NEWS IN SPAIN This months update
A
widely criticised restoration of an ancient Spanish castle has won a prestigious international architecture prize. The five-year refurbishment of Matrera castle, a 1,000-year-old fortress near Cádiz, was the focus of a bitter clash between traditionalists and modernists. Its dilapidated structure was shored up and returned to its original dimensions in a project many saw as a botched attempt to impose a modernist white cube on the original fabric. However, the project was shortlisted in the global Architizer A+ awards and on Tuesday it won the popular vote in the architecture and preservation category. Carlos Quevedo, the architect who oversaw the project, expressed his delight at the prize. He will travel to New York next month to collect the award. “We are very happy,” “I am proud of the work we’ve done and we want to celebrate. It is very important for us because it a recognition for all the work we have done over five years.” Quevedo said he respected the opinions of those who criticised the project, but suggested they were upset by change. “People have different aesthetic opinions,” he said. “We were sure of the work we did. The critics didn’t like the change to the monument … Many have been negative, but architects – not only from Spain, but internationally – have sent me messages saying

the project is good.”

anks including Barclays and Santander face a €5bn (£4bn) bill after a Spanish court ruled that millions of fixed minimum rate mortgages were null and void because of the “lack of transparency” in the way they were sold during the property boom. The ruling in a Madrid commercial court comes in response to a class action suit on behalf of 15,000 mortgage holders. The mortgages contain what is known as a cláusula suelo, which fixes a minimum monthly payment. So, while still a variable rate mortgage, the bank sets a cut-off point below which payments are not allowed to fall. Some 40 banks are involved, including Caixabank, Barclays, Bankia, and Banco Santander. Caixabank and Bankia abolished cláusula suelo mortgages last year. The decision was anticipated by the banking sector and many have already made provisions for a payout. They have 20 days to appeal against the ruling.

pain’s Tax Agency is targeting the owners of apartments who placed rental ads last year – including those on specialized websites such as Airbnb – in a crackdown on unreported income. With the 2015 income tax drive now officially underway, taxpayers who use the new online tax filing
program, Renta Web, may find the following message on their computer screen: “According to data in the Tax Agency’s power, you have placed property rental ads in various media, including the internet.” The note is a reminder that any income from such rentals must be declared, in the same way as income from foreign pension schemes or other foreign assets.This is not the first time Spain’s taxman has gone after undeclared income from property rental. The agency’s management director, Rufino de la Rosa, has not explained how the Tax Agency has obtained rental data, noting only that popular real estate websites such as Idealista or Airbnb are not providing information to the authorities. pain’s former prime minister José María Aznar has been ordered to pay almost €270,000 (£214,000) in fines and back taxes after allegedly billing personal income to his family business. Aznar, a key figure in the conservative People’s party which he helped to found and led for 13 years, was prime minister from 1996 to 2004. He was fined €70,403 and required to pay a further €199,052 in back taxes after inspectors concluded that in his returns for 2011-12 he had wrongly claimed income against Famaztella, the family business he runs with his wife, Ana Botella, the former mayor of Madrid. The tax rate for business is 25%, whereas if it had been declared as personal income it would be closer to 50%. The tax minister, Cristóbal Montoro, declined to comment on the affair. However, a source in the tax inspectorate told the Guardian that details of a leak initially reported by the online news site OKdiario were correct.

basket and we waited for Sandiey to arrive. They were totally bedraggled, wet and freezing cold and we were doubtful if they'd survive the night. Sandiey arrived with her cat carrier, complete with cosy blankets and hot water bottle and we gently transferred them into a warmer environment. Her work had begun.
ACTION FOR ANIMALS Good News and Bad news

ast month I wrote about our visit to Cómpeta's local school, Candido Lara, where Action for Animals and Naturvets gave a presentation to the children to explain the importance of caring for animals.

