a Rosaleda has been announced as the venue for the 38th Copa de la Reina football final. The final for the tournament, currently in the last 16 phase, will take place on Sunday 31 May. It will be the first time the stadium has hosted a women's game. This is the latest event added to the sporting calendar for Malaga, one of the European capitals of sport. The hope is that the 30,000 capacity ground will be at least 90 per cent full on the day.
A NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update
A
woman whose husband and two children drowned in a swimming pool in Costa del Sol in Spain has called for the pool to be examined in further tests through her lawyer. Olubunmi Diya’s 9-year-old daughter Comfort is thought to have been struggling at the centre of the swimming pool in at Fuengirola’s Club La Costa World hotel on Christmas Eve when her son Praise-Emmanuel, 16, and husband Gabriel Diya, 52, leapt in to rescue her. The three family members fell unconscious in the water and first aiders from the resort and emergency service members were not able to resuscitate them. Ms Diya’s lawyer, Javier Toro, has said the family is “not satisfied with the interpretation of it being a simple accident”. ”It’s very rare for three people to die in the centre of a swimming pool – especially in the case of a tall, hefty man,” he told the BBC. “Something must have happened apart from a simple error or simple accident.”

who had to travel to Switzerland to end his life, Spain’s lower house of parliament began considering a bill to regulate euthanasia. Introduced by the Socialist Party (PSOE), this is the first piece of legislation to reach the floor of the Congress of Deputies since the new government was sworn in last month. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of the PSOE, heads a center-left coalition that also includes Unidas Podemos. Support has been clear and consistent for more than a decade. With 201 votes in favour, 140 against – from the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox – and two abstentions, Congress agreed to consider the initiative, which will now enter a period of amendments and go to the congressional Health Committee for negotiations. This is the third time that the text has been taken into consideration by the Spanish parliament, but Health Minister Salvador Illa expressed confidence that it could secure final passage by June.
date has been set in court, 19 February, for settlement proceedings between Malaga CF and sacked coach Víctor Sánchez del Amo. Víctor is demanding 600,000 euros for nonmaterial damages suffered as a result of his sacking after an explicit video of him was leaked in a case of extortion. Six people have now been arrested over the spreading of the video.

lmost 400 years after storms sent one of Spain’s greatest treasure galleons to the bottom of the sea off Mexico, archaeologists from the two countries are to renew their search for the ship and its precious cargo of gold, silver and jewels. Even before the tempests hit, the omens for the Nuestra Señora del Juncal’s return voyage in October 1631 were decidedly ill. A day before the fleet of which it was a part set sail from Mexico, its commander died. The ships pressed on even though the Juncal was in a poor state of repair and taking on water. After weathering a fortnight’s storms, cutting the main mast and tossing cannons and other heavy objects overboard in a desperate attempt to lighten the ship, the crew could do no more. Of the 300 people onboard, 39 survived by climbing into a small launch. In May, underwater archaeologists from Spain and Mexico will begin a 10day search for the Juncal. It is hoped that the work will be just the beginning of a two-decade-long scientific and cultural collaboration.

Real Madrid and Barcelona has dominated Spanish club football. Between the first season in 1929 to season 2016-2019 they won together 60 of the 89 possible trophies. Between the first season and season 2019-2020, in total 62 clubs have participated in the top division of the Spanish league. Audience Capacity of La Liga stadiums Camp Nou, where Barcelona have played since 1957 it has the highest capacity with almost 100,000 seats. The average capacity in the league is 36,104.
SPANISH FOOTBALL All You Need To Know Spanish La Liga La Liga (Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División) is the name of the Spanish football league and has existed since 1929. The top division is called Primera División (which is commonly referred to as La Liga) and the second is called Segunda División. Since 1997 there has been 20 clubs participating in the top league of La Liga. History The first football league in Spain was The Catalan football championship (Campionat de Catalunya), established in 1901. After the creation of the La Liga, The Catalan football championship co-existed with the national league for some years until it was cancelled in 1940. La Liga was the first national football league in Spain and was founded in 1929 (the first season started in February that year and ended in June). At that time, it consisted of one division, Primera División, and contained ten clubs.
14 The Grapevine
The numbers of clubs later expand on several occasions. In 1987, it reached 20 clubs and that has remained except for a short period (1995-1997) with 22 clubs. League system The first and second division was founded together in 1929. In 1977, Segunda División B, was founded to replace Tercera División as the third tier. Tercera División has since then been the fourth tier. Qualification for European Cups Nowadays, the top four teams in La Liga are qualified for the Champions League and the team that is placed fifth will get the chance to play in Europa League (one place also goes to the winner of the Copa del Rey). Relegations Nowadays, the three teams placed at the bottom of the table (places 18-20) are relegated to Segunda División.
Players Top goalscorers The league's all-time leading goalscorer is Lionel Messi who has (in October 2019) made 424 goals in Barcelona. Messi is also the only player to score 50 times during one season (it should be noticed that the numbers of games per season has shifted over times; as a comparison Telmo Zarra scored 38 times in the 1950-51 season when each team only played 30 games). In the second place among goalscorers is Cristiano Ronaldo who made 311 goals in Real Madrid in 292 appearances (a goal ratio record in the league). Other notable goalscorers in the league are Hugo Sánches (234 goals for Real Madrid 1981-1994), Raúl (228 goals for Real Madrid 1994-2010), and Alfredo Di Stéfano (227 goals for Real Madrid 1953-1966). Players with most appearances The player with most appearances is the national team goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. He played most of his matches in FC Barcelona and in total he made 622 La Liga appearances. Next to him is the Real Madrid player Raúl with 550 matches.

