he United Nations has called on Spain to ban children from attending bullfights or bullfighting schools, arguing that exposure to the violent practice has “damaging effects” on minors. Members of the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child raised concerns about the “level of violence” at Spain’s 55 bullfighting schools, recommending that the government set a minimum age of 18 for such training. Even attending bullfights as spectators could have a harmful impact, warned the committee, which questioned a Spanish delegation on child welfare issues last month.

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

T

he Spanish Interior Ministry is conducting an investigation into alleged fraud over the online resale of tickets for a U2 concert in Spain, the country’s education, culture and sports minister, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, announced in Congress. The general tickets – priced between €60 and €70 – sold out in barely 10 minutes, only to reappear for resale between €200 and €952. The Irish rock group has not put on a concert in Madrid for 13 years, and the demand for tickets for the September date was such that the band decided to add a second performance. But the official platform for ticket sales, Ticketmaster, saw the general tickets – priced between €60 and €70 – sell out in barely 10 minutes, only to immediately reappear for resale on other websites such as viagogo.es, tengoentradas.com and stubhub.es, where prices ranged from a minimum of €200 to a maximum €952. The incident prompted authorities to launch an investigation into what was described to the Europa Press

SEVILLE Visit Seville, the Vibrant Capital of Andalucia.

S

eville has much to offer the visitor not only being rich in history with many wonderful historic buildngs it is also a city that epitomises the love of life of the Andalucian people. Seville, or more correctly,Sevilla, is the heart and soul of Andalucia. Home to flamenco, bullfighting and many wonderful buildings it offers the visitor a wide variety of sites and sensations. On the one hand itis a modern bustling Spanish city with one foot very much in the 21st.century, but on the other hand it's long and varied history means that it's other foot is firmly placed in the past. The best place to begin any trip to Seville is in the barrio Santa Cruz which is the old Jewish quarter. Here you are immediately enchanted by the amazing labyrinth of narrow winding passageways with tall ancient buildings towering above you, so closely that if you leaned out of a windowyou could shake hands with someone on the opposite side of the "ancha," or passageway. The one great advantage of these narrow streets is that there is little traffic and the close proximity of

10 The Grapevine

the tall buildings keeps it cool even in the fiercest Sevillian summer heat, a great advantage when you arewandering around hopelessly lost looking for your hotel!! You will notice whole troupes of tourists, map in hand, trying to find their way out, Hampton Court maze has got nothing on barrio Santa Cruz! So be warned, go armed with a very good street plan. The pride of Seville is the Cathedral, the largest gothic building in the world, and the third largest Church, with it's accompanying Giralda. This was originally built by the Moslemsas a minaret to the Great Mosque. However on the fall of the Moslems the Mosque was converted into a Chrisitan Cathedral and the minaret adapted to become the bell tower whose top is adorned with a weather vane in the shape of a female form representing fate. From the top of the Giralda there are stunning views over the whole of the city. The nearby Alczar also started life as a Moorish building, in this case a fortress but it was later taken over by the Christians and became home to King Pedro the Cruel of Castile and his mistress

Maria de Padilla who in the 1360's lived in and ruled from the Alcazar. However he kept the Moorishinfluence by undertaking much renovation work, employing Moorish workmen from Granada and utilising fragments of earlier Moorish buildings in Seville, Cordoba and Valencia. It is a magical place to visit on a summer's night when it is floodlit. By contrast the Casa de Pilatos is a beautiful renaissance building, although it goes without saying there is still with some Spanish MudĂŠjar influence, is a wonderful old house full of antique furniture, paintings, silverware, plates etc. It is open daily to the public except when members of the Royal Family and sundry aristocrats are in residence as they stay there when theycome to Seville. Seville is just a wonderful city to visit, not only are there so many wonderful tourist sites to see but here you can really experience the joyous Spanish love of life. Be sure to try as many tapas bars as possible, take in a flamenco, or more correctly sevilliana, show and try the excellent cuisine. Ruth Polak

assistance for pet owners who cannot afford to have their pets spayed or neutered. We provide financial assistance for low-income pet owners, helping with vets bills, to enable them to obtain medical care for their sick or injured pets. We are dedicated to ensure that no pet has to suffer or be euthanised simply because their owner is financially challenged. We do not have a shelter, but in some cases we can help to arrange foster carers and find forever homes. It is not our policy to rescue stray animals and/or provide funding for open-ended kennelling.”

