NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update !
H
igher salaries, better education and more work opportunities. That’s what expatriates say about Singapore, which has been chosen for the fourth year in a row as the best place to live, according to the 11th HSBC Expat Explorer survey. The average salary in Singapore is over €140,000 and tends to be 30% more what an expat believes they could earn in their home country. Spain, in contrast, is ranked 14th overall on the list of 31 countries that were reviewed, dropping three spots since 2017. But it’s a mixed review. In the category on economic conditions, Spain is nearly last in 27th place, but the country jumps to second place when it comes to quality of life. The results are based on interviews with 22,000 professionals from 163 countries who have left their homes to work abroad. To get a better understanding of expat life, the survey looks at 27 variables in three categories: economy, experience and family life.
S
pain’s anti-austerity Podemos party has reignited the debate over legalizing marijuana. The group organized a congressional forum on cannabis regulation to propose legalizing the drug, following in the footsteps of Uruguay, nine states in the United States and ,most recently, Canada. “It’s absurd that you can buy tequila or gin from a supermarket but marijuana is illegal,” Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has said on

several occasions. Under Podemos’ plan, farmers would be able to plant the crop if they have problems with their regular harvest. In order to “stop big businesses from creating monopolies and oligopolies and promote a dynamic economy that leads to social wealth,” the proposal would also support private crops, farming cooperatives and small and medium-sized agricultural operations.
O
ne of Europe’s most wanted fugitives has been found hiding in a secret room built under the kitchen counter of his old family home. Esteban Vacas García, 49, went on the run 12 years ago after being convicted of repeatedly raping his 15 year-old stepdaughter in Spain. Frustrated by the failure to track him down, police published his photograph on Twitter and received a tip-off that he was in the northwestern community of Castile and Leon. “After numerous efforts, he was finally located in the city of Salamanca where he lived in the family home where he had been raised, leaving the building on rare occasions and always in the early hours of the morning,” the Policia Nacional said in a statement.
N
arn - In a remote corner of northwestern Spain, a small town has set itself
the ultimate weight loss challenge: by early 2020, its residents must shed 100 000kg. Gone are bacon and fried calamari from the diets of thousands of residents in Naron who are taking to sport again as part of a slimming programme that kicked off in January."In the 21st century, people forget they're made to walk," says Carlos Pineiro, the 63-year-old family doctor behind the programme, which has the support of the town council.Perched on the Atlantic coast of the Galicia region, the 40 000-strong town counts 9 000 overweight residents and another 3 000 who suffer from obesity, Pineiro says.Known for its gastronomy and often gargantuan dishes, Galicia is the region in Spain with the most overweight people, according to a study by the Spanish Society of Cardiology."The rainy weather means people stay at home a lot with a very big daily ingestion of calories," says Pineiro. More than 4 000 residents - or a tenth of the population - have joined the project. To show their support, the mayor, Marian Ferreiro, and her municipal councillors weighed themselves together in public on giant scales. The programme, drawn up by local doctors, offers personalised diets and physical activity adapted to those who adhere.
P
eople in Spain are predicted to have the longest life expectancy in the world by 2040 – beating Japan into second place – and much of the reason is to do with the way they eat, according to the authors of the most comprehensive study of the global burden of disease. In the years to come, the biggest threats to our health and longevity will be obesity, high blood pressure and blood sugar, tobacco use and drinking alcohol, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, US, which has produced the forecasts.“Spain does really well in those,” said Dr Christopher Murray, director of the IHME at the University of Washington, “although tobacco is an area where they could be better. But current life expectancy is very good.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS DiďŹƒculties Between Touristic Apartments And the Owners' Associations
O
ne of the main concerns in the owners' associations these last years is the increasing number of houses devoted by their proprietaries to touristic rental. This fact changes the daily cohabitation and affects to the rest of owners in the building since it is common to find that the expenses have increased due to the frequent and usually inappropriate use of the communal elements, services and facilities, and also due to the typical annoyances produced by the touristic activity.
these duties; it is common that they receive notifications informing that an administrative inquiry which proposes a high penalty has been initiated against them.
Although the law gives to the owners' associations the opportunity to ban the tourist use of any of the houses in the building, in practice it is something impossible to be undertaken. For example, all the buildings where the owners' association has already created its regulation need unanimous agreement to carry the prohibition out, which means that 100% of the neighbours must vote the The owners' associations are thinking about mechanisms which same. Even the President of the association can, on his own or a neighbour's initiative, demand the immediate cessation of inconveniences making the proprietary and the guest aware of the filing of legal actions against them. In conclusion, this is a matter of current concern, far from being resolved, and that will certainly remain being a topical issue in the coming years as well as a fundamental point in the tourist sector legislation. cyclemalaga.com No.1 for bike rental in the Axarquia. Don't just take our word for it! Wonderfull ride in Competa We were a group of 10 guys (for some it was first time on a real race-bike), who rented bikes via cyclemalaga (Hellen and Steve) and can give our highest recommendation. We met them in the square at Competa as agreed, and they where ready with all the bikes, which was top-quality!!! carbon bikes, great helmets and also drink-bottles that we bought for 5€ each, and could keep afterwards. Our rute was Competa - Canillas de albaida, Archez, Arenas, Velez Malaga and down to the coast to have lunch. Then to Torrox and from there up to Competa. Very nice trip!! We can only give the best recommendations to cyclemalaga.com and would recommend everyone to take a biketrip is the most beautifull surroundings. micben86 Frederiksberg, Denmark Cycling trip with Steven Bert and Thomas did a cycling trip of 65 km with Steven. The equipment was perfect, the guidance and service were also the best. One telephone call two days in advance and everything was organised as agreed on. Thank you, Steven !! Cycle Malaga = Excellent Highly recommended. Helen responds to emails quickly and the service from Steve is first class - delivery, set up, pedal options and very knowledgeable, about the excellent bikes and cycling terrain. A great experience. Stewart G London, United Kingdom “Great bike and great service” I hired a bike for 10 days whilst on holiday in Competa in August. Steve delivered an almost brand new Giant TCR Advanced road bike directly to my villa and gave me some great advice on local cycling routes. He even popped back again later to drop off a map of the area which came in very handy. The bike was great, nice and light for the climbs, 22 speed Ultegra groupset (that extra gear definitely came in handy) and a great fit for me (not always easy as I'm 6'6"). Whilst some of the climbs in the area are tough, the scenery when you get to the top is absolutely stunning and well worth the effort! A great service from Helen and Steve and I would recommend them to anyone cycling in the Competa/Nerja/Malaga area. I'll be back again myself next year! Terry R Huntingdon, United Kingdom

