Editors Note... In October the parents-in-law came and stayed for the weekend. I realised I hadn’t seen them since January which was the last time I was back in the UK. We had a lovely weekend. Sometimes it is hard for us to take time off from the magazine but this weekend we made a special effort and we went out for the day in Malaga. Despite light rain and black clouds we walked around the new port area of Malaga, sat and had a couple of beers looking out to sea and then wandered along Calle Larios where we were entertained with street dancers. I would definitely recomend a visit.

On the Sunday we took them out for Sunday lunch which was fab, so a lovely weekend was had by all. The kids loved their grandparents being around and we were sad to see them go. We will be experiencing Christmas here again in Spain for the second time in 9 years so we are fitting in a quick visit back to the UK at the end of November. We are planning a family Christmas day in the UK, then back to Spain for the real thing and then into Kings day in January so the kids really will have it all this year! Inside the magazine this month there is many a reference to Christmas and already we are giving you ideas as to what to do and book over the festive season. Also, don’t forget to look for the wine glass as a Indian meal for two is the prize this month.

wo British men have been arrested in Alhaurín de la Torre for transporting more than 640 pills of false and unauthorised Viagra. The man has not been named but the man in control was 47 and had the initials M.M.I. He was travelling with a 46 year companion, also British. The incident was on September 25 in the Avenida Portales de Peñon, when two police were on routine traffic control and decided to stop a vehicle given the suspicious behaviour of the two occupants. After asking for their documents, they were searched, and the police inspected the vehicle where they found a bag on the back seat and another on the floor containing the fake drugs. Some of drugs were in packets called, ‘Private Male Herbal Sex Pill’, and ‘Straight Up Herbal Viagra for Men’.Once the elder man was in the police station and questioned, he said that substances were his, and that he had the intention to sell them. The local police, when they proved that the man had been held on previous police incidents, they passed him on to the Guardia Civil

he 35 year old gardener who started the fire which swept along the Costa del Sol has been arrested. The fire in Málaga destroyed 8,225 hectares,
7,155 of them forestry, and the man was arrested after an investigation which confirmed that a bonfire of vegetable remains had been carried out on a finca in Coín. Those taking part in the investigation were the Civil Guard’s Service to Protect the Environment, SEPRONA, the BIIF Brigade for the investigation of forest fines, and the Andalucía fire fighting organisation, Infoca.

he Málaga Hospital, Carlos Haya, has denounced ‘sabotage’ for the dumping of toxic products. The hospital has discovered a possible spill of a toxic irritating element on the nephrology floor. The denuncia has coincided with a strike by workers in the cleaning company, Eurolimp, which is contracted to do the cleaning. They are protesting because of a cut in their wages and imposed longer working hours. They say the stoppage is indefinite. The hospital says that the alleged sabotage has meant having to move six patients to another floor as a precaution. The regional hospital has issued a statement saying they ‘energetically condemn the sabotage of the health centre which offers a public service which cannot be affected by this type of incidents’.

he MSC luxury cruise liner company will come to Málaga Port 19 times next year, a number lower than the 24 arrivals seen this year, but next year will see bigger boats with more passengers. The company has new liner, MSC Magnifica, which had its first port of call in Málaga. It will be making eight visits to Málaga from November to March, and then the MSC Divina, one of the largest and most modern in the MSC fleet will visit 11 times from March. Local tourism officials are pleased how the Málaga port extension is bringing in more tourists into the city, although many of them take a coach to Granada to see the Alhambra.

$1bn (£621m) project to build a replica of the Taj Mahal has been unveiled in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The Taj Arabia complex would be much bigger than the original monument and to include a 300-room hotel, shops and commercial buildings, developer Arun Mehra said it will be ready by 2014 and be known as the "New City of Love". The complex will also house other structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The Taj Mahal, which is situated in the northern Indian town of Agra, is a Unesco World Heritage site. It was completed more than 350 years ago by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a shrine for his wife Mumtaz and took more than 20 years to build. The white marble mausoleum, situated on the banks of the river Yamuna, is sometimes known as a teardrop on the cheek of time. The developers say they hope that the Taj Arabia will become a new wedding destination and attract couples to it.

talians bought more bicycles than cars in 2011 for the first time in decades, according to local media reports. Last year some 1.75 million bicycles were sold, about 2,000 more than the number of new cars registered, La Repubblica newspaper reported. It attributed the change to a slump in car sales during the economic crisis and the rising price of petrol, as well as bikes coming back into fashion. Car sales have slumped to the level at which they stood in 1964, it said. Though bicycling has a strong tradition in Italy, the
uns used by US gangsters Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, who died in a hail of police bullets in 1934, have sold at auction for $504,000 (£300,000). The guns were part of the RR Auction, entitled American Gangsters, Outlaws and Lawmen, taking place in the US state of New Hampshire on Sunday. Bonnie and Clyde's exploits during the Great Depression earned them a place in American folklore. Al Capone and Baby Face Nelson items are among others up for sale. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow gained notoriety for a string of bank robberies before law enforcement officers ambushed them in Louisiana on 23 May 1934. Items taken from the car in which the couple died, Bonnie Parker's cosmetics case and a host of photographs, were among items up for sale. Parker's Colt Detective Special .38 revolver drew the highest bid, selling for $264,000. Meanwhile Clyde Barrow's 1911 Army Colt .45 pistol went for $240,000. His pocket watch sold for $36,000.

