Spanish court convicted three men of mass murder yesterday for their part in the 2004 Madrid train bombings, but one of the alleged ringleaders was acquitted. At the end of a four-month trial, 21 of the 28 defendants were convicted on at least one charge for their role in Europe's worst Islamist attack, in which 191 people were killed and more than 1,800 injured when bombs hidden in duffle bags ripped through four crowded commuter trains. The attacks were Spain's equivalent of September 11, a day of chaos and confusion as frantic relatives rang mobile phones which went unanswered amid the carnage. The government of José María Aznar, an ally of George Bush, initially blamed the Basque separatist group Eta, despite evidence of Islamist involvement. Three days later he and his People's party were toppled by an electorate which believed it had been misled.

A

chance to dine with the world-famous Spanish restaurateur Ferran Adria sold at auction for 220,500 Hong Kong dollars (£18,800/). Bidding started at HK$40,000 for the meal with Adria, often cited as the planet's most talented and imaginative chef. His now-closed restaurant El Bulli was rated the world's best five times by British magazine The Restaurant. An online bidder beat out four others at the Sotheby's auction in Hong

Kong with a winning bid of HK$180,000, not including a buyer's premium of more than 20%. The winner and three friends will eat with Adria and his brother at a restaurant in Barcelona and visit the premises of El Bulli in Catalonia, Spain. Another meal with the chef known for his creations in molecular gastronomy will be auctioned on 26 April in New York.

T

he Spanish region of Catalonia will not make the spending cuts necessary to achieve its 2013 budget deficit as they would be impossible to impose, The region's economy minister Andreu Mas-Colell told Reuters. Catalonia would need to cut €4.8bn (£4bn) from its budget, which includes health and education spending, to meet the central government's target of 0.7 percent of gross domestic product, Mas-Colell said. "We will not make these cuts," he said. "It is just impossible, I don't know how to even start." Reining in the spending of Spain's 17 regional governments is key to the country achieving overall budget deficit targets imposed by Brussels, though the goals are likely to be increased to give Spain more time, leeway that will be passed on to the regions. Catalonia, whose leader Artur Mas is driving for independence from Spain, has an economy almost as big as Portugal's and generates one fifth of Spanish gross domestic

product. The region overshot a 1.5% deficit target by 0.5 percentage points in 2012. Catalonia's leader is in a standoff with Spain's prime minister Mariano Rajoy, as the Catalans plan on holding a referendum on independence next year. The central government, meanwhile, has the power to give the region more time to balance its books.

new book about Princess Letizia, Spain’s future Queen, threatens to heap yet more embarrassment on Spain’s Royals just days after Princess Cristina, the King’s youngest daughter was made a suspect in an embezzlement case. The book is written by David Rocasolano, a once-trusted cousin of the 40-year-old Princess Letizia and promises to reveal intimate details of her life before she married Crown Prince Felipe in May 2004.He claims in the 300 page book, which is published later this week, that the Princess, a divorcee and former newsreader had an abortion before meeting the heir to the throne and that she asked for the paperwork to be destroyed just weeks before their engagement was announced. Mr Rocasolano claims that he was tasked by the Princess and Prince Felipe to destroy paperwork kept at the private clinic where the procedure took place in October 2002.

Tourists captured on video their guide Tommy Owen get out of their boat and pick out a 10ft Burmese python from the water. Owens can be seen struggling with the snake as it wraps itself around his arm and squeezes, before his partner, Warren Wortman, cut its head off. "I didn't even realise it was 10ft," Tommy Owen said. "I thought it was definitely bigger than me but I didn't realise it was three times the size of my own arm."He told NBC2 that he "launched on it essentially, ambushed it like any other predator out here and just got it - had the best grip on it and never let go the entire tussle.”

Amateur video from the ski resort of Mont St Sauveur in Quebec, Canada, shows the group skiing down a short slope before completing a backflip and landing on the run below. All the skiers managed to land on their feet still holding the hands of their fellow participants. The stunt is thought to be the largest simultaneous backflip ever completed by skiers. The group had hoped to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, but they were too late for the entry deadline so will try the joint backflip again next year.

rom a "nervy" red to a white boasting a subtle hint of "spring hedgerows", if you have ever been baffled by the descriptions given to wines then don't worry, you are not alone. New research has revealed widespread bewilderment at the terms used by producers, retailers and critics to convey a bottle's taste. More than half of wine drinkers who took part in the survey (55 per cent) said the descriptions given to wines failed to help them get an understanding of the flavour. And the drinkers were also able to pick out those terms they found most mystifying. They were given a list of 43 words and phrases used to describe different wines and were asked to identify the five they found most and least helpful in conveying the drink's taste. The survey of 1,000 wine drinkers by polling firm, One Poll, found that in total, more than half of respondents (55 per cent) said that descriptions failed to help them understand the taste!

FOCUS ON JEREZ Take a trip to Jerez de La Fonterea between 6th to 12th May for their Horse Fair.