ACTION 4 ANIMALS Action for Animals Update

G

ood news! Foxy, the little pup I wrote about last month, who was rescued from a rubbish bin, has found her forever home here in Cómpeta. Her foster carers, Rob and Linda McDonagh, fell in love with her. They couldn't bear to part with her and so decided to keep her. Well done, Linda and Rob! And the cats I wrote about, which were urgently seeking new homes due to their owners' illness, are also now safely in their new homes. We've recently been alerted to two areas in the village where a number of feral cats are all needing to be neutered and so we're urgently seeking more people to become part of our ongoing Trap, Neuter, Return project. The work involves humanely capturing the cats, taking them to the vet for neutering and returning them to their original place of capture, where they can live out their normal lives but cannot reproduce. This method is far more humane than extermination and is

14 The Grapevine

also a much more viable and costeffective approach to controlling spiralling feral cat populations. Killing feral cats is inhumane as well as costly and does not solve the problem. The method of trapping, neutering and returning is the only successful, proven way to solve the problem of feral cat overpopulation. And research has shown that in areas where feral cats were eliminated, rat populations rose. If you're interested in becoming part of this important project please contact us or call into our shop for an informal chat and more information. This month I thought I'd let you know a little more about how we spend our money. Here's our mission statement: “Action for Animals is a registered non-profit association in Spain and a UK-registered charity.

So apart from paying rent for our charity shop, utilities and taxes, provision of food and medical care for animals being fostered and for the stray/feral cats in the village, the majority of our expenditure goes towards vets' bills, which despite generous concessions from our vets, often come in at around 2000.00€ each month. Last month we paid for eight microchips and passports, six vaccinations, two antibiotic injections, x rays, check ups, eight tick and flea treatments, five Scalibor collars and the neutering of six dogs and twenty cats. Without your support we cannot continue our work. We rely on you to donate your unwanted goods to us and to shop with us whenever you can. Thank you for helping the animals of Cómpeta and its surrounding villages.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS

I What to do if your tenant does not pay the rent?

I

f you have a rented out a property and your tenant stops paying the rent then you have a problem. What can you do in this case? It is one thing when the rental payment is delayed for a few days but quite another when the tenant stops paying for more than a month. The Urban Leasing Law (LAU) mentions several reasons why the owner / landlord can request the termination of the lease contract and, therefore, the eviction.

notifying the tenant that the debt must be paid within a term of thirty days and also communicating the intention to initiate legal actions in case of non-payment. If the tenant still does not pay, there is no choice but to go to court.

Eviction is a special process through which the landlord asks the court to declare the termination of the contract due to non-payment of rent, and requests that the rented property be returned. In addition, in the same process, you can claim payment of the rent that is owed. But before initiating the process of eviction, you must first write to or telephone the tenant to ask for payment of the overdue amounts and if the tenant does not respond, a formal written communication would have to be made by Buro fax,

The landlord / landlord can legally claim several things: 1. The return of the property (resolution of the contract). 2. The return of the property together with the payment of the debts. 3. Claim exclusively the debt generated without claiming the return of the property, either because you do not want to terminate the contract, or because the tenant has already returned the keys and it is only necessary to claim the debt.

16 The Grapevine

In no case should measures be taken such as changing a lock or cutting off supplies (electricity, water, etc.), as the tenant may legally report the landlord for coercion.

The most common measure taken is the request to terminate the contract and to claim the debts in the same process. Evictions are resolved in a verbal court hearing. If the tenant opposes the claim, a trial would be held and the process would end in a sentence. In other cases, the process will end with a Decree that finalises the eviction process, and which would include the presumed income until the return of ownership of the property occurs. After the Decree the launch must be executed, that is, if the tenant has not left until then, the process of the vacation of the property must be instigated so that the landlord can recover it. After this the sentence to recuperate the monies owed can be carried out by seizing assets from the tenant sentenced to pay the debts owed. Therefore, it is important to have an expert lawyer to advise and manage your claim. Marbella Solicitors Group has a team of specialised lawyers who can help and assist you with this and other topics. However,we then have to squint because of the glare in the room, experience fading of furnishings, suffer the dis-comfort of excessive heat which we combat with air conditioning and thus drive our running costs through the roof! Well there is a long term inexpensive fix; Solar Control Window Tinting - supplied and fitted by us at Solar Shade to glass curtains, glazed balconies, picture windows, conservatories, cars, yachts, really if there's glass we can tint it! What does Solar Control Window Tinting do? As it sounds, it controls the suns heat entering the room through the glazing and therefore making it a comfortable temperature reducing 40+ Celsius to below 30 degrees, which then allows the air onditioning to run on economy thus saving money, but, keeping that all important light and view. The material is bonded internally or externally (depending on glass construction) to the glass

