The studio recording of Barei’s winning song on RTVE’s Eurovision 2016 website has some Spanish backing vocals, but they were removed for the live performance.

T NEWS IN SPAIN This months update

A

matador dubbed the “David Beckham of bullfighting” has been criticised after confronting a bull while holding his baby. Francisco Rivera Ordóñez posted the photo of him with his fivemonth-old daughter while practising with a bull calf to his 60,000 followers on Instagram. In the caption he wrote [translated]: “Carmen's debut. She's the fifth generation of bullfighters in our family. My granddad was a bullfighter as well as my dad. “My dad did this with me and I've done it with my daughters Cayetana and now with Carmen.” He later posted a photo of himself as a boy with his father, along with the caption: “History repeats itself. The best legacy alive, feeling, purity, honour.”

nimal welfare campaigners have condemned a Spanish fiesta where gangs of revellers throw dead rats at each other. Every year hundreds of people gather on the last Sunday of January in the Valencian town of El Puig to celebrate the life of St Peter Nolasco – a thirteenth century figure remembered for buying back Christian slaves from Moorish raiders – with bowls of steaming rice and beans, dancing and, of course, the “battle of the rats”. No-one quite knew when

and why the residents of the town added the hurling of rodents to the mix. It may have been because the pests would climb inside tasty treats around the town as they were being prepared for the festival. But everyone knows the protocol when one is hit by an aerial rat: pick it up and throw it straight back. Locals claim the rats are a nuisance and say they are killed humanely before being frozen and saved for the big day. The practice was banned in 2012 as a breach of Spanish animal welfare laws but carries on anyway. However, this year a campaign group has released a video of the festival calling for the tradition to end once and for all.

or the first time in Eurovision history, Spain has selected a song sung entirely in English for this year’s competition. After controversy leading up to the selection show televised on Spain’s RTVE national broadcaster, ‘Say Yay!’ got the nod from a mixed jury of experts and the general public after female vocalist Barei had performed the song in English. The upbeat ‘Say Yay!’ was among three of the short listed six numbers which was originally presented with purely English lyrics before it emerged that RTVE producers had told the artists they should include at least some Spanish in their songs.

he first known case of a pregnant woman carrying Zika virus in Europe has been confirmed in Spain. The Spanish health authorities said the motherto-be, who is understood to be 1314 weeks pregnant, brought the total to nine patients with Zika identified in the country. "One of the patients diagnosed in [the northeastern region of] Catalonia is a pregnant woman, who showed symptoms after having travelled to Colombia," the health ministry said, adding that all were in a good condition of health. Each of those carrying Zika had been infected abroad before returning to Spain. The epidemic, which has been linked to the birth defect microcephaly, began in Brazil last year, and has since spread to 22 other countries. The dengue-like illness is known to be spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. However, it has also emerged that the virus has been transmitted in Brazil through blood transfusions.

salesman roasted to death while sunbathing on a beach in Ibiza on the first day of his holiday, an inquest has heard. Neil Murphy, 43, paid £924 for a weeklong all-inclusive holiday on the Balearic island on August 12 last year. But the following day, horrified tourists discovered the Birmingham salesman lying motionless on a sunbed at the Mare Nostrum Hotel in Playa De En Bossa. They raised the alarm but hotel staff who went to his aid couldn't find a pulse. An inquest at Birmingham Coroner's Court on Monday confirmed Mr Murphy had died of heatstroke.

usually have their families and friends rallying behind to support them with food and water provided whenever the float pauses along the parade. Young and Old participation The Semana Santa festival really binds the old and young together; the great tronos have the different generations of people united in shouldering the task of carrying the float throughout the parade. There would be many who are walking alongside the float ready to take their place in relieving others who may be tired. This selfless act really unites the local community and families as they participate in this heavy task without complaints or murmurs.

SEMANA SANTA

A Somber but Meaningful Semana Santa in Malaga

S

emana Santa is one of Spain’s most celebrated religious festivals in the south of Andalucia. Semana Santa means the Holy week which is the most important festival in the catholic faith; it runs from Palm Sunday to the following week, Easter Sunday, with many processions happening in most of the days. Semana Santa is widely celebrated in the whole of Spain but particularly on a large scale in Malaga and Seville, where spectacular sights can be observed.

sobriety with religious confradias carrying a huge float which depicts a religious scene, all relating to Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The floats, or "tronos," are heavily decorated with colourful materials and candles that have seen many labourious hours of preparation before the procession begins. A band plays an accompanying dirge or music in accordance to the mood and setting of Semana Santa. At times, the tronos make a brief stop to serenade the public with a "saeta" or a solemn flamenco song.

Traditional celebrations At the start of Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Semana Santa festival, processions will be paraded down the streets of the city in

The tronos are physically carried by the float bearers with the objective of identifying with the sufferings of Christ; the sight invokes empathy of all witnesses regardless of your faith or religion. These float bearers

10 The Grapevine

Children who are too young to participate in the carrying of the tronos would run around the bands and floats collecting wax from the dripping candles to form huge balls, competing with one another for the biggest candle wax ball. Their simplicity and excitement brings an infectious joy to bystanders. Different Atmosphere Although the Semana Santa is celebrated in its awesome way for a whole week, it differs from the normal vibrant celebrations of other Spanish festivals, due to its religious implications. The atmosphere of this celebration is more somber and there is not the usual drinking and partying that one would associate with a Spanish fiesta. One can still enjoy the tapas bars and excellent local cuisine during Semana Santa, where the city seems so much smaller than it actually is with the huge influx of tourists. Harry Draco

here, the most magnificent has to be the 15th century Santa María la Mayor. It boasts of a beautiful tower that holds architectural pieces like the minaret of a mosque, which stood in its place previously. When the Christian re-conquest took over this town, this church was built over the mosque as their sign of conquest over the Moors. Besides that, there is the Fortaleza which is a 13th century Moorish castle standing on a hilltop at Arrabal de San Sebastián which is considered Velez’s oldest district. The castle’s main tower was purposely built to overlook the town in defense and is in excellent condition today. Views from the castle showcase the serene and beautiful countryside.

