an you imagine no gasolinera in Cómpeta? What a disaster that would be! Can you imagine the impact on the area? It would affect our lives considerably when you think about it. The Ayuntamiento would have to refuel all it’s vehicles on the coast & that would have an effect on everyone in the community because the cost of running the services would obviously increase. They could not buy in bulk as it is not legal to store fuel in any great quantity outside of a licensed store. Where would local business people refuel their vehicles? Where would you buy your gas in the lightweight bottles? Where would you go for a loaf of bread at 9 PM? Where would you go when you had a puncture, or if your wheelbarrow had a blowout? If you worked in the campo & had a 50 cc motorbike, would you be able to refuel it? Good questions that deserve a good answer. And here is that answer. Buy your petrol & diesel in Cómpeta & save our gasolinera. You may have noticed that there is some work going on there at the moment, this is for the installation of Stage 1 vapour recovery. That is where the vapour that used to just vent off to atmosphere now has to be collected in the road tanker. This was legislated for quite some time ago dependant on the volume of fuel sold, so based on volume of sales before the crisis this work was due to commence around now anyway. But, here is the problem, since fuel prices went crazy, sales have dropped by a huge percentage in Cómpeta gasolinera, but the authorities that control the way gas stations operate have not moved the goal posts & the work now has to be done to comply with what was law a few years ago, not on the actual situation at the moment

and, of course, there is no financial assistance available. The situation was in the balance for some time. Did Antonio, the proprietor find the money to do this essential work? Or did he close down the gasolinera? After some serious consideration for the community & the future of his family, he decided to go ahead with the work & keep our gasolinera open. Thank you Antonio. But it doesn’t end there, legislation, as we all know, has a habit of jumping up & biting us on a regular basis & gas station legislation is worse than many other types. Within a short period of time, stage 2 vapour recovery will become law & that will be even more expensive. This piece of legislation stipulates that the vapour has to be collected at the pump nozzle & returned into the main storage tank. The underground work for this is being done along with the stage 1b work, but, within the next couple of years new pumps will have to be installed & that is another major expense. This is not propaganda, or a sob story, this is about keeping our gasolinera open, not just for Antonio & his family, but for us, the people of Cómpeta, whatever our nationality! The solution is easy! Just buy your fuel here in the town, it generally isn’t that much more expensive than on the coast. Buy your tyres & car batteries, they are fitted free. I have my oil & filters changed there, same price, or cheaper than at the coast. And the people that work there are friendly & extremely helpful. John Concerned Resident of Cómpeta

The Sagest of Plants.

ages display an incredible diversity with around 900 species worldwide, some 500 of these originating in Texas and Arizona, Mexico, Central and South America. The remaining 400 species, or so, are spread across Europe and Asia. The more flamboyantly coloured ones tend to come from the Americas; European and Asian sages are often soft blues, lilacs and purples. Few plants have such a varied palette with both true blue and vivid scarlet, moody magentas, subtle apricots, black and rich royal purples. There are shrubs, woody perennials and annuals, most with the typical angular stems. The typical red-flowering annual has notoriety as one of the most loved/hated plants! I have to say I go on the hate list – they’re too much like lines of soldiers in dress uniform. There are so many more worth drooling over. Salvia argentea, silver sage. This is one of my favourites; its massive downy silver leaves, crumpled and silky, are just made for stroking! Newly emerging leaves are heavily covered in downy hairs, giving the entire plant a woolly lunar appearance. Mature leaves green up a little but, strangely enough, they change to silver again in cold dry conditions. A native of S. Europe and N.W. Africa, the hotter it gets, the more the plant seems to like it. In cool, wet climes, it is a short-lived perennial but here it can live for many years, spreading to around 1m across with individual leaves often 30cm long. In its second year of life, candelabra-like flower stalks appear in springtime from the flat rosettes of leaves. The plumes of white flowers, often tinged with soft pink or