The plant operator said it regretted the situation and had put in place a procedure to stop it happening again.

OUT AND ABOUT IN NOVEMBER All Saints Day and more
A
ll saints day is a national festival is a time for remembering the dead, and is apt for the time of year. As autumn is when nature dies little by little and prepares for winter. All Saints Day on the 1st of November is traditionally a day where flowers are laid on the graves of dead relatives. There are many traditions connected with this time of year including gastronomic ones which brings us to the festival of the La Castañeda. In times gone by "la castañada" was celebrated after the family evening meal, the dinner would include roasting chestnuts and other goodies in an open hearth which were part of the ancient funeral meals.
12 The Grapevine
Nowadays the first Castañeros (roasted chestnut sellers ) can be found on many street corners as the weather shows the first signs of the cold winter ahead. Also during the month of November, the village of Baena (Córdoba province) celebrates sessions dedicated to the olive and locally produced olive oil, considered to be one of the world’s finest. Many activities including exhibitions, conferences, tasting sessions, workshops and competitions, as well as music and folklore, complete this renowned event. Every 11 November, the village of Aller (in Moreda, Asturias) celebrates one of the most popular autumn folklore festivals in Asturias. The festival is organised by the San Martín
Humanitarian Association, and begins with the traditional sung mass of San Martín, accompanied by the sound of the typical Asturian bagpipes. Then, the auction known as the puya del ramu begins, where people are invited to bid for emmer bread (so-called because of the flour used to make it) which has been previously blessed in the religious ceremony. Later, there is a parade of floats accompanied by bands of bagpipers, dance groups and the xandas (groups of people who follow the procession behind the floats, usually wearing traditional local dress). The high point of the festivity is the feast of San Martín, which consists of fabada (typical Asturian white bean stew) casadiellas and panchón (typical sweets from Aller).

FOCUS ON...... BARCELONA A lively and vibrant city
B
arcelona is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world. It has a huge number of attractions including a city centre which retains its medieval street plan; one of the world's most famous streets, some stunning modernist architecture including several buildings by Gaudi (the Sagrada Familia, the Casa Milà...), Spain's most famous architect; dozens of museums including one dedicated to Picasso, another to Miró and yet another to Barcelona's world famous football club, Barça! Barcelona is almost as lively at night as it is during the day and it has a unique, exciting atmosphere, which provides the visitor with a truly unforgettable experience. There are two major arts festivals during the year, one in the summer (the Grec) and one in the autumn (La Mercé), and there are concerts and shows of different kinds happening all the time. The city enjoys an almost perfect climate making it an ideal place to be at any time of the year. It even has its own 4 kilometers of sandy beaches, which are less than 15 minutes away from the school. La Rambla is the most famous street in Barcelona. The wide boulevard connects the Plaça de Catalunya, a busy square, with the Columbus Monument and the city's waterfront. The Rambla The often crowded street is popular with tourists and locals a

like. The middle part of the Rambla is pedestrianised and bordered by trees. Kiosks, flower stalls and street artists are in abundance here. Traffic passes on either side of the pedestrian area. The Rambla was originally a small stream flowing just outside the city walls. In the 16th century convents and a university were built along the river. In the 19th century the city wall was torn down and buildings were erected along the now dried up river. The original buildings were demolished but they are remembered in some of the names of the five different parts of the Rambla. Even though it is one continuous street, the Rambla actually consists of five 'ramblas'. That's why the street is also called Las Ramblas (Spanish) or Les Rambles (Catalan). Rambla de Canaletes Plaça de Catalunya The first Rambla, starting from the Plaça de Catalunya, is the Rambla de Canaletes. The name originates from the 19th century Canaleta fountain. The expression 'he drinks water from Canaletes' means that a person comes from Barcelona. And according to local legend, once you drink from the fountain, you will keep coming back to Barcelona. Rambla dels Estudis The second Rambla is the Rambla dels Estudis. It is named after the 16th century university, the Estudis Generals. The building contains the first public clock of the city. Rambla de Sant Josep Plaça de la Boqueria
The next Rambla is the Rambla de Sant Josep, named after a convent which was demolished in the mid 1900s and replaced by the Mercat de la Boqueria, a colorful market place. Since this part of the Rambla has many flower stalls, it is now better known as the Rambla de les Flors, or 'Flower Rambla'. At the end of this part of the Rambla is a small square, the Plaça de la Boqueria. The pavement here features a mosaic by Joan Miró and a nearby shop is decorated with an Art Deco dragon. Rambla dels Caputxins Plaça Reial The fourth Rambla counting towards the Columbus Monument is the Rambla dels Caputxins, yet again named after a now demolished building: a Capuchin monastery. Rambla de Santa Mònica Centre d'Art Santa Mònica The last Rambla is the Rambla de Santa Monica, named after a convent, now converted into a museum, the Centre d'Art Santa Mònica. The rambla leads to a roundabout with a 60m tall column, the Columbus Monument. It was built in 1888 for the Universal Exposition. Rambla de Mar Rambla de Mar If you continue to walk in the direction of the Port Vell a wooden walkway, now known as the Rambla de Mar or Rambla of the Sea, leads you to Maremàgnum, a complex with shops, movie theaters - including an IMAX theater - and a large aquarium. The Rambla de Mar was designed by Viaplana & Piñon, who created a wooden suspension bridge with a wavy pattern, symbolizing the connection of the city with the Mediterranean. For decades, Barcelona had turned its back towards the sea and the extension of the Rambla, completed in 1994, symbolizes Barcelona's renewed opening towards the sea.

