Last month I took my kids on the Competa Hikes free children’s walk. This was the second time I had attended one of their walks and it was another fantastic day out. We were first driven to the lost village of El Acebuchal and then we walked an 8km circuit around the village with an official guide. The idea is for the children to learn about the countryside, flora and fauna in the area whilst having fun at the same time. A scrumptious breakfast of melon and oranges was provided mid walk along with some chocolate to keep us going! At the end of the walk we returned to Finca los Pinos where a quiz was given to the children and prizes were to be had for those that answered the questions correctly. Then to round the day off a tasty paella was served followed by desert. All the children had a fabulous day and asked when the next walk will be held. Look out for the next date in The Grapevine Magazine and book your space fast as there is limited places available. it is open to anyone, living anywhere see page 27 for photos of the day. Next month, April we have our quarterly Property Feature this falls in the same month as Easter an excellent month for visitors coming to the area some in search of a property some that fall in love with the place. So if you have a private property to sell or you are an Estate Agent that would like to advertise, please get in contact and see what deals we have on offer. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor .

quantity and that cava is now seen more as a cheap supermarket staple than as a premium product that can comfortably go cork-to-cork with champagne. With that in mind, the Cava Regulatory Council decided to establish a new category – cava de paraje calificado, or single-vineyard cava – to showcase the very best the wine has to offer. The classification is still awaiting final sign-off from Spain’s agriculture ministry, but the first bottles are expected to appear on the shelves soon, priced somewhere between €40 (£34) and €100. To qualify for the category, cava must conform to a series of requirements, such as being made on the estate, coming from vines that are at least 10 years old and spending at least three years ageing in the bottle.

OW-COST airline easyJet is now operating three flights a week between London Gatwick and Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén airport in southern Spain. It is anticipated the route will bring in 20,000 British tourists in 2017. The two hours and 50 minutes flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout 2017. new restaurant in Tenerife is inviting diners to strip off and enjoy an 'aphrodisiac buffet' in a candlelit atmosphere. Innato opened its doors to the public last week and claims to be the first nude restaurant in Spain. The staff also strip off to showcase the culinary treats on their bodies.Innato is said to be inspired by The Bunyadi, the nude pop-up eatery that hit London last summer year.

Accused of serious civil disobedience over Catalonia's unofficial 2014 independence vote, Mr Mas said he took full responsibility for the "political initiative". The vote went ahead despite an order from Spain's constitutional court. Prosecutors are calling for him to be disqualified from office for 10 years. Mr Mas, his deputy Joana Ortega, and Catalan former education minister Irene Rigau face accusations ranging from disobedience and perverting the course of justice to misuse of public funds.

The wine, which is made in the same way as champagne, has proved a huge success for Spain over recent decades, with producers churning out almost 250m bottles a year, more than half of which are exported to 130 countries. pain’s Socialist Party (PSOE) wants the body of right-wing dictator Francisco Franco to be moved from its current grave at the Valley of the Fallen, a controversial monument around 50 kilometers northwest of Madrid. The main opposition party has introduced a non-binding resolution in Congress that also requests the creation of a truth commission to investigate the Franco years (1939-1975).The initiative seeks to push ahead the development of the Historical Memory Law passed in 2007 by the previous Socialist administration of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in an effort to provide moral redress to the victims of both the Civil War (1936-1939) and the ensuing dictatorship. The Socialist motion, which will be debated and voted on in the coming months, has political rather than executive force. It chides the conservative Popular Party (PP) government for effectively deactivating the Historical Memory Law through under funding and political footdragging.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Our Year So Far Has Started With An Inundation of Puppies.
A
t the beginning of January I received a phone call informing me that two pups had been discovered abandoned in a box by the rubbish bins in Sayalonga. It was a very cold and windy evening, and if that call hadn't been made when it was, those pups wouldn't have lasted the night in such freezing conditions. Fortunately, Julia Ruane came to the rescue and carried the two shivering pups to safety. They were subsequently taken to the vet, where they were wormed and given flea treatment. Both pups are doing well and we hope to find homes for them. Later in January, a couple came into our charity shop asking for help regarding a mother and her six puppies. The couple owned a house next door to a local farmer and visited their property regularly throughout the year. On a number of occasions, they noticed that the farmer's dog had given birth to pups. A cause for concern was that on subsequent visits there was never any sign of these pups. On their most recent visit the farmer's dog had once again recently given birth, this time

to six pups. The couple were prepared to take the young dogs into their home and foster them until such a time as they could be rehomed. They were also willing to try to persuade the farmer to have his dog spayed. We agreed to cover all costs of food, treatments and vaccinations for the puppies, as well as the spaying of the mother. These pups are still available for adoption.
food, for which they were desperate. I have no idea how long they'd been in the sack, but it was tied so tightly that they had obviously been left to suffocate. All five survived. They are currently being fostered by Anna, while we try to find new homes for them.
And finally, the story of an amazing rescue by Simon Shaw. Simon had been driving down a quiet road in Archez when he saw a discarded sack on the side of the road. He noticed the sack was moving and at first thought this was due to the wind, but on stopping his vehicle and taking a closer look he realised the sack contained something that was definitely alive. The sack was tied tightly, but he managed to pull the top apart very slightly and peered inside. Tiny eyes looked back at him. At that point he picked the sack up and brought it to the Action for Animals shop.
Action for Animals offers low cost or free neutering, so there's no need for any of these incidents to have happened. Please spread the word to anyone you might know who has an unneutered female dog. Help us to stop the suffering.
Once the sack arrived at our shop, we wasted no time in carefully cutting the sack open to reveal five beautiful pups. They were very hot and we gently lifted them out and put them into a comfortable cage where they were given access to water and
If you're interested in adopting any of the pups mentioned in this article, please contact us.

him change is mind! Gilly is not new to front of house work or to Competa. She has lived in the area for years. Over this time she has built up knowledge of what people want from a bar and dining experience. She did also add in jest that she has had plenty of experience on the other side of the bar too! That is Gilly though; she's funny, makes me laugh and always has something to say. When she walked into the bar to meet me for this interview the atmosphere changed she had immediately engaged with customers, chatted easily and was laughing while she set straight to work.
BISTRO 6 An Interview with Gilly and Gary
B
istro 6, just down from Plaza Vendimia, Competa has been newly taken over by Gilly and Gary who are both well known in the village. Gary is an extremely talented chef and Gilly is a likeable, personable and an efficient front of house. They really do make a perfect combination to run a business. Gary is not new to running his own business as he has run his own restaurants and bars on and off throughout his career. Gary graduated from Chef School at Southport University 40 years ago where he trained under the Roux Brothers heading. He explained he was trained in French which was usual in those days to gain chefs qualification. After graduating, Gary went on to work in London for 25 years. He opened Coconut Grove both in London and Marbella. Also, for 7 years Gary ran his own Bar and Brassiere in Brixton. Then friends asked him to chef at their