Since the presentation, the children have been busy fundraising. Together with the teachers, they organised a second-hand market where they each brought various unwanted items into school to sell and raise money for the animals. This was followed by a "mini march" around the village where they rattled their collection boxes and encouraged local people to donate for the animals. During the recent Cómpeta Art Walk some of the children even sold their
On a less cheerful note, we were informed of a plastic bag full of newborn kittens which had been dumped next to a local rubbish bin. One of our volunteers, Elaine Greer, went to the scene and scooped them up in the hope they could be saved. I quickly rang Sandiey, our experienced Chief Kitten Nurturer, who willingly offered to look after them in the absence of their mother. Elaine brought the five fragile little kittens into the village in her best laundry

Sadly, before the evening was over, two kittens died. They'd been so cold and weak, they'd had no chance. By the following morning another had died. Sandiey had been up with them all night, trying to raise their body temperatures and coax them into taking some kitten milk, but all her hard work had been in vain and she was absolutely distraught. She'd done everything she possibly could, but the heartless person who'd dumped them had given them little chance of survival. There were only two left. As I write this, a week later, just one kitten remains alive. Sandiey is doing a brilliant job and thankfully, this last one seems to be thriving. I hope by the time you read this article our last little kitten is still alive. Please help us to stop this kind of needless suffering and cruelty. Action for Animals offers free neutering, so there's absolutely no reason for unwanted kittens to be abandoned in such an inhumane way. MENU DEL DIA Good Food at Reasonable Prices
Y
ou can enjoy a three course meal with wine for the price of a snack, if you know these magic words; Menu del Dia, which means simply Menu of the Day. Traditionally served between two and three in the afternoon by just about every restaurant in Spain, this afternoon delight is a great way to eat good food at a very reasonable price. It all started during Franco’s time as a way for workers to obtain a nutritious meal at an affordable price. Franco has gone, but thankfully Menu del Dia lives on, and is in fact as popular as ever, but you have to know about it to get it. Some restaurants advertise their Menu of the Day on a chalk board outside the establishment, whilst others will happily bring you the normal menu without mentioning the cheap option. Of course the standard menu may have a list of dishes as long

as your arm, whereas the fare on offer for Menu of the Day may only provide a choice of three or four dishes for each course, but there’s usually something there to suit everyone. Let’s get one thing straight here; the food is not inferior or in any way less nutritious than what’s being offered from the main menu. The difference is the price, and I promise you, I’ve never walked away from a Menu del Dia feeling hungry; quite the contrary in fact. Don’t forget that these meals were meant to feed the workers, and still do, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself surrounded by a group of Spanish taking their lunch break. A popular first course is a really tasty soup or a salad, but dishes are as diverse as the restaurants which offer them, so there won’t be a problem finding something you like. A Chinese restaurant will have its own particular version, as will an Italian or
Indian, but most Spanish bars and restaurants stick to what they know the locals will enjoy. Chicken, fish, meatballs or pork usually come with chips, but that’s no different to the main menu. There’s usually the choice of a pudding or coffee, but if you want to pay extra, you can have both. Although Menu del Dia is available nationwide, the cheapest place, according to the Organisation of Consumers and Users, is Malaga, which weighed in with an average price of €7.55 which is pretty good value for a hearty meal. The only problem with Menu del Dia is that you probably won’t want to eat a big meal in the evening, which could spoil your restaurant plans, but if you’re happy to eat your main meal in the middle of the day, and are looking to save money, it’s made for you,

MADRID, CAPITAL OF SPAIN The history and orientation
T
he city of Madrid is located on the Castilian plain or meseta (center of Spain). It was initially settled by the Moors around 852 AD. The Moors first built an alcazar (or fortress) with the intention of protecting themselves from the Christian forces coming from the north. According to a general belief, they chose this specific location because of the Manzanares stream that offered a rich water supply. The city’s name, Madrid, is believed to be derived from the Arabic word for “source of water” or “stream”.

