Well done to all those involved in the Artwalk which was held last month in the village of Competa. Our special congratulations goes to Lieuwke Loth who, along with a great team, organised the event which is now in its 10th year. It is also with sadness that we announce it will be the last time she organises the Artwalk. The Grapevine has worked with Lieuwke for the last 5 years and she has always been professional, helpful and easy to work with. We would like to thank Lieuwke for everything she has achieved with the Artwalk and wish her well on the next challenge, whatever that may be. If you would like to offer support or organise the next Artwalk please contact Lieuwke via the artcompeta.com website. This month Competa hosts another event, Swim for Life on the 12th May to raise money for Cudeca. Both the Challenge and Elite Swim Teams are now full! A few extra volunteers to help with the stalls and swimmers would be helpful and the event organisers are now looking for donations towards the Tombola Table. If you would like to help see more details on page 50. Finally, some dates for the diary as the popular festival Aereo Internacional in Torre del Mar dates have now been released, they are the 27,28 & 29 July. Its a great event for all the family so see you there! Enjoy and Keep Reading The Editor

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update !
O
ne of the most senior members of Spain’s ruling conservative party is facing calls to quit after accusations emerged that she had faked a masters degree in law. Cristina Cifuentes, the president of the party’s Madrid branch and tipped as a possible successor to prime minister Mariano Rajoy, has been a member of the Popular Party (PP) for nearly 30 years but has been forced to cancel a number of public appearances since the scandal emerged. The 53-year-old is accused of manipulating grades and falsifying signatures on records of a postgraduate qualification she completed in 2012. The state prosecutor has launched a criminal investigation into the reports, with the criminal offence of falsifying public documents carrying a prison sentence of up to six years in Spanish law.

have now been removed from the shelves. They carry the lot number: 010DOP-18 or 015DOP18, with a manufacturing date of 01/19/18 (January 19, 2018) and a preferential use by date of 1/2020. It is believed the product could have been distributed across Spain’s autonomous communities of Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Basque Country, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia Navarra and Valencia, as well as Italy and Portugal. European authorities have also been informed through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). According to the UK's NHS norovirus, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, is one of the most common stomach bugs. It's also called the winter vomiting bug because it's more common in winter, although you can catch it at any time of the year.
T
he loss of a child cannot be forgotten no matter how many years have passed. If the child has been murdered, this loss is likely to be even harder to bear. More than 12,000 days had passed since May 24, 1985, when four-year-old Ana Isabel Fernández Sánchez disappeared. Her body was found two days later in a well. The crime took place in
Huétor Santillán, a small town located 20 minutes outside of Granada capital, and that today is home to 1,800 people. The same day the little girl’s body was discovered, the Civil Guard caught the man responsible: Enrique Sánchez. The 70-year-old father lunged at his daughter’s killer with a knife but only wounded him. Last month on April 13 – nearly 33 years after her death – Ana’s father, Joan José Fernández, found the murderer in a street in Alarcón in Granada. At around midday, Fernández launched himself upon Sánchez and stabbed him with a knife. But be it due to his age or the rapid response of police officers, Fernández only managed to wound his daughter’s killer. Sánchez walked away from the attack with deep cuts to his hands and nose, as well as multiple bruises. It does not appear the charges against Fernández will be very serious but it is possible that he will find himself once again before the judges. Only this time the roles will be reversed.

Barcelona-based YouTuber faces up to two years in prison over a video in which he fed Oreos filled with toothpaste to a homeless man and joked that it would help him with a longoverdue clean. Kanghua Ren known as ReSet to his more than a million subscribers - filmed himself filling the biscuits with toothpaste and replacing them in their packaging before feeding five of them to the homeless man in January last year. As the 52-year-old man - named by authorities as Gheorge L. - ate the cookies, ReSet jibed: “Maybe I’ve gone a bit far, but look at the positive side: this will help him clean his teeth. I think he hasn’t cleaned them since he became poor." He now faces a charge of a crime against moral integrity, with Spanish prosecutors seeking a sentence of two years in prison and an order to pay €30,000 in compensation to the homeless man.