W
hen we think of curry we do not automatically think of South Africa. The fact this curry originates from Durban reflects the fact that there are an estimated 1.3 million people of Indian origin living in South Africa, most of who live in and around Durban, which was dubbed 'the largest 'Indian' city outside of India' by The Times of India. This curry is tasty and relatively easy and having made it lots of times I tend to experiment and add different ingredients such as fenugreek to see how it affects the taste. Serves about 4 depending how greedy you are.

Stir in the garlic, ginger, spices and curry paste and cook for a couple of minutes over a low heat constantly stirring. If the ingredients stick to the pan they will come off once you add the stock. Increase the temperature and add the chicken and chillies, stirring well for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes, half the stock and cook for about 10 minutes before adding the tomato puree. Add the potatoes and the remaining stock; cover and simmer for a further 20 to 30 minutes. Adjust the seasoning if necessary and sprinkle with the coriander before serving. THE TOWN FRIER The Grapevine talks to Trevor and Eve of The Town Frier, Fish and Chip shop, in Puente Don Manuel.
T
revor and Eve aren't new to the hospitality industry having worked in a bar in Algarrobo when they first came out to Spain. However, when they opened up The Town Frier in Puente Don Manuel in June of this year it certainly proved a challenge, a learning curve and long hours. However, they rose to the challenge and are now renowned for their excellent fish and chips and people travel from far to experience their true English fish and chips. Trevor and Eve moved from Southampton to Puente Don Manuel seven years ago. In England they ran a travel company together; they had two coaches and a travel shop. Trevor explained they have always worked together and that he and Eve make a great team. I asked if they ever argued and he said never as they create their own roles within the business and work these well alongside each other. They chose Punte Don Manuel as Trevor's father had a friend in the Trapiche area and they often
22 The Grapevine
came out to visit him. Eventually they had enough of England and wanted to create a better family life for themselves in Spain. So Trevor, Eve and their two boys moved out to Spain. Initially, Trevor stared working as a Disco DJ and in fact still does this now alongside the Town Frier. They then took on a bar called the Nags head in Algarrobo costa. However the travelling each day down to the coast took its toll so they decided to work closer to home. Eve found work at Arkwrights in Puente don Manuel and Trevor continued to work as a DJ. In June of this year they decided to take over the Town Frier, Fish and Chip shop just down the road from Arkwrights and next door to the English Shop at the Periana crossroads in Puente don Manuel. Initially working out how much fish they need to buy was difficult especially on Fridays! The Friday before I spoke to them they had sold out of absolutely everything, they had que's all day and from
12.00 until 10.000 they only took one half hour break. I asked Trevor if there were any plans for the future. He said they had just introduced different sizes of fish that could be ordered. He explained their only complaint to Date was the portions were too big! So now you can order a large or small portion of each type of fish. Also, due to demand they are will be introducing a new range of traditional English deserts such as spotted dick, Cheesecake and other old favourites. Finally before the winter sets in they are going to create a covered terrace with patio heaters for those that want to eat in or have a drink while they wait for a take away. Trevor and Eve work hard at the fish and chip shop and are have created a viable business in only a few months,. This has been down to hard work and trying different things and listening to their customers. If you haven't tried their fish and chips yet it is worth a special trip to Puente.

becoming difficult, as the citizens are revolting; The Sultan has the obligatory Harem, watch out for his two favourite Harem girls, total slappers. As usual, the humour will be ribald with a touch of blue. Sets have been brilliantly conceived by John Plush, so look out for his trademark subliminal symbols in the scenery. All funds raised will be going to local charities, including CARITAS, which will ensure some Christmas cheer for some of the poorest people in our community. The Big Garage, Brogan Properties, El Pilon and Nerja Solutions have sponsored the show and many businesses and local people have been generous in providing raffle prizes and taking adverts in our programme, thanks to them all for their generosity. CAMPO have a further plea for your generosity, on the nights of the Panto we will have a tub near the front door and would ask you to throw in a few coins (notes if you like). We have to buy new scenery screens and we really do not want to reduce the money the charities get so we ask for your help in buying these.

