I don't normally mention politics in the Editors note but we are approaching some very changing times. On the Thursday 26th 2016 Britain voted to leave the European Union. For the UK to leave the EU it had to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which gives the two sides two years to agree the terms of the split. Theresa May triggered this process on 29 March, 2017, meaning the UK is scheduled to leave at 11pm UK time on Friday, 29 March 2019. No one really knows what this will mean to the UK or the British living outside the UK but what we do know is there will have to be changes ahead and it will start at the end of this month. Locally in Spain there is also political changes, with the Spanish Prime Minster calling the third general election in 4 years. This is sheduled for April 28th. This will occur just before the local, European and several regional elections on May 26th. So potential political changes and are also occurring closer to home. More locally, Nerja holds its residents day on Sunday 8th March which is usually a fun family day out running from 12.00 noon to 5pm with stalls and food venues put on by clubs and local charities. Don't forget next month is our property and property management feature. If you are an Estate Agent or a private seller do get in touch to publicise your properties. children's playgrounds, and smoking rooms in airports. At the time it was considered one of the most restrictive laws against tobacco but it stopped short of outlawing smoking in front of minors in private places, such as vehicles or households.

P NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

I

talian police have taken possession of more than two tonnes of cocaine in the largest drugs seizure in the country in 25 years, after a sting operation involving three other nations across two continents. The drugs, discovered in 60 bags in a cargo container at the Port of Genoa, have a total value of €500m (£436m) and were found with the help of the British, Colombian and Spanish police. The cocaine belongs to various drug-trafficking organisations associated with an organised armed group known as the “Gulf Clan”, which makes use of contacts in numerous European ports where drug expeditions are carried out. The container set off from Colombia and arrived in Genoa last week and was then destined for Barcelona in Spain. To catch the traffickers in Barcelona, the Italian investigators replaced the cargo of drugs 1,801 bricks of pure cocaine - with salt and let it continue on its journey. In the Catalan city, Spanish police arrested the alleged recipient of the shipment, a 59-year-old Spaniard.

Spanish father has lost custody of his children after the provincial court of Cordoba, in southern Spain, ruled that his addiction to tobacco was toxic to his children’s health. The father had been sharing custody of his children, aged 10 and 13, with his ex-wife since his divorce in 2017. The children had complained they had to share an “environment full of smoke” in their father’s house, according to the sentence seen by Euronews. In the text, the eldest son said his father slept in a room with a mattress and air conditioning after having smoked in it. “In this situation and wanting to avoid a health risk for the minors, it is evident that the father’s way of living puts in danger the health of his children in an irresponsible way. He ignores everything else except his addiction,” the sentence read, adding that it wasn’t logical for the children to be in a place that would otherwise present a risk to the public. The sentence also notes that the father prioritises his smoking over the health of his children. In Spain, the 2011 antitobacco law banned smoking in closed public spaces and accesses to hospitals, schools,

olice officers investigating the tragic discovery of the body of a newborn baby in a dustbin in a Madrid district have announced that the baby was born alive. The gruesome discovery was made by a homelless Romanian national rummaging through the public waste bin located on calle Laguna in the Carabanchel area of the city. The man saw what looked like the body of a baby inside a plastic bag and so the police were called and responded immediately, accompanied by a paramedic unit who confirmed that the child was dead. The subsequent post mortem confirmed that the baby was born alive, and not in a hospital, and so an investigation is now underway to locate the mother as a suspect of murder.

A

dead body found in a car boot in Alicante City was that of a Spaniard who was killed in a drugs shootout last December. It was discovered after Calle Paraguay residents contacted the police about an increasingly bad smell coming from a vehicle that had been parked there for weeks. Local Police officers sent to investigate immediately contacted the National Police when they saw that the number plate belonged to a vehicle that ignored a police roadblock on the day of the shootings. On opening the Citroen’s boot, they found the body of “a very large man”, sources said afterwards. The same sources confirmed that the body belonged to a Spanish man who disappeared during a confrontation between rival drugs’ gangs in Petrel early last December.

THE SIESTA

The Spanish Afternoon Nap

History The siesta, an afternoon nap usually taken after lunch, lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. The nap was historically taken during the hottest hours of the day by people who worked in farming – until the mid-20th century many Spaniards worked in agricultural work where the siesta was common. Taking a post-lunch break was vital to avoiding the scorching midday sun.

Some theories say that the origins of ‘la siesta’ go back to the Spanish Civil War from 1936-39. This war brought large amounts of poverty to Spain and as a result, many people had to hold down two or more jobs to make enough The word “siesta” comes from the money to put food on the table. pistola bread is toasted and used for making an earthy type of bread soup called sopas. El Roscón de Reyes Roscón de Reyes is a large, doughnut-shaped sweet bread which is typically eaten with hot chocolate on 6th January to celebrate the Epiphany. The cake is usually shared as a ritual in the New Year, and contains a small object as a ‘surprise’ for one of the eaters.

