” .

Then we’ll need the hard-core sales team. The closers. Pre-school age, in flip flops 3 sizes too big. “Mister you look at my shop Mister?” Fighting off any other toddling rivals with “Sir I saw you first Sir. Don’t trust him, he’s a bad boy” “Maybe later? Look at my face sir, you remember MY face, you come to MY shop”. Once the sales team have got them to the tuk-tuk the tourists will have to argue over the price of the journey because that is what the guide book told

them to do. We’ll start at 10€ and eventually agree on 1€. I’ve managed to squeeze 8 people into my tuk-tuk made for 4 (plus 2 of my friends, riding half a buttock each on either side of the driver’s seat. When we get to the journey’s end I’ll tell them that it was 1€ per person. So that is 8€ but I don’t have any change, so we’re back to the 10€ that I started at. And they’ll just pay up because if they don’t I’ll wave my arms around and shout and they’re English and they don’t like to cause a scene. In the shop we’ll have 1 person to open the door. Karen on the till, with one person to pack the carrier bags and a 3rd person whose job it seems to be to stare at the customers. Well need at least 1 person per section, so that is 4 more. If a customer needs help their job will be to call on a small nimble boy to provide it but under no circumstances to provide help themselves. Spare stock will be stacked under the floor, in the loft, under the beds and in every other available square inch. It will be accessed by the young lad through a series of portable ladders and death-defying leaps. The sell by date will give you a guideline of which decade the item should be sold in but shouldn’t be taken too seriously, it is after all only a guideline. If something looks as though it was made in the 1970’s it may well have been, it may also have been made yesterday, styles don’t change much (particularly styles in men’s jumpers and light fittings). None of the stock will be priced, the price will be determined when the customer walks through the door and based on what we think he can afford and whether we have had to pay (40% commission) to one or more of the commission-only sales team. The price will start at 5€ and increase in increments of 5€. We don’t want to clutter up the poor man’s holiday with coins. If we do our job right, he will spend his entire holiday in our country without even realising that coins even exist in our currency. Outside the shop we will have 2 sweepers; one to sweep the dust in one direction and one to sweep in back in the other direction. Although if we were Hindu’s working within the caste system we would have 1 sweeper to sweep and a higher caste supervisor to hit him with a stick when he missed a bit. Also outside the shop covering every square inch of wall, canopy and pavement there will be displayed everything that is sold inside the shop, which makes you wonder why we need an inside? Another young helper will be required to get up at the crack of dawn to create this display every morning, by the time he has finished it will be

To advertise call 637 028 873

almost time to start putting it away again. Andy will also be situated outside the shop his job will be the Big Boss Man. He will stand outside and do nothing. Occasionally he will shout at one of the staff. His friends, other local business owners will from time to time join him. Their sole purpose is to look important. As the customer leaves the shop the sales team will spring back into action. “Do you need a newspaper sir? Todo Patel sell very nice newspapers sir, good price, very cheap” If the customer can be persuaded that he needs a very nice newspaper Mr Patel of the paper shop will need to pay not only the commission only sales team but also Andy the big boss man an introduction fee. .

So, so far we’re employing 1 Big Boss Man, 2 sweepers , 1 display boy, 3 till staff, a door opener, 4 “helpers” an unknown number of young nimble helpers, a tuk-tuk driver and the commission only sales team. It’s quite a lot of staff for a village shop but it’s OK because the average wage for a shop worker in Asia is less than 1€ an hour. Also the price of a tin of beans for a tourist does start at 5€. Of course in the real world Karen and I would need to be men, because the women are too busy at home making chapattis and cleaning. Although home may only be one room, it houses 3 generations, so cooking takes a lot of time and as chemicals are beyond the budget of most families, cleaning takes even longer. So there it is our Delhi style shop. But oh no I foresee a problem. Here comes someone who wants to help from thousands of miles away. He is going to save us all. He says that our shop is a sweat shop and that we have to close down. We are over-crowded, we don’t have running water or air conditioning, our pre-school children should not be working and we don’t have health and safety rules. So we are all rescued. Now our 1 Big Boss Man, 2 sweepers , 1 display boy, 3 till staff, 1 door opener, 4 “helpers”, unknown number of young nimble helpers, 1 tuk-tuk driver and the commission only sales team are unemployed. They stay at home all day which with 3 generations living in one room which is also over crowed. Where there are also no running water, air conditioning or health and safety rules. And now our pre-school children will never go to school and learn about David Cameron, Tony Blair, Princess Diana, William and Kate, London, Birmingham, Liverpool, UCL and Cirencester and the population of Britain, lovely jdubbly, okey dokey, Cheaper than Tesco’s.