skyscrapers from the 1900s, continuing to the beautiful Plaza de Espana, decorated with the same skyscrapers from the late 1950s. If we leave the center and head north, along the shady and heavily circulated Paseo de la Castellana, we will encounter a number of modern buildings, like the Tores Kio for example. The Tores Kio is located at the Plaza de Castilla. We can see another remarkable building, the Terminal 4, located at Madrid’s Barajas Airport. The Terminal 4 was designed by Estudio Lamala and the Richard Rogers Partnership, in Madrid. The newer buildings of Madrid may not be as interesting as the ones presented for the average tourist. I’M OFF AGAIN - WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN ME? Maggie Woodward
I
f you’re reading this on the day of issue (1 May) I will have been walking along my latest Camino de Santiago for the last eight days. This year my camino takes me along the north coast of Spain, from the French border, following the Camino del Norte from Irun to Ribadeo (625 kms), then I go ‘off camino’ and continue to follow the coast for a further 200 kms until I reach Ferrol and join a different pilgrimage route, appropriately called the Ingles, for 120 kms into Santiago de Compostela. If I have made good time and stuck to my walking schedule I will have been walking for 35 days and will have time to walk on to Finisterre and Muxia a further 120 kms, before returning to Santiago and flying home at the very end of May. This is a stunningly beautiful hike with the coastline to the right and mountains to the left. On many occasions it trails across beaches, at other times it’s necessary to take a ferry across a port or the mouth of a river. It passes through some really interesting towns and cities and the region as a whole is renowned for its fabulous food. There are a lot of ups and downs, particularly during the first week and it is considered one of the most strenuous caminos. I seem to have been preparing for this camino forever, but I am

feeling totally unprepared. I have plotted my route, downloaded GPS tracks and investigated accommodation possibilities where albergues are not available. A complete day has been spent weighing gear, decanting products into small travel bottles and winding a supply of loo roll for those occasions when someone beat me to it. And I have taken many long training walks in the mountains, some happily alone and others in the company of great friends. This is my fourth camino and you might expect that I would take it all in my stride (pun intended), but I’ve been experiencing many waking hours in the middle of the night and my poor brain is jumping around with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The adrenaline will be pumping just as much on this camino as it was on my first. I am expecting to encounter some serious weather of the wet variety - northern Spain doesn’t get to be so green and pleasant without a very good watering system. And Galicia, where I will be spending fifteen of my forty walking days is renowned for its rainfall. 2016 has been deemed a ‘Extraordinary Year of Mercy’ by Pope Francis. This means that the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela will be
opened to receive the faithful who will then be forgiven even the most serious of sins. The Holy Door in Santiago is normally only opened when St James’ day (25 July) falls on a Sunday and this brings a surge of pilgrims to the city. So this special year of mercy is expected to create a very busy year on the camino, although I’m hoping that there won’t be too many extra pilgrims walking on my route - I really prefer a bit of solitude. As usual, my partner David will be collecting sponsorship funds for charity, and this year we have again chosen CUDECA cancer hospice and Save the Children. Last year we collected a magnificent sum of around 1,300 euros from our wonderful friends and neighbours - so if you see David approaching in Cómpeta or Canillas, don’t run and hide - let’s see if we can beat last year’s amazing result. o matter which season you choose for travelling, there is nothing more delightful than a Spanish vacation. Firstly, it would help provide inexpensive accommodation to travellers in remote areas. Secondly, it would keep all the run-down monuments and historic buildings in good condition which would otherwise be left to fall apart. You can call it an irony of fate, but nowadays paradors are respectable high-standard hotels with all mod cons. They preserve their previous elegance and at the same time ensure your absolute comfort.
The Spanish parador is also where you will discover Spanish cuisine of the highest calibre. So, if you like to be pampered and realise that staying at one of Spanish paradors is just what you have always wanted, the next step is deciding what kind of parador will make the most of your holidays. Below are just a few of the many options available to tourists. The Electoral Commission has launched a global campaign to encourage an estimated five million Britons living overseas to check their eligibility to vote ahead of the referendum on EU membership. The Foreign Office is supporting the campaign overseas, including in Spain. The British Ambassador Simon Manley, visiting Malaga on Tuesday (23 February), said: Whether you think the UK should remain in or leave the EU, the 23rd of June will be your chance to have your say. This is a oncein-a-generation opportunity for the British people to decide.