S

pain's world famous sherry producing town, Jerez de la Frontera, plays host to the most prestigious equine heritage event in the whole of Europe, the 'feria del caballo'. The annual horse fair began as a livestock show in 1284 and is now a magnet for horse lovers. It attracts many thousands of visitors each year who come not just to witness, but to participate in one of the biggest street parties in Spain. The opening of the feria is an official event initiated by the Mayor of Jerez. As the crowd gathers at dusk, they are treated to a spectacular massive firework display which is followed by the big switch on of the impressive feria lights. Usually the mornings host all kinds of horse related activities such as high school dressage, carriage competitons, accoso y arriba, international show-jumping competitions, vaulting, select

14 The Grapevine

livestock exhibitions and auctions. However, the highlight of the Jerez Horse Fair is undoubtedly the "Como Bailan los Caballos Andaluces " or the 'Dancing Andalusian Horses' performed by the world famous Royal Equestrian School of Art From lunchtime onwards, the Gonzรกlez de Hontoria park begins to fill with beautifully decorated carriages that parade the show ground. Everyone gets involved and both horse and riders are dressed a la Andaluz, a spectacle well worth seeing. The 'casetas' are structures that range from small tents to large pavilions, from plain to elaborate, serving up food that ranges from the simplest tapas to full-scale restaurant fare, and drinks (lots of sherry of course). Many of the casitas are sponsored by various groups of families, local businesses, bodegas, clubs, trade unions and political parties. Each tent is decorated with its own theme and most of them compete for the 1st prize award. The

municipal caseta is usually the largest and offers a fantastic programme of free entertainment. People eat, drink and dance sevillanas, rumbas, bulerias and other traditional dances in one of the beautifully decorated casitas (small bars) until the early hours of the morning with an incredible, enjoyable atmosphere that seems to transform the park into one big flamenco fiesta. A busy street market open day and night, a huge funfair which attracts both adults and children, bullfights, sevillana dance competitions and more fireworks are other festive activities that complete the programme of the Fair. A trip to 'The annual Jerez Horse Fair' should certainly be on the agenda not only of all horse lovers but also for anyone who wants to sample a taste of rural Spain at its very best. Organising ferias is one thing that the Spanish, and the Andalusians in particular excel at and the Feria de Caballo de Jerez is certainly no exception.

IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR OWNERS WITH PROPERTY FOR SALE OR LONG TERM RENT Certificados de Eficiencia Energéticas / Energy Performance Certificates

A

t Sunset Properties Spain www.sunsetpropertiesspain.com we have been advised of a new Royal Decree No. 235 which was formalised in Spain on 5 April 2013 and which will come into effect on 1 June 2013 requiring all property owners who have a property either for sale or for long term rent to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for their property. The introduction of EPCs in Spain comes as a result of the European Directive for the Energy Performance of Buildings which applies to all member states with a clearly defined timetable of the measures which must be introduced. An EPC comprises documents which indicate how energy efficient your property is and gives the property a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade from 'A' to 'G' where 'A' is the most efficient and 'G' is the least efficient. When you receive your EPC you will also be given a report with advice on how to improve the energy rating for your property. The report will recommend cost effective measures which could be undertaken to improve the energy rating of the property. Who needs an Energy Performance Certificate? After 1 June 2013 every domestic property for sale or long term rent needs to have an EPC. This

24 The Grapevine

applies to all properties currently for sale and those new to the market. However this does not apply to properties that are currently rented out on a long term basis as these will only require an EPC when a new tenancy is agreed. When this happens, the new tenant will have to be given a copy of the EPC. For anyone considering selling their property, the EPC needs to be in place before your property can be advertised for sale. Energy ratings will have to be displayed alongside your property information. When you sell your house the Notary will need the original certificate. How to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate for your property EPCs last for 10 years and can only be issued by certified and registered assessors including architects, technical architects and some engineers. The cost of the EPC depends on the size of your property – the larger your property, the more expensive the EPC will be – and it is the property owner who is responsible for paying for the certificate An energy assessor will visit your property to take measurements and recordings of: •air conditioning •hot water system •type of windows fitted •type of insulation •type of construction

These readings will then be entered online into one of the Government's approved programmes which will generate the rating for your property giving its energy efficiency and environmental impact. What happens if you do not obtain an Energy Performance Certificate The Government has indicated that fines ranging from €3,000 up to €600,000 will be levied on owners of property for sale and long term rent who do not comply with the new legislation. This applies to agents as well as private individuals. It is unclear at this stage how the new system will be regulated however inspections will be carried out by the 'competent body of the Autonomous Region'. Although the law is not due to come into effect until 1 June 2013, you can make the necessary arrangements now in order to guarantee that your EPC is in place by the due date. Contact us At Sunset Properties Spain we can recommend the services of a reputable local company who will carry out all the necessary paperwork for you. The cost of an EPC starts from €275 including I.V.A. Please contact Denise for further information either by telephone on 618 295 063 or by email info@sunsetproperties-spain.com

in severe pain. Because the chemotherapy treatment suppresses the immune system a common cold may turn into pneumonia and even a simple childhood illness, like Chicken Pox, may prove fatal. As part of the awareness raising campaign local school children have been invited to enter a special art competition. There will be prizes for the winners and their pictures will be displayed alongside those of the Sedella Art Group during the exhibition to be held during Sedella's summer fiesta.

THE SEDELLA ART GROUP CHILDREN GET ARTHRITIS TOO

T

the families of the children who are sufferers and an objective of the Sedella event is to raise awareness of the condition.

All proceeds from the sale will go to Moving4, the charity which supports children who suffer from Juvenile Arthritis in Spain, a little understood medical condition that causes chronic pain and rheumatoid arthritis in children and young people.