yellow, are prettily held over the leaves – a picture of silvery-whiteness that contrasts beautifully with other plants. If you want your plant to last better, cut the flower stalks out before they set seed. A sun-lover, drought resistant and liking alkaline soils, this is a perfect plant for Mediterranean gardeners. Salvia leucantha, Mexican bush sage. I’m a great fan of ‘touchy feely’ plants, so this has to be another all-time favourite of mine. The arching shrub, to around 1m x 1m, bears attractive and aromatic foliage with long narrow felted leaves. But it’s the flowers that really make this plant special. They are white but nestled in a deep velvety purple calyx, in tightly packed spikes - just right to fondle and stroke! This is another great plant for Mediterranean gardens, a real sun-lover and becoming drought-resistant with a very long flowering period. Like buddleja, it draws in butterflies from far and wide. Try it as a low hedging plant, tough and impressive. Distantly related to the culinary sage, it is a closer family member of salvia divinorum, the renowned hallucinogenic plant (described below). Salvia leucantha is a common ingredient in herbal tobaccos, though I’d guess it doesn’t have the same effects as s. divinorum – or, at least, it has no notoriety as such! Salvia divinorum, sage of the seers, sheperdess’s herb. This salvia is a sprawling perennial native to tropical rain forests of Mexico. It thrives in warm temperatures with high humidity and dappled shade – so not perfect for our gardens here – full

sun will soon kill this plant. It is one of the rarest shamanic plants known today and has been used for centuries by the curanderos to lead them into trance-like states with visionary insight into healing. The leaves contain the extremely potent hallucinogenic and psychedelic drug Salvinorin A. Its effects are considered unpleasant! The plants like a lot of root space and, under ideal conditions, can grow to 2m high in 6 months. The hollow square stems bend under the weight of the large leaves; where they touch the ground roots will grow and send up new plant. The flowers are white and purple, sparsely produced and viable seed is extremely rare. Salvia farinacea, mealy sage. One of the most famous cultivars is called ‘Victoria Blue’ and so famous is it that plants are often just named Victoria. They will reach about 50cm tall and lavishly send up deep blue flower spikes. They form a wonderful carpet of blueness – a great contrast plant and equally good in pots. Water young plants initially but they will become drought tolerant once established. Salvia greggii, autumn sage, and salvia microphylla, blackcurrant sage. It is quite difficult to differentiate between these two salvias. They are closely related and frequently hybridise, to add to the confusion! They both form bushy plants with lots of flowers in shades of white, pink, magenta, apricot, lavender, purple and scarlet. Leaves of s. greggii have smooth margins whilst those of s. microphylla are serrated and smell of blackcurrants. Both reach around 1m tall. Winter prune in stages – a full haircut can sometimes kill them. Salvia nemorosa, meadow sage. A clump forming perennial which produces lots of violet-blue flower spikes from spring through to late autumn. Grow it in well-drained soil in full sun. It dislikes long periods of wetness, though is one of the best coldhardy sages, supporting several degrees of freezing if it is a dry cold. To 75 cm tall with a spread of 50cm, they attract butterflies and bees in hordes. Brillantaisia ulugurica. giant sage. A classic example of how common names can confuse as this is not a true sage! It belongs to the family acanthaceae; real sages belong to the mint family, lamiaceae. A shrub/small tree of Central Africa with fabulous ribbed leaves and blue-purple hooded flowers popular with bees. Quite a rarity in the wild though, when happy, it grows rapidly forming a big impact plant. One that will certainly get everyone guessing!

Multicultural Night of Music

he Multicultural Night of Music held in Canillas de Albaida on Sunday October 9 as part of Canillas Culture Week was a tremendous success. The Plaza was packed with people enjoying the very varied styles of music performed. The evening was hosted wonderfully by Inez Leniere and Roger Sparks and began with the traditional tuneful songs and percussion of El Grupo de Zambombas de Canillas de Albaida. Acoustic Roots with Geoff Murrell on vocals and Paul Hanaway on keyboards followed with a relatively chilled set to get the ball rolling. The very exciting percussion group, African Roots had the crowd spellbound with their enthusiasm and energy, and local vocal group, One Voice, directed by Tom Robinson worked their way through various songs in 4 part harmony in their own inimitable style. Belgian Flamenco guitar player, Pedro Sauviller demonstrated abley that you don’t have to be Spanish to play wonderful Flamenco and young local Spanish group, Al Compás, consisting of Isabel, Marta and Rafa played and sang to a rapt audience.One of the highlights of the night had to be the Irish dancing performed by Grainnie