Preventative organic control: All of these pests can be prevented with weekly applications of 1% neem oil from March to November which will also prevent the following fungal diseases. Peacock Spot/Olive Leaf Spot, Repilo del Olivo, Spilocaea Oleagina: Widespread in all major olive growing areas, it causes dieback of twigs, defoliation and general weakening. Initial damage is barely detectable but, later, large dark brown circles occur often surrounded by yellow or pale brown halos. Spores are rainborne. Common during wet autumns/springs with temperatures oscillating between 10C and 18C; Drought limits the spread. Chemical control: two applications of copper fungicide (Maneb or Zineb), in autumn and early spring. Organic control: prune out affected areas. Verticillium Wilt, Verticillium del Olivo, Verticillium dahliae. Widespread, it affects many plants. Common in young olive trees; older ones seem to develop some resistance. Humidity helps the disease spread. It is estimated that some 30% of olives are affected causing leaves to wilt and fall. After repeated attack, entire trees can die. Affected leaves lose their shine, turning a dull grey then brown. Diseased branches also show a characteristic streaking under the bark. The disease enters the tree through wounds, either by insects or man. Chemical control: none known. Organic control: careful management and sanitation. Prune cleanly and it may help to seal wounds. Remove visibly damaged wood. If a tree dies, do not replant in the same spot for at least a year. Bitter Rot/Anthracnose,Aceituna Jabonosa, Gloeosporium Oivarum. Primarily affecting olives, it is also seen in citrus, almond, quince and strawberries. The attack is through damage caused by insects to the fruit; circular black depressed spots develop which are sticky. Under humid conditions a rash of orange spores can occur on the fruit surface. Chemical control: Two applications of copper fungicide (Maneb or Zineb), in autumn and early spring. Organic control: Prune to increase air flow,

drying trees more quickly in wet conditions. Prevent/control insect attack. Sooty Mould, Negrilla, Capnodium Elaeophilum. Sucking insects excrete a sticky sugary solution when they feed and this provides a bed for the sooty mould fungus. The coating of black powder prevents proper function and vigour is reduced. Chemical control: Clear the insect attack and the mould will disappear. Organic control: Encourage beneficial insects such as ladybirds and lacewings - they consume vast amounts of ‘sucking’ insects. Olive Knot,Tuberculosis del Olivo, Pseudomonas Syringae. Galls/swellings form at wounds on branches, twigs, roots and leaves affecting the function of the tree. Yield and fruit quality can be seriously affected. Infection happens during cooler weather, often in autumn, starting with a small gall which grows to 2cm across. The bacteria are abundant and exude from the developing galls. The problem is greatest after cropping, when the trees are ‘beaten’ creating small wounds, and after pruning. Chemical control: Autumn and spring spray with copper fungicide. Organic control: Try to avoid damage to the tree. Galled shoots should be removed during February to restrict the spread. The bacteria are wind-born so infection is particularly prevalent in windy areas. Special Spring Offer: For one week only, 6 March – 10 March inclusive, all our fruit trees will be discounted by 20%. r Rubi had always thought about having her own clinic. It was a dream which came true in January 2011 and now she has been open over a year. While she was working in hospitals in Spain she felt that she didn´t have enough time to talk to her patients which she found dissatisfying as she loves talking and explaining things! This could have been her mother's influence, since her mum was a fantastic teacher who has since retired. She also noted that patients who go to the radiologist to have, for example, an ultrasound or mammography are often very worried about what the result will show up and need to be kept informed. It appeared to Dr Rubi that other radiologists didn't explain much to their patients. Whereas she as a matter of course explains and talks through things clearly with her patients, so they can fully understand the results and any implications. Dr Rubi was born in Madrid but has been living, studying and working in many places such as in Spain, USA, UK and France. She speaks fluent English because she studied in the USA when she was 18 years old. She became a doctor in 1998 graduating from Granada University when she was 23. After further training at Carlos Haya in Malaga she became a consultant radiologist in 2003 at 28 years of age. Dr Rubi has worked in both public and private hospitals in Spain the UK and also in France .