A declaration must be submitted individually by each owner, regardless of how many owners there are, or the percentage of participation held by each owner, (this is specified later). For example, if you own half of a property valued at 50,000€, although your 25,000€ share is below the threshold, both owners are still required to submit an individual declaration based on the total value of the property.

ll tax residents in Spain, (i.e. Those people living in Spain for more than 183 days a year or those whose main business interest is in Spain), should be aware that as a consequence of legislation approved in 2012 for the prevention and control of fraud, that if they have any assets outside of Spain valued at 50,000€ or more, they are required to submit a 720 Tax Form to the Spanish authorities. This form was created by the Spanish Authorities in order to control assets or funds that people have outside of Spain. It is obligatory to submit this form when the total value of assets outside of Spain is 50,000€ or more in EACH OR ANY ONE of the above categories; e.g. if we have 2 properties valued at 30,000€ although the value individually would be below the This declaration can be made threshold, the total value of both online, through the Tax Office`s would be 60,000€, thus webpage where the Modelo 720 exceeding the specified limit in (Statement of Assets Outside that category, and therefore Spain) can be located and subject to this new 720 Tax completed. Although this declaration of assets and rights abroad is solely informative and NO TAX is charged, failure to file, late filing or false information could result in serious consequences. For this reason, we recommend that residents in Spain fulfill their obligation to declare their assets outside of Spain, to avoid the imposition of fines from a minimum of € 10,000 to a maximum of 150% of the value of those undeclared assets located outside of Spain. Once you have made your first declaration it is not necessary to present any further declarations in subsequent years, unless any of your assets in any category increases or decreases by more than 20,000€ above the initial value declared. Please do not hesitate to contact us so we can guide you through this process. We will inform you exactly what the requirements for the completion and submission of the 720 Tax Form are. dramatically compared to how it was done back in the 1940s. Developments in technology mean that very little housework is now carried out without a cleaning gadget or piece of technology, compared to when everything was done by hand with materials that could be found around the home,” says Charlotte Farrow, product manager at leading UK homecare brand, Minky.
SPRING CLEANING Is It A Thing Of The Past?
T
hese days, the annual spring clean is a tradition that, like many others, is on the wane – which actually sort of makes sense when you consider the origins of the domestic spring time blitz. Spring cleaning has roots across a number of cultures. In the UK, the practice largely evolved as a means of refreshing rooms after a long, stuffy winter. Wipe away winter “Spring cleaning comes from the days when homes were heated by fireplaces, and efforts were made to prevent heat from escaping. The coming of spring and warm weather was an opportunity to air the house and clean it of soot and all the grime accumulated over the winter months,” explains Yvonne Manomano, cleaning operations manager at DIY and cleaning services company Handy. “Now, many of us still enjoy the opportunity provided by spring to let in fresh air, clean our windows and wash the floor under the refrigerator – as well as other difficult-to-reach places. Another reason for cleaning taking place in spring is that warmer weather and longer days work as a

stimulant for a lot of people to become more active.” Habits have changed As our homes and lifestyles have changed, so too have our cleaning habits. With central heating now more the norm, and the fact many of us spend more time outside the home, we don’t spend winters hibernating in quite the same way, our homes accumulating months of dust, soot and stale air. So, the need for the big spring clean may not feel so great. A survey last year revealed that 85% of Brits think the tradition could soon be a thing of the past. Less than half of the 2,000 adults quizzed said they still do a yearly spring clean, while 37% said they do it every few years, and one-infive confessed they never bother. That’s not to say we’ve become a nation of dirty slobs. Of course, it is now far more usual for people to hire cleaners, plus most people now use more of a clean-as-yougo approach, just focussing on regular speedy cleaning sessions.
“In the 1940s it was much more common to adopt a regular cleaning schedule, dedicating a specific day to different chores. For example, Mondays were spent washing clothes, and there’d be separate days for ironing, baking, haberdashery and other tasks. “Our busy lifestyles mean that it’s now much more common for people to devote one day a week, or an hour each day, to carry out general cleaning tasks.” Spring to it The tradition hasn’t disappeared just yet, however, and there are still plenty of advocates for the annual deep domestic de-grime. “After a cold winter, a thorough spring clean can give the home a total refresh,” notes Farrow - and this could be beneficial both on practical and psychological terms, reviving spirits as well as rooms after a long, gloomy winter. While a good spring clean doesn’t let us off the hook with household chores the rest of the year, it is also a good chance to do those jobs that we simply don’t need – or have time – to do regularly, like washing curtains and clearing out dust and dirt from rarely accessed nooks and crannies.
Daily priorities “The way we carry out our spring cleaning has changed

HISTORY & ORIGINS OF PAELLA One of Spains Most Popular Dishes
P
aella is one of the most popular and famous of global dishes, to define exactly what paella contains is almost impossible. There are as many variations of paella as there are cooks, with many claiming that their recipe is the best tasting or most authentic. The origins of the dish, however, are quite humble. Understanding a little of its history will help explain why so many varieties exist.
22 The Grapevine
Valencia in Eastern Spain is the undisputed home of paella. It is one of the largest natural ports in the Mediterranean and has been one of the most important riceproducing areas in Spain since rice was introduced by the Moors over 1200 years ago. In fact, the Spanish word for rice is ‘arroz’, which is derived from Arabic, not Latin like most of Castilian Spanish. Humble Beginnings Paella was originally farmers' and
farm labourers' food, cooked by the workers over a wood fire for the lunchtime meal. It was made with rice, plus whatever was to hand around the rice fields and countryside: tomatoes, onions and snails, with a few beans added for flavour and texture. Rabbit or duck might also have been added, and for special occasions, chicken plus a touch of saffron for an extra special colour and flavour. Paella was also traditionally eaten straight from the pan in which it was

