Editors Note... This month it seems talk about Bexit has heightened. (Just in case you've had your head buried in the sand, Brexit is the shorthand way of saying the UK leaving the EU - merging the words Britain and exit to get Brexit. In the same way as a Greek exit from the EU was dubbed Grexit in the past.) Expats living in Spain are still eligible to vote as long as they haven't left the UK for more than 15 years. This particular referendum due to be held on the Thursday, 23 June to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union has got expats more interested in their home politics than they have been for a while. In order to vote you need to be registered and then you can vote by proxy or by postal vote. Front Cover: El Morche

SALES HOTLINE : 637 028 873 : grapevinesales : grapevinesales@gmail.com : www.thegrapevine.es : Grapevine Magazine Axarquia

Take a look at the following link to find out how to register https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. If you aren’t already registered to vote, you must register by 7 June if you want to vote in the EU referendum on 23 June. Prime Minister David Cameron wants Britain to stay in the EU. Sixteen members of his cabinet also back staying in. The Conservative Party has pledged to be neutral in the campaign - but the Labour Party, SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Lib Dems are all in favour of staying in. US president Barack Obama also wants Britain to remain in the EU, as do other EU nations such as France and Germany. However, according to polls, the British public seems pretty evenly split on the issue. If you want to have your say from Spain you still can just remember to register to vote.

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update

A

widely criticised restoration of an ancient Spanish castle has won a prestigious international architecture prize. The five-year refurbishment of Matrera castle, a 1,000-year-old fortress near Cádiz, was the focus of a bitter clash between traditionalists and modernists. Its dilapidated structure was shored up and returned to its original dimensions in a project many saw as a botched attempt to impose a modernist white cube on the original fabric. However, the project was shortlisted in the global Architizer A+ awards and on Tuesday it won the popular vote in the architecture and preservation category. Carlos Quevedo, the architect who oversaw the project, expressed his delight at the prize. He will travel to New York next month to collect the award. “We are very happy,” “I am proud of the work we’ve done and we want to celebrate. It is very important for us because it a recognition for all the work we have done over five years.” Quevedo said he respected the opinions of those who criticised the project, but suggested they were upset by change. “People have different aesthetic opinions,” he said. “We were sure of the work we did. The critics didn’t like the change to the monument … Many have been negative, but architects – not only from Spain, but internationally – have sent me messages saying

the project is good.”

anks including Barclays and Santander face a €5bn (£4bn) bill after a Spanish court ruled that millions of fixed minimum rate mortgages were null and void because of the “lack of transparency” in the way they were sold during the property boom. The ruling in a Madrid commercial court comes in response to a class action suit on behalf of 15,000 mortgage holders. The mortgages contain what is known as a cláusula suelo, which fixes a minimum monthly payment. So, while still a variable rate mortgage, the bank sets a cut-off point below which payments are not allowed to fall. Some 40 banks are involved, including Caixabank, Barclays, Bankia, and Banco Santander. Caixabank and Bankia abolished cláusula suelo mortgages last year. The decision was anticipated by the banking sector and many have already made provisions for a payout. They have 20 days to appeal against the ruling.

S

pain’s Tax Agency is targeting the owners of apartments who placed rental ads last year – including those on specialized websites such as Airbnb – in a crackdown on unreported income. With the 2015 income tax drive now officially underway, taxpayers who use the new online tax filing

program, Renta Web, may find the following message on their computer screen: “According to data in the Tax Agency’s power, you have placed property rental ads in various media, including the internet.” The note is a reminder that any income from such rentals must be declared, in the same way as income from foreign pension schemes or other foreign assets. This is not the first time Spain’s taxman has gone after undeclared income from property rental. The agency’s management director, Rufino de la Rosa, has not explained how the Tax Agency has obtained rental data, noting only that popular real estate websites such as Idealista or Airbnb are not providing information to the authorities. This is not the first time Spain’s taxman has gone after undeclared income from property rental. In 2012, it conducted checks on homes that had been declared as empty, with many showing high utility consumption.

S

pain’s former prime minister José María Aznar has been ordered to pay almost €270,000 (£214,000) in fines and back taxes after allegedly billing personal income to his family business. Aznar, a key figure in the conservative People’s party which he helped to found and led for 13 years, was prime minister from 1996 to 2004. He was fined €70,403 and required to pay a further €199,052 in back taxes after inspectors concluded that in his returns for 2011-12 he had wrongly claimed income against Famaztella, the family business he runs with his wife, Ana Botella, the former mayor of Madrid. The tax rate for business is 25%, whereas if it had been declared as personal income it would be closer to 50%. The tax minister, Cristóbal Montoro, declined to comment on the affair. However, a source in the tax inspectorate told the Guardian that details of a leak initially reported by the online news site OKdiario were correct.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Good News and Bad news

L

ast month I wrote about our visit to Cómpeta's local school, Candido Lara, where Action for Animals and Naturvets gave a presentation to the children to explain the importance of caring for animals.

paintings. In total, they've raised an amazing €267.46 What an incredible achievement! A huge thank you to the teachers at Candido Lara, the organisers of the Art Walk and most of all a massive thank you to the pupils of Candido Lara. Well done, everyone!