Birds Millions of birds fly from Africa to Europe each spring: we are on the flight path. Skies over the towns are full of swallows and swifts while the house martins are renovating their mud nests on our buildings. The raptors are back, too: you will see eagles, buzzards and falcons if you look about. Try spotting Willow Warbler, Chiff-Chaff, Sardinian Warbler, Spotted flycatcher, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Northern Wheatear, Meadow Pipit, Hoopoe, Bee-eaters, Booted Eagles, Snake Eagles. Listen out for the Melodious Warbler and the Cuckoo.

he Axarquia is a wildlife paradise. There's little intensive farming, limited industry, lots of wild land and a gentle climate. May is mid spring and all nature knows it: if you are a wildlife lover get out of doors and look about. Here are some of the things you might want to keep an eye out for. Flowers April and May are poppy-time – you find them scattered about banks, sometimes a rag-tag few, sometimes a field-full that wants to be a Van Gogh painting with all that implausible colour crying out to be seen. In the Natural Park you see the white flowering

asphodel and masses of pink rock-roses. You may see late orchids; pink butterfly orchids or the sawfly orchid. In fact flora is everywhere, bursting out of every bit of rough ground, from the dramatic Giant Fennel to the tiny blue pimpernel. Look for Convolvulus, Morning Glory, Spanish Vetchling, Small Tree Mallow, False Sowthistle, Smooth Hawksbit, Musk Storksbill, Blue Alkanet and Borage. Beetles, Butterflies, Bugs Butterflies are pretty but I'm as fond of the bugs and beetles you find among the flowers. Even the beetles I see bravely rolling dung-balls backwards on the dirt tracks (as if they just can't face
Beasts I see more reptiles from this time on because of the warmth; lizards sit out on the sandy paths in the morning to warm up; geckos climb walls, stalking the mosquitoes the lights attract. You might, if you are lucky, see a young chameleon. As for mammals, if you go walking you may well see Ibex – the mountain goat. But the main mammal I start seeing more of is the humble bat. That may be because there are more insects with the rising warmth – or it may be that I am out at dusk more often in May than in March. Take for example the Chapel called ‘lady of flower’, built in the 16th century, which houses the image of the ‘virgin of flowers’. This Chapel in Alora receives a large number of tourists every year. The visitor will be amazed by this stunningly beautiful chapel. Apart from being one of the most attractive monumental structures, the Chapel is also a pilgrimage centre of Europe. The other popular place to visit in Alora is the Church of the ‘lady of incarnation’, also popular as Parish Church. This is one of the biggest churches of Malaga. The church is also popular as an outstanding example of masterly architecture. The interior of the
church bears some of the best works of sculpture. The church is located in the midst of a beautifully laid out garden. The Arab castle is another place of tourist interest in Alora. In fact historians say this castle was actually built by Romans. Historians say that the Castle was built to protect the city from enemies. The fort has some watch towers located at certain strategic locations. This well crafted castle attracts a large number of tourists every year. The Guadalhorce Valley is another place of interest. This valley is also popular for its beautiful natural beauty; it is rich in vegetation and is also the home of many wild animals. Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Burgeoning Buds of May!
B
uds are meant to burgeon in May, according to all good literature; here in Andalucía they are much more likely to do it in April. But, either month, it is an absolute delight, that delicious freshness of tiny brilliant green shoots emerging from dead-looking bare wood. The emergence of new life is magical enough to always make us gasp. If you come into the Garden Centre early on spring mornings, you´ll almost certainly catch us oohing and aahing at the latest emergence – even my daughters are good at it now! It becomes a contest to see who has noticed something new; the lime greenness of ginkgo biloba leaves, the shrimp pink buds unfurling on the schotia brachypetala or drunken parrot tree, smoky, sultry leaves on the cotinus, tulips in their candystriped coats, fat rosebuds bursting their jackets and the soft