DO YOU REMEMBER THE BULLFIGHT IN CANILLAS DE ALBAIDA? Jenny Napier relives this event from a few years back.

W

hist travelling round Andalucia I have observed, and fallen in love with many parts of Spain and it’s culture.

rapidly increasing snake of cars wound it’s way round the village centre and, after running out of options, headed up to the top of the village. The higher you GETTING THERE climbed the more chaotic the road As with anything that happens in The bull fight is undoubtedly an the area the event was proceeded got, cars and people everywhere. important part of Southern Spain’s by unsubstantiated gossip – the Further evidence that I was in the culture and still very popular. right place was provided by a bulls would be really little, they However the closest I had got to passing red Peugeot which would be rent a bulls and not be one was looking down onto hurt and someone was even heard contained two matadors in full Malaga’s huge bull ring and a few to say that they would be running dress in the front seat. A huge snatches of ‘Match of the Day’ for the bulls through Canillas round ring had been erected at the bull fights which are televised on top of the village, big enough to Pampilona style! I set off to Saturday’s. Canillas and started to search for seat at least 2,000 people. The I smart ones had got there early the event – with my eyes peeled I loved the balletic movements, the unless a running bull burst round a and sat in the half of the ring in the vibrancy, the colour but was shade, the rest of us sat in full sun corner at any point. that this was not such a good idea for the matador. after all. THE MATADOR A single Matador then enters the THE FIGHT OPENS Of course being in Spain the event ring to engage the bull in close combat. This stage of the fight is did not start on time however in very un-spanish like fashion it got basically a stylised dance. There seem to be a number of steps going only 20 minutes after the which are all precisely performed stated time. About 13 men in the by the matadors. Some appear in full colourful regalia walked into every fight and some are reserved the ring in two lines headed by a for only the seriously brave or matador on a horse. The crowd warm up started with the matador stupid – such as engaging the bull while on your knees. This and horse performing some particular move was surprisingly Spanish dressage – very popular. Each fight was impressive stuff. punctuated with the Matador simply turning his back on the bull The first bull obviously had a premonition that entering the ring and staring at the crowd to receive applause. was not a good idea as it took some considerable effort to get him into the ring. When he did run THE BULLS DEATH The matador gets the bull to out he charged into the ring charge to his side. At the moment ramming the sides with his horns the bulls neck is level with the and looking very angry and very big. He was completely black with matadors body he plunges a sword straight down into the thick muscles, a huge back, animal - the idea being to pierce enormous thighs and two very its heart. Once the matador has large, very sharp horns. Some of the performers started to leap out run the bull through with the sword the animal quickly weakens and of slits in the side of the ring and to catch the bulls attention causing drops to it’s knees and then collapses. A different sort of it to run from one side of the ring to another - a tactic to tire it out. At performer then steps forward and rams a short knife into the top of this stage the bull is too fit to be engaged safely so the performers the bulls head. 10 minutes from had to keep running back through bursting in to the ring the first bull the slits in the side of the ring just was dead - at least I hoped it was dead because the bulls ears were before the bull rammed the ring then sawn off and given to the behind them. matador. THE PICADORES THE LAP OF HONOUR Two of the performers were While the bulls body is dragged dressed slightly differently to the others and these were revealed to out of the ring by a cart horse, it’s tongue lolling out of it’s mouth, the be picadors. this time is a real crowd pleaser he takes many more risks and gets trampled once, pinned to the ring sides and belted by the bulls head twice. Amazingly there is no blood and apparently no serious injury as every time the matador gets up he does another even crazier stunt. The crowd love it. On his lap of honour I see that he looks about 16. Apparently the matodores are trainees. In just under an hour three bulls have been dispatched. The grand finale is a fourth bull which has to face a matador on a horse. MY CONCLUSION I was surprised at my own reaction to the death of the bull. I knew it was coming, like my steak rare, I am not squeemish and the bulls end was not so terribly gory. However watching an animal that had a few minutes ago been savagely alive become nothing more than a carcass was profoundly shocking. I do not like the idea of death, that I might die, that those close to me might and frankly I prefer not to think about it. At the bull fight you are made to. Reflecting on the experience my two most distinct memories are 1) of a white horse, eyes rolling in fear and legs trembling being made to face a bull and charge it head to head, and 2) a bull, chest heaving and exhausted peeing itself in fear of the people around it. What is Art? I think it is an experience, a reaction, and unique to each person. I have decided that a bull fight constitutes Art. But I did not like it. Jenny Napier, Competa