MAKING THE MOST OF MARKETING YOUR PROPERTY A Place in the Sun – Home or Away Channel 4 - May the Best House Win ITV1
A
t Sunset Properties Spain www.sunsetpropertiesspain.com we believe in taking the initiative and finding new ways of promoting your property. We already advertise on the Internet via various property portals and use local publications including The Grapevine Magazine and the Property Gazette. Our newest marketing outlet is in a prime coastal location in Torre del Mar where we now use the offices of Asesoria Axarquia. Advertising our properties in the window of this prestigious shop front gives us a presence on the coast which should lead to more coastal properties on our books and also attract clients looking on the coast to consider inland properties too. Recently we were given a fantastic opportunity to promote a couple of our properties on two national television shows ‘A Place in the Sun – Home or Away’ and ‘May the Best House Win’ – an advertising coup not to be missed! Here’s how we got on:-
36 The Grapevine
Jasmine Harman and the team from Channel 4’s highly successful show A Place in the Sun – Home or Away were filming in and around Cómpeta on Friday 28 September 2012. In the show, Jasmine and her colleague Jonnie Irwin, help couples find their ideal home either in the UK or abroad. In this particular episode the buyers will decide between Cornwall and southern Spain. This new series of A Place in the Sun – Home or Away is on Channel 4 at 11.00 am every day and Cómpeta will be featured at a future date. One of the properties they viewed is a fabulous villa that we have for sale in Cómpeta – a well established 3 bed 2 bath villa with a separate self-contained 2 bed 1 bath guest house located within walking distance of Cómpeta on the edge of the National Park with excellent access, beautiful pool area, double garage, mature gardens and stunning sea views. Check it out on our website using this reference number vc1_760.
Check it out on our website using this reference number vc1_760. Unfortunately the day they chose to film was when we had torrential rain and grey skies but owners Ted and Liz Pflanz were thrilled to take part. Liz said ‘we have been watching A Place in the Sun for years, even before we moved here ten years ago, so we were flattered that they chose our house and were quite excited at the thought of them filming here. It was a shame that after five months without any rain it poured all day and we even had a two hour power cut which meant they ended up spending seven hours here at house in addition to the filming in the village!’ Ted commented ‘first we had a call from Denise of Sunset Properties asking if she could put our property forward for filming, then we made it to a shortlist of 12 properties which the producer wished to view before choosing three to film. Excitement mounted. Extra cleaning and

gardening! The day dawned bright and the inspection seemed to go well. Then, THE call – our house is to be filmed in three days time - a new media career beckons! Then we looked at the weather forecast. After five months without rain, storms are forecast for the day of filming – surely it can’t be true? But it is and the rain is the heaviest for 30 years with thunder, lightening, floods and power cuts!
with incredible sea views, beautiful living accommodation, lots of outside space, secluded pool area and a separate building which could be converted into a self contained guest house. Have a look at it on our website - it is reference number vc1_572. Owner Rob McDonagh was up against a circular home in the hills of Málaga, a villa with spectacular views and a rural retreat and Rob’s villa won him the €1,000 prize.
Apart from the weather, one thing that stands out from the day is the film crew. It must have been a frustrating day for them but they continually apologised for taking our time and moving us out of our house as they filmed. They were really friendly but also very professional. We were not allowed to see the actual filming so the first time we’ll see what was said about our house will be when it is shown on TV’. Denise was on hand to support Ted and Liz and answer any questions. She thoroughly enjoyed being part of the filming process and having spent three days with the production team Denise said ‘Jasmine, the presenter of the show, was lovely, really down to earth and as pretty in real life as she looks on TV! It was such a shame about the weather but Ted and Liz and the entire TV crew coped really well with whatever was thrown at them! Hopefully when the villa is shown on the programme the production team will have worked their magic and it will look as good as it does in the sunshine!’
Rob said after the show ‘it was a fabulous experience taking part in the programme. Linda and I enjoyed it very much and were made to feel very much at ease by the whole of the television crew. It was very intense indeed – no sitting around relaxing. In fact, from start to finish I took part in over 50 hours of filming for a one hour programme!
Rob McDonagh wins the €1,000 prize.
At Sunset Properties we offer a friendly, reliable and professional service, take a proactive approach towards the marketing of all of our properties for sale and guide our clients through the buying and selling processes from beginning to end.
May the Best House Win ITV1 In each episode of this popular series four homeowners open their doors to each other in the hope of winning a cash prize. The icing on the cake was obviously winning the show – a definite bonus! Would I do it all again? Yes, definitely it was a wonderful experience and best of all I met three really nice people in the other contestants and yes we are all still speaking to each other and have met up since the programme on more than one occasion! Recommendation – if you get the chance, do it!’
We cover the whole of the Axarquia region so if you want to buy or sell in our area, contact Denise for further information or for an appointment either by ‘phone 618 295 063 or email info@sunsetproperties-spain.com or call into our office Asesoria Axarquia at Torre del Mar and speak to Marcos – just head towards Málaga from the police station and Asesoria Axarquia is next to the MAPFRE office. 10 Brain Facts and Figures
the day – that's why scientists think we dream (no one is really sure why). Some believe it's a way to process the complex emotions and interactions of our daily lives, others think it's just a way to zero-out information, much like a computer. A recent study showed it may help us alleviate trauma. People with higher IQs tend to dream more, and a nap during the day has proven to make people more energized and focussed on their work.
Mens brains are 10% bigger but does this mean better?
1.The Brain Feels No Pain. There are no pain receptors in the brain. That's why surgeons can perform brain surgery on a patient why they are still awake. This helps them ensure that the delicate procedure doesn't screw up any vision or motor control function. Why do we feel pain? Because a nociceptor, a sensory receptor, sends signals to the spinal cord and brain alerting us to danger. 2. 100,000 Miles of Blood Vessels in the Brain. There are also a hundred billion neurons that comprise the brain Using about 17% of your body's energy and 20% of its oxygen, while only containing 2% of its mass, the brain produces between 10-23 watts of power when awake, enough to light a bulb. Made of 75% water, and enough “space” to hold the entire Enclyclopedia Britannica fivefold, or 1,000 terrabytes of information . 3. They Saved Einstein's Brain. When Albert Einstein died in 1955, they didn't just save a lock of hair. Dr. Thomas Harvey performed the brainectomy a mere seven-and-a-half hours after Einstein's death, purportedly for scientific research. Then it vanished. It wasn't until 1978 that an intrepid journalist named Steven Levy tracked down Dr. Harvey in Wichita, Kansas, where the good doctor admitted he still had the brain, sliced in 240 pieces and bobbing in two mason jars