restaurant El Parador in London, a Spanish tapas restaurant with famous clientele such as Ken Livingston and Bjork. In 2001, Gary moved to Spain to open a bar/restaurant in Canillas de Albaida. However, soon after an opportunity presented itself by a friend in America who wanted him to go out there and help set up a new restaurant in New York. This time he would work both with his friend and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) who was their investor and business partner. Unfortunately for Gary he was unable to obtain a green card after a year and so he returned to Spain to continue to chef in places such as The MudejarArchez, La Plaza - Canillas and Oscars Taverna - Competa. He is a respected and a known chef in the area but he also said he would never open his own business again! However it seemed the influence of his girl friend Gilly and the newly available perfectly sized location for them to work together made
The Bistro 6 premises have had a make-over as Gilly and Gary have painted, made lighting and soft furnishing changes and created a definitive bar area separate to the dinning space. On the newly painted walls there is a black board for delicious sounding specials and behind the bar further blackboards to display their wine and beer list. It has a warm and cosy feel good for intimate dinning or an evening with a few friends. A few days later after the interview friends suggested trying out Bistro 6 so 6 of us booked a table and went. The place was warm, packed and buzzing, Gilly even had to turn people away or ask them to sit at the bar. Despite how busy they were Gilly was attentive to all customers, our table always had drinks and food came out together in a timely manner. We all agreed the food was fabulous, tasty and well presented. Gary came out at the end of the meal and asked if the food was OK and Gilly was a dynamic host until we left. We all thoroughly enjoyed the dinning experience and we will definitely be returning soon.

A FEW THINGS ABOUT HEALTHINESS The Triad of Health
T
here are many different factors that go into creating a healthy individual and these factors play a major role in who we are as individuals. When it comes to making the most of our lives we need to look at health as if it were a triad, comprised of three primary facets of our being. Working together with balance and in harmony these three components together produce the best overall health in any individual. PHYSICAL HEALTH This is the one that we most frequently look toward because we are beings that are very physical in nature. When we look at the physical body we can very simply measure things to figure out if we are okay physically. We use things like blood tests, urinalysis, and even blood pressure and measure them with devices to come up with quantitative health. Of course, physical health also
22 The Grapevine
includes many other facets like sleep, good dietary habits, and exercise just to name a few. Physical health is for many individuals the only aspect of their health that they see. EMOTIONALITY Whereas physicality is on the top of the list when it comes to health it is key to understand that emotionality can have an effect on all bodily functions also. Having a sound mind that can be just more important if not more than when you having a healthy physical condition. Many of us, particularly in today's age, find ourselves unhappy and in need of medicine to keep them on a straight path. Other people struggle with behavioural disorders and temper disorders too. These things are vital to manage with therapy and medicine since they add to your overall well being. SPIRITUALITY Some of us regard spiritual well being as most important and
others regard social well being but giving yourself with things that make you content is a huge part of your general healthiness. Making time whether you pray and meditate or spend time at a party having fun you need time to keep yourself tranquil and feeling fine. A constructive experience is very significant to who we are as healthy people. Health is a multi-faceted thing and the many points of the triad of health should not be overlooked. When looking at your health and wanting to improve it make sure that you consider improving all the aspects of your existence to obtain the highest level of health possible for yourself at this point of your life. You may not be able to be completely healthy but by addressing all these different areas you will be off to an excellent start. Patrick Daniels

a minimum of SPF 15, it is a must and don’t stop applying it. They are not just for the summer time, the winter sun is damaging as well! Avoid having baths with hot water and stop the super hot baths. The hot water breaks the lipid barriers in the skin which leads to the further loss of moisture from the skin. Instead of hot water baths use lukewarm baths.
BEAUTY TIPS IN WINTER
W
inter is indeed a beautiful season with all the sweat and botheration away making it a beautiful season, it is surely the time to get out and have fun outdoors. It is the time to bid farewell to all the running spoiled make up due to sweat and oil. It brings out the beautiful faces with the beautiful weather! Dark colours, contrasts, sans the irritating heat and humidity the perfect ingredients to bring out and keep up the beauty. But the oh-sobeautiful winters are handled not so prettily by the skin and though it is the season for all the beauties but it needs the care to keep it going! Winter air is deficient with moisture and the lack of humidity is nothing but the lack of moisture which makes it dry. And the increasing cold decreases the moisture level, and when this dry chilling wind blows it takes away the moisture of the hydrated skin as well. This is why dry, flaky skin is the highlight of the season. In a dry environment, water is lost from the keratinocytes – or skin cells

– leaving skin feeling sore and chapped, it dries the natural oils. Winter, therefore, becomes the season of skin problems, so, here are 10 beauty tips to arm the skin for the battle against winters! Although you can’t help your skin losing the moisture you can keep it hydrated still and protect it from the harshness, therefore, moisturize your skin well. Apply moisturizer and reapply it to keep the skin hydrated. Give your body a good moisture bath after the shower and before going to bed daily and help it recover. Apply lip balm before stepping out and reapply it again to prevent the chapped lips. Apply coconut oil or virgin olive oil every night before hitting the bed. Both the oils are high in hydrating and skin repairing qualities and would keep the flaky skin healthy. It will repair the skin and leave it plump and you will wake up with glowing hydrated skin. Even though it’s winter season don’t forget the sun screen with
Water intake reduces in winter and this becomes a barrier in the hydration of skin resulting in dry skin. Therefore, the primary beauty tip in winter is to increase the intake of water. Honey is not only beneficial to include in the diet in winters but also for the beauty regime! Just add honey to it! Apply a honey and lemon or only honey as a face pack or on other dry body parts and see the magic. Honey is a natural moisturizer and not only does it moisturizes but adds a glow. Curd away the dryness! Applying curd pack or massaging the face and hands with curd would replenish the moisture level but will also sweep away all the dirt and leave it fresh, supple, and hydrated. Don’t forget to exfoliate the dead skin away, a light exfoliation though. It will stop the piling up of the dead skin cells and brighten the skin. Layer up! As much as possible keep your hands and feet covered to avoid the chilling winds which rob the skin of its moisture. And don’t forget to apply a good moisturizer or oil before layering up. This will leave the skin supple and protected! Samaira khatri

taste. They are primarily served as aperitifs before the meal and with tapas as a starter. However, many Spanish people drink these as a wine throughout the meal. They are very versatile wines which go perfectly with jamón, chorizo, mild cheeses, white fish and all seafood. Next up comes the medium-dry Amontillado. This is a golden amber colour with a dry but nutty taste. It goes well with poultry and game, robust cheeses and oily fish like sardines and mackerel.
version of the word ‘Jerez’ (which is pronounced ‘hereth’ with the accent on the second 'e'). To be considered a genuine ‘sherry’ a wine must come from the ‘sherry triangle’. This is a region on the Atlantic coast of Anadalucia bordered by the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. So, no matter what it says on the bottle, anything else is just fortified wine in the style of Jerez.
A darker, richer sherry but still a medium is the Oloroso. This is perfect for red meats and stronger game dishes. Finally comes the dessert sherries : Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez. These are both very sweet and are perfect for desserts and blue cheeses. The Moscatel is a softer wine and the Ximénez is a rich, dark Spanish beauty in a glass!A couple of options for you to try are a Palo Cortado and a Pale Cream. The Palo Cortado is a rare wine which is a sort of cross between an Amontillado and an Oloroso. Drink it with the richer foods like game, strong cheeses, etc. You’ll probably find the Pale Cream more easily available. This is basically a fino that has been sweetened. It’s an interesting flavour and goes well with rich patés like foie gras, or try it with fresh fruit and nuts.
There are three main types of widely-available sherry: dry, medium and sweet, plus a couple that are a bit different and harder to find. We’ll cover the main ones first.
A commonly-found sherry is the Cream. This is a dessert wine in the style of the Ximénez but not so rich - or expensive! Try it with sweets, pastries and blue cheeses.