And their next special sees the incomparable Keith James back at the bodega to perform for guests at a 5course dinner on Thursday 20th December. Keith is a poet, composer and musician, with a huge reputation: the Independent described his performance as “Some of the most emotive and compelling music you will ever hear” Playing “The best of Keith James” means that Keith will showcase his repertoire: the songs of brilliant folk artists from Leonard Cohen to Joni Mitchell to Cat Stephens, along with some of his own work, based on his own poetry and that of writers such as Federico García Lorca, Dylan Thomas and William Blake.

he Bodegas Bentomiz winery, just off the Sayalonga-Cómpeta road, is a beautiful modern building built by André, who is now running the wine-centred restaurant serving gourmet lunches, but whose first love was architecture. It is in one of the most beautiful places in the Axarquía, with stunning views of the mountains and the sea – so perhaps it should be no surprise that A Place in the Sun, recently filming in the area, brought their househunters here to take a little footage.
working with Juan Quintanilla (from the Sollun restaurant in Nerja), it should not surprise that they are going from strength to strength. “We keep hearing guests comparing us to Michelinstarred restaurants!” said André. “Crazy stuff! We are after all, a winery first and foremost.” Still, the visitors have a point – whatever André and Clara set out to do, they seem to do exceptionally well. You only need to see the ecstatic reviews from people who have eaten at the bodega on TripAdvisor, Instagram and Facebook to know André's kitchen is no exception.
With Clara and André's Ariyanas wines winning awards right and left and served in over 20 Michelin starred restaurants, with gourmet food designed by André
They have also done well with special events, from private parties to dinners and music night. Their “Mountain Wine and Music” summer concerts have

