As I am writing, the weather has gone from hot to wet and cold over night, I hoping that by the time you read this we are back on track to summer. There is nothing worse than having visitors who relay to you the weather is so much better back home! The Grapevine would like to say well done to Martin Robinson who descended Mount Maroma by mountain bike, raising 1000euros for The help 4 Heros Charity and congratulations to Gemma and Jose on the birth of their baby boy Nicolas. Finally, remember to vote this month as the election results can and do affect future decisions where you live. Most candidates for Mayor and their teams are also providing information on their campaign in English so there is no excuse now!

CÓMPETA'S very own SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE ….

C

wonderful costumes including a pair of shoes flown in especially from Curacao (there is a definite whiff of Chester about this!) and a keen cast will ensure a hugely entertaining evening.

CAMPO’s choreographer Vonya Plush really has her hands full this year with a complicated dance routine featuring all seven virgin Dwarfs. “I’m really up against it due to a variety of body shapes and sizes” says Vonja “not to mention the gender mix, but it will all be alright on the night”. And to all you Aretha Franklin fans, the dwarfs promise to treat the performance with respect.

Tickets go on sale Monday May 2nd priced at just 12.50€ each and can be purchased direct from Todo Papel www.todo-todo.co.uk and Sugar & Spice www.sugarandspice.es Cómpeta. Seats are limited to 80 per night so please book early. Opening night is Wednesday June 8th and we will be performing through until Sunday June 12th. The ticket price includes a welcome drink and tapas.

inderella’s Ugly Sisters Chester and Ray certainly thought they could dance in last year’s production of Cinderella but I’m not sure what Arlene Phillips or Nigel Lythgoe would have said!

Choreography Camp continues and only the fittest will survive until opening night when only you the audience can judge whether the dwarfs have studied hard and CAN REALLY DANCE! To quote Walt Disney “if you can dream it you can do it” so we are all dreaming very hard! Much of last year’s talented cast and crew will once again be supporting the production along with a few new welcome additions including a well-known shopkeeper who is very popular on Saturday mornings. Can you guess who? “A great deal of work is underway to bring the audience a better visual and audio experience this year so not a single one of the multitudes of innuendos is missed” says Stage Manager Martin Robinson. Specialist lighting and sound provided by Ben Alford from Nerja Solutions, incredible sets courtesy of the ingenious John Plush,

VENUE CHANGE this year’s performances will now be staged at the new Museo de Artes y Costumbres in Cómpeta given over to us by Alcalde José Luis Torres Gutiérrez. He was so impressed with the Dance Gala last year he committed to help us when and wherever he can. What this means in practical terms is more money for the nominated charities to include the new Youth Centre here in our home village. The Museo will be transformed into a wonderful theatre complete with bar facilities so get your glad rags on! ndonesia anti-porn MP quits for watching porn!A member of parliament from an Islamic party which promoted antipornography legislation has resigned after being caught watching porn in parliament. Mr Arifinto of the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) was photographed looking at the images on Friday. He said he had inadvertently opened an email link which led him to the images. Pornography has become one of the testing grounds of conservative Islam's influence over politics in Indonesia. "For the recent developing media coverage, I apologise to all members of the party and parliament," Mr Arifinto - who goes by one name - told a news conference. "I will continue to work for my party. I'm also going to continue to better myself, by repentance, reading the Koran and asking for guidance." The BBC's Kate McGeown in Jakarta says the PKS was the driving force behind anti-pornography legislation, so that when one of its lawmakers was caught out, he was shown no mercy. If it is proved that Mr Arifinto was indeed downloading a pornographic movie, as photography of his behaviour appears to show, he could find himself charged with a law of his own party's making

S to fund $20m remake of Sesame Street for Pakistan. The United States is funding a Pakistani remake of the popular TV children's show Sesame Street. In a new effort to win hearts and minds in Pakistan, USAID - the development arm of the US government - is donating $20m (ÂŁ12m) to the country to create a local Urdu version of the show. The project aims to boost education in Pakistan, where many children have no access to regular schooling. The show is to be filmed in Lahore and aired later in the year "The programme is part of a series of ventures that is aimed at developing the educational infrastructure in the country,"

Virginia Morgan, a spokesperson for USAID, told the BBC. "Education is one of the vital sectors that need help in Pakistan." The show will be set in a village in Pakistan - rather than the streets of New York - with roadside tea shop and residents sitting on their verandas. The remake will star a puppet called Rani, the six-year-old daughter of a peasant farmer, with pigtails and a school uniform, according to Britain's Guardian newspaper.

lympian Carl Lewis announces bid for New Jersey. Nine-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis has said he will run again, but this time for a Senate seat in the state of New Jersey. "When I run, as you see from my record, I run to win," Mr Lewis said. The 49-yearold said he wanted to give back to the southern New Jersey district where he grew up by running for the Senate as a Democrat. Mr Lewis, a former sprinter and long-jumper, is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. He said he was seeking a Senate seat in order to inspire people and improve educational opportunities, particularly in the area of physical education for children. He also said he hoped to bring civility to the currently bitter US political climate. "The people are fed up with their elected officials playing the blame game and treating their political counterparts as enemies," he said. Mr Lewis, who will run in the 8th legislative district now represented by Republican Dawn Addiego, added that he would announce an issue-based platform within the next several days. It will be the first time Mr Lewis has sought elected office.