he Spanish have been enjoying sherry with their tapas for thousands of years. If you like your tapas and want to complement it in the traditional way a little understanding of what’s available and what goes with what will make your tapas experience even more enjoyable. You won't find a better combination. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wine, or beer, or anything else that takes your fancy to have with your tapas. But until you try it with sherry, you’re missing out on a taste tradition going back thousands of years. The first documented mention of sherry comes from around 1 BC - and that author mentioned original vines brought by the Pheonicians in 1100 BC! First things first though: the Spanish do not call their wine ‘sherry’. This is an anglicised

wine, and have a taper towards the top to funnel those subtle and distinctive notes nicely to the nose. Don’t fill the glass more than halfway or the wine will not have a chance to blossom and release its aromas as you swirl it around the glass. If you can’t lay your hands on some proper copitas then a champagne flute would be the next-best alternative. Failing that, just slosh some into a wine glass, you heathen! But better to drink from a wine glass than not to drink at all, that’s what I say. Temperatue Fino and Manzanilla should be bought fresh and used quickly, within three months, as they do not last well in the bottle. They should always be served chilled. Once opened, keep in the refrigerator and consume within a couple of weeks. These wines are very delicately flavoured and

delicious alternative.
Amontillados can be kept in the bottle for two to three years but, again, once opened, should be consumed as quickly as possible. The ideal temperature to drink these is a cool room temperature. However, once they’ve been opened you should keep them in the fridge if you don’t have a cool place to keep them. Drinking them cold is perfectly acceptable.
Storage Unopened bottles of sherry are very susceptible to oxidisation so should be stored upright, not laid down, in a cool and dark place at an even temperature. All sherries, once opened, should be stored upright with their corks firmly in place to prevent oxidisation and loss of flavour.
The Olorosos, Creams and Ximénezes, being richer and more aged, can be kept in the bottle for years, depending on the quality of the wine. Once opened, they can be kept for months in a cool place, or in the fridge. But bear in mind that they should be served at room temperature to appreciate them at their best. A pale cream, or even a cream, ‘on the rocks’ is a
There is, of course, a very simple answer to this problem of storage and oxidisation. You simply prepare some tapas ‘little dishes’, get a few friends round and open your best bottle of sherry. Then throw the cork away! What better way to enjoy your sherry and tapas the proper Spanish way? Stephen Lean

HOW WRITING MIGHT JUST TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE Writing Axarquia
W
e probably communicate through written language every day, but when is the last time you put pen to paper and really wrote something? And no, I'm not talking about emails or correspondence or tweets or facebook posts or the weekly shopping or to do list. Okay, some people keep a regular journal, but if it's been a while since you got creative on the page, it might be time to kickstart your practice because writing and creativity have been linked to a number of benefits for both body and mind. Write It Don't Type It If you're always glued to your

computer screen or smartphone, then take some time out and step away from the keyboard, because although typing has become our main way of putting our thoughts down in print, using a pen or pencil has a number of welldocumented benefits. Writing by hand has been linked to improved creativity, critical thinking and problem solving and handwriting improves fine motor skills and cognitive abilities. Although typing may seem quicker, handwriting gives us time to pause, reflect and consider our choice of words, and because of the mental effort involved, studies show that writing by hand also helps to imprint memories and improve
learning better than typing. Writing by hand is also a sensual, pleasurable activity. Choose a favourite pen, write in coloured ink in a beautiful hardback notebook and enjoy every minute. Best of all, pens, pencils and notebooks last a long time without batteries and can go anywhere with you. Tip: keep a notebook and pen by your bed and spend 5 minutes writing down the first things that come into your head on waking. Don't self-censor, just let it flow. Try it for a week and see how it feels. The Yoga of Writing We can probably accept that

writing down your thoughts or feelings after a traumatic incident can contribute to your emotional recovery, but would you have thought that writing might also help physical wounds to heal faster too? A study in New Zealand in 2013 asked one group to keep a journal about their innermost thoughts and feelings. The other group was asked to write about anything except their feelings. After a time lag of two weeks they all had skin biopsies taken leaving a small wound on the arm and photographs over the next 21 days recorded their healing. After just 11 days, 76 percent of the group that did expressive writing had fully healed as compared with 42 percent of the control group. “We think writing about distressing events helped participants make sense of the events and reduce distress,” says Elizabeth Broadbent, professor of medicine at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Long-term anxiety or emotional distress can increase the level of the body's stress hormone Cortisol, impeding the proper functioning of the immune system. Finding ways to express your feelings can reduce Cortisol and contribute to both mental and physical wellbeing. Writing is also a fantastic way to help to counter the daily onslaught of negative messages we're faced with more than at any time in human history. From social media to TV to print magazines and newspapers, we're bombarded with an unhelpful mixture of idealized body images, celebrity gossip and bad news. Any wonder then that we're often left feeling miserable, powerless and inadequate? Writing can be a great way to help us regain