ACTION 4 ANIMALS This Months Update
W
e currently have two dogs, rescued from the local campo and now urgently looking for their forever homes. Action for Animals have covered all the costs while they've been fostered by one of our volunteers, Julia Ruane, but Julia has so many dogs of her own, she really can't keep these two for much longer. They're mother and daughter but don't have to be rehomed together, even though it would be wonderful if somebody could adopt them both! The mother is eighteen months old and her daughter is four and a half months. Both dogs are friendly, affectionate and playful and weigh in at five kilos and just over four kilos respectively. Mother is house trained and pup is getting there too, with Julia's training. Originally, Julia was rather concerned that during the few months she'd been fostering her, the pup hadn't made any sounds at all and was worried that the dog might be mute. But on April 12th she finally barked for the very first time and we all breathed a sigh of relief. We've paid for the mother to be neutered and will also cover costs for the pup to be

neutered as soon as she's old enough. Back in February, a tiny kitten, weighing just two kilos, was found in the street suffering from dreadful injuries to her head. She was taken to Naturvets in Cómpeta, where resident vet Gunila operated to remove her badly damaged eye. Action for Animals funded the operation and her neutering and we're pleased to report that thanks to the amazing Naturvets team, she recovered wonderfully and was lucky to be rehomed by local animal lover, Laura Campbell. As you can see from the photo, it was a very happy ending for little Gypsy! A couple of weeks ago we were given a donation in our charity shop and we're trying to trace the person who gave it to us, as we believe they may have given something unintentionally. The donation was several rucksack type bags, one of which contained something valuable, which we think had been left in the bag by mistake. If you think it might be yours, please contact us.
€190! If you'd like to book a table for our next one please contact Megan on 642199382 And finally... We're all becoming more and more aware of the effect that plastic has on our environment. As a symbol of our disposable consumer society, single use plastic bags are a major plague for the environment and the oceans. They have serious consequences on the ecosystem, on marine animals and on mankind. For these reasons, in our charity shop we're trying to encourage our customers to bring their own reusable bags when possible and say no to single use plastic bags. Next time you shop with us, we hope you'll support us on our quest to ban the bag! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the income tax applicable to non-resident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210).
AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Time to Formally Become a Tax Resident in Spain
A
ccording to the Spanish Law all individuals who are living in Spain for more than 183 days a year are tax residents in Spain and have to pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income.
paying taxes and without having the legal right to get them. The Spanish Government has decided to be stricter with the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish health cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall (called “Empadronamiento) in order to get treatment.
Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (for more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit annual tax returns out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse, A Tax return should be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain.
Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2017, This should be done during the months of May and June 2018. There are many good reasons for doing this. It will enable foreign residents to:
Up to date, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities are aware of this important group of people. Now the situation has changed, due to the financial crisis, the Spanish Government intends to tighten up its control of all foreigners living in Spain to ensure that they pay taxes in Spain where due, and thus avoid thousands of people receiving free health services without
1. Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable. 2. Have the legal right to receive a health card which allows access to the Spanish Public health system. 3. Avoid the 3 % withholding tax when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain.

It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points. CONCLUSION: If you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days a yea) we would recommend that you submit an annual income tax return during the months of May and June for the tax year 2017. By doing this, you will confirm to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing legally in Spain and duly paying their taxes here. For further advice on this matter or to arrange a no obligation meeting to discuss your particular circumstances in detail, please contact us. Jose M. Lopez-Avalos Tel. Situated between the villages of Cรณmpeta and Canillas de Albaida you have on one side the southern slopes of the spectacular mountains of the Sierra Almijara and views all the way to the mediterranian coast on the other side. Los Caballos del Mosquin was founded in 1999 by Eva Maria