She can speak fluent French as her father taught her the language when she was little. Her father is also a doctor who studied for several years in France and speaks perfect French. She is registered in the UK General Medical Council in the UK from 2005 because she has been reporting MRI from British Hospitals by telemedicine since this time. Working by telemedicine from home was a fantastic opportunity for her to take care of her two daughters who are 5 and 7 years of age. It was too difficult to have a family, work in a hospital as a doctor and have a husband also a doctor (Pediatrician)thus resulting with too many on-calls for the both of them. She sometimes goes to work in the UK, visting the Breast Units in different hospitals. She has worked as a Consultant radiologist in the breast Unit at The Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro and in the breast Unit of Medway Maritime Hospital, in Kent. Dr Rubi went to work in a French Hospital in July 2008 to July 2009 in the Caribe (Guadalupe Island, French Antilles), with her family. It was a great experience for the whole family. She was working as a consultant radiologist at the hospital while her husband took care of the girls….and the turquoise sea, and the palm trees!!So the experience of work and swimming in the warm Caribbean sea was both relaxing and exciting at the same time!

An Interview with

Sebastian Chavos 2011 was okay and at least it was more positive than 2010. There was a little more work than previously so within the general crisis that we are all suffering it wasn’t too bad. Q. Is planning permission still a problem? At the moment yes, we are still in the same situation. All this depends on the Town Halls. We hope that in the forthcoming elections that the Andalucian government will change it’s colour from red to blue together with some laws that will then allow us to continue some construction in the country areas, and we can all continue to survive. Q. Can you offer a one stop shop from consultation, permissions, building work to maintenance and rental of a property? Yes we can, and we also have property sales with some excellent properties advertised in the window display of the Construction Office that you may not find elsewhere.

C

onstrucciones S. Chavos is a well respected company based in Competa and owned by Sebastian Chavos and his son Samuel. This month we talk to Sebastian about the past year and his plans for the future. Sebastian owns a construction company and two second hand furniture outlets and is part owner of Country Properties Estate Agents all in the village of Competa.

Q. Firstly, let’s talk about your construction company. Your reputation is great in this area for offering quality work at competitive prices. How did you find 2011?

The Grapevine

40

Q. You work along side Julie at Solutions 4 U, how does this relationship work together? We have a great personal and professional relationship and have known each other since the 1980’s. We have our own companies but we interchange the services we offer for our combined clients. Julie can help me with our English clients and she also promotes her property sales from my construction office as well as her own. Q. You have some great employees namely Maria and Jorge in your construction office in Competa, what services do they offer and what languages do they speak? Maria speaks German, Spanish & English and is the company Secretary. Jorge speaks Spanish and a little English and is the Technical Architect for the company and he co-ordinates all the construction work involving the Plans, Projects, Antiquity Certificates and Architectural Reports.