McCoy followed by the ceilidh dance, The Bridge of Athlone, in which around 24 people took part, including the Mayor. The night was rounded off with virtually everyone in the Plaza dancing to a lively last set by Acoustic Roots, Geoff Murrell and Paul Hanaway. Then the Grand Finale....All the performes took to the stage and gave their excellent rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. Altogether a fantastic night of music from around the World performed by many different nationalities. Veterinary Clinics are Businesses. A

few weeks ago we had another busy day in our Competa clinic. Two female street cats had been brought in to be spayed and we managed to fit the operations in between the consultations. Once wild cats get caged and brought to the vets for operation and check-up, it needs to be done as soon as possible as we try to minimize the stress for them as much as possible: minimum handling and quiet surroundings until they're asleep, and we try to get them picked up before they are fully awake to again reduce stress levels. At the same time, a client brought in a lovely big, bouncy dog roaming alone on the street. While we were trying to find a solution as to what to do with the dog, the client said something we often hear: â&#x20AC;&#x153;you vets should really do more about all these animals running in the streetsâ&#x20AC;?. And I think it's important we raise the question HOW? As much as we would like to help all animals, and work as hard as we can to ensure a happy result for every abandoned/lost animal we encounter, we have our limitations, which are basically time and money. The time needed to care for these animals is impossible for us to achieve whilst running the clinics, attending emergencies, studying and attending conferences to keep our knowledge up to date, this is all before we take into account our personal lives (partners, children, maintaining the home, sleep, cookingâ&#x20AC;Ś). Our working day rarely ends when the clinic is closed; recently we had a litter of abandoned pups which needed bottle fedding every three hours, this alone is very time consuming

Financially, (especially in these difficult times) businesses need to be extra careful. A good amount of time and money has been spent on our clinics to have all the facilities necessary to take good care of the pets and their owners. A lot is expected of vets to take on abandoned animals without considering the cost implications .However, people must be aware that it costs us no less to treat abandoned animals as opposed to animals in an established home; expenses such as medication, anaesthesia, needles, gauze, catheters, drips, syringes, cleaning products, blankets, food, litter, time, knowledge and experience are the same either way. What is the solution and where does the responsibility lie? We do our best by working with local charities and offering promotions on castrations, vaccinations and microchips. We have also created a project where we go out to the schools and teach the kids to be responsible with animals; it has taken a lot of time and energy. At the end of the day, it is the pet owners that need to castrate their animals or take responsibility for any litters that may arrive. People must be aware that by picking up abandoned animals they are accepting responsibility for them, even for a short time whilst looking for a home. That responsibility cannot be then shifted on to your vet; however we try to help as much as we can by helping in the search for the right home, giving advice and treating these animals for a reduced price. Séamus Lynch

found Séamus to be an interesting man. Born in Dublin, he studied Zoology and Biochemistry at Dublin University. Then continued to an MSc and a PhD in the field of medicine at Birmingham University in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. After a WHO postdoctoral fellowship to the US at the Mayo Clinic he went back to a post in the Women’s Hospital and eventually became an NHS consultant and Director of Laboratory Hormone Services for the West Midlands. He took early retirement at 50 years of age and opened up his own research laboratory manufacturing sex hormones and antibodies. He later transferred this business to a laboratory in Kent where it continues today. He also became a freelance consultant for the International Atomic Energy Agency in South East Asia and Africa. Séamus met his fashion designer partner David when he was completing his PhD. Before they both fully retired they started to look for a place abroad and over a 5 year period, they took 2 or 3 months a year to explore areas of Spain in a caravan. They came across Cómpeta purely by chance. They maintain that if it had not been raining so much on the coast they would never have visited the village! It was a rainy stay in Almeria that led them to Torre del Mar where it continued to rain, so they decided to go inland and explore extremely cheap and run down white village houses. They first visited Sedella – it was like Brigadoon – appearing out of the mist. The estate agent there advised them to have a look in Cómpeta. Once they saw the place, they loved it and bought a not so run down nor cheap village house on their first visit.