TABERNA DE OSCAR Closes For The Winter Re-Opening Next Year

t was 14 years ago when I first interviewed Oscar in the very first edition of The Grapevine Magazine! Over the years he has become a friend as well as an advertiser and I have never been able to grab an interview due to the long and hard hours he works over the summer period. Then he takes part of the winter off to enjoy rest, travel and sometimes work in the UK to gain more experience, pick up new skills and learn about new dishes.
over to Spain with his wife and daughter named Etawyn to work in Oscar’s restaurant. Originally Mark is from Devon and worked at The Cot Inn 5 years previous to coming to Spain. The pub came 8th Best Pub in the Telegraph newspaper and 30th Best Eatery in the country.
Mark has enjoyed this year living and working in Spain and is keen to return to work next year with Oscar. They have worked very well together and the season has been a total success. The restaurant has been full of This winter is no exception as Taberna de Oscar will serve food customers throughout the summer often returning two or 3 times in for the last time this year on their holiday. LA CASA BELLA & TODO EXPRESS Competa´s Favourite Shops Rebrand.
W
hen Sugar & Spice opened in 2005 we chose a name that reflected what we sold and liked the sound of. The tag line "and all things nice" (often said or sung by customers as they walked through the door!) also allowed us to sell non-food items like furniture and gift ware. However when we launched our dedicated furniture and furnishings web site lacasabella.es we chose a name that not only worked in Spanish and English but alluded to selling items to make a beautiful home. Moving the food products to Todo Papel in 2017 was the logical thing to do for many reasons, more space, proximity of the car park & longer opening hours. Now a busy year later it feels like the right time to change the names of both shops to more accurately reflect what they sell. The furniture shop in Calle Cazadores, Cómpeta will now fall in line with the website and be named La Casa Bella. The website and shop can best be described as the same flavour. In the shop you will find a selection of fabulous furniture and furnishings from our web site as well as many smaller decorative items, bespoke one-off pieces and other special objects that we
46 The Grapevine
come across on our travels. In the shop we need to keep things changing so that regular customers can keep coming back and seeing different things. At this time of year we pride ourselves on our range of low-priced and interesting gifts for Christmas.
Already in the shop we have some of the Christmas favourite goodies. All the Festive tubs are available from as little as 7€ . Thanks to some creative buying, many of your Christmas favourites are on offer at even less than last year.
On the website we need continuity so that people can browse and come back and find the items are still there to buy. We work with many clients creating beautiful living areas that look designed rather than just furnished. We don’t have a particular style, it's all about the individual. We love beautiful things and when we find something new that we love, we add it to the website so the product ranges keep growing and the shop keeps changing. Debbie at Todo Papel in Avenida Constitución Cómpeta has also decided on a name change to Todo Express, better reflecting what is sold and the fast moving environment , this includes international foods including all your favourite British staples, baking ingredients herbs and spices from around the world, Indian, Oriental and Vegetarian ranges. As well as greeting cards, second hand books, holiday equipment hire, package receiving and post box rental.
2019 Diaries and Calendars are already available in the shop and throughout November there is a special offer when you buy two packs of Christmas cards you get the third at half price. As part of our rebranding exercise we will be offering further exciting special offers and events so make sure that you're following us on Facebook and signed up to our News Letter. For design ideas, decor, Facebook and Newsletter information. AVOCADOS
In short, it is healthy!
A
mong the many fruits and vegetables Spanish conquistadors brought from their forays in the Americas, avocado was the slowest to catch on. Tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkins, ands cocoa were some that became popular quickly. Spain today is the single largest European avocado producer, and exports to many countries. The Costa del Sol, along the Mediterranean Sea from Granada to Malaga is the largest producer, though the Canary Islands also produce avocados. Avocado Health Benefits 1. Anti-inflammatory properties. Avocados are rich in antiinflammatory properties, which help relieve arthritis pain. It is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help lubricate joints and further relieve joint pains. According to the book 'Healing

Foods' by DK Publishing, "The fats of this fruit are unique. They include phytosterols, plant hormones such as campesterol, beta-sitosterol, and stigmasterol, that help keep inflammation under control. It also contains polyhydroxylated fatty acids (PFAs), which are antiinflammatory". 2. Regulates Blood Pressure Avocados may do wonders in keeping your blood pressure levels in check too. Avocados are good source of potassium and are low in sodium, which helps keep your blood pressure stable. A stable blood pressure helps stave off the risk of heart attack or stroke. 3. Good for heart In addition to being a healthy bet for blood pressure patients, avocados are also a rich source of antioxidants and monounsaturated fats which help keep the heart
healthy and reduce the risk of stroke. Eating avocado can also regulate LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, as well as blood triglycerides. 4. Boosts fertility According to the book Healing Foods, avocados help in boosting fertility and better the chances at conceiving too. It is also linked to increasing the success of IVF Treatment. 5. Good for Eyes Including avocados in your diet may help improve eyesight. Avocados are loaded with betacarotene and antioxidants which are beneficial for eyes. They also contain lutein and zeaxanthin; both of these nutrients help maintain good eyesight, night vision and minimise damage from ultraviolet light. The high amount of vitamin A, also helps reduce the risk of macular degeneration that