cooked with each person using his own wooden spoon.
they have their own language somewhat similar to Catalan) and probably has its roots in the Latin 'patella' meaning pan.
Little by little, as 'Valencian rice' became more widely available, paella recipes were adapted with new variations appearing. With Valencia being on the coast, it is no surprise that various types of seafood crept into the recipes over the generations. Now paella is the generic name of 200 or so distinctive rice dishes or ‘arroces’ from the Valencia region let alone other parts of Spain and the rest of the world. To this day a "true" Paella Valenciana has no seafood but a mixture of chicken, rabbit and snails with green and white beans.
There are however, some other wonderful (if less likely) theories about the origins of the name. The most romantic of them suggests that the dish was first prepared by a lover for his fiancée and that the word is a corruption of ‘para ella’ (meaning ‘for her’ in Spanish). Like all myths there is a small grain of truth in this and although many women still traditionally do the cooking in Spain, making paella is usually left to the men - very much like BBQ’s in the UK!!!
‘Paella’ – where did the name come from ? It’s a little confusing but ’paella’ or to be more exact ‘la paella’ is the name for cooking pan itself and not the dish. The word comes from old Valencian (in Valencia
It has also been suggested that the word ‘paella’, is derived from the Arabic word "Baqiyah", which means ‘leftovers’ - once again emphasizing both the dish's humble and arabic beginnings. Paella – the most sociable of all
In Spain paella is still unique. Not only do families congregate on mass to eat paella in restaurants, but it is often cooked at weekends at holiday homes in ‘bodegas’ or ‘txokos’ (large dining areas where families gather) or at beach or mountain picnic sites. There are many paella competitions all over Spain and very often a giant paella is the centrepiece for many fiestas. It’s easy to see why - paella can create a party, a ceremony and a debate (often over the making of the paella itself!!) - making it one of the most sociable and enjoyable of all culinary occasions.

ANDALUCIA VASTGOED 15 Years In Spain
T
his month I spoke with AndalucĂa Vastgoed/ Real Estate as they come up to their 15year anniversary. The team consists of Patricia and Geert the owners of the business and Arne and Daphne who they have taken on more recently. They are based in Frigiliana but cover all of AxarquĂa giving options of coastal and rural living for their buyers. Their business model works perfectly as Patricia and the team find clients a property to buy and then they ask Geert renovate the property to make it their dream home. Last year was their most productive year with regard to renovations of their client's properties. Geert projects manages the work involving both an Architect and a Constructor from Velez Malaga. They are able to renovate properties within the original footprint with ease and in a few cases, they have remodelled total houses without the clients being in Spain. One particular customer bought a house through them in Sayalonga, gave Geert the keys and said remodel it and we will
26 The Grapevine
see it again when it is finished! They didn't choose anything before they left Spain and all communication and decisions were made by email. When the clients returned, they walked through the door and cried with pleasure and happiness. Geert and Patricia took the stress away from them and created the customers vision of their home in Spain. Often clients will view properties initially with Arne or Daphne. Then on the second viewing Geert and Patricia, who is architect, will go back to the client's favourite properties and discuss what can be done to make their dream home in the sun happen and give on the spot quotations and ideas. Often clients like a location of a house but not the property itself. Patricia and Geert can see the potential in a house and provide options and possibilities. Patricia talked about the type of buyers they have and what type of properties they are looking for. In recent months the younger buyer is looking for a B & B type property and the older retired generation have much bigger budgets than before looking for a
permanent residence. Although she admitted there are clients of all ages looking for all types of different properties. Geert and Patricia have established a good and honest reputation in the Estate Agency Business and as such they have many referrals and repeat business. Last year they also achieved an Audience Award of best International Broker. Property Investors are keen to work with Patricia and Geert as they can buy a property and then leave them with a budget for restoration, reform or a makeover and then put the property back on the market in order to make a profit. This partnership works both very well for AndalucĂa Real Estate and the investor themselves. It was a pleasure to meet up with Patricia again and with their approach and personality Andalucia Real Estate looks forward too many more successful years. https://www.andaluciavastgoed.com/en/

AXARFUSION
Celebrating Two Years In And Around The Competa Area
T
his month I met Dani Hill the CEO and owner of Axarfusión. In the next few months the business will be celebrating 2-years working in and around the Competa area. Dani wanted to update everyone on how things have gone and what they plan to accomplish for the coming year. Axarfusión is your local Internet, TV, Mobile and Landline phone provider for Cómpeta; the surrounding villages and countryside. They are the first company to install Fibre optics into Cómpeta village and have expanded their high-speed WIFI network out to the surrounding countryside and villages. After almost two years in business Dani firstly wants to thank all of his customers for the trust and support that they have shown for him and his company. For Dani the most important part of running a local business is to maintain a close relationship with his customers and offer a personal service that is provided to each any every customer when needed. Something that can be hard to find with larger more impersonal companies. What is Axarfusión's main priority for the coming few years? “Aside from continuing to provide a high quality and uninterrupted service, I believe that our greatest
34 The Grapevine
priority is to maintain and improve our customer services and offer better communication with all of our clients” Dani then went on to explain that after seeing local internet providers being bought out by national companies, he fears that these companies customer services may decline. For Axarfusion it is important to emphasize that we are improving further our communication and closeness to our customers. With this in mind we have activated a WhatsApp number for customers to contact our team during office hours, we have updated out telephone system and made sure an engineer is always available via email to help clients if they were to experience a problem with our service. Axarfusion has also recently launched some new services. From only 3€ extra per month and in combination with our internet package, we have a new TV service with over 120 channels. Many channels from different EU countries. Also we now offer a landline “telephone only” service for customers who love to talk but don't need internet services. Dani also informed me about their new mobile phone packages with unlimited calls in Spain and data packages starting from 8Gb for only 9,95€ a month, one of the best phone and data packages on the market.
I asked Dani what plans he has for the coming year and he was enthusiastic about his plans for expanding his Fibre Optic network. He is hoping to be able to include 3 or 4 new local villages into the network. Once the new villages are connected any clients presently using the WIFI network who can be moved over to the faster and more reliable fibre optic system will be connected FREE OF CHARGE. Other plans to increase internet speeds for countryside WIFI users are in process. With the replacement of customers antennas already started. This is of course at NO EXTRA COST to the customer. Dani concluded our interview with an invitation to anyone who is thinking about changing to a new internet provider to consider using Axarfusión. Don't be dissatisfied with the service you are presently receiving, you can move over to Axarfusión FREE OF CHARGE. There is no charge for all internet installations! Dani said “I am 100% sure that you won't regret changing to Axarfusión”! With this super offer we concluded our interview. Axarfusión is a fast growing, highly proactive company with a great record for customer service and reliable internet, TV and telephone services.