T

his month I had the pleasure of having a chat with Wayne Newman founder of CompetaArt. We talked about the talent and personalities of the various artists and wouldn't it be interesting to get to know each one individually. So, over the course of the next few months I will also be speaking to some of the group members about their work and life in Spain. To start the series off I thought it would be interesting for people to know a little bit more about CompetaArt, how it was formed and what they do. Wayne moved to Competa over 6 years ago with his Spanish wife Aurora, he formally worked in IT and it was these skills that led to the creation of ComeptaArt. It started with an artist friend asking Wayne to help create a CD which he could post out to exhibition halls. Wayne obliged and suggested a webpage would also be beneficial for self promotion. It was through this first web page that the idea of providing a platform for artists to come together both on the web and in person was developed. Wayne’s objective was to bring together artists and crafts people in the area so they could share ideas and projects common to all. What was initially a single web page for one artist soon became more than twenty pages showcasing artists and crafts people. Wayne then invited to them to his home for a glass of wine and as the ideas flowed, suggested they were now a group….. thus ComeptaArt was born! Each artist has now their own page with a description of themselves and a photo display of works. The group now also meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Anybody is welcome to have a chat with Wayne

with regards to joining the group and he describes Competart as an incredible mixture of nationalities, personalities, skills which is democratically run. One of their major projects is the annual walkabout the group organises. It is a walking tour of artist studios and exhibits, normally over the Easter weekend around Competa on both the Saturday and Sunday between 11.00am and 19.00. Wayne explained each member of the group helps with organising the weekend “for example I am in charge of logistics, Debbie sorts publicity , Karen the Swedish translation and we all pull together and work as fantastic team”. The walkabout is not only good self promotion for the artists and crafts people but also great promotion for the village of Competa. We are happy for others to join the walkabout for one year as an invited artist but after that they need to become a full member of the group to continue. Also throughout the year CompetaArt hold other exhibitions. Last year they held exhibitions in Nerja and Kenitra Morocco and after the walkabout and this year will be holding an exhibition at the Museo de Arte y Costumes in Competa from May 1st to July 15th. I am really looking forward to meeting the CompetaArt members as they sound a really interesting group of people and I hope The Grapevine will do them justice over the coming months.

Spring is here!

W

ith the change of the seasons, we all start to feel different! Perhaps one of the most positive changes happens when the cold winter moves aside for the arrival of spring: the days become longer, the temperature starts to rise, flowers start to bloom and Cómpeta regains it sparkle once again! Everybody feels more positive and the lethargy that accompanied us through the long winter months all of a sudden disappears and is replaced by a burst of energy and a desire to be outdoors as much as possible! The only problem with being outside so often is that we realize that since the summer the garden and the house have become a little ragged at the edges and need a little bit of tender loving care! That’s where we can help! Whether it be a full building job, small repairs or even giving the house a new lick of paint, our Spanish builder, with 30 years experience, is the perfect man to help you bring back the sheen to your home! He can either work alone or alongside yourself to get the job done in the best possible way! One of the worries that most people have when hiring local builders is the issue of the language: people worry that the message might not be

understood 100% and that the end result will not be exactly what they wanted! All of this is understandable but in this case not a problem as his English secretary will be on hand to translate as and when necessary, as well as handle any queries that you might have. Spanish houses have been built specifically to match life here in Spain. The materials can sometimes be different and the style most certainly is. So why not use the services of someone who understands exactly how these buildings work and why certain techniques, traditional and modern, are required here that may not be necessary in the UK? In these times of economic uncertainty, you can now choose to work alongside one of the best professionals in the area, without having to pay the high costs that come with hiring the services of other companies. This man will give you everything that you looking for at the most economical rate! For more information or to get a no-obligation quote call today and have an informal chat with his secretary. You won’t be disappointed with the results!

Quick Questions to The Waterworks Man S

ummer is here and it's back to long cold drinks and ice cubes from the freezer. But how many of us are still paying way too much for our drinking water? The WaterWorks Man is currently advertising a Two Stage Water Filter for just 99€, complete and fitted, but what are they, and what are the advantages of having one? Could you explain what your filters do? .