emotional equilibrium, to reflect upon what we are grateful for rather than moan about what we're unhappy about.
for you body, writing might just hold the same status as one of the best all-round workouts for your mind.
Tip: in that notebook you keep by your bed, begin the day by listing something you're grateful for in your life, something you appreciate about a significant other, something you'd like more of in life and something you'd like to be better at. If you're someone who wakes up feeling anxious, this can be a great way to get you focusing on the positive. Think of it like a short daily yoga or relaxation practice. Try it for a week and see how it feels.
Tip: using your bedside notebook, write non-stop for 5 minutes starting with the sentence: My adventure began… Then write non-stop for 5 minutes starting with My adventure continued… Finally, write non-stop for 5 minutes starting with the sentence: My adventure ended… Don't selfcensor, over-think or stop and read what you've written – just keep going. Try this every day for a week. When you get to the end of the week, read what you've written. You may be surprised by the directions your imagination and creativity have led you. Are there any ideas you might develop into something longer?
An Active Mind If you want to keep your mind alert and your imagination active, creative writing is a great workout for the grey cells. You just have to consider the different areas of the brain that are involved when you're penning a story, poem or an episode from your own life. As well as activating the language and motor centres of the brain, you'll also be delving into you own memories, regardless of the form your writing is taking. Some of these will be sensory memories, as you try to recall, for example, the scent of tarmac after rain, or the sound of the band that played the night of that memorable date, or the colour of the sky when it was heavy with snow that winter. Maybe you'll recall faces, snippets of conversation and locations. Next, you'll be consulting your inner dictionary and thesaurus, trying to find just the right words to get that memory across. Imagine the work your brain is doing if you're penning a short story, writing a family history or even tackling a novel. Just as walking is said to be one of the best all-round exercises
So, whether you're keeping a journal, writing for pleasure or thinking about becoming a serious wordsmith, a few simple daily exercises will not only ignite your creativity and awaken your imagination, they might also have a really positive effect on your mental, emotional and physical well being. increase your dosage to attain the same affect. Using prescription or over-thecounter sleep aids to catch up on your sleep is generally ok, but should be avoided. You should consult your doctor before taking sleep medication and never increase your dosage, without professional medical advice. You should also avoid taking them for more than 2 or 3 nights in a row, as prolonged use can cause ‘rebound’ insomnia, which may be more difficult to treat. Insomnia can be difficult to treat especially when the sufferer has relied upon sleeping pills over a long period. This is because natural sleep is not attained and the sufferer is no longer relying on his or her own ability to sleep. It’s easy to fall into the trap of taking sleeping pills, as most of us think that if we deal with the symptoms, the problem will go away.
HOW TO FALL ASLEEP Wondering How to Fall Asleep During Those Sleepless Nights?
I
f you suffer from insomnia, then you have probably been wondering how to fall asleep during those sleepless nights. More often than not, insomnia sufferers complain of not being able to relax enough to sleep. Those racing, relentless thoughts that plague the mind at night seem never ending. Although it is not uncommon for most adults to suffer from a sleepless night, for the insomnia sufferer it is a reoccurring problem. Unfortunately, 40 percent of insomnia sufferers rely on over the counter sleep aids or prescribed sleeping pills to combat sleeplessness. The question is, are they effective?
And what are the long term effects of taking sleeping pills? Taking sleeping pills over a long period will break down your body’s natural sleep cycle and make natural sleep very difficult. Most sleeping pills on the market will disrupt normal brain wave patterns. This can affect the quality and quantity of sleep attained. It’s common to feel groggy, drowsy or tired in the morning. Sleep may feel un-refreshing and you may experience side effects such as, blurred vision, dizziness and palpitations. Sleeping pills may help you get to sleep but with continual use your body will build tolerance, and you may feel tempted to
There are far more effective ways to deal with insomnia which do not require medication. You see, insomnia is a learned habit. In this day an age, stress, worry and anxiety are increasingly common problems. Financial problems, relationships and work are common factors. We often ignore our body’s signal that we are under too much stress. But by doing this it can have detrimental effects on our emotional behaviour. Stress is one of the major causes of insomnia. We get up, rush to work, spend the day rushing around trying to stay on top of work, go pick up the kids, go to the supermarket, rush home, slave away on the stove, do the dishes, put the kids to sleep and collapse on the couch completely burnt out. At this point we switch on the TV, eyes glazed with a million thoughts of the day and the next, whizzing

around our heads. We go to bed carrying these thoughts which seem to trigger a domino effect of thoughts, inevitably keeping us awake. It may be worry or anxiety, but more often they’re just random thoughts spiraling out of control. Everyone has the ability to sleep and it’s the subconscious part of the mind that knows how to fall asleep. Through bad sleep habits, negative sleep thoughts and stress you’ve reconditioned the mind and your conscious mind becomes too dominant at night. Inevitably you will find that it’s even more difficult to let the subconscious mind to take over and do its job. By taking sleeping pills you are only reinforcing this, because you are no longer relying on your natural ability to sleep. But don’t worry, just like learning to ride a bike or drive a car, the
subconscious mind is able to learn how to sleep. More accurately you reawaken and reinforce your own natural ability to sleep. How do we do this? Well first off we need to tackle the cause and improve our sleep habits. You need to take a step back, maybe even write down a list of causes and work to eliminate them. There are far more advanced techniques and therapies such as hypnosis, EFT, NLP and acupuncture which are completely drug free and work to remove the underlying cause. For now these are some basic tips you can start applying to begin the process of establishing a good sleep routine: Establish a consistent sleep schedule and stick to it.
before you sleep. Unwind with some soothing music or some chamomile tea. Leave your stresses of the day behind. Maximize your exposure to sunlight in the day. Make sure that your bed is comfortable and supportive. Make sure your bedroom is dark and cool. Release your stresses and worries by talking about your problems. Remember that bedtime is for sleep and restoration and not a time for worry or thoughts. Philip Tsang

THE HISTORICAL RICHNESS OF GRANADA Brian Conte Gives his Insight to Granada
T
here is so much history to Granada's glory, causing it to be unstable through the ages and through the reigns of many conquerors before it was established as a sovereign kingdom by Ibn Ahmar, an Arabian prince of the Nasrid tribe, in 1238. He was really a fair and able ruler, but did not have the opportunity to reign longer with the whole of Spain coming under the Christian Re-conquest. Granada’s Rich History Although the Moors were first at Granada, they were encumbered with battles throughout the ages until they succumbed to King Fernando III in the 13th century. With the death of Moorish leader, Ibn Ahmar, in 1275, the Moors remain as Spain’s only Muslim kingdom living till today. However, its incoming refugee numbers fuelled its growth in various industries, such as culture and commerce, which are flourishing today.
50 The Grapevine
Thus, the Christian and Muslim kingdoms have moulded Granada’s historical glory for more than two centuries up until today. The famous Alhambra palace was the brainchild of these Muslim sultans that brought fame to this area, until the city was entangled in an internal battle fuelled by two of the sultan’s favourite wives. By then the Christian Re-conquest, which had been going strong, took full reign in 1479 to set up the united Christian kingdoms of Spain between Castile and Aragón when Fernando and Isabel married one another. The rest is history, as they say, when through the royal reign, Ronda, Málaga and Almería were finally conquered, thus fulfilling the Christian Re-Conquest goal. The Gitanos of Granada As with many of the Andalusian cities, Granada is still home to an old and traditional gypsy population, known as the Gitanos. There is quite a large number of this tribe today in Granada; the clans from which Spain’s best flamenco dancers, guitarists and singers emerged.
These clans tend to occupy the caves which their forefathers used to inhabit, but now specifically at Sacromonte Hill, giving tourists a dose of zambras. Gastronomical Options It may not offer the best of Spanish cuisines due to the free tapas offered by some tapas bars, but Granada still can offer some North African flavour at its ‘Little Morocco’ where there are plenty of health foods and Moroccan tearooms with a delectable menu. This unique street can serve as the gathering point for picnics on one of the Alhambra visits. There are restaurants that are easy on the pocket serving economical meals everywhere in Granada. You can check out Campo del Principe, a nice square with a restaurant that has open air terraces at the south of Alhambra Hill; it is very popular at night during summer. Brian Conte