filled with formaldehyde. 4. There Are Differences Between the Right and Left Brain. The brain is split up into two symmetrical hemispheres. While they do work together, the left brain favours more rational, analytical thinking, while the right is more visually and conceptually oriented. They also work in opposites – you stub your left toe and the “pain” is processed on the right side. And they put right-sideup whatever is upside-down – the image in your eyes is actually received inverted and the brain corrects it. Even if you were to lose one-half of your brain, you would be able to survive without it. 5. Sorry Ladies, Men's Brains are 10% Bigger. Concrete proof that men are smarter than women! Although women's brains are smaller, they have more nerve cells and connectors and work more efficiently than men's. And, true to the stereotype, they tend to process on the more “emotional” left side of the brain, while men process on the “logical” right. Also, an area known as the straight gyrus, responsible for nurturing, feminine traits, is proportionately larger in women. 6. Your Brain is More Active When You Sleep. Night-time is the right time for your brain to process all the activity that has occurred during to
7. "Inception" is Real. It turns out, there is something called Lucid Dreaming, where a person could control the outcome of a dream while in a sleep-like state. It has its roots in ancient Tibetian Buddhism, where aspirants would practice “Dream Yoga” – doing incredible feats of dexterity during sleep, reminding themselves of the illusory nature of existence. The term was first coined by Frederik (Willem) van Eeden in the 1880s, but the concept didn't take hold until the late 1960s. 8. Why Do We Laugh? True laughter is involuntary. Only human beings are born with this ability. And while true laughter is contagious, it is also something not easily faked. Over a 10-year period, one doctor studied 2,000 laugh-inducing situations and discovered that most of the time a guffaw was not the result of a punch line. 9. Does Size Matter? Research has been mixed on the subject of brain size and intelligence – Albert Einstein's brain was only 1,230 grams, while the average adult male brain weighs 1,400. 10. Highest IQ? Kim Ung-yong with 210. Born March 8, 1972, Ung-young already understood algebra at 8 months old. By the time he was 2, he was fluent in 4 languages. He began attending university at 4, and graduated at 15.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH New Water Retentive Products.
A
t the Garden Centre, we are constantly searching out new and different plants for you but, also, exciting new products and, especially, organic ones. We think we’ve found a gem!
desertification is with us. But we have three new products that are going to cut down on watering time and costs and give you improved crops too. Let me explain.
For Andalucian gardeners, water is always the biggest problem – the hours we have to spend watering and the cost of it. Sadly it isn’t going to get better –
These organic and ecological products enhance the performance of plants but consume fewer natural resources. Water consumption is reduced by, at least, 50%; the use of fertiliser
46 The Grapevine
is reduced by 50%; there is a 15% - 25% improvement in yields – fruit, veg or flowers - and the mortality rate of plants and trees is reduced. All this with minimal irrigation. You might think it sounds too good to be true but field tests in Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait and currently in Morocco and Spain are bringing in confirmation of these claims on all fronts.