DE TROPEN
®
Quality Outdoor Furniture Retail Outlet
T
his month I met with Marcel owner of De Tropen®, an outdoor furniture retail outlet, located on the El Ingenio roundabout, exit 272 of the motorway. It is an impressive building of over 13,000sqm with a large car-park out front (used to be a garden centre a few years back). Access is from the behind the petrol station off the first roundabout going into Velez Malaga. Marcel moved to Spain 15 years ago from Holland for a better quality of life. Back in Holland he imported and exported outdoor furniture to businesses , so he decided to use his contacts and experience and set up a similar model but selling directly to the public here in Spain. Initially the business started in Motril and over time he built up an excellent reputation for providing high quality products whilst keeping the costs as low as possible. Marcel explained their commercial strategy is based in the direct import of products, counting on
30 The Grapevine
the best manufacturers located in different places of the world, contributing to the principle to produce and market high quality furniture at highly competitive prices. He went on to explain their philosophy, which he believes is to bring competitive furniture products to the market in combination with their business partners, who also maintain excellent customer service in order to achieve absolute customer satisfaction. As a result of his strategy and philosophy the outlet in Motril eventually wasn't big enough and along with people driving some distance to view the furniture he started to look for bigger premises in a more central location. At the beginning of February he opened the doors to the new location and has been overwhelmed by the number of customers already. He is working long hours and still lives in Motril and travels to the centre every day (except Sunday) as he hasn't found the time to find a place to live nearer work! More staff will be employed over the coming weeks
As you arrive at the store to the left is the showroom and to the right is the warehouse both of massive proportions! I wondered round the showroom noticing the large range of furniture collections displayed beautifully and laid out so you could imagine yourself relaxing on the items or sitting on the comfortable chairs enjoying a long leisurely lunch in the sun! Although, if you don't like sitting in the sun they have that covered too as the store stocks a range of shade solutions. Once you have chosen what you want from the showroom all items are kept in store so you can take it away then and there or if it is too large to fit in the car they will organise delivery free of charge. The furniture collections include, besides their own brand De Tropen®, Hartman, Apple Bee, SUNS and Jamie Oliver's outdoor furniture. The ranges include hand-made and machine made furniture of different materials like synthetic fibre, aluminium, textilene, stainless steel & tropical wood. There is something for every type of garden, balcony or conservatory at De Tropen®. If you first want to get an idea of what´s in store take a look on their comprehensive website where you can view the collections, order, and pay and have the items delivered direct to your door. Alternatively, visit the store, let Marcel make you a coffee while you wander round and enjoy the beautiful outdoor furniture and the only problem you will have is what to choose! Open every day (except Sundays) 10.00 to 20.00. See advert opposite

SPINACH AND RICOTTA LASAGNE Serves 6-8, Prep time 45 min, oven time 30 min
A
twist on the classic lasagne with a creamy spinach and ricotta filling. This vegetarian version is finished off with slices of mozzarella, creating an alluring, cheesy topping.I
4 medium free-range egg yolks Grated zest 1 lemon Pinch freshly grated nutmeg 40g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated You’ll also need… 2 litre baking dish
INGREDIENTS 50g pack fresh lasagne sheets 125g mozzarella, sliced 30g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated For the tomato sauce Glug olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 150ml red wine 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 1 tsp sugar 2 tbsp vegetarian Worcester sauce (we like Biona, from Holland & Barrett and Ocado) 2 tbsp tomato purée Bunch fresh basil, chopped For the spinach and ricotta sauce 375g spinach Knob of butter 500g ricotta 250g mascarpone
46 The Grapevine
METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas 6. Heat the oil in a medium pan, then fry the onion for 6-8 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry for a minute, then add the red wine. Turn up the heat and bubble for 3-4 minutes to reduce by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Add the basil and season. 2.Meanwhile, put the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until the spinach has wilted. Drain in a colander, then wrap in a clean Jcloth and squeeze out any excess water. Roughly chop, then mix with the rest of the spinach/ricotta sauce
ingredients. Taste and season. 3.Spread a little of the spinach and ricotta sauce over the base of the baking dish, then cover with slightly overlapping lasagne sheets. Pour over a third of the remaining white sauce, sprinkle over a little of the grated cheese and top with half the tomato sauce. Cover with another layer of lasagne sheets, top with half the remaining white sauce, then all the remaining red sauce. Add the final layer of lasagne sheets, then spread with the rest of the white sauce. Scatter with the remaining grated cheese. 4.Top with the mozzarella slices, then the 30g parmesan and bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.) PLAZA LOUNGE BAR Fabulous Food in Benamargosa
B
efore I arrived at the Plaza Lounge Bar in Benamargosa, I took a look at their Facebook page and I thought wow what fabulous food! Taking pictures of food isn’t the easiest thing to do but they had it spot on. The pictures of the Sunday Carvery and the Friday Countrymans Lunch dishes looked incredible and having never been to this bar before I was looking forward to meeting Audrey the owner. Benamargosa village can be easily found from the El Ingenio motorway turn off, but instead of going towards the coast, head towards Velez Malaga and keep going. When you see El Cruce Restaurant take the left turn here, which is signposted towards Benamargosa, then keep going until you enter the inland village. You can park near the Plaza Restaurant but for some it might be easier, due to the narrow streets, to park in the car park or by the petrol station and then take the road by the church up to the small plaza which I did. After a short stroll up to the pretty plaza I found the Plaza Lounge Bar and I met Audrey who is fun,