your kitchen shelves. We Brits have drunk many a ‘cup of char’ since the appearance of Tea back in the day. But long gone are those days of brewing your Tetley’s or your PG Tips! Tea culture has moved on from a beloved cup of Yorkshire and a fondant fancy…to a new era of health-conscious folk wanting a new lease of life from their leaves.
TEA DRINKING CULTURE Trendy Tea of the 21st Century.
E
veryone loves a good cuppa! A hot cup of Tea puts the world to rights; puts a smile on your face and warms your soul after a hard days slog. A hot cup of Tea washes away sorrows and puts a spring in your step with each loving sip. A hot cup of Tea is a comfort blanket, a medicinal treasure and something our British culture would not be the same without. Tea drinking dates back as far as 10th century BC where it was historically recorded first originating as a Chinese custom to sip on the brewed leaves. It supposedly broke loose from its Chinese roots and began to influence adjoining Asian regions such as Japan and Korea who abruptly latched on to the Tea growing, Tea brewing, and Teadrinking phenomenon. Sometime during the 16th century Tea made its way into the English economy, thanks to

King Charles II alliance with Portugal through his marital ties. The Portuguese maintained wellestablished trading channels with China through which Tea soon became an accessible commodity that us Brits did not want to do without. In western civilization Tea first drew breath as a lavish elixir. To sip on this ‘liquid gold’ was a true honour and one only presented to those of privileged parties. It was drank both medicinally and recreationally, often finding itself poured at special occasions and celebrations (usually drank from expensive china with a pert pinky on show!) Subsequently through India’s flourishing Tea trade and a huge drop in price, by the 19th century Tea became a working-class refreshment and commonly drunk in all households. It no longer held such the regal status that it once claimed ownership to however flourished as a popular pick to have readily available on
With the Health Benefits Of Tea becoming widely known, Tea Brands are introducing the likes of, Oolong, Puerh & Matcha Green Tea to their portfolio’s, parading the headlines as the new brew in town. Promising to eradicate harmful toxins, aid digestion, weight loss plus much more, these ‘Trendy Teas’ appear to be the way forward in giving us a clean bill of health while enjoying a soulful sip on these invigorating infusions. Many Tea Brands are all brewing up a storm with their cheeky concoctions, such as Chocolate Tea, Chilli Chai and Crème Caramel! And if that’s not enough I have heard popcorn Tea (see photo) is making its way onto centre stage! A cinematic revolution in Tea culture perhaps? There’s a whole host of holistic Teas that offer up a wealth of diversity and deliciousness helping to cure an array of ailments from A-Z. Tea drinking certainly has risen to refinement once more with the introduction of these modern twists on ancient blends, revamping Tea as the Trendy Tea of the 21st century. Neen Marshall

RIOJA WINES A Quick Explanation!
T
he Rioja region in Northern Spain is situated in the Rio Ebro valley, it's northern border being bounded by the Sierra de Cantabrias mountain range and it's southern by the Sierra de la Demanda. The resulting geographical location creates conditions that have produced a perfect environment for vineyards. The Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja covers some 57,000 hectares located in 3 Autonomous Communities those of La Rioja, The Basque countryand Navarra. Between them they produce around 250 million litres of Rioja wine per annum Of which 85% is red and

the rest whites or rosés. Wine has been produced in this area for centuries, initially by monks inthe middle ages but as far back as 1635 the Mayor 0f Logroño decreed hat no carriages were to pass along the roads next to the cellars for fear that the vibration from them might affect the juice and the ageing of the precious Rioja wines. In 1102 we find the first document making reference to the safe guarding of the quality of Rioja wines when King Sancho of Navarra legally recognized the wines from this area. Then in 1787 the Real Sociedad Económica de
Cosecheros de Rioja (Royal Economic Society of Rioja Winegrowers) was established with the sole purpose of encouraging the cultivation of vines, wine production and its commercial development. In 1902 came a Royal Decree which defined the "origin" applicable toRioja Wines and then in 1926 came the Consejo Regulador (Control Board) with responsibility to define the designated boundaries of the Rioja region, supervise and issue the "seal of approval", and to recommend the legal action to be taken against mis-use of the name Rioja. In 1945 the board received it's legal structure and then in 1953 finally became

officially established from which time it has set out the foundations for a modern and efficient production of these world famous Spanish wines. In1970 this responsibility was clearly defined thus, “The Control Board shall uphold the Designation of Origin and implement, monitor and foster the quality of its wines. ”The long history of the production and development of Rioja wines has resulted in a wine of outstanding quality which can confidently stand shoulder to shoulder with many of the worlds finest wines. This was further acknowledged when on April 3rd. 1991 a Ministerial Order granted the category of “Calificada” to the D. O., the first and only wine designation of origin in Spain to attain this ranking. Rioja Wines, Grape Varieties. For many centuries wine has been produced in the Riojan area and obviously this lengthy passage of time has resulted in the natural selection of grapes best suited to the area and best able to produce wines of the highest quality. Factors such as soil type and climate play a large part in this selection process but of course the resultant wine is an all important consideration as well. Today seven varieties of grape are permitted by the Regulations of the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja, these are: -Red grape; Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano and White Grape; Viura, Malvasía and White Garnacha.

Types of Rioja Wines. Most Rioja wines are normally the result of the harmonious combination, in varying proportions, of the different varieties grown in the region and the different sub-areas within them. Rioja wines exhibit much aromatic complexity. They are fresh, with a medium body, a balanced structure, and an excellent bouquet. Red wines Classic wines of bright colour with a fresh, penetrating aroma; light in the mouth with medium alcohol content. Tempranillo is the predominant variety used to make these wines. Rosé wines: Bright pink wines with a strong fragrance. They are light and fresh in the mouth, with medium alcohol content. Garnacha is the predominant variety used to make these wines. White Wines Greenish-yellow, which can be more or less pale. They exhibit fine aromas and prove light in the mouth with fairly low alcohol content. Viura is the predominant variety used to make these wines. Ageing Rioja Wines. Rioja wines are aged in 225-litre oak casks, with periodic rackings, followed by a further period of bottle ageing. There are over 270 ageing bodegas in Rioja which have a total of over 900,000 casks. The different Rioja wine categories are based on minimum ageing periods, which can vary between 1 and 3 years in casks and between 6 months and 6 years in the bottle, depending on whether the wine is to be a Crianza, a Reserva or a Gran Reserva. Rioja wines are aged in oak casks of 225 litre capacity with periodic rackings. Then follows a period of bottle
ageing. The length of the ageing process differs between different categories of Riojan wine and can vary from1-3 years in the cask and 6 months to 6 years in the bottle depending on whether the wine is to be a Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva. Today there are over 270 ageing bodegas in Rioja with over 900,000 casks. The lengthy tradition of winemaking in the Rioja region of Northern Spainwith the inherent wealth of experience that such a period of trial, error, disaster, success and experimentation produces has resulted in blessing the world with a marvellous wine which will satisfy the most discerning palette. The Health Benefits of Red Wine. A further excellent fact about Rioja, and most dark red wines, is that scientific evidence now tells us that they are positively good for us. Drunk in moderation they provide us with those all important anti-oxidants. One of which in particular, called reservatrol, has been shown to have anti-cancer properties as well as to have an anti-blood clotting effect. Further proof perhaps of the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. So now when you take a drink of red wine and say, " your health you can really mean it. CHEERS! Ruth Polak