TYPES OF BREAD IN SPAIN

S

pain has many different breads, but the product that best reflects the geographic and cultural diversity is the empanada, because each region has adapted the fillings to the local produce. Religion has played a very important role in shaping Spanish baking traditions. During the Muslim invasion, Spaniards stated their Christianity by eating a lot of pork, hence the wide use of chorizo in empanada fillings and the inclusion of pork fat where other cultures would use butter. Many specialities such as tarta de Santiago are linked to a particular Christian saint, and Spanish nuns are famous for the range of cakes and biscuits sold in their convents. Hogaza Hogaza bread is especially popular in the northern areas of Castille but can also be found in other regions and indeed other Spanish-speaking countries. It is a soft, rustic crusty bread, round in shape and weighing about 500 g. La Ensaimada Ensaimada is a spiral-shaped soft

14 The Grapevine

cake from the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, typically eaten with coffee for breakfast or in the afternoon. The name ensaimada comes from saïm, the local name for a kind of reduced pork fat used in the original recipe. Los Polvorones Polvorones are small cakes made of almond, flour, sugar, and animal fat. They are typically eaten at Christmas and come from the village of Estepa in Seville. Each small cake is wrapped in thin paper and you crush it between both hands to prevent it from crumbling when you bite into it. La Madalena Shaped exactly like fairy cakes, madalenas have a distinctive Spanish flavour because they are made with olive oil instead of butter. They are rarely eaten by themselves as they do not have a filling or topping, but are delicious dunked in coffee, hot chocolate or milk. La Pistola Pistola bread is a crusty, medium sized loaf. It is the most common everyday bread in the Madrid region of Spain. In other regions,

El Pa de pages Pa de pages is a crusty rustic bread from Catalonia, in north east Spain. It is the perfect bread for pa amb tomàquet, a slice of lightly toasted bread rubbed with a clove of garlic, covered with fresh tomato pulp and topped with a slice of Serrano ham and a dash of olive oil. El Bizcocho Bizcocho is literally translated as sponge. Bizcochos are fingershaped sponge biscuits which are specially designed to be dunked into a hot drink. La Empanada Empanada is a large rectangular pie with a savoury filling that is normally cut into portions. Every region of Spain has its own variety of empanada with fillings that range from chorizo to octopus, including a number of vegetarian versions. Individual empanadas are known as empanadillas and can be either baked or fried. La Tarta de Santiago Tarta de Santiago is made of almond, egg, sugar and butter. It is from Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region, north west Spain. It is named after Santiago (St James) who is the patron saint of Galicia and Spain. The cross of Santiago is indeed always featured on the top of this tart. Just like Catalonia and the Basque Country, Galicia has its own official language, Galician, which has equal status to Spanish.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Five Steps To Be Followed For Dealing With An Expat Or Non-Resident Inheritance In Spain

O

rganizing an inheritance in Spain is a difficult task for anyone, especially if you don’t know the Spanish law.

In this post we explain the basic steps to be followed when a nonresident or expat owning assets in Spain passes away. It is necessary to carry out a legal procedure in order to change the ownership of any of the deceased assets into the name of the heirs. 1st Step: Get an original death certificate. This official document is normally provided by the funeral company or it can also be obtained from the Civil Registry. 2nd Step: Get the original certificates of the last will (if any) signed by the deceased person, as well as the certificates of any life insurance policies in place. With these certificates we can confirm if the deceased person had made a will in Spain. There

16 The Grapevine

are two possibilities: The existence of a will made in or outside of Spain. If this is this case the assets would be distributed according to the wishes of the deceased. Non-existence of a will. If the deceased had never made a will, the distribution of his assets would be made according to the laws of his nationality. 3rd Step: The heirs or relatives of the deceased would be required to sign an inheritance deed in front of a Spanish Public Notary in order to accept and distribute all the assets. Please, be aware that debts are also inherited, so it is important to confirm that the value of the assets is higher than any possible debts before accepting the inheritance.

euros per heir (in case of direct relatives: spouse and children), so in most cases there wouldn’t be any inheritance tax to be paid. The inheritance taxes must be filed within 6 months from the date of the death. 5th Step: If the deceased owned real estate you should then take the inheritance title deeds to the Land Registry or if the deceased had funds, bank accounts or life insurance policies the Inheritance deeds should be taken to the corresponding banks /insurance companies. We recommend hiring the professional services of a solicitor so this procedure can be carried out in an efficient and speedy manner. See Advert Opposite

4th Step: Filing Inheritance Tax Form 650 with the local Tax Office. For EU citizens these are allowances of up to 1.000.000