A family in Sedella has a 4 year old daughter who was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis when she was only 22 months old. Since the diagnosis she has undergone two operations in which she has had fluid drained from her knees and elbows; has had to take oral steroids to reduce inflamation; and has undergone a course of low dose chemotherapy. She has regular check ups at the Materno Infantil hospital in Málaga which include blood tests and scans.

he Art Group of Sedella is to organise a fundraising event to sell paintings, drawings, photographs and art cards during the summer fiesta that will take place in the village from July 28 until August 4.

Juvenile Arthritis is a disease of the autoimmune system that can cause blindness and which affects the joints, soft and connective tissue and which can also damage the major organs. There is no known cause and no cure and it currently affects around 2,000 children in Spain. The disease is little known and even less well understood outside

30 The Grapevine

Although there is no cure, the children who suffer from the condition can go into periods of remission and during those times they can be as physically active as any other child of the same age, however, they never know whether, on the next day, they will be in hospital, unable to move and

Elena, the spokesperson for the Sedella Art Group said "When the local school heard about our event they asked whether there was any way in which they could give their support. It is wonderful when children want to help other children and the competition is a creative and fun way for them to get involved." The fundraising event has the full support of the Alcalde of Sedella, José Antonio Gutiérrez Gutiérrez, the teniente Alcalde, Francisco Abolafio and the Ayuntamiento of Sedella as well as that of Moving4, the Spanish charity that supports research; the training of specialist doctors; the raising of awareness of the disease; and which gives much needed support to the families of children who suffer from Juvenile Arthritis in Spain. José Antonio Gutiérrez Gutiérrez, the Alcalde of Sedella, said 'We are very pleased to support the Art Group's efforts to raise both funds for and awareness of this distressing and potentially crippling disease." The organisers of the event would like to know of any other child sufferers of the illness who live within the province of Málaga.

THEY ARE BACK FOR THE SUMMER Acoustic Roots are back for the Summer

I

t doesn't seem like six months have passed since Acoustic Roots did their 'Farewell to Phil' concert in the Plaza in Competa. The Winter has flown by and for those who are wondering, it was me, Roger who dashed off to the Caribbean to renovate an old boat and play music with the locals. "(And it was me, Mitch, who had to stay here (there are worse places) through the long winter slaving away in the studio recording our backing tracks for the Summer. So when you see us next, you will be listening to us live but playing over our own various instruments and vocal harmony tracks. Even the piano, organ, strings and brass were created in the studio with a midi keyboard. Anyway back to Roger's ramblings...) " Three months of the trip have been spent cruising between the islands constantly seeking inspiration through the reggae rhythms pulsating across the white sand beaches and turquoise seas. There has been beer to be drunk, rum cocktails to be made, reefs to snorkel and passages to be sailed, but no one said it was

32 The Grapevine

going to be easy. "(huh!)" By the end of April I will be back in the studio with Mitch "(about time!)", who would have liked a trip aboard the ship, "(yes he would!)" now known as Mustang Sally, but who has had to spend many long hours during the Winter months "(see above)" compiling backing tracks and preparing material for three new CDs that will be released this Summer. In Blue Peter style: "(That's right Rog, we will have 3 CDs available, On The Road Again Again, is, as the name suggests an updated and remastered amalgamation of our first two CDs, Strangest Dream and On The Road Again. The second CD will be a compilation of our favourite early Beatles songs and the third one will be of various covers that we play live, over to Roger, or is that Roger Over)." We will continue to play the eclectic mix of music that has proved so popular over the past 5 years and look forward to seeing all of our friends and fans in the lovely bars and restaurants in the georgeous squares in and around

Canillas de Albaida and Competa. For our full list of Summer 2013 gigs and details of our new CDs visit our website: www.acousticroots.com where there is also a facility for you to be added to our mailing list. Also look out for our posters in the villages and listings in magazines and on Digame and Facebook. And we also have posters listing all the Summer's gigs at the following venues: In Canillas de Albaida: La Plaza Restaurante and Cerezo Bar y Restaurante. In Competa: Museo del Vino, Teteria Hierbabuena, La Casona, Pericos and La Cantina. us all. We would like to thank Gunila, Juan and Lisa at Naturvets for making old Hobo's final days as comfortable as they could be. On a more positive note, two more of the many dogs we rescued from Dee's house last year, Bertie and Papillon, are finally out of foster care and have found their permanent new families. Yay! There was another happy ending and fine example of what can be achieved when people work together, after we were notified of a terrified young dog who had been seen running around the outskirts of the village. She was finally captured in a magnificent team effort, headed by Lizzie Reilly, Magny Kristin Jonsdottir and Reynir Sigurasson and adopted by Lizzie's daughter Lana. Action for Animals will be covering the costs of neutering, vaccinations, microchip and passport for “Ginger. Thank you to everyone involved in giving her the promise of a great new life ahead.