CRISP SHRIMP FRITTERS An Andalucian Recipe

hey are at their best when made with chickpea flour, but regular flour is just OK. For the best results, fry only a few fritters at a time so that the oil temperature doesn't drop, as a constant high temperature keeps the tortillitas from absorbing excess oil. NGREDIENTS 1/2 pound small shrimp, peeled 1 1/2 cups chickpea flour or regular flour 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat leaf parsley 3 scallions, white part and a little of the tender green tops, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon sweet pimenton Salt Extra Virgin Spanish Olive Oil for deep-frying PREPARATION In a saucepan, combine the shrimp with water to cover and bring to a boil over high heat. As soon as the water starts to boil,

quickly lift out the shrimp with a slotted spoon and set aside. Scoop out 1 cup of the cooking water and let cool. Discard the remaining water. When the shrimp are cool, cover and refrigerate until needed. To make the batter, combine the flour, parsley, scallions and pimentĂłn in a bowl or a food processor. Add a pinch of salt and the cooled cooking water. Mix or process well until you obtain a texture slightly thicker than a pancake batter. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Remove the shrimp from the refrigerator and mince finely. The pieces should be the size of coffee grounds. Remove the batter from the refrigerator, add the shrimp, and mix well. Pour the olive oil to a depth of about 1 inch into a heavy sautĂŠ pan and heat over high heat until it is almost smoking. Add 1 tablespoon of the batter to the oil
for each fritter and, using the back of the spoon, immediately flatten the batter into a round 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Do not crowd the pan. Fry, turning once, for about 1 minute on each side, or until the fritters are golden and very crisp with what Spanish cooks call puntillas, or lacelike formations, on the borders. Using a slotted spoon, lift out the fritters, holding them briefly over the pan to allow the excess oil to drain, and transfer to an ovenproof platter lined with paper towels to drain further. Keep the fritters warm in a low oven. Fry the rest of the batter in the same way, always making sure the oil is very hot before frying more fritters. When all the fritters are fried, arrange them on a platter and serve immediately.

NEVER MIND AGE, LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE Don't Let Age Stop You!
A
ge has become something that governs people, especially women. We become convinced that we are "too old" or "too young" to do things. This is a horrible lie that too many women accept as truth, just because many people claim it to be true.
do so. It may be difficult, especially if it is something to do with a spouse, family member, or close co-worker. But more often than not, if the problem is discussed with the other person, or if you take steps to avoid the subject that is causing the problem, you can alleviate much of the negativity.
In truth, our age dictates very few things about what we can and can’t do. Our health: physical, mental, and emotional, is what dictates what we are capable of. Even if you aren’t trying to reach outside of your "proper" age limits, every woman can live her best life, no matter what her age is.
If the person or subject cannot be dealt with nicely, you may need to take more drastic measures. Removing yourself from the situation or from the influence of the problematic person may be hard, because it could mean relocating your job or home. But if the person or situation is causing problems and negativity every day, you need to ask yourself if it is worth it. Nobody should have to live with pain or depression every day, and if you can fix it, you should think very hard about doing so.
If you feel you aren’t living your best life possible, the first thing to do is to figure out why you feel that way. Often there is something a woman is going through or dealing with on a daily basis that inhibits her ability to live to her fullest extent. This could include issues at home or work. If there is something in your daily life that is causing anger, stress, or any other negative feelings, take a good look at it. If it is something that can be remedied,

To help live your best life, you should definitely look into an exercising routine. No matter what age a woman is, she can improve her health and life by having a daily schedule for exercise. If you already have one, great! If not, talk to your doctor or personal
trainer to get some advice on the best type of exercise for you. Keep in mind it does not necessarily have to be strenuous to be healthy, just a walk around the block each day can improve circulation and mood. Another thing to think about is how you look each day. You certainly don’t have to look stunning every day in order to be happy, but just look in a mirror and think about what you see. Are you tired of the hairstyle you’ve had for the last five years? Then change it! Going to a beauty salon to update your hair and makeup can do wonders for a woman’s life. When you feel like you look good, it boosts your self-esteem and reminds you that you are a unique person of great worth. There are many ways a woman can work towards living her best life. Some are simple to accomplish, others are not so simple, but may be crucial to living happily for a long time. Take a close look at your life and relationships, and see what steps you can take toward moulding your best life.

WHY SWIMMING IS GOOD FOR YOU If You Have a Pool, Use It !
T
he list of swimming benefits is extensive, but definitely worth knowing. Many people call swimming the perfect exercise. Its appeal spreads across all age groups and physical conditions. There are various reasons to use the natural movements associated with water activities. For strength building, weight loss, and recreation, swimmers everywhere are gaining health benefits even when unaware. So, how can it help you? A total body workout Swimming works the entire body. It improves muscle strength and flexibility; encouraging good posture in the process. Endurance is greatly increased, along with calorie burning. But perhaps the most significant benefit is how swimming affects your heart. It is excellent for your cardiovascular system because of the positive way it generates oxygen without overworking your heart. Blood flow to the heart and lungs becomes more efficient and your resting heart rate is reduced. Another advantage to swimming is that it effectively tones your upper and lower body; incorporating virtually all of the major muscle groups. Techniques like the backstroke, freestyle, and the breaststroke are particularly good at targeting the most
64 The Grapevine
number of muscles at once. Using the arms, legs, and lungs together boosts acrobatic capacity. You will build heart muscle; optimizing the way it pumps blood. Steadily increasing your heart rate and triggering muscle activity makes swimming the total body workout. Low injury risk One of the best swimming benefits is that there is no pressure put on your bones, joints, or connecting tissue. This makes it different than other exercises like running or jogging. Buoyancy makes swimming extremely safe because it effectively lowers your body weight to 1/10th less than your land weight. Because of the water’s support, the risk of injury is substantially less. A lot of athletes swim while recovering from other sports injuries to rebuild strength without worrying about the impact of their own weight. In fact, swimming is such a low-impact activity; pregnant women enjoy it to deal with the strain of carrying a baby. Being in the water increases circulation and builds the shoulder and abdominal muscles. Weight Loss The benefits of swimming also encompass efficient caloric burn. The average swimmer burns the
same amount of calories in one hour as a runner does after running six miles. The specific burn rate is 3 calories per mile for every pound of body weight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds and swim one mile in 30 minutes, you have just burned 900 calories in an hour. It is worth noting that several factors should be considered when calculating how much weight you will lose. Intensity and your current weight are relevant to any form of exercise. With swimming, as you build intensity, you will burn more calories. Using the above example at a moderate intensity level, you would potentially burn around 600 calories per hour. But take your time and be careful not to rush into any long sessions. Most experts advise beginning with a 12 to 20 minute time limit for beginners. Maximize other workouts If you already work out using weights or other equipment, cross-training is among the swimming benefits you will experience. Before a workout, it is a great way to warm up and loosen muscles; preparing them for activity. After you have finished working out, swim a few laps to cool down and relax your muscles; again keeping them