There are three products: 1. Bio Humus: A substrate composed of 90% organic material and 10% natural silicates with a very high natural mineral content. It enhances the long-term growth of the roots and allows the plant to absorb 90% of the water given by irrigation/rain, reducing losses by evaporation and rapid absorption into hot, dry ground. At the same time it channels better absorption of nutrients. It is extremely beneficial in dry soils, nutrient poor soils, and in desert-like climates. It even enables growth in saline conditions. Bio Humus is applied once only for new plantings. Dry it resembles dark compost and becomes gel-like when wet. It is sediment extracted from glacial lakes, formed over thousands of years by the decomposition of algae, plankton and reeds with extraordinary water retentive properties. These same lakes are silting up because of an abundance of the material, so removing it is, in fact, beneficial to the environment and gives us gardeners a remarkable material too. Where dredging has taken place, native fish are returned to the new increased depth of water to restore the natural balance. It is available in 25 litre sacks which will retail at €25 but that is sufficient for planting 12 trees; thus approx. €2 a tree – a one-off application that will carry on functioning in the soil for up to 10 years. The saving in water is generally 50%. Work it out! This important product is currently in use on mango trees in the south of Spain. 2. Humate Extract: a 100% organic liquid concentrate derived from Bio Humus. It stimulates the development of beneficial fungi and root growth to such an extent that the plants become much more self-sufficient. It can be applied to new/existing plantings either by foliar spray or

through radicular irrigation. It complements Bio-Humus. It is available in 2 litre pots, priced at €70 but – wait for this – the dilution rate is 1:1000 applied by foliar spray or 1:10,000 in the water system. It will achieve results at least as good as those of chemical fertilisers but at much less cost and no contamination of crops or soil. It need only be applied once a month. 3. Mycor Glomus: 100% organic material based on six strains of fungi. These fungi live on the roots of plants forming a symbiotic relationship, one that is mutually beneficial; if the plant thrives, the fungi thrive so they look after each other. They have been shown to increase root growth up to seven times, thus reducing the watering and feeding requirements significantly. Ground tests in Kuwait have been so successful that a production plant is being opened up in the Arab Emirates to meet demand. The huge increase in root growth makes this product eminently suitable for anti-erosion plantings and ground stabilising. It comes in a powder form to be sprinkled onto the roots before planting or it can be injected, in paste form, into the roots of existing plantings. It is available in 2 litre pots, priced at €70 but this will last for ages. So why haven’t you heard of these new products? Simply because we are the first local Garden Centre to carry them and proud to be so. Saving you money and saving our earth. Call and see us for more information. saved from the Perrera. Steven Primrose-Smith and myself went up to to Dee's house to take photos of as many of the dogs as we could. It seemed futile given that such little time remained, but we felt if we could save even one dog it would be worth the effort. We shared the photos of the dogs and their details on Facebook. Nobody was prepared for what would happen next.
THE STORY OF DEE'S DOGS by Nina Cordoray Downes (Action for Animals)
I
'd like to tell you a story. A story that's both sad and happy. A story to illustrate how much can be achieved when people work together and help each other. This is the story of Dee's dogs... Dee lived with her husband Bob, in a house in the campo, with over 70 dogs and very few resources to keep so many. Over the years she had taken in abandoned and unwanted dogs from people all around the area. Uncaring people would often dump dogs at the end of the track to their house, in the knowledge that Dee and Bob would take those unwanted dogs into their home. A short time ago, Bob was sadly killed in an accident, leaving Dee alone to care for the dogs. Just a few weeks later, Dee was informed by the local authorities that she must get rid of all the dogs or they would be destroyed. The Perrera had been ordered to come to her property and put all the dogs to sleep. She had only a

few days to find homes for 70 dogs. It's difficult to rehome just one dog at the best of times, but rehoming such an enormous number seemed impossible. One early solution that was proposed to us at Action for Animals was that we might fund humane euthanasia on site at Dee's house, in preference to the dogs being dragged off by the Perrera and having to suffer the distress of a long journey in the back of a van, to their ultimate death at the pound. The euthanasia of dozens of healthy dogs was not a proposal that we, or our vets at Naturvets and Clinica Veterinaria, wanted to support or consider. So, along with many others who wanted to save Dee's dogs, our journey to find a solution began. Sue Backwell started the ball rolling by writing about Dee's plight on two local internet newsletters and 13 dogs were
Within minutes people started to share the Facebook post. It rapidly reached 100 shares and the offers of help started flooding in. Other charities shared the information too and it seemed that every animal lover in the land had responded to this desperate plea to save Dee's dogs. Kim Simmonds contacted Coastline radio and our phone began to ring. More people were offering to save the dogs. Jacqui Ross got in touch with every person in her massive address book and yet more people came forward. We were witnessing networking at its very best. The response was incredible. Animal shelters across the Costa del Sol were offering places of sanctuary for the dogs, and local people were prepared to give up their time to transport the dogs to wherever they needed to go. Hope was rising. We had 24 hours left. On the morning of Sunday 14th October, a group of 16 people gathered together at Competa Helipad with a plan. We were going to Dee's house to rescue as many of the remaining dogs as possible and take them to places of safety. On arrival at the house we were met by an enormous group of unruly barking dogs. It was difficult to know where to start, but Steven managed to organise the operation calmly and efficiently and we began to get dogs into cars. It wasn't easy. Most weren't accustomed to being on leads,