develops with old age. The monounsaturated fatty acids in avocados, help in better absorption of beneficial fat-soluble antioxidants, such as betacarotene too. 6. Good source of folate Avocados are a good source of folate. Pregnant women must include avocados in their diet as folate helps healthy foetal development. Several studies have also claimed that folate decreases the risk of depression. Folate prevents the build-up of homocysteine. This substance tends to hamper circulation and the delivery path of nutrients to brain. 7. Improved digestion Having problems with digestion? Try creamy and fleshy avocados. Avocados are loaded with fibres that may help prevent constipation, boost digestion and colon health. Fibre adds bulk to the stool, which facilitates bowel regularity, thereby enhancing digestion. 8. Powerhouse of nutrients Avocado is a powerhouse of many essential nutrients and minerals. It is rich in vitamin K, B5, B6, B3, E and C. They are also dense in potassium, folate, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc and phosphorous. 9. Avocado benefits for weight loss The high-fibre content present in avocado could help make you shed a pound or two as well. 100 grams of avocado has 7 grams of fibre. Fibre takes the longest to digest. It induces the feeling of fullness, which prevents you from bingeing later. Avocados are very low on carbs too, which also promotes weight loss. 10: Helps absorb nutrients Avocados ensure better consumption of nutrients from plant source foods. There are several nutrients which are fat-soluble. This means that they need to combine with fats for them to be utilized by the body. Vitamin A, D, E and K are some plant nutrients

that are better absorbed with avocado. 11. Keep The Skin Healthy Avocados are rich in vitamin C (amounting to 17 percent recommended daily intake) and vitamin E (amounting to 17 percent recommended daily intake), both of which are essential in keeping the skin healthy and glowing.

is medicine and that vegan medicine tastes delicious? After surgery and chemo in Poland in 2009, David vowed he wanted to live, not die, he told the Grapevine. But for five years, chemo side effects caused liver problems, loss of memory and weakness. Thinking about the plight of animals as well his own disease, and after listening on You Tube to The Best Speech You Will Ever Hear by Gary Yourofsky, David immediately converted to a plant-based diet.

decade ago, London carpenter and furniture designer David Pankau lay in hospital stricken with terminal cancer at age 28: Hodgins Lymphoma Grade 4B. He had about 12 months to live. That was 2008.
Meson Mudejar became the area´s first all-plant based or vegan restaurant. Vegan means no meat, fish, animal or dairy products. Meson Mudejar offers a varied four-course menu from chickpea curry, vegan chicken piccata, a variety of starters and salads, and usually you will find a chocolate postre on offer. David and Kinga offer up to 20 percent group discounts on a limited menu. Meson Mudejar recently started its Curry Nights.
Fast forward to 15 June 2018 when David, age 38, and his partner Kinga, Polish and English fluent, parachuted into a world of risk taking and unknowns, renting and opening Meson Mudejar restaurant and B&B, five double en suite residences (3 with double What motivated David and Kinga and two with twin beds) in Archez. to promote their mantra that food
After a few weeks as a vegan, his liver problem vanished, his energy level returned and his memory sharpened. A recent PET Scan also showed his cancer is arrested. ¨Vegan¨ is not a naughty word. She used to work in various capacities in cafes, bars and restaurants. ¨We both had a passion to do something together, we like cooking, being creative.¨ David and Kinga also feature special theme nights along with cuisine, occasional live music at lower prices (15 Euros for a threecourse meal.).