VELEZ MALAGA A Town with a deep History

V

elez Malaga may not be a popular resort at the moment due to its off track location but it is actually only 5km away from Torre del Mar, if you are visiting the Costa del Sol region. It is a town worthy of a visit, even if as a day trip as it is barely a 5minute drive from the coast. Overview Though it is not big, this town is pretty busy as the capital for the Axarquia region. It is commonly known as Velez, sitting on the River Velez valley which is beautifully surrounded with sub tropical greens. Velez is prospering as a commercial agricultural producer of vines, olives, strawberries, veggies and sugar cane. It is here that one can find the sweet grapes that are famously used to produce the world’s renowned Malaga

12 The Grapevine

Wines. History Velez has a deep history that originates with the Phoenicians and moved on to the Carthaginians as reflected in the many remnants discovered here. It is supposed that the infamous Mainake, the magnificent Greek city, was to have been located here and flourished under Roman rule for commerce and trade, taking on the name Menoba. The Moors occupation of this region for over eight centuries made it most famous as a commercial centre that was strategically situated. It became known as Ballix-Malaca which means the Fortress of Malaga; it was full of culture and commerce. Places of Attraction Among the many churches found

Here in Velez, you will find the famous hospital called San Marcos Hospital that was established in 1487 by Catholic Monarchs. Convents and monasteries are abundant here and are worth a look for their artistic beauty. These include the lovely San Francisco, St. Jose, Santa Clara and Las Carmelitas convents. There is also a 16th century church, Santa Maria church, built in Mudejar style that showcases a triple nave as well as an amazing ceiling. Besides that there is another 15th century Mudejar church, San Juan, that is worth seeing. An ancient palace has been converted into a municipal building; the Marquises of Beniel Palace is located in the quaint old section of San Sebastián that boasts of Mudejar architecture that displays a splendidly vaulted ceiling that can be found above the stairwell. Are all Town Halls dealing with the DAFO in the same way? The short answer is no – each Town Hall appears to have different requirements. Sellers need to contact their own Town Hall to be sure of these. Also Town Halls are applying different charges for DAFO certificates. How much is it likely to cost? The cost can vary enormously and depends on the individual property and the Town Hall. A ballpark figure is in the region of €3,000 but it may be considerably less or more depending on the area and the status of the property.

DECLARACIÓN DE ASIMILADO A FUERA DE ORDENACIÓN (DAFO)

I

n this article we cover issues which have been raised or come to light as we gain more experience in dealing with the DAFO and provide answers to some frequently asked questions.

We've never heard of this law – when did it come into effect? Decreto 2/2012 was introduced in 2012 by the Junta de Andalucía. Details can be found on their website by following this link: http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/b oja/2012/19/3?lr=lang_es It is only really within the last year or so that the law has started to be enforced in earnest as Town Halls were previously unable to issue DAFO certificates as their Plan Generals had not been approved by the Junta. The Plan General shows all of the land in a Town Hall's area and categorises it as urban, rural, protected or not protected. Most Town Halls have now had their Plan Generals agreed so they are able to issue DAFO

14 The Grapevine

certificates. Much of our experience so far has been with the Town Hall in Cómpeta where they are issuing certificates quickly and efficiently. What is the purpose of this law? The Junta requires Town Halls to 'legalise' all country properties (properties built on rustic land) thereby ensuring that records kept by Town Halls match what is actually physically on the ground. Why do sellers need a DAFO certificate? Although the law applies to Town Halls, increasingly lawyers acting for buyers are requiring sellers to obtain a DAFO certificate for their property. The DAFO certificate clarifies the situation of the property and confirms that there are no problems relating to the house or the land and gives buyers peace of mind that there is nothing untoward with property they are buying.

We've heard that not everyone has had to obtain a DAFO certificate for their property? It depends entirely on the lawyer for the buyer – most lawyers are now insisting on the DAFO but some are not. This means that sellers will not know whether they have to apply for a DAFO certificate until after they have found a buyer. For this reason, we advise all our sellers of the likelihood of needing the DAFO certificate so that they are able to factor this cost into the price they accept for their house. This prevents them from finding themselves in a situation where they may have accepted an offer only to find that they have an unforeseen expense as they near completion. Sally was weak, as she wasn't eating and I was unable to give her the new medication, as it had to be taken on a full stomach. She started to have fits and was peeing her bed. We took her to the vet once again, having made the heartbreaking decision that it might be best to have her put to sleep, but the vet informed us that her organs were fine and if we could just try to get her to eat and take the new medicine, there might still be hope.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Sally’s Story

T

his month, Lynn Hazelden has written an article about her experience as the owner of a brave little dog called Sally. Here's her story: Nine years ago we adopted a lovely five month old Jack Russell cross, who we called Sally. The first night we had her, she chewed my driving licence, several photos of our granddaughters, four CDs and the fringes on our Chinese rug. She loved to go for long walks and we spent many happy hours in the mountains of Cómpeta, taking her with us almost everywhere. Everyone loved her for her kind, sweet nature. About 6 years ago I noticed Sally was lethargic and the tops of her ears were bald, thick and leathery, so I took her to the vet, suspecting she might have mites. I was shocked when the vet told me she had leishmaniasis, a nasty disease that can affect joints and

18 The Grapevine

vital organs. He took a blood sample and warned us that if it had affected her liver or kidneys we might lose her. The week of waiting for the results was torture. Thankfully, when they arrived they showed her organs were unaffected, but she had to start an ongoing treatment of tablets and injections immediately and would need regular blood tests to monitor her progress. All through this time, Nina and Action for Animals were a great help, supporting us, offering advice and paying for Sally's treatment. Last year, Sally's vision started to deteriorate. We took her to a specialist on the coast but sadly her eyesight couldn't be saved and she is now completely blind. Then she stopped eating and was clearly unwell so we visited the vet again. A further blood test showed she had severe anaemia and the vet recommended we try a new treatment which was very