FIRST AID TRAINING AND CPR

Training Site in Competa

F

irst-Aid training is an invaluable skill especially CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), as almost anyone anywhere could suffer from an SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) or heart-attack, which is a situation that may occur for many reasons, most commonly from a form of heart disease, however even seemingly healthy people even young people can have an SCA. Common causes may also include; being overweight / obese, exertion or exercise and even stress! In many cases there is a chance of survival, which can be increased by the fastest possible response for help, activation of local EMS “Emergency Service” protocols, i.e. calling for an ambulance and the administration of CPR. If possible, with the aid of an AED (Auto External Defibrillator / in Spanish a “DEA”) many villages now have them in public places and some minimal training is required to use one effectively, with the additional aid of CPR as well. What Happens in a Cardiac Arrest? Everyone should know CPR and be able to perform it, to at least a basic life-saving exercise, the process is very simple. Your heart is a pump which pumps oxygen from the lungs and nutrients from

food (which produce energy) around the body to all your cells which require oxygen to perform normal functions, it also pumps the waste products, including carbon dioxide back from the cells in the bloodstream to be expelled from the lungs and other body parts. When we perform CPR, we are simply taking over the function of the heart and manually acting as a pump until medical help can arrive, this process can buy valuable time, especially if it happens in a remote area like the Campo or a town/village without an ambulance service or hospital/clinic. The additional help of an AED unit can really make a difference, in literally “restarting the heart” pumping with an electric shock. In many villages and towns AED/DEA units are available and there should be a very clear protocol for using them in an emergency, with a list of trained people and contact details published by the town hall or local authority. CPR Courses run every other week, class is around 3 hours with theory and practice on a manikin (x2 per month, unless otherwise needed) The CPR Course is valid for 2 years and includes a Certificate to ERC Standards for just €35.00 euros. We are also open to interest from businesses who would like training. Other courses include: BLS Basic Life Support, AED/DEA First-Aid, Oxygen First-Aid, First-Response (CPR/BLS together), Sports Injuries First-Aid (For anyone involved in sports, with specialist programs for Martial-Arts, Football etc. etc.) and First-Aid Instructor Training for Sports Instructors, Teachers, Trainers, and Coaches anyone who can train or teach… Also, First-Aid Trainer Programs to train instructors. Cabra A Romero Cabra al Romero is a relatively new goat's cheese. The dairy that makes it is based in La Mancha in Central Spain and is the same company that makes the famous Manchego cheese. The Cabra al Romero cheese is coated with rosemary, perfuming the inside without being overwhelming. Idiazabal Cheese Originally produced high in the Pyrenees above Pamplona, this rustic ewe's milk cheese was often smoked in the rafters of the shepherds' huts. Today, Idiazabel is made all over the Basque country in both factory and farmstead, from unpasteurised milk. The cheese is produced in small drum shapes in varying sizes. Arzula Illoa Arzua Ulloa is also called Queso de Ulloa and is made in Galicia, in the the North Western part of Spain. This is a pale, soft and creamy cow´s milk cheese which becomes stronger in flavour the longer it ripens and matures. The cheese can be made with either pasteurised or raw milk and can range in age anywhere from two weeks to about six months. Torta de Casar Torta refers to its shape, in Spanish legends, shepherds who first made the cheese realised that the inside of the cheese remained semi liquid, causing the middle of the cheese to sink. The shepherds used the word 'atortao', meaning 'cake-shaped'. Torta de Casar has an intense aroma with a well developed flavour with a touch of bitterness which comes from the rennet planet used in coagulation. The texture is smooth and melts in your mouth with very little saltiness.

FAMOUS SPANISH DRINKS Have You Sampled Them All Yet!

T

here are of course the famous Spanish drinks we all know — sangria, wine and beer — but there are many more that most tourists are not familiar with — sweet creamy horchata, icy fruity granizados, and sherry-based rebujito cocktails, that are just as popular among the locals.ç Sangria No drink is more identifiable with Spain than sangria. The traditional ingredients in sangria include red or white wine mixed with fruits, such as pineapple, nectarines, pears, apples, peaches, and other fruit. Get a jug with a meal while sitting out on a sunny terrace before retiring for an afternoon siesta. Unfortunately, as with most cliches and stereotypes, the real situation is different from the popular conception. Not everyone drinks sangria in Spain, though. In fact, most natives drink beer in Spain, and you often won't get real sangria in many bars and restaurants.

46 The Grapevine

Sherry Your best bet for sampling Andalusia's famed fortified wine is to go to its home base. Sherry comes from the city of Jerez in Andalusia. In fact, it's called sherry because the Arabic name for Jerez is Sherish—and the town is packed with tabancos, or small bars where you can sample glasses of sherry, refill your own bottles, graze on tapas, and even catch live flamenco shows. Vermouth Vermouth is one of the biggest trends in Spain right now, with specialised vermouth bars popping up all over major cities, cafés creating their own homemade versions in large glass jars, and hotels organizing vermouth parties, complete with nibbles and live music. Vermouth is a type of sweet fortified wine and comes in red or white, but most often red. In Spain it’s served straight and is usually paired with an olive or a slice of orange. It is said to go well with small fishy plates of tapas such

as boquerones (small pickled anchovies). Vermouth is drunk ‘a la hora del vermut’ — literally ‘at the hour of vermouth’, or around midday, as a type of aperitif before the main meal of the day. Horchata A cooling creamy drink for summer, horchata (or orxata as it is also spelled in Valencian and Catalan) can be found in specialised horchatarias or ice cream parlors. It’s essentially tiger nut milk, squeezed from the tiger nut (not actually a nut at all, but a small root vegetable) or chufa in Spanish. It tastes slightly similar to almond milk and is often mixed with cinnamon. Granizado Delicious thirst-quenching drinks to have during Spain’s unbearably hot summers, granizados are like fruit frappés, made from crushed ice mixed with fruit juices or syrups. The most typical is granizado de limón (lemon flavored), however, you