bubbly and extremely likeable. Her passion for food and what she has done with the bar is obvious and infectious. Audrey explained she came to Spain with her husband Richard 14 years ago. She is originally from South Africa and Richard is from England. Whilst living in Benamargosa themselves they used to come into the Plaza Bar to use the internet but it was a very different bar in those days! One day Audrey asked if she could take over the kitchen for the weekends and she would make money from the food and the owner from the drinks. This proved successful for a while, then 7 years ago she was asked to take it on permanently. After much deliberation she and Richard agreed. However, that was only the start; Audrey knew she had to change the décor and its reputation. Slowly, over time, she has most definitely done this. Using Audrey’s own words she now describes her restaurant as “a characteristic restaurant bar situated in the tranquil and historic Plaza of Benamargosa. The Country Style Kitchen/Grill offers good home cooking and Sunday Lunch is the fantastic “Country Carvery” not to be missed eat as
The Plaza Lounge Bar now attracts customers from all over and all different nationalities wanting to taste the supurb home cooked food. The Sunday carvery is definitely a hit; if you don’t book you really will be disappointed or have to wait a while for a table. It is a traditional Carvery where you can eat us much meat, vegetables and whatever else is on offer as you like. The gravy is also sold to customers as they have said how good it is, so she sells it by the bottle! The roast potatoes are just the best, Audrey boasts and she won’t give out her recipe for them or even explain how they turn out so good! In addition to the" Sunday Carvey" the Plaza Lounge Bar offers a Friday "Countryman’s Lunch", again fabulous home cooked dishes such as Lancashire Hotpot, Durban lamb Curry, Beef and Guinness Pies, many Mediterrean dishes, and fantastic steaks. Not forgetting the "Ploughmans Platter" or Cheese Board ! In addition to the Carvery and Friday lunch menu they are open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings for Menu del Noche which is a 3 course menu, with a choice of dishes for € 9.95 , or just choose from the normal menu boards. The menu regularly changes, according to the chef's fancy, but it is always home cooked food. The Plaza Lounge Bar is really a diamond in the middle of nowhere! My taste buds have most definitely been tickled and I will be booking a table for the family as I can’t wait to try the food itself. Looking forward to a great afternoon out! 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FESTIVAL OF ART A look back on Last Months Artwalk in Competa
O
n the 31st of March, 1st, 3rd and 4th of April the the art studios and other spaces in Competa opened their doors. Music filled the streets along with many people with the Art Walk leaflet in their hands. It was a big cultural event for the Axarquia region. People who loved art came to Cรณmpeta to enjoy all that was offered over those few days. Both the art event and the village were very lucky to have 4 beautiful days without rain and with sun. In total more than 35 international artists presented their works! From far afield art-lovers came to the village for example from Marbella, Malaga, Almunecar, Granada etc. The impressive programme was complemented by 7 live music performances. Most restaurants were fully booked, and the musicians played happily for long hours! The 5 workshops were successful, most of them were also fully booked. Pepe gave twice an interesting raku, ceramic workshop. The English artist George Kowzan painted on panels a design inspired by Lieuwke Loths art. It is now installed permanently on the terrace

wall of the Teteria (see picture). Of course the restaurant owners are also really happy with this new colourfull addition!
beautiful, charming mountain village for the 1st time and said they'll definitely come back next year and even book an over night stay.
Children of the primary school entered a colouring competition and all the results were shown on the wall of the school.
Hopefully there will be a 'next year' Art Walk however, Lieuwke has decided to stop organising it after 5 successful years. She upgraded the event to a higher and more professional level, and now it attracts many people from a wide area. She is now looking for people who would like to help organise the art event, because it would be a pity to have to stop this 'ritual' of an annual art walk during tSemana Santa. If you're interested and/ or you would like to offer support to the event . please contact her via the artcompeta.com website.
Dutch artist, and gallery owner Lieuwke Loth and her team put together a beautiful event that many people enjoyed very much. Restaurant owners and accommodation owners were happy with the amount of people who came to the event. The village was vibrant. Artists were glad to be able to show and also sell their art. Visitors were delighted to see so much art and have the chance to talk with artists, they enjoyed the spectacular views, the good atmosphere, the looks of the beautiful authentic streets and the good food in the restaurants. The press helped a lot to promote and announce the event. The Art Walk organisation and artists are grateful for the support they received from the press and the sponsors. Some visitors discovered the
A big thanks to all the artists and visitors and musicians who made it a successful & joyful event! If the 11th Art Walk can be organised, more information will also be available at www.facebook.com/artcompeta and the website: www.artcompeta.com