I started by mashing food and putting small amounts on my finger for her several times a day and soon she was eating on her own – soft foods like scrambled eggs and salmon fillet. Finally, she was able to take her medicine and gradually our lovely Sally was back to her happy self. She had another blood test, again paid for by Action for Animals, and everything was amazingly back to normal. Sally's been a brave little fighter. These days I'm her eyes and she relies on me for everything, but as long as she's happy and has a good quality of life, that's fine by me. We're more than happy to look after her. Thanks to our dedication and the financial help from Action for Animals for her treatment, we hope to keep our Sally for many more years to come. nique and specialist walking tours and mountain walking lodge From the Himalayas, to the Blue Mountains, the Andes to the Drakensberg, The Rockies to the Golden Triangle, the natural, historical and unique wonder of these spectacular regions is equalled here in Andalusia, and particularly in the Axarquia mountain ranges. David and I have trekked and hiked extensively across the world, and here, in the mountains surrounding the beautiful white washed village of Competa, we have found a walking and hiking paradise. And it is our mission to share and

teach about the immense history, the wonderful landscape, flora, fauna and wildlife of this splendid region, so that it may be enjoyed, understood and preserved. Preservation of this region is most important to us and we have started a programme to provide education about the environment here, free to children and their families in Andalusia, so that we can not only promote the area, but ensure that the next generation grow up appreciating as much, its importance in this little corner of the world. Working with Axareducacion, and the Ayuntamiento Park Rangers, we walk with children once a month, providing a fun and insightful day of information, games and prizes, finished off with food and

refreshments at our walking lodge, Finca Los Pinos. As we grow this programme so too will we grow the agenda, adding Spanish culture and Spanish and English language topics to the agenda. We hope to provide children with opportunity, knowledge and understanding, to empower them to maintain this 8th wonder of the world that is Andalusia! Born and bred in Africa, David and I love the outdoors, and have a global perspective on everything we do. Competa Hikes, is not only our business, it is our passion. We truly want to bring the historical, cultural and natural value of this region to as many

people as we can whilst maintaining responsible tourism, protecting the environment. And of course, naturally, we bring a little of our own African culture, as well as our experience from our global travels, to our walking lodge. This winter we have extended our log cabins so that they are themed to reflect our favourite places. The cabins are now decorated to be Andalusian, African and India, and we have extended the en suite bathroom in Cabin 1 to be a lovely large wet room with large glass frosted windows to provide that sense of showering 'outdoors'. Also this winter we have embarked on a project to build a luxury African Safari tent high into our grounds, with luxurious furnishings, colonial style, en suite slipper bath and ablution facilities, and an outdoor, but very private shower. This project does require us to follow the important planning permission process, so we are not

yet able to provide a timescale for completion but hoping we will be ready by the summer with this little piece of African paradise‌ secluded, wild, spectacular vistas, and very luxurious. We are providing specialist walking tours, right from our doorstep. Our walking lodge sleeps 20 people. We have superb, qualified walking guides, qualified in the British Mountaineering Association, that have also grown up in the region and provide specialist tours for bird watching, wild orchid viewing, medicinal herb tours and courses on how to grow your own medicinal herb garden in your kitchen!! They also provide Spanish mushroom tours, collecting and cooking, and many other unique tours of this nature. Finally our combination walking tour holidays aim to add culture and language to our guests achievements of their week here, adding Spanish Language classes

and cultural events and day trips to the walking itinerary. Our guests may like to choose a different course to combine with their walking tour, to get a taste of something different that they have not done before. For example, walking and bonsai tree cutting, walking and yoga, walking and painting course, waking and Spanish wine ourse, to learn about the regions and taste the wine of course! They can also choose from walking and sculpting course, walking and Spanish cooking course, walking and meditation and walking and massage therapy. This is our passion, this is our life, and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Sarah and David Mills www.competahikes.com competahikes@gmail.com 00 34 619 175 649

RECIPES FOR A THREE COURSE MEAL Three Great Spanish Recipes

Ajo blanco (almond soup) with melon The ideal spring starter, equally lovely as a refreshing lunch on a hot summer's day. Seasonal Spanish Food by Jose Pizarro (Kyle Books) Serves 4 60g crustless, day-old white bread, in rough pieces 750ml water 275g blanched whole almonds 1 garlic clove, chopped 12 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp sherry vinegar, or to taste Salt Âź melon, (kharbouza, cantaloupe or honeydew) deseeded and cubed 1 Soak the bread in the water for around 15 minutes until the pieces are soggy, then put the softened bread and the water in a food processor with the almonds, garlic and olive oil and blitz until smooth. Season to taste with sherry vinegar and

salt. Transfer to a lidded container and refrigerate until the soup is well chilled; this will take 2-3 hours. Chill the melon cubes at the same time. 2 Give the soup a stir and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Ladle into soup bowls and divide the melon cubes between them. Drizzle with a little olive oil. Pisto manchego (Manchegan ratatouille) Serve this flavoursome feed-acrowd stew from the La Mancha region with plenty of crusty bread, and a good bottle of Spanish red. 1080 Recipes (Phaidon) Serves 10 150ml olive oil 200g chorizo, diced 200g cooked ham, diced 1kg onions, chopped 1kg green peppers, seeded and diced 1kg courgettes, diced

1kg ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped Salt 1 Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the chorizo and ham and cook over a low heat, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2 Add the onion and green pepper to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Add the courgette and tomato, mix well, cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt, add the chorizo and ham and heat through for a few minutes. Serve immediately. water and really sweet sherry give them a depth of flavour that works much better with thick hot chocolate. Rachel McCormack, catalancooking.wordpress.com Serves 8 3 large eggs 50ml rose water 50ml Pedro Ximinez sherry (if you don't have this, use really sweet sherry or wine) 150ml milk Grated zest of ½ lemon 50g butter A pinch of salt 1 apple, peeled, cored and grated 500g self-raising flour 1 litre groundnut oil, for frying Caster sugar, for dusting For the hot chocolate 30g cornflour 1 litre whole milk 100g sugar A pinch of ground cinnamon

250g dark chocolate (at least 70% cacao), roughly chopped 1 First make the doughnuts. With a hand blender or using a food processor, whizz together the eggs, sugar, rose water, sherry, milk, lemon zest, butter, salt and grated apple. Once that has all blended add the flour and mix again and leave to settle for about 20 minutes. This dough freezes really well at this stage, so you can save some for another time, if you like. 2 Once the dough has settled heat the oil in a deep pan or deep fat fryer to 160C/320F. You can tell if it is at the right temperature by twisting off and rolling a small ball of dough in your hand and putting it in the oil. If it does not float, the oil is too cold, if it goes brown too quickly, it's too hot – so just adjust the temp as needed. Turn the doughnut over so that the

colour is even. 3 Remove the doughnut and place on some kitchen towel to drain quickly, then roll each in a bowl of sugar. Keep them warm while you make the hot chocolate. 4 To make the hot chocolate, dilute the cornflour in a small glass of the milk, then put in a large saucepan with the remaining milk and the sugar over a medium heat, and the cinnamon if you are using it. 5 When the milk begins to boil, add the chocolate pieces and stir them until dissolved, then add the glass of milk diluted with cornflour and stir until thickened. Serve immediately with the bunyols.

cultural.