Q. You opened last year a second hand furniture outlet next door to your Construction office and then expanded to a second premises. Expanding in a crisis market is impressive; tell me about this side of the business? It’s basically a re-cycling business, we have a large selection of furniture and electrical appliances – all things that some people don’t need and yet others can make use of. House Clearances? Yes we are willing to clear whole properties and also collect individual items. Examples of Stock? Sofas, Wardrobes, Tables, Bathroom Accessories, Decorative Items, Windows, Doors, Grills, Assorted Fittings, Tools -all kinds of things. Do you pay cash for any of the items or is it donated only? Yes we do negotiate prices for whole house clearances especially when people have bought or sold properties and the existing contents are

not required. And we also collect unwanted individual items when transport is difficult for the owner, and people bring items into the shop that they either want to donate or sell. Can you help if we are looking for something in particular? Yes of course, just speak to the attendant in the shop or leave a note of what you would like and we will keep and eye out for it. Q. How do you see your businesses developing over the forthcoming year? We hope that it will be positive and that each year will be better than the last. We hope that the current crisis will ease off and allow us all make a living more easily. Q. Any further plans for expanding your business into another different area? We would like to expand on the coast especially in the second hand business and also with the sale of shop soiled white goods.

worst, if we did crash, we must have a direct line to heaven. Head out of Goa and still blind faith replaces any kind of driving rules though a different set of Gods are protecting Northern Indians. Hindus believe in only one God, a universal soul called Brahman. Brahman however takes on many forms which are worshiped as gods or goddesses in their own right. Traditionally there are 330 million Hindu Gods which gives plenty of scope for protection. Garish scenes from the Vedas (the Hindu holy writings) decorate the side of every lorry and strings of Ganesh, Vishnu, Shiva and whole host of lesser gods hang from windscreens once again obscuring visibility but promising safe passage. Vehicles in India are right hand drive, which indicates that they should probably be driven on the left hand side of the road, in reality they are driven on which ever bit of the road seems most appealing at the time. The traffic at an average Indian intersection will include rickshaws (motorised or not) camels, lorries, some teeny Tata Nanos, at least one 80,000€+ super car and a sprinkling of cows all squeezed into 3 lanes and belching out fumes (especially the cows), it’s like a scene from the Whacky Races. There does seem to be a vague rule that size takes precedence, however not so long ago in Delhi I managed to choose a rickshaw driver who was blissfully unaware of this rule. As we stepped into the rickshaw (ironically emblazoned with the image of Tara the Goddess peace and protection) the previously mild mannered man tore away waving both fists, he bounced off a huge lorry veered into the path of an incoming rickshaw and screeched sideways up to the traffic lights where he leapt out of the rickshaw to wildly scream at the offending vehicles for being in his way. Andy and I sat in the back of the rickshaw too shocked to move with that totally English “isn’t this nice” expression on our faces. As the traffic lights changed and the traffic pulled off around us our driver calmly wandered over to the side of the road and had a wee, as he walked back to the rickshaw I turned to Andy in horror and said “he hasn’t washed his hands!” This reliance on faith for safe motoring skills is not limited to Asia. In South America corn dollies and Christian Martyrs every swing gaily

from every vehicle. Bedecking the outside, covering the inside and once again obscuring all windscreen visibility. Corn dollies are imbued with deep spiritual significance. They are woven every harvest and represent the essence of creation and destruction. Nowadays the Catholicism of the Conquistadors mingles with traditional paganism and corn dollies, to the horror of the Church, are often dressed as Christian saints. Why rely on one religion for protection when you can have two? And you need as much protection as possible when taking the bus from Bolivia’s capital La Paz to Rurrenabaque, it is not for the fainthearted …you have to be a believer. It is commonly known as “Death Road”. I say commonly, no one mentions this name when you’re booking the ticket for the 18 hour journey. The un-paved track has a 600 metres drop off one side and feels barely wide enough for one vehicle. Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson narrowly avoided death (and there is a God?) on the road when he met a car coming the other way on a particularly narrow section, as he pulled over the edge of the road ledge started to crumble under his wheels. Every precaution is taken to ensure a safe journey on Death Road; the busses are bedecked with corn dollies and saints. Stout Bolivian widows (their late husband’s probably previous passengers) wrap rosaries around their fists like knuckle dusters and scream advice at the driver who screams back at them, often turning in his seat and steering with one hand. The bus rattling and shuddering over potholes is enough to shake the soul out of every last passenger. I am told that the trip is beautiful although I can’t confirm this. After passing the first burnt out bus at the bottom of a ravine I completed the rest of the journey with my eyes shut. As the driver screeches round hairpin bends at 40km an hour I wonder if the praying, the rosaries, the corn dollies and the saints and martyrs are enough. Could the driver not go one teeny step further and try something a little unorthodox, like facing the front, clearing the windscreen area, keeping his eyes on the road and maybe even driving more slowly?