Since the presentation, the children have been busy fundraising. Together with the teachers, they organised a second-hand market where they each brought various unwanted items into school to sell and raise money for the animals. This was followed by a "mini march" around the village where they rattled their collection boxes and encouraged local people to donate for the animals. During the recent Cómpeta Art Walk some of the children even sold their

On a less cheerful note, we were informed of a plastic bag full of newborn kittens which had been dumped next to a local rubbish bin. One of our volunteers, Elaine Greer, went to the scene and scooped them up in the hope they could be saved. I quickly rang Sandiey, our experienced Chief Kitten Nurturer, who willingly offered to look after them in the absence of their mother. Elaine brought the five fragile little kittens into the village in her best laundry

14 The Grapevine

Sadly, before the evening was over, two kittens died. They'd been so cold and weak, they'd had no chance. By the following morning another had died. Sandiey had been up with them all night, trying to raise their body temperatures and coax them into taking some kitten milk, but all her hard work had been in vain and she was absolutely distraught. She'd done everything she possibly could, but the heartless person who'd dumped them had given them little chance of survival. There were only two left. As I write this, a week later, just one kitten remains alive. Sandiey is doing a brilliant job and thankfully, this last one seems to be thriving. I hope by the time you read this article our last little kitten is still alive. Please help us to stop this kind of needless suffering and cruelty. Action for Animals offers free neutering, so there's absolutely no reason for unwanted kittens to be abandoned in such an inhumane way. You can help by spreading the word to your friends and neighbours and encouraging them to come into our shop for a free neutering voucher. Together we can make a difference. MENU DEL DIA Good Food at Reasonable Prices

Y

ou can enjoy a three course meal with wine for the price of a snack, if you know these magic words; Menu del Dia, which means simply Menu of the Day. Traditionally served between two and three in the afternoon by just about every restaurant in Spain, this afternoon delight is a great way to eat good food at a very reasonable price. It all started during Franco’s time as a way for workers to obtain a nutritious meal at an affordable price. Franco has gone, but thankfully Menu del Dia lives on, and is in fact as popular as ever, but you have to know about it to get it. Some restaurants advertise their Menu of the Day on a chalk board outside the establishment, whilst others will happily bring you the normal menu without mentioning the cheap option. Of course the standard menu may have a list of dishes as long

16 The Grapevine

as your arm, whereas the fare on offer for Menu of the Day may only provide a choice of three or four dishes for each course, but there’s usually something there to suit everyone. Let’s get one thing straight here; the food is not inferior or in any way less nutritious than what’s being offered from the main menu. The difference is the price, and I promise you, I’ve never walked away from a Menu del Dia feeling hungry; quite the contrary in fact. Don’t forget that these meals were meant to feed the workers, and still do, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself surrounded by a group of Spanish taking their lunch break. A popular first course is a really tasty soup or a salad, but dishes are as diverse as the restaurants which offer them, so there won’t be a problem finding something you like. A Chinese restaurant will have its own particular version, as will an Italian or

Indian, but most Spanish bars and restaurants stick to what they know the locals will enjoy. Chicken, fish, meatballs or pork usually come with chips, but that’s no different to the main menu. There’s usually the choice of a pudding or coffee, but if you want to pay extra, you can have both. Although Menu del Dia is available nationwide, the cheapest place, according to the Organisation of Consumers and Users, is Malaga, which weighed in with an average price of €7.55 which is pretty good value for a hearty meal. The only problem with Menu del Dia is that you probably won’t want to eat a big meal in the evening, which could spoil your restaurant plans, but if you’re happy to eat your main meal in the middle of the day, and are looking to save money, it’s made for you,

MADRID, CAPITAL OF SPAIN The history and orientation

T

he city of Madrid is located on the Castilian plain or meseta (center of Spain). It was initially settled by the Moors around 852 AD. The Moors first built an alcazar (or fortress) with the intention of protecting themselves from the Christian forces coming from the north. According to a general belief, they chose this specific location because of the Manzanares stream that offered a rich water supply. The city’s name, Madrid, is believed to be derived from the Arabic word for “source of water” or “stream”.

from about 20,000 people to a little more than 150,000. Experiencing such rapid development, Madrid became one of the most powerful cities in the empire. Despite the fact that Spain had numerous enemies at the time, Madrid still managed to grow. We can still see the leftovers of the early dynasties in present day Madrid: old buildings and construction projects, such as the Plaza Mayor (1590-1790), the City Hall (1630) and the Royal Palace (1764), built before the Moorish Fortress was burned to the ground, at around 1734. The Modern Madrid

After approximately two centuries, in 1085, the city of Madrid was conquered by the Christians, it continued to remain a small settlement. It became big when King Philip II decided to establish his court in the city, in 1561. By that point Madrid’s population continued to grow rapidly. In just a century it went

18 The Grapevine

Going past the main historic periods (such as the French, Bourbon, Republican and Nationalist), we can observe now that much of the towns structures were built around the 19th and 20th centuries. Let us take the Gran Via as an example, where you can view the brilliant

skyscrapers from the 1900s, continuing to the beautiful Plaza de Espana, decorated with the same skyscrapers from the late 1950s. If we leave the center and head north, along the shady and heavily circulated Paseo de la Castellana, we will encounter a number of modern buildings, like the Tores Kio for example. The Tores Kio is located at the Plaza de Castilla. We can see another remarkable building, the Terminal 4, located at Madrid’s Barajas Airport. The Terminal 4 was designed by Estudio Lamala and the Richard Rogers Partnership, in Madrid. The newer buildings of Madrid may not be as interesting as the ones presented for the average tourist. However, these new structures continue to pass on the dynamic spirit of a flourishing city. Gray Son

acid, a “heart healthy” fatty acid that is believed to be one of the main reasons for the health benefits of olive oil. 4. Avocados Are Loaded with Fibre. Avocados tend to be high in fibre, about 7% by weight, which is very high compared to most other foods. Fibre can have various important benefits for weight loss and metabolic health.

LOCAL PRODUCE Why we should be eating more of it.