To advertise call 637 028 873

can get everything from strawberry to melon. Tinto de Verano Forget sangria, a tinto de verano is what the locals drink. Pretty similar actually, tinto de verano translates as summer wine, and is red wine mixed with a fizzy lemonade type drink. It’s best sipped in summer, accompanied by a plate of tapas. Cerveza Beer is, of course, a favorite Spanish drink, ordered not by the pint but by the caña (small glass) or tubo (long glass). Beer, like most alcoholic drinks here, is rarely drunk without some type of nibble on the side, be it a free bowl of nuts, olives, popcorn, crisps, or a larger plate of tapas. Some of the most popular Spanish brands include Estrella Damm, Moritz, San Miguel, Cruzcampo, Alhambra, and Mahou.

Clara For a truly refreshing type of beer in the heat of summer, ask for a clara — a beer mixed with lemon juice, similar to a shandy. Many bars around the country will have claras already pre-mixed on tap. Rebujito Most common in Andalusia, rebujito is a kind of cocktail that mixes sherry with a soft drink such as Sprite. It is often found in Seville and Jerez de la Frontera around the Sherry Triangle, and is typically drunk around Seville’s Feria de Abril and Jerez’s Feira de Caballo (horse fair). Vino Of course we couldn’t make a list of Spain’s most typical drinks, without mentioning one of its most famous — wine (vino in Spanish). Spain is actually the third largest wine producer in the world, behind France and Italy, and has vineyards covering over a million acres. Spanish wine varies greatly throughout the country, so be sure to try the local

variety from wherever you are visiting. Cafe It’s actually impossible to find a bad Spanish coffee, even in the simplest of cafés, and there’s just as many ways to have it as you’ll find on a Starbucks menu. Choose to have it con leche (with milk), cortado (short coffee with a dash of milk), solo (an espresso), con hielo (with ice), carajillo (with a dash of brandy, whisky or rum), or simply cafe (black). Cava Spain’s answer to French Champagne, Cava comes in white or rosé varieties. 95% of Spain’s Cava is produced in the Penedès region of Catalonia, however, you’ll also find some made in regions such as Valencia, Extremadura, La Rioja, and the Basque Country.

HAM IN SPAIN The Main Categories of Spanish Ham.

T

here are five broad categories of cured ham available in Spain today, and they are at least partly differentiated according to the breed of pig from which they were produced. The most common is the Serrano ham, produced from the meat of the European white pig. However, the name Serrano specifically refers to the cut of the ham, rather than a breed used to produce the tasty Jamón. The best examples – salt-cured ham which is dried in mountain (Serrano) air – can be a delicious, cheaper alternative to the more expensive Jamón Ibérico. It is produced as follows: after slaughter, the legs and shoulders of the pig (the finest Jamón is said to come from the hind legs) are preserved with sea salt for two weeks, drawing out the moisture in the meat. After washing the salt off, the hams are hung for about a month before being moved to a Secadero (drying room). There, they will be aged for over 7 months in warm, dry conditions that cause the fat to infiltrate the muscle. Finally, the Jamón is left to settle in a cool bodega for about two months before release. Jamón Ibérico The next step up in the Jamón hierarchy is the priced Jamón Ibérico, produced from a descendant of the European Wild

50 The Grapevine

Boar that is found in small numbers in Dehesas, which are oak forest reserves in south-west Spain. The finest is undoubtedly the Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, which is only made in small quantities from pigs that feast on acorns and justifies its high price with its unrivaled depth of flavor, and texture. The villages of Jabugo in the Sierra de Aracena and Trevelez are famed for producing the tastiest cured ham in Spain, also known as Pata Negra. However, ‘ordinary’ Jamón Ibérico can be produced from mainly grain fed pigs, known as de campo. The hams are aged for over two years before release and offer a more intense flavor than the ubiquitous Serrano ham. Jamón de Cebo Jamón de Cebo is considered superior to de campo ham, as the pigs are fed acorns (bellotas) in addition to the standard grain. This acorn diet permeates into the flavor of the best Ibérico hams, and apparently lowers the level of bad cholesterol when consumed – as if we needed an excuse to enjoy this wonderful delicacy! In addition, there is a category of ham that sits somewhere between the finest Jamón de Bellota and the Jamón Ibérico. Guijuelo Jamón Guijuelo Jamón, a protected designation of origin that lies in the