sherbet colours of iris blending and mingling under the limpid leaves of quince trees. The evergreens have held sway all winter but now is the time of glory of the deciduous trees and herbaceous perennials. Never will they look so enticing so do take time to wonder at it all. Remember that gardens are places of pleasure – don´t wrap yourself up in so many tasks that you don´t have time to enjoy! Take your early-morning cup of tea out into the garden; you won´t be able to sit still for long, something will catch your eye and lead you down the path of garden delights. Two trees shine out for their freshness in springtime gardens; robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as the black locust tree, and robinia pseudoacacia 'Casque Rouge'. The genus robinia is named for a Parisian apothecary, Jean Robin, and his son, Vespasien, who worked as Royal gardeners to
Henry IV of France and planted out the garden for the Faculty of Medicine, later the Jardin des Plantes. It is believed that the first planting of robinia in Europe took place there in 1601; it was later introduced to England and one was planted at Kew Gardens in 1762 where it still lives, one of their oldest trees. Robinias are native to southeastern North America where robinia pseudoacacia was particularly valued and became largely used in the colonisation and construction booms of the U.S. Their attributes were seemingly endless! They are quick-growing and undemanding. The durability of their wood made it rot-proof and it was used for wagon wheels, fence posts, structural timbers, flooring and ship building. The flowers are very beautiful and have a wonderful fragrance; bees love them and an excellent honey is obtained. They have spreading aggressive roots that are great for stabilising

ground; they fix nitrogen and have a sweet liquorice flavour too. The tree is extremely resistant to pollution and, for this reason, was often planted along rail lines and as a street tree. It also makes an excellent slowburning firewood.

The black locust can reach 20m high with a trunk girth of 1m, so it´s not for small gardens! Its grey-brown bark is rough, fissured and deeply furrowed – Robinia pseudoacacia 'Casque Rouge very Now it has to be said that robinias attractive. The leaves are pinnate, are not perfect – who wants ferny and very pretty, especially in perfection anyway! Autumnal pruning, especially whilst young, will help to develop a good shape and strengthen weak growths. The robinias are mildly poisonous and the bark of the black locust is particularly poisonous so do take care when pruning. Don´t be put off planting robinias – their prettiness far outweighs their problems and I´m sure we´ve all got land crying out for one or two! We have both in stock at the moment. AIRSHOW IN TORRE DEL MAR More than 30 aircraft will participate in a fantastic air show that will hit Torre del Mar in July. The first annual Torre del Mar Air Show will feature the presence of everything from fighter jets like the Eurofighter to the Patrulla Aguila (Eagle Patrol), the aerobatic team of the Spanish Air Force. In addition, there will be various planes from other countries, including France, England, and Italy. On July 29 and 30, attendees will be able to watch the training exercises. CAMINITO DE REY On 22 April, the Caminito del Rey reopened its gates to the public. The tourist attraction had to be temporarily closed on Monday 28 March, an action the president of the provincial authority, Elías Bemdodo deemed “essential”, but for which he had to issue an apology for not having communicated the closure well enough. Bendodo, accompanied by several provincial representatives and by mayors, from Álora (José Sánchez), Ardales (María del Mar González), Antequerra (Manuel Barón) and Pizarra (Félix Lozano), presented the second stage of the project for the Caminito. Bendodo announced that from the 18th of this month, reservations can be made for tickets allowing access to one of the most famous walkways in the world. “We will be following the same management model as the Alhambra,” he explained. According to sources, visitors will be able to buy tickets - costing 10 euros maximum - on the official web page for the Caminito via secure and immediate payment. The exact price and whether there will be any kind of discount

NEW ROAD IN VELEZ A €1.8 million, five-month project to build a new approach road to the Hospital Comarcal in VélezMálaga has been licenced by the town hall. The road will run for 800 metres from avenida Juan Carlos I to the roundabout on the tranvía line. The object is to reduce congestion on avenida del Sol and the El Tomillar urbanisation.