S

ince moving to Cómpeta I have been amazed at the quality of local produce and how seasonal they are. I find it wonderful to go to the local market or local independent shops and find home-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables that change week in, week out depending on the time of year. It brings the excitement back to the weekly shop! Some of the local gems that we should use more often in are diets are discussed below and some ideas on how to use them.

Avocado The avocado is a rather unique type of fruit. Most fruit consists primarily of carbohydrate, while avocado is high in healthy fats. Numerous studies show that it has powerful beneficial effects on health. Here are 11 health benefits of avocado, that are supported by scientific research. 1. Avocado is Incredibly Nutritious. Avocado fruit is prized for its high nutrient value and is added to all sorts of dishes due to its good

flavour and rich texture. Avocados are very nutritious and contain a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals. Here are some of the most abundant nutrients, in a single 100 gram serving: Vitamin K: 26% of the RDA, Folate: 20% of the RDA, Vitamin C: 17% of the RDA, Potassium: 14% of the RDA, Vitamin B5: 14% of the RDA, Vitamin B6: 13% of the RDA and Vitamin E: 10% of the RDA. It contains small amounts of Magnesium, Manganese, Copper, Iron, Zinc, Phosphorous, Vitamin A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin) and B3 (Niacin). 2. They Contain More Potassium than Bananas Potassium is an important mineral that most people don't get enough of. Avocados are very high in potassium, which support healthy blood pressure levels. 3. Avocado is Loaded with Heart-Healthy Monounsaturated Fatty Acids. Avocados and avocado oil are high in monounsaturated oleic

5. Eating Avocados Can Lower Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the world. Avocados have been shown to reduce total cholesterol levels significantly, reduce blood triglycerides by up to 20%, lower LDL cholesterol by up to 22% and increase HDL (the “good”) cholesterol by up to 11%. 6. People Who Eat Avocados Tend to be Healthier One dietary survey found that people who ate avocados had a much higher nutrient intake and had a lower risk of metabolic syndrome. 7. The Fat in Them Can Help You Absorb Nutrients from Plant Foods. Studies have shown that eating avocado or avocado oil with veggies can dramatically increase the amount of antioxidants you take in. 8. Avocados Are Loaded with Powerful Antioxidants That Can Protect the Eyes Avocados are high in antioxidants, including Lutein and Zeaxanthin. These nutrients are very important for eye health and lower the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. 9. Avocado Extract May Help Relieve Symptoms of Arthritis Studies have shown that an extract from avocado and soybean oils can significantly reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis.

The Grapevine 27

10. Eating Avocado May Help You Lose Weight There is some evidence that avocados are a weight loss friendly food. In one study, people were split into groups. One group was instructed to eat a meal that contained avocado, the other a similar meal without avocado. Then they were asked a series of questions related to hunger and satiety. The people eating the avocado felt 23% more satisfied and had a 28% lower desire to eat over the next 5 hours (35).If this holds true in the long-term, then including avocados in your diet could help you naturally eat fewer calories and have an easier time sticking to a healthy diet. 11. Avocado is Delicious and Easy to Incorporate in The Diet Not only are avocados healthy, they're also incredibly delicious and go with all sorts of foods. You can add them to salads and various sorts of recipes, or you can simply scoop them out with a spoon and eat them plain. They have a creamy, rich, fatty texture and blend well with various other ingredients. Guacamole is my favourite use of avocado and includes the addition of sea salt, garlic, lime, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and fresh coriander. An avocado often takes some time to ripen and it should feel slightly soft when ripe. The nutrients in avocado can oxidize soon after fleshing it, but if you add lemon juice then that shouldn't happen as quickly. Honey Since ancient times, honey has been used as both a food and a medicine. It's very high in beneficial plant compounds, and offers several health benefits. Honey is particularly healthy when used instead of refined sugar, which is 100% empty calories. Here are the top 10 health benefits of honey that are supported by science.

28 The Grapevine

1. Honey Contains Some Nutrients Honey is thick, sweet liquid made by honeybees. It is low in vitamins and minerals, but may be high in some plant compounds.

still being used today. When applied to the skin, honey can be part of an effective treatment plan for burns, wounds and many other skin conditions. It is particularly effective for diabetic foot ulcers.

2. High-Quality Honey is Rich in Antioxidants High-quality honey contains many important antioxidants. These includes phenols, enzymes and compounds like flavonoids and organic acids Antioxidants have been linked to reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes and some types of cancer. They may also promote eye health.

9. Honey Can Help Suppress Coughs in Children For children over one year of age, honey can act as a natural and safe cough suppressant. Some studies show that it is even more effective than cough medication.

4. Honey Can Help Lower Blood Pressure Blood pressure is an important risk factor for heart disease, and honey may help lower it. This is because honey contains antioxidant compounds that have been linked to blood pressure lowering effects 5. Honey Also Helps to Improve Cholesterol Honey seems to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. It leads to modest reductions in total and LDL cholesterol, while raising HDL. 6. Honey Can Lower Triglycerides Elevated triglycerides are a risk factor for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Several studies show that honey can lower triglyceride levels, especially when it is being used to replace sugar. 7. Honey is Linked to Other Beneficial Effects on Heart Health The antioxidants in honey have been linked to beneficial effects on heart health, including increased blood flow to the heart and a reduced risk of blood clot formation. 8. Honey Promotes Burn and Wound Healing Applying honey to the skin has been used to heal wounds and burns since ancient Egypt, and is