My most popular filter kit, and the one I'm currently promoting, is a 2-stage filter. This has two cartridge filters perfectly matched to give you great tasting water. Each has a specific task, giving you a more effective filtration system than many more expensive single filter systems.

The second filter is a granular activated carbon filter and this is effective in removing chlorine, odour, organic contaminants and pesticides. Both cartridges have a maximum flow rate of approximately 2.5 litres per minute and a service life of 6 months or 5000 litres. 5000 litres, that sounds like a lot of water? .

Yes, it's equivalent to a thousand of the five litre bottles of water that you pay around 50 cents for at the supermarkets. So that amount of bottled water would be costing you 500€. You don't need to be a mathematician to work out that my filter will save you over 400€ in the first year for that same volume of water.

38

Well it gets even better! The replacement cartridges are just 10€ each, and they both need replacing at the same time. You can change them yourself, but let's assume you ask me to change them for you, the total cost would be 30€. That means your next and every subsequent 5000 litres will save you 470€, it really is a no brainer!

x

The first filter is a polypropylene sediment filter with a 5 micron rating, this catches all the larger particles of sand, dirt and rust which would otherwise contaminate the second filter.

The Grapevine

What about the ongoing running costs? .

Will I use 5000 litres in 6 months? .

Probably not, but a large family might do. It equates to just less than 3 bottles per day, for a year. The recommended life of the cartridges is 5000 litres or 6 months, but some of my customers who use less water than that, leave replacement for longer without any water quality

issues. Does the filter need much space? And can you put them anywhere? .

The filter cartridges fit neatly in the cupboard under your sink and the pure water faucet (tap) fits either into your sink top or your worktop. There's a picture of one in this month's Grapevine. Finally Geoff, do your filters soften the water? .

No, to soften your water you would need a water softener or an electronic conditioner, both of which I can also supply incidentally. Water filters do take a small amount of hardness (cal) out of the water, but they don't have a dramatic effect on the hardness. They are designed to improve water purity and taste. The Palm Moth (paysandisia archon)

Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

M

any of you, by now, will have become intimately acquainted with the rhynchophorus ferrugineos, or red palm weevil. As if our palms didn’t have enough problems at the moment, there is now a new threat on the horizon – paysandisia archon or the palm moth. It’s rather ironic that both of these insects, which so tragically devastate our palms, are also very beautiful creatures. This new danger looks like a large and impressive butterfly but is, in fact, a moth though, exceptionally, it flies during daylight hours. (In case you’re wondering, one of the main differences between moths and butterflies is that butterflies hold their wings vertically when resting whereas moths hold them flat against their body). This beauty has a wingspan of around 10cm; the forewings are dark green with brown streaks and the rear wings are bright red with bold black and white markings. The females

are larger than the males and have a prominent ovipositor. A native of South America – Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and southern Brazil in particular – it arrived in Europe via a batch of infected palms. Have you heard this story somewhere before?? So far it has been sighted in certain areas of France, Italy, Portugal and – importantly for us - in Gerona, Alicante, Valencia and Mallorca. In its homeland, it is not considered a particular pest because it has natural enemies in the form of predators and parasitic mites which limit its spread and because it attacks naturally occurring palms which are not a food crop and, therefore, considered relatively unimportant. Thus its life cycle has not been studied, so we are rather ‘in the dark’. However, since its arrival in Europe, it has been noted that it has a very wide range of food

sources: brahea armata, chamaerops humilis, phoenix canariensis, phoenix dactylifera, phoenix roebelenii, trachycarpus fortune, washingtonia filifera and washingtonia robusta. To a lesser degree, it seems to also have a taste for butia, livistonia, sabal and trithrinax. So, it could be said that, almost all of our palms are under attack. Initial investigations suggest that the moth has a long development cycle in comparison with the red palm weevil. Adults can usually be sighted Typical leaf damage between June and September. Eggs are laid at the base of the palm leaf or in the heart of the palm. Newly hatched larvae are pink initially but, as they fatten up, they turn creamywhite and reach 6cm long. The larvae bore long tunnels through the young leaves developing in the crown and down into the trunk. Chewed leaves, as the picture, are a typical warning. These larvae live for 9 months and weaken the palm fatally. When they pupate, they wrap palm fibres around themselves, forming cocoons which markedly resemble those formed by the red palm weevil. Larvae Because of their slower development rate, and the reduced number of larvae, the devastation is not usually as quick as that caused by the palm weevil; large palms will sometimes survive but young palms are often destroyed, as are those in pots. But, because little is known of the invader, no method of control has yet been found. Chemicals need to be tested before general release in public parks and private gardens and biological control, in the form of natural (and safe) enemies need several years to develop. This very lovely looking insect – the largest that has ever been accidentally introduced into Europe – is yet another threat to our beleaguered palms. It’s almost certainly going to be heading our way soon so study the accompanying photos and be on the lookout for beautiful moths!