A Road Trip to Lake Vinuela and its surrounding area Why not take a trip to Lake Vinuela and visit the villages surrounding the lake. Take the Velez Malaga exit off the N340 and head inland on the A356. Lake Viñuela is a stunning fresh water reservoir, which has the largest capacity of any “lake” in the Malaga province. In previous years, Lake Viñuela has had the highest water level of any lake in Andalucia. The Lake provides the backdrop for some of the most spectacular views that inland Spain has to offer. The surrounding mountains are dotted with pretty white villages, and the sunsets are incredible. The area around the lake has been deemed a protected area to try and preserve its natural beauty. Coming from Velez Malaga you can take a right round the Lake on the A402 (signposted to Periana/ Alhama) and this road can lead you to the Vinuela Village turning which can be found on the right hand side. The village of La Viñuela is sheltered in the Alcaucín valley, surrounded by fields of olives, mangos, avocados and cereals but the name refers to a small vineyard or “viñuela”. This

friendly village was founded around an inn in the 17th century but has seen a degree of investment during the last few years which has helped to build a smart new town hall and a children's´ park. This village also has a lot of history; the 16th century parish church of San Jose still stands in the centre of the village, as does the Hermitage of the Virgen de las Angustias and the 19th century olive mill. La Viñuela local amenities include a supermarket, a pharmacy, a medical centre, a school, and a selection of bars and restaurants and don't be surprised to see local farmers selling their wares on the side of the road! Instead of turning off to Vinuela village you can continue on the A402 to the Periana crossroads where the area of Punete Don Manuel has grown. The village is set on a crossroads with roads leading from the coast and Velez-Malaga to Alcaucin, Zafaraya, Periana and the Province of Granada. For centuries travelers have stopped here on their way to different destinations in the Axarquia and beyond. With its close proximity to Lake Vinuela, in recent years Puente don Manuel has become an extremely popular area

in which to live. Satellite urbanisations and villas have sprung up all around to accommodate this growing community. A great day to visit the area is on a Friday as there is a local market at Chringuito Antonio which is found off to the right of the crossroads, signposted to Venta Baja. You could make a day of it in Puente Don Manuel by visiting the market, then stopping to browse in an excellent women's clothes shop, Louise Beauty & Boutique or have a haircut or facial at the Hair and Beauty Studio, do a spot of shopping in the large English Shop and then finish up with lunch over looking the Lake at Cantueso in Periana. These are just some of the activities available to you as there are plenty of bars, restaurants, takeaways both an Indian and fish and chips to wander into in Puente Don Manuel. In recent years Puente Don Manuel has become a popular area to live and now have a well established English community, and as such the area not only has bars and restaurants but also a dentist, veterinary clinic, gym down the road and a local bus service. If you fancy a change perhaps renting or moving to the area have a chat with Tina at Spanish Management. Continuing on from Puente Don Manuel you can either continue on the A402 to Zafarraya or take the left fork onto the A702 to Periana. The village of Periana is famous for the excellent peaches and olive oil produced on its land and lies on gently sloping terrain which descends into the Velez region, with La Vi単uela Reservoir providing its surroundings. Its

municipal origins date back to 1761, though the village was partially destroyed by the 1884 earthquake. Its monument of note is the Neomudejar-style San Isidro Church. Also, a multitude of archaeological remains have been found in the municipal area, notably those from the Paleolithic period at Cerro de Alcolea hill and the paintings in Marchamonas Cave. In Arabic times, the village's sulphorous waters were famous for their medicinal qualities; proof of this are Vilo Baths, which were still in use until the 19th century. Periana acquired municipal status in 1761, when San Isidro Labrador Chapel became a parish church and the village ended its dependence on Riogordo.