What training do you have? We come from different professions: Daniele is a Luthier, I am a Master of Visual Arts. In our work as craftspeople we see the value and get results from slow and planned processes. This is applicable every day in our workshop at the ice cream parlour. In addition to studying on our own, we both perform specific training with artisan Italian gelato ice cream teachers, Daniele specializes in Gelato and I am dedicated to the pastry. Last November we attended a course on ice pastry. Daniele has just returned from Sigep, the most important Italian fair in the ice cream sector.

What do you like about Competa? We like the friendliness of its people, its climate, its natural beauty and cultural diversity. Why did you open a Geletaria? When we came here we said, there is everything, but it’s lacking an ice cream parlour. We both come from countries (Italy and Argentina) where the ice creams are known, appreciated and consumed throughout the year. It is the spirit of the people, its authenticity and the proudness of their traditions, which inspired us to produce a product with the same characteristics: using quality products, selected raw materials, milk and fresh cream, seasonal fruit, pure nuts paste to create healthy, natural and artisans produce. We liked the idea and worked on it for a couple of years, creating the business plan, its

image and design whilst studying and learning about the industry. The Gelateria is 100% ours, our imagination and hard work.

What did you do before the Geletaria? The list is long, before and after Spain. We learned, taught and we both worked hard. Daniele continues his work and I will return to painting when my little girls will allow! ¿Siempre quiso ser dueño de su propio negocio? Daniele siempre había trabajado por su cuenta, y yo me acercaba a la edad en la que ya no te gusta que te den ordenes, así que... Did you always want to own your own business? Daniele had always worked on his own, and I have approached the age when you no longer like to be bossed about, so ...!! When you are not working what do you do for fun? It's hard to make time for yourself with a business and two little girls, when I can I like to take care of my garden and create in my paintwork. We would like to thank our customers for the trust they have placed in our business, the people of Cómpeta, friends who have supported us, the family that helps us, the girls who work with us every day. That is what Creative Property Marketing do. Some of their sellers prefer email communication whilst others prefer the telephone. Some sellers may require help with paperwork and others do not. Equally, some sellers want help with a valuation whilst others have a fixed idea of how much they want for their home.

CREATIVE PROPERTY MARKETING Foreign buyers search for Spanish property on-line…

9

9% of all foreign buyers start their search for a home in Spain looking online at the most popular websites such as Zoopla, Prime Location, Kyero and Think Spain – these websites have the best selection of Spanish properties for sale. Historically, sellers of property in Spain did not have access directly to advertising on many of these high profile websites. Three years ago Creative Property Marketing changed this. Now, Spain's most creative private sales company go from strength-to-strength, building a large client base of happy sellers. Helping their client's find buyers without using an estate agent – selling privately now works! Every day, more and more sellers approach Creative Property Marketing to ask for their help in marketing their property for sale. A high percentage of the sellers approaching Creative Property Marketing for the first time come from recommendations (from those who have successfully sold their home privately). For the sellers, not paying commission when they sell their property is a real bonus. This can save sellers an average of €10,000 or more! Most sellers want… · An advertising campaign that suits their property · Professional and friendly support

30 The Grapevine

at all stages · To see their home advertised on the best websites, attracting buyers from around the globe · A sale! The last one is pretty obvious but selling privately is now a genuine alternative to using an estate agent and look at the savings that can be made! In the UK and across northern Europe, selling and buying property via the Internet is considered normal. Few buyers walk into an estate agency today, most go straight onto the property portals to see what is available in their price range. These buyers think nothing of viewing properties directly with the sellers and why should it be any different in Spain? Times have changed with people seeking solutions for everything via the internet. This is why finding a buyer for your property is likely to have come from a search they made on-line. On saying that, Creative Property Marketing believe there is a balance to be had. The on-line solution has to be right but in their opinion, it must be mixed with an open and friendly service that has a 'face' and is personable. There is no reason why an internet based business cannot communicate well and be approachable with their clients giving a bespoke service to each seller.

Producing the most superb property description possible for each home and loading it onto the leading property portals is the most important thing. How Creative Property Marketing work with their sellers to get to this point does not matter. Some of their sellers don't even use a computer, whilst others are so technically minded they produce a video. There is always a way to make it happen even if they want professional photography taken. Creative Property Marketing simply want to ensure their clients have the best opportunity to find a buyer. The Spanish property market is recovering and 2016 has taken off in a very encouraging way. Creative Property Marketing believe sellers should take advantage of this by embracing modern methods to sell their property. If you have a property for sale in Spain, why not visit the website of Creative Property Marketing, email them or phone - it could be the most enlightening thing you have done for a while. A LONG WEEKEND IN SEVILLE A City that never sleeps? By Rose Jones

T

o celebrate our first decade as a couple, we decided to romantically go to Seville, for a long weekend. Will booked a hotel, and we went by train, (a cheap, convenient and comfortable trip) and then set off, confidently, from Seville station to find the hotel on foot. The on-line booking had stated, alongside an indecipherable map, that it was very close to El Corte Ingles. We studied our inadequate little tourist map; we got directions from local people, who gaped in amazement when they realised we were walking; we trudged through a steaming early afternoon to reach El Corte Ingles, arriving damp and grubby and very ready to rest and recover. Problem – the hotel was not there. The on-line booking service had neglected to mention