She was glad she found this special place in Competa and that she was able to give it a new lease of life with lots of Art and Events. The Gallery space feels authentic and cosy but at the same time presents a modern look showing Contemporary Art. With a beautiful mosaic by AnneBarbara Lenzin in the welcoming and atmospheric garden, the trees and flowers add natural beauty to this contemplative place. uwke Loth is a sculptor, but also makes drawings and paintings. Her Art is exhibited permanently in the gallery, whilst other artists are also showing their work. Lieuwke organises the very successful International Art Symposium once a year. The 4th is planned for half of the month of October 2018. Art that was made during the first 3 Symposia will now be shown during this year's Art Walk. BRAIDED EASTER EGG BREAD A bit of fun to try for this time of year.

Ingredients 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided 1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 tablespoons butter 2 eggs 5 whole eggs, dyed if desiredI Method In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt and yeast; stir well.

at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour. Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.

Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick.

Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well.

Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs.

Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup

TAPAS But what is tapas and where did it originate??.

T

apas is simply a small snack or appetiser taken with a drink or two at lunchtime or in the early evening before the main meal. The Spanish generally won't drink without eating something and originally these small snacks were given free to anyone who bought a drink.

All these wonderful flavours and we haven’t even started cooking yet!Spain's landscape is extremely diverse and covers areas such as mountain ranges and dusty plains, olive and fruit groves plus fertile orchards and rich arable lands. Spain also has climate extremes. Regions that are cold and wet, regions that are hot and dry, and just about everything in between. It has a huge coastline, facing both the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea. Hardly surprising then, that the cuisine of its coastal regions is very heavily based on fish and seafood. The northern coastal regions have both fish and seafood from the Atlantic ocean and some of the finest cattle, sheep and dairy foods in Spain. The climate here is relatively cold and wet so recipes tend to be hearty, warming and filling. The hot southern coastal region is the land of olives, olive oil and sizzling fried fish from around the long coastline. The food of the

OASIS HAIR AND BEAUTY SALON An Interview with Sacha from OASIS in Torre Del Mar

O

asis Hair and Beauty Salon can be found just outside the entrance to the Aqua Velez water park and opposite Mercadona supermarket in Torre Del Mar. It is a fabulous salon where you can have a wide variety of Hair and beauty treatments, spend a pamper day with the girls or book the family in for a special occasion such as a wedding or communion. I met with Sacha who started Oasis in May of last year.

I arrived at Oasis for the interview to find it was very easy to park nearby. My first impressions from the outside were its notable size and beautiful presentation and this continued as I entered the salon. The girls I met were extremely friendly and bubbly, offering tea or coffee whilst I waited for Sacha to be available to talk. Glancing round I realised Oasis wasn’t just the salons name but also its decor which created a relaxing environment to be pampered in. In the centre of the salon are six

WHAT GOES THROUGH THE HEAD OF AN AMATEUR MTB RACER Sol Findley Competes in a Mountain Bike Race

R

ain was forecast for today here in our little corner of Andalusia. Goody, good, I think, that should give a mud plough like me a slight advantage in the MTB half marathon I'd signed up for. By the time my soigneur and I leave our village at just past 8, the sun is rising, not a cloud in the sky. The hour long drive to the start at a little village called El Borge is impossibly scenic in the morning light. It is also very hilly, of course.