I

T's almost time for Scruffs 2013! On Saturday May 11th Action for Animals will once again team up with the Pavo Real to bring you a fabulous fun-filled afternoon with our four-legged furry friends. Bring your dog along and you could win a trophy. But you don't have to bring a dog to join in the fun. There will be plenty more to enjoy, including the fabulous belly dancers from Benajarafe who delighted us all last year with their fantastic performance. Get there early or you'll miss them! Look for our full page advert in this edition of the Grapevine for more details of Scruffs. Last month we had happy times and sad times. We arranged for

an old dog who had been found living on the streets of Alhama de Granada, to be transported to Competa where locals Pete and Megan Furniss had very kindly agreed to give him a loving home for the rest of his days. On arrival, we quickly realised that he was quite poorly and needed veterinary attention. The Naturvets team worked around the clock, doing everything they possibly could to return him to good health. Unfortunately his Leishmaniasis test came back showing extremely high levels of the disease, together with severe anaemia and extensive liver and kidney damage. Sadly, there was nothing more that could be done for him and regretfully, the decision was made to put him to sleep. It was a very sad time for

We'd also like to thank the Competa CAMPO group for choosing Action for Animals as regular beneficiary of their excellent quiz nights held monthly at Bar Vendimia. If you haven't yet been to one, look out for the posters and come along. And finally, if the ineffable Kevin Deavin hasn't already charmed you into buying a raffle ticket (thank you Kevin!) they're also available at our shop on Avenida de la Constitucion 59, Competa. star so needed another path for his future. This meant he concentrated on his studies and went to Malaga University and gained a degree in Law. He carried on playing football until around two years ago which was when his son was born, as finding the time to play with a young family was difficult! However, he now likes nothing better than taking the weekend off with his family.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS GANT Thomas Gant Law

T

he entrance into Competa is no longer an empty unsightly concrete building that you race to get past before arriving into this lovely village. For, it is now taking shape with the arrival of new businesses and the influx of entrepreneurs and young professionals. One of these businesses and professionals is Thomas Gant, a Spanish Lawyer.

Thomas is half Danish and half Spanish and has been educated in both countries and as a result he is fluent in English, Danish and Spanish. His mother is from the village of Competa and his father from Denmark. He was born in Copenhagen and came back to Spain living first in Torre del Mar and then moving back to Competa. Here he stayed until his secondary education then moving back to Denmark to finish his schooling.

Thomas Gant Law is situated on the right-hand side on the approach into Competa. Thomas is a qualified lawyer and currently works between a firm of Lawyers in Nerja, where he has been for the last 5 years, and now his own premises in Competa. In the morning his wife Rocio “mans” the office and makes appointments for the afternoon for Thomas’s return from Nerja.

Although I hadn’t met Thomas formally before I had heard about him, mainly because of his reputation as a good footballer from my husband. This was indeed true as I learned he played professional football in Denmark within the first division and then later in Spain playing in the 2nd division. Thomas explained he realised he wasn’t going to be a

40 The Grapevine

On graduating from law school he found work in Nerja and continues to work with this firm whilst having his own premises in Competa. The official opening of the office is to be set for May where Thomas hopes to encourage people to pop in and meet him and see his office. He specialises in Inheritance, wills, property purchases, company incorporation's and taxes for both residents and non residents. He can also speak Swedish, Norwegian and German so advice can be given in your own language. Although he is a Spanish lawyer he understands how northern Europeans work and was educated in this way and will therefore grant a professional service. I personally noticed how professional he came across, courteous, well spoken and informative. I would feel very comfortable discussing important matters with him and asking for advice knowing it would be answered in an informed and appropriate way. He has lived in Competa for years and has contacts locally for example within the Town Hall. He also works outside of Competa so his experience and knowledge extends further than just the village. These are all important factors that also contribute to Thomas Gant Law being a credible and reliable firm. Please call in for an appointment or call Thomas on 620814137

settled and his dentistry hours in each clinic are now more stable . He is keen to welcome back many of his old clients who visited him in Puente don Manuel. He believes the 3 clinics now provide better access point for his clients. He was aware that he had built up a good reputation in Puente and people came to him from the coast and other inland villages. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Asun Roses

A

couple of months back I wrote about cistus and, with summer now approaching rapidly, I thought it would be useful to look at another member of the cistaceae family, the aptly named sun rose or helianthemum.

46 The Grapevine

The original wild plant is helianthemumnummularium, found in the Mediterranean area, single and white flowering. But breeders have been busy and there are now some 200 species available in many colours ranging through yellow, peach, orange, pinks, red and

purple – some bearing blotches or streaks and with double or semi-double flowers. The name helianthemumstems from the Greek, heliosmeaning sun and anthemonmeaning flower. Most are evergreen with a few listed as semi-evergreen.

They form low spreading subshrubs, many having attractive frosted looking grey leaves. All prefer dry sunny habitats and will grow on poor stony ground, slightly alkaline – just like our gardens! The greyer the leaf, the more drought tolerant they are though all will welcome an occasional soaking in hot summer weather. They are extremely cold hardy and will tolerate exposed coastal positions too with salt spray. Height will vary up to a maximum of 30cm but many are ground-hugging, especially in dryer conditions, and a typical spread would be around 0.5m. Flowers are prolifically produced during spring and early summer and, once this flush has finished, trim the plant back by about one third (these cuttings can be potted up and used to increase your stock) to keep it fresh and encourage a second flush of foliage and flowers. Each flower will only last a day but there are plenty of them, often covered in bees and butterflies because they are very nectar rich. In very sunny positions, flower colour can become a little faded but, often, this adds to their charm, their silky softness has a luminous quality that greatly enhances their appeal. They are commonly used in rockeries or draping over a wall but they are also great groundcover plants for hot banks and pretty little pot plants too. They combine well with traditional herbs such as lavender and rosemary. Disease and pest resistant, the one thing that might kill your plants is prolonged wet conditions and especially if water-logged. I know that, over the years, I've been asked a lot for this little