10. Honey may be able to alleviate symptoms of Hay fever Eating local honey for hay fever works on the theory that it desensitizes you to pollen allergy. It contains the heavy grained pollen which does not trigger allergic reaction and keep the body system to develop immunity against hay fever. Some beekeepers think that it should be started at least 8 weeks before the hay fever season starts; while others think it should be at least 6 months before the season. Most proponents of the treatment think that it does not benefit if you start taking honey once the symptoms appear. Almonds & Walnuts High-protein almonds are ideal for satiating the appetite in a healthy way. They are rich in monounsaturated fats; much research now links this type of fat with a reduced risk of heart disease. These nuts are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, which seems to protect against UV light damage and Alzheimer's disease. By munching away on almonds you can top up on important minerals: manganese, which helps the body form strong bones and regulates blood sugar; and magnesium, which is essential for organ, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and regulating blood pressure. Eat almonds with the skin on as they contain an impressive collection of flavonoids that act as antioxidants and enhance the effect of vitamin E that could be beneficial as we age.

Walnuts not only taste great but are a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and an excellent source of those hard to find omega-3 fatty acids. Like most nuts, they can easily be added to your Healthiest Way of Eating. Just chop and add to your favourite salad, vegetable dish, fruit, or dessert. One of my favourite ways to enjoy walnuts is in a salad of apples, rocket leaves, crumbled Spanish blue cheese and drizzled with honey and olive oil. Olives and Olive Oil Olives are a great little snack, salty and satisfying with cheese, crackers, fruit, and other light fare, and a wonderful addition to salads. But the nutritional aspects go far beyond what one might expect, discovered centuries ago throughout Mediterranean regions where the olive tree first grew. Scientists now know it's the phytonutrients and antioxidants in olives such as hydroxytyrosol and histamine that can help prevent heart disease, stroke, DNA damage, and cancer, and positively affect the nervous system, respiratory system, immunity, and digestion. Healthy fats in olives, such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid are linked to reduced blood pressure, inflammation, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease risk. Oleuropein, found only in olives, scavenges nitric oxide. These and other nutritional attributes in olives make them an exceptional addition to your Olive oil is very high in monounsaturated fats and contains a modest amount of vitamins E and K. True extra virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, some of which have powerful health benefits. Olive oil contains oleic acid and oleocanthal, nutrients that can fight inflammation. This may be the main reason for olive oil's health benefits. Olive oil may be one of the healthiest foods you can eat for heart health. It lowers

blood pressure, protects LDL particles from oxidation, reduces inflammation and may help prevent unwanted blood clotting. There is preliminary evidence that olive oil can help fight cancer and Alzheimer's disease, although this needs to be confirmed in human controlled trials. Cherries Everyone knows how delicious cherries can be, but did you know that they can also relieve pain, help you avoid premature aging, and add years to your life? Below are 6 reasons to eat more cherries. 1. Help Fight Cancer and Disease Cherries, along with many other berries, are a rich source of antioxidants. They help prevent or repair the damage that is done to the body's cells by free radicals. This means that antioxidants replace free radicals in your body before they can cause any damage. Queritrin (a flavonoid) is rich in cherries, and has been found by researchers to be one of the most potent anticancer agents. When eating cherries, the queritrin is set free to fight off all the body's cancerous cells. Cherries also contain ellagic acid, a naturally occurring plant phenolic known as an anticarcinogenic/anti-mutagenic compound. Some researchers say that ellagic acid may be the most effective way to prevent cancer. Another compound found in cherrie, perillyl alcohol (POH), is extremely powerful in reducing the occurrence of all types of cancer. Researchers found that POH stops the growth of cancer cells by depriving them of the proteins they need to grow. It has worked on every kind of cancer that POH has been tested against. 2.Help Relieve Pain of Arthritis and Gout. Tart cherries contain two powerful compounds, anthocyanins and

bioflavonoids. Both of these compounds slow down the enzymes Cyclo-oxyygenase-1 and -2, which help to relieve and prevent arthritis and gout in the body. Gout is a very painful condition and occurs when excess uric acid crystallises in the joints. Doctors say drinking cherry juice daily could help beat condition as the juice helps clear excess uric acid from the body in just a few hours. 3.Eliminate Oxidative Stress and Prevent Premature Aging Cherries are rich in two important flavonoids, isoqueritrin and queritrin, which act as antioxidants and work to eliminate by-products of oxidative stress, therefore slowing down the aging process. 4.Help Cure Migraines By helping reduce inflammation in the body, the anthocyanin and bioflavonoids in cherries also help eliminate migraine headaches. These compounds are known to have similar activity to aspirin and ibuprofen. 5.Improve Body's Circadian Rhythms. Extensive evidence points out that the antioxidant melatonin, which is also rich in cherries, is significant in improving the body's circadian rhythms. Since melatonin is found in small quantities in the body, a slight increase can produce great results. .

6.Help You Sleep Melatonin is also found to help the body's natural sleep patterns. Since the body so rapidly absorbs melatonin, cherries can increase melatonin levels in the blood, therefore improving the way you sleep. Conclusion As you can see locally grown fruits, veg and nuts are so good for our body and mind and are readily available in the independent shops and market in C贸mpeta. More reasons why living in Spain is a great way of life!