46 The Grapevine

that there are three Corte Ingles’, all well spread out. We got there in the end and collapsed for an overdue siesta, while the sun attempted to melt the pavements. When we came round, I opened the curtains to check our view, and was startled to see we were immediately opposite the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan – one of the football stadiums. I did mention that my fella had booked the hotel, didn’t I? He insisted being right outside a football stadium was just a …handy co-incidence. Perhaps they run tours? Exploring Seville as a pedestrian in summer isn’t ideal. At least the centre is crowded with tapas bars, all around the Cathedral and near the river. Stray from the central zone though and you soon discover your mistake - you scurry

from one watering-hole to another, and then wonder where all your money went. Knowing already that the theme of the trip would be heat, I picked out the shortest dress I could possibly wear without being arrested, to hit the streets. I didn’t stand out from the crowd though – there was no crowd. With the mercury rocketing into the 40s the sensible Sevillianos were no where to be seen; the parks we walked through (after I had bravely suggested a shortcut) could have been in Australian Outback, with their exotic looking trees and deserted atmospheres. The ironic cackling laugh of a Kookaburra would have been perfectly appropriate We reckoned the ‘centre of the centre’ to be ‘La Giralda’ – a strange little weathervane that tops the minaret of the old

mosque, now incorporated into Seville’s cathedral, which, according to our guidebook, is now the world’s largest church. We didn’t go in, being too hot, lazy and mean to face corkscrewing up for the view. Instead we found our way to the Alcázar – Seville’s Moorish Castle, and nothing like as big or famous as Granada’s Alhambra, but beautifully preserved, stylish and cool. I really recommend this – it’s really beautiful, its halls a pleasure to walk through, and its gardens restfully cool and green. We went to look at the river and the famous ‘Tower of Gold’ – the counting house still preserved where, in the days of the Conquistadors, most of South America’s Aztecs’ gold was shipped into Europe. Given that this would have been built in the 1700’s I wasn’t expecting St Paul’s Cathedral, but after some hard detective work was surprised

To advertise call 637 028 873

to find a very weedy non-descript dull block with a tatty old sign indicating it’s huge historical significance. What a boring end for the exotica of the New World! I was looking forward to seeing some nightlife. Seville, after all, may only have a population of 710,000, but it has a reputation for flamboyance as the capital of Andalucia. Planning to fit in with local custom we hit the bar-rich barrio Santa Cruz about 11pm – and found it just opening up. Tapas bars? It’s packed with them; every gloomy grilled holein-the-wall was being lit and unchained to reveal a shiny fridge-topped deck, overhung with pig’s legs and bestrewed with bunches of oranges. We were overwhelmed with choice – too many venues, too many tapas, too many drinks. The trick was not to try to find a restaurant, but simply to graze from bar to bar

eating all night, and watching the world go by. And here at last - as we feeble old Brits were keeling over with fatigue - were the locals; all the bars and restaurants really humming to life by, oh, about one in the morning. If you have had enough tapas about that time, you can try crossing the river – there are a load of restaurant boats moored along one bank, which serve wonderful fish dishes in a very romantic setting. Don’t bother going early – I don’t think they opened till midnight. But you needn’t worry about getting cold – the street thermometers were recording 30 degrees at 1am – so turning night into day makes good sense. It’s a beautiful city to visit – we must go back – maybe at a slightly more sensible time of year next time. And maybe next time we will find out when the Sevillianos sleep.

Heading for the Hills Rose Jones explains why she's resolving to get her walking boots out…eventually

W

alking? Why? You're not fat!” This was the reaction to our New Year's resolution, for a walk a weekend (more or less). I didn't like to turn down a compliment, but “not fat” doesn't mean “fit”. Besides, there is more to walking than turning fat to muscle; there is sunshine and space; seeing the countryside; time out and even time together. Cheap, free entertainment – what more could you want? Setting yourself a new task per New Year may seem silly, but then it's as good a time as any to decide what you want to change; and after the party round and mayhem of Christmas, that timeout bit seemed a great idea. are a bit silly. Of course, like most resolutions, ours started well then wobbled a bit. Our first walk got halfway easily; then our guidebooks authors got bored and put in something like “Find your way home!” We learnt a bit of terrace mountaineering – stranded among the avocadoes we had no choice. Then there was the rained off walk (my fella grumbling “I knew this'd happen”

56 The Grapevine

as we squelched home); the walk interrupted by water diversion walk; and the didn't quitehappen-walk where, five minutes in, we found we were passing a cortijo full of friends and ended up spending the afternoon enjoying a few beers with them. But the hills here make such wonderful network of valley folds and finger ridges, linking the puzzle of white town to white town that the more you go out the more you want to. When I was (a lot) younger I walked in Scotland, Wales, the Lake District and the Peak District, with all the effort of travelling to them and putting up with cold weather, wet weather, wet and cold weather, filthy weather, freezing weather and walk called off for safety weather. On the edge of the National Park, at the gateway to the Sierras Tejada, Almijara and Alhama, enjoying weeks of clear skies, I'd have to be crazy to pass up the chance of getting out in the country. From Frigiliana to Torrox, from Sayalonga to Sedella, the Sierras offer superb walking country whether you want a slow stroll or a full day's hike.

We were surprised to find the walks didn't turn into a chore: rained off weekends were a disappointment, not a relief. I started to want to race to get in the long walks while we could – late winter and early spring before the heat set in. Of course, the Spring and Autumn monsoon-like rains would dampen anyone's enthusiasm, but the clear days couldn't be better. It's warm enough to enjoy, but cool enough to pant uphill, and the views, which are absolutely brilliant, aren't hidden in the summer heathaze. Walking gives you free time: time spent outdoors, time away from work and daily worries. Walking gives you a sense of space – the chance to explore this extraordinary countryside and the fantastic, incomparable views. “Walking?” said my mother-in-law. “You don't want to do that. You never know who you'll meet!” It's true that, given perfect-season meets perfect-place, you'd expect to be fighting for leg room. I remember on a sunny bank holiday almost having to join a queue to walk along Striding Edge

in the Lake District. But not here. We met maybe three other walkers, a farmer and a couple of goatherds. True, I saw the odd party of walkers from a distance. But with so many possible routes, there really is space for everyone. We picnicked by Río Cájula and heard only the water; we rested above the Fabrica de la Luz and heard only the gentle hum of bees. We couldn't convince my mother in law though. “We don't see anyone all day! We're lucky if we see a goatherd! You can't imagine how peaceful it is!” we told her. “Ah, but that's when you need to worry,” she replied. “Next minute there'll be hordes appearing over the hilltops, like in Zulu when they all suddenly appeared over the top, at Rorke's Drift!” There's not much you can say to that. Still, film fantasy aside, all this peace and quiet has made us attempt the impossible: behaving sensibly. Well, more or less. I admit to “off-roading” – map-less and fancy free in a macho, “who needs a map when you can aim up-hill” moment. It was great fun, but very, very steep. We scared a local goat-herd when we

To advertise call 637 028 873

appeared from nowhere: when he recovered he told us off good and proper: “Muy peligroso; muy peligroso!” and insisted we should return the long way round. We only walked about 5 km and came back shattered. My ankle hadn't appreciated the orienteering (I limped for a few days) and we were both pulling bits of prickly thorn bushes (they can get right through jeans and socks as if they're not there) out of ourselves all week. So, now to be sensible. I aimed to wear a layer I could decently take off and to carry a layer to put on. We took map, compass, torch, (mini) first-aid kit and mobile (though that was out of range most of the time. We normally stuck to the main routes, always took a snack (oranges, dried apricots, bananas) and often indulged in a whole picnic. I'm not sure the picnic bottles of wine (our haversack has a wine-bottle shaped pocket) was sensible, but we always took water. My partner being a strapping young thing, I'm not the one getting weighed down! Oh, and, absolutely essential, a camera. Have I mentioned the views?