As mentioned above the village experienced a major tremor which occurred on Christmas Day 1884; with its epicentre in the Sierra Tejeda. It devastated most of the north of the Axarquia region, with Periana village worst with 58 deaths and the destruction of large areas of the urban area. History tells us that the task of providing rescue and assistance for the victims of the quake was extremely difficult. On 10 January 1885, King Alfonso XII visited the site of the catastrophe and showed immense concern for the plight of its inhabitants and helped to obtain aid with which to lighten the burden of the economic ruin which had affected many local people overnight. Over the next few pages we have focussed on a selection of the businesses we found in the Puente Don Manuel area to give you an idea what is there and where to go.

panish Management based in Puente Don Manuel has been operating for over 5 years now and the Company run by Tina Hall can provide both professional and personal experience. It handles house rentals, sales, and the management of these services from cleaning, furniture packages and building work. Tina and her husband Geoff came to Spain and bought a new build property that wasn't ready when they arrived in 2005 to live, despite being told it would be! They then had to rent for 5 months while they waited for their house to be finished. They learnt a lot in this time about house buying and rentals and how it shouldn't be done! Initially they took six months off to settle in but they soon got bored. Tina having worked in property rentals in the UK saw a gap in the market to do it right in the Alcaucin area. Her husband Geoff was offered work with H2O Countrywise and soon Tina worked with him

LT CONSTRUCTION R

etaining walls are technically challenging with many different factors needing to be taken into account, such as, soil type, location, positioning, design, drainage, size and wall type. Two basic fundamentals remain for all forms of retaining wall, a good solid foundation and the provision of adequate drainage. The retaining wall’s foundation needs to be able to support its weight and provide structural strength. The drainage system needs to be sufficiently robust to allow for any water to freely flow away, as the increase in weight and pressure applied to walling can become immense after rain. The weakest part of any walling is usually the foundation. If this is undermined through defects in the construction process or compromised by a lack of free flowing drainage, the result will invariably be a collapsed wall. The standard form of wall used when looking to retain a bank is a reinforced concrete wall due to the cost and durability. A plain wall can look very industrial and soulless but can be enhanced when dressed in stone or rendered and highlighted with

To advertise call 637 028 873

additional features. I frequently receive phone calls from people who have spent substantial amounts of money on retaining walls that have subsequently fallen down. This is due to insufficient experience and lack of knowledge by Builders that were recommended to them. Any wall should last the lifetime of the property and unfortunately in my experience this is seldom the case, resulting in high financial and emotional costs. .

The other forms of retaining wall will be covered in future articles. By visiting our website you will be able to see the many varied types of wall we are experienced in to meet the aesthetic needs and budgetary costs of this most crucial structural element of your garden. LT Construction should be your first choice when deciding on which approach to take in designing a retaining wall. Please contact LT Construction to make sure you get this most important aspect of a garden designed and built well. .

Culture Clash T

he t-shirt being worn in the photograph here could be the answer to the question “How do you annoy a Chelsea fan and Manchester United fan at the same time?” As an example of a confused culture clash it takes some beating. I took the picture on our recent holiday to India. The lad wearing the t-shirt was watering the plants at the apartment block we were staying at. I did consider asking him to pose for the picture but asking him to turn around so I could take a picture of him from behind so that I could mock him publicly later, did not seem an option. Instead I pretended to be taking pictures of the apartments and snapped him when he was not looking. I think a career as a paparazzi photographer beckons. This was not the first time I had used this method. Once in Cuba a very large lady was wearing a very tight pair of leggings across the bottom area was written “Don’t Touch”. So, I heeded the instruction and instead got my wife to stand next to her as I pretended to take her picture. One photograph I failed to get however was the back of many a garishly painted truck that sported the phrases “Horn Please” and “Use Dipper at Night”. I can only presume these were instructions to fellow drivers referring to driving etiquette as opposed to some kind of “nudge nudge wink wink” suggestion. Travelling around India it is easy to see British and other Western influences. Without going into the whole sordid past of the English in