south-east of the Salamanca province, in Castile-Leon. Although the ham is produced from boars which may not be 100% purebred, it is still held in high regard in Spain. The animals may originate from several regions across Spain: including Andalucia, Extremadura, and Huelva, but the hams must have been cured and aged in the province to qualify as Guijuelo ham. Over 70 towns and villages in the region have the right to produce this succulent, flavorsome Jamón, which can either be classified as Ibérico or as the superior de Bellota, depending on the pig’s diet. In a similar manner to other high-quality Jamón, the Guijuelo curing and aging process can last three years, in contrast to the much shorter period for the standard Serrano ham. The resulting product is sublime – Guijelo Jamón is renowned for its juicy, tender texture and a strong, almost overpowering flavor. It is also admired for its relatively low salt content in comparison to other quality Spanish hams – a benefit of Guijuleo’s extremely dry climatic conditions which allow for a much shorter curing process than in other parts of Spain. Ibérico de Bellota But of course, the most celebrated ham is the Ibérico de Bellota from specific designations in southern Spain, which is protected by strict appellation laws to ensure quality and released in small quantities every year. Wild Boars roam free across Spain’s protected Dehesas, gaining weight from an acorn diet. The curing and aging process has been followed for centuries and remains largely unchanged today, albeit it has been updated with the latest temperature control technology. The final product is simply stunning: a silky, slightly salty ham that astounds first-time tasters with its aroma and flavor. Aficionados of Jamón de Bellota will insist that you consume the ham with little more than plain bread and a glass of Manzanilla Sherry.

While it might not have the same architectural beauty of other Spanish cities, Bilbao offers a different perspective on Spanish art.

3.Burgos Founded in 884, the city of Burgos, also known as the “Land of Castles,” is charming, memorable, and deeply rooted in its medieval history. The charm of this town comes from its northern Castilian ambience and a scattering of medieval monuments like the Cartuja de Miraflores and the Abbey of Santa Maria la Real de Las Huelgas.

However, it wasn’t until the city became the capital of Al-Andalus, the Moorish kingdom of Islamic Spain, that Cordoba rose to prominence as one of the top cities to visit in the country. Awe-inspiring and a treat to the eyes, there is no doubt that Cordoba is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. In fact, it was so beautiful that when it was reconquered by Christians in 1236, most, if not all, of the city’s architecture was left standing. A great place to explore on foot or by bike, the top draw of the city is undoubtedly the mesmerizing Mezquita, which is one of the world’s largest and most iconic Islamic buildings and even has a cathedral built in the center of its many arches and columns. Whether you’re in Cordoba to explore its Islamic architecture or to explore other sites like the Judería, which is the old Jewish quarter, the history and beauty of this city will be unforgettable. 5.Girona Sitting peacefully by the River Onyar, Girona is the largest city in Catalonia and is jam-packed with incredible museums, fantastic galleries, and looming Gothic churches. A trip to Girona provides even the most avid of history fans with a treat for the senses and the mind as it is rich in medieval architecture. Some of the greatest sights in town include the remains of a Roman fortress known Força Vella, the Arab Baths, and Sant Pere de Galligants and Sant Nicolau. Also not to be missed is an exploration of the landscaped garden paths of the Passeig Arqueologic and the imposing watchtowers of the walled Old Quarters. While history is a big part of Girona’s draw, don’t miss out on visits to the more modern activities in town, such as exploring the boutiques, dining on the flavours of Girona, and breaking a sweat at the city’s top sports infrastructures.

6.Granada Granada is a jewel in the Andalusian crown with an interesting history and absolutely breathtaking sights. Named Granada by the Arabs when it was invaded in the 8th century, this city was a stronghold of Islamic Spain and became the last city to be reclaimed by Christian forces in 1492. Thanks to its rich Moorish heritage, the city’s architecture is a marvelous site to behold and has been informally, albeit rightfully, nicknamed the “Land of a Thousand Castles.” Navigate the narrow and winding streets of the Albayzîn for an innercity adventure or wander through the quarter of Realejo and its many house gardens. One of the absolutely essential pilgrimages for any visitor to Granada is a trip to the Alhambra. At the Alhambra, Moorish culture is alive and well and there is even an ancient spirit that dwells within the halls of this historic monument. 7. Huesca Located in the Aragon region in the northeast of Spain, Huesca is the ideal destination for travelers who are keen on skiing, participating in adventure tourism, or soaking up the natural beauty of Spain. All of these activities and more are made possible by Huesca’s main attraction: the breathtaking mountainous area of Pyrenean, which is home to several resorts like Formigal and Candanchú, which come alive during the winter season as avid skiers flock to the city to challenge the slopes. Huesca is also home to exciting UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park and a portion of the Way of Saint James pilgrim’s route. From hiking through the national parks to exploring the historic quarters of Huesca, there is no shortage of activities to keep visitors completely immersed in their surroundings. Whether you’re taking on your next big adventure sport, exploring Romanesque art, or setting off to discover