Every fortnight we play at home and there is a lovely atmosphere with locals of all ages coming up to the football pitch to support the club! Food is quite often served at the kiosk and hot and cold drinks are always available. The club asks for a 2€ donation as an entrance fee, however that includes a soft drink or beer for you to enjoy whilst watching the matches! This spring Competa FC has decided to organize a fantastic fun day at the Hotel Balcón de Cómpeta on 29th March! There will be live music, flamenco dancing, Zumba, Paella, and a myriad of crazy games for all the family!
The kids have asked if we can put the coaches in the stocks and make them pay for all those laps of the pitch that they've had to do….and who are we to say no!?! Penalty shoot-outs, face-painting, a tombola and some big prizes on the raffle are just a few more reasons to come and join us! Together we can make Cómpeta FC great and add yet another thing to the list of reasons that we all love living here so much! Look out for more information on Facebook and Instagram about matches at home and events that we have organized so that you can come and join the fun!

describe as modern day Athletic Bilbao. It was a mostly uneventful affair. The two teams continued to meet in the early parts of the century – mostly in friendlies – up until the introduction of La Liga in 1928 pushed to the two against each other with increased frequency. The two competed at the top of the newly formed Spanish premier division for many seasons. Being the two biggest, wealthiest clubs in the nation (again, modern-day Bilbao was competing with them regularly at this point as well), a small rivalry did develop. But, it needed something more to become even worth a mention. That would come in the following years.
EL CLÁSICO El Clásico, Bernabéu, kick-off confirmed for 1 March 2020
T
he story behind El Clásico – one of the world’s most famous rivalries – runs so much deeper than just a few lads having a kick-about in front of stadiums full of avid supporters. This rivalry traces its roots back to the earliest parts of the 1900s, and over 100 years later the fire lives on both in those who still claim living memory of this matchup’s foundational beef and those who witnessed the more modern altercations between Spain’s – and the world’s – two biggest clubs; Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona. Every match between Real and Barca goes down as another edition of El Clásico – of which there have been over 240 competitive meetings. In the modern game, the clash typically attracts around 100 million viewers per edition, with viewers tuning in worldwide to watch another culmination of decades of competition.
40 The Grapevine
Obviously, with the size of these two clubs and the economic and cultural influence of their respective cities, it’s no surprise they grew to be the top brass in their country (historically alongside Athletic Bilbao). With similar teams chasing titles and trophies every season, rivalry naturally ensued. It wasn’t until external factors began to play a role that the vitriol between Barca and Real truly escalated. Lets explain… The First Match in the History of El Clásico The action kicked off on May 13, 1902 when the two clubs met for the first time in a one-off cup-style competition held as part of the coronation of Spanish King Alfonso XIII. Barcelona and Real Madrid met in the semifinals of the Concurso Madrid or Copa de la Coronacion, with Barca taking a 3-1 victory over Madrid before falling in the final to a Basque team who you might
El Clásico Plants its Roots The passion behind El Clásico has its roots outside of soccer. It is in the political and cultural affairs of Spain in the mid-20th century that the derby truly established itself with the fire and emotion befitting of being one of the greatest in all-time sports. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the political climate that would surround it in the years before and after, supporting a football club became more than watching a match and wearing a jersey. It became a way to express one’s ideas and beliefs about the world – to do so alongside a group of likeminded people, rallying behind the colours and crests of an organization you believed in. Thus, supporting Real Madrid or Barcelona wasn’t just supporting a soccer team. It was identifying with a full-fledged political and cultural movement. What it meant to people of the time extended itself beyond a 90 minute fixture between white lines and goal posts.

What follows may be a touch guilty of boiling down the complexities of a massive war of cultures and ideas, but for the purposes of this article, we’ll stay focussed and say that Barca and Real came to essentially represent the two sides of the Spanish Civil War and the country’s political spectrum as a whole. Barcelona, the capital of the northeastern region of Spain known as Catalonia, took up a side with the Spanish Republic, a leftleaning political organization supporting an elected government in opposition to… The city of Madrid, who came to be associated with the Nationalist movement – a unified Spain under one Spanish flag and right-wing ideals. Barcelona supporters express procatalan political ideals at the Camp Nou Madrid supporters often wave the national flag of Spain at matches to show support Political stances continue to play a role in modern day El Clásicos. Catalan flags are a common sight at the Camp Nou, while Spanish national flags are frequently flown at the Santiago Bernabéu Barcelona – the football club – had come to represent not just a soccer and sporting organization, but a symbol of Catalan identity, opposing the centralizing tendencies of Madrid. As Spanish centralized dictatorships (Under Miguel Primo de Rivera and later Francisco Franco) looked to consolidate Spain, regional cultures, languages and beliefs became increasingly frownedupon, censored and suppressed. Another way of phrasing it; Catalan identity and ideology became increasingly censored and suppressed. Throughout the decades leading up to and following the Spanish Civil War, both clubs and their presidents suffered at the hands of Nationalist regimes at one time or another. Despite this, the clubs’ ideologies became emblematic of opposing