I’M OFF AGAIN - WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN ME? Maggie Woodward

I

f you’re reading this on the day of issue (1 May) I will have been walking along my latest Camino de Santiago for the last eight days. This year my camino takes me along the north coast of Spain, from the French border, following the Camino del Norte from Irun to Ribadeo (625 kms), then I go ‘off camino’ and continue to follow the coast for a further 200 kms until I reach Ferrol and join a different pilgrimage route, appropriately called the Ingles, for 120 kms into Santiago de Compostela. If I have made good time and stuck to my walking schedule I will have been walking for 35 days and will have time to walk on to Finisterre and Muxia a further 120 kms, before returning to Santiago and flying home at the very end of May. This is a stunningly beautiful hike with the coastline to the right and mountains to the left. On many occasions it trails across beaches, at other times it’s necessary to take a ferry across a port or the mouth of a river. It passes through some really interesting towns and cities and the region as a whole is renowned for its fabulous food. There are a lot of ups and downs, particularly during the first week and it is considered one of the most strenuous caminos. I seem to have been preparing for this camino forever, but I am

36 The Grapevine

feeling totally unprepared. I have plotted my route, downloaded GPS tracks and investigated accommodation possibilities where albergues are not available. A complete day has been spent weighing gear, decanting products into small travel bottles and winding a supply of loo roll for those occasions when someone beat me to it. And I have taken many long training walks in the mountains, some happily alone and others in the company of great friends. This is my fourth camino and you might expect that I would take it all in my stride (pun intended), but I’ve been experiencing many waking hours in the middle of the night and my poor brain is jumping around with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The adrenaline will be pumping just as much on this camino as it was on my first. I am expecting to encounter some serious weather of the wet variety - northern Spain doesn’t get to be so green and pleasant without a very good watering system. And Galicia, where I will be spending fifteen of my forty walking days is renowned for its rainfall. 2016 has been deemed a ‘Extraordinary Year of Mercy’ by Pope Francis. This means that the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela will be

opened to receive the faithful who will then be forgiven even the most serious of sins. The Holy Door in Santiago is normally only opened when St James’ day (25 July) falls on a Sunday and this brings a surge of pilgrims to the city. So this special year of mercy is expected to create a very busy year on the camino, although I’m hoping that there won’t be too many extra pilgrims walking on my route - I really prefer a bit of solitude. As usual, my partner David will be collecting sponsorship funds for charity, and this year we have again chosen CUDECA cancer hospice and Save the Children. Last year we collected a magnificent sum of around 1,300 euros from our wonderful friends and neighbours - so if you see David approaching in Cómpeta or Canillas, don’t run and hide - let’s see if we can beat last year’s amazing result. And if you would like to accompany me on my travels, you can sign up to follow my blog. I post live from the camino every day with tales from the trail and accompanying photos of the beautiful scenery. I would love your company - you can join the many supportive followers who give me encouragement with their entertaining comments each day. You can find my blog at www.magwood.me By Maggie Woodward

Parador de Cardona

THE UNDISCOVERED PARADORS OF SPAIN Travelling in Spain

N

o matter which season you choose for travelling, there is nothing more delightful than a Spanish vacation. This is truly a top destination providing something for everyone, whether you're after beaches or sweeping plains, lively clubs or impressive cathedrals. It is much more than just bull fighting, bull running, flamenco and tomato fights that make this small country so exotic. Spaniards have always tried their best to make the country attractive and unforgettable for tourists. Spain has the usual selection of modern hotels and hostels, but if you travel off the beaten track you can easily discover many alternative kinds of tourist accommodation. Within this category, the Spanish paradors particularly stand out. The word “parador” literally means “stopping place”. Paradors form a chain of historic buildings

54 The Grapevine

converted into lodging places all around the country. They stretch from Galicia in the North West through Catalonia to Andalusia in the south, the Canary Islands and to the Spanish cities of North Africa. It was the idea of the Royal Tourist Commissioner Marques de la Vega-Inclan in 1926 to set up paradors in places of special interest or remote locations with two purposes. Firstly, it would help provide inexpensive accommodation to travellers in remote areas. Secondly, it would keep all the run-down monuments and historic buildings in good condition which would otherwise be left to fall apart. You can call it an irony of fate, but nowadays paradors are respectable high-standard hotels with all mod cons. They preserve their previous elegance and at the same time ensure your absolute comfort.

The Spanish parador is also where you will discover Spanish cuisine of the highest calibre. So, if you like to be pampered and realise that staying at one of Spanish paradors is just what you have always wanted, the next step is deciding what kind of parador will make the most of your holidays. Below are just a few of the many options available to tourists. Each suggestion is accompanied by an example – one of paradors offered by Keytel International, the UK’s only official representative for the Spanish Paradores. 1) Perhaps you wish to enjoy the atmosphere of Medieval Spain, staying in a medieval castle. Example: Cardona – the fortified 9th century enclosure, conceals a 2nd century tower and an 11th century church along with spectacular bedrooms, some with four-poster beds. Located on a vantage point of the fortified town and inside the solid stone walls,

Parador de Guadalupe

we find furniture inspired from medieval times in the drawing rooms. 2) Then, it may be a Monastery or a Medieval Hospital, where walls have been oozing religious spirit for many centuries. Example: Guadalupe – the 15th century hospital of St. John the Baptist reflects religious spirit of absorption and reflection on the former Monastery of Nuestra Seňora de Guadalupe. The unique orchard forming the garden, its secluded swimming pool, arcade and white walls, announce the spacious interior, whose bedrooms recall the original religious function. 3) You may prefer a stay in the Spanish countryside with colourful views of Spanish landscape and fresh country food. This option is gaining in popularity as tourists wish to leave the busy city life behind. Example: Keytel Int. offers a great number of country-side

paradors. One of them is located in Albacete, in central Spain, near to Madrid Airport, La Mancha Country House. The stamp of Cervantes influences the character of this Parador, the calmness of its luxuriant garden, its swimming pool, and attractive corridor. Its décor offers the privacy and calm necessary to escape from daily routine in relaxed working sessions in the Sancho Panza and Dulcinea rooms. The local cuisine covers everything from "pisto manchego" (fried vegetables), partridge in "escabeche" sauce and a puffpastry sweet, "Miguelitos de la Roda". 4) If you are not a fan of history and ancient architecture, you are free to choose a parador built in the modern style. Located in areas of great natural beauty, close to entertainments and shopping centres they are built to accommodate modern requirements and convenience.