architectural and historic treasures, Huesca is bound to make a memorable vacation destination. 8.Jerez de la Frontera Jerez is, without a doubt, the ultimate destination for travelers desperate for a taste of Andalucía, old and new. The cradle of Spanish flamenco, Jerez’ streets come alive with the lively beat of flamenco music and the mesmerizing performances of quick-stepped dancers. Jerez is also the capital of the Andalusian horse culture and home to pure Spanish horse breeds from the Iberian Peninsula. Jerez is also a place of indulgence as it is home to some of the world’s most acclaimed sherries. Sherry production houses called “bodegas” are all over the city and produce some of the finest sherry in the world and offer fun yet informative tours. A symbol of aristocratic pride, the sherry culture is matched by the chic, modern, and fashionable side of Jerez and its stylish population. 9.Logrono Rich in tradition and history, Logroño is one of Spain’s oldest cities and offers some of its best preserved historical architecture dating back to the Middle Ages. Its deep-rooted heritage is largely tied to the Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago de Compostela, as Logroño became an important stop along the route as well as a cultural crossroads. There are dozens of historic squares that can be visited in Logroño that are home to significant sites like the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Redonda, the Church of Santiago, and the Pilgrim’s Shelter.Apart from its historic attractions, Logroño is also quickly gaining traction as a culinary destination in Spain. The area is synonymous with fantastic Spanish wines and the rich soil and farming history of the area allow chefs to whip up local specialties like marzipan or almond pastries. Truly, a trip to Logroño is like taking a pilgrimage for the soul and the tummy.

MARCH FIESTAS IN SPAIN Every Month There is a Party!

T

he Fallas of Valencia are visually one of the most spectacular Fiestas you will come across in Spain. In mid-March, Valencia lights up its streets for an entire week of celebration and parties. With work officially suspended, the city inhabitants make giant paper mache figures representing notable people as well traditional figures. These are then displayed in the city during the entire week of celebration before being burned down one of the most amazing bonfires that bring the Las Fallas festival to en enigmatic end. The Las Fallas festival was intended to honour Saint Joseph the patron of the carpenters guild, where this spectacular tradition arose from. It is an impressive display of huge figures, mostly comical depicting personalities in Spain which are made over the year only to be burnt on the last day of the fiesta. The week leading up to the Fallas comes alive with fireworks

displays , street performances, performance by local bands and so much more. There are now well over 100.000 Falleros and Falleraswhom ensure that these fiestas are an unforgettable experience each year in Valencia. Jerez Flamenco Festival The ‘golden triangle’ or the ‘Holy Trinity’ of Flamenco music – the heart and soul of this traditional style – is said to be an area contained within the cities of Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera and the barrio of Triana in Seville. This is the home of flamenco. Jerez itself – with its large Gypsy quarter and Moorish castle – is at the very heart of this unique art form, with its beguiling amalgam of cantes (songs), bailes (dances) and guitarra (guitar). You can discover flamenco at its best every day of the year in Jerez in the plentiful Peñas or clubs to be found dotted around the city as well as in the more commercialised venues for the tourist-orientated tablaos. At the beginning of March each year,

though, the whole town allows itself to be completely taken over, with the International Flamenco Festival. It is at this time of the year that the very best Flamenco artists from around the world make their way ‘home’ to give a variety of concerts, workshops, master classes or simply impromptu performances in hidden away atmospheric bars. Ostensibly, the central venue for the Jerez International Flamenco Festival is the impressive Villamarta Theatre and, indeed, this is where the main ‘headline’ shows will be found. However, there are other important sites – the Plaza Romero Martinez, the Palacio de Villavicencio and the Bodega Los Apostoles, for example – where significant concerts occur. But it is the bars of places such as those in the Santiago quarter where the authentic, raw flamenco will stand out. The Jerez Festival is equally as important because of its flamenco

courses as for the quality of its public performances. Classes are available for everyone from beginners through to experts in all of the various styles of singing and dancing. In recent years around 40% of all the available places have been taken after the first day of registration for these courses with students coming from more than 30 different countries. Additionally, there are also many excellent exhibitions, displays and similar cultural events organised throughout the city – notably at the Andalusian Flamenco Centre, in the Palacio de Penmartín. There are many reasons for wanting to spend time in Jerez. It is a town that has a centre small enough to be able to comfortably see on foot, with some impressive architecture, some fascinating sherry bodegas offering enticing visitor tours and, of course, its incomparable equestrian heritage. It is, though, as the city that, since the beginning of the twentieth century, has produced the most –

and the best – flamenco singers, dancers and musicians in the whole of Andalucía, that Jerez prides itself so much. And, during those two weeks in February and March devoted to the International Flamenco Festival, the whole city echoes to the captivating clack of castanets; the intense emotions of the cantos and the spontaneity and audience participation of the jaleo – the handclapping, foot stamping and often discordant shouting that adds to that unique Flamenco atmosphere. The Burrial of the Sardine The Sardine procession, celebrated in Spain is a centuries-old tradition that marks the end of the Spanish carnival season, welcoming the beginning of Lent. Celebrated on Ash Wednesday, the Burial of the Sardine – the procession's official title – involves "mourners" who carry a mock sardine through the streets. The fish represents the excesses of the festival and once buried, these excesses are