sides of the political spectrum, and the foundation for a fierce… disagreement, we’ll call it, was born.
these being media lies, Barcelona supporters were banned from travelling to the second leg – away in Madrid.
El Clásico Becomes a Proper Rivalry Understanding the world views that each of Spain’s top soccer clubs came to be associated with is paramount to shedding further light on the actual incidents when sparks flew and true sporting rivalry and hatred was developed. With that (albeit brief) understanding under your belt, let’s get into the nitty-gritty.
When the match kicked off, Barcelona players were heavily jeered, with objects being hurled at them throughout the match thanks to the rise in tension during the week. There are suggestions by some that Barcelona were threatened on numerous occasions by high ranking military officials to lose the match. These circumstances resulted in minimal effort from the players on the pitch. Whether out of anger, fear or dismay for the state of affairs, a very competent Barcelona soccer team who had won the first leg 3-0 fell by a jaw-dropping score line of 11-1.
Before the following incidents, these clubs were only “rivals” because they came from the biggest cities in Spain and had differing ideas of how the world works. That’s about it. Then came the 1943 Copa del Generalísimo. Copa del Generalísimo Barcelona and Real Madrid met in the semifinals of the Copa del Generalísimo – what you might know as the modern-day Copa del Rey. It would end up being a landmark moment for the two sides. Because each team was understood as an extension of the sides and the differences that led to the Spanish Civil War, dictator Francisco Franco found it of monumental importance that Real Madrid won the tie to further consolidate his victory and authority – demonstrating the power and validity of his dictatorship and a centralized, nationalist Spain. Here’s a run-down of events: Barcelona win the first leg handily, 3-0. Madrid players and staff spend the following week complaining about Barcelona’s players, the state of the pitch and jeers and whistling from the home side’s support. Spanish media – likely under direction from Franco – join the conversation, casting Barcelona as enemies, cheats and roughhousers in their writing in the lead up to the second leg of the semifinal. Despite accusations of
Spanish Newspaper Marca reports on a historic El Clasico match that fanned the flames of a true rivalry. Spanish media outlet Marca uses their front page to report on the "extraordinary" match Madrid supporters do not revel in this victory to this day. Both clubs were fined by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the match is remembered as a disturbing culmination of political turmoil, not a proper football match. El Clásico: Messi vs Ronaldo As fate would have it, two of the greatest players the game has ever seen played for opposing sides of the El Clásico rivalry during their primes. How much can truly be said about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo that hasn’t already been said? While the two never brought any unsightly altercations to the derby, they epitomized the coming together of the world’s two greatest clubs.

KIYA SURVIVORS Fund Raising For Good Cause
S
ome people in Competa may recently have heard about this charity, as one of our local residents, Helen Sanderson, has been holding fundraising events to raise her target of ÂŁ1000 for the charity. Helen recently met Suzy Butler, CEO KIYA Survivor, and was so inspired by her work she volunteered to go to Peru in August 2020 to help the KIYA Survivors service users. Helen will be helping to build walls and bathrooms in the one room houses to improve living standards and work with the young people during their therapy and play sessions. Above all she will show them that they are cared for and loved. Quilla (pronounced Kiya) is the Quechua word for moon, the symbol of new beginning. In 2001, Suzy Butler founded the KIYA Survivors charity for children with learning difficulties, disabilities and in vulnerable situations in Peru. She has successfully directed the charity for over 20 years. Originally it's aim was to support victims of the 'el NiĂąo' phenomenon on the north coast of Peru, where many
46 The Grapevine
of the local population had been left homeless and without support after a series of devastating natural disasters. It quickly extended its support to children and young people who have special needs after Suzy found a young autistic boy on the street, naked and unconscious after a violent attack. The lack of concern and obvious fear that people showed towards the boy due to his 'condition' encouraged Suzy to research what support was on offer to young people with special needs. She was shocked at what she discovered and decided to stay in Peru (for 8 years!) to do something about it. The Rainbow Centre was the first step towards improving services in the Sacred Valley and was opened in January 2002 by Suzy and the Peruvian team she had successfully trained and built up. Since then Kiya Survivors has opened four further centres in the Sacred Valley and north of the country and has become an integrated part of the communities it serves.
local authorities to help instigate change in areas such as appropriate special needs services, support in local schools and workplaces and encouraging the integration of children born to be different so they can thrive in their communities and homes. The charity aims to provide a new beginning for children and young people in the global community who have special needs or have been abused or abandoned. They are helped to gain independence through education and therapy, love and laughter. Currently KIYA is working with approximately 1000 individuals annually in Peru, all affected by poverty and special needs or abuse. Suzy moved to Spain in 2018 and set up a well-being space at her home in Velez de Benaudalla, she was shocked to see so many problems on her doorstep that matched up with the Kiya ethos. She was motivated to launch a Kiya Spain initiative through a new foundation she is currently setting up through her rural home, Casa Sierra.

Suzy has installed a 'well-being' dome, in which, the service users will participate in group therapy, meditation, yoga and brain gym. There is an outdoor space to relax and play games and stables with a paddock for the rescue horses, where equine therapy is offered. There is also a kitchen for cooking workshops.
retreats and activities held at Casa Sierra where the therapy is taking place, go towards running the foundation, which ensures the space is maintained, materials are bought and the best therapy is provided for each individual and of course, therapy animals are cared for.
One of the main areas the foundation will be focusing on is supporting women and children coming to Spain to find refuge. Many of the women, like those Kiya supports in Peru, have been through domestic abuse or suffered assault and are fleeing, often with children in tow. The trauma these women and children have experienced is incomprehensible. Suzy has created a team of Equine Therapist, Clinical Social Worker and Wellbeing Teacher and invaluable volunteers from the local area. They hope to help give some comfort, respite and direction as they adjust to a new world and heal from the past. The foundation will also offer support to young people from local disability schools. All donations taken through the
Therapy Programmes: The foundation has allied with The Red Cross in Motril to offer support to the women and children passing through their refuge centres and, the Luis Pastor Disability School, to support the young people who attend, with weekly equine therapy, yoga and meditation, cooking programmes and more. Equine Therapy: Casa Sierra has partnered with local equine centre, Entre Montanas and the experienced Equine Therapist who runs it. She and Suzy believe that horses hold a power to heal, help us see our true selves and feel connected. Yoga and Meditation: Local yoga and meditation teacher will be teaching ways to calm anxiety, connect to the areas where trauma has been held and release stress.
Brain Gym: Suzy will be running a brain gym programme to assist in concentration, communication and coordination. Cooking: The women from the refuge centre miss cooking! It is so often the space where they talk, laugh and share their stories, so we are hoping to encourage this through cooking sessions where the women will take it in turns to work in small groups and cook lunch for everyone, assisted by our Clinical Social Worker. The programme is looking for sponsors to help them grow the programme and volunteers to help hands on. For more information: info@kiyasurvivors.org Helen is planning future fundraising events; Horse Racing evening at Pampona, Quiz night at Pavo Real, BBQ and Bingo at her house and Murder Mystery evening. Please join in the fun and support this worthy cause. Thank you