flexible. A post-workout swim helps muscles recover by moving blood through them; it also helps you ease back into a normal state of breathing. Athletes use swimming to give them an edge. They notice improvement in strength and endurance with whatever sport or workout they engage in. Psychological benefits Stress reduction is vital to staying healthy. By forcing you to control your breathing, swimming circulates more oxygen throughout your body. As a result, it has a relaxing effect; almost like meditation. Plus, you cannot swim while doing other activities, so it allows you to focus with little effort. With practice, you can swim instinctively; having your mind wander off to wherever it feels content. An early morning swim leaves you refreshed and ready to take on the day. Or, an afternoon swim works through all of the daily stresses you encounter. Either

way, there is something soothing about the rhythm of your strokes. It adds to the healing power of the water. Swimming in groups is good for developing healthy interaction and social skills. Joining a water aerobics class or swim team aids in discipline, time management, sportsmanship, and setting goals. Also, it enhances a sense of selfworth; a key ingredient to overall well being. The balanced mindset carries into the classroom as well. In general, swimmers are likely to do better in school. This can be attributed to the balance and boost in self-confidence. Longevity Research shows that regular swimming can actually help you live longer. It reduces and possibly prevents high blood pressure; a major cause of heart disease and strokes. In addition, the weightless environment is easier for aging joints to move in.
People who live a life of little movement often have the most complications. Our bodies need to be active in order to function at an optimal level. When deliberating on all of the health-related reasons to swim, it is normal to look past its recreational value. The variety of water activities transcends just doing laps. You can be creative with exercises and games. Involve friends and family to keep everyone active in a fun way. Remember, all ages can participate, so no one is left out. Be sure to tell everyone to head for the pool to enjoy all of the swimming benefits; and live better and longer.

THE AWESOME MALAGA PICASSO MUSEUM A Place You Must Visit
E
ven after 30 years, the late Picasso still lives; at least through his marvellous masterpieces. Right here in Malaga, Spain, Picasso stands grand in his hometown and birthplace. In his honour, the town has erected a special museum to house some of his best masterpieces in the Museo Picasso, which was previously a palace in the ancient quarter, restored for this particular purpose. It is barely 5 minutes away from the great artist’s birthplace. A Tribute The Malaga Museum that is built in honour of Pablo Picasso, the great and talented artist, has drawn this town into the public eye. The works of the 12th century artist are now available in the artist’s hometown as was his desire. There are only 3 museums in the world which have been dedicated to Picasso’s art pieces, and Malaga’s Picasso Museum is one such museum. Picasso has become an icon to many great and budding artists even in the 20th century where his style and techniques motivate others in today’s modern art forms.
Location One can locate the great artist’s works easily as the dedicated museum is right at the center of the historic city. It is right in the Buenavista Palace that has existed since the 16th century. This preserved and renovated palace houses many of Picasso’s paintings on a permanent basis. It has a large capacity to fill the spacious rooms of this noble house that is very Andalusian in style, although its architecture was influenced by both Renaissance and Mudejar designs. The main financier of restoration works on the Buenavista Palace, Christine Ruiz-Picasso, made the special request of incorporating Andalusian architecture to reflect the grandeur of the great artist and his magnificent works. There are 12 halls in Picasso Museum that showcases about 200 art pieces that are considered ‘permanent’ collection. It has an art gallery that is formed by 4 halls that house temporary exhibits. Along with these exhibition halls, there is a library, an assembly hall, an educational department, and a promotion center with an investigation component.
The permanent collection comprises the great artist’s art pieces which his daughter-in-law, Christine Ruiz-Picasso, has donated or loaned to the museum. There are now 204 permanent pieces on display, with 133 pieces from Christine’s personal collection. Besides another 49 pieces that are on a 10-year loan, Picasso’s grandson, Bernard, also loaned 40 pieces for one year. These are Picasso’s heritage collections which are of immense value that have been presented to his family but have not been viewed by the public. Some of these exquisite pieces are now made available to the public eye such as the 1917 Olga Kokhlova, the 1921/2 Madre y Niño and the 1923 Gorro Blanco. Exhibitions It is not just Picasso’s art paintings that draw in the crowds; he was very much into ceramics and tradition which were from the Mediterranean history which intrigued him. Picasso also loved to dabble in interior decoration besides on the palette. He added sculptures, ceramics and graphics at his first dedicated museum in France.

SEVILLE, CITY OF OPERA Daniel Major links Seville to Opera.
T
o many through out the world, even opera fans it may be difficult to think of Seville; the capital of Andalucía in Spain as a city of opera. After all, when it comes to great opera houses the cities that come to mind more readily are London, New York, Milan, Vienna, Paris and even Sydney; with its legendary opera house however Seville should not be ignored as a city of opera. For it is in this city where several of the greatest operas take place and I mean not in the sense that they are performed in Seville but the stories in their librettos were written about this most cultured city, also known for delightful Spanish folklore dancing and the pageantry of it religious ceremonious . For instance the French opera “Carmen” by Bisset begins in Seville where we find the gypsy who lent her name to the opera