considered destroyed. The funeral parade is held through the heart of the old Castizo in Madrid, with the participants enjoying the wines and tapas of local taverns of which they pass, before reaching the burial ground where they light torches and bury the sardine. The tradition began in Madrid in the 18th century, around the time of the reign of Spanish King Carlos III, although it was made famous by Francisco de Goya's painting El Entierro de la Sardina. His painting depicts masked revellers dancing their way to the banks of Mazanares, where the ceremonial sardine is buried. Although the oil painting's exact date is unknown, it is usually said to have been completed during the 1810s. The ceremony, which now signifies the end of Carnival, has become a beloved tradition and still takes place in Madrid. and in other cities throughout Spain.

THE MUNCH BUNCH Meet at various places on the third Friday at 1pm. All venues are in and around the area suggested by the members. They have been to places from Benajarafe to Torrox and up to Canillias Albaida! PETANCA Torre lighthouse which is every Monday at 3pm.

So to sum up: Mainly the venues are along the coast, from Torrox to Benajarafe, accessible by car. If you use public transport, there are buses along the coast road. Members live all over the Axarquia region, not just on the coast and I

For venues that are not stated above usually a telephone call or an email to the Group Leader will clarify. Do come and see for yourself, you don’t need to join until you have attended a couple of meetings. You may be surprised to find that you know a few people by sight from your area. The membership is very large. (By the way, as from 21st of January the bus to Velez Malaga has been cancelled by Loymer bus, but the Malaga bus still stops at the Hospital and El Ingenio, don’t forget to press the bell!)

VISIT THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN SPAIN Fine Dining in Spain

W

ith seven restaurants topping the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, Spain's gastronomic landscape is on the cutting edge of fine dining.

In cities like San Sebastián, Barcelona, and Seville, food isn't just an art, it's a culture. Thanks to the towering influence of the great Catalan chef Ferran Adria, Spain is home to some of the most genius culinary minds in the world, not to mention pitchperfect service and dining experiences that verge on theater. Asador Etxebarri (Atxondo) Asador Etxebarri is a fine dining exploration of all things smoke and fire. Chef Victor Arguinzoniz has based his entire restaurant (and his entire life) around the grill. Every dish that comes out of this country restaurant (No. 13 in the world) has a hint of smoke, and Arguinzoniz is known to locals as "the Ferran Adrià of the hearth." He's famous for his homemade chorizo, which he often prepares

as tartare. Arzak (San Sebastián) With three Michelin stars, Arzak is ranked No. 17 on the 2015 World's Best 50 Restaurants list. Operated by father-daughter duo Juan Mari Arzak and Elena Arzak Espina, the kitchen turns out modern Basque dishes like its famous "Red Egg," made with piquillo peppers and crispy trotter meat. Azurmendi (Larrabetzu) Azurmendi chef Eneko Atxa, who has been cooking professionally since the age of 15, puzzles and delights with dishes like an "inside-out" truffled egg and noodles made of squid. A pioneer of ultrasonic cooking, Atxa is also fervent about sustainability. Not only does the restaurant (No. 19 in the world) use geothermal technology to heat and cool its environs, it also recycles its own waste and harvests rainfall. Quique Dacosta (Dénia) Chef Quique Dacosta prepares a variety of tasting menus (some exceeding 30 dishes) in his threeMichelin-starred restaurant (No.

39 in the world). Look out for the tobacco leaf and toro, a sashimistyle tuna belly presented on smoked, caramelized kelp with micro herbs and onion rings. Café Iruña (Navarra) According to Condé Nast Traveler, Navarra — the region that hosts Pamplona's infamous Running of the Bulls — is emerging as Spain's next great food scene. Ernest Hemingway loved this 19th century cafe, where he began writing "A Farewell to Arms," "A Moveable Feast," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," among others. El Celler de Can Roca (Girona) Operated by three brothers, El Celler de Can Roca took the No. 1 spot on 2015's World's Best Restaurant list. The highly innovative menu counts creations like "king prawn sand" and "ink rocks" among its treasures. The brothers — Joan Roca (head chef), Jordi Roca (pastry chef), and Josep Roca (sommelier) — have also earned three Michelin stars.