They have been living part-time in Cómpeta since 2000 and it was while living in the village that Séamus joined a pottery class taught by Moira Schepel. David actively encouraged (brow beat) him to go to the class, as he knew it was something he had always wanted to do. With David’s encouragement and the atmosphere of Moira’s studio and classes Séamus began to create. His initial work was very much inspired by his Celtic roots, with his designs incorporating Celtic motifs and symbols. Now with a bit more confidence he creates an array of objects using different styles not just in pottery but also in mosaics. Séamus is reticent to talk about and show his work. Coming to pottery late in life has meant he is still learning and his confidence is still growing. However, his work is great and it has proved successful when displayed in the CompetaArt walkabout and the Brighton Art festival. Despite this success, Séamus still sees his pottery and mosaics as a hobby and looking round his home it has also been a fantastic way to adorn it! He has found joining the CompetaArt group especially helpful, as he has made friends with artists and creative people from many countries, all with a common interest and love for Arts and Crafts, which has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him.

What is Classical Music?

iscovering the different textures and styles to be found in music has become an important part of music teaching. In all music examinations, whether it be an eight year old taking grade two violin, or a student taking a degree, the candidates are required to recognize, by listening, the different periods to be found in music history. When I was teaching GCSE and A level Music, it did not help, when pupils reported that someone on Classic FM had said that Bach composed Classical music. As I had just succeeded in convincing the class that he was a Baroque composer, I would tear my hair out. (Those who know me can see the evidence.) I don’t know of any other academic subject where both radio and TV quiz shows get it wrong. When I was studying to be a performer, it was essential to have a grasp of the different periods of music history, because certain aspects of performing have changed through the years. Just to give one example, a Baroque Allegro was slower than in Classical times and has gradually quickened through the ages. Most lovers of popular music are aware of the many varieties of style. It probably all began with the African slaves incorporating their natural rhythms and harmonies, into their negro spirituals. Spirituals developed into Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and Dixieland. New ways of expressing popular songs were coming from all over the world. In England Victorian ballads were pointing the way towards the rise of the crooners of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40,s. And so it went on with one form of pop growing from another ...... the big band era, modern jazz, rock and roll, reggae, rap, heavy metal ....... the list is endless and I’m certain that there is still more to come. Now for the bee in my bonnet! Why is it that no

one refers to the great Elvis as an exponent of heavy metal? (You’re laughing at me.) Are the members ‘Take That’ great rappers? or does ‘Madonna’ sing reggae? (you’re splitting your sides.) Fans are clued up and don’t make great goofs like that. So it really gets me hot under the collar when I hear virtually everyone use the term ‘Classical’ for any music that isn’t pop. The bee in my bonnet has just become a hornet in my Y fronts. Just like popular music, serious music is divided into periods and styles that evolved, as each successive era developed and grew from its predecessor. Renaissance developed into Rococo which in turn became Baroque. Composers were influenced by similar developments in art and architecture. Each of these early styles had quite complex forms of composition. In fact Wagner once commented that Baroque music was knitted twine. The main composers of these early years were Byrd, Purcell, Vivaldi, Bach and Handel. I stress that they did not write Classical music. Haydn, born in 1732, must have been well versed in Baroque writing as this era did not end until the 1750’s. He was the front runner in the development of Classical music. Mozart took up the reins and followed in his footsteps although it has to be said that some of Mozart’s later works have a strong Baroque flavour. The term ‘Classical’ means strict. Classical music was composed to very strict rules. The harmonies had to follow given chord progressions. The form or shape of compositions had to follow one of six set patterns. Composers felt caged in. There was little freedom to express their feelings. So it was no great surprise that when Beethoven came along, (born in 1770) he was more than dissatisfied with what he had to play with. Haydn,