TU PUEDES CONFIAR EN NUESTRO GRUPO YOU CAN HAVE CONFIDENCE WITH OUR TEAM

I

am pleased to be supporting the campaign of José Luis Torres Gutiérrez for a second term as Mayor of our beloved Cómpeta. I got to know the Mayor through organising the Ballet and Dance Gala last year. I was impressed by his interest and involvement in the project, and importantly, everything he promised was delivered.

ü

As our Mayor he paid out of his own pocket for Gala tickets so that some of the poorer families of the town could enjoy the show.

ü Mindful of the impact of recession on the whole community he took a voluntary pay cut on his Mayoral salary.

ü An elderly British lady who needed handrails to assist her mobility was visited personally by the Mayor to ensure that he understood her needs and arranged immediate installation.

ü When a family from Malaga went missing on a mountain walk the Mayor went out personally at 1.30 am to assist the Guardia Civil in finding our lost visitors.

ü On the back of the Dance Gala and other

cultural events the Mayor is committed to establishing a community theatre where genuine cross-cultural arts programmes can be held. He is also committed to supporting young unemployed people from across the community to become involved in the theatre project, letting them gain practical skills to boost their confidence.

ü Our Mayor is no faceless politician, he is a ands on Mayor and his door is open to all.

The Grapevine

46

The Mayor wishes to provide a window across the community through which all can share a vision for our town. He wishes to ensure that he can support all in ensuring that doors are open to all in getting involved in opportunities within our community. He wishes to build bridges across our community so that Cómpeta remains quintessentially Spanish, but values and enjoys the contribution from all nationalities that live here and consider Cómpeta to be their home. In respecting and valuing the crosscultural richness in our community the Mayor is thinking about ways in which communications across the community can be improved. Our so called “Foreigners Department” sees over 500 people each year, but this also includes Spanish citizens, for example an older Spanish couple who were entitled to a French pension were given assistance in translating all their correspondence from French into Spanish. With many languages other than English being used in our community it is vital that as many other languages as possible are catered for. The Mayor has also agreed that he will provide regular updates via The Grapevine on what is going on in the Town Hall, including briefings on key issues. He has established a Facebook page, which will be updated regularly and will invite ideas and suggestions from all citizens. I should finally add that our Mayor has done his utmost to ensure that the governance of our community is transparent. One reads of corruption in local politics, even in the UK, but Jose Luis can be trusted to keep local government clean. Please consider supporting our Mayor in serving our community for a further term. In José Luis you’ve got a friend.. Dr. Ray Rowden, Former Special Adviser, House of Commons Health Select Committee.

t may well be that your political opinions or leanings do not always agree with the prospective candidates in the forthcoming local elections, but remember the old adage that “Local Politics is all about local issues”, and try to pick the best man for the job.

I

One of my strongest wishes would be to put in place improved information and help facilities for everyone including a strengthened Foreigner's department, and already I have a multinational team of residents of Cómpeta who would be dedicated to this task.

There has been much promised in the past, but whether your first worry is the response time of the police, the dedicated medical staff at the Health Centre doing their best in overcrowded conditions, road repairs, signposting in the campo, or free Spanish courses for the children of expatriates who live in Cómpeta, we are now in 2011 and many people who made a choice four years ago have not seen their hopes realised. Now you will soon have the opportunity to choose again.

Think about the benefits of that to you! I always listen to the wishes of the residents of Cómpeta and try to act accordingly. I want everything that you want.

For many residents one of their most important desires is fair representation for everyone, no matter whom you are. It is the starting point for progressive and successful local government. My name is Raúl Martín López, I am the PSOE candidate, and I have strong views about fairness and improving the quality of life for everybody in Cómpeta.

50

The Grapevine

But to get these improvements in our village you need to give your support to a team of people who will put your wishes into practice. 43% of Cómpeta residents are expatriates so if you all take this opportunity it will make a huge difference to the result of the election. Don't leave it to somebody else! If you have any questions you are welcome to email me: raulmartin2011@hotmail.com For more information: www.psoecompeta.blogspot.com Your decisions today will affect your options tomorrow. Diary of a Thespian (I said, “Thespian”!)