many were uncatchable, but Silve The Dog Whisperer set about capturing even the most difficult ones, gently cradling their terrified bodies in his arms as he carried them one by one uphill to the waiting cars. As each car was filled, the drivers set off to their pre-planned destinations: Alhaurin, Estepona , Mijas, Marbella, and even as far as the Gibraltar border. Not one of them expressed concern that their lovely shiny vehicles might soon be dripping in dog poo and vomit. Throughout the remaining hours of the day even more people arrived with empty cars and trailers and left with them full. A French lady, Julie, fell immediately in love with a tiny dog called Biscuit and scooped him up, smothering him with more kisses to his little snout than many dogs get in a lifetime. Two sweet, shy dogs that were sisters and had
spent their entire lives side by side were adopted by Jacqui and Wes and will now happily remain together for the rest of their lives. Max, an enormous dog who had been kept in a cage for so long because of his inability to get along with the other animals, was joyously freed by his new owners, Harm and Irene, and hobbled off on his wobbly, unused legs towards their car. He was going home. They were all going home. They were all saved. Every single one of them. Something truly amazing happened that day and it wouldn't have happened without all those wonderful people. I am proud to have been part of such a fantastic team. Huge thanks must go to everyone that pulled together to save Dee's dogs: the charities - ACE, ADANA, Martina from Monda, Parque del Duque,The Man Who Wishes to Remain Anonymous somewhere
near Gibraltar, and TripleA. Also, the individuals - Sue Backwell, Dorothy Coates, Lin Collier, Lynn Gallon, Mark Hastie, Lin Hazelden, Elaine Kidd, Steven Primrose-Smith, Jan Riley, Jacqui Ross, Silve The Dog Whisperer, Kim and Phil Simmonds, Andrea Wade, Kim Wilson, and all the caring people who stepped forward to adopt or foster dogs. The story of Dee's dogs isn't over. Many of the dogs were taken to shelters. Yes, they are safe, but still looking for the loving homes they deserve. Please make one of these dogs happy. If you can give one a permanent home, ring me on 660586040 or check our website www.actionforanimals.org for photos of the dogs and details of which shelters they are in.

campaign to be a financial success, they need to collect vast amounts of plastic bottle tops over a long period of time. Despite it not being a quick solution, it still offers hope for Yolanda and her son. They have already been able to go to the UK with the money raised on 20th of January in Frigiliana and Yolanda now continues fighting for Pablo with this new initiative. Any help will be gratefully received. It doesn’t matter where the bottle tops are collected, Yolanda and Pablo, or another family member, will be happy to come and pick them up.
SPECIAL CAMPAIGN Collection of Bottle Tops for Pablo
S
pecial Campaign: Collection of bottle tops in aid of Pablo. Pablo has Cerebral Palsy and requires many and lengthy trips to the UK for Treatment. So a campaign has started in aid of this little boy Pablo. It is very simple and anyone can help, all you need to do is collect bottle tops and this will help raise money for the series of treatments that Pablo has already undertaken in England and that have already shown signs of success. So, The Grapevine Magazine is asking all its readers and advertisiers to join in this collection and help with this cause.
In Frigiliana, everybody knows Pablo and his mother Yolanda. Everybody recognises them and sees the daily efforts Yolanda goes to, to give her son whatever treatment is necessary to improve his quality of life.
66 The Grapevine
The campaign has now gone live on social websites as well, http://www.facebook.com/#!/event s/278300455614738/ , in the hope that the information will reach further afield. The family ask that we all share the event with other Facebook friends so that every day more and more people gradually learn about the campaign.
The treatment that Pablo is receiving in the UK, known as the Scots Techniqut has considerably improved his quality of life. However, this is an on-going treatment which requires various visits to the centre for a whole year. Despite their having been a large amount of money raised in January in order to facilitate their first trip, the money doesn’t stretch that far and so more is needed to help the family pay for the up and coming visits.
The current collection points are as follows: - C.E.I.P Enrique Ginés (FRIGILIANA) - Iluminación Fuente Vieja (FRIGILIANA) - Guardería Frigiliana (FRIGILIANA) - Cafetería Almijara (c/ Real 1, FRIGILIANA) - Cafetería Fandangos (c/ Rosarico la joaquin, FRIGILIANA) - Ferreteria Avenida (Avd Andalucia 16 A,FRIGILIANA)
Yolanda Ruiz, Pablo’s courageous mother is not asking for money or for gifts for a raffle. She is merely asking for everybody’s collaboration in a task that is much more simple. A simple task that for her means so much: the collection of plastic bottle tops. This isn’t the first case in which plastic bottle tops have been collected in order to raise money to help pay for treatment abroad. However, in order for this