All this being sensible didn't stop us doing more than we planned or less: there's no point getting overtired or cold if you can short-cut back; no reason not to go on if you've time and energy for a few more miles and you're having fun. So did we keep the New Year's Resolution – a walk a weekend? Did we hell! By March I found that with every walk I seemed to be getting less fit, being more tired and taking longer to recover with every week. And then I found I was pregnant. Walking trips were, per-force, curtailed or postponed. That was a good two years back though, and I was just talking my husband into getting out there again. My brother is due out in Spring, and he is as mad as a goat; maybe we could arrange a babysitter and go out walking with him. Where are my walking boots? Or…maybe I should be less ambitious, or I'll have to postpone again. I might try finding some pretty but easy walks to share with a two year old, for the time being. Yes, that's it – my tame new years resolution. What's yours? Rose Jones

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

The most recent will be aired this September on Channel 4 and is called “Homes by the Mediterranean”, presented by Charlie Luxton. The film crew sailed with Stephen and his wife Maggie to experience one of their excursions and I am sure, talking from personal experience, they all had a fabulous time ... it will

be great to watch on TV. Stephen is originally from Essex where, for 25 years, he ran a successful manufacturing business. However, when business began to slow, mainly as a result of the sector moving the manufacturing to China, he decided he wanted to create a new life. He owned a boat on the East Coast and he sailed whenever he could in the UK as his hobby and passion. So his dream was to make a business out of this hobby, but in the sun! 10 years ago that is exactly what Stephen set out to do. Once in Spain, he bought an ocean-going yacht and spent the first couple of years sailing the whole of the southern Coastline exploring, researching and having fun. Then 8 years ago he set up Sail and Stay from Marina del Este. This part of the coast was chosen due to the many beautiful

Initially excursions were on the original yacht but 2 years ago, Stephen sold the old boat and purchased a bigger Catamaran which is perfectly suited for his excursions and cruises due to its large decks and spacious acommodation. Sail and Stay now operates with 3 sets of crew and there is a choice of excursions throughout the day. Stephen’s two favourites are the Breakfast cruise where dolphins can often be seen and the Sunset late evening cruise. More information about all the excursions is on the Sail and Stay website along with an online booking form. Stephen urges you to please to book online where you can see all the available dates, times and places on the various excursions. But a word of warning ... Stephen & his crew are always fully booked in the high summer months and have to turn people away each year, so to avoid disappointment, it is recommended to make an early reservation ! I asked about plans for the future of Sail and Stay and the reply was to build on the success of the current business and invest in a second, bigger catamaran. This would be for longer cruises, with Stephen and Maggie living onboard and exploring the Mediterranean with a new website to show their current location and their intended next route. Guests could then fly out to join them for each leg of their passage, staying for a week onboard. A great idea, and sure to be another great success ... watch this space ! And don’t forget also to keep an eye out in September to see Sail and Stay on UK television! See advert opposite!

After the 4th crossing, the path takes you up to a wide track end below a ruined farm. On the right there is a sign saying “Rio Camino” and pointing to a terraceedge path, which you take with some care as it is narrow in parts. This path soon heads into the natural park and back down to the river. At the end of the valley you can now see a hill neatly planted with olives with a farmhouse atop, which you'll pass later on. You cross the river for the 5th time on stepping stones (I saw a wild boar here!). You head up into beautiful pinewoods – have a look around – before you come down to the stream for the last crossing. This is just below a little ruin. On the way up to it you find a plaque on the rocks dedicated, in Spanish and English, to Arthur Makin, an English walker who loved this area and died walking here. I think it's a touching tribute to someone who appreciated this lovely valley. Now, the path takes you uphill and away from the Cájula. The change in vegetation as you get uphill is dramatic; suddenly you're in “maquis” with gorse, thistles and herbs all around. You are walking up a tributary's valley and cross it after about 10 minutes (10 paces on you can look back at its waterfall). Another 5 minutes and you are heading towards another ruin, but before you reach it the path zigzags uphill to meet a proper track.

The Cájula Valley Walk

6.5Km – about 2.5 hours.

L

ast month, looking to stretch my legs but short of time, I took a walk up the river valley from the mill below Canillas and back. The mill sits where the “Río Cájula” and the “Río Turvilla” meet. These “rivers” are mere streams, though in 2009 after very heavy rainfall they flooded, here and in Árchez, on Christmas Eve. What a contrast with this dry winter! I parked up near the mill (there's space), turned my back on it and walked upstream, along the farmer's path beside the river. This path brings you into a valley banked by small terraces interspersed with fingers of natural park: you walk beside avocado, lemon, and orange trees, while the bubbling stream flows through brambles thickets, stocks of giant cane, and great cathedrals of oleander, which will be covered in hot-pink flowers in summer but are now seeding. There are six stream crossings: most are a mere step though one or two need a step onto midway stones and a wary eye on the brambles. After the second, there's a big sand-coloured cliff and, if you look about, massive boulders in the river bed that tumbled down in the distant past. There are wildflowers everywhere: strange birthwort, pretty fumitory, glorious yellow broom. There are orchids: I've seen bee, dark bee, sombre bee and woodcock orchids here, but none after this dry winter. You might be luckier in March.