H

ow the hell did I get here? Last year I was one of many who attended the successful adult Panto, Cinderella, in aid of CUDECA and other local charities and if you read my review you might remember I was a little apprehensive about amateur dramatics. That is despite having done a little acting darlings, in my youth, don’t you know; a sidekick hunchback to Dracula, a badger and a lamplighter is the sum total. My dubious claim to fame is the guy who I replaced as the hunchback sidekick went on to be a star of The Full Monty, Flintstones, the TV comedy Thin Blue Line and now appears in adverts for Tesco. Look where it got me. Maybe that was it. It hit a nerve and the pull of treading the boards again was too much. Or was it peer pressure from friends who, in some strange way, were encouraging me for some private joke so they could ‘extract the urine’ so to speak. “Go on, we think you should do it. You’d be good. It’ll only be a laugh” A laugh for whom? I’m easily led. More credence is given to this latter theory when I persuaded another friend to take part for this “laugh”, who then promptly pulled out after the first script meeting. I won’t embarrass him by mentioning any names. Oh, sorry, I have to interrupt this article briefly as my wife has asked me to pop and buy some SUGAR and we need something to SPICE up tonight’s curry……..right I’m back with you. As I was saying, I won’t mention any names.

So the first meeting was held to announce the next CAMPO Panto and it was to be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. All those interested were asked to register their interest, whether it was acting or working behind scenes and we were given a taste of what we were in for as some of last year’s participants recounted their experiences. I think some were still in character from last year. Blimey, does it last that long? Next it was the script meeting, which I was drafted in on along with my then partner in crime. For the purpose of this article we’ll just call him ‘Judas’! Now, this is an adult panto but despite this some of the lines still had to be removed or changed to suit the audience we would be performing in front of in Cómpeta. If you are reasonably broadminded you will find it entertaining but if you think ´bashing the bishop’ is an assault on the clergy and a ‘sizeable lunchbox’ is something you take to work packed full of cheese sandwiches and a Kit Kat, then maybe it won’t be your thing. Some scenes needed to be re-written so a few of us were to work on that. Whilst that was being done we were all eventually contacted by Tom, the Director, to confirm the parts we would be playing. Although Snow White doesn’t have a Dame, as this is no normal panto, Chester Williams would take the lead role of Snow White. As not many 3 foot high people applied for the part of dwarfs, Tom had to make do with what he had. Geoff Tyler (6’ 4”) would be Bashful, Ray Rowden (6’ 1”) would be Dopey, Phil Smith (6’)

.

Following the allocation of the panto’s roles, we then had the first full read through so we could all get a feel of how the script sounded and each “hackter” had the opportunity to get a feel for their own part. Being Sleazy there was plenty of opportunity to feel my part and deliver lines along the same theme. I did warn you. Immediately, some characters already seemed to be some way down the line of being formed, or was it just clever casting? Some of the more risqué sounding lines actually took on a new life and sounded less risqué with emphasis and character behind them. It was already taking shape. .

Rehearsals started shortly afterwards and we started to get a good idea as to how the panto was going to look as well as sound. Some “hackters” had even gone as far as using props and even breaking in costume items to enhance their character at this early stage. Women’s shoes with a man’s jeans and shirt was a sight needing a double take. .

Mesón Las Gemelas Avenida Torrox, 4 Cómpeta, Málaga Tel: 952 516 395 651 309 684

The script was still evolving as we rehearsed and no doubt we will have further changes as we go. Behind the scenes, so to speak, people were working away on costume design, further script rewrites, scenery, venue and even dance routines. You’ve heard of the film, My Left Foot? Well this was like the sequel, Two Left Feet. I’ll say no more at this stage. .

As we approach May’s rehearsal schedule, thoughts start to turn to actually learning lines and not reading them from our scripts. The show will start to take further shape as “hackters” won’t be able to hide behind their scripts in between lines but will need to start acting or risk looking like a stage prop that only comes to life in short, sharp bursts. If you don’t learn them well enough it’s when the Prompt, Mave Moore, becomes your best friend. Upset her and our prompt won’t be forthcoming, you’ll look like a lemon and your fellow “hackters” won’t thank you as the cue for their line fails to deliver. Still, that’s half the fun of amateur dramatics, isn’t it? It’s like watching F1 motor racing, nobody watches to see a flawless performance they want to see a spectacular crash and the ensuing chaos that follows. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of that as we continue to the big night. Now back to work on my character of Sleazy – another normal day in the shop, then. .

The characters of each “hackter” outside their actual part also started to show themselves; divas, method actors, type cast actors but far be it for me to pinpoint which type applied to whom. We can’t have any backstage ego clashes now can we? Well, you know what these actor types can be like don’t you, sweetie. I’m still waiting for confirmation of

would be Grumpy and yours truly (6’ 3”) would play the part of Sleazy. That’s not a misprint I did say Sleazy. Some might say type casting at its most blatant others might say I’m misunderstood. Janice Tyler as Doc and Chris Love as Happy are the closest you’ll probably get to dwarf size but still some way off. As for the type casting of a bossy Doc, I’m saying nothing.

Customer Service as it used to be!