THE DROUGHT DEVILS HAVE ARRIVED! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

M

y article last month on drought-resistant plants certainly seemed to stir a lot of you into enquiring about 'dry' plantings so I thought we'd continue with the theme and give you yet more ideas on how to convert your campo wilderness into a sustainable yet beautiful garden. We've taken special note of what you want, we've acted on it, and we now have an area at Viveros Florena which is entirely dedicated to those Drought Devils – just look for the signs - to make it even easier for you to select suitable plants. Stock comes and goes, of course, so ask us for advice; we'll happily give you more information on size, flower season and colour. We like to keep a very wide range of plants so that you can almost always get what you want but, don´t forget, if you want a lot of the same type just let us know and we will order in for you. plants that will laugh at the summer season! Many of you will know teucrium frutescens, bush germander with its lovely greysheened leaves and denim-blue flowers but do you know about the much rarer teucrium ackermannii? This denselypacked silver-green low shrublet has a lovely low spreading habit to around 15cm high and 50cm across. It has rosy purple scented flowers which are extremely attractive to bees and butterflies. Epilobium canum Western Hills is a particularly free-flowering form of the Californian fuchsia. This is a fuchsia with a difference, far from the green plants with dangling bells that we know best. This one forms wiry bushy plants with tiny silver-white felted leaves and brilliant scarlet tubular flowers. It thrives in sunshine and very dry conditions. To around 50cm x 50cm. Leucophyta (syn. calocephalus) Silver Cushion looks just like it sounds, forming silvery cushiony

mounds in dry sunny conditions. A native of southern Australia, it looks very much like a silvered tumbleweed ready to blow around in the wind! It does very well in salty air and dry, poor soil. It's a spectacular contrast plant, reaching about 1m x 1m, and has small yellow flowers, though it is the foliage that attracts. Galvezia speciosa is commonly known as island snapdragon and it's unusually showy for a drought devil! With bright green rather fleshy looking foliage and lipstickred flowers like snapdragons it doesn´t convince, but this one is a native of dry areas in California where it grows in stony scree and rocky canyons, though it is probably better in dry semi-shade than full sun. The arching stems to a metre or so become weighed down with the mass of the flowers. If you're looking for some height and deep colour to contrast with all the silver leaves, dodonea viscosa purpurea, or purple hop

It's one of my favourite backdrop plants, a great windbreak plant and definitely under-used. It'll do 3 to 4m or more in height with a couple of metres spread and is ideal for hedging too. This is another one that will stand up to tough coastal conditions.

ELECTION TIME There will be local, European and several regional elections all on the same day in five months time, May 26. There will be no super Sunday as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Friday announced a snap general election for April 28. It will be the third general election In Spain in four years. Spaniards were not due to be called to the polls again until 2020. Citizens of the EU, nonSpaniards, resident in Spain will be able to vote in the municipal elections and in the European Parliament elections of 26 May 2019 if they have been previously registered in the electoral census and are of legal age on polling day.In order to be registered in the electoral census, it is required to be previously registered in the Municipal Register and to have expressed the intention to exercise the right to vote in Spain. Although the United Kingdom has expressed its intention to leave the European Union on 30 March 2019, according to the agreement of the Central Electoral Commission of 3 October 2018, citizens of the United Kingdom resident in Spain should not be excluded from the formation of the electoral roll for municipal and European Parliament elections, advising those concerned that it is a precautionary measure that will

cease to have effect if the separation of the United Kingdom is completed on 30 March 2019.

NERJA RESIDENTS DAY Be on the lookout for the Costa Animal Society (CAS) at the Nerja Residents Day on Sunday March 8 at the Plaza de España just behind the town hall. We will have a stand with information about all of our efforts and a roster of cats and dogs ready for adoption or looking for foster care. There will also be a tombola with a plethora of tantalizing prizes. Please stop by to say hello. We may bark but we do not bite! Residents Day is always a fun day out for the entire family with a full day of entertainment organised by the town hall. Visit the numerous stalls and food venues put on by local clubs, charities and small businesses and sample the culture and cuisine from the diverse legions of foreign residents who live in Nerja. The event runs from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ Mark at the Punta Lara Bar and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) are pleased to announce their next charitable fund raising quiz to be held on March 22 at 7.30pm. for a fun evening. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced bookingis recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673. CAS SHOP NEWS What better way to help the Costa Animal Society (CAS) than to help yourself. Why not do a spring cleaning and thin out those heaving wardrobes. From linen to accessories, books to DVDs, bricá-brac, electrics and small pieces of furniture, all items are welcome. JOAN HUNT 90th BIRTHDAY On January, the Cudeca Hospice celebrated the 90th birthday of its Founder and Honorary President, Joan Hunt, surrounded by the CUDECA employees and her closest friends. The birthday party took place in the training room of the hospice, which had been decorated with banners and handmade birthday decorations in the room, in addition to being responsible for the layout of the entire menu cooked by the workers themselves. Joan Hunt arrived at 14.00h where she was received with a great ovation among applauses and smiles by all those present, including her closest friends as well as personalities and employees. To their surprise, Blame it on the boogie by the Jackson´s Five was played and all employees lined up in their positions to perform a dance they had been rehearsing for more than three weeks without their founder knowing anything. They were all spread around the room and started to do their moves perfectly choreographed and enjoyed being able to give that special dance gift to Joan Hunt. The atmosphere was more and more relaxed and the expressions of surprise and joy of the founder served as a very high reward for everyone.