his composition teacher, drummed the rules into him, but by his 3rd (‘Eroica’) symphony, the rule book had been well and truly flung out of the window and the seeds of the new Romantic period had been sown. It is said that Classical music dates from 1750 to 1830 but it was dead in the water by the turn of the century. Of course there is no cut off point to any of the changes of eras. There were periods of overlap. Mendelssohn and Brahms are classed as a Romantic composers but there is more Classical music to be found in some of their works than in some of Beethoven’s . Generally, Romantic music dates from 1830 to 1900. The term means freedom and composers used this freedom to bend the rules and be more expressive. Composers of this era included Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Tchaikovsky. Romanticism spread its wings in a variety of directions. Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Sibelius and Smetana incorporated their country’s folk music into their compositions and this gave birth to Nationalism. Impressionism was a musical way of expressing the merging the colours as found in the paintings of Monet and Renoir. Composers did this by merging the harmonies. Ravel,

Poulenc and Debussy were influenced by art works of this genre. 20th century music took freedom of composition to its extreme and is the furthest removed from classical music. It ignored virtually all sense of form, melody and harmony. Neo Classical music by composers such as Shostakovich and Stravinsky restored this by giving their works (still in the 20th century style) form and recognisable melodies. If there are so many types of serious music, why is it that the one term that most people use has the shortest life span in music history? Each period of music history had its own distinct fingerprint and it is this, that today’s music student has to recognise. So, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Shakespeare was right and I must learn to stop being a one man campaign. As Shakespeare might have put it, I must suffer the stings and bites of outrageous fortune.

SCHMID S.C. month school exchange in the UK prior to their move to Spain. Of course since then their English has just continued to improve through practice with their vast amount of English friends and clients.

onstrucciones Schmid was set up 9 years ago by German brothers Florian and Jan Schmid. They are equal partners but both bring different qualities to the business which compliments each other. This has meant they have not had a serious disagreement in all the years they have worked together! Jan is happy to provide most of the customer contact whilst Florian is happy to get on with the job in hand. Both speak fluent English, Spanish and of course German, this is a great asset to their business, allowing them a wide network of customers from all nationalities. They both live with their families and each have two children in the village of Competa. They are respected in the village for the work they do and the service they provide.

Florian and Jan arrived in Spain as children and so went into construction as soon as they left school, sometimes working together, sometimes working apart. They gained an enormous amount of experience working within different fields of construction and for different companies for example, Antonio Herrerdia, Tejauto, Paco Garcia, and Antonio Navas. Nine years ago they decided to set up on their own. Both Jan and Florian had built up a good rapport with many foreigners and with the booming construction industry the company went very quickly from strength to strength. They admit things now are a bit different with the recession; however their business is still strong. They base this on their excellent customer service and the guarantees they provide with their work. Jan stated they are a stable and credible business based in Competa with children and a mortgage, often important to know when handing over large sums of money for building work! They are happy to work long hours but also make sure they have time to relax with their family and a beer or two!

Florian and Jan are originally from Stuttgart in Germany, 21 years ago they moved to Spain with their parents. Their parents owned a scrap yard in the middle of Berlin and sold it when the Berlin wall opened and retired to Spain. They had friends in Gaucin, a village behind Estepona , so they asked if there was somewhere they could rent too. The Estate Agent office in Gaucin had a house in Competa to rent so Jan and Florians parents went to see it, loved it and Competa then became their home. Both Jan and Florian were only young when they arrived in Spain and so have picked up the language with ease over the years ease over the years. NBA FINALS

There lived a woman who had a maddening passion for baked beans. Unfortunately, they made her pass so much gas each time.

It's Game 7 of the NBA Finals, and a man makes his way to his seat right at center court. He sits down and notices that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbor if someone will be sitting there. "No" says the neighbor. "The seat is empty." "What? Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the NBA Finals and not use it?" The neighbor says, "Well, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first NBA Finals we haven't been to together since we got married." "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor, to take the seat?" The man shakes his head. "No,” he says. “They're all at the funeral.”