P

erhaps one of the most obvious differences between life in Cómpeta and our old life in the UK can be seen every time we walk into a supermarket. There are no bright fluorescent lights, no supermarket jangles being played on the radio or twenty different aisles trying to tempt us with everything from aspic to zucchini. Now let’s be honest, there are times when we all might miss being able to wander aimlessly around a huge superstore, choosing between 20 different varieties of baked beans! However, there is one thing that you most definitely don’t get at ASDA or Tesco and that is the old fashioned service that many of you will remember from the good old days! Being able to walk into a local supermarket where they know you and exactly what you want: somewhere that spend you a little while having a chat about the weather, the family and the latest happenings in the village! For those of you who already shop at the Coviran at the top of the village, close to Plaza del Carmen, you will recognize that this is in fact just the treatment that you get every time you walk through the door! Ana, Santiago and their two sons are always to willing to help you find just what you need. Anything that you can’t find in the shop, whether that be English or Spanish products, you can order and they will do their best to have it for the next time you visit. After 30 years of running the family business the thing that makes this particular supermarket unique is their delivery service: not only do they deliver to both Cómpeta and Canillas but also to the campo. In fact, if you need to get to the shop and don’t have transport of your own, they will even come and pick you up and take you home when you’re ready! If you’re thinking that all this is well and good but how are you going to tell explain to them where

you live and how to get there, without getting into a big Spanish muddle, don’t worry, they even speak English! So back to making comparisons between the British superstores and our local Spanish supermarkets: we might think that these “little” shops won’t have everything that we need but you will be pleasantly surprised. As you can see in this month’s advert, besides the two weekly food offers, they even have special offers on gloss paint and garden compost! So next time you’re in the village and need to do your weekly shop, why not call in and see for yourself! You won’t be disappointed!

Beyond Romania's ice hotel

by Andy Wilkes

I

n the March Grapevine magazine I wrote about me and my wife's experience in an ice hotel. If I am honest the ice hotel was our reason for being in Romania and as we were busy in the lead up to Christmas we did not really have any chance to research about the country which meant that upon arrival we had little idea what to expect or even what the hotels we would be staying in would be like. Being a natural pessimist I was not expecting much but a quick read through the in-flight magazine and our recently purchased guide book on our flight into Bucharest had raised my hopes. We flew with Romania's budget airline Blue Air which was like flying with EasyJet but just a little shabbier. As we circled over a Bucharest everything was white with snow; the recent disruption at Heathrow airport sprang to mind, but the pilot adeptly landed the plane on the snow covered runway without a problem. An English speaking taxi driver later told us that the year before there was a metre of snow in the streets of Bucharest and yet everything was back to normal within a day which just shows that BAA have a lot to learn and to explain. We shuffled off of the plane and through passport control. Just behind passport control was a small baggage collection belt. We looked around to see which belt our bags would be appearing only to realise that the 10 foot long belt circling before me, so laden with bags and suitcases that they were falling off was it, the only belt. Being British at first I politely stood near the belt trying not to actually knock into or touch anybody, before then getting a bit angry and then finally wading in rudely and grabbing our bags as they emerged. This was our first ever visit to an eastern block country and the baggage collection belt experience felt exactly like my preconception of such a (former communist) country. But this was not Ceauþescu's communist country; this was Romania, member of the European Union since 2007. I later discovered that the airport we had flown into, Baneasa, was the airport used by Blue Air and the main international airport. Ah well. You get what you pay for! Once out of the airport we got into a taxi to go to our hotel; the taxi driver started the engine of his

66

The Grapevine

Peugeot and huge icon of an engine appeared on the dashboard. The taxi driver calmly took his wallet out of his pocket and put it over the dashboard display covering the worrying engine icon. His magic wallet obviously worked as we go to our hotel without a hitch. There is much to see in Bucharest; the Palace of Parliament is the second-largest building in the world after the Pentagon. This audacious building gives a perfect insight into Ceauþescu's megalomania and boasts some unbelievable statistics; designed and built by 4,000 architects and 20,000 builders, 4,500 chandeliers, 1,100 rooms the list goes on. After our guided tour of the building (mainly in Romanian as we were the only foriegners there) that lasted for around an hour, we were informed that we had just seen 1% of the building. I asked our guide to clarfiy two items in our Insight Guide to Romania. Firstly, as stated in said book was there a sliding roof to allow a helicopter to land inside. She said the was a myth. Secondly, are there secret tunnels in the building. She said there were but she did not know about them as they are secret. I did not pluck-up the courage to ask if the tunnels we build by death-row prisoners to maintain their secrecy. In case you are wondering the guide did speak English, which was lucky as my Romanian is a bit rusty. That said Romanian does share many words with Spanish as it is the only Balkan language with Latin roots. It is quite strange to hear words like 'factura' or 'piscina' in the middle of a Russian sounding sentence. Also in Bucharest we happened upon a traditional shopping centre; not some glossy mall of wellknown shops – although these do exist in Bucharest – but a higgledy-piggledy collection of various stalls selling their wares. Here we witnessed a hangover from the communist days we had read about in our guidebook; downward escalators were blocked and there were security guards stopping people from going down in the lift. Later on in the trip we mentioned this to a local who said he had never heard of such a thing. Having spoken to a number of Romanian's the general feeling was that they were the poor man of Europe and that all other countries are prosperous