WHAT IS THE FESTIVAL OF SAN ISIDRO? Parades, concerts, dance… anything goes when it comes to paying tribute to the saint.
T
his month, Madrid honours its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, offering the very best of the city and showcasing its trademark hospitality. Between 11th and 15th May, Madrid celebrates a series of festivities in honour of its patron saint, with music, shows, and a whole host of activities for the whole family. A comprehensive cultural and recreational programme that combines tradition and modernity. Various different aeas host free activities for all the family. Emblematic places such as the Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas and Pradera de San Isidro park provide the backdrop for the 'Gigantes y Cabezudos' parade, and unforgettable evenings of Zarzuela and comic opera, among a whole host of other activities. Furthermore, many other parts of the city (Escenario Puerta del Ángel, the Temple of Debod, the

Rose Garden in the Parque del Oeste, Plaza de Oriente, Plaza Sánchez Bustillo, Plaza Conde de Barajas, Plaza de Los Carros...) provide the setting for countless concerts. Religious acts From 6 to 15 May, the traditional religious ceremonies take place: the blessing of the water from the Font and consecration in honour of the saint, the Quinary in honour of San Isidro, mass at the Colegiata de San Isidro, Eucharist in the Chapel of the Cuadra de San Isidro, and the Pilgrimage Mass in La Pradera. Celebrations Celebrations begin with a parade of big-headed dolls that departs from the heart of the city and precedes the opening speech, delivered at Plaza de la Villa. Then there comes a zarzuela performance and popular music concert. The Chotis is a popular dance associated with these festivities. Originally from Bohemia, the schottische became popular in the 19th century.
During the dance, the chulapa wearing a large Manila shawl draped over her shoulders, a scarf around her head with a carnation sticking out underneath, and a polka dot fitted dressdances around the chulapo who is dressed in black trousers, a waistcoat with a carnation in the lapel and a parpusa hat –who, in turn, spins around on the spot with his gaze always fixed in front of him. The best place to watch them dance is Las Vistillas garden, the epicentre of the festivities and is filled with traditional music and indie sounds. On stage at Puerta del Ángel they put on a rock marathon, aimed at raising awareness of efficient energy use, responsible consumption and environmental protection. The Pottery Fair in Plaza de las Comendadoras and the light and sound show in El Retiro Park are also musts during the Feast of Saint Isidro One of the most celebrated

holidays of Madrid is held on May 15, the Feast Day of San Isidro who is the city's patron saint as well as the patron saint of farmers. The traditional festival and feast are held in an open-air area known as the Pradera del Santo. Origins San IsidroSan Isidro was born in Madrid in 1082 and died in 1172. Legend has it that while the saint was praying, two angels ploughed the land for him. Amongst the miracles attributed to him, hagiographers say that once when he was building a well, his son fell in; but through his mediation he was miraculously brought back to the parapet when the water level rose causing the child to float. Tradition also tells that San Isidro miraculously made a spring gush by banging the ground while he was ploughing. A hermitage dedicated to the saint was built on this spot in 1528, ordered by the Empress Isabel, after Prince Felipe came back into health by

drinking water from the spring. Later, Baltasar de Zúñiga, Marquess of Valero, built the current day hermitage, with a single nave and a dome. In 1811 the Sacramental Cemetery San Isidro was built on the apse. San Isidro Museum If you wish to learn more about San Isidro you should visit the museum dedicated to this saint (Plaza de San Andrés, 2; Telephone: 91 366 74 15). Although it has changed names at different points in time, it is popularly known as the Casa de San Isidro since tradition has it that this was the house of the Vargas, gentlemen of San Isidro, and the saint lived and died here. The building was constructed in the 16th century by the Luján family. When the Royal Court was transferred to Madrid, this was the residence of Nuncio until half way through the 17th century. Later, and until well into the 19th century, the Count and Countess of Paredes acquired the building,
although it then entered a period of decline. In 1974, following an archaeological excavation, the whole complex was demolished and rebuilt. A visit to the Museum entitles you to a visit to the Pozo del Milagro, or Miracle Well, where San Isidro supposedly saved his son by causing the water level to rise. San Isidro is a citywide festival, pure and simple, but unlike San Fermín in Pamplona or Las Fallas in Valencia, it isn’t really a great source of local pride or identity for the city of Madrid. Many residents take advantage of the three-day weekend to travel elsewhere—often back to their hometowns—or to get a bit of Spring cleaning done in the spare time off work. This should come as little surprise. Madrid is the great Spanish melting pot, a cultural and economic center that pulls people in from across the country but never fully instills in them the type of local identity that underpins the more famous Spanish festivals.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Manna from Heaven, the Tamarisk Tree.
D
uring a recent visit to San Sebastian – that capital of all things food like – I was absolutely stunned not only by those edible delights, pintxos, (equivalent of our tapas) but also by their tamarisk trees. If food reigns there, the tamarisks come a close second. The darlings of the Donostians, they are planted in great numbers all over the city but are particularly good in the Parque Alderdi-Eder which forms a lovely backdrop to the elegant Playa de la Concha, recently voted best European beach. The great gardener Pierre Ducasse planted the first