After the usual neutralised gallop to the start on said dry riverbed, the local riders get gridded, among them 3 women. I make sure I'm at the front of the rest of the gang, and we are off. Having said dry riverbed, it's actually more like a dirt track, double, and slightly down of course, being an ex river.

For probably the first time ever in a bike race I don't panic! Hurrah! Probably because I've decided that I'm not going to place so the pressure's off. The track is fast, so I put the hammer down, just for We arrive in good time, park up on fun. I pass 2 women. I might not be the dry riverbed also acting as an a match for those skinny minnies overflow car park. Still sunny, and on a climb, but this bray horse about 12 degrees. Oh well, I think, here has the weight and muscle at least there's a big women's field power for exactly this terrain! I satisfy myself that I should now be this time, a whopping 10 out of 200! There will be someone to play in top half of the 10. with, and half of them will be really good so there's no pressure on Then the course leaves the me. There's a gang of guys, mostly riverbed, flirts briefly with tarmac, juniors or under-23s by the looks and kicks up. Hard. Like 19-20% of them, in Astana and Kazakhstan hard. About half a mile later, one of kit. We chat to them, turns out they the girls I passed earlier comes are the National MTB team, here past me. Ah well, I knew that was for a 2 month training camp. going to happen. Course then

80 The Grapevine

settles to smaller ups and downs, and the first proper descent comes into the next little place called Cutar, where there's a feed stop. Just before that, another girl comes past, so I decide not to stop when she does, just to make up time. T here's my soigneur on the corner , always a welcome sight. Another descent, and said girl from food stop appears again, clearly a better descender than I am. I catch her up on a climb, and upon spotting her blonde plait, decide to start a conversation to distract her. She is Norwegian, and what with me having a Norwegian name, we settle to a nice few kilometres riding together and chatting about life, racing etc. I reassure her that she doesn't have to worry about me, as I'm in Master 50 category. She says she's just out to have a good ride. Those are always the ones you have to watch, I think to myself. We hit another evil climb, including an over 20%er with loose rocks

and gravel, and I concentrate on finding a good line. When I get to the top, she's gone. I can see her pushing her bike. You only have to hit one little thing on that sort of surface, and that's it, you have to get off. I don't see her again until she comes in to the finish some time after me. First proper big descent, and on the 2nd corner, there's a bloke sitting looking not very well, with his bike in the ditch, missing its front end. There are 2 blokes with him so I carry on. At some point during the climb to the highest point on the course at 820 metres, another girl comes past. I'm too busy looking at the beautiful views to care, convinced the podium is gone anyway. The organiser of the MTB race I won a few weeks ago rides past, shouting, Hola, Sol. That's nice I ride Hare and Tortoise with a couple of MAMILS, their sheer weight not a match on mine on the ups, and mine not a match

on theirs on the downs, bray horse or not. One of them is wearing a hydrapak with music blaring out of it. The other one is the organiser of the Clasica del Pavo, AKA The Turkey Race, the annual preChristmas hill climb which I've ridden twice now. He says hello.

going, keep going, nope, it's not that gantry, that's was the start, ah, there it is, where I signed on!

At last, the 5km to go sign, and THE BIG DESCENT back into town! I can see another girl a few hairpins back on the way up so I decide that discretion isn't a better part of valour today. I bomb it down, also worried that The Norwegian might catch me. I even manage a few drifts around corners, much to my delight.

Category win for me, which is nothing new, as there are never any other over 50-s in these races. But what pleases me more than the win is that I do get my overall podium spot, on the third step. Which means that for just the brief 4km at the start, along the riverbed, I was ahead of all the other girls. That's got to be worth a beer!

Back on the riverbed now for the last km, and it's fast! I'm also completely on my own. I ride up the ramp to town guided by local police, who, like absolutely everyone involved with the race, are fantastic. I realise I have no idea where the finish is! Keep

Phew! High fives with the other girls, and the Kazakhs, who appear to have taken most of the top 5 spots.