THROUGH THEIR VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN: 12 ANDALUCIAN WINES
T
he wines from Spain have an excellent international reputation, which those made in Andalucia increasingly carry more weight, where half a million hectoliters is produced per season. 75% of these Andalucian wines are backed by one of the six Denominations of Origin that exist: Huelva County, JerezXeres-Sherry, Manzanilla de Sanlucar, Malaga, Sierras de Málaga and Montilla-Moriles. The Mediterranean climate and mild average temperatures (around 16ºC) make this land an ideal place for growing grapes and making wines of great fame. A popularity that has increased in recent years with the arrival of international awards, which Andalucian wineries have taken advantage of facing the wine tourism (Guided tours, tastings and shows). Before an extensive supply, what are the best Andalucian wines?
54 The Grapevine
Malaga wine or Sherry wine? Red, white, sweet or dry? Here are a selcetion of wines of Andalucia through their Denominations of Origin. DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN JEREZ-XÉRÈS-SHERRY The Denominations of Origin Jerez-Xérès-Sherry has the oldest regulatory Council of Spain; perhaps they are the most recognized wines worldwide. Its production is spread throughout the province of Cadiz and Seville. They use the Palomino grape Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel to develop Generous Wines (Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso and Palo Cortado), Generous Liquor (Pale Cream, Medium and Cream) and Sweet Natural (Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel). 1. PALO CORTADO TRADICIÓN VORS The winery Tradición is the only one of the D.O. Jerez dedicated
exclusively to older wines, which are classified as V.O.S. (Very Old Sherry, over 20 years old) and V.O.R.S. (Very Old Rare Sherry, over 30 years old). A hearth that the Spanish Association of Wine Writers and Journalists have come to appreciate placing it as the 3rd most voted wines in the Best Wines and Spirits Awards Spain 2014. This Palo Cortado is an exclusive, unique generous aged for more than 32 years, combining the finesse of the Amontillado and the body of the Oloroso, perfect with blue cheeses and foies. 2. LUSTAU VORS 30 YO Lustau is one of the most prestigious wineries worldwide and thus was recognized by the 45th Edition of the International Wine & Spirits Competition, where it received the Sherry Producer Award 2014. A recognition that their wines share, that were awarded by the

Decanter World Wine Awards 2014, where the Lustau VORS 30 YO Amontillado received the gold medal. Its dark amber color, the scent of noble woods, with pronounced saline touches and its immensely long finish make it ideal for combining with cured cheeses and game dishes. DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN MANZANILLA DE SANLÚCAR The aging of this wine is limited to the town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, also in Cadiz, due to its special microclimatic conditions along the Atlantic. The wines with Denominations of Origin Manzanilla de Sanlucar are produced by aging in boots under a cap of yeast, a process in which culture film-forming yeasts typical of this area rises above the surface of the wine. Thus, a “cap of yeast” that transforms this chamomile is created. 3. MANZANILLA SOLEAR, BARBADILLO WINERIES The Wine Spectator included the Manzanilla Solear, of the Barbadillo Wineries, in the Top 100 of the best wines of 2014, highlighting it as one of the most breeding chamomile of the market. According to this ranking “its years under the cap will provide incredible nuances”. It is a chamomile with character, full of elegance and finesse, pale yellow in color with beautiful reflections, very bright and intense, dry on the palate but soft and harmonious aftertaste, saline, with a very persistent taste, which combines perfectly with prawns and ham. 4. MANZANILLA SAN LEÓN, HEREDEROS DE ARGÜESO WINERIES Another chamomile most awarded of the market is the Manzanilla San León from the Herederos de Argüeso Wineries. To its credit, it has the Gold Medal from the Brussels World Contest or the Grand Prize of the

Iberwine Wine Competition. In the palate it is dry, wide, with a long and delicate taste. As good Chamomile it can be taken with ham and cheese, but the best combination will always be with native Sanlucar prawns. Aging Time: ov.er 60 months. ç The countryside south of Cordoba, the climate and the Pedro Ximénez grapes result in the wines Denominations of Origin Montilla – Moriles, which like chamomile are subjected to processes of aging under the cap. In this case it gives rise to Generous Wines (Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado), Generous Liquor (Pale Dry, Pale Cream, Cream and Medium) and Sweet Natural (Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel). 5. AMONTILLADO 1890 VIEJÍSIMO, FROM HEREDEROS TORRES BURGOS The Amontillado 1890 Viejísimo from Herederos Torres Burgos emerged as one of the four best wines from Spain in one of the most important events in the world of Spanish wine, Bacchus International Wine Competition 2015. This wine won the jury with its amber color, countersunk sharp aroma, complex sensations of good wood, with memories of a long biological aging. In the palate it is extremely attractive, large and powerful with a very persistent, sharp and elegant retronasal passage. 6. PEDRO XIMÉNEZ 1830 – ALVEAR WINERIES The wine Pedro Ximénez 1830 is considered one of the legendary jewels of Alvear Wineries, the oldest winery in Andalucia. This is one of the highest rated wines in Spain, a very old sweet wine from the hearth of Pedro Ximénez oldest winery, started in the boots dating from 1830. It is made from raisined grapes in the sun, very elegant, with a wonderful palate
and a perfect eternal end to finish a meal and quietly enjoy its taste. It has 98 points in the Penin Guide 2015. DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN CONDADO DE HUELVA The wines with Denominations of Origin Condado de Huelva mainly use the grape variety Zalema, that give rise to White Wines (Condado de Huelva Joven, Condado de Huelva and Condado de Huelva Tradicional), Generous (Condado Pálido and Condado Viejo) and Generous Liquor (Pale Dry, Medium, Cream and Pale Cream). 7. S´NARANJA–SAUCÍ WINERIES This Generous Liquor is an original wine from Sauci de Bollullos Par del Condado Wineries. This is one of the first wineries that saw in the orange an ideal complement to bring new sensations to the traditional Andalucian wines. It is aged for more than 10 years in American oak casks, to which the orange peel dried in the sun is added, which brings a distinctive mild flavor, citric smell and amber color, which counteracts with its sweetness. It provides a perfect pairing with chocolates and desserts. 8. MIORO GRAN SELECCIÓN – PRIVILEGIO WINERIES This is another unique wine, elegant that will delight the most discerning palates. MIORO Gran Selección is one of the great white wines of Andalucia recognized with awards such as the Bronze Tendril or the Bronze Medal at the International Exhibition of Marbella. It has a pale yellow color with green tones and an aroma reminiscent of flowers such as orange blossom or jasmine. Dry, very structured, pleasing to the palate, perfect for grilled fish, shellfish and seafood.

ENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN MALAGA Sweet wines with Denominations of Origin Malaga have a long tradition dating back centuries. They use the Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes to produce liqueur wines (natural sweet wines, Masters and Tender) and naturally sweet wines. 9. SEÑORÍO DE BROCHES, ANTONIO MUÑOZ CABRERA WINERIES This natural sweet wine of Muscat of Alexandria and from the Malagan Axarquia has been awarded the Gold Taste 90+ Wine Up Club in the Guide Wine Up or the Grand Mosque Gold 2010. It offers a bright pale color, clean and very alive in a glass. In the nose, it has a high olfactive intensity, with aromas of roasted pineapple, papaya, dried figs and balsamic finish. It is a complex and seductive wine, in the mouth it has great quality in its nuances and fit acidity, suggestive from start to finish. Its consumption is recommended with ice cream, sorbets, cakes, and very strong cheeses. 10. VICTORIA Nº2. ORDÓÑEZ WINERIES The Jorge Ordóñez winery does not have a long tradition in Malaga but soon has established itself as one of the most prominent. Their wine Victoria Nº2 has acquired international popularity as it is the only Spanish wine that has been present at the banquet celebrating the Nobel Prizes (2012). But this is not the only milestone, as it was also served on the 88th birthday of the Queen of England, Elizabeth II. This sweet white is bright, fresh and intense yellow, with mixed sensations of freshly peeled apple, orange peel, pollen and aromatic herbs. DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGIN SIERRAS DE MALAGA
56 The Grapevine
But not only sweet wines are the ones that stand out in Andalucia, thus it is shown in the Denominations of Origin Sierras de Malaga. This is the only Andalucian designation that protects red and rose wines of the Romé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo varieties and whites of Chardonnay, Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. 11. CHINCHILLA DOBLE DOCE, DOÑA FELISA WINERIES Ronda wines are gaining more weight in the whole of Spain. This red wine aged for more than twelve months in French oak barrels has intense aromas of ripe black fruit and liqueur that combine other with cedar and spices. It has a soft and fine entry that has conquered the most demanding palates. In fact this wine from the Doña FelisaChinchilla Wineries was tasted by
the Kings of Spain during their visit to Ciudad del Tajo in 2014, year in which it received the Gold Medal at the Concours International des Cabernets 2014 held in Paris. 12. SEDELLA RED The Sedella Red wines, come from the Malagan Axarquia, it is aged between 16 and 20 months in new French oak barrels. With a deep blue color, it has a high intensity and aromas reminiscent of the environment with iodine notes, saline, of the Mediterranean woods, fresh and fruity. It is very complex and elegant. The sensations in the mouth are soft, round but fresh and pleasant taste. It has qualities that have earned him the title of “red most highly valued of Andalucia” by ‘wine guru’, Robert Parker, in his magazine ‘The Wine Advocate”.

booty in. Then there were new trainers for 6e, didn’t need any, but had to have some! I was wilting in the unusual February sun and some stalls had started dismantling by 1.30pm so we went for tapas and a drink.
A TRIP TO HUELIN, MALAGA Josephine Drew Reports
M
y friend and I decided to go by Metro to Huelin. There is a flea market and a vintage clothing shop there apparently. My reason for going was that I wanted to go on the Metro in Malaga and didn’t know where to go. Its taken so long to complete a part of it that I felt I may have met my maker by the time the system is totally complete. My friend being younger, wanted to explore the vintage clothes shop. (I have seen these fashions come and go, done the Mini, 70s clumpy look, and the huge hair and shoulders of the 80s)! We arrived at the bus station and she looked on the map and decided that the vintage shop was only 10 mins away, (so no Metro trip for me) along Calle Heroe de Sosta. We found the shop but it was not really vintage, just second hand clothes, with expensive price tags, but as they were closing down everything was 3e or 5e, (they are going online). I found it a bit smelly, they had sprayed with a strong air freshener to mask the smell of some trainers, and I don’t know which was worse! I got a beach top and sunglasses, (beach top too small, so donated it to Cudeca), my friend got three
62 The Grapevine
items, all with a 'label'. for 9e! We felt we had to buy something, as we had made an effort to get there. Onwards and upwards we returned to Calle Heroe de Sosta and after about 5 minutes we saw a right hand turning and at the top we saw the market. (It really isn’t worth going on the metro because it would only be two stops from the bus station). I think the flea market is on every Wednesday, but I couldn’t find much information, there is plenty on the Mercadillo, but that is a daily covered market, I just think we were lucky in finding it with the help of a website called 'foursquare.com' this site suggested it was at Cruz de Humilladero. Neither of us are good at following Google maps, and really it was quite a fluke we found it as quickly as we did. By this time it was 12.30 and they pack in at 2pm, but we found a stall with mountains of clothes for 1e each or '7 for 5e', so into the piles we dived determined to get seven items! We did, mostly 'labels', Zara, Gerry Webber, and Punto Roma, and others we didn’t know. Some people were just loading their arms up without looking! Much better than the vintage shop, and the smallholder even gave us bags to stuff our
After our lunch break we decided to see the Automotive Museum location, we didn’t want to go into the museum, just find out how to get there, and go another day. It was quite nearby, only about 15 mins walk, located in a 1930s converted tobacco factory, along with a business centre and the Russian museum. We found it with no problem and popped out heads in the door and discovered there was no one on duty on the desk or anywhere on the ground floor, so we wandered about for 10 mins and then left! It really needs a long visit, the old Designer dresses were wonderful with descriptions of who wore them and when, and beautifully displayed. The cars were amazing too, but as we really shouldn’t have been there so we didn’t linger. The whole area of Huelin is lovely, with very wide pavements, and it has a different feel to Malaga City. We then went to the beach and sat for a while before going back the way we came, exhausted. So no Metro trip for me, but what I did do was get the free booklets from the El Perchal station giving me information. One small booklet is the times and the stations on lines 1 and 2 , the other larger one is a map of Malaga with practical information on monuments and museums, and the two Metro routes clearly visible on the map. So I would suggest when you go to the bus station, pop into the huge cavern that is the metro, and collect some booklets.