Example: El Hierro – The Parador is located on the most recent and least populated of the Canary Islands. This is also the place, where up until a century ago, the "O" meridian line passed through. The Parador rises up, by the sea, with whitewashed walls and wooden balconies. Comfortable bedrooms complement an interior with an elegant, colonial tone along with a garden with a swimming pool. These unique buildings create the perfect atmosphere for your holiday, matched only by the welcome you will receive from the Spanish people. inspire buyers to want to soak up your views every day, welcome buyers into your pool, gardens, courtyard or terrace? Does your selection of photos encourage them to organise a viewing?

CREATIVE PROPERTY MARKETING Your guide to attracting buyers to your Spanish property...

A

ll buyers of property in Spain start their search on-line and therefore, making your property stand out, is essential. Currently, buyers have over 200,000 Spanish properties to choose from on Spain's leading property sales website. The formula for success is quite simple. Creative Property Marketing believes that empowering sellers to get the best marketing for their home is vital. Making sure a property is visible and wellpresented on-line guarantees great internet 'curb appeal' – the equivalent to a successful UK drive past that results in a viewing! 1. It is rare to find two homes for sale in Spain that are identical - every home has a rare quality. This usually applies to homes for sale in an urban setting or in the countryside. Therefore, every Spanish home has a unique selling point relating to its structure, how it is decorated/finished, location or views. Realising this unique quality and promoting it, is key. Its likely, there is a buyer out there searching for the rare quality your home offers. Ensuring the title on your property details include your unique selling point is imperative. This is what will stop a buyer when searching on-line and encourage them to read more and ultimately organise a viewing! 2. Photography - especially the main image is so important. Getting this right is essential -

56 The Grapevine

does the image make a buyer click on your property to find out more? The main photo of your property needs to ensure buyers don't scroll past it when searching on a website. The image needs to offer a little something special something inviting. This does not have to be a huge swimming pool or glitzy villa, it could, be an intimate image of a courtyard with flowering pot plants or an apartment balcony with far reaching views. 3. Price - does the price equal what you are selling? Are you advertising the total size of your property in square meters to include; your pool, covered terraces, outbuildings etc? Many buyers will subconsciously calculate an approximate price per square meter. Does your property compete well in the current market? Have you searched on Kyero.com for example to compare other properties for sale against your own? Ideally, search in your immediate area and further afield. This is what buyers will be doing and undergoing this exercise yourself can be very enlightening! 4. Presentation on-line via photography and then presentation in reality during viewings. Does your property presentation scream, buy me now?! When a buyer flicks through your portfolio of photographs on-line, do the images sell a desirable lifestyle? Are the images light and bright, show off current dĂŠcor/finishes? Do the images of your home

Then when the buyers arrives to view the property, does it look better or as good as in the photographs? Is your home immaculately presented so the buyer believes it always looks like this - weeds don't grow, dust never falls and paintwork rarely needs refreshing? If buyers feel relaxed rather than overwhelmed by seeing a list of jobs they already have to do on the day of completion, they are more likely to buy your home. 5. Legal paperwork. Do you have copies available for buyers to see during a viewing of your property; the Nota Simple, a recent IBI bill, Catastral details, a water, electricity and telephone bill? If the buyers appear interested, simply offering them sight of, an explanation of or a copy of these details can give buyers huge confidence. It shows them you have nothing to hide and equally displays to the buyer that you are knowledgeable about the legality of your home. It does not matter if you are using an estate agent - the property is yours to sell whatever it takes to beat the competition! If you have found this guide helpful and would like to discuss the topic in more detail, Sarah & David Rick of Creative Property Marketing are always available to be of assistance to you. They have a refreshing attitude towards property sales - offering sellers of property all over Spain something above and beyond the standard approach. SURGE IN EXPATS APPLYING TO REGISTER TO VOTE EU Referendum 23rd June.

T

he announcement of the date for the Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union has triggered a surge in the numbers of British expats wanting to register to vote. Latest figures show thousands of British nationals who live overseas are now going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote in order to be able to have their say on 23 June. The average daily rate of online registrations by Britons abroad has quadrupled from an average of just over 600 per day before the announcement of the referendum date last weekend, to more than 2600 per day since then.

58 The Grapevine

The Electoral Commission has launched a global campaign to encourage an estimated five million Britons living overseas to check their eligibility to vote ahead of the referendum on EU membership. The Foreign Office is supporting the campaign overseas, including in Spain. The British Ambassador Simon Manley, visiting Malaga on Tuesday (23 February), said: Whether you think the UK should remain in or leave the EU, the 23rd of June will be your chance to have your say. This is a oncein-a-generation opportunity for the British people to decide.

now live in Spain, most expats still have strong ties with the UK – financial, family, friends. You may also decide to return one day. So you very probably do have a stake in the outcome and how it may affect your life. I strongly encourage you to register to vote – just go online and follow the simple process. If you have been on the UK electoral roll within the last 15 years, you are eligible to vote. Former residents of England, Scotland and Wales can quickly register at www.gov.uk/registerto-vote. If you last lived in Northern Ireland then you need to download an overseas voter application form from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, at Eoni webpage. I sometimes spot weevils - strange creatures, with a trunk-like proboscis and weird antenna. Look out for Spanish Festoon, Green Veined White and Maxarine Blue butterflies, Common Wave moths, Darkling Beetles, Carpenter bees, Spurge bugs, and the red and black Lygaeus bugs. Birds Millions of birds fly from Africa to Europe each spring: we are on the flight path. Skies over the towns are full of swallows and swifts while the house martins are renovating their mud nests on our buildings. The raptors are back, too: you will see eagles, buzzards and falcons if you look about. Try spotting Willow Warbler, Chiff-Chaff, Sardinian Warbler, Spotted flycatcher, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Northern Wheatear, Meadow Pipit, Hoopoe, Bee-eaters, Booted Eagles, Snake Eagles. Listen out for the Melodious Warbler and the Cuckoo.