Happy riding, folks! Sol Findly

It is often used as a pioneer planting because of its ease of establishment, speedy growth and hardiness. Its exotic good looks and long-lasting, fragrant orchid-like blooms make it a favourite planting. The leaves are heart-shaped, thick, rounded and deeply divided into two lobes. In autumn, the 10cm wide blossoms open, usually a deep rosy pink-purple but they can be paler. The flowers are followed by long slender seedpods which can hang on the tree throughout the winter. The wood is rosy-white in colour, turning light brown when exposed to the atmosphere. Finegrained, hard and durable, it is often used for making household and agricultural tools. The leaves, flower-buds, flowers and young seedpods are eaten as a vegetable

This centre works to support veterans of any conflict, illness while serving and those injured in service. It provides facilities to improve educational, physical and mental needs. In other words it aims to provide skills, physical improvements, and strength to anyone who served in the military when their health has suffered in any way,. Some will be able to return to military life, but others will need to improve their skills in order to have a life beyond the military. Although based in Scotland the facilities are available to anyone who needs help and is not supported by any other charity, only by the RBL and donations. If you have any interest in what we do, please come along and join us, we will welcome you and appreciate your support. .

The 10th Art Walk is organised for the 5th time by Lieuwke Loth & and a volunteer team. Leaflets can be collected at the tourist office in Competa and souvenirshop La Posada, avda. Constitucion.

freeze to death at virtually no expense? The woman who perpetrated this “procedure” was actually charged and jailed. However the charge of animal cruelty was a small part of her sentence. The much more important crime according to the judge was that the public money she received to carry out some sort of reasonable destruction of the animals, she had simply pocketed while the freezer was full. Toad Warning and Other Pests With the arrival of spring the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to remind you that this is the mating season for frogs and toads and if you live near a water source you can probably hear them in the evening. These creatures breed in water so they are attracted to ponds, stagnant pools, creeks and river beds.

CAS NEWS Taking it to the Streets! While the urgent care of animals in peril is an obvious priority, equally important is an understanding of the causes of animal abuse, and to address the measures necessary for its prevention. In the latter case, the laws are on the books so all that is needed is to keep beating on the town halls' doors demanding their implementation. An example of this occurred in a march in Málaga 4 February 2018 protesting the horrific abuse of dogs at the hands and hooks of hunters. The Coast Animal Society (CAS) was present in solidarity with over ten different animal rescue organizations. The beginning of February means the end of the hunting season with grotesque consequences for thousands of these noble, lovely, timid Galgos, Spanish Greyhounds. This is not the place to describe the horrors visited on them, but if you are interested in understanding this travesty, Google up “Galgo abuse in Spain” or visit our comrades at www.galgofreedom.com.

“Perreras matan/Protectoras salvan” (Pounds kill/Shelters save) - Rincón de la Victoria, 20 January 2018 Costa Animal Society (CAS) members also took part in a demonstration protesting the barbaric atrocities committed at the perreras. The perreras are not, as they would like you to believe, animal shelters but killing stations run for profit. Animals brought to the perreras, generally by the police, have to be destroyed after ten days if no one claims them. (The perreras generally do nothing to facilitate this.) If this is your business, it's not hard to imagine that expenses such as decent food, medical treatment, clean, comfortable kennels, etc. are cut down to the bare minimum to maximise profits. If it's money you're after, this leads to a riot of the imagination. Here is but one example of a shrewd costcutting measure: When it comes time to destroy the animal, why waste money on anaesthetics, needles, medicine, a veterinarian, when you could just put the animal in a deep freezer to slowly

Toads live on land and tend come out at night under damp conditions such as heavy dew or rain. They may even venture into your garden when it has just been watered. If you find a toad in your garden, first secure your dog to a safe place. Then prepare yourself with rubber gloves and some tools such as a bucket or shovel. Next remove the toad safely yet humanely back to its natural habitat like a field or river. Several species of toads in Andalucia are poisonous and can be fatal to your pets if they bite or lick these amphibians. The symptoms of poisoning are drooling or foaming from the mouth, head shaking, vomiting, sneezing, difficulty breathing and convulsions. If you think your pet has been poisoned flush its mouth out with copious amounts of water and contact your vet immediately. Unfortunately, the Pine Processionary caterpillars are still on the march so the above applies to these pests as well. Additionally, as the weather gets warmer there will be an increase in mosquitoes, sand flies, fleas and ticks. You can prevent your pets' exposure with spot-on treatments and repellent collars.