62 The Grapevine

Now for a relaxing stroll! You turn right and follow the track, passing the Hill-top farmhouse you saw from the valley. You can look back over the valley you have walked through. The almonds were still in flower when I went and lovely big violet-winged carpenter bees were busy at the flowers. As you come back into line with the Cájula you cross a little bridge surrounded by poplar trees and then another over a second rill; you then head gently uphill on the track taking back towards Canillas on the opposite side of the valley. Simply follow the main track. I found a chunk of olive wood beside it that was shaped like a seat so I could stop for a brief snack in comfort! You are now going back above the valley, rising all the way. You come to a sharp bend to the left and see Canillas on the hill opposite. This means the mill is almost directly below: all you need to do is get down to it. A path leads off straight from the bend veering over to the right and zigzagging down. It is steep so be careful. This comes onto land the owner has recently cleared (for planting new olives in) and you have to zigzag on this looking for the cairns that lead you back down to the path again – this is quite tricky but remember the path stays over to the right and persist (don't try to get down “off piste”, you need the path. I did it (although there was a bit of cursing), and came happily home with the last of the golden winter sunlight still on the hilltops, after a very enjoyable walk. FLAMENCO How to dance Flamenco

F

lamenco is one of the most popular and characteristic feature in Spanish culture. The word Flamenco is a tripartite art, involving singing; the song is called as Cante, dancing named as Baile and Guitarra the use of guitar, all being used simultaneously. There are many different types of pieces within flemanco, all having their generic names like, seguiriyas, soleares, alegras, malaguenas, fandangos, zapateado, rondena and many more. Each one of them has a mood and rhythm. Flamenco dancing is characterized by colorful costumes, intense movements, stamping of the feet (zapateado), and clapping of the hands (palmada). History: The origin of Flamenco is thought to be the mixture of at least four cultures as; Gypsies, Moors or Arabs, Jews, and the Andalusians. It has been considered to be originated particularly from one of the

68 The Grapevine

Spain’s province--- Andalusia. Between 1765 and 1860, the first Flamenco schools were created in Cadiz, where the dance started to have a firm position in ball room dances. Early Flamenco is thought to be purely vocal, with the clapping of hands, toque de palms. Then during 1869-1910, the definitive form of Flamenco was developed in the café’s (café cantantes). From 1910-1955, Flamenco singing came in the form of “opera Flamenca.” From then, the Flamenco was developed all over the world. Flamenco music: Flamenco music is believed to be originated in the early 19th century from canto hondo( deep song) of Andalusia, accompanied by a guitar. Flamenco music is characterized by a particular body of song, dance and guitar music. The Flamenco song is based on a particular group of modes with Phrygian characteristics. The accompaniment is usually

played on a guitar taking three styles; rasgueado (strumming), paseo (lively melodious passage work) and falsetas (improvised interludes). Forms of Flamenco Expression: Flamenco is expressed through the toque, the playing of Flamenco guitar, the cante (singing), and the baile (dancing). Toque: The first Flamenco guitars are believed to be originated in Spain around 15th century. The traditional Flamenco guitar is made up of Spanish cypress and spruce. It is lighter and smaller in size than a classical guitar. It gives a more sharp sound. Cante: Cante is often called as the heart of Flamenco. The verses of these songs are really beautiful. Flamenco song can be categorized in number of ways as, Solea, Siguiriya, Tango and Fandango. Baile:

fresh air and increased oxygen helps release the feel-good brain chemical, serotonin – meaning your outdoor training sessions not only help keep you fit and healthy, they put you in a fantastic mood too.

THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISING OUTDOORS Advice from Karen Parnell, Fitness Coach and personal Trainer

L

iving here in southern Spain we enjoy the fantastic benefits of over 300 days of sunshine per year, healthy Mediterranean diet and hopefully less day to day stress. We all want to stay healthy and this need does not stop when we live in such a great environment, but unlike countries with a colder climate we have the luxury of exercising outdoors all year round. Take for example running. Running is extremely popular and a lot of people choose the treadmill over running outside as they perceive that they will be less prone to injuries. Recent studies have shown, however, that on a treadmill the joints and ligaments are put under a lot more stress due to the repetitive nature of running on the same surface at the same angle for mile after mile. This contrasts with running outside where every step is different which strengthens your joints and ligaments and also improves balance and activates other area such as your core muscles for an all over body workout. There is also the added

76 The Grapevine

benefit of wind resistance outdoors which enables you to burn more calories in the same amount of time. Another study showed that on a treadmill the perception of speed is distorted so runners tend to run slower than if they were running outdoors. There are other great and surprising benefits of exercising in the great Spanish outdoors: 1. It's good for your mind and your body. We work out mostly for the physical benefits, but what about the mental boost? A research team from the Peninsula College of Medicine analysed 11 trials including more than 800 adults and found that outdoor exercise was associated with increased energy and revitalization, as well as decreased confusion, anger, depression and tension, when compared with exercising indoors. Outdoor participants also reported enjoying their workouts more and said they were more likely to repeat them than participants who were exercising indoors. Numerous Numerous pieces of research show a clear connection between spending time outdoors and a reduction in stress. Plus,

2. Outdoor fitness may be easier to stick with. Creating an exercise habit is difficult, but finding one you enjoy can make it easier to come back to. So that shot of pleasure you get from being outdoors may mean it's more likely you'll stick to your program. Canadian researchers found postmenopausal women reaped more benefits from outdoor workouts and were significantly more likely to adhere to their training program than those who did their exercising indoors. 3. Soak up the sunshine benefits. While unprotected overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, we shouldn't overlook the many benefits of sunlight. When the sun hits our skin, it creates vitamin D3, important to bone health and metabolic function. In addition, exposure to sunlight during the day can help you sleep better at night, improve immune function and increase endorphin production— those feel-good hormones circulating throughout your body. Exercising in the great outdoors in Axarquia is not limited to running and walking as you can enjoy spin (static cycling), circuit training and personal training sessions at Chili Leisure in Competa. The classes are all outdoors over looking the beautiful coastline and mountain ranges under the supervision and guidance of fully qualified staff. So now there are many ways to reap the benefits of exercising in the open air! Karen Parnell, Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach at Chili Leisure in Competa

I brought a bunch of flowers for my first date with a vegan. "That's really sweet," she said. "Well I didn't know what you vegans ate."

I saw some idiot at the gym put a bottle of water in the hole on the machine where the Pringles go.

I just found out that the guy who stole my diary has died. My thoughts are with his family.