MAY WILDLIFE The Axarquia is a wildlife paradise!

T

he Axarquia is a wildlife paradise. There's little intensive farming, limited industry, lots of wild land and a gentle climate. May is mid spring and all nature knows it: if you are a wildlife lover get out of doors and look about. Here are some of the things you might want to keep an eye out for. Flowers April and May are poppy-time – you find them scattered about banks, sometimes a rag-tag few, sometimes a field-full that wants to be a Van Gogh painting with all that implausible colour crying out to be seen. In the Natural Park you see the white flowering

asphodel and masses of pink rock-roses. You may see late orchids; pink butterfly orchids or the sawfly orchid. In fact flora is everywhere, bursting out of every bit of rough ground, from the dramatic Giant Fennel to the tiny blue pimpernel. Look for Convolvulus, Morning Glory, Spanish Vetchling, Small Tree Mallow, False Sowthistle, Smooth Hawksbit, Musk Storksbill, Blue Alkanet and Borage. Beetles, Butterflies, Bugs Butterflies are pretty but I'm as fond of the bugs and beetles you find among the flowers. Even the beetles I see bravely rolling dung-balls backwards on the dirt tracks (as if they just can't face

Beasts I see more reptiles from this time on because of the warmth; lizards sit out on the sandy paths in the morning to warm up; geckos climb walls, stalking the mosquitoes the lights attract. You might, if you are lucky, see a young chameleon. As for mammals, if you go walking you may well see Ibex – the mountain goat. But the main mammal I start seeing more of is the humble bat. That may be because there are more insects with the rising warmth – or it may be that I am out at dusk more often in May than in March. ALORA The fascinating Spanish village

W

hen we speak of Spain, every tourist is in agreement, and they all say ‘Spain is a heaven for tourists’. That speaks of how beautiful the country is. Beautiful mountains followed by vast plains with beautiful landscape, rich vegetation, stunningly beautiful beaches, monumental buildings built centuries ago, parks with historical importance, museums and luxurious villas and apartments at most affordable rental prices and hotels serving most delicious continental recipes, well trained tourist guides; what more could a tourist require? All tourists will certainly enjoy every minute of their stay in Spain and go home with cherished memories of their trip. Another interesting aspect of traveling in Spain is that every city and village has many things to offer to the tourist. Take for

62 The Grapevine

example, the tiny village of Alora, located near the famous province of Malaga. This tiny village is recognized as one of the best tourist spots in Spain. The tourists will certainly agree that there is something interesting in every part of this tiny village. Take for example the Chapel called ‘lady of flower’, built in the 16th century, which houses the image of the ‘virgin of flowers’. This Chapel in Alora receives a large number of tourists every year. The visitor will be amazed by this stunningly beautiful chapel. Apart from being one of the most attractive monumental structures, the Chapel is also a pilgrimage centre of Europe. The other popular place to visit in Alora is the Church of the ‘lady of incarnation’, also popular as Parish Church. This is one of the biggest churches of Malaga. The church is also popular as an outstanding example of masterly architecture. The interior of the

church bears some of the best works of sculpture. The church is located in the midst of a beautifully laid out garden. The Arab castle is another place of tourist interest in Alora. In fact historians say this castle was actually built by Romans. Historians say that the Castle was built to protect the city from enemies. The fort has some watch towers located at certain strategic locations. This well crafted castle attracts a large number of tourists every year. The Guadalhorce Valley is another place of interest. This valley is also popular for its beautiful natural beauty; it is rich in vegetation and is also the home of many wild animals. The Government of Spain has harnessed this beautiful environment and has transformed this valley rich in vegetation; now it has become a tourist attraction. Jim Harison

AN INTERVIEW WITH FELIPE ARREBOLA LOPEZ Felipe talks about his Metal work and Estate Agents businesses. Have you lived in Competa all

your life? Yes, I was born in Cómpeta, which is a white village nestled in the mountains of the Axarquia. It is here where I spent my childhood, my youth and where I have spent every year of my life. Cómpeta has seen me grow up, form my family and start and develop my own metalwork company. I would like to thank all my clients, the majority of which are foreigners as it is their support and encouragement which helped me to take the step of starting a second business, an Estate

Agent. What do you love about Competa? For me it is the best place in the world to live. But it you visit the village you will soon see that I am

not the only person who thinks so. Given the amount of tourism we have in the village and those who have settled in this paradise we give thanks to them as they have given more life, work and wellbeing to the village. Siempre quiso ser dueño de su propio negocio? Si, siempre quise ser Autónomo y en el momento que me encontré formado y capacitado, empecé con el primero, Carpintería metálica Did you always want to own your own businesses? Yes, I always wanted to be self employed, I first started in Metalwork where I was and trained and educated ¿Cómo te metiste en la industria de trabajo del metal, lo que la formación o las calificaciones tiene usted? Era entonces el campo que conocía y cuando tuve lo formación suficiente, compre mi primer local y empecé a trabajar por mi cuenta. How did you get into the metal work industry, what training or qualifications do you have? Once I knew what I wanted to do I trained and trained and when I thought I had all the training I needed, I bought my first business premises and started working on my own. ¿Qué servicios o productos ofrece el negocio de trabajo de metal. Todo lo relacionado con la metal, hierros, aluminios, mosquiteras, mamparas, cristales, forja etc etc What services or products does the metal work business offer ? Everything related to metal, iron, aluminum, mosquito nets, screens, glass, wrought iron etc.