ZUMBA Coming soon STRONG by ZUMBA
Z
umba describes itself as pretty much the most awesome workout ever where you dance to great music, with great people, and burn a ton of calories without even realising it. Nicola McEvoy, Competa’s very own Zumba instructor couldn’t describe it better and due to the amount of people in her classes they must think the same too! Nicola has been in Spain 12 years now and she started Zumba classes in April 2012. She was a child competitive dancer, dancing Latin, Ballroom and Disco. Zumba wasn’t in the Competa area 6 years ago and due to her love of dancing she wanted to try it. Her husband encouraged her to do an Instructor course herself, rather than find a class to join further afield. Once trained and loving it she looked at starting up classes in the inland villages and Competa, with it's incredible indoor sports hall, was the perfect place to launch the first set of classes.
66 The Grapevine
Over the years Nicola's classes became a fabulous success, so she expanded to other inland villages sometimes having up to 12 classes a week across 6 villages. Nicola took a break from teaching when she fell pregnant with Luca and since returning to work life isn’t quite so flexible with a little one. However, now he is at school and with the support of her husband and a pretty organised home life, she offers four Zumba classes a week. Mon & Wed 8pm and Tues & Fri 11am. Zumba is for all levels, ability, fitness, ages and nationalities which is proven by the broad spectrum of people that attend Nicola's classes in Competa. It's about having fun, moving to music and getting a bit sweaty!! It’s not serious and it’s up to you how much energy you can or are able to put into moving to the music. New people are always welcome to the classes. Nicola sees people walk past the sports hall, watch
the class for a bit and then turn up the following week to join in…. it really is infectious! Zumba have launched another type of work out so Nicola is training to instruct this too. STRONG by Zumba is a high intensity work out similar to HIIT Training but with syncronised music and using traditional fitness moves for a more athletic and conditioning style workout. Zumba advertises that by working out to perfectly synced music and moves, it will push you harder to burn more calories. This as well as the after burn, it is scientifically proven that you will see and feel incredible results. Nicola showed me the STRONG promotional video and I was inspired. The class focuses a bit more on athletic moves rather than dance which is exactly my type of exercise class. Classes will start in November and will be 4 euros each. I hope to see you there! I got into a fight with 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The odds were against me. Unfortunately, my obese parrot just died. It is, however, a huge weight off my shoulders.
I asked my son if he saw the newspaper... Instead he pulls out his tablet, opens the news app, and calls me old school, "tablets are the way to go nowadays' he says. The fly never stood a chance. My girlfriend isn’t talking to me. She said I ruined her birthday. I’m not sure how. I didn’t even know it was her birthday I used to be scared of pretty girls. So my Mum explained that was silly, because they're much more scared of me. I got a pet newt, and I named him Tiny. Because he's my newt.

A man in an interrogation room says “I’m not saying a word without my lawyer present.” Cop: You are the lawyer. Lawyer: Exactly, so where’s my present? Did you know that a piranha can devour a small child down to the bone in less than 30 seconds? Anyways, I lost my job at the aquarium today... Whoever invented the knock knock joke... Should get a Nobell prize. I have a bumper sticker that says, "honk if you think I'm sexy". I just sit at green lights until I feel good about myself.
Last night I had a dream that I weighed less than a thousandth of a gram. I was like, 0mg. I went for a job interview today and the manager said, “We’re looking for someone who is responsible.” “Well, I’m your man.” I replied, “In my last job, whenever anything went wrong, they said I was responsible.” What is the least spoken language in the world? Sign language. My dentist informed me today that I need a crown. Finally, someone who understands me.

ovember is a huge and exciting month in Mediterranean gardens; it's probably the best month for planting – especially this year as we've had some rain but temperatures, at writing, remain high. It's perfect for roots to snuggle in, warm and cosy. Don´t worry if new plantings don´t make top growth at this time of year, they're growing underground so that when springtime gives them that certain urge, they'll romp away! Planting now ensures that by the time the heat arrives next year, your plants will be far better equipped to cope. I know that many of you 'old-time gardeners' here know all this, but we have lots of new arrivals in and around Cómpeta who are not so sure of the gardening rules here, so forgive me for reiteration. Get the backbones in – tough trees, shrubs, perennials, climbers – things that may need

watering for a couple of years then will become largely selfsufficient. Then we're down to ground level and this is a class of plants that are vitally important here. Ground cover helps prevent erosion, traps and retains moisture, provides shade for roots of other plantings, controls weed growth and gives shelter to the tiny world of insects. A green carpet is so valuable and it's a range of plants that we are increasing at the garden centre so look out for these coming in. If you want large numbers, just let us know and we can order in for you. The basics are the glowing lampranthus family, creeping rosemary, carpobrotus with its edible lions claws and the muchloved belly button plant, aptenia. But there are a lot more droughtresistant possibilities ranging from tiny ground-huggers up to around 30cm high for some variation; here's some to kick start the brain cells:
Centranthus ruber, valerian is a fantastic spreader, self-seeding with great abandon – which can be useful when you have a new garden! Available in white or a lovely dusty pink. Cistus, or rock roses, are hugely useful. These are allelopathic plants, exuding chemicals which other plants – and weeds – do not like. In times of real drought, they may shed their leaves temporarily and the leaf litter protects their space from weed invasion. Great in poor, rocky ground and they hate summer watering! Many make large shrubs but there are some lower-growers too. C. x florentinus becomes smothered with white flowers in springtime and c. skanbergii, a little taller, has lovely pale pink flowers. Convolvulus cneorum, silverbush, forms low cushions of platinised foliage smothered in white flowers. For poor ground and low summer watering. Convolvulus sabatius, Moroccan