The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all of the background checks, interviews, and tests were done there were three finalists — two men and one woman. For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow your instructions, no matter what the circumstances. Inside this room you will find your wife sitting in a chair. You have to kill her." The first man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife." The agent replies, "Then you're not the right man for this job.” The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All

was quiet for about five minutes. Then the agent came outwith tears in his eyes. "I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The agent replies, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home.” Finally, it was the woman's turn. Only she was told to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one shot after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman. She wiped the sweat from her brow and said, "You guys didn't tell me the gun was loaded with blanks. I had to beat him to death with the chair!"

Q: What should you do if you're attacked by a gang of clowns? A: Go for the juggler.

A 60-year-old man is getting his annual physical. "Doc, do you think I'll live another 40 years so I can reach 100?" he asks. "That depends," says the doctor. "Do you smoke?" “No." "Do you drink?" "No." "Do you fool around with loose women?" "Of course not." “Well, then," says the doctor. "Why the hell do you want to live for another 40 years?"

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

A

s a child I lived with my mother, sister and grandparents in a two down, one up, plus bathroom. We had no car, of course, but we treasured our motorbike and side-car. Sundays were for outings; my grandfather was the driver, my mother pillion, grandma in the front of the sidecar with me on her lap and my sister in the tiny back seat. We´d generally pack a picnic and head off into the countryside – we lived in Northumberland, England so there were plenty of wild spaces. One of my ongoing school projects then was a pressed wild flower album and it became somewhat a passion of mine (I told you I´ve always had flowers in the blood!). So every time we saw a wild flower in the verge that I might not have, we'd bang on the window and my grandfather would dutifully pull up. The album grew into a work of art and I

mourn the fact that I no longer have it – it would be a real treasure now. In those days – the 1950´s – it wasn´t 'wrong' to pick wild flowers; there were so many of them! And we would often return wearily and happily home with armfuls of bluebells picked from oceans of blue in Bluebell Wood. Nature then was truly prolific. But how often do we see that abundance now? I look back and think how wrong we all were to strip Nature of her bounty, how shameful. But we didn´t know - it´s always said, and it´s true; no-one thought we could ever lose all that flowery profusion. It has been calculated that 54% of evaluated plant species are now under threat and one in eight, globally, is at risk of extinction. One thing we do all now realise is that over one third of our food for the 7.2 billion people occupying earth comes from flowering plants - pollinated by bees. In England, it

is estimated that 97% of flowerrich grassland and meadows have disappeared since the 1930's. We all have beautiful visions of alpine meadows, full of wild flowers but, in actuality, even there, flower species have declined 60% in the last forty years – and that is in protected areas. So how can we atone, how can we restore the plenty? It could be said that it is impossible because there are so many things against – massive population increases, the demand for food, homes, roads, cities, pollution in all aspects but one idea I do like is to plant something that your grandmother grew. Wild flowers are, by definition, those that grow and are able to look after themselves in the wild, in a natural state. They are uncultivated, they grow, go to seed and start all over again. But garden plants from Grandma's era were not so very different to the wildflowers; they were simpler and

well-able to look after themselves because of that. Modern breeding programmes produced flowers with bigger blooms. Things like roses can, nowadays, have one hundred, or more, petals in a bloom and, yes, they are often very beautiful but pollinating insects cannot get through the mass to reach the pollen and nectar. Grandma's plants were rich with nectar and it was easily accessible because the flowers had few petals. Her garden, too, was full of diversity – she wanted flowers, fruit, herbs and veg for all seasons – no monocultures for her! And remember, it wasn´t purely a decorative garden – many of her plants were used for feeding, healing and cleaning; they were of value to us but also to wildlife. I remember the buzzing towering spikes of hollyhocks and foxgloves alive with bees, massed daisies, black-eyed Susans, and nodding heads of grandma´s bonnets! There was bachelor's

buttons, bee balm, bellflowers, bleeding hearts, lily of the valley, mock orange, pin cushions, ragged robins and snap dragons. On hot summer nights (yes, there were some then!) we were allowed to rig a tent with the wooden clothes horse and an old blanket and we slept under the intoxicating scent of the lilac tree. Many of these plants are now called heirloom plants and they are becoming rare and special. They have history, they have stories to tell to each and every one of us, they are our heritage and our future. Let´s fill our gardens again with these magical memories, these old friends and give our children and grandchildren something to remember too. We have many of these plants in the Garden Centre, so come and make your very own Grandma's Garden. Viveros Florena – Probably the best little garden centre in Andalucía!

MALAGA HOLI RUN It was a Valentine's Day like no other for the around 12,000 runners who took part in the Holi Run close to Malaga's Palacio de Deportes Last month. There were not many who were interested in setting personal best in the five-kilometre course which is a take on the Hindu spring festival. The main objective was to cross the finishing line in a covering of as many different coloured powders as possible. At the end, the party really got started as people enjoyed music played by DJ Ben Hassel and the dance show put on by Daenerys. GOOD NEWS FOR THE PROPERTY INDUSTRY Figures published last month by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE) confirm that the proporty market recovery is well under way and that sales activity are at levels near those at the start of the crisis. In the Malaga are last year, 24,705 properties were sold, the highest figure since 2008. 2015 saw an increase of 11 per cent in sales and was the third consecutive year of growth. The Malaga property market has been growing since 2013 while national and regional recuperation did not start until 2014. The rise of 11 per cent for last year in Malaga does, however, mark a slight slow down in recovery when compared to the 14 per cent

growth in 2014. But experts point out that this is because high increases are easier when initial figures are very low. The number of sales last year brings Malaga to the top of the Andalusian tables. The province accounted for almost 35 per cent of all properties sold in the region and more than twice as many as those sold in Seville (11,536). However, pre-crisis levels such as those seen in 2007 when 42,000 properties changed hands in Malaga are a long way off.

NEW THEME PARK PLANNED A British company wants to invest 650 million € in a theme park in Torremolinos. The Town Hall would collect an initial 20 million and an annual income of three million and it would bring 4,000 direct jobs to the town. It needs the town PGOU (Urban Ordination General Plan) to be unblocked for the first time in twenty years. This will be decided in a meeting planned in the Torremolinos Town Hall. They will decide whether to send the British bid to the Junta de Andalucía, who will have the final say. The commercial and leisure centre would be the largest in Andalucía which Intu Properties wants to build between the Congress Palace and the motorway.