82

India you can still see many colonial buildings, old Ambassador cars and (Ashok) Leyland trucks. MTV India shows American and British music videos and advertising hoardings and shop signs are often written in English; the latter often providing moments of hilarity. My favourite seen during my last trip to India was a menswear shop called Bum Chums. I know taking the Mickey here is a cheap shot, but Bum Chums! Superb. This is from a man who struggles to write in his own language (thank god for smell check I say). On that note, thanks to Nokia’s predictive texting this week I sent text that instead of saying “sorry to be fussy” actually said “sorry to be furry” Another good example of misused English was heard whilst in Goa. One evening we decided to try a different beach restaurant and when we arrived the waiter told us there was live music that night. The band was surprisingly talented and sang a host of hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s in the style of a band on a cruise ship. They kicked-off with a tune I instantly recognised as the Stevie Wonder song Sir Duke. I sat back in my chair waiting for the singing to begin, but when it did I was surprised to hear the singer doing a very passable Stevie impression. As the song progressed you could tell the singer, not singing in his native tongue, knew the sounds of the lyrics but not the actual lyrics. So it was a bit like listening to a drunk Stevie Wonder. Later the band began to play another familiar song; this time Down Under by Men at Work. As the line “he just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich” neared, my wife and I turned to each other sharing the same thought; what will the band make of the Vegemite reference? I will put you out of your misery: “he just smiled and gave me a leg of my sandwich”.

In the Lonely Planet to Rajasthan, Delhi and Agra guide we bought and took with us to India it states “There’s really no such thing, in India, as a ‘curry’. The term is thought to be an Anglicisation of the Tamil word kari (black pepper), coined by bewildered Brits for any dish that includes spices”. This seems to be written in a derogatory way; you can just imagine a team of Lonely Planet researchers sniggering to themselves as a foreigner wanders into a restaurant and asks for curry. If, as they suggest, it is true we coined the word ‘curry’, then surely us “bewildered Brits” have done the Indians and the rest of the world a favour. Surely using ‘curry’ is a whole lot easier than saying “oi Kalpesh, do you fancy going out for a plate of that spicy sauce-based dish that contains meat and/or vegetables”? You also often read that Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in the UK by chefs trying to make a dish to suit the British palate. So the fact that this dish appears on many – if not all – nonvegetarian restaurant menus must mean that as well as giving curry its name we are also enhancing the culinary offering of India. I jest of course. Despite the Westernisation clearly on display in India, the country still remains unique, the people charming and friendly and there are more things to do and see than there are pages in the Grapevine. We may not totally understand the diverse culture – such as a plethora of goats we saw wearing jumpers – but as the advertising slogan goes; Incredible India! Andy Wilkes

Sudoku Challenge A true Sudoku Master can complete the puzzles below in less than fifteen minutes!

Level: Easy

Management Lessons Lesson Number One A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered:"Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Management Lesson: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson Number Two A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

74

The Grapevine

Level: Intermediate

Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree. Management Lesson: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there Lesson Number Three, Four and Five A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him! Management Lessons: 3) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy. 4) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend. 5) And when you're in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!

BILLIES FAVOURITES!

After years of research, scientists have discovered what makes women happy. Nothing.

Got an e-mail today from a bored local housewife, 43, who was looking for some hot action! So I sent her my ironing. That'll keep her busy!

After a wild night of drink and drugs Bill woke up to find himself next to a really ugly woman. That's when he realised he had made it home safely.

Sometimes you just can't win. I thought I'd be a gentleman and hold the door open for the young lady. 2 minutes later she said, "Will you go away and shut the toilet door!!"

Paddy says to Mick, "Christmas is on Friday this year". Mick said, "Let's hope it's not the 13th then."

My mate has just hired an Eastern European cleaner. It took her 5 hours to hoover the house. Turns out she was a Slovak

Since the snow came all the wife has done is look through the window. If it gets any worse, I'll have to let her in.

I just found some naked photos of Miss Piggy floating in Kermit's pond. Looks like frog's porn to me.

Tampax have announced today that they will be replacing the string on tampons with tinsel. This will be just for the Christmas period.