insufferably posh world, where people swirl wine, spit it and tell you it smells of nettles. Of course there are wine snobs. But it would be a shame to their pretentions and the myth that appreciating wine belongs exclusively to rich and privileged connoisseurs, or even your own inverse snobbery, put you off. Wine is a lovely, subtle drink: getting to know it lets you enjoy it all the more. So don´t be intimidated! Here´s some tasting tips to help you get overcome your doubts.
TASTING WINE Sighting, swirling, sniffing, sipping, sampling, slurping…
T
here is a world of wine. It is a sub-culture that almost everyone – since most of us drink wine now and again - knows something of. With the help of the long-running vogue for celebrity chefs on TV every gastronomic element, including wine, has become more familiar. So if we chose a bottle from a wine list we look at its region of origin, its age, whether oaked or not, whether fortified or not. That´s quite a change from selection based on price and colour. But there’s still a sense that the “Wine World” is other: an intimidating subculture of people who know bobal from pinot; and can accurately discuss not just the wine’s region, age and development, but also the climate, soil type and altitude that the grapes that made this particular bottle enjoyed after just one deep sniff. We have a vague impression that these people are part of an annoyingly complicated, intriguingly ritualistic and

Legs? Wine’s legs – the “tears” that flow down the wine glass when you swirl it – are no indication of quality, but can have implications for the wine´s body: fuller-bodied wines generally have slower legs. Tannins Tannic is the taste of a highly concentrated tea; this comes from tannin, the wine’s natural preservative, which adds complexity. Wines shed tannins as they age, becoming softer in texture and more complex in flavour. The Look Take a look at the wine in the glass. A white background helps: a table cloth or napkin will do. Tilt the glass away from you and look for the difference in colour from the middle to the rim. How would you describe it to a friend? Rich or pale? Clear or dense? Straw or buttercup yellow? Cherry or plum red? Give it a twirl? Swirling the wine round your glass isn´t just affectation: it release the smell. As well as simply bringing some wine higher in the glass (and therefore nearer the nose), a swirl aerates it, letting oxygen combine with ethers and aldehydes to yield the bouquet. The Nose Take a good first sniff at the wine.
Pause a moment then take a longer second sniff. The wine´s aroma varies with grape variety, fermentation and the ageing process. The human nose can detect thousands of distinct scents, contributing to our sense of taste. As with colour we tend to describe the smells with comparisons to something they remind us of, so in a fruity wine you might smell hints of melons or blackberries, in a spicy wine you might smell cinnamon or pepper. You may find yourself thinking of something inedible: people may describe a smell being sharp or deep, metallic or warm...or even, just possibly, nettles! It can be very individual. In the Mouth At last! Don´t rush! There are three stage of taste: the initial impression (is it sweet, sharp or tannic?), then the mid-palette where you get the full flavour in your mouth and then the finish when you swallow and have the final impression in the wine´s aftertaste (and whether you want another mouthful). There is “balance” when all the components (acidity, sweetness, tannin, fruitiness) work together. The taste in a wine can be “complex” – multi-layers of flavours, changing with aeration. Take a second sip and suck in a little air over the top to see how the wine “opens up” in your mouth. A great wine will be balanced, complex, and offer a long aftertaste. If this all sounds difficult don´t be deceived: it simply involves paying attention to your senses. Go to a wine tasting; you don’t need a dictionary, black-tie or a spittoon. At a Bodegas Bentomiz wine tasting you will learn also learn about how the wine is made and how this beautiful young winery has developed; you can also drive since (bad luck!) you won’t get drunk. Make your own wine world, united by an appreciation of the wonderful subtlety of some lovely wines!

"A Vodka Martini please mate," I said as I pushed my way in front of two massive women in the cocktail bar. "That's very rude!" one of them said. "Just for that you can buy ours! That'll be two margaritas." "And two cheese and tomato pizzas for these fatties please.”
My wife sent me a text today which said:
Missing Teeth I walked into Greggs and said to the cashier, "I've just bought a sandwich from you, I took one bite and 2 teeth fell out." "Maybe you bit down too hard?" she replied. "They're not my teeth.”
I went to see the Red Arrows today. There were gasps of "Ooh" and "Aah" as the crowds watched on in amazement. Near miss after near miss had some people covering their eyes and shaking their heads in disbelief. It was a good half hour's worth of entertainment, but in the end, my

wife finally managed to park the car and we made our way to the air show.
I was in the shop today, and there was a little boy crying because he wanted some chocolate buttons. "I haven't got enough money," his mother said to him. "I've got some spare change on me, I'll buy them," I said to her. "Are you sure about that?," she said. "Of course," I replied, "I haven't had chocolate buttons in ages, so it'll be a nice treat for me.”
"I bought somehing special today and I think you will like it. I wont say what it is but I'll give you some hints, it's going to be hot, juicy and wrapped in black rubber, you rarely get it and it will be on the kitchen table when you get home." When I'd finished work I raced home, ran into the kitchen and there was my wife on the kitchen table wearing a black, rubber, crotchless cat suit. All I could say was "Well where's my black pudding?”
Went to PC World earlier... Had to be careful of what I said...

It would not be the first time, however, for Nerja to be considered a High Tourism Affluence Town. For the latest four years in a row (2009 to 2012), the Andalucian Government approved it. Now the town is looking for a fifth