treasure of a plant and I've never been able to find a Spanish supplier. But just so you know that I do listen to you all, we've grown some ourselves this year, mixed colours, so we do have a limited supply and it is something that I hope to expand upon in subsequent years. By the time this goes to press, my new book will be available – at last! Entitled Citrus, the Zest of Lifeit covers grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, mandarin, citron & the 'quat' family.Juicy Bits, Fruity Varieties and To the Pith – from seed to old age – how to select, grow, look after and harvest your fruits. Diseases, Insect Plagues, Fertilisation, Irrigation, Propagation, Pruning, Rootstocks, the History, Geography and the Future. It's all in there and I hope you'll all find it very useful. It will be available, initially, at the Garden Centre and on-line through our web page.

Summer Hours: June, July, September, 9 – 2, closed for August. Winter Hours :October to May 10 – 4 Always closed Sundays and Mondays. Tel: 689928201 Email: florenaspain@hotmail.com Webpage: www.viverosflorena.com See us on Facebook – Lorraine Cavanagh's Garden Centre and we'll be at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show at Algorfa, Costa Blanca 29th and 30th May.

The opening of the Sebastian Chavos’s new second hand shop in Algarrobo Costa.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SEBASTIAN CHAVOS Construcciones S. Chavos SL opens a second hand shop on the coast 1. Why are you opening another second hand shop up on the coast? To extend the business after seeing that there is a demand for this type of product. 2. Why did you choose Algarrobo as the site for the new shop? We think that this area will be a good commercial area in the future as it has 3 of the major supermarkets around it – Mercadona, Lidl & Aldi. We had looked at other areas and locals but this seemed to the best. 3.Is it manned all day or by appointment only? The shop is open 6 days a week, Mon-Fri 10-2pm & 5-9pm and Saturdays 10-2pm. There are friendly staff who speak English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German and of course Spanish there to help all our customers.

to Competa? Yes we are always looking for new stock, if anyone has items they wish to be removed or sell they just have to call us and we will come and have a look at what they have and we will be happy to make a deal. We cover the whole province of Malaga all the way along the coast and have even travelled to Granada to collect items. We are also interested in the stock of shops that are having to close down. 5. What items sell quickly in the shop? All items that are of good quality, especially the large furniture and the electrical appliances. 6. What are the most unusual items you have for sale at the moment? One of the most unusual is a confession chamber or wooden telephone cabin, depending on how you look at it!

recently to avoid having to lay off staff we having been looking at other avenues of work to branch into. 8.Does the construction business fit well with having the second hand Shops? Yes it does, it also gives us some new contacts for building or house reforms and it is a way of expanding our cliental. 9.What other Services does your company provide? Anything that is related to construction such as Plumbing, Electrical work, Carpentry, Swimming Pools, Cleaning, Landscape Gardens, Painting etc.. 10. Have you plans to open up any more shops in another location? Not at the moment, but that depends on whether the crisis continues. If the Construction side of the business continues to weaken then we will have to think of other things we can do to maintain our workforce.

A small selection of properties presented to you from local estate agents in this area.

IF I WERE FAMOUS. By Andy Wilkes

O

f course the local fame I enjoy as the Grapevine's leading 47 year-old scribe named Andy Wilkes that lives in Cómpeta comes with its up and down sides. One down-side being that I tend to end up writing a lot of true stories that do not make me look like the cool, fun-to-be-with guy that I strive to be. Sometimes when I write an article I feel like I am in a barber's chair; am I the only person that sits down for a haircut and within 5 minutes tells a complete stranger my whole life story including the curse of my terrible flatulence and why I can no longer eat cucumbers? No? It must just be me then.

60 The Grapevine

Maybe that is why many Grapevine readers cross the road when they see me walking towards them. But if I was famous, really famous it would all be different. The world of fame is a fickle one so I would cash-in and not turn down any work, be it advertising, voice-overs or film parts. So you would have to get used to seeing my picture on billboards as the face of Fray Bentos pies or Peter Storm cagoules. Such exposure would then surely lead to me being hounded and eventually wooed by supermodels such as Kate Moss or Yasmin LeBon. If the present Mrs Wilkes is reading el

this, I just want you to know this is not wishful thinking here; I am just preparing you for the inevitable. This would lead to me having to leave my home in Cómpeta as, quite frankly I would not feel comfortable having a coffee in the main square whilst being stared at by my ex-wife and a gaggle of paparazzi photographers. I would still retain a house in Cómpeta but would buy places in London, Rome and Clacton (which according to the PR is “a great British day out in Essex!”). Well I don't mind trying life in the fast lane. When it came to my car(s) l however, life would be in the fast

To advertise call 637 028 873

lane – god I'm good. Do you see what I did there? - I won't bore you with a list of cars, let's just say fast, slick and with one of those coloured a sun strips with 'Andy' on the driver's side and 'Yasmin/Kate' on the other. On second thoughts maybe I will have 'TBC' on the passenger's side just to keep my women on their toes. I have often seen current so-called famous people such as Simon Cowell in his Bugatti Veyron (I think he has a Smart car now the loser) leaving a night club driving through a crowd of photographers totally ignoring their pleas for him to stop so they can snap a few photos. I would not do this, I would like to be an accessible superstar so much so that I would allow fans to come to my house on a Sunday to actually see, touch and wash my car for me. I think giving something back to the fans is very