and living well. They thought the roads were terrible in Romania and that the trains were always late, neither of which we found to be accurate. My wife Debbie is a much more avid reader than me and before our trip a book called Along the Enchanted Way by William Blacker. The book is an autobiographical story of how Blacker moved to Romania in the early 80's, fell in love with a gypsy woman and lived with a group of gypsies (I just looked at the pictures). The book regularly mentioned a plum vodka called Þuicã and she was very keen to try some, so in a restaurant on our first night she ordered a glass. Let's suffice to say we did not bring a bottle back with; rather than a fruity little number it tasted like agua fuerte mixed with vodka. I too came a cropper on the alcohol front. Another item on our list of things to do before we ar 50 is for me to drink vodka in the eastern block, so one night in a less than salubrious bar I ordered a nice sounding concoction from the cocktail menu. The waitress carried drinks over and handed a bright pink mixture in a cocktail glass to my wife. She informed the waitress that the pink drink was in fact for me. I did drink it. It was very nice. But I did ask the waitress to put it in a straight glass for me!

with our food said “if anybody in here annoys you, just let me know and I will beat them up for you”. Normally you could laugh off such a comment, but we were after all in vampire territory, Transylvania. In fact a visit to Bran castle, a delightful castle that has somehow become intertwined with the Dracula story, we began to 'see' more and more vampires. In fact the more we drank the more we saw. Bran castle has no real links with the Dracula, despite a number of vampire films being shot there. In fact Vlad the Impaler, who the story is based, never lived there. However it is still worth a visit. A must see when in the region is Sighisoara, which is one of the best-preserved mediaeval towns in Europe. After 5 minutes of wandering around it is easy to th see why this almost intact 16 century town is a Unesco world heritage site. If it was not for cars parked in the street it is like going back in time. Time seems to have stood still too for some Romanians living their simple life working the land seemingly oblivious to the fact we are in the st 21 century. See these people wearing their sheep skins and driving horse drawn carts is a sight to behold.

Bran (Dracula's) Castle, Romania

Every hotel we stayed in on our trip had warm hotel rooms. In fact so warm that although it was snowing outside we had to open the bedroom windows in each one. The hotel we stayed in prior to visiting the ice hotel was in Brasov overlooked the main square and contained probably the biggest real Christmas tree I have ever seen; it was bedecked in lights and stood over small wooden huts selling hot mulled wine and other delicacies. It was very romantic and looked truly magical in fact just like one of the high quality Christmas cards available in Todo Papel, Cómpeta. Sorry I should point out here that like commercial TV stations in the UK I have begun to offer product placement. If all goes well next month's article will be a review of my new Rolls Royce. The list goes on of the things we did during our 8 days in Romania; we visited the European city of culture 2007, Sibiu, where a waitress said to me the strangest thing I have ever heard in a restaurant. After asking us if everything was OK ff

The people of Romania were very friendly and welcoming, the food was good and we only had chance to see about 10% of the things in our guide book. We would not hesitate to go back to see the painted monasteries in Moldavia, sample the Turkish influenced area of Dobrogea overlooking the Black Sea or to visit the more cosmopolitan Banat region in the west of the country. Maybe one day the locals will realise just what a gem of a country they live in .

Taking the wife to the Rodeo A man took his wife to the rodeo and one of the exhibits is that of breeding bulls. They went up to the first pen and there was a sign that said, "This bull mated 50 times last year." The wife poked her husband in the ribs and said, "He mated 50 times last year." They walked a little further and saw another pen with a sign that said, "This bull mated 120 times last year." The wife hit her husband and said, "That's more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him." They walked further and a third pen had a bull with a sign saying, "This bull mated 365 times last year." The wife got really excited and said, "That's once a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one." The husband looked at her and said, "Go up and ask him if it was with the same cow." The husband's condition has been reduced from critical to stable and he should make a full recovery

THE STEWARDESS A guy is sitting in the bar in departures at a busy airport. A beautiful woman walks in and sits down at the table next to him. He decides because she's got a uniform on, she's probably an off-duty flight attendant.

ONE LINERS My wife wants me to give her a Rastafarian hair do. I'm dreading it. For some weird reason today, I had the urge to get a caricature done of me...I was strangely drawn...! I thought about Chessington, Woodlands and Thorpe Park before deciding on Disneyland... It was the last resort.

So he decides to have a go at picking her up by identifying the airline she flies for, thereby impressing her greatly.