So when she met the man she would marry, she made the supreme sacrifice and gave up beans. Some months after her wedding, her car broke down on the way home from work. She called her husband and told him she would be late because she had to walk home. On her way, she stopped at a diner, and before she knew it, she had consumed three large orders of baked beans. All the way home she farted, and upon arriving home she felt sure she could control it. Her husband seemed excited to see her and said, "Darling, I have a surprise for dinner tonight." He then blindfolded her and led her to her chair at the table. She seated herself and as he was about to remove the blindfold from his wife, the telephone rang. He made her promise not to touch the blindfold until he returned, then went to answer the telephone. While her husband was out of the room she seized the opportunity, shifting her weight to one leg and letting it rip. It was loud, and smelled like a fertilizer truck running over a skunk. She shifted to the other cheek and ripped three more, which reminded her of cooked cabbage. She went on like this for another 10 minutes!

LADDER TO SUCCESS One day, Ron came upon a big, long ladder that stretched into the clouds. He'd walked this way every day and this ladder was never there before. Curious and brave, he began to climb. Eventually, he climbed into the layer of clouds, and saw this rather large, homely woman lying there on a cloud. She spoke: “Take me now or climb the ladder to success!” Ron figured success had to be better than this, so he continued climbing. He came upon another level of clouds, and found a thinner, cuter woman than before. She also spoke: “Take me now or climb the ladder to success!” Ron saw that his luck was changing and so continued his climb. On another level of clouds, he found a rather attractive woman with not so bad of a figure. She stated, “Take me now or climb the ladder to success!” Ron really liked his advantage now!

When her husband's call ended, she fanned the air a few more times with her napkin. He removed the blindfold, and she saw 12 dinner guests seated around the table to wish her a "Happy Birthday!"

He climbed quickly and deftly, and sure enough, on the next level, he found a gorgeous, lithe, well-endowed woman lying seductively on the cloud. “Take me now or climb the ladder to success,” she huskily whispered. Ron couldn't believe his eyes, but his greed caught the best of him. He climbed to the next level, expecting someone nothing short of a goddess. Suddenly, the ladder ends, and a latch closes behind him. He looks over to see a 400 pound, 6'8” hairy biker dude with tattoos. The biker gets up and walks menacingly towards Ron. Apprehensively, Ron whispers, “Who are you?” The biker answers, “I'm Cess.”

THE STORY OF MAX The heavy twisted chain snaked across the scorched and dusty ground ending around the neck of a large black dog called Max. He looked and was dejected and abandoned. He had started out life with a family who had to return to the UK and were unable to take him, they had arranged for him to go to another brit who said he could take him. The time came when Max’s new owner also had to go back to the UK. He made no arrangements for Max. He just left him chained up Luckily kind people fed Max and the owner of the land said he could stay there for a limited period

before he removed him. There was a frantic scramble with people trying to find someone who could give Max a home. Although Max is a nice friendly chap he is a big dog and large dogs are much harder to find homes for than small ones. The time was getting near to when the land owner had said he would remove Max. Finally, feeling full of guilt, I contacted Diedre.. Many of you will know about ‘Dee’ as being an excellent dog clipper and also dog rescuer. I felt/feel guilty because I was asking Diedre to take in yet another dog that no one else would take. She took him in and he is now ok with his new ‘off a chain’ life. Diedre and Bob are a couple of people who are devoting their lives to rescuing unwanted dogs. While many of us do a bit, they mop up the rest. They finance the feeding and vet care expenses almost entirely themselves. Currently they are desperately trying to create more weatherproof shelter. While most of us can’t devote our lives to the extent Bob and Dee are prepared to, we can help financially. If each of us donate a bit we can make it possible for Bob and Dee to give so much.We are in the process of creating a folder with photos of the dogs in need of homes. This will be placed in the Naturvets clinic (just down from the main Competa car park). A collection tin will also be there. Please please if you can’t adopt a dog, give what you can. Sue Backwell

CAS The number of requests for help received by CAS increased dramatically during September. In one week alone, there were 17 urgent requests to find foster homes. The help and support CAS receives from the other societies in Spain and from our Dutch and German colleagues has been outstanding. CAS's income has taken a big dip with the economic recession, yet the numbers of stray and abandoned animals continues to increase. The two main fundraisers and the treasurer are all retiring from their positions at the end of 2011 after many years of voluntary service, and CAS needs to bring in new blood to meet the challenge of increasing numbers of calls for assisting animals in need locally.