To advertise call 637 028 873

important. I would not rule out film work; after a few years or so in the gym, and maybe some plastic surgery (face, pectoral impants etc) I could be the new James Bond. This isn't as crazy as it sounds; I already have my own dinner suit and can say “Miss Moneypenny” in a passable Sean Connery accent. In fact maybe I could write the story and sing the theme tune as well and save the producers a few bob. After a while I can see that being famous would start being tedious so I would drop out of the public eye to pursue a few personal ambitions. One current star I envy is musician and Alex James who after his success with pop group Blur went on to become a cheese maker winning the prestigious Best

Goats Cheese at the 2008 British Cheese Awards. I know what you are thinking; cheese making is not very rock 'n' roll or glamorous but I love cheese and this is my fantasy so tough. I know that all things must come to an end and the press love to build up stars before knocking them down. Eventually the story about me, the contortionist and the balloon modeller will be leaked to the press by an Accident and Emergency nurse trying to make a quick buck.I will just have to hope that all of my tireless work for charity will hold me in good stead and that Kate/Yasmin will stand by me. If they do not, oh well, there are plenty more supermodels in the sea. Or failing that there is always the lady on the cheese counter in Eroski.

s we get older the body’s tissues and organs start to work less efficiently. We have to work harder and harder to stay fit and active. But keeping well is also about anticipating what’s increasingly likely to go wrong, and taking steps to prevent harmful events from happening. This may mean not just eating the right foods and taking regular exercise, but also changing your living environment and watching out for possible dangers. Preventative tactics are particularly important because our health doesn’t just decline in a gradual way. Instead what’s often more important is a step-by-step decline on top of a slow deterioration in health. Every so often we have a major illness or event from which we never quite recover to previous levels of fitness. The most common causes include: Infections. Broken bones. Cancers. Conditions or diseases requiring an operation. As we get older we have more and more of these acute episodes of illness and drop further and further back down the scale of general health. If we could dodge the

64 The Grapevine

acute illness we could stay well for longer even as ageing takes a general toll. A healthy lifestyle for the elderly Following a healthy lifestyle is important at every age and the usual rules apply for the elderly too. A balanced diet with lots of protein, fresh fruit and veg (especially for fibre and vitamins) is important for: 1.Maintaining muscle and bone strength. 2.Keeping a healthy immune system. 3.Normal bowel activity 4.Many other body functions that can deteriorate as the years go by. Vitamins and minerals for the elderly The benefits of taking vitamin and mineral supplements are controversial. If your diet isn’t good, you may want to consider a general multivitamin every day. There are plenty of other supplements you can try (depending on what you perceive your health issues to be) and some do have some research evidence behind them – for example zinc may reduce the length of symptoms of a cold and can help improve wound healing. But always be wary that you may be spending your money

pointlessly. Keeping mobile as you get older Keeping mobile is a key aspect of keeping healthy in older age and daily exercise is essential. The longer you’re able to get yourself up and about with ease, whether to get out and socialise or even just visit the toilet, the longer you’re likely to remain independent and well. This doesn’t mean a session of aerobics or a marathon run (unless you still like to do these) - any exercise which gets you up on your feet and bearing the weight of your own body will help to keep the muscles active, bones strong and maintain core strength and balance. Join an exercise group for older people in your local gym if you need ideas or guidance. Falls in the elderly Falling over is a common problem in older people and one of the main reasons for a step down in health. The greatest risk is a broken bone. A hip fracture for example, can taken a massive toll on future independence – one in five people who break their hip die within four months and nearly half those who survive then need to go into some sort of residential or nursing care home. Working on muscle strength and balance can help reduce the

risk of falls. Other important strategies include making the home safe by removing trip objects such as loose carpets, putting in rails or adapting and securing furniture. Alcohol shouldn’t be forgotten too – it's not just the young who can drink more than is good for them and older people may find it takes only one or two drinks to lose balance, strength and judgement. And if you’re a smoker it’s never too late to reap the benefits of stopping. Preventing infections in the elderly From our late 50s onwards the risk of infections rises rapidly as the normal balance of activity in the immune system is lost. Fewer and fewer cells are available to recognise and fight new infections leading to many chronic diseases and aggravating the ageing process. So it becomes vital to avoid infections as far as possible, or get treatment swiftly when they do occur. Steer clear of people with flu, colds or stomach upsets and wash your hands regularly to reduce the chances of picking up micro-organisms through contact. Make sure that any food you eat has been cooked thoroughly. If you’re prone to urinary tract infections try to drink plenty of fluids to keep the urinary tract flushed through (thirst can decline as we age and many older people tend towards slight dehydration especially if they have problems with continence and want to avoid endless trips to the toilet). We‘re all familiar with the importance of childhood vaccinations but there's a move now to look at vaccinating people throughout their life and in particular increase the use of vaccination in older age to prevent problems such as pneumonia or shingles. Your GP can tell you more about what vaccines are available for older people.