working in a tobacco factory. It is in this factory that she meets “Don Jose”, the simple soldier who in a fit of jealousy would go on to kill the woman he claims to adore. Carmen however is not the only opera story that takes place in Seville, as it is in this city where two of Mozart’s greatest operas; “Figaro” and “Don Giovanni” are also held. “Figaro” being about a faithful servant who fights off attempts by his master (count Almaviva) to steal away the woman (Susana) he is engaged to be married to while “Don Giovanni” is based on the story known as “El Burlador De Sevilla”. Beethoven though more known as a composer of symphonies, did not leave Seville out of his works as his only opera; “Fidelio” takes place in a prison found in the same city as the above mentioned operas. Of course in this argument what could be a clearer example of an opera story based in Seville; then
Rossini’s “Barber Of Seville” which in fact is the story that precedes “Figaro”, in the trilogy that makes use of the same characters. Verdi was without a doubt another great opera composer and he too felt the need to put a story about Seville in to music; which he did when he took the story of “La Forza Del Destino”, naturally based in Seville and made a grand opera out of it. In conclusion I would say that though Paris, Rome and other large cities are not excluded from having opera librettos based in them it is Seville; the city in which the most opera stories take place. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH The Olive Killer Has Arrived.
T
his month I have serious news – the olive killer, xylella, has reached Spanish ground, specifically the Balearics and it can´t be long before it reaches the mainland. Sadly another 'plague' that could destroy a whole way of life, a huge industry and the wonderful look of our countryside. Xylella is a bacteria; a silent but serial killer. And it doesn´t only affect olives, though this is the most impacted host plant to date. It is known to attack some 300 species of trees and shrubs including sweet orange, almonds, cherry, vine and many ornamentals such as oleander, polygala, Spanish broom, periwinkle and mimosa and this diversity is, of course, where the real problem lies.
84 The Grapevine
Across the stony heel of Italy, an area called Puglia has been decimated by the killer since 2013 when it was first detected. In this densely wooded area of some 10 million olive trees, it is reckoned that up to one million of them have been cut down, many of them venerable trees. The Italians resisted the felling order from Brussels which was issued in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease; pictures of farmers weeping whilst their ancient olive groves, their heritage and livelihood, were bulldozed and burnt were heart-wrenching. The war between growers and politicians raged as the fires burned. It now appears that such drastic measures may have been a little heavy handed as newest research seems to indicate that whilst some varieties of olive are more vulnerable, some are
immune and that it does not easily infect other species. However, all this research is in its early stages and the true picture is, largely, still to come. In Spain, lack of funding has prevented much investigation so it is not yet known whether our local varieties of olives are particularly vulnerable. The bacteria was first noted in Mallorca in Porto Cristo in October 2016 and is now in Ibiza too. Both affected areas have just been put under quarantine and exportation of plants or plant material from the islands is now totally prohibited. (Please take note if you are travelling – no sneaky cuttings in suitcases because you just never know!) On Mallorca there are 71 infected trees and on Ibiza 21. To date all are olives, cherries and almonds but ornamentals could also be infected and not yet showing signs. Some 2000 plants in the

immediate area have been destroyed as a precautionary measure and to prevent spread. The bacteria is spread by a sucking insect known as the meadow spittlebug, philaenus spumarius. This little insect, some 5 to 7mm long is the vector. They are variable in colour, ranging through pale beige, brown to black, sometimes with markings. They can only fly up to 100m, hence the general order for all susceptible plants within a 100m radius to be felled, sick or healthy, as a buffer zone and in an attempt to stop the spread into other areas and other countries. Four subspecies of xylella have been identified – fastidiosa, multiplex, pauca and sandyi. The main subspecies in Italy is x. pauca though x. multiplex has also been reported. In Mallorca the first cases have been caused by x. fastidiosa. This seems to indicate that it has not spread from Italy. Furthermore, the bacteria in Spain is genetically different to the Italian strain which has been tested and found to match that found in Costa Rica. Bearing in mind that the bacteria has so many possible host plants and symptoms cannot be detected in the early stages, it is difficult to say, with certainty, where it arrives from. Once the bacteria attacks, death is relatively rapid though large trees can take a few years to die. It slowly restricts water flow from the roots to the plant, a suffocating strangulation and slow death. The first noticeable symptoms are leaf scorch around the margins, a reddening and curling of leaves followed by desiccation, dieback and barelooking branches but these

symptoms can easily be muddled with other diseases/environmental conditions. Early diagnosis, massive pruning and burning of the prunings may help but the difficulty is knowing if you have cut out the problem. If not, you are
a virus that will kill the bacteria and control/elimination of the insect. It is essential to try and limit the outbreak to the Spanish islands. The worst case scenario will bring the battlefields of Italy to mainland Spain. It is, literally, on our doorstep. With the value of the Spanish olive oil market at 1,800 million euro annually, and rising, and millions of livelihoods at risk, the battle and consequences will be enormous. leaving the source to spread to other plants. This bacteria isn´t new; it was first detected in California in 1880 and has badly affected grapevines there through the years. In Brazil, it is orange trees that are attacked. We have lived with it for well over a century and it is not entirely clear why, this time, the effects have been so massive. There is no cure but, in the U.S. and Brazil, there has been some success with genetically modified plants. It works on grapevines and ongoing work is in place but in Europe, of course, the regulations on G.M.O.'s are completely different. In Spain the battle will be centred around the search for

FROM BRIEFS TO KNOCKERS Shortly after moving to Spain, retired UK lawyer Jean Abell was looking for a local charity to volunteer for when she read a Facebook post about a knitting group. The members make and provide, free of charge, knitted prostheses (knockers) for ladies who have had a mastectomy, as an alternative to the heavy silicone prostheses provided by the hospitals. As a busy lawyer, Jean had little spare time and had not knitted for very many years, but, after a period of trial and error, she has now knitted dozens of knockers and is busy promoting the charity in the Axarquia region. The knockers are made from 100% mercerised cotton, with a non-allergenic filling, and are machine washable. They can be made in any bra cup size and are available in a range of colours. The aim of Knitted Knockers: Costa del Sol, is to make the knockers available to every lady who may need them. CAS NEWS Toad Warning and Other Pests With the arrival of spring the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to remind you that this is the mating season for frogs and toads and if you live near a water source you can probably hear them in the evening. These creatures breed in water so they are attracted to ponds, stagnant pools, creeks and river beds. Toads live on land and tend come out at night under damp conditions such as heavy dew or rain. They may even venture into your garden when it has just been watered. If you find a toad in your garden, first secure your dog to a safe place. Then prepare yourself with rubber gloves and some tools such as a bucket or shovel. Next remove the toad safely yet humanely back to its natural habitat like a field or river. Several species of toads in Andalucia are poisonous and can be fatal to your pets if they bite or lick these amphibians. The symptoms of poisoning are drooling or foaming from the mouth, head shaking, vomiting, sneezing, difficulty breathing and convulsions. If you think your pet has been poisoned flush its mouth out with copious amounts of water and contact your vet immediately. Unfortunately, the Pine Processionary caterpillars are still on the march so the above

applies to these pests as well. Additionally, as the weather gets warmer there will be an increase in mosquitoes, sand flies, fleas and ticks. You can prevent your pets' exposure with spot-on treatments and repellent collars. New CAS Shop The new Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. The new premises are 3 times larger than before allowing CAS to improve on the range of quality second-hand clothing, books and bric-a-brac on offer. Donations of like items are always welcome. CAS is also seeking volunteers to work in the shop. Please call in and talk to shop manager Karen for further information. Opening hours are from 10.00am until 2.00pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. The phone number is 689 314 350. Newcomers are welcome to join the regular quizzers and test their smarts with Quiz Hostess Laura. The €3 entrance fee and all raffle proceeds go directly towards helping CAS help animals in need. Food and drink are available at the bar. Advance booking is