You have opened an Estate Agents business how is this going? We are new but we consider ourselves professionals due to the service and attention we give to our customers. So far we have sold a sufficient number of homes and we have many homes that we have rented out for holidays and longer term lets. We have plenty of houses on our books and many at unbeatable prices. How long have you had your own business In Competa and what changes have there been since you first opened? I have had my own business since I was young and the changes over time have been both extensive and successful and can be attributed to the increase in tourism in Cómpeta over time. The growth in tourism has ultimately given us a better standard of living. In order to sustain the businesses in Competa we need people both daily visitors and those that live here permanently.

¿Tiene algún plan de futuro para las empresas en Cómpeta? El plan de futuro es avanzar con el tiempo y que otra generación puedan seguir trabajando en esto que nosotros hemos emprendido. Do you have any future plans for your businesses in Competa? The future plan is to move with the times so that another generation can continue working where we have left off. Haces todo el trabajo usted mismo? ¿Tiene otros empleados? No, por supuesto tengo mas empleados, no podria llevar y atender a mis clientes sin la profesionalidad de otro personas. Do you do all the work yourself? Do you have other employees? Yes of course I have others working with me. If not, it just wouldn't be possible to provide all my clients the appropriate professionalism and level of service. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? If good health and my clients permit I want to continue with my successful business. Whilst at the same time, I want to enjoy time with my family. ¿Qué hace usted para divertirse? Estar con mi familia y amigos, el tiempo que mi trabajo me permite What do you do for fun? I like to be with my family and friends, of course if my job allows me the time!

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Burgeoning Buds of May!

uds are meant to burgeon in May, according to all good literature; here in Andalucía they are much more likely to do it in April. But, either month, it is an absolute delight, that delicious freshness of tiny brilliant green shoots emerging from dead-looking bare wood. The emergence of new life is magical enough to always make us gasp. If you come into the Garden Centre early on spring mornings, you´ll almost certainly catch us oohing and aahing at the latest emergence – even my daughters are good at it now! It becomes a contest to see who has noticed something new; the lime greenness of ginkgo biloba leaves, the shrimp pink buds unfurling on the schotia brachypetala or drunken parrot tree, smoky, sultry leaves on the cotinus, tulips in their candystriped coats, fat rosebuds bursting their jackets and the soft

sherbet colours of iris blending and mingling under the limpid leaves of quince trees. The evergreens have held sway all winter but now is the time of glory of the deciduous trees and herbaceous perennials. Never will they look so enticing so do take time to wonder at it all. Remember that gardens are places of pleasure – don´t wrap yourself up in so many tasks that you don´t have time to enjoy! Take your early-morning cup of tea out into the garden; you won´t be able to sit still for long, something will catch your eye and lead you down the path of garden delights. Two trees shine out for their freshness in springtime gardens; robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as the black locust tree, and robinia pseudoacacia 'Casque Rouge'. The genus robinia is named for a Parisian apothecary, Jean Robin, and his son, Vespasien, who worked as Royal gardeners to

Henry IV of France and planted out the garden for the Faculty of Medicine, later the Jardin des Plantes. It is believed that the first planting of robinia in Europe took place there in 1601; it was later introduced to England and one was planted at Kew Gardens in 1762 where it still lives, one of their oldest trees. Robinias are native to southeastern North America where robinia pseudoacacia was particularly valued and became largely used in the colonisation and construction booms of the U.S. Their attributes were seemingly endless! They are quick-growing and undemanding. The durability of their wood made it rot-proof and it was used for wagon wheels, fence posts, structural timbers, flooring and ship building. The flowers are very beautiful and have a wonderful fragrance; bees love them and an excellent honey is obtained. They have spreading aggressive roots that are great for stabilising

– and they become very drought tolerant. Both are resistant to insect attack and disease, really tough beauties!

The black locust can reach 20m high with a trunk girth of 1m, so it´s not for small gardens! Its grey-brown bark is rough, fissured and deeply furrowed – Robinia pseudoacacia 'Casque Rouge very Now it has to be said that robinias attractive. The leaves are pinnate, are not perfect – who wants ferny and very pretty, especially in perfection anyway! Both are springtime, and the pea-like widely grown as ornamentals for flowers are clustered into hanging their graceful habit but they do racemes, dangling prettily rather have their down-sides too! Firstly, like wisteria, and wafting their rich they are fairly spiny – the thorns perfume around during spring and of the black locust were even early summer. Autumnal pruning, especially whilst young, will help to develop a good shape and strengthen weak growths. The robinias are mildly poisonous and the bark of the black locust is particularly poisonous so do take care when pruning. Don´t be put off planting robinias – their prettiness far outweighs their problems and I´m sure we´ve all got land crying out for one or two! We have both in stock at the moment. CAMINITO DE REY On 22 April, the Caminito del Rey reopened its gates to the public. The tourist attraction had to be temporarily closed on Monday 28 March, an action the president of the provincial authority, Elías Bemdodo deemed “essential”, but for which he had to issue an apology for not having communicated the closure well enough.