Cancer risk in the elderly The immune system also helps to guard us from cancer, as its cells patrol the body looking for abnormal or cancerous cells. Cells become cancerous as they gather more and more genetic mutations, which eventually enable them to break free from normal controls on growth and start multiplying. As mutations accumulate with time so cancer increases with age – just at the point when the immune system is becoming less efficient at dealing with cancerous cells. Being vigilant for the symptoms of cancer is really important, because most tumours are more treatable the earlier they are caught. So learn what to look out for, such as: Unexplained weight loss. The appearance of lumps and bumps. Changes in bowel habit. Urinary problems. Remember to get advice swiftly rather than just hoping the problem will go away.

stress in your life. Focus on good relationships and try to move on from the bad ones. Research has shown that optimists live as much as eight years longer than average, while people who are part of a strong faith group or other local supportive community (including large helpful families) tend to have less chronic debilitating disease, live longer lives and score higher on tests of quality of life. Do what you can to get a good night’s sleep – disturbed nights significantly interfere with brain performance and increase the risk of problems such as trips and falls. The sooner that you can get back onto your feet and into action again after an illness the more likely you are to make a full recovery. Of course, many factors will be beyond your control, but willpower and determination undoubtedly can help you feel more positive, so pull out all the stops and take advice and support from others wherever you can.

Screening is routinely offered for a number of cancers such as breast, cervical and bowel cancer so make sure you get yourself screened if you can.

Looking after your senses as you get older Hang on to your senses for as long as possible – they keep you upright, safer, better nourished and able to fight off disease:

Unfortunately many screening programmes leave out the elderly (the argument is often that it‘s not so economically viable to screen older people, even though most cancers are much more common the older you get). But you may still be able to request some tests from your doctor. For example routine breast cancer screening stops in women at the age of 70, but you’re still allowed to go and request a mammogram after that age.

Look after your teeth with regular brushing and dental check-ups (older people often cope poorly with false teeth and end up on a less nutritious diet). Get your eyes and hearing tested regularly and use glasses or hearing aids as recommended – if you don’t like them or have problems, go back to where you bought them and get it sorted. Work on your balance with advice from a gym coach or physio.

Keeping positive as you get older Keeping in good spirits and staying optimistic helps keep you generally well and recover faster from illness, so find ways to actively identify and deal with

With a bit of work you can not only live longer but increase the chances that those extra years give you the best quality of life possible.

ALMERÍA: ANDALUCÍA'S SPAGHETTI WESTERN PROVINCE The remarkable locations of Almería in Andalucía

I

n Andalucía, Almería’s desert is a movie star, while the city is gloriously atmospheric. Did you realise that Europe’s only desert is in Andalucía? Clint Eastwood, Peter O’Toole and Harrison Ford certainly know this. Spaghetti westerns were so called because director Sergio Leone was Italian, but perhaps they should have been named paella westerns because several were filmed in Almería - in the

68 The Grapevine

Desert of Tabernas, to be precise. The “badlands” of Spain proved an ideal body-double for America’s Wild West in such movies as For A Few Dollars More, which starred a young Mr Eastwood. Leone, though, had been beaten to Almería by David Lean, who filmed parts of Lawrence of Arabia, with O’Toole, in the province - though it was some time before Steven Spielberg brought Harrison Ford to lm

Tabernas to film chunks of the adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Among the crumbly, crumpled landscape of the desert, where trumpeter finches and lizards flit among the otherworldly ravines and cliffs, the legacy is there in several old western film sets, carefully recreated or restored and with re-enactments of street shoot-outs held daily. Even if you’re not a big fan of westerns, a visit is great family fun and the gunfight re-

enactments are admirably convincing. Heading east from the “West”, the wildness continued. Take a small side-road across the Karst en Yesos de Sorbas natural area - a cave-riddled gypsum landscape of tiny table mountains and more ravines quite unlike anything you might have seen before in Spain; same as Sorbas, an age-worn town huddled along the top of a cliff above another strange split in the earth. Then follow the trail of Lean, Leone and Spielberg down to the far south-east corner of Iberia, where brown, misshapen mountains slope steeply into the sea in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park. The rugged valleys and fabulous soft-sand beaches that are the park’s hallmarks were also used as backdrops to the directors’ films. Few roads penetrate a wilderness that is arid yet home to several rare plant species. On the western side of the peninsula you can spot distant pink blobs flamingoes - on the vast salt lakes. Looping round to the east, call in at the appealing seaside village of San José. This is the place to stay if you want to attempt the gratifying walk to the lonely lighthouse at “land’s end”, although the allure of Los Genoveses beach a short distance along the path may well curtail your hike. A string of tiny villages spot this coast, with Agua Amargo perhaps the prettiest. A short hop over a ridge is rewarded with a panorama of a marvellous golden strand, the Playa de los Muertos - half a mile long and backed by cliffs. Completely undeveloped and often barely a soul in sight out of season.

Heading north, the road turns inland and upwards as some formidable coastal mountains blocked its path. The next few miles prove a rollercoaster drive to cut across this lonely corner of Spain before civilisation returs, rather suddenly, in the shape of Mojàcar Playa, an easy-going resort that is pasted along several miles of excellent sandy beach. Tthe old village of Mojacar viewed from the beach, appears like a dollop of cream on a hill, its white-cube buildings spilling down the sides. Up in one of its old squares, the vistas stretch along the coast and far to the north. The provincial capital of Almería is one of the least-visited of Spain’s coastal cities - a powerful reason f take a look! The city is overwhelmed by its gigantic, 1,000-year-old Moorish castle, the Alcazaba - second in size in Andalucía after Granada’s mighty Alhambra. At dusk wander behind its wellpreserved walls to inspect the three distinct enclosures - two of Muslim design and one of Christian origin, added later. Descending from the castle past the huge and rather sternlooking medieval cathedral into the modern shopping boulevard of Paseo de Almería, a sharp contrast to the tranquillity of the castle’s courtyards. Dipping down an alley and you are quickly back in old Almería, an experience made all the more authentic by Bodega Las Botas, a gloriously atmospheric place with hanging hams and sherrybarrel tables. This would make a great movie set too!