morning glory has green trailing stems studded with sky-blue flowers throughout the warmer months. Dichondra argentea Silver Falls, spreads by underground rhizomes and makes the most lovely silver carpet of shield-like leaves. Dorycnium hirsutum, canary clover, has lovely downy grey foliage with creamy and coral coloured flowers. It has nitrogenfixing nodules in its roots and is loved by our tiny winged creatures. Dymondia margaretae, silver carpet. A real ground hugger that can stand light foot traffic, it has narrow grey-green leaves edged with silver and tiny yellow flowers that are barely noticeable. Erigeron karvanskianus, Mexican fleabane. Pinkish-white daisy flowers, reminiscent of lawn daisies of our childhood, on a trailing, spreading plant. Euphorbia, or spurge, is another extremely useful family. Two of the lowest and best are euphorbia myrsinites whose thick blue-grey leaves form spreading ropes across the ground and euphorbia rigida, a little taller, starts flowering with acid yellow flowers (a real splash of colour on dismal January days) turning deep red as summer approaches. Frankenia laevis, sea heath, forms a lovely deep-green carpet, spreading by lateral stems, with pale pink flowers in late spring/early summer. Found growing in the wild amongst seaside rocks so good in saline situations. Globularia cordifolia, powder-puff plant. Hummocks of little green leaves and blue-lilac powder puff flowers make this one a little charmer! Hypericum balearicum, Majorca St. John's wort. A low sub-shrub with small leathery leaves with

SPANISH RED CROSS As part of its programme of social inclusion, the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja), is shortly to launch an interesting new initiative in the Axarquia region beginning in Torrox Pueblo in November. It will be for any English speaking foreign residents living in and around the area who would like to meet new people in a friendly environment once a fortnight to enjoy a variety of social activities. For more details see the poster which will be distributed via local social and print media Richard Weale, a British Volunteer with the Red Cross, said “This is a new opportunity for anyone aged over 50 to come along and take part in a range of activities, for example, informative talks, quizzes, cookery demos, films, learn simple Spanish words and phrases, training in the use of Smartphones and other technology, celebrating fiestas and special events and our team of volunteers will shape the activities to suit everyone's needs. Above all, it's an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends whilst having fun. We're calling the project “The Open Door” because that's exactly what it is, open to any nationality who are English speakers as all the activities will be in English.” To reserve a place or for more information please email Richard on 29094social@cruzroja.es
CORO DE COMPETA Some time ago there was a Competa based choir, run by the late Martin Stanley. This choir was named Axarquia Chorus which many people will remember and have enjoyed many of their concerts. As time went on the choir disbanded and a new choir, under the direction of Tom Robinson, was formed rejoicing in the name of “One Voice”.
This started as a volunteer group of singers who were invited to sing traditional carols to the school children at the Competa school. Tom then decided that it would be a good idea to hold a Christmas Carol Concert and raise funds for a local charity. So the choir grew in numbers, and a new confidence was born and many new songs were added to the choir's repertoire. This continued for a few happy years until, and with many concerts given, Tom, for personal reasons, decided to give up the position as Musical Director. The choir struggled to keep going with members taking it in turn to lead rehearsals. It soon became obvious that a new director was needed. It wasn't long before members started to dwindle and eventually things came to a halt. A few dormant years followed, and Competa found itself without a choir, but with new people coming into the community, and exmembers still interested in singing,
a new choir has emerged. More and more people have expressed a wish to sing and so “Coro de Competa” was born. With this new enthusiasm a large group of singers, all keen to get started, had no one to lead them. The group could not find anyone suitable to direct them. Empasse!! A die hard and dedicated musician, Tom could see a group of keen singers wanting to sing so, to our eternal gratitude, volunteered to act as Musical Director, albeit on a temporary basis until we could find some one to take over. Such a relief. Coro de Competa's first performance was an Open Rehearsal to which family and friends were invited. Bearing in mind that many of the members have never sung in a choir before, and many cannot read music, the mini concert was a resounding success. are very grateful to the Ayuntamiento de Competa for their support in allowing us to use the Salon de Actos for our rehearsals. We are currently practising songs for two events. In November we are singing at the Royal British Legion Memorial service in Nerja, at Hotel De Andalus and in December a Christmas Carol Concert in Competa. The venue for this concert is to be arranged, but look out for information. In the meantime, we look forward to your support in coming to our concerts and supporting a local charity. Greg Starr.