I'm a pretty good Ventriloquist... Even though I say so myself

He leans across to her and says the Delta Airlines motto 'We love to fly and it shows'.

My new dating web site for chickens has not turned into the financial success that I was hoping for... I'm struggling to make hens meet

The woman looks at him blankly. He sits back and thinks up another line.

I accidently drank a litre of food colouring... I feel like I'm dyeing inside!

He leans forward again and delivers the Air France motto 'Winning the hearts of the world'.

I just bought a Monopoly set which had no instructions... What are the chances?

Again she just stares at him with a slightly puzzled look on her face.

I've been described as a cracker, probably because I'm embarrassing to pull, you don't always get a bang and my jokes are terrible...

Undeterred, he tries again, this time saying the Malaysian Airlines motto ‘Going beyond expectations'. The woman looks at him sternly and says 'What the f**k do you want?' 'Ah!' he says, sitting back with a smile on his face. "Ryanair

I sell balloons for 10p each or if you want them blown up it's 15p...I've adjusted the price to allow for inflation... Currently stuck at an auction bidding for a house with a lengthy corridor... I'm in it for the long hall. I'm not a fan of violent sex... I won't beat around the bush I had a threesome with an obtuse and an isosceles It was a love triangle! I was walking into my local pub, when I suddenly realised it was darts night... So I did a 180, and left!!

"ON YOUR BIKE!" Martin Robinson, aged 63 and living in Canillas de Albaida, did get on his bike to raise money for the Help 4 Heroes charity. As an adventure sports enthusiast Martin looked at our local mountain to provide this unique challenge. On Wednesday 13th April Martin successfully completed probably the first descent of Mount Maroma (2068 mtrs) from the summit to the village of Canillas de Albaida; a distance of 15 km and a drop of about 6,000 ft; on a mountain bike. The descent was of course preceded by the ascent that turned out to be very tiring as all the bike parts had to be carried to the summit and reassembled for the descent. Martin and his team managed to push, carry and pull the bike over really rough ground. He managed to ride most of the way down the top section to the meadow for phase two of the trip. Martin arrived at the high meadow after descending the steepest part three hours later absolutely exhausted but pleased that he had got over the worst section, ahead of schedule. He then set off from the high meadow to ride the 10

km down the winding mountain tracks through the forest to the Hotel Finca El Cerrillo near Canillas that marked the end of the event. A motor cycle escort from 'Trailblazer's' went ahead of Martin arriving at the finish in record time as they descended down to the finish at the hotel; the major sponsor of the event. They finished the day with a few cold beers

with loyal supporters and hotel guests kindly donated over 100€ to the H4H charity. A memorable day for all. Help 4 Heroes is a charity devoted to the rehabilitation of injured service personnel. Martin said that "there is no doubt that I could not have completed this fund raiser without the help of my supporters who encouraged me when I was exhausted and were strong and willing when I needed help with all my kit. They helped me reach my target of 1000€ along with many others that contributed on line to H4H” Martin summed up this event by saying "I think that I should seriously consider my next challenge; maybe a sponsored week in a luxury spa perhaps?”

BIRDS AND THE BEES There were two courses in April in Cómpeta one in the Town Hall with Birgit, Nacho and Jose Maria all experts on the environment in particular flowers, plants and wildlife. The second course was held in the open air at Casa La Mina, what the Spanish call, "Aula en la Naturaleza". In total there were 51 participants representing a dozen different nationalities. Jose Maria Arjona led the course and explained in great detail all about "The Birds and the Bees", and the "Flora and Fauna" in the Sierra. For more information on courses in Cómpeta please contact Tom Ferber at the Town Hall.

SOCIALIST (PSOE) Pilar Ortiz Hidalgo was named the new mayor of Canillas de Aceituno in April, becoming the town’s first female mayor. She has taken over from Jose Manuel Aranda, mayor since 1999, who resigned on March 16 after being disqualified from public office for nine years for town planning offences. She will be mayor until the mayoral elections.

REMAINS OF ANCIENT ROMAN TEMPLE UNCOVERED Work being carried out in the area surrounding the Roman ruins in Torrox have uncovered remains of a temple dating back to the first century. Between 30 and 40 pieces, mainly lintels and fragments of columns have been found near the coast and work is ongoing in the hopes of discovering other hidden remains. The archaeologist supervising the works, Aurora Urdiales, has classified it as an “impressive discovery, both due to the magnitude and dimension of each element and due to the state of conservation in which they have been found”. The temple is believed to be part of the old Roman town of Caviclum, located in the area where the lighthouse can now be seen. SPAIN’S ONLY SEVEN-STAR HOTEL TO OPEN IN ALMUÑECAR WORK on the first seven-star hotel in Spain, the Bahia Fenicia, planned in Almuñecar, is due to begin in 2013. This will be the second seven-star hotel in Europe. the project for the complex.