THE THEME PARKS Mini Hollywood Mini Hollywood is the longest established of three theme parks existing in the area. The other two 'Western Leone' and 'Texas Hollywood' are still part-time working film locations. MiniHollywood is now entirely given over to the theme-park business and provides a variety of attractions, which include, a twice daily simulation of a spectacular Wild West gunfight when bandits ride into town to hold up the bank. The other main attraction is a excellent zoo which has a good selection of animals including, tigers and Siberian red, white rhinos, giraffes, coatis, otters, African gazelles, along with birds, reptiles and insects. The theme park also includes film and car museums, a swimming pool, a parrot show, a salon where you can see a 'can can show' and the usually selection of restaurants, gift shops and ice cream outlets. Texas Hollywood Texas Hollywood is located close to Mini Hollywood, 25 kilometers north of Almeria City on the A340. The film set continues to make films but also offers visitors the opportunity to stroll around the film sets which include a Mexican Village, an Indian Village and a typical America Wild West Town complete with a saloon, a jail, shops, a bank and stables with horses and authentic stagecoaches. Western Leone: Western Leone owes its name to the Italian film director Sergio Leone who turned the Almeria landscape into a film location. Leone films included his epic Western 'Once Upon A Time In The West' (1968) starring Claudia Cardinale and the legendary Henry Fonda, as well as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and source: pintprice.com Treasure Island.

CHICKEN SATAY WITH PEANUT SAUCE RECIPE Recipe by Andy Wilkes, Sugar and Spice and www.ingredient.es

T

hese succulent chicken kebabs originate from south-east Asia but this recipe was given to us by fellow C贸mpeta inhabitant Debbie Atkinson. This is probably the best chicken satay I have eaten (not including in Thailand or various Thai restaurants) Serves 8 900g 2lb skinless boneless chicken breast, cut into strips Marinade 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tsp tamarind paste 1 tsp minced lemon grass 2 garlic cloves crushed 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tbsp lime juice 1tsp soft brown sugar

80 The Grapevine

Peanut Sauce 2 tbsp smooth peanut butter 200ml 7fl oz coconut cream or milk 2tsp of Thai red curry or matsaman curry paste 1tbsp Thai fish sauce 1 tbsp soft light brown sugar 1.Thread the chicken onto skewers (if wooden soak them in water so they do nut burn). 2.To make the marinade, place the oil, soy sauce, tamarind paste, lemon grass, garlic, cumin, coriander, lime juice and sugar in a food processor and blend to make a paste. Transfer to a bowl. 3. Add the chicken to the marinade and toss to coat.

5. To make peanut sauce, place the peanut butter, coconut milk/cream, curry paste, fish sauce and sugar in a saucepan. 6. Heat gently, stirring to form a smooth sauce. 7. Remove from the heat and reserve. 8. Pre-heat the grill or barbeque. 9. Cook the chicken under the hot grill or over hot coals for 3-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. 10. Re-heat the sauce, adding a little hot water if necessary and serve with the chicken.

4. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 1 hour to marinade.

ES K JO

I sat down and said, "It was the most amazing experience of my entire life.”

As I was climbing into the new bed I bought us, my wife snarled at me and turned the other way. I think she's just jealous I got the top bunk.

"I see you've woken up on the wrong side of the bed," said my wife.

Pack your bags! I phoned my wife today and said, "Pack a bag dear, I've booked us into a hotel for a few nights."

One by one, all of my best mates have started to become interested in men as well as women.

"Ooh, why's that?" she asked. I said, "Well I've been playing poker all day, havent I!" "Really?" she asked again in excitement, "How much have you won?" "Nothing," I replied. "I've lost the house.”

So I'm just sitting here, watching the world go bi.

My wife packed my bags today after finding out that I had a one night stand with another woman.

"Shut up," I replied, "and get this mattress off me.” Apparently, you can only say: "Look at you! You got so big!" to children... Old girlfriends tend to get offended. The man who invented Velcro has died. RIP.

"I want you to go!" she screamed. I was on holiday in the alps when I saw a sign saying Ski Hire.

I said, "Please can we just talk about it first?"

So I went a bit further up the slope.

"Go on, I'm listening." she replied.

SOHA A meeting was held between representatives of SOHA (Save Our Homes Axarquía) and the Junta de Andalucía resulted in a step forward for owners of illegal properties in the area. The association, which is formed by some 400 foreign residents who built homes with municipal planning permission, has reported that the secretary general for Territorial Planning at the regional Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, Gloria Vega, has agreed to study their proposals.

At the meeting the association put forward the situation of its members, who built properties with a licence from the local town hall and always respected the plans handed in to the local authority. They argue that they should not be penalised for the fact that the local authorities granted the permission against planning regulations which led to the Junta de Andalucía later revoking the licences.