Came home today to find all my doors and windows smashed in and everything gone. What sort of sick person does that to someone's Advent calendar... I've been charged with murder for killing a man with sandpaper. To be honest I only intended to rough him up a bit.

A lad comes home from school and excitedly tells his dad that he had a part in the school play and he was playing a man who had been married for 25 years. The dad says, "Never mind son, maybe next year you'll get a speaking part."

Just had my water bill of £175 drop on my mat. That's a lot. Oxfam can supply a whole African village for just £2 a month: time to change supplier I think.

2 women called at my door and asked what bread I ate, when I said white they gave me a lecture on the benefits of brown bread for 30 minutes.... I think they were just Hovis Witnesses.

The lead actor in the local Pantomime production of Aladdin was sexually assaulted by the gay genie on stage last night. To be fair the audience did try to warn him.

A bloke is driving along in his car when his boss rings up and says, ‘You’ve been promoted!’ This causes the driver to swerve. The boss rings up a second time and says, ‘You’ve been promoted again!’ The driving employee swerves yet again before hanging up. Then the gaffer rings up a third time and says, ‘You’re managing director!’ But this causes the bloke to swerve and crash right into a tree. The police officer investigating the accident asks, “What happened here?” “Oh,” replies the injured driver, “I careered off the road!”

one and I don’t want to give too much away except to say that in our planned concert we are hoping to “Spread a little happiness.” After a year without putting on a concert , “One Voice” the local group of four part harmony singers will be performing in the Museo de Artes y Costumbres (Museum of Arts and Customs) on Friday March 30th at 8pm. We hope to entertain our audience with a programme that will have something for everyone. There will be a variety of music styles, including choruses from the world of opera by Smetana and by Sullivan, a song by Paul Simon and extracts from the stage musicals Rent, Guys and Dolls and Mr Cinders. There will also be music by Karl Jenkins and Paul McCartney. Entrance is free. There will, however, be a voluntary collection at the end and any monies received will be given to two charities. We really would love to see you there so please come along and support us. They are available at Velez Malaga hospital Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 7pm and Friday from 8:30am to 2pm. Thirty three volunteers now offer free interpreter services to foreigners at Velez Malaga Hospital.

Local News First axargay café for gays and lesbians in the axarquía to start last sunday of February

A resident of torrox has reported that 100 of his beehives, valued at around €12,000, were stolen last weekend. When he visited his property, located between Torrox and Frigiliana, he found that 50 of the beehives had been taken, and in another 50, the panels inside have been taken out and almost all the honeycomb has gone. He has been keeping bees with his brother in the Axarquia area for several years and some of the hives were on his own land and others placed on plots with authorization from the town hall. He believes the thieves must know the area as the hives cannot be seen from the road and access to them is only possible via dirt tracks. However, it is not the first time this has happened, and two years ago his was robbed of beehives which were on a property in Almuñecar. Drunk Driver in Torrox Plaza A car driven by a three times over the limit drunk, who lost control because he was on his mobile, crashed his 4 x 4 into tables where tourists were having drinks in Torrox Pueblo Plaza. Tourists and locals were injured and a pet dog has since died of its injuries.

On February 26 the first monthly AxarGay Café was held in Bar Restaurant El Molinos in Los Ventorros (Comares). In a friendly atmosphere, homosexual men and women can come for drinks, to socialize, and meet new people. The AxarGay Café, which will be held every last Sunday of the month, is an initiative of Comares’ residents Bienvenido Cueto and Harrie Kuiper. When asked for the reason for the initiative Harrie answered:

Geoff Murrell Saturday March 3rdRestaurante La Vida, Cucador, Almeria

“There are a lot of gay people out there who have a hard time meeting other gays, especially if they live in the campo of Axarquía. They do not want to visit the gay hot spots in Torremolinos, because it is not their kind of scene or they think it is too far. And if they do not want to come alone, they can bring their gay friendly friends with them.” The idea is to be welcoming to gays and lesbians, bi-sexuals and transgenders alike. Their straight but gayfriendly friends are welcome to join in!