tamarisks in San Sebastian in 1885. He, apparently, wanted to emulate the avenues of tamarisks he had seen all over the Costa Azul. So loved has the tree become that it has its own name in Euskera – milazka. Or, in Catalan, taray or tamarisco. It is said to be the tree that gives rise to the expression Manna from Heaven. The sweet and sticky resin exuded by the trees attracted insects that turned the sap into honeydew; when the Israelites were starving in the desert, they saw these golden drops of honeydew under the trees and fell upon them exclaiming Manna (literally meaning 'what is that?'). Thus Manna from Heaven!
In San Sebastian, throughout Navarra and many other coastal areas the tree used is tamarix gallica, or French tamarisk, a native to Saudi Arabia and the Sinai Peninsula but now naturalised throughout much of the Mediterranean. It is a tough tree, well able to stand up to the fierce winds from the Bay of Biscay and it is much planted to fix sand dunes and coastal strips, marshy ground etc. Their leaves are small, resembling soft scales or needles; they resist drought and have salt-secreting glands. Their ability to accumulate salt and then excrete it prevents less salt-tolerant plants from growing at their base, thus eliminating competition. With a quick rate of growth, they make excellent

enjoying the sun; trees and people seemed in happy harmony, growing old gracefully together, helped along by modern technology.
The flowering is both pretty and There are some 50 species unexpected, as they seem to grown across Europe, North Africa, Asia and India but t. gallica suddenly explode, from bare and even dead-looking wood, into a is the most common to us. pink fluff, diaphanous and dreamy Notably, there are also t. looking but, in reality, tough as tetrandra, which is one of the earliest to flower, and t. ramosissima from Russia with bluegrey leaves, a later flowerer. They will naturally grow to 5m or 6m, sometimes larger in kinder conditions, but they can be pruned to limit that size. Extremely exposed positions will naturally stunt their growth as they twist and gnarl in Tamarix Gallica in San Sebastian strong winds. What catches the eye with the San Sebastian trees is the fact that they are trees and old and gnarled into fantastical shapes. They looked every bit as striking as any ancient olive or oak. Tamarisks are more often seen shrubby; like pomegranates they have a great ability to leaf all the way up the trunk and are usually multi-trunked. Often they are pollarded to give lots of fresh young growth and denser wind protection in harsh conditions. The gardeners in San Sebastian must work hard indeed, in the early years of planting, to train that single clean trunk but it is worth every effort – rarely have I seen trees so managed and so stunning. The twisted forms are living sculptures. The tamarisk is also not long lived and one can see their man-made crutches there very clearly, props of steel. We noticed, and commented upon, the large numbers of elderly people out in wheelchairs,

old boots! I was sorry to have missed the flowering in San Sebastian because it has to be spectacular. Our plants in the garden centre are just starting to come into flower now, mid-April, perhaps a touch later than usual because of the cold conditions recently; they will leaf up after flowering. In gardens, their soft, feathery nature works well with ornamental grasses and daisylike perennials – verbena bonariensis would be another perfect companion for a natural look. Dry gravel gardens are good backdrops for their softness too, especially as they become very drought resistant. I also like the thought of a grove of tamarisk trees under-planted with spring bulbs – a picture in its season and tough enough to survive hot summers without much irrigation.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH The concert we had hoped to stage on April 21st had to be cancelled due to poor ticket sales. It aspired to be a wonderful experience, but as the RBL is a charity, we cannot run events at a loss and so reluctantly we had to take the decision to cancel. To anyone who was hoping to go and is disappointed, we can only apologise and hope that you can understand our reasoning. It should also be said that it is a major disappointment to the choir who worked hard under their director Eusebio, to provide us with a superb evening of music. To them, we can only say, we are so sorry, and hopefully we can organise something at a later date. Our monthly lunches continue and as always I say, these are open to anyone. You don't have to have been a serviceman or woman, you don't have to be British, you don't have to be resident in Spain, and we are not even interested in your religion, colour or creed. We would just like to extend a welcome to anyone who is interested in our work.