San Medir Festival – Fiesta de San Medir Barcelona The Festa de San Medir is named after a saint who lived in Barcelona during the year 303 under the vicious rule of the Romans who persecuted the Christians. Legend goes that Sant Medir planted some beans which grew immediately, and for that he was taken prisoner by the Romans. The festival is usually held on the 3rd March each year when the local neighbourhoods of the districts of Gracia, Sarria and Sants in Barcelona come to life with parades and celebrations. It also one of the sweetest festivals in Spain as toms of candy, toffee and sweets are thrown from the floats of the procession.

MARCH FOOD AND DRINK 2020
What Is In Season This Month?
M
arch is a month of transitions in Spain. The almond trees start blooming, yet chilling winds still rip through most of the peninsula. The hearty vegetables of winter are starting to disappear but the bright fruits of spring are only just starting to bud. The month of March arrives with an explosion of vegetables in the Spanish garden, specially in Navarre and La Rioja, including emblematic products like artichokes and asparagus. It also signifies the beginning of the alltoo-brief tear pea season in the Basque Country, an exquisite morsel adored by numerous Spanish chefs who know how to play with the minute size, sweetness and singular texture of these garden pearls. Torrijas A traditional treat that tends to make an appearance around the

Easter holidays. Torrijas are similar to French toast, but about 1 million times more delicious. Thick slices of day-old baguette-style bread is soaked in milk, doused in egg and then flash fried in olive oil. They are then soaked overnight in a light honey and cinnamon syrup. There are also milk and wine based versions. Lamb With the first signs of Spring come the first Spanish lambs. March is one of the best months for the Spanish delicacy cordero asado, roast lamb. As the saying goes, “Enero y febrero preparan el buen cordero” which translates to “The good lamb is made in January and February.”
The most popular (and delicious!) way to eat lamb in Spain is by slow roasting it in traditional wood burning ovens. Lamb chops are also hugely popular here and are also usually prepared roasted.
Both dishes are often served over Easter. Asturian Hard Cider March marks the beginning of Espicha season in Asturias, a three-month-long tribute to the region’s most famous beverage: hard apple cider. After nearly three months of barrel fermentation, the tart cider is ready to start being bottled in March. But after months of waiting for the sidra to be ready, Asturians just can’t wait any longer! They skip the bottle and go straight for the glass. The ceremonial opening of the first sidra barrels of the year is celebrated with a weekendlong festival to all things Asturias: Cabrales cheese, chorizo and plenty of folk dancing all accompanied by glass after glass (or culín after culín) of fresh hard cider.

Aspargus In Spain asparagus comes in two colours with two very distinct flavours. Green asparagus (often called trigueros) are often served simply pan seared in olive oil and sprinkled with coarse salt. White asparagus, on the other hand, are much more common here than their green counterparts and are often served boiled or conserved in vinegar. Asparagus is an ancient food that has been around for upwards of 6,000 years. It was one of Roman Emperor Augustus’s favourite foods. During the Renaissance asparagus were considered an aphrodisiac and thus were banned in convents!

LILAC TIME Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cรณmpeta
L
ilac Time A faint smell of lilac filled the air. There was always lilac in this part of town.Where there were grandmothers, there was always lilac. Laura Miller.
Lilacs are the essence of springtime to me; they have a unique and evocative perfume that takes me back years to childhood sunny spring days in my grandmother's garden. The laden lilac tree at the gateway to the garden would waft around its exquisite aroma, abuzz with busy bees. And to this day a whiff of lilac takes me back to tents in the garden, made from a clothes horse and old blankets, and drinks of orange squash on hot afternoons. The rest of the year, I admit, the tree led an unassuming life but for those few weeks it was a star,

similar, here, to our beloved dama de noche (cestrum nocturnum) which also looks rather boring but that night-time scent makes up for it all. Lilacs have been out-of-fashion for several years but it seems to be sparking interest again recently with various new varieties coupled with our general swing to seasonal pleasures instead of wall-to-wall flowers throughout the year, which can become boring too! In line with the demand for seasonal foods, our gardens are also taking on a seasonal look with exciting peaks. The divas of our gardens are only meant to shine for a short while, but the anticipation is utterly delicious! It's so delightful to wander through the garden finding something seasonal and special at every turn. Fleeting it may be but it's wonderful while it
is fleeting! The syringa is a genus of twelve recognised species native to woodland and scrubland stretching across much of southeastern Europe and into Asia. It now grows in many temperate areas of the world, including much of Europe and North America. A member of the olive family, and most closely related to the common privet bush, it is tough, tolerant and drought resistant and will support temperatures as low as -30C. The name syringa is derived from the ancient Greek word syrinx meaning tube, referring to the hollow branches of the tree, and syringa vulgaris is the one we are most likely to come across; other species are mainly native to Asia and harder to find here. The beautiful panicles of flowers are, typically, lilac coloured but can

These double-flowered cultivars were largely bred by Victor Lemoine. Lilacs grow best on well-drained, alkaline soils. They flower on old wood, so pruning should only be taken on if really necessary. Heavy restorative pruning to neglected trees can delay flowering for a couple of years. The trunk wood is close-grained and very hard, creamy on the outside with a purple-brown heart. It has been used for making musical instruments, knife handles and engraving works.
Easter (flowering at that time of the year) and is, thus, commonly known as paschalia. In North America the connotations are somewhat more sombre. It is commonly seen there growing on old homesteads, planted singly by the front door or in lines forming a boundary to the back corners of properties. The single tree was often used to mark the grave of a baby, either stillborn or miscarried, or where the placenta was buried after birth. Sympathy cards, to this day, often show a head of lilac. Few things in nature smell as good as these flowers, which made the tree useful for another purpose – to mask the smell of 'outhouses' or privies, as we would have called them.
